Latest / The Follow-On / Domesticated - WA and QLD fight out Shield thriller, Chris Rogers chats Victorian success, Cam Green delivers
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: It was one of the most star studded Sheffid Shield
- 0:02Speaker 1: rounds we've seen in recent memory. And at the end
- 0:05Speaker 1: of it all, Australia's Ashes squad was named, then changed
- 0:08Speaker 1: and changed again. Welcome to Domesticated. I'm justin Edwards Fox Crickets.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Nick Savage is alongside me.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Nick.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Big win for Victoria Revenue South Wales. But that blockbuster
- 0:17Speaker 1: Sheffood Shield round, it was soured a little bit by
- 0:20Speaker 1: some injuries for Josh Hazwood and to Sean Abbott.
- 0:23Speaker 3: At the end of that match, almost at the same time,
- 0:25Speaker 3: the two of them went off the field and never
- 0:27Speaker 3: came back.
- 0:28Speaker 2: They were sent for scans.
- 0:29Speaker 3: They didn't battle in the fourth innings, so Victoria only
- 0:31Speaker 3: had to take eight wickets.
- 0:33Speaker 2: In that three hundred run win.
- 0:34Speaker 3: And obviously the news has since come out that both
- 0:36Speaker 3: of them won't be available for that first Ashes Test,
- 0:39Speaker 3: so that pendulum is slightly swinging towards England for the
- 0:42Speaker 3: first Test.
- 0:42Speaker 2: But yeah, an exciting runer.
- 0:44Speaker 3: She had a lot of storylines to come out of it,
- 0:45Speaker 3: and yeah, Victoria New South Wales very one sided affair
- 0:48Speaker 3: at the end.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Yeah, three hundred runs. We'll talk more about that with
- 0:51Speaker 1: our guests later on, So Brendan Doggett looks like he's
- 0:55Speaker 1: gonna make his Test debut. That seems to be the
- 0:57Speaker 1: established pecking water. Michael Nisi's come into the squad, but
- 1:00Speaker 1: given that Doggett was named in the squad first, it
- 1:02Speaker 1: looks like there's a pecking order there and we expect
- 1:04Speaker 1: a Test debut for Brendan Doggett. The other question mark
- 1:07Speaker 1: about Australia's eleven was Cameron Green and how big a
- 1:10Speaker 1: role he could play with the ball. What was his
- 1:12Speaker 1: going to be role going to be in that first Test.
- 1:15Speaker 1: He's gone out and lacked ninety four for Western Australia
- 1:17Speaker 1: and Bold sixteen overs. Bold really well took a nice wicket.
- 1:21Speaker 1: That is just absolutely everything the Australian camp were wanting
- 1:24Speaker 1: to see.
- 1:24Speaker 3: Such an important game for Cameron because obviously it had
- 1:27Speaker 3: been a few weeks since he'd even contributed many runs
- 1:29Speaker 3: for WA, even going back to the West Indy. He's
- 1:32Speaker 3: got a bunch of starts without going on. But in
- 1:34Speaker 3: a great win for W eight he got those runs
- 1:36Speaker 3: and that spell from him the first innings in particular
- 1:38Speaker 3: was really exciting.
- 1:40Speaker 2: A bit wayward, a bit in accurate.
- 1:41Speaker 3: I think there was one beamer that flew past the
- 1:43Speaker 3: head of one of the Queensland batters, but on the
- 1:46Speaker 3: whole part was really impressive. He left a nice bruise
- 1:48Speaker 3: on Matthew Renshaw's arm and got a really important wicket.
- 1:51Speaker 3: So yeah, exactly what the Australians actors wanted to see
- 1:53Speaker 3: from him. They wanted to see fifteen overs. I think
- 1:55Speaker 3: he did about sixteen in the end, So yeah, he
- 1:58Speaker 3: looks now like a lock for that first sashes to turn.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely expects Cameron Green to be playing that first Test.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Where does it leave bow Webster. He probably had his
- 2:06Speaker 1: best week of shield cricket of the entire summer because
- 2:08Speaker 1: he was injured in the first part of the year.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Had took eight wickets, a career best Sheffid Shield bowling performance,
- 2:15Speaker 1: and then back to that with seventy eight in the
- 2:16Speaker 1: One Day Cup.
- 2:17Speaker 4: That was a little bit was it a bit too late?
- 2:20Speaker 1: You think it's it looks like Green's going to play
- 2:22Speaker 1: at six and there might not quite be room for
- 2:24Speaker 1: bow Webster.
- 2:25Speaker 3: I think the national selectors know what bo Webster can contribute.
- 2:28Speaker 3: He's done so over the past ten months in the
- 2:31Speaker 3: national side with a couple of really important knocks for Australia.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Yes, it's great to see him bowling again.
- 2:35Speaker 3: He obviously missed the first couple of Shield rounds with
- 2:37Speaker 3: a minor ankle injury. So he's bowling, he's taking wickets.
- 2:41Speaker 3: He's got Travis Head and Alex Carey in the same inning.
