- 1:59Speaker 1: Now here's Leah Rose with Rico Nasty.
- 2:03Speaker 2: So let's talk Lethal.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Yes.
- 2:06Speaker 4: I just saw your new video on the low. Came
- 2:08Speaker 4: out to yeah, and it's so different. So when I
- 2:12Speaker 4: heard the song, I pictured baby pink and like you
- 2:17Speaker 4: in like a candy store or something like really sweet
- 2:20Speaker 4: and girly. And then I see the video and it's
- 2:23Speaker 4: you like twerking in a truck bed in a junk yard,
- 2:27Speaker 4: and I'm like, oh, this is different.
- 2:31Speaker 2: So how did you come up with a visual? How
- 2:33Speaker 2: does that usually come to you?
- 2:34Speaker 3: I just wanted to still keep my grunge.
- 2:37Speaker 5: Like I think the overall inspiration was like horror movie vibes,
- 2:41Speaker 5: like still embodying like this winter type of energy, like
- 2:49Speaker 5: Winter Ringleader type of energy. But I feel like I
- 2:53Speaker 5: watch a lot of movies, so I'm always like, oh,
- 2:56Speaker 5: I want to do that.
- 2:57Speaker 3: This shot is cool, this is fire.
- 3:01Speaker 5: But yeah, shout out to the director on that, because
- 3:03Speaker 5: what actually happened is I had sent one treatment and
- 3:08Speaker 5: he and I broke it up into so many different
- 3:11Speaker 5: ideas that like, there's so much more to come. I'm
- 3:14Speaker 5: so excited to drop more visuals because everyone's so excited
- 3:16Speaker 5: about about this one. Obviously this one is a lot
- 3:19Speaker 5: more different than the last one, and it'll be like that,
- 3:23Speaker 5: like moving forward. I just really like, yeah, i feel
- 3:27Speaker 5: like I'm just taking all the risks and just doing
- 3:30Speaker 5: what I really want to do and just try my
- 3:32Speaker 5: best to like still maintain.
- 3:35Speaker 3: My authenticity and like the things.
- 3:37Speaker 5: That I enjoy, because I feel like I don't really
- 3:40Speaker 5: like baby pink stuff.
- 3:42Speaker 2: You know.
- 3:42Speaker 4: I know it's very much not you, but I felt
- 3:44Speaker 4: like this song is a little different.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Yeah, And that's how I felt too.
- 3:48Speaker 5: I was like, oh my god, like, well, it could
- 3:51Speaker 5: still be a softer side, it could fin inside, but
- 3:55Speaker 5: like in my own way, but like, yeah, that song
- 3:59Speaker 5: definitely it gives pink, It gives bubbly cuteesy yeah, like
- 4:05Speaker 5: soft furry yes.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Oh soffer.
- 4:10Speaker 4: So when you say you sent a treatment, what is that?
- 4:12Speaker 4: Is that like you writing out what you see in
- 4:15Speaker 4: your mind?
- 4:16Speaker 2: Is it like different shots? Like what is a treatment?
- 4:19Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 4:19Speaker 5: So a treatment is basically a shot list of everything
- 4:25Speaker 5: that you're trying to accomplish in the video.
- 4:28Speaker 3: So you know, some.
- 4:29Speaker 5: People follow more like mood boards, but I think mood
- 4:33Speaker 5: boards kind of like limit creativity.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Because it's too like spot on.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Yeah, so.
- 4:42Speaker 3: The treatment will normally be like.
- 4:45Speaker 5: References of the way that I want things shot at
- 4:48Speaker 5: certain angles and maybe the lighting some of like the
- 4:51Speaker 5: b roll shots that I want to get.
- 4:53Speaker 3: So yeah, like I use like videos that I like.
- 4:57Speaker 4: Do you remember any references like movies or other videos.
- 5:02Speaker 5: We definitely referenced like some old horror movie films on
- 5:06Speaker 5: the coloring, like in the beginning seen with the car,
- 5:10Speaker 5: just like the mild saturation but still keeping like those
- 5:14Speaker 5: cool tones. That was like something that I've seen like
- 5:16Speaker 5: in rob zombie films. So I remember that kind of
- 5:19Speaker 5: being a part of like the treatment.
- 5:21Speaker 3: Like, so, yeah, it's not always other music videos.
- 5:26Speaker 5: Yeah, it's sometimes it's like actual films and things that
- 5:30Speaker 5: I've just seen and I'm like, whoa, I really love this.
- 5:33Speaker 5: Like another one is AFX twin Yeah, window lickor love
- 5:39Speaker 5: the scene where it's like he does a close up
- 5:41Speaker 5: of the limousine and the tire rim had his logo
- 5:47Speaker 5: on it. I was like, last minute, I'm like, oh,
- 5:49Speaker 5: we need a lethal flag. We need something that's in
- 5:52Speaker 5: in in the shots.
- 5:54Speaker 3: So I thought about it. Yeah, sense of like at.
- 5:56Speaker 5: The shows, like and people who are doing like the
- 5:59Speaker 5: marsh pits and stuff. I think it's like there's like
- 6:03Speaker 5: a language that could come with it, Like the leader
- 6:05Speaker 5: of the pit could have, you know, the flag, the
- 6:08Speaker 5: person who's come into the show. It's ready to function up.
- 6:10Speaker 5: You have your flag, and you keep your flag up
- 6:14Speaker 5: no matter what.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Do people usually bring flags to the pit.
- 6:18Speaker 3: They bring all types of shit to the pit.
- 6:22Speaker 5: It's some so though I don't even know how the
- 6:24Speaker 5: fuck they're getting into, but yeah, they bring a lot
- 6:27Speaker 5: of shit to the pit.
- 6:30Speaker 4: It's so crazy, Like I feel like your shows are
- 6:32Speaker 4: the first time I've seen women or just girls in
- 6:34Speaker 4: a pit.
- 6:36Speaker 5: Yeah, in those earlier days, it was really really crazy
- 6:40Speaker 5: watching everybody just like get their shit off their chests.
- 6:44Speaker 3: Yes, we don't really get to do that. Yeah.
- 6:47Speaker 4: And I feel like there's a misconception about it too,
- 6:49Speaker 4: because I feel like people think that it is just
- 6:51Speaker 4: people like fucking each other up, but it's actually like
- 6:54Speaker 4: such a community it is.
- 6:56Speaker 5: I mean, I feel like there's some there's a sense
- 6:59Speaker 5: of like they're kind of like synchronized in some in
- 7:03Speaker 5: some of the pits, it's not always beating each other up.
- 7:06Speaker 5: Sometimes it's just like having your arms around your front
- 7:09Speaker 5: and you're jumping at the same time and you're just
- 7:13Speaker 5: feeling it and it's like twenty of you guys that
- 7:15Speaker 5: could be a pet.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Everyone kind of like.
- 7:19Speaker 5: Just rapping the lyrics and feeling that shit with their
- 7:22Speaker 5: whole hearted chest.
- 7:23Speaker 3: And I think like where that comes from.
- 7:25Speaker 5: It is just like so much anger having to be
- 7:27Speaker 5: repressed on an everyday basis. Like I feel like, unfortunately
- 7:32Speaker 5: it's okay for men to lash out, Like, you know,
- 7:36Speaker 5: it's always been somewhat accepted in a symbol of power
- 7:40Speaker 5: for a man to lash out and have no repercussions
- 7:43Speaker 5: for their actions, but with women, it's always consequences for
- 7:48Speaker 5: our actions. And I just feel like when we were
- 7:52Speaker 5: doing that, I feel like it was kind of like
- 7:56Speaker 5: we would have people at the shows trying to split
- 7:59Speaker 5: the pit up.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Y'all can't be doing this, don't inside a pit.
- 8:02Speaker 5: But it's like, well, when else are we going to
- 8:04Speaker 5: get to do this and not be looked at it's crazy,
- 8:07Speaker 5: or not have a consequence, or not get kicked out
- 8:10Speaker 5: of something or get thrown in jail or actual fight breakout.
- 8:15Speaker 5: It's like, where is the space to just be a
- 8:19Speaker 5: woman and want to fuck somebody up.
- 8:23Speaker 4: And not care what you look like, get sweaty, like
- 8:27Speaker 4: not have your makeup or everything have to be the
- 8:29Speaker 4: same as when you walked into a venue.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Like it just it's such a release.
- 8:33Speaker 5: Yeah, And I love that part too because I go
- 8:37Speaker 5: through the same thing on the stage, like I don't
- 8:39Speaker 5: look the same when I come out and when I
- 8:40Speaker 5: go backstage like I'm drenched in fucking sweat and we
- 8:45Speaker 5: done have a time, And I just, yeah, I love
- 8:48Speaker 5: that and I live for that. And that's not pretty,
- 8:51Speaker 5: That's not I don't think that's meant to be pretty.
