Transcript
- 0:06All right, and away we go, Miller and Condon on a Monday.
- 0:10Welcome to the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:12Trent Condon, Ken Miller, setting sail on a college
- 0:15football season. And we're glad that you're
- 0:17starting your week here off with us as Trent and I will take you
- 0:20until noon at that time. Off the bench, Lucas and Sean
- 0:24from 2:00 until 5. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:26program. We will start with our first
- 0:29guest of the week, 25 minutes from now, a Bill Seals from
- 0:32cyclonereport.com. We'll talk Iowa State, K State.
- 0:35Iowa State put out their depth chart today, which is good.
- 0:38Can't wait till Wednesday. There's another report coming
- 0:40out that I can't wait to see. We'll see that one.
- 0:44Sure. We'll have some fun with the
- 0:45first availability report put out by the clones in advance of
- 0:49their K State game. So we'll talk to Bill Seals
- 0:51coming up here at 12:25. Mitch Holtis on the Kansas City
- 0:55Chiefs, back from a trip to Seattle.
- 0:58Talk about the Chiefs, where they're at.
- 1:00I want to talk about Kingdom 2. I got through 2 episodes over
- 1:04the weekend. Not a bad not a bad ESPN Plus
- 1:07program. Anyways, Mitch Holtis 12/25,
- 1:11Papa John's throughout the state of Iowa sponsor that.
- 1:14Then Matt Snyder on baseball. A lot of ground to cover with
- 1:16him. Man Oh man, Rob Manfred dropped
- 1:18a bombshell last night, didn't he?
- 1:20This realignment talk certainly got some wheels spinning as to
- 1:23what these divisions may look like once they expand baseball
- 1:27from 30 to 32 teams. I don't think it's going to
- 1:30happen in the next couple of years, but it's certainly on his
- 1:33radar. So Snyder on M LB and then Scott
- 1:36Dockerman on college football. The proposed, is it 2028 or 24?
- 1:41Whatever it is, both, both or both are on the table.
- 1:44I like the 24 better. I can do the 28.
- 1:47We'll talk about that. We'll talk about the Big 10.
- 1:49We'll talk about Iowa with Scott Dockerman at 1:30.
- 1:52Trent will make some picks. Circus sports sponsor those.
- 1:57Those come up at about 1:50. So, so much ground to cover.
- 2:00Your Bears looked unstoppable early in that game last night,
- 2:04especially the first drive. I mean that was that was a thing
- 2:06of beauty. back-to-back to back passes to tight ends to get
- 2:10Caleb Williams going. A long pass, a long pass, but a
- 2:12nice catch and run for the first score of the game.
- 2:15What was he, Williams six or seven?
- 2:17I think on the 1st Dr. OK, it's pre season football, but Bears
- 2:21fans needed to see that. In my opinion.
- 2:22They did last night. We'll see what it means, big
- 2:24picture. Well, this is a Bears fan
- 2:26sitting in this seat and before the game began, I was mowing
- 2:31last night. It was hot.
- 2:32We did the fair. Went to fair yesterday.
- 2:35Yeah, So sweated out a lot. Yeah, I bet everything that went
- 2:38in got sweated right back out. But as I was doing it formulated
- 2:42before the game began, I went through what I've been reading
- 2:45for the last three weeks now, and every single, even the
- 2:51positive kind of spin that you read from time to time was
- 2:55there's still kinks. And I couldn't get over this
- 2:59young quarterback that needs reps in this new system, him not
- 3:03playing in game one. And if it went poorly like I
- 3:06anticipated, it was last. Of course you did.
- 3:08You're a Bears. Fan and it goes back to the
- 3:10Friday practice. They had six procedural
- 3:13penalties before they could even get a snap off in against the
- 3:16Bills on Friday. And I was so ready.
- 3:20I had all my talking points. I was ready to go and I was
- 3:22going to come in here and yell at you.
- 3:24Yeah, that's fair. I was going to yell at you.
- 3:26Broncos fan, so why not? Right now, I was going to yell
- 3:28at you because you sold me a bill of goods with Justin Fields
- 3:32and I never wanted to believe and I believed you and you were
- 3:35doing the exact same thing with Caleb Williams.
- 3:38And then seven O 2, the ball game starts last night and all
- 3:42of a sudden you talk about a 180.
- 3:46I took it hook like in the sinker last.
- 3:47Night, he was great. I for the first time, I mean, I
- 3:50always sell the Bears to my little man Jack at home.
- 3:53We took it to another level last night.
- 3:55What we're talking about getting new jerseys, what we're going to
- 3:58do Monday Night Football. I'm Marty.
- 3:59Hey. We're both getting jerseys
- 4:01matching numbers. Absolutely.
- 4:03We're, we're, we're diving deep into it.
- 4:05When the girls are upstairs watching the Viking side, we're
- 4:07going to be in the man cave. What we're going to do?
- 4:09What do you want to have for food?
- 4:11Like I'm laying it all out there.
- 4:12I am absolutely selling. A Monday nighter.
- 4:14For Monday night. Is he late for school Tuesday?
- 4:17He might be. It's going to be a late night
- 4:18and we're going to make it. So I'm selling all of this stuff
- 4:21and it's and it's dumb, but it's fandom, Sure.
- 4:24And that's what fandom does. Because in the end, we're both
- 4:27fans. Yes, we want to play it down the
- 4:29middle. We don't want to have Homer
- 4:31Radio. That's not what we're looking
- 4:32for. But the fandom, it still seeps
- 4:35in for me, even as long as we've been doing this.
- 4:37And that part last night, I had everything ready to go.
- 4:42And then you watch and you see something.
- 4:44Boy, he looks shy. I haven't seen, no, not at all.
- 4:46And Beija looked good in his in his stint.