- 2:43Speaker 3: So great performance from him. Not the runs that we
- 2:46Speaker 3: would have loved to see from him in the red
- 2:48Speaker 3: ball cricket, but I think, as you mentioned, he backed
- 2:50Speaker 3: it up in the One Day Cup with a seventy
- 2:52Speaker 3: odd in a big win for the Tazzies, so I
- 2:54Speaker 3: think they're actually four in Zip the Chazzis. They're undefeated
- 2:57Speaker 3: in the One Day Cup, so keep an eye at
- 2:58Speaker 3: them later in the tournament they approach the final.
- 3:00Speaker 4: There.
- 3:01Speaker 3: In terms of the Test side, I think all this
- 3:03Speaker 3: injury news with a bowling attack, with Hazel out, sewnab
- 3:06Speaker 3: It out, Pat Cummins out, Australia might tend towards having
- 3:10Speaker 3: two or round us just to have that cover in
- 3:12Speaker 3: case God forbid another bowler goes down. And so we
- 3:15Speaker 3: saw Cameron Green batting at three over the winter. He
- 3:18Speaker 3: might keep that role. So Webster can keep his spot
- 3:21Speaker 3: at six with Martus Labushane opening.
- 3:23Speaker 2: We've spoken about this in the past, how we don't
- 3:25Speaker 2: love that balance.
- 3:26Speaker 3: We don't love Marnus opening, but just to have that cover,
- 3:29Speaker 3: the extra bowling cover, they might.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Lean towards that.
- 3:31Speaker 3: So because of Hazelwood's hamstring, bo Webster could be safe
- 3:34Speaker 3: for another game.
- 3:35Speaker 4: At least you could see that.
- 3:36Speaker 1: I think if you are going into a match looking
- 3:40Speaker 1: to get overs and wickets out of your sixth bowler,
- 3:43Speaker 1: you're probably.
- 3:44Speaker 4: In a bit of trouble.
- 3:44Speaker 1: If you're needing your sixth bowler, it's probably injury right.
- 3:48Speaker 1: If you're needing your sixth bowler to actually take wickets,
- 3:50Speaker 1: you're in a world of trouble. So I think I
- 3:53Speaker 1: don't think bo Webster's bowling. If Cameron Green's going to
- 3:56Speaker 1: be bowling ten to twelve overs an innings, he seems
- 3:59Speaker 1: to be a period bal at blow Webster. So I
- 4:01Speaker 1: don't think even though Webster took were those wickets, I'm
- 4:03Speaker 1: not sure it will be his bowling that gets him
- 4:06Speaker 1: in the team. I think I'm expecting a Jake Weather
- 4:09Speaker 1: or day Burton. I am expecting him to open the
- 4:11Speaker 1: batting Manus bat three and Green at six. I think
- 4:14Speaker 1: that's the more that's a confident approach from Australia knowing
- 4:17Speaker 1: that yep, we'll get the wickets. And the other thing
- 4:19Speaker 1: with the way England played their cricket is even if
- 4:22Speaker 1: they put four hundred and fifty on the board, they'll
- 4:24Speaker 1: do it in eighty overs. They don't keep the team
- 4:26Speaker 1: out in the field for two days.
- 4:27Speaker 4: That's a really good point.
- 4:28Speaker 3: No, absolutely, I think on the same page, I'd love
- 4:30Speaker 3: to see Weather all open. I've been calling for a
- 4:32Speaker 3: few years now for two specialist openers to be at
- 4:34Speaker 3: the top of the order rather than sacking through middle
- 4:37Speaker 3: order players and trying to reinvent them as openers.
- 4:39Speaker 2: And exactly right.
- 4:40Speaker 3: If Cameron Green trusts his body and the medical team
- 4:42Speaker 3: trust his body that he can serve as that fourth seama,
- 4:45Speaker 3: then that's fantastic. Are they still wrapping in a bit
- 4:48Speaker 3: of cotton wool? He's had one great game? Does that
- 4:50Speaker 3: mean he could do five Tests as an all rounder?
- 4:53Speaker 3: Not one hundred percent sure. I'd love to see whether
- 4:55Speaker 3: all open. I just feel like that might not happen
- 4:58Speaker 3: in Perth, as frustrating as that would be, but I
- 5:00Speaker 3: to wait and see. There's only four days until that
- 5:03Speaker 3: first Test now and no doubt we'll get a squad
- 5:04Speaker 3: or at least a starting eleven on a Thursday afternoon.
- 5:07Speaker 3: When Steve Steve Smith speaks to the.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Present, Michael Nissa being added to the squad, don't think
- 5:12Speaker 1: you'll play that first Test, but the second Test pink
- 5:15Speaker 1: ball in Brisbane. He's a pink ball specialist and he
- 5:18Speaker 1: also adds a little bit with the bat.
- 5:19Speaker 4: I suspect that's why.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Sewann Abbott was picked in the squad as well, because
- 5:22Speaker 1: he's a genuine bowling around it as he is Michael Nissa.
