- 0:07The Oakland Athletics faced the California Angels for a spring training game on March 9th, 1974.
- 0:13Oakland were the world champions, having won the World Series in both 1972 and 73 under manager Dick Williams.
- 0:20But Williams had resigned after the 1973 season after disagreements with owner Charles Finley.
- 0:25The Athletics hired Alvin Dark to manage the 1974 team. He had previously managed the Giants, Kansas City Athletics, and Indians during the 1960s.
- 0:35California entered the season under manager Bobby Winkles, who had led the team to a 79-83 record during his first season as skipper in 1973.
- 0:44This audio recording is from the California Radio broadcast featuring announcers Don Dresdale and Dick Emberg.
- 1:00Talking about opening night, on the 9th of April at the Big Eight, there will be a spectacular finale today. Opening night, a colorful aerial fireworks display immediately following the game. So jot down that game. I bet date Tuesday, April the 9th, the Angels American League opener at the Big Eight.
- 1:16Tickets go on sale Monday at the Anaheim Stadium box office, also at Mutual and Liberty agencies at the United California banks in Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties.
- 1:26We have a pair of American League umpires, one National League umpire working the game here this afternoon. The National League umpire behind the plate will be Dave Phillips. Merle Anthony will be at first base. Hank Morgan-Weck will be around at third.
- 1:38The A's lead it off with Bill North in center field. Bert Campaneras will be at short stop. Left fielder Joe Rudy will bat third. Last year's MVP in the American League, Reggie Jackson will be in right field.
- 1:49Gene Tennis will do the catching. Darren Johnson will be at first base. Johnson at first. The designated hitter will be Ray Posse. Rich McKinney will be at third base. The captain of the A's, Sal Bando, has a badly bruised right hand. He was hit by a pitch while taking batting practice.
- 2:05McKinney at third. And Manny Treo, a man of controversy surrounding the World Series last year, will get his start at second base, although Dick Green has agreed to terms with Charlie Finley after he had announced his retirement.
- 2:17The Angels do a look as Mickey Rivers in center field lead it off. Rivers in center. Denny Doyle, a very valuable acquisition, will be at second base for the Angels, batting second. Bobby Valentine, and so good to see Valentine back in the lineup, although he would be the first to admit he is not 100% yet.
- 2:34The first pitch from Rick Rushell of the Cubs yesterday, he was rifle in the center field for a base hit, and he actually had to slide on that bad leg too, and he came up, well, not, he was limping, but he'll run with a limp now, but it didn't hurt him that much.
- 2:47Bob Oliver will be at third base. Mike Epstein will be at first. He will bat fifth. Holly Brown, another acquisition in the deal with Milwaukee that sent Clyde Wright to the Brewers, will be in right field.
- 2:58Richie Scheinblum will be the designated hitter. Scheinblum, the D.H. Ellie Rodriguez. Rodriguez, a man that the Angels have coveted for the last three or four years.
- 3:09Finally, getting him from the Milwaukee Brewers in the Clyde Wright deal will be behind the plate. And the young man from Texas, David Chalk, will be at shortstop, and Bobby Winkelson talking to him says a lot of people are worried about this shortstop slough on the Angels.
- 3:22He said, I for one am not. This young man can play a shortstop. So we're set to go. The switch hitting Bill North, stepping in from the left-hand side against Billy No-No, Bill Singer.
- 3:32We begin play for 1974, and again a pleasure to bring to you the big fella, number 53, here's Big B.
- 3:38Thank you very much, David, and a very pleasant good afternoon. As the first pitch delivered by Bill Singer is a fastball taken up high for ball one.
- 3:44Now we're underway along this Angel Radio Network. In 1974, Singer has his sign from Rodriguez. The next pitch, a fastball just outside for ball two.
- 3:54Going around and setting the defense for the Angels, Bob Oliver at third, Dave Chalk is at short, Denny Doyle at second base, and over at first base will be Mike Epstein, the outfielder, Valentine Rivers and Brown from left to right.
- 4:07Singer checks with Rodriguez, and a 2-0 pitch, a fastball taken high for ball three. So Bill Singer, behind the count on Bill North, who steps out, looks down at his third base, coach Ervin Norton.
- 4:21Ervin from Pasadena, Arcadia area, blocks the few signs. Here's a 3-0 pitch outside and high for ball four.
- 4:33So Bill North leads it off with a base on balls, and Bert Campaneras.
- 4:40Welcome to Bad Campy, last year hitting.254 homeruns, 46 RBIs, North a lot of speed on at first base, Epstein holding.
- 4:49The infield shortened up, Oliver on the grass at third, Singer goes over to first, and North back in time.
- 4:55On deck the left fielder Joe Rudy. Campaneras taking his time, moves in now, Singer has his sign set, goes over to first one more time, this time diving back is North.
- 5:13Now the game just underway, the world champions of baseball, the Oakland A's and the California Angels. Singer again, and they just about had him.
- 5:22Bill North was breaking the wrong way, Singer this time gave him his good move, and they almost picked him off.
- 5:29That's the first base umpire, Muril Anthony, right there on top of the play.
- 5:34Two umpires today on the bases, Muril Anthony at first, Hank Morganweck.
- 5:39Right now positioning himself out at second base behind the plate, Dave Phillips.
- 5:44Campaneras once again takes his time, checks down with the third base coach Herb Norton, and of course Alvin Dark, the new manager of the Oakland A's, much like Dick Williams.
- 5:54They will hit and run, they will squeeze, they will steal, Singer's set, checks the run at first, there he goes, the pitch swung on him, Mr. Thordak, second!
- 6:02They don't get him, and North did not slide, Dave Chalk taking the throw, and we'll have to see if North is okay, he is.
- 6:10He went in standing up, Dave Chalk as he applied the tag, pushed North over, so it will be a stolen base for Bill North, and the count right now, 0-1 to Bird Campaneras.
- 6:23Oakland A's speed on display right there, North with 53 stolen bases last year, and he can fly, Singer tried to keep him close three or four times, but he got a good jump this time, and he stole it standing up.
- 6:35Singer into the stretch as he checks North out of second base, Campaneras fronts it right back to Singer, up he has one play to Epstein, and time to get Campaneras in on the play, Bill North moves over to third.
- 6:46So, as we were saying, Alvin Dark, as like Dick Williams, very fundamental managers, they will not pull too many tricks out, they will try and go for the runs right there, Campaneras moving his runner from second to third with nobody out,
- 7:02and now the A's have the go-ahead run here in the first inning at third base.
- 7:07The infield will play back, and Joe Rudy will be the hitter, that will be a sacrifice for Bird Campaneras.
- 7:21Joe Rudy last year, hitting 270, the first pitch is swung on, and this strike went to fastball, as Bill Singer rode that one up and in.
- 7:29He had 12 home runs, 66 RBI, Joe Rudy, one of the members of the Oakland A's who did not win his arbitration battle with owner Charlie Finley.
- 7:43Singer working out of the stretch, North away at third, Singer set, checks the runner, the next pitch just outside for ball one.
- 7:52Down even, one ball and one strike. The infield straight away, the outfield is saved.
- 8:02Oliver just behind the bag at third, off the line. Singer checking signs into the stretch, he checks North at third, a 1-1 such a fastball, up and in for ball two, two balls in a strike.
- 8:15On deck, Reggie Jackson. Worse stock, the A's pitching coach is coaching over at first base.
- 8:27As we said before, Irv Noren over at third, Singer once again delivers a 2-1 pitch, a breaking pitch called strike two.
- 8:34Rudy started, then held up, the count evens out, two balls, two strikes. On a beautiful afternoon, Angel Stadiums in Palm Springs, California.
- 8:46A very slight breeze, ever so slight, kind of blowing out of the East and well, maybe the Northeast.
- 8:53Here's a 2-2 pitch, they got him looking such peace. Good fastball on the outside corner, catches Joe Rudy looking, and Bill Singer now has two away.
- 9:03And that a big out.
- 9:11That is the first strike out of the year for Bill Singer.
- 9:16Bill North, if you joined us late, let off with the base on balls, he stole second, he was sacrificed to third by Bird Camp and his.
- 9:23Joe Rudy has just been caught looking. And Reggie Jackson stands in. Singer from the full windup now, there's a little looking five ball left in the field.
- 9:31Here Litch is going to drop, Mickey Rivers comes on, North will score and the World Champion A's take a 1-0 lead.
- 9:38Jackson did not hit that ball well at all, it jammed him, but Reggie, a strong left hand hitter, fought the ball off, looped it into left center field where Mickey Rivers had no chance whatsoever, or Bobby Valentine, the left fielder.
- 9:53The A's take a 1-0 lead as Gene Tennis will stand in. Gene hit.258 last year, Singer working from the stretch goes over to first to drive Jackson back.
- 10:09Singer once again from the stretch, the first pitch is just inside ball one and Ellie Rodriguez is a little hesitant behind the play, getting the ball back to Singer, I think Ellie thought he had it.
- 10:24Singer again into the stretch, he checks Jackson goes over and Reggie diving back in time.
- 10:40Tennis in his articles, here's another player that did not win his arbitration battle either, once again Singer goes over to first and once again Reggie Jackson diving back.
- 10:51And Gene said, well, he said I didn't win my arbitration battle and so I just don't believe I'm going to do much catching for Mr. Finley in the old Sunnys, but today he is back there.
- 11:00There's another throw to first and once again Jackson is back.
- 11:10Singer into the stretch and the pitch is swung on and missed the fastball.
- 11:14The county's in depth at one ball and one strike.
- 11:19Tennis as we said before at 258 last year at 24 home runs 84 RBI.
- 11:26The infield back straight away, Mickey Rivers slightly in left center.
- 11:30Singer's set, checks the run of the one, one pitch, a breaking pitch, off speed pitch, gets to the outside corner, first strike, two calls.
- 11:40The world champion Oakman A's.
- 11:43Leading the Angels here, just the top half of the first inning, game just underway, one to nothing, Singer goes over to first, Jackson again diving back.
- 11:50Tomorrow it will be the San Diego Padres and once again right here on Angel Radio and KTLA Channel 5.
- 12:01One ball, two strikes.
- 12:03Singer's next pitch is check swing, fastball taking it up high and away for ball two, the county evens the two balls, two strikes.
- 12:09Two outs, Jackson at first, A's one, the Angels nothing.
- 12:14On deck, Darren Johnson.
- 12:17Singer once again to the stretcher, the two two pitch, fastball right back up and right below us, look out.
- 12:23Oh, well everybody's got to have spring training.
- 12:32Harry Dalton standing right next to us, he says, you give a little and you know I gave a little.
- 12:39He gave a lot as right.
- 12:41Count remains the same, two balls, two strikes.
- 12:44Here's Singer's two two pitch, just outside with a fastball, ball three.
- 12:48So the count goes full in with two outs, three two count on James Tennes.
- 12:53He will be off and running.
- 12:59One more time, Mike Epstein moves in behind, Singer's set, here's the three two pitch, winner goes, it hits him, it's a slider.
- 13:08Eugene Tennes on hit by the pitch, that would have been ball four anyway.
- 13:19And the A's have runners at first and second, Jackson at second, Tennes at first and Darren Johnson will be the hitter.
- 13:25Yesterday in the A's 13 to 3 win over San Diego, they had five home runs, Eugene Tennes had two, and the hitter up here right now, Darren Johnson had one.
- 13:35First pitch is a breaking pitch, fouls right straight back, 0-1 to Johnson.
- 13:38The man out of second base had one, Reggie Jackson.
- 13:42And the catcher, Ray Fossey on deck, also he had the fifth.
- 13:49Singer has his sign from Rodriguez, dancing out of second is Jackson, next pitch a fastball, foul off of the mask of LA Rodriguez, and Singer out in front, 0-2.
- 13:58No balls, two strikes.
- 14:11Singer checking signs with Rodriguez, has the one he wants, he goes to the belt, he checks Jackson out of second base, big shot, starting to move in behind, a fastball, swing on him, missed, tech three, and that will do it for the A's.
- 14:22So Phil Singer, back at Darren Johnson, in the inning for Oakland, they come up with one run on one hit, there were no errors, they lead two, and the score after the first half inning of play, it's the Oakland A's one, and the California Angels coming to bat.

- 15:38Back here at Angel Stadium in Palm Springs, fight a blue, taking his warm-up sauces.
- 15:44And the Angels will send up Mickey Rivers, Denny Doyle, and Bobby Valentine in that order.
- 15:50The A's scored one run in the first inning. The Angels did bad, so we'll set the defense for the world champion.
- 15:56At third base will be Rich McKinney. At shortstop will be Bird Campaneras.
- 16:02Out at second base, Manny Triglio. And over at first base, Darren Johnson.
- 16:06The outfield, Joe Rudy in left, Bill Northen Center, Reggie Jackson in right, and the battery, Gene Tennant, and fight a blue.
- 16:16Fight a blue last year, 20-game winner for the A's, 120, lost nine, earned an average of 3.28.
- 16:22Against the Angels, he was at 500. He won two, he lost two, and had an earned run average last year against the Californians, 3.58.
- 16:32Well, Mickey Rivers leads it off, fight a blue. Into the windup, the first pitch, a front down at third base, I don't go foul.
- 16:39Gene Tennant is hopping out of there in a hurry, but that ball just rolling foul. Had that ball been fair, been very godful, they would have got Rivers, who has excellent speed.
- 16:48Mickey, last year, after having a fine year at Salt Lake City, came up to the parent club, the California Angels, where he hit 3.49.
- 16:56He did not have a home run, but he had 16 RBI.
- 17:00Coaching down at third, the newcomers to the Angels this year, Witte Herzog, and over at first, Sawley Parker.
- 17:06Time call right now, manager Alvin Dark moving out alongside, and a cheer outside of the dugout.
