- 0:00You know what I love more than giving my opinion?
- 0:03Hearing how great my opinions are.
- 0:06So please feel free to leave a comment at the end of this
- 0:09episode letting me know exactly what part you loved the most.
- 0:26You guys, welcome back to the opinion you didn't ask for.
- 0:31I'm Hannah and I am 30. You guys, I am 30.
- 0:37I have been waiting 10 years to be 30.
- 0:41I have been waiting an entire decade, OK?
- 0:44I feel about being 30 the way that Khloe Kardashian felt about
- 0:48turning 40. So excited.
- 0:50This is my decade. I did not celebrate my 30th with
- 0:56denims and diamonds and Snoop Dogg performing.
- 1:00OK, that didn't happen. So we're not on the same level,
- 1:04but my excitement has been, I have been so prepped to be 30
- 1:12because in my 30s is when I get my ACT together.
- 1:17I mean, watch out world, I am going, you're not going to
- 1:22recognize me. I am going to be unstoppable,
- 1:25Kate. That has been my mentality with
- 1:27turning 30. I will say I have yet to do
- 1:31really anything that I have like told myself.
- 1:34Like I've said in my 30s I will be in the best shape of my life
- 1:39and did I low key expect to wake up on my 30th and I'm 30 lbs
- 1:44lighter in the best shape of my life?
- 1:47Absolutely. Did I?
- 1:49Absolutely not That's ridiculous.
- 1:53I mean that third baby did me dirty, OK?
- 1:55My 20s was spent sacrificing my body for children.
- 2:01Love them. They really were not respectful
- 2:05to this body of mine and it has nothing to do with the fact in
- 2:10my third pregnancy I ate Taco Bell minimum four times a week
- 2:15as early as 5:00 at night but is also as late as like 11:30 PM
- 2:22sometimes. My husband was driving to Taco
- 2:24Bell at 11:59 and it closes at midnight.
- 2:29We lived 2 minutes down the road.
- 2:31Very unhealthy. I've contemplated suing Taco
- 2:35Bell for not shutting me off like a bar tab.
- 2:38They they shut you down they tell you you're you're done you
- 2:41have drank too much Taco Bell. I needed you to say, girl, you
- 2:46will not fit in anything if you continue down this path.
- 2:49And they were right. OK, I should have been told no.
- 2:52My husband should have told me no.
- 2:54But he said pregnant me and the word no just don't go together.
- 2:58So he wanted to live. It's fine.
- 3:01So I gained a solid amount of weight in that third pregnancy
- 3:06that I am still working off, but I was like in my 30s.
- 3:10That weight is going to be gone. It's it's out the window.
- 3:14I am done with it. I am leaving that in my 20s.
- 3:18Newsflash, it's still here. We're fine.
- 3:21We're working on it. I also was like, we are going to
- 3:24be rich. I mean, filthy, stinking rich,
- 3:28right? My 30s, we're going to travel to
- 3:31all these countries I've dreamt of because in my 20s, we
- 3:35traveled nowhere. So I mean, I am ready.
- 3:39I'm ready to be the person that God wants me to be.
- 3:44And you know what, it hasn't happened yet.
- 3:47I am still in the same situation that I was a couple weeks ago
- 3:52because it's been a couple weeks.
- 3:53Hannah, what is wrong with you? Life doesn't just change in the
- 3:57flash of an eye because you, your number changed.
- 4:00That's not how this works. So I am stoked to be 30.
- 4:05I had the best birthday. I will say there was no Snoop
- 4:09Dogg, but there was no tears either.
- 4:14And for me, that's a huge win. I have cried every year on my
- 4:20birthday because of unspoken expectations.
- 4:24I have assumed something would be done, but I didn't ask for
- 4:30it. I didn't tell my husband that
- 4:31this is what I wanted or I didn't tell my parents I would
- 4:35like to do this. I just assumed they would know.
- 4:39Like you should know me well enough that you just surprise
- 4:42me, even though I hate surprises.
- 4:44I'm a control freak. I want to be in charge but maybe
- 4:48someone will randomly just do something crazy for me.
