[upbeat music] That's about enough of that intro music, right? Yeah. All right. It's great. Hey, everybody.
• 0:17
It's Full Spectrum Cycling. This is show number 241 or- So close... or, or video show, [laughs] or video show number two. [laughs] You'd think we would've done this earlier, wouldn't you?
• 0:29
Can we, can we change the intro for next week's show? Why? Just get it done. We're 242, man. [laughs] I know. Do you have rights to it? Can we play it? We can play, like, eight seconds of it, can't we? Probably.
• 0:38
Something like that. Yeah, there's... Uh, like I said, nobody listens to the show anyways. Or we'll just vocalize. So what are, what are they gonna do, sue us for nobody listening? Yeah. Vocalize it. No.
• 0:46
Kind of like the, uh- Yeah, get an MP3. We'll see what happens...
• 0:48
the Okely Dokelies, who said they were creating a cover band for Ned Flanders just because they wanted Matt Groening's signature, whether it was in deceased intercept or not. [laughs] Nice. All right.
• 1:00
So today we got Tony. Yep. We got JK. Hi. Splitting the Uprights, Justin. Hello. Hi, Justin. Hi. Briefly met you on one of the Shiverless 24 practice laps and rode with you. Do you always ride a unicycle?
• 1:15
Question number one, he was riding a unicycle. So I've been riding a unicycle for about 10 years now. Um, I started when I was in about eighth grade. Um, I- He's young, so... [laughs] I, I'm 22. I go to UW Milwaukee.
• 1:32
Well done. Um, mechanical engineering. But, uh, but, uh, back to unicycles. We, uh...
• 1:38
So I, I got a unicycle for Christmas that year, 'cause I wanted one, and I'd never seen anyone ride one before, and I was like, "Oh, sounds like a cool thing to do." Um,
• 1:49
and I got one, and I learned how to ride it on my icy driveway. [laughs] There was ice everywhere. Like it was- Whoa...
• 1:55
it was the year where it, like, rained and then froze, so the entire driveway was just one sheet of ice. Um, I learned on that. Um, it took me two days without anyone t- showing me how or any videos or anything. Nice.
• 2:09
Freak. Freak. [laughs] That's incredible. That's balance, man. Yeah. Yeah. That's, that's I think quicker than most, but probably, uh, you know, that's... And so was your first one, like just a Schwinn?
• 2:23
Or- It was a Torqer unicycle. Okay. Yep. Right on. Um, I... It was red. It was great. I had it for about three or four years.
• 2:32
Uh, no, it actually lasted me, like, six years, and then I snapped the crank off of it from jumping around on it too much.
• 2:37
[laughs] [laughs] So now you ride more, um, uh, durable, or are they made specifically for tricks, or riding more radical, as the kids say? Uh, my unicycle currently is a Nimbus, uh, Nimbus, uh, Two.
• 2:53
I think it's just Nimbus Two, and it's a 26-inch unicycle. Um, definitely more durable than a Torqer in my opinion, and, um, I use it mostly for commuting. Um, but it can definitely withstand doing some tricks.
• 3:05
I do some jumping around. I like jumping off of curbs. I, I like going down stair sets on it. Um- Gosh... I've tried doing different, like, spin tricks on it, but I always end up hurting myself.
• 3:16
[laughs] So I- It would happen immediately... honestly- I'm hurting myself thinking about it... immediately. Yeah.
• 3:21
I saw his Nimbus at the union when I was having lunch with Molly, and I took a picture of it and sent to Wayne Gudelski, and his response within a minute was, "I broke those."
• 3:30
[laughs] 'Cause he's a little bit of a lunatic. Love it. Well done. Well, let's, uh, let's talk about the Milwaukee minute, and then we'll talk more about unicycles, I guess. Yeah. I...
• 3:41
Did, did, did you put in this Facebook group link to the new- Isn't that hilarious?... new planters carnage? Have you watched it? Oh. Yeah. I, I joined that one. [laughs] [laughs] Independent of it being in here.
• 3:51
Somebody else just threw that up and, uh- Who set that crap up? I mean, it's just like- I don't know. It's great, though... "We set this up because this has to stop. It's so bad."
• 3:57
Well, but some of the pictures are so good. But, I mean, it's, it... [laughs] How it comes out is being like, "Oh, you know, you know, stop the cars from...
• 4:07
" But it is, has, like, an undercurrent of this is just damn unsafe, and it's putting cyclists at risk, which no, not- Bullshit... not really.
• 4:15
Now they have things that you can s- steal that- It's bringing to attention how shitty the drivers are... have a lot of things. So. True. I think that's obviously- Yeah. I, I cannot...
• 4:22
I feel, I don't feel bad about all the cars that are being destroyed, [laughs] but holy shit. Yeah. There's some cars getting destroyed. [laughs] I know. It's more tough to steal stuff there right now than we can- Yeah.
• 4:32
How's it navigating that, those planters with a unicycle, Justin? T- uh, I don't actually ride my unicycle in the bike lane.
