- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time, a wave original.
- 0:10Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:12Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:16Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:18Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:21Speaker 1: a hater. It is Time Machine Tuesday. Spencer Hall joins
- 0:26Speaker 1: us from Channel 6. What is going on, my man?
- 0:29Speaker 2: You ready to talk about something big, something fast? You're
- 0:35Speaker 2: going to talk about something that you didn't have to
- 0:37Speaker 2: be smart in order to work with. I would love
- 0:40Speaker 2: to talk about Cam Newton today, if you would like to.
- 0:44Speaker 1: We're going to do that. Before we do, I have
- 0:46Speaker 1: to say, this is the second time I've seen Spencer's
- 0:48Speaker 1: haircut as Spencer and I hung out for a moment
- 0:50Speaker 1: in Atlanta. And I love how Spencer maintains his fundamental
- 0:54Speaker 1: truth while also hugging up on just enough Atlanta.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Just listen, this I didn't ask for. You realize this
- 1:01Speaker 2: just happens. This is how they do it. If you
- 1:05Speaker 2: get your haircut inside the perimeter, they're like, okay, starting here.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Everything else is optional, but they're going to give you
- 1:13Speaker 2: a little tight on the side, a little long on
- 1:14Speaker 2: the top.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Now, have you gone all the way to go into
- 1:17Speaker 1: the black people barbershop yet or have the white dudes
- 1:19Speaker 1: just got on board?
- 1:20Speaker 2: I have done that when my regular guy, who I'm
- 1:23Speaker 2: in a committed relationship with a barber and have been
- 1:26Speaker 2: for about six years. But before that hit or miss,
- 1:31Speaker 2: hit or miss all the time. And one of those
- 1:34Speaker 2: hits was going to a black barber. And do you
- 1:36Speaker 2: know what it looked like? This. That's it. Same haircut.
- 1:40Speaker 2: They'll just give you the same cut. No flinching. No nothing.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Just go. Honestly, the reason I didn't go back is
- 1:46Speaker 2: because I was like, am I invading a space? Because
- 1:51Speaker 2: once is utility, right? Once it's like, shit, I need
- 1:53Speaker 2: my haircut. And then twice you go, I don't know.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Is this, am I taking up space in a place
- 2:00Speaker 2: where I shouldn't?
- 2:01Speaker 1: Not only are you welcome, I'll also make this point
- 2:04Speaker 1: that if you are a white person willing to go
- 2:06Speaker 1: to a black barbershop, just throwing it out there, you
- 2:08Speaker 1: are not the most conservative person in the room. You
- 2:11Speaker 1: may not realize that until after a while, but if
- 2:14Speaker 1: you are willing to set foot, you are not the
- 2:16Speaker 1: most conservative person in the room.
- 2:19Speaker 2: I think that is 100% true. I will also state this.
- 2:23Speaker 2: I am now, I live near a very conservative barbershop
- 2:27Speaker 2: that I do not patronize. And, um, occasionally I will
- 2:31Speaker 2: see a person of color coming out of there. And
- 2:33Speaker 2: I'm just, every time I see it, I go, I
- 2:35Speaker 2: want that story. I want to know who you're going
- 2:37Speaker 2: to and how this happened. Well, the real question is,
- 2:39Speaker 2: did they come out with or without a haircut? Cause
- 2:42Speaker 2: they good to be like, well, well, we'll cut that gray.
- 2:45Speaker 2: That's their line.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Well, well, well, no, do with that.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Oh, these are, no, these are paying customers. These are
- 2:50Speaker 2: people who are using. So I want to know the story.
- 2:53Speaker 2: I want to know how it happened. I do.
- 2:55Speaker 3: I do.
- 2:56Speaker 1: But, Story of all stories. This week on Time Machine Tuesday,
- 2:59Speaker 1: we do wish to talk about the 2010 college football season,
- 3:03Speaker 1: which ends 15 years ago now, because you know these
- 3:06Speaker 1: things wrap over and get you into 2011. Now, first
- 3:08Speaker 1: Time Machine Tuesday, we talked about the Vince Young game
- 3:13Speaker 1: at Rose Bowl. Five years later, and you may think
- 3:16Speaker 1: that Vince Young is the greatest college football quarterback of
- 3:18Speaker 1: all time. There's an argument for it, okay? But we
- 3:21Speaker 1: fast forward five years, and If you don't think Cam
- 3:25Speaker 1: Newton was the best college football quarterback of all time,
- 3:27Speaker 1: and I mean just quarterback, because I think this is
- 3:29Speaker 1: important to note. There's a difference between a player and
- 3:32Speaker 1: a career, right? Like, I have been watching on the
- 3:35Speaker 1: internet where there has been a discussion about whether or
- 3:37Speaker 1: not Fred Taylor is a pro football Hall of Famer.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Where do you land on that, by the way?
- 3:43Speaker 1: This is where I land. The distinction is very important.
- 3:46Speaker 1: I believe that Fred Taylor was a Hall of Fame
- 3:48Speaker 1: talent and Hall of Fame player who did not have
- 3:50Speaker 1: a Hall of Fame career.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Mm-hmm. Right. Right.
- 3:54Speaker 1: You might make an argument that other quarterbacks have had
- 3:57Speaker 1: better careers than Cam Newton. Tim Tebow, who's a big
- 4:01Speaker 1: part of the story that we'll get back to later,
- 4:03Speaker 1: is somebody that fits such an example. Tommy Frazier, another
- 4:07Speaker 1: guy that we may put in and fits under this example. However,
- 4:11Speaker 1: for my money, the greatest college football season any individual
- 4:15Speaker 1: has ever had is Cam Newton. Twenty ten. Part of
- 4:19Speaker 1: the intrigue of that season, and I don't even think
- 4:22Speaker 1: we fully understood it at the beginning of that year,
- 4:25Speaker 1: but how you get to 2010 from Cam Newton, starting
- 4:30Speaker 1: it at Westlake High School, getting to Florida in 2017,
- 4:35Speaker 1: This is a wild story when you stop and think
- 4:37Speaker 1: about this, okay? So Cam was a five-star recruit quarterback
- 4:41Speaker 1: coming out of Atlanta. He goes to Florida. Now, Urban
- 4:45Speaker 1: Meyer is, I'm getting a quarterback every year, dog, the
- 4:49Speaker 1: best one that I possibly can, right? And then they'll
- 4:52Speaker 1: duke it out. We'll figure out who the starter is
- 4:54Speaker 1: going to be. And if you want to leave, okay,
- 4:56Speaker 1: generally speaking, we'll help you do that. All right, 2006,
- 4:59Speaker 1: they got Tim Tebow in. Tim Tebow was the backup
- 5:01Speaker 1: quarterback and short yardage pullback, basically on a national championship
- 5:06Speaker 1: team in 2006, 2007. He's a starting quarterback. Cam is
- 5:11Speaker 1: a true freshman. Now people will tell you that Tim
- 5:14Speaker 1: Tebow was better than Cam Newton for the whole stretch
- 5:17Speaker 1: of the time at Florida. You just, if you say so, buddy,
- 5:20Speaker 1: I got other people, people on the cam side will
- 5:22Speaker 1: tell you otherwise, right? There's also like little weird details.
- 5:25Speaker 1: I believe they were roommates when they first got there.
- 5:28Speaker 1: And so that becomes, you know, that's the weird college
- 5:30Speaker 1: football coach thing to do. Make Major Applewhite and Chris
- 5:33Speaker 1: Sims be roommates, right? Make Tim Tebow and Cam Newton
- 5:36Speaker 1: be roommates.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Wow. I mean, I can't imagine any reason there'd ever
- 5:39Speaker 1: be any tension between those guys under those circumstances.
- 5:43Speaker 2: No, no, never.
- 5:44Speaker 1: But this thing happened in 2007. It's very simple. Tim
- 5:48Speaker 1: Tebow won the Heisman Trophy and put up a stat
- 5:51Speaker 1: line that hadn't been seen, which was 20 touchdown passes
- 5:55Speaker 1: and 20 rushing touchdowns. At this point, Gainesville, Florida belongs
- 6:00Speaker 1: to him. It was already kind of sort of his
- 6:02Speaker 1: in 2006 as it stood, but it was his job
- 6:06Speaker 1: at that point for however long he wanted to have it,
- 6:09Speaker 1: all right? Next season is 2008. Florida again wins a
- 6:13Speaker 1: national championship, but also of note, and you correct me anywhere,
- 6:18Speaker 1: I may be getting some of these small details wrong,
- 6:20Speaker 1: but John Brantley, who was a legacy recruit of sorts,
- 6:24Speaker 1: who had been a five-star recruit, finished as a four-star recruit,
- 6:27Speaker 1: originally committed to Texas, He went to Florida because, again,
- 6:31Speaker 1: Urban Meyer's getting a quarterback every year he possibly can
- 6:33Speaker 1: get one. Tebow is the starter. Newton is the backup.
- 6:37Speaker 1: John Bradley's below him. And Cam, you know, got caught
- 6:42Speaker 1: with a stolen laptop or there was a stolen laptop
- 6:44Speaker 1: found near him with reason to believe that he has
- 6:47Speaker 1: stolen it. I believe the picture had property of Cam
- 6:50Speaker 1: Newton whited out.
- 6:51Speaker 2: And white out.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Yeah, and white out on it because, I mean, he
- 6:55Speaker 1: might as well have licked it like it was a muffin.
- 6:57Speaker 1: And just said that this now belongs to me.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Okay.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Cam also has an ankle injury for much of that year.
- 7:03Speaker 1: The key detail here, what I'm going for is by
- 7:07Speaker 1: the time that year was over, John Brantley was above
- 7:11Speaker 1: camp who you've never heard of. John Brantley was the
- 7:13Speaker 1: head of Cam Newton on the depth chart. And it
- 7:15Speaker 1: was made pretty clear that in 2009, John Brantley is
- 7:20Speaker 1: going to be the starting quarterback here. There was also
- 7:22Speaker 1: some cheating on test allegations, a lot of this.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Stuff, right? Right.
