- 0:00Hey guys, welcome back to another episode of Recovering
- 0:02Out Loud. Today I'm going to be talking to
- 0:06you about dry drunks, what it means to be a dry drunk, and
- 0:11recovery. So we're talking about two
- 0:13different things here. Yes, they are two different
- 0:15things. Being sober and being sober in
- 0:19recovery. What's the difference?
- 0:21Why should I care? How do I know which one I'm in?
- 0:24And sometimes we can waver between 2:00, but that's OK.
- 0:26I'm going to break it all down for you today.
- 0:29This is very important because a lot of people think that when
- 0:32they get sober, life is going to magically fix itself.
- 0:35And I'm going to be a better person and my family is going to
- 0:38be healed, My relationships are going to fix and everything's
- 0:41going to be great. I'm going to get that job and
- 0:42the money and everything, blah blah, blah, blah, blah blah
- 0:44blah. Not true.
- 0:46You need to work on yourself. When you get sober, you take the
- 0:49alcohol and drugs away from me. I am unmedicated, essentially.
- 0:54I am a piece of shit. I am a selfish bastard when I am
- 0:59not high or drunk. Now towards the end you could
- 1:02argue yes, I was a piece of shit while I was high and drunk.
- 1:05My defects of character come out in full force when I get sober.
- 1:08When you remove my solution, I need something else, a power
- 1:12greater than me. Something, a recovery program, a
- 1:15group of people that I can lean on, a community, a set of
- 1:19principles that I can follow and be so I can be a good person so
- 1:22I could help the next alcoholic addict.
- 1:25The key to all of this is selfless service.
- 1:28That is the secret to recovery. When I'm helping somebody else,
- 1:32I'm not thinking about me and poor me and my life and my
- 1:35problems. So we'll break it down today.
- 1:37You can be sober and still be miserable.
- 1:40That is very possible. If anything, it's almost a
- 1:43guarantee. If you're not working on
- 1:44yourself, you're not actively trying to improve yourself.
- 1:48Self improvement, self searching, self appraisal, who
- 1:53am I? You cannot be miserable and
- 1:56sober for long. Let me repeat that.
- 1:58No one can stay miserable and sober for a long time.
- 2:03You will eventually pick up. I have personal experience with
- 2:06this. If I am not working on myself,
- 2:09if I am not following a set of principles, helping others, like
- 2:12I said, I will pick up drugs and alcohol again because what's the
- 2:15point? I have no purpose, I have no
- 2:16direction, I have no. What is the point of living if I
- 2:19can't get high or drunk? I need a North Star.
- 2:22I need a guiding force. I need an inner teacher so that
- 2:26I can be comfortable in my own skin.
- 2:28I can be comfortable with here and now.
- 2:31I don't need to escape. So today we're going to break
- 2:33down what a dry drunk means. The difference between being
- 2:37sober and being in recovery. Why people relapse even after
- 2:42long stretches of abstinence. I'm a perfect example of that.
- 2:45Relapse after 7 1/2 years. Don't recommend it.
- 2:48It does get worse. It will get worse, I promise you
- 2:52that. And what real recovery actually
- 2:54looks like in day-to-day life. This is about improving the
- 2:57quality of your life so that I don't need to escape it anymore.
- 3:02I don't want to escape it anymore because my life is big.
- 3:05It's not perfect and it's not what I want all the time, but
- 3:09it's exactly what exactly what I need in recovery.
- 3:11And then I find invariably that what I needed and what I wanted
- 3:15was actually the same fucking thing all along.
- 3:17That is the true treasure here. So first, dry drunk.
- 3:23What it really means, a dry drunk is somebody that got has
- 3:26gotten sober. They've stopped using
- 3:27substances, so they've quit. They've stayed abstinent and
- 3:32they haven't changed their internal patterns that fueled
- 3:35the addiction. That's the key here.
- 3:36They're not changing how they interact in the world.
- 3:39They're still acting on anger, they're still acting on lust.
- 3:43They're still acting they're picking up other outside things
- 3:46such as food, sex, gambling to ease the pain and the trauma in
- 3:51in our lives. Essentially a dry drunk is the
- 3:54world revolves around me and my problems.
- 3:56Everything is against me and it's me versus everybody.
- 4:00I am self-centered to the core. I'm not working on being
- 4:04selfless or working on my defects of character.
- 4:06I'm just acting on every single emotion and pain that comes up.
