- 0:00Speaker 1: This is the Meat Eater podcast coming at you from
- 0:02Speaker 1: a portion of Idahole that flows into the Snake River.
- 0:04Speaker 1: That's right, right, Callahan copy correct. The reason I can't
- 0:09Speaker 1: tell you that is he's got done mule deer hunting
- 0:11Speaker 1: and Callahan, um, he's real skittish. He's got little spots
- 0:20Speaker 1: all over and um and multiple states even, but he
- 0:25Speaker 1: gets leary when you talk about northern Can I say
- 0:30Speaker 1: northern Rocky scale, I mean Rocky. I mean what's Northern Rockies.
- 0:35Speaker 1: That's British Columbia. Okay, the Rockies. You're calling me saying
- 0:39Speaker 1: we've been hunting the Rockies. We've been hunting meal during
- 0:41Speaker 1: the Rocky Mountains to not betray anything. What what I
- 0:47Speaker 1: think I ought to be illegal? This is nothing to
- 0:49Speaker 1: do with with with any of this, but it's just
- 0:51Speaker 1: been something really weighing on my mind. Well I think
- 0:53Speaker 1: I would be illegal? Is um ads hunting ads? We're
- 1:00Speaker 1: a dude hunting ads that show a dude with like
- 1:03Speaker 1: a rack on his pack when you know that there
- 1:08Speaker 1: that it was just a rack someone had laying around
- 1:10Speaker 1: or in a freezer, especially when that dude is still
- 1:14Speaker 1: looking very sneaky. Because to me, I'm like that guy
- 1:18Speaker 1: as a poacher didn't know it's like the way those there. Yeah,
- 1:26Speaker 1: he's still sneaking and he's got nothing else with him,
- 1:30Speaker 1: like Lord knows where the meat is. He's got like
- 1:33Speaker 1: a rack and he's always standing on a pinnacle surveying
- 1:37Speaker 1: the landscape. Dudes packing game don't look like that. No,
- 1:42Speaker 1: they don't look like dudes that you want to run into.
- 1:44Speaker 1: For the most part, dudes packing game who actually have
- 1:46Speaker 1: a rack on their back look like some guy that
- 1:48Speaker 1: just is like in the suckiest situation imaginable, can barely
- 1:54Speaker 1: walk and is on and his head in a downhill
- 1:57Speaker 1: direction and is not going out of his way to
- 2:00Speaker 1: iron pinnacles and look all majestic and survey the landscape,
- 2:03Speaker 1: or to be a dude like with a big old
- 2:05Speaker 1: rack and he's like crossing a raging river with a
- 2:09Speaker 1: mean look on his face and he still got his
- 2:11Speaker 1: bow already. I just I got the situation never happens.
- 2:17Speaker 1: I would make an add of a couple of dudes
- 2:19Speaker 1: who just looked like they hated their lives and had
- 2:22Speaker 1: no weapons because they left him at another part of
- 2:25Speaker 1: the trip. They like this their third trip in there
- 2:29Speaker 1: in a fight because they're fighting about something and one
- 2:32Speaker 1: of them knee hurts and did say, like Steve's gear.
- 2:37Speaker 1: I told you we shouldn't have taken that trail to
- 2:40Speaker 1: the guys readjusting his hip belt. Yeah, you guys trying
- 2:43Speaker 1: to figure out what's around his backpack because he's like, dude,
- 2:47Speaker 1: this shouldn't hurt my neck. This bad to have a
- 2:49Speaker 1: backpack on. Why is it that either my hips kill
- 2:54Speaker 1: or my shoulders kill. It's when it's supposed to all
- 2:57Speaker 1: be evenly distributed. That would be a realistic ad. But no,
- 3:01Speaker 1: it's a guy looking like like a makeup person might
- 3:05Speaker 1: have put a little dirt on his face, and he's
- 3:07Speaker 1: on a he's like surveying a majestic mountain scene, rifle
- 3:12Speaker 1: in hand and like some giant elk crack where you
- 3:15Speaker 1: mysteriously can't see any part of the thing. Or some
- 3:18Speaker 1: of the guys are sneaking. They keep a bloody old
- 3:20Speaker 1: skull in their freezer, the sneaky. But the all of
- 3:25Speaker 1: these guys, even if they're surveying some scene they're in,
- 3:28Speaker 1: they're always in like a semi crouch, like a semi sneak. Yeah, yeah,
- 3:32Speaker 1: I'm like it looks majestic. I'm just thinking about this
- 3:36Speaker 1: because we just did like I mean, it wasn't even
- 3:38Speaker 1: a huge pack out, but as the way out, I
- 3:39Speaker 1: was thinking, like, if you took a picture me for
- 3:41Speaker 1: an ad, I don't know what they added before. You
- 3:51Speaker 1: look like somebody you would never ever under really any
- 3:56Speaker 1: some circumstance like pick up off the side of the road.
- 4:00Speaker 1: That guy is having a hard time. Yet there's something
- 4:02Speaker 1: wrong with you. There's something about blowing by. Yeah, there's
- 4:06Speaker 1: something about how miserable he looks. It gives me the Willie's.
- 4:10Speaker 1: There's one guy I don't know a name who he has.
- 4:11Speaker 1: There's one guy I know it must have kept a skull.
- 4:15Speaker 1: He had an elks Go on a freezer, because I
- 4:18Speaker 1: feel like that elks Go popped up in more ads
- 4:21Speaker 1: of packing ads. You know what we're doing today is
- 4:26Speaker 1: we're answering um we're doing. We're here with Garrett Smith,
- 4:32Speaker 1: Garrett Audie, everyone out there. Garrett has a electric toothbrush.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Um lives in a vehicle, just getting done living in
- 4:43Speaker 1: a vehicle at thirty two years of age, but has
- 4:45Speaker 1: an electric toothbrush. And he got in a lot of
- 4:46Speaker 1: toothbrush because he thought it was a step toward adulthood,
- 4:50Speaker 1: baby steps. That's Brad's calculated move. He blew, He blew
- 5:00Speaker 1: forty bucks on a toothbrush that makes a humming noise.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Ryan Callahan Hello, Uh, Jana's Van's wall? Who tells us?
- 5:12Speaker 1: And Adam I don't even know what your last name? That? Well,
- 5:14Speaker 1: yeah that's right, Adam Offa who's a camera guy. The
- 5:19Speaker 1: first time we ever went out with you, did you
- 5:22Speaker 1: have enjoyable time? Yeah? It was fun. It was fun,
- 5:24Speaker 1: you guys fun hard. It was tough, but fun. I
- 5:27Speaker 1: got to see Callahan's mustache every you got to see
- 5:31Speaker 1: more than that, Yeah, I dig it a little more
- 5:33Speaker 1: than that. Callahan came back into camp wearing enough but
- 5:37Speaker 1: his suspenders one night, and with a mustache and the
- 5:42Speaker 1: Paris suspenders, and the reason for that being it was like,
- 5:47Speaker 1: what were the suspenders holding up his pants? Oh? Yeah, yeah,
- 5:51Speaker 1: he doesn't just clip He needs that kind of the
- 5:54Speaker 1: old clips. He can just like clip it to his
- 5:56Speaker 1: buttocks and his hips. This was not a fashionable moment.
