- 0:23SPEAKER_04: Plus, as the usual observations, digressions, and opinions from the team.
- 0:26SPEAKER_04: So if you like airplanes, airfields, airspace, and the world that surrounds them, you're in the right place.
- 0:31SPEAKER_04: So we're back after the summer.
- 0:33unknown: Yeah.
- 0:34SPEAKER_04: Anyone remember how to do this?
- 0:36SPEAKER_04: We have to speak.
- 0:37SPEAKER_02: Speaking to these scenes, apparently, don't we?
- 0:39SPEAKER_04: I have to say I'm feeling a bit nervous, a little bit rusty.
- 0:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 0:42SPEAKER_03: I'm trying to remember what my name is.
- 0:44SPEAKER_04: I think how to speak.
- 0:46SPEAKER_04: We need to get some maybe we should maybe we should have rebranded with like flight suits and name badges.
- 0:52SPEAKER_04: And name badges.
- 0:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you would definitely, I think, have been nerd.
- 0:56SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 0:56SPEAKER_04: Either nerd or Edwin's.
- 0:59SPEAKER_04: Edwin.
- 1:00SPEAKER_04: Edwin.
- 1:00SPEAKER_04: I think you prefer Edwin's.
- 1:01SPEAKER_04: Edwin.
- 1:02SPEAKER_04: Edwin.
- 1:02SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:03SPEAKER_04: Nerd or Edwin.
- 1:04SPEAKER_04: You would be rant's.
- 1:05SPEAKER_04: Rance.
- 1:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah, with a Z.
- 1:07SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 1:07SPEAKER_04: Dave would be.
- 1:10SPEAKER_04: Dave's been digging and turning or lifting and turning.
- 1:13SPEAKER_04: Lifting and turning, apparently.
- 1:14SPEAKER_04: That's what he says.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: Antique.
- 1:16SPEAKER_02: It's what you shouldn't be shouldn't do.
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: Lift and turn.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: Is that right?
- 1:19SPEAKER_02: Let's dummer back in.
- 1:20SPEAKER_04: So we call you what Zimmer.
- 1:24SPEAKER_04: Very good.
- 1:25SPEAKER_04: Let's get those let's get those flying out.
- 1:27SPEAKER_04: I can imagine doing you this year in a flyback.
- 1:30SPEAKER_04: Horrible.
- 1:31SPEAKER_04: But the good news is we have a new studio.
- 1:33SPEAKER_04: Yes, we do.
- 1:34SPEAKER_04: Where we have a fully revised studio.
- 1:36SPEAKER_04: We do.
- 1:37SPEAKER_04: And and it's it's work in progress.
- 1:39SPEAKER_04: I think there's still some stuff to do.
- 1:40SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:41SPEAKER_04: But it's looking good.
- 1:46SPEAKER_05: I know.
- 1:47SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:49SPEAKER_03: And some new mugs.
- 1:50SPEAKER_04: And some new mugs.
- 1:51SPEAKER_04: We should talk about those in the show.
- 1:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:53SPEAKER_03: Talking of the show.
- 1:55SPEAKER_04: Let's go.
- 1:56SPEAKER_04: Welcome to this week's Flyer Show.
- 1:58SPEAKER_04: We're back from our summer break.
- 2:00SPEAKER_04: But it's drizzly and horrible at once break.
- 2:02SPEAKER_04: My name's Ian Seeger.
- 2:03SPEAKER_04: I'm Ed Hicks.
- 2:04SPEAKER_04: And I'm Dave Corderwood.
- 2:05SPEAKER_04: In this week's show, we'll be talking about the Laple and Laple paperwork.
- 2:08SPEAKER_04: Make sure you don't get grounded.
- 2:09SPEAKER_04: Listen right through to the end to make sure you know what you need to know for that.
- 2:13SPEAKER_04: We've also got tons of news and all sorts of other bits and pieces.
- 2:16SPEAKER_04: But and fantasy hangers making a return, so keep your eye open for that.
- 2:20SPEAKER_04: Before we get into that, if you enjoy the Flyer show and you haven't already subscribed to us on YouTube, please do so.
- 2:26SPEAKER_04: It really helps the channel, really helps us do what we want, and helps you find us again next week.
- 2:31SPEAKER_04: So give us a subscribe, that would be great.
- 2:33SPEAKER_04: As always, we welcome back our sponsor, Sky Demon.
- 2:37SPEAKER_04: We couldn't do it without them.
- 2:38SPEAKER_04: And here is this week's top tip.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: Hi, I'm Hannah from Sky Demon, and this is this week's top tip.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: During a flight, you might want to pan around to inspect other areas of the map.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: If your own aircraft symbols off the screen, you'll see this little yellow arrow showing how far away you are with a countdown timer which will automatically pan back after 15 seconds.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: If you don't want to wait, just tap the arrow.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: For more information, go to our website skydemon.arrow.
- 3:15SPEAKER_03: So the yellow arrow.
- 3:16SPEAKER_03: That's not a British display team of one.
- 3:20SPEAKER_04: No, no.
- 3:21SPEAKER_04: Faded yellow paint.
- 3:23SPEAKER_04: Um no, the yellow arrow, it it does more than it appears.
- 3:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah, a useful helper on your iPad.
- 3:29SPEAKER_04: Points to where you are, amongst other things.
- 3:31SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 3:32SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 3:32SPEAKER_04: Leads the way.
- 3:34SPEAKER_03: Very good.
- 3:34SPEAKER_03: Now, if you're expecting to see the weather, it'll be coming up later.
- 3:39SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 3:40SPEAKER_04: Now I know when we tried this before, there was a few people who weren't that keen, but that was in days when we were absolutely live all the time.
- 3:45SPEAKER_04: Now it's a pre-recorded show.
- 3:47SPEAKER_04: The weather's at the end.
- 3:47SPEAKER_04: If you're desperate for the weather, and that's the only reason you've tuned in for, I mean, there's probably maybe one or two people who do that.
- 3:54SPEAKER_04: Hey.
- 3:55SPEAKER_04: Um, Henry, uh, behind the camera, Henry, there would have usefully made a chapter in the uh description.
- 4:00SPEAKER_04: You can click to it and go straight there, as it were.
- 4:02SPEAKER_04: So you're not losing anything.
- 4:04SPEAKER_04: No.
- 4:04SPEAKER_04: Well, why not wait and hatch it later?
- 4:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 4:08SPEAKER_04: Partly because we've got some great news.
- 4:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 4:10SPEAKER_04: News?
- 4:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:11SPEAKER_02: Well, it's been an August full of some news.
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: It has.
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 4:15SPEAKER_04: Has.
- 4:15SPEAKER_04: And I don't know if you remember, um, some of you were there, obviously, uh, before we decided to shut up shop for the for the summer, we decided we were going to have a flying, and we we challenged Annabelle to go organise a flying, and she organised a cracker for us.
- 4:29SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 4:29SPEAKER_04: It was fantastic.
- 4:31SPEAKER_04: It was absolutely stunning.
- 4:32SPEAKER_04: It was held at at Stevenson, um, which is near Abingdon.
- 4:36SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 4:36SPEAKER_04: Um, and it's the home of Oh, it's the ome.
- 4:39SPEAKER_04: It's the home.
- 4:40SPEAKER_04: Oh my H's.
- 4:41SPEAKER_04: I need a delivery of H's, please.
- 4:45SPEAKER_04: It's the home of Aces High.
- 4:46SPEAKER_04: Fantastic gallery.
- 4:47SPEAKER_04: What a what a I'd never been there before.
- 4:49SPEAKER_04: What a stunning place.
- 4:50SPEAKER_03: I know A, incredibly long.
