- 0:07Speaker 1: The plan for the Padres rotation after officially signing Michael King,
- 0:12Speaker 1: and we have your first ever Padres mail bag. Hi everybody,
- 0:16Speaker 1: I am Marty Kaswell. That is Kyle Glazer here on
- 0:19Speaker 1: Friar Territory. We are part of the Foul Territory networking boy.
- 0:23Speaker 1: We have a lot to get to before we jump
- 0:26Speaker 1: into the holidays. Kyle, how are you today doing?
- 0:28Speaker 2: All right? Marty? We've seen the Padres get a little
- 0:31Speaker 2: busier here toward the end of the year, and as
- 0:33Speaker 2: we've discussed, this is around the time AJ Preller and
- 0:36Speaker 2: everyone involved really starts to get cooking. You'll remember, of course,
- 0:39Speaker 2: the big U Darvis trade after the twenty twenty season
- 0:42Speaker 2: right after Christmas, followed by the Blake Snow trade the
- 0:45Speaker 2: Joe Musgrove trade. So I'm sure that while most of
- 0:48Speaker 2: us will be relaxing over the holidays, inevitably I feel
- 0:51Speaker 2: like we're definitely going to get an email or a
- 0:53Speaker 2: text or breaking you know, tweet about a big trade
- 0:56Speaker 2: going down on December twenty eighth. I've got like at
- 0:58Speaker 2: least five to one odds on.
- 1:00Speaker 1: That wonderful Okay, just so you know, when we were
- 1:03Speaker 1: at Michael King's press or was it last week? On
- 1:06Speaker 1: Friday I corndered to J Preller afterwards, I said, listen,
- 1:10Speaker 1: can you give us a little bit of a break.
- 1:12Speaker 1: You are you going home for the holidays?
- 1:13Speaker 2: You know?
- 1:13Speaker 1: Are you going back to New York to go see
- 1:15Speaker 1: your family? Can you just can you give us some
- 1:18Speaker 1: time off? Can you give us a break? And he
- 1:20Speaker 1: refused to answer that question. So I completely agree with you.
- 1:23Speaker 1: All the media, if you cover the San Diagopogis, if
- 1:25Speaker 1: you cover J Preler, make sure that you keep your
- 1:27Speaker 1: alerts on, identifications on, bring your laptops, bring your microphones,
- 1:31Speaker 1: because I have no doubt there is something cooking. So
- 1:34Speaker 1: we'll see, we'll see that, we'll get there. But yeah,
- 1:36Speaker 1: you're right, December twenty second. I just feel like there's
- 1:39Speaker 1: more to come. I don't think it's going to be
- 1:41Speaker 1: a quiet off season into the new year, because that's
- 1:43Speaker 1: not how a J.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Prewler operates. So we'll see.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Definitely not. But we have a lot more to talk
- 1:48Speaker 2: about in terms of what's to come. But like you mentioned,
- 1:50Speaker 2: I'm very excited. We have our holiday mail bag. We
- 1:52Speaker 2: did a mail bag Heath Bell and I back earlier
- 1:55Speaker 2: this season. But it's one of those things. With so
- 1:57Speaker 2: much happening with the podres, we didn't get a chance
- 1:59Speaker 2: to really do them as frequently as we'd like. So
- 2:02Speaker 2: this is our Christmas gift to you watchers and listeners,
- 2:04Speaker 2: our first holiday mail bag with Marty Caswell. I'm going
- 2:07Speaker 2: to go ahead and get us started with our first question,
- 2:09Speaker 2: John Gordon, loyal listener, always appreciate John's engaging with us.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Do you believe Scheldt was the reason Campusano didn't get
- 2:17Speaker 2: a fair chance at AB's in twenty five and will
- 2:20Speaker 2: that change now that he's gone? Marty, you and I
- 2:23Speaker 2: talked a lot about Louise Campasano, the lack of opportunity
- 2:26Speaker 2: and consistent at bats. I know my thoughts and conversations
- 2:30Speaker 2: I've had about this. Where are you on this in
- 2:32Speaker 2: terms of how much of it was a product of
- 2:34Speaker 2: Mike Schild.