- 6:04Speaker 1: It was very dark out and uh, I had had
- 6:08Speaker 1: taken the majority of my sweaty clothing off and draped
- 6:14Speaker 1: it over a mule deer. So the black bear that
- 6:16Speaker 1: I had gonna point out, he left to go get
- 6:18Speaker 1: a black bear and came back with the deer. Yes,
- 6:21Speaker 1: it came out with a bag of guts from a
- 6:23Speaker 1: deer um. But yeah, so I'm not Adam pointed out
- 6:29Speaker 1: it looked like a fat stick. It's like you're a
- 6:33Speaker 1: hundred forty pounds, but you have a beer gut work anyway. Yeah,
- 6:41Speaker 1: so I had peeled off a good portion of my
- 6:45Speaker 1: clothing to put on top of the deer, to to
- 6:49Speaker 1: keep the bear you were trying to kill from eating
- 6:50Speaker 1: your deer, or give me some peace of mind or something. Yeah,
- 6:53Speaker 1: so I feel like that trick works. We did that
- 6:57Speaker 1: all the time leaving ilk overnight. You don't know it himpirically,
- 7:01Speaker 1: but it feels like it would work. I p around,
- 7:05Speaker 1: put clothes on it. It can't hurt. I've never seen
- 7:09Speaker 1: bears get on carcasses faster anywhere than Colorado, So I
- 7:16Speaker 1: think if and you're talking about doing that in Colorado
- 7:18Speaker 1: all the time, Yeah, I mean if that for me
- 7:21Speaker 1: would be a pretty good Litmas test. My brother lost
- 7:23Speaker 1: a good portion of it out to a bear last year.
- 7:27Speaker 1: I'd like to ask him if he did the clothes
- 7:28Speaker 1: trick or not. That was our tree too, right. What
- 7:32Speaker 1: he did he boned out. He left the four legs
- 7:35Speaker 1: on the bone and boned out um the rest and
- 7:42Speaker 1: the bear ate, all the boned out stuff and buried
- 7:45Speaker 1: all the bone and stuff. So he loaded all the
- 7:47Speaker 1: boned and stuff, dug it back up, put it on
- 7:50Speaker 1: his llama, brought it down to a creek and wash
- 7:52Speaker 1: it on. Got out of there because he lost his
- 7:56Speaker 1: quiver in the night, because he's like heading back to
- 7:59Speaker 1: his camp after dar because threw the latch on his quiver.
- 8:02Speaker 1: He had one of those uh tight spots, but he
- 8:05Speaker 1: didn't have it on there. Right now, I thought your
- 8:08Speaker 1: brother was shot recurvever longbow. Oh that was Danny, No, Matt.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Danny is a traditional well, I mean, he likes to
- 8:19Speaker 1: shoot a recur but he hunts with primarily with a rifle.
- 8:22Speaker 1: I think he killed like oh dear with his recurve.
- 8:24Speaker 1: But he likes to shoot recreationally. My other brothers shoots
- 8:28Speaker 1: a compound. He don't like to hunt with the rifle.
- 8:30Speaker 1: He just likes the hunt on his boat. A matter
- 8:31Speaker 1: of fact, he's got a mountain goat tagging right now,
- 8:32Speaker 1: he's hunt Mountain GOLs with his boat, but he's bringing
- 8:35Speaker 1: his rifle to I told me he's gonna look like
- 8:37Speaker 1: Arnold Schwarzenegger in the end of Commando when he raids
- 8:40Speaker 1: that island compound with a duffel bag full of weapons.
- 8:43Speaker 1: It's gonna have a caddy. Yeah, like, yes about it?
- 8:46Speaker 1: Two or fifty yard shot. This is one of those
- 8:52Speaker 1: special podcast episodes, and we answered questions. Um, here's the
- 8:58Speaker 1: first question this, Ah, everybody gets a chance to answer this.
- 9:05Speaker 1: It's from what the hell town we near? This is
- 9:10Speaker 1: something from this town. We're in the middle of the Rockies. Well,
- 9:15Speaker 1: I just had a weird thing happened where I felt
- 9:16Speaker 1: like I had entered like another dimension because the guy
- 9:21Speaker 1: named Drew says, this is that the town. We're gonna
- 9:23Speaker 1: look at the bottom of that darn close, darn close, fellow,
- 9:27Speaker 1: darn close to us right now? How's this say? So
- 9:30Speaker 1: not much of a conspiracy theorist, but I have a
- 9:33Speaker 1: buddy who is convinced that the Clinton administration's main motivation
- 9:37Speaker 1: for reintroducing wolves back into the West was for gun control.
- 9:42Speaker 1: With wolves growing at an exponential rate and negatively impacting ungulates,
- 9:47Speaker 1: the tradition of hunting would diminish over the years, with
- 9:50Speaker 1: fewer and fewer hunters, the sale of new firearms go down,
- 9:54Speaker 1: and in time, hunting won't become an American value. Garretty,
- 9:59Speaker 1: what's your take on that. I think his buddies got
- 10:03Speaker 1: to focus on another field of study because personally, that's
- 10:11Speaker 1: a roundabout way of going about stuff. Yeah, you're like
- 10:15Speaker 1: you're like taking like the real like long gamble on
- 10:18Speaker 1: that got an idea. I got an idea. Feather floats too,
- 10:27Speaker 1: No Drew, I Uh, I think there's no there's no
- 10:33Speaker 1: question how um the Clinton administration passed and the potential
- 10:39Speaker 1: Clinton administration future feels about firearm regulations, There's no question there.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Do I think that they would uh have the wherewithal
- 10:50Speaker 1: and like the crystal ball clairvoyance kind of thing to
- 10:57Speaker 1: like have such a long draw on out planned. It
- 11:01Speaker 1: seems so um, sort of sketchy and its exception and
- 11:06Speaker 1: difficult to track. And I don't think that's the case.
- 11:12Speaker 1: What I think it happened. I don't think there's a
- 11:13Speaker 1: big mystery about why wolves are back. I think wolves
- 11:17Speaker 1: were reintroduced because they had been extirpated regionally, extirpated from
- 11:24Speaker 1: human caused activities, and we have an obligation to remedy
- 11:30Speaker 1: human caused ecological catastrophe. It's not always popular, but I
- 11:36Speaker 1: think it's our obligation. Um, we can't drive animals to
- 11:39Speaker 1: extinction like it's it's bad business. It's bad spiritually, very bad. Um,
- 11:46Speaker 1: depending on your worldview, I think it would be a
- 11:49Speaker 1: sin against God and man to just accept extinctions as
- 11:54Speaker 1: a matter of course. So I think that there was
- 11:56Speaker 1: an obligation to right that wrong. I'm not comment right
- 11:59Speaker 1: now on whether or not we should regulate wolves. I
- 12:02Speaker 1: think rules should be regulated like any other big game.
- 12:05Speaker 1: I think they should be at this point managed in
- 12:08Speaker 1: places where they've recovered. I think they should be managed
- 12:10Speaker 1: on the state level as a renewable resource. But no,
- 12:13Speaker 1: I just I think your body is off. I think
- 12:14Speaker 1: your body maybe smoking a little too much herb um.
- 12:20Speaker 1: One thing I think when I when I see a
- 12:22Speaker 1: question like that is um. This is writer Joan Didion,
- 12:26Speaker 1: and she has a book called Slouching Towards Bethlehem, or
- 12:28Speaker 1: maybe it was she has nothing book called The White Album.