- 4:52SPEAKER_03: What was it?
- 4:52SPEAKER_03: 1300 metres or something?
- 4:55SPEAKER_04: Mad.
- 4:55SPEAKER_04: Over a kilometer, yeah.
- 4:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 4:57SPEAKER_04: Screech to a halt.
- 4:58SPEAKER_03: Perhaps the biggest grass strip I've ever been into.
- 5:00SPEAKER_03: It was huge, um, massively wide as well.
- 5:03SPEAKER_03: Uh loads of parking and just fantastic, friendly people who ran and all the Mark Dale and his team at Aces High, just amazing.
- 5:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 5:13SPEAKER_04: Top feat.
- 5:13SPEAKER_04: We should get an Aces High logo and stick it on the wing or something.
- 5:16SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 5:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 5:17SPEAKER_04: And what we were lucky with was the weather, too.
- 5:19SPEAKER_04: It was gorgeous.
- 5:20SPEAKER_03: Absolutely Scorchio.
- 5:22SPEAKER_03: Scorchio.
- 5:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 5:23SPEAKER_03: Um and over 70 aeroplanes turned up, which was fantastic.
- 5:27SPEAKER_03: Thanks to all of you who flew in.
- 5:29SPEAKER_03: Um, and unsurprisingly, we made a video.
- 5:31SPEAKER_03: So if you haven't seen the video, check it out.
- 5:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:35SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 5:36SPEAKER_03: Not everyone had such a lovely summer as that, Ed.
- 5:40SPEAKER_03: No.
- 5:40SPEAKER_03: Sadly, uh back in the middle of August, uh, Britain's most his famous historic aircraft, the 1934-built De Havilland DH-88 Comet Racer, uh, better known as Grosvenor House, uh, that was badly damaged in a landing accident, uh, old ordinary aerodrome um during the Shuttleworth Flying Proms display.
- 5:59SPEAKER_03: Now, the good news was the pilot was um had minor injuries, but he was released from hospital.
- 6:04SPEAKER_03: But the pretty much the whole aviation world held their breath while waiting for news on the comet.
- 6:11SPEAKER_03: And obviously, we then found out a uh a week or two later that actually the good news is that Shuttleworth are going to rebuild the comet and they're going to have a big fundra fundraising campaign.
- 6:23SPEAKER_03: They've got to raise£250,000 to help with the cost of the rebuild.
- 6:28SPEAKER_03: Um, I guess probably the insurance access and um providing parts for the future of the aeroplane.
- 6:35SPEAKER_03: But Shuttleworth are using it as an opportunity um to um to go through the aeroplane fully, um restore, renew, um, repair some things, and put some new spares in the in the kind of support package for the comet.
- 6:50SPEAKER_03: Because importantly, the comet is um in in uh it's gonna be a hundred years coming up uh of since the race that the Comet famously won.
- 7:00SPEAKER_03: So in 1934, um the Comet won the um the early 2026.
- 7:06SPEAKER_03: I know, but I suspect um so Shuttleworth's aim is to have the aeroplane ready again for the hundredth anniversary of that race.
- 7:14SPEAKER_03: And I I would imagine we're looking at at least a five-year rebuild on that aeroplane.
- 7:20SPEAKER_03: So um so uh Shuttleworth's aiming to have it ready in good time for that anniversary, but um I I would say if you're expecting to see the comet flying in a year or two, that's not going to be the case.
- 7:31SPEAKER_04: No, no, yeah.
- 7:32SPEAKER_04: It's uh I mean as is as are most things these days, it was captured on video by many different people from many different people, many different angles, and um and it was it was it was quite a slow motion accident.
- 7:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 7:44SPEAKER_04: Um but you can see in some of the videos that when the when the toe hit the ground it basically broke the back of the aircraft.
- 7:50SPEAKER_03: It snapped in half.
- 7:51SPEAKER_03: Um you know, like we said, luckily, no no injuries, uh well no no major injuries.
- 7:55SPEAKER_03: Um and no obviously nothing happened to any of other participants of the air show, but um yeah, very sad to see.
- 8:02SPEAKER_03: Um uh but you know, it's uh what's it's happened and uh it's all about moving forwards for them.
- 8:10SPEAKER_03: So I it an exciting opportunity, I think, to to for the rebuild.
- 8:15SPEAKER_03: And they are setting up a dedicated section on their website, which I'm sure is going to be a you know a real fascinating tale on how that airplane gets rebuilt.
- 8:23SPEAKER_03: So um we'll put a link in the description to that.
- 8:25SPEAKER_03: Um in the streaming live whenever they're working on the street.
- 8:28SPEAKER_03: I think that would be a little live stream.
- 8:30SPEAKER_03: I I would watch that because I am that much of a nerd.
- 8:33SPEAKER_03: It's like, oh my word, look at that scarf.
- 8:35SPEAKER_03: You got one viewer.
- 8:37SPEAKER_02: In other news, uh there's quite a bit of airfield news going on.
- 8:41SPEAKER_02: Red Hill Aerodrome is uh back again um because it's apparently it's going to be the preferred option uh by Tandridge District Council, the local council, for a major new settlement uh in the it's an upcoming local plan.
- 8:56SPEAKER_02: Um so this proposal to conclude it would be around 2,250 homes, houses, plus all the local facilities that a community needs.
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: So basically it just take over that whole area.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: Um it's the latest and probably the final chapter in a long-running battle for this over the Surrey Aerodrome.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: Uh, Red Hill currently operates with grass runways.
- 9:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's notoriously prone to waterlogging during winter.
- 9:23SPEAKER_02: The owners of the airfield reckon it's closed for three months of the year through the winter, just because it's in low-lying fields, basically.
- 9:30SPEAKER_02: Um, you have to say the owners have tried everything to try and make this aircraft airfield work financially for them.
- 9:37SPEAKER_02: They tried to build a hard runway, and that was a long-running battle and on and on and on.
- 9:43SPEAKER_02: Um and it was refused.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: Went right to the top to the high court and it was refused.
- 9:48SPEAKER_02: The refusal was because it's right in the middle of the Greenbelt.
- 9:51SPEAKER_04: So let's build some houses, let's build 2,000 freaking houses.
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 9:56SPEAKER_02: Just crazy.
- 9:57SPEAKER_02: It's a it's a big deal losing if we do lose Red Hill, because there's about 25 businesses there, or many of them aviation related.
- 10:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:05SPEAKER_02: And because of closures elsewhere, Red Hill is now an important pilot training place.
- 10:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, lot uh flying clubs from all over the uh southeast use it for uh for practice, for you know landing, good, for landerways and things like that.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: So it'd be a real loss.
- 10:22SPEAKER_02: Um and where will all those pilots go?
- 10:24SPEAKER_02: And airplanes.
- 10:26SPEAKER_02: And airplanes, yeah.
- 10:27SPEAKER_03: Lots of aeroplanes hangout, it's it's this whole thing.
- 10:29SPEAKER_02: I mean, I can the ones on the south of Red Hill might go to places like Shoreham, but it's yeah, it's it's but geographically.
- 10:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 10:39SPEAKER_03: I mean it's it I we we always look I we're always sad when air when airfields are under threat.
- 10:45SPEAKER_03: But you think it's it's the knock-on effect.
- 10:48SPEAKER_03: I mean people going, what am I gonna do with my airplane?
- 10:50SPEAKER_03: Uh it's not gonna work, I'm gonna give up flying.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: So there's a consultation, a consultation closed this week on Wednesday.
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: So um we just have to wait and see what happens there.
- 11:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: There's a couple of other stories about airfields.
- 11:03SPEAKER_02: There's Solent Airport.