- 2:35Speaker 1: I don't think that Campusan. I don't think Mike Schilt
- 2:39Speaker 1: wanted to play him. I don't think he wanted any
- 2:41Speaker 1: part of Louise Campasano. I think this is something that
- 2:44Speaker 1: wasn't just about Mike Schilt. I think that was also
- 2:45Speaker 1: an issue with with Bob Melvin, who, by the way,
- 2:48Speaker 1: a former catcher if anyone give the most of a catcher,
- 2:50Speaker 1: it might be Bob Melvin. I think there were some
- 2:52Speaker 1: frustrations with the pitching staff as well. And I'm just
- 2:55Speaker 1: thinking of a comment that Mike Shilt made at Rigby
- 2:58Speaker 1: Field right when the Padres postseasonsters came out and he
- 3:01Speaker 1: was asked about Louis Campasano, and he made it very
- 3:03Speaker 1: clear that the only reason that he was on that
- 3:06Speaker 1: team with the Padres was because this was all Aj
- 3:09Speaker 1: Preller's decision.
- 3:10Speaker 3: He made sure everyone knew.
- 3:12Speaker 1: I want no part of Louis Campusano, and I don't
- 3:15Speaker 1: think that that was lost on Campi as well.
- 3:17Speaker 3: I think he was very, very frustrated.
- 3:19Speaker 1: I think that he would rather he he was much
- 3:23Speaker 1: happier getting at bats, regular at bats for El Paso,
- 3:26Speaker 1: for the Chihuauas than he was just sitting riding on
- 3:28Speaker 1: the bench with the Padres. So I do think that
- 3:32Speaker 1: there was an internal struggle back and forth with Preller
- 3:35Speaker 1: and Mike Schildt on Luis Campusano.
- 3:36Speaker 3: How about you, Kyle.
- 3:38Speaker 2: I mean, I had this conversation with a few Padres
- 3:40Speaker 2: front offs officials how in the front office they wanted
- 3:44Speaker 2: Louis Campusano to be up and playing You'll remember when
- 3:46Speaker 2: Martin Maldonado and alisdas were just struggling so so so,
- 3:51Speaker 2: so so so bad, to the point it was hurting
- 3:54Speaker 2: the Padres game in the game out, and there were
- 3:56Speaker 2: a lot of people in the front office who said, look,
- 3:58Speaker 2: Louis campus we understand Louis Campussano's defensive limitations, but we
- 4:03Speaker 2: can't have this anymore. And Mike Shilt was the one
- 4:05Speaker 2: who pushed back against it. He wanted those veteran catchers
- 4:08Speaker 2: leading his pitching staff and didn't care what they were
- 4:09Speaker 2: doing offensively. So yes, the reason Louis Campusano. If the
- 4:13Speaker 2: front office had had its way, Louise Campasano would have
- 4:16Speaker 2: been up and playing earlier this season than he was
- 4:19Speaker 2: then he was. In reality, he didn't play much when
- 4:21Speaker 2: he did come up. That said, as you alluded to,
- 4:26Speaker 2: it's not just a Mike Shilt thing. There have been
- 4:28Speaker 2: three managers in a row now, Jase Tayler, Bob Melvin,
- 4:31Speaker 2: Mike Schilt who just have not really trusted him behind
- 4:34Speaker 2: the plate. You know. Bob Melvin I thought was interesting.
- 4:37Speaker 2: The end of twenty twenty three, after the season was gone,
- 4:40Speaker 2: we saw al Louis Capissano hit and develop a little
- 4:43Speaker 2: bit of a rapport with Joe Musgrove. He got a
- 4:44Speaker 2: little bit of shot there. But you'll remember Louis Campussano
- 4:47Speaker 2: did go into twenty twenty four as the Potters starting
- 4:50Speaker 2: catcher and lost the job. Kyle Goshioch eventually took over
- 4:53Speaker 2: and that was that. So yes, Mike Shilt did not
- 4:57Speaker 2: trust a Louis Capissano behind the plate and did not
- 4:59Speaker 2: trust to met the plate either, did not want to
- 5:01Speaker 2: play him. But it's not uniquely in Mike Schulp thing.
- 5:04Speaker 2: This is where I've gone back to this a lot. Look,
- 5:05Speaker 2: Louis Campusano physically, he can hit everyone in grease. He
- 5:09Speaker 2: can hit defensively. There have always been questions about the receiving,
- 5:13Speaker 2: but the bigger issue is the intangibles teams want from
- 5:15Speaker 2: their catchers, the maturity, the pois, the leadership. It just
- 5:19Speaker 2: hasn't been there. So again, reportedly it got better last year. Again,
- 5:25Speaker 2: we need to see it happen in the majors. But
- 5:27Speaker 2: if nothing else, I've said this for a while now,
- 5:30Speaker 2: there's no reason for him not beginning every day dh
- 5:33Speaker 2: at bats understanding the doubts even managers and onfield personnel
- 5:38Speaker 2: have about him. Catching. It's not a fan thing, it's
- 5:40Speaker 2: the people on the field who question it. He can
- 5:43Speaker 2: hit and he just needs a shot at every day
- 5:45Speaker 2: at bats and it's tough for a young player to
- 5:46Speaker 2: come up and be a DH but that's the role
- 5:49Speaker 2: that fits him best, and hopefully Craig Stammon will give
- 5:53Speaker 2: him that opportunity. Just given the Potters' needs for offense
- 5:56Speaker 2: and power which Campisano can provide.