- 12:30Speaker 1: I can't remember what you her books this was in,
- 12:32Speaker 1: but she was talking about in the sixties now not now,
- 12:37Speaker 1: but this is going on in the sixties. She's talking
- 12:38Speaker 1: about because there's so much information out there that people
- 12:44Speaker 1: get like that the more information it becomes available, the
- 12:49Speaker 1: more widespread and easily accessible that information is, people get
- 12:52Speaker 1: more hungry for like the secret story. You know, we're
- 12:58Speaker 1: talking about this earlier today in relation to how seems
- 13:00Speaker 1: that people that smoke a lot of weed really start
- 13:04Speaker 1: getting hungry for those inside scoops. My brother believes that
- 13:11Speaker 1: it's the same kind of guy who's hungry for an
- 13:13Speaker 1: inside scoop is the same guy who likes starts smoking
- 13:16Speaker 1: a lot of weed. And it's not that smoking weed
- 13:18Speaker 1: makes you hungry for the inside scoop that no one
- 13:20Speaker 1: knows the real truth about Johnny? Why do you think
- 13:25Speaker 1: that's Why do you think that was the ultimate goal
- 13:27Speaker 1: of woolf for introduction disarming America. I agree with the
- 13:31Speaker 1: the smoking too MUCHO um really yeah, or if he's
- 13:36Speaker 1: never smoked weed in his life, he needs to start
- 13:42Speaker 1: calling those nerves. Adam, are we missing anything on this question? No? No, yeah,
- 13:47Speaker 1: I that just seems so unpossible. I mean, yeah, I
- 13:50Speaker 1: just don't feel like it really warrants really much more
- 13:52Speaker 1: of our Yeah, I'm interesting, all right. You guys always
- 13:58Speaker 1: going to say this is a question though you guys
- 14:02Speaker 1: always go into such great detail in your discussion, so
- 14:05Speaker 1: it was a compliment. I wasn't even part of the question.
- 14:07Speaker 1: I would love to hear about your recommendations, experiences, horror stories,
- 14:10Speaker 1: and traveling by means of airplanes, navigating, t s a, passports, visas, customs, packing,
- 14:18Speaker 1: guns and cameras, packaging and travel with meat and hides um.
- 14:24Speaker 1: Leaving like production element out of it which isn't as
- 14:26Speaker 1: interesting to me, like the cameras and stuff like that,
- 14:29Speaker 1: and leaving the passports and visas out of it. I
- 14:31Speaker 1: think what I like about this question is the traveling
- 14:36Speaker 1: with game meat. I like that aspect of this question
- 14:41Speaker 1: a lot. And I like a little bit to travel
- 14:43Speaker 1: with guns thing um. And all the travel with gaming
- 14:47Speaker 1: I've ever done. I've lost. One time I lost a
- 14:50Speaker 1: bunch of American eels. It was very hot. They were
- 14:54Speaker 1: lost in the Billings, Montana airport. I was coming back
- 14:57Speaker 1: from New York State with a bunch of eels, and
- 14:59Speaker 1: by the time I got them back, it was just
- 15:01Speaker 1: a sack of slime and eel bones. I mean it
- 15:04Speaker 1: was it was bad. The only thing I've ever lost.
- 15:08Speaker 1: I'm pretty careful about it. I like the freeze stuff.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Put it in a cooler, duct tape the cooler shut
- 15:16Speaker 1: um and check it, and even if it were to
- 15:18Speaker 1: get lost for a day or two, the stuff is
- 15:20Speaker 1: gonna stay pretty good inside there. You can when dealing
- 15:24Speaker 1: with small amounts, like I've taken turkeys, and instead of
- 15:27Speaker 1: even trusting that I would lose the turkey two baggage loss,
- 15:32Speaker 1: I just carry the bird on. At one time had
- 15:36Speaker 1: a bag of pickguts frozen in my carry on. They
- 15:41Speaker 1: pulled it out to inspect it and had no comment
- 15:46Speaker 1: on it. Another time had a shotgun shell in my
- 15:49Speaker 1: carry on, and that did not go smoothly I had.
- 15:53Speaker 1: I was interviewed by the police, and they knew, like
- 15:55Speaker 1: I was, like, man, we were just hunting time again.
- 15:56Speaker 1: I forgot to take the shocker shot in my bag.
- 15:58Speaker 1: But they had like a whole rigmarole they had to
- 16:00Speaker 1: go through, and they knew that I was obviously just
- 16:03Speaker 1: you know, made a mistake, but they still had to
- 16:06Speaker 1: notify the police and fill out of, you know, a
- 16:08Speaker 1: bunch of paperwork, and they were kind of annoyed with
- 16:10Speaker 1: me because you could tell that it happened to them
- 16:12Speaker 1: every day in Anchorage. Some Yahoo has a thing y'all
- 16:19Speaker 1: need to tell your story your turkey, your dead turkey,
- 16:23Speaker 1: and your shotgun show. Yeah that was just last year,
- 16:26Speaker 1: wasn't it. I think we done a shoot and then
- 16:29Speaker 1: I was maybe I stayed to hunt. It wasn't a shoot.
- 16:32Speaker 1: We're just hunting dugs for fun. Oh no, we're turkey
- 16:35Speaker 1: hunt in California or No, or was Wisconsin. I think
- 16:40Speaker 1: it was my personal trip. I was humping my dad,
- 16:43Speaker 1: my brother was coming home. Anyways, checked my bags, went
- 16:47Speaker 1: through security. What was it? You didn't tell them what's
- 16:50Speaker 1: in your bag? Well get to that or you're doing
- 16:52Speaker 1: a story and you wouldn't you know, I wouldn't tell
- 16:54Speaker 1: the story in this order, but go ahead. Well you
- 16:58Speaker 1: know I'm coming home from turkey hunt. So I checked
- 17:01Speaker 1: all my bags. I have my backpack with my laptop
- 17:03Speaker 1: in on me and they called my name, Janice ptailis,
- 17:07Speaker 1: please come back to security, and um I rolled back
- 17:12Speaker 1: in there and he's like, we found a loose Uh.
- 17:15Speaker 1: So I walked through the door and take me to
- 17:16Speaker 1: the back door and then we always stayless. Steel tables
- 17:18Speaker 1: set out in this room, and I had packed my
- 17:23Speaker 1: not yet frozen turkey parts just in zip blocks, double
- 17:26Speaker 1: ziplock bags. They're they're cool. Just packed him into the
- 17:29Speaker 1: middle of my big duffles like it was a skinned yeah,
- 17:34Speaker 1: caught up into like legs and breasts exactly. And so
- 17:37Speaker 1: I walked into this room and they've got you know,
- 17:40Speaker 1: we have these giant I don't know how many leaders
- 17:42Speaker 1: those stuffle bags are of ours that we have, like
- 17:46Speaker 1: maybe even bigger. All my stuff spread out, you know,
- 17:52Speaker 1: just like the individual It was like turkey because I
- 17:54Speaker 1: was bringing home like wings and and you know, feathers
- 17:58Speaker 1: from my girls, and you know, all the meat and
- 18:01Speaker 1: just everything's just spread out everywhere. In my gun case
- 18:04Speaker 1: is actually locked up like it's off to the side.