- 4:52And then at the end of the day when nothing magical has
- 4:55happened I am so disappointed and I have cried on every
- 5:00birthday. Like the song it's my party and
- 5:03I'll cry if I want to. That should be my birthday theme
- 5:07song. OK so I didn't cry this birthday
- 5:10and that is like a huge win. What a gift to everyone in my
- 5:16life that was here on my birthday.
- 5:17They're like she didn't cry. Must have been a good day.
- 5:20But it was because it was just so chill.
- 5:24There were no unmet expectations.
- 5:27I didn't need this big elaborate thing.
- 5:31I went to my son's flag football game.
- 5:35He did phenomenal. Couldn't have been prouder.
- 5:39I ate Chinese food, I had Cold stone, and I went to bed.
- 5:45I mean, it was such a good day and I realized I don't need to
- 5:52be where I want to be at 39 and right before I turn 40 today.
- 6:00I don't need to expect all these changes to happen super, super
- 6:05fast. And I just have what I want
- 6:08because I see these people who are 10 years older than me,
- 6:12they've worked so hard for what they have.
- 6:15But the world we live in, you can order anything in a moment
- 6:19and it'll be delivered to your door, gift wrapped.
- 6:22You don't really have to work as hard for certain things
- 6:26nowadays. And I think that that has ruined
- 6:29our ability to give our self grace, to appreciate where we
- 6:35have been and to have that motivation to want to work
- 6:38harder, to want to get to where we want to be.
- 6:41And then we can celebrate that. I don't think you appreciate
- 6:45things as much when they're just handed to you when you didn't
- 6:48have to work for them. You will not appreciate it as
- 6:52much. And I have found you won't take
- 6:54care of it as well because it wasn't something that you had to
- 6:58labor for, like the labor of love.
- 7:01So I know that when I get my dream body, it's because it was
- 7:05a labor of love. It's because I worked so hard
- 7:09and I didn't quit and I kept going even though it took a
- 7:13really long time and was really hard.
- 7:15I know that one day when we buy our dream house, it's going to
- 7:19be because we worked really hard to be able to afford that.
- 7:23When I am on the beach in Greece, I will That's going to
- 7:29be my I made it moment. OK, Mark my words, I'm going to
- 7:33go to Greece. It's been on my bucket list
- 7:35since I was 12. I will be in Greece one day.
- 7:39Not the movie, the country. And I can't wait.
- 7:43But that moment isn't today. And you have to be OK with you
- 7:48can't have everything everyone else has just because you want
- 7:52it. You need to be able to work for
- 7:55it. And I think that that's almost a
- 7:57lost thing because we just, we want what we want.
- 8:01And a lot of the times because things are such fast shipping
- 8:06and you can have your delivery at your door in 20 minutes.
- 8:10And we don't appreciate the wait.
- 8:13We don't appreciate that time. And I want to be able to change
- 8:19that about myself, that I enjoy the quiet, I enjoy the chill
- 8:25time, that it's not crazy hustle and bustle and moving and
- 8:29working. And because maybe one day that
- 8:32will be my life. But for right now, I want to
- 8:34appreciate the stage of life that I'm in and to not rush it.
- 8:40And it doesn't need to be perfect.
- 8:41It doesn't need to be pristine. It doesn't need to be picture
- 8:45worthy and postable. And everything just looks
- 8:49phenomenal. And everyone is envying me.
- 8:52And so I want to spend this next decade of my life being a better
- 8:57version of myself and working on myself and accomplishing goals,
- 9:02but not working so hard that I miss the moments that were
- 9:07actually worth celebrating. Because I don't want to
- 9:11accomplish a goal and then look back and be like I did not take
- 9:15time to even enjoy this. I have been, I'm going to be so
- 9:20honest, I have been ready to quit this podcast since the day
- 9:24I started. I think in episode 1 I talked
- 9:27about I'm going to be 30 in a few months because I recorded
- 9:31episode one months ago and I thought that that would be
- 9:36enough. I don't need to actually put it
- 9:38out there. I'm going to record it because I
- 9:41keep feeling like I'm supposed to.