- 7:25Speaker 1: 2009, John Brantley is going to be the starting quarterback
- 7:28Speaker 1: at Florida. And you, Cam Newton, need to find somewhere
- 7:31Speaker 1: else to go. And there was a great concerted effort
- 7:34Speaker 1: to find a place for him to go as far
- 7:38Speaker 1: from the SEC as humanly possible because nobody wanted that
- 7:44Speaker 1: big motherfucker coming back.
- 7:47Speaker 2: His potential was not unquestioned. And the reasons for John
- 7:52Speaker 2: Brantley rising above him on the depth chart were, if
- 7:55Speaker 2: I recall correctly, and I think I do, very stupid.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Urban Meyer was terrified, I believe, of not recruiting a legacy.
- 8:04Speaker 2: That was what Urban Meyer said at the time, that
- 8:07Speaker 2: he was very worried about missing up that kind of
- 8:09Speaker 2: legacy pick because Brantley's father was a quarterback at Florida
- 8:15Speaker 2: and Brantley's well-respected in the Florida community. And Urban Meyer
- 8:19Speaker 2: has said that that was something he cared about. I
- 8:22Speaker 2: would also tell you this. Does that seem plausible? Or
- 8:28Speaker 2: is it more likely the kind of thing you would
- 8:30Speaker 2: say if you had absolutely mismanaged the greatest quarterback season
- 8:37Speaker 2: provider in history? Yes. I didn't say greatest quarterback in history.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Let's not put our foot in that bucket. Yes. What
- 8:43Speaker 2: greatest single season in terms of impact? You messed that up. Yes,
- 8:49Speaker 2: he did. He messed that up. That's it. That's not
- 8:53Speaker 2: even a risky take. That's a fact. You could have
- 8:56Speaker 2: had that. That could have been the next thing. And instead,
- 9:00Speaker 2: what you got helped destroy that dynasty. So I would
- 9:05Speaker 2: probably be looking for other more, you know, I'd be
- 9:09Speaker 2: looking for some rationale. I'd be at the rationale shop
- 9:11Speaker 2: looking around and shopping. So that's the kind of thing
- 9:15Speaker 2: I think you say when you know that you've screwed up.
- 9:17Speaker 2: And by the way, now compare that to what you
- 9:19Speaker 2: said next, which is now we need this gentleman as
- 9:21Speaker 2: far away from the SEC as possible.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Why?
- 9:25Speaker 2: Why? I'm the goose. I'm the goose in the meme
- 9:29Speaker 2: just barking.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Like, why?
- 9:30Speaker 2: Why do you need him far away? For the same
- 9:33Speaker 2: reason you need clearance between you and a nuke. Yes.
- 9:36Speaker 3: Right?
- 9:36Speaker 2: When it goes off, it's going to blow up everything
- 9:38Speaker 2: around it, which it did. Right.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Like they didn't. He wasn't going to go to Heinz
- 9:43Speaker 1: Community College in Mississippi, right? Like any of those. No, no, no, no, no.
- 9:48Speaker 1: So Cam goes to Blinn College in Brenham, Texas, a
- 9:51Speaker 1: school with which I'm very familiar with.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Kills it. Kills it.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Kills it. Kills it. It's like it's great it makes
- 9:59Speaker 1: no the idea first of all blend is one of
- 10:01Speaker 1: those schools that just got good at a bunch of
- 10:03Speaker 1: stuff right like oh didn't have the act score to
- 10:06Speaker 1: get into texas texas and then with the university of
- 10:08Speaker 1: houston uh come down here oh you're really fast we
- 10:11Speaker 1: have a nationally reputed track program here uh michael bishop
- 10:15Speaker 1: legendary kansas state quarterback he did his time at blend
- 10:18Speaker 1: right like it like this was this was the place
- 10:20Speaker 1: that you went and so cam goes there he doesn't
- 10:23Speaker 1: want to be there everybody understands i'm here for a
- 10:26Speaker 1: good time not a long time and it goes pretty
- 10:30Speaker 1: much exactly as you would expect for it to go
- 10:33Speaker 1: when you drop cam newton or by the way cam
- 10:35Speaker 1: newton who is now in year three of eligibility so
- 10:38Speaker 1: this isn't like 18 year old cam newton this is
- 10:41Speaker 1: 20 going on 21 year old cam newton going to
- 10:43Speaker 1: a junior college a place where he's only supposed to
- 10:45Speaker 1: be like two year guys he's in year three and
- 10:47Speaker 1: he's playing against those dudes come on bro.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Go look at photos of cam playing at blin there
- 10:53Speaker 2: are a few and they look a lot like jonathan
- 10:56Speaker 2: hogden that was exactly what i was gonna say yeah
- 10:59Speaker 2: playing against all of those like private school boys in
- 11:01Speaker 2: dc and you see him on the field and he
- 11:04Speaker 2: looks like a dad And then it looks like there's
- 11:06Speaker 2: a toddler. And the toddler is a normal-sized person. That's
- 11:08Speaker 2: what Cam Newton looks like on the field at Blinn.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Yeah, it was nuts.
- 11:11Speaker 2: It was nuts.
- 11:12Speaker 1: And so, like I say, it goes as expected. And again,
- 11:16Speaker 1: my understanding has always been people were very concerned about
- 11:20Speaker 1: him going way far away, right? Anyway, he's the number
- 11:26Speaker 1: one Juco recruit in America. And everybody named Mama is
- 11:29Speaker 1: trying to get their hands on him and to recruit.
- 11:31Speaker 1: I know Bob Stoops made an offer at Oklahoma. for
- 11:34Speaker 1: what mattered to me at that time. Thank God that
- 11:39Speaker 1: never came to be. Lane Kiffin, who when he got
- 11:42Speaker 1: to Tennessee, told Todd Boyd, no, your scholarship offer is
- 11:46Speaker 1: no good here. I've got Matt Sims on deck, right?
- 11:51Speaker 1: He made an offer. for Cam Newton. Like this is
- 11:54Speaker 1: Lane Kiffin before Jalen Hurts and before Blake Sims brought
- 11:57Speaker 1: in his outlook on how to play football, right?
- 11:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:59Speaker 1: This is Lane Kiffin looking for standard dropback quarterback.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Nope.
- 12:03Speaker 1: He was like, yo, let me get a piece of
- 12:04Speaker 1: this Mississippi state. They made the hard play for Cam Newton.
- 12:09Speaker 1: He wound up going to Auburn. Now I talked to
- 12:11Speaker 1: people on the cam side of things around the time
- 12:13Speaker 1: this was going on. And the point they made was
- 12:15Speaker 1: you got to remember Auburn's like an hour and a
- 12:16Speaker 1: half from Southwest Atlanta. He spent a lot of time
- 12:19Speaker 1: at different points going up there for the weekend, hanging out.
- 12:22Speaker 1: There were logical reasons that he would wind up going
- 12:27Speaker 1: to Auburn. That is still the worst nightmare that Urban
- 12:30Speaker 1: Meyer could have ever had. I guess it only could
- 12:33Speaker 1: have been worse if he went to Georgia, but Georgia
- 12:35Speaker 1: wouldn't get a quarterback that looked like that.
- 12:38Speaker 2: That's a whole other episode. Yes, it is. Also, by
- 12:46Speaker 2: the way, another Georgia episode we should do is We
- 12:48Speaker 2: should do, oh, yeah, they're only going to start a
- 12:51Speaker 2: white quarterback at Georgia. And somebody's going to go, DJ Shockley.
- 12:54Speaker 2: And I'll go, true. Stetson Bennett. Yes. Is a confounder there.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Stetson Bennett started more games than DJ Shockley did. That's
- 13:05Speaker 1: the point.
- 13:06Speaker 2: Also, Stetson Bennett, if you watched him play, you would go, huh. Huh. Interesting.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Not the style I expected to see. Stetson Bennett, the
- 13:17Speaker 2: fourth from Georgia.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Stetson Bennett, another Juco all-star in the history of the Southeast.
- 13:23Speaker 1: There's so much going on with that. But Cam winds
- 13:26Speaker 1: up back. He's at Auburn. Gus Malzahn is the offensive
- 13:29Speaker 1: coordinator who himself has had this fascinating journey. And it's
- 13:33Speaker 1: funny because remember, the problem he had at Arkansas was
- 13:36Speaker 1: everybody wanted Mitch Mustaine to air it out. And I
- 13:40Speaker 1: think Houston Nuggets a bad rap for this, for saying...
- 13:43Speaker 1: I got three NFL running backs back here, baby. We're
- 13:46Speaker 1: going to give them the ball a lot. But it
- 13:49Speaker 1: costs Malzahn. I mean, he left, basically. He went to Tulsa,
- 13:52Speaker 1: became the offensive coordinator. And then he winds up at Auburn.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Their head coach is Gene Chizik. And we'll talk about
- 13:59Speaker 1: that guy in a little bit later as this all goes.
- 14:03Speaker 1: What you need to understand is that Auburn football team,
- 14:06Speaker 1: and we didn't realize it at the time, was Cam Newton,
- 14:11Speaker 1: Nick Fairley, That's it.
- 14:14Speaker 2: And some guys.
- 14:17Speaker 3: Guys.
- 14:17Speaker 2: And some guys. Introducing guys. Some dudes.
- 14:23Speaker 1: For all the talk of everything about the SEC, and
- 14:26Speaker 1: generally speaking, the SEC possesses a depth of talent that
- 14:29Speaker 1: you're not going to find other places. SEC schools, particularly
- 14:33Speaker 1: the top half of the SEC, and we would say
- 14:34Speaker 1: that Auburn is a top half of the SEC school, right?