- 8:52Speaker 3: And I appreciate that.
- 8:54Speaker 5: I appreciate the fact that they allow me that space
- 8:57Speaker 5: to spend money on a nice outfit just to come
- 9:01Speaker 5: getting Fu Sun.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Yeah, that's incredible.
- 9:05Speaker 4: Have you ever wanted to do like a make a
- 9:08Speaker 4: major left turn and try a whole different genre or
- 9:12Speaker 4: something new for you that would be unexpected? But you're
- 9:15Speaker 4: just like, I don't think it's the right time, or
- 9:18Speaker 4: it's too early or whatever, Like, is there any type
- 9:22Speaker 4: of music that is completely different from what you've already
- 9:26Speaker 4: put out there?
- 9:28Speaker 3: Hm? I think like me being you know, the smack
- 9:32Speaker 3: of bitch Girl.
- 9:33Speaker 5: I'm very rah And I think that when you think
- 9:37Speaker 5: Rico Nasci and you think rock music, it's always been
- 9:41Speaker 5: scream Oh, it's always been metal. It's always been new metal,
- 9:44Speaker 5: hip hop metal. It's always been like that sense of
- 9:46Speaker 5: like angst and growl with it. But I have two
- 9:50Speaker 5: songs on this album that don't have that. It's rock music, though,
- 9:54Speaker 5: and it's more so influenced by the rock music that
- 9:57Speaker 5: I actually listen to. Like, it's more so influenced by like,
- 10:02Speaker 5: you know, like beachy rock or like just more a calm,
- 10:07Speaker 5: calm side.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Yes, I see.
- 10:09Speaker 5: I'm like so happy that people are receiving on the
- 10:12Speaker 5: low the way that they are because on the low
- 10:14Speaker 5: is very girly.
- 10:15Speaker 3: You're gonna get like.
- 10:15Speaker 5: Another vulnerable side of me with these rock songs that's
- 10:19Speaker 5: very very feminine, very girly, but also very rico. And
- 10:25Speaker 5: I'm like really excited for people to hear those because
- 10:28Speaker 5: I don't think. I don't think people thought I could
- 10:32Speaker 5: make a song like that.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Yes, is that?
- 10:34Speaker 4: Do you think you getting into the like the beachy
- 10:37Speaker 4: rock or the more mellow side of things, like what
- 10:40Speaker 4: you actually listen to? Is that you getting older?
- 10:44Speaker 2: Do you think?
- 10:45Speaker 4: Is that just where you're at in your life? Like
- 10:47Speaker 4: where have you always listened to sort of like more
- 10:49Speaker 4: mellow stuff?
- 10:51Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 10:51Speaker 5: I always listened to more mellow stuff really. Yeah, Like
- 10:56Speaker 5: literally my favorite band is like Care for Cutie, Like
- 11:03Speaker 5: I've always liked the softer the radio Heads. They's the
- 11:08Speaker 5: drum shout out to the drums because I got to
- 11:11Speaker 5: work with him, so like you know, like I've I
- 11:14Speaker 5: really like that side, and I just feel like, you know,
- 11:18Speaker 5: my character is so rash coming out the gate swinging
- 11:21Speaker 5: that I don't think I got to show that side
- 11:24Speaker 5: or show that I was even interested in showing that side.
- 11:27Speaker 3: So yeah, I'm really like, I'm really excited.
- 11:29Speaker 5: But to say it's like, yeah, I'm growing up, But
- 11:33Speaker 5: I also feel like I am pleasing my inner child
- 11:36Speaker 5: because there's still songs on there. Son of a Gun,
- 11:41Speaker 5: Smoke Break, There's some songs on there that you just
- 11:44Speaker 5: know like these are these are gonna be classic cult
- 11:47Speaker 5: Rick on Nasty records that will be played at shows,
- 11:50Speaker 5: that will get the party started, like yea, those are
- 11:52Speaker 5: the ones that I'm kind of just like, I'm never
- 11:55Speaker 5: gonna stop making those.
- 11:56Speaker 3: I'll always be me. But there's something that I've done
- 11:59Speaker 3: in all my projects.
- 12:00Speaker 5: It's like there's there's always been like two or three,
- 12:03Speaker 5: three or four that are like, hmm, what's this. This
- 12:05Speaker 5: is a little bit, this is different, this is cool,
- 12:08Speaker 5: and I just like showing people like, yeah, there isn't
- 12:11Speaker 5: a limit to music. I'm not just a rapper. I
- 12:13Speaker 5: feel like I'm at this point, I'm a real, like,
- 12:16Speaker 5: real deal artist.
- 12:16Speaker 3: Where we've been, we've been jumped out of that.
- 12:20Speaker 5: And I do appreciate all of my fans that are
- 12:24Speaker 5: here because I do my rap music and there is
- 12:26Speaker 5: rap music on this project. Like I don't want people
- 12:28Speaker 5: to think, oh, she's just doing rock or softer songs.
- 12:32Speaker 3: No, Like it's still intense. It's a ride. I just
- 12:35Speaker 3: want people to yeah, I didn't have fun.
- 12:38Speaker 2: How do you know if something is catchy?
- 12:41Speaker 4: Like when you're in the studio and you're recording something,
- 12:44Speaker 4: Cause I feel like the first two singles are so catchy,
- 12:46Speaker 4: Like do you have to listen to something a hundred
- 12:49Speaker 4: times before you know? Like some part of the song,
- 12:51Speaker 4: like whether it's a riff or the hook, something's gonna
- 12:54Speaker 4: like embed itself in your mind.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Like how do you know? Do you play it out
- 12:58Speaker 2: somewhere like.
- 13:00Speaker 3: The kids tell you if it's catchy.
- 13:02Speaker 2: So you put it out online.
- 13:04Speaker 5: I don't even put it out online. I play it
- 13:06Speaker 5: for my son. I send it to my little cousins.
- 13:09Speaker 5: I just I rely on younger people.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Are they honest with you?
- 13:17Speaker 3: Always? Always?
- 13:18Speaker 2: What did they say? If they don't like it?
- 13:20Speaker 5: They just don't respond, super jen Z, They just don't respond.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Does it hurt your feelings?
- 13:27Speaker 1: No?
- 13:27Speaker 3: I love it if you know what's funny?
- 13:30Speaker 5: Like, sometimes I just be wanting, Like when I make music,
- 13:35Speaker 5: I swear, I just be wanting to like welcome to
- 13:37Speaker 5: a random person and be like can you listen to
- 13:39Speaker 5: this real quick enough.
- 13:40Speaker 3: Yes, like, yeah, I'm not scared of that.
- 13:44Speaker 5: Like I'm like, you like this, come here, you look
- 13:46Speaker 5: like you go like this Like I don't really, I
- 13:48Speaker 5: don't care about that type of stuff.
- 13:50Speaker 3: But yeah, the lot on the kids rely on my friends.
- 13:53Speaker 5: My friends will tell me if something is not My
- 13:55Speaker 5: friends will tell me halfway through the song if they don't.
- 13:58Speaker 4: Oh, but sometimes you need but sometimes you need to
- 14:00Speaker 4: hear a song like eight times before, you know. I
- 14:04Speaker 4: always have that experience where I listen to something, I'm like,
- 14:06Speaker 4: I don't like this, but then if I hear it enough,
- 14:09Speaker 4: you might hear something different or you might.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Catch I think, and this could just be my artist take.
- 14:19Speaker 5: I think that those two songs are catchy because the
- 14:25Speaker 5: hooks were made before the verses, so normally I feel
- 14:30Speaker 5: like that plays a really big part. Spending a lot
- 14:33Speaker 5: of time on the hook and hearing it over.
- 14:37Speaker 3: And over again.
- 14:38Speaker 5: And it's not something that I just pulled out of
- 14:40Speaker 5: the verse and repeated. It's like, yes, we worked on it.
- 14:44Speaker 5: We worked on melodies, we worked on bridges, we worked
- 14:47Speaker 5: on tweaking shit and different layers and how can we
- 14:52Speaker 5: make especially for teeth sucker. How can we make the
- 14:55Speaker 5: vocals and the guitar collaborate in a sense and on
- 15:00Speaker 5: the low how can we.
- 15:03Speaker 3: Repeat this hook but not make them get tired of it?
- 15:07Speaker 1: And what is it?
- 15:09Speaker 3: What's the bounce that we're feeling? How do we vocalize that?
