- 0:00Anyway, back to the good stuff. All
- 0:01right, so I'm hyped for tonight's
- 0:02message because tonight we get to start
- 0:04something new for these last couple of
- 0:06weeks before we break for a couple weeks
- 0:08for Thanksgiving. Okay? And before you
- 0:10ask, no, I am not going to make you
- 0:13memorize stuff for this series. Okay?
- 0:15I'm going to wait until the new year
- 0:16before I make you memorize stuff and
- 0:19give you a chance for eternal glory. Um,
- 0:21okay. But just to to peel back the
- 0:23curtain for you guys a little bit, I
- 0:25know you're thinking like, Josh, what
- 0:27keeps you up at night? like what what
- 0:28makes your what makes you tick, right?
- 0:31So, just to peel back the curtain for a
- 0:32little bit, let you guys know, my my
- 0:34heart for student ministry is to try and
- 0:36help you guys uh have a big vision of
- 0:39God, right? Because if I'm up here every
- 0:41week and I spend every week telling you
- 0:43guys that you ought to live differently
- 0:45and you know, your your friends and
- 0:47classmates are going to be doing one
- 0:48thing and you should be doing something
- 0:49else, but then I give you this like
- 0:51teeny little picture of God, right? I
- 0:54don't think that that's going to take.
- 0:56So, so what I love to do is I love doing
- 0:59these series that are about big stuff,
- 1:00right? That it's about who God is. It's
- 1:02about the mission of Jesus. It's about
- 1:03the kingdom of God, breaking in the
- 1:05kingdom of darkness and Jesus kicking
- 1:07Satan's butt and like all of that stuff.
- 1:08Like, I love that, right? But sometimes
- 1:12we got to do more practical stuff, too,
- 1:13right? We got to talk about what it
- 1:15looks like to be a Christ follower in
- 1:17your daily life. Okay? But when we do
- 1:20the practical stuff like when we talk
- 1:21about forgiveness or anxiety or how
- 1:24Christians should handle money or those
- 1:26kinds of things, I don't want us to
- 1:27forget about the big vision of God that
- 1:30we serve. Right? So when the Bible says
- 1:33say not to be anxious, right? It's not
- 1:36because hey being anxious is bad. It's
- 1:38because of how mighty and loving and
- 1:40caring God our father is. When we talk
- 1:44about how Christians ought to handle
- 1:45money, it's because our God owns all of
- 1:48it already. So that means we ought to
- 1:50live and treat our money like we believe
- 1:52that's actually the case. If that makes
- 1:53sense. So for the next two weeks, and
- 1:56the graphic behind me is totally giving
- 1:57away what we're going to be talking
- 1:58about, but for the next two weeks, for
- 1:59this week and next week, we're going to
- 2:01be covering a very short twoe series on
- 2:03forgiveness. Okay? We're calling this
- 2:05series 70*
- 2:077. Uh, and you guys, I've had this this
- 2:09series in mind for months because I
- 2:12think that the call to forgiveness that
- 2:15the Bible gives us is maybe one of the
- 2:17most countercultural things that we can
- 2:20do as followers of Jesus. Like, you may,
- 2:23you know, be nice to people because
- 2:24Jesus was nice to people. You may like
- 2:26love your enemies because Jesus loved
- 2:27your enemies, but I'm telling you that
- 2:29if you forgive the way Jesus forgives,
- 2:32you will look radically different from
- 2:34the world around you. Harbor, let's save
- 2:36it to a small group. Um, so I think that
- 2:38the instructions that we see for
- 2:40Christians uh in the Bible show radical,
- 2:43over-the-top, undeserved forgiveness to
- 2:47one another. And I think that that is a
- 2:48picture of the gospel. I think that that
- 2:51is a picture of the good news of Jesus
- 2:53being worked out in our lives. Right?
- 2:55That radical over-the-top undeserved
- 2:58forgiveness. And just psych up, I'm
- 2:59gonna say that about 18 more times.
- 3:01Okay? That radical over-the-top
- 3:03undeserved forgiveness that we show to
- 3:05other people is a picture of the radical
- 3:08over-the-top undeserved forgiveness that
- 3:11we've received from God. Or if I say it
- 3:13in a different like more punchy way,
- 3:15we've been forgiven to forgive. And it's
- 3:18on that slide in the little tiny corner.
