- 1:15we're going to get into an episode of Nick Carter. We had several
- 1:21lost episodes in between last week's show and this week's two. Actually that's not
- 1:27really several, but at any rate here now from April to twenty third,
- 1:32nineteen forty sixty. It is the case of the Little Old Ladies. It's
- 1:38another case for that most famous of all men hunters, the detective whose ability
- 1:42at solving crime is unequaled in the history of detective fiction. Nick Carter,
- 1:48that's too detective. But mister Sweet, that sort of thing is entirely out
- 2:02of my line. Yes, I suppose it is, mister Carter, But
- 2:05after all, you are our official investigator. All right, all right,
- 2:08I'll have one of my men take care of me. Now tell me again,
- 2:10what do you want me to do. One of our clients is being
- 2:14sued as a result of an automobile accident in which a woman was very severely
- 2:16injured. Our client got the name of one witness, but another witness got
- 2:21away before we could find out who he was. Now our client says he
- 2:25was a very tall, thin chat with red hair, probably in his late
- 2:29twenties. A bystander told him that he thought this man lived just a couple
- 2:34of blocks away. That's all we know about him, but his testimony is
- 2:38extremely important to us in our hundred pense of the case. We must find
- 2:42him at plants, all right, mister Sweet, we'll find him. Where
- 2:45was the collision corner a burst of avenue and second place on the north side,
- 2:49and this red haired young man lives a couple of blocks from there,
- 2:51in some unknown direction. That's what we believe, mister Carter. All right,
- 2:54all right, I'll send mister mcglennard at one. Thank you. As
- 2:58soon as we have something definite, i'll let you know. All began a
- 3:12case, the lack of which had never been encountered by Nick Carter, master
- 3:15detective. A search for a missing witness seemed like a simple routine job.
- 3:21But Nick didn't know about the two old ladies who lived in the little house
- 3:24on the edge of town. You learn all about it. In the case
- 3:29of the little old ladies. You say you don't know nobody was right here.
- 3:38No I don't. People. I'm tryumph all the jobs for a great
- 3:44detective like me, going from door to door looking for a guy who probably
- 3:49don't even exist. I never knew Nick to fall for such a dumb studt
- 3:53before, and he had to wish it on me. Do no way,
- 3:57I don't quit forty seven houses I've been to, Nobody ever seen a guy
- 4:00like I'm looking for. But they heard about every kind of fellow, but
- 4:03the kind I want. If p who is it? Please? Good morning?
- 4:09I wonder if you can tell me anything about a tall, thin young
- 4:12man about twenty six twenty eight years old, with red hair. Well,
- 4:15now, let me see. I know almost everybody in this neighborhood live here
- 4:18a great many years. If you'll come in, I'll ask my sister if
- 4:23she recalls such a person. Am I. I don't want to put you
- 4:26to no trouble, no trouble at all. We'll be glad to help you
- 4:30if we can do. Come please right of course I want to find this
- 4:35fellow, So if you you do it is? Will you come here a
- 4:41minute? Dear? What is it? Mary? Can I? Oh?
- 4:45It is? This is mister Why no McGlen man, chief, mister McGlen.
- 4:51How do you do mister McGlen, how are you? Mister McGlenn says
- 4:56he's looking for a tall, thin young man with red hair, about twenty
- 4:59six twenty eight years old. Do we know such a man? Will let
- 5:03me see there with James Bond. He used to live down the block next
- 5:10to Moses, but he moved away last year. His hair was really almost
- 5:14blonde. Dear, do you suppose he could mean water Castle? Your sister?
- 5:18He must be near at thirty five? I suppose you're right he did.
- 5:23How about the young ed Jaren lived over on the next street. Oh
- 5:28no, sister, he's short, almost as short as cousin elmer Is.
- 5:32Oh look, lady, it's awful good of you to take all this trouble
- 5:35just to help behind this young man. But I do know what trouble at
- 5:39all, mister McGlen. We just don't seem to be able to marry.