- 4:48He did anyways. Yeah, good for your Bears out
- 4:51outstanding for that first drive.
- 4:53I mean, that first drive, that's all you need to see.
- 4:55And I I'll be honest, I didn't see much more after that.
- 4:57Saw the second drive, saw some Beija.
- 4:59But I was watching the Little League Sunday night baseball.
- 5:02It's it's over the top. I know I sound like old man and
- 5:05I am. It's just over the top.
- 5:07Yeah. And the kid.
- 5:08We don't need kids. I don't need kids.
- 5:10That's that's pretty grumpy there.
- 5:12Yeah, I know. Just broadcast the.
- 5:13Game. Yeah, that once a year you can
- 5:15handle it. Come on, old Van Miller.
- 5:16Was asked to do it last night and we got through it anyways.
- 5:19So, so much to get to. Obviously the first depth chart
- 5:22has come up for Iowa State. I don't know if there's a shock
- 5:26on there. Maybe 3 freshmen in the in the
- 5:29two deeps at positions where you know, I can see, maybe you know,
- 5:33receive or something. But these are big dudes.
- 5:35Backup nose guard behind Dom Orange, an offensive lineman,
- 5:39maybe 2 offensive lineman in that spot.
- 5:41Carson Hansen seems to have been named RB.
- 5:44One, the two transfer receivers are not on top of the depth
- 5:48chart. I'm not sure if that's just the
- 5:49way Campbell goes about his business.
- 5:51And you're going to see Seoul eventually A play more than over
- 5:54B, who's a big dude 565. We'll we'll see where that goes,
- 5:59but in Townsend likewise and night, nice to see at the tight
- 6:03end position that our guy Ben Bramer is right on top of it.
- 6:06Although there is an OR with Berkel and I like Berkel, but
- 6:09those may be the shocks to me. And I don't think we learned
- 6:13anything that we weren't kind of expecting.
- 6:15I'll say one more. I thought Berzina because we
- 6:18heard so much about him this time last year that this is
- 6:21going to be this is Mike Rose Junior, right?
- 6:24He was going to play right from the jump and Berzina did, but he
- 6:28got hurt. But Cooper rebel had a had a
- 6:30nice year when he was on the field.
- 6:32So that'll be fun to watch. Jameson Patton getting named a
- 6:35starter. Trey Bell has won one of the
- 6:37quarterbacks cornerback spots. So and I don't make I don't take
- 6:42anything away with the backup quarterback.
- 6:44I think it's alphabetically. Do you see that Matsky over
- 6:46Moberly, MA as opposed to MO? Is that the case?
- 6:49Well, that's not the case. So just go down one spot to the
- 6:52next running backs. Our point Dylan lead Aiden
- 6:54Flora. Yes, that's not alphabetical.
- 6:56No fair. So.
- 6:58That's a good point. One thing I know with I watch a
- 7:01lot of Moberly called a lot of Moberly's games in high school.
- 7:04Not the same with Mansky, but. As far as you haven't seen him
- 7:07at. Times right, right in comparison
- 7:10kind of Moberly at the high school, he was a great high
- 7:12school quarterback, no doubt, but he had a good arm, but he
- 7:16never wowed you arm wise. Mansky going back to those
- 7:19reports and remember Bill Seals will join us today talking about
- 7:23his arm strength was one of his strengths when he went to Elite
- 7:2511 and when he was doing those things.
- 7:27And I always wondered with Conor Moberly, not that he could work
- 7:32in a system and do the things. Does he have the requisite arm
- 7:35strength? That was always my concern with
- 7:36him and that would be my guess because and again it's just a
- 7:40guess. I have not seen Minsky go, but
- 7:42in terms of just raw, getting that ball down the field,
- 7:45hitting that 10 yard stop route and getting it there in a hurry,
- 7:49I think that that was where Mansky would have a step forward
- 7:51from overly And, and that was always my question with him.
- 7:54Not that he couldn't make most of the throws.
- 7:56It was arm strength with him. So that's probably where I would
- 7:58go. But you're right, you go
- 8:00through, there's a lot of ORS on there.
- 8:02That was definitely one of the more eye opening ORS I think on
- 8:04the def. Yeah, I I never read it that
- 8:06right to it that way Trent. But the the more you yeah,
- 8:10you're how does the percent right don't have to go very far
- 8:12L before F. So that or my or theory flies
- 8:16out the window. Sounds like Townsend's going to
- 8:18be the return guy. Both kick and punt.
- 8:20He's got that. There's no ORS there but floor
- 8:22is right behind him. Canardi is expected one that
- 8:25Tyler Perkins the punter. So we will see.
- 8:28We will see. And you know, it strikes me just
- 8:30being on Twitter as much as I am.
- 8:32Bush Cyclone fans are really digging this Ireland trip.
- 8:34Oh yeah, and you. Know it?
- 8:36Kind of you kind of not jealousy.
- 8:40There's, there's part of me that I'd love to see the country.
- 8:43Sure, you know, because it's this, the history, the castles,
- 8:47you know, the, the land, water, the old pubs.
- 8:52They look pretty cool anyways. I talked to a couple Cyclone
- 8:55fans, one that's on a trip right now is already over there and
- 8:58they're absolutely loving it. Another that they're Irish and
- 9:03they didn't want to go over. They've never been to Ireland
- 9:06before. They didn't want to go over.
- 9:07As much as they love the Cyclones, if they were going to
- 9:09do it, they wanted to do it where it's go.
- 9:12Look up family, you know, lineage, that kind of thing.
- 9:15It's kind of hard when you got 10,000 of your cycling brethren
- 9:19do it the same. It's just a different kind of
- 9:21trip. But the for the people that are
- 9:22there, you're right there with you.
