Latest / The Stoic Handbook with Jon Brooks / A Stoic Morning to See Things Clearly
Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: This meditation will help you strip away emotional exaggeration and see reality clearly.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: By practicing the stoic objective representation, you will learn to describe situations as they are without unnecessary drama or bias, so you can respond with wisdom and calm.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: So to begin, find a comfortable position, sit upright, shoulders relaxed, hands resting gently, and close your eyes.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Take a deep breath in, hold for a moment and slowly exhale.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Again, inhale deeply and release tension as you breathe out.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Let your mind settle into stillness.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Today we will practice seeing things as they truly are, without distortion or unnecessary judgment.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: As Marcus Aurelius wrote, You have power over your mind, not outside events.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Realize this and you will find strength.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Bring to mind a moment from yesterday or from recent past when you felt frustration, anger or disappointment.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: Perhaps you were criticized, someone spoke harshly, or planned didn't go as expected.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Hold that moment gently in your mind, as if you are watching it unfold from a small distance.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Now instead of replaying the emotions, focus only on the raw facts.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: What actually happened?
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Imagine you are a camera recording the scene.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: What were the exact words spoken?
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: What were the physical actions that took place?
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: What events occurred without any interpretation?
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Describe it plainly in your mind, removing all emotional labels.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: For example, instead of I was unfairly criticized by my boss, say to yourself, My manager pointed out three areas in my report that needed improvement and asked me to correct them by tomorrow.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: Instead of that driver was rude and cut me off on purpose, say a car moved into my lane in front of me, causing me to break.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Notice how removing emotional language instantly reduces the intensity of your reaction.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Take a deep breath in, and let go of unnecessary interpretations as you exhale.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Now acknowledge your initial emotional reaction to this event.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Ask yourself what did I feel?
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: What emotion was it?
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: And what judgment did I attach to the event, such as they don't respect me, or this is unfair, or I always get treated this way.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: Recognize that these emotions come from your interpretation, not the event itself.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: As Epictetus famously reminds us, it isn't the things themselves that disturb us, but the judgments we attach to them.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: Say to yourself, I acknowledge that I felt that emotion, but this is my reaction, not an inherent property of the event.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: I'll say that sentence again because there's a lot of wisdom in this.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: I acknowledge that I felt X emotion, but this is my reaction, not an inherent property of the event.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: Take a deep breath in, and as you exhale, release any personal attachment to the event.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: It is simply an event, nothing more and nothing less.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: Now reframe the situation in a way that serves you.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: Ask yourself, is this situation as bad as I originally thought?
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: Is there another more neutral way to view this?
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: What constructive action can I take now?
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: For example, instead of I was insulted, reframe it as I received feedback that I can choose to act on or ignore.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Instead of this is a disaster, reframe it as this is an unexpected challenge that I can manage.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: Let this new objective clarity settle in your mind.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: Breathe deeply, feeling lighter and more in control.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Now, and finally, decide on your next rational step.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: If it was feedback, will you act on it constructively?
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: If it was a misunderstanding, will you clarify calmly?
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: If it was an uncontrollable event, will you let it go?
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: Feel your mind become steady, like calm water reflecting reality as it is, clear and undisturbed.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: As you gently bring your awareness back, feel this sense of clarity stay with you.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: You will see things as they are today, not as your emotions distort them.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: You will move through the day with a calm, measured mind, responding with reason rather than reaction.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: Take a final deep breath in and exhale completely.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: When you're ready, open your eyes.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: Go forward today with clear vision and steady purpose, and keep coming back to this, and keep coming back to this meditation as often as you need to to make this a mental habit, an automatic process in your mind.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Go forward today with clear vision and steady purpose.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: This is the end of the meditation.
