- 0:03Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to the Overland Journal podcast. I'm your host,
- 0:06Speaker 1: Scott Brady. My co host Matt. Scott is not with
- 0:08Speaker 1: me today because he is at the Rebel Rally and
- 0:11Speaker 1: that is an amazing event. You should all check it
- 0:13Speaker 1: out if you have not had a chance to take
- 0:15Speaker 1: a look. It is a multi day In fact, it's
- 0:17Speaker 1: the longest skills race of its kind in North America.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Very cool event. Check it out the Rebel Rally.
- 0:23Speaker 1: But I do have one of our senior editors here
- 0:25Speaker 1: with me today, another Matt, so it makes it very
- 0:28Speaker 1: easy on me. I've decided that I'm only going to
- 0:29Speaker 1: hire people that are named Chris or Matt, and so
- 0:32Speaker 1: far that's worked out really well for me. So I
- 0:34Speaker 1: remember anybody's name, so I can just say Matt Chris
- 0:37Speaker 1: and then somebody respond.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:40Speaker 1: So I've got Matt Sports with me today, and Matt
- 0:43Speaker 1: is our senior editor for the Expedition Portal and The
- 0:46Speaker 1: Overland Journal. Matt has a long history of spending time
- 0:50Speaker 1: in remote areas. He does paragliding, all kinds of human
- 0:54Speaker 1: powered adventures as well lived for multiple years in an
- 0:58Speaker 1: RV remote areas of the country. He currently drives twenty
- 1:01Speaker 1: five hundred ram with an airstream behind it, and Matt
- 1:03Speaker 1: has been fortunate to go on a bunch of different
- 1:05Speaker 1: vehicle launches recently, so we're going to spend some time
- 1:08Speaker 1: today talking about the vehicle launches that Matt has been
- 1:11Speaker 1: on and the vehicle launches I have been on. There's
- 1:14Speaker 1: some very interesting vehicles that are coming to the market
- 1:16Speaker 1: that we want to talk about and let you guys know.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Thanks to this week's sponsor, Gcioutdoor, whether you're heading out

- 2:03Speaker 1: So we're going to start off with the new Tundra. Cool, Yeah,
- 2:06Speaker 1: because that is an important one for our audience because
- 2:10Speaker 1: it is one of the most popular brands within the
- 2:12Speaker 1: overland segment, being Toyota. And then the Tundra continues to
- 2:15Speaker 1: gain in popularity as we see full sized trucks in
- 2:18Speaker 1: general increase in popularity. And in fact, that's part of
- 2:22Speaker 1: your motivation. What motivated you to go full size. I've
- 2:25Speaker 1: wanted a truck for a long time and my partner,
- 2:27Speaker 1: a Mandate, did too. Just the utility that you get
- 2:29Speaker 1: out of them is so cool for adventuring, and like
- 2:32Speaker 1: you mentioned, you know, we have a lot of human
- 2:34Speaker 1: powered endeavors. Hiking, paragliding is the big one right now.
- 2:37Speaker 1: You really need a truck to haul a gear and
- 2:40Speaker 1: get to the places where you do these things. So
- 2:42Speaker 1: previously we drove a Prius also, so it was pretty
- 2:45Speaker 1: limited for you know, anything off the highway. So yeah,
- 2:48Speaker 1: we knew we wanted a truck, but we had actually
- 2:50Speaker 1: been looking at Tota truck smaller you.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Know, Tacoma as at remember you mentioning that, Yeah, and
- 2:55Speaker 2: you know, I love that platform. It's super fun and
- 2:57Speaker 2: driven them. Anyone that's driven Tacoma generally has a good experience,
- 3:00Speaker 2: except when it comes to towing or payload. They're limited there,
- 3:04Speaker 2: which I wouldn't say it's a negative of the platform,
- 3:07Speaker 2: it's just a reality of that mid sized truck. And
- 3:09Speaker 2: so when we started thinking about being on the road again,
- 3:12Speaker 2: because we had been living in Denver, we were kind
- 3:15Speaker 2: of getting itchy feet and we weren't sure exactly what
- 3:17Speaker 2: our plans were. And then we've gotten an airstream. We
- 3:20Speaker 2: fell in love with it. We said, this is what
- 3:22Speaker 2: we want to do. Now. We need to find a
- 3:24Speaker 2: truck that can get us where we want to get to,
- 3:26Speaker 2: but can also pull an eight thousand pound trailer. So
- 3:29Speaker 2: that's where the full sized truck platform came in.
- 3:32Speaker 1: And they have so much flexibility as you talked about,
- 3:34Speaker 1: and we're seeing them growing rapidly within the community. People
- 3:38Speaker 1: are finding the limits of the mid sized trucks and
- 3:41Speaker 1: they're finding the limits of these smaller SUVs. And to
- 3:45Speaker 1: be able to get the kind of either equipment that
- 3:47Speaker 1: you want to bring along or a level of camping
- 3:49Speaker 1: comfort that may maybe is important to you, that's when
- 3:52Speaker 1: the full size start to really make a difference, and
- 3:54Speaker 1: the Tundra has been very popular. But again they tend
- 3:58Speaker 1: to be overbuilt by the owners, so they tend to
- 4:00Speaker 1: get too heavy, and that's why we're seeing more and
- 4:03Speaker 1: more of the three quarter ton and the one ton
- 4:05Speaker 1: domestic products being used for that. The new Tundra, the
- 4:09Speaker 1: twenty twenty two Tundra, it starts to address a few
- 4:12Speaker 1: of those concerns. So it was great to see the vehicle.
- 4:15Speaker 1: About a month ago I went near their facility in Plano, Texas.
- 4:19Speaker 1: I was able to see the vehicle in person, make
- 4:21Speaker 1: a bunch of notes. We did a pretty extensive article
- 4:24Speaker 1: on that for Expedition Portal. But then just last week
- 4:27Speaker 1: I was able to go and drive the truck and
- 4:30Speaker 1: I came away with a lot of praise for the vehicle.
- 4:33Speaker 1: A few things that are just of note. They're not
- 4:35Speaker 1: necessarily criticisms, but they're definitely items to note for someone
- 4:39Speaker 1: who's looking to purchase one. But the first thing is
- 4:42Speaker 1: they have really improved the capability of the truck. Previously,
- 4:45Speaker 1: when you got a Tundra, you got this great five
- 4:48Speaker 1: to seven V eight super powerful, also very reliable.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Was used in the land Cruiser globally.
- 4:54Speaker 1: It just provided a great platform for a kind of
- 4:57Speaker 1: a general runabout full sized truck. But it never had
- 5:00Speaker 1: a rear locking differential, so you relied entirely on traction
- 5:03Speaker 1: control to navigate technical terrain. And the traction control was
- 5:07Speaker 1: never that good. So that was the big difficulty is
- 5:09Speaker 1: you had a V eight with a lot of torque
- 5:12Speaker 1: and power, you had fairly poor performing rottle modulation from
- 5:16Speaker 1: the vehicle. So we talk about it in technical terms
- 5:19Speaker 1: as tip in when you first apply gas to the
- 5:21Speaker 1: accelerator the Tundra. Because of the V eight and because
- 5:24Speaker 1: of the way that they tuned the throttle, it would
- 5:26Speaker 1: put a bunch of power down initially, which when you
- 5:28Speaker 1: go for a test drive, it feels great. You feel
- 5:30Speaker 1: like you're buying this really powerful vehicle. And that's why
- 5:32Speaker 1: manufacturers do that. They do that for a reason, to
- 5:35Speaker 1: give this sense of power and authority in the vehicles
- 5:38Speaker 1: for a very positive test drive make for a very
- 5:40Speaker 1: positive initial ownership. But on the trail it's a lot
- 5:43Speaker 1: more difficult to manage and to modulate well.
- 5:45Speaker 2: And it makes sense because I mean, you may have
- 5:48Speaker 2: a better idea of the statistic, but I've heard that
- 5:51Speaker 2: something like, it's like seventy five percent of truck owners
- 5:54Speaker 2: won't even ever take them on the dirt. Yeah, might
- 5:57Speaker 2: not even use the bed. So I mean they're really
- 5:59Speaker 2: designing that the majority, you know, and for those majority
- 6:02Speaker 2: of people, that's not going to be a bad thing.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Like you said, it's your first experience behind the wheel
- 6:07Speaker 2: and you've got power, and you're like, oh, this.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Is great totally, and it's and the five seven sounds
- 6:12Speaker 1: great and all those other things. And then they release
- 6:14Speaker 1: the TRD Pro model, which, interestingly enough, I was actually
- 6:17Speaker 1: able to drive that up to the to Prude Obey
- 6:20Speaker 1: and above the Arctic Circle, so I was able to
- 6:22Speaker 1: experience that vehicle in pretty wide range of conditions. But
- 6:25Speaker 1: the nice thing about the new truck is that it
- 6:28Speaker 1: does have a lot of power. In fact, has more
- 6:29Speaker 1: power than the V eight.
- 6:30Speaker 2: It's a twin turbo noutwright it.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Is, so if you buy an SR five, you get
- 6:35Speaker 1: a twin turbo V six and it makes good power,
- 6:39Speaker 1: makes very similar numbers to the outgoing V eight, Or
- 6:42Speaker 1: you can get a hybrid model, which is the I
- 6:44Speaker 1: Force Max and that has four hundred and thirty plus
- 6:48Speaker 1: horse power. It has five hundred and eighty plus foot
- 6:50Speaker 1: pounds of torque. It is a very powerful vehicle to drive.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Impressive in that regard for sure. How they've addressed that
- 6:58Speaker 1: those problems with traction and the traction can is you
- 7:00Speaker 1: can now get a rear locking differential. So that's that's
- 7:03Speaker 1: the first huge win with this new twenty twenty two Tundra.
- 7:06Speaker 1: You can get a driver selectable relocking differential. Is that
- 7:09Speaker 1: standard equipment or is that an option? It's an option package.
- 7:12Speaker 1: So if you were to buy an SR five, which
- 7:15Speaker 1: as we kind of go through this, we'll talk about
- 7:17Speaker 1: the vehicles that would how we would prep them ourselves.
- 7:20Speaker 1: But I would personally not do the TRD PRO because
- 7:23Speaker 1: I would want to maximize payload. So I would go
- 7:25Speaker 1: with an SR five model and then just put on
- 7:28Speaker 1: the option package of the TRD and the TRD gives
- 7:31Speaker 1: you that rear locking differential, which is super important now
- 7:35Speaker 1: on if you have a multi terrain select which you
- 7:37Speaker 1: can get with the TRD package or with a TRD PRO,
- 7:40Speaker 1: you can put it into rock mode. And then Toyota
- 7:42Speaker 1: has done this very clever thing where they have remapped
- 7:45Speaker 1: the throttle in rock crawling.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Oh wow, So it.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Gives this very soft tip in which makes a huge
- 7:52Speaker 1: difference in controllability. So we now have the most capable
- 7:55Speaker 1: Tundra ever produced from Toyota, and that's by a wide margin.
- 7:59Speaker 1: So you've got a locking differential which settles everything down,
- 8:03Speaker 1: you have great throttle modulation, you have really impressive approach
- 8:06Speaker 1: departure breakover angles compared to the outgoing model, as well
- 8:09Speaker 1: plenty of ground clearance. The TRD pro includes an over
- 8:13Speaker 1: an inch of lyft from the factory in the front,
- 8:16Speaker 1: so it's more of kind of a leveling if you
- 8:18Speaker 1: think of it that way, so better ground clearance as well,
- 8:20Speaker 1: some Falcon all terrain tires on there. This vehicle's a
- 8:23Speaker 1: big improvement with regards to that. The other big news
- 8:26Speaker 1: with twenty twenty two Tundra is that it's built on
- 8:29Speaker 1: what they call their F one chassis, which I think.