- 18:06Speaker 1: I'm like, that's kind of weird. It's kind of funny,
- 18:09Speaker 1: you know. So they told me that the meat is
- 18:12Speaker 1: what ticked off the X ray machine because just because
- 18:14Speaker 1: like the big turkey breast kind of looks like a
- 18:16Speaker 1: glob of weird matter, I guess. So they went in
- 18:20Speaker 1: to check at that and they found a loose shell
- 18:24Speaker 1: in there. So you can have you know, AMMO in
- 18:26Speaker 1: your baggage, but it has to be in a in
- 18:27Speaker 1: ad for the purpose either original packaging or like a
- 18:33Speaker 1: plastic container made to carry it. And it's not supposed
- 18:36Speaker 1: to be able to touch like you know it ty
- 18:41Speaker 1: two shells come sometimes just touching. Yeah, it's supposed to
- 18:45Speaker 1: have dividers. No, I didn't know that. So he showed
- 18:50Speaker 1: it to me, and I'm thinking, oh, man, because I
- 18:53Speaker 1: just heard your stories, I was thinking now when I
- 18:55Speaker 1: missed my flys and I had to go through like
- 18:57Speaker 1: the big you know, police interview in YadA YadA, and
- 18:59Speaker 1: you was, he like makes a phone call and goes, no,
- 19:02Speaker 1: we just gotta pitch this. Well I look at it,
- 19:05Speaker 1: and I had a box of um turkey rounds, like
- 19:10Speaker 1: in one of those like aftermarket plastic boxes, you know,
- 19:13Speaker 1: and them in there were like the heavy shot the
- 19:16Speaker 1: stuff it's like four or five bucks around, and then
- 19:18Speaker 1: there was five that were like some cheaper Remington stuff. Well,
- 19:22Speaker 1: he's holding the heavy heavy shot in his hand. I'm like,
- 19:25Speaker 1: you know, if we're gonna throw a shell out, you know,
- 19:28Speaker 1: maybe I could do a little swap because I've actually
- 19:30Speaker 1: got a container in my in my you know, a
- 19:32Speaker 1: gun case locked in there. And he's like, yeah, sure,
- 19:34Speaker 1: I don't see why not. So I got to keep
- 19:36Speaker 1: the heavy shot. Heavy shot was probably a turkey hunter.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Apparently it doesn't hurt task. Now we had a fuel canister, yeah, um,
- 19:50Speaker 1: and we can do a situation. A lot of times
- 19:52Speaker 1: you're buying bear spray and you can't fly with that
- 19:54Speaker 1: no matter what. And fuel cans. You can't fly on
- 19:56Speaker 1: commercial airliners with fuel cans. And think we had a
- 20:00Speaker 1: four thousand dollar fine for a few came from t
- 20:03Speaker 1: s A. Never made never even made it on the plane,
- 20:06Speaker 1: ice appropal stuff, never even made it on the plane.
- 20:09Speaker 1: No ice appropa. What's the word I'm looking for? Team Yeah,
- 20:14Speaker 1: never made it on the plane. So they call one
- 20:16Speaker 1: of the guys, one of the guys were traveling with.
- 20:18Speaker 1: They call his name because like we're just checking bags
- 20:20Speaker 1: under whoever's name. He goes down like, hey, there's this
- 20:25Speaker 1: canctor is it? O Oh, I don't need it? He
- 20:29Speaker 1: thinks nothing of it. Weeks go by, a letter of
- 20:32Speaker 1: four thousand dollar fine shows up the mail. The lawyer
- 20:36Speaker 1: got it down to half that. Unreal. Yeah, I would say, uh,
- 20:42Speaker 1: just to throw in like one helpful tidbit here. If
- 20:45Speaker 1: you're traveling internationally and you're looking at your flight schedule
- 20:48Speaker 1: and you're like, oh, don't have any long layovers. You
- 20:52Speaker 1: may want to adjust that so you have two hours
- 20:55Speaker 1: at customs. I think two hours at customs is kind
- 20:57Speaker 1: of the memory we had too. The gun stuff throws
- 21:02Speaker 1: in for a loop, throws in for loop. There's just
- 21:04Speaker 1: some formalities. Now. If you're like, I'll tell you one.
- 21:06Speaker 1: The biggest tip I would give. The biggest trouble I
- 21:08Speaker 1: had if you if you are traveling internationally is go
- 21:11Speaker 1: to US customs and have them give you a There's
- 21:18Speaker 1: a form and even has a standard number. Basically write
- 21:21Speaker 1: down what your rifle is, serial number, description to rifle.
- 21:24Speaker 1: They stamp that form. So when you're coming back into
- 21:27Speaker 1: the US, Like people are as worried about what the
- 21:28Speaker 1: other country's government's gonna think, But when you're coming back
- 21:31Speaker 1: in the US, you can't just be turning up in
- 21:35Speaker 1: customs with a gun. They're gonna want to know is
- 21:39Speaker 1: that your gun? Where did you get the thing? So
- 21:41Speaker 1: getting that and I had I didn't do this one
- 21:43Speaker 1: time and it caused all kinds of headaches. Get the
- 21:45Speaker 1: customs form and get it stamp saying I own X
- 21:49Speaker 1: serial number firearm what scope is on its serial number
- 21:52Speaker 1: of your scope. So when you come back to the US,
- 21:55Speaker 1: you can go like I left with this thing here
- 21:57Speaker 1: it's a temporary export and then import form. Yeah, that
- 22:02Speaker 1: I can cause trouble because they don't want you just
- 22:04Speaker 1: turning up at the border toting guns that they don't
- 22:07Speaker 1: know how you came into it and what it is.
- 22:10Speaker 1: And so you gotta watch Alfred. That stuff just flying
- 22:13Speaker 1: generally can never flowing with the firearm works like this.
- 22:16Speaker 1: I'm talking general domestic travel. You gotta have a hard
- 22:19Speaker 1: sided case, and you gotta have locks on it and
- 22:22Speaker 1: have it actually locked up. You got your case locked
- 22:25Speaker 1: in such a way that you cannot get the gun
- 22:27Speaker 1: out without undoing the locks. I've seen people take a
- 22:31Speaker 1: regular case and put a little pad lock on the
- 22:33Speaker 1: two parts of the handle. And I had a couple
- 22:35Speaker 1: weeks ago, I had a woman in front of you
- 22:36Speaker 1: get turned away by the t s A because he
- 22:39Speaker 1: just threw the latches and pulled the gun out. Lock
- 22:42Speaker 1: wasn't doing ship for good because it was right locked
- 22:44Speaker 1: in the middle of the case. So you got a
- 22:45Speaker 1: hard sided case that is such that you cannot get
- 22:49Speaker 1: the firearm out without removing the locks. They don't care
- 22:51Speaker 1: if it's two locks, three locks, four locks, one lock,
- 22:54Speaker 1: it's gotta be unlocked to get it out. It doesn't
- 22:56Speaker 1: need to be a T A T S A lock
- 22:59Speaker 1: like the universe. The locks doesn't need to be that.
- 23:02Speaker 1: You go up, you tell the that the check encounter,
- 23:05Speaker 1: you say, I'm traveling with the firearm. They're gonna give
- 23:07Speaker 1: you a declaration form. All the declaration form says as
- 23:11Speaker 1: you're saying, the firearm is not loaded. Depending you can
- 23:16Speaker 1: have the ammunition in the case or not. To be safe,
- 23:21Speaker 1: don't put it in the case. Have the ammunition in
- 23:23Speaker 1: a hard case meant for the purpose of transport and shells.