- 14:38Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 14:39Speaker 1: They've got guys. Um... they're going to send a bunch
- 14:42Speaker 1: of dudes to the NFL. What we did not know
- 14:46Speaker 1: at the beginning of that year was that team would
- 14:49Speaker 1: send two guys, at least to the draft. Maybe some
- 14:53Speaker 1: other guys got in, some practice squad action, some special teams,
- 14:56Speaker 1: little situation. They had two guys get drafted off that
- 14:59Speaker 1: whole team. This story is going to end with them
- 15:02Speaker 1: winning a national championship with two guys who got drafted.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Not just two guys who got drafted in 2011. Two
- 15:11Speaker 1: guys off the whole goddamn team heard their names called
- 15:15Speaker 1: by an NFL employee.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Yeah. Auburn fans, sit down. You can't hear this question.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Everyone else, come forward. Or look at your screen. If
- 15:24Speaker 2: you're watching YouTube, look into my eyes. Tell me honestly,
- 15:27Speaker 2: do you remember the name of a wide receiver on
- 15:28Speaker 2: that offense? Wide receiver. Didn't say tight end. I'm even
- 15:32Speaker 2: going to take him out of it. Okay. You don't
- 15:35Speaker 2: remember a name of a wide receiver on that team.
- 15:37Speaker 1: I only remember one.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Who do you remember?
- 15:42Speaker 1: And it's only because his name was somewhat distinct. I
- 15:44Speaker 1: believe it was Ontario McCallop.
- 15:47Speaker 2: It was a running back. Ontario McCallop.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Oh, sorry.
- 15:50Speaker 2: My bad. So we're all in the same boat. Because
- 15:56Speaker 2: if you had asked me at 8.45 this morning when
- 15:58Speaker 2: I was extensively reviewing things in my car for this show,
- 16:04Speaker 2: I would not have remembered the name of a wide receiver.
- 16:06Speaker 2: Darvin Ham. I'm sorry, Darvin Adams. Not Darvin Adams. Darvin
- 16:09Speaker 2: Adams and, you know, guys like Terrell Zachary. They didn't
- 16:15Speaker 2: go to the league.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Buddy, I don't think I ever knew Darvin Adams' name,
- 16:18Speaker 1: and now that I'm looking at it, they do have
- 16:20Speaker 1: a wide receiver whose name I remember, but not from
- 16:23Speaker 1: playing wide receiver. Wasn't Cody Burns a quarterback?
- 16:27Speaker 2: Became a quarterback, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Additionally, Philip Lutzenkirchen. Do
- 16:32Speaker 2: not forget Lutze. Lutze, RIP. He's no longer with us,
- 16:35Speaker 2: but Philip Lutzenkirchen. was their big red zone threat. The
- 16:39Speaker 2: fact that we're having this conversation means that the average
- 16:42Speaker 2: college football fan watching this is like, oh yeah, no idea.
- 16:45Speaker 2: That team was Cam and a dude who I remember
- 16:49Speaker 2: for rolling over an Oregon defender. That's it. Like you
- 16:51Speaker 2: might remember Michael Dyer.
- 16:53Speaker 3: Right.
- 16:53Speaker 1: They like offensive line. This is the thing we talk about.
- 16:56Speaker 1: The SEC wins at the line of scrimmage. They didn't
- 16:59Speaker 1: even really have those guys. This was one dude. And
- 17:05Speaker 1: I understand why, What happened with Cam was not immediately
- 17:09Speaker 1: you jump into the season and all hell breaks loose.
- 17:12Speaker 1: It wasn't that, right? Like this was, when you look
- 17:15Speaker 1: at how they started that season, I think the first game,
- 17:18Speaker 1: you know, they went to play Arkansas State. Okay, like
- 17:20Speaker 1: we understand that one. I remember it was like a
- 17:23Speaker 1: real close game against Mississippi State. um they played an
- 17:27Speaker 1: overtime game against Clemson and this is at the beginning
- 17:30Speaker 1: of the Davo era which was who boy that was
- 17:32Speaker 1: a hoot um but they were just kind of like
- 17:35Speaker 1: they were putting up decent numbers but they weren't like
- 17:37Speaker 1: they scored 17 points against Mississippi State they scored 27
- 17:40Speaker 1: points in overtime against Clemson they did put up 35
- 17:43Speaker 1: against a pretty decent South Carolina team but we didn't
- 17:47Speaker 1: know what this was this kept going and their defense
- 17:50Speaker 1: was not good right they were giving up a lot
- 17:53Speaker 1: of yards they played a game against Arkansas. That was a,
- 17:58Speaker 1: a basketball game. It was a basketball game. It was
- 18:01Speaker 1: an incredible game to watch on television. And as I recall,
- 18:04Speaker 1: I feel like it was right around like the time change.
- 18:07Speaker 1: So the game ended and it was dark and it
- 18:09Speaker 1: was like 65 to 43. That is correct. And it
- 18:13Speaker 1: was just up and down the field, up and down
- 18:16Speaker 1: the field, up and down the field. And again, we
- 18:17Speaker 1: were talking about a guy with no NFL lineman, no
- 18:20Speaker 1: NFL players to throw the ball to. And he scored
- 18:22Speaker 1: 65 points.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Yeah. By the way, an offensive line known more for
- 18:27Speaker 2: breaking knees than anything else. If you want to know,
- 18:33Speaker 2: let's just be very real here. What did the rest
- 18:36Speaker 2: of those guys on that Auburn team do on defense
- 18:39Speaker 2: and offense? Helmet to helmet contact and a lot of
- 18:44Speaker 2: roll-ups and chop blocks. They were very good at being,
- 18:49Speaker 2: and I say this, complimentary. Hashtag complimentary. That's a dirty team.
- 18:54Speaker 2: You did not have fun All of those guys on
- 18:57Speaker 2: the ground, Cam shook a few of them loose, to
- 19:00Speaker 2: be fair. A lot of them are lying on the
- 19:02Speaker 2: ground because they go, this is pre-NIL and my ACL
- 19:06Speaker 2: are the letters I care about right now. I'm going
- 19:08Speaker 2: to make a business decision. I'm going to lie down
- 19:11Speaker 2: before this dude chop blocks me.
- 19:13Speaker 1: Yeah, and look, that Arkansas team was good.
- 19:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:17Speaker 1: Like, I mean, that is the, if you know the
- 19:19Speaker 1: infamous Bobby Petrino picture with the Sugar Bowl hat, if
- 19:22Speaker 1: I'm not mistaken, this is the team that went to
- 19:25Speaker 1: the Sugar Bowl, right? In that game, by the way,
- 19:28Speaker 1: Cam Newton, 10 for 14 for 140 yards and one touchdown,
- 19:33Speaker 1: 25 for 188 on the ground for three touchdowns because
- 19:38Speaker 1: it was the Bel Air Academy offense. Like the teams
- 19:41Speaker 1: can buy, isn't the SEC, vaunted SEC defense, there's a
- 19:44Speaker 1: thousand yards of total offense. But it was also, if
- 19:48Speaker 1: I recall the CBS, game of that week and that
- 19:52Speaker 1: was the game where everybody saw what cam newton was
- 19:55Speaker 1: the power of national television still matters johnny manziel owes
- 19:59Speaker 1: everything to beating alabama on national television in the cbs
- 20:03Speaker 1: game in 2012 the week after alabama played lsu That's
- 20:06Speaker 1: what we had here. It was the national TV window.
- 20:09Speaker 1: And one man looked like nothing we had ever seen.
- 20:14Speaker 2: So I'm going to take you to the 23rd, October 23rd, 2010,
- 20:20Speaker 2: because at this point he's getting national renown, sort of
- 20:23Speaker 2: getting prominent, sort of getting the notion of, okay, this
- 20:26Speaker 2: is a person that you should watch and you should,
- 20:29Speaker 2: you know, you should at least stop by for a
- 20:30Speaker 2: quarter or two, if you're going to watch a college
- 20:32Speaker 2: football game. And again, I got a friend who has
- 20:36Speaker 2: some tickets, so I'm going to drive down to Auburn.
- 20:38Speaker 2: They haven't been to a game in Auburn in a while.
- 20:39Speaker 2: They're going to be playing LSU. That's a good time. Yes.
- 20:41Speaker 2: So I end up in the corner of the end
- 20:42Speaker 2: zone for this game against LSU. And there is a run.
- 20:46Speaker 2: They do beat LSU, and they do it on the
- 20:48Speaker 2: back of one Cam Newton touchdown run, which has T-shirts
- 20:53Speaker 2: and posters you can buy.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Ryan was there.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Ryan was there.
- 20:57Speaker 1: Right, right, right, right. Ryan was the LSU student, and Ryan,
- 21:00Speaker 1: I believe, was in the stadium at the game.
- 21:02Speaker 2: He might have been next to me and the LSU
- 21:05Speaker 2: mom I was next to, who was a very nice lady,
- 21:08Speaker 2: who whenever Auburn had the ball, would say things like,
- 21:11Speaker 2: hit him in the knees! I got to tell you,
- 21:15Speaker 2: from the first quarter on, once Cam started getting loose
- 21:17Speaker 2: against them, it was, kill him! Kill that man! That's
- 21:22Speaker 2: the only... There's a great compliment that I have to
- 21:26Speaker 2: a player when I don't know what to do with them,
- 21:28Speaker 2: where I'm like, okay, you should probably just hit him
- 21:30Speaker 2: with a car. Just drive a car out of the field.
- 21:32Speaker 2: and hit them, and that's the only way that you're
- 21:34Speaker 2: going to get them out of the game. And on
- 21:36Speaker 2: that 49-yard run, what you need to know is that
- 21:38Speaker 2: the sun is going down. It is going down, and
- 21:41Speaker 2: it is shining at that point directly onto the field.
- 21:44Speaker 2: So if you're watching Cam take this run, he's kind
- 21:47Speaker 2: of running into the sun. So you can't really see
- 21:49Speaker 2: where he is, but he's so big. You know, typically
- 21:52Speaker 2: you lose people in the sun, and this is what
- 21:54Speaker 2: I remember. I remember the screams of LSU fans behind me,
- 21:57Speaker 2: and the kind of screams were like, if you watch
- 22:00Speaker 2: somebody jump off a building, the kind of like, ah.
- 22:03Speaker 1: I can't do anything, right?