- 3:20It says we've been forgiven to forgive.
- 3:22All right, I'll say that one more time.
- 3:23We've been forgiven to forgive. So
- 3:27here's the main scripture that we're
- 3:28going to be working with for the next
- 3:29week, for this week and the next week.
- 3:30uh if you know your Gospel of Matthew
- 3:32and as always I have two stacks of
- 3:34Bibles that are back there. I encourage
- 3:36you to grab one because we'll be reading
- 3:37quite a bit of it later on. Um but it's
- 3:39going to be from Matthew 18 21 and 22.
- 3:44So Matthew 18:21 it says, "Then Peter,
- 3:47one of the followers of Jesus came to
- 3:49Jesus and asked, Lord, how often should
- 3:52I forgive someone who sins against me?
- 3:55See seven times." Now, before I read the
- 3:58next verse, and if you actually have a
- 3:59paper Bible, you're already there. But
- 4:00before I read that next verse, I want
- 4:02you to answer that question in your
- 4:04head. Okay? I want you to think in your
- 4:06minds, how many times do you think you
- 4:08ought to forgive people who do us dirty?
- 4:09Okay? Here's Jesus's answer. He says,
- 4:12"No, not seven times," Jesus replied.
- 4:15But 70*
- 4:16seven. What did you guys say? Hands up
- 4:20if you thought you should forgive people
- 4:22at least three times.
- 4:24>> Wow. Most of you are like, "No, I don't
- 4:26want to forgive people at least three
- 4:27times." A couple of you. Hands up if
- 4:28you're like, "Yes, I think that people
- 4:30ought to forgive at least three times."
- 4:32Maybe a few of you. Okay. Who said at
- 4:34least seven times? A couple of you. Did
- 4:38anyone say, "Yeah, 490 times." Like,
- 4:40that's the number for me. A couple of
- 4:43you who have read this passage before.
- 4:45Okay. Okay. Okay. So, so hands down,
- 4:47you're good. So what Jesus is saying
- 4:49here is so countercultural both back
- 4:53then and today. Okay. In Jesus's day,
- 4:56the standard rule that the Jews had for
- 4:58forgiveness was that you ought to
- 5:00forgive someone three times. And they
- 5:01had like Old Testament Bible reasons to
- 5:03say three times, that's it. Then you're
- 5:06done. And Peter and Peter as he's
- 5:08talking to Jesus, he seems to have this
- 5:09awareness that the standard for
- 5:11forgiveness is higher for followers of
- 5:14Jesus, right? like this is the guy who
- 5:16says y'all got to love your enemies and
- 5:18pray for those who persecute you, right?
- 5:19So, so Peter goes, he's like, I'm going
- 5:21to I'm going to [clears throat] raise
- 5:22the stakes, right? He more than doubles
- 5:24the amount that their culture says you
- 5:26ought to forgive, right? He goes, Jesus,
- 5:28seven times is that enough? And I said
- 5:30did four with my hand, but seven times
- 5:32is that enough? And Jesus tells him,
- 5:34nope. 70 times seven. Some translations
- 5:39are going to flip-flop the words on that
- 5:41and they're going to say that Jesus
- 5:42actually said 77 times. The point is not
- 5:44that you're supposed to like keep track
- 5:46of how many times you forgive somebody
- 5:48else and then you're like, "Okay, 76,
- 5:5077, 78, get out of here. You're done.
- 5:53Uh, now I'm not going to forgive you."
- 5:55Like, that's not what Jesus is saying,
- 5:56right? The point that he's making is
- 5:59that we ought to show other people
- 6:02limitless forgiveness. He's calling us
- 6:05to show other people radical,
- 6:08over-the-top, undeserved forgiveness to
- 6:11the people around us and the disciples,
- 6:13to the people around them. In another
- 6:15place in the Gospels, Jesus says that
- 6:17even if someone sins against you seven
- 6:19times in one day and they come to you
- 6:22for forgiveness, you got to forgive them
- 6:25and be reconciled. That is so
- 6:28countercultural.
