A proper examination of the oral cavity is crucial. It should start by a thorough visual inspection oof all the intra-oral soft tissue including cheeks, palate, throat, floor of the mouth and the tuberosity and retromolar areas. the oral examination should include a periodontal charting that is thoroughly done, including probing of the pockets, recording recessions, amount of keratinized tissue and inspection for cavities.