- 8:31Speaker 2: That's kind of a fun thing. I mean F one, right, but.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Who doesn't want an F one chassis exactly exactly, So
- 8:36Speaker 1: we have this F one chassis is what they call it,
- 8:39Speaker 1: which is the same chassis that they use for the
- 8:41Speaker 1: three hundred series land Cruiser.
- 8:43Speaker 2: So does this come back to where you were calling
- 8:46Speaker 2: the new Tundra the new land Cruiser.
- 8:49Speaker 1: It is because we're not going to get the three
- 8:51Speaker 1: hundred series land Cruiser, at least not initially, and most
- 8:54Speaker 1: likely we're going to only see it as a Lexus variant,
- 8:57Speaker 1: which it isn't the end of the world. At least
- 8:59Speaker 1: we can get a verse of a land cruiser here.
- 9:01Speaker 1: It's pretty amazing that Toyota recognizes the advantage of starting
- 9:06Speaker 1: to pair this world class global platform of the land
- 9:09Speaker 1: Cruiser with some of the models that we get here
- 9:11Speaker 1: in North America. So that's a huge wind for the consumer.
- 9:14Speaker 1: This frame is incredibly impressive. I actually went to the
- 9:18Speaker 1: factory where they make the frame and it is ten
- 9:21Speaker 1: percent lighter and twenty percent stronger than the outgoing frame.
- 9:24Speaker 2: That seems to be kind of a trend. I've seen
- 9:26Speaker 2: that with a bunch of the new vehicles, like some
- 9:28Speaker 2: of the other ones we're going to talk about the
- 9:30Speaker 2: zer Rex. It's like it's lighter, but it's stronger.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Yeah, And how Toyota does that is they strategically place
- 9:36Speaker 1: these thicker pieces of metal on the frame and it's
- 9:40Speaker 1: all robotic welded. In fact, the blanks for the frame
- 9:43Speaker 1: come in on robotic forklift and then it goes through
- 9:46Speaker 1: the entire process without a human being touching it. It
- 9:50Speaker 1: is extremely sophisticated. Every single frame is one hundred percent
- 9:53Speaker 1: tested for the depth of the weld, the quality of
- 9:56Speaker 1: the weld, all of these very very tight tolerances. So
- 9:59Speaker 1: you end up with a land Cruiser frame underneath a
- 10:01Speaker 1: Toyota Tundra, which that and of itself is notable, but
- 10:04Speaker 1: with that you gain a five link rear suspension. So
- 10:07Speaker 1: it's the first of the Toyotas to have a five
- 10:09Speaker 1: link and I suspect that we're going to see that
- 10:12Speaker 1: extend on to the Tacoma as well. It's going to
- 10:14Speaker 1: only make sense. They're learning all of this great information
- 10:17Speaker 1: about how to do that.
- 10:18Speaker 2: So for someone like me who is adventuring is like,
- 10:21Speaker 2: I've grown up adventuring, but vehicles are a new component
- 10:25Speaker 2: of adventuring to me. Sure, so tell me a little
- 10:27Speaker 2: bit about five link suspension as someone who doesn't know
- 10:30Speaker 2: some of these more technical details. Because by doing that,
- 10:33Speaker 2: they got rid of the leaf spring suspension in that truck, right,
- 10:36Speaker 2: and that's kind of a big deal. It's the first
- 10:37Speaker 2: time they've done that on that platform.
- 10:39Speaker 1: It is, and they each have their advantages so a
- 10:42Speaker 1: leaf sprung suspension has an ability to manage a much
- 10:46Speaker 1: wider range of weight. It can be a little bit
- 10:49Speaker 1: better ride quality when unloaded, and then it can be
- 10:52Speaker 1: very heavily loaded without a whole bunch of squad in
- 10:54Speaker 1: the rear, which is why most three quarter ton and
- 10:57Speaker 1: one ton trucks still have leaf springs in the rear.
- 11:00Speaker 1: They're also very simple and they're less expensive to produce.
- 11:03Speaker 1: The advantage of the five link is that you can
- 11:07Speaker 1: typically gain articulation. From that, you gain ride quality, and
- 11:11Speaker 1: the most important thing is you gain a huge step
- 11:14Speaker 1: up in handling and ride quality. So the handling improves
- 11:18Speaker 1: because you now have these five links that are isolating
- 11:21Speaker 1: the rear axle in exactly the path of travel that
- 11:24Speaker 1: the designer wants it to work. So you don't get
- 11:25Speaker 1: a lot of flex from the springs when you're coming around,
- 11:30Speaker 1: like let's say a higher speed corner, you don't get
- 11:32Speaker 1: all that deflection of the leaf pack. It all is
- 11:34Speaker 1: very much stays planted, and it gives a lot better
- 11:37Speaker 1: control over that. You also don't get any axle hop.
- 11:39Speaker 1: So one of the things that we don't like about
- 11:41Speaker 1: leaf sprung vehicles is that when you're on a corrugated
- 11:44Speaker 1: road or you go to take off, they really can
- 11:47Speaker 1: you get that chatter exactly and that goes away. Other
- 11:51Speaker 1: than if there's already corrugations on the road, you'll feel
- 11:54Speaker 1: those cycling. It doesn't impart additional chatter from the suspension.
- 11:58Speaker 1: So that's why most SUVs how a solid rear axle
- 12:01Speaker 1: are a five link rear because they're very isolating, they're
- 12:04Speaker 1: very controllable, they're very consistent, they're very confidence inspiring to
- 12:08Speaker 1: the driver. But then again, the downside is managing the weight,
- 12:11Speaker 1: and Toyota does that on the Tundra. They handle that
- 12:14Speaker 1: on some of the models by including airbag suspension. So
- 12:17Speaker 1: once you have a five link with airbags, now you've
- 12:19Speaker 1: solved all of that variability in the payloads. So if
- 12:22Speaker 1: it's a lightly loaded truck rides great. If it's a
- 12:24Speaker 1: heavily loaded truck, it rides great. So TRD pro doesn't
- 12:27Speaker 1: come that way. The TRD anything with the locker, you
- 12:31Speaker 1: can't get the airbag suspension, which some people will see
- 12:33Speaker 1: that as an advantage because it's less complex. I actually
- 12:36Speaker 1: am a huge fan of Toyota air suspensions. I had
- 12:38Speaker 1: one on my Lexus and very reliable. Toyota's got that
- 12:42Speaker 1: all figured out. It's not the air suspensions of old
- 12:44Speaker 1: where you're always worried about them failing. They're much better now.
- 12:47Speaker 1: But yeah, that five link is a real upside. Now
- 12:50Speaker 1: here's the interesting thing, and it's worth noting on the
- 12:52Speaker 1: Tundra the airbag suspension system is not available on the
- 12:56Speaker 1: TRD or the tird Pro. The oil sprung version actually
- 13:00Speaker 1: has a little bit less articulation than the leaf sprung version.
- 13:03Speaker 1: So people will oftentimes think like leaf springs are going
- 13:06Speaker 1: to have less articulation.
- 13:07Speaker 2: That's not always the case.
- 13:08Speaker 1: It's just important for people to know when they buy
- 13:11Speaker 1: this new Tundra that it actually has a little bit
- 13:13Speaker 1: less flex And the reason for that is that the
- 13:15Speaker 1: shocks are outboard of the frame and because of the packaging,
- 13:18Speaker 1: they can only be so long, so the articulation is
- 13:20Speaker 1: only limited by the shock length. So that's really easy
- 13:23Speaker 1: to fix with the aftermarket. So you shouldn't you shouldn
- 13:26Speaker 1: not buy it because it has a little bit less
- 13:28Speaker 1: flex than the other version. But it's important to note
- 13:30Speaker 1: that the aftermarket will respond with longer shock packaging and
- 13:34Speaker 1: some adjustments to the mounting configuration. To allow for I
- 13:37Speaker 1: suspect a ton of flex out of the back of
- 13:39Speaker 1: these Tundras. We were just talking about that the other day.
- 13:41Speaker 2: I was asking you about articulation with lift insulation and
- 13:45Speaker 2: do you get more and you said, not automatically. Yeah,
- 13:47Speaker 2: So it depends on the vehicle, depends on the lift
- 13:49Speaker 2: that you're putting on it, exactly.
- 13:51Speaker 1: So overall, the new Tundra, it's an impressive vehicle. It's
- 13:55Speaker 1: a huge step up from the outgoing model. I think
- 13:57Speaker 1: that it's going to be extremely popular. Their anticipation being
- 14:00Speaker 1: a quarter million units a year. This facility that I
- 14:02Speaker 1: saw in San Antonio was massive. I mean, they are
- 14:05Speaker 1: ready to make a lot of trucks, and there's a
- 14:07Speaker 1: lot that I like about it. In fact, on the
- 14:09Speaker 1: tird Pro, the only thing that there's two things I
- 14:11Speaker 1: didn't care for. Payload's only sixteen hundred pounds, which again
- 14:14Speaker 1: is an improvement over the outgoing model. And then it
- 14:16Speaker 1: has this super red interior. I saw this photos. Yeah,
- 14:20Speaker 1: it's like and I get it, like it's it's supposed
- 14:23Speaker 1: to be the sporty, fun model and probably I'm not
- 14:26Speaker 1: the right buyer for that interior, but I think some
- 14:28Speaker 1: people will love it. But for me, they make a
- 14:29Speaker 1: seventeen ninety four model, which is named after the ranch
- 14:33Speaker 1: that the factory is built on.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Got it, so that.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Ranch was opened in seventeen ninety four, and that interior
- 14:39Speaker 1: is beautiful. It's super overlandy with like like wood and
- 14:42Speaker 1: nice camel colored leather and stuff like that, so it's
- 14:44Speaker 1: really it's really a little bit of a vintage feel. Yeah,
- 14:47Speaker 1: it's super handsome interior. And you can get the seventeen
- 14:50Speaker 1: ninety four with the TRD package, so you can kind
- 14:53Speaker 1: of get what you want, which is nice. You can
- 14:54Speaker 1: make make that selection. So overall, a big thumbs up
- 14:57Speaker 1: for me on the Tundra. I think it's a great
- 14:59Speaker 1: new option and for people to consider. Payload is up,
- 15:02Speaker 1: so you can get an SR five with a TRD
- 15:04Speaker 1: package and you can get up into the high eighteen
- 15:06Speaker 1: hundred pound range on payload, which is a big improvement
- 15:09Speaker 1: over the outgoing model.
- 15:10Speaker 2: So yeah, Thunder is a nice one. Nice. So yeah, well,
- 15:13Speaker 2: I hope I get to drive one at some point.
- 15:14Speaker 1: It sounds well, I think we'll get one here for
- 15:16Speaker 1: some longer term testing, which I think will be will
- 15:18Speaker 1: be good. But you drove the kind of the opposite
- 15:21Speaker 1: of that. You drove the TRX super truck, and what
- 15:23Speaker 1: did you think of that.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Yeah, well, it's the first super truck I've ever driven.