• 4:37
I, I stay on the sidewalks, 'cause I feel like I'm slow enough that I can ma- like, navigate around people well enough. Um, and I don't feel safe enough to ride that thing in the road. Oh, sure. I feel- Yeah...
• 4:48
I feel way more exposed going at such a slow speed in the road than I would on a bike. Yeah. When we were doing the practice lap, you were spinning pretty good. Yeah.
• 4:56
That was, that was a little bit of a harder ride for me, actually. I... It was- Y- you don't ride a unicycle to go fast, right? Well, at least most people don't. Yeah.
• 5:03
Oh, yeah, because on the, uh, on the Santa rampage, I ran into a buddy of mine from old radio days, and he was riding with a guy of a, a unicycle and the penny-farthing. Oh, wow.
• 5:15
And it was like, I didn't know those were the two I was meeting up with [laughs] For that, like, as a ride. I'm like, "Um, okay. Well, I'm gonna... Well, yeah, let's take the alley ride." And they're both like...
• 5:26
And I'm like, "No, actually, for you guys, it probably will be better." I shit you not, but they didn't follow me. But- Yeah. So the only way to go faster on a unicycle- Nobody trusts Michael...
• 5:34
besides spinning faster is have a bigger wheel. Bigger wheel. Yep. But there's, but there's no- Technically, there's a swamp two-speed. Is there... Yeah. Is there a gear?
• 5:41
There's a kick gear two-speed hub that you can put on them. So how do you kick back without crashing? Use your, your heels according to Wayne, 'cause he's got one. [laughs] They're also, like- That's like a fixed hub?
• 5:51
It's a hub that has a two-speed gear ratio change. They're also ungodly expensive. I want... They're over $1,000 for just the hub. Oh. Yeah. Yeah. You gotta have a...
• 6:01
But I have heard that some- He has a disc brake on his bike, too... company, he also has a hydraulic disc brake.
• 6:06
[laughs] Um, but I have heard that there are bicycle companies looking into this, because you can make it a free wheel, and then you have two front...
• 6:15
You know, you have two chain rings basically, but with a straight line It's kind of a neat idea. Uh- But it's way too expensive... sounds like you're making a problem, solution to a problem that doesn't exist.
• 6:25
That doesn't exist. Yeah. True that. That kind of thing, what that- Ride, like, in perpetual wheelie form. Kind of. Maybe.
• 6:31
I could see there being a two-speed unicycle with, like, a, if you have a tall unicycle where you have a chain from your pedals to the- Mm... to the wheel. Sure.
• 6:39
Where you're, the, where you're pedaling in the bottom bracket there, that's one gear, and there's a different gear ratio in the bottom. And then, like you said, have two different gears.
• 6:48
So, like, when you pedal forward, uh, at the top it would spin. It would turn the right gear with, like, uh, actuating it, and then on the left side it would just be free coasting.
• 6:59
And then if you were to pedal backwards- Backwards. Yeah... then it would engage on the left and then not the right. Huh. That, that... First of all, how, how the hell can you ride pedaling backwards? I would be...
• 7:09
I'm a Polish descent and therefore have no talent whatsoever. [laughs] And that would cause me to crash. Right on. I also have a schwinn unicycle, which I suck at. [laughs] He has a tall unicycle too. Yeah.
• 7:21
I have a, I have a five-foot-tall one. Okay. Yep. Um, but yeah, I can ride backwards and I can idle. Um, one time I was on a ride with my five-foot-tall one, just riding around downtown Milwaukee on Water Street.
• 7:32
Um, middle of winter I think it was, last year. All right. And I was just stopped in the middle of the busy road on Water Street, which cars went both ways next to me, and I'm just idling in the middle there.
• 7:41
[laughs] Like, waiting for a way to get across. Yikes. That sounds scary. Excellent. Kind of waiting for the people to, like, "Can they slow down and stop and gawk at you? Okay, now my opening. Boom." Yep. It's always...
• 7:54
Yeah. Right on. So I was just gonna bring up this. Remember, like, last week I talked about being in that TV commercial thing? Yeah. Oh. So it was shot at- Dun, dun... the 1000 North Water Street building. Yep. Dun, dun.
• 8:08
Which is tall and has that arch-y window way at the top of it. Oh, is that where you were? I've been there. Yeah. Guess what's up in that arch window, though? Groups. Nothing. It's like a lunch room. Yeah, I know that.
• 8:18
It's not like, it's not like the CEO's office with his desk- Yeah, they, they used to be one of my clients... like, with his desk to the back and just looking out. Yeah. Right. No. And so above it,
• 8:28
in what looks like a 30-year-old apartment part of a building, above that window is this courtroom. It was built for the Big Blue trial. I don't know if you, you guys remember it, when the crane fell and- Oh, yeah. Yeah.
• 8:42
That's, uh-... and when they were building, uh, Miller Park, and they built it to practice because it was $600 million or something that was on the line, so they wanted to practice.
• 8:52
And they've used it after that for, like, classes and stuff. But it was just weird that, like, it was above the... It was higher, but it was, like, really crappy in there. Except for the courtroom part, which was okay.
• 9:05
Right. Is that where they did the shooting? It's where they did the commercial, yeah. But that was just weird that they...