- 5:43Maybe mister McGlen would like a cigar while he's of course, I'll get him
- 5:47one. They're in the box on the table behind him. No, don't
- 5:49get off, mister mclen. I'll get it for you. I hate to
- 5:54have you doing all this formulated if you don't know just where you are just
- 6:01done, you feel on the deck of your neck, and if you don't
- 6:05stay very quiet, it will go off and you'll never find this young man
- 6:10you're not looking for, not looking for? Should I tie him up now?
- 6:15Mary Is? He did tie him up right in his chair so he
- 6:18won't have to move it all, and tucked him up so he can't move
- 6:23very well. Marry I what the road is we plan? I just want
- 6:29to find a mister mclnn. We know why you're here. You came here
- 6:34to try to track us into a confession, but we would use what for
- 6:40you now? That you've found out where we live. We'll have to go
- 6:43away. Of course, that's why we have to tie you up so you
- 6:46can't follow it. Oh, Mary, Bill isn't going to like this.
- 6:51He trusted us, and now look what has happened. We've failed him.
- 6:56I know, I can't imagine how this man found out, but I'm afraid
- 7:00Bill will never forgive us. Sister. What is the name of all Latonio
- 7:04your name's talking about? You know well enough, mister McGlenn. If you
- 7:09don't have to ask us what we've done, If you didn't know, why
- 7:13are you here? There? Now? There? He can't get out of
- 7:16that, I'm sure. Look, ladies, Carter ain't kind of like this,
- 7:21not at talk, he says, I always get things balled up,
- 7:25and now he's Do you worry, mister McGlen. He can't blame you.
- 7:30We're just too clever for you and you're mister Carter. Come, sister,
- 7:34we must pack and just what it is that all good thieves say? Oh,
- 7:41yes, we must pack and square. There you are Waldo, were
- 7:58as a bird, Thanks, Kibby, Oh can't move as stiff as aboard.
- 8:03You'll be all right in a military two I'll let you wal you say,
- 8:07these two old ladies tied you up so as to give them time to
- 8:11move out. Yeah, that's what they said, Nick. I thought I
- 8:13had the goods on him for something. I didn't know nothing about it.
- 8:16I couldn't you guess what that something was? What they said? Yeah,
- 8:18not a single guest could I give, Nick, But there is altogether two
- 8:22cagy for me. One of them said something about thieves. Said that was
- 8:26only nobody way. Nick. They forgot to ask you, how did you
- 8:30happen to find me here? That was easy. Patsy told us what roots
- 8:33you were planning to follow. We followed you. You would called up the
- 8:35house on the left, but you never got to the one on the right,
- 8:39this house being after it was a good bet that you were here.
- 8:41Nick unlocked the door, and here you were waiting for it, waiting for
- 8:46you. Andyone else could I be doing? But wait ah? You and
- 8:50you were pumped. Josh. Listen, there's something going on here that's bigger
- 8:54than the Lost Witness, and I'm gonna find out what it is. But
- 8:58what can we do? Nick Aldo doesn't know what it's all about. The
- 9:01old ladies have gone, So what do we have to go on nothing.
- 9:05I've gotta find something, and the best place to start looking is right here
- 9:07in this house. Search every room thoroughly. Nope, that's the thing.
- 9:11I'll get busy both of you. And all you found was that burned paper.
- 9:26That's all passing, And what good that is? I'm going if I
- 9:28can see when a piece of paper is burned as bad as that? Why
- 9:33so you can't even see if it had write none it or not? They
- 9:35give up. Oh that's where science comes in, Waldo sience can tell Nick
- 9:41what was on that paper? I'll take my hat off to it. Even
- 9:43all Shimcotter couldn't do that. The use of infra red light and reading the
- 9:48writing on a burned paper is one of the new developments that. Did you
- 9:50find anything worthwhile? Maybe? Yes? Maybe no. Fortunately, that burned
- 9:56paper we found on the ashtray was a good grade of paper and didn't trumble
- 9:58before I could look at up work. Well, what'd you find? Nick?