- 15:28Speaker 2: You know, I haven't driven too many trucks period, So yeah,
- 15:31Speaker 2: it's it's a pretty wild vehicle. You know. It has
- 15:34Speaker 2: that hellcat engine at yeah six point four I think, yeah,
- 15:37Speaker 2: six point four, six point four okay, Yeah, so it's big.
- 15:40Speaker 2: It makes seven hundred and two horse power. I don't
- 15:42Speaker 2: remember the specs on the torque, but it's a lot. No,
- 15:45Speaker 2: I think you're I think you're right. I'm picturing the
- 15:48Speaker 2: six point two. I don't know.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Yeah, oh yeah, maybe there's a there's a six four,
- 15:51Speaker 1: and then there's a there's a couple of different variants.
- 15:53Speaker 2: But yeah, monster engine, Monster engine. It sounds really nice. Yeah. Yeah,
- 15:58Speaker 2: the sound when you bury the accelerator on that is
- 16:00Speaker 2: just wild. It's a very you know, like visceral kind
- 16:03Speaker 2: of emotional feeling totally, and I'm not one for that
- 16:07Speaker 2: kind of thing. I've never owned a fast car in
- 16:10Speaker 2: my life, like I've owned a I owned a two
- 16:12Speaker 2: thousand and one super Forester. That was the first car
- 16:14Speaker 2: I ever owned. Yeah, it wasn't a turbo. It was slow,
- 16:17Speaker 2: you know, and then we had a Prius and now
- 16:19Speaker 2: we have a truck and but yeah, so the t
- 16:21Speaker 2: Rex super cool vehicle. We got to drive it in
- 16:25Speaker 2: the cinders up by flag Staff, which that's a nice
- 16:28Speaker 2: spot for that. Oh yeah, I mean it's if you
- 16:30Speaker 2: could come up with the perfect place to demonstrate the
- 16:32Speaker 2: capability of that truck, that's it. You know, maybe that
- 16:35Speaker 2: or baha, I don't know, you know, driving on some sand,
- 16:37Speaker 2: but the truck has the incredible power. But that truck
- 16:40Speaker 2: also has a really great suspension from Bill Stein, an
- 16:43Speaker 2: active suspension, which is cool. So it's actually adjusting in
- 16:46Speaker 2: real time to the train, which is when you're behind
- 16:50Speaker 2: the wheel of it. It's it's just such a comfortable
- 16:52Speaker 2: experience on such a variety. You know, we drove on
- 16:56Speaker 2: some straightaways fast which they look flat, but they're actually
- 16:59Speaker 2: bumpy sure, and just the truck's ability to make up
- 17:03Speaker 2: for those bumps is incredible. It's surprising at speed that
- 17:05Speaker 2: it could handle terrain like that so well.
- 17:07Speaker 1: And it has the five link in the rear on
- 17:09Speaker 1: that too, so again very controllable.
- 17:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:12Speaker 1: And one of the things that I think is interesting
- 17:14Speaker 1: about a lot of these new vehicles with the increased
- 17:16Speaker 1: capability is it gives the driver so much confidence. So
- 17:19Speaker 1: you were driving that truck likely faster than you would
- 17:22Speaker 1: ever consider driving a vehicle on that terrain.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Oh yeah, and yeah, I would never do have my
- 17:27Speaker 2: personal truck like that, you know, but I was encouraged
- 17:30Speaker 2: to drive it like that kind of that, like drive
- 17:32Speaker 2: it like you stole it.
- 17:34Speaker 1: But how fun is that to just like have someone say,
- 17:37Speaker 1: we really believe in this truck. Why don't you see
- 17:39Speaker 1: what it can do?
- 17:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's a blast. We started off our
- 17:42Speaker 2: test by using the launch control feature, which is really cool.
- 17:46Speaker 2: You know. It lets you set a predetermined rpm range
- 17:49Speaker 2: that the engine will hold at even when you're flooring
- 17:51Speaker 2: the accelerator. So you basically hit the launch button, you
- 17:54Speaker 2: stand on the brake, you get on the display. It
- 17:57Speaker 2: actually shows you the PSI that you're generating with the brakes.
- 18:00Speaker 2: You hold the brakes, you jan the accelerator to the floor,
- 18:02Speaker 2: you know, you watch the tachometer go up and it
- 18:04Speaker 2: holds that you're predetermined rpm range, and then you let
- 18:07Speaker 2: off the brake and it takes off.
- 18:09Speaker 1: So I think it goes zero to sixty and just
- 18:11Speaker 1: under four seconds or somewhere around.
- 18:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I think if you read on the RAM website
- 18:15Speaker 2: they say four point five seconds. But okay, I've since
- 18:17Speaker 2: found a lot of people who have you know, third
- 18:20Speaker 2: parties who have driven it and tested it, and they've
- 18:22Speaker 2: they've gotten it under four seconds. I've heard as little
- 18:24Speaker 2: as three and a half, which I don't know if
- 18:27Speaker 2: that's accurate, but yeah, it's wild. And I mean, so
- 18:30Speaker 2: we were driving it mostly on these cinders, so this
- 18:33Speaker 2: loose material. We obviously aired down the tires significantly because
- 18:36Speaker 2: it is so loose, but it was still just wild
- 18:39Speaker 2: how well it did, how it managed to float over
- 18:42Speaker 2: that terrain. We did kind of some slow, narrow trail
- 18:46Speaker 2: sections where we got to, you know, experience the articulation
- 18:48Speaker 2: that the truck has, and it's actually very good. There
- 18:51Speaker 2: was some pretty off camber and cross actual sections and
- 18:54Speaker 2: I don't recall ever losing wheel contact. Yeah, it's long
- 18:58Speaker 2: travel for sure. Yeah, I believe you get thirteen inches
- 19:01Speaker 2: of travel on all four corners of the truck, which
- 19:04Speaker 2: is I'm not sure how that stacks up in the segment,
- 19:07Speaker 2: but I assume it's pretty good.
- 19:08Speaker 1: That's yeah, that's really good. And Matt Scott has one
- 19:12Speaker 1: as well, and he praises the vehicle. And if you
- 19:15Speaker 1: think of it from if you wanted to own one vehicle,
- 19:17Speaker 1: you kind of end up with a sports car and
- 19:19Speaker 1: you end up with the desert racing. It would be
- 19:21Speaker 1: your version of a u TV or something like that.
- 19:24Speaker 1: And then you can also take it on technical terrain
- 19:26Speaker 1: because it has locking differential and it has those capabilities differentially.
- 19:31Speaker 2: It definitely has locking differential, and yeah, it has selectable
- 19:35Speaker 2: driving modes too, you get. We drove it in Baja
- 19:37Speaker 2: mode most of the time, which I think it turns
- 19:39Speaker 2: off traction control and it you know, it really just
- 19:42Speaker 2: loosens the truck up and I means to hang it
- 19:44Speaker 2: out there. Yeah, it's so fun. We did a high
- 19:46Speaker 2: marketing exercise in this volcanic crater, which is like this
- 19:50Speaker 2: is work apparently, you know. But it was incredible, so,
- 19:55Speaker 2: you know, driving it up the steep hillside and then
- 19:57Speaker 2: this was a really interesting thing because a truck that
- 19:59Speaker 2: has this much power and these many features, you still
- 20:03Speaker 2: have to rely on your driving prowess, you know, because
- 20:06Speaker 2: you can still bury a truck like this, and oh
- 20:08Speaker 2: for sure quickly. Yeah, one of our participants did they
- 20:11Speaker 2: you know, they came up around the high part of
- 20:13Speaker 2: this exercise and then down through the loose cinders and
- 20:16Speaker 2: they didn't quite carry enough power and they bogged down
- 20:19Speaker 2: and then they floor did after they lost momentum, and
- 20:21Speaker 2: they just sank right down, you know, just about to
- 20:24Speaker 2: the axles. And it's no fault to the truck. So
- 20:26Speaker 2: we pulled out the max tracks, we did some digging,
- 20:29Speaker 2: we got it out no problem.
- 20:30Speaker 1: Yeah, what a fun vehicle. I mean, in my mind,
- 20:32Speaker 1: it just does so many different things. It just doesn't
- 20:34Speaker 1: have any payloads, so you basically you bring a backpack
- 20:37Speaker 1: along and go and go have some smiles. I mean,
- 20:40Speaker 1: it's just you don't really load it up. I think
- 20:41Speaker 1: it's under one thousand pounds of payloads.
- 20:43Speaker 2: So yeah, it's not much and the towing is limited
- 20:46Speaker 2: to yeah, you know, which it's not meant for that. No,
- 20:48Speaker 2: no it's not. It's I think the thing that comes
- 20:51Speaker 2: to mind with that truck is fun. It is about fun.
- 20:54Speaker 2: It feels a little bit like toy, you know, and
- 20:56Speaker 2: expensive toy, but it feels like a toy. It's fast,
- 20:59Speaker 2: it's sporty, I mean kind of like the Toyota. The
- 21:02Speaker 2: interior is a statement. You know, it's very sporty. You've
- 21:05Speaker 2: got this like swede and leather wrap steering wheel, You've
- 21:08Speaker 2: got a big, you know, touchscreen display, you've got a
- 21:10Speaker 2: loud stereo. Sure, it's just beautiful and comfortable, and it's
- 21:14Speaker 2: it's super fun. I mean, if I win the power Ball,
- 21:16Speaker 2: that's what you're getting. That's yeah, I said that a
- 21:19Speaker 2: few times now, you know, not exactly practical for my
- 21:22Speaker 2: lifestyle right now, but man if I could afford to
- 21:24Speaker 2: have a second vehicle just for fun, that would maybe
- 21:26Speaker 2: be high on my list right now.
- 21:28Speaker 1: Well, and I'm thinking just going down Baja, you bring
- 21:30Speaker 1: a tent spearfishing stuff and throw it in the bed
- 21:33Speaker 1: and just I mean it would be great on next one,
- 21:36Speaker 1: it would be great on all the back roads. Yeah,
- 21:38Speaker 1: it'd be a super fun vehicle for like you said,
- 21:40Speaker 1: you know, as long as you don't need to load
- 21:42Speaker 1: it up with payload. If you can go super light
- 21:44Speaker 1: maybe you know. Yeah, yeah, I think it'd be a
- 21:46Speaker 1: fun travel vehicle for sure. Yeah, definitely awesome. Well, let's
- 21:50Speaker 1: pivot a little bit. You also drove the SUPERU out
- 21:54Speaker 1: back wilderness, which there's there's an enormous amount of interest
- 21:57Speaker 1: in this vehicle because Subreu's they have this reputation for
- 22:01Speaker 1: reliability and durability for a car, and then they have
- 22:04Speaker 1: slowly added capability through the years with improved traction control,
- 22:08Speaker 1: additional ground clearance, better approach and departure angles. Subaru keeps
- 22:13Speaker 1: pushing the envelope of crossing the lines between basically a
- 22:16Speaker 1: car and in a high clearance crossover car. What was
- 22:20Speaker 1: your thoughts on the Wilderness.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Subaru's probably the car that I have the longest relationship with.