- 11:05SPEAKER_02: Um, there's they've got a few challenges coming up, but they've got a new manager, Matt Wilkins, who you may remember was uh manager at uh Old Buckenham Airfield for 10 years.
- 11:15SPEAKER_02: Uh he introduced the really popular air show up there.
- 11:18SPEAKER_02: Um Matt is also chair of the British Air Display Uh Association and also the General Aviation Awareness Council, which we call GAC.
- 11:27SPEAKER_02: Um, anyway, but but one of his first challenges is going to be dealing with Ferrum Council's plan to develop more business areas on the airfield.
- 11:36SPEAKER_02: Um, I mean the council said very clearly they want to keep it an airfield.
- 11:40SPEAKER_02: Good.
- 11:41SPEAKER_02: But yeah, they're eating around the edges, and uh they want to build something called Swordfish Business Park.
- 11:47SPEAKER_02: Um it it could work out very well because many of the businesses will be aviation related and use the runway.
- 11:54SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, it's just something to keep an eye on, really.
- 11:57SPEAKER_04: I think whenever you get I mean airfields we know can be expensive places to to run, and so they need as many revenue streams as they can.
- 12:04SPEAKER_04: So and quite uh uh an obvious one is property rent and stuff like that, and land around them.
- 12:09SPEAKER_04: Um the issue comes when every when all of the businesses have nothing to do with aviation, all of a sudden a council looks at it and goes, We're making a ton of money out of that property and then spending a whole ton of it on the airfield.
- 12:19SPEAKER_04: Why don't we just close the airfield and have more property?
- 12:21SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and that that's what causes the issue.
- 12:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:23SPEAKER_02: Well, hopefully Solent's going to be uh safe from that.
- 12:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:26SPEAKER_02: Particularly if it if they keep the aviation businesses on site.
- 12:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 12:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 12:30SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 12:31SPEAKER_02: Final little story about an airfield is Compton Abbas, one of our favourites.
- 12:34SPEAKER_02: They've introduced a weekly park run on Saturday morning.
- 12:38SPEAKER_02: So it will close the runway from 8 30 in the morning to eleven o'clock.
- 12:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's quite a busy time for many, you know, many airfields.
- 12:46SPEAKER_03: And I I so I heard that actually this came into play and there was no consultation with any of the based aircraft.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: No, it's it's it's kind of just been come around.
- 12:57SPEAKER_02: The justification for it is that um they want to strengthen ties with the local community, which is very important at a place like Continabas.
- 13:04SPEAKER_02: I mean it's that it's in an outstanding area of natural beauty.
- 13:08SPEAKER_02: So they've really got a whole bunch of people they need to keep on side.
- 13:13SPEAKER_02: And so they you know, this p parkrun thing by having locals come down, spending a couple of hours there on a on a week weekend morning, um, it's it's a good thing in one way, but obviously stopping operations on a Saturday morning is not not great for the business as an airfield.
- 13:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:32SPEAKER_04: Parkruns fantastic organisation, it's just the timing of it on a all park runs take place at the same time on a Saturday morning.
- 13:37SPEAKER_04: You know, taking the airfield out of commission for that long is a bit of a Yeah, and 'cause it's a bit awkward if you want to get away for your weekend.
- 13:43SPEAKER_04: Exactly, yeah.
- 13:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:45SPEAKER_03: So um yeah, just and I I was just very surprised when I read that this kind of happened and because you know, good management of an airfield, it's all about ongoing discussion, isn't it?
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 13:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 13:56SPEAKER_02: Um Well the airfield is f is is making it clear that um they're gonna keep running as an airfield.
- 14:01SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 14:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:02SPEAKER_02: And they want to keep operating around those hours.
- 14:04SPEAKER_02: Uh but um well, we just have to see how that goes.
- 14:07SPEAKER_02: Here it goes.
- 14:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 14:09SPEAKER_04: It's a good opportunity for a few pilots to start off their weekend with a bit of a run.
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no thanks.
- 14:16SPEAKER_04: You can you can walk around a part run as well.
- 14:18SPEAKER_04: So uh coming up in November, we've got the PCL Awards, Pilot Careers Live.
- 14:21SPEAKER_04: These are the awards for the professional flight training industry.
- 14:24SPEAKER_04: Um they take place uh on the Friday evening before the Pilot Careers Live show at Heathrow.
- 14:30SPEAKER_04: Uh so it's early November, and nominations are currently open.
- 14:33SPEAKER_04: Um please go to pilotcareerslive.com forward slash awards, take a look at the categories and make some entries.
- 14:40SPEAKER_04: You can recommend people, you can you don't have to be part of an ATO, you don't have to be part of a DTO, you don't have to be anyone can recommend anybody that fits into the categories.
- 14:49SPEAKER_04: So jump on there and uh make some make some awards.
- 14:51SPEAKER_04: You had a really cracking launch event last year with some really great winners.
- 14:55SPEAKER_03: And I'm guessing this is things this is things like um like uh like best instructor, is it?
- 15:00SPEAKER_04: Yep, there's there's yeah, best best instructor.
- 15:03SPEAKER_04: There's all sorts of different things.
- 15:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and there's I think there's a like is there a lifetime achievement award as well.
- 15:07SPEAKER_04: There is there is a lifetime achievement award, yeah.
- 15:09SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: And it also recognises some of the students as well.
- 15:12SPEAKER_02: Fantastic.
- 15:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:13SPEAKER_02: So it's uh it's an all-encompassing set of awards.
- 15:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 15:16SPEAKER_03: So if you know someone who deserves a nomination, like Ian says, get it in.
- 15:20SPEAKER_03: Get nominating.
- 15:21SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 15:22SPEAKER_04: Um okay, so around this time we would normally have club news, but we're not gonna do club news anymore.
- 15:28SPEAKER_04: What I am gonna do is say a big, big and quick thank you to everybody who is already a member of the Flyer Club.
- 15:34SPEAKER_04: Your membership really helps us do this and everything else that we do.
- 15:38SPEAKER_04: Um, in fact, uh, like we say at the beginning, we couldn't do this without Sky Demon.
- 15:41SPEAKER_04: We couldn't do this without you, the members, either.
- 15:44SPEAKER_04: So if you're already a member, please check out the benefits that you get.
- 15:47SPEAKER_04: Um log into the website, top right, you'll see dashboard, and on your members' dashboard, you'll have access to your to your weather, to the free landing fees, to all of the various discounts, to the uh previous webinars and stuff like that, and upcoming webinars.
- 16:01SPEAKER_04: Um you'll have it all there.
- 16:02SPEAKER_04: If you watch this regularly and you consume other stuff that we do regularly, please consider joining us.
- 16:07SPEAKER_04: We'd love to have you on board and it helps us continue what we do.
- 16:10SPEAKER_04: Um the place to go for that, flyer.co.uk forward slash mem forward slash membership.
- 16:16SPEAKER_04: And even more compelling reason to do it now is that from the 1st of October, prices will be increasing slightly.
- 16:22SPEAKER_04: We've held them for a couple of years now.
- 16:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah um but they need to they do need to go up.
- 16:26SPEAKER_04: If you want to save yourself a bit of money, go and join right now before the end of October.
- 16:30SPEAKER_04: Coincides with the Apple thing.
- 16:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 16:32SPEAKER_04: So there you go.
- 16:34SPEAKER_03: Best value in general aviation that we think you're in general aviation.
- 16:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 16:39SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 16:42SPEAKER_04: Do you fly on a lapple light aircraft pilot's license?
- 16:44SPEAKER_04: If you do, you need to watch this.
- 16:46SPEAKER_04: So there's a date, in fact, there's two dates that you really need to keep in mind: September the 30th and October the 1st.