- 22:04Speaker 2: The futility and horror of not being able to stop
- 22:07Speaker 2: what you're seeing. That's what's happening behind me. But if
- 22:09Speaker 2: you look forward, Cam is so big that he's actually
- 22:12Speaker 2: making his own shadow. Like typically it's so bright, you
- 22:14Speaker 2: can't even see through it, right? You just kind of
- 22:16Speaker 2: see motion. Cam is so goddamn big when he's running
- 22:20Speaker 2: that occasionally you just see this like enormous silhouette of somebody.
- 22:25Speaker 2: And I remember seeing that. And I remember seeing Patrick
- 22:27Speaker 2: Peterson just kind of go, across it like eclipsed like
- 22:31Speaker 2: he just missed him like i don't know how it
- 22:33Speaker 2: happened there are nfl draft picks on that lsu defense
- 22:36Speaker 2: a good lsu defense with great talent i think we
- 22:39Speaker 2: hear a lot out of lsu right oh yeah good
- 22:42Speaker 2: defense great talent later went on to have hall of
- 22:44Speaker 2: fame careers how were they in college yeah they're fine
- 22:48Speaker 2: they're good that defense and watching cam take this run
- 22:52Speaker 2: i don't know if people can understand it's the longest
- 22:53Speaker 2: play i've ever watched in person it took forever it's
- 22:56Speaker 2: like 13 seconds.
- 22:58Speaker 1: Peterson, for my money, he's the best athlete I have
- 23:02Speaker 1: ever seen play corner.
- 23:03Speaker 2: Right?
- 23:04Speaker 1: Just like, when does it turn in speed to power?
- 23:07Speaker 1: Is that what they talk about? Like a guy that size,
- 23:09Speaker 1: the size that he was as a junior in college.
- 23:12Speaker 1: It was unreal. And Cam Newton is running away from
- 23:16Speaker 1: him in this game. Just running away. And look, they
- 23:19Speaker 1: won that game 24-17. And it's worth noting, when you
- 23:23Speaker 1: look at the stats, like I'm looking at the game
- 23:25Speaker 1: log now, There was only, there were no games. No,
- 23:29Speaker 1: one game. The national championship game is the only time
- 23:32Speaker 1: that Cam threw more than 30 passes. Only one other
- 23:35Speaker 1: game where he threw more than 25. This was high school, right?
- 23:39Speaker 1: Like Gus Malzahn is a legendary high school coach who
- 23:42Speaker 1: was only four years removed or five years removed from
- 23:45Speaker 1: coaching high school. It was, you get your biggest, best
- 23:49Speaker 1: player You make him the quarterback. And then we just
- 23:53Speaker 1: figure everything out from there. And according to that primitive formula,
- 23:59Speaker 1: they were running through the SEC. And by the way,
- 24:02Speaker 1: that game, 10 for 16 for 86 yards, which is
- 24:06Speaker 1: not really that impressive. But the 28 for 217 and
- 24:09Speaker 1: two touchdowns.
- 24:11Speaker 2: And the 49 yard run was all I needed to see.
- 24:15Speaker 2: To know that I had been wrong on everything. I
- 24:17Speaker 2: thought Cam coming out of Florida was... a dude who
- 24:21Speaker 2: was a bruising runner, but we didn't particularly, we didn't
- 24:24Speaker 2: get to see his elusiveness very much. Right. We didn't
- 24:26Speaker 2: get to see that. Like his biggest play at Florida
- 24:29Speaker 2: is in 2007 and a 59, 20 blowout of Tennessee.
- 24:32Speaker 2: He comes in and relief and destroys a man, puts
- 24:36Speaker 2: his helmet in the dude's chest and blows him up
- 24:39Speaker 2: at the goal line for a TD. I mean, you
- 24:42Speaker 2: could hear the swamp when it happened. He hits him
- 24:44Speaker 2: in the, like hits him right in the sternum. And
- 24:48Speaker 2: you just hear everyone in the swamp at once go, like,
- 24:52Speaker 2: I've heard that twice. Lawrence Wright when he hit Joey
- 24:55Speaker 2: Kent in 95 and Cam Newton when he speared this
- 25:00Speaker 2: dude right in the chest at the goal line. Like,
- 25:03Speaker 2: it was an incredible moment. But he threw high. He
- 25:07Speaker 2: never got the chance because what do you do when
- 25:09Speaker 2: you're amped up and you're young as a quarterback? You're
- 25:11Speaker 2: typically going to miss high.
- 25:12Speaker 1: And you throw off your back foot all the time.
- 25:14Speaker 3: Right.
- 25:14Speaker 2: You're throwing off your back foot. You see a guy
- 25:16Speaker 2: open and you go, oh. And typically when that happens,
- 25:19Speaker 2: the ball is going to go high. Well, we didn't
- 25:22Speaker 2: get to see that. And then you get to see
- 25:24Speaker 2: at Auburn, not only is he huge, he's elusive. He's
- 25:27Speaker 2: elusive in ways. He's elusive in that he can run
- 25:30Speaker 2: over you. Or he could simply juke you. He can
- 25:33Speaker 2: run around you. Or halfway through that LSU run, he
- 25:35Speaker 2: just hits the gas.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:37Speaker 2: He hits the gas. And Patrick Peterson– one of the
- 25:40Speaker 2: both fastest and strongest athletes I have seen is behind him.
- 25:45Speaker 2: Just gone. And that at the moment where I was like,
- 25:50Speaker 2: I was wrong about everything. Cam Newton is a player
- 25:54Speaker 2: who really is like, in terms of just watching him
- 25:58Speaker 2: and listening to that story, everything I thought was wrong.
- 26:02Speaker 2: Everything I thought about college football was generally wrong. And
- 26:05Speaker 2: I had to kind of change the way that I
- 26:07Speaker 2: viewed everything about the sport. simply because of the example
- 26:11Speaker 2: he set on and off the field in terms of
- 26:14Speaker 2: how he interacted with the machine, the apparatus.
- 26:17Speaker 1: Yes, and that's now this is where the fun stuff starts.

- 28:55Speaker 1: The smartest way to hire. All right, we are back
- 28:59Speaker 1: with Spencer Hall talking about Cam Newton 2010. We've just
- 29:02Speaker 1: got past the LSU game. They also went out there
- 29:04Speaker 1: and destroyed Ole Miss the next game. And it's worth noting, right?
- 29:11Speaker 1: The passing is getting a bit better. Auburn now looks
- 29:14Speaker 1: like a legitimate national championship contender. Like I would be
- 29:20Speaker 1: very curious to know, how we would have received this
- 29:23Speaker 1: team coming into the season. Like, there was no, hey,
- 29:28Speaker 1: these boys got a quarterback this year hype surrounding them.
- 29:30Speaker 1: They started the season at number 23, again, because they
- 29:33Speaker 1: didn't have any other dudes. But now this is turning
- 29:36Speaker 1: into a thing. They're now top, you know, they went
- 29:38Speaker 1: into the LSU game at number five they're number three
- 29:41Speaker 1: coming out of that game and I believe it is
- 29:44Speaker 1: in between homecoming against Chattanooga and the game against Georgia
- 29:48Speaker 1: we get the word that I think the way they
- 29:51Speaker 1: did it was Auburn suspended him and then immediately appealed
- 29:57Speaker 1: and thereby made him active once again so they could
- 30:00Speaker 1: conduct an internal investigation because the word on the street
- 30:03Speaker 1: was that somebody had offered to give them some money.
- 30:07Speaker 1: They didn't even have the allegation. The allegation was about
- 30:10Speaker 1: Mississippi State allegedly offering $ 180, 000 for Cam Newton to go
- 30:14Speaker 1: there in a motel room in Starkville, right? Right. But
- 30:18Speaker 1: the allegation was not at that point that Auburn had paid, right?
- 30:22Speaker 1: Or there was any receipt of money. But now it
- 30:25Speaker 1: is out there. Now the biggest story in college football
- 30:29Speaker 1: is under what was at that time as scandalous a
- 30:32Speaker 1: thing as one could propose. We are now here. We've
- 30:38Speaker 1: skipped fame and gone straight to infamy.
- 30:40Speaker 2: Yeah. And this is where everything was wrong. Everything that
- 30:45Speaker 2: you assumed about the situation was wrong. And we begin
- 30:49Speaker 2: to find that out in rapid succession. First of all,
- 30:52Speaker 2: the idea that the number two team in the nation
- 30:54Speaker 2: could lose the player who's responsible for them being number
- 30:57Speaker 2: two simply wasn't tolerable. It wasn't tolerable. Like, it just, like,
- 31:02Speaker 2: for the SEC, for anyone.
- 31:03Speaker 1: Yeah, they were like, the one thing about the SEC
- 31:05Speaker 1: is they ain't telling. They ain't giving up.
- 31:09Speaker 3: No.
- 31:10Speaker 2: And in addition to that, the idea that you could
- 31:14Speaker 2: be in a situation where you heard the number $ 180, 000.
- 31:16Speaker 2: That number is very important because I think that is
- 31:21Speaker 2: a pivotal moment, like for me and for anyone watching
- 31:23Speaker 2: the sport, when you go, okay, like at that point,
- 31:27Speaker 2: my thinking is like, okay, well, we have this stupid system,
- 31:30Speaker 2: but maybe rules, maybe rules should exist. Maybe there should
- 31:33Speaker 2: be some rules. Maybe they might be silly, but we
- 31:35Speaker 2: should all abide by them. And then you find out
- 31:37Speaker 2: that the price for Cam Newton was $ 180, 000. I will
- 31:39Speaker 2: tell you at the time, $ 180, 000. sounded ridiculous sounded absurd
- 31:46Speaker 2: it sounded like i just saw what that guy did
- 31:49Speaker 2: against lsu that would be worth it at 180 grand
- 31:53Speaker 2: it seems doubly absurd to me now that i know
- 31:56Speaker 2: the price for um i don't know miami quarterback carson
- 32:01Speaker 2: beck you tell me you pay carson beck three million
- 32:05Speaker 2: dollars or whatever what would i pay cam 10 times that.