- 15:13Speaker 5: And it's like when they were producing the beat and
- 15:16Speaker 5: we were doing the writing for the verse, the melody
- 15:20Speaker 5: was uh, and then it wound up just being used.
- 15:26Speaker 3: On the on the chorus. So I don't know.
- 15:29Speaker 5: I think that that could play a huge part. Actually,
- 15:32Speaker 5: it will take time on the hooks and a kind
- 15:34Speaker 5: of like.
- 15:36Speaker 3: Pop way.
- 15:38Speaker 4: Yeah, So what is the hardest part for you? Like,
- 15:42Speaker 4: is it hard for you to come up with melodies?
- 15:44Speaker 4: Is it hard for you to fill in the lyrics?
- 15:46Speaker 4: Is it hard for you to think of the overall
- 15:49Speaker 4: vision for the song? Like, what's the most difficult part.
- 15:52Speaker 3: The most difficult part, bro, is narrowing down the ideas.
- 15:57Speaker 2: That's wow, Well that's good.
- 15:58Speaker 5: That's a good problem, yeah, because it just feels like
- 16:01Speaker 5: I'd be wanting to talk about everything all at once,
- 16:05Speaker 5: and sometimes a song is supposed to be about thing,
- 16:09Speaker 5: so handling and honing in on that one thing, thinking
- 16:13Speaker 5: of bars and metaphors and things that have happened in
- 16:17Speaker 5: my life to relate to this one thing and then
- 16:21Speaker 5: making it sound cool.
- 16:23Speaker 2: Yeah, that would be hard making it sound cool.
- 16:26Speaker 5: Yeah, that is the hardest part too, making it sound cool,
- 16:29Speaker 5: because I feel like I take a lot of risks
- 16:32Speaker 5: vocally and sometimes like when I'm rapping, like I don't
- 16:36Speaker 5: really I just I stretch words and I do stuff like,
- 16:41Speaker 5: you know, just just to be funny, and yes, just
- 16:44Speaker 5: help to make it sound I don't know, whatever the
- 16:46Speaker 5: fuck Have you.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Ever thought that something was cool and then someone told
- 16:50Speaker 2: you it was corny?
- 16:52Speaker 3: Yeah? For sure, for sure, for sure, and like the
- 16:56Speaker 3: whole first five years of my career, that would be.
- 17:01Speaker 4: Hard because you're like, no, like what if you're pushing
- 17:04Speaker 4: a limit and it's something people haven't heard yet, but
- 17:07Speaker 4: someone's like closed minded and they don't know.
- 17:10Speaker 1: I know.
- 17:10Speaker 5: I kind of just feel like I've always been a
- 17:12Speaker 5: niche thing. I've never considered myself a steak dinner. I'm
- 17:17Speaker 5: a very acquired taste. I'm not something you're gonna find
- 17:19Speaker 5: that outback steakhouse. Like, yeah, I'm not like a fucking
- 17:23Speaker 5: blooming onion, Like I'm not like, you know, I'm like,
- 17:26Speaker 5: fucking what am I? I'm like a like a baja
- 17:30Speaker 5: taco like kind like the really really good fry fish
- 17:34Speaker 5: baja tacos. Like you got to go to a steak
- 17:36Speaker 5: shop exactly, you have to go to a special spot.
- 17:39Speaker 5: It's a mom and pop shop. Not everybody knows about it,
- 17:42Speaker 5: but it tastes good every time. And I'm okay with that.
- 17:45Speaker 5: Like I'm okay with not being McDonald's.
- 17:46Speaker 3: I don't want to be McDonald's.
- 17:48Speaker 5: So I definitely like pride myself on being niche and
- 17:52Speaker 5: being unliked in some spaces, Like that's totally fine with me.
- 17:56Speaker 2: That's cool. I feel like that takes courage.
- 17:58Speaker 4: Like were you like that growing up? Did you care
- 18:02Speaker 4: if people like did you care about fitting in? And
- 18:04Speaker 4: did you care about what people thought about you?
- 18:07Speaker 3: I think I cared too much. I think I cared
- 18:08Speaker 3: so much that I cared enough for the rest of
- 18:11Speaker 3: my life.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Oh huh.
- 18:13Speaker 3: Yeah. And then once I hit eighteen, I was like, wait,
- 18:15Speaker 3: I don't have to care.
- 18:17Speaker 2: But then.
- 18:19Speaker 5: Let's talk about that because being eighteen and getting like
- 18:22Speaker 5: a shit ton of money kind of like thrown at you. Yeah,
- 18:25Speaker 5: it's kind of hard to decipher what you care and
- 18:28Speaker 5: don't care about and it just kind of comes off
- 18:30Speaker 5: as like all over the place.
- 18:32Speaker 2: Okay, wait, so you mean like you can't say no
- 18:34Speaker 2: to the money or.
- 18:36Speaker 3: You just don't know what to say no to.
- 18:38Speaker 5: Everything is so new and invigorating, and so it's so exciting.
- 18:42Speaker 5: It's like I'm not gonna say no. Why would I
- 18:44Speaker 5: say no?
- 18:45Speaker 3: And then the older that you.
- 18:46Speaker 5: Get, you realize how powerful the word no is and
- 18:50Speaker 5: now how much it could have protected you. The older
- 18:53Speaker 5: that you get, but you are so happy to even
- 18:56Speaker 5: be in the space that you're just like I'm going
- 18:58Speaker 5: to say yes, why would I say no? And yeah,
- 19:02Speaker 5: you just get older and realize I could have said
- 19:04Speaker 5: no to that, and you just got to like bet
- 19:06Speaker 5: on yourself. And I think that's where I am the
- 19:08Speaker 5: older that I've gotten, Like, yeah, we've I just feel
- 19:10Speaker 5: like I've really learned how to just trust the decisions
- 19:15Speaker 5: that I'm making and just trust like, look, I don't know,
- 19:18Speaker 5: I don't know what I'm doing. None of us know
- 19:21Speaker 5: exactly what we're doing, but I'm doing it and I'm
- 19:23Speaker 5: having a fun time. And you can save the judgment
- 19:27Speaker 5: for like people who genuinely like want feedback like.
- 19:32Speaker 3: Please like I but I don't know.
- 19:36Speaker 1: We'll be back with more from Rico Nasty and Lea
- 19:38Speaker 1: Rose after the break.
- 19:43Speaker 4: So when you were eighteen and you started getting checks
- 19:46Speaker 4: and money thrown at you, was it from for shows?
- 19:48Speaker 2: Like what was the bulk of the money opportunities coming from?
- 19:52Speaker 5: So I think like I started rapping and then yeah,
- 19:56Speaker 5: shows were a huge part, and then I started getting
- 20:03Speaker 5: record label offers, and then you go into publish deals.
- 20:10Speaker 5: Then you going into like you're just like entering big
- 20:15Speaker 5: money conversations, like conversations that it's like, let's take a second,
- 20:21Speaker 5: let's let's read this over.
- 20:23Speaker 3: I need a lawyer.
- 20:24Speaker 5: Yeah, And I think like, yeah, when I signed when
- 20:27Speaker 5: I signed a deal, I was nineteen, and yeah, having
- 20:31Speaker 5: having that much money so young is like, I'm so
- 20:37Speaker 5: blessed to be here today because I think at one
- 20:39Speaker 5: point everything in my life was so excessive, like I
- 20:42Speaker 5: couldn't just do something in a small way.
- 20:44Speaker 3: It was so grand. I had to spend so much money.
- 20:47Speaker 3: And it's like I don't know, like I don't know
- 20:50Speaker 3: if that's just being young, because like being young, like
- 20:53Speaker 3: I was like a flexoholic.
- 20:55Speaker 5: I love carrying big wags of cash and obviously seeing
- 20:57Speaker 5: the kids do it now, and I'm.
- 20:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel like you're good with your money though.
- 21:02Speaker 2: I saw you talking. It was an interview a while ago,
- 21:06Speaker 2: and you were saying like it seemed like you were
- 21:09Speaker 2: good with.
- 21:12Speaker 3: So good at my money now, so good at my money,
- 21:14Speaker 3: and you were.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Talking about being a minimalist.
- 21:16Speaker 5: That's what it was, Yes, because I I feel like
- 21:19Speaker 5: I became like an over consumer just just buying things,
- 21:26Speaker 5: buying things because of the the way people like, you know,
- 21:33Speaker 5: just falling into the I think it was during COVID,
- 21:36Speaker 5: really falling into the ads. Oh my god, oh, oh
- 21:40Speaker 5: my god, I have to have this, this so easy,
- 21:43Speaker 5: And then you look and you're like, what is this stuff?
- 21:49Speaker 3: Why do I have?
- 21:51Speaker 2: It's a problem?
