- 0:48We're so glad you joined us. Let's get started.
- 0:52To God be the glory. Welcome to the Healthy
- 0:55Overdeemed podcast. I am your host.
- 0:59Haley. Thank you so much for joining me
- 1:02today. I wanted to do a little bit of
- 1:05follow up from our last episode. I wonder if you have been
- 1:09replacing your thoughts and how that has been going for you.
- 1:14Sometimes it is very hard when we have been entrenched in our
- 1:18negative thoughts for a long time to actually make that
- 1:21change. And so I wanted to do a little
- 1:23bit quick follow up to last episode before we get started on
- 1:29our topic today. And that is one of the
- 1:34techniques I used to help people who are having a hard time
- 1:38actually creating their healthy thought replacement is to use
- 1:43the Bible. And I do this with clients.
- 1:45A lot of the time when when clients are really struggling to
- 1:49think of something healthy, the Bible is a great place to go for
- 1:55that. So I wanted to take a few
- 1:57scriptures and read those to you and pull out some of the things
- 2:04that would make good replacement thoughts.
- 2:07God's promises will always run through the healthy thought
- 2:11criteria well or like at 100%. So is it truthful?
- 2:16Is it encouraging? Is it helpful?
- 2:18You will always have yes to those in regard to God's
- 2:24promises. So let me share 3 scriptures
- 2:29that I think are helpful if you're feeling depressed or
- 2:32hopeless or kind of having those really down and negative
- 2:37thoughts. The first scripture comes from
- 2:40Isaiah 4110 and it says so. Do not fear for I am with you.
- 2:47Do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
- 2:51I will strengthen you and help you.
- 2:54I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
- 2:59Isaiah 43 verses 2 through 3 says when you pass through the
- 3:04waters, I will be with you, and when you pass through the
- 3:07rivers, they will not sweep over you.
- 3:11When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned.
- 3:14The flames will not set you ablaze, for I am the Lord your
- 3:19God, Isaiah 46, four says even to your old age and Gray hairs,
- 3:26I am he, I am he who will sustain you.
- 3:31I have made you and I will carry you.
- 3:34I will sustain you and I will rescue you.
- 3:39These are really great scriptures to go to when you
- 3:42need some encouragement. Isaiah is packed full of those.
- 3:47So let's look at those scriptures in reference to we
- 3:51want to create some healthy replacement thoughts from those
- 3:55scriptures. Let's pretend like our negative
- 3:58thought is I can't do this anymore.
- 4:03We would replace that thought with from that scripture we just
- 4:07read, God will strengthen me. So we have the thought I can't
- 4:11do this anymore or something related to that.
- 4:15Our replacement thought would be God will strengthen me.
- 4:19Our negative thought would be I have no one nowhere to turn.
- 4:24And our healthy replacement thought would be, God will help
- 4:27me, I am done, I'm as low as I can go would be our negative
- 4:34thought. Our healthy replacement thought
- 4:37would be God will uphold me. Our negative thought might be I
- 4:42am all alone and our replacement thought would be God is with me.
- 4:49Our negative thought might be I'm so scared I don't want to do
- 4:52anything, I can't do anything. Our replacement thought might be
- 4:58God will protect me and enable me to persevere.
- 5:03Though things feel overwhelming, I will be safe.
- 5:09Our negative thought might be, I can't do another day, it's just
- 5:14too much. Our healthy replacement thought
- 5:18would be, God will sustain me, God will rescue me, God will
- 5:23carry me. So any scripture that has a
- 5:28promise included in it is a great one to use as a healthy
- 5:32replacement thought. And you can see as we have that
- 5:35negative thought, it pops into our mind.
- 5:37We replace it with a Scripture that's made personal to us.
- 5:44Please remember that although we're having feelings, they
- 5:49don't tell us the truth. We rely on God's Word for truth.
- 5:55That's why Scripture is a great place to find our healthy
- 6:00replacement thoughts. We can feel a lot of things but
- 6:06that doesn't make them true. Our emotions can be very wish
- 6:10washy and double minded. They can be back and forth.