- 17:15Blue wind, here's the one strike pitch, a line drive hit to center field, right in the nose, coming on North, he got the ball.
- 17:22Rivers, who has 3.22 second, goes up to the ball, a strong running time.
- 17:27Mickey Rivers, right there, displaying his speed and excitement.
- 17:32That manager Bobby Winkle's hopes will be on display for the 1974 season.
- 17:37A line drive, Bill North made an excellent try.
- 17:41The ball just popped out of his glove as he hit the ground, it rolled right in front of him, he got up in a hurry, and he threw a strike to Manny Trillo.
- 17:50But the great speed of Mickey Rivers enabled him to get under the tag with a fine slide.
- 18:00And Denny Doyle right now, checked at the first pitch as he squirted around the front, taking a little bit low for ball one.
- 18:12That'll be rule of double for Mickey Rivers.
- 18:14Blue at the bell, he checks Rivers at second, and next pitch to Doyle, a good run up the first base side.
- 18:19Darren Johnson has only one play, that's the tag Doyle as he goes by, and over the third goes Mickey Rivers.
- 18:29Well, the Angels find themselves in the same position as the A's were in the first inning.
- 18:36Bill North led off with a base on balls, he stole second, then Campanier sacrificing the third.
- 18:44For the Angels, Mickey River leads off with a double, he has sacrificed the third by Denny Doyle.
- 18:52And a fine round of applause for the number three hitter in the Angel lineup, Bobby Valentine.
- 18:57Blue into the lineup, the first pitch is fouled back to the right and out of play.
- 19:02All-in-one to Valentine last year, up until May 17th when he broke his leg against the same world champion Oakland A's,
- 19:11trying to make a catch of a home run off of the bat of Dick Green.
- 19:16Bobby hit 302 at a home run, 13 RBI.
- 19:20Blue winds, here's the one strike pitch, just outside for ball one.
- 19:24One ball and one strike, it's the A's one, and the Angels nothing, one out in the last of the first.
- 19:32The infield back, they will give up the run.
- 19:35Blue working out of the full windup, Rivers down the line at third.
- 19:38Here's the one-one pitch, a breaking pitch popped to the right side, will curl foul, and that will go back and out of play.
- 19:45So blue ahead of Valentine, one ball and two strikes.
- 19:51Bob Oliver.
- 19:58Now with the two strikes, manager Alvin Dark will bring his infield in.
- 20:04And the logic behind this right here, you feel that he's got a pitcher out there with good control,
- 20:09and making it, he's got to hit his pitch and protect the plate.
- 20:13Here's the one-two pitch, line drive at the right field, that will be a base hit.
- 20:16And the Angels, as Mickey Rivers scores from third, Bobby Valentine going the opposite way.
- 20:22A line drive base hit the right field, and we are tied at one.
- 20:28Well that's good to see, Don, Valentine hanging in there.
- 20:31I can't think of a man who could have possibly spent a more frustrating last nine months than Bobby Valentine
- 20:37since the 17th of May when almost the time that he got out of the hospital, started working and working and working,
- 20:43and there's a lot of sweat and pain and I'm sure a few tours that have gone into that base hit over the last nine months.
- 20:50Boy that is so true, Dave. And Bob Oliver goes after a breaking pitch,
- 20:53and away does it get it for strike one, Bobby Valentine at first base.
- 21:00So he has his first base hit, make that his second base hit of the spring.
- 21:04He had one yesterday, his first time up in Oldville on the first pitch, his first RBI of the spring.
- 21:09Blue at the belt, the pitch to Oliver, ground ball hit the third, McKinney backs up, plays it on the big hop,
- 21:14goes to three oh high, he's safe at second, he's at it third.
- 21:21A throw by McKinney, and Merle Anthony, the first base umpire, gave the out sign,
- 21:30and Oliver is standing at first base. Well we'll see what happens now.
- 21:36Now he changed his decision, he's calling straight, well he has not, he's calling out, he was out.
- 21:44Well on the play it'll be, rule five, four, three, the put out on Oliver, Valentine safe at second base.
- 21:58Now there's two gone, and Mike Epstein stands in against his former teammate,
- 22:02he goes after a fast ball, doesn't get it for strike one, and again Bobby Valentine forced to go down painfully
- 22:08and make the slide, but there he is, dancing away from second base, apparently no harm done.
- 22:13Bob Oliver, I don't know, should have beaten that ball out I think.
- 22:17The one strike pitch is hit off the hands to the left side, over by the A's dugout,
- 22:21that will swirl around, hits the light tower, and comes right back down into the glove of Gene Pinnis,
- 22:26but of course it hits the light tower and is out of play.
- 22:30Funny play David, I'll tell you the ball that McKinney had to back up late on the big hop, he threw high to Trio,
- 22:36Trio had to go high and near to haul it down on the shortstop side of the bag, and it was a very close play at first base,
- 22:43kind of a little funny call by Murrow Anthony at first, he gave it that little jabbing shot.
- 22:51But Oliver is gone and Valentine remains at second base.
- 22:55We are tied at one, two outs in the last half of the first inning.
- 23:00One ball, two strikes, the F-Team, make that 0-2, here's the two strikes, the flying guard,
- 23:04hit deep to left center field, slicing away from North, still slicing and he makes a diving kick.
- 23:11A diving kick by Bill North, and that retires the side for the Angels, and it saves the A's a run.
- 23:21But in the inning for the Angels, they come up with one run on two hits,
- 23:25they were known as they leave one in the score after the first inning of play,
- 23:29the World Champion Oakland A's won and the California Angels won.
- 23:59You've said the word that means you like to do it all.
- 24:04When you say both, it means you want the beer that's got a taste that's no better.
- 24:12When you say both, you tell the world you know what makes it all the way.
- 24:19When you say both, you say you're carrying out to only want the key of peace.
- 24:26There is no other way, there's only something else, because the key of peace is leading on the rest.
- 24:35When you say both, it means you've said it all.
- 24:44You'll face right-hander Bill Singer who winds the first hit, and that hit him up in the shoulder.
- 24:49Talking to Bill Singer before the game, he said he just hadn't been able to cut it loose yet.
- 24:55And that is so understandable this early part of the spring.
- 25:00And you probably see that more so with power, he says, he would put Bill Singer in that caliber.
- 25:08So Ray Fossey hit by the pit, that's the second one by Singer, and Rich McKinney stands in.
- 25:15The first pitch of fastball taken up high for ball one.
- 25:18Epstein holding Fossey at first base, the infield in double play depth,
- 25:21the infield of Oliver Chuck Doyle and Epstein from third to first, the outfield of Valentine Rivers and Brown.
- 25:28The next pitch is a high pop on the right side, Denny Doyle going back,
- 25:32getting his eye just crossed in the foul territory, makes the catch.
- 25:37Fine play by Denny Doyle going right over to the fence.
- 25:42Rich McKinney, retired and one gone for the A's as many, Trio will stand in.
- 25:50Well, angel baseball is brought to you by Standard Stations and Chevron dealers,
- 25:54and a faulty car ignition can mean a drop in gasoline mileage.
- 25:57To take this Chevron maximum mileage tip, have your ignition system checked regularly.
- 26:08Trio steps in, now steps out, he checks down to the third base, Coach of Norrin.
- 26:13Fossey away at first, one gone, the top of the second.
- 26:16First pitch is Slider delivered inside and Loverball won.
- 26:23Trio last year at Tucson hit 312, eight home runs, 78 RBI.
- 26:29The 1-0 pitch is hit off the hand, popped on the right side once again.
- 26:33Denny Doyle in behind Epstein and makes the catch.
- 26:43Now for the singer, it's Ray Fossey with the first pitch, a Slider that kind of backed up on him.
- 26:49He gets McKinney and Trio to pop to Denny Doyle, will go to the top of the order in Bill North.
- 26:56North watches first time at bats, 12 seconds, scored the A's first run.
- 27:00We are tied at one, we're in the top of the second, two out.
- 27:03Now Epstein will move in behind Fossey with a left hand hitting Bill North standing in.
- 27:09First pitch a fastball, up in the air goes Rodriguez to haul it down.
- 27:12One ball and no strikes.
- 27:17Beautiful afternoon here in Palm Springs.
- 27:19Yesterday a little cloudy overcats right in the morning.
- 27:22There goes the runner, the pitcher calls, strikes it, throw it at Trockett, second day, get Fossey.
- 27:28Ellie Rodriguez right there showing the signs that Bobby Winkle said the Angels could not do last year,
- 27:34throw runners out, he guns down Ray Fossey, the A's are gone in the second.
- 27:39In the inning no runs, no hits, there were no A's, they leave nobody.
- 27:44And the score, after one and a half, it's the A's won and the Angels won.
- 27:51Well what is good service all about?
- 27:53I'll tell you what, the clerk who empties the entire stock room in search of that exotic stereo gadget your son just can't live without,
- 28:00even though it turns out that bat store never even carried them.
- 28:04Oh your secretary checking for last minute jobs before she goes home.
- 28:08And mind she's late for her first date with a wild looking guy she just met on the elevator.
- 28:12So one more letter to type would jeopardize her entire future.
- 28:15Now that's good service.
- 28:17And so is Continental Airlines.
- 28:19They still believe that if they do a little more for you a lot faster, you'll come back and fly them again and again.
- 28:25Continental, the most DC-10s are the most daily flights between Los Angeles and Chicago.
- 28:30A total of 11, including five non-stops, with economy fairs available on every one.
- 28:36Call your travel agent or Continental Airlines, the proud bird with the golden tail.
- 28:41And you know, they really move their tail to give you good service.
- 28:45And that includes daily service from Los Angeles to Denver too.
- 28:52Well we're set to move into the last half of the second inning.
- 28:55A newcomer from the Milwaukee Brewers in the trade, Ollie Brown, will stand in.
- 29:00Vita Blue into the wind up the first pick of that ball, catches the outback corner.
- 29:04That one's off.
- 29:10Here's the one strike pitch, off speed curve ball taking low, ball one, one ball, one strike.
- 29:16There are some other scores for you down at Bureau Beach, Florida.
- 29:19The Atlanta Braves and the Dodgers tied up at three apiece after eight.
- 29:23The next pitch is fouled back to the right side.
- 29:25That will go back and out of play.
- 29:28Steve Garvey, get a home run in the eighth inning with nobody on.
- 29:32Mike Worm in the seventh inning with one arm for the Braves.
- 29:36At Bradenton at Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, they've done at Beach Houston and Montreal,
- 29:41St. Petersburg, the New York Mets, and the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 29:45The next pitch is fouled off of the mask of Gene Tennesse, and that shakes him up just a little bit.
- 29:51Gene kind of checking the ivories a little bit.
- 29:56Moving around, see if they're all in place.
- 30:00The Cat, one ball and two strikes, Ali Brown.
- 30:02At Winterhaven, it's the Phillies, two, and the Boston Red Sox, one.
- 30:06That's after two.
- 30:08Scottsdale, Milwaukee, and the Cubs, no score yet.
- 30:14At Yuma, Arizona Western, and the San Diego Padres, no score.
- 30:17Tucson, San Francisco is at Cleveland.
- 30:20For Lauderdale, Baltimore, and the New York Yankees, it's Sara Sota.
- 30:23After five, we'll give you that score in a minute.
- 30:25Here's the one-two pitch.
- 30:26That's hit off the hands on the left side.
- 30:28In foul territory goes Rich McKinney, the third baseman, shading his eyes from the sun, and makes the Cat.
- 30:33So with one guard, we'll pause for station identification.
- 30:36This is the Angels Radio Network.
- 30:39And this is KXTC, Glendale, Phoenix, Arizona.
- 30:42The time is one o'clock.
- 30:44Back here at Angel Stadium in Palm Springs, Richie Schindblum, the designated hitter, takes a change, high and away for ball one.
- 31:05One ball and no strikes.
- 31:06Schindblum last year, hitting.328.
- 31:08Right of blue's next pitch, a line drive, hit foul.
- 31:11Looking down the left field line, Schindblum a switch hitter, hitting from the right side, off the left-handed pitching, a right of blue.
- 31:18Some other scores at Sara Sota.
- 31:20It's Kansas City 8 and the Chicago White Sox 3.
- 31:22That is after five.
- 31:24After six is Detroit 4, Minnesota 1.
- 31:27There's a ground ball hit off the hands, just foul.
- 31:30Rich McKinney making the play behind the bag, flips it back to right of blue, and the count moves.
- 31:34One ball and two strikes.
- 31:37And in that game, Minnesota and Detroit, Borgman, a home run for Minnesota, in the six with nobody on.
- 31:48On deck, Ellie Rodriguez.
- 31:50Right of blue shakes off a sign from tennis, now has the one he wants.
- 31:53Here's the one-two pitch and off-speed curveball outside for ball two.
- 31:57So the count evens up.
- 31:58It's two balls and two strikes.
- 32:00We're in the last half of the second inning, we are tied at one, the world champion Oakland A's and the California Angels.
- 32:08Here's the two-two pitch from blue.
- 32:10It is inside and low, ball three.
- 32:13So the count goes full of Schindblum, three balls and two strikes.
- 32:18Schindblum against left-hand pitching last year, hits 267.
- 32:22And against right-handed pitching, hits 357.
- 32:25The next pitch, a ground ball hit off the end of the bat over the hole, Cabanera,
- 32:28bobbles the ball, picks it up, throws, not inside.
- 32:32Now, Burt Cabanera has had the ball stay down on him, throw just behind him.
- 32:37And by the time he got it to Sharon Johnson, his first fake, Schindblum across the bag,
- 32:42it will be an error on Burt Cabanera's, and you will not see that happen too often.
- 32:49So with one gone, Schindblum at first and Ellie Rodriguez will stand in.