- 22:26Speaker 2: My first car was a Forester. My family all. I
- 22:29Speaker 2: grew up on the East coast, so in the northeast,
- 22:30Speaker 2: so everyone that doesn't have a truck generally drives a
- 22:33Speaker 2: super roof sure so that you don't get stuck in
- 22:35Speaker 2: the snow. So driving the Wilderness Edition was very reminiscent
- 22:39Speaker 2: of driving other subar Us. It was very comfortable, first
- 22:43Speaker 2: of all. I mean the one that we were in,
- 22:45Speaker 2: it's you know, it's comfortable, interior, leather, loaded, loaded up loaded,
- 22:49Speaker 2: It's got great driving features. It has selectable driving modes
- 22:52Speaker 2: that are kind of akin to the stuff we've been
- 22:54Speaker 2: talking about already, you know, like a rock and sand mode,
- 22:56Speaker 2: and car does a great job of adapting to the terrain,
- 23:00Speaker 2: so we use some of those. I got to drive
- 23:03Speaker 2: on some steep, loose and rocky terrain that is maybe
- 23:07Speaker 2: a little bit more technical than what most people would
- 23:09Speaker 2: want to take a Subaru on, and this car did fantastic.
- 23:12Speaker 2: Actually a little bit of slip here and there, but
- 23:15Speaker 2: that was I think more my fault, you know, just
- 23:18Speaker 2: because this is a different kind of driving style. It's sure,
- 23:20Speaker 2: it's not four wheel drive. It doesn't have a locker.
- 23:22Speaker 2: It's all wheel drive, you know. I didn't have big
- 23:24Speaker 2: knobby tires on. It had some at tires, but so
- 23:27Speaker 2: it took a little bit more skill to get through
- 23:30Speaker 2: some of the more technical terrain that other vehicles just
- 23:32Speaker 2: had no problem with. But it sounds like it also
- 23:34Speaker 2: did it whenever the other vehicles went it did it.
- 23:37Speaker 2: It has the Wilderness Edition. I believe they give it
- 23:39Speaker 2: a little lift they go down to I think it
- 23:42Speaker 2: was a seventeen inch wheel with a bigger tire. Nice.
- 23:44Speaker 2: They have skid plating on it. It's got the turbo engine,
- 23:48Speaker 2: so it's got a good amount of power.
- 23:49Speaker 1: Is it a CVT or is it a Does it
- 23:51Speaker 1: shift and does it have a continuously variable transmission or
- 23:54Speaker 1: does it.
- 23:55Speaker 2: Good question yours? I think it was a CVT, don't
- 24:00Speaker 2: me to that. Ill, we'll check that out. We can
- 24:02Speaker 2: look at that. But super comfortable to drive, surprisingly capable
- 24:05Speaker 2: for what it was. And then when you get on
- 24:07Speaker 2: the just the dirt that's not technical. I feel like
- 24:10Speaker 2: that's its sweet spot. I mean, you can drive it
- 24:13Speaker 2: fast and it just it sticks. It doesn't it doesn't
- 24:17Speaker 2: get loose in the corners. It feels like a rally
- 24:20Speaker 2: car kind of or what you pick, which a rally car,
- 24:22Speaker 2: which is fun and it's a rally car with a
- 24:24Speaker 2: little bit of a lift. Yeah, I mean that's kind
- 24:26Speaker 2: of their roots for off read stuff, right like, Yeah,
- 24:27Speaker 2: Suber is big in the rally world. And yeah, yeah,
- 24:30Speaker 2: great car. I mean, and it had a roof top
- 24:32Speaker 2: tent set up on it, you know, they had it interesting. Yeah,
- 24:35Speaker 2: they had it set up for having fun going out
- 24:37Speaker 2: into the back country. And on this trip, this was
- 24:40Speaker 2: prior to over Land Expo West in Flagsaff, and we
- 24:44Speaker 2: went up to the north rim of the Grand Canyon
- 24:46Speaker 2: and we had a whole handful of vehicles and I
- 24:48Speaker 2: mean some really really capable vehicles. Sure, I would say
- 24:51Speaker 2: this is probably one of the least capable in the group.
- 24:54Speaker 2: But it hung, It had no issue, It made it
- 24:57Speaker 2: did it did everything that the other trucks did. It
- 24:59Speaker 2: never got stuck. Yeah, it was great. Yeah, there's a
- 25:01Speaker 2: lot to say about a Subaru.
- 25:03Speaker 1: Something that you can drive every day, get reasonable gas
- 25:05Speaker 1: mileage out of it, and then definitely I think the
- 25:08Speaker 1: key to them is not to overmodify them. We see
- 25:11Speaker 1: a lot of them that get too heavy and then
- 25:13Speaker 1: it just starts to ruin the attributes of the vehicle,
- 25:15Speaker 1: like the gas knowledge plummets typically when you overmodify them.
- 25:18Speaker 2: Sure, I destroyed my Subaru by hauling firewood. I would
- 25:21Speaker 2: just go and cut full trees, buck them in the
- 25:24Speaker 2: six foot pieces, put them in the back, and obviously
- 25:26Speaker 2: my suspension suffered. But I think one of the other
- 25:29Speaker 2: really cool things about the Subaru, and this was something
- 25:31Speaker 2: that came up on our test drive, but you know,
- 25:33Speaker 2: it's valuable for everyone to know about is the value
- 25:36Speaker 2: you get out of this vehicle. It's under forty ky
- 25:39Speaker 2: and it's got a turbo, it's got skid plating, it's lifted.
- 25:43Speaker 2: It can do many overland adventures that you would want
- 25:45Speaker 2: to do, but it's less than forty k And yeah,
- 25:48Speaker 2: that's something you can't say about many of the vehicles
- 25:50Speaker 2: that we talk about, you know, especially when you get
- 25:52Speaker 2: into modifying them. So just to be able to yeah
- 25:55Speaker 2: that's true, to enter this overland, you know, for a
- 25:57Speaker 2: new vehicle, right sure, but you know, to have option
- 26:00Speaker 2: for like you said, something that you can daily drive
- 26:02Speaker 2: and it feels like a practical daily driver, but you
- 26:05Speaker 2: can also take on an adventure like this. That's super cool.
- 26:09Speaker 2: And that's awesome because you know, it's great to see
- 26:11Speaker 2: more vehicles coming to market that will allow people to
- 26:14Speaker 2: explore the space that we like to play in because
- 26:16Speaker 2: it's so cool. But it shouldn't feel like an exclusive space.
- 26:18Speaker 2: And you don't need this, you know, you don't need
- 26:20Speaker 2: a crazy super truck to go do that. You can
- 26:22Speaker 2: get a Subaru and there's kind of small and nimble.
- 26:25Speaker 1: And you were with us that day when we were
- 26:27Speaker 1: we took the Ranger out and we took that Wrangler
- 26:29Speaker 1: out and we had that problem with the breaks locking
- 26:31Speaker 1: up on the Ranger, so we had to just kind
- 26:33Speaker 1: of leave it there. I hopped in Aaron, my girlfriend's Subaru,
- 26:37Speaker 1: and we you know, so we're in her. It's stock
- 26:40Speaker 1: vehicle super Forrester, totally stock, and we drove all the
- 26:43Speaker 1: way in on that trail to go get the Ranger
- 26:46Speaker 1: and it was no trouble. And it wasn't even like, oh,
- 26:49Speaker 1: I'm going to drive it because it's technical terrain. I mean,
- 26:51Speaker 1: she's a good driver and there was no reason to
- 26:53Speaker 1: swap out. So I actually got out and took some
- 26:54Speaker 1: photos nice and like rutted, you know, deep roots and
- 26:59Speaker 1: deep ruts and little rocks and stuff, and the car
- 27:02Speaker 1: just literally didn't even hiccup, didn't spind a tire, the
- 27:05Speaker 1: whole thing. And it makes you realize maybe we kind
- 27:08Speaker 1: of overgame it too much when something that's simple and
- 27:11Speaker 1: lost a stock is usually the best option.
- 27:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it's just a good reminder. You know,
- 27:15Speaker 2: it's fun to have the vehicle with all the bells
- 27:17Speaker 2: and whistles, but you cann't get by with something much simpler.
- 27:20Speaker 2: And for a lot of people that's going to be
- 27:21Speaker 2: more appealing because not everyone wants to take the time
- 27:23Speaker 2: or spend the money to do what we do to
- 27:25Speaker 2: some of these vehicles.
- 27:26Speaker 1: Totally Well, that's a good example. So like with my Sierra,
- 27:30Speaker 1: I've got the camper on there, and everything else. I
- 27:32Speaker 1: just don't drive it as often as a daily driver
- 27:34Speaker 1: anymore because it's kind of set up for travel. So
- 27:36Speaker 1: now we take her car a lot of the time.
- 27:39Speaker 1: And so I'm going to get a little spring lift
- 27:41Speaker 1: for it, and I'm gonna get a little bit bigger tire.
- 27:42Speaker 1: That's all I'm gonna do. It's just a couple little
- 27:45Speaker 1: things because we take it hiking and take the bikes out,
- 27:47Speaker 1: I mean, and just to have a little bit more
- 27:49Speaker 1: capability maybe kind of along the lines of the wilderness.
- 27:51Speaker 1: And then you've got a super capable little vehicle that
- 27:54Speaker 1: can get you where you want to go.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Yeah, that's pretty fun.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Well, I'm glad you got a chance to test that
- 27:58Speaker 1: because it's a vehicle that I think think there's a
- 28:00Speaker 1: lot of interest. In fact, some of our most popular
- 28:02Speaker 1: articles have been about super us, so there's a lot
- 28:04Speaker 1: of people that want to use them for this kind
- 28:06Speaker 1: of travel. So yeah, and now for a quick break
- 28:15Speaker 1: from one of our supporters on ex off Road. If
- 28:20Speaker 1: you're driving or writing on dirt this summer, don't leave
- 28:23Speaker 1: home without the onex off Road GPS app. For less

- 29:07Speaker 2: Right now, Thanks ONYX.
- 29:11Speaker 1: We're gonna pivot it back back again the extreme opposite
- 29:14Speaker 1: direction again, from the TRX to the Hummer.
- 29:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I want to hear about this one.
- 29:18Speaker 1: A couple of weeks ago, I had the chance to
- 29:20Speaker 1: be one of the first to drive the Hummer.
- 29:22Speaker 2: Ev it is.
- 29:24Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's difficult to describe because it is so
- 29:27Speaker 1: contrary to most of our experiences driving vehicles. So it
- 29:30Speaker 1: weighs nine pounds, it's a a big vehicle. Yeah, So
- 29:34Speaker 1: it weighs more than any I mean, it weighs more
- 29:37Speaker 1: than your ram for example. It's just it's extremely heavy
- 29:40Speaker 1: because of the batteries and all of the hardware and
- 29:43Speaker 1: the size of the hardware that needs to be on
- 29:45Speaker 1: it to handle all of that power. And then it
- 29:47Speaker 1: makes one thousand horse power and it makes the electric
- 29:51Speaker 1: vehicle equivalent of eleven thousand foot pounds of torque, which
- 29:55Speaker 1: is insane?
- 29:56Speaker 2: Does that? Does that equate to torque and a gasoline engine? Like?
- 29:59Speaker 2: Is that as if you had eleven thousand foot pounds
- 30:03Speaker 2: of torque in a gasoline engine?
- 30:04Speaker 1: It's the it's their equivalent of it. So it's it's
- 30:07Speaker 1: like it's like trying to compare an internal combustion engine
- 30:11Speaker 1: fuel economy to electric fuel economy. It's like a colcusing
- 30:15Speaker 1: it's like a calculation, right that kind of takes it
- 30:18Speaker 1: into consideration.
- 30:19Speaker 2: It feels like eleven thousand pounds orlow. I mean it is.