• 9:10
Ob- obviously, if you, if you're going for that much money, you could afford to build a whole practice courtroom. But it was, like, a full-on judge bench and everything, you know?
• 9:19
Will your commercial be in the show notes? Uh, it's not up yet. I don't know. I would think it would come out around March Madness time. But filming, filming, uh, principal photography is complete?
• 9:28
Principal photography is complete, yes. [laughs] Thanks, John Fredlow, for doing that and getting us on that shoot. Now it's in the editing room. Yeah. That's where all the magic happens.
• 9:37
All the, all the parts with me in it are on the floor already. [laughs] What was the commercial for? Uh, Murphy and Proctorow. It's a law firm. Oh, okay. Personal injury law firm. Cool. I don't know.
• 9:46
They paid me, so I went and did it. [laughs] No, that's- I do think that you would have used Proctorow. [laughs] I know. It's like Dr. Jellyfinger? What? [laughs] Plus, I may need a personal injury lawyer at some point.
• 9:57
Hopefully not. Right on. Yeah. I've been hit so many times by a car and I still- Well, you didn't get hit by a car when we went down to see the WMSE art auction. I didn't win a damn thing. Oh, man, I went into battle.
• 10:07
Oh, did I go into battle mode. Was it against me? I'm sorry if it was. No, I don't think so. Was it Brian Ritchie? No. Okay then. Oh, I went Von Muntz. Oh. So WMSE had a benefit on Friday. It's, uh, art.
• 10:21
One 12-inch by 12-inch art pieces, and then it's silent auction and- Well, it's not silent... several of them. Well, te- I mean, you are technically bidding silently. Yes, it is, Craig.
• 10:32
Well, it's not, because if a silent auction is you put in a number and you walk away. Yeah. This is somebody outbids you, you bid again. Yeah, true that. True that. It's an eBay. Okay. Right. Right. It's eBay.
• 10:42
Yeah, it's eBay. But yeah, some of the stuff went for big money. Yeah. The chess set, which was really baller cool. Yeah. And it started really low on- Especially up front... everybody had the same freaking idea.
• 10:52
It sat there forever. And then, Craig, I walked by it and I was like, "Oh, there it goes." Da, da, da, da, da. I know. I was watching that thing skyrocket. I, I want a chess set. I- And a checkers set. That too.
• 11:02
Checkers set was also, that took a little longer. The Tesla painting. Yeah. But that was, that was one. That was like, what did that go for? Go first. 1,500? It was like 1,500 bucks. Well, yeah. 1,000.
• 11:12
There's 1,000 at the start of the auction. I, I quit- Or sorry, the event you guys were at... I hit EBM to 200 bucks, and that held for about an hour, and then I started to get nervous that I was buying.
• 11:25
I have to tell Molly I bought a $200 painting by Von Muntz. And then someone outbid. Well, I wanted to only win one thing, but I bid on five. You won four. I won two. Eh. Which is okay, because they were both good ones.
• 11:37
But, uh- Wasn't Brian Ritchie one of them? No. Okay. No. By horn, that goddamn Brian Ritchie guy. [laughs] Back in the golden oats. Brian Ritchie on drugs. Do you know how cool that damn thing was?
• 11:47
It was a picture recovered from a fire, and they put it on the thing. It was cool as hell. [laughs] It got to 150. 150 was the... Like, 'cause there were three I was gonna bid on,
• 11:58
and so I was like, "Okay, well, 55 at each." Okay, if I just go to one, about 150. Right. That was intense. Yeah. And then we went from there to, got to see Corey's band just in, just in time, more or less. Had one beer.
• 12:11
It's true. One, one quick thing about, uh, uh, the art auction. If you remember the lady painting, Renee? Yeah, Renee. She's the- Renee... she's our building mate. She has her studio, like- Renee Bebo? Bebo?
• 12:23
That's- She has her studio like 100 feet down the hallway [laughs] Oh, there a couple times. It's like just kind of bizarre. But yeah, and we got to see Victor De Lorenzo. John. Yeah.
• 12:32
And, um- And doesn't John, uh, John K. something have space here? Don't, no, doesn't ring a bell. Kowalozyk or something? Nah, that does not ring a bell.
• 12:41
But I don't, I mean, I know most people in the building, but not everyone. Mm-hmm. Plus there's everybody there's across- Right... the driveway and all sorts- Could be... of stuff around here.
• 12:50
But anyway, yeah, so that was cool, building mates being in the, in the show. While, uh, 1913 is the band that Victor's in with a cello player. I do not recall the name. And a couple other people too.
• 13:01
Yeah, cello and keyboard this time. Named after the 1913 Stradivarius that she plays. Insane. That's gotta be a pricey- Oh, yeah... instrument. Is it a Stradivarius cello? Oh, oh, there you go. I think so.
• 13:13
I mean- It's definitely an old cello... I said it pretty confidently. [laughs] I think it very confidently, but I'm not seeing it online. I thought he- He's been alive, I think.
• 13:18
I thought he was in the 1600s or something. It's like two years younger than my house. Wait, four years younger than my house. Right on.