- 16:53SPEAKER_04: Because although the Laple is not about to disappear, the way that you keep your laptop valid is changing.
- 16:58SPEAKER_03: And this is one of those licensing changes where it's quite easy to think uh the laple changes in October and think, right, my license expires.
- 17:07SPEAKER_02: Well, I've got the I've got many of the answers right here in my magic book.
- 17:11SPEAKER_02: Uh-huh.
- 17:11SPEAKER_02: It's called an iPad.
- 17:13SPEAKER_02: So let's uh let's get that one out of the way straight away.
- 17:16SPEAKER_02: Your existing UK Laple A, that's the light aircraft pilots license aeroplanes, does not expire on the 30th of September.
- 17:24SPEAKER_02: What changes from the 1st of October 2026 is the system used to maintain the privileges associated with it.
- 17:32SPEAKER_04: That's right.
- 17:32SPEAKER_04: So the CEA stopped issuing new lapals back in October 2025.
- 17:38SPEAKER_04: Existing licenses remain valid.
- 17:40SPEAKER_04: I know a few people have phoned the CA, and a few people at the CA have said, Oh, yeah, you need to get yourself a national pilots license.
- 17:46SPEAKER_04: That's wrong.
- 17:47SPEAKER_04: Uh those people have been rebriefed, I believe.
- 17:49SPEAKER_04: Um so your lap or is still an existing license.
- 17:54SPEAKER_04: However, from October, the airplane class is shown on your license.
- 17:58SPEAKER_04: So SCP LAND, SCP-C, single engine piston, single engine piston C, and tearing motor grinder.
- 18:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 18:05SPEAKER_04: Um, the way that they are kept, they need to be noted in section 12 of your licence, and the way that they are kept valid, if you like, has changed.
- 18:14SPEAKER_03: Uh so what do Laple holders have to do between now and the end of September?
- 18:18SPEAKER_02: Well, for the moment you carry on using the existing Laple system, which is what's known as a rolling 24-month recency system.
- 18:26SPEAKER_02: And what that means is before every flight, you look back over the previous 24 months, and in that 24 months, from whatever day you're about to fly, you need to have at least 12 hours of flight time as pilot in command, uh, or flying dual or flying solo under a instructor's supervision.
- 18:43SPEAKER_02: But pilot in command is the uh crucial phrase.
- 18:45SPEAKER_02: That must include at least 12 takeoffs and 12 landings, plus refresher training comprising of at least one hour with an instructor.
- 18:53SPEAKER_02: Alternatively, if you haven't managed that, you can uh pass, you can have passed a lap proficiency proficiency check within the previous 24 months.
- 19:03SPEAKER_03: And there's a word in there that has been causing some confusion, isn't there?
- 19:06SPEAKER_03: And that's rolling.
- 19:07SPEAKER_02: Yes, what rolling means is you you it doesn't mean you have to get to a particular date every two years and then suddenly renew everything.
- 19:14SPEAKER_02: The rolling bit means you have to meet those requirements on the day of every flight.
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: So before you go flying, you have to check your license, make sure you meet those requirements.
- 19:23SPEAKER_04: So, but just to be clear, they are the current requirements, the rolling validity, and that remains until September the 30th.
- 19:31SPEAKER_02: That's correct.
- 19:32SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 19:32SPEAKER_04: So if you're short of one of those requirements, it doesn't automatically mean that you need to take a proficiency check.
- 19:37SPEAKER_04: It means that you need to complete whatever is missing before exercising the privileges of that licence.
- 19:42SPEAKER_04: So that could mean, as you say, flying dual with an instructor or where appropriately arranged, uh flying solo under the uh supervision of an instructor.
- 19:52SPEAKER_04: Um however, just to repeat it one more time, because it is confusing and it is important, between now and the 30th of September, if you have a lapple, you have to meet the rolling requirements.
- 20:04SPEAKER_04: So you have to the day you're gonna go flying, you have to look back and make sure that all of those requirements are met.
- 20:11SPEAKER_04: Um to be that's it by the 30th.
- 20:16SPEAKER_04: So it changes from the 1st of October.
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: That's correct.
- 20:19SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 20:20SPEAKER_03: Uh so how do you go about getting that done?
- 20:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you're essentially two routes.
- 20:25SPEAKER_02: First is revalidation by experience.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: So during the pre twenty previous 24 months, before the licence endorsement, you need at least 12 hours in the relevant class.
- 20:34SPEAKER_02: That must include six hours during the final 12 months, six hours as pilot in command, 12 takeoffs and landings, and at least one hour of refresher training with a flight instructor or a class rating instructor, CRI.
- 20:46SPEAKER_03: So a lapel holder may have already done all of those things?
- 20:49SPEAKER_02: Quite possibly, um, but somebody has to check it and make the endorsement in your license.
- 20:54SPEAKER_02: Uh, an examiner or an instructor holding the appropriate uh UK FCL dot 945 privileges uh has to confirm you've met the requirements.
- 21:05SPEAKER_02: Uh and there's an important detail here: if an instructor makes the endorsement, uh that instructor must also have covered your uh conducted your refresher training.
- 21:14SPEAKER_02: Uh okay.
- 21:15SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 21:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:15SPEAKER_02: So he know he knows how you fly, basically.
- 21:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 21:20SPEAKER_04: Um and if you don't have the required experience?
- 21:23SPEAKER_02: The alternative is a proficiency check with an examiner in the relevant class.
- 21:27SPEAKER_02: Whichever route you you choose, the authorised examiner or instructor makes an entry in the section 12 certificate of the revalidation page of your licence and makes the appropriate CA paperwork.
- 21:40SPEAKER_02: Uh the rating will normally be within for two years, valid for two years, until the end of the appropriate calendar months.
- 21:46SPEAKER_04: So that's what you have to do from the first of October.
- 21:49SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 21:50SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 21:50SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm a bit confused though.
- 21:51SPEAKER_03: So if I get the endorsement sorted now, does that uh does that mean I'm immediately flying under the new system?
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: No, and that's an easily missed point.
- 21:59SPEAKER_02: Even if you're Licences endorsed early, you still have to comply with the existing Laple rolling requ recency requirements right up to the 30th of September.
- 22:09SPEAKER_02: However, the new rating, you just said because the new rating does not become effective until the first of October.
- 22:15SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 22:16SPEAKER_02: So you can get that done, but it's not effective until the first of October.
- 22:20SPEAKER_02: Up till then you've got to continue with the Laple rolling.
- 22:23SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 22:23SPEAKER_04: So the important bit about getting it done is the fact that you need that endorsement in section 12 on your licence.
- 22:31SPEAKER_04: You may have everything, you may meet all the requirements, but if that doesn't get signed off by an examiner or instructor, as previously mentioned, then it's as if it didn't happen.
- 22:40SPEAKER_04: So you absolutely need to do it done.
- 22:42SPEAKER_04: So probably the best bit of advice we can give anybody throughout the whole podcast, probably throughout the whole history of the flyer itself, is don't leave it to the last moment.
- 22:52SPEAKER_04: So if your license hasn't been properly endorsed by the year deadline, then additional act uh actions will be necessary and you'll have to take a proficiency check with an examiner, and that's going to cost you money, time, etc.
- 23:05SPEAKER_04: So don't leave that until the last minute.
- 23:09SPEAKER_03: Okay, and let's imagine so we get to October the 1st.
- 23:12SPEAKER_03: Uh I've got my SEP rating properly entered on my license.
- 23:16SPEAKER_03: Uh, what changes for me?
- 23:17SPEAKER_02: Well, the biggest practical difference is that you've now got a class rating with a recorded expiry date.
- 23:22SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 23:22SPEAKER_02: Uh the two main ways to revalidate it before that date arrives.