- 23:29Speaker 1: The reason I don't like the paper cases is because
- 23:31Speaker 1: they can just get messed up, paper rips. Whatever they
- 23:34Speaker 1: spill out, you could have trouble. So go and buy
- 23:37Speaker 1: those little four dollar five dollar amo cases, tape things shut.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Put your ammunition in there, have it labeled. Where was
- 23:45Speaker 1: I you telling me you signed declaration? You put the
- 23:48Speaker 1: declaration into the case. You then will walk your firearm.
- 23:51Speaker 1: This is most airports. You'll either walk your firearm to
- 23:55Speaker 1: a t S a oversized baggage area and they'll swab
- 23:58Speaker 1: the outside of the case while you stand there, never
- 24:02Speaker 1: even open it up, or the ticket agent will send
- 24:07Speaker 1: it back on a conveyor and tell you to hang
- 24:08Speaker 1: tight until she gives you the word. Then they'll go
- 24:11Speaker 1: and check your firearm. They'll give you the wink and
- 24:14Speaker 1: a nod. Get on the plane. Generally, nine out of
- 24:19Speaker 1: ten times you go to baggage claiming your farm does
- 24:21Speaker 1: not come out on the carousel, but you're going need
- 24:24Speaker 1: to present an I D to a baggage handler oversized baggage.
- 24:28Speaker 1: You guys feel that that's true. It's pretty simple. I
- 24:30Speaker 1: would say also that because of the liquidity, there's the
- 24:34Speaker 1: right word to use for that of those REGs. Rules change,
- 24:38Speaker 1: and then you've got to argue with the ticket agent
- 24:41Speaker 1: because you know the rules better than they do exactly.
- 24:43Speaker 1: So I was gonna say it is like, do your
- 24:45Speaker 1: research ahead of time. Maybe print out, you know, a
- 24:47Speaker 1: few pieces of paper from you know, their website that
- 24:51Speaker 1: has their rules and REGs. Because it's been someone new
- 24:53Speaker 1: and they haven't done a few of those and they
- 24:55Speaker 1: don't have it's busy, they don't have the help they
- 24:57Speaker 1: can back them up. You know, you can do yourself.
- 25:00Speaker 1: You know, a huge favor by having that mean like, look,
- 25:03Speaker 1: got this right off your website. Here it is, here's
- 25:05Speaker 1: the deal. Um, you know, because when in international airlines
- 25:09Speaker 1: can be different because what you just described is domestic.
- 25:11Speaker 1: But we just went over to you know, BC a
- 25:13Speaker 1: month ago and Air Canada. You know you cannot now
- 25:17Speaker 1: have ammo in with your rifle. But they didn't even know.
- 25:21Speaker 1: I had to argue with him about what it was.
- 25:23Speaker 1: She's like, no, you can't anymore because there's just a
- 25:26Speaker 1: big snaff foo. And the other woman's like, no, you
- 25:28Speaker 1: have to now because of the big snaffoo, right, And
- 25:31Speaker 1: then they get the third guy who jumps to with
- 25:33Speaker 1: his own opinion about the whole thing. But that's international.
- 25:36Speaker 1: It's like, yeah, do your research. I'm saying, like, generally
- 25:38Speaker 1: in the US that's how it goes. But if you're
- 25:40Speaker 1: flying into bos and Montana, those people are processing firearms
- 25:44Speaker 1: all day long, they know the rule. If you're flying
- 25:46Speaker 1: into weird towns, like let's say, for whatever is you're
- 25:48Speaker 1: flying a guy I don't know, I'm pulling this out
- 25:50Speaker 1: of my ass. Let's say you're flying into Miami, it
- 25:52Speaker 1: might be good to be prepared to present at the
- 25:55Speaker 1: Miami airport someone to demonstrate that you know what the
- 25:58Speaker 1: rules are at one time. In New York State, so
- 26:03Speaker 1: any airport run by Port Authority, which is a police
- 26:06Speaker 1: that's like a police department that sort of operates on
- 26:09Speaker 1: behalf of New Jersey in New York with ports and airports,
- 26:13Speaker 1: they have their own procedure where when you go to
- 26:14Speaker 1: check a firearm, they have a Port Authority police officer
- 26:18Speaker 1: come to the ticket desk, ticket counter, and that Port
- 26:21Speaker 1: Authority police officer records the serial number, makes sure you
- 26:25Speaker 1: have the proper permit to have a firearm in New
- 26:28Speaker 1: York City. If you're flying out of New York City,
- 26:29Speaker 1: you're flying through New York City to go hunting. Then
- 26:32Speaker 1: they escort you to the T s A. Now I
- 26:35Speaker 1: knew that I was supposed to be escorted by a
- 26:36Speaker 1: Port Authority police officer. I had a ticket agent assuring
- 26:39Speaker 1: me I was not supposed to be escorted by a
- 26:40Speaker 1: Port Authority police officer. They had me walk my own
- 26:43Speaker 1: gun over to the T s A. And then they
- 26:45Speaker 1: want up having to sit there in a little cop
- 26:46Speaker 1: office explaining my story until the ticket aged person came
- 26:50Speaker 1: and clarified that I did, in fact argue with her
- 26:54Speaker 1: and that she messed up, So yeah, be armed, But
- 26:57Speaker 1: I don't want I don't like it sound like a
- 26:58Speaker 1: horror story. Man, It's generally like shockingly easy. Yeah, how
- 27:04Speaker 1: how how early do you get there before your flight?
- 27:06Speaker 1: That were different than normal? Definitely normal, but I like
- 27:09Speaker 1: to go earlier. Yeah, and I buffered with a firearm
- 27:13Speaker 1: for sure. Like the other day when I was checking
- 27:17Speaker 1: in it in Seattle, for whatever reason, they just had
- 27:21Speaker 1: they were just like backed up with the t s
- 27:23Speaker 1: a go. I was backed up with people's golf clubs
- 27:25Speaker 1: and skis, you know. I mean, it was just he
- 27:27Speaker 1: was having a slow time of it. So I leave
- 27:29Speaker 1: a little buffer. Um looking at these questions here, could
- 27:37Speaker 1: I say one quick thing about production flight or yeah?
- 27:39Speaker 1: Please man, well do that while I pick out a
- 27:41Speaker 1: good question. Well, the thing, the thing we've had issue
- 27:43Speaker 1: with is the lithium batteries and like trying to take
- 27:47Speaker 1: as many of those and carry on throughout the crew
- 27:51Speaker 1: because they will peeing sometimes and you have to deal
- 27:54Speaker 1: with that. And we always carry on a full camera
- 27:58Speaker 1: kit with media bats to you. So if check baggage
- 28:01Speaker 1: gets yeah, ends up and you can still keep rolling
- 28:05Speaker 1: while you wait for everything to come in. So you know,
- 28:08Speaker 1: there's that that whole like rumor that T s A
- 28:11Speaker 1: Agents are really rough on hunter's guns. That's why you
- 28:13Speaker 1: need to sign a man when you get what you
- 28:15Speaker 1: never heard that. It's like why you when you travel
- 28:18Speaker 1: internationally or you know, domestic, when you go and you
- 28:20Speaker 1: want to sit your gun and as soon as you
- 28:22Speaker 1: can because the baggage handlers kick your guns around. Right. Yeah,
- 28:27Speaker 1: it's just general like I've never had it. I'm not curious.