- 9:43And then I'm not going to put it anywhere.
- 9:44It doesn't need to go anywhere. I'm going to move on from this
- 9:47ridiculous idea. And I kept telling myself that.
- 9:52And so I finally, you know, I did it.
- 9:55And I realized I'm like, people are going to be like, what in
- 9:57the world? She's now magically 30, but she
- 10:00was going to be 30 in a few months.
- 10:02But I wasn't ready, I think, to take that next step.
- 10:05I wasn't ready to put that out there.
- 10:08And now that I have, I'm ready to quit.
- 10:10I'm like, OK, well, there has been more support than I even
- 10:15expected. So now I feel anxious and now I
- 10:19feel stressed out that I have to have every episode be so perfect
- 10:23and say something so deep and meaningful.
- 10:26And I've been panicking. So I was like, I think I might
- 10:29retire. I think 2 episodes I retire.
- 10:33What a legend people are going to be like.
- 10:35She's iconic. That woman only needed two
- 10:38episodes and she's done. OK.
- 10:41That's honestly where I've been at, but I've had to remind
- 10:44myself to just chill out, that it's not the end of the world if
- 10:49I don't know, if it's not perfect, if it's not amazing,
- 10:53and that there's no right and wrong way to do this.
- 10:57I think I stress that there's there's so many people who have
- 11:01done this before me who are way more equipped.
- 11:06They have done research, they are prepared.
- 11:11They know the market, they know who they're targeting.
- 11:14I have no idea what the heck I'm doing.
- 11:17I'm just sitting on my couch recording this while my kid is
- 11:21napping because that's the stage of life I'm in right now.
- 11:25And I don't have a beautiful studio with sound equipment and
- 11:30guys that work for me. And that is not my life.
- 11:35And I think it's hard because I look at Khloe Kardashian, who I
- 11:38love by the way, and she starts a podcast and has a gazillion
- 11:43followers and her podcast is doing phenomenal.
- 11:47But she's also A 10 years older and B, she has lived a different
- 11:52life. Her experiences are going to be
- 11:54different and it's not the same. And that's okay.
- 11:58It doesn't need to be the same. It doesn't need to be perfect.
- 12:02And as as a mom, I feel like I I'm given ideas and I'm given
- 12:08instructive criticism by God in simple ways that I will
- 12:13understand it. There are people who are so
- 12:17educated that they can receive answers to things so clearly and
- 12:23in these deep, profound ways. Yeah, that's not me.
- 12:26So a few years ago, we have what our family calls, and I can't
- 12:31say my family, it's my husband and I that's it.
- 12:33We call it the peanut butter parable.
- 12:36And no, it's not biblical, but it could be like Revelations
- 12:42Part 2 kind of a thing. And it was basically God
- 12:47teaching me in the most simple, childlike way that I don't need
- 12:54to be perfect, that I don't need life to go perfectly, and that
- 12:59that's the only way it's going to be successful.
- 13:02That's the only way to find joy. So when I, I had my two kids, I
- 13:07had two under 2, which that one about did me.
- 13:11And I was fighting for my life in the depths of motherhood,
- 13:17just struggling to survive each day.
- 13:20And we sold our house in Arizona.
- 13:23We moved in with my parents, but my husband's job was being
- 13:28difficult and they were keeping him in Arizona longer than they
- 13:31were supposed to because he got a remote position.
- 13:35So the kids and I had to move in with my parents.
- 13:38He stayed in Arizona with his parents and I spent an entire
- 13:42summer being a single mom living with my parents with two small
- 13:48children. I was struggling.
- 13:51I was having the hardest time. It was a really difficult time
- 13:54in my life. Well, in that time, my son was
- 13:59not even a year and a half. He's a year, little over a year
- 14:02old at the time, and he was so adamant that he was going to
- 14:08starve to death. That boy was trying to not
- 14:12survive. I would beg him to just lick the
- 14:16chicken nugget on his plate. I'm like, please just smell it.
- 14:19Maybe it'll like go through your nose and into your stomach and
- 14:22somehow you're going to get nutrients.