- 5:59Speaker 3: You think about the commercy.
- 6:00Speaker 1: What took the Padres down last year, just the offense
- 6:03Speaker 1: going down, the lack of slug and perhaps Kyle Glazer,
- 6:06Speaker 1: just perhaps if they had given Campy a true opportunity
- 6:10Speaker 1: in that season to once and for all show us
- 6:12Speaker 1: what you've got, maybe they don't make the wildly your
- 6:15Speaker 1: unpopular trade for Freddie for me and giving up some young, young,
- 6:20Speaker 1: controllable pictures and Steph Koleg and Weinberger.
- 6:22Speaker 3: Maybe it's whole different conversation.
- 6:23Speaker 1: I know it's a lot to put on that, but
- 6:25Speaker 1: I'm just thinking that's the ultimate what if.
- 6:28Speaker 2: And again, I think you probably still wanted to acquire
- 6:33Speaker 2: an everyday catcher. You felt okay giving every day bese
- 6:36Speaker 2: to and working with your pictures behind the plate Campasana
- 6:40Speaker 2: wasn't really going to be the solution behind the plate.
- 6:43Speaker 2: He was more of a solution for the lineup if
- 6:46Speaker 2: he got every day at bats. And when he got
- 6:47Speaker 2: brought up and moves up for three weeks and got
- 6:50Speaker 2: about five at bats sprinkled across three weeks, I mean,
- 6:52Speaker 2: no one's going to be successful.
- 6:53Speaker 3: Now.
- 6:54Speaker 2: I think the number is actually ten at bats. No
- 6:55Speaker 2: one in baseball be successful with that. So we'll see
- 6:58Speaker 2: what happens again the Potter's resigned him, maybe new you know,
- 7:02Speaker 2: new manager and new coaching staff, new outlook. Will see
- 7:04Speaker 2: what changes. But to answer the question, yes, Shilt was
- 7:08Speaker 2: a big part of the reason why Campusano was not
- 7:10Speaker 2: called up, but he is not alone in the history
- 7:12Speaker 2: of Potter's managers being resistant to giving him a regular
- 7:15Speaker 2: playing time, especially.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Behind the play I'm just thinking the padres d'afing real quick.
- 7:19Speaker 1: I'm just thinking the padres like Dfade Martine Maldonado, and
- 7:22Speaker 1: they brought him up. They brought him up in Chicago
- 7:25Speaker 1: because they because Mike Shilt would do anything to not
- 7:28Speaker 1: play well well.
- 7:31Speaker 2: The other thing, and this is where you talk about
- 7:32Speaker 2: where this resistance and I shouldn't say resistance. Campusano's defensive
- 7:36Speaker 2: shortcomings have forced the Potters into making moves they shouldn't
- 7:39Speaker 2: have made, you know, the big one. No one talks
- 7:41Speaker 2: about the twenty twenty two trade deadline. Of course, they
- 7:45Speaker 2: acquire Josh Hayter, they acquire one Soto, it's a huge windfall.
- 7:49Speaker 2: They made one trade at the very end for a
- 7:51Speaker 2: third catcher because they did not trust Les Campissana behind
- 7:54Speaker 2: the plate. The Potterys traded Brent Rooker for Cam Gallagher.
- 8:00Speaker 2: They wanted Gallagher as a third catcher, and with it
- 8:03Speaker 2: Gayway Brent Rooker, who as we know was eventually a
- 8:05Speaker 2: late bloomer. Talk about guys with slug who could have
- 8:07Speaker 2: eventually helped the Potters if he'd gotten the shot. So again,
- 8:12Speaker 2: I think, realistically, yes, the Potters need to find a
- 8:16Speaker 2: way to do something here and not keep making moves
- 8:18Speaker 2: that ultimately cost them good talent that can help them.
