Transcript
- 0:22Hey, we're park Road Carlos and Tom and we are just about to release
- 0:30our debut album, The Novel, probably released by now actually and yeah,
- 0:36we're park Road five piece band. We've got Angus who plays the guitar,
- 0:41Leo who plays guitar and vocals, and t K also who plays the drums
- 0:46who aren't here. Thanks for having us no oh boys, thanks for joining
- 0:50us today. Oh effect to be here. As you say, boys,
- 0:56Park Road will be releasing your debut album, The Novel This I made the
- 1:00twenty four. So how you feel like? He's excited, nervous, anxious,
- 1:04all of the above, anxious to get it out. It's been a
- 1:08long time coming, so I think we're all pretty anxious just to have it
- 1:14out there and show everyone. So what structual your mindset like going into a
- 1:19debut album, Like you put all your best stuff on there and throw it
- 1:23out. You're sort of a bit more thoughtful about it. You want to
- 1:26showcase different sides of a band, Like is there a thought process? I
- 1:32don't know it all. Sort of I feel like our process is quite like
- 1:37fluid. It's sort of like it just sort of we just write the songs
- 1:44and it just sort of texts on its own sort of characteristics and it sort
- 1:49of just ended up being what it is. There wasn't there was a thought
- 1:52process, but it wasn't like we want to do this like exactly. It
- 1:56was like, you know, we'll do what we want to do and then
- 2:00put the pieces together. Yeah, pretto much pressure on yourselves, which is
- 2:05a good thing. Yeah. Yeah, it kind of felt like the songs
- 2:09weren't. It wasn't like a concept album. It kind of just like the
- 2:14songs came came up and like we just kind of yeah, went along and
- 2:20they came out the right time and trusting the process kind of thing. The
- 2:24lover when they're playing works done. Yet, I do feel like the track
- 2:31listing and stuff does make for quite a like quite the experience. It's sort
- 2:38of even though they weren't really meant to be, like, you know,
- 2:46like a concept album whatever, I think we found a way to link them
- 2:51all together in a way that makes sense. So tell us a more about
- 2:55the album from a musical point of view and what you're going for with it.
- 3:05Mhmm. It's sort of just the a combination of everything that we've been
- 3:12doing previously. To be honest with the inclusion of some some new influences,
- 3:19but you know, rock and like aspects of pop and stuff. Yeah,
- 3:30lots of different stuff as cool. You've released the singles every Night, Save
- 3:35the Planet, Secrets, Ride and called me up. So would you say
- 3:38that they are a good sonic representation of what do you expect? Or are
- 3:40they just scratching the surface. There's definitely a bit of a different kind of
- 3:46vibe and the ones that haven't been released, I think there's probably a few
- 3:52more of slower ones or sad songs, little bit more intimate ones which didn't
- 3:59really feel like singles. And yeah, there's there's definitely some new sounds which
- 4:06we haven't really like explored yet on the unreleased ones, which I'm excited for
- 4:13people to hear. Hopefully they resonate with some sort of capacity. But yeah,
- 4:19definitely a bit of a bit of a bunch of different kind of vibes
- 4:25throughout the album, not just kind of one one sort of sound or one
- 4:30sort of style. Okay, can you collaborate on that big first pay?
- 4:34Like you said, the other songs that haven't been released have got a bit
- 4:36of a different vibe in a different field. So now so like how are
- 4:41they different. Well, there's one song which is kind of like just super
- 4:46stripped back kind of just guitar. There's a couple of those kind of with
- 4:49a bit of bass and just real kind of one. Yeah, I just
- 4:57wrote in my room and it was kind of like during the Aucland floods.
- 5:00And then there's one called Tonight I, which is a bit more how would
- 5:09you describe Tonight I. Tonight I is probably it's probably closest to Secrets in
- 5:18terms of like musical content. Yeah, but I'm excited for people to hear
- 5:24that one. Yeah. And then there's one that like we started out kind
- 5:30of adding instruments how we normally kind of do it, and then we ended
- 5:34up kind of just stripping everything back and Leo just went crazy on like the
- 5:40production side of things, and so it ended up sounding like a completely different
- 5:45song. And that's the title track the novel, which I think is really
- 5:50cool. Yeah, it's basically like ambient all the way through and then something
- 5:57happens in the end. Well, we like it when something happens that The
- 6:02press release says that the songs on the album are reminiscent of early the nineteen
- 6:06seventy five and Spacey Jane, So can you like write on that, Like,
- 6:11how are they similar? I'd say in terms of like the some of
- 6:21the guitar like melodies and some of the songwriting in terms of the nineteen seventy
- 6:30five And I think after we went on tour with Spacy Jane, and I
- 6:34think just like this songwriting is like super beautiful and simple, and I think
- 6:40we got really inspired by that, and just kind of how the instruments sound,
- 6:45you know, like really tasteful layers, and the guitar is kind of
- 6:50like not just going the whole time, having a bit more like yeah direction
- 6:59and like ful us to the not not having anything against the crashing guitars.
- 7:05They're great too. There's only so much of it. You can take this
- 7:13together to put the pressure on you bit boys. But I know this is
- 7:15only your debut album, but I have just given any thought to how your
- 7:19music's going to progress in the future, like you sort of have you got
- 7:23an idea where you want to go or are you just taking things as they
- 7:26come. Well, we've kind of started making some new stuff for album two,
- 7:35so I guess that's something that we have been thinking about a little bit.
- 7:41I feel like this debut album feels quite like the first. It feels
- 7:47like it feels like a debut album where everything's really fresh and like quite almost
- 7:51innocent in some ways. And I think maybe the album too, like having
- 7:57a bit more maturity on the I think Album two will definitely be a bit
- 8:03more mature and probably a bit more complex as you would expect from a second
- 8:09album. Yeah, but I feel like also a lot of it is still
- 8:13in the unknown and waiting to be figured out or found or somebody shut up
- 8:20in mind my own business. You can focus on this debut album now,
- 8:24you don't want tok too far in the future. Park Road toured Australia for
- 8:31the first time last year as part of the s x s W Sydney Festival.
- 8:35So how to have we received every the how the crowd get into it?
- 8:41It was? It was a bit of a weird one because it's it's
- 8:45like it's not quite like your typical it's like a industry sort of showcase thing.
- 8:52Okay, it was like a lot of like showcasing too, like industry
- 8:56professionals and that sort of thing. So the crowds were usually like quite small
- 9:03and like sort of like hand picked pretty much, right. We haven't really
- 9:09had the authentic touring experience in Australia yet, but in saying that we'll be
- 9:16going over there in like a week or something, so yeah, next Thursday.
- 9:20Yeah you are indeed, or that was my next person. You're coming
- 9:24back with the Ryon's and Blusher later this month, starting in Melbourne the thirty
- 9:28first of May and then you go through Hobart, Adelaide and Brisbane. Have
- 9:31finished Sydney on June the fifteenth, So tell us a bit about those shows
- 9:35and what people can expect from Park Roade over here. I think yeah,
- 9:41Like like Carlos Will, were just excited to get in front of some proper,
- 9:46uzzy crowds, and I feel like it's kind of cool because we're first
- 9:52up on the bill, so kind of got nothing to lose. Just gonna
- 9:58go over there and hopefully smash it and just give it, have a good
- 10:01time, and yeah, hopefully be able to come back soon. Just demand
- 10:09that you come back, mate, put the hopefully out and just say we're
- 10:11fucking coming back, whether you like it or not. That's good advice.
- 10:18Oh right, God's well, thanks very much for your time today. It's