- 9:25Condon, an Irish name, it's on my bucket list.
- 9:28Hoping to get there at some point in my life.
- 9:31And yeah, seeing the people, the pictures, everything that goes
- 9:33along with it, absolutely great. The one more take away from the
- 9:37depth chart, yeah is where my eyes went was the offensive
- 9:41line. At the starting center.
- 9:43And or or or Dylan Barrett or Brenda Black or Jim Boniface and
- 9:50now they still. Haven't decided.
- 9:52No, and that it's a pretty big concern for me coming into this
- 9:57one. As we know the slow starts
- 9:59almost every single one of the years.
- 10:00The slow starts we talked about with Iowa State, you can take it
- 10:03back to offensive line play. Last year.
- 10:07I don't know how they did it because that was as good early
- 10:09in the season as they looked in the offensive line and they did
- 10:11without Jalen Travis, who not only they brought.
- 10:14In how many games did he miss a couple?
- 10:16I think it was 3, something like that.
- 10:18He was back, maybe game four. He was a huge part of what they
- 10:20did and what they still built into.
- 10:23Came a fourth round pick by the Colts.
- 10:24But they were able to kind of cobble it together early on.
- 10:27Something that is the ORS, I don't know.
- 10:30No, there's a lot of ORS on here and we know that's the way that
- 10:32Mac cable does it. So you can't overreact to it.
- 10:35But it was just one of those. I wish that was solidified.
- 10:39Yeah, I'm with you. I, I'm, I'm all over the place
- 10:41with this team, Trent. I, I, I can see them starting on
- 10:44three. I could see them starting on
- 10:46three. I think South Dakota's going to
- 10:47be an absolute trap. Wow, South Dakota's going.
- 10:51What are they going to do on Saturday?
- 10:52Watch the K State Iowa State game?
- 10:53Absolutely right With a former Iowa State signal caller licking
- 10:56his chops. You, you don't think that
- 10:59they've been, they've been preparing for Iowa State game
- 11:02one for them all offseason. Of course they are, right.
- 11:05And and have been, they're going to follow suit to all the other
- 11:07FCS teams that have come in there in the past.
- 11:09Then the number what they're top five team.
- 11:11They are, yes. A top five not #1 Nope, not to
- 11:13go to state, I'll give you that. But I bet I'm just and I'm not
- 11:16picking them yet to lose to South Dakota.
- 11:19But I'm just saying it's going to be tough and the point
- 11:21spreads less than two touch. Yeah, yeah.
- 11:23I was just going to say it. Yeah, look at headline after 13
- 11:251/2, right? 12 and a half 13 is what I saw.
- 11:28So that's out there already in a short week coming off that trip.
- 11:33Yep. And jackets to crazy talk.
- 11:37Though it is, I'm not going there.
- 11:38I'm not going there. I'm just saying I can convince
- 11:40myself that I can, they can go this path.
- 11:43I can also convince myself that they're two and O going into
- 11:45Sihon. Oh absolutely.
- 11:46And they absolutely can win that game.
- 11:48I mean, all the goofy things that have happened in Jack
- 11:51Trice, the ball that is bounced. I was wasting only every time in
- 11:55that building. Well, at some point it's an
- 11:57oblong ball. It's going to bounce the other
- 11:59way you'd anticipate and it doesn't take a whole lot of
- 12:02stretch. They've won two out of the last
- 12:03three in this series. It's the bugaboo for Matt
- 12:07Campbell was Kirk Ference. He couldn't figure it out early
- 12:09in his career. That has changed, winning two
- 12:11out of three. Now the one final step is to do
- 12:14it in your own building, something they haven't done
- 12:15since 2011, but that's going to come down to the wire too.
- 12:18That's. Crazy to me that that it's been
- 12:20that long since they won at home.
- 12:22It's unthinkable. It is, it really is because the
- 12:24series is kind of a back and forth.
- 12:26Right. You know.
- 12:28You can go both ways. I see this team, it's not a
- 12:31stretch that they're back in the championship game again, seven
- 12:35and two in this conference. That'll probably get them in,
- 12:37yeah, with all the parents. That's what it was a year ago,
- 12:40and to get to 7 and 2 doesn't matter what happens.
- 12:44And that game of Jack Trice against the Hawkeyes, It doesn't
- 12:46matter if you stub your toe against South Dakota.
- 12:48It's only your conference record.
- 12:49That's all that's there. Boy, get off on the right foot
- 12:52Saturday. Get off on the right foot.
- 12:53The tie break. You'll have it.
- 12:55The head to head goes in your favor for one of these two
- 12:57schools. Both of these two schools are 7
- 13:00and 2:00-ish. Massive, massive game.
- 13:03And I can't believe it's it's coming up in six days.
- 13:05It's unbelievable that it's here, is it not?
- 13:07What do you make about the two transfer receivers that did not
- 13:10at least see their name on the top of the depth chart to begin?
- 13:13Now, to be fair, there's that big old 2 words OR yes or Green
- 13:17or Townsend Overby or solo. What do we make?
- 13:21I think it's just guys that have.
- 13:24Been in the program I do too. I don't anticipate that we're
- 13:27going to see overby out snap. So I don't anticipate that Eli
- 13:34Green's going to see more snaps than Xavier Townsend.
- 13:37And and in fact, I think it's going to be pretty significant
- 13:39edge for both of the transfers coming in just a week and a nod
- 13:42to the guys that have been in the program.
- 13:44But over but over be kind of, I mean, he kind of tantalized.
- 13:48He's 65, he's big. He's one of those big Iowa State
- 13:51receivers. You know, we'll see where it
- 13:53goes. All right, where I want to go
- 13:54with you because this when I heard the man for last night on
- 13:57the broadcast, yes, talk about expansion.