- 8:23Speaker 2: Just to try and fix this catching situation, whether it's
- 8:26Speaker 2: a backup or third catcher. All right, moving on to
- 8:29Speaker 2: question two, Okay from bow Bow is the postseason more
- 8:33Speaker 2: luck Brewers, Phillies and Yankees won more games, holden field advantage,
- 8:37Speaker 2: more home runs, shuffle lineup cards, Brewers most wins swept
- 8:40Speaker 2: Dodgers regular season changes, lineup card, Murphy referring to Pat
- 8:44Speaker 2: Murphy more relaxed Kinder manager to press coaching staff swept
- 8:47Speaker 2: by Dodgers in postseason. Marsling actually studied a lot and
- 8:51Speaker 2: wrote a lot about during my time at Baseball America.
- 8:53Speaker 2: But you know, just again, you your experience covering this
- 8:57Speaker 2: game for as long as you have, what are your
- 8:58Speaker 2: thoughts on it?
- 9:00Speaker 1: I don't think post there's a little bit of luck involved,
- 9:02Speaker 1: but there's I think health is the biggest thing. Health
- 9:04Speaker 1: and the depth of your pitching staff and just the
- 9:07Speaker 1: hot team, the hot hand. The Padres didn't have any
- 9:10Speaker 1: of those things going into Chicago, major questions about their pitching,
- 9:13Speaker 1: and they're oftense picked the wrong time to go into
- 9:16Speaker 1: a slump.
- 9:16Speaker 3: So I don't think.
- 9:18Speaker 1: And by the way, I love the part about the
- 9:20Speaker 1: press conference and the Kinder manager and I know Pat
- 9:23Speaker 1: Murphy care you know, pizzas in his back pocket, and
- 9:26Speaker 1: they had a fun little story and he story told.
- 9:28Speaker 3: But that's not the reason why.
- 9:29Speaker 1: That's not the reason why the Brewers were bounced or
- 9:32Speaker 1: the Padres failed.
- 9:34Speaker 2: Yeah, so there's a lot to unpack here. So I
- 9:36Speaker 2: want to start with a few things, right, some of
- 9:38Speaker 2: it semantics. Luck has always bothered me because when people
- 9:41Speaker 2: refer to what takes place as luck, it takes away
- 9:44Speaker 2: from the performance of the players. From the players who
- 9:46Speaker 2: go out and do their jobs and execute a high
- 9:48Speaker 2: level and ultimately beat they're really really good counterparts, you know.
- 9:52Speaker 2: I think back to the Ties. The Diamondbacks went in
- 9:54Speaker 2: and beat the Dodgers, swept them, and everyone's like, oh,
- 9:57Speaker 2: it's just luck. No, I covered the tooth. The Diamondbacks
- 9:59Speaker 2: came out and beat hell out of the Dodgers. Their
- 10:01Speaker 2: offense went to work on that pitching staff. Give the
- 10:04Speaker 2: Diamondbacks credit. Wasn't luck they want they beat them. So
- 10:08Speaker 2: I think it's one of those situations where I think
- 10:09Speaker 2: it's important to give credit to teams for going out
- 10:12Speaker 2: and doing their jobs and exec a high level. That
- 10:15Speaker 2: is work, that is talent, that's performance, that's not luck.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Where the luck comes into it is. Yeah, injuries were
- 10:21Speaker 2: a big part of it, right, Sometimes guys just I mean,
- 10:24Speaker 2: freak things happen, Guys going down at the wrong time. Yeah,
- 10:27Speaker 2: that's the luck portion of it. And this thing we
- 10:29Speaker 2: talked a lot about I wrote a lot about this
- 10:31Speaker 2: during my time. Baseball America studied extensively. There are things
- 10:36Speaker 2: teams can do to put themselves in the best position
- 10:38Speaker 2: to win in the postseason where it's not completely luck.
- 10:40Speaker 2: First and foremost, you have to be top half of
- 10:43Speaker 2: Major League Baseball and payroll to win in World Series period.
- 10:46Speaker 2: We've studied this extensively since nineteen ninety two. The only
- 10:49Speaker 2: team that wasn't to do it was the two thousand
- 10:50Speaker 2: and three Marlins. As much as we talk about efficiency
- 10:53Speaker 2: and dollars per war, all on and on, not, the
- 10:56Speaker 2: fact of the matter is to acquire both the stars
- 11:00Speaker 2: and depth needed to win a World Series costs money period,
- 11:04Speaker 2: end of discussion. We can talk about all we want
- 11:06Speaker 2: about these small market teams, the Rays, the Brewers, you know,
- 11:08Speaker 2: the A's when they were competitive, They're not going to
- 11:12Speaker 2: win because they're not spending enough money. It's that simple.