• 13:26
So while you were riding your unicycle around Justin this weekend, did you see the Wienermobile anywhere? No. The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. Well, apparently it was at Lakefront. No.
• 13:34
Yeah, it was at Lakefront somewhere else. It was all over. Yeah. Yeah, it was at Sendik's up in Whitefish Bay for a while. I think they're doing a diaper drive. Do they give you anything? Or do you- That's cool.
• 13:45
No, you give them diapers. That's cool. Boxes- That's gotta be boxes of new diapers- Well, no, it was-... not filled ones.
• 13:50
That's- A couple Wednesdays ago, a couple Wednesdays ago, they pulled up, uh, on Water and Michigan just as I was leaving Swinging Door after having a hot dog. It was so damn fitting.
• 14:00
I'm like, "Ah, da-da-da-da, the Wienermobile," right after my hot dog day. Does the Wienermobile actually give out hot dogs, or do they sell hot dogs? That's what I was wondering. Unfortunately not.
• 14:09
That's- Uh, it definitely used to. I don't know- Yeah... if it's just, like, a thing that you look at now. I di- I didn't smell any hot dogs when I was there. I think they, not even a T-shirt, nothing?
• 14:18
Uh- Uh, they had the wiener whistles, I believe. Oh. Those are kind of cool. They look like the Wienermobile. They're whis- I should have taken Daniel when he was obligated. I bet you would've lost. I bet next time.
• 14:28
It, it'll be around, I'm pretty sure. Seems to- Who, who, uh, who designed that? I believe it was, uh, what's his face, from- Brooke Stevens... Brooke Stevens from, uh, Mequon, Wisconsin right there.
• 14:39
Yeah, a- along with that other gooky car he designed. Well, he designed a lot of gooky cars. Well, the Excalibur was the goopiest. Yeah, that was- Looks like a- So, all right, I'm digressing...
• 14:47
1913- Oh, and the plant on, uh, Highway 100 Oh, yeah, I remember that. So I was in Paris, and I don't know how, Molly and I ended up wandering into a wholesale candy maker,
• 14:59
and they had bags and bags of candy for you to buy, and then their calendar on the wall was Excalibur. And I don't speak- The sword or the car? No, the car.
• 15:09
And I don't speak enough French, and Molly couldn't figure out how to tell that guy that those were from Milwaukee. I'm like, "That's from my hometown." Yeah, they used to make them right on Highway 100.
• 15:17
Yeah, Highway 100. Yeah, that was fun. That was a funny- Ford, Ford Thunderbirds. Weren't they multiple? I, I don't know what the base of them was. They're, I think a lot of them were Ford Thunderbirds.
• 15:25
I think they did do a couple of Corvettes. Could be. Or others. They were. Well, 1929 Mercedes, actually. Yeah. Yeah.
• 15:31
Total- Garish, like oh, look at the- It was like from here to that wall long, and- Yeah, like a almost, yeah, like a Tim Burton Batmobile. Pretty much. Yeah. Yeah. In that zone, frame.
• 15:41
I heard you guys mention you guys have been hit by cars multiple times. Not we guys. No, just me, I- That guy. How many... You, you've never been hit, you've never been hit?
• 15:50
I have run into a car once, but that was sort of more my fault than the car's. Once. I've never actually been accosted and, and run over by a car. I've, uh- Or been bonked... I've been hit pretty hard three times.
• 16:03
[laughs] Oh, my God. Two other times minor bumps, but yeah, one was Superman flying through the air. Uh, that was pretty scary. Another one, an Uber driver turned in front of me, so I popped him pretty hard. Hmm.
• 16:14
Man, that was- Oh, the other guy, twice on Locust Street- Wow... on either side of the bridge.
• 16:18
Another guy turned right in front of me on my new, my Smitty Electric just after I converted to electric, so I slid up onto his windshield, stared him in the face, and slid back down.
• 16:28
[laughs] And it was a piece of shit Chevy Cavalier. The look in this guy's face was sheer horror. I'm certain he didn't have a pot to piss, and, and I was so mad.
• 16:39
I'm like, "Just get-" Too bad that it was a traumatic experience for you- Yeah... because you could have rolled and just elbowed that windshield just a little bit- Yeah... and would've bonked it real good.
• 16:47
I, it wouldn't have mattered. That guy was such a piece of junk. I felt, I know the guy didn't have any insurance. He, it was an old dude. I'm like, "Just go home." I've never been hit myself, um, luckily.
• 17:00
Um, I was, I came really close one time to, uh, a FedEx driver. I was riding down Humboldt- Oh, good retired... north. [laughs] And the FedEx driver just came, uh, he almost sideswiped me.
• 17:13
I was like right next to his, uh, truck, and he just started merging over into the bike lane, like right into where he was trying to park, and I just started yelling like, "Hey, hey, hey, I'm here. I'm here."
• 17:23
And then there's traffic cones there. It was like doing the construction. So like I narrowly missed the, a traffic cone and the FedEx truck by like an inch on both sides, like at the very front.