- 30:22Speaker 1: I mean, I'll just start with with the fact that
- 30:24Speaker 1: it has this mode that's called WTF.
- 30:27Speaker 2: I remember writing about this when it came up, Yeah,
- 30:30Speaker 2: which which means watts to freedom. But of course it
- 30:33Speaker 2: actually means exactly what you think it means, because when
- 30:36Speaker 2: that thing launches zero to sixty, that's exactly what you say.
- 30:41Speaker 2: You actually you don't say anything at first, because you're
- 30:42Speaker 2: trying to capture breath and not and not slam your
- 30:45Speaker 2: head into the headrest. Going to say you're getting pinned
- 30:47Speaker 2: back into your seat. I watched your video which is
- 30:49Speaker 2: on the YouTube channel, and I mean it looks like
- 30:52Speaker 2: you're in a race car.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Yeah, it was incredible. It was incredible. I mean, and
- 30:56Speaker 1: I was I was anticipating it. I mean, I knew
- 30:58Speaker 1: it was going to launch hard. There was no way
- 31:01Speaker 1: I could hold myself in that position on the seat.
- 31:04Speaker 1: I was pinned against the head rest and yeah, zero
- 31:07Speaker 1: to sixty and three seconds.
- 31:09Speaker 2: It must have a pretty decent traction control system too, then,
- 31:12Speaker 2: to manage all of that power without just immediately losing
- 31:16Speaker 2: traction and giving you wheelspin In fact, I would.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Say that is the greatest engineering feat that they accomplished,
- 31:22Speaker 1: is managing that amount of power in the seamless way
- 31:25Speaker 1: that it does. So we always think about like land
- 31:28Speaker 1: rover or jeep when it comes to traction control and
- 31:31Speaker 1: those kinds of systems. GM has absolutely nailed it with this.
- 31:34Speaker 1: To have that kind of power and for it to
- 31:37Speaker 1: break the tires free, so it'll actually you can hear
- 31:40Speaker 1: the tires squealing, but it doesn't just light them up
- 31:43Speaker 1: and then you lose performance going forward. It's very seamless.
- 31:46Speaker 1: You don't feel it cutting the power. It just feeds
- 31:49Speaker 1: this tremendous amount of torque to these tires. Now, it
- 31:52Speaker 1: has like the equivalent of a thirty five twelve fifty
- 31:55Speaker 1: tire on there. It's a custom made tire specifically for
- 31:58Speaker 1: the Hummer to be able to handle that that kind
- 32:00Speaker 1: of power, and it'll take a thirty seven with essentially
- 32:04Speaker 1: no modification. So it's just incredible to go that fast
- 32:07Speaker 1: like a sports car, or faster than most sports cars
- 32:10Speaker 1: still be able to have a thirty seven inch tall tire.
- 32:12Speaker 1: You know, it's got the equivalent of a virtual rear
- 32:15Speaker 1: locking differential because it has two motors in the rear.
- 32:18Speaker 1: The motors work together to create the effect of a locker.
- 32:21Speaker 1: So it's two in the rear, is it one in
- 32:23Speaker 1: the front, one in the front, Okay, yeah, which is
- 32:25Speaker 1: different from like the Rivian which has four motors and
- 32:28Speaker 1: the one in the front. It feeds a differential like
- 32:31Speaker 1: we would have on a standard foal drive in the front.
- 32:33Speaker 2: And then so it's kind of like a hybrid. It is,
- 32:35Speaker 2: because a lot of hybrid they do just four wheel
- 32:40Speaker 2: to do a motor per wheel right.
- 32:41Speaker 1: Correct, Like a Tesla will do two motors that feed
- 32:45Speaker 1: to differentials. Oh, they do a differential two. Yeah, And
- 32:47Speaker 1: it depends on the It just depends on the design.
- 32:50Speaker 1: The Rivian one is quite interesting because then it has
- 32:52Speaker 1: total control over each wheel, which actually allows it to
- 32:55Speaker 1: do that tank mode, so it can it can rotate
- 32:57Speaker 1: in its within its within its wheelbase. That's all the
- 33:00Speaker 1: interesting stuff that comes with an electric vehicle. You can
- 33:03Speaker 1: just do things that internal combustion didn't allow, and you
- 33:06Speaker 1: can think outside the box. And they really did that
- 33:08Speaker 1: with the Hummer. I mean it has a front locking differential.
- 33:11Speaker 1: I found an interesting situation. We were in the rocks
- 33:14Speaker 1: and these were fairly large boulders. I mean, it would
- 33:17Speaker 1: be a challenge even for a Rubicon wrangler. And I
- 33:20Speaker 1: was going very slow because I was trying to get
- 33:22Speaker 1: a sense for how the vehicle, you know, modulated all
- 33:25Speaker 1: that kind of power. And I had the front right
- 33:28Speaker 1: up against the ledge and the rear left up against
- 33:30Speaker 1: the ledge, and I kind of stopped up against the ledge,
- 33:33Speaker 1: and I was trying to see how it would how
- 33:34Speaker 1: much tractive performance it had, and what's the interesting thing
- 33:37Speaker 1: about electric motors until they get moving a little bit,
- 33:40Speaker 1: they actually don't have They don't have that kind of power.
- 33:43Speaker 1: So it's not like it's sitting there idling or at
- 33:45Speaker 1: a low rpm like it would with an automatic transmission
- 33:48Speaker 1: or with the manual transmission. It's you know, the engines
- 33:51Speaker 1: just sitting there idling at a certain amount of rpm.
- 33:53Speaker 1: So it's already got some mass in motion. The electric
- 33:56Speaker 1: motor is not moving at all. So if you're up
- 33:58Speaker 1: against a ledge and the motor isn't moving at all,
- 34:01Speaker 1: you aren't making even a fraction of that power. So
- 34:04Speaker 1: I actually was able to stall the electric motors because
- 34:08Speaker 1: because it was trying to do brake traction control at
- 34:11Speaker 1: the same time as climbing the ledge, which was too
- 34:14Speaker 1: much for the weight of the vehicle.
- 34:15Speaker 2: Got it.
- 34:16Speaker 1: So how I solved it was I did the virtual
- 34:19Speaker 1: locking in the rear and then I did the front
- 34:21Speaker 1: locking differential. So now the brake traction controls not robbing
- 34:24Speaker 1: torque from the system. Sure, and it climbed right up
- 34:26Speaker 1: the rock, no problem, no problem. So it was really
- 34:29Speaker 1: but that was an interesting thing is that with an
- 34:31Speaker 1: electric vehicle, you don't really want to come to a stop,
- 34:35Speaker 1: Like even if it's just the wheels are barely rolling,
- 34:38Speaker 1: got it, that's going to be an ideal way to
- 34:40Speaker 1: get through technical terrain like coming to a full stop
- 34:42Speaker 1: up against a ledge. It's pretty difficult for an electric
- 34:45Speaker 1: motor to overcome that, especially in a nine thousand pound vehicle.
- 34:48Speaker 2: So, now this is just to clarify again, you know,
- 34:50Speaker 2: try and understand it from a technical perspective. Electric motors
- 34:53Speaker 2: do do have full torque at the bottom of the
- 34:57Speaker 2: RPM range, right, but this what you're describing right now
- 34:59Speaker 2: is a little bit different.
- 35:00Speaker 1: Yeah, So the motor has to start moving in order
- 35:03Speaker 1: for it to generate all of that torque.
- 35:05Speaker 2: Got it.
- 35:05Speaker 1: So the fact that the that the motors were stopped
- 35:08Speaker 1: and then they were having to overcome all of that
- 35:10Speaker 1: resistance of a nine thousand pound vehicle, it couldn't even
- 35:13Speaker 1: get moving, couldn't even get the motor turning fast enough
- 35:16Speaker 1: to begin to generate all of that insane amount of torque,
- 35:18Speaker 1: got it. Got So that's where another way to solve
- 35:21Speaker 1: it would have been, I could have backed up two
- 35:23Speaker 1: inches and then little momentum, Yeah, and then it would
- 35:26Speaker 1: have it wouldn't even had to have been a lot
- 35:27Speaker 1: of momentum, just something to get the motor turning and
- 35:30Speaker 1: then it would have solved the problem. But it just
- 35:31Speaker 1: means that as we start to use electric vehicles more
- 35:34Speaker 1: in the back country, there'll be a little bit of
- 35:36Speaker 1: a learning curve for us as drivers of like, Okay,
- 35:38Speaker 1: this is how this system works, and this is this
- 35:41Speaker 1: is how we can help it optimize for performance. And
- 35:43Speaker 1: that was So that was an interesting revelation with that.
- 35:46Speaker 2: What kind of can you comment on, like what kind
- 35:49Speaker 2: of range you actually got with the off road driving?
- 35:51Speaker 2: Was it still pretty good?
- 35:53Speaker 1: It was difficult to know because I mean, we used
- 35:55Speaker 1: hardly any power, but it was a fairly short route
- 35:58Speaker 1: because it was it was really just a first drive.
- 36:00Speaker 2: These were still prototypes.
- 36:02Speaker 1: They were had a lot of even three D printed
- 36:05Speaker 1: components and stuff still on them, but they were functionally
- 36:10Speaker 1: like production.
- 36:10Speaker 2: Yeah, they were very, very very close.
- 36:12Speaker 1: But I think that based upon what they're saying three
- 36:15Speaker 1: hundred to three hundred and fifty mile range, I think
- 36:17Speaker 1: if you're in mixed terrain, like I'm thinking an ideal
- 36:20Speaker 1: situation would be like in Colorado when you're up in
- 36:23Speaker 1: the mountains, because first of all, the electric motor doesn't
- 36:25Speaker 1: care about atmospheric pressure.
- 36:27Speaker 2: Right, So yeah, you're not worried about no ratios to air.
- 36:31Speaker 2: It's it's indifferent two changes.
- 36:33Speaker 1: Totally indifferent, which means you're making just as much power
- 36:36Speaker 1: at twelve thousand feet as you are at sea level.
- 36:39Speaker 1: It's not affected by that at all. So that's one
- 36:41Speaker 1: big advantage for the electric sure. And then when you're
- 36:45Speaker 1: going up and down hills, you can take advantage of
- 36:47Speaker 1: the region.
- 36:48Speaker 2: Right. So if you're doing like a long descent off
- 36:50Speaker 2: a pass in Colorado, I mean you're talking like you
- 36:53Speaker 2: could be doing five to ten miles of downhill. Correct.
- 36:56Speaker 2: I don't know what kind of region that gets you,
- 36:58Speaker 2: but I mean it's actually getting power back.
- 37:00Speaker 1: It's a lot because those those motor generators, they generate
- 37:03Speaker 1: an enormous amount of power in region, and.
- 37:06Speaker 2: It gives you great control on the way down too.
- 37:08Speaker 1: Right, it does. It's amazing. Yeah, it's totally amazing. And
- 37:11Speaker 1: it actually has a low selector on the gear shifter.
- 37:14Speaker 1: It's not a gear shifter on the suggestion of a
- 37:17Speaker 1: gear shifter, So you have a standard driving mode and
- 37:20Speaker 1: then you have a low and the low changes the
- 37:23Speaker 1: way that the motor interacts with the with the throttle,
- 37:26Speaker 1: and it also engages regen much more quickly, so it's
- 37:29Speaker 1: like being in low range. And then this was very clever.