- 5:26Speaker 1: So if maybe they want to make a change to
- 5:29Speaker 1: that bowling attack and Cummins or Hazer would still not
- 5:31Speaker 1: right for that second Test, they could bring in Nissa
- 5:34Speaker 1: for that second Test as much to give him extra
- 5:37Speaker 1: batting as the extra bowling option.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Well, both of Michael NIE's tests to date have been
- 5:42Speaker 3: pink ball tests. I think a while ago now it's
- 5:44Speaker 3: been since he played. But you're absolutely right. Who's taken
- 5:46Speaker 3: more wickets at the Gabba over the past decade than
- 5:48Speaker 3: Michael Nissa a pink ball under lights. He's an absolute
- 5:52Speaker 3: weapon with the pink ball. He'd be fantastic. So if
- 5:54Speaker 3: they're going for that horses for courses, absolutely, Nissa wouldn't
- 5:57Speaker 3: be right for Perth. Dogger is definitely the likeful player
- 6:00Speaker 3: for that field. But in Brisbane, if there is a
- 6:03Speaker 3: little niggle, if they need to arrest someone, manage someone,
- 6:06Speaker 3: I think Thesa should absolutely come in. Stark is the
- 6:08Speaker 3: best in the world of the pink ball. I think regardless,
- 6:11Speaker 3: even if he's a bit sore, he'll be playing in
- 6:12Speaker 3: that second Test. But yeah, it needs to come in
- 6:14Speaker 3: for perhaps a Bowland, perhaps a dog It. I think
- 6:17Speaker 3: it's a live chance for sure.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I cannot wait. Third those first two Tests, first
- 6:20Speaker 1: one starting Friday. Now he had the Sheffield Shields in
- 6:24Speaker 1: that match where Green got the hundred between WA and Queensland,
- 6:27Speaker 1: there's nothing, There's not much in the life I love
- 6:29Speaker 1: more than a Sheffield Shield thriller when it comes down
- 6:32Speaker 1: to the last wicket, and it was an extraordinary finish.
- 6:35Speaker 1: WA were nine down, still needed twenty three runs and
- 6:39Speaker 1: Corey Rocacoli and Cameron Gannon got him home Rockacolie's pumping sixes.
- 6:43Speaker 1: It was extraordinary to watch.
- 6:45Speaker 3: What a finish to that game at the whackup heading
- 6:48Speaker 3: to that final forty five minutes, all four results were
- 6:51Speaker 3: still possible. There was still a live chance for all
- 6:53Speaker 3: of them, and certainly when that ninth wicket fell, I
- 6:55Speaker 3: kind of felt, Okay, Queensland, I've got this. You have
- 6:57Speaker 3: to go back a day or so to win Western
- 6:59Speaker 3: Australia to clared their first innings about sixty eight runs behind.
- 7:03Speaker 3: They were still behind by quite a margin and to
- 7:05Speaker 3: keep that chance of getting a resolt, they declared behind.
- 7:08Speaker 3: So brave move from the hosts. It paid off massively
- 7:11Speaker 3: thanks to Rockacholie, who earlier took four wickets.
- 7:14Speaker 2: For not many in a pretty damaging spell.
- 7:15Speaker 3: He ran through that low order, bowled out the Queenslanders
- 7:18Speaker 3: and then played it, as you said, a massive role
- 7:20Speaker 3: in the run chase, one of the all time classics.
- 7:22Speaker 3: I mean, TASMANI have been involved in a couple of
- 7:24Speaker 3: bangers recently over the last twelve to eighteen months, but
- 7:27Speaker 3: this goes right at the top of the Q. I
- 7:29Speaker 3: think that was a really special performance from WA who
- 7:32Speaker 3: hadn't had the best start to their Shield season as well.
- 7:34Speaker 3: So yeah, hopefully this gets them back on track. A
- 7:36Speaker 3: really talented squad and yeah, what a win, what a
- 7:39Speaker 3: highlight fantastic.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Corey Rocacholi finishing with figures of five for forty seven
- 7:42Speaker 1: as well as his runs. Thinking he potentially is now
- 7:46Speaker 1: ahead of Todd Murphy or certainly in the conversation alongside
- 7:50Speaker 1: Todd Murphy if Nathan Lyne was to be injured for
- 7:53Speaker 1: as soon as this summer. They're definitely in the conversation
- 7:56Speaker 1: for Australia's next trip to India, which is in about
- 7:58Speaker 1: fourteen months time. But if line was to go down,
- 8:02Speaker 1: especially on a bouncy pitch, Queer Rocacolie could make a
- 8:05Speaker 1: Test debut this time.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Yeah, we'll speaking about this off air in that he
- 8:08Speaker 3: has the skill set for Australian pitches. He's a tour release,
- 8:10Speaker 3: gets a lot of dip and bounce on the Australian decks,
- 8:13Speaker 3: so I think he's a very strong chance of coming in.
- 8:15Speaker 3: I feel like maybe Matt Cooman, who is contracted and
- 8:18Speaker 3: has done really well in the Test side.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Probably will still be favored.
- 8:23Speaker 3: Australia might go for four fastballs again as they did
- 8:25Speaker 3: in Kingston a few months ago, which paid off roy All.
- 8:28Speaker 3: They brought up the windows for twenty nine. But I
- 8:30Speaker 3: see if they want to like for like in Australia,
- 8:32Speaker 3: Rocketcolie is a really good shout twenty twenty seven in India.