- 32:54Rodriguez in the eighth spot in the batting order, on deck in the ninth spot, Dave Chuff.
- 33:04Rodriguez last year at Milwaukee, hitting 268.
- 33:07He did not have a home run.
- 33:08He had 30 RBI.
- 33:11One gone, last half of the second inning.
- 33:12We were tied at one, infield and double play, depth.
- 33:14Blue, into the stretch, he checks the runner.
- 33:16The pitch is a high-five ball at the center field.
- 33:19Bill North has to retreat a few steps, glove up to shade the sun and make the gap.
- 33:28Now there's two gone, and Dave Chock will be the hitter.
- 33:31Dave, hitting 232 with the Angels last year, did not have a home run.
- 33:35He had five RBI.
- 33:42Today, the youngster out of Dallas, Texas, 5'10", 175 pounder, Rich McKinney,
- 33:47about a step behind the bag at third, now moves up even with the bag.
- 33:52Blue goes to the set position.
- 33:53The first pitch to Chock is a fastball.
- 33:55That's taken down a little bit away from ball one.
- 34:02Chock checking with the third base coach, Wadi Herzog.
- 34:04Wadi flashing a few signs.
- 34:07At first base, Richie Schindblum is checking with his third base coach.
- 34:11He goes, the pitch swung on and is dropped by Tennant.
- 34:15And let's see, it is not a foul ball.
- 34:18The umpires move up, and they count one ball, one strike.
- 34:23So Schindblum moving on the pitch.
- 34:25Richie will be credited with a stolen base.
- 34:28And they count even one ball, one strike to Chock.
- 34:30So the Angels have the go-ahead run out at second base, with two gone the last of the second.
- 34:35They're tied at one by the Blue Spins and Whirls, but nobody there.
- 34:42On deck, the laid-off hitter, Mickey Rivers.
- 34:45Blue kind of bobs his head up and down, as if to say,
- 34:48let me see that sign again from his catcher, Gene Tennant.
- 34:51Into the stretch, and here's the next pitch.
- 34:53He's hit off the hands into short right field.
- 34:55Coming on, Reggie Jackson going out many-three-oh.
- 34:58It is Reggie Jackson for the catch, and the side is retired for the Angels.
- 35:04In the Angels' second, there were no runs.
- 35:06There were no hits.
- 35:07There was one air, and one man left on base.
- 35:09And the score, after two complete,
- 35:11it's the Angels' one and the A's one.
- 35:14One, two, three.
- 35:17You will see.
- 35:19The Nova Six makes sense today.
- 35:23Three, three, four.
- 35:26Count to four.
- 35:28Out of the Chevy Nova Six.
- 35:31Two.
- 35:32The Chevy Nova Six to your left, the young habit,
- 35:35with strikes of your own, to that practical six-cylinder engine.
- 35:39Three.
- 35:40The Chevy Nova Six hatchback.
- 35:42The door on the left, one on the right, and a big hatch on the back.
- 35:45Flip the back seat down, and you've got a Nova Six that takes you to station wagon.
- 35:49Four.
- 35:50The Chevy Nova Six four-door sedan.
- 35:52In fear from the start, he attracted a rich pick of four-door comfort and convenience
- 35:57by a six-cylinder economy.
- 36:00Can you hear?
- 36:02The numbers say.
- 36:05The Nova Six makes sense today.
- 36:09Chevrolet makes sense for America.
- 36:17Now we're getting ready to move along to the top half of the third inning,
- 36:21and to bring you the action, give you a new pitching change, here's Dave Nehar.
- 36:25All right, Donald, thank you, and again, good afternoon, everybody,
- 36:27on this magnificent Saturday afternoon in Palm Springs.
- 36:30The Angels, after the first two innings of work by Bill Singer,
- 36:34send a young man to the mound who still remains a question mark,
- 36:37and hopefully the questions will be answered on Rudy May in 1974.
- 36:43Rudy May this year literally is fighting for a job as the fourth Angel starter
- 36:48with all the pictures that the Angels have in camp,
- 36:51and manager Bobby Winkles at this early date has just about got settled in his mind
- 36:57that it's Ryan and Singer and probably Frank Tanenna, and the fourth spot is up for grabs.
- 37:02Here is Switch hitting Bill North, fighting from the right-hand side.
- 37:05He cues one off the end of that foul up the first-base side.
- 37:09Westcock, coaching at first base, picks it up and tosses it back to Rudy May.
- 37:13North started out in 1973 for the Open Days as their designated hitter.
- 37:18He played in 12 games in the early going for Open as the D.H.,
- 37:23and then he took over in center field and he never lost their job
- 37:26until he suffered the injury on the 30th of September.
- 37:29Pitch goes all the way to the backstop.
- 37:31North had shortened up that zifter bunk.
- 37:34A ball and a strike on Bill North.
- 37:38The Open Days embroiled in controversy all last year, all during the offseason,
- 37:44and all during the spring of 1974, but all they do is hammer out a lot of hits
- 37:50and a lot of runs and they win, like yesterday, 13-3.
- 37:531-1, pitch to North.
- 37:54Back ball outside.
- 37:57Two balls and a strike on Bill North, the man with a great speed who stole 53 sacks
- 38:03for the World Champions last year.
- 38:05May then down, gets a sign from Rodriguez.
- 38:07The left-hander's pitch is a ground ball toward second.
- 38:09There is sure-handed Denny Doyle.
- 38:11He picks it up and throws out Bill North by 15 feet.
- 38:15So North is the first May victim here in the third in a 1-1 tie,
- 38:19and here is Bert Campanera.
- 38:22After North had stolen second base off Bill Singer in the first inning,
- 38:25Campanera sacrificed Bill to third base,
- 38:31and then North scored on Reggie Jackson's dying quail slicing into left-center field.
- 38:36Ragabetto, Campanera.
- 38:38Then the pitch to him is a fly ball to right field.
- 38:40Back on the ball is Ollie Brown a couple of steps to his right,
- 38:43backpedaling and makes the catch two down.
- 38:48The Oakland A's attempting to become World Champions in baseball
- 38:52for the third consecutive year.
- 38:55The New York Yankees were the last club to win as many as three consecutive World Championships,
- 39:00and actually the Yankees ran off five in a row.
- 39:03The Yankees were the World Champions of baseball in 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, and 1953.
- 39:13Here is Joe Rudy, a singer strikeout victim, his first time up.
- 39:16The pitch to him down low in the dirt.
- 39:18Rodriguez picks it up after it goes off his shin guard.
- 39:21One ball and no strikes on Joe Rudy.
- 39:24Rudy hitting at 270.
- 39:27Twelve home runs, 66 RBIs.
- 39:29As Don Dysdell pointed out, Rudy, one of those who did not win arbitration,
- 39:33was Charlie Finley, nine of the A's, one before the arbitrator, and the pitch,
- 39:38low on outside, two balls and no strikes.
- 39:41Two, go Rudy.
- 39:43Five, one in arbitration, four lost.
- 39:49Rudy was one of the losers.
- 39:52Joe, as we keep saying from year to year, probably the most underrated, the Major Leaguer.
- 39:57The pitch to him is a ground ball toward third.
- 39:59Oliver gets a convenient second hop, throws him out by about five feet.
- 40:03So an easy one, two, three inning for Rudy May here in the third.
- 40:07No runs, no hits, no errors, nobody left.
- 40:10We go to the bottom half of the third.
- 40:11It's the Angels one, the A's one.
- 40:15When an automobile battery is about to go dead, there often is no warning signal.
- 40:19In the old days, there usually was some warning.
- 40:21The starter would grind and turn over very slowly before the battery went completely dead.
- 40:26But in today's systems, you could turn the key on one day and nothing.
- 40:30That's why it's a good idea to ask your Chevron standard man to run a check on your battery.
- 40:35Make sure it has plenty of charge left.
- 40:37And when it finally is time to replace it, don't keep putting it off.
- 40:41Battery failure can be costly and inconvenient.
- 40:44Instead, stop in along the Chevron way for a look at the Atlas battery line, the Kano Power, the Pacetetter,
- 40:50the Premium Power Extra Heavy Duty, all quick starting, reliable batteries with a quality Atlas name on them,
- 40:57and the Chevron standard name behind them.
- 40:59There's an Atlas battery designed to fit almost every car on the road, with budget terms to fit almost every pocketbook.
- 41:05Stop in and ask for a check on the condition of your battery.
- 41:08If it needs to be replaced, take a look at the outstanding selection of Atlas batteries now at standard stations and most Chevron dealers.
- 41:18Move along now to the bottom half of the third inning at Angels Stadium in Palm Springs.
- 41:22In this 1-1 tie, the Angels send the top of their batting order up to face left-hander Vi to blue.
- 41:27They'll have Mickey Rivers, Denny Doyle, and Bobby Valentine in that order.
- 41:31And it was that threesome that produced the Angels' first run back in the first inning to tie it at 1-1.
- 41:36Mickey Rivers hit a line dry that practically drove through centerfielder Bill North in the first inning,
- 41:43and he ended up at second base with a double.
- 41:45The line in the pitch to Mickey shortens up as if the run takes it low and inside, ball one.
- 41:49One ball and no strikes.
- 41:51National League umpire Dave Phillips calling balls and strikes.
- 41:54American Liger Merle Anthony is at first base, and another American League umpire Hank Morgan-Weck is at third.
- 41:59And the pitch delivers a swing out of it.
- 42:02One ball and one strike.
- 42:11A ball and a strike as blue gets his sign from Tennesse, and the pitch went on line dry right centerfield.
- 42:16That'll fall in for a base hit, maybe two.
- 42:18Here is Rivers-Ralford on his way for second.
- 42:21North up with the ball, and Mickey Rivers in at second base with a stand-up double.
- 42:26Well, this is the year for Mickey Rivers, everybody says.
- 42:29And here in the first game in Palm Springs, Mickey has a pair of doubles.
- 42:35A lead-off double here in the third, and here is Denny Doyle.
- 42:38Doyle laid down a beautiful, sacrifice, he dragged it up third base to Tenn Rivers to third his first time up,
- 42:45and let's see if he is up there with those same instructions here in the same circumstances in the third.
- 42:50We remind you that Angels Baseball is brought to you by Bush.
- 42:52Natural beer takes.
- 42:54Something special about a beer that can say that, so do yourself a favor.
- 42:57Ask for the natural one.
- 42:59Ask for Bush.
- 43:00Blue spits the oil around the bound he does this time, foul off the third-base side.
- 43:04The ball is one strike to count on Denny Doyle.
- 43:13Doyle picks up from the Philadelphia Phillies as payment in Billy Grabakowicz's deal.
- 43:21A couple of other ball players eventually ended up from the Angels with the Phillies to complete that deal.
- 43:27So Doyle up on the bat about an inch or so, around the bunt does, off the head of the bat, foul again.
- 43:34The ball is two strikes on Denny Doyle.
- 43:37Doyle a feisty little fighting type ball player.
- 43:39You're going to love Denny Doyle when you come out and see him play either here in Palm Springs or at Anaheim Stadium.
- 43:45Don't forget that opening night against Billy Martin's Texas Rangers is just right around the corner, April the 9th.
- 43:54Blue at the belt, checks Rivers, pretty good lead at second base, and he comes to the plate.
- 43:58Doyle swings and misses, strike three.
- 44:01So for Vita Blue, that is his first strikeout of the game.
- 44:05Rivers still at second, and here is Bobby Valentine.
- 44:07Valentine given quite a greeting as he returned to the Angel livery for 1974 when he first came up in the first inning
- 44:16and sent a line drive base hit in the right field to drive in Mickey Rivers with the Angels one of the game.
- 44:26Blue at the belt, and the pitch to Bobby swung on and flared foul off to the right back out of play.
- 44:36Tomorrow the San Diego Padres end here in Palm Springs to take on the Angels.
- 44:42The National League for the most part this year is using the designated hitter in spring training.
- 44:47However, the San Diego Padres are one of those clubs that will not go along with it, so we will not see the DH out here tomorrow afternoon.
- 44:55A strike on Valentine as Blue goes to the belt, Rivers the lead, and it's 1-1 tie and the delivery on the way.
- 45:01Strike off, Blue took just a little something off the fastball.
- 45:05Two strikes on Bobby Valentine.
- 45:08Buddy Herzog coaching down at third, and what a plus an addition this veteran is for the Angels coaching staff in 74.
- 45:16Saldy Parker is over at first.
- 45:19The stretch by Blue, the two strike pitch out of Valentine high, down to third goes Rivers, a throw to third in plenty of time
- 45:24to get the sliding Mickey Rivers, and it looked like Mickey did not get that good of a jump.
- 45:29So Rivers is erased from Gene Tennis to Rich McKinney.
- 45:37Two to five if you're scoring with us, two down in the count on Valentine, a ball and two strikes.
- 45:45Pitch was high and inside, just the perfect place for the catcher Tennis to shoot down Mickey Rivers.
- 45:53Blue now of course working from the full wind up, and a 1-2 delivery to Bobby.
- 45:58Curve swung on, line drive thinking in a hurry in center field, but there is North to play it on a hop, and Valentine is two for two today.
- 46:04They had a base hit yesterday.
- 46:07So the unsuccessful steal of third base by Mickey Rivers kind of stings right here in this situation as Valentine loops one into center field.
- 46:20And here's McBob Oliver.
- 46:22Well make your plans to see the opening game of the Angels-Dodgers freeway series at Anaheim Stadium.
- 46:27It will be on Friday night, March the 29th, the stretch by Blue, the pitch to Oliver, inside with a fastball, ball one.
- 46:35Tickets for that Angels-Dodgers freeway series at the Big A go on sale Monday, and you'll have more than 200 outlets to pick them up.
- 46:45Blue's one ball pitch to Oliver's popped right up the shoot on the left side of the infield, Bert Campanera shading his eyes from the desert sun, and he finally makes the catch.