- 37:33Speaker 1: I've never seen this before in an electric vehicle, but
- 37:36Speaker 1: it has like we would have a paddle shifter at
- 37:38Speaker 1: the steering wheel. It's on the left side. There's a
- 37:40Speaker 1: regen paddle. Okay, so when you're coming down off of
- 37:43Speaker 1: a ledge or whatever, you can grab full regen and
- 37:46Speaker 1: it will nearly bring the thing to a stop.
- 37:49Speaker 2: So it's almost like engine breaking at your fingertips on
- 37:52Speaker 2: the steering wheel. It's incredible interesting. And this is when
- 37:55Speaker 2: it gets even more fun.
- 37:56Speaker 1: So you're coming you're on you're driving fast on a
- 37:59Speaker 1: gravel road around a big sweeper and you want to
- 38:02Speaker 1: step the rear end out. You don't even have to
- 38:04Speaker 1: do it with the accelerator. You can just grab a
- 38:06Speaker 1: handful of that region and it just rotates the car
- 38:09Speaker 1: around really and you can then you can feed into
- 38:11Speaker 1: the throttle and we'll just hang this beautiful drift all
- 38:13Speaker 1: around the corner. So I mean, it's it's really it's
- 38:16Speaker 1: really fun. It's extremely capable. We have to talk obviously
- 38:20Speaker 1: about the contrary to that, which is it's also one
- 38:22Speaker 1: hundred and twelve thousand dollars. So it's a very expensive vehicle,
- 38:26Speaker 1: but again in the context of a King Ranch f
- 38:29Speaker 1: three point fifty, it's it's just a little bit more money.
- 38:32Speaker 1: It's not as much as we would think with how
- 38:34Speaker 1: expensive new cars have gotten, sure, but it is very expensive.
- 38:38Speaker 1: One hundred and twelve thousand bucks is a lot of money.
- 38:40Speaker 1: As these manufacturers come online, the infrastructure has not quite
- 38:44Speaker 1: come up to be able to support electric for a
- 38:47Speaker 1: lot of backcountry use. So like, for example, you could
- 38:51Speaker 1: do the El Camino del Diablo trail in Arizona, because
- 38:54Speaker 1: it is it's the longest unsupported route at one hundred
- 38:56Speaker 1: and fifty six miles, you would have access to charging
- 38:59Speaker 1: on both ends. Where it would get complicated would be
- 39:01Speaker 1: I'm going to go into southern Utah and I'm going
- 39:03Speaker 1: to kind of bounce around in the mountains and in
- 39:06Speaker 1: the desert with just these small little towns where we
- 39:09Speaker 1: would normally get gas. There's not charging infrastructure there yet.
- 39:13Speaker 1: So until some charging infrastructure develops where you would find
- 39:17Speaker 1: a rural gas station, that's going to become more difficult.
- 39:20Speaker 1: But once that happens, then you're you're looking at essentially
- 39:23Speaker 1: the same range as you have with a current oil drive.
- 39:26Speaker 1: It is the reason why I like these small displacement
- 39:29Speaker 1: diesels like in the Sierra that I drive, because I
- 39:31Speaker 1: get six hundred plus mile range that's incredible, which is
- 39:34Speaker 1: really incredible. And in your truck you can add a
- 39:37Speaker 1: larger fuel tank and you could easily match that as well.
- 39:40Speaker 1: So then you're down in Baja and you're driving for
- 39:43Speaker 1: weeks without needing to refuel in the back country because
- 39:46Speaker 1: you have so much range, whereas that would be an
- 39:48Speaker 1: impossibility currently with electric.
- 39:50Speaker 2: It seems like for off highway use for electric vehicles,
- 39:55Speaker 2: the hybrid still kind of has the edge because you
- 39:58Speaker 2: get some electric power or you can you know, some
- 40:01Speaker 2: of these hybrids you can drive in pure electric mode,
- 40:03Speaker 2: but then you have the backup of the gasoline or
- 40:05Speaker 2: diesel engine or whatever it is, so you're not going
- 40:08Speaker 2: to get stranded necessarily.
- 40:09Speaker 1: Well yeah, which is a perfect segue into talking about
- 40:12Speaker 1: the Wrangler.
- 40:13Speaker 2: Yeah, well, y e.
- 40:14Speaker 1: I mean that one was the it was the first
- 40:17Speaker 1: hybrid or electric that got me the most excited because
- 40:21Speaker 1: it was literally a perfect solution the day that it dropped,
- 40:24Speaker 1: Like you could use that vehicle. However, you would normally
- 40:27Speaker 1: use an overland vehicle, but then you could also drive
- 40:30Speaker 1: a short commute without ever consuming any fuel.
- 40:33Speaker 2: Is that correct. It'll go in electric only mode, Yeah,
- 40:35Speaker 2: you can. You can say electric only mode, and I
- 40:38Speaker 2: think you get about twenty four miles of range on
- 40:41Speaker 2: pure electric driving, which is awesome. I mean, for it
- 40:44Speaker 2: is awesome. Ninety percent of people, that's going to be
- 40:46Speaker 2: enough to use that vehicle as a daily driver not
- 40:49Speaker 2: spend any money on you know, gasoline commuting to work
- 40:52Speaker 2: or running errands around town. And then you can go
- 40:54Speaker 2: and do longer drives and you'll still get decent gas mileage,
- 40:57Speaker 2: and you can go on the trail and it does
- 40:59Speaker 2: sign again Regen also if you put it there's a
- 41:02Speaker 2: there's a Regen mode. I don't remember what the term
- 41:05Speaker 2: is that they use the gvuses for that, but I
- 41:07Speaker 2: mean you can have the electric batteries in that down
- 41:11Speaker 2: to zero. You can put it in Regen mode, drive
- 41:13Speaker 2: it on the gasoline engine and recharge the batteries completely
- 41:17Speaker 2: just through normal driving. It takes some time obviously, you know,
- 41:20Speaker 2: but yeah, you can recover that and it's it's just
- 41:23Speaker 2: it's super cool to have a plug in hybrid like that,
- 41:25Speaker 2: and you know where you don't have to you're not
- 41:27Speaker 2: having to use the gasoline engine if you don't want again,
- 41:30Speaker 2: for short trips, you can really take advantage of the
- 41:32Speaker 2: electric Yeah.
- 41:33Speaker 1: I mean I think about my own habits for my
- 41:35Speaker 1: own daily routine. I live five point seven miles from
- 41:39Speaker 1: the office, yep, so I would never have to consume
- 41:43Speaker 1: any fuel. And right now, I mean, fuel prices are
- 41:45Speaker 1: going through the roof. There's a there's a shortage on supply,
- 41:49Speaker 1: and a vehicle like that completely removes that as being
- 41:53Speaker 1: a concern unless you're going to go do a long trip.
- 41:55Speaker 1: So if you're driving a short commute every day, it
- 41:58Speaker 1: doesn't really matter what the price of fuel is in
- 42:00Speaker 1: that moment. If we're having these spikes and prices like
- 42:03Speaker 1: we're experiencing right now, So I think that that's really useful.
- 42:06Speaker 1: And then the torque of an electric motor in conjunction
- 42:09Speaker 1: with a gasoline engine, Yeah, that's a really nice combination absolutely.
- 42:13Speaker 2: I mean when I drove that vehicle down in Texas,
- 42:17Speaker 2: I wasn't wanting for any more power. I mean, it
- 42:19Speaker 2: feels powerful. It takes off pretty quickly, especially for like
- 42:23Speaker 2: a Wrangler platform you know how fast you want it
- 42:26Speaker 2: to be. Yeah, exactly. You don't need it to be fast.
- 42:28Speaker 2: It's not about speed with that. But yeah, the combination
- 42:31Speaker 2: of the electric and the gas I think gets that.
- 42:33Speaker 2: I don't remember how much horsepower in Turka gen rates.
- 42:36Speaker 2: It's plenty, let's just say that. And especially for off
- 42:39Speaker 2: road driving too. I mean, one of the really cool
- 42:40Speaker 2: things about having the ability to put it in pure
- 42:42Speaker 2: electric mode is if you have the power in the
- 42:44Speaker 2: batteries when you're on the trail, you can do that
- 42:47Speaker 2: and it's also quiet. Yeah, so it's a very different
- 42:49Speaker 2: driving experience in that way, which I really like. I
- 42:52Speaker 2: kind of I didn't laugh at that suggestion that that
- 42:55Speaker 2: would be significant, but I didn't quite realize how much
- 42:59Speaker 2: I would appreciate that.
- 43:00Speaker 1: I remember the some of the Hummer engineers talking about
- 43:03Speaker 1: that because they do so much testing in Michigan and
- 43:05Speaker 1: they'll be in these little back roads in the Hummer
- 43:08Speaker 1: comp and you're only hear like the crunching of the tires.
- 43:10Speaker 1: And they said the number of times that they surprise
- 43:12Speaker 1: deer and other animals when they're out there because it's
- 43:15Speaker 1: so quiet. And to me, that I think is going
- 43:18Speaker 1: to be one of the one of the real upsides
- 43:20Speaker 1: to electric for overlanding is we can when we're out
- 43:22Speaker 1: in the mountains and we're more connected with nature a
- 43:25Speaker 1: little bit. I think that there's times when the roar
- 43:29Speaker 1: of a TRX there's nothing that brings a small to
- 43:32Speaker 1: your face faster than that. But then there's also times
- 43:34Speaker 1: when you do want to be totally silent. How often
- 43:37Speaker 1: do we get to be in the back It's not
- 43:39Speaker 1: that often, So why not just fully experience that as
- 43:42Speaker 1: quiet as possible?
- 43:43Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I agree. I mean I think that's part
- 43:45Speaker 2: of you know, we love getting out there into the
- 43:47Speaker 2: back country, and it's part of that's also just respecting
- 43:50Speaker 2: the resource and the other people out there, right, Like, yeah,
- 43:52Speaker 2: for sure, not everyone wants to have a vehicle based adventure.
- 43:54Speaker 2: There's some people hiking out there, there are people mountain biking,
- 43:58Speaker 2: and I think, you know this, this could help kind
- 44:01Speaker 2: of break down a rift between these user groups too,
- 44:03Speaker 2: you know if I think it would help. Yeah, if
- 44:05Speaker 2: people like side by sides, right, they very loud, They
- 44:08Speaker 2: make a lot of noise, so much so that there
- 44:10Speaker 2: are even some communities that are starting to introduce local
- 44:13Speaker 2: legislation to prevent them from you know, driving like we've
- 44:17Speaker 2: seen this in Moab. Having electric vehicles is I think
- 44:20Speaker 2: it could be a really big game changer as far
- 44:22Speaker 2: as off road vehicle based recreation.
- 44:25Speaker 1: And I think UTVs will eventually be electric too. I
- 44:28Speaker 1: think it's going to be the only way they're going
- 44:29Speaker 1: to solve the problem.
- 44:30Speaker 2: I mean, they're so loud it does electric vehicles seem
- 44:34Speaker 2: to be the future. I mean, I've only my only
- 44:37Speaker 2: real experience so far as driving the four by e
- 44:39Speaker 2: in pure electric mode and driving a Tesla I don't
- 44:42Speaker 2: remember which model it was.
- 44:43Speaker 1: But then you had the hybrid f one fifty for
- 44:45Speaker 1: a little while too.