• 17:33
And I was like pedaling super hard to try and get through, and- Jesus... it was, it was really close. I, uh, I did have to- I'm glad you didn't get hit by a FedEx truck... uh, I did have to punch a MPS bus one time too.
• 17:45
The guy turned right in front of me, and I was going fast, so I stopped and I s- punched the window. And there was someone sitting there, [laughs] and they freaked, and then the driver slammed on the brakes, and I was...
• 17:56
But what is today, guys? Punching buses day. Love Mardi Gras. [laughs] It's Fat Tuesday. What? Hello. Like two days ago. Well, today in internet time it's, it's- Shouldn't drink so much beer. It's not good for the baby.
• 18:10
What, what happened on Fat Tuesday, guys? Uh, I don't know. You had to drive my car home. Oh, is that when you broke, broke your foot fall off? Was that Fat Tuesday or did I fall? That was, oh, that was Fat Tuesday.
• 18:20
It was Fat Tuesday. I raced to Door Mount Bike Park. That was like a, that was probably 11 years ago. 11 or 12? 11 or 12 years ago. By the way- Let's take a minute and listen to this. Big Sexy.
• 18:33
I'm down here in New Orleans and I lost my voice, so I gotta, I gotta make this quick.
• 18:40
Uh, one week till Mardi Gras, so I will not be calling in next week if you do that, if you do the recording next week, but, uh, I'll try again the Tuesday after that. My plan is simple,
• 18:53
i- and I'll tell you what I've been telling everybody else. I'm in New Orleans, and if I'm still in New Orleans the Tuesday after Easter, something is very wrong or something is very awesome.
• 19:11
So that's where I'm gonna leave y'all. Having a blast. A little broke, yes, but, uh, a couple things fell through for me for the pre-Mardi Gras, but post-Mardi Gras's gonna be awesome.
• 19:23
Uh, love you guys, and I'll check in soon. Happy Mardi Gras. Happy Mardi Gras, Big Sexy. Cheers to Big Sexy.
• 19:30
[laughs] Justin, just so you know, Big Sexy is riding a Schwinn tricycle around the United States trying to hit as many state capitals as he can. Like riding from state to state? Uh-huh. Oh, yeah.
• 19:40
[laughs] On a Schwinn tricycle. I think he's hit 33 maybe or something. Something like that. And he, he rode- Under, basically- He rode to New Orleans? Yeah. Yeah.
• 19:48
It's basically the shittiest Schwinn tricycle you could buy. It's under $200. And he has his own pace. Yes. It, his own- And it's slow. Yeah. It's not, not quick.
• 19:56
'Cause we met him at the ferry and rode from Bayview up here to River West, and it was... You know, I mean, you can't, you can't- I would say it's actually unicycle pace. I mean, we did, we did tow him for some of it.
• 20:09
Oh, I'm thinking lower. Well, yeah. Half, half unicycle speed. [laughs] I rode it around the block at Bremen. Actually, I did not. I circled the corners at Bremen. I'm like, "There's no way I could ride this."
• 20:20
I rode it around the block- Oh, yeah... and thought I was gonna die. I went down the block and then U-turned, and I'm like, "Can't." But Big Sexy, awesome. I, I give my damn hat for that, man.
• 20:29
I mean, thanks for the call. Yeah. Thanks for calling in. Hope, hope we hear from you next week. Uh, and I hope Mardi Gras goes well and you don't, uh, have any jail time or anything like that.
• 20:40
[laughs] Does that happen at Mardi Gras? I bet you it does. Uh, probably not. Yeah. They probably give you a free pass if you're dressed as a tourist. Well, there's always the one person.
• 20:47
There always- Just don't be that one person. Uh, here's the thing. Kona's at it again. Another Buy One Get One? No, this is a 50% off one. Oh. Guess what kind of bikes? Carpet fiber? No. Fat bikes? Yes. What? Really?
• 21:03
Yeah. They've got the, the Wo, W-O, which was s- like 1,799, now 849. And they have the Wo, oh, oh. It's got two O's. I don't know how they say that. Woo. Probably woo. Uh, that was $2,500, now it's 1,250.
• 21:18
And do they- So what are the frame set from them, or is it just bikes? I, uh, I, you know what? I, it came up right before the show, and I went to the site, saw that was a real thing, and looked at them and saw.
• 21:28
But I didn't see if they were selling frame sets, 'cause I don't know. Even if you could buy just the frame set, unless you already have a bunch of fat bike stuff, this is a hell of a deal. That's incredible.
• 21:38
Uh, and it's, goes till March 1st or until supplies run out. Wow. And I'm betting the extra larges, Justin, are br- Justin's a tall guy, guys... go real quick, real quickly because that's- Here. Stand up.
• 21:49
We can, we can do this 'cause we have cameras. Justin's, [laughs] he's over there. He's- I was, I was hoping that you would be, like, short enough where he would just peer over your head. [laughs] I know, right?
• 21:57
It's pretty close. Yeah. So. [laughs] Basically. I am not very legitimate. What are you, six foot two or something? Five. 6'5". 6'5", holy mackerel. I got these shoes that have, like, inch and a halves- Yikes...