- 23:26SPEAKER_02: Uh you can take a proficiency check with an examiner during the three months before the rating expires, um, or you can revalidate by experience.
- 23:34SPEAKER_04: And so remind us again, what are the what are the experience requirements?
- 23:38SPEAKER_02: During the ratings validity period, so when it's still valid, you need 12 hours in the relevant classes, class, including six hours during the 12 months before expiry.
- 23:49SPEAKER_02: You also need six hours as pilot in command, twelve takeoffs and landings, and at least one hour of refresher training.
- 23:56SPEAKER_03: Uh what if I've got both an SCP land and a TMG rating?
- 24:01SPEAKER_02: There's some flexibility here.
- 24:03SPEAKER_02: Uh pilots holding both can complete the experience in either class or at a combination of the two to revalidate both.
- 24:10SPEAKER_02: But different provisions apply to combinations of land and sea ratings.
- 24:14SPEAKER_02: So if that's you, get specific of advice uh assuming the same rules apply.
- 24:19SPEAKER_04: So hopefully most people are flying fairly regularly throughout that two-year period, and most people are going to be able to go down the experience route.
- 24:27SPEAKER_04: So that still means that to do they need to do an hour's refresher training.
- 24:31SPEAKER_04: So tell us talk talk a bit more about that hour.
- 24:33SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 24:33SPEAKER_02: So normally it'd be a single flight lasting one hour.
- 24:36SPEAKER_02: There is some flexibility in this.
- 24:37SPEAKER_02: If the weather, aircraft availability, or another operational limitation uh makes a single one-hour flight impractical, it can be split over two flights, as long as the instruction totals at least one hour.
- 24:49SPEAKER_03: Okay, that's good to know.
- 24:50SPEAKER_03: Uh does it have to be done through a flying school, though?
- 24:53SPEAKER_02: Uh no, it doesn't.
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: It has to doesn't have to be uh conducted through an approved training organisation, that's an ATO, or a declared training organisation, that's a DTO.
- 25:02SPEAKER_02: Uh it can be arranged directly between the pilot and an instructor.
- 25:06SPEAKER_02: Uh, the flight should be recorded in your logbook as pilot under training, with the instructor's name in the pilot in command column and the flight time in the dual column.
- 25:15SPEAKER_02: The instructor should sign and endorse the entry.
- 25:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 25:19SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 25:20SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 25:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 25:20SPEAKER_04: So there's another significant change once we move to ratings with the expiry date, which is we really don't want to let it expire without getting everything done, without getting it signed off.
- 25:29SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 25:30SPEAKER_03: No, because basically an expired rating can't just be revalidated, can it?
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: Correct.
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: Once it's expired, it has to be renewed.
- 25:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 25:38SPEAKER_02: Uh that normally means an assessment to determine whether refresher training is required, uh, completing any training that's identified, and then passing a proficiency check with an examiner.
- 25:49SPEAKER_02: For a non-high performance SEP or TNG rating that's been expired for no more than three years, the assessment or training may be carried out with an ATO, a DTO, or with an appropriately qualified instructor.
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: However, if it's been expired for more than three years, then the assessment and the training must be conducted out conducted through an ATO or a DTO.
- 26:13SPEAKER_03: And if I'm doing a proficiency check, what does that involve?
- 26:16SPEAKER_02: It's essentially checking the main skills you need to operate the aircraft safely.
- 26:20SPEAKER_02: It's a bit like a mini skills test, if you like.
- 26:23SPEAKER_02: So we're talking about pre-flight planning and aircraft preparation, ground operations, take off and department procedures, general handling, stalls and recoveries, navigation, arrival and landing procedures, plus simulated abnormal or emergency situations.
- 26:38SPEAKER_02: Exactly what you do will depend on the aircraft class and conditions on the day.
- 26:43SPEAKER_04: So finishing with the practical bit, what what do what do people need to do right now?
- 26:48SPEAKER_04: Well, not right now because you're watching this, but what do people need to do when they finish watching this?
- 26:52SPEAKER_02: First, get your license and log book out, check which class privileges appear in section 12 of your licence.
- 26:59SPEAKER_02: Then check your rolling 24 hour 24 month recency and remember that you need to keep meeting those requirements until the 30th of September.
- 27:09SPEAKER_02: Next, speak to an appropriately authorised examiner or instructor in good time about transitioning your class rating.
- 27:17SPEAKER_02: Make sure the new rating and its expiry date are entered correctly in the Section 12 certificate or revalidation page.
- 27:27SPEAKER_02: And after the first of October, start treating that expiry date as something you need to actively manage.
- 27:34SPEAKER_03: So after the 1st of October, this shouldn't uh for any active Laple holders, this shouldn't be actually be too difficult.
- 27:42SPEAKER_03: No.
- 27:43SPEAKER_04: I mean effectively it's aligning the the experience requirements across all of the licence types, isn't it?
- 27:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because it is it is it has been a bit confusing.
- 27:52SPEAKER_02: So no, if you're flying regularly, then you you've probably got the experience you require already.
- 27:57SPEAKER_02: The important thing is getting your paperwork and endorsement sorted rather than assuming it will happen automatically.
- 28:03SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 28:03SPEAKER_04: Between now and then, and certainly after October the 1st, it's a bad time to discover that you haven't done it and you're sitting there strapped in, ready to go.
- 28:10SPEAKER_04: You're having that Indian summer, everything's lovely again.
- 28:12SPEAKER_04: Remember that freshly cut grass, we've still got some of that going on.
- 28:16SPEAKER_04: Um and then it's away.
- 28:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah, particularly if you told your passenger just how easy a aviation is.
- 28:21SPEAKER_04: It's so simple.
- 28:22SPEAKER_04: Yes, quite a bit.
- 28:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, actually, flying is the simple bit, isn't it, really?
- 28:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 28:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 28:26SPEAKER_03: There's no there's no question.
- 28:27SPEAKER_03: Sometimes the um the world of aviation licensing can be a bit opaque.
- 28:32SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 28:32SPEAKER_04: So check your license, check your logbook, check that you meet all the requirements.
- 28:36SPEAKER_04: Don't forget that date, the 30th and the first.
- 28:39SPEAKER_04: Um so until the 30th, you're going on the rolling validity, which is what you should have been doing ever since you've had the lapple.
- 28:45SPEAKER_04: And then from the first, you'll be going from the fixed date, but you need to get the fixed date sorted before then, because if you don't, you're gonna be in a little world of pain where you need to go and do effectively a little mini GFT skills test, whatever it's called these days.
- 28:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 28:59SPEAKER_02: But don't you know I've done one of those before.
- 29:01SPEAKER_04: It's not don't fear it.
- 29:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 29:03SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 29:04SPEAKER_04: No, you're not gonna give up flying, you know, don't give up flying just because you haven't done it, but it'd be better to get it sorted now.
- 29:09SPEAKER_04: Yep, absolutely.
- 29:09SPEAKER_04: It just saves you time and money if you get everything.
- 29:12SPEAKER_04: The C A the CA having gone, you know, spent a little while not talking about this a great deal, and then I think a whole load of people went, Oh, you need to explain this.
- 29:20SPEAKER_04: And they they've sent emails out.
- 29:22SPEAKER_04: There's another Skywise that came out recently.
- 29:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 29:25SPEAKER_04: So there's plenty of information out there, but you know, the thing is you need to act now and get the right information.
- 29:30SPEAKER_02: And if you didn't get all this, then we'll we'll be putting it on the website very soon.
- 29:34SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 29:35SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 29:36SPEAKER_02: Fantastic.
- 29:39SPEAKER_04: We promised it earlier and now we're delivering.