- 8:36Speaker 3: No doubt they'll be Koneman, they'll be Murphy. We both
- 8:39Speaker 3: love to see Mitch Swepson there as well. But yeah,
- 8:41Speaker 3: there's a very strong chance that if Line God forbid
- 8:44Speaker 3: has an injury, it's Rockecolie time.
- 8:46Speaker 2: It would be really cool to see what.
- 8:47Speaker 1: A fantastic finish it was to that game. And a
- 8:49Speaker 1: quick little note as well. I like the new rules
- 8:52Speaker 1: that were brought in a few years ago. So first
- 8:55Speaker 1: innings points are not everything in Sheffield shield matches, which
- 8:58Speaker 1: allows WA to clear behind and get the result at
- 9:02Speaker 1: the end. So the new rules, they are more complex
- 9:05Speaker 1: and I am not even sure that I understand them completely,
- 9:08Speaker 1: but they do allow for this to happen. The other
- 9:10Speaker 1: big talking point out of that game was Matt Renshaw
- 9:12Speaker 1: scoring one hundred. You feel like his ashes chances were
- 9:16Speaker 1: hurt by being picked for Australia, which is sort of
- 9:19Speaker 1: a funny thing to say. But he couldn't play the
- 9:21Speaker 1: shield matches that say Manus Labushan could play. He was
- 9:24Speaker 1: playing white Pool cricket for Australia did pretty well. He
- 9:27Speaker 1: gets the one hundred now is a little bit too
- 9:32Speaker 1: late for him. Do you think where does he sit
- 9:33Speaker 1: in the pecking order.
- 9:34Speaker 3: He's still in the twenty nine. He's still probably in
- 9:37Speaker 3: his prime years, I suppose. When people talk about but
- 9:39Speaker 3: as they say their late twenties, early thirties, was mc
- 9:43Speaker 3: quajh is not far from retirement. We expect it to
- 9:46Speaker 3: come within the next twelve months or so, so there
- 9:48Speaker 3: will be a vacancy there very very soon. Whether all
- 9:51Speaker 3: it's preferred for this series because he compliments Kauwaja quite
- 9:54Speaker 3: a bit. I was just spoken about in past episodes
- 9:56Speaker 3: of this podcast. But Matthew Renshaw is I a good
- 10:00Speaker 3: chance of taking that Kawaja spot. He's probably up against
- 10:02Speaker 3: a couple of young guns in Campbell Kelloway and Sam
- 10:05Speaker 3: Constance will also be buying for that. But if he
- 10:08Speaker 3: backs it up next week and the following week with
- 10:10Speaker 3: more shield hundreds, maybe even puts a little bit of
- 10:12Speaker 3: pressure on Kuwaja in this series. If Kauwaja starts poorly,
- 10:16Speaker 3: there's every chance of Australia making a change and maybe
- 10:18Speaker 3: giving him a tap on the shoulder.
- 10:19Speaker 2: So Renchell's not far off.
- 10:21Speaker 3: All we saw Kawaja come back and revive his test
- 10:23Speaker 3: career at age thirty five and look how amazing he's
- 10:26Speaker 3: been over the last four years. Renschall still has a long,
- 10:29Speaker 3: long amount of time ahead of him to revive his
- 10:30Speaker 3: test career as well.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Yeah, Usmond's not saying it. There is sort of a
- 10:34Speaker 1: thinking that this would be Kouwaja's last summer. He's certainly
- 10:36Speaker 1: not saying it. He's taking it one series at a time,
- 10:39Speaker 1: but it's going to be he won't be in the
- 10:42Speaker 1: next Ashes in England, for example, so that spot will
- 10:45Speaker 1: be available and whether it goes to Renshaw or a
- 10:48Speaker 1: guy like Campbell Kellaway. But that's the openers. We've been
- 10:51Speaker 1: talking about this since David WARN's retirement. The openers are
- 10:53Speaker 1: the most interesting part of the future of Australian cricket
- 10:56Speaker 1: because is it Constance is the guy like Kellaway who
- 10:59Speaker 1: will speak more of There's Renser as well in maybe.
- 11:03Speaker 4: You've got an opener?
- 11:04Speaker 1: Is there anybody outside the Ashes squads that you think
- 11:08Speaker 1: could be a factor in the series. The last time
- 11:10Speaker 1: England were here, Australia Public played six quicks, Joy Richardson
- 11:13Speaker 1: and Michael Nissa and Scott Boland who he went really
- 11:16Speaker 1: talking about back then made this amazing debut. Do you
- 11:18Speaker 1: think there's anybody outside of the squad at the moment
- 11:21Speaker 1: who could be a facted later in the series.
- 11:23Speaker 2: I think you just mentioned one of them.
- 11:24Speaker 3: Ji Richardson, I could see playing a big role towards
- 11:27Speaker 3: the back end of the series.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Australias.
- 11:28Speaker 3: We haven't even had a first test yet, but half
- 11:30Speaker 3: Australia's bowling attack is wounded, sore, is in the casualty ward.
- 11:34Speaker 3: Those bowling stocks are going to be extended and pushed
- 11:36Speaker 3: even further over the next few weeks and there's a
- 11:39Speaker 3: chance for Ji Richardson to maybe.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Be parachuted into that squad.