- 44:46Speaker 2: I did. I got to drive that too, And I
- 44:48Speaker 2: mean I haven't no vehicle that's a hybrid or electric
- 44:51Speaker 2: vehicle has let me down so far as being capable,
- 44:55Speaker 2: and it's I'm excited for it. It does make me
- 44:58Speaker 2: a little bit sad, you know, having invest today. Yeah, sure,
- 45:01Speaker 2: a diesel vehicle. It's like there's going to be an
- 45:03Speaker 2: end to the lifespan of that at some point.
- 45:05Speaker 1: Maybe I think that I think that a lot of
- 45:07Speaker 1: households will end up being two vehicle families. It's going
- 45:11Speaker 1: to make sense to have something like your ram that
- 45:14Speaker 1: can because you try to tow an airstream with an
- 45:17Speaker 1: electric vehicle and your range is going to be very
- 45:19Speaker 1: very short.
- 45:20Speaker 2: That's a good point. So maybe they kind of fall
- 45:23Speaker 2: into the category of being very specialized vehicles. I think
- 45:25Speaker 2: that's what will happen.
- 45:26Speaker 1: I mean, over one hundred years ago people wrote they
- 45:29Speaker 1: rode horses and they would draw their carriage with a horse,
- 45:31Speaker 1: and people thought, oh, it's the end of the horse.
- 45:33Speaker 1: No one's going to own horses anymore. Lots of people
- 45:35Speaker 1: own horses because they're a joy to ride. Sure they
- 45:38Speaker 1: becomes something of pleasure, or they become something or a
- 45:40Speaker 1: very specific task, like if you are working on a
- 45:43Speaker 1: ranch or whatever, and it'll be the same thing for
- 45:45Speaker 1: internal combustion engines. They're not going to go away because
- 45:48Speaker 1: well they may eventually, but it not likely within my
- 45:52Speaker 1: lifetime because they still have a very specific purpose. If
- 45:55Speaker 1: you're in the middle of Africa where there is no infrastructure,
- 45:58Speaker 1: there is no power infrastructure, you're going to need to
- 46:00Speaker 1: have a diesel powered vehicle. And if you're wanting to
- 46:03Speaker 1: tow a real heavy trailer like that or over the road.
- 46:06Speaker 1: Trucking is another challenge that they're trying to overcome as well.
- 46:09Speaker 1: So I think for a while at least it'll be
- 46:11Speaker 1: it'll be that way, but the average consumer, for the
- 46:13Speaker 1: average commute, yeah, it's going to come pretty quick.
- 46:16Speaker 2: Yeah, that makes sense in my mind.
- 46:17Speaker 1: So yeah, all right, Well let's let's talk a little
- 46:20Speaker 1: bit about the twenty twenty two Tacoma that you drove,
- 46:24Speaker 1: and then there was also a factory available lift for
- 46:27Speaker 1: that too.
- 46:28Speaker 2: Yeah. So that was another recent test drive in Colorado.
- 46:32Speaker 2: We were in the front range area, kind of Kenosha Pass,
- 46:34Speaker 2: Georgia Pass around the Colorado Trail. So we took out
- 46:37Speaker 2: the We took a twenty twenty one tierdy Pro Tacoma.
- 46:41Speaker 2: We Toyota's a new factory lift kit. We took twenty
- 46:44Speaker 2: twenty two Tacoma tierdy Pro, a twenty twenty two Tacoma
- 46:49Speaker 2: Trail Edition, and a twenty twenty two to four Runner
- 46:51Speaker 2: tierty Pro. So we had all four of those vehicles
- 46:53Speaker 2: out for three days of driving and it was a
- 46:56Speaker 2: great experience I would I would say starting with the
- 46:59Speaker 2: twenty twenty one with the factory lift, I don't recall
- 47:02Speaker 2: exactly how much for a lift it gives you. I
- 47:03Speaker 2: think it's a couple. Yeah, I think it basically it
- 47:06Speaker 2: brings the twenty twenty one up to the same lifting
- 47:09Speaker 2: clearances as the twenty twenty two, approximately around there. And
- 47:12Speaker 2: I think, like you talked about, it's a bit more
- 47:15Speaker 2: of a leveling than anything, because I think you get
- 47:17Speaker 2: it's like an inch and a half in the front,
- 47:18Speaker 2: maybe a half inch in the back something like that.
- 47:21Speaker 2: It was very comfortable. I think as far as the
- 47:23Speaker 2: comfort of the suspension, it was very similar between the
- 47:26Speaker 2: twenty twenty one and the twenty twenty two, although the
- 47:29Speaker 2: twenty twenty two has a new box suspension, I believe
- 47:32Speaker 2: it is, and it was that was the plush vehicle
- 47:36Speaker 2: the twenty twenty two. At the box suspension, it was
- 47:38Speaker 2: so settled driving through obstacles, you know, having big events
- 47:42Speaker 2: like coming up onto rocks, coming down off of rocks.
- 47:44Speaker 2: There was not a whole lot of bouncing around or movement.
- 47:47Speaker 2: It just felt settled, is the way I would describe it.
- 47:50Speaker 1: And that's that's really nice for the driver too, because
- 47:52Speaker 1: then you're not getting all that head toss, the passengers not.
- 47:55Speaker 2: Getting thrown around.
- 47:56Speaker 1: Sure, yeah, it's it's definitely and it's interesting because the
- 48:00Speaker 1: Tundras the same way. If you get the TRD Pro Tundra,
- 48:04Speaker 1: the ride quality improves quite a bit.
- 48:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 48:06Speaker 1: And also we were just talking about hybrids, and the
- 48:08Speaker 1: new tird Pro only comes as a hybrid. So I
- 48:11Speaker 1: mean you developed five hundred and eighty three foot pounds
- 48:14Speaker 1: of torque from a hybrid drive train.
- 48:15Speaker 2: So, oh, this is the Tundra. Yeah, the new Tundra. Yeah,
- 48:18Speaker 2: got it? Yeah. Yeah. Other notable stuff about the Tacoma.
- 48:21Speaker 2: I guess stylings change a little bit. You know, it's
- 48:23Speaker 2: not performance related, but you know now now the badge
- 48:26Speaker 2: is stamped in the rear quarter panel instead of a decal.
- 48:29Speaker 2: You've got these machined red billet aluminum upper control arms
- 48:34Speaker 2: that are like you see them from like fifty feet away,
- 48:37Speaker 2: peeking out from you know, underneath the fender wells and
- 48:40Speaker 2: what else. The badge has changed. It's like a little
- 48:42Speaker 2: bit of a retro badge. Now. It's bright colors now too, Yeah,
- 48:45Speaker 2: that bright. I think they call it electric lime green,
- 48:48Speaker 2: which won't you won't lose your truck in a parking
- 48:49Speaker 2: lot now now now you won't. It's it's amazing how
- 48:52Speaker 2: polarizing that is. I mean, toot is pretty well known
- 48:54Speaker 2: for doing these bold colors, whether it's like I think
- 48:57Speaker 2: it's grown, I think it's great. I love them too.
- 48:59Speaker 2: I still the Lunar still is my favorite out of
- 49:02Speaker 2: the new colors that they're doing. Yeah, but love that color.
- 49:05Speaker 2: But that electric line is bright. But then feature wise,
- 49:07Speaker 2: I mean, it's got all this stuff that we've kind
- 49:09Speaker 2: of talked about. It's got the terrain select mode, so
- 49:12Speaker 2: you can do rock and sand and there's all the
- 49:15Speaker 2: other ones think mind yeah, and then there's even like
- 49:18Speaker 2: a corrugations like type setting. I had in the rock
- 49:22Speaker 2: mode most of the time because that's what we were
- 49:24Speaker 2: encountering on the trail. Sure, it was great. I had
- 49:26Speaker 2: no traction issues again, trying to use my abilities to
- 49:32Speaker 2: manage that as well, you know, because any vehicle will
- 49:34Speaker 2: spin the wheels if you don't know what you're doing.
- 49:37Speaker 2: Just a really comfortable vehicle to drive overall. Yeah, Tacomas
- 49:40Speaker 2: are so capable. Yeah, the size is just so nice,
- 49:43Speaker 2: you know, especially now having the full size truck. Anytime
- 49:46Speaker 2: I get back into a medium sized truck, it's like
- 49:48Speaker 2: it feels like a sedan to me. And for tight
- 49:51Speaker 2: narrow trails, I mean that's awesome. You're not worried about
- 49:54Speaker 2: scraping up against things. You can get through narrow sections,
- 49:58Speaker 2: and it still had I was really impressed by the
- 50:00Speaker 2: clearance that it had. I mean, we drove through a
- 50:03Speaker 2: lot more technical train than I would ever want to attempt.
- 50:06Speaker 2: Just I think it was to prove the vehicle's ability
- 50:09Speaker 2: and it did really well. Yeah, and I had no issues.
- 50:12Speaker 2: Even in the trail edition to Coma, which was a
- 50:15Speaker 2: pre production model that we drove it locker wasn't working.
- 50:18Speaker 2: Oh and I did.
- 50:19Speaker 1: Trail addition to Coma, not a trail edition for Runner. Yeah,
- 50:21Speaker 1: it was the trail addition to Coma. So it's a
- 50:23Speaker 1: new model it is.
- 50:25Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's got these really handsome bronze rims and
- 50:29Speaker 2: you know, it's mostly a styling thing. It's not quite
- 50:31Speaker 2: as capable as the Tiarty Pro in terms of all
- 50:34Speaker 2: of the features that it has. But even on the
- 50:36Speaker 2: pre production model without the locker working, I did the
- 50:39Speaker 2: all of the same obstacles as the Tierty Pro with
- 50:41Speaker 2: the locker, and I didn't have any issues with wheelspin
- 50:43Speaker 2: or you know. And did it have multi trains select
- 50:46Speaker 2: as well? I believe it did. Yep.
- 50:48Speaker 1: Yeah, So then going into the rock mode would really
- 50:50Speaker 1: it would make the traction control pretty aggressive, which is good,
- 50:54Speaker 1: and so you can see why Toyota sells a quarter
- 50:56Speaker 1: million Tacoma's a year or more. I mean, it's just
- 50:59Speaker 1: they are so capable, and they're so easy to modify,
- 51:02Speaker 1: huge aftermarket support, and they don't need a lot of modification. Like,
- 51:05Speaker 1: right out of the box, you can drive it around
- 51:07Speaker 1: the world and just about an any trail you can
- 51:09Speaker 1: think of. So they're pretty impressive right out of the box.
- 51:11Speaker 2: I was going to say based on that driving experience,
- 51:13Speaker 2: I mean it doesn't need anything. Yeah, you know, for again,
- 51:16Speaker 2: like ninety five percent of the people that are going
- 51:18Speaker 2: to buy that, it's going to do everything you want,
- 51:20Speaker 2: you know, maybe adding some protection. It's a little bit
- 51:23Speaker 2: of additional protection if you're going to take it on
- 51:25Speaker 2: some more technical train. Not a bad idea, but yeah, right,
- 51:28Speaker 2: It's kind of reminds me of like a rubicon, right,
- 51:30Speaker 2: it will do so much straight out of the factory.
- 51:32Speaker 2: You don't need to do anything.
- 51:33Speaker 1: Yeah, there's so Yeah, unless you're doing recreational rock crawling.
- 51:36Speaker 1: I mean, if you're out traveling, it's going to be
- 51:38Speaker 1: pretty hard to find something that's going to.
- 51:40Speaker 2: Stop that truck for sure. Yeah.