- 28:32Speaker 1: I've never had more T s AS guys be all
- 28:34Speaker 1: excited about what you're going to hunting for rough on bags. Yeah, no,
- 28:39Speaker 1: I agree. You were sitting the plane and look out
- 28:40Speaker 1: the window and watching Lowes bags. They could care less, dude. Yeah,
- 28:44Speaker 1: I don't believe it. The last time that happened where
- 28:46Speaker 1: I actually had that view looking out the window and
- 28:49Speaker 1: the mom watching this guy and he looks like he's
- 28:51Speaker 1: my size, and he's grabbing our Pelican cases which way
- 28:55Speaker 1: fifty to eighty pounds, you know, and he's making sure
- 28:59Speaker 1: that he is getting them airborne compt you know, like
- 29:03Speaker 1: he's just like, yeah, get my training in right now.
- 29:06Speaker 1: You know. I just couldn't believe it, Like those things
- 29:08Speaker 1: were landing with the nice thud. Okay, I will I
- 29:13Speaker 1: had it is nice if you're talking about buffers to
- 29:19Speaker 1: look somewhat like you do in your passport picture. The
- 29:22Speaker 1: only reason I ended up in the room for further
- 29:28Speaker 1: review when we came through customs after the BC trip
- 29:31Speaker 1: this year is because the guy kept looking at my
- 29:34Speaker 1: passport picture from when I was three and looking at
- 29:40Speaker 1: me at thirty two with the mustache, and he's like,
- 29:45Speaker 1: I'm gonna send you back for further identification review. And
- 29:49Speaker 1: then all of a sudden he's like when we get
- 29:51Speaker 1: I go back to the back room. The rest of
- 29:53Speaker 1: the crew comes through and they're dealing with all the
- 29:57Speaker 1: production stuff and like, oh, you guys are traveling together,
- 30:01Speaker 1: like lump them all into one group. And then it
- 30:05Speaker 1: was like, let me see your firearms and all this stuff.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Had I just looked a little bit like I did
- 30:11Speaker 1: in my passport picture, I would have breezed right through. See.
- 30:13Speaker 1: That's why I like a guy like me who's timeless.
- 30:17Speaker 1: It's just one of the side benefits. I can't grow
- 30:19Speaker 1: facial hair, yeah, but you wouldn't shave your must ask
- 30:22Speaker 1: for that BS No way, Well, I gotta get a
- 30:25Speaker 1: new passport picture. Yeah, yeah, alright, My buddies are giving
- 30:30Speaker 1: me a hard This is a question. My buddies are
- 30:32Speaker 1: given me a hard time because I took a three
- 30:35Speaker 1: yard shot on a goat yesterday. Where is he from?
- 30:37Speaker 1: Is it me mountain goat? Oh? I wish I knew
- 30:41Speaker 1: what kind of goati's tombot was already a great question.
- 30:44Speaker 1: My buddies given me a hard time because I took
- 30:46Speaker 1: a three shot on a goat yesterday. Oh, A lot
- 30:50Speaker 1: of dudes, especially more and more every year, call antelope goats.
- 30:56Speaker 1: I wish you'd clarify, not that it's gonna affect the answer.
- 30:59Speaker 1: My buddies me a hard time because I took a
- 31:01Speaker 1: three hundred yards shot and a goat yesterday with my
- 31:03Speaker 1: thirty thirty. My point was that it was three yards straight,
- 31:10Speaker 1: but I was two yards above the target, which means
- 31:14Speaker 1: my horizontal it was a hundred and fifty yards angle compensation.
- 31:20Speaker 1: I'm not sure what he's saying because it doesn't really
- 31:22Speaker 1: make sense to me. Let me, let me take a
- 31:28Speaker 1: look he's holding. I don't know, Oh, you know what
- 31:36Speaker 1: he's talking about, some kind of wild goat, because he's
- 31:38Speaker 1: now he's going on about Hawaii. I'm gonna paris the
- 31:42Speaker 1: question out because I think he's saying he's he's he
- 31:44Speaker 1: kind of goes on about archery. Yeah, okay, yes, yes,
- 31:51Speaker 1: and no, I don't even know what. Let me take
- 31:53Speaker 1: it first part. Let's two questions. I think three yards
- 31:57Speaker 1: is is a long shot for a thirty because they
- 32:04Speaker 1: really start to drop off at what Yanni Yanni Van's wall. No,
- 32:07Speaker 1: at what point is? At what point does the thirty
- 32:10Speaker 1: thirty really start to drop off? I don't really know.
- 32:13Speaker 1: I mean, we know that it's definitely a slower round,
- 32:16Speaker 1: but I would think that with today's AMMO you can
- 32:19Speaker 1: probably get something that a hotter round that could energy. Yeah. Okay,
- 32:26Speaker 1: so there you have it. Um yards shots. This is
- 32:32Speaker 1: just a perennial thing that comes up, like what what
- 32:34Speaker 1: kind of shots are too far? It's impossible to answer.
- 32:38Speaker 1: It's not impossible to answers some guidelines. A shot too
- 32:43Speaker 1: far when you're taking it and you're trying to and
- 32:45Speaker 1: you're wondering or not if you're gonna hit it, he fails.
- 32:47Speaker 1: Men should be hit the goat. Yeah, if you can,
- 32:51Speaker 1: I add on to that, just real quick, please finish,
- 32:53Speaker 1: finish it up. The very just propped into my head
- 32:58Speaker 1: because I've read another question earlier us thinking about it.
- 33:00Speaker 1: But the way to answer that and to figure that
- 33:03Speaker 1: out is basically whether or not your bullet, whatever velocity
- 33:08Speaker 1: is it's doing at three yards, if your bullet is
- 33:11Speaker 1: still performing you know, so a lot of bullets say
- 33:14Speaker 1: they perform, you know, um down to ft per second.
- 33:19Speaker 1: So basically, if you're bullets dropped to see per second,
- 33:22Speaker 1: when it hits, it's not gonna expand its It's gonna
- 33:26Speaker 1: retain its shape and just gonna pencil through the target,
- 33:29Speaker 1: pencil through the animal. So you're not gonna get that mushrooming.
- 33:32Speaker 1: So I would look at you know, look at the
- 33:34Speaker 1: ballistics chart. If you don't get the mushroomming, you're not
- 33:36Speaker 1: going to get the damage to the animal. Chances are
- 33:39Speaker 1: the recovery is going to be much harder. Yeah. I
- 33:42Speaker 1: shot a deer at four hundred sixty yards through the
- 33:49Speaker 1: lungs with with a monolithic bullet, solid copper bullet. The
- 33:54Speaker 1: wound channel looked about like if you took an arrow
- 33:57Speaker 1: with a field tip and poked it through the animal.
