- 0:33Welcome back. The place where we think
- 0:35differently daily. What is going on?
- 0:37My different thinker farm. You guys are dope.
- 0:39So today, talking about jobs and autism, this is a big, big
- 0:44subject. I've done various videos on
- 0:46stuff like that. But today I wanted to kind of
- 0:48put together three kind of essentials that you really need
- 0:51to learn and know about when you're trying to kind of find
- 0:55work or get jobs or you know, or be in the job market for people
- 0:59on the autism spectrum because it's very difficult for people
- 1:02in the autism spectrum to hold and maintain a job.
- 1:04You know, 80% of autistic people are not employed, which is just
- 1:07absolutely shocking. And a friend of mine actually
- 1:10applied for five jobs. She got each one of the jobs,
- 1:12but as soon as she said she had autism, they kind of said that
- 1:14the position had closed up. So that was no good.
- 1:17So it's it's a it's a bleak market at the moment, but we're
- 1:20getting there. We're making the difference.
- 1:22So before we go any further, guys, if you haven't already
- 1:25downloaded my free Autism Wife Hacks PDF book, you can do our
- 1:29autismhacks.net right now. OK, so we are going to cover a
- 1:35couple of ways in which you can see can find a job that suits an
- 1:37autistic person and tips on keeping the job along the way.
- 1:41So we're going to go through three tips right now, and these
- 1:44are going to be super awesome. So make sure you have a pen, a
- 1:46paper ready to write this down, or a tablet or a phone or
- 1:49whatever it is you write down stuff on and let's get started.
- 1:52OK, guys, so the first thing is local authority, right?
- 1:54So most local authorities and agencies have designated
- 1:58programs for autistic people to find work.
- 2:01This will usually also have like a resume building course or
- 2:04they'll maybe help you prepare for an interview.
- 2:07Interview skills they may actually have like fast track
- 2:09programs where you can do like internships.
- 2:11They may have like trial programs where you can, like, go
- 2:13with an agency to try out different types of job
- 2:16opportunities. And if somebody there wants to
- 2:17keep you on, they can keep you on.
- 2:19I did something similar with my local authority and it was
- 2:21really good. So always your first point of
- 2:24call is to contact your your local authority, government or
- 2:30local council and ask them if they have anything for autistic
- 2:34people in terms of job seeking, job help.
- 2:37Or go to your local job centre and ask them hey, do you have
- 2:40any programs to help with people on the autism spectrum?
- 2:42Because everybody has a duty of care, and if you're registered,
- 2:44disabled, like an autistic person is, then you should be
- 2:46able to access these levels of support that they have for you.
- 2:50So that is your first point of call.
- 2:53The next thing I'm going to talk about #2 is self-employment.
- 2:55So a good option really is to home in on what you're good at.
- 3:00Like autistic people are really good at stuff.
- 3:02Like, you know, I don't love autistic people are good at
- 3:04something because they have an obsession of interest in a
- 3:06special interest in that thing, right?
- 3:08And if you're really good in it and you love it and you can do
- 3:11it the best you can, then you can charge for your service.
- 3:14And this is the best way to create self-employment
- 3:15opportunities. With this now local authorities
- 3:17again may be able to help you with small projects, with small
- 3:20grants and small businesses with with different kind of
- 3:24availability and how to support somebody.
- 3:25Because you're contributing towards the economy.
- 3:27You're trying your best for your local community and you're
- 3:29trying best for you. You know you're trying to to
- 3:31have a go at self-employment and everyone salutes people who are
- 3:34self-employed. And I'm self-employed and it was
- 3:36the best thing I ever did and it's the best choice and the
- 3:39best job that I've ever done. So definitely take my advice and
- 3:42look into self-employment. If you think you have something
- 3:44of value to offer people and you think you could charge for your
- 3:46service, that would be super, super awesome.
- 3:49OK, so #3 is training. Now lots of new industries have
- 3:53lots of opportunities if you're well researched and trained in
- 3:56that field. So I suggest that if you're not
- 3:59really into anything specific and you don't want to go
- 4:01self-employed, and then you also don't know you know your local
- 4:04kind of authority doesn't really have much help or training for
- 4:07autism, then why not go to the library, find some online
- 4:10courses and study in an industry that you kind of want to have
- 4:13access to. And then you can then apply for
- 4:15positions and be the knowledge base in the insight in that
- 4:19community, in that career. And potentially have a really,
- 4:22really good job in that area. Because autistic people are
- 4:25really good at humming in on something of a very good kind of
- 4:29level of interest. And This is why autism is such a
- 4:31unique and amazing disorder or condition.
- 4:35Whatever you want to say. Now if you guys have any more
- 4:37tips that you could offer people about finding jobs, keeping jobs
- 4:40and all this type of jobs for people in the autism community,
- 4:44then pop it in a comment down below because I read every
- 4:47single one. Now if you think this video can
- 4:48help somebody, please post this video on Facebook, Instagram and
- 4:52Twitter. And if you like this video, give
- 4:54it a thumbs up and I'll see you next time guys.
- 4:56Peace.