- 21:52Speaker 5: What is this?
- 21:53Speaker 3: This is? This is stuff?
- 21:54Speaker 5: Doesn't even I mean I started really really taking the
- 21:58Speaker 5: time to like buy things that I actually like.
- 22:02Speaker 3: Now, does that mean that I have a closet the
- 22:05Speaker 3: size of this studio.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Of course not.
- 22:09Speaker 3: My closet is super small.
- 22:11Speaker 5: But everything in there I wear, and everything in there
- 22:14Speaker 5: I love, and everything in there is something I'm going
- 22:17Speaker 5: to have four years love.
- 22:18Speaker 3: Yes, I love this.
- 22:20Speaker 5: Being selective pays off eventually, cause in five years, I'm
- 22:25Speaker 5: going to have a closet that.
- 22:27Speaker 3: It's like, this is still the things that I like
- 22:31Speaker 3: and it's not a trendy yes way.
- 22:34Speaker 4: This is what I'm curious about with pop artists that
- 22:36Speaker 4: you observe from where you're at now, Artists that you've
- 22:40Speaker 4: seen go through different album cycles, different looks, but obviously
- 22:45Speaker 4: feel like they're.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Trying to cater to the masses.
- 22:50Speaker 3: Does that.
- 22:52Speaker 4: Like, do you feel sorry for them knowing that they're
- 22:55Speaker 4: probably an artist too, Like they want to be going
- 22:57Speaker 4: in a different direction, but they don't have the freedom
- 22:59Speaker 4: to do so. Like, have you had conversations with people
- 23:02Speaker 4: who have confided in you, like I wish I could.
- 23:04Speaker 3: Do what you do? No, I can just read it.
- 23:08Speaker 3: It's it's like you can tell when stuff isn't genuine.
- 23:11Speaker 5: Yeah, you can tell, especially if you're like a fan
- 23:14Speaker 5: of somebody and you've been following them and then all
- 23:16Speaker 5: of a sudden.
- 23:16Speaker 3: They're just like, what the hell when did you start
- 23:20Speaker 3: doing that?
- 23:21Speaker 5: Okay, but you know what, I think I think that
- 23:26Speaker 5: I look at it from a point of view of like, damn,
- 23:29Speaker 5: this is probably what they wanted to do, because I
- 23:33Speaker 5: don't think it could go both ways. And that's why
- 23:36Speaker 5: the music industry is so scary because in a lot
- 23:38Speaker 5: of cases, the bigger you get, the more power and
- 23:42Speaker 5: artistic control you have. It's like we trust in this
- 23:45Speaker 5: person's vision. But I think that comes with how much
- 23:49Speaker 5: you've spoken up for yourself leading up to this moment,
- 23:51Speaker 5: that you've become somewhat of a machine for the labels.
- 23:54Speaker 5: Like if you have not developed your voice at that time,
- 23:57Speaker 5: then yes, you can be used as a pawn, and
- 23:59Speaker 5: yes you can be switched into something that you never
- 24:02Speaker 5: were before, but you can also be away your whole
- 24:06Speaker 5: career and then get some thing and change, and that's
- 24:11Speaker 5: what you really wanted to do. So I can't really
- 24:14Speaker 5: look at it and be like on no hater shit, like, oh,
- 24:16Speaker 5: that's not really them, because it very much could be them.
- 24:20Speaker 3: That very much could be where they always want it
- 24:22Speaker 3: to be.
- 24:23Speaker 5: And I think a lot of times with artists it's
- 24:26Speaker 5: always it's always I think, but that's the art. That's
- 24:28Speaker 5: the art is conversation, and it's I think that's the
- 24:32Speaker 5: beauty in it is wanting to know did they do
- 24:34Speaker 5: this with intention?
- 24:35Speaker 3: Did they not? Did they mean to speak to my
- 24:37Speaker 3: soul in this way? Like it's you know, that's what
- 24:41Speaker 3: music is about.
- 24:42Speaker 4: Who's somebody who's been around for like ten plus years
- 24:46Speaker 4: who you're like, Okay, I like how they did it.
- 24:50Speaker 3: Huh. That's such a good question.
- 24:52Speaker 4: That is such a good question, Like somebody who you
- 24:55Speaker 4: really admire, do you feel like it's a true artist
- 24:59Speaker 4: and has a real stake in it?
- 25:04Speaker 3: I feel that way about Huh.
- 25:07Speaker 2: I have like I have.
- 25:09Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 25:10Speaker 5: I have one person that I'm thinking about in particular
- 25:14Speaker 5: that I feel like I don't want to say their name.
- 25:20Speaker 5: I think it'll do too much for their ego. I
- 25:23Speaker 5: think it'll do way too much for their ego.
- 25:26Speaker 3: It is a girl though. It is a girl though.
- 25:30Speaker 5: But watching her has shown me that anything is possible,
- 25:36Speaker 5: and watching her has shown me that I mean and
- 25:40Speaker 5: this is not a new artist. This is yeah, this
- 25:42Speaker 5: is somebody that I watched, Like I watched when I
- 25:45Speaker 5: was younger, when I was in high school.
- 25:47Speaker 3: I watched and I've seen the shit that.
- 25:48Speaker 5: They were on, and I've seen them get like be
- 25:51Speaker 5: like underrated, and I seen and always knew how good
- 25:56Speaker 5: they really were and kind of just always felt like
- 25:59Speaker 5: why they're not getting recognition as everybody else.
- 26:05Speaker 3: We did do a song together, and.
- 26:09Speaker 5: Yeah, just watching them, it's kind of both. It's both,
- 26:13Speaker 5: and that's the thing that sucks about being an artist.
- 26:15Speaker 5: It's like feeling like you want that to be you,
- 26:20Speaker 5: but you push those emotions to the side because you
- 26:23Speaker 5: can't help. But see how fire it is that somebody
- 26:25Speaker 5: like broke through what seems to be like a glass
- 26:29Speaker 5: box that they put us all in and you just
- 26:31Speaker 5: pop and then it's just done and you don't have
- 26:34Speaker 5: to play by the rules that anybody else play it for.
- 26:36Speaker 5: So I don't know if anybody can make out, but
- 26:41Speaker 5: I'm not gonna see them. And I do feel like,
- 26:46Speaker 5: what's actually like in the days recently, it feels like
- 26:51Speaker 5: they'd be trying to like pit us against each other.
- 26:53Speaker 5: But I do feel like that person was was there
- 26:56Speaker 5: for me and like such an early time in my
- 26:59Speaker 5: career that like that's impossible, like y'all could never do that,
- 27:02Speaker 5: but like, yeah, it is amazing seeing that, and it
- 27:05Speaker 5: is crazy saying you know, sometimes shit is like wait,
- 27:09Speaker 5: it looks like some shit I would it did, like yeah,
- 27:11Speaker 5: but I think that's Rick Rubin talks about that in
- 27:14Speaker 5: his book, like everybody gets these ideas who's acting on them,
- 27:19Speaker 5: though they'll go to somebody else and.
- 27:21Speaker 3: There's you know, there's nothing, there's nothing wrong with that.
- 27:26Speaker 3: It's like an idea of clouds. But I yeah, and
- 27:29Speaker 3: I think, yeah, you're pretty.
- 27:30Speaker 4: You know, I'm yeah, no, I know, but so okay,
- 27:33Speaker 4: So with the idea. So I know that he talks
- 27:35Speaker 4: about ideas sort of being in the ether. Yes, and
- 27:39Speaker 4: like an idea can strike more than one person, or
- 27:42Speaker 4: it can strike a bunch of people at the same
- 27:44Speaker 4: time in.
- 27:44Speaker 2: Different part of the world, does it?
- 27:46Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 27:47Speaker 2: Yes?
- 27:47Speaker 4: So do you where do you feel like your ideas
- 27:51Speaker 4: come from? Do you feel like they come from like
- 27:53Speaker 4: a higher power? Do they come just from you? Do
- 27:57Speaker 4: they come from your experiences? Like where do these ideas
- 28:00Speaker 4: in your mind come from?
- 28:01Speaker 5: I think they come from film movies, like movies that
- 28:05Speaker 5: I've watched in ways that I would like to be
- 28:08Speaker 5: portrayed if I in a movie. Oh, like I kind
- 28:11Speaker 5: of look at like little videos like that. I've always
- 28:13Speaker 5: loved scary movies, and I feel like I like things
- 28:17Speaker 5: that are weird and quirky and you just don't really
- 28:20Speaker 5: know where this is going. And like, yeah, you know,
- 28:22Speaker 5: the Napoleon Dynamite, the Conah random, you know, fear and
- 28:26Speaker 5: loading in Las Vegas, Like yeah, Mallorie, like natural born killers,
- 28:31Speaker 5: like you just never know what's going to happen. That's
- 28:33Speaker 5: the type of shit that I like. And I feel
- 28:35Speaker 5: like that that's like, you know, represented in my work.
