- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, we have things that we could sanction. We have
- 0:03Speaker 1: very traconian sanctions, and we'll see what happens. Right now,
- 0:07Speaker 1: the strait is open. We a lot of boats are
- 0:10Speaker 1: coming through. People aren't reporting that, and that may slow
- 0:14Speaker 1: down a little bit at some point, but right now
- 0:16Speaker 1: a lot of boats are coming through. The naval blockade
- 0:19Speaker 1: has been extremely effective zero I mean literally while it's up,
- 0:24Speaker 1: and it's been for quite a while, you know, except
- 0:26Speaker 1: for a couple of little pauses where we opened it
- 0:28Speaker 1: purposely with a deal, but the deal didn't termine, you know,
- 0:32Speaker 1: the deal didn't turn out to be what they said.
- 0:33Speaker 1: You know, when they tell us one thing and they
- 0:36Speaker 1: do another. But the blockade has been one hundred percent successful.
- 0:39Speaker 1: No boats have gotten into Iran, but they are getting
- 0:42Speaker 1: in for other places. But we'll see. We're going to
- 0:44Speaker 1: see what happens. It'll either be extremely good and oil
- 0:48Speaker 1: prices are going to drop like a rock, or will
- 0:51Speaker 1: continue to do exactly what we're doing. You know, they
- 0:54Speaker 1: were talking about three hundred and fifty dollars a barrel
- 0:57Speaker 1: and it's today eighty four eighty five, and we are
- 1:01Speaker 1: getting a lot of oil out. But the other thing
- 1:04Speaker 1: that's happened is people have found other resident.
- 1:06Speaker 2: TRUP addressing there. We did get a little term limit
- 1:09Speaker 2: in there as well. Admilstavritez. We don't have talk about
- 1:11Speaker 2: term limits, but when it comes to what is happening
- 1:13Speaker 2: in Iran, right, we also have the UAE suspending at
- 1:17Speaker 2: this point all trade with Iran. Iran's foreign minister has
- 1:19Speaker 2: said that the US blockade had contributed to shortage some
- 1:22Speaker 2: price increases. So there's some evidence right that this economic
- 1:25Speaker 2: pressure is working and that sources TELCNN is really becoming
- 1:29Speaker 2: the focus for the administration, not so much the military campaign.
- 1:33Speaker 2: The question though, how long do you believe the hard
- 1:36Speaker 2: line I ERGC can actually weigh out that pressure.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Months but not years, and that's the good news for
- 1:45Speaker 3: the administration. They'd love to get this over with in
- 1:48Speaker 3: a matter of weeks, but that, unfortunately is not how
- 1:52Speaker 3: sanctions work. It's not how blockades work, not how embargoes work.
- 1:56Speaker 3: They take time to build economic pressure. But I think
- 2:00Speaker 3: that is the President's best option at this point is patience.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Keep the blockade in place, put economic pressure on Iran,
- 2:09Speaker 3: get them back to the table that way, and force
- 2:12Speaker 3: them to open this straight. It's a tale of two blockades.
- 2:15Speaker 3: They're blockading the strait of our moves, we're blockading their coastline.
- 2:20Speaker 3: We're going to have to wait them out if we
- 2:22Speaker 3: want to get them back to the table. Months, months,
- 2:25Speaker 3: but not years.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Animal James Serveritez, always appreciate your insight.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Thank you, Thanks Erica.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Joining US now Republican Congressman Don Bacon at Nebraska. He's
- 2:36Speaker 4: a US Air Force combat veteran who retired as a
- 2:38Speaker 4: brigadier general. Is now in the House representing Nebraska and
- 2:42Speaker 4: on the House Armed Services Committee. Congressman Trump is essentially
- 2:45Speaker 4: saying that now the strategy is giving around the old
- 2:49Speaker 4: talk to the hand treatment. What do you make of this?
- 2:51Speaker 4: Is this what you would advise him to do?
- 2:55Speaker 5: I think this is a better strategy than what we
- 2:57Speaker 5: have had. The blockade probably the easier thing for us
- 3:01Speaker 5: to enforce. Right now, we've been able to choke almost
- 3:06Speaker 5: all of the traffic going in and out of Iran.
- 3:08Speaker 5: That's good. Their economy is really struggling. It's going to
- 3:12Speaker 5: really weaken the regime. However, I would say that Iran
- 3:15Speaker 5: had been fairly effective up until now, shutting off about
- 3:19Speaker 5: ninety percent of the flow of traffic. But We're starting
- 3:21Speaker 5: to see more traffic get in and out of there,
- 3:23Speaker 5: and that's a good thing. The problem I think with
- 3:25Speaker 5: the president early in this fight, he over promised it's
- 3:29Speaker 5: gonna be a quick fight, and then he tried to
- 3:32Speaker 5: go it alone without trying to bring in Democrats or
- 3:34Speaker 5: trying to involve Congress. And you can't fight a war
- 3:37Speaker 5: in a partisan manner. It's got to be a bipartisan fight,
- 3:40Speaker 5: and he should have anticipated more of a longer term fight.