- 6:29both when Jesus was saying this and
- 6:31today, I can see on some of your faces
- 6:33that you're like, I'm not thrilled about
- 6:34this. And I think maybe the the most
- 6:38powerful example of forgiveness that
- 6:40that I have seen in the past few years
- 6:42and and that maybe we like culturally
- 6:43have seen in the past few years happened
- 6:45just a few weeks ago at the memorial of
- 6:48Charlie Kirk. And I I thought if you
- 6:51know the the moment I'm speaking of um I
- 6:53thought about showing this clip from the
- 6:55memorial so that you could see what I'm
- 6:57talking about, but I was in my office
- 6:59playing the clip on my computer and I'm
- 7:01like ugly crying like in front of my
- 7:04laptop, right? So I'm not going to do
- 7:05that. Okay, so I'm going to just
- 7:07describe it to you. Okay, so Erica Kirk,
- 7:08that's Charlie Kirk's widow. um during
- 7:11her speech, her eulogy for her husband
- 7:13who has been assassinated, she has a
- 7:15hundred,000 people in this big stadium
- 7:18listening to her give this speech and
- 7:20another hundred million people who are
- 7:22watching online. And Erica Kirk says
- 7:24this. She says, "My husband Charlie, he
- 7:27wanted to save young men just like the
- 7:30one who took his life." That young man,
- 7:33[clears throat]
- 7:34that young man on the cross, our savior
- 7:37said, "Father, forgive them for they
- 7:40know not what they do." That man, that
- 7:44young man, I forgive him. I forgive him
- 7:48because it was what Christ did and it is
- 7:51what Charlie would do. The answer to
- 7:54hate is not hate. The answer we know
- 7:56from the gospel is love. [snorts] Always
- 7:59love. love for our enemies and love for
- 8:02those who persecute us.
- 8:05And listen,
- 8:07you can hear pin drop, dude. Okay, so
- 8:08listen, you can like like Charlie Kirk
- 8:11or not like Charlie Kirk. I'm really not
- 8:12talking about him as a dude. Fair
- 8:15enough. My point is that this Christian
- 8:18woman, his wife, out of the overflow of
- 8:21forgiveness that she had been shown by
- 8:24Jesus on the cross, forgave the man who
- 8:28murdered her husband. Not because he
- 8:30deserved it, not because what he did
- 8:32wasn't wrong. Not because it wasn't
- 8:34probably the most evil thing that could
- 8:36possibly happen to any one of us, but
- 8:40because that is the kind of radical,
- 8:43over-the-top, undeserved forgiveness
- 8:45that Jesus calls us to show others.
- 8:49That's the way that followers of Jesus
- 8:52are called to show the world that we're
- 8:54different from the world. That we are
- 8:56not a part of the kingdom of this world.
- 8:59That we are living for a different
- 9:01kingdom. [clears throat]
- 9:03The other reason why I wanted to share
- 9:05this clo this quote here is because I
- 9:07think that the memorial actually gave us
- 9:09another picture of how the world looks
- 9:12at Christian forgiveness. Okay. So, I'm
- 9:14going to read you a second quote. This
- 9:16[snorts] second quote comes from another
- 9:17person who spoke at the memorial. And
- 9:20just for the sake of cuz you know this
- 9:21person is not going to look great. So
- 9:22just for the sake of not like throwing
- 9:25shade at this other person, I'm not even
- 9:26going to tell you who it is, okay? But
- 9:28so this person got up uh to speak after
- 9:31Erica Kirk had um and he said this. He
- 9:34said Charlie did not hate his opponents.
- 9:39He wanted the best for them. No, you
- 9:40don't. That's where I disagreed with
- 9:43Charlie. I hate my opponents and I don't
- 9:47want the best for them. I'm sorry. I am
- 9:50sorry, Erica. But now Erica can talk to
- 9:53me and the whole group and maybe they
- 9:56can convince me that that's not right.
- 9:58But I can't stand my opponents.
- 10:01That is a direct quote. [laughter]
- 10:08>> Thank you. Thank you. [snorts]
- 10:11I was practicing it earlier and it was
- 10:12way worse. Okay. So, so I am not I I I
- 10:17that is the president of the United
- 10:19States saying that
- 10:22y'all. [laughter]
- 10:22That's crazy. And listen listen.
