- 4:10what can I say right now? I am well supposed to have a guest
- 4:15and I was very excited from my hometown. But she's another show. So
- 4:19you guys, it's gonna be us tonight and I am going to be here
- 4:24and then I'm gonna give you some tips about preparing your child for back to
- 4:28school. Oh she's here. Well, we'll save those tips for next time,
- 4:33you guys. I am very excited to actually have an author from my
- 4:39hometown. Like hometown hometown, like over the bridge we might shop to seeing
- 4:44Walmart and stuff like that. She is a poet here from Charles to South
- 4:47Carolina and her name is Star the poet. I am so excited to have
- 4:54this young lady on with me tonight, and I am going to bring her
- 5:00on. Come on in, Star, Come on in, Come on in.
- 5:03Hi. I'm sorry, I was trying to log on but I had
- 5:09to go through Facebook and hog god stuff. I'm so sorry. It is
- 5:13okay, it's okay. You are here, and we're gonna ask you to
- 5:18go ahead and tell us about Star. Who is Star the poet? I
- 5:25am twenty two. Oh my name is Stardjan Hamilton's I'm twenty two. I'm
- 5:30from downtown Charleston. I went to Burke High School and I actually got my
- 5:36first book published while I was a junior at Burke High School. And I'm
- 5:42an author of The Hard Stage of a Smart Team and Speak Up. Yes,
- 5:47so you guys. I went to Garrett Academy. So we like,
- 5:51we're like, what two bridges between us, but we're all in this together,
- 5:58and it's exciting to finally let people know that Charleston people, we do
- 6:08read. But there's some odd reason every time I meet someone as African American
- 6:14and they say, oh, you read, it's like, yeah, oh,
- 6:15you must be from New York. No, you must be from Atlanta.
- 6:19No, I'm right here from Charles's auth Carolina. And the next thing
- 6:23they say is Charleston people read. So the lead to that you have a
- 6:29book that is called Speak Up. So in ten words, can you describe
- 6:34that book for someone who has never seen it before? It probably might be
- 6:41a little bit more for than ten words, I'm taking time. Take your
- 6:45time to describe Speak Up. Speak Up. It's just basically it's just basically
- 6:50like a book about people who are like fighting depression and anxiety, people who
- 6:57are trying to like find theirselfs let's see, like learning new experiences. Just
- 7:03really people who was like dealing with a lot of like going through like mental
- 7:06health problems. Like well I would I wouldn't even say mental health problems.
- 7:10I would say like like if you're just going through some type of mental experience,
- 7:14something like you have never experienced before, like you know that does book
- 7:19here is like a motivation to help you, you know, know that you're
- 7:24not alone. You know. That's basically what speak Up is about, and
- 7:27just you know, not holding anything in, you know, just talk to
- 7:30somebody, you know before your mind really gets attacked. Yes, So it
- 7:36it's like, um, I would say a conversation starter something that it's off
- 7:47subject off question. Do you feel that you write in the book was along
- 7:54the lines of your experiences or it's as it other people? Yeah, well
- 8:00I feel like what I went through, Um, like I dealt with like
- 8:03anxiety and panic attacks and I had never like dealt with that before. So
- 8:07I'm like like how and like why am I dealing with this? So while
- 8:11I was going through that, I knew like I was, I was writing
- 8:13some plot, I was writing poetry. But I'm like, okay, like
- 8:16where exactly am I going at with this? Like what is this going to
- 8:20be about? So, like every time I had some type of anxiety attack
- 8:26or panic I would just write down a poem of like how exactly my feeling.
- 8:30I would be very specific and like and I'll read it. I'd be
- 8:33like, I know somebody who like went through that, somebody already talked to
- 8:37me about feeling this way. But now that I get to feel it,
- 8:41so I get to really write down some hard feelings about it. So I'm
- 8:43just really trying to like motivate people, because that was something very hard to
- 8:48get out of, very hard, So writing help me. So you just
- 8:52brought the reader on the journey with you too. You can say your healing
- 8:58process in so many terms, yes, and that's great. I like those
- 9:05books because it can be that one point that will get you through. You
- 9:09might not be able to sit down and read an whole chapter, but you
- 9:13could take that one point, just like you could take that one Bible verse
- 9:16and it will get you through it. So I love books like that.