- 11:14Speaker 2: So that's first and foremost. Secondly, you have to have
- 11:17Speaker 2: an offense that's top ten and run scored eleven years
- 11:19Speaker 2: in a row. Now, you have to be able to
- 11:21Speaker 2: score and score a lot to win. It's not just
- 11:23Speaker 2: about pitching. You have to be balanced. We've also seen
- 11:26Speaker 2: the last six years, you have to be top five
- 11:27Speaker 2: in the majors in home runs and this one's a
- 11:28Speaker 2: little bit of a looser correlation, but still all these things.
- 11:32Speaker 2: So again, does this mean that every team that's top
- 11:35Speaker 2: half in payroll and is top ten the majors and
- 11:38Speaker 2: scoring is going to win a World Series? Of course not.
- 11:40Speaker 2: But the World Series winners will come from the pool
- 11:43Speaker 2: of teams who are that, and we see that consistently.
- 11:45Speaker 2: So there are certain elements of your team that you
- 11:50Speaker 2: have to have, and the teams that have that, that's
- 11:53Speaker 2: the pool of teams that win a World Series. So yes,
- 11:57Speaker 2: there's an element of luck involved, but you also need
- 11:59Speaker 2: to have certain check there's certain boxes you have to
- 12:02Speaker 2: check to really be a World Series contender, and we
- 12:05Speaker 2: see that year after year after hear that who wins thinking.
- 12:08Speaker 1: So much of last year that it's the complete lack
- 12:10Speaker 1: of flug that did the Padres in in the postseason.
- 12:12Speaker 1: I know that, Mike Schuld and listen, you need to execute,
- 12:15Speaker 1: you need to go hinder the little things.
- 12:16Speaker 3: Right, correct.
- 12:17Speaker 1: But and Sheill used to love talking about the power
- 12:20Speaker 1: of friendship innings. That's not gonna get you far man,
- 12:22Speaker 1: when you're playing a team that can mash and has
- 12:24Speaker 1: some pitching.
- 12:25Speaker 2: So yes and no, right, because it's both. So I
- 12:27Speaker 2: want to be clear. I've talked about how teams need
- 12:29Speaker 2: to be top five majors in home runs, but I
- 12:32Speaker 2: need to go back and look at my study. It's
- 12:34Speaker 2: in one of my files here, but I believe it's
- 12:35Speaker 2: eleven of the last fifteen World Series champions were also
- 12:38Speaker 2: top ten the majors and hits. So it's both. You
- 12:40Speaker 2: have to hit for average and power. People talk about
- 12:42Speaker 2: this trade off when you look at the teams that win,
- 12:44Speaker 2: it's both. You have to be good at both. And again, yes,
- 12:47Speaker 2: the Potters lack slug. They were also eighteenth in the
- 12:50Speaker 2: majors and run scored and have won the lowest on
- 12:52Speaker 2: base percentage in baseball. So this was an offense that
- 12:54Speaker 2: was just not good enough independent of just the slug.
- 12:58Speaker 2: I mean, there are a lot of elements here. They
- 13:00Speaker 2: not Early in the season we saw them being able
- 13:02Speaker 2: to manufacture runs and score it. They stopped doing that.
- 13:04Speaker 2: They stopped running the bases aggressively, they stopped coming up
- 13:07Speaker 2: with good situational heading. So you know, in terms of
- 13:09Speaker 2: what did them then, I mean, I before the series
- 13:12Speaker 2: of mistart, I said, yeah, the Cubs are going to
- 13:13Speaker 2: win this series in three games. The Potters are terrible
- 13:15Speaker 2: on the road, which again is another factor to be
- 13:17Speaker 2: You have to have a winning record on the road
- 13:19Speaker 2: to be a World Series winner. We've seen that for
- 13:20Speaker 2: fifteen years in a row, and the office just wasn't
- 13:23Speaker 2: good enough. Realistically, this was a the Cubs were the
- 13:25Speaker 2: better team, they were at home. They just beat the Potters.
- 13:28Speaker 2: This wasn't a Potterish you know, the Potterish shortcomings weren't new.
- 13:32Speaker 2: The Cubs were the better team and they beat them.
- 13:34Speaker 2: So again, I think overall, just to kind of wrap
- 13:37Speaker 2: up because I'm monologuing way too long, there are things
- 13:40Speaker 2: you have to have in place to be a World
- 13:42Speaker 2: Series contender. It's not just luck, like I feel like
- 13:45Speaker 2: some people like to randomly assign it, which is not correct.