- 14:24This kid refused to eat. So if you are a parent and you
- 14:29have experienced this, you get it.
- 14:31You are just happy if they put anything in their mouth that's
- 14:35not a rock. OK so one day I was making him a
- 14:39sandwich and I made it was a piece of bread, some peanut
- 14:42butter and some sugar. And yes I said sugar because
- 14:46everyone looks at me like I'm a psychopath when I say that I eat
- 14:50peanut butter and sugar sandwiches.
- 14:52That is how I grew up. I did not know that was weird
- 14:55till I went to college. OK, Didn't know that till my
- 14:59roommates were like, you're weird.
- 15:01No, I'm like, no, it's not. Try it.
- 15:02You'll like it. So he has this perfect sandwich.
- 15:05I place it in front of him. He's sitting at the table.
- 15:09He immediately opens the sandwich and just starts licking
- 15:13it. And I'm mortified.
- 15:16Like, what are you doing, kid? Is this your first time seeing a
- 15:18sandwich? I know it's not because I've
- 15:20made them a million times. What is happening?
- 15:23So I walk over there and I'm like, no, no, no.
- 15:25And I fold the sandwich back up and I put it to his mouth.
- 15:27He takes a bite and I'm like, OK, there we go.
- 15:30You just needed a quick little reminder.
- 15:33It's like riding a bike. You'll figure it out real quick.
- 15:35OK, we're good. So he's at the table.
- 15:37I'm standing in the kitchen watching him.
- 15:40And he immediately opens it back up and starts licking it again.
- 15:44And then he starts nibbling from like the inside out.
- 15:47And I'm like, what is wrong with you, you crazy kid?
- 15:51That's not how you do it. That's why I walk back over,
- 15:54fold it again and we go through the same thing.
- 15:56And I walk away and I'm like, OK, And he does it again.
- 15:59And as I'm standing there, so frustrated with him for not
- 16:05eating this sandwich like a normal person, I just have this
- 16:08thought. And it was as if God was
- 16:10standing next to me and it was, what does it matter?
- 16:14And I was like, well, it matters because he's doing it wrong.
- 16:18And the voice was like, is he doing it wrong?
- 16:20Or is he just doing it different?
- 16:23You wanted this kid to eat. He is eating.
- 16:27And now you aren't satisfied with how he's eating it because
- 16:31in your mind there's only one right way to do this.
- 16:36But that's not the reality. If it's in his mouth, he's
- 16:39chewing it and swallowing it. He is getting the nutrients from
- 16:42this sandwich. It's just not going in his mouth
- 16:45the way you think it should. And I am standing there feeling
- 16:49so humbled, also feeling like an idiot for fighting with a one
- 16:54year old on how to eat a peanut butter sandwich.
- 16:57Then I was like, wow, OK, that is that is so deep.
- 17:01I needed that right now. You'd think she learned.
- 17:06She learned this lesson and she's applied it in her life and
- 17:11everything's great, right? Wrong.
- 17:14Of course not. Because I am so hard headed,
- 17:17such a thick skull. It takes a few times.
- 17:21So a few months later, might have been a year, six months, I
- 17:24have no idea. It was me and time.
- 17:26We're not good. But a while later, my daughter
- 17:29was in the kitchen and it was lunchtime and you guessed it,
- 17:32we're making peanut butter sandwiches.
- 17:34And she goes, Mom, can I help make my sandwich?
- 17:37And if you understand that as a parent, you just want it to be
- 17:42done as fast as possible, you know how to do it.
- 17:45You can do it way easier, way less mess.
- 17:48You're thinking, why? Why do you want to help?
- 17:52But you're also supposed to be teaching them how to help and
- 17:55how to be responsible and take care of themselves.
- 17:59And you want to teach them the right ways to hold a knife.
- 18:03So it is my job at this point to let her help.
- 18:07So I say yes. And she grabs a chair and she
- 18:10has the two pieces of bread, some peanut butter.
- 18:13This time we had Jelly. Like apparently normal people,
- 18:17she puts the peanut butter on one side, she puts the Jelly on
- 18:21the other, and she looks up at me and she's beaming.