- 3:43Speaker 5: And I really think this is handicapping him now because
- 3:46Speaker 5: the Democrats do not want to work with the President
- 3:49Speaker 5: on this, and this needs to be a bipartisan effort.
- 3:53Speaker 5: After my folks, Iran has killed a thousand Americans. They
- 3:57Speaker 5: were the leading export or terror. They had a thousand
- 3:59Speaker 5: blistic muscles, they were trying to produce a nuclear weapon.
- 4:03Speaker 5: Some action had to be taken, if not with this president,
- 4:07Speaker 5: maybe previous presidents, but something this could not be allowed
- 4:10Speaker 5: to continue like this. But I think the president is
- 4:12Speaker 5: onto a strategy of blockade. I also recommend say us
- 4:17Speaker 5: there's be fewer people talking on this because there's contradictory
- 4:21Speaker 5: messages going out there. Speak softly but carry a big stick.
- 4:25Speaker 4: So as I don't need to tell you, even though
- 4:27Speaker 4: you're not running for reelection, the war is very unpopular.
- 4:30Speaker 4: It is weighing heavily on whether or not many of
- 4:33Speaker 4: your colleagues are going to be re elected in the fall.
- 4:36Speaker 4: Barrett Marson is a Republican strategist in Arizona. He told
- 4:40Speaker 4: cnnend quote, there is one person in this country who
- 4:42Speaker 4: doesn't gas prices, just one, and unfortunately that one person
- 4:47Speaker 4: kind of controls our fate.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Quote.
- 4:49Speaker 4: At some point, do you think Republicans are going to
- 4:51Speaker 4: be forced to really distance themselves from Trump given how
- 4:54Speaker 4: unpopular both he and the war and the ensuing high
- 4:58Speaker 4: gas prices are.
- 5:01Speaker 5: But there's some reasons why this war is unpopular. I'd
- 5:04Speaker 5: like to address that first. First, he didn't try to
- 5:07Speaker 5: bring Democrats on board at all, and you cannot fight
- 5:10Speaker 5: a war in a partisan manner. You know, Ronald Reague
- 5:13Speaker 5: would have Tip O'Neil over and they would and they
- 5:15Speaker 5: would try to come up with a bipartisan thing. I
- 5:17Speaker 5: do believe there would be Democrats would have been more
- 5:19Speaker 5: supportive if the president made an effort. Because I Ran
- 5:22Speaker 5: was the leading exporter of terror. They killed a thousand Americans,
- 5:26Speaker 5: They had those deadly roadside bombs in Iraq. They killed
- 5:28Speaker 5: over six hundred Americans, for example. So the case was there,
- 5:32Speaker 5: but the President tried to go it alone, and then
- 5:35Speaker 5: it was going to be a quick fight. We're gonna
- 5:37Speaker 5: make a deal tomorrow, We're gonna make a deal next week.
- 5:39Speaker 5: A deal's eminent. I think these things have undermined, are
- 5:42Speaker 5: underminded as effort, but we have to go back. What
- 5:45Speaker 5: do we need to do now? If we stop this now,
- 5:49Speaker 5: I ran wins and Iran could still produce a nuclear weapon,
- 5:53Speaker 5: maybe not as soon as they could have, but with
- 5:55Speaker 5: China's or Russia's halt or North koreassault, they can rebuild
- 6:00Speaker 5: this capability and they will still be the leading exporter
- 6:03Speaker 5: of terrorists. I think the President has to keep this
- 6:05Speaker 5: blockade on it, and I find the he's got it.
- 6:09Speaker 5: In the end, he's got to prevail in this fight,
- 6:12Speaker 5: because if he doesn't, we're going to have a worse
- 6:13Speaker 5: threat on our hands down the road. But he's sort
- 6:16Speaker 5: of put us at a spot where he's back into
- 6:18Speaker 5: a corner with this being an unpopular war, and I
- 6:21Speaker 5: just it goes back from the beginning he had this
- 6:24Speaker 5: had to be a bipartisan effort, not a one man band.