- 32:09Speaker 2: 180 grand. Bo, at the time, you and I knew
- 32:15Speaker 2: people who made that money. Yes. At the time, we
- 32:17Speaker 2: might have been making that much money. That's an amount
- 32:19Speaker 2: of money you can understand.
- 32:21Speaker 3: Yes. Right?
- 32:22Speaker 2: Even if you've never made 180 grand a year in
- 32:24Speaker 2: your life, you know people who did. And you're like,
- 32:27Speaker 2: they're dumb. Or they're not as talented. Or they can't
- 32:31Speaker 2: do half of this shit that I do. much less
- 32:36Speaker 2: what an athlete like Cam does. 180K, that's a car
- 32:39Speaker 2: you can envision. You might not own it, right? But
- 32:42Speaker 2: you go, oh, okay, 180K. Think about the kind of
- 32:46Speaker 2: house 180K bought in 2010. Yes, it's fine. There are nicer, right?
- 32:54Speaker 2: There are nicer. 180K is not a formidable sum in
- 32:57Speaker 2: someone's retirement account. It is a tangible amount of money.
- 33:00Speaker 2: And I think at that point, that has to hit
- 33:03Speaker 2: everyone's brain sideways. I know it hit mine because you go, Hey, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
- 33:07Speaker 2: You should probably pay in the 180 K. It didn't
- 33:10Speaker 2: just seem logical. It seemed reasonable and just. Yeah.
- 33:14Speaker 1: Right. Well, I don't think it fully landed with me
- 33:18Speaker 1: and I would put a pin at the 180 K
- 33:20Speaker 1: until after a couple of weeks.
- 33:23Speaker 2: Right.
- 33:23Speaker 1: And I will tell you about a conversation I had
- 33:25Speaker 1: with a buddy of mine in line with this, because
- 33:26Speaker 1: I want to, one thing that was interesting in the
- 33:28Speaker 1: storyline of this is so I believe it was a
- 33:30Speaker 1: black man named Kenny Rogers was the guy that Mississippi
- 33:34Speaker 1: State was using as the go-between.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Yeah, him and John Bond. John Bond is also involved
- 33:39Speaker 2: in this story.
- 33:39Speaker 1: It was this weird collection of go-between characters and Cam's daddy,
- 33:43Speaker 1: who was a preacher, and meeting in these hotel rooms,
- 33:46Speaker 1: and Dan Mullen, who had seen with his own eyes
- 33:50Speaker 1: what this was because he was the offensive coordinator at
- 33:52Speaker 1: Florida before he got the job at Mississippi State. And
- 33:55Speaker 1: so he really, really, really wanted to get Cam. The thing...
- 33:59Speaker 1: my understanding was that he didn't quite realize that the
- 34:02Speaker 1: KMA really fuck with him like that.
- 34:04Speaker 3: Right.
- 34:05Speaker 1: But he knew better than anybody else.
- 34:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:08Speaker 1: What, what that was. And he was at Mississippi state, right?
- 34:12Speaker 1: This don't, this don't happen over there very often. So
- 34:15Speaker 1: he's like, okay, we're going to make this happen. The
- 34:17Speaker 1: allegation is they get together in this hotel room. I
- 34:20Speaker 1: want to say it's like the day of the egg
- 34:21Speaker 1: bowl or something like that in 2009. And somebody flat
- 34:25Speaker 1: out asked for the money. directly in front of mullen
- 34:28Speaker 1: and mullen says whoa i gotta go i cannot be
- 34:33Speaker 1: here for this portion of the discussion he he should
- 34:36Speaker 1: have stayed he should have heard every fucking word they
- 34:39Speaker 1: had to say but anyway he gets up he leaves
- 34:42Speaker 1: this is what the allegation is it's all swirling and
- 34:44Speaker 1: it's at a time where we used to lose our
- 34:46Speaker 1: minds over three four five thousand dollars this was the
- 34:49Speaker 1: biggest number anybody had ever heard okay And Alabama, which
- 34:54Speaker 1: has this interesting quirk, at least did at that time
- 34:57Speaker 1: in its schedule where they had two rivalry games and
- 35:00Speaker 1: they would play them basically back to back in the
- 35:02Speaker 1: SEC schedule. One was Georgia. One was Alabama. One would
- 35:06Speaker 1: be home. One would be road this year. It was
- 35:09Speaker 1: Georgia at home. And again, it's the SEC game window.
- 35:14Speaker 1: It's how is this going to go? And I will
- 35:16Speaker 1: never forget. That dude walked out of that tunnel like
- 35:21Speaker 1: the biggest rock star that existed, like the full understanding.
- 35:25Speaker 1: This wasn't the road, so he wasn't coming out and
- 35:28Speaker 1: everybody's here to hate me. No, this is the SEC
- 35:32Speaker 1: and you're mired in scandal and you're at home. Everybody's
- 35:36Speaker 1: here to love you. They hate us because they ain't us.
- 35:40Speaker 1: That is what this is. And he bounded from the
- 35:42Speaker 1: tunnel and went in front of the student section and
- 35:44Speaker 1: And I was like, oh, they're about to score a
- 35:46Speaker 1: gazillion points and they score 49.
- 35:50Speaker 2: And did it play in single wing? Yes. Like again,
- 35:55Speaker 2: the line from Jamel Holloway to Cam Newton schematically is
- 36:01Speaker 2: not that far. It really is not like it is
- 36:04Speaker 2: a very simple offense. It doesn't have a triple option,
- 36:09Speaker 2: but there are options built into every play. Right. And
- 36:12Speaker 2: when those don't work, The next call is Cam. And
- 36:17Speaker 2: that was enough to beat anyone. It was enough to
- 36:20Speaker 2: beat Georgia. It was enough to beat Alabama on their
- 36:23Speaker 2: own field. It's amazing how simple it was. There's also this,
- 36:28Speaker 2: and it's incredible. It's a moment when I think we
- 36:32Speaker 2: understand the value of the player as much as we
- 36:36Speaker 2: ever have because there was a time, and I don't
- 36:41Speaker 2: think this is now. If you look at the college
- 36:42Speaker 2: football playoff now, people are savvy enough that we're like, okay,
- 36:45Speaker 2: we can pay everybody. So now we can start constructing
- 36:47Speaker 2: a roster and you can have different strategies on how
- 36:50Speaker 2: to do that. Right now, if you look at the
- 36:52Speaker 2: teams that are currently in the playoff and, you know,
- 36:55Speaker 2: by the time this drops, there will be fewer of them.
- 36:59Speaker 2: We have different philosophies on how we invest our money.
- 37:02Speaker 2: You know, we have a hundred points, right? Where do
- 37:04Speaker 2: you put those character points? Miami is the closest to
- 37:07Speaker 2: the older model where they're like, Oh, we got three talented,
- 37:10Speaker 2: four talented guys. give them whatever they want and point
- 37:13Speaker 2: them as close to the enemy as possible. Right now,
- 37:15Speaker 2: what if there was a team that had two talented
- 37:17Speaker 2: guys and one of them was about 70 to 80%
- 37:19Speaker 2: of that talent? Yeah. Over invest. I've never seen a
- 37:23Speaker 2: team more invested in a single player, single player. Like
- 37:28Speaker 2: Vince Young was an extreme case of this. And Cam
- 37:31Speaker 2: is over here.
- 37:32Speaker 3: Right.
- 37:32Speaker 1: Because further over. Vince was surrounded by NFL talent.
- 37:36Speaker 2: Right.
- 37:36Speaker 1: That team was top to bottom loaded talent. This team
- 37:40Speaker 1: was not. It was this guy. And so they win
- 37:43Speaker 1: that game against Georgia. And again, I can't explain to
- 37:46Speaker 1: people how big the story was, how big the cloud
- 37:49Speaker 1: was that was around this. And they went and played
- 37:52Speaker 1: Alabama the next week. Now, Alabama, to that point, had
- 37:55Speaker 1: already lost two games that year, but they weren't getting
- 37:57Speaker 1: blown out in these games, right? They lost one of
- 38:01Speaker 1: their two losses to Jordan Jefferson and LSU.
- 38:04Speaker 2: That is correct.
- 38:05Speaker 1: They lost that one, and they lost one to Stephen Garcia.
- 38:09Speaker 1: in south carolina saban's defense hadn't quite figured out what
- 38:12Speaker 1: to do with mobile quarterbacks yet like they didn't have
- 38:14Speaker 1: to be fast they just had to be able to move.
- 38:17Speaker 2: Also also one wide receiver who was indefensible that day
- 38:21Speaker 2: who saban wanted to cover one-on-one and when spurrier saw
- 38:25Speaker 2: that he went oh neat.
- 38:26Speaker 1: Just throw that guy does that all shot jeffrey.
- 38:30Speaker 2: Throw that yeah i'll just throw that big joker there.
- 38:33Speaker 1: You go don't do the big joker we can't figure
- 38:35Speaker 1: it out yeah Alabama was up 27 to nothing at
- 38:38Speaker 1: halftime against Auburn. But before we get to that part,
- 38:42Speaker 1: the Georgia game was you are wrapped in love in
- 38:46Speaker 1: the midst of scandal. Mm-hmm. This was the iron bowl
- 38:49Speaker 1: on the road. It was Ric Flair time. It's Ric
- 38:51Speaker 1: Flair time. And they doing stuff like, you know, white
- 38:55Speaker 1: people often lose sight of how much we know about
- 38:57Speaker 1: their stuff. So they doing stuff that's really funny to
- 38:59Speaker 1: the white people that I don't think landed with Cam Newton,
- 39:02Speaker 1: like playing Steve Miller band, take the money and run
- 39:04Speaker 1: before the game. And I've seen a clip in a
- 39:06Speaker 1: documentary of Cam like, yeah, they were playing, take the
- 39:08Speaker 1: money and run. You know what the fuck they was
- 39:10Speaker 1: playing at the time. Like maybe you did. I don't
- 39:12Speaker 1: think you was really like, oh shit, that's my jam.
- 39:16Speaker 2: Hey, wait a minute.