- 14:02I don't like the teams, Charlotte and Nashville.
- 14:06I mean, come on. Let's rock it, Charlotte.
- 14:09I thought there's no one of them.
- 14:11There's no. Montreal on the list?
- 14:12Well, they had a chance. They did, but a lot of teams get
- 14:15second chances, thankfully. OK, I I get it too needle.
- 14:20But the but the way the way that divisions are going to find me a
- 14:24more difficult division than Red Sox, Mets, Yankees, Phillies.
- 14:28Yeah, it's going the way the NFL, it's going to be 814
- 14:32divisions, right? The North, the Reds, this
- 14:35American League, obviously. Yeah, I should say that because
- 14:37we're crossing over the the American League East will be Red
- 14:40Sox, Mets, Yankees, Phillies. Then the North, the Reds,
- 14:44Cleveland, DEET, Jays, Mid-Atlantic, Orioles,
- 14:50Charlotte, Pirates, Nationals. That's a lot of yuck.
- 14:53SE more yuck Braves, Marlins, Nashville and the Rays.
- 15:01Here's one Midwest. Cubs, White Sox, Brewers.
- 15:06Twins. All right.
- 15:08Southwest Astros, Royals, Cardinals, Rangers.
- 15:11So the Cubs and the Cardinals are split.
- 15:15Pacific Coast, Rockies, A's, Mariners, Giants, and the West
- 15:22would be the Diamondbacks, Angels, Dodgers, Padres.
- 15:26So the Giants, Dodgers is gone. The Cubs Cards is gone.
- 15:30The only one of the three big quote rivalries that survives
- 15:34Red Sox Yankees, by the way, we'll see Sunday night in Sunday
- 15:38Night Baseball. Do we need American League and
- 15:42National League I? Don't know if we do.
- 15:44I mean they split it in the NF. I fell that's why I'm going
- 15:46American League. But how do you, I mean the
- 15:49record books, everything's not everything starts new, but all
- 15:53of those division records, etcetera, league versus league,
- 15:56we're about to, you know, full stop, another chapter, the home
- 16:02runs, the the RBI, those kind of things.
- 16:04They stayed the same. I just wonder pitchers don't hit
- 16:09anymore. No DHS in both leagues.
- 16:12You're playing anybody, everybody.
- 16:14Anyway, Now, every year with the new schedule, is it time to do
- 16:18away with that? Is it time to move past that?
- 16:21This one's from CBS, and it has the Yankees, the Red Sox, the
- 16:27Mets and the Phillies together in a division.
- 16:30Yep, that's about Jim Bowden's, too.
- 16:32The North Brewers, Cubs, Twins, White Sox.
- 16:35So that's different that they they.
- 16:37Bowden called that one the Midwest.
- 16:41And then? You did.
- 16:41Did you have Cubs and Cardinals together?
- 16:43Did you? Say, well, his two expansion
- 16:44candidates were Nashville and Portland was the other one that
- 16:48he had. Yeah.
- 16:49So the Northwest becomes the A's, the Giants, the Mariners
- 16:52and Portland in a division where the Cardinals then would end up
- 16:56in a division with the Rockies, the Royals and Nashville.
- 17:02Yeah. I.
- 17:04Don't love it, but I'm also willing to listen.
- 17:08There's a lot of things on the get go I don't like initially.
- 17:13Maybe I just look at it in the division that the team that I
- 17:15root for in is winnable and all of a sudden, no, it's still
- 17:19winnable. But the Cubs have more money
- 17:21than the rest of everybody by a significant margin.
- 17:24And then the Northeast is asinine.
- 17:26You got both New York teams, Bananas, plus the Red Sox and
- 17:29the fair. That's not a division.
- 17:30It's not fair, no. It's it's not, I don't care give
- 17:33a crap about any of those 14. No, but it's not fair, right?
- 17:36We're trying to get some kind of.
- 17:37Parody of balance, yes. And that absolutely doesn't
- 17:40happen there. It's is it going to happen
- 17:43though? We got two teams that are
- 17:44playing a minor league parks right now.
- 17:46I know, I know can. Can we figure that part out
- 17:48before we start worrying? Well, it's going to get to Las
- 17:50Vegas and it sounds like the Tropicana.
- 17:52They, they for the for months they just moved dirt around
- 17:56thinking and they put up a big wall last time when we were in
- 17:59Vegas. Did you drive by the ballpark on
- 18:01your way to the airport? Probably, but maybe I wasn't.
- 18:04OK, so I, I would, I look for it because I and I asked, asked my
- 18:08guy to take his by there. And there was a bunch of walls
- 18:11of like, I don't know, you can't see through them.
- 18:14Just where the Tropicana once stood.
- 18:16I wanted to get a peek and they're just moving dirt around
- 18:19for like months. But now there's actually those
- 18:21cranes are in there and they're dumping in cement.
- 18:23So it sounds as though that's going to happen.
- 18:26But as far as Tampa Bay, I don't know, Yeah.
- 18:31Well, at this point can't they move anywhere?
- 18:32Yeah, Montreal. Might as well.
- 18:34Might as well, we'll have to build a downtown ballpark
- 18:37anyways. 12:20 We're coming up Iowa State conversation next
- 18:40with Bill Seals. He will join us
- 18:43cyclonereport.com team leaves Wednesday and the the team
- 18:49personnel will also be on the second plate.
- 18:52Broom. I, I told you I talked to Brent
- 18:54Bloom. I believe he told me this.
- 18:56I don't think I'm making this up.
- 18:57I'm sure I heard him right that they had to get permission from
- 19:01the Des Moines International Airport for the size of plane
- 19:05that they're flying out of here on.
- 19:06Oh, OK. Does that make sense?