- 10:26I'm not I'm not saying that because I
- 10:28want to like clown the president, right?
- 10:30I'm not I'm not doing that. Um I'm
- 10:33bringing that up because the call to
- 10:35forgiveness that Jesus gives us is
- 10:38countercultural.
- 10:39It was countercultural in Jesus's day
- 10:41and it's counterultural today. And when
- 10:44the world sees a Christian person stand
- 10:46up and offer that radical, over-the-top,
- 10:50undeserved forgiveness, there is
- 10:52something in us that doesn't like it.
- 10:55There is something in us that says, "No,
- 10:58I don't want to forgive. I want to hold
- 11:01on to my grudges against people. I want
- 11:04to hold on to the feeling that I've been
- 11:07wronged." Right? That is true for
- 11:09Christians, too. It's true for me, too.
- 11:11I was talking to Jeremiah earlier, and I
- 11:13was like, "Think about the person who
- 11:16bullied you when you he you were a kid."
- 11:17He's like, "Oh, dude, if I saw him
- 11:19today, I wouldn't be responsible for
- 11:21what happens."
- 11:24There you go. See, like there there is
- 11:26something in us that does not want to
- 11:28forgive, right? And that's when when I f
- 11:30that's why when I found that Erica Kirk
- 11:32clip on YouTube, there's literally
- 11:34Christians in the comments on that video
- 11:37who's like, "Nah, she shouldn't forgive
- 11:40the shooter unless he repents." There's
- 11:42other people who were in the comments
- 11:43who were like, "Nah, this whole
- 11:44forgiveness thing is fake." Like, it was
- 11:47staged because these people can't
- 11:50imagine this woman truly being able to
- 11:53forgive the woman who killed her
- 11:54husband. So, one more example and then
- 11:57we'll move on. All right, this is uh not
- 12:00a good Christian forgiveness example.
- 12:02Okay, so I I remember when I was 16 and
- 12:05I had this friend who was a girl and I
- 12:07had a little bit of a crush on her and
- 12:09[snorts] and there was this one evening
- 12:10where where I was texting this girl and
- 12:12she was watching a TV show and I could
- 12:13like feel from the texts that she wasn't
- 12:16being super attentive to our text
- 12:18conversation, right? Like I'd be texting
- 12:19her this like whole paragraph. Kind of
- 12:21like if Samuel ever texts you, you're
- 12:23like, "Paragraph message." And then
- 12:26she'd be like, "Yeah,
- 12:29another paragraph. No,
- 12:32another paragraph. OMG, another
- 12:34paragraph. Lol. That'd be it." And
- 12:37finally, I was like, "Dude, this this is
- 12:39bad." I was like, "I feel like you're
- 12:40just not super interested in this
- 12:42conversation right now." And she was
- 12:44like, "Yeah, I'm kind of trying to watch
- 12:46this show.
- 12:48>> [laughter]
- 12:49>> So I never talked to her again.
- 12:52>> You applaud [gasps and laughter] y'all.
- 12:54Like what? That is crazy. Okay. Like I
- 12:56never talked to her again for what?
- 13:00Because you wanted to see what Jim and
- 13:01Pam were going to do. Like that's crazy.
- 13:04That is so petty. It's so stupid to just
- 13:07like completely ghost a friend over
- 13:09something that small, right? And and I
- 13:11will say, listen, if one of you guys
- 13:12texts me on like a Thursday night and
- 13:14I'm watching Planet Earth with Ava or
- 13:16something, you'll be lucky if you get a
- 13:17text back, okay? Like maybe you'll get a
- 13:20yeah, no, lol. Okay? Now, I I should
- 13:22have just let my friend watch the show
- 13:24and gotten over it, right? But my
- 13:25feelings were hurt and I didn't want to
- 13:28get over it, so I never talked to her
- 13:30again. That was before some of you guys
- 13:32were alive. Like that's that's how long
- 13:34ago that was. So moral of the story is
- 13:38don't be like me when I was 16. Okay? Be
- 13:41like Erica Kirk. Be like Jesus. Be so
- 13:45forgiving that people call you fake over
- 13:48it. We'll talk about why. I want to look
- 13:51at a passage from Paul's letter to the
- 13:52Colossians in chapter 3. Okay. Paul is
- 13:55writing to a church in the Greco Roman
- 13:57city of Colasse. And he has just given
- 14:00them this whole list of sins and told
- 14:02them that because these people are
- 14:04followers of Jesus, they need to not do
- 14:06all those things anymore. Okay? He tells
- 14:08them sexual sin is wrong, anger is
- 14:11wrong, dirty language is wrong, envy,
- 14:13slander, a bunch of other sins. He says
- 14:15all of these things need to be put to
- 14:17death in the life of a Christian. And in
- 14:20verse 12, he flips to the positive side.
