- 0:01Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett. Normally I'm talking about the
- 0:07Speaker 1: sports news. By the way, PCA 41 homers since we
- 0:10Speaker 1: last talked. Or I'm talking about regular news. But today
- 0:16Speaker 1: I want to do a little introspective like I sometimes do.
- 0:19Speaker 1: The whole morning today has been a dialogue about whether
- 0:23Speaker 1: I'm speaking too fast. Or mumbling on my podcast. Or
- 0:27Speaker 1: whether it's answering phones for Mike Gallagher. Or even just
- 0:32Speaker 1: being on the air with our local hosts here at 970.
- 0:36Speaker 1: So on my own podcast, I want to say at
- 0:38Speaker 1: 34 years old, I have a goal for when I
- 0:41Speaker 1: turn 35 a month and a few days from now.
- 0:44Speaker 1: I'm going to work my way back into doing voice
- 0:47Speaker 1: work for the company I work at because I want to.
- 0:52Speaker 1: I think that my voice is strong enough. I just
- 0:55Speaker 1: have to get to that point. And all morning long,
- 0:57Speaker 1: we've been discussing about my techniques and about my fast
- 1:01Speaker 1: talking and my slurring. And so here's my question to you.
- 1:05Speaker 1: When you listen to my podcast, and 66,000 of you
- 1:08Speaker 1: have done that, so thank you, are 66,000 of you
- 1:12Speaker 1: trying to figure out what the hell I'm saying half
- 1:14Speaker 1: the time or more than half the time? Meaning, am
- 1:17Speaker 1: I going too fast every episode that I get into
- 1:20Speaker 1: something I'm really excited about, really passionate about here at
- 1:23Speaker 1: One Look Up Alex Media? Because if I start slowing down,
- 1:30Speaker 1: And start talking a little more clear. It's not because
- 1:33Speaker 1: I'm slurring my words because I'm drunk or anything like that.
- 1:35Speaker 1: It's because I'm actually trying to talk to you. And
- 1:40Speaker 1: to train my voice to get to that level of
- 1:44Speaker 1: being a voiceover guy again. And all morning long we've
- 1:49Speaker 1: had this discussion. I even texted my mom who yesterday said,
- 1:52Speaker 1: Are you speaking low or is my hearing going bad?
- 1:56Speaker 1: I said, I'm probably speaking low. And I'm probably not enunciated.
- 2:01Speaker 1: So here we are. A month and 12 days away
- 2:07Speaker 1: from being 35. We're going to start the process of
- 2:11Speaker 1: better diction, of better communication, of better talking. And so
- 2:18Speaker 1: all those around me can actually understand what I'm saying
- 2:21Speaker 1: and what you out there can understand what I'm saying.
- 2:26Speaker 1: And I'm brought back to Bob Wolf. A month from
- 2:31Speaker 1: today will be the anniversary from Don Larson's perfect game,
- 2:33Speaker 1: which is just crazy how time is flying. And actually 56.
- 2:37Speaker 1: So it's actually going to be, if my math is
- 2:40Speaker 1: correct here, 70 years since the perfect game. That's wild. Well,
- 2:46Speaker 1: Bob Wolf trained me for about a year and a
- 2:50Speaker 1: half on how to do live reads, on how to
- 2:53Speaker 1: do a sports talk show, on how to do play
- 2:56Speaker 1: by play. And all morning long, I keep thinking about him.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Because he would always warn me back when I was
- 3:03Speaker 1: 14 years old that my speech would just dip at
- 3:10Speaker 1: the end of every sentence. I would be like, welcome
- 3:12Speaker 1: inside to the One Look Up Alex Media. I'm Alex Eric. Well,
- 3:16Speaker 1: maybe now, thinking about that and now thinking about how
- 3:20Speaker 1: I want to be understood by all, figuratively and literally,
- 3:26Speaker 1: I'm going to work on this. I'm going to enunciate
- 3:29Speaker 1: almost every word. Now, there are times where I'm going
- 3:32Speaker 1: to be very passionate about something and I'll just race
- 3:35Speaker 1: through it because that's just my nature. But what if
- 3:38Speaker 1: I slowed down, made my points with much more clarity,
- 3:45Speaker 1: and then you wouldn't be scratching your head on the
- 3:47Speaker 1: other side of the dial saying, what is this guy saying?
- 3:50Speaker 1: Or I guess on the other side of the streaming service,
- 3:52Speaker 1: whichever you may hear me on, whether it's iHeartRadio, Spotify, Spreaker,
- 3:57Speaker 1: our flagship station. And I feel like there's a bunch
- 4:01Speaker 1: of others that carry the One Look Up Alex Media content,
- 4:04Speaker 1: which I'm so very thankful for. But before I go
- 4:09Speaker 1: to the U.S. Open today, I just had to rip
- 4:11Speaker 1: this one because it's been a conversation all morning. And
- 4:16Speaker 1: so if you find that I'm hard to understand, email me,
- 4:21Speaker 1: alexgnyc at gmail.com. Do you know why, Ryan, I picked
- 4:26Speaker 1: Alex at AlexGNYC.com? Because it was faster and easier to
- 4:31Speaker 1: say than AlexG in NYC at Gmail.com. But you can
- 4:36Speaker 1: find me at both. Alex at AlexGNYC.com. AlexG in NYC
- 4:43Speaker 1: at Gmail.com. And I think back to my CBS 2
- 4:46Speaker 1: appearance where I said, follow me at AlexGNYC1. I'm amazed
- 4:50Speaker 1: 50 people were able to find that because I thought
- 4:52Speaker 1: I was very fast with that. So I'm going to
- 4:54Speaker 1: say it here. AlexGNYC1 is my Instagram. AlexGNYC1. And there
- 5:04Speaker 1: you'll find the FDNY commissioner speaking eloquently about 9-11. And
- 5:10Speaker 1: you'll also find a beautiful rendition of God Bless America,
- 5:14Speaker 1: which I'm probably going to play for you on this
- 5:16Speaker 1: podcast as well, so it's memorialized on One Look Up
- 5:19Speaker 1: Alex Media. Let me say that again. memorialized on One
- 5:24Speaker 1: Leg Up Alex Media. See, I'm starting to hear myself
- 5:30Speaker 1: when I speak fast. So if I say something another time,
- 5:33Speaker 1: and I know, Ryan, you do this. You actually go
- 5:35Speaker 1: back and say something a second time, and then they
- 5:37Speaker 1: don't hear that edit, but I know you do that.