- 4:10And guess who pays the price? Not only you, but every single
- 4:13person around you, every single person that you come into
- 4:15contact with pays the price. And then you're just in this
- 4:18constant state of disturbance. I'm always disturbed when the
- 4:22guy cuts me off in line. I don't have the ability to be
- 4:25patient when I'm not working my recovery program.
- 4:27I flip out and cause a scene and get into a fight or go to jail
- 4:30or whatever. You know how it goes.
- 4:32They're abstinent but still operating from a place of fear.
- 4:35Resentment, control. I need to control things.
- 4:39You need to follow my script. And if you don't follow my
- 4:41script, I automatically hate you.
- 4:43Now I have a resentment. I'm not telling anyone about it.
- 4:45I'm eventually going to blow up because I'm pissed off.
- 4:48I have a low level resentment following me around like a black
- 4:50cloud. So resentment, fear, control,
- 4:52ego, emotional avoidance is another one.
- 4:55You know, that's too uncomfortable.
- 4:56I don't want, I don't want to deal with that.
- 4:58I'll just push that down and then it comes up and explodes on
- 5:02your wife or husband. Some common signs of a dry
- 5:05drunk, chronic irritability or anger.
- 5:07So everything is just pissing you off.
- 5:09It's the state of disturbed. I'm just constantly restless,
- 5:12irritable and discontent and now I don't have my drinks or my
- 5:15drugs. So you're seeing the
- 5:18consequences of that. I'm acting out on that.
- 5:21I'm always irritable. So just, I'm just always
- 5:24uncomfortable. Everything's pissing me off.
- 5:28Everyone else is the problem, right?
- 5:30This victim mentality that's dry drunk, white knuckling through
- 5:33life, just getting through every day, getting to bed, not working
- 5:38on myself, just trying to get sober, trying to get through
- 5:40every day. It's a struggle.
- 5:42It's a real struggle. Being a dry drunk, not having a
- 5:45recovery program, no accountability.
- 5:47Again, everyone else is to blame except for me.
- 5:50Wasn't my fault. If only my husband or my wife or
- 5:54my friends would treat me better or call me more, I'd be happier.
- 5:58No emotional growth. So we're not learning from our
- 6:00mistakes. We're not learning from our
- 6:02emotions. We're not noticing them.
- 6:04They're just coming through. And I always say our emotions
- 6:07and thoughts come through like trains at a train station.
- 6:10You can either use them, they either have Velcro on them and
- 6:15they stick around and we're dwelling on that, or you let
- 6:17them pass by, you're acknowledging it and it's
- 6:19passing by through like trains at a train station and then
- 6:22another sign of a dry drunk still trying to control people
- 6:25outcomes and feelings. If everybody would just follow
- 6:28my script, don't you know the world would be a better place if
- 6:31everyone just listened to me and my ideas and followed my plans?
- 6:36So the key point here is the substance is removed, the
- 6:38substance is gone, but the addiction, the attic mindset is
- 6:41still running the show. Me, me, me.
- 6:45I need to get things my way now. And if I don't, you're going to
- 6:48hear about it. Think of it like this.
- 6:50You didn't remove the engine, you just took your foot off the
- 6:53gas walking around just coasting through life.
- 6:57Irritable, restless, irritable and discontent.
- 7:00Sober does not equal recovered or in recovery.
- 7:04There's a huge debate, I'm gonna go on a tangent here, a little
- 7:07sidetrack here. There's a big debate in recovery
- 7:10versus whether someone can recover or not.
- 7:12There are specific programs that say you can recover from a
- 7:16seemingly hopeless and you can recover.
- 7:20So recover I can recover from a seemingly hopeless state of mind
- 7:25and body. That's what it says is I can be
- 7:28restored to a state of usefulness.
- 7:32Really. If you look up recovered or
- 7:34recover in an old dictionary, one of the oldest definitions is
- 7:38to return. I think it's return to
- 7:40usefulness. So I'm now useful to society in
- 7:43my life, to useful to others again.
- 7:45Whereas when I'm in addiction, I am completely useless.
- 7:50I can't show up to things. I can't keep obligations, I
- 7:52can't keep promises. I can't.
- 7:54Fuck, I can't even keep my own promises.
- 7:56I promised I wouldn't drink tonight because I have that
- 7:58important engagement tomorrow. Here I am, drunk again.