- 6:28Speaker 5: That's what it became.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Joining me now Army Colonel Peterman's where he's a former
- 6:32Speaker 2: age General David Petraeus and a professor of military history
- 6:35Speaker 2: at Ohio State University. It's good to have you with us,
- 6:37Speaker 2: so we look at where things stand. President Trump's inconsistency
- 6:41Speaker 2: comes as Cutter is now voicing support for Oman's talks
- 6:44Speaker 2: with Iran. This despite threats from President Trump to Bono
- 6:47Speaker 2: Mom over Oman rather over the Hormuz dispute, and notably,
- 6:51Speaker 2: those negotiations were a requirement of the MoU, which the
- 6:53Speaker 2: President once hailed. Do these threats from Trump risk excluding
- 6:58Speaker 2: the US from the shaping of any agree mist on
- 7:00Speaker 2: the Strait?
- 7:03Speaker 6: The threats are absolutely not helpful. Their typical Trump bluster.
- 7:08Speaker 6: He doesn't like being excluded from these negotiations, and he
- 7:13Speaker 6: doesn't know what Oman and Iran are agreeing to, and
- 7:17Speaker 6: if it includes their control over the Strait of Hormus
- 7:20Speaker 6: and the ability of Iran to exact tolls, He's not
- 7:23Speaker 6: going to have any part of that. And thus he
- 7:26Speaker 6: has struck out in the way he knows, with typical
- 7:32Speaker 6: bluster and threats that probably will not be acted upon.
- 7:37Speaker 2: In terms of bluster, he also posted this image. I
- 7:39Speaker 2: think we can put it up for you of the
- 7:41Speaker 2: Strait of Removes labeling it is new US territory. How
- 7:46Speaker 2: much does that further complicate things?
- 7:50Speaker 6: It doesn't complicate things at all. Everyone knows this is
- 7:53Speaker 6: not true. I think it's pushback against Iran, which claims
- 7:57Speaker 6: the Strait as its own territory, and he says, okay,
- 8:00Speaker 6: can play that game. We'll claim it as well. In fact,
- 8:03Speaker 6: it's an international waterway. I think all sides need to
- 8:06Speaker 6: agree on that. But that's one of the problems with
- 8:10Speaker 6: these negotiations. Iran wants to control the Strait until it
- 8:15Speaker 6: agrees that it's an international waterway. I don't think we're
- 8:17Speaker 6: going to come to any sort of diplomatic solution to
- 8:20Speaker 6: this crisis.
- 8:21Speaker 2: In the Oval Office yesterday, Trump reiterated his goal for
- 8:24Speaker 2: this war was to keep Iran from having a nuclear weapon.
- 8:28Speaker 2: In terms of what you see is the US military
- 8:31Speaker 2: strategy right now doing anything to prevent Iran from having
- 8:34Speaker 2: a nuclear weapon, Well.
- 8:37Speaker 6: It's done quite a bit. I mean, it's hit the
- 8:39Speaker 6: Iranian nuclear facilities, it's manufacturing plants. It is really set
- 8:44Speaker 6: back its nuclear program. Ironically, I think negotiations on the
- 8:48Speaker 6: nuclear program are probably easier at this point than negotiations
- 8:53Speaker 6: on opening the strait. Iran has made it its goal
- 8:57Speaker 6: and it's in life to control the Strait of our removed,
- 9:00Speaker 6: which it views as its only leverage against the United
- 9:03Speaker 6: States and our allies to prevent another attack on Iran.
- 9:08Speaker 6: The nuclear program. The Iranian nuclear program isn't going anywhere quickly.
- 9:13Speaker 6: We all know that they want to gain a nuclear
- 9:16Speaker 6: weapon eventually, but that can be stymied in the future
- 9:19Speaker 6: by further action.
- 9:21Speaker 2: I also wanted to ask you about the Hufi so,
- 9:23Speaker 2: a proxy of Iran right in Yemen now claiming an
- 9:26Speaker 2: attack on a Saudi oil refinery. There have been clashes
- 9:31Speaker 2: intensifying in the Battlemandeb straight. Are you concerned about a
- 9:35Speaker 2: new front opening?
- 9:39Speaker 6: Absolutely? I mean one of the ways that we were
- 9:42Speaker 6: able to sort of ease the blockade of the Strait
- 9:47Speaker 6: of Hormuz was to have Saudy pump oil to its
- 9:52Speaker 6: terminal on the Red Sea and then move through the
- 9:55Speaker 6: Strait of Babel Mundeb and get it to Asia. That's
- 9:58Speaker 6: been closed down now and it has created a significant blockage.
- 10:04Speaker 6: The only way to get that oil out now is
- 10:06Speaker 6: through the sus Canal, which has also been hit by
- 10:08Speaker 6: the hooties. So this is a problem and a very
- 10:13Speaker 6: unwelcome development.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Yeah, Colonel, always appreciate your perspective. Thank you.
