- 0:00But even can. Welcome to Bear's Smokehouse Barbecue here in downtown Hartford alongside Yukon
- 0:05men's ice hockey head coach Mike Kavna Adam Jardino with you, Coach, It's
- 0:10been a couple of weekends since we've had a show here, so four games
- 0:13have been in the docket. We'll get to last weekend against the unh Wildcats,
- 0:18but first rewind the tape to January twelfth, thirteenth, a top ten
- 0:23opponent in the Main Black Bears. We were previewing it the last time Maine,
- 0:29incredibly talented. You held the Black Bears without a goal for five of
- 0:34the six periods. Now, I know that there's a caveat to all of
- 0:38that because of the one period where they scored. But how do you think
- 0:42you did holistically that weekend against Maine? Well, I thought we played a
- 0:46very good weekend against a great hockey team. We kind of self destructed and
- 0:53fell apart a little bit. In the third period. We were up three
- 0:56to one and had a power play and gave up a shorthanded goal, which
- 1:00is a cardinal sin, and then you know, then they got a power
- 1:04play and scored to tie it. It was a disappointing loss, but I
- 1:11was really proud of the guys the way they came back on Saturday, especially
- 1:15without Jake Flynn and Hudson Chandor, to be able to grind out a really
- 1:22well deserved to nothing when on Saturday. So in that third period with the
- 1:26shorthanded goal, you said it's a cardinal sin. Was there what specifically broke
- 1:33down in that situation that the team needed to do better on? Well,
- 1:38we turned a puck over, you know, so sometimes when you're on the
- 1:42power play, you don't sense danger when the puck turns over because you just
- 1:48figure there's only one guy or two guys going down. And they got three
- 1:53guys involved. They were pushing and we were late coming back and they want
- 1:59to battle. One guy beat two of our guys and made a play and
- 2:01their guy rang it off the post and end. So, you know,
- 2:07it was a play that we learned from though last night because we were in
- 2:10a very similar situation in a two nothing game and we got a power play,
- 2:14and we had a great power play and we didn't give them. We
- 2:17understood that, you know, you can't sell out to score a goal and
- 2:22give one up. So I was really proud of the way the guys handled
- 2:24it last night. Maine in New Hampshire main number seven at the time,
- 2:30You and Ah number seventeen in the country. Compare the offense is how how
- 2:35does you and h operate compared to what Maine can do. Yeah, they're
- 2:38both very good. I think you and H is extremely you know, they
- 2:42get a lot of people will talk about how quick their forwards are, and
- 2:45they are, but I was really impressed with their defense. I thought that
- 2:49they had size, they were strong, they moved pucks. I was really
- 2:53impressed with their defense and their goaltenders playing very well. Also, so very
- 3:00similar teams. I would probably give the edge to Maine on their top line.
- 3:06Those NATO brothers are in Breen are really elite, although con Me and
- 3:12la Clerk are very good too, But otherwise, you know, they're very
- 3:16very similar teams. They get a lot of speed and depth upfront. You
- 3:23mentioned the injury. Hudson Chandor has since returned. Jake Flynn, he came
- 3:27back and played the third period. I believe that Friday night after going down
- 3:30with an injury, so he was able to return that night. But where
- 3:35do things stand with him in his health. Well, he's working to get
- 3:40back. We're hoping to have him back this Friday. It's not definite yet.
- 3:45We didn't practice today, so we'll see tomorrow how he's skating again.
- 3:52We're here with head coach Mike Kabana on the Yukon Men's Ice Hockey Coaches Show,
- 3:57rewinding to two weekends ago against Mainz So Friday night, the result wasn't
- 4:01there, but then on Saturday the bounce back was a record crowd in at
- 4:06tenance. Yeah, at the Excel Center on Saturday, how did the guys
- 4:11react to just that's your volume of people behind them? They reacted, well,
- 4:15we won two nothing, So I thought it was awesome. And credit
- 4:19to our marketing department and ticket department for putting that together. And you know
- 4:28Sports Info Collin sitting right here in front of me, so you know,
- 4:32they do a great job of promoting our program. And to have ninety five
- 4:35hundred people in there at the Excel Center, that was almost probably as big
- 4:40as opening night when we played bc SO to nothing. The victory the goalie
- 4:46switched so it was Ethan Hyder on the Friday. But then our Seni,
- 4:49Sir Jeb gets his first opportunity in a little bit, and what did you
- 4:54make of that performance? It was great. You didn't give up any goals,
- 4:57so we probably gave up more Grade A opportunities on Friday than we did
- 5:02on Saturday. But that being said, he kept a very talented team off
- 5:06the scoreboard, so you know, and then he followed that up with another
- 5:11great performance yesterday. So it's nice having two goalies that you can count on.
- 5:16How has he been doing with that the mental side of things, where
- 5:20you're a Division one athlete, you want to be out there, and he
- 5:25just hadn't been getting that opportunity, but all of a sudden put him in
- 5:29for a couple of games and he's really risen to the occasion. Yeah,
- 5:31I think Vince Stilletti does a great job with our goaltenders and he keeps them,
- 5:35you know, mentally engaged, keeps them focused, and makes them understand
- 5:40that even if you're not the starting goal you have to prepare to like you're
- 5:43the starting goaltender because you never know what's going to happen. A guy can
- 5:46go down in the first period. So I got to give a lot of
- 5:50credit to Vince. He does a great job with our goaltenders. We don't
- 5:54talk a lot about Vince. What is his role within the team. How
- 5:57often is he around because he's not a full time he's his full time,
- 6:00No, this year he's full time, bumped up to full time. Okay,
- 6:02so he's there every day. And how many years has he been on
- 6:05staff? This is his let me see, third or fourth, fourth year?
- 6:12Yeah, the years go by too fast for me. So this is
- 6:15his fourth year. So the first three years he was a volunteer and he'd
- 6:20be there like once or twice a week, and he wouldn't be at every
- 6:24game. But now that he's full time, he's here every day and he
- 6:28not only does goaltenders, but he does a lot of development work with our
- 6:31other players. He's on the ice pretty much every morning doing development work.
- 6:34And he's been out helping recruiting right now as well. So he's a full
- 6:40time guy. He's very, very intelligent, introspective, and you know,
- 6:46he's a valuable addition to our staff. We'll keep diving into the last couple
- 6:50of weekends of games in a moment. Tomorrow night, the Yukon women's hoops
- 6:55team. They're in Milwaukee for their second meeting of the season with Marquette joined
- 6:59myself and Bob Joyce for all the action, beginning at six point thirty.
- 7:01Here, along the Yukon Sports Network, the Varsity Network App, and the
- 7:04Varsitynetwork dot Com will continue with Mike Kavanaugh in just a little bit
