- 0:00Our mental process tends to take us to extremes.
- 0:04We want simple answers without a lot of nuance.
- 0:09Thus, when we seek spiritual liberation, we tend to take the
- 0:13concept of renunciation or rejection to mean that we
- 0:18abandoned the external life to focus on our spiritual pursuits.
- 0:24If our vital nature does not cooperate with this, we try to
- 0:27suppress it, and if that does not succeed, we even try to
- 0:32punish or torture our physical or vital being or create a sense
- 0:37of anguish in our emotional or mental being.
- 0:41There arises A considerable struggle as the human nature
- 0:45tries to achieve its fulfillment, while our spiritual
- 0:48seeking tries to cast it aside or even destroy it.
- 0:54Sriorobindo takes a different approach to the matter.
- 0:57The rejection needed is not a stifling of the human being in
- 1:02all its parts, but rather a rejection of the deformations,
- 1:07distortions, or bad habits developed across many millennia
- 1:12of evolutionary history in order to create a harmonious,
- 1:17energetic and unified focus for the life, guided and directed by
- 1:22the psychic being and the spiritual consciousness in
- 1:27harmony with the divine manifestation of which we are
- 1:30apart. Adjusting and changing these
- 1:34deeply embedded drives, cravings, desires, and habits of
- 1:39reaction is not an easy task, nor one that is accomplished
- 1:44quickly. Rather than cutting the knot of
- 1:47human nature, the seeker is asked to untie the knot and
- 1:52bring the nature in line with the deeper aspiration.
- 1:56In his book The Mother, Sri Aurobindo describes the nature
- 2:01of the rejection needed to accomplish the objective of
- 2:05becoming a conscious instrument of the divine.
- 2:09Quote. Rejection of the movements of
- 2:12the lower nature. Rejection of the mind's ideas,
- 2:16opinions, preferences, habits, constructions, so that the true
- 2:21knowledge may find free form in a silent mind.
- 2:25Rejection of the vital nature's desires, demands, cravings,
- 2:30sensations, passions, selfishness, pride, arrogance,
- 2:35lust, greed, jealousy, envy, hostility to the truth, so that
- 2:41the true power and joy may pour from above into a calm, large,
- 2:47strong and consecrated vital being.
- 2:50Rejection of the physical nature.
- 2:52Stupidity, doubt, disbelief, obscurity, obstinacy, pettiness,
- 3:00laziness, unwillingness to change Thomas, so that the true
- 3:05stability of light, power Ananda may establish itself in a body
- 3:11growing always more divine. End Quote.
- 3:17It is not easy. We have all, at one time or
- 3:21another, tried to change an embedded habit.
- 3:24Whether we have tried to lose weight through a diet, change
- 3:28our eating preferences, develop a consistent exercise regimen,
- 3:33undertake a serious course of study or personal development.
- 3:37Or try to avoid the reactions that occur in various
- 3:41circumstances that bring us to an instant expression of anger,
- 3:46frustration, or fear, Or even change a habit of jumping to
- 3:50conclusions. We're trying to judge others,
- 3:54pressuring others to adopt one's own ideologies or convictions,
- 3:59arguing. We're gossiping about others.
- 4:03When we undertake to consciously bring about a change in some
- 4:07area, we find that the work requires observation, patience,
- 4:13and persistent efforts to 1st withdraw any positive sanction
- 4:18for that response. And then to begin to guide the
- 4:23nature to alternatives that more closely align with our
- 4:27aspiration, Sriorwindo writes Quote.
- 4:33Unfortunately, there is the resistance, a very obscure and
- 4:38obstinate resistance that necessitates a negative element
- 4:43in the yoga, an element of rejection of things that stand
- 4:46in the way and of pressure upon those forms that are crude and
- 4:51useless to disappear on those that are useful but imperfect or
- 4:56have been perverted to retain or to recover their true movement
- 5:01to the vital. This pressure is painful, first
- 5:05because it is obscure and does not understand, and secondly
- 5:09because there are parts of it that want to be left to their
- 5:13crude motions and not to change. That is why the intervention of
- 5:18a psychic attitude is so helpful, for the psychic has the
- 5:22happy confidence, the ready understanding and response, the
- 5:28spontaneous surrender. End Quote.