- 19:07Couple of bigger ones. Well, yeah, you got to have more
- 19:09fuel and all those things to make a non-stop.
- 19:11Yeah, a lot. More runway more and and and
- 19:15since we're talking airports to see Southwest made their made
- 19:18their announcement today as far as route changes.
- 19:19No, no longer will we be connecting through Saint Louis.
- 19:24Back to Midway in Chicago. The bells ring on the banners
- 19:28fly. I hate it.
- 19:29If I want to go to Chicago, I don't wanna go to Saint Louis.
- 19:31Then back to Chicago. It's now Des Moines, Chicago,
- 19:34like it should be starting in April.
- 19:36I think of 2000. You love Southwest.
- 19:38I do. I do Bags.
- 19:40I was gonna say bags fly free, but that's not the case anymore.
- 19:431220, Miller and Condon underway.
- 19:45It's a Monday. Bill Seals next.
- 19:46Mitch Holt is still to come. This hour you're listening to
- 19:49the Iowa Sports Radio Network. I'm Millory Condon, welcome
- 20:07back. Coming up on 12:30 on a Monday,
- 20:10the Iowa Sports Radio Network. Trent Condon, Ken Miller with
- 20:14you until 2. Mitch, hold us the voice of the
- 20:16Chiefs in about 20 minutes right now, Bill Seals, he covers Iowa
- 20:19State, cyclonereport.com. cyclonereport.com for Bill
- 20:23Seals. Bill Trenton.
- 20:24Ken, happy game week to you Sir. The Cyclones released their
- 20:29depth chart earlier today. By the way, they are now a
- 20:33three-point dog across the board.
- 20:35I saw some three and a halfs. It's three across the board
- 20:38everywhere as of this second. That aside, Bill Seals joins us.
- 20:42Bill, just welcome, first of all, your thoughts.
- 20:45What surprised you listening to Campbell and his coaching staff
- 20:49all the August training camp press conferences?
- 20:52Anything surprise you Bill, when the depth chart was released?
- 20:57Well, what let's let's go ahead and start at the top.
- 21:01Alex Mansky and Connor Moberly on the OR line as as the number
- 21:062 quarterback. I think that's noteworthy.
- 21:08I wouldn't have put it at that happening quite yet, but just
- 21:13goes to show Mansky's really come on and in fall camp and
- 21:17that could be interesting. Probably not going to see, well,
- 21:20barring injury, I should say. We're not going to see either
- 21:22one of those guys in in Ireland, but it will be interesting how
- 21:26those reps are are kind of divvied up in the week one game
- 21:31the following week against South Dakota.
- 21:33So moving down the line, Hanson now a clear one line over a
- 21:38Boostama. If I recall, I think those guys
- 21:41were on an or line much of last season, but a little bit of
- 21:44clarity there. I believe Hanson going to get
- 21:46the start now at running back tight end, no surprises there.
- 21:51Wide receiver. I think maybe the lack of
- 21:54clarity there a little bit of a surprise.
- 21:57All three of those spots guys are on an or line and Dominic
- 22:01Overby we've heard good reports on the red shirt freshman most
- 22:06of camp and he is one of those on an or line with chase so well
- 22:10the East Carolina transfer. So really goes to to show you
- 22:14what Overby's done in the in the preseason, Eskeld on an or line
- 22:20with Carson Brown and then Eli Green re emerging.
- 22:23He's healthy this year was nicked up with a lot of stuff
- 22:27from what I understand in 2024. He's on an or line with the
- 22:31Xavier Townsend. So offensive line.
- 22:34No, no surprises really. I don't think with the tackles
- 22:38you still got that Tyler Miller, James Neal there.
- 22:41There still is a battle at center between Dylan Barrett,
- 22:46Brendan Black, Jim Boniface. That's yet to be be determined.
- 22:49I think the one who doesn't take hold of that center job on
- 22:54Saturday between Barrett and Black probably switches over to
- 22:58right guard. And I think Jim Boniface, if he
- 23:01doesn't get it, I think you see him shift into like a James Neal
- 23:05type of role for this season. Obviously injuries could impact
- 23:09that, but kind of that heavy tackle, eligible 6th offensive
- 23:14lineman, I think Boniface flexes out to do that.
- 23:16So yeah, that that's about kind of what stands out about the
- 23:20offense. Did you guys have any questions
- 23:23about the offense or you want me to give you the defensive?
- 23:27All. Right.
- 23:30Well, yeah, I had speculated kind of the last couple weeks
- 23:34that Tomatoa McDonough would be the starting Leo Rush and Edge
- 23:40guy. And he is he's exactly I think
- 23:47we saw that over the weekend. What was going to happen there.
- 23:50So inside Dominic Orange, the number one at nose guard.
- 23:55I I still think, well, they list the four man front, but they'll
- 23:59play a three mostly. So I the the number one
- 24:03defensive tackle is the mayor Hawk.
- 24:05They did it a lot that a lot last season with Jr.
- 24:08Singleton, Dominic Orange. They had those two guys listed
- 24:11on the one line, but I think I think behind Orange probably
- 24:15still will be Zamir Hawk, the who's listed as the number one
- 24:19defensive tackle. But again, it is kind of
- 24:21interesting though. Kamori Moore, a true freshman.
- 24:24He's one of I believe if I'm not.
- 24:29Yeah. Yeah.
- 24:30Well, yeah, yeah, exactly. True freshman in the depth
- 24:33chart. So Vaya Ikakuma was another one
- 24:38at that right guard position, but you shift over to defense.
- 24:42Kamari Moore, we've heard some good reports on him I think over
- 24:46the past couple weeks. He's behind orange there at the
- 24:50nose guard, Elijah Carnell, and also good reports on him.
