- 0:00All right, we are live. What's up, everybody?
- 0:02Charlie Marlow here talking college football.
- 0:06We're going to start talking all about coaches because all kinds
- 0:10of coaching news things going on the last week or so.
- 0:16We're going to start with what's happened most recently.
- 0:19Mike Gundy. I'm a man, I'm 40.
- 0:23Remember that? One of the great quotes of all
- 0:27time. And I'm guessing when that
- 0:29happened, he was exactly 40. I should know that, but I just
- 0:32looked at his Wikipedia page and he's 58 years old.
- 0:36You probably heard the news. Mike Gundy let go from Oklahoma
- 0:41State University with the mullet.
- 0:45I was looking up his record and all that and look, it was just
- 0:492023. Okie State, 10 and four finished
- 0:55the year ranked 16th in the country 20/21/12 and two
- 1:01finished 7th in the country. Now if you go way far back,
- 1:062011, he had a year 12 and one finished third in the nation.
- 1:13Would that have been the Michael Crabtree?
- 1:15No, Michael Crabtree was Texas Tech Scratch that, we're live.
- 1:19I can't edit that out. I don't remember who was on that
- 1:22team back then. For Oklahoma State, 2011, but
- 1:25third in the country and 12:00 and 1:00 and 1:00 the Big 12.
- 1:31So they won the Big 12 just the one year.
- 1:34That was 2011 under Mike Gundy, a career record. 170 and Ninety
- 1:41170 and 90 and 102 and 72 in the Big 12.
- 1:48This year let go with a one and two record.
- 1:52He went 3:00 and 9:00 last year and if you remember there was
- 1:55talk there were O and nine, O and nine in conference last
- 1:58year. There was talk of Mike Gundy
- 2:00that he was going to lose his job over the winter and they had
- 2:03to work out the contract and the money and all that and NIL.
- 2:06So there you go, Mike Gundy, one of the great personalities with
- 2:12again, I'm a man, I'm 40 and the mullet and a guy who spoke his
- 2:17mind, 58 years old. We'll see if he still coaches
- 2:21somewhere. Oklahoma State was his alma
- 2:23mater. It's the only place he knew.
- 2:26We'll see what happens. And I I read AI guess it was a
- 2:29tweet that basically he could have he could have stayed for
- 2:33the rest of the year and he kind of just said, hey, I'll take my
- 2:36money and I'll bounce. So a lot of coaching talk on
- 2:40this show today, starting with Gundy, then we're going to move
- 2:44on here to Dabo Sweeney, OK? And these things all kind of mix
- 2:49in together because Dabo Sweeney's had a couple of press
- 2:54conferences the last last couple of couple of weeks where he kind
- 2:59of said, look, if if Clemson doesn't like what we're doing
- 3:02here and they want to move on for me, hey, I'll go somewhere
- 3:06else. I'll coach somewhere else.
- 3:08He ain't he ain't done right. And I'm pulling up Dabo Sweeney
- 3:13right now. He is a 55 years old, 55 years
- 3:17old, two national championships. I have to say for a while there,
- 3:23Dabo Sweeney, I don't know if he still is, but he was kind of the
- 3:27number one Public Enemy for me as an Ohio State fan because he
- 3:32had Ohio State's number for a nice chunky years there.
- 3:37You can go back, gosh, I remember they beat they beat
- 3:41Ohio State in a bowl game. I think, I think it was the
- 3:44Cotton Bowl. Don't quote me on that.
- 3:47I can look that up right here. This was years ago, years ago
- 3:52before they won their national championships.
- 3:55Dabo and Clemson wins their national championships in 2016
- 4:00and 2018. Remember they had Deshaun Watson
- 4:03and then they had Trevor Lawrence as the quarterback in
- 4:092018 when he wins the national championship.
- 4:12Shawn Watson in 2016. OK, I can't remember which bowl
- 4:17game they beat Ohio State in before that, but that's neither
- 4:21here nor there. You don't really care.
- 4:23Maybe it was the Orange Bowl, I don't remember.
- 4:26I don't have the greatest memory.
- 4:28I remember seeing Ohio State though, play Clemson with
- 4:32Deshaun Watson. This was the College Football
- 4:35Playoff semi final. So what year was this anyway?
- 4:41Ohio State got beat 31 zip by Clemson 31 zip in that game.