- 11:42Speaker 3: Jie richard was just named in the crick Australia eleven
- 11:45Speaker 3: to play I think the England Lions at the Gabba,
- 11:48Speaker 3: so he'll be involved in that game, a multi day
- 11:49Speaker 3: game if he can prove his fitness there, and then
- 11:52Speaker 3: we think in round six player shield game for WA
- 11:56Speaker 3: and he gets through that with strong performances, his body's fine,
- 12:00Speaker 3: Maybe at the back end of the Ashes he could
- 12:01Speaker 3: come in and play a massive role in Melbourne or Sydney.
- 12:04Speaker 3: So maybe keep half on how he's going into the
- 12:07Speaker 3: domestic formats because I mean, God, for a bit, we
- 12:10Speaker 3: lose Josh Haswer for the series, we lose Cummins for
- 12:12Speaker 3: the series, there's another injury. They're going to really stretch
- 12:15Speaker 3: those bowling stocks. And Joe Rigson he's a gun. We
- 12:18Speaker 3: all know how great he is. He just needs to
- 12:20Speaker 3: keep his body together. So yeah, he's my choice.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm very excited to see Joe Richardson back bowling
- 12:25Speaker 1: with a red Bull.
- 12:26Speaker 4: Same.
- 12:26Speaker 1: I'm sure we'll play a lot for the per scorches
- 12:28Speaker 1: over the Big Bash. My guy outside the squad who
- 12:31Speaker 1: I think could be a factor is Campbell Kellaway. So
- 12:33Speaker 1: I think, as we mentioned with Kouwaja, say, for example,
- 12:36Speaker 1: worst case scenario, Australia are two kneel down after two
- 12:39Speaker 1: tests and Kowaj's got four scores under ten. I think
- 12:42Speaker 1: they'll they'll have to make a change there, and I
- 12:44Speaker 1: don't think I think they're committed to taking a longer
- 12:47Speaker 1: approach with Constace. So it would be down to Renshaw
- 12:50Speaker 1: or Kellaway, who started the Shield summer really strongly, got
- 12:53Speaker 1: the Big Hunter and got a proper working over with
- 12:55Speaker 1: Mitchell Stark. We'll talk about him a little bit more
- 12:57Speaker 1: with our guest coming up, we speak to Victorian coach
- 13:00Speaker 1: Chris Rogers, with Victoria sitting pretty on top of the
- 13:04Speaker 1: Sheffield Shield table well with.
- 13:06Speaker 4: Four wins from four games.
- 13:07Speaker 1: Victoria couldn't be going much better in the Sheffield Shield
- 13:10Speaker 1: at the moment, and their coach Chris Rodgers joins us, Chris,
- 13:13Speaker 1: what a fantastic win it was for you against.
- 13:16Speaker 4: New South Wales? A victory by three hundred runs.
- 13:20Speaker 5: Yeah, hello, guys, Yeah it was. It was a fantastic win.
- 13:25Speaker 5: I think a lot of things lined up for us,
- 13:27Speaker 5: but you know, to go and play aside with so
- 13:30Speaker 5: many world class players and to beat them so comprehensively,
- 13:34Speaker 5: you know, I thought that was absolutely brilliant.
- 13:36Speaker 6: And gives our group a lot of belief.
- 13:39Speaker 3: Chris obviously has mentioned before four wins in a rows
- 13:41Speaker 3: can the perfect start. It feels like this Victorian squad
- 13:44Speaker 3: has the perfect mix of experienced players like Pete Hansk
- 13:48Speaker 3: and Marcus Harris and a really exciting crop of younger
- 13:50Speaker 3: players who are really starting to find their feet in
- 13:52Speaker 3: domestic career. Is that how you see this squad at
- 13:54Speaker 3: the moment as well?
- 13:56Speaker 5: Yeah, Victoria made a bit of a decision a few
- 13:58Speaker 5: years back to to really try and get more players
- 14:02Speaker 5: into the test team and develop born and bred Victorians,
- 14:06Speaker 5: and it's always going to take a while, but we're
- 14:11Speaker 5: starting to see the fruits of that labor. And even
- 14:14Speaker 5: with you know, we're picking three young batters in Peak,
- 14:21Speaker 5: Kellaway and Dixon, you know that that bodes well for
- 14:26Speaker 5: the future. But that's equally balanced out well with having
- 14:29Speaker 5: the likes of Bowl and Harris enhanced him to kind
- 14:32Speaker 5: of to almost you know, coach them along the way
- 14:35Speaker 5: as well. So you know, we feel we've got a
- 14:37Speaker 5: really good mix a lot of players who are coming
- 14:40Speaker 5: into their mid twenties as well, and hopefully they're not
- 14:44Speaker 5: far away from international recognition.
- 14:47Speaker 1: One of those young batters, Campbell Kellaway, scored an excellent
- 14:50Speaker 1: hundred in his previous year game. In this most recent one,
- 14:53Speaker 1: he's got a proper working over from Mitchell Stark, but
- 14:56Speaker 1: did really well, scored a half century when he was
- 14:58Speaker 1: getting that working over from Mitch Stark. Are you sitting
- 15:01Speaker 1: in the crowd going, well, I don't like, really like
- 15:03Speaker 1: my player getting worked over like this, but this is
- 15:06Speaker 1: going to be so good for him.