- 6:14We use our God-given mind to discern truth.
- 6:18The Holy Spirit discerns truth for us.
- 6:23Our wisdom comes from the Lord and that's what we want to use
- 6:28as we begin to think healthier every day.
- 6:31I do want to encourage you. Oftentimes we will find that a
- 6:35lot of our negative thoughts are really identity based.
- 6:40As we dig into God's word and we discover who we are, how much
- 6:46God loves us, how much He's concerned about us.
- 6:48This will take care of a lot of negative thoughts over time.
- 6:53So just keep digging into the Word, trusting the Word to
- 6:58sustain you. As you keep replacing those
- 7:02thoughts. Pretty soon it'll become more
- 7:04and more natural to do that. We're only going to speak
- 7:08truthful, healthy, and encouraging things to ourself.
- 7:13OK, what are we going to talk about today?
- 7:15Well, actually, I wanted to share with you a theory that I
- 7:20had. So I think I've said this, or at
- 7:23least I've alluded to it on previous episodes, that normally
- 7:25when just something stays on my mind a while, that's kind of how
- 7:29I choose what I'm going to talk about.
- 7:32And so this has been on my mind to share.
- 7:34I don't know why it's a theory of mine.
- 7:38It's not. I mean, I can find support for
- 7:41it in scripture, but did it come exactly from scripture?
- 7:45No, this is my theory and it comes from the journey that I
- 7:52had when if you listen to We're Back and you know My faith walk
- 7:59that I have loved God followed him all my life for all that I
- 8:07can remember and but I rededicated my life in my late
- 8:1220s, mid to late 20s and through that process of trying to
- 8:20understand what had happened. How can I go from loving God
- 8:27and, and that didn't change, but that my behavior was so off and
- 8:32I couldn't kind of figure out like why I got so off.
- 8:37I know a lot of it was that I wasn't based in Scripture, that
- 8:43I didn't know the word well enough to obey it and I didn't
- 8:48get in and read it. Therefore, I would not be
- 8:50convicted. That's convenient, right?
- 8:54So you can end up justifying a lot of this stuff in your mind
- 8:57if you don't read the Bible. But when you really surrender
- 9:03your life to God through Jesus Christ, that produces a heart
- 9:09change where you really want to be convicted on things.
- 9:13You really want to be told that you're not doing well.
- 9:18And so anyway, that's where I am now.
- 9:24I like to be convicted back then, not so much.
- 9:27Now I do, I want to follow God with my whole heart, soul of
- 9:31mind. But this theory, it's called the
- 9:35HT hole theory HOLE. This was a theory I created
- 9:41based on my own wrestling with my issues and kind of why I was
- 9:47doing the things that I was doing other than just not
- 9:50reading the Bible. So this analogy, this theory was
- 9:55basically that we are, when we're born, we're like a cup, a
- 10:02whole cup. Like you can imagine a Styrofoam
- 10:05cup. I have actually have a cup in my
- 10:07hand. It's a cardboard cup.
- 10:10When I've talked about this before, I usually use a
- 10:12Styrofoam cup. But anyway, but either imagine a
- 10:15Styrofoam cup or a cardboard cup, OK.
- 10:18And we are like this when we're born, when God forms us in our
- 10:21mother's womb, we are whole, we are complete in a spiritual and
- 10:26physical sense. Job 14.
- 10:29One says that mortals born of woman are a few days and full of
- 10:33trouble. And I I take that to mean that
- 10:37it doesn't take long. Once you're born, you're in a
- 10:41fallen world, raised by fallen people, surrounded by fallen and
- 10:46sinful people. It is hard to be complete as God
- 10:52made us to be when we're living in this fallen world, Ephesians
- 10:57one verse 4 says. For he chose us in him before
- 11:02the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.
- 11:10I think that was the original design.
- 11:12We're made in his image. But, but because we live in a
- 11:15fallen world, things happen. And so that's kind of what I
- 11:20believe in this theory is that we're we're whole, but as we
- 11:26live in this world, things start getting all messed up and we
- 11:30start getting holes in our cup. And So what do these holes look
- 11:35like? What makes them?