- 9:20But poetry. Why poetry, I don't know. It just was something that
- 9:30I was just meant to do. Like it was just something like when I
- 9:33was in eighth grade, like I wrote my first poem and I was like,
- 9:37you know what, like I'm gonna just keep going. So like as
- 9:39I as I kept going and just like it just kept getting better. So
- 9:43I'm like, this is something that I want to do. But I always
- 9:48wanted to be an author, but I didn't know if I want to be
- 9:50like a short story author, novel or whatever. And I wanted to do
- 9:54that like after I got out of high school, Like that's why I wanted
- 9:58to focus on But I mean, God the plans to me, and I
- 10:01made that happen while in school, so like that's just reading my passion.
- 10:05It's just something that I really love to do, Like I love poetry,
- 10:09and a lot of people ask me, like, you know, like do
- 10:13you read other people's poetry? And I'm like no, it's just something in
- 10:16me that I need other people like I don't. Let's not even want like
- 10:20I need them to read this because it's like a really big help and I'm
- 10:24young. Yeah, okay, okay, I can see that. So I'm
- 10:28gonna ask you an off script question. So are you a reader? Yeah,
- 10:35I am a reader. I like to read like like teenage books like
- 10:39I like, I don't know if you ever heard about like them, the
- 10:43blue Ford series, Like I don't read like all like I I like to
- 10:50read like off it's just app called walk Pad Like well, like a lot
- 10:54of people would they write stuff. So I wrote like a little short story
- 10:58on me about like a selate and like a lot of people was happening into
- 11:03it and I'm like, you know what, let me go ahead. But
- 11:05I end up losing the account and I couldn't. I never got to finish
- 11:09it, never got You're gonna have to find it. I do like way
- 11:15Pad, and the reason why I like wa Pad it's one of those um
- 11:20sites where you get that real, raw author energy, and I love those
- 11:26books. I love independent authors like yourself and the Reason Why because it is
- 11:31so real, it's so it's not doctored up, it's not uh change it
- 11:39everywhere, it's it's your work. I call it you guys, blood,
- 11:43sweat and tears. I love that. So before we take a break,
- 11:52what is the one takeaway you want someone to get from your book? One
- 12:01takeaway? It would be that you can you can do whatever you put your
- 12:07mind to, basically, like you can literally do anything, and you can
- 12:11do it while you're two years old. You can do like your fifty,
- 12:15you can do it like a hundred, you can do whatever. Like I
- 12:18just really want people to really like follow their dreams and just really know what
- 12:22your passion is, because everybody has a passion, believe it on Like,
- 12:26everybody has something in them, but some people are just scared to show it.
- 12:31And I was really nervous to like show it at first, but as
- 12:35I got better and better, I'm like, yeah, I'm just I'm just
- 12:39really trying to be like that that young mortivator, and I just won't be
- 12:45like an inspiration to like the youth mainly. Okay, okay, Well,
- 12:50before we go, we have a question for you. So a fellow author
- 12:54would like to know what type of poetry are you comfortable with writing. I'm
- 13:01comfortable writing just like real experiences. Like I don't write like, um,
- 13:05explicit things, so like it's really as scid friendly, adult friendly. It's
- 13:09friendly to everybody to read. Like I go to like elementary schools and high
- 13:11schools and I share my poems, so it's just really friendly. But um,
- 13:18maybe like over time able to get more like adulters. But now I'm
- 13:22just like I'm just like on that everybody friendly level and I just really like
- 13:28to write about, um, real personal experiences. Oh so it seems like
- 13:33you got that like what we call the book club book, so anybody can
- 13:37pick it up and they could read it. Yeah, which is a great
- 13:39thing. So you guys, we're gonna take a break and we're gonna find
- 13:41out some more about Ms. Starr, the poet right here from Charleston.
- 13:46You guys just don't understand how happy I am to shoot from Charleston. But
- 13:50we're gonna take a break and we'll be right back. You guys, tell
- 13:56you we have no to three Eastern Standard time because every Tuesday. Are you
- 14:05ready to tell someone to walk into their tree and join the Queen? Preserve
- 14:13your spot today only seven soul shore as I take your head and lead you
- 14:33to That's blow. It's the music dies. Something two will be dropping between
- 14:41July thirty first in August seventh. You can still join us in book three,
- 14:46Finding Love, dropping in December only thirteen thirteen to join Seeking thirty poets.