- 4:47College Football Playoff semi final and then spin it ahead and
- 4:55Clemson beats Ohio State in the College Football Playoff again.
- 5:00That was with Trevor Lawrence. If you remember that game, there
- 5:03was all kinds of kind of craziness.
- 5:06There was like a targeting call that was very controversial
- 5:10where Ohio State, one of their best defensive players was was
- 5:14called for targeting. There was that fumble, If you
- 5:17remember that, it looked like a fumble.
- 5:20They said it wasn't a completed catch.
- 5:22Anyway, I'm just kind of in my brain thinking of this game and
- 5:25I'm kind of getting off topic. That's what I do.
- 5:29Let's see. Oh, hey, Derek Docket, D Bear.
- 5:33D Bear's weighing in and he says let's see better coach
- 5:38microphone moment. Gundy's I'm a man, I'm 40 or Jim
- 5:42Morris playoffs or Dennis Green. The Bears are who he thought
- 5:46they were. D Bear, appreciate you watching.
- 5:50That's a great question. I mean, they're all they're all
- 5:53right up there. They're all top tier for this
- 5:56conversation. I'm going Gundy just because we
- 5:58started with Gundy. Dennis Green also, didn't he?
- 6:03Didn't he pound the podium? I believe playoffs, it's hard to
- 6:07beat playoffs. But D Baer, appreciate you
- 6:09watching, buddy. So anyway, and by the way, get
- 6:13your get your comments in as well, anybody.
- 6:16But I'm just trying to say Dabo Sweeney was Ohio State's nemesis
- 6:20for for a good number of years there.
- 6:23And I do respect, I really respect what he built as a
- 6:26program. Now, Clemson did win a national
- 6:28championship. I believe it was 1981, but it
- 6:31had been a long time since Clemson was knocking on the door
- 6:36each and every year to play for and win national championships.
- 6:40So that's where, look, I know Clemson fans probably got used
- 6:45to being in the Final Four, winning a national championship
- 6:49every couple years, but what was Clemson before Davos Sweeney?
- 6:53That's my point. It's not like Ohio State where,
- 6:57and I know I keep making the Ohio State comparisons, but you
- 7:00can go back really 35 years, 40 years, whatever it is with the
- 7:06Buckeyes. And I don't want to say it
- 7:08didn't matter who was the head coach.
- 7:09I mean, John Cooper had a great win loss record, but he could
- 7:12never beat Michigan, but he handed the baton to Jim Tressel.
- 7:17Jim Tressel essentially did what John Cooper did, but he beat
- 7:22Michigan each and every year. Basically every year anyone a
- 7:26national championship, Jim Tressel hands the ball off to
- 7:31Urban Meyer. There was the weird Luke Fickle
- 7:33year with the tattoos, but we'll skip that.
- 7:36But I'm saying Urban Meyer takes it even to another level.
- 7:41He never loses to Michigan. 7 and O wins the national
- 7:44championship, gets the team essentially the College Football
- 7:47Playoff. Most years.
- 7:50We know what happens with Urban. Urban hands it off to Ryan Day.
- 7:53Things are looking good early. Then Ryan Day can't win a big
- 7:56game. He can't beat Michigan.
- 7:58Then all of a sudden the last, what, 55 big games?
- 8:02Now he can't lose. What I'm saying is Ohio State
- 8:05has a program, so that's going back.
- 8:09That's going back 30, really 30 years, whatever it is.
- 8:13Consistently winning 1011, sometimes 12 games every single
- 8:18year. They've won national
- 8:20championships now. Three different coaches, kind of
- 8:23three different eras, right? In the early aughts, in the
- 8:28teens, we're going to call it, it was 2014, But now then in
- 8:312024, so about every 10 years or so, Ohio State's winning a
- 8:35national championship. My point is, and I always go
- 8:38longer than I want to, but Ohio State is more of a program where
- 8:42Dabo, I get it. Like if you're not loving Dabo
- 8:46the last couple years, I understand.
- 8:48But where were you before Dabo? And where will you be after Dabo
- 8:53if he leaves, right? Are you going to get a better
- 8:56coach than Dabo? By the way, for a while, I
- 8:59thought that Dabo would replace Nick Saban.
- 9:04And right now, Dabo's kind of on a little bit of a of a downturn.
- 9:09And who knows what's going to happen in Alabama.
