- 0:00laced up let's go it's time for banter with the
- 0:05boys welcome to gridiron updates hi with banter
- 0:19the boys that is jake Joining us tonight, Coach
- 0:25Smeltz, he's out sick. Get well soon. I am Roberto,
- 0:29vibrating in your drums. We also got Kevin behind
- 0:33the computer, slash camera, slash lights, everything
- 0:36else. And we're here to talk championship football.
- 0:43So, yeah, I totally lost where we're at right
- 0:47now. Buckle up. It was a good weekend. Yeah.
- 0:50Ready for it? Welcome back to Gridiron Updates.
- 1:08Jacob. Robbub. And Rob. Roberto. Bob. Whatever.
- 1:13Either way, we're here to talk some championship
- 1:15football. Yeah, we are. How did you enjoy this
- 1:18weekend? I really loved it. It was pretty solid.
- 1:22We had a lot of interesting things happen, weather
- 1:27-wise, impacting games, which is great to see
- 1:30this time of year. Where you have an open -roof
- 1:33stadium and you get weather impacting the outcome
- 1:36of the game. Well, it sounds like you're a rough
- 1:39guy, so we're going to avoid that conversation
- 1:41and move on to the AFC Championship, which was
- 1:44that weather game we were talking about. The
- 1:48New England Patriots sneak out a win against
- 1:52the Denver Broncos in Mile High. Overall thoughts
- 1:59of this game? It was pretty good. It was good.
- 2:05Yeah. Interesting first half of the game. Stidham
- 2:10made one mistake in the first half that kind
- 2:13of, I think, really. A bad one. Yeah. In totality,
- 2:17really cost the Broncos the game. And then I
- 2:22enjoyed seeing the snow actually come down. changed
- 2:26the the dynamic of the football game entirely
- 2:28it did making it like next to impossible to make
- 2:32field goals having to rely on a on a run game
- 2:35versus trying to just continue to throw the ball
- 2:38down the field Back to basic football, pretty
- 2:41much, yeah. And the TV, I mean, they love the
- 2:43drama of it. They love the shots of it. You couldn't
- 2:46even see the numbers. Exactly. They were like,
- 2:48we don't know where the ball is on the field.
- 2:51So it's that classic game. I know we were talking
- 2:54domes. Everybody's probably going to end up at
- 2:56the dome at one point because they want to have
- 2:58the best athletes showcasing all their talents
- 3:02on an even playing field. I get that aspect,
- 3:06too, but it's always fun. about it back in the
- 3:09day playing football in the backyard and five
- 3:11feet of snow uphill both ways that's right um
- 3:14that turnover though it's one of those turnovers
- 3:17how many broncos fans yelled throw it how many
- 3:22times before he attempted to one hand shove it
- 3:26Well, I mean, he like was going to throw it and
- 3:30then he tucks it in and continues to run. And
- 3:32then he's like, oh, time to get rid of it now.
- 3:34Yeah. Like you had your chance. It took me a
- 3:36little bit of time to actually like process it.
- 3:39And I went back and I watched it a bunch of times
- 3:41because I didn't I don't I don't agree with the
- 3:45ruling that it was a backwards pass. Because
- 3:49he was trying to throw it forward. And the only
- 3:51way for that to go backwards is to be tipped
- 3:54or a force pushing it the other way. So I think
- 3:59it would have been better ruled a fumble. It
- 4:02should have been either a fumble or an incomplete
- 4:04pass. And an incomplete pass would have obviously
- 4:09favored the Broncos. But there wasn't enough
- 4:12there for me to be like, oh, yeah. got tipped
- 4:14to go back well they didn't actually look at
- 4:16it i mean they did look at it to where i think
- 4:18they had assistance on it but they didn't sit
- 4:21there and analyze it for a minute and a half
- 4:23because i saw the thing same thing looking at
- 4:25the replay because there was a lot of quick replays
- 4:27um because initially it was more of the discussion
- 4:30you know why didn't they let the play play out
- 4:32right you know and then they're like all right
- 4:34it's it's a fumble or backwards pass New England
- 4:38gets the ball at the spot. But then they're like,
- 4:40whoa, whoa, whoa. No way. Is that how they ruled
- 4:43initially? They ruled it an incomplete pass initially.