- 28:37Speaker 5: I don't think my ideas come from.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Like like Jesus.
- 28:42Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't think my ideas are coming from like
- 28:44Speaker 5: a higher power because I think like some of the
- 28:47Speaker 5: stuff that I'm representing is a little bit too worldly
- 28:50Speaker 5: for God to have given me that message.
- 28:52Speaker 2: But when did you start getting into weird ship? Like
- 28:58Speaker 2: when did you know, like, oh, I might be it
- 29:00Speaker 2: is stuff that maybe my friends aren't into.
- 29:05Speaker 3: I was probably like when Tyler the Creator came out.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, how old were you.
- 29:12Speaker 3: Thirteen?
- 29:13Speaker 2: Uh huh?
- 29:14Speaker 5: I hate that roach And everybody was like, hell, oh
- 29:18Speaker 5: my god, what are you want to listen it is?
- 29:22Speaker 3: And I had like the shirt, the socks, the back back,
- 29:24Speaker 3: like I was a fan.
- 29:25Speaker 5: I was a fan, And yeah, that's when I knew
- 29:30Speaker 5: that I was a little bit off and like I
- 29:32Speaker 5: would just do I would do a lot of weird
- 29:34Speaker 5: stuff when I was a kid, So like what like
- 29:37Speaker 5: if it was a boy that I really liked, like
- 29:39Speaker 5: I would like bite him, Like I was just like
- 29:42Speaker 5: that type of kid like Maria. I got in trouble
- 29:45Speaker 5: today for biting someone, and it's like the boy that
- 29:48Speaker 5: I had a crush on. My mom was like, why
- 29:50Speaker 5: the fuck would you bite him? Like I've always just
- 29:54Speaker 5: been weird?
- 29:55Speaker 2: Like is your mom in the weird shit? Like is
- 29:57Speaker 2: there anyone in your family who is?
- 29:59Speaker 3: Both of my parents are wead as fuck.
- 30:01Speaker 5: Both of my parents are weird ass fuck Like I
- 30:03Speaker 5: don't even there's nothing normal about either one of them.
- 30:06Speaker 3: My dad is weird. He's a left brain person. He's
- 30:09Speaker 3: like fully creative, very very like, loves to just always
- 30:14Speaker 3: be doing something. He can't sit down for his to
- 30:16Speaker 3: save his life. My mother is like that, lady.
- 30:22Speaker 5: She has a wild imagination. My mom has a wild imagination,
- 30:25Speaker 5: and she will think of a scenario quick quick. She'll
- 30:28Speaker 5: be like, you know, you know what happened to Somer?
- 30:31Speaker 2: So I'm like, girl, is she usually right? Or is
- 30:34Speaker 2: it like left field?
- 30:35Speaker 1: No?
- 30:36Speaker 3: My mom's My mom is kind of like me where
- 30:39Speaker 3: she's like.
- 30:41Speaker 5: She be It's like the way she says stuff is wrong,
- 30:46Speaker 5: but what she's saying is right as fuck. Like yeah,
- 30:54Speaker 5: like she might say something really like why would you
- 30:57Speaker 5: say that? But actually, when you break it down, I'm like, man,
- 31:02Speaker 5: I wish I wish I had the boss to say that.
- 31:04Speaker 5: I think that comes with age though, like she just doesn't,
- 31:08Speaker 5: you know, it's so funny. I feel like a lot
- 31:09Speaker 5: of people will relate to this, But like, does anybody
- 31:11Speaker 5: have a parent who just don't give a fuck about
- 31:13Speaker 5: getting canceled? Like they just they be saying, like a
- 31:16Speaker 5: different generation, it's a different like yeah, you guys that
- 31:19Speaker 5: are like like guys, people that are like fifty right now,
- 31:22Speaker 5: they're the booth Like they don't give a fuck.
- 31:25Speaker 3: They don't give a fuck.
- 31:27Speaker 2: It's so true.
- 31:28Speaker 5: It's kind of insane because I feel like we like
- 31:31Speaker 5: are you know, we care? Yes, things, and y'all just
- 31:36Speaker 5: be like, yeah, damn, sissy.
- 31:38Speaker 2: We want boundaries. We want everyone to feel we want
- 31:42Speaker 2: to yeah.
- 31:45Speaker 5: Yeah. But I've learned that me and my mom are
- 31:48Speaker 5: actually very similar.
- 31:50Speaker 3: We're very very similar, just generations.
- 31:53Speaker 2: Of part Yes, how was it for you?
- 31:56Speaker 4: I imagine that since your experience as a young adult
- 32:00Speaker 4: and as an adult with work was so different than
- 32:03Speaker 4: your parents, Like, how are you able to figure out
- 32:08Speaker 4: what to do, like, did you have like a like
- 32:12Speaker 4: role model since your life was so different.
- 32:15Speaker 5: My dad helped me in the beginning stages to get
- 32:19Speaker 5: a lawyer, okay, and help me with nothing else.
- 32:21Speaker 3: He'd be like, all I know is that you need
- 32:25Speaker 3: and I remember that that was that was.
- 32:27Speaker 5: I mean, the fact of the matter is I don't
- 32:31Speaker 5: have anybody that really truly understands. My parents don't fully
- 32:36Speaker 5: understand the capacity of like they understand what I've done
- 32:43Speaker 5: with my life, and they love and respect my career, but.
- 32:49Speaker 3: They asked me all the time, like how the fuck
- 32:52Speaker 3: the juppool is all?
- 32:54Speaker 4: Are they still like you need to get another job
- 32:57Speaker 4: or do they feel confident that you can like support yourself?
- 33:00Speaker 2: Oh?
- 33:00Speaker 3: Yeah, no, my mom is always telling me to get
- 33:01Speaker 3: another job.
- 33:02Speaker 5: She oh, and and and you need that though, because yeah,
- 33:06Speaker 5: out to my mom, because my mom was like, yeah,
- 33:08Speaker 5: this shit is doing great, You're doing amazing. What else
- 33:12Speaker 5: do you want to do with yourself? Because the doors
- 33:13Speaker 5: are all opened around you. You can't just walk down
- 33:16Speaker 5: this one path forever. And then acting came in Yes show,
- 33:21Speaker 5: and even being on set for that has shown me
- 33:23Speaker 5: what a real job is like, because.
- 33:25Speaker 2: Wait, tell me about that. So you're gonna be in
- 33:28Speaker 2: what's it's called?
- 33:29Speaker 3: What's it called Margo's Got Money Troubles?
- 33:31Speaker 2: I love that.
- 33:32Speaker 5: Yes, and it's a book. So any wants to know
- 33:35Speaker 5: like what show is about because I can't.
- 33:39Speaker 3: I can't say too much.
- 33:40Speaker 5: But oh, it's like about wrestling OnlyFans. Oh it's a
- 33:45Speaker 5: lot though, and it's good. It's like somewhat of a.
- 33:48Speaker 3: Heavy topic, makes wait a little freaky stuff here and there.
- 33:51Speaker 3: Who knows.
- 33:52Speaker 2: Has it been a good experience.
- 33:55Speaker 3: Yeah, it's been amazing.
- 33:56Speaker 5: And everybody on set is just so sweet, full of
- 33:59Speaker 5: energy and makes you feel so comfortable, and it's like
- 34:02Speaker 5: before you know it, the shit just flies by.
- 34:04Speaker 3: But it is very different from being a rapper.
- 34:06Speaker 2: I mean, you know, are you good actor?
- 34:10Speaker 3: I would say, so shit, I mean to pull like
- 34:15Speaker 3: Apple TV A twenty four.
- 34:17Speaker 2: Yes, No, I know.
- 34:19Speaker 3: I think I'm pretty fucking good.
- 34:21Speaker 2: Anything A twenty four is good.
- 34:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 34:24Speaker 5: And I we had to do like a lot of
- 34:26Speaker 5: auditions and stuff like oh you did for anybody watching.
- 34:29Speaker 5: It's not like I just oh, I'm regoing nasty, give
- 34:31Speaker 5: me the roll. I had to like actually audition and
- 34:34Speaker 5: like go to callbacks, like you know, really do it?
- 34:38Speaker 5: And they don't give me special treatment on set. I
- 34:40Speaker 5: have to be there at six am, just like everybody
- 34:42Speaker 5: out all.
- 34:43Speaker 2: What are the days like?