- 24:54Jace Gilbert, Those two were red shirt freshman shown in the
- 24:58depth chart on 2 lines. Interesting at linebacker too.
- 25:03I think it's not a surprise that didn't really play out the way I
- 25:07thought it would as I was speculating in the preseason
- 25:11because as coaches have said, they've got nine guys there that
- 25:14they're comfortable with. Still a solid 3 deep across the
- 25:17board, but Caleb Bacon switches out to the Will.
- 25:23Cooper Evil was the starting Will last season.
- 25:26He's now the Mike linebacker. Good size on both those guys
- 25:30though. I think you're prototypical
- 25:32inside linebackers. Will McLaughlin, Carson Willich
- 25:36on an OR line at the Sam linebacker.
- 25:39Willich flexes outside. He played a little bit outside
- 25:42early in his career, but noteworthy they moved him back
- 25:46outside and then in the secondary, not a whole lot of
- 25:49surprises. Corner Trey Bell on an OR line
- 25:53with Quinton Taylor. I still think there's going to
- 25:55see the Lindenwood transfer. Bell, though, end up starting
- 25:58there opposite of John Tez, Williams, Jeremiah Cooper,
- 26:02Marcus Neil. Not a shocker.
- 26:04Those two guys are going to start at safety.
- 26:06And then you've got Jameson Patton, the guy we've talked
- 26:11about him for weeks now as once seemingly won over that field
- 26:16safety battle over Tayshawn James.
- 26:19So big preseason out of him and going to get to see him start on
- 26:24Saturday against K State. Want to go back to the backup
- 26:28behind Dominic Orange, and that is Kamari Moore, a guy that was
- 26:31committed to Oklahoma, if he can take us back, a true freshman
- 26:34showing up in the depth chart, that's eye opening in its own
- 26:36right. And also Iowa State getting a
- 26:39guy that was committed to Oklahoma, that's also kind of an
- 26:41eye opener. So can you take us back to his
- 26:43recruitment a little bit? And the guy that already looks a
- 26:45part at 61320 is an 18. Well, I, you know what, I, I
- 26:51would like to kind of pat myself on the back one Trent patting
- 26:56myself on the back as we speak here.
- 26:58But I saw Kamari Moore as a coming out of his freshman year
- 27:03at an Under Armour camp down in Kansas City that I was had
- 27:06attended covered and I was just blown away by him at that point.
- 27:12He was beating guy, an interior guy at the time.
- 27:15So he stayed there beating kids that were one to two years older
- 27:20than him and and looked up nothing out there on the
- 27:23recruiting services on him at all.
- 27:26And he was just a revelation that day down and he from the
- 27:29Kansas City area and put some stuff up there about him online
- 27:34and just raving about him. And I think I had a couple
- 27:36videos out there and I don't think it was any more than 24
- 27:42hours later Iowa State became his first offer.
- 27:45So things kind of got started there.
- 27:48I think the Cyclones were in really good shape at the
- 27:50beginning of that. Obviously when Oklahoma comes in
- 27:54with an offer though, I think it wasn't too long after that that
- 27:57he had committed to the Sooners. But then I, I think Oklahoma had
- 28:03had added some other guys at that, none of that similar
- 28:06interior line position. And then, you know, Kamari
- 28:09Moore, I think he liked the situation as it was at Iowa
- 28:13State, maybe a little bit better with the competition coming in
- 28:17there, just the numbers at that position at OU and ends up
- 28:21decommitting and and visits Iowa State and the rest is history.
- 28:25And now he's come in and I think done what I expected him to do
- 28:29when when they signed him and that's make an early impact.
- 28:33And I think very fortuitous timing for Iowa State there,
- 28:37too, because the guy that he's behind is a senior in Dominic
- 28:41Orange. So there's going to be a lot of
- 28:43snaps out there to fill in that 2026.
- 28:46He's off to a good start, though.
- 28:48One name that I I wasn't sure if he's going to be on the depth
- 28:51chart, which is he's got that unfengettable name right, River
- 28:54Peppers, and he did not. He's there's a couple of red
- 28:58shirt freshmen that are listed above him.
- 29:00What does that mean for River Peppers, a 2025 seats special
- 29:04teams guy? What is he going to do?
- 29:06Yeah, I think, Oh yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 29:08I think he's someone that can impact the, the team there.
- 29:11I, I think entered camp on a really high note And I, I think
- 29:17I, I had heard anyway, as they had gotten into camp, maybe hit
- 29:20a little bit of a freshman wall and no shame in that.
- 29:24He's still someone I think very big into their plans in the
- 29:27future. But we did hear over the last
- 29:29few weeks Dylan Lee's name get brought up a little bit and, and
- 29:33the the camp that he had and I think he really is rounded into
- 29:36form and we all expected him probably to be that number three
- 29:40behind Hanson and Sama. And that's kind of the way it's
- 29:43playing out right now. Talking with Bill Seals as we
- 29:46take a look inside the depth chart for Iowa State and getting
- 29:49ready for a game number one. Well, let's start to peek ahead
- 29:52Bill because it's game week we've we made it it's here and
- 29:56looking at this Kansas State team what my big take away and
- 29:59looking at their depth chart they got a ton of transfers on
- 30:02that offensive line yet they got some guys that are banged up
- 30:05that it's Kansas statewide. I can't wrap my my arms around
- 30:09this K State team as many people are just the questions that they
- 30:12have upfront. What you've been taking a peek
- 30:14at Kansas State? What have you seen?
- 30:15What kind of pops off the page as we get ready for the game
- 30:18Saturday? Yeah, I think that's a good
- 30:20point, Trent. Maybe just some, some question
- 30:23marks there along the offensive line and they, they will,
- 30:26they've got I think a pretty good in IL budget.