- 14:52Very of the Word is my strength. I found love, peace,
- 14:56joy and hope in the Word of God. I found me and hope for
- 15:00tomorrow. We are allowing our words to speak to the nation. Authors,
- 15:07here's your chance to get to your work seen across the world. Be a
- 15:13part about fifty united authors of aspiring authors. Here's your chance to have your
- 15:20book, you and your work to the broadcast through Alex the World. Yeah,
- 15:28say his name, mister Cornell. Jackie Drummer, wrongfully incarcerated over thirty
- 15:33years. Justice for mister Drummer. Free mister Drummer. We are back.
- 15:43We are back with Star and so we're going to talk about the author aspect
- 15:52of everything. Now. So we've talked a little bit about your book.
- 15:54So as an author, what do you feel is your best, um marketing,
- 16:00aren't you great? Do you feel that social media is the way for
- 16:04you to go or do you feel that face to face or poetry Nights or
- 16:10something like that. So how do you actual, let's simpolize the question,
- 16:14how do you market your books? Um? I marketed on social media,
- 16:22meaning like on my Facebook story, y'all like posts some my poetry. You're
- 16:27like, if I'm feeling a certain way, I'll be like, okay,
- 16:30let me just post this one. So mainly like social media, but and
- 16:34then like what that Like some people who I don't even know, they'll be
- 16:37like, oh, I know you all Facebook, you know you. It'll
- 16:40be like you your frank are you tough to though you don't want to write
- 16:42the books? And I'll be like yeah, yeah. So social media has
- 16:45gotten me um very far because like a lot of people are starting to notice
- 16:51me and I don't even know who these people are. But so that means
- 16:56that your work is actually touch at somebody. So kudos to your Kudos to
- 17:02you. So when you're writing as an author, do you feel after you
- 17:07work write your point? Do you feel energized or do you feel exhausted or
- 17:14do you even feel relieved. Like what at the writing how how are you
- 17:18feeling? Um, I would say I feel relieved because, um like writing,
- 17:26that's a good thing to do. Like a lot of people they're like
- 17:27do like journalist and stuff like that. So I started off like journalist.
- 17:33I would always write like how my day was at school and stuff like that.
- 17:36But like as I got into poetry, I just was I noticed how
- 17:41a creative I was with it. So I was like, you know,
- 17:44as as as way more to it than just like writing a poem, because
- 17:48you know, and me personally, I like to write like at nighttime,
- 17:52I want my room to be dark, you know what, like a little
- 17:53bit of light, because that's when your thoughts are just going and I just
- 17:57I just let it all flow whatever is my mind. I just write it
- 18:00down. So I really do feel relieved and I feel like, oh yeah,
- 18:06like I'll be like dust the mom right here. That's the one.
- 18:08That's the one. Yeah, really and very exciting. It seems like he
- 18:15said, a whole atmosphere when it comes down to your writing. Yeah,
- 18:19yeah, is there music involved? Is there like that one artist that you
- 18:23could put it on and everything flows or you like complete silence? Um,
- 18:30well, like both because like I'm I'm like a really huge well my my
- 18:36inspiration is believe it a lot, but I really do UM love Chris Brown.
- 18:42Yeah yeah, I really do. And it's a lot of people that
- 18:47I don't buy. You know, here's an inspiration to me because it's like
- 18:52sometimes I feel like we're kind of going through the same thing. Just what
- 18:53like the music he put I would be like, man, I going through
- 18:56that too. Like It'll just be like certain things. So like sometimes I'll
- 19:02listen to his music and I'll just get into that that mood and that mood
- 19:06to be like okay, like that's how I'm feeling like and then it'll be
- 19:10certain things that he may say, but I'll like switch it up and then
- 19:14like I'll use it. Like you know that that's a part of being creative
- 19:18too, So you know that that helps me a lot because sometimes I do
- 19:22need silence. I just need to be by myself just to do what I
- 19:26gotta do. But music and silence helps either way, a good poem comes
- 19:30out of it. Okay, Well, you have another UM audience question,
- 19:36and that question was what author inspired what poet? Not an author, but
- 19:41what poet inspiracy? Um, it's a that's not like a famous poet,
- 19:48but she's from down here. Her name is Christine Washington. She's um,
- 19:55she's an author from you know, Charleston, South Carolina. And she is
- 20:00like a huge inswiration to me too, because, like I was, I
- 20:04would always see her like publishing these books and I'm like how, like I
- 20:08never knew how it was possible. I'm like, you know, like what
- 20:11does she have to go through her? And like she would. I remember,
- 20:14um, my little cousin passed away in a car accident in twenty sixteen,
- 20:18and I remember like she came to like the candle light in and she
- 20:22did like this poem and I was like, I was interested. I was
- 20:26like, you know at this point like bump being sad, like I was
- 20:30all eyes on her and I was like like how does she just split it
- 20:33out like that? And like that? Oh that was like a huge inspiration
- 20:38and I'm like I want to be like like I seriously want to be like
- 20:42her. Like so she's like a really really really huge inswiration to me,
- 20:48and she always keeps me involved, like she does a lot of players based
- 20:52off her books, and she makes sure that I'm like the mean character,
- 20:56like she like I love her, and she was like a really really really
- 21:00huge inspiration. And she also helped me with my first and my second book.