- 34:00Speaker 1: This thing didn't. It was through the lungs. It didn't
- 34:02Speaker 1: even register the hit. He kept chasing does and then
- 34:06Speaker 1: got a little woozy looking and fell over. No, No,
- 34:10Speaker 1: it was like he didn't know. I'm sure he felt
- 34:12Speaker 1: it was like he didn't know what happened because that
- 34:13Speaker 1: thing didn't have enough energy to open up, and it
- 34:16Speaker 1: was a it was a bullet that already had almost
- 34:18Speaker 1: like a weight retention or some you know, it's just
- 34:20Speaker 1: like a it just took a lot of velocity to
- 34:22Speaker 1: open that thing up. They make some of those solid
- 34:25Speaker 1: They were into those solid copper bullets that were sold
- 34:28Speaker 1: to pedal. But it took a lot of velocity. So
- 34:32Speaker 1: that that's a good point to bring up. It's like
- 34:33Speaker 1: the energy, you know, because if oftentimes you look at
- 34:37Speaker 1: a ballistics chart and you'll see a number will be read,
- 34:40Speaker 1: you know, and it'll it'll be like, at what distance
- 34:43Speaker 1: does that thing lost so much velocity that doesn't have
- 34:46Speaker 1: the energy anymore to get at to function. But I
- 34:51Speaker 1: don't but I think the guy, I'll say this, I
- 34:53Speaker 1: think of this dude here is really fixing to do
- 34:57Speaker 1: a lot of three yard shooting, and I don't care
- 34:59Speaker 1: about all the new deaf and issus. Three shot is
- 35:01Speaker 1: a shot that you have to pay attention to. I
- 35:04Speaker 1: agree that's bordering on even by Western standards. A three
- 35:10Speaker 1: hundred yards shot is out into the marksman. It's out
- 35:14Speaker 1: where marksmanship matters. Right hundred yards you can be six
- 35:19Speaker 1: inches off, you know, and and being there you have
- 35:27Speaker 1: to be doing everything right three hundred yards minor mistakes.
- 35:32Speaker 1: If this dude is and he's hunting goats, and I
- 35:34Speaker 1: know he's in Hawaii, so he's hunting, like I'm talking
- 35:37Speaker 1: a little barnyard goats which are small, I would think
- 35:41Speaker 1: that he would if he's gonna get serious about this
- 35:44Speaker 1: and that's his new norm, I would think he'd be
- 35:50Speaker 1: thinking about a new rifle. Yeah. I mean, it could
- 35:54Speaker 1: be completely wrong on this, but just from you know,
- 35:57Speaker 1: my growing up, I've never heard of a thirty thirty
- 36:00Speaker 1: being some you know, an accurate weapon to begin with.
- 36:06Speaker 1: It's always been like a saddle gun. It's like, yeah, guys,
- 36:10Speaker 1: I mean, the only guys shooting thirty thirties anymore seems
- 36:12Speaker 1: like guys shooting berries and lions with hounds because it's
- 36:15Speaker 1: shooting out of a tree right up right above them.
- 36:17Speaker 1: But the only thing is it's like, sure, let's say
- 36:20Speaker 1: it doesn't have the energy. The thing is when you
- 36:22Speaker 1: get when you get a bullet that has a lower
- 36:25Speaker 1: muzzle blasting, it starts to drop off. It really matters,
- 36:27Speaker 1: Like there's a big difference between an animal at two
- 36:31Speaker 1: yards an animal at three yards. When your bullets losing inches,
- 36:37Speaker 1: when it's losing inches to gravity over short spaces because
- 36:42Speaker 1: it's traveling so slow. Like physics one on one, if
- 36:45Speaker 1: I took a bullet, let's say I'm holding Let's say
- 36:47Speaker 1: you're shooting a hundred and fifty grain bullet, okay, And
- 36:51Speaker 1: I took a bullet and held it out of arm's
- 36:53Speaker 1: length and dropped it from my fingers, and at the
- 36:58Speaker 1: same time, I shot a bullet at that height perfectly
- 37:03Speaker 1: on a flat plane. I shot a bullet from that
- 37:06Speaker 1: height perfectly horizontal. Those two bullets hit the ground the
- 37:08Speaker 1: same time. It's not defying gravity. I opened my fingers,
- 37:13Speaker 1: thing hits the ground. So if you're shooting five yards away,
- 37:17Speaker 1: your bullet is traveling in a downward thing as it
- 37:19Speaker 1: slows down, that becomes more exaggerated. So unless you're really
- 37:23Speaker 1: good on range and you have a great range finder,
- 37:25Speaker 1: if you're just guessing, like, oh, he looks three yards away,
- 37:28Speaker 1: but you're in fact wrong, and he's three forty yards away.
- 37:32Speaker 1: That's not a very forgiving cartridge. Like let's say you
- 37:36Speaker 1: had some you know, let's say you had a three
- 37:39Speaker 1: hundred when mag shooting thirty feet per second, the bullet
- 37:43Speaker 1: is gonna be a lot closer to your point of
- 37:47Speaker 1: aim at three forty yards than one that's just poking along.
- 37:52Speaker 1: Put that in better terms, beyond you're better at that
- 37:54Speaker 1: kind of stuff. No, you're exactly right, But I mean,
- 37:58Speaker 1: I think you explained it very well. The thing to
- 38:00Speaker 1: remember is that even with a three hundred windmag, the
- 38:03Speaker 1: difference between three hundred yards and here and forty is
- 38:05Speaker 1: ceased to be compensated for, you know, to shoot flat
- 38:09Speaker 1: out to three d fifty yards. You know, very few
- 38:13Speaker 1: cartridges are really you know, have a maximum point blank
- 38:16Speaker 1: range of of something that far. What's that rifle? Floyd
- 38:19Speaker 1: was talking about thirty so to three seventy eight neck
- 38:24Speaker 1: down to a thirty count and I think he was
- 38:26Speaker 1: saying that he has point blank out the four or something. Yeah,
- 38:31Speaker 1: so he's got a he's got a souped up real
- 38:33Speaker 1: fast rifle that he can zero with two hundred yards
- 38:36Speaker 1: and basically aim on an animal where he wants to
- 38:38Speaker 1: hit out anywhere from zero to four hundred yards to
- 38:41Speaker 1: be within three inches. Yeah, and I bet they zero
- 38:44Speaker 1: because they knew they're gonna take long shots. They probably
- 38:46Speaker 1: zeroed at three to get like a point blank range
- 38:49Speaker 1: out to four plus. So then if the deer jumps
- 38:52Speaker 1: out and he's twenty yards away or he's four hundred yards,
- 38:54Speaker 1: ware he just aimory you want to hit and pull
- 38:55Speaker 1: the trigger and he'll be within a few inches. But
- 38:59Speaker 1: it doesn't mean to go back. It does not matter
- 39:03Speaker 1: where that rifle zero at. If you suck at aim,
- 39:06Speaker 1: if you suck suck it shooting. If you jerk that
- 39:09Speaker 1: trigger and you're shooting something at four hundred yards, you're
- 39:13Speaker 1: gonna be either getting a very gut wrenching lesson or
- 39:20Speaker 1: missing completely four yards. Yeah. My personal for me personally,
- 39:28Speaker 1: if I can't four yards, as far as I like
- 39:30Speaker 1: to shoot animals that live in creatures, four yards, that's
- 39:36Speaker 1: just where I'm at personally, And that's just the you know,
- 39:38Speaker 1: I know I mentioned one earlier. That's the first I've
- 39:40Speaker 1: ever shot at something at an animal. Um for if
- 39:44Speaker 1: I get like if I if I'm hunting, I can
- 39:46Speaker 1: get within four yards, and I think that that's as
- 39:47Speaker 1: good as I'm gonna do. I will take a four
- 39:49Speaker 1: hundred yards shop with its light wind or no wind,
- 39:53Speaker 1: and I got a good rest. All that kind of stuff. Um.
