- Lucas: Luna, welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo. Episode 116 — I'm glad you're here. Luna: Thanks Lucas. I've been practicing my market phrases from previous episodes. I feel ready for something new today. Lucas: Perfect. We've covered vegetables, chicken, fish, tofu, cucumber, jackfruit... but there's one famous fruit we haven't touched yet. Luna: Oh, are we talking about durian? The king of fruits? Lucas: Exactly. Today we're learning how to buy durian at the market. Let's start simple. To say 'I want durian', you say: Saya mahu durian. Luna: Saya mahu durian. Saya mahu durian. Lucas: Good. 'Saya mahu' means 'I want'. 'Durian' is durian. Now, when you see a stall with durians, you'll ask the price per fruit. 'How much for one?' is: Berapa harga sebiji? Luna: Berapa harga sebiji? Berapa harga sebiji? Lucas: Yes. 'Berapa' means 'how much', 'harga' is 'price', 'sebiji' means 'one piece'. So, 'Berapa harga sebiji?' is natural. Luna: That makes sense. And if I want to ask if the durian is tasty? Lucas: Great question. You can ask: Durian ini sedap? 'Ini' is 'this', 'sedap' means 'delicious'. So 'Durian ini sedap?' — 'Is this durian tasty?' Luna: Durian ini sedap? Durian ini sedap? Lucas: Exactly. Now, once you decide to buy one durian, say: Saya mahu sebiji. That's 'I want one piece'. Luna: Saya mahu sebiji. So 'sebiji' here means one fruit. Lucas: Yes. Now, many sellers can open the durian for you. To ask 'Can you open it?' say: Boleh buka? Luna: Boleh buka? Boleh buka? Lucas: Right. And finally, if you want it wrapped to take away, you say: Bungkus sikit. 'Bungkus' means 'wrap', 'sikit' means 'a little' or casually 'please'. So 'Bungkus sikit' — 'Wrap it up please.' Luna: Bungkus sikit. Bungkus sikit. Lucas: Let's do a quick practice. Imagine we're at a market stall with durians. You want one, you ask the price, and you want it opened and wrapped. Luna: OK. Saya mahu durian. Berapa harga sebiji? Lucas: The seller says 'Fifteen ringgit.' You ask 'Durian ini sedap?' Seller says 'Very sweet.' Then you say: Luna: Saya mahu sebiji. Boleh buka? Lucas: And to wrap? Luna: Bungkus sikit. Lucas: Perfect! You just bought durian in Malay. Let's hear the phrases one more time. First: Saya mahu durian. Luna: Saya mahu durian. Lucas: Berapa harga sebiji? Luna: Berapa harga sebiji? Lucas: Durian ini sedap? Luna: Durian ini sedap? Lucas: Saya mahu sebiji. Luna: Saya mahu sebiji. Lucas: Boleh buka? Luna: Boleh buka? Lucas: Bungkus sikit. Luna: Bungkus sikit.