- 18:25She is so proud of herself. She's like, mom, I did it.
- 18:30I was like, good job, sis. Well, I looked down and the
- 18:33peanut butter was really kind of clumpy in the middle and it
- 18:36wasn't on the edges at all. So I take the knife and I start
- 18:41smoothing it out so that it's perfect, that it's even and
- 18:44smooth. And I do it with a Jelly and I
- 18:47look down and I'm so proud of myself.
- 18:50Like, wow, that looks really, really good.
- 18:53And I look over at her and she looks so deflated.
- 18:58And she goes, why'd you do that? And I was like, Oh, well, it
- 19:01wasn't perfect. And the minute the words came
- 19:04out of my mouth, it was the same voice that said, what does it
- 19:10matter? In that moment?
- 19:11I'm just standing there and she's just looking heartbroken.
- 19:15And she looks down at the sandwich and then looks back at
- 19:18me. And she goes, I tried really
- 19:20hard and I felt crushed because what do you mean that the
- 19:25sandwich wasn't perfect? What do you mean that you took
- 19:29the joy from this little girl? She worked so hard to accomplish
- 19:33something on her own, but because it did not look how you
- 19:37thought it should look, you took that from her to make yourself
- 19:42feel at ease with how it was. And I spiraled you guys.
- 19:47I spiraled for days on this because I realized God tried to
- 19:52teach me months ago. It took two times, but I I had
- 19:56this whole epiphany on how I look at life versus what reality
- 20:01is. And there is no right or wrong
- 20:04way to make a peanut butter sandwich.
- 20:06There are 1,000,000 different ways you could use one slice of
- 20:10bread or two. There are so many different
- 20:13types of bread. I could be here for an hour
- 20:15listing them, but usually it's, you know, wheat or white, and
- 20:19then you have crunchy peanut butter, regular peanut butter.
- 20:23There's a million different brands.
- 20:25Everyone has their favorite and then you get into the types of
- 20:29jellies and jams and honey. And yes, for those of us sugar,
- 20:34there's like 1% of us. I don't even know if there's
- 20:37that many in the world who do it.
- 20:38I'd love to know if I'm the only one at this point.
- 20:41OK, I was raised by someone who was raised by someone who worked
- 20:45at a sugar factory. So she always said that's why.
- 20:49But I'm starting to think my mom is a She loves everything sweet.
- 20:52She has a crazy sweet tooth. I'm wondering if peanut butter
- 20:55just wasn't sweet enough for her that she's like let's just douse
- 20:58some sugar on this. But that is how I grew up.
- 21:01I don't know really other ways to eat it.
- 21:04But then you come into how you cut it.
- 21:06Do you cut it down the middle like me?
- 21:09I love 2 rectangles. That is the perfect way in my
- 21:12mind. My husband is a triangle guy and
- 21:15then my kids love 4 triangles. Everyone is different and there
- 21:20is no right or wrong way to eat a peanut butter sandwich.
- 21:25There's no right or wrong way to make it.
- 21:28You might want to throw a banana on there or some Nutella.
- 21:32The world is your oyster when it comes to peanut butter
- 21:34sandwiches. OK, you have a plethora of
- 21:38options and just because that is not how I would eat it does not
- 21:42mean it is not correct. And it has.
- 21:45It's honestly been a huge changing point in my life for
- 21:48how I look at everything, how I look at people who worship.
- 21:53Are they worshiping in the way I think they should or I do?
- 21:56Or is there a better way to praise God?
- 21:59I don't know. If you're on a mountain on a
- 22:01hike and you feel him there, good for you.
- 22:05If it's at a Pew in a church, that is great.
- 22:08If it's, well, listening to worship music, Hallelujah.
- 22:12Amen. There is no right or wrong way
- 22:15to do that. There is no right or wrong way
- 22:18to do the dishes. OK, you might like to hand wash
- 22:23every single dish. You might not believe in a
- 22:26dishwasher, or you might only believe in a dishwasher.
- 22:30You might not consider ever scrubbing a dish with a brush
- 22:34and some soap. Everyone is different.