- 39:17Speaker 1: They joking on me. I don't think that's what happened.
- 39:20Speaker 2: No, no, no. You're telling jokes for you, not for us.
- 39:23Speaker 1: They were getting their asses kicked. like they were getting
- 39:26Speaker 1: run off the field and.
- 39:28Speaker 2: This i'm gonna be the goose again and then what
- 39:32Speaker 2: and then what did a 28 point comeback in the
- 39:37Speaker 2: second half they try to call it the cam back
- 39:39Speaker 2: because everything needs a name but that don't.
- 39:41Speaker 1: Sound right it ain't it don't matter The name of
- 39:43Speaker 1: it is not the point. They walked Alabama down in
- 39:48Speaker 1: their house, and it ain't really they. He walked Alabama
- 39:51Speaker 1: down in their house, and this time, they couldn't run
- 39:54Speaker 1: the ball. They stopped him on the ground. It was
- 39:57Speaker 1: like 22 carries, 39 yards on the ground. Passing this time,
- 40:00Speaker 1: it was 13 for 20 for 216. And that Auburn
- 40:04Speaker 1: defense that could only play with a lead, this time,
- 40:07Speaker 1: they got their shit together, and they won this. That
- 40:10Speaker 1: is Again, as impressive a one-man performance as you could,
- 40:14Speaker 1: given the circumstances, given the pressure, given the stakes, like
- 40:19Speaker 1: if it's just the iron bowl with nothing else attached
- 40:22Speaker 1: to it, this is crazy enough.
- 40:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 40:25Speaker 2: I listened to this game on the radio because I
- 40:27Speaker 2: was driving back from another game and I listened to
- 40:30Speaker 2: it on the radio and the sound that the Alabama
- 40:33Speaker 2: radio crew was making by the fourth quarter. It was
- 40:37Speaker 2: the sound of somebody who was being told of a
- 40:39Speaker 2: bad diagnosis at the doctor every time they opened their mouth. Right?
- 40:45Speaker 2: It's like just increasing stages of like, okay, your test
- 40:48Speaker 2: came back positive. Oh, that's not good. Positive for what? Well,
- 40:52Speaker 2: it's cancer. Oh boy, that's real bad. Right? Then he
- 40:55Speaker 2: scores like, you know, it gets up to 21. Then
- 40:57Speaker 2: it's like, well, what stage is it? They're like stage nine.
- 41:00Speaker 2: You're like, I thought there, I thought there were only
- 41:02Speaker 2: four stages. And they're like, surprise. You're the one, you're
- 41:06Speaker 2: the first one who's had stage nine. Like that was
- 41:08Speaker 2: every single score. It just kept getting worse. It kept
- 41:12Speaker 2: getting worse. And it was, it was a little more
- 41:14Speaker 2: mythical for me because I didn't see it at first.
- 41:16Speaker 2: I've watched it since. And it's way cooler in the
- 41:19Speaker 2: radio version where I don't know how he's doing it. Right.
- 41:23Speaker 1: And it was, there was an air of defiance, obviously
- 41:26Speaker 1: to it. And the Alabama angle takes us back to
- 41:30Speaker 1: another part of the scandal that I think had kind
- 41:33Speaker 1: of been lost, which was, The two powers of the
- 41:37Speaker 1: conference at that point in time are Alabama and Florida.
- 41:42Speaker 1: And it felt like both of them had their hand
- 41:46Speaker 1: a bit in this controversy and this scandal and this
- 41:50Speaker 1: investigation coming about because now we also hear about all
- 41:54Speaker 1: the stuff that happened at Florida, the cheating on tests,
- 41:57Speaker 1: the laptop situation, right? And the question that always comes
- 42:01Speaker 1: up with any of this stuff in the SEC is,
- 42:04Speaker 1: who told because they got a real stop snitching thin
- 42:06Speaker 1: blue line situation about all of this stuff down there
- 42:09Speaker 1: like we get caught we get caught but you don't
- 42:11Speaker 1: get to tell right phil fromer skipped out on sec
- 42:14Speaker 1: media day how many times trying to avoid the subpoena
- 42:17Speaker 1: when alabama accused him of snitching.
- 42:19Speaker 2: Yeah and then got served at sec yeah they.
- 42:21Speaker 1: Got served yeah but it was just like yeah this
- 42:22Speaker 1: is this is the thing right so auburn getting this
- 42:26Speaker 1: good alabama can't abide by that florida Needs Cam to
- 42:31Speaker 1: not be so good because while this is going on,
- 42:34Speaker 1: by the way, Florida stinks and Urban Meyer's on the
- 42:36Speaker 1: way out the door. We didn't realize it at the time.
- 42:39Speaker 1: Mississippi State, they're furious, right? Because they were sure that
- 42:44Speaker 1: they were going to be able to get him and
- 42:47Speaker 1: they did not. And now it's the game against Alabama
- 42:50Speaker 1: and he just straight walks them down.
- 42:54Speaker 2: Yeah. Can I walk that out a little bit?
- 42:56Speaker 3: Sure. Okay.
- 42:57Speaker 2: Because you've covered Florida, you've covered Mississippi State, you've covered Alabama,
- 43:00Speaker 2: you've covered Auburn. Keep going. I think this is one
- 43:04Speaker 2: of the cracks in the foundation at Georgia that is
- 43:08Speaker 2: eventually one of the things that leads to the downfall
- 43:10Speaker 2: of the Mark Richt era. Yeah. Because how did you
- 43:13Speaker 2: let him leave? How did you let him get out
- 43:15Speaker 2: of here? Did you see that guy, Mark? He's too
- 43:19Speaker 2: big to miss. How did you not get him? And
- 43:21Speaker 2: then we start noticing all the other talent at quarterback
- 43:24Speaker 2: in Georgia that ends up going elsewhere.
- 43:26Speaker 1: Yep. They asked him to play tight end. Rodney Gardner
- 43:28Speaker 1: went to Westlake, told him to play tight end.
- 43:32Speaker 2: Yeah, walk that out a little bit because it's not good. Yeah, yeah.
- 43:35Speaker 1: It's not good at all. I mean, Sean Watson went
- 43:36Speaker 1: to high school, what, 20 minutes away?
- 43:39Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. There's also an alternate timeline where if he
- 43:41Speaker 2: is the rented mule, and those were the words that
- 43:44Speaker 2: Cecil Newton used to describe what he feared Cam Newton
- 43:46Speaker 2: would be at Mississippi State. And I think that has
- 43:49Speaker 2: to do with usage as well.
- 43:50Speaker 1: Although that's exactly what happened at Auburn. Well, that's exactly
- 43:53Speaker 1: what happened at Auburn.
- 43:54Speaker 2: But here's the thing. So he is used as a
- 43:57Speaker 2: rented mule in Auburn, but nobody stops him. I think
- 44:02Speaker 2: maybe Cecil even underestimated what Cam was going to do
- 44:04Speaker 2: because I know what they would have had him do
- 44:07Speaker 2: at Mississippi State. And that would have been QB power. Yes.
- 44:10Speaker 1: A lot.
- 44:10Speaker 2: He would have been going battering ram Tebow style straight
- 44:14Speaker 2: up the middle. Right. And that's. not what he ended
- 44:18Speaker 2: up doing at auburn but i think the results would
- 44:20Speaker 2: have been the same yeah you know like we saw
- 44:22Speaker 2: a dude nobody.
- 44:22Speaker 1: Could tackle look and that look i can skip to
- 44:25Speaker 1: the next part by the way they beat the dog
- 44:27Speaker 1: shit out of south carolina in the sec championship game
- 44:29Speaker 1: when they play again and then in a rather unimpressive
- 44:32Speaker 1: performance from cam they won the national championship game a
- 44:35Speaker 1: game i did not see live because i got food
- 44:37Speaker 1: poisoning from a taco place in los angeles when i
- 44:40Speaker 1: was out there to do jim rome's burning it was
- 44:42Speaker 1: a really terrible situation um Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was rough.
- 44:45Speaker 1: I don't want to say which one because they had
- 44:47Speaker 1: national chain, but they did me dirty and I'll never
- 44:48Speaker 1: go back there again. But this gets me back to
- 44:51Speaker 1: the $ 180, 000 and the conversation that I had with a
- 44:54Speaker 1: buddy of mine, my man Chief. Chief is a, well,
- 44:57Speaker 1: I think he's still at A & T, but he's
- 44:58Speaker 1: an economics professor. He also played college football at Ole Miss.
- 45:03Speaker 1: And Chief said to me once, and I hadn't really
- 45:05Speaker 1: thought about this, but he was right. And he said,
- 45:08Speaker 1: here's why that $ 180, 000 was a steal. And he says,
- 45:13Speaker 1: If you had put Cam Newton on any team in
- 45:17Speaker 1: the top 25, and keep in mind, like Stanford with
- 45:21Speaker 1: Andrew Luck was in the top 25 that year, okay?
- 45:24Speaker 1: We're saying any team, if you put Cam Newton, that
- 45:28Speaker 1: quarterback of that team, that team would win a national championship.
- 45:33Speaker 1: And we know this to be true because the least
- 45:36Speaker 1: talented team in the top 25 that year from top
- 45:39Speaker 1: to bottom was Auburn.
- 45:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 45:43Speaker 1: And they won a national championship with Cam Newton. If
- 45:46Speaker 1: you put Cam Newton on Florida, which still had a
- 45:48Speaker 1: bunch of players at that time, not even, not even
- 45:51Speaker 1: urban and Steve Adazio could have messed that up.
- 45:55Speaker 2: No, it wouldn't have like, that's the ifs that come
- 45:59Speaker 2: off of him and off of this case, if Florida
- 46:02Speaker 2: keeps him, that's another title. I feel certain saying that
- 46:06Speaker 2: I don't even think that the 2009 version, of Alabama,
- 46:10Speaker 2: which was a very tuned in version of Alabama. I
- 46:14Speaker 2: don't think they beat Cam Newton one-on-one. No, I don't.