- 34:45Speaker 3: Long but fun and every I don't know.
- 34:48Speaker 5: It's like, you know, they got the fake light in,
- 34:51Speaker 5: you know, in those Hollywood studios they have like the
- 34:53Speaker 5: fake lighting and shit like that.
- 34:54Speaker 3: So it doesn't ever feel like it's getting dark. So
- 34:56Speaker 3: you never, like a casino, yeah, you never know what
- 34:59Speaker 3: time it is until.
- 35:00Speaker 5: You walk outside, which again I love, and I love
- 35:03Speaker 5: getting this experience of a new job and learning new
- 35:07Speaker 5: things and being around new people and learning how things
- 35:09Speaker 5: are made because in the grand scheme of things, I
- 35:12Speaker 5: think that's why I got into making music, because I
- 35:14Speaker 5: love the way things are made and I love making
- 35:16Speaker 5: cool things.
- 35:18Speaker 1: One last break and be back with Rego Nasty.
- 35:25Speaker 2: So how do you know that the venues are getting bigger?
- 35:27Speaker 1: Like?
- 35:28Speaker 2: How big? When you go out on tour for Lethal,
- 35:31Speaker 2: how big will the venues be?
- 35:34Speaker 3: Ah bigger bigger than the last time?
- 35:37Speaker 5: And it's not to say that I'm doing fucking arenas
- 35:41Speaker 5: or anything, but it is.
- 35:44Speaker 3: It's a different space.
- 35:46Speaker 2: It must be so cool just to see the crowds
- 35:49Speaker 2: grow and change, like from your first like your first
- 35:52Speaker 2: or your second round of shows. How has the audience changed?
- 35:57Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, well I was doing like Sweet sixteens
- 36:00Speaker 3: and stuff, so oh were you really?
- 36:02Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 36:02Speaker 3: I did like a lot of Sweet sixteens and I
- 36:05Speaker 3: did high school. Like what was I doing?
- 36:09Speaker 5: Like pep rallies and shit? Like I'm like, I don't
- 36:13Speaker 5: even have a microphone.
- 36:14Speaker 2: I mean, okay, how did you know what to do
- 36:17Speaker 2: on stage?
- 36:20Speaker 3: You know, it's kind of like the.
- 36:21Speaker 5: Same thing that happens on set for a music video
- 36:24Speaker 5: where kind of just is like a like a blur,
- 36:28Speaker 5: like I really don't know what I'm doing when I'm
- 36:31Speaker 5: doing it, I just know, like I just know that
- 36:36Speaker 5: when it's done, I'll know when it's good. But like
- 36:39Speaker 5: when I'm doing it, I kind of feel like you
- 36:42Speaker 5: just have to get into character a little bit, and
- 36:44Speaker 5: that sometimes requires like zoning out.
- 36:46Speaker 3: So I feel like, yeah, in a sense, I like.
- 36:50Speaker 5: When I'm on stage, are about to go on stage,
- 36:53Speaker 5: it's like I get super quiet.
- 36:55Speaker 3: And then it's kind of like, Okay, it's good time.
- 36:59Speaker 5: And I think when I'm getting quiet, I'm kind of
- 37:01Speaker 5: just like praying for courage because I think that's all
- 37:04Speaker 5: that is just courage to like ignore perception for an hour,
- 37:11Speaker 5: because that's that's like scary, like getting up there and
- 37:13Speaker 5: people are perceiving you and they can think whatever they
- 37:16Speaker 5: want to think. That can be scary that I think
- 37:17Speaker 5: that's what causes people that have stage fright. But I
- 37:20Speaker 5: think like once I pray to like remove that and
- 37:23Speaker 5: kind of like blind me from perception for just an hour.
- 37:26Speaker 3: I don't need it all day. I'm sure people are
- 37:28Speaker 3: going to give their comments, but just for an hour.
- 37:31Speaker 3: You just get up there and it's just like a playground,
- 37:35Speaker 3: like the world is your oyster.
- 37:36Speaker 5: Like you're fading off of them, they're fading off of you,
- 37:40Speaker 5: and before you know it, it's three songs left and
- 37:44Speaker 5: fly back home.
- 37:46Speaker 2: Yeah, so is it perception? So sort of like judgment,
- 37:50Speaker 2: Like you don't want to feel judgment from the crowd.
- 37:55Speaker 2: Is that what you mean by perception?
- 37:57Speaker 5: Yeah, like judgment or just like I wouldn't say judgment
- 38:00Speaker 5: because they're damn sure not there.
- 38:02Speaker 3: They're not judging me. It's like this feeling of like
- 38:06Speaker 3: who they think I am.
- 38:08Speaker 5: You know, the screaming, the chanting, the like the hype
- 38:13Speaker 5: that I can hear backstage before I go on stage.
- 38:16Speaker 5: I feel like and that that's like perception in a
- 38:18Speaker 5: way because they think.
- 38:20Speaker 3: That I'm.
- 38:22Speaker 5: Whatever the hell they think, and I'm literally just a girl. Okay,
- 38:26Speaker 5: I'm literally just gonna tell me her before I come
- 38:28Speaker 5: on stage.
- 38:30Speaker 2: Yeah girl.
- 38:32Speaker 5: So I think that perception of like, oh, they think
- 38:34Speaker 5: you're they think you're amazing. You better show them why
- 38:37Speaker 5: you're faing, you know. So it's it's just that like
- 38:41Speaker 5: wanting to live live up to that and getting up
- 38:43Speaker 5: there and and not necessarily caring if you live up
- 38:46Speaker 5: to that. And it's just been like, well, this is
- 38:48Speaker 5: me and you're watching me, and I hope you have
- 38:50Speaker 5: a good time.
- 38:51Speaker 3: That's it.
- 38:52Speaker 5: Like I don't really try to fit into like, oh, well,
- 38:56Speaker 5: they think that I'm going to be like this, so
- 38:59Speaker 5: let me come out there and be like this, Like
- 39:00Speaker 5: it's not. I just am like they probably think I'm
- 39:03Speaker 5: going to be like this, but this is who I am.
- 39:06Speaker 5: I'm gonna be who I am. I'm gonna make jokes,
- 39:09Speaker 5: I'm going to take breaks in between the song. I'm
- 39:11Speaker 5: going to drink my water.
- 39:14Speaker 3: I'm going to.
- 39:16Speaker 2: Yeah, that's interesting.
- 39:18Speaker 4: So when you go to start a new project, do
- 39:20Speaker 4: you how do you deal with that perception and do
- 39:23Speaker 4: you feel like that has influenced the way that you
- 39:28Speaker 4: shape a new project.
- 39:30Speaker 5: I feel like worrying about perception and what people know
- 39:34Speaker 5: me as can it can pigeonhole you. They've been saying that,
- 39:39Speaker 5: I like that word, and I kind of my felt
- 39:42Speaker 5: like making work and comparing it to my last then
- 39:46Speaker 5: well should I keep doing this because this is what
- 39:49Speaker 5: they this is what they know and love and kind
- 39:52Speaker 5: of like finding finding yourself and finding your voice through
- 39:56Speaker 5: all that. So yeah, yeah, I think it's like a
- 39:58Speaker 5: double edged sword, Like, yes, I want to care. I
- 40:00Speaker 5: want to appeal to the fans that already have, the
- 40:03Speaker 5: fans that I've built.
- 40:04Speaker 3: I love y'all.
- 40:05Speaker 5: I want to make an album for you guys, But
- 40:07Speaker 5: what about all the stuff that I've learned learned and
- 40:09Speaker 5: what about the stuff that I like now?
- 40:12Speaker 3: Like why can't I share that? And that's where your
- 40:15Speaker 3: voice comes in, because it's like you can.
- 40:16Speaker 5: There is nothing wrong with waking up and wanting to
- 40:20Speaker 5: try something different, And me, of all people, I feel
- 40:23Speaker 5: like I'm very blessed to have the fans that I
- 40:24Speaker 5: have because they've never like they've never nonchalanted my different shit,
- 40:30Speaker 5: Like when I was doing hyper Pop, they liked it.
- 40:33Speaker 3: When I was doing Sugar Trap, they liked it. And
- 40:35Speaker 3: I feel like they've grown with me.
- 40:37Speaker 5: So yeah, I kind of was in that headspace for
- 40:40Speaker 5: a little bit of like, oh well, I don't know
- 40:42Speaker 5: if I can be different like this because that's what
- 40:44Speaker 5: they know me for. But then I had to look
- 40:46Speaker 5: at how they supported me before, and I'm like, this
- 40:49Speaker 5: is nothing.
- 40:49Speaker 3: They'll love it.
- 40:50Speaker 2: This is great.