- 10:01That piece of paper was really two separate pieces of paper. One was
- 10:05a wrapper of a bundle of bills, showing that the package had put up
- 10:07by the first Mutual Bank on Canal Street and had contained one hundred dollars probably
- 10:11and small bills. The other was part of a letter, so what did
- 10:15it say? All I could make out was another month, dear aunts,
- 10:18it'll be safe to use the money, so we and that's all fact.
- 10:24Why they help that is fancy. Do we have any record of the first
- 10:26mutual bank being robbed in the last year or so? I'll see Nick.
- 10:30The money this rapper was ut obviously came straight from the bank. No,
- 10:33nothing on the first mutual at all. But the record show there was a
- 10:37payroll robbery about six months ago in which the payroll messenger was robbed of They
- 10:41one hundred and fifty three thousand dollars that came from that bank. What was
- 10:45the kerm that was robbed? It was the Brownson Industrial Corporation just across the
- 10:48river, you know that big plant on Market Street. All right, let's
- 10:52call on the Brownson Industrial Corporation. I'm going to see this thing through to
- 10:58the end. You want to see me, mister I do. You're the
- 11:09payroll messenger. It was rabbed about six months ago. How are you?
- 11:13This is Nick Carter? Tell him much you know about it? Oh?
- 11:16Okay, Yeah, the guards that came with me from the bank left me
- 11:20at the side door the office building as usual, and I came along inside.
- 11:26There's a short corner there, about ten feet long, with a turn
- 11:28at the end leads into the general office. Well, I was just coming
- 11:33to the turn when a couple of old ladies stop me. Later later he
- 11:37said, two old ladies. Yeah, this couple old ladies stopped me and
- 11:41asked me how to get to the metal shop. I stopped to tell him,
- 11:45when all of a sudden I got a sack on the back of the
- 11:46head. Not me cold, then what happened? How do I know?
- 11:50I was out cold? And when I came to the assistant cashier was bending
- 11:54over me finally wake me up. My money bag was cut open. The
- 11:58money was gone, every nickel of it. Did anyone else see these two
- 12:01old ladies around? Yeah? Yeah, the gate man will let him in.
- 12:05He said he was coming to see their nephew, Walter basketm a clerk
- 12:09in the office here, So he let him go by without waiting for an
- 12:11okay, But Bascomb never saw him. He says, he ain't even got
- 12:16an inn and he didn't leave his desk all afternoon. But they seen after
- 12:18the robbery. Oh, they was out of the gate before the alarm was
- 12:22give out. The gate man saw him go and he described him. Well,
- 12:26they looked like a couple of sweet little old ladies, maybe like your
- 12:30pet grandmar One was short and chubby, the other was about middle size,
- 12:33kind kind of slender, like the same, Nick, They're very same.
- 12:37You're sure of that. World. Couldn't be no mischief, Nique. Look,
- 12:41you didn't find any clues as to who slugged you. No suspects at
- 12:45all, Nah, not a one. But it must have been somebody works
- 12:48in here. Couldn't that happened like it did? No other way? Okay?
- 12:50Thanks? Well, so long? Well, Nick, looks as if
- 12:56this is as far as we go, No many. There's just one more
- 13:00chance. I have the photograph I made of the piece of burned letter we
- 13:03found at the old Ladies place. Eh, the writer was the thief.
- 13:07It seems very probable if he does work here, as that messenger seemed to
- 13:09think, they might compare the writing on the letter with samples of the writing
- 13:13of the employees and the plant. Oh but Nick, that would take carever.
- 13:16There are several thousand employees here. Then two dames a die of old
- 13:20age, before we got that job done. Like, is not nicks wal.
- 13:24I just happened to remember when them two old dames just hand me up,
- 13:26they kept talking about somebody named Bill. You sure that sure? I'm
- 13:31sure they said this Bill was going to be pretty sol at him for getting
- 13:35found out. To Nikkas likes to search the thief a whole lot easier.