- 14:23Okay? If [snorts] those are the things
- 14:25that we need to put to death, that we
- 14:26need to take off, here's what Paul says.
- 14:28we need to put on. Verse 12, he says,
- 14:31"Since God chose you to be the holy
- 14:33people he loves, you must clothe
- 14:35yourselves with tender-hearted mercy,
- 14:38kindness, humility, gentleness, and
- 14:41patience. Make allowance for each
- 14:43other's faults. And here's the important
- 14:46instructions for us tonight. And forgive
- 14:48anyone who offends you. Remember, the
- 14:51Lord forgave you, so you must forgive
- 14:55others. Above all, clothe yourselves
- 14:57with love which binds us all together in
- 15:00perfect harmony. He says to forgive
- 15:03anyone who offends you. If you read this
- 15:06passage out of the the ESV, the English
- 15:08Standard Version, he gives it a little
- 15:10bit of a different flavor. It says if
- 15:12one has a complaint against another to
- 15:15be forgiving each other. I think that
- 15:17these verses are so significant because
- 15:21they come right at the end of this big
- 15:23list of all the things not to do, right?
- 15:25Don't do this, don't do that, don't do
- 15:27this. And then he switches over to what
- 15:28we should do. And it's all about how we
- 15:32handle conflict with each other. He says
- 15:35to put on mercy, kindness, humility,
- 15:38gentleness, respect. How? By being
- 15:41understanding and gracious with the
- 15:44people who we have problems with. By
- 15:47realizing that those people are works in
- 15:49progress, just like we are. and by
- 15:52forgiving them in the way we've been
- 15:54forgiven. And not not, you know, to be
- 15:58forgiven by them, right? Or not not, you
- 16:00know, because they deserve it or
- 16:01something like that, but because of the
- 16:03way we've been forgiven by God. Paul
- 16:07gives us two reasons for why we need to
- 16:09forgive each other. Verse 12, he says,
- 16:11"Because God chose you to be his
- 16:13people." And in verse 13, because the
- 16:15Lord forgave you your sins. So, first
- 16:20reason, God chose you to be his people.
- 16:23If you are a Christian, that means as a
- 16:25follower of Jesus that you have been
- 16:27chosen by God to have a special
- 16:30relationship with him. You have been
- 16:31chosen by God to have your sins
- 16:33forgiven. You've been chosen to be
- 16:35adopted into God's family as a son or a
- 16:38daughter. You have been chosen to rule
- 16:40the world with Jesus when he comes in
- 16:43power. You have been chosen to have your
- 16:46body be a temple for the Holy Spirit of
- 16:48God, to be the place where God's spirit
- 16:50lives. And you have been chosen to go
- 16:55out and share the message of forgiveness
- 16:58with the world. That anyone who would
- 17:00turn and and come to God can turn from
- 17:03their sins and trust in Christ for
- 17:05forgiveness and they can have it.
- 17:09So if we are chosen by God for all of
- 17:11those things, right, and to be the
- 17:14messengers of of God's good news of
- 17:16forgiveness, but then we have beef with
- 17:19someone and we refuse to forgive them
- 17:21ourselves, right? Or we hold grudges
- 17:23against them or we ghost them, right?
- 17:25We're actually painting the opposite
- 17:27picture of the one God wants our lives
- 17:30to paint.