- 30:29So they're able to go out and get some guys to fill some holes
- 30:33They've got aside from the depth chart, a new offensive
- 30:37coordinator that's in there. So I think a lot of question
- 30:40marks on on how they will roll out offensively with, with Matt
- 30:46Wells coming in there, former head coach in the Big 12.
- 30:49So Avery Johnson. We we know what what they've got
- 30:53there running back, I think they're very good there as well
- 30:59with Dylan Edwards as well as Joe Jackson.
- 31:03Those two guys, they interesting that they left a pair of running
- 31:07backs in that depth chart, but at Dylan Edwards, one of those.
- 31:11So I think they've got some good experience coming back.
- 31:14Edwards that transferred in from Colorado I believe a year ago.
- 31:19He was there in at K State in 2024.
- 31:22So tight end, another good spot. I think a lot of Cyclone fans
- 31:26familiar with Will Ancio, he was recruited pretty heavily.
- 31:30He's on the two line there. They're going to they're going
- 31:33to play a couple of tight ends there though.
- 31:35And and CEO is is 1 I think a lot of people familiar with.
- 31:40So yeah, I think offensively it it it's just going to be
- 31:44interesting to see how that comes out.
- 31:46Maybe Iowa State. It's kind of a reverse effect of
- 31:50what it has been when they played them in November.
- 31:53Both teams know each other well when you think they would know
- 31:55each other pretty well after playing in the regular season
- 31:59finale at 2024. But here we are at opening 2025.
- 32:04I think a lot of question marks on on both sides really in K
- 32:07state. I think offensively is the the
- 32:09big part there. Bill, I want to spend our last
- 32:12minute with you kind of promoting your site because so
- 32:16many on three subscribers now have access to you.
- 32:19I know you've got a big piece that comes out on Friday, kind
- 32:22of give us the the lay of the land.
- 32:24What happens during the week at Cyclone Report?
- 32:27For those of us that didn't have access to your site prior to
- 32:31this last couple of months, what can we expect, Bill?
- 32:34Well, yeah, we're it's kind of an interesting week 0.
- 32:38This time we'll get into more of kind of a traditional approach
- 32:43next week when we've got that weekly press conference with
- 32:47with Campbell and then we'll get players.
- 32:50They'll also start alternating coordinators week to week that
- 32:53we'll get as well. So that'll be ahead of the South
- 32:56Dakota game. But we did we did already get
- 32:59Campbell and players on Thursday.
- 33:01So there was a lot of that coverage that you'll get game
- 33:04weeks last week out of those guys.
- 33:07So, yeah, a lot of a lot of coverage though outside of the
- 33:11OR from the game week press conferences that are that that
- 33:16we'll have to look forward to player features out of that
- 33:20Campbell synopsis notebooks. And then also the first what
- 33:27couple weeks? Well, I, I should say
- 33:28traditional weeks are home games week one, Week 2.
- 33:32So a lot of recruiting coverage to look forward to as well.
- 33:36And if you've been on my site, it's the the the largest network
- 33:40right now, I think out there of recruiting analysts now that
- 33:44Rivals and on three have merged. So you've noticed the recruiting
- 33:47coverage on top of the stuff that I'm already doing has
- 33:51increased, I think tenfold. So a ton of recruiting
- 33:54information to look forward to game day visitor rosters and
- 33:58then recaps from those guys starting the the weekend of
- 34:02their visits. So that that's kind of the
- 34:04rundown of it though, as we will get into kind of a traditional
- 34:09game week next week. But still plenty of good stuff
- 34:12to roll out here. I've got a breakdown of the
- 34:14defensive depth chart coming up here in the next probably hour
- 34:18or so. Already rolled out the offense
- 34:20here about an hour ago. So a lot of good stuff still to
- 34:24come. Good stuff.
- 34:25I was told this morning that you're going to join off the
- 34:28bench with Sean and Lucas on Friday and with Miller and
- 34:31Condon, you'll be here on Monday.
- 34:32So lots of radio opportunities coming up this season as well.
- 34:36Good, good stuff, Bill. Thank you, Bill.
- 34:38Seal cycle import.com, part of on Three Media.
- 34:41Bill, we'll talk to you in a week.
- 34:42Thank you. Sounds good, guys.
- 34:43Appreciate it. Yep.
- 34:44Good to talk to you, Bill Seals as we check in on
- 34:47cyclonereport.com. All right, Mitch Holtis is next.
- 34:50Miller and Condon, it's a Monday.
- 34:52It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 34:56I'm Millery Condon. Welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio
- 34:59Network. We take you until 2:00.
- 35:01Let's get right to our friend Mitch Holtis, The Voice of the
- 35:05Kansas City Chiefs. They play the Bears coming up
- 35:07this weekend. Mitch, I appreciate you coming
- 35:10on as we always do, Papa John's throughout the state of Iowa.
- 35:13Sponsor this. I want to get to the report.
- 35:15I'm anxious to hear. I watched with my own two eyes.
- 35:18Josh Simmons moving men against the will of where they wanted to
- 35:21go. You got something?
- 35:22I hate to say it as a Broncos fan, but it looks like another
- 35:25good pick. But I want to start with the
- 35:27Kingdom. I'm 2 episodes into it.
- 35:29I really enjoyed it. I thought episode 1 was really
- 35:32well done. It got me to click on episode 2
- 35:35and I'm so glad that I did because I really like Andy
- 35:37Reid's story. You're a big part of it.
- 35:41It's well done, Mitch. I'm glad that I'm glad I'm
- 35:43investing the time in it. When did it start kind of take
- 35:46us behind the scenes? I mean, I know it's a whole look
- 35:48back at last year, but when did you guys actually sit down and
- 35:52you know, do your parts etcetera?