- 4:46And then they ruled it a fumble on the spot after
- 4:49they said, yep, upstairs looked at it. But then
- 4:52I also looked at the same pass. I'm like, yeah,
- 4:54he was initially pushing it forward. And I'm
- 4:56like, did alignment and never really got a good
- 4:58angle. And they just moved on to the next play.
- 5:00So, yeah, I totally understand that. And that
- 5:03was obviously the mo -mo changer of that whole
- 5:05game. My group text. I'm like, oh, that's a momentum
- 5:08changer. But the series prior or maybe to that
- 5:13fourth down play. Why are you not kicking a field
- 5:17goal with the backup quarterback in the red zone?
- 5:19Oh, yeah, taking the points. Yeah, you should
- 5:21have. I don't understand that call. You know,
- 5:24yeah, one of my Broncos fans, buddies, was saying,
- 5:28well, yeah, what if you get that first down and
- 5:30then you go up 14 -0? And I'm like, well, that's
- 5:32not a lot of AFC. Even if you get that first
- 5:33down, it doesn't even guarantee that you're getting
- 5:36it in the end zone either, too. So I just thought
- 5:39that was a kind of mistake. And when points came
- 5:42to a premium, you know, They would have been
- 5:45up 10 -0, and you would have had to make Patriots
- 5:48drive the field, which they struggled at doing
- 5:51all day because their defense was playing good
- 5:53enough. So, I mean, it could have went either
- 5:56way. And then the weather rolled in. Then the
- 6:00weather rolled in, and it became kind of an old
- 6:03-school football play. Yeah, at that point, it
- 6:07became which team has a better running game,
- 6:10and clearly it was... It was the Patriots. Yes,
- 6:14for sure. And it was enough to continue to get
- 6:17first downs, milk clock, and then change field
- 6:20position. And then they also had the advantage
- 6:23of Drake May having, I guess, to run the ball,
- 6:27too. So when they did throw the pass and it was
- 6:30in there, where Stidham didn't really want any
- 6:33of that. Right. And that was, to your point,
- 6:37that was the clinching first down was that. The
- 6:41boot? Yeah, that bootleg, right? That nobody
- 6:43knew was coming? Yeah, they're just like, oh,
- 6:45they're going to hand it off. And then, yeah,
- 6:47just like bootleg, like, oh, and just there it
- 6:49is. Did you hear the mic of that, the video of
- 6:52him? No, I didn't catch that. Yeah, there's a
- 6:54video of him. It's just a bunch of grunting,
- 6:56you know. And then he gets around the corner,
- 6:58and he's like, that's how we do it. But congratulations,
- 7:02Drake May out of North Carolina, who I really
- 7:04wanted to be in my purple. Like they were talking
- 7:09a little bit earlier on the radio today, the
- 7:11Vikings did put a generous offer to the Patriots
- 7:14for that third pick. And Patriots obviously thought
- 7:18it was not enough or Drake was their guy. So
- 7:22congratulations to the Patriots. Any other big
- 7:27thoughts on this? Broncos are going to be a tough
- 7:32out next year, even with their number one schedule,
- 7:36because they're going to have a truckload of
- 7:39salary cap available to them this time around
- 7:41to spend, because all of that Russell Wilson
- 7:43money is finally done and over. That is huge.