• 22:08
like, soles, so it makes me a little taller. His head's probably out of the shot now, it's like- Yeah, right? You're probably, at least. Tall guy. All right. It appears to be complete bikes. Ah, okay.
• 22:17
Well, JK's on the, on the plan. One by, one by 12s. What are their drivetrain are they on? Oh, wow. On the, on the fancy one it's a, it's a nice setup. It's wireless. Meggedish meggy. Oh, it can't be wireless.
• 22:28
Not for that guy. [laughs] Yeah, that would be... Uh, tense. Here we are playing with the interwebs. Yeah. Tense. So Justin, you also have an internship, right? Yeah.
• 22:40
I'm, uh, working at Hays Performance Systems in Mequon, Wisconsin. Uh, I'm their bicycle engineer intern. Um- Good shit. Yeah. It's, so far it's amazing there. Um, love my coworkers.
• 22:55
Um, I love working hands-on with product that gets sold to consumers, um, specifically in the mountain bike, um, kind of category of biking. Sure, sure.
• 23:07
Um, so we make high-end, uh, mountain bike components, including brakes, wheels, suspension, handlebars, stems, that kind of sort of stuff. Yep. Um- And it's under different- Yeah... brands, right? Yeah. Manitou fork.
• 23:20
Wheel- WheelSmith spokes. Uh, Sun- Uh, we don't do too much with WheelSmith anymore. With, oh. SunRinglé. SunRinglé and Reynolds Wheels. So Reynolds is their carbon fiber wheel line. Yep. And then SunRinglé is all alloy.
• 23:34
Yep. And then the Manitou suspension, so we sell forks and rear shocks. Oh. Um, we have our Hays brakes. Got a, got a bunch of them? And then, uh, yep, and then ProTaper, uh, handlebars.
• 23:47
Oh, I didn't know Hays was ProTaper. Okay. Yeah. I love, I, I love the 2020 ProTaper. That's my favorite bar. It goes which, which. Uh-huh. Yeah. And they originally were, like, 680 or something, and then they were 720.
• 23:59
I think they got them a little wider, of 780 maybe now. They got a little flex out on the end.
• 24:04
And with my old man hands, it's, like, nice having my hands not, like, super aggressive position like mountain bike, but more like- Well, it helps with fatigue too. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely.
• 24:13
It's on my, on my fat bike and on my more tour-y bike. I still like regular handlebars for mountain biking, but just don't do that much anymore. I don't wanna break my shit all up. Tell me about it.
• 24:23
Speaking, speaking of Kona, I, I just, I'm nearly done building a custom Kona for myself. Um- What did you, what did you go on?
• 24:31
You- I, I got a Kona Process 134 Was that from their sale, or did you just get a bro deal on it? Uh, I got, um, actually off of Pinkbike. I got the frame set off of Pinkbike. Oh, copy that.
• 24:42
And then- Yeah, th- they do, uh, that's, they have like a, a marketplace, right, where you can- Yeah... buy stuff.
• 24:47
It's actually kind of like a go-to spot for bike components, I'm finding, because you can sort by new or used or, like, you can sort by the, the newness level of their component.
• 24:58
Is it, uh, primarily mountain bikes, or do they do just about anything? He, he can sit down and make me nervous. [laughs] Towering over you- Right... as he was. So no one can be pummeled.
• 25:10
But, uh, yeah, it's, uh- Oh, JK is indicating that [bell ringing] We've made it- To the top of the hill... to the top of the hill. I don't, uh, we could just hodgepodge. I do want one of those tour buses, though.
• 25:24
We got the Distill, the last of the Distill pack, and that's the only one I haven't tried from it. Justin's got it already. What do you think, Justin? It's really good. Uh- This is, uh, what is it?
• 25:36
It's- I'd rate it, you know, like, I'd, out of 10, I'd rate it, uh, eight. All right. It's a double dry hopped, uh- Huh?... hazy IPA.
• 25:44
I'm really liking the double dry hopping that a lot of, especially the next door neighbors do. Yeah. [laughs] Yeah, what's the, the new flu- the new Fluffy's a double dry hopped over there at, uh, Morphic Brewing, right?
• 25:54
Where we'll be convening after the show. I will control my chaos. Seriously. Oh. There it goes. We said to be careful, and [sighs] That was almost me. At least it wasn't me. There you go, JK. At least it's on camera.
• 26:09
There, there, there's two things that are great. It wasn't me, and that, that it was on camera. [laughs] No, it didn't happen. [laughs] Bring the carpet cleaner next week, JK. You'll strap that to my fucking bike.
• 26:23
[laughs] He, he ro- he rode in with, uh, the rear wheel of his, uh, Surly, what the hell is that thing? Low Side. Low Side.
• 26:31
That's what- I do, uh, did you see my, I, I don't know if you follow it that much, but my post on Chris Kegel? So- I did not, but I'm trying this, uh- So-... I'm trying this beer right now... is it good?
• 26:41
I haven't had it yet. So, uh- Thanks... Noel and Son posted a really nice, you know, tribute to his dad. Uh- You okay over there? Chris Kegel- Yeah, I'm fine. [laughs] I was doing one thing. I didn't even notice...