- 46:17Speaker 2: And I know that because the following year they didn't. Right.
- 46:20Speaker 2: With a lot of the same personnel. So I don't think,
- 46:23Speaker 2: I don't think they get around that. I think that
- 46:27Speaker 2: if you, if Gene Chizik, okay. Who, by the way,
- 46:32Speaker 2: like we know who Gene Chizik is because of Cam Newton. Yes.
- 46:35Speaker 2: like that's it. He would be, he would be a footnote.
- 46:38Speaker 2: He gets an extent. He gets a contract out of that.
- 46:41Speaker 2: He gets a buyout out of that. He gets additional
- 46:43Speaker 2: jobs out of it. He gets a TV gig. He
- 46:45Speaker 2: gets a TV gig out of that. You don't get
- 46:47Speaker 2: a TV gig unless you won that title. Yeah. With
- 46:49Speaker 2: that Auburn team.
- 46:50Speaker 3: Right.
- 46:50Speaker 2: If, if Auburn isn't in that race, they don't end
- 46:55Speaker 2: up in the title game versus Oregon and Oregon potentially
- 46:59Speaker 2: has a title. because oregon plays a very ugly game
- 47:02Speaker 2: that is one of the ugliest games i've ever attended
- 47:04Speaker 2: i was there it's unwatchable but oregon probably would have
- 47:08Speaker 2: won that game right versus almost anyone else but in
- 47:11Speaker 2: the second half again cam gets it together and they
- 47:14Speaker 2: do what they did all year and they come back
- 47:15Speaker 2: and win that game so the ducks have a championship
- 47:17Speaker 2: game and potentially a championship after that right which would
- 47:21Speaker 2: give the pac-12 a championship which you know they they
- 47:25Speaker 2: I haven't had since.
- 47:26Speaker 1: A non-USC championship.
- 47:28Speaker 2: A non-USC championship at that. The rarest of all things.
- 47:33Speaker 1: Let me tell you this about the way Chizik goes
- 47:36Speaker 1: in this. And so Chizik had been the defensive coordinator
- 47:39Speaker 1: at Auburn in 2004 when they went undefeated and were loaded, okay?
- 47:44Speaker 1: Loaded on offense, loaded on defense, just flat out loaded.
- 47:49Speaker 1: And that is actually a very important paradigmatic shift in
- 47:53Speaker 1: the way that we thought about the sec because Oklahoma
- 47:57Speaker 1: was the number two team that year. And they went
- 47:59Speaker 1: and got their doors blown off by USC. And that
- 48:01Speaker 1: became the, you can't keep an sec champion out under
- 48:04Speaker 1: like ever again.
- 48:05Speaker 2: Right.
- 48:06Speaker 1: That's the way people looked at it.
- 48:07Speaker 2: Okay.
- 48:08Speaker 1: Chizik went to Texas for a couple of years as
- 48:10Speaker 1: defense coordinator. He's the defensive coordinator in oh five. Where again,
- 48:14Speaker 1: what Gene Chizik is really good at is telling really
- 48:16Speaker 1: good defensive players to go be really good defensive players.
- 48:19Speaker 1: great gift, right? He goes and coaches at Iowa State,
- 48:22Speaker 1: five and 19 over the course of two years. He
- 48:24Speaker 1: gets the Auburn job in 2009. Black people got a
- 48:28Speaker 1: lot of questions about how such a thing ever happens, okay? 2010,
- 48:31Speaker 1: they win that national championship. I'll never forget this. We
- 48:35Speaker 1: did around the horn before the start of the college
- 48:37Speaker 1: football season in 2011, like opening weekend, and I want
- 48:41Speaker 1: to say Auburn was playing against Utah State And I
- 48:45Speaker 1: was FaceTime. I mean, not FaceTime, the showdown. That's what
- 48:48Speaker 1: they called it. So I'm doing the showdown, and I say, hey,
- 48:52Speaker 1: keep an eye on Auburn and see what they look
- 48:56Speaker 1: like without Cam Newton. And reality hit me like that
- 48:59Speaker 1: was the most obvious thing in the world to say.
- 49:02Speaker 1: And I'm like, brother, I don't think you understand what
- 49:05Speaker 1: I'm talking about.
- 49:05Speaker 2: Chucky Keeton is about to beat them in Auburn.
- 49:08Speaker 1: Yep, and almost did. Almost did. But they were– Eight
- 49:12Speaker 1: and five that next year, which is to say, and
- 49:15Speaker 1: I believe this is a fair characterization, Cam Newton was
- 49:18Speaker 1: worth five wins. all by himself.
- 49:22Speaker 2: At least which in football, which in football terms is incalculable.
- 49:26Speaker 2: We talk about like, like value over replacement player. It's
- 49:29Speaker 2: very hard to calculate with a short, with a small
- 49:31Speaker 2: data set like football. It really is right. Like it's just,
- 49:35Speaker 2: you got 11 guys on each side. It's very difficult.
- 49:38Speaker 2: But if you want to do a big raw number,
- 49:40Speaker 2: go look at this quarterback is worth X. This quarterback
- 49:43Speaker 2: is this much of your production. That's the thing that
- 49:45Speaker 2: you can go look at and look at how much
- 49:48Speaker 2: production Cam Newton was worth versus any other player relative
- 49:54Speaker 2: to the team. I don't mean in total yards. You
- 49:57Speaker 2: can go search the stats and go, okay, well, this
- 49:59Speaker 2: guy had more total yards. How many total yards out
- 50:02Speaker 2: of your team's production were we talking about here? How
- 50:06Speaker 2: many touchdowns can I attach to him? There are guys
- 50:09Speaker 2: who have had these kind of seasons in terms of
- 50:11Speaker 2: dominance across sports. There are very few of them who
- 50:14Speaker 2: have had it in football, right? And if you're going
- 50:17Speaker 2: to look, the pros are not where you want to
- 50:19Speaker 2: look at. You want to look in college where you
- 50:20Speaker 2: can take one player and hitch an entire squad to
- 50:23Speaker 2: them and maybe get nine plays. Like look at Diego Pavia.
- 50:26Speaker 2: We know Diego Pavia's name because he's been the anchor
- 50:30Speaker 2: for the Commodores, entire effort to be a legitimate football
- 50:35Speaker 2: team in the sec in 2024 and 2025 we know
- 50:38Speaker 2: his name he's got outstanding numbers i voted for him
- 50:41Speaker 2: for the heisman was that wrong now that i've watched
- 50:45Speaker 2: trinidad chambliss in the playoffs potentially potentially i will confess
- 50:51Speaker 2: might have made the wrong vote there buddy um but
- 50:55Speaker 2: you know his name because he is so much of
- 50:58Speaker 2: their total production and i will tell you that whatever
- 51:00Speaker 2: diego diego pavi has done probably about half as much
- 51:04Speaker 2: as what Cam did proportionally against the entire prime SEC
- 51:09Speaker 2: schedule of 2010.
- 51:11Speaker 1: Do you realize how good and talented one has to
- 51:15Speaker 1: be to put up the passing stat lines that Cam
- 51:20Speaker 1: did at Auburn and for the NFL of 2011 to say,
- 51:24Speaker 1: come on over.
- 51:27Speaker 2: Come on down.
- 51:28Speaker 1: We'll figure this out. Like we got, I remember when
- 51:30Speaker 1: that draft was coming up, I was talking to a
- 51:31Speaker 1: guy who knew some things and he was like the
- 51:33Speaker 1: Panthers at first, they were really locked in on two guys,
- 51:37Speaker 1: Patrick Peterson and AJ green, by the way, this is
- 51:40Speaker 1: one of the great drafts of all time. We're going
- 51:42Speaker 1: to do one of these episodes about the 2011 draft, um,
- 51:45Speaker 1: in a few weeks. Um, But there was no question.
- 51:49Speaker 1: In a draft that had Von Miller, in a draft
- 51:51Speaker 1: that proved to have J.J. Watt, that had Richard Sherman,
- 51:53Speaker 1: we can go up and down all the guys that
- 51:55Speaker 1: wound up being taken in that draft. If you redo
- 51:58Speaker 1: that draft with all the Hall of Famers that we
- 52:01Speaker 1: already know are in that draft, if we redo that draft,
- 52:05Speaker 1: the number one pick is Cam Newton, period. Even with
- 52:08Speaker 1: the short career, right, he's not going to end up
- 52:11Speaker 1: in the Hall of Fame, all of that. The number
- 52:13Speaker 1: one pick in that draft is Cam Newton.
- 52:16Speaker 2: Yeah. I would argue that you want to talk about
- 52:18Speaker 2: two franchises that he carried, you know, he got the
- 52:21Speaker 2: Carolina Panthers to a Superbowl. He didn't get them out
- 52:24Speaker 2: with a win, but he got them to a Superbowl,
- 52:27Speaker 2: which in terms of franchise impact, it's incredible.
- 52:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 52:33Speaker 2: Also survived a car crash that probably would have killed
- 52:37Speaker 2: anyone else. And he walked away from it. He did
- 52:40Speaker 2: when he was at Carolina. I don't, This gets to,
- 52:43Speaker 2: you know, we've made a bunch of points that I
- 52:45Speaker 2: hope are relatively smart and humble, but also at the
- 52:48Speaker 2: same time complicated and interesting to everybody. This is the
- 52:52Speaker 2: point where I would like to remind everybody that Cam,
- 52:55Speaker 2: in addition to being what I think is the single
- 52:57Speaker 2: most valuable player in the history of college football to
- 53:00Speaker 2: one single team, and also a pivotal point in college
- 53:02Speaker 2: football history, I would like to make the extremely smart
- 53:06Speaker 2: point that I don't think you know how big this
- 53:08Speaker 2: motherfucker is.
- 53:10Speaker 1: No.
- 53:10Speaker 2: That's a huge man.
- 53:12Speaker 1: No.
- 53:13Speaker 2: Football players think he's big. His numbers, I don't care
- 53:17Speaker 2: what his numbers say. Like, when you say somebody is
- 53:20Speaker 2: a big 6'4, Yo, it's impossible to explain.