- 8:00So sobriety is behavioral. I'm stopping drinking and using.
- 8:04Recovery is psychological, emotional, spiritual, and
- 8:07relational. You can be 30 days one year, 10
- 8:10years sober and still feel emotionally unsafe, disconnected
- 8:15from community, from a power, grading yourself from yourself,
- 8:19unfulfilled, stuck in old survival patterns.
- 8:23This is why you constantly hear people say, and some people
- 8:26relapse over this. Like I said, I stayed sober but
- 8:28I hated my life. I was miserable.
- 8:30This and circled back. Abstinence alone does not teach
- 8:34you how to feel emotions, how to communicate, or how to repair
- 8:38relationships. These are all skills that are
- 8:40learned in recovery from me working on myself, being honest
- 8:43about the way I'm interacting in the world.
- 8:45Oh, I was kind of a piece of shit there.
- 8:47Oh, I didn't really. I kind of blew up at my wife,
- 8:50you know, I didn't really, she probably didn't appreciate that.
- 8:53I should go and apologize. This is recovery, observing how
- 8:57I interact in the world. So what recovery actually is?
- 9:01Recovery is a change from the inside out.
- 9:05It is an inside job. You hear that a lot.
- 9:06Recovery is an inside job. Nothing out here is going to fix
- 9:12the way I'm feeling that discomfort, that unease inside
- 9:14that dis ease. It's an inside job.
- 9:17I have to work on myself, my defects of character.
- 9:19When I lie, I have to go back and say, hey, I lied there and
- 9:22tell the truth. It's not about being perfect.
- 9:24We are not Saints. We are looking for spiritual
- 9:27progress here. I am being honest about when I
- 9:30fuck up. There's a good story that I I've
- 9:32heard a speaker say once and I, I like to tell it.
- 9:35There was a, a guy that was, he lost his keys and he's out on
- 9:39his front lawn one day looking for his car keys and he's
- 9:42searching through the grass. He's he's on his hands and knees
- 9:45and his friends walk by and say, hey, man, what are you doing?
- 9:47And he invites them over to help him look for his car keys.
- 9:50He's frantically looking all over the grass until one of them
- 9:53says to him, hey, man, where were you last when you had your
- 9:56keys? And he goes, oh, I was inside
- 9:58the house. And the guy, his friends go,
- 10:01well, why the fuck are we looking out here then?
- 10:03And his response is, well, the grass is, is beautiful.
- 10:07It's nice out here. I want to be out here.
- 10:09This is a perfect analogy to I am looking outside for the
- 10:14solution. When the solution is inside the
- 10:16house, it's inside me. My keys are inside the house the
- 10:19entire time. This material I use outside
- 10:22things to change my insides. If I just get that job, I'll be
- 10:25happy. If I just get the girl, I'll be
- 10:27happy. If I just win the bet, I'll be
- 10:29happy. If I just get that house.
- 10:31I've always wanted that Porsche. I will be happy.
- 10:34Biggest lie we can tell ourselves.
- 10:36Nothing. The shine wears off of those
- 10:38things, those material things. It never lasts.
- 10:40This is where recovery comes in and replaces that I am in.
- 10:44I can be in financial trouble and and go from miserable to OK
- 10:50by not getting any money because I am changing.
- 10:52The perception is changing. I did a whole episode about
- 10:54perception, you can check it out.
- 10:56I am changing the way I look at my problems.
- 10:59I'm changing the way I look at the world.
- 11:01It's not everyone versus me anymore.
- 11:03It's I'm focused too much on money and maybe right now I'm
- 11:08not supposed to have money. Is am I OK?
- 11:11Yeah. The heat's on.
- 11:12I have a bed. I have food on the table.
- 11:14Things are pretty fucking good. I'm not using drugs today.
- 11:16I'm not lying, cheating and stealing.
- 11:18Things are pretty good. Life is good.
- 11:20Essentially we're moving from self-centered to God centered
- 11:24and don't. It's not a religious God.
- 11:25I'm moving from self-centered to community centered.
- 11:28I'm focusing on others, constant thought of others.
- 11:31I'm enhancing my spiritual life through the self sacrifice of
- 11:34service to other people. Simple.
- 11:37At the end of the day, we are recovering our true selves here.
- 11:41I'm peeling back the layers of the onion.
- 11:43I am unlearning old behaviors that I picked up in addiction
- 11:47and in childhood and over my life.
