- 0:12Hello friends, it is Sean. Here it is, Wednesday.
- 0:16It is the 9th of August. And I am so glad that you have
- 0:21joined me because today we continue reading through Isaiah,
- 0:25and today we hear Isaiah pronounce God's judgment on
- 0:29Egypt. And when we think of Egypt, we
- 0:32think of a country and the top part of Africa, you know, with
- 0:35the Suez Canal. And not a whole lot goes on
- 0:38there from our point of view. But at the time of writing,
- 0:42Egypt was this colossal empire that sat just to the South of
- 0:47where Israel was. And so they are always kind of
- 0:52waiting for the moment where Egypt decides we will move N to
- 0:56take on the great, you know, Babylonian and Syrian empires
- 1:00above and say they sit in this really precarious spot.
- 1:04And so Egypt was this great threat, this great power that
- 1:08they really wouldn't have been able to hold back except through
- 1:12God's defenses. So when we hear God pronounced
- 1:15judgment on Egypt, that is quite a mind blowing thing from the
- 1:19perspective of the Israelite people.
- 1:22And that is exactly what we're going to hear today.
- 1:26So friends, let us read together Isaiah, chapter 19.
- 1:41This message came to me concerning Egypt.
- 1:45Look, the Lord is advancing against Egypt.
- 1:48Riding on a swift cloud. The idols of Egypt tremble.
- 1:54The hearts of the Egyptians melt with fear.
- 1:57I will make Egyptian fight against Egyptian, brother
- 2:01against brother, neighbor against neighbor, city against
- 2:05city, province against province. The Egyptians will lose heart
- 2:10and will confuse their plans. They will plead with their idols
- 2:14for wisdom and call on spirits, mediums, and those who consult
- 2:19the spirits of the dead. I will hand Egypt over to a
- 2:24hard, cruel master. A fierce king will rule them,
- 2:28says the Lord, the Lord of Heaven's armies.
- 2:32The waters of the Nile will fail to rise and flood the fields.
- 2:37The riverbed will be parched and dry, the canals of the Nile will
- 2:42dry up, and the streams of Egypt will stink with rotting reeds
- 2:47and rushes. All the greenery along the
- 2:50riverbank and all the crops along the river will dry up and
- 2:54blow away. The fishermen will lament for
- 2:58lack of work. Those who cast hooks into the
- 3:01Nile will groan, and those who use Nets will lose heart.
- 3:07There will be no flax for the harvesters, no thread for the
- 3:10weavers. They will be in despair, and all
- 3:14the workers will be sick at heart.
- 3:17What fools are the officials of Zion?
- 3:20Their best counsel to the king of Egypt is stupid and wrong.
- 3:25Will they still boast to Pharaoh of their wisdom?
- 3:28Will they dare brag about all their wise ancestors?
- 3:33Where are your wise counsellors, Pharaoh?
- 3:36Let them tell you what God plans, what the Lord of Heaven's
- 3:40armies is going to do to Egypt. The officials of Zoan are fools
- 3:45and the officials of Memphis are deluded.
- 3:48The leaders of the people have led Egypt astray.
- 3:51The Lord has sent a spirit of foolishness on them.
- 3:54So all their suggestions are wrong.
- 3:57They cause Egypt to stagger like a drunken is vomit.
- 4:02There is nothing Egypt can do. All are helpless, the head and
- 4:06the tail, the noble palm branch and the lowly Reed.
- 4:12In that day the Egyptians will be as weak as women.
- 4:15They will cower in fear beneath the upraised fist of the Lord of
- 4:19heaven's armies. Just to speak the name of Israel
- 4:23will terrorize them, For the Lord of heaven's armies has laid
- 4:27out his plans against them. In that day, five of Egypt's
- 4:32cities will follow the Lord of Heaven's armies.
- 4:35They will even begin to speak Hebrew, the language of Canaan.
- 4:39One of these cities will be Heliopolis, the city of the Sun.
- 4:45In that day there will be an altar to the Lord in the heart
- 4:48of Egypt, and there will be a monument to the Lord at its
- 4:51border. It will be a sign and a witness
- 4:54that the Lord of Heaven's armies is worshipped in the land of
- 4:58Egypt. When the people cry to the Lord
- 5:01for help against those who oppress them, he will send them
- 5:04a savior who will rescue them. The Lord will make himself known
- 5:09to the Egyptians. Yes, they will know the Lord and
- 5:14will give their sacrifices and offerings to him.
- 5:17They will make a vow to the Lord and will keep it.
- 5:20The Lord will strike Egypt, and then he will bring healing, For
- 5:25the Egyptians will turn to the Lord and he will listen to their
- 5:28pleas and heal them. In that day, Egypt and Assyria
- 5:33will be connected by a highway. The Egyptians and Assyrians will
- 5:37move freely between their lands, and they will both worship God.
- 5:42In that day. Israel will be the third, along
- 5:45with Egypt and Assyria, a blessing in the midst of the
- 5:48earth. For the Lord of Heaven's armies
- 5:51will say, Blessed be Egypt my people, Blessed be Assyria, the
- 5:58land I have made, Blessed be Israel, my special possession.
- 6:15Lord, thank you for this reading, that as we read of
- 6:19judgment over all these nations, it can be easy for us to think
- 6:22that these are not your people, and that you have this amnity
- 6:27toward them, but all are yours. The whole world is your special
- 6:34creation, and you love every last inhabitant of this globe.
- 6:41Thank you that you are not a God who plays favorites and rejects,
- 6:48that you are a God who loves with abandon, and you draw
- 6:55everyone closer to you. And your desire is that everyone
- 6:59would fall under the wings of your love.
- 7:05So that is where we place ourselves, right in the way of
- 7:09your avalanche of love. And we thank you for all that
- 7:13you have done for us and all that we know of who you are in
- 7:17Jesus. So we just praise you and adore
- 7:22you and thank you for your love for us.
- 7:27In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