- 15:07Speaker 4: He's going to learn so much from this.
- 15:11Speaker 5: Yeah, I probably wasn't thinking now, I was probably thinking
- 15:13Speaker 5: how good is this? You know from my own personal experience,
- 15:18Speaker 5: when you go and play international cricket, the balls are faster,
- 15:21Speaker 5: that they're taller, and they present different challenges, so you
- 15:26Speaker 5: know you want to be well prepared for what's to come.
- 15:29Speaker 6: And for Campbell, he wouldn't have faced that challenge before.
- 15:33Speaker 5: So you know, to get into that situation where you
- 15:36Speaker 5: realize perhaps you're not in the best positions and you
- 15:38Speaker 5: don't have the game just to get through that just yet,
- 15:42Speaker 5: that's that's gold because then you can go away and
- 15:45Speaker 5: work on it and.
- 15:47Speaker 6: Figure a few things out.
- 15:48Speaker 5: So you know, I'm looking at what Campbell's get going
- 15:52Speaker 5: through at the moment.
- 15:53Speaker 6: I think even first game he.
- 15:57Speaker 5: Found the out he was out to to outside edges,
- 16:01Speaker 5: he went away, work to the and the next next
- 16:04Speaker 5: day and he got two inside edges he played on.
- 16:06Speaker 5: So he's working through these these little fine things in
- 16:10Speaker 5: his game, and I think that that's you know, that's
- 16:12Speaker 5: going to set him up well once again for what's
- 16:15Speaker 5: to come.
- 16:16Speaker 3: Chris, you said after the match that you were confident
- 16:18Speaker 3: that when it was won, Kwaja does retire that Campbell
- 16:21Speaker 3: Callaway is a contender to potentially take over that spot
- 16:24Speaker 3: in the test side. That moment could come in the
- 16:27Speaker 3: next six to twelve months. We don't know for certain
- 16:29Speaker 3: when Kawaja is going to hang up the boots, But
- 16:31Speaker 3: do you feel confident that even if, for potentially this
- 16:34Speaker 3: summer and optually comes up for Campbell, that he's really
- 16:36Speaker 3: ready to take on the likes of Mark Wood, Archer
- 16:39Speaker 3: and in the next couple of years some other fast ballers.
- 16:43Speaker 6: Yeah, I said that.
- 16:45Speaker 5: I've you know, I've been watching Campbell carefully now for
- 16:49Speaker 5: a while. You know, I get to sometimes have the
- 16:52Speaker 5: best seat in the house because you know, you're watching
- 16:54Speaker 5: him working day in, day out, and then.
- 16:57Speaker 6: Go in and see what he's learning out in the middle.
- 17:02Speaker 5: But I'm seeing a young man with a game that's
- 17:06Speaker 5: that's going to stand up in international cricket. You know,
- 17:08Speaker 5: the way he lines the ball up. I mean we
- 17:11Speaker 5: stood at we were kind of sitting at a mid
- 17:13Speaker 5: off angle for Campbell facing Mitch Stark, and Starkey was
- 17:17Speaker 5: swinging the ball away and his bat was coming perfectly
- 17:21Speaker 5: along the line to cover that movement.
- 17:22Speaker 6: So they're the kind of things that.
- 17:24Speaker 5: I get to see and from that, I, you know,
- 17:27Speaker 5: I believe he's got that game to handle, you know,
- 17:30Speaker 5: the best.
- 17:31Speaker 6: Bowl in the world.
- 17:32Speaker 5: So I know he's young, there's a long way to go,
- 17:35Speaker 5: but you know, it wouldn't surprise me if he did
- 17:39Speaker 5: get to go early and he had some early success
- 17:41Speaker 5: as well, so you know, I'm confident that he's going
- 17:44Speaker 5: to have a good career for Australia.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Chris, can you talk us through Campbell's move to opening
- 17:49Speaker 1: at the top of the audit? He hadn't done a
- 17:51Speaker 1: whole lot of that before he plaid for Victoria. Was
- 17:53Speaker 1: that your idea? Did you broach that with him as
- 17:56Speaker 1: you know one former opener you saw that potential in him?
- 17:59Speaker 4: Or was that his idea?
- 18:01Speaker 3: Uh?
- 18:02Speaker 5: No, I mean we we we had hoped that Will
- 18:06Speaker 5: Pokotski was going to be the one who who would
- 18:10Speaker 5: you know, do great things for for Australia at the
- 18:12Speaker 5: top of the order. And then when you know it
- 18:16Speaker 5: played out the way it did with Will, we knew
- 18:20Speaker 5: there was another opportunity. So you know, we made some
- 18:23Speaker 5: decisions in the background and then and then spoke to
- 18:25Speaker 5: Campbell about you know, here's here's the opportunity. You know,
- 18:28Speaker 5: if you look at that Australian side, and at the
- 18:31Speaker 5: time you were probably thinking Marnus and Smith are going
- 18:35Speaker 5: to be in three and four for for a little
- 18:36Speaker 5: while to come, and even if Smith retires, that's that's
- 18:39Speaker 5: there's probably some others who were lining up for that position.