- 17:32The picture that God wants to paint with
- 17:34our lives is one of the radical,
- 17:37over-the-top, undeserved forgiveness
- 17:40that God wants to offer the world. And
- 17:42the only way that we can paint that
- 17:45picture in miniature is by offering our
- 17:48own radical, over-the-top, undeserved
- 17:51forgiveness to other people. And and
- 17:53here's the the even bigger picture or
- 17:55the even bigger reason why we're called
- 17:57to forgive others. Paul says it's
- 17:59because of how radically we have been
- 18:02forgiven. Of all the things that Paul
- 18:05mentions in these verses, right, this is
- 18:07the one that he doubles down and he
- 18:09gives you an extra reason for, right? I
- 18:12think he knows it's because it's I think
- 18:14he knows how hard it is for us to
- 18:16forgive others, especially when they
- 18:18don't deserve it. I imagine that there
- 18:20are some of you guys who are sitting
- 18:22here who like for the past 20 minutes
- 18:24have been thinking of one person or a
- 18:26couple of people who you just do not
- 18:28want to forgive. I know Jeremiah is.
- 18:32Maybe you're thinking, "Dude, that
- 18:33person, they don't deserve to be
- 18:36forgiven."
- 18:37And you know what? Neither did you.
- 18:41Neither did you. But because the God we
- 18:44serve is so loving and kind and gracious
- 18:48and gentle with you, he chose you and
- 18:51forgave you and has now sent you out
- 18:54into the world to be a little Jesus and
- 18:57to forgive others. Not because they
- 18:59deserve it, but because you didn't
- 19:01deserve it, and God loved you anyway.
- 19:05God forgave you anyway.
- 19:08When I was in college, [snorts] uh, I
- 19:09had a roommate who I had beef with for
- 19:11the entire time that we lived together,
- 19:13right? We, this is not just like every
- 19:15relationship in my life to be clear. It
- 19:16really sounds like it, but okay, giving
- 19:19specific examples. So, I had this
- 19:20roommate who I had beef with the entire
- 19:22time we lived together, right? We had
- 19:23been really good friends uh, before we
- 19:25decided to live together, but as soon as
- 19:26we moved in together, we started having
- 19:28problems. Okay? And by the time we moved
- 19:29out, we lived together for 2 years. By
- 19:31the time we moved out, I had all of this
- 19:33resentment and bitterness that had built
- 19:36up in my heart over that time toward
- 19:38this guy. And by that point, I had to
- 19:40start I started to get serious about my
- 19:42walk with the Lord. And I could feel the
- 19:44Holy Spirit prompting me to forgive my
- 19:46roommate. And you know what? I didn't
- 19:49want to at all. I liked my bitterness. I
- 19:53liked my resentment. I liked my
- 19:56unforgiveness toward him. It made me
- 19:57feel like I had been wronged, like I had
- 20:00been mistreated.
- 20:02So I started praying for him. Not like
- 20:05old school King David like God knock
- 20:07some sense into this knucklehead type of
- 20:09prayer, right? I not that. I started
- 20:12praying that God would bless him in his
- 20:14relationship,
- 20:16in his career. He's a very talented
- 20:18actor. I started praying that God would
- 20:20like bless him with with parts and
- 20:21acting roles. I started praying that God
- 20:24would bless him in his studies. And over
- 20:26time, I found that the anger and the
- 20:29bitterness that I had been holding on
- 20:31to, it slowly began to melt away. Y'all,
- 20:34it is very hard to be praying that God
- 20:37would bless someone and also to stay mad
- 20:40at them. And over time, I found myself
- 20:44able to forgive this roommate. And now,
- 20:46genuinely, I don't have any bitterness
- 20:48in my heart toward this guy at all. Now,
- 20:51before I finish up, I said at the
- 20:53beginning that one of my goals in
- 20:55student ministry is to give you guys a
- 20:56big vision of the God we serve. Okay? I
- 20:59think that extends to this conversation
- 21:01about forgiveness here, right? I think
- 21:03that when it is hard to forgive, it's
- 21:05because we have a view of forgiveness
- 21:07that is too small. It's focused on me
- 21:11and this other person and like maybe a
- 21:13little bit about how God tells me to
- 21:15forgive 70* 7, but I don't want to.