- 13:37For sure, we just look at the handwriting of every guy in the plant
- 13:41named William. There may be a lot of them, but it'll be a
- 13:43whole lot easier than checking up on everybody who works it. Oh well,
- 13:46I would look at it if you remember that name just in time. Come
- 13:48on, the personnel manager ought to be able to take up a specimen of
- 13:52this Bill's handwriting for us, as much as I got to say it isn't
- 14:03this William Hender? You mean to say that out of three hundred and forty
- 14:07seven guys named William who signed these employment cards the personnel manager gave us,
- 14:11there ain't one that lights like the sample in the photograph to the trains.
- 14:16I there's not one of them that's the same. Oh nke. That means
- 14:20the whole theory that an employees stole the money as out the windows. Yeah,
- 14:24that leaves us exactly nowhere. Maybe the guy's name aid William Attar,
- 14:30who could stand for some of them, of course, for that's the answer,
- 14:33it must be. His name was ver. Come on, let's get
- 14:37busy. We only have a few hundred more names to look through. Yes,
- 14:48this is it all right? Who is Wilfred Bergen? Work in the
- 14:52stockroom? A brown wears the stock room. If I could talk to this
- 14:56Bergen, it's in the next building back of this one. You'll probably find
- 15:01him in his desk. It's just to the right of the door. Would
- 15:03you like to have me call him and tell him you want to see him?
- 15:05Oh? Thanks, We don't want to want them. We're coming.
- 15:07We don't want them to get away before we have a talk with him.
- 15:18Oh that job sure was a neat setup. This Bergen watches the messenger,
- 15:24sees how he goes through this little corridor every time he comes back to the
- 15:28payroll. Tell us the old dames that what they do, and it all
- 15:33works out just as slick as grief. I asked the old lady stopped him
- 15:35the right place, and Bergen sucked him and they shielded him while they cut
- 15:39open the money bag, and they calm and went home, taking the money
- 15:41with him, probably one of those shopping bags women carrying. And Bergen went
- 15:45back to work and that was them. Yeah, they're waiting until the man
- 15:48he cools off so they can spend it. I wonder where they hit it.
- 15:52Well, they're waiting. I hope Bergen will answer that was there.
- 15:56Oh you're well for breg him. That's right, Bergan. This is Nick
- 16:02Carter. He wants to ask a few questions. Questions about one Bergen.
- 16:07What if you hide the money you got from the payroll robbery six months ago?
- 16:11I don't know what you're talking about it. I think you drew,
- 16:15you w your nts, knocked out the messenger and stole the payrolling mount into
- 16:18one hundred and fifty three thousand dollars. Now what did you do with it?
- 16:19You're crazy? I had nothing to do with that. I can't clean
- 16:22Bergen. We got your dead to rights. You think you can make me
- 16:23confess something I didn't do? Your nuts? Bergen? Is this your employment
- 16:27card? Yes? It is? What about it? This photographs show part
- 16:30of a letter you wrote to your aunts recently. Let me see it's hey,
- 16:33come back here, stop for our sup down the space. Maybe it
- 16:37isn't hard fan, you won't died Bergen. You only got shot no lego,
- 16:47my neck, my nick. They can't move. Let me see shot
- 16:56him in the lego, right, Maddie, been falling downstairs here. I'm
- 17:03afraid you haven't long to live before you go. Tell me where's the money?
- 17:10Isn't this something we can do for Bergen? Where did you hide the
- 17:15money? Buried where you'll never find? You might as well tell us where
- 17:22you're buried at Bergen? We can get your ams to tell. I'll never
- 17:26tell you. I get it alone. Find it if you can I store
- 17:37Yah, huh, I can't have it? No? Is he going neck?
- 17:48Yes, Maddy, he's dead, and the secret of where he hid
- 17:52the money died with him. Well, look, I ain't given up yet.