- 7:45Yeah. And as if you were a Broncos fan, like
- 7:48your defense is set. Yeah. Offense, a couple
- 7:51more weapons. Harvey's kind of came on. You can
- 7:55trust him possibly. So you probably don't need
- 7:58to go running back if you need to. But I'd still
- 8:00take it. stab at one yeah um maybe sear cure
- 8:03up that offensive line a little bit you know
- 8:05that's kind of only really what denver needs
- 8:07yeah and they can spend some money too yeah they've
- 8:11got all of the dollars yeah with bo nick still
- 8:13being on his rookie contract so spend it spend
- 8:16it so broncos you're not done but a good solid
- 8:20year out of you and uh let's move over to The
- 8:25horse race of the two. Yes. The NFC Championship
- 8:30game played in Lumen Field in Seattle, home of
- 8:35the 12th man. High scoring back and forth shootouts.
- 8:41What's your kind of takes here, Jacob? My takes.
- 8:47Both teams played. For the most part, a really
- 8:50clean game. Each team made a mistake, and it
- 8:53cost them a touchdown. And so a trade -off. A
- 8:57little 6 -7. Yeah. There you go. Because the
- 9:02Rams had that muffed punt, they got recovered
- 9:04by Seattle. And then two plays later, they score.
- 9:07And then the Rams turn around, and they get that
- 9:10free first down on a fourth. Yeah, on a fourth
- 9:13down, of all things, you get a free first down
- 9:16on that taunting. And then turn that around into
- 9:19seven right out of the gates. Yeah, then they
- 9:21threw at him the very next play. Just like, oh,
- 9:24insult to injury right there. And what a great
- 9:26catch. So amazing. And the Puka and JSN both
- 9:31just lit it up. Like two of the top. top wide
- 9:35receivers in the league right now i mean there's
- 9:38still justin jefferson and there's chase but
- 9:41like puka and jsn are right there and just amazing
- 9:44to just watch them work yeah it was a showcase
- 9:46and and they got uh jsn involved early and which
- 9:51you saw that he got real like when you get a
- 9:54star involved early and it just you just feel
- 9:57like he steps up his game a little bit more and
- 10:00oh man that guy is elite you know they were really
- 10:03creative with them too they were putting it in
- 10:04the backfield and getting backers on them and
- 10:06then getting them out. So just super creative
- 10:10play calling from Clint Kubiak to just be able
- 10:15to get them open. Yeah. And for Seattle, you
- 10:18know, I mean, even both defenses, you know, the
- 10:21high 20s is a decently high scoring game. It's
- 10:27lower than, I think, well, definitely the last
- 10:29game because they went to overtime. Both defense
- 10:32played pretty well, but also both offenses, when
- 10:35they had an opportunity, took advantage of it.
- 10:39And pretty balanced offense on both sides. Defense,
- 10:43you know, just that critical stand at the end
- 10:45that Seattle made, made Rams punt. And that was
- 10:48kind of the difference. And then Seattle got
- 10:50a couple of first downs, and it was kind of game
- 10:52over. Because everyone, it was like three and
- 10:54a half, four minutes left. You're like, all right,
- 10:56Rams are going to get one more time. Nope, they
- 10:58didn't. And congratulations to Seattle. sam um
- 11:02you know him playing here last year getting to
- 11:06know him um you think other vikings fans are
- 11:09excited or happy for sam bradford or are they
- 11:12upset that we couldn't or that they couldn't
- 11:16swing a deal so there's multiple i thought about
- 11:19this actually pretty heavy today um so i kind
- 11:22of look at it is would this year's sam darno
- 11:27with seattle beat last year's sam darno to the
- 11:30vikings and my answer is easily yes i think seattle's
- 11:34a better defense overall offensively um pretty
- 11:38equal i think they have a better running game
- 11:39which probably washes out the receivers a little
- 11:41bit more um offensive line i think they're like
- 11:46especially this year if we're looking at injuries
- 11:48and stuff like their offense line so that's the
- 11:51tough part so even if we have sam again next
- 11:55year then we don't also have Jason Allen. We
- 11:59don't have Hargrave. We don't have Fries or Kelly,
- 12:04who ended up not being effective at all this
- 12:06year. But going into the season, we're like,
- 12:08oh, we locked up our center, our right guard.
- 12:10We ended up getting our left guard that we wanted.