- 18:42Speaker 6: So where's the opportunity.
- 18:44Speaker 5: It's it's at the top when when Usmand retires. So yeah,
- 18:49Speaker 5: we had that that kind of conversation, and you know
- 18:52Speaker 5: it was it was a bit of a challenge for
- 18:54Speaker 5: him early, but but since I think you know, there
- 18:58Speaker 5: was a hundred thanks Queensland at the Gabba and then
- 19:03Speaker 5: even the hundred he got at the Whacker last game
- 19:06Speaker 5: of the year against Joel Paris, who usually eats up
- 19:09Speaker 5: left handed battles for fun at the Whacker. You know
- 19:11Speaker 5: that that kind of signaled a what a really good
- 19:14Speaker 5: player is.
- 19:15Speaker 6: So yeah, that's there's.
- 19:17Speaker 5: Been some good conversations in the background and you know,
- 19:21Speaker 5: we think he's already made opener.
- 19:24Speaker 3: Another one of the exciting younger players in the Victorian
- 19:27Speaker 3: side is Fergus O'Neil, who has been pretty much perfect
- 19:30Speaker 3: over the last twenty four months in the Shield side.
- 19:33Speaker 3: He has murmurs of potentially a test spot coming up
- 19:35Speaker 3: in the next couple of years with the Australian side
- 19:38Speaker 3: obviously approaching the twilet of their careers, what's going to
- 19:40Speaker 3: be the challenge for him and converting his bowling from
- 19:43Speaker 3: the domestics set up to international crek because obviously that's
- 19:46Speaker 3: a big step up for any fastballer.
- 19:49Speaker 5: Yeah, I think, you know, that challenge for Fergus is
- 19:54Speaker 5: always his perception that he's just not fast enough, you know,
- 19:58Speaker 5: he and on the flatter wickets he might get found out.
- 20:02Speaker 6: But you know, I look at Vernon Falander and the
- 20:06Speaker 6: success he had.
- 20:08Speaker 5: And the style of bowling he had, and that's very
- 20:11Speaker 5: similar to Fergus O'Neill. And even from my experience playing
- 20:15Speaker 5: in England, you know and seeing those kind of bowlers
- 20:18Speaker 5: who are high skill, maybe not the fastest, but they
- 20:22Speaker 5: would test your defense pretty much every ball. You know,
- 20:26Speaker 5: there's a lot of value in those guys. So you know,
- 20:29Speaker 5: I look at the Vernon Falander model and think, well,
- 20:32Speaker 5: if he can have success, why can't Fergus. And even
- 20:37Speaker 5: even his ability to bowl for long spells day in
- 20:42Speaker 5: day out, I think that that stands out amongst the
- 20:44Speaker 5: croper bowlers who we're seeing a lot of injuries from
- 20:47Speaker 5: as well, so you know, his resilience is going to
- 20:50Speaker 5: be important to his armory as well. So yeah, I
- 20:54Speaker 5: think he's got all the tools he needs to go
- 20:57Speaker 5: on and have a good international career. I just think
- 21:00Speaker 5: he needs that chance. But I think if he gets
- 21:02Speaker 5: that chance, he's going to show people just how good
- 21:04Speaker 5: he is.
- 21:04Speaker 1: You know, the Vernon Filanda comparison is a good one, Chris,
- 21:07Speaker 1: especially with Australia going to South Africa in October next
- 21:10Speaker 1: year for a test tour. Were you're disappointed that the
- 21:12Speaker 1: Australian selectors opted for Michael Nissa when Josh Hazerward was injured,
- 21:16Speaker 1: rather than giving Fergus an opportunity to at least be
- 21:19Speaker 1: in the squad.
- 21:22Speaker 5: Yes, I mean I was just because you know, like
- 21:25Speaker 5: I like it to be on the journey with Fergus
- 21:29Speaker 5: as well, and you know, you want to see you
- 21:33Speaker 5: want to see these players that you work with have success.
- 21:36Speaker 5: So yeah, there's a bit of disappointment from that aspect.
- 21:41Speaker 5: But equally, you know, I think all the players in
- 21:45Speaker 5: domestic first class know how good ness is and you know,
- 21:51Speaker 5: probably don't begrudge him this opportunity as well.
- 21:53Speaker 6: But I think Fergus.
- 21:54Speaker 5: Knows that you know, he's going to have to work
- 21:56Speaker 5: hard for this opportunity, but you know he'll be ready
- 22:00Speaker 5: to go once it comes.
- 22:01Speaker 3: You mentioned before that Fergus has the skill set to
- 22:04Speaker 3: potentially be really dangerous in the United Kingdom in particular.
- 22:07Speaker 3: Would you like to encourage him to hopefully go back
- 22:09Speaker 3: and play some more county cricket if the opportunity comes up.
- 22:12Speaker 3: He did exceptionally well for his brief stint a few
- 22:15Speaker 3: months ago in the UK.
- 22:19Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 22:19Speaker 5: Well, I think he's signed a contractor anyway, so I
- 22:24Speaker 5: don't think we have much choice in that.