• 26:53
uh, Chris Kegel was the owner of Wheels and Sprockets. He passed away of cancer. Um, and Noel posted this, you know, it's been seven years, and it's really hard. And I, my first, one of my first
• 27:07
times that I ran into Chris, and I'm coming around to you, I had
• 27:12
my brand-new velocity wheel strapped to my back 'cause I was riding back from Ben's where I took the wheel building class, and Kegel pulls up next to me on a recumbent electric trike. Yeah. And he's like, "Nice wheel."
• 27:27
And I'm like, "Thanks." And, and he's like, "I'll-" Did you know who he was right then? I did not. It took me a second. I'm like, "I know this guy."
• 27:32
And it was, it was more I know this guy from the commercials when I was a kid- Right. [laughs]... than, oh, wait, I know you from, from riding around. And, and when I was one of the sausages for Oscar Mayer...
• 27:42
Wait, who did the saus- Clements. I, like, shook your hand and shit. But no, he... And it was the first electric bike I'd ever seen, electric recumbent, 'cause he took off like a rocket. It was so funny.
• 27:51
He was- He looked back at me. He's like, "I'm cheating." He was certainly into recumbents. Yeah, he was. No doubt about it. He had the beard for it, too. [laughs] Yeah, did he? He sometimes had a beard.
• 28:01
Sometimes had a beard. Big mustache, though. All right. Hey, one more thing in the show notes just 'cause it's here and I'm looking at it.
• 28:07
When I was at the post office the other day dropping off some eBay sale, probably a Surly Tugnut or something like that,
• 28:13
uh, sending it off to, uh, Maine or somewhere where they like tugging on nuts, um, I saw an Urban Arrow. Are you familiar with those? It's a cargo bike, long, semi-bullet looking thing. Never seen one in real life.
• 28:26
It was cool. Yeah? Uh, the guy said that he sold one of their cars. This was his attempt to never buy another car again. Fair enough. Uh, he had three small kids. They were none of them in it, but it's got, it's got a...
• 28:39
If you look it up, the link's in the show notes, you could see that it's not just a straight up box. It's got some angle to it. So it's really big. It's got seat belts and stuff too, right? Yeah. Yeah.
• 28:47
And he can fit three brats in there. There's seat belts on a bike? Yeah. In- inside, inside the box- Yeah...
• 28:52
which is between, like, you and the handlebars and the front wheel, which is way off by the fireplace over there, kind of. We are live. Look at that, look at that fireplace there. We are live, guys.
• 29:01
Is that, is that ambiance or what? I can feel the heat. No, no, it's, that, that's from the lights. Oh, could be that. We're gonna be, we're gonna be much more, uh, ambiance-ish down the road. Okay.
• 29:09
So this is the last time- Ambiance?... I believe. It, first of all, it's the last time we're gonna use this layout and that camera. The whole idea was to see how cheap a camera would actually make it worth, worth doing.
• 29:21
Uh, John Schlick watched and said, "That's not as bad as I thought it'd be." There you go. That's high- There's a lot of motion detection, I know... that's a high praise. Yes. Well, that is what I- [laughs] I love that.
• 29:30
So that- I was like, wow. I was moving around a lot, aren't I? Yeah, you're gonna be disappointed next time, though, because I turned that on. Ah. I did not realize. So you can turn off the timestamp.
• 29:40
You can turn off the watch logo. [laughs] Which I, you know, it's like I do that. No free advertising, baby. I just didn't know you could turn the green squares of death off and, uh... [laughs] But yeah, yeah, I...
• 29:50
Did you watch it? Yeah. Oh, yeah. See? See? People are watching this. Uh, as we- As I said, and I didn't realize that I said it last week on the show, I have a face for radio. Yeah, you do.
• 29:59
I didn't understand what you were talking about, and then I was like, oh, oh, oh. Yeah. We'll figure it out. So yeah, so last week of this setup, I'm gonna 90 the table because it's gonna make it better for video.
• 30:11
I mean, we set this room up originally just to do audio, so it didn't really matter as much, but it needs to be 90 degrees. What if you 45 degrees? What if you 45 degrees? See, that's sort of a weird thing.
• 30:24
We need to do that. No, no. So y- we'll, we're gonna evolve how we're doing this. This is the l- probably the last time. Let's just lose the table altogether. What if you 315 degree the table? Whoa.
• 30:36
It's just like, that's an engineer speak word. What if we get the table to start rotating as we're doing it? It's in the room. That would be cool I'd go for that.
• 30:43
I was looking for something that would raise and lower the cameras too, like [imitates machine]. That's called a drone, Greg. [laughs] We just have drones like that.
• 30:51
Uh, by the way, the guy that was filming the thing with the commercial, and the deal, and the arched window, and the house on North Water Street, inside the courtroom he's flying a drone, and that thing was so freaking loud.
• 31:02
[laughs] They're ungodly loud. Well, I mean, it's right over my head. It's, like, sitting right here, and it was like braa. I, I, I, I [laughs]-- My hair was blowing. I was like, "Whew."