- 46:55The Angels are gone in the third. No runs of base hit, no errors, and a man left.
- 46:59And the score after three full, it's the Angels won, the A's won.
- 47:05When you say Bud Wiser, when you say Bud, you say a lot of things nobody else can say.
- 47:26And trying to put the back down in that hole, and is having trouble putting the sack in. First base umpire Murrell Anthony is standing there, along with West Dock, the pitching coach, trying to anchor the sack at first base, and apparently it has been done now.
- 47:43And we'll play baseball.
- 47:45Bill Singer, meanwhile, after finishing up his first two innings of work doing one sprint out in right field, from right to center field and back again.
- 47:55Now the signs of spring. What a beautiful day we have. This could not be more perfect.
- 48:00Yesterday in Aultville, the wind blowing either straight in or from left to right field, I'm estimating, but it had to be 35, 40 miles an hour.
- 48:10Here's May's first pitch to Reggie Jackson, the ground ball into the hole through for a base hit on the right side.
- 48:15So Jackson is two for two as he hammers May's first pitch into right field.
- 48:19First base hit off Rudy May, and here is Gene Tennant, who was one of two men hit by Bill Singer in the two innings that he worked.
- 48:30Tennant's hitting.258 last year, with 24 home runs and 84 RBI.
- 48:37The Oakland A's winning the American League West, subsequently the playoff, of course, with Baltimore and then the World Championship, with the New York Mets, but it was not that easy for Oakland last year.
- 48:48As a matter of fact, the Chicago White Sox led the American League 51 days last year.
- 48:54The Angels were on top for a day, Kansas City on top for a few days, and the pitch flung on to the ground ball, hot shots, and shortstop Valentine.
- 49:02He goes to Doyle, and the Angels have their first double play of 1974. Nicely turned over, David Chalk to Denny Doyle to Mike Epstein.
- 49:12Six for three of your scoring, two down, and here is Darren Johnson.
- 49:20You know, over the past four years, Continental has had the fewest number of passenger complaints of any major domestic airline, and that's according to records on file with the CAB, Civil Aeronautics Board.
- 49:33Darren Johnson takes the pitch low and outside, one ball and no strike.
- 49:38Darren, doing a fine job as the A's designated hitter last year, hitting 246, but he had 19 home runs and 81 RBIs, swing and a miss at a fastball by May, and it's already in the glove of catcher Ellie Rodriguez.
- 49:52A ball and a strike, and there are many general managers in the American League West that think there's a lot of room at the top this year.
- 50:02Step into shallow center field, a second baseman Doyle going out, center field to Rivers coming in. It is Rivers for the catcher, we cry out a sigh.
- 50:11So the A's and the fourth turn to side on a base hit. No Angels errors with the twin killing nobody left, and as we go to the bottom half of the fourth, the Angels won and the A's have won.
- 50:20But what is good service all about? Well, I'll tell you what, the taxi driver who chases you three and a half blocks in the rain with that briefcase he found on the backseat, never mind the briefcase, might not have been yours after all.
- 50:32Or the waitress who went to the trouble of getting all white meat in your club sandwich even though the chef was in a terrible mood, so she really hated asking.
- 50:40And besides your ship, then, ten minutes ago, that, my friends, is good service. And so is Continental Airlines. They still believe that if they do a little more for you a lot faster, you'll come back and fly them again and again and again.
- 50:54Continental offers DC-10 service on the most nonstop daily flights between Los Angeles and Denver, a total of six, including one from Ontario.
- 51:02Economy fair is available on every one, so call your travel agent or Continental Airlines the proud bird with the golden tail.
- 51:10After all, they really move their tail to give you good service, and that includes daily service from Los Angeles to Chicago, too.
- 51:18After three and a half innings of play, we have a 1-1 tie. The A's will make a change of pitchers. John Blue Moon Odom coming along.
- 51:25This is Dave Niehaus with Dick Enberg, Don Drysdale, and Dick Nelson. And we hope that you make your plans to come down to Palm Springs and see the Angels here at Angel Stadium sometime during the next three weeks.
- 51:36They will be here three weekends, this weekend, next weekend, and on Saturday, two weekends ahead.
- 51:41A 1-1 tie. We go to the bottom of the fourth, and for more play, here's Dick Enberg.
- 51:45Thank you, Dave. A 1-1 tie and Blue Moon Odom tuning up with Cantor Gene Tennant.
- 51:49The A's got their run at the top of the first inning. Alitov walked to Bill North. He stole second base, moved to third on Campanieros' sacrifice, and came home on Jackson's looping single to center field.
- 51:59The Angels tied it immediately in the bottom of the first inning. When Rivers doubled off North's glove and center field, moved to third on Doyle's sacrifice, and came home on Bobby Valentine's single to right field.
- 52:09Rivers with a pair of doubles in the game, and Valentine two for two, a pair of singles off starter Vita Blue, who has finished his three innings, allowed one run in the four hits.
- 52:19Mike Epstein starts it for the Angels, bottom of the fourth inning. Big Mike lined out to the center fielder North his first time up. North with a fine play. Fastball is high, ball one.
- 52:29Tennis behind the plate, the infield for the green and gold clad A's. McKinney at third, Campanieros at short, Manny Trio at second, Darren Johnson at first, with Rudy North and Jackson playing around toward right for Epstein.
- 52:42Pitch is high again, two balls and no strikes. Dave Phillips behind the plate, the other American League umpires today, and Merle Anthony at first base, and Hank Morganweck over third.
- 52:54Odom reads tennis, swings into that elaborate windup, kicks and deals. High ball three. Odom has a record of problems with control, especially early in the season.
- 53:08And he's been high on the first three deliveries to Epstein. Mike might be green light at three and oh, let's see. Here it comes. He takes the strike.
- 53:17Across the letters, caught the outside corner, three and one. Wiley Herzog, newest member of the Angels coaching staff down at third, relaying the signs from skipper Bobby Winkle.
- 53:27Daldy Parker moves over to first base in 74. The pitch, strike two called. Epstein caught, that one was outside.
- 53:35And so did some of the grandstand umpires, so getting themselves tuned up for the coming season as well.
- 53:42Full count to Epstein. Olly Brown and Ricky Scheinblum to follow. Here's the pitch. Low, ball four.
- 53:51Now Epstein draws the leadoff walk from Blue Moon Odom. And here's Olly Brown. Filed out to third baseman Rich McKinney his first time up.
- 54:02While Denny Doyle saw very little left-handed pitching with Philadelphia last year, and probably will see much more this season, Olly Brown saw just a bit of right-handed pitching. He was used primarily as a swingman.
- 54:17He fouls this one out of play. Brown probably to be used for tuning against the left-handed pitching.
- 54:26Throwing number 14 on the back of his Angel White. One-one tie, bottom of the fourth inning. Odom from the set looks over at Epstein to pitch.
- 54:38Flies one over the outside corner, O and two.
- 54:45Skip Lockwood continues to fire down on the Angel Bullpen in right field. He'll be pitching in the top of the fifth inning.
- 54:52Left field set for two. Odom looks over at Epstein. The two-strike pitch. Foul back on a check swing.
- 54:58Skip step over our Channel 5 cameras.
- 55:05Olly Brown, lean, lanky, right-handed hitter. Where do we stand? That right down on the end.
- 55:15Odom has the sign. The two-strike pitch is swung on and popped up behind short. Out goes Campaneras. In comes Rudy. Campy still going out and he can't make the play.
- 55:23Epstein moves in to second. He'll be in there in time as Rudy plays it to the second base from trio.
- 55:29That ball carried much farther than it appeared it would. Rudy doesn't pick it up. It was late coming in. Campaneras staggering under it and he did not come close to catching the ball.
- 55:39Still had it about five feet away. So Brown drops in at Texas Lakers and the Angels with no one out in the fourth inning have a chance to gain the lead.
- 55:48They had that opportunity in the third when Rivers let off with a double but was trying to steal third and then Valentine with a meaningless single with two outs and Rivers gone from the base pass.
- 55:59Here's Scheinblum. He switches around hitting left-handed against Odom. The pitch by Blum is upstairs, ball one.
- 56:07Scheinblum safe on Campaneras' area. It's only time up. And then on a hit and run stole second base and that is new.
- 56:16Scheinblum in seven major league seasons has never stolen a base.
- 56:21Enfield looking for two. The pitch swung on a line right center field. That's going to be in for a base hit. Epstein is around third. He'll score. Jackson bobbles the ball.
- 56:30Scheinblum to second base. He's in and stopping at third is Brown as the Angels wade through to one.
- 56:41Call of the double all the way. There was a bit of confusion in the Oakland Enfield. No one covered second base.
- 56:47So even had Jackson come up with a cleanly and fired hard into second. They could not have gotten Scheinblum. So credit Richie with an RBI double.
- 56:56Brown moves around to third base and Epstein scores from second. The Angels in front two to one. Still no one out.
- 57:03Runners to second and third in the batter is catcher Ellie Rodriguez. Fly to center field. It's only time up.
- 57:10Outfield plays him toward right center. Give him the gap in left center field. Odom from the full lineup. Here's the pitch. Breaking ball high.
- 57:20Enfield playing back up the middle. Campaneras and Frio. McKinney three steps behind the bag of third.
- 57:28But Johnson, the first baseman, is playing in on the grass. Odom swings into the wind up the pitch. Low with a fast ball. Two and O.
- 57:36Double moon Odom off to a rough start. He walks Epstein. Brown loop to single to left. And then Scheinblum with a line double to right center field.
- 57:49Two to one Angels. Bottom of the fourth inning and here's the pitch. Right. A slider across the letters on the outside edge.
- 57:59Two and one to Rodriguez to get to 68 with the Milwaukee Brewers last year.
- 58:06Boring number six on his Angels uniform. Brown from third. Scheinblum from second. The two-one delivery.
- 58:14Line drive center field. Racing over is North. He makes the catch. Tagging is Brown. Here comes the throw. Brown to the plate. He scores.
- 58:22The Angels lead three to one.
- 58:28So Rodriguez gets the run in with a line shot out to center fielder Bill North. Holding on to play at second base with Scheinblum.
- 58:38Rodriguez delivering and the Angels have a two-run lead here in the bottom of the fourth inning. As Dave Chalk getting ninth in the order, steps up.
- 58:46The young Texan right-handed hitter up on the handle of the bat. Scheinblum away from second base. Odom from the stretch to pitch.
- 58:54Bonded and missed. Chalk trying to catch McKinney back in the field to third base.
- 59:03Well, the San Diego Padres. A one o'clock start. Radio time, 1240 for Angel warmup. One o'clock on KTLA Channel 5 in Los Angeles.
- 59:15One strike pitch by Odom. Bonded and fouled into the glove of Pennis and apparently off the glove and then the wrist rolls away. Two strikes on Chalk.
- 59:28The Angels tomorrow. Chance to see Nolan Ryan for the first time this spring. Frank Tanana, the young heralded left-hander for the Californians and Rich Hand, scheduled to work against the Padres.
- 59:41Two strike pitch to Chalk. Breaking ball high one and two.
- 59:46Then the Angels will move on to Arizona. Play the Cubs and the A's Cleveland over there early next week before returning to their desert home here in Palm Springs.
- 1:00:00One and two, the count to pitch. Top foul behind the catcher, Pennis, rolls halfway to the backstop screen.
- 1:00:11The Angels with a couple of runs off Odom here in the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:00:16Scheinblum's double following a walk-up seen in the single by Brown. Scheinblum driving in one run and the other coming home on Kelly Rodriguez's sacrifice fly.
- 1:00:28Two strike pitch by Odom. Chalk looks at a high change and Odom has an excellent change, tantalizing. He really pulls the strength.
- 1:00:38John, who's had some bad luck in his life, wears number 13 on the back.
- 1:00:44The pitch fouled into the glove of Pennis. Strike three. Pennis on his way to the dugout, but hold on, Geno, there's another route to go.
- 1:00:51That's two away and it's part of the whole learning process. Another season begins.
- 1:00:57First strike out for Odom. We're going to pause for station identification. This is the Angels Radio Network.
- 1:01:03You don't have to haul those old garbage cans out to the street and back. Save yourself work with a box of Wild Bill pickup trash bags now at all Phoenix fire stations.
- 1:01:11This is KXTC Glendale Phoenix.
- 1:01:19Three to one. The Angels lead the A's, bottom of the fourth, and in two outs, Scheinblum at second. And the first pick to Mickey Rivers is outside.
- 1:01:27Blue Moon Odom on the line, looks back at second and here's the pick. Ground ball to the left side, right at Kampiner.
- 1:01:33He scoops and feeds it to first for the out and the inning is over.
- 1:01:37Rivers out short to first. The Angels get two runs, two hits, and lead one. And after four full here at Angels Stadium in Palm Springs, the Angels three, the world champion Oakland A's one.

- 1:02:37Does he have a good news to multiply once we're in a proper frame of mind? Chevelle Malibu Classic. Make the good news home for your family. Chevrolet makes sense for America.
- 1:02:55After four innings, the total is the Angels three runs, six hits, no errors of left four. Oakland, one run, two hits, one error, and the A's have stranded two men.
- 1:03:07Skip Lockwood becomes the third Angel pitcher following daughter Bill Singer and Rudy May May with two solid innings, based only six men.
- 1:03:15A loud one-based hit, didn't walk nor struck out anyone. And now Lockwood, one of the members of that big trade with the Milwaukee Brewers, comes in.
- 1:03:24Could be a very important part of this season. Lockwood could be used as a starter or as a long reliever.
- 1:03:31As excellent stuff, a natural sinker, he was signed for a hundred thousand dollar bonus by Charlie Finley as an infielder out of Boston, Massachusetts, and then couldn't hit the curve ball, became a pitcher.