- 29:42SPEAKER_04: It must be time for.
- 29:52SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 29:52SPEAKER_03: Um the new season means the return of a fly of the Flyer viewers' favourite.
- 29:58SPEAKER_03: It's Fantasy Hangar, where we pick dream airplanes to satisfy a particular need.
- 30:03SPEAKER_03: Uh and to kick things off, we thought because Flyer Club members have four fabulous free landings to use in September, uh, we would pick perfect airplanes to make that tour of those four airfields in.
- 30:16SPEAKER_03: Uh, just to remind you, those four uh four free landings are Old Warden, 789 metre runway there, Barton, 640 metre runway there, Cromer, 660 metres, and Stravan 530 metres.
- 30:33SPEAKER_03: Just putting the the lengths in there just in case someone's picked a Learjet.
- 30:39SPEAKER_03: They are old grass.
- 30:41SPEAKER_03: So who's first?
- 30:42SPEAKER_03: Ian.
- 30:43SPEAKER_04: Am I first?
- 30:44SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 30:44SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 30:45SPEAKER_04: So when I see a grass there field, particularly one that's not a thousand metres long, I think that quintessential summer evening.
- 30:52SPEAKER_04: I think there's calm winds, it's warm, it's not too scorchio like it is here.
- 30:57SPEAKER_04: Someone's been out and cut the grass, so you've got that smell of freshly cut grass.
- 31:01SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 31:02SPEAKER_04: Someone in the back is clinking some glasses with some non-alcoholic drinks or a coffee or a cup of tea.
- 31:07SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 31:08SPEAKER_04: The birds are chirping.
- 31:09SPEAKER_04: It's just absolutely lovable.
- 31:10SPEAKER_04: It's it's it's fantastic.
- 31:12SPEAKER_04: What better aircraft to fly to all of those places in those conditions than the Miles Falcon major?
- 31:20SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 31:21SPEAKER_04: An absolutely stunning aircraft designed by Miles.
- 31:25SPEAKER_04: Built this one was built by Phillips and Paris Aviation at Reading Aerodrome in 1936.
- 31:30SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's a three-straight, four-place, low-wing.
- 31:34SPEAKER_04: It's the it's their first cabin, it's Miles' first cabin aircraft.
- 31:37SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 31:38SPEAKER_04: Um, absolutely beautiful.
- 31:39SPEAKER_04: This one, as you may have guessed, because it's got major in the name, was powered by the gypsy major, so 35 horse, I think, four-cylinder.
- 31:47SPEAKER_03: And given a most fantastic pair of trousers.
- 31:50SPEAKER_04: Given a most fantastic it's got a it's got trousered undercarriage, very big pantaloons things going on there.
- 31:56SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 31:57SPEAKER_04: It's got one of those kind of forward.
- 32:00SPEAKER_04: The forward raked windscreen, which apparently gives it three or four miles an hour.
- 32:05SPEAKER_04: I've I've read this.
- 32:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 32:06SPEAKER_04: I've read it as well.
- 32:07SPEAKER_04: I'm not sure how true it is, but I'll take it.
- 32:09SPEAKER_04: But it's certainly it's it's it's it's a very quintessentially British styling device.
- 32:14SPEAKER_04: It's fantastic.
- 32:15SPEAKER_04: This this there are unfortunately there are only three of those aircraft left in the world flying at least.
- 32:19SPEAKER_04: There's the one in the UK, which is owned by shipping and airlines at Biggin Hill.
- 32:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 32:23SPEAKER_04: There's one in Australia, and there's one in Spain, and neither none of them appear to be for sale, nor do I probably have the amount of money I would need.
- 32:30SPEAKER_04: But it's a fantasy.
- 32:32SPEAKER_04: It's a fantasy.
- 32:32SPEAKER_04: It's it's just such a gorgeous, gorgeous airplane.
- 32:35SPEAKER_04: This one's passed through a few hands over the years, a few famous hands.
- 32:38SPEAKER_04: Doug Bianchi, personal plane services at Wickham.
- 32:41SPEAKER_04: He he, I believe, he converted it from a tail skid to a tail wheel.
- 32:45SPEAKER_04: Okay, amongst other things.
- 32:46SPEAKER_04: Um it was it was used quite a lot.
- 32:48SPEAKER_04: It was an air taxi, it took place in an air race to Canada to Canada?
- 32:52SPEAKER_04: Where did that come from?
- 32:53SPEAKER_04: Australia.
- 32:53SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 32:54SPEAKER_04: Um and interestingly, I think it took something like 32 days to get to Australia, which is you know, fair old crack.
- 32:58SPEAKER_04: But they came back in a sort of record-breaking seven days and nineteen hours, which is a bit of a wiggler, including one, including one leg that was 1800 miles.
- 33:07SPEAKER_04: I mean, that that's gonna take a bit of a I'm surprised the gypsy major having had an airplane with a gypsy major point, I'm surprised they had enough oil for that long, to be perfectly honest with you.
- 33:16SPEAKER_03: But that I that is a strong, that's a strong start for Fancy Hang.
- 33:19SPEAKER_03: I think it's the winner.
- 33:20SPEAKER_04: That is a winner.
- 33:21SPEAKER_04: That's a that's you don't need to listen, there aren't that there are no more.
- 33:24SPEAKER_03: That's an aeroplane that not only is it it looks like it's a joy to fly and be in the that when you've parked it and you walk away, you turn around and you look at that and you just you just have a gentle sigh of of satisfaction.
- 33:38SPEAKER_04: It's an airplane that makes you not want to walk away.
- 33:40SPEAKER_04: Yes it's one of those that you know if if I could have my fantasy house, you would have a small hangar with lots of glass windows where you look down.
- 33:47SPEAKER_04: Just look on your file, and then you wouldn't have to walk away from it for too long.
- 33:50SPEAKER_04: You could just like pop upstairs, have a look at it, go down polish from time to time a bit of a clean.
- 33:58SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 33:58SPEAKER_04: That that's and sorry, last thing.
- 34:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah, getting back to that kind of iconic grass airfield kind of summer evening feeling.
- 34:05SPEAKER_04: I think the Gypsy Major actually sounds really nice as an engine as well.
- 34:09SPEAKER_04: Um I have to say, if I'm gonna be completely honest, it's probably slightly underpowered for the aircraft itself, and there were some later versions with a sort of 600 to 200 horsepower.
- 34:18SPEAKER_04: Just don't load it up too much.
- 34:20SPEAKER_03: But just don't yeah, don't load it up.
- 34:21SPEAKER_03: I'm sure it'll work for all those airfields.
- 34:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 34:23SPEAKER_03: So absolutely and it'll look especially fabulous when you park it at Shuttleworth.
- 34:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they probably probably you go for a cup of tea, you come back, it'll be gone.
- 34:32SPEAKER_04: You found they've pushed it inside.
- 34:33SPEAKER_04: Pushed it into it.
- 34:34SPEAKER_04: Figured it was part of their collection.
- 34:36SPEAKER_04: Collection.
- 34:36SPEAKER_03: That's the trouble.
- 34:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 34:37SPEAKER_03: So beautiful it is.
- 34:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 34:39SPEAKER_03: So how do you follow beauty?
- 34:41SPEAKER_03: You must have an amazing choice.
- 34:43SPEAKER_02: I have got an amazing choice.
- 34:45SPEAKER_02: And I've it I think your aircraft, Ian, is a is a lovely-looking airplane, but it it's a it's part of a collection.
- 34:50SPEAKER_02: It needs to stay in there, being polished.
- 34:52SPEAKER_02: It's a called fantasy hangout.
- 34:54SPEAKER_04: It's not called fantasy stick it in some.