- 11:37So here's some examples. And I have the cup in my hand.
- 11:40And so if you hear a sound, it's a hole being made in the cup.
- 11:43A hole might be formed from getting rejected by our parents
- 11:48or our caregivers in some way. Maybe others reject us.
- 12:00Maybe we are hurt physically or emotionally by others.
- 12:07Maybe we're ridiculed or hated or despised.
- 12:17Maybe we've been hit or molested or raped.
- 12:25Maybe we've been insulted or teased.
- 12:33Maybe love was given to us conditionally only if we perform
- 12:38well. Maybe we were told to be quiet,
- 12:46be seen, not heard. Maybe we've been told or someone
- 12:51acted like we didn't matter. Maybe someone said that we have
- 12:58no value. Maybe we were forgotten and each
- 13:10big or small thing that happened in our life as we grow up and
- 13:17even as adults, holes are made. We live in a fallen world and so
- 13:30holes are definitely going to be made in our cup.
- 13:35We feel like we're not good enough.
- 13:38We've been put down, rejected, ridiculed, abused.
- 13:44So we may have a lot of holes in our cup or we may just have a
- 13:50few. But because we have these holes,
- 13:54we start looking for things to make us feel complete.
- 14:02Because if we think about these holes and we try to fill this
- 14:10full of water, it might hold some water for a little while,
- 14:15but eventually it's going to come out because there are holes
- 14:18in there. And even if we didn't try to
- 14:21fill it with water, we just don't feel complete.
- 14:25We don't feel whole. So we might start looking around
- 14:31to the world to fill our holes. So we might look to good grades
- 14:38or an education, hoping that fills our holes.
- 14:43We might look to a spouse, children or other people to fill
- 14:50our holes. We might look to a job or money
- 14:56to make us feel whole. We might look to alcohol or sex
- 15:05or even drugs to help us fill whole.
- 15:11And you know, honestly those will fill you up temporarily.
- 15:15They will kind of, you know, you can kind of pop out the thing
- 15:20and it looks a little bit whole and probably even feel pretty
- 15:24whole temporarily. So we keep looking for things of
- 15:30the world to fill us up to, to fix our holes.
- 15:35And honestly, this is what kept me unhealthy for a long time.
- 15:40I had holes that were created from just different things in my
- 15:45life. I could see very clearly that I
- 15:49really wanted to be loved and accepted.
- 15:54And so I did all sorts of worldly things to feel that.
- 16:02And that was really the downfall, how I got so far from
- 16:07acting appropriate for a Christian.
- 16:10But I'm here to give you some good news.
- 16:13This is what I found out, that we can look in the world for all
- 16:17these things to complete us, to fill us up, to fix our holes,
- 16:23but there is nothing in this world that's going to do it.
- 16:28The only thing that can heal us from all those holes that have
- 16:33been made is Jesus Christ. God promises to make us new, and
- 16:41He does make us new. Once we surrender our life to
- 16:44Him, He makes us new. He completes us.
- 16:47He repairs the holes, He restores those holes where our
- 16:54cup can be filled. Then now I believe that he will
- 17:00fix our cup here. Now, I haven't got the perfect
- 17:03analogy of how this works specifically, but I do feel like
- 17:08he fixes us enough that our cup can be complete and whole and
- 17:15hold water. But when we get to heaven that
- 17:23we will receive a new cup completely new with no scars, no
- 17:30bumps, no bruises, nothing. It's going to be all new.
- 17:34And to me that is very exciting. But we do get to experience a
- 17:38little bit of that heaven on earth that our cup can be whole,
- 17:44we can be fixed, repaired, healed, because that's the
- 17:50promise that God gives us that we can be that.
- 17:53But we have to seek him to find that.
- 17:56There's no other way that we're going to find that now.
- 18:01I mean, if we're feeling empty and down and and lonely and all
- 18:06that, like our spouse can help, our friends can't help, can
- 18:10help, but they're not going to be what completes us.
