Latest / Big Iron Radio / Homelab Brief - Managing the Context Window in Long Agent Loops
Transcript
- 0:02Welcome to the Homelab Brief from Big Iron.
- 0:06Today, keeping a long-running LLM, agent from drowning in its own context.
- 0:12Quick note, this is an AI voice, drawn from a Big Iron guide.
- 0:16Links below.
- 0:18Here's the problem.
- 0:20An agent loop accumulates context with every single turn.
- 0:24Left unmanaged, it eventually overflows the window, but that's not even the worst part.
- 0:30Quality degrades long before you hit the limit, because models attend poorly across a huge prompt.
- 0:36And it costs you latency the entire way up.
- 0:40So managing context isn't an optimization.
- 0:43It's a requirement.
- 0:45There are four strategies, and they work together.
- 0:48One, rolling summaries or compaction.
- 0:52Keep the recent turns verbatim, and compress the older ones into a running summary.
- 0:56The trick is to summarize the decisions and the state, not the noise.
- 1:02Two, an external store.
- 1:05Keep your knowledge on disk and recall only what each turn actually needs,
- 1:10instead of carrying everything in the prompt.
- 1:13Three, subagents spin off a self-contained subtask in a throwaway context,
- 1:18and return just the result, so the messy intermediate work never pollutes the main loop.
- 1:23Four, hand off documents.
- 1:28Write durable state to a file on disk, so it survives compaction and even a full reset.
- 1:33That's what makes the loop robust to its context,
- 1:36being disturbed the agent can always rebuild from the document.
- 1:40Two facts to internalize.
- 1:42A bigger window is not free, it costs RAM and latency,
- 1:46so set numctx to what you need, not the maximum.
- 1:49And a model's genuinely useful context is shorter than its nominal length,
- 1:55and it varies by model, so don't trust a big window to just work.
- 1:59Place key information near the start and the end,
- 2:02and treat context as a scarce resource you curate deliberately.
- 2:06The full strategy guides in the show notes.
- 2:09That's your brief.
- 2:10It's not all.
- 2:29It is.
- 2:31It is.
- 2:32It is.
- 2:33It has a patience.
- 2:34It is.