- 13:49Speaker 1: So anymore for any more for the mail back, and
- 13:51Speaker 1: I do want to mention if you have any more questions,
- 13:53Speaker 1: even I don't think we have any more shows this week,
- 13:56Speaker 1: but any any questions you guys have, send them to
- 13:58Speaker 1: us at prior to dratory at Marty Caswell, Kyle Blazer,
- 14:02Speaker 1: and we will answer your questions on the next one
- 14:05Speaker 1: on the on the next show.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Absolutely all right. Last and final question this one from
- 14:09Speaker 2: Clippers SD lovely throwback, love the old logo. There. Who
- 14:13Speaker 2: plays first base to the Potters next season? Marty. We've
- 14:15Speaker 2: talked about this right now. It's Gavin Sheets, and even
- 14:18Speaker 2: though he struggled at times at first base last year,
- 14:21Speaker 2: he is a first baseman by trade. If you give him,
- 14:24Speaker 2: you know, every day reps over there, he can play
- 14:27Speaker 2: the position.
- 14:28Speaker 1: I know Manny Machado made a case for having Ryan
- 14:30Speaker 1: or Hearn back. I don't know if that's going to
- 14:31Speaker 1: be possible. I think it could still be Jake conin fourth.
- 14:35Speaker 1: I don't know that they're going to move him. I
- 14:37Speaker 1: know we've spent endless time talking about the idea of
- 14:40Speaker 1: trading Drake Cornenworth, given his salary and given teams looking
- 14:43Speaker 1: for such a versatile player. But it wouldn't surprise me
- 14:46Speaker 1: if Cronenworth is back with the Padres and he is
- 14:49Speaker 1: your first baseman moving forward.
- 14:51Speaker 3: Where do you think, Kyle?
- 14:53Speaker 2: I think that would be the least optimal situation, just
- 14:56Speaker 2: because we've talked about the Potters needing to add offensive
- 14:59Speaker 2: stump and the best way to do that is to
- 15:01Speaker 2: bring in another first basement or if Sheets is your
- 15:04Speaker 2: first baseman, you know, create every day at bats for
- 15:06Speaker 2: at least Campusano DH. Really the optimal outcome would be
- 15:09Speaker 2: they bring in another first baseman who can who can
- 15:12Speaker 2: really thump. You know, if Jake Corona Work moves to
- 15:14Speaker 2: first base, okay, then your second basement right now it
- 15:17Speaker 2: might be Sun Moon Song, who are not sure is
- 15:19Speaker 2: in every player? It doesn't really solve your power problem.
- 15:22Speaker 2: So I think realistically the best situation for the Potter is,
- 15:26Speaker 2: given their current roster, would be Sheets as your everyday
- 15:29Speaker 2: first baseman, campus On is your DH. But the best
- 15:32Speaker 2: possible outcome would be for them to make an addition.
- 15:34Speaker 2: And that's where we've talked all about their payroll situation.
- 15:38Speaker 2: With the Michael King signing with the Sung Win Song signing,
- 15:41Speaker 2: fangrafts Now has the Potters projected payroll at two hundred
- 15:44Speaker 2: and twenty million dollars this year, last year a two
- 15:47Speaker 2: hundred and eleven million. Again, the numbers are living and
- 15:50Speaker 2: you go to Cots Baseball contracts, they have this year
- 15:52Speaker 2: two hundred and fourteen million, last year two hundred and
- 15:54Speaker 2: eight million. So but the overall ballpark is the Potters
- 15:57Speaker 2: right now are about six to eight million dollars depending
- 15:59Speaker 2: on your source, over last year's payroll, and they've said
- 16:02Speaker 2: they're going to try and keep their payroll to the
- 16:05Speaker 2: same level as last year. So for them to make
- 16:07Speaker 2: they're already over and to make more additions again unless
- 16:11Speaker 2: they surprisingly boost payroll, which is always a possibility, but
- 16:14Speaker 2: it's unlikely given that they're exploring a sale. They would
- 16:18Speaker 2: have to move someone, they'd have to move some salary
- 16:20Speaker 2: to go make an acquisition.
- 16:22Speaker 3: You still think Jay Crenilworth is the most likely to
- 16:24Speaker 3: be moved.
- 16:25Speaker 2: I do, just looking at the salary, looking at you know,
- 16:28Speaker 2: what the Potters can maybe do to kind of find
- 16:31Speaker 2: some different options. But again, nothing's out of the question
- 16:34Speaker 2: when it comes to AJ Preller. We know this. Nothing
- 16:38Speaker 2: is ever out of the question.
- 16:39Speaker 3: You're exactly right.