- 1:03:42Feeds the fastball inside to Ray Fossey, the A's designated hitter today. Fossey hit by a pitch and thrown out trying to steal his only time up.
- 1:03:53Lockwood delivers on the outside corner with too low, two and oh. So the battery of Lockwood and Rodriguez, they know each other well.
- 1:04:03Skip right-hander, has his sign, into the windup, kicks and deals, and it's swung on in this, two and one.
- 1:04:16Lockwood, six feet tall, broad-shouldered 190. His two-one pitch, Fossey, thousand out of play.
- 1:04:28At Milwaukee, in the last four years, Lockwood was five and twelve, ten and fifteen, eight wins and fifteen losses, and last year won five and lost twelve.
- 1:04:39But in those four years, the DRA, a very respectable 3.75, sends this one outside. His problem has been command.
- 1:04:46He has good pitchers. It's just a matter of being able to get them in the strike zone and in the spots in that strike zone.
- 1:04:54It will be the most effective for him, keeping the ball low primarily.
- 1:04:59The pitch, Fossey swings and pops it up behind short. Chalk says, come on in and get it, and Valentine says, I'm trying to fight the sun, makes the catch for the first out.
- 1:05:08Fossey with a routine fly to left, one out. Here's Rich McKinney, right-handed hitting third baseman.
- 1:05:25To give you an idea of the kind of stuff Lockwood has, in 72 he had two one-hit games. A man who can pitch that kind of ball game has to have great stuff.
- 1:05:38And when he can put that together with good control, Danes will feel that he might be the real key to the trade.
- 1:05:44First pitch in for a strike, comes right back and McKinney sends it very high to center field. McKinney watches the rivers coast in under it and makes the catch.
- 1:05:56Two gone as Lockwood induces Fossey and McKinney to fly out. And here's the number nine hitter Manny Trio, right-handed batting second baseman.
- 1:06:04He pops to Denny Doyle this first time out.
- 1:06:18Here's Lockwood, fidgets with a bill of that angel cap, now has his sign from Rodriguez as the pitch. Swung on, pops up again. Epstein near the bag, now comes down on the infield grass and makes the catch just in fair territory.
- 1:06:34So Lockwood had the A's hitting under his pitches in the fifth inning, as Fossey, McKinney, and Trio make out on the fly. One-two-three inning, and at the halfway mark of this one, four and a half innings in the book.
- 1:06:45It's the Angels three, the Oakland A's one.
- 1:06:49Well, as we've all learned, time and fuel are precious these days, so the Angels are making it mighty easy for you fans to purchase tickets to 1974 Angels action.
- 1:06:59More than 200 Angels outlets will be in operation beginning Monday. The Anaheim Stadium Box office will be open daily from nine until five-thirty.
- 1:07:08There are also convenient outlets in your area. It's the Mutual and Liberty agencies, the United California banks in Orange, Riverside, and in San Bernardino County.
- 1:07:17For choice seats, the Angels home game through May 12th. Why don't you chop early? Make it easy on yourself. Avoid the lines.
- 1:07:24The Big A advance window and all agencies open on Monday. And of course, that first Angel home stand.
- 1:07:30Now, this is the 9th of March. On the 9th of April, it will be the Texas Rangers in for the first three nights, then the White Sox in on Friday night, Saturday night, Sunday afternoon,
- 1:07:39and then the Minnesota Twins in Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday night. All those tickets, Texas, Chicago, Minnesota, on sale at more than 200 Angel outlets throughout Southern California.
- 1:07:50Why don't you come out early and come out often? Follow the Angels in 74.
- 1:07:57Denny Doyle will start it for the Californians in Southern Californians in the bottom of the fifth inning. Doyle is sacrificed and he is struck out.
- 1:08:05He faces the right-hander, Blue Moon Odom, gave a pair of runs to break the tie in the fourth. They play Doyle straight away.
- 1:08:13Odom gets his sign from catcher Tennes. Wines kicks the pitch. Ground ball up the middle. They hit the center field.
- 1:08:23Up with it is North, he gets it back into the cutoff man, and Denny Doyle has his first hit as an Angel.
- 1:08:30College single up the middle. Rings up left fielder Bobby Valentine, two for two. He singles to drive in a run in the first inning off side or right of Blue,
- 1:08:40and then single again to center field off Blue in the third. For the Angels, that's their seventh hit.
- 1:08:53Valentine closed stance, deep in the batter's box. Odom checks the runner. There goes Doyle. The pitch is swung on to miss.
- 1:08:59A throw by Tennes to second, and Doyle is out of there. So the hit and run backfires as Valentine Emily unable to make contact,
- 1:09:08and Tennes throws out Doyle at second. That's the second man that Tennes has gunned down.
- 1:09:20Manny Trio with a tag at second base, so Doyle is a race. Valentine with one strike on him, and now Odom goes to the full windup.
- 1:09:34The pitch slides it away one and one.
- 1:09:41Sal Bando now with the Oakland ball club, but he bruised the middle finger on his throwing hand and was sent to Oakland for X-rays.
- 1:09:49He's okay. High two and one to Valentine.
- 1:09:54Dick Green will be reporting to the A's camp in Mesa. After his perennial holdout, he has been satisfied with contract terms,
- 1:10:05but he's not with the club this weekend.
- 1:10:08The pitch by Odom. Valentine swings, rounds it foul past third, backhanded by McKinney.
- 1:10:14Two balls and two strikes on Bobby Valentine. One out, bottom of the fifth, three-one, the Angels lead the Oakland A's.
- 1:10:24Oakland storming past San Diego yesterday, 13-3 in Yuma. Jackson, Fossey, Darren Johnson, Homering, and Gene Tennes hit two,
- 1:10:32including a grand slammer.
- 1:10:36The wind, the 2-2 pitch. Valentine nubs it foul.
- 1:10:42Breaking ball away from Bobby.
- 1:10:46Oliver on deck.
- 1:10:50Rudy May getting in some running along the outfield fence in right field.
- 1:10:59Bummo Odom winds the 2-2 pitch. Change is lined into left field for another hit. Valentine is 3-3.
- 1:11:07The straight change didn't fool Valentine, and he's not been particular about where he's hit the ball.
- 1:11:12He's singled a knock-in around the right, then singled a center, and now he laces one to left field.
- 1:11:18What a kid.
- 1:11:21I believe the Angels that have him on the 25-man roster of Valentine had to hit out of a wheelchair.
- 1:11:27Oliver up. Angels with a couple of base hits here in the fifth inning that Doyle erased on the misfired hit-and-run.
- 1:11:36Foul, high, and out of play. Off to the right.
- 1:11:43A lot of construction here in the Angel Stadium area. They have leveled the parking lot and the rodeo area off to our right.
- 1:11:52Going to make a new auditorium, build a new auditorium here for the Springs.
- 1:11:59What a day. Big jet airliner back at the center field fence landing at the Palm Springs Airport.
- 1:12:08Pitch outside, one-and-one to Bob Oliver.
- 1:12:16Yes, sir, it has to go in the book as one of the beautiful sights that a person can see in this country of ours,
- 1:12:24to be in Palm Springs on a day like this with fantastic mountains, snow caps.
- 1:12:32I can't remember seeing more snow.
- 1:12:36They had over two feet up on the tramway here in Palm Springs yesterday.
- 1:12:41A pitch. Hold on a minute. Oliver trying to go to right field with first baseman Johnson holding on Valentine at first base,
- 1:12:49and a big gap that way. Bob could not make contact.
- 1:12:55One ball, two strikes to count. One out, Valentine at first base. Bottom of the fifth, 3-1 Angel.
- 1:13:01Odum sets, checks the runner. The pitch. Ground ball toward third, could be two. Up with it McKinney.
- 1:13:06Over to Trio for one. Back to first base, not in time to double up Oliver.
- 1:13:10And again, Trio very nearly came off the bag too soon at second base.
- 1:13:15Valentine limps off as again he is forced to go into that hard slide breaking up the double play.
- 1:13:22He's getting a chance to test that leg in a hurry here in the spring.
- 1:13:29Two gone. Oliver safe on the fielder's choice.
- 1:13:32And here's Mike Epstein. He's flying to center. A fine play by Bill North, a diving backhanded cat.
- 1:13:38And Mike Wacht to lead off the two around the fourth inning. The Angels game to lead 3-1.
- 1:13:44Johnson a step behind Oliver at first. Odum checks there anyway the pitch.
- 1:13:50Breaking ball for a strike. Tickets for Angels home games through May the 12th go on sale Monday at the Anaheim Stadium box office.
- 1:13:58And more than 200 outlets in Southern California. Remember the big eight ticket hours are 9 to 5.30 every day.
- 1:14:05The pitch, Epstein not going up the third base line and a curl foul.
- 1:14:11Just queued that one off the end of the stick. Two strikes on big Mike.
- 1:14:16Ali Brown would be next.
- 1:14:21The Angels with a total of eight hits. Two in the first.
- 1:14:27And then two more in each of the last three innings.
- 1:14:32Hatfield deep toward right.
- 1:14:35Odum is ready. Looks over at Oliver. Two strike pitch. Breaking ball too close.
- 1:14:42One and two.
- 1:14:45Buddy Herzog down at third base. Shouting some encouragement to Epstein.
- 1:14:51Skipper of the Rangers last year and a welcome addition to Bobby Winkle's staff here in 74.
- 1:14:58Odum's one-two delivery. Change chess misses inside.
- 1:15:02It appeared to be high enough. Caught the knees but just off the inner edge.
- 1:15:16Oliver edges off the bag at first base. Two outs. There he goes. The pitch swung on. Eight hits.
- 1:15:21Center field. Oliver keeps trying on to go on to third as Epstein delivers the hit.
- 1:15:27North runs the ball in from center field. It was hit off the end of the bat but had great direction.
- 1:15:33Right over the pitcher's head, Odum landed at the edge of the outfield grass and rolled to a stop in shallow center field.
- 1:15:39Oliver running all the way. The Angels have three more hits here in the fifth inning but have yet to score.
- 1:15:44Epstein with his first hit of the spring and that's now a total of nine in the game for the Angels.
- 1:15:50Five of them off Odum in two innings.
- 1:15:53Olly Brown, he's singled the Texas Laker to left field off Odum in the last inning.
- 1:16:00Runners at the corners, two outs. Odum from the stretch and the pitch.
- 1:16:08Brown looks at a strike. A good fast ball.
- 1:16:12Final at Vero Beach in ten innings. Atlanta beat the Dodgers four to three.
- 1:16:16Home runs in that game. Steve Garvey with a solo homer for the Dodgers and Mike Plumb with a two-run blast for the Braves.
- 1:16:21Four to three, Atlanta wins at Vero Beach in ten.
- 1:16:25The pitch, swung on and missed. Another fast ball on the outside corner.
- 1:16:30Two strikes and Brown and Odum goes to the fast ball.
- 1:16:37Three-one, the Angels lead.
- 1:16:39Now to score, Philadelphia leading Boston 2-1 after two innings.
- 1:16:442-1 Cleveland over the Giants after two.
- 1:16:46Ground ball toward short. Into the hole goes Campon Earth. It's played a second base in time for the outs.
- 1:16:51And that's it for the Angels. So they have a three-hit inning without scoring and they leave two.
- 1:16:56And after five, Angels three, DAs one.

- 1:18:05Kansas City 8 with the White Sox 3 in the sixth inning.
- 1:18:09They're called to Tucson, Cleveland with a 2-1 lead over the San Francisco Giants in the third.
- 1:18:13At Yuma, Arizona, Western College, one San Diego Pondres nothing after one.
- 1:18:19And we'll double-check on some of the basketball action, the first round of the NCAA playoffs as well.
- 1:18:24The court shows here that game, USC, UCLA tonight here on most of these same stations.
- 1:18:31Bill North, switch hitter.
- 1:18:33He walked and scored the A's run in the first inning, tries to bun his way on and fouls it off against the screen behind the dugout of the A's on the third-base side.
- 1:18:43North walked in the first inning, leading off against Bill Singer, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice and came home on a base hit by Reggie Jackson for the A's run.
- 1:18:53Lockwood winds the pitch, in at the feet of North, it's 1-1.
- 1:19:05Nolan Ryan, Frank Kanana, Rick Shan tomorrow for the Angels, and we see Hic Lang, right-hander, beginning to warm up for the Angels.
- 1:19:14He probably will pitch just one inning.
- 1:19:16Also down in the corner, John Doherty, Morris Nettle's a couple of rookies getting ready as if they might be coming in.
- 1:19:23Breaking ball hangs high and away, and it's 2-1 to Bill North.
- 1:19:30Angel pitching, allowing only two base hits through five.
- 1:19:34Ground ball up the middle, knocked down by Lockwood.
- 1:19:36He races after, picks it up, fires the first and gets in.
- 1:19:38Good play.
- 1:19:45Bill North with a low-line drive to the glove side of Lockwood.
- 1:19:49Good actions by Skip.
- 1:19:50He reached down, knocked the ball down, floated down, and rolled behind him, down in the grass behind him on, and Lockwood, spinning away, was able to get to the ball in time and fire a strike to Epstein just in front of Bill North.
- 1:20:04One up.
- 1:20:05The pitch to Campaneras is a strike, a fastball call.
- 1:20:10Lockwood has retired four men in a row.
- 1:20:15Right-hander ready, pumps, the pitch.
- 1:20:18Swung on and fouled high over our head.
- 1:20:20Two strikes on Campaneras.
- 1:20:22Joe Rudy on deck for Oakland.
- 1:20:28Most of the seats occupied today at Angel Stadium.
- 1:20:33Fans enjoying this first game on spring.
- 1:20:38The pitch, breaking ball bounces in off Rodriguez's shin guard.
- 1:20:44One and two.
