Transcript
- Lucas: Luna, ready for another episode of Learn Telugu with Fexingo? Luna: Absolutely! Last time we learned some temple words. I've been practicing. Lucas: Oh good. Today let's build on that — asking for blessings and expressing devotion. Luna: I like that. Very practical for actually visiting a temple. Lucas: Right. So first phrase: నాకు దేవుడికి మొక్కాలి. It means 'I want to pray to God.' Lucas: Listen: నాకు దేవుడికి మొక్కాలి. Luna: నాకు దేవుడికి మొక్కాలి. Oh, that's a mouthful! Let me try again: నాకు దేవుడికి మొక్కాలి. Lucas: That's it! నాకు means 'to me' or 'I want', దేవుడికి means 'to God', మొక్కాలి means 'to pray'. Luna: So literally 'to me to God to pray'. Lucas: Yes, in Telugu word order: I-to God-to pray-want. Say it once more? Luna: నాకు దేవుడికి మొక్కాలి. Lucas: Perfect. Now when you're at the temple and you want to ask for a blessing, you say: భగవంతుడు ఆశీర్వదించాలి. That's 'May God bless.' Lucas: భగవంతుడు ఆశీర్వదించాలి. Luna: భగవంతుడు ఆశీర్వదించాలి. Wow, that's a long one too. భగవంతుడు ఆశీర్వదించాలి. Lucas: Great. భగవంతుడు means God, ఆశీర్వదించాలి means bless. Luna: So it's like a prayer. Can I use it after I pray? Lucas: Exactly. You can say it as a wish. Now, a useful question: గుడి ఎప్పుడు తెరుస్తారు? That's 'When does the temple open?' Lucas: గుడి ఎప్పుడు తెరుస్తారు? Luna: గుడి ఎప్పుడు తెరుస్తారు? గుడి is temple, ఎప్పుడు is when, తెరుస్తారు is open? Lucas: Yes! You got it. తెరుస్తారు is a polite form of 'open'. So you can ask the priest or anyone. Luna: గుడి ఎప్పుడు తెరుస్తారు? I like that. Lucas: Now imagine you're with a friend and you want to know which temple they like: నీకు ఎక్కడ ఇష్టం? 'Where do you like?' Lucas: నీకు ఎక్కడ ఇష్టం? Luna: నీకు ఎక్కడ ఇష్టం? నీకు is 'to you', ఎక్కడ is 'where', ఇష్టం is 'like'. Lucas: Right. So it's 'to you where is liking?' Telugu uses నీకు for 'you' in questions like this. Luna: నీకు ఎక్కడ ఇష్టం? That's useful for asking someone's favorite temple. Lucas: Yeah. Let's do a little scene. Say you're at the temple entrance, you want to pray. What do you say? Luna: నాకు దేవుడికి మొక్కాలి. Lucas: And you ask the priest when it opens? Luna: గుడి ఎప్పుడు తెరుస్తారు? Lucas: Then after praying, you say for a blessing? Luna: భగవంతుడు ఆశీర్వదించాలి. Lucas: And if a friend asks which temple you like, you can say నాకు తిరుపతి ఇష్టం — 'I like Tirupati.' Luna: Oh, so I can substitute a place name. నాకు తిరుపతి ఇష్టం. Lucas: Exactly. Let's practice all four again. Lucas: Beautiful. You know, if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Telugu, honestly, if today was worth a coffee to you, that's the link — buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Yeah, it's a small way to keep the show ad-free and going. And we appreciate it. Lucas: So back to our phrases. Imagine you're at a temple in Tirupati. What do you say to the priest? Luna: గుడి ఎప్పుడు తెరుస్తారు? Lucas: He says, 'Five in the morning.' Then you say... Luna: నాకు దేవుడికి మొక్కాలి. Lucas: And after praying? Luna: భగవంతుడు ఆశీర్వదించాలి. Lucas: Then your friend asks, నీకు ఎక్కడ ఇష్టం? Luna: నాకు ఇక్కడ ఇష్టం — 'I like here.' Lucas: Oh, nice adaptation! నాకు ఇక్కడ ఇష్టం. I love that. Luna: So we can use ఇష్టం with places. Cool. Lucas: Yeah. Let's do one more round: Lucas: Excellent work today, Luna. You've got four solid phrases for the temple. Luna: Thank you! I feel ready to visit a temple and actually speak a little Telugu. Lucas: That's the goal. Practice these and see you next time. Luna: See you! నాకు దేవుడికి మొక్కాలి!