- 5:39Speaker 2: 100%. When I'm doing my 10 million job spots here
- 5:41Speaker 2: at 970 The Answer, that's exactly what I do here.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Because we're always saying things 10 times fast, and then
- 5:46Speaker 1: we hear it, and like, oh crap, this is too fast. So...
- 5:51Speaker 1: If you hear me say it twice and it's a
- 5:53Speaker 1: raw recording, don't be alarmed. I'm not.
- 5:57Speaker 1: It's natural. I'm not stroking out on you. I'm actually
- 6:01Speaker 1: listening to it in my head as if I'm wearing
- 6:03Speaker 1: a headset and saying, man, I said this too fast. So,
- 6:08Speaker 1: don't be alarmed. I'm not repeating myself. I'm just hearing
- 6:12Speaker 1: it differently now because, you know, gamblers have gamblers anonymous,
- 6:17Speaker 1: alcoholics have alcohol anonymous... I'm having voiceover anonymous today because
- 6:24Speaker 1: that intervention, or what did you call it? A speakervention? Yeah,
- 6:28Speaker 1: a speechervention.
- 6:29Speaker 2: That's what it was. And look, Alex, I haven't told
- 6:32Speaker 2: a lot of people this. I used to take speech
- 6:34Speaker 2: classes back in the day. I don't know if you
- 6:36Speaker 2: were able to tell based off of how I talk now,
- 6:39Speaker 2: but I was not a good talker as a kid. So, look,
- 6:41Speaker 2: coming from that background of not being able to speak
- 6:46Speaker 2: that clearly... I know, I get where you're coming from.
- 6:50Speaker 2: And I mean, this is quite the speech intervention that
- 6:52Speaker 2: we're having today, you know?
- 6:54Speaker 1: I mean, and I'm 12 years into this job and
- 6:56Speaker 1: you'd think that by now I would get it, but
- 6:58Speaker 1: sometimes you need that little focus. And you know, I
- 7:01Speaker 1: find it interesting because the day after Labor Day, everything
- 7:04Speaker 1: just gets refocused, right? Like everything comes into view. You
- 7:07Speaker 1: got fall here, you got football here, you've got playoff
- 7:11Speaker 1: baseball coming around the corner. But I also feel like
- 7:14Speaker 1: In a lot of ways, even though we're not in
- 7:16Speaker 1: school anymore, it always still feels like that first day
- 7:18Speaker 1: of something new. I can't explain it. It's just something
- 7:20Speaker 1: I grew up with going to school. It was always
- 7:22Speaker 1: like that first day back, you know?
- 7:24Speaker 2: No, exactly. And it also goes to show you can
- 7:27Speaker 2: teach old dogs new tricks. I know you were saying
- 7:29Speaker 2: that literally just the other day.
- 7:31Speaker 1: I feel it, too.
- 7:31Speaker 2: The same applies here.
- 7:33Speaker 1: And I've been at this since I was age 21
- 7:35Speaker 1: and mentored since I was age 14. So there's something
- 7:38Speaker 1: to this 20-year project. And I finally understand what Bob
- 7:43Speaker 1: Wolf was saying. what my dad was saying for all
- 7:45Speaker 1: those years, what Matt says, what you say, what my
- 7:50Speaker 1: mom said yesterday. And, of course, I reach out to
- 7:53Speaker 1: my stepdad, who's this big radio guy, Vic, who you
- 7:56Speaker 1: hear at the beginning of this podcast. This is your host,
- 7:58Speaker 1: Alexander Garrett. That's my stepdad. So I'm getting advice because now,
- 8:02Speaker 1: to be quite frank with you and quite raw, we
- 8:08Speaker 1: have three people in production here, and I need to
- 8:11Speaker 1: sort of, step up my voiceover game. So poor Ryan
- 8:13Speaker 1: is not doing 12,000 of these voice job spots. Thank you. And, uh,
- 8:19Speaker 1: and I'm so ready to jump in. It's third time.
- 8:22Speaker 1: It's time. I actually speak clearly and have hosts like
- 8:25Speaker 1: Joe Piscopo, Arthur, Adela, Lucas for our, who I play
- 8:29Speaker 1: soundbites of sometimes to not say, what the hell did
- 8:32Speaker 1: you just say? Or can you say that again? Like
- 8:35Speaker 1: my goal is to say something and be understood. And, uh,
- 8:41Speaker 1: Maybe that will just help in my everyday life too
- 8:45Speaker 1: when it is a communication business we're in and communicating
- 8:49Speaker 1: clearly is definitely part of the job. And that's my
- 8:53Speaker 1: message here at One Leg Up Alex Media.