- 21:06Like we don't go through the editor and we go through everything again.
- 21:07I'm like listening, when I get famous, we canna be famous together.
- 21:12Yes, Christine, Christine, Her and Georgia Nubia, those two right there.
- 21:22I always wait for them to drop something. I'm always looking at things.
- 21:26I love their work. Um, oh I met Georgia. I met
- 21:30Georgia. She had a she had a poet, uh slam at the page
- 21:38seven barn girl, and I was there that miss who I was up in
- 21:42there, So I met her. Yeah, I met her too. Yeah,
- 21:47that's my little off subject. That's my baby girls. Oh, that's
- 21:52her teacher. That's nobody else teacher about her teacher, her Miss Georgia.
- 21:56Yea, but I have another you have questions coming through girl. Have you
- 22:02been heared bringing all that question? Have you ever considered writing in a different
- 22:10genre? Yes, So spoiler alert, my third book is going to actually
- 22:18be a children's book. So I'm gonna I'm trying to move on up,
- 22:22you know with like after the children's going to like short stories and like you
- 22:26know, like teenage stories stuff like that. I want to actually write a
- 22:30book like a short story like about myself out like with different characters and stuff
- 22:36like that. So, um yeah, I'm working on the children's book right
- 22:41now as we speak, and I'm gonna let my little sister m Levy.
- 22:45I'm gonna let her illustrate it because she's a very very very good illustrated and
- 22:48I know the kids would love to see it. You see, that's what's
- 22:52up. Y'all heard it here first, nowhere else like here on that see
- 22:56book out. So she got a third book and it's for the little little
- 23:00people. So we have about three minutes. What would you like to say
- 23:07to your readers. You're new readers, you're new new readers and people that
- 23:15are just getting to know you. Um, what I would like to say
- 23:22is make sure you go on Amazon and purchase speed Up at a hard stage
- 23:27of a smart teams on Amazon. All you have to do is just,
- 23:32um, you know, search up my name and it'll show up. Um.
- 23:37I mean, if you're in a Chauston area, I do have them
- 23:40on hand. I just want to tell everybody you know, we do got
- 23:44the children's book coming next, you know it's coming soon. Um. You
- 23:48know, I just want to really motivate everybody to really like follow your dreams,
- 23:56just follow your passion and follow your heart. Like if you you can
- 24:00do anything you want, literally anything in it can be at any time.
- 24:04You know, it just has to be. You just gotta put your work
- 24:07in and you know you gotta do what you gotta do, you know.
- 24:11So I just really really really really really want everybody to just focus, just
- 24:18focus. You know, sometimes the devil was going to try to distract you
- 24:21and get into your mind. But praying and praying and praying like that really
- 24:26really really helps. And you know, I write some really good poems,
- 24:32so you know, y'all should really check it out, like I'm telling you,
- 24:36and like I'm like the doubts, they're like really really really love it
- 24:40because they be like like there's no way, like your mind is just that
- 24:42ahead. So you know, I just want everybody to just follow their dreams
- 24:48and just do what they gotta do, because tomorrow it could be you.
- 24:53You can be shining, you can be on top everything. And my name
- 25:00as a star for a reason, Like a lot of people tell me that
- 25:03all the time. So I believe that I'm a start, and a lot
- 25:06of people does believe it too, So I'm going to keep that going.
- 25:08You are, girl, You are because you got a question out here saying
- 25:12how can we follow you and where to get your books? Oh yeah,
- 25:18my books are on Amazon. Um. You can follow me on Facebook at
