Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Toni Waterman: US Correspondent on Trump's latest ultimatum for Russia
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: A new deadline for Russia. Trump's giving Pottin a deadline
- 0:03Speaker 1: of ten or twelve days to make a deal with
- 0:05Speaker 1: over Ukraine.
- 0:06Speaker 2: I'm going to make a new deadline of about ten,
- 0:10Speaker 2: ten or twelve days from today. There's no reason in waiting.
- 0:16Speaker 2: There's no reason in waiting. It's fifty days. I want
- 0:19Speaker 2: to be generous, but we just don't see any progress
- 0:23Speaker 2: being made.
- 0:24Speaker 1: So he did give fifty days. You'll remember otherwise he
- 0:26Speaker 1: said very severe terrorists will be coming to Russia and
- 0:29Speaker 1: Russia's trading partners, which would of course include China. So
- 0:33Speaker 1: what happens here? Tony Waterman, us correspondent, Feature story in
- 0:36Speaker 1: News Tony, good morning, welcome to the program.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Good morning, Thanks for having me, Tony.
- 0:42Speaker 1: What is anyone taking this seriously? I mean, when you
- 0:44Speaker 1: give a deadline of fifty days and then you come
- 0:46Speaker 1: and say, no, we've got a new deadline. It could
- 0:48Speaker 1: be teen, it could be twelve. We're not sure.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:52Speaker 3: I mean the President has been for months now giving
- 0:55Speaker 3: a two week deadline to the Kremlins. So when the
- 1:00Speaker 3: fifty day deadline was announced earlier this month, everybody said,
- 1:03Speaker 3: that is an extremely long runway for Russia and everybody
- 1:08Speaker 3: kind of shrugged it off. So whether or not we
- 1:09Speaker 3: see anything in the next ten to twelve days is
- 1:13Speaker 3: really up to Putin. At this point, we haven't heard
- 1:16Speaker 3: anything any sort of response from the Kremlin to this
- 1:20Speaker 3: latest move by Trump. But Dimitri Mendettev, who is the
- 1:23Speaker 3: former Russian president, set on social media that Trump's playing
- 1:28Speaker 3: the ultimatum game with Russia, but that Trump should remember
- 1:31Speaker 3: Russia is an Israel, that it's not Iran, and that
- 1:35Speaker 3: each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war,
- 1:38Speaker 3: not between Russia and Ukraine, but a war with his
- 1:41Speaker 3: own country. So he's implying, of course, that these types
- 1:44Speaker 3: of games could lead to a war between the United
- 1:46Speaker 3: States and Russia. But the President earlier today repeated what
- 1:50Speaker 3: has now become sort of his common refrain, saying that
- 1:54Speaker 3: he's disappointed in Putin for not ending this war. He
- 1:58Speaker 3: feels as if he's been strung along, that the Russian
- 2:01Speaker 3: president has signaled that he would take these peace negotiations seriously,
- 2:05Speaker 3: and then is bombing the Smithereens out of you know,
- 2:08Speaker 3: Ukraine the following day. So ten to twelve days, he
- 2:11Speaker 3: left the door open for more negotiations. Saying that a
- 2:14Speaker 3: deal could be reached. But you're right with the secondary
- 2:17Speaker 3: tariffs that he's threatening if this deadline is not met,
- 2:21Speaker 3: one hundred percent tariffs on any country that buys Russian energy.
- 2:24Speaker 3: That is going to impact not just China but also Russia,
- 2:27Speaker 3: who are huge consumers of Russian oil.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Yeah. It's just fascinating, isn't it, Because on the same
- 2:33Speaker 1: day you've got him saying I'll move the deadline for
- 2:35Speaker 1: China on tariffs and extend that this is the more
- 2:39Speaker 1: substantive trade talk. She've also got him saying I'll reduce
- 2:43Speaker 1: the deadline on Russia and that could potentially bring an
- 2:45Speaker 1: even bigger tariffs for the lives of China.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:50Speaker 3: I mean, with this trade ward that the President kicked
- 2:52Speaker 3: off in April and then paused and is now scrambling
- 2:55Speaker 3: to make all of these trade negotiations, one of the
- 2:57Speaker 3: countries that was not included almost the only that was
- 3:00Speaker 3: not included was Russia itself. It somehow dodged the trade
- 3:05Speaker 3: war bullet when he made the announcement on Liberation Day.
- 3:09Speaker 3: But you're right, they could be now facing not just
- 3:12Speaker 3: more sanctions, which the President talked about today didn't give
- 3:15Speaker 3: details but said he would impose more sanctions but also
- 3:19Speaker 3: a one hundred percent tariff on countries that trade with Russia.
- 3:24Speaker 3: That's on goods coming into the United States. So it's
- 3:26Speaker 3: American public again that will be paying the price for that,
- 3:31Speaker 3: but they could be at the losing end of the stick.
- 3:33Speaker 3: But again, for months and months and months now, Donald
- 3:36Speaker 3: Trump has given Russia two weeks to come to the
- 3:39Speaker 3: negotiating table to take this seriously and its point, Russia
- 3:43Speaker 3: just seems to be shrugging that thread off.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Tony, you appreciate you, Tomas Morning, Tony Wooem and US