- 9:11He wouldn't be their first choice now.
- 9:13And now again, I'm kind of all over the place, but I'm Alabama.
- 9:17If if you're not liking what's going on with Caitlin de Boer
- 9:21and that monstrous buyout, I'm not saying it's going to happen
- 9:24this year, but down the road, I mean, isn't Lane Kiffin, isn't
- 9:27Lane Kiffin the the first call you have to make?
- 9:30Maybe Lane like staying there at Ole Miss.
- 9:33I don't know. Could have had the Auburn job.
- 9:35But Auburn and Alabama, Alabama are not the same.
- 9:39So who knows. My point being, Clemson fans, I
- 9:44understand if you're not super happy, but look, even even in
- 9:49Dabo's down years, I know they're one and three.
- 9:53This year they're owned 2. So really rough start.
- 9:56But they made the College Football Playoff last year,
- 9:58expanded playoff. We know that.
- 10:00I mean, they won 10 games last year.
- 10:03Up until this year, they've been ranked.
- 10:05They've been, they've been ranked every season
- 10:0712345678910111214 straight years ranked in the top 25.
- 10:15And you had a stretch there from 2015 to 2020 where they're
- 10:19ranked in the top five every year.
- 10:23Look at that. Finished second, won the natty,
- 10:26finished fourth, won the natty, finished second, finished third.
- 10:30That's 2015 until 2020 and the COVID year there and the COVID
- 10:38year, that's where they actually lost to Ohio State in the bowl
- 10:41game. That was Justin Fields that Ohio
- 10:45State goes on to get smoked by Alabama during that COVID year.
- 10:49OK, so we're just talking coaches.
- 10:52And again, all I'm saying is Mike Gundy, he gone.
- 10:55We'll see if he coaches somewhere else.
- 10:58Still pretty young, 58. He's got the beautiful flowing
- 11:01mullet. Dabo's only 55.
- 11:04Clemson fans, be worried. Be be concerned about what you
- 11:10wish for, right? You don't like Dabo and he's
- 11:14basically, even in his down years, top 20, top 15 or
- 11:18whatever it is. It could be worse.
- 11:20I know he's not. Look, it's hard to replicate
- 11:23that street guy just said 2015 to 2026 years in a row, the dude
- 11:28finishes in the frickin top four in the top four of college
- 11:33football. It's hard to sustain that.
- 11:35Not many programs can sustain that lately.
- 11:38I'm in Ohio State's probably one of the only programs that could
- 11:41say something like that, finishing around the top five
- 11:45every single year for for a long period of time.
- 11:47We've even seen, you know, Alabama took a bit of a dip last
- 11:51year in Caitlin de Boer's first year.
- 11:55So because we're talking about coaching here locally, if you
- 11:59don't know, I'm here in Saint Louis.
- 12:02And it got me thinking about Eli Drink wits, right?
- 12:05Mike Gundy gets fired, but he was there for fricking how many
- 12:09years? I mean, how long was Mike Gundy
- 12:12at Oklahoma State? From 2005 to 2025?
- 12:18So what is that 21 years? Whatever it is?
- 12:20Dabo Sweeney, he's been the head coach at Clemson since 2008.
- 12:25So we're talking about 18 years. It just got me thinking.
- 12:30The grass is not always greener. Eli Drinkwitz is doing some
- 12:33really nice things at Mizzou. He makes $9 million per year,
- 12:37according to Wikipedia. He's 42 years old.
- 12:40That's it. He's young.
- 12:41He's younger than me. I'm a man I'm 43.
- 12:44He's a man. He's 42.
- 12:48And then I say this with love. So Mizzou, 42 and 2423 and 20 in
- 12:55the SEC, the toughest conference in college football.
- 12:58He went 12 and one his one season at Appalachian State.
- 13:02He finishes 22nd in the country or 20th in the country last
- 13:06year, 8th in the country the year before.
- 13:08They beat Ohio State in that bowl game.
- 13:11I've talked about that ad nauseam.
- 13:13He has Mizzou 4 and O this year, 1 and O in conference, they're
- 13:16ranked in the top 25. It just got me thinking because
- 13:21with what Eli Drinkwitz is doing and his last, let's just go last
- 13:26three seasons. 25 and 5 didn't start out great.
- 13:32No, five and five. I think that was a surprise in
- 13:34the COVID year, kind of a little better than everybody expected.