- 17:56If he buried it like he said, it's probably buried somewhere or around
- 18:00that house where his aunts live. Now, I'm gonna have a gang start
- 18:03digging there bright and early tomorrow morning. Good lucky you're meddy. I'll drop
- 18:07in on you later to see how you make out. Hello, sergeant,
- 18:18Hi am Maddy? How you making out? If I couldn't see you for
- 18:22myself. I ain't making out making We've been over this whole dog gone lot
- 18:27and not a sign of the money. Apply Berg must have buried it outside
- 18:32the limits of the property. Well, if he did, it can stay
- 18:33there for all of me. Do you realize, Nick, that this is
- 18:37the last street in this section. From here at it's open country and the
- 18:41darn stuff could be buried anywhere for the next five miles. Waddy, if
- 18:45I can tell you right where to dig for the money, we'll get rid
- 18:48once more. Neck Carter, you've been holding out of me again, so
- 18:52help you know I haven't been holding out on you. Answer my question.
- 18:56Yeah, I'll try it once more, but look, if it don't work,
- 18:59keep away from me next time I see you. Okay, Maddie,
- 19:02meet me here in the morning about ten o'clock. I may have something for
- 19:04you, So on tell I'm sergeant. Uh really have an idea? I
- 19:11do? I maybe I can come back here tonight and look at the exact
- 19:12spot. Form will tell me, Nick, what's your plan. I'm going
- 19:15to get hold of an army officer I know and have him help me help
- 19:18you. What locate the money? Is that all you're going to tell me?
- 19:22That's all for now. I like to surprise you, Betsy. Oh,
- 19:26someday you'll help me something and I'll surprise you. I'll probably drop dead
- 19:30at your feet. Sorry, this is such a blind search, Lieutenant,
- 19:41But as I said, we have no idea where the money was buried.
- 19:45That's all right, mister Carter. I'm used to working like this. Not
- 19:48too dark for you, is it? Oh? No, indeed I worked
- 19:51this gadget on darker nights than this, and god results. I suppose we
- 19:53swing over this way for a change. We pretty well covered the ground on
- 19:56that side. Okay, mister Carter, whatever you say over here. Maybe,
- 20:02yes, we don't find anything in this trip. I'm afraid we'll wait
- 20:06a minute. Not something I think so, Yes, yes, this is
- 20:11it. I'm sure, no question about it, not at all. I'm
- 20:14certain that if you dig here you'll find the money. Well, if the
- 20:17money is there, Mary, you'll find it. But we don't want your
- 20:21marry to find it, for we want to find it always there. Of
- 20:25course we do. The money belongs to us now, of course, an
- 20:30the two old ladies have tied Waldo up and left him in the house the
- 20:34other night. What brings you back? Here now the money, of course,
- 20:38I mean, how did you know we were out here? We didn't.
- 20:41But we read in the late evening paper last night that the killing of
- 20:45our nephew Bill had downed the table robbery, and that's the case was blown.
- 20:49And so we sai it would be stays to come back here and get
- 20:53our money. And we did. We found you here. We've been watching
- 21:00you for a long time from behind the trees. Oh yes, And now
- 21:03that you're here, how do you propose to go about digging it up?
- 21:07Oh? Sure, we can persuade you to do that for us, Misterta,
- 21:11Oh really, what makes you think? So? I got a gun,
- 21:17mister Cardor. We have two guns, one for each other's, and
- 21:21we both know how to shoot that straight. I didn't departed. Father taught
- 21:26us when we would get Look, ladies, you gotta let me have those
- 21:27guns. Somebody might get hurt. Nobody's going to get here, mister Carta,
- 21:32if you've got look here, A joke's a joke. This is getting
- 21:36to cut Put your hands up over yet you too, So do you put
- 21:41your hands up to What do we doing, mister Carter? We don't do
- 21:44anything. We just hey, went right past my ear? Are you putting
- 21:48your hands above your head? Now? I'll see here. This is all
- 21:52very I guess we better do it. I'd rather be silly than that's very
- 21:56Why have you okay? Okay, my hands are up. You see if
- 22:02either of them carrying a pistol, sister are reading a book that that's always
- 22:07the first thing to do in such cases. You please. The soldier doesn't
- 22:12have one. Oh oh, look, mister Carter has two pos. You
- 22:22put them over by that don't many where they'll be safe. Now? Will
- 22:26you start digging, mister Carter, I can't. I haven't to show you.