- 22:36Everyone has their preferences and this goes for roommates in
- 22:41college or spouses or if you're living with family members and
- 22:46the way that they do it is different.
- 22:48Your way is not the only way. A few months ago, my in laws
- 22:53came to visit and my father-in-law loaded the
- 22:56dishwasher to help out. My husband had cooked all the
- 23:01food, so he was doing his part and he loaded the dishwasher and
- 23:05he was like so proud of it. And he's like, don't worry
- 23:07Hannah. I loaded the dishwasher and I
- 23:10look in the sink and there are still a lot of dishes in the
- 23:13sink. And I look in the dishwasher and
- 23:16there were like 10 dishes that were magically taking up the
- 23:19entire dishwasher. You guys, I can fit 50 dishes in
- 23:24a dishwasher if you give me a minute.
- 23:26It's like Jenga. My husband doesn't understand it
- 23:29but I was not about to insult my father-in-law by being like try
- 23:35again. Or I unload it and reload it the
- 23:39way I like it. There is no point.
- 23:42There is no right and wrong way. There are people that can be
- 23:47more efficient with loading dishwashers and there are people
- 23:51who are like 3 dishes. I'm going to start this.
- 23:54To each their own. However much your water bill
- 23:57costs. Good for you, but it's not worth
- 24:01making someone else feel less than just to make yourself feel
- 24:05like your way is the right way. Everyone else should just jump
- 24:10on board with how you do things. OK, That's not realistic.
- 24:15There's a million ways to do everything.
- 24:18There's a million ways to make a bed.
- 24:20OK, a bed. Some people don't like the top
- 24:23sheet. Some people don't know how to do
- 24:27hospital corners. OK, Yes, Mom, I'm talking to
- 24:30you. We don't don't care.
- 24:31We just tuck and fold, OK? We shove it under the mattress
- 24:36and just hope it doesn't come out.
- 24:38And then when we wake up and all of the sheets are in a ball on
- 24:41the bed, we just remake it every day, OK?
- 24:44There is no correct way to do what you're doing in your life
- 24:51as long as it's not illegal. And Kate, there are right and
- 24:53wrong things in life. I'm talking about very simple
- 24:57things here, people. Your way isn't the only way.
- 25:01Like the phrase my way or the highway.
- 25:04Why is that a mentality that we have?
- 25:06Why are we so obsessed with our way that we can't even
- 25:10comprehend that there may be a better way to do other things or
- 25:15there may be a less stressful way?
- 25:17Like, am I stressing myself out so much on how to make a peanut
- 25:22butter sandwich that I'm missing moments with my kids and they're
- 25:27just going to grow up being like, she's the crazy lady who's
- 25:29obsessed with how to make a sandwich?
- 25:31That's not important, OK? It's just not important.
- 25:36You might have done something one way your entire life, and
- 25:41then someone invites you to try it a tiny bit different and it's
- 25:45going to be uncomfortable. It's going to feel foreign.
- 25:48What if that new way is a better way?
- 25:51What if it's an easier way? What if it's more satisfying the
- 25:56way that someone else does something?
- 25:57But if you're just so stuck on how you do something that it has
- 26:02to be your way and it has to be perfect and it has to be right
- 26:06that you miss out on an option to try something that may change
- 26:10your life for the better. And I'm trying to have that
- 26:13mindset with this podcast. I have no idea where this will
- 26:17go. I have no idea who this will
- 26:20affect. It honestly might just be for me
- 26:23to help me find myself, my voice again, find a community of
- 26:29people who have been through this or who are going through
- 26:33this or who will one day go through this and this will be
- 26:35something they look to. And they're like, OK, I'm not
- 26:38the only person who's struggling at this phase of life.
- 26:42There is no right or wrong way. It's just different.
- 26:45And the moment we stop worrying about it being perfect, we can
- 26:51start to enjoy what is in front of us.
- 26:55So just remember, there is no right or wrong way to make a
- 26:58peanut butter sandwich. But the way you judge someone
- 27:02for how they make it says a lot about you and not about them.