- 13:362020. Then he goes six and seven, six
- 13:38and seven. He really had to prove himself
- 13:40in 2023, but he did. And now he can probably be there
- 13:44as long as he wants. And that's why if I'm Eli
- 13:46Drinkwitz, when you start to have bigger schools come
- 13:50calling, which is probably already happening or it will
- 13:52happen, whether it's Florida, whoever, I'm not saying he's
- 13:56going to be a candidate for Alabama.
- 13:57But my point is, look, I'm here in Saint Louis.
- 14:00I have tons of friends, family that are Mizzou fans.
- 14:02Mizzou is a really good program. It's a really solid program.
- 14:06He has the Tigers rolling. But Mizzou is also not a blue
- 14:09blood you. You just wonder when the big
- 14:13schools really start calling for Eli Drinkwitz, will he leave?
- 14:17Will he stay? My advice would be to stay,
- 14:20honestly. Look, even if you're not winning
- 14:2310 games, if you win 8 or 9:00-ish games, if, if you have
- 14:29a Gary Pinkel like career, you can go down as the best coach in
- 14:33the history of Mizzou. If if Eli Drinkowitz keeps this
- 14:36up, you don't have the same pressure as a blue blood.
- 14:40Maybe you want that pressure. Pressure makes diamonds.
- 14:42I get that. But I'm just, I'm just saying,
- 14:45we know there's so many examples of coaches leaving a spot where
- 14:49they're really good. I think back to Rich Rodriguez.
- 14:52Rich Rodriguez, his first time when he was at West Virginia and
- 14:56it just everything clicked there and then he goes to Michigan and
- 14:59it didn't work out and his career really not the same
- 15:03since. And all I'm saying is sometimes
- 15:06even if you're not out of blue blood, if you can make
- 15:08$910,000,000 a year, if you can in your bad seasons, win 7 or 8.
- 15:15I know his bad seasons early were six wins, but hopefully Eli
- 15:19Drinkwitz is bad seasons moving forward.
- 15:22More like 7 wins. If you can win 891011 games, if
- 15:27you can win double digit games every five years or so, whatever
- 15:31it is. And he's already better than
- 15:32that by the way. But if you can do that every
- 15:35five years or so at Mizzou, you can coach for as long as you
- 15:38want. I mean, he could, he could, he
- 15:40could literally coach there for 25 years.
- 15:42I'm, I'm not going to predict the future, but the dude's 42
- 15:44years old and if he keeps this up, he could go down as the best
- 15:48Mizzou football coach in history.
- 15:50He could coach there as long as he wants to.
- 15:52Whereas, OK, let's say you take the Florida job whenever it is
- 15:56couple years from now, you have a nice season, all of a sudden
- 16:00you have a couple of bad seasons.
- 16:02They want you fired immediately. Then where do you go from there?
- 16:05Could you build back somewhere else?
- 16:07Sure. My point is sometimes it's nice
- 16:10to be in a good spot where everything's working out.
- 16:14And by the way, you know, if, if I'm thinking about Eli
- 16:18Drinkowitz potentially leaving Mizzou, and it's not like he's
- 16:20going to, but I would think you could make the argument a couple
- 16:24years ago. If Eli Drinkowitz is saying, you
- 16:26know what in the SEC, how hard will it be to win, to actually
- 16:31win the SEC from Mizzou? Very difficult.
- 16:35How difficult would it be for Mizzou to make it to a four team
- 16:38College Football Playoff? Very, very difficult.
- 16:41And we know going back that that Mizzou made it to the SEC
- 16:44Championship game 2013, 2014. I get that.
- 16:47I covered those teams. I was at the first, I was at the
- 16:50first SEC Championship game, 2013, close game around
- 16:53halftime, whatever it was, Auburn steamrolled them.
- 16:57They just run, ran the ball down their throat.
- 17:00Trey Mason, Mizzou just couldn't stop the same play for the whole
- 17:03game. But my point is more so it would
- 17:06be really hard for Mizzou. Everything would have to be
- 17:09perfect. And then this is this is by the
- 17:12way, this was during the SEC East, SEC West when the East was
- 17:16down for a while there, Georgia was not what it is now.