- 22:26Speaker 6: But no, no, we're very supportive of all our.
- 22:29Speaker 5: Players, you know, taking these opportunities and and and he
- 22:33Speaker 5: tried to get better. And I think for him to
- 22:35Speaker 5: go over to England work with some of the bowling
- 22:39Speaker 5: coaches and see the style of cricket, I think that that's.
- 22:42Speaker 6: Going to be really good for him as well.
- 22:44Speaker 5: And you know, he came back raving from his experience
- 22:46Speaker 5: over with notting him shere early on and just how
- 22:50Speaker 5: much he learned even working with a bass I think,
- 22:54Speaker 5: you know, he had some really good conversations with him,
- 22:57Speaker 5: who's another bowler in a similar type of mold.
- 23:00Speaker 6: Who's who's had some good international success.
- 23:02Speaker 5: So these are the you know, these are the priceless
- 23:05Speaker 5: experiences that they can get when they when they do that.
- 23:07Speaker 6: So we'll support that.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Fergus is not the only Victorian quick that's turning head.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Sam Elliott took five against that star studded New South
- 23:15Speaker 1: Wales batting line up and also snagged the wicked of
- 23:19Speaker 1: Steve Smith.
- 23:19Speaker 4: That's a pretty good one to have on the resume.
- 23:23Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean that was we weren't expecting Sam to
- 23:28Speaker 5: have such a great game, but you know he continues
- 23:31Speaker 5: to surprise us with his performances and you know that
- 23:34Speaker 5: that arguably he was the in the game. You know,
- 23:40Speaker 5: his eight wickets were not at many runs and here
- 23:43Speaker 5: he got some big wickets as well. So yeah, we've
- 23:46Speaker 5: got we've got high hopes for Sam as well. We
- 23:49Speaker 5: know he's another one that's it's got to do the work,
- 23:51Speaker 5: keep getting better and keep earning the right but you know,
- 23:56Speaker 5: he is another example of some really good talent we
- 23:58Speaker 5: have in our system.
- 24:00Speaker 3: And lastly, Chris, we have to mention Peter hanscom in
- 24:02Speaker 3: a really low scoring match to score that one hundred
- 24:04Speaker 3: in the first settings obviously set the side for the
- 24:07Speaker 3: big win at the SCG. He seems to have such
- 24:09Speaker 3: a wonderful knack of in really tough conditions finding a
- 24:12Speaker 3: way to score runs. That's probably why he was in
- 24:15Speaker 3: that Australian scored a couple of years agoing to India
- 24:17Speaker 3: and it obvious helped the team moving forward when confronted
- 24:19Speaker 3: with difficult pitches like we saw in Sydney.
- 24:22Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm glad you asked me about him. Just sometimes
- 24:25Speaker 5: you know, he doesn't get the credit he deserves. There's
- 24:29Speaker 5: always that perception that he's exactly the same player he
- 24:33Speaker 5: was when he bay eighties Test cricket. But from you know,
- 24:38Speaker 5: having the experiences with him, being a coach of him,
- 24:42Speaker 5: I've seen his growth and he's gone away.
- 24:46Speaker 6: And understood that you know, the style of.
- 24:50Speaker 5: Batting he had when he played Test cricket probably wasn't
- 24:53Speaker 5: going to stand up and it took him a while
- 24:55Speaker 5: to kind of get rid of that stubbornness around that.
- 24:59Speaker 6: But since then he's he's you.
- 25:02Speaker 5: Know, he's been so open to a different style and
- 25:06Speaker 5: I think if you go and watch that one hundred
- 25:08Speaker 5: he got against Stark and Hazelwood and co, you'll see
- 25:12Speaker 5: it's a very different model, just just how he looked
- 25:14Speaker 5: to get bored, he looked to punch back into the ball.
- 25:17Speaker 5: He was just standing on the back foot behind the
- 25:20Speaker 5: crease line. And from that, you know, I think it's
- 25:24Speaker 5: you know, it's a it's a game plan that would
- 25:27Speaker 5: do pretty well in international cricket. So, you know, if
- 25:31Speaker 5: he got the chance again, I think he'd be much
- 25:33Speaker 5: better prepared. If Smith was to retire, and you know,
- 25:38Speaker 5: there was there was that opportunity for it needed for
- 25:41Speaker 5: a stable number four.
- 25:43Speaker 6: You know, I think that that could be Pete definitely.
- 25:45Speaker 5: So hopefully he keeps scoring runs for us and things
- 25:49Speaker 5: play out and he gets another opportunity at Test level.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Well, if anybody knows about getting a second crack at
- 25:54Speaker 1: Test for hit in your mid thirties, it's you, Chris,
- 25:56Speaker 1: and I'm sure you'll be doing your best to get
- 25:58Speaker 1: Pete Hanskin there.
- 25:59Speaker 4: Chris, thanks so much for.
- 26:00Speaker 1: Joining us, and good luck for the rest of the
- 26:02Speaker 1: Shield season with your Victorian side that are high flying
- 26:05Speaker 1: at the moment.
- 26:06Speaker 6: Thanks guys,