- 12:13We're like, we got Darryl. We're solid. I think
- 12:17Sam would have struggled a little bit. I think
- 12:21he would have regressed from last year. to be
- 12:23honest. So that's where I kind of look at. So
- 12:26we would be in a financial scenario. So it just
- 12:29wasn't there. I know they put a competitive bid
- 12:31at him for one more year. Seattle gave him extra
- 12:33years is why he ended up picking that direction.
- 12:36So I don't know. I'm good for him. We had a Porsche
- 12:39in the garage that we had to drive. And it is
- 12:42what it is. I mean, Vikings fans every year is
- 12:45like, you know, for years we've been getting
- 12:47veteran quarter quarterbacks and we're like,
- 12:49we need to draft a rookie and let them grow.
- 12:51We'll fight through the. growing pains we get
- 12:54it and like day one everyone's like jumping ship
- 12:56so i don't know you can't win you can't lose
- 13:00so i don't know i'm just happy for sam and him
- 13:04you know being a good dude and making the super
- 13:06bowl so um yeah i'm kind of leaning sam's direction
- 13:10i don't in my heart for them to win so yeah he
- 13:13had a pretty rough journey i mean getting drafted
- 13:15by the jets first and then getting shipped out
- 13:18to north earth north carolina yeah it's north
- 13:20carolina play for the panthers Which he did okay,
- 13:23and then he had that nice respite in San Francisco.
- 13:28Yeah. I think it did him wonders. It did. I think,
- 13:31like you said, he learned off Purdy and how he
- 13:34preps and stuff like that. He was just a little
- 13:37aged. He was seeing ghosts, and now he's not
- 13:42seeing ghosts. He's seeing, you know. tarmac
- 13:46to the airplane to the Super Bowl is what he's
- 13:48seeing now so congratulations both teams are
- 13:52in a spot through completely different styles
- 13:54you know New England kind of grit and defense
- 13:56and Seattle through offense and firepower they
- 13:59do have the defense too but they didn't have
- 14:02to rely on them as much as New England did so
- 14:06awesome game it should be fun moving forward
- 14:09any last thoughts or anything on these two games
- 14:14Maybe you feel this, too. I mean, we're happy
- 14:17for Darnold. We should be happy for Diggs, too,
- 14:21finally making one. I mean, maybe, maybe not.
- 14:25I don't like him. I think he's a good football
- 14:27player. I don't think he's a good human. That's
- 14:30fair. That's fair. Okay. So I'm not congratulating
- 14:34him. Okay. And New England's won too much, too.
- 14:40I don't know. I'm just kind of giving away who
- 14:41I'm picking for the Super Bowl. But it's such
- 14:43a different team. It is totally complete. And
- 14:46also the Vrabel scenario adds a little twist
- 14:49to it because I think that's kind of a cool story
- 14:52of him being a former player and having the opportunity
- 14:54to coach his former team in a Super Bowl on a
- 14:58legendary franchise. All right. Well, that wraps
- 15:04up the AFC NFC Championship. We will get another
- 15:09episode of some news coming up, and then we also
- 15:11have a little Super Bowl preview, obviously,
- 15:15and we'll give you some updates where we're at
- 15:18with that. Are we allowed to say those words
- 15:20together? Yeah, who cares? Maybe. I don't know.
- 15:24Come knock on our door. We'll change it up. Yeah,
- 15:26we might get censored. If someone in the NFL
- 15:28is listening to us, we got to that point, we'll
- 15:32take the letter that we will no longer say the
- 15:35soup. Having the soup in your bowl? Yeah. Either
- 15:40way, find us on all the socials. Where at, Jake?
- 15:43I think it's on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube,
- 15:48Facebook, and anywhere else you listen to us.
- 15:52and any of your other favorite podcasts. He's
- 15:55got it down. First try. All right. Until next
- 15:58time. Bye. Peace. Don't forget to follow, like,
- 16:03and subscribe. Tune in next time for more banter
- 16:08with the boys.