- 22:30I'll get you one. I remember seeing one in the cellar of our
- 22:33house. It isn't a very good one, but you can use it.
- 22:37You wait right there. He'll wait for you, sister, won't you,
- 22:42mister Carter? It looks that way. But now look here, it's no
- 22:48good. The police will be here before I can possibly get the hole deep
- 22:51enough to find the money. It's three o'clock already. Then. I'm afraid
- 22:53that will mean you'll have to hurry, mister Carter. We must have the
- 22:57money before the police come back, so you'd better take your coat off and
- 23:03get ready to dig real first look, sister. The soldier had gone to
- 23:18sleep for years, poor dear. He must be all worn out watching mister
- 23:22Carter work. So what time is it? Seven pointy? Oh dear?
- 23:27I do hope we can find the money before the police arrived, and mister
- 23:32Carter, yes, police dig a little faster, it's getting late. That's
- 23:52all right. Well, at least I have the satisfaction of knowing we've found
- 23:57the right place, like a ten. How do you want to be here?
- 24:02Back? Now? Are you too still up there? Yes, we
- 24:07are so, don't stop eat. We must get that box before the police
- 24:11survive. I don't have to dig anymore. I found it. You found

- 27:11and they could shoot them too. Believe you both stopped adding Nikki did the
- 27:15best he could, didn't you, Nick, Yes, Patsy, I did
- 27:18the best I could. I stalled around with the digging until time for mattered
- 27:21to show up. Of course, said they hadn't been two old ladies.
- 27:23I got a sure, sure, we know they hadn't been so weak.
- 27:27You can overpower them both single. Nikki, tell me how did you ever
- 27:33find where that money was buried? Patsy said, you were using some kind
- 27:36of a trick device, just the mind detector worl those same as they using
- 27:38the word to find hidden mind detector can find hidden metal even when it's buried
- 27:41as deep as his box was. How deep was it? Eight feet?
- 27:45And if you don't believe me, look at these blissoms, nick Look see
- 27:49that chap standing there watching nurse certainly say what about it? Red hair,
- 27:53tall, thin must live in this neighborhood, or he wouldn't be standing there
- 27:57kippeting, isn't is that the witness world has started out to find You're right,
- 28:03Betsy, and this matter has the thieves and the money, and we
- 28:04have our witness. We can consider the case clothes except for these bluster them.
- 28:11Nick Boy, your own father used to say, never be ashamed of
- 28:15honest toilets, remember technic, never be ashamed of honest toils, even if
- 28:19you do happen to be doing it at the point of a gun. Well
- 28:30neck, how about a few highlights on next week's show, just to what
- 28:33our appetite, good idea, I can my story next week is about a
- 28:37man who was killed by a rifle shot, but the bullet came from the
- 28:38wrong gun and the ladder was too long. The which was what The ladder
- 28:42was too long? So what that's the story? Together with the fact that
- 28:45the boys club met very late that night, that's enough. That's enough.
- 28:48What do you call this weird combination of clues? I call it the Case

- 29:53This is ken Paul saying so long until next week. This is a mutual
- 30:06broadcasting system. Welcome back. Well, this probably wasn't a highlight of Nick
- 30:18Carter's career, but to be fair to the greatest of all manhunters, here
- 30:23he did what he had to do. He made sure that he got down
- 30:29there in time to make sure that they're itchy trigger figures did not end up
- 30:37shooting him, But at the same time, he didn't really give them time
- 30:41to get away. You know, it may seem silly to have the great
- 30:47detective held captain by two little old ladies, but guns are an equalizer,
- 30:52and so Nick did the right thing, all right. Well, on to
- 30:55some listener comments and feedback. Michael says, I'm enjoying the fine collection of
- 31:02shows that you are presenting. I listened mostly during my six thirty am five