- 16:40Speaker 1: And I know we spent a lot of time last
- 16:42Speaker 1: week talking about the idea of Nick Pavetta. Just real quick, Kyle,
- 16:45Speaker 1: anything you took away from And I know AJ Prebler
- 16:48Speaker 1: doesn't tell you really anything, okay, but I know on
- 16:50Speaker 1: Friday I asked and listen, last time we were here,
- 16:52Speaker 1: we talked about tatis, trade rumors, anything on Nick Pavetta,
- 16:55Speaker 1: And one thing he did say during his press or
- 16:58Speaker 1: is you can't have enough starting and he kept saying
- 17:01Speaker 1: the plan moving forward is you know it's gonna be
- 17:03Speaker 1: Michael King and Nick Pavetta. You have Joe Musgrove coming back,
- 17:06Speaker 1: and he talked about the need for young, controllable pitcher.
- 17:10Speaker 1: What do you think on Paveta, do you think that
- 17:12Speaker 1: there's a likelihood that he could still be moved?
- 17:16Speaker 3: That's my male bad question to you, Kyle.
- 17:20Speaker 2: It would have to be a blow him away kind
- 17:23Speaker 2: of package. The Padres understand what they have in Nick Pavetta.
- 17:26Speaker 2: They have a talented, i would say, frontline pitcher in
- 17:31Speaker 2: the sense he showed he could pitch that level last year. Again,
- 17:35Speaker 2: the track record isn't there, but he showed he can
- 17:37Speaker 2: do it last year. Who not only is able to
- 17:39Speaker 2: give you quality starts, but give you deep starts. We
- 17:42Speaker 2: saw him go seven, we saw him go eight. We
- 17:44Speaker 2: saw him be the guy that when the Potters need
- 17:47Speaker 2: to stop a losing streak, he was the guy who
- 17:49Speaker 2: go out there and he was your wind day guy.
- 17:51Speaker 2: If you needed seven, you know, seven innings, one run,
- 17:54Speaker 2: he gave it to you. So for the potters to
- 17:57Speaker 2: move him. It would have to be again for multiple young,
- 18:01Speaker 2: controllable players ready to play in the major leagues right now,
- 18:06Speaker 2: and other teams are generally hesitant to give that up
- 18:09Speaker 2: for someone who could be a free agent in a
- 18:11Speaker 2: year with Nick Povetta having his opt out, So that's
- 18:14Speaker 2: going to be the push poll here. Do we get
- 18:16Speaker 2: to a point in February where a team that really
- 18:18Speaker 2: needs starting pitching lost out on all of its free
- 18:20Speaker 2: agent targets and gets desperate and is maybe willing to
- 18:23Speaker 2: pay a higher price. Possibly, but again it's going to
- 18:28Speaker 2: take a lot to prime Nick Privetta from the Padres.
- 18:32Speaker 2: It could happen again, It's just we have to wait
- 18:35Speaker 2: and see. I think it would be later in this offseason,
- 18:37Speaker 2: after the free agent market has thinned out and keep
- 18:39Speaker 2: you're looking around saying, oh crap, we need help and
- 18:41Speaker 2: this is our only option right now.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Do you anticipate any huge moves coming just in baseball
- 18:46Speaker 1: overall over over the next week and a half or
- 18:48Speaker 1: can we go ahead and I'll just breathe and take
- 18:49Speaker 1: some time off and turn off our phones.
- 18:51Speaker 2: There will always be big moves. I think we are
- 18:53Speaker 2: going to start to see some of the more high
- 18:58Speaker 2: some of the Marque free agents.
- 19:00Speaker 1: The bigger names, the Baschets, the Kyle Teckers, guys like that, going.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Off the bad challengers. I think probably within the next
- 19:05Speaker 2: two to three weeks, I don't see any of these
- 19:08Speaker 2: guys remaining free agents into February. After spring training starts
- 19:11Speaker 2: like we saw with Bryce Harper, like we saw that
- 19:15Speaker 2: was insane. Yeah, yeah, I remember covering a Brave spring
- 19:17Speaker 2: training game when the news broke that Bryce Harper signed
- 19:19Speaker 2: with the Phillies. So I think we'll see them within
- 19:22Speaker 2: the next two to three weeks. We'll start see some
- 19:23Speaker 2: of the big guys come off the board, and then
- 19:25Speaker 2: when that happens, we're going to start to see the
- 19:27Speaker 2: middle tier for agency really start to pick up.
- 19:29Speaker 1: Two quick things, Kyle, before we wrap this Before, before
- 19:32Speaker 1: we wrap this this thing up, I'm just I wonder
- 19:34Speaker 1: if we're gonna get resolution on you Darvish's future in
- 19:38Speaker 1: the coming weeks. By the way, he was there at
- 19:41Speaker 1: the at the press conference for for Michael King, and
- 19:44Speaker 1: I think Michael made a very funny comp not a
- 19:46Speaker 1: funny comment, but he mentioned how Darvish actually sat in
- 19:49Speaker 1: on a meeting with his agent and he was really
- 19:51Speaker 1: really impressive, right, so I wonder maybe maybe he's getting
- 19:54Speaker 1: feet wet for them. For the next step is aj Prellers.