- 11:49The armor. I'm peeling down the armor and
- 11:51I'm getting to the core of the root of the problem.
- 11:53Me. I'm a pretty good person under
- 11:55here. I just need to unlearn all these
- 11:57behaviors that kept me sick for so long and still keep me sick.
- 12:00These behaviors also kept us safe.
- 12:02They were survival mechanisms. How can I be safe without
- 12:06freaking out and using anger and jealousy and judgement and fear?
- 12:10A power greater than me? Maybe community?
- 12:14A recovery program? The point of all this?
- 12:17The key is to uncover, discover and discard.
- 12:22I'm uncovering. I'm discovering.
- 12:24Oh wow, I didn't realize I do that thing when someone cuts me
- 12:27off. I get really angry in traffic
- 12:28when somebody pisses me off. Maybe I need to work on patients
- 12:32more. Maybe I need to let the guy go
- 12:33in front of me so that I can work on my patients.
- 12:36Maybe when this guy's talking and won't let me get a word in,
- 12:39I need to practice my listening skills by shutting up and
- 12:42listening. What a concept.
- 12:44In recovery, you start to notice patterns instead of reacting
- 12:47automatically. We're not walking around like a
- 12:50pinball machine pulling the trigger every time someone
- 12:52pisses us off. We're just that there's a space.
- 12:55There's always a space between circumstance.
- 12:58When thing happens to me, sad thing happens to me.
- 13:00Whatever happens outside circumstance and my reaction,
- 13:03there is always a space. Recovery makes that gap wider
- 13:07and wider over time. So I can pause.
- 13:09Hey, maybe I shouldn't yell at this guy right now.
- 13:12Hey, maybe I shouldn't steal from the grocery store.
- 13:15Maybe I should do something else instead.
- 13:18Maybe there's another way to approach this problem.
- 13:20Let me ask for help. There's a level of humility
- 13:23here, too. Another spiritual principle.
- 13:26What are the opposites of our defects of character?
- 13:28Spiritual principles? Honesty, hope, faith, humility,
- 13:31service, brotherly love, perseverance, patience, love,
- 13:37tolerance. I'm replacing those old ideas
- 13:40with spiritual principles. Instead of being defensive all
- 13:43the time, I can be humble and say, yeah you know what maybe
- 13:46I'm wrong, maybe I'm wrong. What a concept.
- 13:49Ultimately recovery is the shift from I can't drink or use drugs
- 13:542. I don't need to escape my life
- 13:56anymore. Building a new life I don't want
- 13:59to escape from. It's pretty good here if I
- 14:02notice gratitude, practice gratitude.
- 14:04All the good things I have in my life.
- 14:07Why does dry drunk lead to relapse?
- 14:10Most relapses, I would say all, but most relapses don't start
- 14:13with a drink. They start in the weeks, months,
- 14:16years leading up to that first behavior picking up.
- 14:20It starts with emotional disconnection.
- 14:23My primary purpose becomes Anthony.
- 14:26I don't serve anybody anymore. The highest, I love this.
- 14:30The highest job, the highest position we can hold in recovery
- 14:35is a servant. That is the highest you can
- 14:38graduate to. There's no graduation here.
- 14:40The highest position I can be is a servant, not a slave.
- 14:44I'm there by choice. I am serving God's will.
- 14:47I am serving others. I am doing the next right thing
- 14:50because at the end of the day, it benefits me.
- 14:53It gives me purpose, it makes me feel good about myself.
- 14:56And people tend to graduate, tend to gravitate.
- 15:01Jeez, I can't think right now. Gravitate towards that.
- 15:04And I can attract good energy. I put out good energy and I
- 15:07attract good energy back. Then things start to happen that
- 15:10are good in my life. I start to get the job that I
- 15:13need. The money comes eventually.
- 15:15It's just not in my time. Dry drunk.
- 15:18Sobriety often includes isolation.
- 15:20So I'm better on my own. I don't need those people in
- 15:22recovery. I've got this suppressed
- 15:24emotions. I'm angry, so I'm just going to
- 15:27ignore it or I'm going to take it out on somebody else.
- 15:29Unaddressed trauma. So there's a something in my
- 15:33life has happened that has caused me to pick up drugs and
- 15:36alcohol or cause me mass mass discomfort.
- 15:39I'm just going to ignore it. And resentment builds quietly in
- 15:42the background. I am hating everything.