- 1:20:53Good to see one of the great men in baseball, Freddie Fitzsimmons.
- 1:21:00Giants and the Dodgers, the Braves, ground ball, the third.
- 1:21:04The Dodgers cover up with it easily on the second half and fires the Epstein for the yard.
- 1:21:08Two away.
- 1:21:12Five in a row, retired by Lockwood, and stepping in left fielder Joe Rudy.
- 1:21:16And this reminder that Angel's baseball is brought to you by Standard Stations and Chevron Dealers.
- 1:21:21Here's another Chevron Maximum Mileage Tip.
- 1:21:24Use your car's air conditioner only when absolutely necessary because optional equipment such as air conditioners can actually cut down on your gasoline mileage.
- 1:21:35Rudy is struck out and grounded to Oliver.
- 1:21:38Lockwood winds the pitch.
- 1:21:40Little low, right down the middle but below the knees of Rudy.
- 1:21:45Tall, right-handed batter.
- 1:21:50Outfield plays Rudy straight away, infield the same.
- 1:21:54He hits all field.
- 1:21:56The pitch bowled out of play and it's one and one.
- 1:21:59Good pitch by Lockwood. He kept that ball away from Rudy.
- 1:22:14Reggie Jackson would be next going on.
- 1:22:16Angel's lead, three to one, two outs and the Oakland six spinning as Lockwood kicks and deals.
- 1:22:21A long drive to left field. Back goes Valentine. Back, back, back. It's over his head against the fence.
- 1:22:26One hop against the fence and Valentine plays it cleanly into second base but there's Rudy with a stand-up double.
- 1:22:35Now the Oakland fans have a chance to hear a Chalovic base hit out the bat of Joe Rudy as he lines one over left fielder Bobby Valentine's head.
- 1:22:45Two outs. That brings the tying run to the plate.
- 1:22:48Reggie Jackson who is two for two.
- 1:22:51Until Rudy's hit, Jackson, the only man with a base hit in the Oakland lineup.
- 1:22:56He looks an RBI single to center field to drive him the ace only run in the first inning and grounded one sharply through the right side his last time up against Rudy May.
- 1:23:07Lockwood from the set position, the pitch.
- 1:23:10Low, bow on, a fast ball.
- 1:23:13Outfield, a round toward right and deep.
- 1:23:16It's three sixty-three down the lines here in Palm Springs so if you hit one out you hit the ball hard.
- 1:23:24Four hundred feet to center field.
- 1:23:28Rudy from second, tucking in behind him, the shortstop Dave Chucks or Lockwood backs off the rubber.
- 1:23:37Quickly played game, we're in the sixth inning, the ball game not quite an hour old.
- 1:23:43Lockwood ready, the pitch. Jackson takes it high, two and oh.
- 1:23:47You can see Reggie coiling up as if he's going to lash out.
- 1:23:51Try to tie it with one swing. Two and oh to count.
- 1:23:55Gene Tennes on deck.
- 1:24:03Two gone, Rudy out at second base, Lockwood looks back at him and the two oh pitch.
- 1:24:08Jackson looks at it in the dirt.
- 1:24:11Three and oh, that one took a funny bounce in the dirt off the shin guard of Rodriguez and then skipped up and hit Jackson in the jaw.
- 1:24:19Fortunately at that point most of the velocity out of that pitch.
- 1:24:27Awesome NCAA scores of interest and in the Big Ten in particular, Indiana 80, Purdue 79, a final.
- 1:24:38The Hoosiers beat the Boilermakers by one.
- 1:24:41The pitch.
- 1:24:43Round balls, no Doyle can't get it, he'll throw up his pin.
- 1:24:47Here comes Rudy around third, the throw to the plate, going to be close.
- 1:24:50He is safe. No he's out.
- 1:24:54Here comes the miss the plate.
- 1:24:57The late call, Rudy miss the plate. He didn't fly and knowing was helping him out.
- 1:25:02And Rodriguez plays the old statue game.
- 1:25:06He aftered his own, there was no play coming in.
- 1:25:09The ball came off Doyle's leg, rolled behind second.
- 1:25:12Shot to shortstop, range to his left, picked it up, fired into Rodriguez.
- 1:25:17Rudy had he made a fly, would have beaten it easily, but came in fanning, tried to leap over Rodriguez,
- 1:25:24missed the plate and Rodriguez made the tag for an out.
- 1:25:27A big play as the Angels escape the six without an Oakland run scoring.
- 1:25:32No run, two hit, you have to give Jackson a base hit on the play and one man left.
- 1:25:39And after five and a half it remains Angels three Oakland one.
- 1:25:52There's a special kind of beer, maybe you know it, but why?
- 1:26:00It was created nearly a century ago by people who really cared about things.
- 1:26:06They liked brewing a quality beer no matter what the cost.
- 1:26:11In time, in ingredients, in anything.
- 1:26:20Today the Budweiser people still think that's worth caring about.
- 1:26:24They're making sure that caring isn't just a memory.
- 1:26:33Every taste of Beechwood aged Budweiser says so and always will.
- 1:26:40Ah, and when you say Budweiser, you've said it all.
- 1:26:50They have officially ruled that Doyle be charged with an error.
- 1:26:54There was a twisting soft liner to Doyle's right, he could not quite come up with it,
- 1:26:59but the Angels get the out of the plate anyway and it remains three to one.
- 1:27:02Dave Nehouss, Don Drysdale and Palm Springs, bottom of the sixth, here's Dave.
- 1:27:06Thank you, Dick.
- 1:27:07Richie Scheinblum leads it off and takes a change curve for a strike for the Angels.
- 1:27:11A three to one ball game, the Angels lead the A's in a fast play ball game in the bottom half of the sixth.
- 1:27:17John Blumman, Odom, going into his third inning of work and the fifth to Scheinblum, a high floater.
- 1:27:22Boy, he really pulled his string on that one.
- 1:27:24Odom with a big motion and then almost arced the ball across the plate.
- 1:27:28It was across the plate but it was high.
- 1:27:33Ball and a strike and Odom's pitch flung on and a fly ball to right field coming in and sprinting on the ball.
- 1:27:38Now holding up his right fielder, Reggie Jackson.
- 1:27:40He makes the back for out number one.
- 1:27:43One up and one away, that will bring along Ellie Rodriguez.
- 1:27:46That will bring you along for station identification.
- 1:27:48This is the Angels Radio Network.
- 1:27:51Helping handicapped children brightens everyone's future.
- 1:27:54Give your helping hand through Easter Seals.
- 1:27:56Your gift to Easter Seals will last a lifetime.
- 1:27:59This is KXTC Glendale Phoenix.
- 1:28:07Ellie Rodriguez for the Angels.
- 1:28:09Odom into the line and a pitch to Ellie, a fast ball outside.
- 1:28:12Ball one, one ball and no strikes.
- 1:28:13Rodriguez drove in a run in the fourth inning with a sacrifice line drive to center fielder Bill North.
- 1:28:20He's right out to North in the second.
- 1:28:23So he's all for one.
- 1:28:25Odom's one-all pitch to him.
- 1:28:27Strike over the outside corner.
- 1:28:29A Chinese call by home plate umpire Dave Phillips.
- 1:28:32Phillips himself on his very warm afternoon in Palm Springs.
- 1:28:36A little conditioning program as he is in a warm-up jacket behind the plate.
- 1:28:40And the pitch, a curve blowing outside.
- 1:28:42Two balls and a strike to Rodriguez.
- 1:28:45John Blue Moon Odom.
- 1:28:48The A's defensively have McKinney at third.
- 1:28:50Chappanare's short.
- 1:28:51Trio is at second.
- 1:28:53And Aaron Johnson around at first.
- 1:28:55The 2-1 pitch now to Rodriguez.
- 1:28:57Line drive.
- 1:28:58They pitch center field and the older guy really popped one into center field on about three or four hops to center fielder Bill North.
- 1:29:05But for the Angels, they continue to pound the ball.
- 1:29:10That is their tenth hit in the ball game.
- 1:29:14And their sixth hit off of Blue Moon Odom.
- 1:29:17With one down, we'll see how manager Bobby Winkle's pleasure with David Chalk adds to play.
- 1:29:22Chalk has flied out and struck out over two.
- 1:29:26Right-handed batter.
- 1:29:29Odom at the belt.
- 1:29:30Checking Rodriguez at first.
- 1:29:31Goes to first base.
- 1:29:32Back in plenty of time standing up as Ellie.
- 1:29:36Mickey Rivers will be next.
- 1:29:39The Angels with one run in the first to tie and then two in the fourth to go ahead.
- 1:29:43Throw to first base again and back just standing up as Ellie Rodriguez.
- 1:29:48We remind you that Angels baseball is brought to you by Bush.
- 1:29:50Great ingredients make a great beer.
- 1:29:52Bush is brewed with the best of six-year-old barley imported and then to cup.
- 1:29:56The pitcher Chalk is down first.
- 1:30:00One ball on David Chalk.
- 1:30:03Bush is brewed the natural way to deliver that natural beer taste.
- 1:30:09Bush.
- 1:30:11Odom checks Rodriguez at first.
- 1:30:13There he goes.
- 1:30:14The pitcher's swung on and missed the throw through to second base three or pulls it down.
- 1:30:17Not in time.
- 1:30:18The throw is on the first base side of second base.
- 1:30:21Matty Trillo almost overran the ball, had to reach back and catch it.
- 1:30:25And then Ellie Rodriguez slid in underneath the tag.
- 1:30:28So Rodriguez, who is certainly not noted for his speed, picks up his first steal of 1974 in the Cactus League.
- 1:30:36The Angels have a runner at second base with one out.
- 1:30:40One-on-one on David Chalk and the pitcher has swung on and caps off the plate at the third base line foul.
- 1:30:44Two strikes.
- 1:30:46One ball and two strikes.
- 1:30:47Whitey Herzog throws it over to Rich McKinney playing it third for the A's.
- 1:30:53We mentioned earlier and a couple of times throughout the broadcast,
- 1:30:56Al Bando is suffering a bone bruise on the middle finger of his right hand while taking batting practice for the A's earlier in the week.
- 1:31:05One and two on Chalk.
- 1:31:07Rodriguez with his lead.
- 1:31:09Odom comes to the plate.
- 1:31:10A fastball is capped off the plate.
- 1:31:11Coach Shortstop, Kapaneris charges, picks, throws.
- 1:31:14Just in time to get David Chalk and easily on the play down to third goes Ellie Rodriguez.
- 1:31:20It's a strong throw from Burt Kapaneris.
- 1:31:23Just a nip gave Chalk his first big.
- 1:31:27The Angels with a fourth run of the ball game only 90 feet away.
- 1:31:32And here's Mickey Rivers.
- 1:31:34Mickey, a pair of doubles his first two times up.
- 1:31:38Mickey doubles off the midsection of Bill North and center field his first time and then hit one in the gap in the third.
- 1:31:47And the pitch to Mickey, a fastball inside.
- 1:31:49One ball and no strikes and then he's capped out to Shortstop, Burt Kapaneris his last time up.
- 1:31:56Mickey Charles Rivers.
- 1:31:58The Miami Greyhounds.
- 1:32:00He can run.
- 1:32:01The stretch.
- 1:32:04Mickey waits and the pitch now, fastball a little over in the shallow left field but playing him perfectly is Joe Rudy.
- 1:32:09He's there, backs up a couple of steps to pull it down to retire the tie.
- 1:32:13So in the sixth the Angels again turn to side on a base hit.
- 1:32:18They move a man as far as third base in the person of Ellie Rodriguez.
- 1:32:23No Oakland errors.
- 1:32:24The Angels leave one.
- 1:32:25The Angels have left at least one man in every inning.
- 1:32:28They left two in the fifth and after six.
- 1:32:31The Angels three and the Oakland A's have one.
- 1:32:35What is good service all about?
- 1:32:37Well, I'll cut it.
- 1:32:39The mechanic who takes your trouble to explain what went wrong with your engine and then drives you around the block until you're satisfied.
- 1:32:45It's running as good as new.
- 1:32:47Never mind, he's already late for lunch by that time.
- 1:32:50Or it's the bank teller who finds you $5 worth of change for your son's coin collection even though her cash drawer is really close today.
- 1:32:58That, my friends, is good service.
- 1:33:00And so is Continental Airlines.
- 1:33:03They still believe that if they do a little more for you a lot faster, you'll come back and fly them again and again.
- 1:33:10Continental has more flights between Los Angeles and Houston than any other airline.
- 1:33:14A total of 12 flights a day, including three non-stops and DC-10 service with economy fairs available on every one.
- 1:33:23So call your travel agent or Continental Airlines, the proud bird with the golden tail.
- 1:33:29Remember, they really move their tail to give you good service.
- 1:33:33That includes daily service from Los Angeles to Kansas City, too.
- 1:33:39The new angel pitcher will be Richard Otto Lange, a young man from Michigan with a broad shoulders and a good fastball.
- 1:33:48So skip lock with those two innings.
- 1:33:50Gives up no runs on one hit.
- 1:33:53Did not walk a man.
- 1:33:55Nor strike out a man.
- 1:33:57Angel pitching has been superb.
- 1:33:59Pitch on the way to the Oakland leadoff man here in the seventh inning, Gene Tennant, is a slider outside.
- 1:34:04One ball and no strikes.
- 1:34:06The Angels, the single run in the first, two in the fourth, the A's were the only run in the first.
- 1:34:10The line in the pitch to Tennant by Lange swings.
- 1:34:13And it's a snicking fastball.
- 1:34:15One ball and one strike.
- 1:34:17Lange, last year with the Angels after being called up from Salt Lake City, did quite well.
- 1:34:25Tennant right down on the knob of the bat.
- 1:34:27Dick Lange's 1-1 delivery to him now.