- 34:57SPEAKER_02: I've gone for an airplane which is really usable.
- 34:59SPEAKER_02: It's something you can get in and fly and fight, all of those four air filters in one day, should you want to, and get in with easy easy peasy.
- 35:07SPEAKER_02: It's uh that the Bristel B8M.
- 35:11SPEAKER_02: Now you may remember the B8 is the high-wing Bristel, and they originally launched it as a microlight.
- 35:16SPEAKER_02: I think they may have had a bit of trouble meeting the weight limit, but anyway, now because of Mosaic, which is these new regs industry in uh in America, um they get they're it's now weighing 800 kilograms and it's got a Rotex 916 engine up front, 161 horsepower, 135 horsepower in yours, I believe.
- 35:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 35:35SPEAKER_04: Beautifully sounding 135 horsepower.
- 35:37SPEAKER_02: I reckon a Rotex 916 at Full Chat is going to be pretty damn good as well.
- 35:41SPEAKER_02: Anyway, so the B8 means it's you know it's it can fly in anywhere.
- 35:46SPEAKER_02: Being a high wing, it's a bit easier for people like me to get in and out of.
- 35:50SPEAKER_03: Do you think they've named it the B8 M for mo M for mobility, maybe?
- 35:57SPEAKER_02: This is a fast little aeroplane.
- 35:58SPEAKER_02: This is gonna be it's just gonna be good mobility.
- 36:01SPEAKER_02: It's reckoned to have a cruise of 147 knots.
- 36:04SPEAKER_02: I think that may have come from the same copywriters as well.
- 36:07SPEAKER_02: Flight design copywriter now works for Bristol.
- 36:10SPEAKER_02: But the uh it's got a flop, you know, you could imagine this thing is gonna be weighing 800 kilograms max takeoff weight.
- 36:16SPEAKER_02: It's gonna have this 160 horsepower engine up front.
- 36:19SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be it's gonna have a good climb rate.
- 36:22SPEAKER_02: They say it's gonna be 1,500 feet per minute climb rate of max weight.
- 36:26SPEAKER_02: So uh I think that's pretty good.
- 36:28SPEAKER_02: No, I th I really like the uh the B8.
- 36:30SPEAKER_02: Uh it just looks like a modern take on a luscom, if you like.
- 36:35SPEAKER_03: Oh I did that.
- 36:36SPEAKER_03: You should have gone to the backstage.
- 36:39SPEAKER_03: Dave was doing really well.
- 36:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 36:41SPEAKER_03: And then we had this enormous beep where it's like it's a modern take on a luscom.
- 36:47SPEAKER_03: It's like, whoa! It's got a high wing.
- 36:50SPEAKER_04: Yes, yeah.
- 36:51SPEAKER_03: And and that's where it stops.
- 36:52SPEAKER_04: It was too heavy for a micro light, so it should really be called the Bristol Ladi.
- 36:57SPEAKER_03: Harsh.
- 36:57SPEAKER_03: I mean, I d don't get me wrong, that is a nice I since they introduced it, that is a nice looking modern sport airplane.
- 37:04SPEAKER_03: I think if you take that to Old Warden, th that that yes, you'll be able to enjoy the museum, but they'll say, uh, can you just park it right down the corner around there and then put a paper bag put a paper bag over it?
- 37:18SPEAKER_02: No, no, no.
- 37:19SPEAKER_02: Oh boy.
- 37:20SPEAKER_02: They they appreciate engineering capabilities there, don't they?
- 37:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but it's not your mobility, Bristol.
- 37:27SPEAKER_04: So it'd be like taking No, I can't go there because I'll get sued.
- 37:32SPEAKER_03: And that just leaves me.
- 37:34SPEAKER_03: Um I did I pondered this and then thought, what do I really fancy to do this particular job?
- 37:40SPEAKER_03: And I came up with the fabulous Waco SRE.
- 37:44SPEAKER_03: And I know people are going, the Waco what?
- 37:47SPEAKER_03: The SRE, because you probably won't know this, but WACO, it was Waco's take on luxury personal aircraft, and it was their answer to the beach stagger wing.
- 37:58SPEAKER_03: Uh now it had stagger, but not in the same way as the stagger as the as the stagger wing.
- 38:03SPEAKER_03: It was um uh front wing was forwards at the rear wing, and it was a sesquipane where the bottom wing was a lot smaller than the top.
- 38:12SPEAKER_03: Um, a full four-seater, it had the best performance of any of the Wacos.
- 38:17SPEAKER_03: Uh, first flown in 1939, ply-covered wing, streamlined flying wires, it was fast.
- 38:23SPEAKER_03: Uh 450 horsepower, Pratt Whitney R985, 170-not cruise.
- 38:28SPEAKER_04: Fast and thirsty.
- 38:30SPEAKER_03: Nah, 50-knot stall, so perfect for strips, 900 mile range.
- 38:35SPEAKER_03: So you could, this is this is a classy, fast, comfortable way to go and tour all these aeroplanes.
- 38:41SPEAKER_03: And then when you turn up at Shuttleworth, you go, you get a pair of binoculars out and went where have they parked Dave's aeroplane?
- 38:47SPEAKER_03: And then you realise that your beautiful Waco is parked next to Ian's beautiful miles, right in the right, you know, right.
- 38:54SPEAKER_04: I'm not sure you should have compared it with the staggering.
- 38:56SPEAKER_04: I kind of think more like a Throxton jackaroo.
- 39:00SPEAKER_03: I think that is that is completely, completely wild comparison.
- 39:05SPEAKER_03: It it is not.
- 39:06SPEAKER_04: You're you're gonna turn up at Old Warden like a like wearing a MAGA hat going, Out of the way, out of the way, everyone! I'm a rabbin, I'm a rabbin.
- 39:16SPEAKER_03: This is a class this is a a a a statement.
- 39:19SPEAKER_03: See my big engine?
- 39:20SPEAKER_03: No.
- 39:21SPEAKER_03: No, no.
- 39:22SPEAKER_02: Don't a pair of you have to take a take a uh an array of drip oil drip trays with you everywhere you go.
- 39:27SPEAKER_03: I maybe.
- 39:28SPEAKER_03: But it's grass.
- 39:30SPEAKER_03: You know, it's not gonna it's not gonna not gonna leave a lasting stain.
- 39:34SPEAKER_04: I like to I mean Ed quite likes an oil eat because it gives him uh It gives me something to think about.
- 39:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 39:41SPEAKER_03: Uh I know I know radials uh but but the Waco SRE is just that's a beautiful aeroplane.
- 39:46SPEAKER_03: And it is it's I learned about it because I was talking to someone about a stagger wing once and they went, you everyone gets obsessed with stagger wings, but the the thinking man staggering is the SRE because it's much less complex, just as fast, uh, and apparently much nicer to fly.
- 40:04SPEAKER_02: What are you two gonna do when you turn up at Strathaven and it's blowing a hoolie from the from uh from saying across the runway?
- 40:11SPEAKER_02: Across the runway.
- 40:12SPEAKER_03: Um well you all have landed perfectly fine in your in your training wheel aeroplane.
- 40:16SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 40:18SPEAKER_03: Um I'll be saying to Ian, you go first.
- 40:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, okay, yeah.
- 40:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 40:25SPEAKER_03: Um but yeah, so um uh yeah, do you agree?
- 40:28SPEAKER_03: I know one, who's your fantasy hanger pick?
- 40:31SPEAKER_03: Uh tell us in the comments.
- 40:33SPEAKER_03: Uh, do you vote Ian with his Miles Miles Falcon major?
- 40:37SPEAKER_03: Do you vote Dave with his B8 uh Bristol B8 mobility or me with the fabulous Waco SRE?