- 15:45Remember, resentment is like drinking poison and hoping the
- 15:48other person people die. I'm the only one suffering.
- 15:51When I'm in resentment, nobody else is suffering.
- 15:53No one else is even thinking about me.
- 15:55So eventually, and this will happen to you, the thought
- 15:58appears. What is the point of staying
- 16:00sober if life feels like this? What's the point?
- 16:03I might as well using drink. For me, I always thought boredom
- 16:07was the reason I relapsed. And again, boredom is fear.
- 16:11So I was afraid that it was never going to end.
- 16:13This feeling of everything was just OK and things were OK in my
- 16:17life. Not being able to sit through
- 16:19that, acknowledge it, and just reach out for help and get
- 16:22through those times lead to relapse because I need my
- 16:25medicine eventually. I can't live miserable and sober
- 16:28for long. As I said in the beginning,
- 16:31relapse is not failure. It's information that our plan
- 16:34isn't working. There's something that needs to
- 16:36be tweaked here. I need to build a part of my
- 16:39life that I can enjoy, that I don't need to escape like I
- 16:42said. So how to move from dry drunk to
- 16:45recover? Recovering alcoholic addict.
- 16:48Some practical tools and shifts you can do to switch from
- 16:52primary purposes me to primary purposes to stay sober and help
- 16:56another alcoholic get connected. Meetings, therapy, community.
- 17:00Go for coffee with somebody, Ask.
- 17:02Go buy somebody a coffee. Ask them how they're doing.
- 17:04If you go to a meeting and see a new person, go up to them and
- 17:06ask them how they are. Get their phone number, talk to
- 17:08them, call them. Call 3 Alcoholics or addicts
- 17:12everyday and just ask them how they're doing.
- 17:14You will build friends and connections this way.
- 17:16Two, practice honesty, especially when it's
- 17:19uncomfortable. And when you lie, go back and
- 17:21say, hey, you know, I, I kind of lied there.
- 17:24This is embarrassing, but and then laugh about it.
- 17:26I, I told you a white lie there. I shouldn't have done that.
- 17:29Next is learn emotional language.
- 17:31So not just I'm fine, everything's fine.
- 17:34Angry or stressed, Get deeper, go deeper.
- 17:36What are you actually feeling in this moment?
- 17:38Meditate, think about it, feel it, allow it to sit with it.
- 17:42Don't sit in it and then stop white knuckling and start
- 17:46participating. Action, action, action.
- 17:49Find someone that's sober, ask them what they did, and then do
- 17:52what they did. Take the steps one at a time.
- 17:54Do the next right thing. And if you can't do that, do the
- 17:57next thing right. And then you do the work gently,
- 18:03consistently, imperfectly. You build a routine so that when
- 18:07you're tired and you don't want to go to that meeting, you have
- 18:10a routine, You have an obligation to be there.
- 18:11You have a service position, whatever it is, these are tools
- 18:14that actually work. All right, so here's the truth
- 18:16with all of this. Sobriety keeps you alive.
- 18:20Great everyone. Sobriety is important, but
- 18:23sobriety alone will not avail long term recovery.
- 18:26You will again, you will. You cannot be miserable and
- 18:29sober for a long time. Recovery gives you a life worth
- 18:32staying sober for. So you're building all these
- 18:35things. If you had hobbies in the past,
- 18:37like playing the guitar, going for walks, going to the gym, you
- 18:39actually enjoy these things. You're present, you're able to
- 18:42show up. Family gatherings, obligations,
- 18:45commitments. You are staying true to your
- 18:47word. That builds confidence.
- 18:49I am doing things I'm saying in my head that I'm going to do.
- 18:52So in closing, if you are sober right now and unhappy, you're
- 18:56not broken, you're not failing, you're not doing it wrong.
- 19:00Just look at some of the areas in your life and say, where can
- 19:02I be of service to other people? Where can I build life?
- 19:05Where can I find purpose? Where can I lend a helping hand?
- 19:09What are some areas that maybe I'm not so proud of about
- 19:12myself? Some actions, some
- 19:13relationships, some things I'm not taking a part accountability
- 19:18in. And how do I slowly but surely
- 19:20start to be accountable and show up and be a good person?
- 19:24I had a mentor asked me one time, what kind of man do you
- 19:28want to be? Ask yourself, what kind of man