- 1:34:29A fastball strike called and that had some mustard on it over the outside edge.
- 1:34:33One and two on Gene Tennant.
- 1:34:40Lange checking with Rodriguez.
- 1:34:42The wind and the pitch on the way just checked his swing, took it outside, hit Tennant.
- 1:34:50Lange, 1-2 and lost one with the Big Club last year.
- 1:34:54He was 7-6 while pitching at Salt Lake City.
- 1:34:59The line by Lange and the pitch swung on, ripped foul down the third baseline,
- 1:35:02backhanded by a member of the A's and a bullpen.
- 1:35:05Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:35:07The Angels have made some defensive changes.
- 1:35:11Sandy Alomar has gone into play second base.
- 1:35:14Bob Oliver is still at third.
- 1:35:16Schalk is still at shortstop.
- 1:35:19And the pitch swung on and kept foul at the plate.
- 1:35:22I believe it's John Doherty over at first.
- 1:35:25For the Angels in the outfield as we check it.
- 1:35:29Sam Ashford has gone into left field.
- 1:35:33Lee Stanton is in right field.
- 1:35:35And Neville's, Ward-Sendleton Center, swung on, pops up over our heads, back out of play.
- 1:35:41Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:35:45So I'd rather doubt if you're keeping score with us in this first broadcast of the year,
- 1:35:50but if you are, you may make those changes.
- 1:35:55Richard Othold Lange.
- 1:35:57He counts two balls and two strikes on tennis.
- 1:36:00Broad-shouldered right-handed livers and a ground ball toward the hole, cut off by Oliver.
- 1:36:03He straightens up and Big Bob throws out Gene Kenneth.
- 1:36:06One down.
- 1:36:12So Doherty is at first.
- 1:36:14Sandy Alomar at second.
- 1:36:18Maoli has gone in to play shortstop instead of David Chopp.
- 1:36:22Oliver is the only remaining starter in the infield.
- 1:36:28Sam Ashford in left field.
- 1:36:33Here's Darren Johnson and the pitch to him by Lange is strike call, 0-1.
- 1:36:37Morris Neville is in center.
- 1:36:40And Lee Stanton is in right.
- 1:36:45The wind and the pitch to Johnson changed, hammered high straightaway left center field.
- 1:36:50Coming in on the ball is Ashford.
- 1:36:52Sam shielding his face from that hot desert glare and makes a catch.
- 1:36:57Two down.
- 1:36:59Here's Ray Fossey.
- 1:37:00Fossey was hit by a pitch off by Bill Singer in the second inning and then he flied out to left.
- 1:37:08The mule, most likeable young man that bought himself a home during the offseason in the Bay Area in Danville, California.
- 1:37:16The pitch swung on, a little looper in the center field off the fifth.
- 1:37:19Charging in a hurry, his nettle, he's got outstanding speed, but even he cannot get to that ball as it drops in front of him for a base hit.
- 1:37:28Fossey talking to him, said he bought the house and it was an old home, I guess something out of the Victorian era or something like that.
- 1:37:35Fossey did not realize that he had any carpentering ability, but he spent almost every hour awake refurbishing that new house.
- 1:37:44And he said he got quite a bit of self-satisfaction out of it.
- 1:37:50Rich McKinney has popped up and flied out to center, right at it better.
- 1:37:55The pitch by Lang, a fastball taken low and outside.
- 1:38:00The Angels now with ten base hits.
- 1:38:05Angel pitching has given up five.
- 1:38:11Flying at the belt, steps back off now as he drives Fossey closer to the bag being held on by young John Doherty at first base.
- 1:38:20This young man is a great promise for the future for the Angels playing first right now.
- 1:38:25The pitch, McKinney takes low and outside.
- 1:38:29We'll have to wait and see how manager Bobby Winkles has made the changes as far as the lineup is concerned when they come to bat.
- 1:38:37If it's straight up and down, Alomar would lead off the bottom half of the seventh for the Angels that second day.
- 1:38:43The stretch in the pitch, McKinney swings and lashes it foul off the head of the bat down the right field line.
- 1:38:49Quite tremendous turnout on opening day here on Palm Springs, just about every seat taken.
- 1:38:54And the bleachers down the left field line and down the right field line, not to enjoy the sun.
- 1:39:01Yesterday morning when Don and Dick and I left for Holtville, the CD Angels played the Chicago Cubs who was drizzling quite heavily.
- 1:39:09And we didn't get out of the rain until we got almost in El Centro.
- 1:39:13And the snow level is very low here in the Springs making a spectacular background.
- 1:39:18The pitch swung on and driven high into center field straight away.
- 1:39:21Neville's coming in on the ball, Morris is there, and he makes the catch to retire the side.
- 1:39:26So in the seventh for the Californians, or rather for the Oakland A's, they come up with no runs on a base hit.
- 1:39:36No Angel errors and they leave one.
- 1:39:38And as we go to the bottom half of the seventh inning, it's the Angels three and the A's have one.
- 1:39:43There's a kind of taste which finds its expression in Monte Carlo by Chevrolet.
- 1:39:51A kind of reassured sense of classiness that is both dignified and sassy.
- 1:39:58For those who appreciate fine Chevrolet engineering and who have a feeling for automotive styling, there is Monte Carlo for 74.
- 1:40:11When you invest in a new car, you've got a right to have the car you really want.
- 1:40:16The car which fulfills your needs, which lives up to the quality your taste demands.
- 1:40:22If you're the kind of person whose artistic sense requires a well-engineered, elegantly styled automobile,
- 1:40:28you'll find it makes sense to take a good look at Monte Carlo.
- 1:40:35After all, transportation is much more than just getting there.
- 1:40:40Chevrolet makes sense for America.
- 1:40:44Number 32, Darrell, bottom of the eighth inning.
- 1:40:51Go to the bottom half of the seventh.
- 1:40:53The Oakland A's pitch their third man of the afternoon.
- 1:40:57The veteran left-hander, Darrell Noe, Sandy Alomar to lead it off.
- 1:41:01Little switch hitter batting right-handed against Noe.
- 1:41:03There's a line in the pitch by Darrell.
- 1:41:04It swung on and ripped on one hop to the shortstop.
- 1:41:06Down with a tailgate is a new Oakland shortstop. We'll have to get him.
- 1:41:10That's not Bert Campanaris out there at short right now.
- 1:41:14It is number 20 who happens to be Jack Heideman.
- 1:41:18So Heideman is the new shortstop.
- 1:41:22Alomar has gone 6-3.
- 1:41:26Left-hander, Darrell Noe.
- 1:41:30Here's a young man, Sam Ashford, the pitch to him.
- 1:41:34Back ball down a long way.
- 1:41:36One ball and no strike.
- 1:41:39Ashford, just a youngster.
- 1:41:44Samuel Lee Ashford, Jr., the sweeping curve, is low and outside to the tall left-handed batter.
- 1:41:49He's 6'1", 180 pounds.
- 1:41:51From Ensley, Alabama, and last year at Salt Lake City, he hit a robust 3-5-0.
- 1:41:57The line in the pitch to Ashford, curve high and outside.
- 1:42:01Two balls. They have a strike out there to Ashford.
- 1:42:05Ashford had two home runs and 25 RBIs. He played in only 40 games with Salt Lake City, 73 games with El Paso.
- 1:42:12And the pitch to Sam jammed him inside and low. Ball three. Three balls and a strike.
- 1:42:17At El Paso, Ashford hit 3-36.
- 1:42:22Had four home runs, 37 RBIs.
- 1:42:26Ashford will be 23 years of age on the 22nd of this month, and he swings and pops it up into foul territory.
- 1:42:32Third baseman for the A's goes over near, tries the backhand and can't do it.
- 1:42:36A's also have a new third baseman.
- 1:42:39Manny Treo has moved over from second to play third.
- 1:42:48Which, of course, means we have a new second baseman.
- 1:42:51Treo is at third. Heidemann is at second.
- 1:42:55There is nightmare here in the early games, of course, when the managers try to give all the youngsters a chance to play.
- 1:43:00Three balls and two strikes on Sam Ashford.
- 1:43:06Ashford runs well and obviously carries a good bat.
- 1:43:09The three-two pitch is a chain, swung on and missed.
- 1:43:11So Ashford strikes out against the veteran left-hander, Darryl Knowles.
- 1:43:15Two down, and here's Bob Oliver.
- 1:43:21Subiak at second base, taking over from Manny Treo, who moves to third.
- 1:43:33Big Bob Oliver, rounded into a double play, popped out.
- 1:43:37He's on on the fielder's choice.
- 1:43:39The wind in the pitch to Ali.
- 1:43:41Low and outside, ball one.
- 1:43:42One ball and no strikes.
- 1:43:45Susilo has gone into left field for Oakland.
- 1:43:51The wind in the pitch, way outside.
- 1:43:54Two balls and no strikes to Oliver.
- 1:43:59Angel Mangual has gone into center, and Vic D'Avalio is in right.
- 1:44:07The two-all pitch to Bob Oliver by Darryl Knowles.
- 1:44:09The curve is swinging in a mess, breaking in on the fist of the big fella.
- 1:44:12Two balls and a strike.
- 1:44:13The Angels with a run in the first, two in the fourth,
- 1:44:17and the Angels have out hit the Oakland A's ten to five.
- 1:44:24Knowles checking with his battery mate, says okay,
- 1:44:27and the two-one delivery now to Bob Oliver is a fastball,
- 1:44:30ram toward third, backing up on the ball and backing in.
- 1:44:33It is Treo, the long throw, just in time to get Oliver.
- 1:44:37Treo having a little problem with it, backhanding and dropping,
- 1:44:40but still having time to pick it up and throw out Bob Oliver,
- 1:44:42and the Angels gone one, two, three here in the seventh.
- 1:44:45A run, no hits, no errors, nobody left, and after seven it's the Angels three, the A's one.
- 1:44:51Fans, here's a very simple Chevron maximum mileage tip.
- 1:44:54Forgetting to regularly replace your engine's air filter can waste valuable gasoline.
- 1:44:59The air filter can play a big part in engine efficiency and gasoline mileage.
- 1:45:03Its job is to keep dirt away from vital moving parts.
- 1:45:06But if the air filters aren't replaced regularly,
- 1:45:09they can collect too much dirt and become clogged.
- 1:45:11When that happens to your air filter, it slowly chokes off the engine's air flow,
- 1:45:15and that can mean a drop in mileage.
- 1:45:18It's happening in thousands of cars right now,
- 1:45:20and it could be easily avoided by relying on the know-how of your Chevron standard man.
- 1:45:25He'll recommend the proper intervals for changing your air filter,
- 1:45:28as well as the right Atlas filter for your car and driving conditions.
- 1:45:32And remember, standard stations and most Chevron dealers also carry quality Atlas tires,
- 1:45:36batteries, and other accessories designed to meet your driving needs.
- 1:45:41For more Chevron maximum mileage tips, rely on the experienced men at Chevron dealers
- 1:45:46and standard stations all along the Chevron way.
- 1:45:52We go to the eighth inning of play here at Angels Stadium in Palm Springs.
- 1:45:55On this lovely afternoon, the Angels have a 3-1 lead over the Oakland A's.
- 1:45:59Going into his second inning of work is Dick Lang.
- 1:46:01Manny Trejo leads it off for the Oakland A's.
- 1:46:03And for more play, again, here's Big D.
- 1:46:05All right, thank you very much, David.
- 1:46:07As Dick Lang delivers a fastball, taking on the outside corner for called strike one.
- 1:46:11Has his sign right back, and one strike pitch foul right back up over our head.
- 1:46:16Oh, Rick's still amazing.
- 1:46:18The new catcher for the California Angels, trying to set the defense again.
- 1:46:23Oliver at third, Maoli at short, Alomar at second, Doherty at first.
- 1:46:27Here's Lang's two-strike pitchers slider just outside for ball one.
- 1:46:31One ball and two strikes.
- 1:46:33On field, Sam Ashford in left, Morris Nettles in center, and Lee Stanton right.
- 1:46:38The battery of still amazing in line.
- 1:46:42McWine, the next pitchers slider just outside for ball two.
- 1:46:45The count evens up at two and two.
- 1:46:49Now that is one thing here in the spring you kind of have to bear with us
- 1:46:54because that's when you see just about every member of that 40-man squad.
- 1:46:58The next pitch slider, got him looking, strike three call.
- 1:47:01The Manny Trio looks at a good slider by Dick Lang,
- 1:47:05and that is at number one for the A's in the eighth inning.
- 1:47:09We will go to the top of the order, and the new center fielder taking over for Bill North will be Angel Manguel.
- 1:47:16But talking about these full rosters, these managers have to take a look at every player.
- 1:47:22They want to see what they can do, so consequently it takes us a while to catch up on all the changes.
- 1:47:28The first pitch by Dick Lang is a breaking pitch outside for ball one.
- 1:47:36Lang Wines, the 1-0 pitch, taking low with a fastball, ball two.
- 1:47:47Manguel, last year in 74 games with the A's, hit 224.
- 1:47:53Lang Wines, here's the 2-0 pitch, that's taken low for ball three.
- 1:48:02Now Lang, after striking out Trio, falls behind Manguel, three balls and no strikes.
- 1:48:07Angel looks down at his third base, coach Ervin Norton, stands back in, here's the 3-0 pitch, that's high.
- 1:48:12He walked him on four straight pitches.
- 1:48:18That's the first base on balls given up by Dick Lang, just the second by Angel pitching this afternoon,
- 1:48:26which is very, very good at this phase of the spring.
- 1:48:31And Jack Heidemann, the new shortstop, will be the hitter.
- 1:48:35Lang working from the belt to pitch to Heidemann, ground ball to Oliver, backs up, plays it on a tricky hop,
- 1:48:40he goes to Alomar for one, back to Dornier, double play.