- 17:19Tennessee was a little bit down. I know it's not the same
- 17:22scenario now, but again, I'm I'm long winded in saying couple
- 17:27years ago, you go, man, if I'm at Mizzou, can I really win a
- 17:29national title? Can I really make it to the
- 17:32College Football Playoff? Can I really win the SEC now?
- 17:35I still think some of those questions are fair.
- 17:37Now, will Mizzou ever win the SECII?
- 17:40Don't know. It's probably not likely.
- 17:43You never know. But could Mizzou be the second,
- 17:46third, fourth best team in the SEC?
- 17:49Absolutely. In the past, that doesn't get
- 17:52you to the College Football Playoff with four teams.
- 17:54Or if you go before that BCS era, whatever it is.
- 17:57Well, now, I mean, look, go back two years.
- 18:01It was just timing. Mizzou would be in the 12 team
- 18:04College Football Playoff if it started a year earlier in 2023.
- 18:08Last year, Mizzou had a very good chance to make the College
- 18:11Football Playoff and they got blown out by Texas A&M.
- 18:14It just didn't work out. But if you can go 10 and two, if
- 18:17Mizzou can do that this year, there's a very good chance they
- 18:20can make the College Football Playoffs.
- 18:22So I think that's also changed the conversation for coaches.
- 18:27If you said, man, I have to be at a blue blood to get to that
- 18:30final four, you know, it's not going to happen.
- 18:33You know, every once in a while I'm and I'm thinking about the
- 18:35Big 10. You know, Michigan State got to
- 18:38the College Football Playoff that one year.
- 18:40Think about the Big 12. There's been years TCU, did
- 18:45Baylor, did Baylor ever get to the College Football Playoff?
- 18:48I I think they did. I'll have to check that.
- 18:50But my point is non blue blood teams every once in a while
- 18:55would find their way into the College Football Playoff Final
- 18:59Four. But it was usually Alabama, Ohio
- 19:01State, Clemson for those years, Oklahoma.
- 19:05I mean, you had Georgia at the end there.
- 19:08Georgia makes its run. But now with 12 teams, if
- 19:12Mizzou, Mizzou could finish third or fourth, they could be a
- 19:1610 and two SEC team. And as long as they don't get
- 19:20blown out like last year at Texas A&M and you have a couple
- 19:23good wins, Mizzou could absolutely make the College
- 19:26Football Playoff. And this also I was I was
- 19:29following somebody on Twitter that made this argument that
- 19:33Mizzou shouldn't be in the SEC. And again, like I think that's a
- 19:37fair debate to have. And it was it was more of a
- 19:40debate years ago for all the reasons I mentioned, which is
- 19:45out of the SEC, are you ever going to win the conference?
- 19:49Are you ever going to make the four team College Football
- 19:51Playoff? I think it's fair to say
- 19:53Mizzou's chances of squeaking into a College Football Playoff
- 19:56or winning their conference, Some of those, some of those Big
- 20:0010 years, certainly some of those Big 12 years at the end,
- 20:04right? Could Mizzou the last couple
- 20:06years made it to a a a final four out of the Big 12?
- 20:11Could they have won the Big 12? Yeah, I think it's fair to say
- 20:14some of those years they had a good chance or could have
- 20:16actually won that conference. But now again, the 12 team
- 20:19playoff changes everything. It gives everybody so many more
- 20:23opportunities. You can lose a game.
- 20:25Hell, there's going to be 9 and three teams that eventually make
- 20:27the College Football Playoff. So Eli Drinkwitz is doing a hell
- 20:31of a job at Mizzou and I think he should stay.
- 20:36I think he's good for business. Just stay there.
- 20:38Make your 9 million. They'll keep giving you raises,
- 20:40Eventually be making whatever 1213 million.
- 20:43They're happy with ten wins, you know, get to a College Football
- 20:46Playoff. What's fair?
- 20:48What do you think is fair guys, for Mizzou?
- 20:52I mean, is, is the college football 12 team playoff fair
- 20:55every 10 years for Mizzou? Should it be every eight?
- 21:00Should it be every seven? Should we say no?
- 21:03I mean, if they get in, they get in.
- 21:05But I think 12 teams opens up a whole new can of worms if you
- 21:11just go back. Let's just do it real quick
- 21:14because hey, I'm here. Let's check out Missouri
- 21:18football, OK, year by year and see how many, how many years
- 21:24they would have made the College Football Playoff with a 12 team,
- 21:30with a 12 team format. OK, I'm trying to find year by
- 21:33year. I'm on Wikipedia.