• 31:13
I never felt so much joy, was on Brady when this guy had, like, a little personal drone, and being like, "Whee," you know, and just, like, flying it around being a pest and whatever.
• 31:24
And this one guy, I don't really- Probably illegally flying this pest. Probably. Whatever. It was, like, the toy version, like the $20 zing, zing, zing, zing. Doesn't that... Those are the most dangerous. Oh, hell.
• 31:34
[laughs] If you don't have your Part 171, you're kind of- And this guy came out of the bar, and he's just sitting there having a smoke going like, "If that thing gets in, in near me, I'm gonna crush it."
• 31:42
And sure as shit, it just buzzed his tower, and he just went some mock [laughs] -- [laughs] Destroyed this shit on the sidewalk. [laughs] I'd like to, I'd like to do an experiment.
• 31:52
I'm like, "You have done that for so many people." [laughs] I'd... So, like, I'd like to do an experiment. Badminton racket versus drone, squash racket versus drone. Ah. Pickleball racket versus drone, drone.
• 32:04
[laughs] I think a tennis racket's gonna be drone. It's, oh, it's gonna be totally worth it. I'm just wondering which will do more damage. Tennis racket. Uh. Wonder how- No, no, uh. Wonder how- Tennis would...
• 32:15
No, the tennis racket would get, you'd go get good distance. So- I don't know about damage... while, while we were sitting here, I just got a text message that- Baseball bat, yeah...
• 32:24
Bikes Are For Lovers state bike now has buy one, get one half price. Get the fuck out of here. So looks like everybody's, you know, hurting now and, and, uh- Yeah... oh, my God, they have a Kansas City Chiefs bike. Yeah.
• 32:38
These guys got marketing down to a fucking science. That, and, well, that they could do it that quickly is really something interesting. Right. Really. Yeah. Unless that's just a concept they drew up on the Confuser.
• 32:48
Wow. But yeah, if they can do that, produce it, and have it here that quickly, that's impressive. That said, is that 50% off? Uh, that looked like one of the bikes they had pictures on. I don't know.
• 33:01
So now my, now we get more people devaluing my inventory. [laughs] Right, your 420. What a perfect- 59... what a perfect year to get out of the bike business.
• 33:08
[laughs] Oh, wait, I got one more thing to say 'cause we're running late, but did you happen to watch the, uh, who's the bike farmer? What the hell is that guy's, the, the- The Bike Farmer. Is that the Bike Farmer? Yeah.
• 33:17
Did you see the electric scrambler at the bike swap? Oh, no. I, I got into the bike swap one, but I haven't gotten to that. Okay. Well, of course, you know who's riding it. No. It's, uh- Davelunz.com...
• 33:32
who, who rides a fat bike with a, uh, banana seat on it? Um, help me. Art Peterson? Him too, but no. Um, Trek engineer. Uh- Oh, the, with the mustache and the wood bike. Uh, uh- Oh, his name is Greg, I believe...
• 33:45
no, the... No, not him. That's the other guy. Um- In the past... the guy that always runs with, with Lunz, and we know who he is, and I'm drawing a total blank on his name. Dave what?
• 33:52
He does the motorcycle, um, soft labs, uh, anyway. Siegel? Thank you. Um- Yeah, Pat Siegel. So he's got- [laughs]... they have a sign on the bike while they're cruising around, and it's $420.69.
• 34:07
I'm like, "Oh, you're just totally copying State Bike." [laughs] Yeah. But it was fun. Was it a fat bike? No, it was a, like a Raleigh Scrambler, like an old-school- Oh, oh, oh, okay...
• 34:16
that they added an electric hub to. Nice. Huh. Yeah, it looked like fun. Oh, it does sound fun. All right, I got more Pat Siegel stories, but they're gonna have to wait till next week. [laughs] Thank you, everybody.
• 34:26
Uh, video showing them to you. Oh. [burps] Thanks for coming, Justin Parson. Thanks for having me on the show. That was, uh, a little much, didn't you? Justin's like, "I don't know what I got myself into today."
• 34:34
[laughs] Books. Uh, yeah, we'll do this again next week, uh, with upgraded video capability. I think next week we're gonna go iPhone and- What? Apple juice? You're doing iPhone instead of... I'm feeling sick.
• 34:46
We're going iPhone. Maybe. Drinking the Apple juice? I don't know. I had a, I had a, another idea.
• 34:51
Uh, I'm kind of going in steps 'cause I got, I got three beautiful Olympus cameras that will eventually be the, the main thing, but the MegaCart's not actually built yet that will have those on it. Gotcha.
• 35:02
Two of them are gonna be on arms like this, so we can move them around like that. Move them, move them, move them. We're in a room that four of us can barely fit in. Where are we gonna move them? Into that room. Whoa.
• 35:11
Whoa. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. What the hell is this thing doing here? This was never here. It's like, here, not there. [laughs] Uh, it'll be in the other room. All right. Right next door. Gotcha. Probably.
• 35:23
Yeah, when we get around to it. All right. See if we can show people. It's over there. Next week, everybody. Bye. See you.
• 35:32
  [upbeat music]