- 1:48:44Nice play by Bob Oliver, he stayed right with that in between hop, got the handle, and the Angels turn over the double play.
- 1:48:52The A's are gone in the eighth inning, no runs, no hits, no errors and nobody left.
- 1:48:57And the score after seven and one half, it's the Angels three and the A's one.
- 1:49:03When you say Budweiser, somebody still cares about quality.
- 1:49:14To the Budweiser people, that's a lot more than just words, it's a commitment and a promise to everyone who enjoys great beer.
- 1:49:23Like you, they're making sure that caring isn't just a memory.
- 1:49:29And every taste of Beechwood-age Budweiser says so, and always will.
- 1:49:35When you say Bud, you tell the world you know what makes it all the way.
- 1:49:42When you say Bud, you say you care enough to only want the king of beer.
- 1:49:50There is no other one, there's only something left, because the king of beer is leading the rest.
- 1:50:00When you say Budweiser, you've said it all.
- 1:50:06We move along now to the last half of the eighth inning, John Doherty, young left-hand hitting first baseman standing in.
- 1:50:13Darryl Nose delivers a breaking pitch outside for ball one, the catcher Ken Hoseley, the new catcher for the Oakland A's.
- 1:50:24Nose has the sign, winds, and the next pitch is swung on and missed a fastball strike, one-one ball, one strike.
- 1:50:39John Michael Doherty from Warburn, Massachusetts, next pitch a curveball taken for called strike two, one ball, two strikes.
- 1:50:48He's a 5'11", 185-pounder, he bats from the left side the same as he throws.
- 1:50:54The next pitch a little ground ball, back to Nose, off his leg, and he cannot make a play.
- 1:51:04We'll have to see how they score it. That ball right back to Darryl Nose, it stayed down on him, it did not come up.
- 1:51:12I believe that they will probably score that an error, but whatever, John Doherty is at first base.
- 1:51:21Nobody out, and Lee Stanton taking over for Olly Brown will be the hitter.
- 1:51:30That will be an error on the pitcher Darryl Nose.
- 1:51:36They'll set the pitch, the Stanton is fouled at the plate, 0-1.
- 1:51:42While Olly Brown was in there, Olly was one for three.
- 1:51:48Now it's Lee Stanton, on deck the designated hitter, Richie Shineblue.
- 1:52:05Nose leaning in, checking signs, into the stretch, the next pitch a good change, swung on and missed strike two.
- 1:52:14Darryl Nose pulling the string on Leroy Stanton, and he's ahead.
- 1:52:20The ball's in two strikes.
- 1:52:27Nobody out, and the Angel ate the infield and double play depth.
- 1:52:30Nose at the belt, checks the runner, the next pitch breaking pitch, hangs outside for ball one, one ball and two strikes.
- 1:52:38The infield for the A's now consists of Trio at third, Heidemann at short, Kubiak at second, and Darren Johnson at first.
- 1:52:48Nose goes over to first, and back in plenty of time is Doherty.
- 1:52:51The outfield of Alou Manguel and Davalio from left to right.
- 1:52:55Ken Osley behind the plate, Darryl Nose the third Oakland pitcher on the mound.
- 1:53:03Nose set, the next pitch to Stanton is foul away, just off of the glove of the catcher Ken Osley.
- 1:53:09Hounds at the glove, the ball going back to the backstop.
- 1:53:12Stanton remains with one ball and two strikes.
- 1:53:20On deck the switch hitting Richie Shineblue.
- 1:53:29Nose set, here's the one-two pitch that's fouled away again at the plate, and the count remains at one ball and two strikes.
- 1:53:42Lee Stanton last year hit 235 for the Angels.
- 1:53:47One thing that Angel management has been waiting for is Stanton to possibly come through with the bat power that they've been looking for.
- 1:53:56Next pitch, line drive, ripped up the alley in left center field, over in a hurry to get it is J. Alou on his way to third is Doherty.
- 1:54:03The throw goes by Kubiak, comes all the way to the plate, is picked up there by Ken Osley, and the Angels have runners at the corner.
- 1:54:12Doherty at third, and Lee Stanton at first base.
- 1:54:20Now the Angels leading three to one, trying to get some more.
- 1:54:23Runners at the corner, nobody gone, and they're half of the eighth.
- 1:54:26They lead it three to one, and Richie Shineblue standing in.
- 1:54:30Well, did you know that seven out of ten people who fly with Continental have flown them before, and that's certainly proof of their great service.
- 1:54:48Shineblue standing in, Noels first pitch, a change down low for ball one.
- 1:54:53The A's infield once again will move back.
- 1:54:56They will try and get the ground ball, they will try and get the double play, and with doing that, they will sacrifice a run possibly.
- 1:55:09Shineblue hitting from the right side off the left-handed pitching of Darryl Noels.
- 1:55:14Doherty at third, standing at first, the next pitch hit off the hands, and the third baseman trio goes to second for one.
- 1:55:21Kubiak drops the ball.
- 1:55:24Doherty scores, and David first base is Richie Shineblue.
- 1:55:30Well, there's a play right there.
- 1:55:33I don't know how much many trio has played third, but there just about is no way.
- 1:55:38That is a one ball right there.
- 1:55:41The infield will play back, they'll say make the ball be hit hard.
- 1:55:44That ball was not hit hard, and trio, possibly during the course of a year or after manager Alvin Dark might talk to him,
- 1:55:52should have come to the plate with that ball because he possibly could not have gotten the double play.
- 1:56:00One run in, and Rick still mashing, swings and fouls the first pitch right at the plate.
- 1:56:07Stanton is safe at second base as Kubiak dropped the ball.
- 1:56:19Shinebloom is at first with a feel of choice.
- 1:56:25And John Doherty scores.
- 1:56:27Here's the one strike, but there's a high drive hit deep to right center field.
- 1:56:30Going back, Manguo still going back.
- 1:56:33He shades his eyes with a glove, tagging at second, moving to third is Lee Stanton.
- 1:56:38As Manguo throws in behind the runner, Richie Shineblue, who had to huckle back into first base.
- 1:56:45Once again, the Angels have runners at the corner with Lee Stanton at third, Richie Shineblue at first.
- 1:56:53There's one gone, and Rudy Maoli will be the hitter.
- 1:57:00Rudy Maoli taking over for Dave Chock.
- 1:57:04Dave was over three on the afternoon.
- 1:57:06This will be Maoli's first time at bat this afternoon.
- 1:57:15The Angels four and the Oakland A's one.
- 1:57:22Rudy Maoli, born in Troy, New York, now makes his home in Covina.
- 1:57:28First pitch of breaking pitch outside for ball one.
- 1:57:31Rudy hits from the left side.
- 1:57:34Last year with the Angels at 2-23.
- 1:57:37They have two home runs, 23 RBI's.
- 1:57:46Johnson holding Shineblue at first.
- 1:57:48Noll sets the next pitch on the outside corner with a breaking pitch.
- 1:57:51County was up at one ball and one strike.
- 1:57:55Even with a bag at third off the line, a time call.
- 1:58:00The ball gets away out of the A's bullpen.
- 1:58:04Third baseman, Hank Morganweck, retrieves.
- 1:58:10Noll has his sign at the bell.
- 1:58:12Here's the one-one pitch.
- 1:58:13It's hit off the hands foul, curving down the left field side.
- 1:58:16Goes back and out of play.
- 1:58:19One of the fans here at Sun-Drenched Angels Stadium this afternoon as a souvenir.
- 1:58:26Boy, it's been a beautiful afternoon.
- 1:58:28It's just gotten prettier as the day has gone by.
- 1:58:34Started this morning, the clouds kind of moving through the pass that were in L.A. all yesterday.
- 1:58:40They moved on farther east.
- 1:58:42The sun is out.
- 1:58:43It is just beautiful.
- 1:58:47The one-two pitch line drive hit the right center field.
- 1:58:49Going over to Davalio.
- 1:58:51Makes the catch right off the shoe top.
- 1:58:53The throw back to first base.
- 1:58:54There's nobody there.
- 1:58:56Stanton scores and Shineblue hustling back to first base.
- 1:59:00Has to stay right there as the catcher, Ken Osley, backs up the play.
- 1:59:05So the Angels scoring another run.
- 1:59:08They now lead it 5-1.
- 1:59:11That will be a sacrifice and sacrifice fly for Rudy Maoli and an RBI.
- 1:59:26Fine catch in right field by Vic Davalio.
- 1:59:28He took that one right off of the shoe tops.
- 1:59:31Now there's a youngster right here that people are going to see a lot about.
- 1:59:34I think in Southern California, Morris Nettles.
- 1:59:37Nettles goes over to first and Shineblue is back.
- 1:59:47This young man from Los Angeles.
- 1:59:49First pitch of patch ball.
- 1:59:50Swung on and missed strike one.
- 1:59:52Nettles last year at El Paso hit 331.
- 1:59:55Led the league.
- 1:59:57Had the most hits with 156.
- 1:59:59And he stole more bases.
- 2:00:00He had 41.
- 2:00:06Rolls at the belt.
- 2:00:07Pitch to Nettles.
- 2:00:08A fastball.
- 2:00:09Swung on and missed strike two.
- 2:00:11Still the one thing you've got to try and help these youngsters along.
- 2:00:16Of course, they're anxious to play.
- 2:00:19They're playing against the world champions.
- 2:00:21They want to try and impress.
- 2:00:22But sometimes you've got to get them keyed down just a little bit.
- 2:00:28Ball is sliced down the left field line.
- 2:00:29That will curl back and out of play.
- 2:00:32They have to impress.
- 2:00:36They want to impress.
- 2:00:37And looking at it business-wise, the manager Harry Dalton sitting right next to me right now, they have to impress.
- 2:00:44And it's tough.
- 2:00:51Noles nods his head.
- 2:00:52Yes, Shine blew him away at first base.
- 2:00:54Pitch to Nettles.
- 2:00:55Curved ball.
- 2:00:56Got him looking just on the outside corner.
- 2:00:58Strike three.
- 2:00:59Noles didn't care for the call too much.
- 2:01:02Morris retired, but the Angels come up with two more runs on just one hit.
- 2:01:10There was an air, and one man left in the score after eight.
- 2:01:15It's the California Angels five and the Oakland A's one.
- 2:01:21Well, what is good service all about?
- 2:01:23I'll tell you what.
- 2:01:24The parking attendant who gives you the best spot, he saves that best spot in the whole garage,
- 2:01:30then finds a way to open your front window without breaking it after you've locked the keys inside the car.
- 2:01:35Or the laundry man who checks through seven other bundles in search for your missing cuff links.
- 2:01:40Never mind, it's past closing time.
- 2:01:42He's supposed to be taking his daughter to her ballet lesson.
- 2:01:45Then you go home and find the cuff links in your second drawer under the sock.
- 2:01:48Now that's good service.
- 2:01:50And so is Continental Airlines.
- 2:01:52They still believe that if you do a little more for your, well, if you can just do a little bit more for you,
- 2:01:58and they can do it a lot faster, and you'll come back and fly them again and again.
- 2:02:01Now how about Hawaii?
- 2:02:03Continental flies two nonstop DC-10s from Los Angeles to Honolulu every day,
- 2:02:09with economy fairs and plenty of island atmosphere on board.
- 2:02:13Call your travel agent or Continental Airlines, the proud bird with a golden tail.
- 2:02:18After all, they really move their tail to give you good service.
- 2:02:23And that includes daily service from Los Angeles to Houston, too.
- 2:02:28All right, we're set to go here at Angel Stadium.
- 2:02:38The California Angels are a four-run lead.
- 2:02:40We move to the top of the ninth inning, and Jay Allou will lead it off Dave Sells, the new pitcher.
- 2:02:46Allou going after the first pitch, a two-hopper to send the LMR.
- 2:02:50He throws him out.
- 2:02:53So one gone for the A's here in the ninth inning.
- 2:02:583,091, a fine turnout this afternoon.
- 2:03:07One gone, Vic D'Avalio will be the hitter.
- 2:03:13D'Avalio's short left-hand hitter reminds you so much of Mattie Allou.
- 2:03:18Sells winds the right-hander's first pitch, a fastball for a strike.
- 2:03:22Bob Oliver right up on the grass at third base.
- 2:03:33There's a line drive at the left field coming on Sam Ashford.
- 2:03:36Right there, makes the catch for out number two.
- 2:03:44Two gone, and Ken Hoseley, the catcher, will be the hitter.
- 2:04:02Hoseley, strong right-hand hitter, Dave Sells, one out away from preserving this win for the Angels, be their first to the spring.
- 2:04:11This is just their second game yesterday. They fell short two to one to the Chicago Cubs.
- 2:04:27The next pitcher called strike to Hoseley, one ball and one strike.
- 2:04:36Sells' next pitch is fouled at the plate. The count moves to one and two.
- 2:05:00Dave Sells' next pitch got him swinging strike three. Ken Hoseley strikes out, the ballgame is over.
- 2:05:06The Angels win the first of the spring against the world champion Oakland A's, the Angels five, and the Oakland A's one.
- 2:05:20You'll see the Nova Six makes sense today. Two, three, four. Count the doors of the Chevy Nova Six Two.

- 2:06:03Can you hear the numbers say the Nova Six makes sense today. Chevrolet makes sense for America.
- 2:06:20Well here are the totals for today's game. For the California Angels five runs on 11 hits they committed two errors and they leave eight.
- 2:06:28For the Oakland A's they have one run on four hits they commit one error they leave three.
- 2:06:33The winning pitcher was Rudy May and the losing pitcher was John Blue Moon Odom.
- 2:06:37And the attendance this afternoon, 3,091, a fine crowd here at Angel Stadium.
- 2:06:43As the Angels win the first game of the spring they are now one and one. This is their first win here at Angel Stadium.