- 21:36All right, let's just let's just do this.
- 21:39We'll go. We'll go backwards with coaches.
- 21:42OK. Eli Drinkwitz.
- 21:44Boom. Eli Drinkwitz would have made
- 21:48the College Football Playoff in a 12 team format in 2023.
- 21:53OK, he would have made it for sure.
- 21:55Who knows? Maybe he makes it.
- 21:57Maybe he makes it this year. But 2023 Mizzou would have made
- 22:01a 12 team College Football Playoff.
- 22:03Let's go to Barry Odom. I don't think they ever would
- 22:05have made the 12 team playoff. Barry Odom mostly what?
- 22:09Eight wins? Yeah, Barry Odom's best season
- 22:13was 8 and 5/20/18 never finished ranked.
- 22:19So let's go back to Pinky Gary Pinkel.
- 22:23So with what I'm talking about, Mizzou would have made the
- 22:27College Football Playoff 12 team in 2023.
- 22:30OK, 2014 Mizzou would have made it right. 11 and 3 was their
- 22:36final record. They finished 11th and 14th in
- 22:40the standings in the polls 2013 of course, Mizzou finished fifth
- 22:47in the country. They'd have made the 12 team
- 22:50College Football Playoff if there was one.
- 22:52I'm saying. And then go back to 2000 and
- 22:55seven. 2007 Mizzou 12 and 2. They finished in the polls 5th
- 23:01and 4th. So for sure, Mizzou would have
- 23:05made a 12 team College Football Playoff 1234 times in the last
- 23:121819 seasons and even 2008 and 2010 under Gary Pinkel.
- 23:19They're 10:00 and 4:00 and 10:00 and 3:00.
- 23:21They're knocking on the door. You know, they finished 18th in
- 23:24the country, 19th in country, whatever it is, they're knocking
- 23:27on the door to make a 12 team College Football Playoff.
- 23:29So with that math, if Eli Drinkwitz wants to be as good as
- 23:33Gary Pinkel, which I think he can be, so Gary Pinkel would
- 23:36have made A12 team College Football Playoff three times and
- 23:41Eli would have made it once. So I think Eli's got to do it a
- 23:45couple more Times Now, now that we actually have a playoff.
- 23:48Remember, I'm talking hypothetically here.
- 23:51So there you go. You know what?
- 23:53I was going to talk about a bunch of other stuff.
- 23:55I watched that Charlie Sheen documentary I recommend.
- 23:58It's crazy. It's like 3 hours, 2 episodes,
- 24:01hour and a half. We don't need to get into that
- 24:04though, because you know what? I've already gone 24 minutes.
- 24:06It's all good, and we're trying to talk college football, so
- 24:10we'll just kind of end with college football.
- 24:12And you got to say, though, I got my Guardian shirt on #guards
- 24:16ball, believe land. How about the Cleveland
- 24:19Guardians making up like 15 1/2 games in a matter of a couple
- 24:24months? My good buddy Dan Puente, the
- 24:27assistant hitting coach. So I'm rooting for the Guardians
- 24:30even though they're playing the Detroit Tigers, the team that
- 24:32all my family grew up rooting for.
- 24:36So there you go. All right, thanks for watching
- 24:37live D Bear. Appreciate the comment.
- 24:40Thanks for watching on Charlie Marlow YouTube.
- 24:42We will put this on podcast, Kenny Wallace media, lots of
- 24:45college football talking coaches and here's why I didn't actually
- 24:49watch any college football this past week.
- 24:51Not going to lie. I was at freaking Monster Jam
- 24:54with my kid on Saturday. I was at the lake.
- 24:57I was watching the NASCAR race on Sunday.
- 25:00I'm honest with you guys, but I'll be watching this week.
- 25:03It's one of the greatest slates of college football we've seen.
- 25:06Ohio State and Washington, but what Oregon?
- 25:09Penn State? Before I leave you, let me find
- 25:12it because the games are just crazy.
- 25:14The games are insane this week. Let me read the schedule for you
- 25:17in case you forgot because I forget all the time.
- 25:23Here we go. Let's just talk ranked week 5.
- 25:26Coming up, we got USC and Illinois.
- 25:30That's ranked 21, ranked USC, 23rd ranked Illinois.