- 40:52Speaker 4: Yeah, that's good to have that, to have that confidence
- 40:55Speaker 4: to move forward how you want to move This is
- 40:58Speaker 4: something I was curious about after watching a couple of
- 41:00Speaker 4: documentaries about you. Most of them were like early on
- 41:03Speaker 4: in your career, some like the Fader doc with you
- 41:06Speaker 4: on the Road. It's such a different lifestyle most people
- 41:09Speaker 4: are used to living. Was there anything in your early
- 41:13Speaker 4: life or anything that prepared you for that lifestyle change?
- 41:18Speaker 5: Yeah, my parents divorce, Maybe like having to stay at
- 41:25Speaker 5: somebody's house every weekend. Maybe like having like, you know,
- 41:31Speaker 5: my suitcase, my designated days.
- 41:32Speaker 3: Maybe that help. I don't know. Boarding school I went.
- 41:37Speaker 2: To Yeah, when did you go to board What age
- 41:39Speaker 2: were you when you went to boarding school.
- 41:40Speaker 5: I went to boarding school from the sixth grade to
- 41:42Speaker 5: the ninth grade. So I don't know how old I was,
- 41:44Speaker 5: in the sixth grade, probably twelve.
- 41:46Speaker 2: How did that come about? Like white boarding school?
- 41:51Speaker 5: My mom had seen my grades like significantly drop, but
- 41:54Speaker 5: I was very smart, and everybody knew that I was smart.
- 41:56Speaker 3: They just knew I wasn't trying because I just wasn't trying.
- 42:02Speaker 5: And then my mom had got like a paper in
- 42:06Speaker 5: the mail for like a school named the Seed School,
- 42:08Speaker 5: and a and like all this stuff. My mom filled
- 42:12Speaker 5: it out. We went to orientation, we went to the lottery.
- 42:14Speaker 5: They picked my number. It was forty girls, forty boys.
- 42:17Speaker 5: It's like one of those new school startups. So it's
- 42:19Speaker 5: not like an established like I don't want people to
- 42:22Speaker 5: get it confused. Like my mom paid for me to
- 42:24Speaker 5: go to boarding school. This was a free college prep
- 42:27Speaker 5: boarding school.
- 42:27Speaker 2: It was wow, like uniforms and everything everything.
- 42:31Speaker 3: My mom didn't pay a dime. We did not have
- 42:33Speaker 3: money to do shit like that.
- 42:34Speaker 5: So I remember it being just like everybody in my
- 42:38Speaker 5: family was like, bro, this is a crazy opportunity.
- 42:40Speaker 3: I can't believe it got in.
- 42:41Speaker 5: So this was like the first part of my life
- 42:45Speaker 5: where I said yes to something when I didn't really
- 42:48Speaker 5: want to. But I saw how it made everybody else react,
- 42:51Speaker 5: so I was like I gotta do it. During this
- 42:55Speaker 5: time too, I was very artistic, like I.
- 42:58Speaker 3: Love drawing, I love painting, I love doodling and shit
- 43:02Speaker 3: like that.
- 43:02Speaker 5: But I also was like playing soccer real good. So
- 43:05Speaker 5: like my mom was like, are you gonna start to
- 43:07Speaker 5: school and You're gonna play soccer?
- 43:09Speaker 3: In soccer?
- 43:10Speaker 5: And I'm hating it, Like the hours, Like I was
- 43:15Speaker 5: at school all day, get out, have lunch or snack
- 43:19Speaker 5: or whatever, study hall, and then you go to like
- 43:23Speaker 5: soccer practice, and then you go back to the dorms,
- 43:26Speaker 5: you have dinner. It's like very it's like so grown up,
- 43:31Speaker 5: very grown up. And I was doing that from six
- 43:32Speaker 5: to ninth grade. So if anybody wants to know how
- 43:34Speaker 5: my time management is great and how I have like
- 43:37Speaker 5: the ability to just like just get shit done, I
- 43:41Speaker 5: think it was that. I think it was that like
- 43:42Speaker 5: traveling on that campus at that young and then I
- 43:46Speaker 5: got expelled from that school because I.
- 43:49Speaker 3: Didn't want to be there.
- 43:50Speaker 2: Yeah, so on purpose, did you like make it happen,
- 43:54Speaker 2: like formulate a plan?
- 43:55Speaker 3: Ah, this is so crazy to say.
- 43:58Speaker 5: I didn't like formulate a plan, but I did do
- 44:01Speaker 5: something I actually went as far as going to the
- 44:04Speaker 5: principal and telling him, I'm like or her. I don't
- 44:07Speaker 5: remember who it was at the time, because it was
- 44:08Speaker 5: like a vice principal of real principal, like a whole
- 44:10Speaker 5: little board. And I remember telling them that I wanted
- 44:13Speaker 5: to go study a public school so that I could
- 44:17Speaker 5: see the real difference between the two. Oh, and they said, yeah,
- 44:21Speaker 5: so they sent me to my zone school, Flowers this
- 44:24Speaker 5: is my nextor they sent me to my zone school.
- 44:27Speaker 3: And I get there and.
- 44:31Speaker 5: Man, like they had drama, they had soccer, they had lacrosse,
- 44:36Speaker 5: they had volleyball, they had upper classmen.
- 44:39Speaker 3: They had a cafeteria, they.
- 44:41Speaker 5: Had they got to go home, they had phones, they
- 44:43Speaker 5: got to wear cool shoes, they got to have they
- 44:47Speaker 5: I could not go back to that boarding school, like
- 44:49Speaker 5: it almost had felt like I had seen too much.
- 44:53Speaker 3: And I was like there's no way, no, Like I
- 44:57Speaker 3: can't go here. I don't want to go here no more.
- 44:58Speaker 3: So my mom was like, hell, no, You're going back
- 45:00Speaker 3: to school.
- 45:01Speaker 5: And while this is crazy, while obviously studying the school
- 45:07Speaker 5: and all of that thing, like comparing the two, I
- 45:10Speaker 5: found out like, oh this is these are things that
- 45:13Speaker 5: would get you expelled and what it happened was I
- 45:17Speaker 5: I was like obsessed with like was Khalifa and whatnot.
- 45:21Speaker 3: So we were at the bus. My friends said they
- 45:23Speaker 3: had weed. I smoked weed with them.
- 45:25Speaker 5: We get back to school. The bus aide told we
- 45:28Speaker 5: all had the right statements. I kept my mouth shut.
- 45:32Speaker 5: This one girl, she rad it on everybody. Everybody was quiet.
- 45:37Speaker 5: She's the only person that told on everybody. We all
- 45:40Speaker 5: got expelled and I had to go to public school.
- 45:46Speaker 5: But that wanted to be the best thing ever because
- 45:48Speaker 5: I remember I got expelled and then I started going
- 45:50Speaker 5: to school and they said you got to Instagram and
- 45:53Speaker 5: I was like no, and I made my Instagram and
- 45:56Speaker 5: it was riko nasty.
- 45:57Speaker 1: Wow.
- 45:58Speaker 3: How funny is that?
- 45:59Speaker 2: What year is that?
- 46:01Speaker 3: That is two thousand and eleven, twenty eleven, twenty twelve.
- 46:05Speaker 1: Wow.
- 46:06Speaker 2: And then the mixtape was like two years later.
- 46:08Speaker 3: Your first shape was yeah, two thousand and thirteen.
- 46:11Speaker 2: Do you think you would have been able to do
- 46:13Speaker 2: a mixtape at the prep school?
- 46:15Speaker 5: No, there wasn't any Like it was an up and
- 46:19Speaker 5: coming school, so there really wasn't any programs. Like when
- 46:22Speaker 5: I was there from sixth to eighth grade, I had
- 46:25Speaker 5: an art teacher. Her name was Miss Labonte, and I
- 46:28Speaker 5: was like making art and we were selling it at
- 46:32Speaker 5: the end of the year and like art shows and
- 46:34Speaker 5: like she was my dog and my ninth grade year,
- 46:37Speaker 5: Miss Labonte didn't come back, so like, I fucking I
- 46:43Speaker 5: just didn't have a teacher that like I felt like
- 46:46Speaker 5: like cared about me or like had like a safe
- 46:49Speaker 5: space like at lunch, I could just go in there
- 46:51Speaker 5: and I could just hang out with her, listen to
- 46:54Speaker 5: music and shit. Like I didn't have nobody like that,
- 46:56Speaker 5: and I didn't really have that many friends because I
- 46:59Speaker 5: was weird.
- 46:59Speaker 3: So once she left, it was kind.
- 47:02Speaker 2: Of just like.
- 47:04Speaker 3: I don't want to do this.