- 19:57Speaker 1: I don't know, as a special assistant assistant whatever. Go
- 20:00Speaker 1: scout Japan tigns some players. But I just wonder if
- 20:02Speaker 1: we might get resolutions sooner rather than later on you Darbash.
- 20:06Speaker 1: And my next question is on Michael King, Just what
- 20:09Speaker 1: do you get about this deal with you know, the
- 20:11Speaker 1: opt outs, what he can make, but especially with the
- 20:13Speaker 1: idea that there could be a work stoppage a year
- 20:17Speaker 1: for now.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Yeah, look, I mean that's something that affects everyone beyond
- 20:22Speaker 2: this Michael King.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Right.
- 20:23Speaker 2: On the one hand, every team, you know, players aren't
- 20:26Speaker 2: paid during a workstoppage. I think it's important to understand.
- 20:28Speaker 2: You know, people need to understand players are paid their
- 20:30Speaker 2: size during the season. If there's no season, they don't
- 20:33Speaker 2: get paid. So, you know, on the one hand, that's
- 20:37Speaker 2: something to say for certain teams like oh, you know,
- 20:39Speaker 2: they're not going to have to pay out the full
- 20:41Speaker 2: amount of the salary, but they're also not bringing the
- 20:44Speaker 2: gate revenue, which depending on the team, you know, between tickets, parking, food,
- 20:50Speaker 2: you know, in stadium, merch for the posits, every like
- 20:53Speaker 2: thirty minimum, you know, well, not minimally, I say most
- 20:56Speaker 2: teams it's about thirty to forty percent of their of
- 20:58Speaker 2: their revenue. Depends on the team, depends on the situation suation.
- 21:00Speaker 2: But if any business lost thirty to forty percent of
- 21:02Speaker 2: their revenue, they'd be in dire straight. So again, in
- 21:06Speaker 2: terms of the lockout, it's it's for all players, right,
- 21:09Speaker 2: we just have to wait and see what's going to mean.
- 21:11Speaker 2: I think realistically the Potters are doing the right thing,
- 21:13Speaker 2: which is trying to put their best foot forward to
- 21:16Speaker 2: win in twenty twenty six, because, as we've talked about,
- 21:19Speaker 2: the possibility exists of an extended lockout in twenty twenty seven,
- 21:22Speaker 2: and then by the time twenty twenty eight comes around,
- 21:25Speaker 2: Machadaw and Bogart's from their age thirty four seasons. I'm sorry,
- 21:28Speaker 2: it would be their age thirty five seasons. Then. You know,
- 21:31Speaker 2: as we've discussed, there are exceptions, you know, the Freddie Freeman's,
- 21:35Speaker 2: the Justin Turners, the JD. Martinez is their exceptions. But
- 21:38Speaker 2: on the whole, the majority of position players fall off
- 21:42Speaker 2: a cliff hitting their age thirty five season. In the
- 21:44Speaker 2: post steroid era, so understanding that trying to be as
- 21:47Speaker 2: competitive as they can be for twenty twenty six is
- 21:50Speaker 2: the right move. This was a good first step to
- 21:52Speaker 2: doing that.
- 21:53Speaker 3: I like it. I like it.
- 21:54Speaker 1: That was a lot of fun, all right, Kyle, I
- 21:55Speaker 1: read this was a lot of fun the very first
- 21:57Speaker 1: holiday mailbag, and this will continue into twenty two twenty six.
- 22:00Speaker 1: I already received a question about Manny Machado and the
- 22:02Speaker 1: idea of moving him one day to first base, but
- 22:05Speaker 1: we'll save that question for the next Padres mail bag.
- 22:09Speaker 1: I am Marty Caswell. That is Kyle Glazier. Thank you
- 22:12Speaker 1: so much for watching us here today on Friar Territory.
- 22:15Speaker 1: We are part of the Foul Territory TV network.
- 22:17Speaker 3: I need some gear.
- 22:19Speaker 1: I have my eyes on that gray, bluish hoodie that
- 22:22Speaker 1: I want, so I will be sending you my orders soon.
- 22:24Speaker 3: Kyle, appreciate you. We'll talk soon.
- 22:26Speaker 2: Sounds good. Have a great holiday, everybody,