- 25:34We got Ohio State at Washington, both undefeated, Washington
- 25:38unranked, Ohio State number one in the country.
- 25:42That spread is only 8 1/2 for the Buckeyes.
- 25:45How about #4 LSU at #13 Ole Miss talking about Lane Kiffin again?
- 25:53And then what am I missing? Already mentioned Oregon at Penn
- 25:57State, Penn State, 3 1/2 point favorite.
- 26:00I'll tell you too that Ole Miss is a 1 1/2 point favorite at
- 26:04home versus LSU, Alabama, Georgia, Alabama at Georgia, the
- 26:10Dogs a 3 1/2 point favorite. So man, you talk about marquee
- 26:14matchups, Alabama, Georgia, Oregon, Penn State and LSU.
- 26:20Ole Miss 3 monster games. We'll even throw USC and
- 26:24Illinois top 25 match up. But three monster match ups this
- 26:28week for a week 5 of college football.
- 26:32Let's see, we got Rob 077 commenting so I can't leave you
- 26:37yet. Rob 077.
- 26:40A lot of SEC fans were not happy that Mizzou came in there two of
- 26:44the first three seasons and made it to Atlanta.
- 26:47And some have never been forever.
- 26:50Yeah, that's true. Remember also, wasn't it that
- 26:54first year they wouldn't have made it obviously to the
- 26:58championship game, Correct me if I'm wrong.
- 27:00I believe the first year Sheldon Richardson, who was a beast,
- 27:04didn't get to play the final game.
- 27:06There was an issue. I can't remember what it was.
- 27:08I was at this game. I think they lost to Syracuse.
- 27:12I think they lost to Syracuse and they would have been both
- 27:14eligible. Tell you what, because I have
- 27:16Gary Pinkel's numbers up, I'll look that up because I don't
- 27:20have the greatest memory. So this would have been, yeah,
- 27:25OK, This would have been 2012. So Mizzou finished five and
- 27:29seven. Let me see if my memory is
- 27:31correct. Let's go through their schedule.
- 27:35OK. I guess I was kind of wrong.
- 27:38I think I was. I think I was right.
- 27:41They got smoked by Texas A&M final game of the season by 30,
- 27:47but they lost a four point game at home to Syracuse 3127.
- 27:54If they win that game, they would have been six and six and
- 27:57bowl eligible. Correct me if I'm wrong.
- 27:59I believe there was an issue. Sheldon Midderson didn't play
- 28:02that game. And I think you can make the
- 28:04argument if he plays, they probably win whatever it is.
- 28:06I can't remember, but I think that's what happened.
- 28:09That was 2012. But yeah, 2013, 2014 got to
- 28:12cover those teams with Gary Pinkel and they were, they were
- 28:16bad ass teams. Dude, those teams on the lines
- 28:20were freaking monsters. Those were SEC teams at the line
- 28:24of scrimmage, that offensive line.
- 28:27I mean, almost all those dudes played in the NFL at some point.
- 28:32So many of those defensive lineman draft picks.
- 28:36I mean, we're talking about Shane Ray, Marcus Golden,
- 28:40Michael Sam, Coney, Ely, just I mean, pass rushers getting after
- 28:47the quarterback dominant offensive lines.
- 28:49Those Mizzou teams were really, really good.
- 28:52Also in the era where the SEC was by far the best conference,
- 28:56they were winning the national championship every year.
- 28:58And you run into an Auburn team, you run into what, an Alabama
- 29:02team the next year where those, those teams were almost
- 29:04impossible to beat, especially Nick Saban in Alabama when he
- 29:09was really going. Let me double check that on on
- 29:13the following year because I was at the game when they lost to
- 29:16Auburn. So let's see 2014, 2014, yeah #1
- 29:24Alabama, it was a boat race. They lost 4213 in the SEC
- 29:29championship game, but they came back to win their bowl game
- 29:32versus Minnesota, 3317. So there you have it.
- 29:38All right, thank you, D Bear. Thank you, Rob for commenting
- 29:42and I'm going to shut her down. And again, thank you for
- 29:45listening. Also on Kenny Wallace Media for
- 29:47the podcast version. All right, we're going to do one
- 29:49of these each and every week, usually talking college
- 29:51football. We'll bounce around with some
- 29:53other sports stuff moving forward.
- 29:56All right, thanks for watching end stream, end stream.