- 40:44SPEAKER_03: Or maybe you've got your own choice where you go, none of those three are any good at all.
- 40:47SPEAKER_03: I pick this.
- 40:48SPEAKER_03: Tell us in the comments.
- 40:51SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 40:52SPEAKER_04: Well, thank you very much.
- 40:53SPEAKER_04: It's good to take the first win.
- 40:55SPEAKER_04: I'm back after the summer.
- 40:57SPEAKER_03: We'll come back and review the comments, uh, but I yeah, I'm I'm feeling like it might be an Ed Wins to kick us off with.
- 41:04SPEAKER_03: I think it might be a Dave WTF.
- 41:09SPEAKER_04: I think you could be right at that.
- 41:10SPEAKER_04: Right, okay.
- 41:11SPEAKER_04: Let us know.
- 41:12SPEAKER_04: Let us know.
- 41:15SPEAKER_03: So, uh at the top of the show, we said we'd deliver you some weather.
- 41:19SPEAKER_03: Now it's time for the weather.
- 41:20SPEAKER_03: Shall we see what Simon has in store for us?
- 41:23SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 41:23SPEAKER_01: Hi everyone, Simon Keeling here with your flying weather outlook for the weekend and week ahead, brought to you exclusively by Flyer in association with weatherschool.co.uk.
- 41:34SPEAKER_01: Thanks again for watching.
- 41:35SPEAKER_01: Now for Friday, Cold Front clearing its way south-eastwards.
- 41:38SPEAKER_01: This gets rid of most of the mist and murk.
- 41:41SPEAKER_01: So actually, for much of England and Wales, it looks like it is going to be a decent day.
- 41:44SPEAKER_01: Remnants of the front hanging around across southern parts of England making for marginal conditions here.
- 41:49SPEAKER_01: But behind the cloud base is improved two to four thousand feet tops at around 10 to 12,000 feet.
- 41:56SPEAKER_01: Some hefty showers moving southeastwards through Scotland and Northern Ireland associated with the included front you see there.
- 42:03SPEAKER_01: Marginal to non-VFR along that front, one to three thousand feet, fifteen to twenty thousand foot tops, and showers following in behind and becoming fairly breezy as well.
- 42:13SPEAKER_01: Now, on Saturday, high pressure actually builds in.
- 42:17SPEAKER_01: So some mist and some milk Saturday morning could be some drizzle affecting western coast of Scotland throughout much of the day.
- 42:23SPEAKER_01: So generally non-verrable here, bases less than a thousand feet, but for others it gradually improves, it becomes a better day.
- 42:31SPEAKER_01: Always the chance of some low cloud, some drizzle affecting western Wales, southwestern coast of England.
- 42:36SPEAKER_01: But generally, we're looking at two to four thousand foot bases opposite about eight and a thousand feet.
- 42:42SPEAKER_01: So not bad.
- 42:45SPEAKER_01: Sunday sees the high drifting eastwards, it doesn't hang around very long.
- 42:49SPEAKER_01: Plenty of cloud across Scotland, some drizzle affecting these western coasts and hills, marginal to non-verh because of that low cloud and drizzle.
- 42:58SPEAKER_01: The base is anywhere between a thousand and three thousand feet, or ten to twelve thousand feet.
- 43:04SPEAKER_01: But do check the forecast up very carefully because I think particularly western Scotland, northwest in England, northern and western part of Wales, southwest England, much of the central and western part of the channel could be clouded up with low cloud and mist and murk.
- 43:18SPEAKER_01: So check the forecast carefully.
- 43:20SPEAKER_01: Central and eastern areas look like they will see an improvement of a sort of two to four thousand foot bases or ten thousand foot toppers.
- 43:27SPEAKER_01: But even here, some low cloud around as well.
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: Like I say, treat that one cautiously.
- 43:32SPEAKER_01: Okay, uh, whatever you're doing, have a safe and an enjoyable uh weekend.
- 43:37SPEAKER_01: Don't forget to get yourself booked onto Aviation Weather School Part 1 if you've not already been.
- 43:42SPEAKER_01: And uh we'll be seeing you live online on the consecutive Tuesday evenings of the 15th and 22nd of September.
- 43:50SPEAKER_01: Thanks again for watching, keep the sun shining and bye for now.
- 43:53SPEAKER_03: A mixed bag, I think, is gonna be my as we'll find out in the in the events, you know, the LA rally coming up.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: I think it's gonna be okay.
- 44:02SPEAKER_02: Yep, yep.
- 44:02SPEAKER_02: Well, the LAA rally is the big week big event of the weekend.
- 44:06SPEAKER_02: Starts on Friday.
- 44:07SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 44:07SPEAKER_02: Goes right through to Sunday at Leicester Airport.
- 44:10SPEAKER_02: Um Can you give us any background to you know what's gonna be at the LA rally?
- 44:15SPEAKER_03: There will be aeroplanes.
- 44:16SPEAKER_03: Uh lots of them.
- 44:18SPEAKER_03: Um uh yeah, so obviously three days, uh a big exhibition area, um LAA celebrating 80 years, their 80th anniversary, and there's a big array of aeroplanes across those 80 years, all coming to represent all of the LAA's history.
- 44:33SPEAKER_03: So um yeah, it should be great.
- 44:35SPEAKER_03: You're gonna be there.
- 44:35SPEAKER_04: Um I'll be I've got a slot booked for Friday morning at the moment.
- 44:38SPEAKER_04: That's kind of looking there.
- 44:40SPEAKER_03: We'll be there making a video for Flyer on Friday.
- 44:42SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna be there um all the days through till Sunday, so do come and say hello.
- 44:47SPEAKER_03: Um yeah.
- 44:49SPEAKER_03: Rally.
- 44:49SPEAKER_03: Good.
- 44:50SPEAKER_03: I'm look I think I'm looking forward to it as long as the weather holds out, really.
- 44:53SPEAKER_03: I think it's gonna be I think Saturday looks like it might be the best day for it.
- 44:57SPEAKER_03: And Sunday should be good too.
- 44:59SPEAKER_02: So also in Leicestershire, slightly confusingly, there's the Victory Show, which is an air show.
- 45:05SPEAKER_02: So a place called Foxlands Farm, which is southeast of Leicester.
- 45:08SPEAKER_02: That's over the three days as well.
- 45:10SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 45:10SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 45:11SPEAKER_03: Watch out for the rat for that if you're flying into the rally, because nearby.
- 45:14SPEAKER_03: Yep, that's very true.
- 45:15SPEAKER_03: Excuse me.
- 45:16SPEAKER_02: Miles away, though, over the same period, 4th to the 6th, uh Friday to Saturday, Friday to Sunday.
- 45:21SPEAKER_02: There's the ordinary flying in the Channel Islands.
- 45:24SPEAKER_02: Um, the 4th to the 5th, which is Saturday, uh Friday and Saturday, there's the air show.
- 45:31SPEAKER_02: Air show as in AYR.
- 45:33SPEAKER_02: At air.
- 45:33SPEAKER_02: At air, air show in uh Scotland, Vest of the Flight.
- 45:37SPEAKER_02: Saturday, the 5th of September, there's a breakfast flying at Galway Airport, which sounds really nice, actually.
- 45:42SPEAKER_02: Going to flying into Galway.
- 45:44SPEAKER_03: Always lovely place.
- 45:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, always a lovely place.
- 45:46SPEAKER_02: And over the weekend, Saturday and Sunday, is a micro light flying at North Coast.
- 45:50SPEAKER_04: Great.
- 45:51SPEAKER_04: Thank you very much.
- 45:52SPEAKER_04: Right, that just leaves us to say thank you very much, team.