- 21:18Right? But when we zoom out and we see
- 21:22that the forgiveness we've been given is
- 21:24so much bigger, so much more radical,
- 21:28over-the-top, undeserved, because the
- 21:30wrongs we've done are so much worse, and
- 21:34our wrongs against the king of the
- 21:36universe.
- 21:38When we see that the forgiveness we've
- 21:40received is so much more radical and
- 21:43over-the-top and undeserved because
- 21:45Jesus himself let himself be hung on a
- 21:48cross to buy us that forgiveness. That's
- 21:52how we can forgive. That's how Erica
- 21:55Kirk could forgive because her
- 21:57forgiveness was out of the overflow of
- 22:00the forgiveness she'd been given by God.
- 22:03So, as we finish up tonight, I want to
- 22:05leave us just by meditating on Psalm
- 22:08103. Okay? I'm not going to give a bunch
- 22:11of commentary on it, uh, on those
- 22:12verses. I'm going to just read them
- 22:14slowly, and I'm going to let us sit in
- 22:15silence for like a minute or two. Okay?
- 22:18And while I read them, what I want you
- 22:19to be doing is I want us to be thinking
- 22:21about the radical, over-the-top,
- 22:24undeserved forgiveness that God has
- 22:26given to us. And if you are in this room
- 22:30and you are not a Christ follower,
- 22:32right? If you have never received the
- 22:34forgiveness of your sins, if you have
- 22:36never put your trust in Christ, I want
- 22:38to invite you in this time to pray in
- 22:40your heart. Lord, I know I am a sinner.
- 22:43I know that I need your radical,
- 22:46over-the-top, undeserved forgiveness.
- 22:48Jesus, I am trusting in you for your in
- 22:52your death and resurrection for
- 22:53forgiveness and eternal life with God.
- 22:56So, I'm going to read Psalm 103. You can
- 22:58close your eyes. You can bow your heads.
- 22:59You can read along. It's up to you.
- 23:02Psalm 103
- 23:04says, "Let all that I am praise the Lord
- 23:07with my whole heart. I will praise his
- 23:09holy name. Let all that I am praise the
- 23:12Lord. May I never forget the good things
- 23:16he does for me. He forgives all my sins
- 23:21and heals all my diseases. He redeems me
- 23:25from death and crowns me with love and
- 23:27tender mercies. He fills my life with
- 23:30good things. My youth is renewed like
- 23:33the eagles. The Lord gives righteousness
- 23:36and justice to all who are who are
- 23:39treated unfairly. He revealed his
- 23:41character to Moses and his deeds to the
- 23:43people of Israel. The Lord is
- 23:45compassionate and merciful, slow to get
- 23:48angry and filled with unfailing love. He
- 23:53will not constantly accuse us nor remain
- 23:55angry for forever. He does not punish us
- 23:58for all our sins. He does not deal
- 24:01harshly with us as we deserve. For his
- 24:04unfailing love toward those who fear him
- 24:06is as great as the height of the heavens
- 24:09above the earth. He has removed our sins
- 24:11as far from us as the east is from the
- 24:14west. The Lord is like a father to his
- 24:18children, tender and compassionate to
- 24:20those who fear him. For he knows how
- 24:23weak we are. He remembers that we are
- 24:25only dust. Our days on earth are like
- 24:28grass, like wild flowers. We bloom and
- 24:30die. The wind blows and we are gone as
- 24:34though we had never been here. But the
- 24:36love of the Lord remains forever with
- 24:38those who fear him. His salvation
- 24:41extends to the children's children of
- 24:43those who are faithful to his covenant
- 24:46of those who obey his commandments.
- 24:49The Lord has made the heavens his
- 24:50throne. From there he rules over
- 24:53everything.
- 24:55Praise the Lord you angels, you mighty
- 24:58ones who carry out his plans, listening
- 25:01for each of his commands. Yes, praise
- 25:04the Lord you armies of angels who serve
- 25:07him and do his will. Praise the Lord.
- 25:11Everything he has created, everything in
- 25:14all his kingdom. Let all that I am.
- 25:17Praise the Lord.