- 53:24Speaker 1: Like, I know people who are 240 pounds, right? There
- 53:27Speaker 1: are people who are listening to this that are 240 pounds.
- 53:31Speaker 1: It's not the same. It is impossible to explain how
- 53:34Speaker 1: big he is. It was so funny. The Super Bowl
- 53:37Speaker 1: in Las Vegas, and that's when he had made the
- 53:39Speaker 1: game changer game manager quote. And I'll never forget. I
- 53:42Speaker 1: think Dominique gave him some hell over that.
- 53:44Speaker 2: I did not.
- 53:44Speaker 1: I knew exactly what that guy was talking about when
- 53:47Speaker 1: he said that, right? Dominique said he walked past cam.
- 53:51Speaker 1: It was like, Oh, okay. I understand what he's talking
- 53:53Speaker 1: about now.
- 53:55Speaker 2: No, no, it's not. It doesn't make sense. He's built
- 53:59Speaker 2: like master chief. Like he looks like a space Marine.
- 54:02Speaker 2: He is the biggest thing on the field. Even if
- 54:06Speaker 2: there are other bigger things, right? Everything's huge on him.
- 54:10Speaker 2: He's got big calves. Like he has the calves of
- 54:13Speaker 2: an offensive lineman. Like when he lines up, I remember
- 54:16Speaker 2: seeing him at Florida and, And he came out on
- 54:18Speaker 2: the field, and I remember thinking, I was like, oh,
- 54:20Speaker 2: that's a big tackle. That's a, oh, that's Cam. Yeah, shit. Like, I,
- 54:28Speaker 2: in terms of what a quarterback could be, we're used
- 54:32Speaker 2: to quarterbacks being tall and some of them being kind
- 54:35Speaker 2: of muscular. I don't think you're as big in terms
- 54:38Speaker 2: of total bulk. Like, we don't have Josh Allen-sized dudes, right?
- 54:45Speaker 2: Very often, but we have them a lot more now
- 54:47Speaker 2: that you have a guy like cam. And now we
- 54:50Speaker 2: see prospects like that and go, yeah, sure. Go ahead. Start,
- 54:54Speaker 2: start a power forward at quarterback. Right. Start a center.
- 54:58Speaker 3: Hell.
- 54:59Speaker 2: Right.
- 54:59Speaker 1: He's like the, he's like the Darnell Washington of quarterbacks.
- 55:03Speaker 2: Right, like just incalculably huge. Should not be that size.
- 55:07Speaker 2: If anything, you know, this is a real dumb point
- 55:10Speaker 2: I'm making, but I hope that if you go back
- 55:12Speaker 2: and look at what he's doing to the LSU defense
- 55:15Speaker 2: in 2010 on that run, or if you go back
- 55:17Speaker 2: and look at his highlights, just know that when he
- 55:20Speaker 2: was passing you, it was like a van sweeping by
- 55:22Speaker 2: you in a parking lot. Like it made a noise.
- 55:25Speaker 1: He's just.
- 55:28Speaker 2: It doesn't make sense. I've seen the mic'd up with
- 55:31Speaker 2: one of the Bosa's. Pardon me if I can't remember
- 55:33Speaker 2: which one or distinguish between the two. But one of
- 55:36Speaker 2: the Bosa's mic'd up talking about tackling Josh Allen and Josh.
- 55:39Speaker 2: And they said, the ref is like, hey, man, that
- 55:41Speaker 2: was a little low. Next time I'm going to have
- 55:43Speaker 2: to probably throw a flag if you go in that
- 55:44Speaker 2: low on him. And Bosa looks at him and goes.
- 55:47Speaker 1: Look at him.
- 55:48Speaker 2: What the fuck am I supposed to do with that? And,
- 55:54Speaker 2: you know, this is somebody who is also huge, right?
- 55:58Speaker 2: an extremely strong, a 99th percentile human being in terms
- 56:01Speaker 2: of physical capability. And he's looking at this guy like,
- 56:05Speaker 2: this is a question from hell. I can't answer it.
- 56:08Speaker 2: You're asking me to do something I don't want to
- 56:11Speaker 2: and can't do. He's one of the few players who
- 56:18Speaker 2: is metaphorically and literally as big as he should be
- 56:22Speaker 2: in terms of college football history.
- 56:24Speaker 1: He was that guy. And this is Time Machine Tuesdays.
- 56:28Speaker 1: We're going to do this every Tuesday, man. Brother Spencer Hall,
- 56:30Speaker 1: check him out at Channel 6. This was fun. I
- 56:37Speaker 1: am enjoying this.
- 56:38Speaker 2: Listen, we're going to do Manziel.
- 56:42Speaker 1: When Manziel's time comes, we are definitely going to get
- 56:44Speaker 1: to Manziel because that was a time that is good.
- 56:50Speaker 2: That is the way to put it. If you want cameo,
- 56:53Speaker 2: time was had.
- 56:55Speaker 1: Now imagine this. Imagine you put Cam Newton on the
- 56:58Speaker 1: team that Manziel jumped onto that had three first-round picks
- 57:02Speaker 1: on the offensive line, Mike Evans, and the man who
- 57:06Speaker 1: one day still might put it all together, Christian Michael,
- 57:09Speaker 1: at running back.
- 57:10Speaker 2: We wouldn't have those 24-17 games now, would we? LAUGHTER No,
- 57:17Speaker 2: it'd be week four and everyone going, what? Yeah.
- 57:23Speaker 1: That would be a team that had a legitimate, I
- 57:25Speaker 1: don't know, I think they could keep it close against
- 57:26Speaker 1: the Cardinals.
- 57:27Speaker 2: Listen, I'm going to give you, listen, I'm going to
- 57:29Speaker 2: give you, yeah, they might, but I'm going to give
- 57:30Speaker 2: you the haters, the haters prescription, which is, you know
- 57:33Speaker 2: what they'd be, Bo, at the end of the season?
- 57:35Speaker 2: Eight and five.
- 57:36Speaker 1: Yes. Eight and five.
- 57:37Speaker 2: They would.
- 57:38Speaker 1: Somehow, someway, even if they weren't eight and five, somehow
- 57:41Speaker 1: it would be like this year, where at the end,
- 57:43Speaker 1: Aggie felt eight and five, now didn't you? Didn't it
- 57:46Speaker 1: feel just like eight and five?
- 57:49Speaker 2: Right before that, I wrote that the two most psychologically
- 57:52Speaker 2: shattering things that could happen, like the worst possible case
- 57:54Speaker 2: is that if A & M lost to Texas and
- 57:57Speaker 2: then they lost in the playoff. And Bo, they lost
- 58:00Speaker 2: to Texas and they lost in the playoff.
- 58:02Speaker 1: My favorite thing about that is that I never wanted
- 58:07Speaker 1: Texas to play them again. Like, when I was really
- 58:09Speaker 1: invested in that. I was like, you want to go
- 58:10Speaker 1: to the SEC?
- 58:11Speaker 2: Fine.
- 58:11Speaker 1: Never play them again.
- 58:13Speaker 2: Leave with the belt, right?
- 58:14Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Never play them again. Case McCoy walked
- 58:16Speaker 1: you down at your house. Never play them again. And instead,
- 58:21Speaker 1: Texas has chosen to take that to another level of,
- 58:23Speaker 1: how about we just never lose to them again, huh?
- 58:26Speaker 1: What you think about that? Like, the fact that A &
- 58:28Speaker 1: M could not win that game the first year that
- 58:31Speaker 1: the series was resuscitated and it was in their house?
- 58:34Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 58:36Speaker 1: Never no ones to them again it's.
- 58:39Speaker 2: Just it's devastating it's devastating but i'm making jokes about
- 58:42Speaker 2: eight and five that texas a & m team with
- 58:44Speaker 2: cam newton would have um people would still shudder eyes
- 58:49Speaker 2: would twitch you'd be like how how how'd you lose
- 58:52Speaker 2: by 70 points to a football team and you'd go listen.
- 58:56Speaker 1: Listen i was there they would have been 10 and
- 58:59Speaker 1: 0 after seven games Yeah.
- 59:03Speaker 2: We would have just given them additional. NCAA just would
- 59:08Speaker 2: have investigated on principle. Yeah. been like something's happening yeah.
- 59:11Speaker 1: They've been like 10 8 rounds in boxing like that's
- 59:13Speaker 1: just except instead of a 10 8 round if they
- 59:15Speaker 1: let you get 11.
- 59:16Speaker 2: Oh okay listen you want to talk about sec omerta
- 59:19Speaker 2: okay you want to talk about keeping lacosa nostra quiet
- 59:23Speaker 2: and not snitching okay sec you say we're good at
- 59:26Speaker 2: it no there's gossip how often How often does everybody
- 59:30Speaker 2: you know talk about college football calls up and goes, listen,
- 59:32Speaker 2: I got eight or nine things from this week. Oh, yeah.
- 59:35Speaker 1: They gossip, but they don't call the cops.
- 59:37Speaker 2: No, they don't call the cops. Okay. Well, at the time,
- 59:39Speaker 2: we got Big 12 Texas A & M, right? Yes.
- 59:43Speaker 1: They're calling the cops.
- 59:44Speaker 2: They're calling the cops. There's all kinds of Texas. First
- 59:47Speaker 2: of all, Texas. A & M is going to win
- 59:49Speaker 2: five games by 30 points each, and Texas is going
- 59:52Speaker 2: to convene the state house.
- 59:54Speaker 3: Yes.
- 59:56Speaker 2: Be like, well, we got to outlaw this.
- 59:58Speaker 1: Yeah, this has to stop right now.
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: That can't be real.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: They would have arrested Cam at Memorial Stadium before they
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: allowed him to actually play any football there.
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: But listen, you're like, oh, well, why would there be
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: a cop on the field at Texas A & M? Listen,
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: they're bumping shoulders in.
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: The tunnel in 2025. What do you think they wouldn't
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: do in 2010?
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: That's right. That's right.
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: My brother. I appreciate you, man.
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you.