- 35:55My part was done in three, actually 4 separate Times Now.
- 36:02The one you're mainly seeing in these first two episodes was
- 36:07done in roughly early to mid-october, but then there are
- 36:13more to come as the episodes go on.
- 36:17They were going to, they started following us around, even at
- 36:19training camp. What is what I've been
- 36:23encouraged by it, Ken, is they're telling the story, the
- 36:27stories that haven't been told. For example, Andy Reid, to get
- 36:31inside of Andy Reid a little bit.
- 36:33He's such a remarkable human being, not just a great coach.
- 36:37And people just either have not chosen to do it or don't have
- 36:41the long form to do it, but they've done it.
- 36:44So they're getting some of the stories in this series that I'm
- 36:48glad are getting accentuated because the world needs to see
- 36:52him. And again, you can doubt the
- 36:53Chiefs, just like the Chiefs disrespect the Chiefs.
- 36:56But you, you've really got to admire the Chiefs.
- 37:00And as you watch these episodes, it only gets better, my friend.
- 37:03I'm not trying to sell it, but there's so many stories that
- 37:07will captivate you. No, I'm going to get to the end
- 37:09and and one just real quick because this blows me away.
- 37:13The underground area or whatever that is that they've stored the
- 37:17history of the Kansas City Chiefs going back to when they
- 37:21were in Dallas and all of those files in the cat that I don't
- 37:25know if he lives down there. He looks like he does.
- 37:27This fascinates me, Mitch. I mean, I would, I would love to
- 37:31get, I know you can't, but wow. When they take, you know, when
- 37:35they take the Mount Rushmore, as you call it, on your Week 1 down
- 37:39there and they start pulling that.
- 37:41That just amazed me, Mitch. Remarkable.
- 37:46And there's a lot of caves under Kansas City.
- 37:48I had no idea there's a labyrinth of caves underneath
- 37:52the city, but those in particular are the property of
- 37:56the hunts. They've been there for a long,
- 37:57long time. A lot more.
- 37:59Does look like the Indiana Jones guy a little bit.
- 38:03You know, Mr. Jones, you have some things that I've vamped,
- 38:07but that is a remarkable scene. So well done.
- 38:10The four of those guys walking down in this huge space of caves
- 38:14and they're all going, man, expect some villain to jump out,
- 38:19you know, take us on and and Andy's just like, where am I at?
- 38:22What's going on here? So, yeah, it's remarkable.
- 38:25But that's where that's where everything's stored to preserve
- 38:28it. Josh Simmons the number one pick
- 38:31and what about a top 10 or if it wasn't for the injury?
- 38:34Well, he's healthy, he's looking good.
- 38:35You guys got another good one there that for every reason drop
- 38:38down those draft boards. The Chiefs look in good shape
- 38:40here, Mitch. The three of us have mentioned
- 38:43this trend. If you're going to try to stay
- 38:45at the top in the NFL over a long period of time, you've got
- 38:49to find steals in the draft or you've got to find the guy.
- 38:53That Trey Smith, we get him in the sixth round.
- 38:56A redraft has him in the first. Simmons would have been a top
- 38:59seven pick had he not got hurt hurt at Ohio State and he would
- 39:05have been the top tackle taken. Now I had a chance to talk to
- 39:08him. This is music to the ears of an
- 39:10online coach or a head coach or anybody that likes a football
- 39:14team to hear their left tackle embassy protector say these
- 39:19words. I'd say technique just just just
- 39:22because everything here is hits a little faster to get up here a
- 39:25little faster. The hands from D lineman are a
- 39:27lot faster. So making sure I'm very accurate
- 39:30with my punches, keeping low body, like good body, body
- 39:34posture and like a pass, you know, stuff like that.
- 39:35So. We're talking about working with
- 39:37the other guys. I noticed today in OLD all it
- 39:39was 2 on 2, so some of that's working in concert.
- 39:42How much of that are you growing into?
- 39:45A lot. So at the NFL they're going to
- 39:47have different blisses that I probably haven't seen in
- 39:49college. So like to go back.
- 39:51It's going to all be about technique and communication and
- 39:54also studying tape and watching like what they'll do out of a
- 39:56certain front, so. That is music to the ears of
- 40:01someone who has a young offensive lineman go technique.
- 40:04I've got to be a technician. So he is dove into the playbook,
- 40:09He's dove into the technique, he's dove into being physical.
- 40:12We have such great college wrestling programs in the state
- 40:15of Iowa. Well, offensive line in the
- 40:17National Football League is roughly wrestling.
- 40:21And you've got to master footwork, hand placement, move,
- 40:26move, counter, move, counter punch.
- 40:27This kid is on his way and. It's been exciting to see it.
- 40:31Mitch, I wish I had more time. I I just had to talk to you
- 40:33about the Kingdom. I know that somewhere in Johnson
- 40:36they've got those caves and that Donaldson's are down there and
- 40:39they're coming up with something.
- 40:41That's how I envisioned it. Mitch, let's talk about the
- 40:43music's playing brother. If you look really closely, go
- 40:45back, look really closely, you'll see Matt Donaldson on a
- 40:48golf cart way back there. The Mount Rushmore guys, you'll
- 40:52see him cross. You got to look at it real
- 40:53quick. But he'll crossover because
- 40:55they're working on it. The next one, they had to move
- 40:58it out of Johnston. Too many people were trying to
- 41:00break in. They moved into the caves in
- 41:02Kansas City. Good stuff, brother, we'll talk
- 41:04to you tomorrow. Mitch holds his voice.
- 41:05To the Chiefs, Papa John's sponsors.
- 41:06Thank you. Mitch, talk to you more.
- 41:08Hour 2 is next.