- 51:41Speaker 1: Oh that's a cool one. So let's talk real quick
- 51:43Speaker 1: about the Grand Wagon here. It's it's interesting for me
- 51:45Speaker 1: because Jeep is very much targeting the expedition They're targeting
- 51:49Speaker 1: the excursion customer, They're targeting the suburban, the yukon the
- 51:55Speaker 1: large suv market exactly with a third row, and it
- 51:58Speaker 1: is it's a big vehicle, and it also it's a
- 52:01Speaker 1: very capable truck overall. It's got all of that Jeep
- 52:04Speaker 1: traction control hardware, all of that thoughtfulness that Jeep puts
- 52:08Speaker 1: into capability, and it has an error suspension as well.
- 52:11Speaker 1: Extremely luxurious on the inside. It's also clear that they're
- 52:14Speaker 1: targeting range rover customers as well, because this can be
- 52:17Speaker 1: one hundred thousand dollars vehicle if you option it that way. Overall,
- 52:22Speaker 1: it is a very comfortable vehicle. If you wanted to
- 52:25Speaker 1: have like the luxury of a range rover, but not
- 52:28Speaker 1: have maybe the impression that a range rover would give
- 52:31Speaker 1: to people in your circle, then something like a Grand
- 52:34Speaker 1: Wagoneer is actually a great choice because it gives you
- 52:37Speaker 1: all of that capability of a range rover, all of
- 52:39Speaker 1: the luxury of a range Rover, but then you don't
- 52:41Speaker 1: have a range Rover badge when you pull in your
- 52:44Speaker 1: parking lot at work.
- 52:45Speaker 2: A little more understated maybe on the outside totally.
- 52:47Speaker 1: Yeah, So overall I was really impressed with a vehicle
- 52:50Speaker 1: for what it is. It's important to note that it's
- 52:53Speaker 1: not it's big, so and it's going to be difficult
- 52:56Speaker 1: to modify with it being independent front rear suspension, so
- 52:59Speaker 1: it's not going to get a lot of attention from
- 53:00Speaker 1: the overland market. But I think for someone that's looking
- 53:03Speaker 1: for a large vehicle to tow their boat and haul
- 53:06Speaker 1: along a bunch of people, it's actually a really interesting
- 53:10Speaker 1: vehicle to consider. The only thing I thought that they
- 53:12Speaker 1: could have done a little different was the wheelwell is
- 53:14Speaker 1: really small, and the wheelwell is also really low down
- 53:18Speaker 1: on the belt line, so it actually doesn't make the
- 53:20Speaker 1: vehicle look quite as athletic and adventurous as it could.
- 53:24Speaker 1: If they just moved that wheel well line up higher,
- 53:27Speaker 1: they could fit a larger tire from the factory, and
- 53:29Speaker 1: I think it would really it would offset some of
- 53:31Speaker 1: that really tall belt line, particularly above the above the tires,
- 53:36Speaker 1: so it would be nice to see that come in
- 53:38Speaker 1: like a trail addition or a you know, they've got
- 53:40Speaker 1: all their different monikers that they use for trail performance.
- 53:43Speaker 1: But to see some kind of of a trail hawk
- 53:46Speaker 1: rand wagon ear where they had a little bit larger
- 53:48Speaker 1: wheel well and larger tire, I think that would look
- 53:50Speaker 1: really handsome on that vehicle and it would also really
- 53:52Speaker 1: improve the capability too.
- 53:54Speaker 2: So nice now is that like a remake of that
- 53:57Speaker 2: vehicle has been around, right? Correct?
- 54:00Speaker 1: They used to make a Wagoneer and a Grand Wagoneer
- 54:03Speaker 1: and they are extremely popular even to this day. I mean,
- 54:05Speaker 1: this is like the classic late seventies eighties.
- 54:09Speaker 2: You did like wood paneling, any of them did.
- 54:11Speaker 1: The Grand Wagoneer in particular did have wood paneling, which
- 54:14Speaker 1: is really fun. And those are super popular. They've been
- 54:17Speaker 1: they've been buying those up and restoring those with a
- 54:21Speaker 1: lot of popularity. So it's fun to see Jeep bring
- 54:24Speaker 1: back the Grand Wagoneer.
- 54:25Speaker 2: Seems like a trend in general, right, We've seen a
- 54:28Speaker 2: lot of remakes of older vehicles and a lot of
- 54:30Speaker 2: them too much anticipation.
- 54:33Speaker 1: And yeah, I mean the Bronco is a great example
- 54:35Speaker 1: of that. We did a whole podcast on the Bronco
- 54:37Speaker 1: not that long ago, so you guys can check that out.
- 54:39Speaker 1: But yeah, the Bronco a great example of properly executed
- 54:43Speaker 1: retro styling. It just from the front, it looks just awesome,
- 54:46Speaker 1: so really fun. One, let's talk a little bit about
- 54:49Speaker 1: your ram. So as we're wrapping things up here, So
- 54:52Speaker 1: what model did you buy and what was kind of
- 54:56Speaker 1: your first attack on modifications and things.
- 54:59Speaker 2: So, like we talked about at the beginning of the podcast,
- 55:01Speaker 2: you know, we got the full sized truck for towing,
- 55:03Speaker 2: and so when it came down to towing and capability,
- 55:06Speaker 2: we didn't want to be left wanting for any more power,
- 55:09Speaker 2: for any more capability, so we went with the got
- 55:12Speaker 2: the Tradesman trim, which is the basic trim, which is
- 55:15Speaker 2: pretty simple. But actually I've been really trades I've been
- 55:18Speaker 2: really impressed with it is it is surprisingly comfortable and
- 55:21Speaker 2: its you know, modesty. The seats are comfortable, It's got
- 55:24Speaker 2: everything you need. We got a few little upgrades here
- 55:26Speaker 2: and there, you know, biggerfotainment screen things like that, but
- 55:29Speaker 2: we so as far as the engine, that's where we
- 55:31Speaker 2: really invested our money. We got the come ins, So
- 55:33Speaker 2: the six point seven liter turbo diesel and it can
- 55:36Speaker 2: pull twenty thousand pounds and the truck has a payload
- 55:39Speaker 2: of somewhere in the neighborhood of I think twenty three
- 55:42Speaker 2: hundred pounds maybe. Actually had one of our readers correct
- 55:45Speaker 2: me on that because I published an article recently, and
- 55:47Speaker 2: I actually love that. I love being corrected. Yeah, you know,
- 55:49Speaker 2: it's like important, it's really important. I want to be
- 55:51Speaker 2: kept honest with this stuff, and I do my best
- 55:53Speaker 2: to get accurate information. But yeah, I've got some really
- 55:56Speaker 2: good feedback on that. But so I did. I published
- 55:58Speaker 2: the first article on the truck on Expedition Portal, sort
- 56:02Speaker 2: of talking about our reasoning behind it. Like I said,
- 56:04Speaker 2: I wanted towing ability, and when we're pulling the eight
- 56:06Speaker 2: thousand pound airstream, it's it's almost like it's not there.
- 56:09Speaker 2: I mean, you can literally go ninety on the highway
- 56:11Speaker 2: no problem, which is incredible, like really fast airstream. Yeah, exactly.
- 56:15Speaker 2: We're often passing people going uphill pulling the airstream, which
- 56:19Speaker 2: we don't drive it recklessly, but the fact is it
- 56:22Speaker 2: has no issues pulling, and.
- 56:24Speaker 1: You figure every sprinter that you pass is the better,
- 56:27Speaker 1: the better campsite for you.
- 56:28Speaker 2: So if we can beat them there, Yeah, exactly, exactly, Yeah,
- 56:33Speaker 2: but you know, in addition, I think some of the
- 56:35Speaker 2: other benefits of the diesel engine are you. It used
- 56:39Speaker 2: to be an option, but now the exhaust break comes
- 56:41Speaker 2: standard with diesel engine, which is just it is having
- 56:44Speaker 2: driven an old RV previously that was all drum brakes
- 56:47Speaker 2: and having the brakes over heat multiple times on descents scary.
- 56:51Speaker 2: It's terrifying. Yeah, that's like your heart almost just falls
- 56:54Speaker 2: out of your body when when that happens. And so
- 56:56Speaker 2: with the RAM, with towing and the exhaust break, it's
- 56:59Speaker 2: like you don't even have to touch the brakes. You
- 57:01Speaker 2: can put it in toehall mode, turn the exhaust brake
- 57:04Speaker 2: on and it will go down some of the steepest
- 57:06Speaker 2: grades without any break input necessary, which is oppressive. It's great.
- 57:10Speaker 1: So what was the first couple modifications that you did.
- 57:12Speaker 1: I think you just put some bumpers on. Yeah, we
- 57:14Speaker 1: did some bumpers from Expedition One. They're based in Ogden, Utah.
- 57:18Speaker 1: They're an awesome company. They source all of their Yeah,
- 57:21Speaker 1: it's so the bumpers, the range Max Ultra HD I
- 57:26Speaker 1: found it to be one of the best executive full
- 57:29Speaker 1: sized truck bumpers. It's it doesn't look overly chunky and huge,
- 57:33Speaker 1: yet it has space for a winch. We optioned ours
- 57:36Speaker 1: with a full bullbar, so we have some more protection
- 57:38Speaker 1: against animal strikes because you know, if we're pulling the
- 57:41Speaker 1: air stream going even just seventy and the deer jumps out,
- 57:43Speaker 1: I'm not slamming on the brakes. You know, that's more
- 57:46Speaker 1: dangerous than just keep going. Yeah, So we've got the
- 57:49Speaker 1: full bullbar, we've got a space for a winch, We've
- 57:51Speaker 1: got plenty of pods for lighting.
- 57:53Speaker 2: We've got additional clearance. It got rid of it's like
- 57:56Speaker 2: an air faring and air dam. Yeah. With getting to
- 58:00Speaker 2: that and putting the new bump round, we have extra
- 58:02Speaker 2: clearance in the front. And then the rear bumper is
- 58:05Speaker 2: also pretty functional. It's got dual swingouts on the rear
- 58:07Speaker 2: bumpers so we can mount some accessories. So we're going
- 58:10Speaker 2: to be putting a topper on the truck at two
- 58:12Speaker 2: point from RLD and we're going to be able to
- 58:15Speaker 2: mount a ladder on the swing out to easily get
- 58:17Speaker 2: up on the roof of that too. Our flax which
- 58:19Speaker 2: will be good. Yeah, and you can also pull the
- 58:21Speaker 2: spear and put it on the back swing out as well.
- 58:24Speaker 2: Although I tried that and I'm going to need to
- 58:26Speaker 2: get a tongue extension for the airstream. Sure if we're
- 58:29Speaker 2: going to do that, because it actually it protrudes back
- 58:31Speaker 2: a little too far and it kind of cuts our
- 58:33Speaker 2: turning radius down significantly because of the post. Cord has
- 58:36Speaker 2: had the same thing when he had the excursion. Yeah. Yeah,
- 58:39Speaker 2: we kind of talked about that actually just the other day,
- 58:41Speaker 2: and his takeaway was I'm just going to leave the
- 58:43Speaker 2: spar underneath if I can, so. Yeah. I mean, and
- 58:46Speaker 2: you know, in addition to being very functional, I think
- 58:49Speaker 2: the bumpers look good. They look great. They're just good
- 58:51Speaker 2: looking bumpers. Yeah, they've got a nice black powder coating finish. Yeah,
