- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back. It's the UConn Football Coaches Show. Jason Candle, three,
- 0:03Speaker 1: four minutes left with him. I'm going to go a
- 0:06Speaker 1: little bit back into your history as an athlete, because
- 0:09Speaker 1: I know you're a very good golfer, and obviously you've
- 0:12Speaker 1: been in the football world for a long time. And
- 0:15Speaker 1: I'm only bringing this up because I just watched an
- 0:17Speaker 1: interview with Jack Nicklaus. I mean, being an Ohio guy,
- 0:20Speaker 1: you probably follow what he did in his life. I
- 0:23Speaker 1: can't get enough of Jack Nicklaus. But anyway, what he
- 0:26Speaker 1: was saying in this interview is that as a kid,
- 0:29Speaker 1: someone asked him, what sports did you play? You know,
- 0:31Speaker 1: how did you get into golf? And he said, no,
- 0:34Speaker 1: I was a football guy. I like basketball. I thought
- 0:37Speaker 1: I could play at Ohio state, maybe baseball and all
- 0:40Speaker 1: this stuff. And I'm just curious, you were a football player,
- 0:44Speaker 1: but what were you as a youngster in terms of athletics?
- 0:47Speaker 1: What was your favorite sport? How did you end up
- 0:49Speaker 1: in football?
- 0:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I did. I played them all. I mean, I
- 0:54Speaker 2: probably grew up, you know, the first love being basketball,
- 0:57Speaker 2: to be honest with you. But, um, played four sports
- 0:59Speaker 2: in high school, I golfed in high school, played football, basketball, baseball.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Did them all.
- 1:04Speaker 2: I just tried to, you know, anything that, you know,
- 1:07Speaker 2: that would keep me going after school, always wanted to
- 1:11Speaker 2: be involved. You know, track was a, you know, I
- 1:14Speaker 2: jumped for a year or two in track, but obviously,
- 1:16Speaker 2: you know, it wasn't fast enough to make an impact
- 1:18Speaker 2: in that one. So, but yeah, I mean, I think
- 1:21Speaker 2: I fell in love with football just because I think that,
- 1:25Speaker 2: you know, the action, the, the, the opportunity I've actually
- 1:28Speaker 2: played golf as a freshman and went back to playing
- 1:30Speaker 2: football as a sophomore. And I just thought golf was boring. And,
- 1:33Speaker 2: you know, I've been a five or six handicap since
- 1:36Speaker 2: I was 15 years old and haven't gotten any better
- 1:39Speaker 2: in the, in the 30 years of that gap from
- 1:43Speaker 2: then until now. But I think, you know, it's, it's, it's,
- 1:47Speaker 2: that's a great sport. It's a very challenging sport. And
- 1:49Speaker 2: when it comes to the mental piece of it, I
- 1:51Speaker 2: wish I had more time to play and, and really
- 1:53Speaker 2: quite honestly, I wish I had time to practice. to
- 1:56Speaker 2: get better but yeah I mean I think I always
- 1:58Speaker 2: pay attention just to to all sports and I think
- 2:02Speaker 2: more importantly it's not it's not the sport that gets
- 2:05Speaker 2: me it's just the competition piece of it so you
- 2:08Speaker 2: know when you're done playing you know what's the next
- 2:10Speaker 2: best thing to playing and that's coaching you know can
- 2:13Speaker 2: you can you feed that need for competition through coaching
- 2:16Speaker 2: and can you ultimately at the end of the day
- 2:18Speaker 2: help people be the best version of themselves through competition
- 2:21Speaker 2: and That's just kind of how I found my way,
- 2:23Speaker 2: and that's how it's gotten me to the point where
- 2:25Speaker 2: I'm at right now.
- 2:27Speaker 1: And so what did you learn as a player that
- 2:30Speaker 1: you use in coaching these days? And that's kind of
- 2:33Speaker 1: a big question, but do you find yourself going, oh,
- 2:35Speaker 1: I remember when I did this in your mind, and
- 2:37Speaker 1: then saying something to a player and going, you know
- 2:40Speaker 1: what I mean, to kind of translate a little bit
- 2:42Speaker 1: of what your experiences were?
- 2:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that, you know, I played at Mountain
- 2:46Speaker 2: Union College. We won 54 games in a row. We
- 2:49Speaker 2: lost one and then we won 55 in a row
- 2:51Speaker 2: after that. So we won 109 games out of 110
- 2:54Speaker 2: when I was there as a player and as an
- 2:55Speaker 2: assistant coach. So at that time at 22, 3, 4, 5,
- 3:00Speaker 2: when I was there, I was just dumb enough to
- 3:01Speaker 2: believe it was all because of me. So, you know,
- 3:05Speaker 2: you're young, you're in your late teens, your early 20s,
- 3:08Speaker 2: you're having success. or you're having failures, you know, and
- 3:12Speaker 2: you easily, you point the finger at yourself and you
- 3:14Speaker 2: don't really realize the environment that you're in. For me,
- 3:17Speaker 2: I'm so fortunate, so lucky. You mentioned Nick Sirianni, Matt Campbell.
- 3:22Speaker 2: There's so many guys around the country that are coaching
- 3:24Speaker 2: football at a really, really high level. And without that
- 3:26Speaker 2: start at Mount Union and without being there and learning
- 3:28Speaker 2: the foundation of football and really what putting together a
- 3:31Speaker 2: team and making young people, helping young people become the
- 3:33Speaker 2: best version of themselves, without that, we wouldn't be where
- 3:36Speaker 2: we were. So, yeah, I think that, It takes humble beginnings.
- 3:41Speaker 2: It takes a consistent approach. It takes a really good
- 3:43Speaker 2: process that you can buy into individually. And then ultimately
- 3:46Speaker 2: from there, when you get a bunch of individual buy
- 3:48Speaker 2: into that, then you should have good team buy into it.
- 3:50Speaker 2: So I just try to share those experiences. And, you know,
- 3:54Speaker 2: how I look at it now is a lot different.
- 3:56Speaker 2: You know, my experience there, what I look at now
- 3:58Speaker 2: is a lot different than maybe what I looked at
- 3:59Speaker 2: it when I was 19 or 20.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Yep. Yep. We all got, we got to grow up.
- 4:03Speaker 1: We got to learn from our early mistakes and getting
- 4:05Speaker 1: off the mat. That's what UConn's got to do this
- 4:08Speaker 1: week at Southern Miss. Coach, we appreciate you and good
- 4:11Speaker 1: luck this weekend.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Thanks guys.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Go Huskies. That's right. Go Huskies. That's Jason Candle. Back
- 4:17Speaker 1: with more, the UConn Football Coaches Show coming up in
- 4:20Speaker 1: a moment on Learfield.