- 18:13So if we're constantly searching, like I can't feel
- 18:16good about myself unless somebody is saying this to me.
- 18:19I can't feel good about myself unless someone accepting me or
- 18:23approving of me or all this stuff that we look to to fill us
- 18:28up. We're going to always be
- 18:30looking, we're always going to be searching, We're always going
- 18:33to be longing. So people can help, but they're
- 18:35not going to fix our cup. Only Jesus Christ can do that.
- 18:40And He did that on the cross for us.
- 18:44So we have to go seek Him, turn to the Lord, give Him our life,
- 18:49and He makes us whole. Are you struggling with anxiety

- 19:23today. As I'm thinking about this
- 19:26concept, like the Do you remember the story?
- 19:30It's in John 4, It is Jesus having a conversation with the
- 19:36Samaritan woman. They are at the well.
- 19:38She is getting water during a certain time of day that makes
- 19:44us think that she could most likely be an outcast in her
- 19:48community because she's going when nobody else is but Jesus is
- 19:54there. So she's drawing water from the
- 19:56well and Jesus asked her for some and she's kind of shocked
- 20:00and a little taken back because he's a Jew, she's a Samaritan
- 20:05and they don't associate and. So Jesus is asking her for
- 20:11something to drink from her container of water.
- 20:14Like that's kind of big so but Jesus basically tells her that
- 20:20if she knew who Jesus was, she would be asking him for a drink
- 20:25of living water. And with some more of that
- 20:28conversation, Jesus ends up saying in so they kind of
- 20:35converse a little bit more. And then in verse 13, Jesus
- 20:38says, Jesus answered, everyone who drinks this water will be
- 20:42thirsty again talking about the water in the well.
- 20:46So anyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again.
- 20:48But whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.
- 20:52Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of
- 20:58water welling up to eternal life.
- 21:04It's not the things of the world that's going to fill us.
- 21:10The things of the world keep us thirsty when we go to Jesus, the
- 21:18spring of water, the spring of living water that will cause us
- 21:26never to thirst again. God gives us something through
- 21:31Him that cannot be satisfied with earthly things.
- 21:36Ultimately, we're going to be satisfied perfectly and
- 21:39completely in heaven. But He does offer some of that
- 21:42right here. The other scripture that comes
- 21:45to mind is 1 from Jeremiah 213 is God speaking to his people
- 21:52and he says my people have committed 2 sins.
- 21:57They have forsaken me, the spring of living water and have
- 22:00dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.
- 22:06So God is referring to himself as the spring of living water.
- 22:10Isn't that beautiful that it's in the Old and New Testament?
- 22:14And that's beautiful in and of itself because if you've been to
- 22:18a spring of water like that's already miraculous.
- 22:22But anyway, so he refers to himself as the spring of living
- 22:27water. He is saying that they are,
- 22:31instead of partaking of him, that they have dug their own
- 22:36cisterns. Isn't that crazy?
- 22:41God is offering them a spring of living water.
- 22:44And they say, Nah, we're going to, we're going to dig our own
- 22:48cisterns. We're going to, we're going to
- 22:50try to get some water out of this.
- 22:52And then those cisterns are broken.
- 22:56They're they're not even holding water.
- 22:59They can't hold water. So the Israelites, instead of
- 23:03seeking the best water, they're looking to their own doing to
- 23:10get filled. They are looking to their own
- 23:14broken stuff that doesn't feel, that doesn't hold, that doesn't
- 23:18do anything. They're looking to that to fill
- 23:21them. And God's over here saying, hey,
- 23:23excuse me on the spring of living water.
- 23:27Why are you doing that? But isn't it crazy?
- 23:30We do the same exact thing? And that's why I think this
- 23:33theory has stuck with me so long because I actually created the
- 23:40theory. That's what's called HT hole
- 23:42theory. This was before I got married,
- 23:44before I was a counselor. Just that own my own wrestling
- 23:48that that's it's so true. We're looking to get filled up
- 23:56from the world and it never will fill.