- 47:06Speaker 2: Yeah that makes sense.
- 47:08Speaker 5: Yeah, the act just goes to show how important teachers
- 47:12Speaker 5: are because she was, I mean both art teachers at
- 47:19Speaker 5: that school and the school I ended up with Charles
- 47:22Speaker 5: Erbert Flowers, my art teacher, mister Hobbes. I don't think
- 47:27Speaker 5: I would have got through high school if it wasn't
- 47:28Speaker 5: for mister Hobbs. Like he was a safe space, like yeah,
- 47:32Speaker 5: go in there, draw and it like it didn't have
- 47:36Speaker 5: to be your period, it didn't have to be yes,
- 47:39Speaker 5: Like he knew when people needed to come in there
- 47:41Speaker 5: and just like.
- 47:43Speaker 3: Just chill.
- 47:44Speaker 2: Yeah we had that.
- 47:45Speaker 4: Yeah, we had that at my school with a photo teacher,
- 47:48Speaker 4: Miss Fanel, And there would always be kids like kids
- 47:51Speaker 4: that kind of like didn't fit in would go just
- 47:53Speaker 4: hang out in her classroom.
- 47:54Speaker 3: Yes, Like I just would be in there.
- 47:56Speaker 5: And if I didn't have a space like that, like
- 47:59Speaker 5: I feel like I would have gotten in so much
- 48:01Speaker 5: trouble and just been like skipping and I probably would
- 48:05Speaker 5: have graduated.
- 48:06Speaker 2: Like not have an outlet. Yeah, so did your mom?
- 48:10Speaker 2: So after you got kicked out of the school and
- 48:12Speaker 2: you started doing.
- 48:12Speaker 4: Music, did your mom think like, oh, like, was your
- 48:15Speaker 4: mom worried about how you were gonna turn out?
- 48:19Speaker 3: I hit it from my mom.
- 48:20Speaker 5: The only reason my mom knew that I made a
- 48:22Speaker 5: mixtape is because I got in trouble at.
- 48:26Speaker 3: I as bad as shit. I got in trouble at
- 48:29Speaker 3: school for not going to school for two no.
- 48:33Speaker 5: I got a phone call home from a teacher because
- 48:36Speaker 5: I skipped her class in particular for like two weeks straight.
- 48:41Speaker 3: I just didn't go.
- 48:43Speaker 5: Because her class was after lunch, and I would leave
- 48:46Speaker 5: at lunch to go make a song, and then I
- 48:48Speaker 5: would come back from my fourth period and then I
- 48:50Speaker 5: would go home. So, no, girl, I'm not about to
- 48:52Speaker 5: go to your class, like you teaching me how to
- 48:54Speaker 5: type on a keyboard. Why do I have to go
- 48:55Speaker 5: to your class.
- 48:56Speaker 3: I'm all to type on this keyboard faster than you. Yeah,
- 48:59Speaker 3: grew up on this keyboard. I know sit like the
- 49:02Speaker 3: back of my hand. Why do I have to be
- 49:03Speaker 3: in there? So yeah. She called my mom and my
- 49:06Speaker 3: mom was like, what in your what have you been doing?
- 49:10Speaker 3: I told her. I was like, yep, I was making
- 49:12Speaker 3: a mixtape and what she doing? You didn't give a
- 49:15Speaker 3: damn by no mixtape. She punished me. She was like,
- 49:16Speaker 3: you're on punishment. I'm like in the middle of my
- 49:19Speaker 3: rollout but naked rollout. Oh no I am. She didn't
- 49:27Speaker 3: take my phone, but I was on punishment.
- 49:28Speaker 5: I couldn't do anything, but like I was on Twitter
- 49:32Speaker 5: promoting and shooed out that project.
- 49:34Speaker 4: How did your Instagram? Like, when was the first time
- 49:36Speaker 4: that you're in you saw your like followers jump?
- 49:40Speaker 3: Oh that's so, that's such a good question. It was
- 49:43Speaker 3: like gradual.
- 49:45Speaker 4: I don't know, No, I remember you didn't have like
- 49:46Speaker 4: a one day you woke up like where you maybe
- 49:49Speaker 4: released something and then you had like I.
- 49:51Speaker 5: Was watching it the whole time, just move a little
- 49:53Speaker 5: by little, yeah, like but it was like when my
- 49:56Speaker 5: first two songs drop, Hay Arnold and I Carly and
- 50:00Speaker 5: then fucking Lil Yati had hopped on Hey Arnold, and
- 50:06Speaker 5: I remember just like I mean, even with my cloud,
- 50:09Speaker 5: I remember just sitting by the computer refreshing it and
- 50:12Speaker 5: watching it go up by the thousands. Yeah, I remember
- 50:14Speaker 5: watching my followers go up by the k's like it'd
- 50:17Speaker 5: be like, yeah, one point two point three point five.
- 50:21Speaker 5: I was watching it go up and go up, and
- 50:23Speaker 5: now I'm not gonna lie. My followers have been going
- 50:25Speaker 5: down for like five years, Like I mean, it was
- 50:27Speaker 5: just so many followers. But I kind of just be like,
- 50:31Speaker 5: I don't know, like I just I don't pay attention
- 50:33Speaker 5: to that shit anymore as much as I used to.
- 50:35Speaker 5: I used to be like like I didn't like my
- 50:38Speaker 5: team had to tell me that teeth Sucker was almost
- 50:40Speaker 5: at a million views.
- 50:41Speaker 2: I was like, what, that's so crazy, Like.
- 50:46Speaker 5: But I think there's freedom in that because it can
- 50:48Speaker 5: be kind of scary as an artist looking at like numbers,
- 50:51Speaker 5: it can make you like not want.
- 50:52Speaker 3: To do stuff.
- 50:53Speaker 4: Yes, so okay, so you said that your mom is
- 50:56Speaker 4: always telling you that you need to get like a
- 50:59Speaker 4: side job or whatever, which you know that's debatable, But
- 51:02Speaker 4: what would you do, like if you had to do
- 51:04Speaker 4: something more straight, what would it be.
- 51:07Speaker 5: I would probably like go to school old to like
- 51:10Speaker 5: understand how to produce like leather goods.
- 51:13Speaker 3: Oh, I know that's pretty random.
- 51:15Speaker 2: But produce leather goods.
- 51:18Speaker 3: Yeah, like like leather boots and jackets. Leather jackets.
- 51:22Speaker 2: Wow, so like actually craft them.
- 51:26Speaker 5: Yeah, I really love leather boots. And if anybody like
- 51:30Speaker 5: it is familiar with like my boot game, Like I
- 51:32Speaker 5: love boots. And something that I see myself doing when
- 51:36Speaker 5: I get older is actually like taking the time and
- 51:38Speaker 5: and and just you know, developing a boot.
- 51:41Speaker 2: That is not what I thought you were gonna say.
- 51:45Speaker 2: I thought you're gonna say produce music.
- 51:47Speaker 5: Now. No, when I get older, I want to do
- 51:51Speaker 5: something that's like lucrative, very lucrative, very like oh shit,
- 51:55Speaker 5: she does that, Like I don't want to be I
- 51:57Speaker 5: don't want to be fucking torquing on stage.
- 52:00Speaker 2: What's the cutoff? What age is it?
- 52:04Speaker 5: Oh?
- 52:04Speaker 2: You have three years?
- 52:05Speaker 1: No?
- 52:06Speaker 3: No, no, the cutoff, bro, there is no head off.
- 52:09Speaker 5: Because watching aircaba doun. Yeah, watching Bro, watching a lot
- 52:15Speaker 5: of the women in music, like they make their careers
- 52:18Speaker 5: last as long as they want them to, and so
- 52:21Speaker 5: I don't really think there is a limit on anything.
- 52:23Speaker 3: I just know, like Bro, I just don't.
- 52:26Speaker 5: I can't see myself torn at forty, Like I feel
- 52:28Speaker 5: like I'm gonna be so picky.
- 52:30Speaker 2: But what if it was private jet, like it was
- 52:32Speaker 2: made very easy for you.
- 52:35Speaker 3: I'm glad I kid and I can do it. Maybe
- 52:38Speaker 3: it's twenty more years.
- 52:40Speaker 2: Because I feel like the older you get, like you know,
- 52:43Speaker 2: you have to make certain changes, Like.
- 52:45Speaker 5: I don't know though, because when those look girl, when
- 52:48Speaker 5: you start taking a private jet, that means you're probably
- 52:51Speaker 5: doing two shows in a day.
- 52:52Speaker 6: So it's like there's reward, right, It's not free, it's
- 52:56Speaker 6: not free, no going in So yeah, I know, but