- 24:01It will never fill. So I so I don't know if this
- 24:08theory is correct or it can hold water, so to speak.
- 24:13That's a good one right. I, I don't know how how far that
- 24:19analogy could go, but I do know that God has created a certain
- 24:24way. He's created us to be in a
- 24:26relationship with him and we are always going to be looking for
- 24:32something to satisfy because we need, he's created us to need
- 24:38him. And so we're always going to be
- 24:41looking to get that need filled. And so whether it was a hole
- 24:46made or it's just a lacking a relationship with God that's
- 24:50going to leave us searching. If you've been searching is
- 24:56right here, friend, right here. God, the one that's created you
- 25:02wonderful, you made just for him.
- 25:05You will not be satisfied until you rest in him.
- 25:11Now, there's a great quote from Saint Augustine.
- 25:15So he's a real old guy, Christian theologian,
- 25:20philosopher that was way back, like died in 430 AD, like a long
- 25:27time ago. Anyway, he wrote a book called
- 25:29Confessions and it's kind of an autobiography.
- 25:33We're kind of talking about his spiritual journey and how he
- 25:36converted from being a Catholic to Christianity.
- 25:41That's from my understanding. But anyway, that's all of a
- 25:44sudden point. He had a quote that says you
- 25:49have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless
- 25:55until it rests in you. Gosh, isn't that good?
- 26:02Our heart is restless until it rests in you.
- 26:06So if you're feeling restless, maybe you're not resting in God.
- 26:11Maybe you're looking to other things.
- 26:14I, I know I have and do I do the same thing.
- 26:18It's like so natural and we're always kind of fighting these
- 26:23natural tendencies of the scars of our holes.
- 26:27If we didn't feel loved when we were young, we're going to look
- 26:31for other ways to get that. You're not going to be
- 26:34satisfied. This is what I found out.
- 26:37You're not going to be satisfied until you get that from the
- 26:42Lord. If you were abused or hurt in
- 26:47some way, there is nothing in this world that will heal you
- 26:53except our Lord and Savior. He promises this for His
- 26:58children and I. This is, I mean, this is a lot
- 27:02of why I started this podcast because I, it breaks my heart
- 27:08that there's so many people hurting in this world.
- 27:12And I just want to share with you like God loves you.
- 27:16He wants you to be healed and He wants to make that happen in
- 27:22your life. And maybe there's some obstacles
- 27:25stopping you from turning to Him, but I pray that you do that
- 27:30because He's got everything you need.
- 27:32We don't need to look to broken cisterns or make our own trying
- 27:36to get what He's over here trying to give us.
- 27:40We're not going to find what we're searching for in the
- 27:43world. We were made for Him.
- 27:47We need him. That is the only thing that is
- 27:50going to make us whole. So I'd like to close with the
- 27:52Scripture from Psalm 42, verse one through 2.
- 27:58It says as the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul
- 28:04pants for you, my God, my soul thirst for God, for the living
- 28:10God, friends, our soul thirst for God.
- 28:14Now, not everybody knows this, you know, it's thirsting and
- 28:19we're looking to the world to fill us, and that's not going to
- 28:24fill our souls, thirst for God. That's what our hearts, our
- 28:30souls, our bodies are looking for.
- 28:33They need God. So I would just encourage you
- 28:35today to turn to Him and let Him heal you.
- 28:40It doesn't matter how many holes you have in your cup.
- 28:44God is here and He's willing to heal.
- 28:47Remember that we can seek fulfillment and worldly things,
- 28:53but these ultimately are going to leave us unsatisfied, making
- 28:58us feel restless or empty. We're never going to be
- 29:03satisfied when we chase the things of this world.
- 29:05So when you have a need, friend, I want to encourage you to go to
- 29:09God. Give him that need.
- 29:11Don't seek that need to be filled by other people or other
- 29:16things. God is the only one who can
- 29:20restore, redeem and complete your cup.
- 29:25Now let's go and live healthy and redeemed, reflecting Jesus
- 29:30Christ rightly in all that we do.