- 39:58Speaker 1: I took a three two yard shot the other day
- 40:02Speaker 1: and was it was still a good hit, a little
- 40:08Speaker 1: higher than I would have liked out much further. You know,
- 40:12Speaker 1: it could have been real bad. It wasn't where I
- 40:16Speaker 1: wasn't where I called my shot. It was within inches
- 40:18Speaker 1: of where I called my shot, maybe six inches of
- 40:20Speaker 1: where I called my shot. Eight inches could have been trouble.
- 40:23Speaker 1: Just do me a favor and talk about your set
- 40:25Speaker 1: up for that shot. And this was a real hunting situation,
- 40:28Speaker 1: heart thumping hunting situation. Let's just say I was already
- 40:32Speaker 1: setting up for that shot before I even I found
- 40:35Speaker 1: an animal from a long Let's say I found an
- 40:36Speaker 1: animal from eight hundred yards away, maybe identified a ridge
- 40:42Speaker 1: that what was it? It It was six something, wasn't it? Yeah? Yeah,
- 40:47Speaker 1: because we were guessing the shot was going to be
- 40:49Speaker 1: anywhere from three fifty, so it was like six when
- 40:52Speaker 1: we found him. So I found an animal six yards away.
- 40:56Speaker 1: The next ridge I thought would probably give me a
- 40:59Speaker 1: nice shot at it. It was a mule deer buck
- 41:03Speaker 1: who's kind of running the door. They looked pretty settled in.
- 41:06Speaker 1: I wasn't. It wasn't like a race. I wasn't racing
- 41:08Speaker 1: the deer. It wasn't like the deer was traveling and
- 41:10Speaker 1: I was trying to race it to a meeting point.
- 41:15Speaker 1: I was already thinking about my shot the minute I
- 41:19Speaker 1: had to go across the little galie and climb up
- 41:21Speaker 1: the other side. And I was thinking about my shot
- 41:23Speaker 1: the minute I hit the bottom of the goalie. I
- 41:25Speaker 1: didn't run up that hill. I went up that hill
- 41:28Speaker 1: at a very slow pace because I was gonna get
- 41:31Speaker 1: to the top of that hill, and I wasn't gonna
- 41:33Speaker 1: be winded, and I wasn't gonna be shaky from exertion.
- 41:39Speaker 1: So I was already thinking, if I get up there,
- 41:42Speaker 1: I'm not gonna rush this. It's gonna be a long shot.
- 41:45Speaker 1: I'm gonna do everything right. I took my time, I
- 41:48Speaker 1: stopped to keep my breaths. I wanted to hit the
- 41:50Speaker 1: top of that hill fresh. I also, on my way
- 41:53Speaker 1: up that hill, ran through my head all the things
- 41:57Speaker 1: that fella could do to screw up the situation. With
- 41:59Speaker 1: the shot and what criteria needed to be met for
- 42:06Speaker 1: me to touch that trigger because it was a buck
- 42:08Speaker 1: that I very much wanted to get. UM, and I
- 42:12Speaker 1: had set some parameters in my head, like what's what's
- 42:15Speaker 1: green and what's what's a green light? What's the red light?
- 42:18Speaker 1: When I get to the top of the hill, and
- 42:20Speaker 1: I had settled that in my mind. I wasn't leaving
- 42:23Speaker 1: it up to a moment by moment situation. Got to
- 42:26Speaker 1: the top of the hill. Um, I approached the crest
- 42:30Speaker 1: so that I had some rocks off to the side
- 42:32Speaker 1: of me to give a little contour to the hill,
- 42:35Speaker 1: and I had trees behind me to break up my outline.
- 42:39Speaker 1: I crawled up. I have a butt pad, I used.
- 42:41Speaker 1: I'm glassing. I had my butt pad out. I pushed
- 42:44Speaker 1: my backpack up ahead of me. I put my butt
- 42:47Speaker 1: pad on my back pad to help get everything pad
- 42:50Speaker 1: it out right. I moved out a half of my
- 42:52Speaker 1: hand and matted down some grass that I didn't like
- 42:55Speaker 1: being there. UM, and I got lie. I waited for
- 43:01Speaker 1: the deer to turn broadside, got lined up. I did
- 43:04Speaker 1: my little test where I'm lined up on it, and
- 43:06Speaker 1: I closed my eyes for a three count and then
- 43:09Speaker 1: opened my eyes back up and see if my cross
- 43:10Speaker 1: hairs have drifted off. That's a good one. I like that.
- 43:16Speaker 1: I can't remember who was just telling me that. I've
- 43:18Speaker 1: never heard that before in like an actual hunting situation. Yeah,
- 43:23Speaker 1: I remember this guy, and I'm trying to remember who was.
- 43:24Speaker 1: I was talking to a military shooter. Who is? It
- 43:28Speaker 1: doesn't matter. I was saw a new military shooter. Who
- 43:30Speaker 1: do use you do that to see if you're your
- 43:33Speaker 1: body's in a neutral position, you're torking it because you're,
- 43:36Speaker 1: like he said, he thinks you'll subconsciously tork to get on. Yeah.
- 43:40Speaker 1: So he closes his eyes and then opens and sees
- 43:46Speaker 1: if his thing is drifted because your body's working with
- 43:49Speaker 1: your eye and doing stuff. And he's like, for a
- 43:54Speaker 1: dead rest, it should be like, of course you can't
- 43:58Speaker 1: walk away, like in some way it's resting on you.
- 44:00Speaker 1: But if you're doing that little torque, you won't be
- 44:03Speaker 1: able to keep it up. You won't be able to
- 44:05Speaker 1: do it right when your eyes out on it because
- 44:07Speaker 1: you're holding it just so. So. He likes to close
- 44:12Speaker 1: open and if seats the cross air drifted. I even
- 44:14Speaker 1: did that, and could I ask about the red and
- 44:20Speaker 1: green light. I'm just curious about that. Oh just meaning,
- 44:24Speaker 1: I mean what they were? Okay, I had, I'll just
- 44:26Speaker 1: come out and say it. I had screwed up. I
- 44:27Speaker 1: had I missed an antalopen wyoming because I got up
- 44:31Speaker 1: to a spot where I was on the stock and
- 44:33Speaker 1: I got up in the head, in my head where
- 44:34Speaker 1: these animals were going to be and got up and
- 44:38Speaker 1: they weren't there, and like, what the hell happened? I
- 44:40Speaker 1: started thinking that misjudged where I was, I was on
- 44:43Speaker 1: the wrong hill, stood up and I was like started entertaining,
- 44:47Speaker 1: Like did I like totally misread the situation? They should
- 44:49Speaker 1: be right there? And all of a sudden antelope blows
- 44:51Speaker 1: at me and they were down below me and they
- 44:54Speaker 1: took off running and then they stopped and I didn't
- 44:59Speaker 1: I just it was two hundred fifty yards and I
- 45:02Speaker 1: didn't do my checklist and I just laid down and
- 45:06Speaker 1: like took a stupid shot and shot over an antelops
- 45:09Speaker 1: back and just hated myself for it. And when I
- 45:12Speaker 1: say a green light red light is like asking yourself, Okay,
- 45:15Speaker 1: what conditions need to be met here? You know, the
- 45:19Speaker 1: conditions with that buck the other day the conditions that
- 45:22Speaker 1: need to be met. As I was gonna be, I
- 45:25Speaker 1: was gonna be like, I'm either gonna do my checklist
- 45:26Speaker 1: and close my and do all that garbage, or I'm
- 45:29Speaker 1: not gonna shoot. I'll come back and try to find
- 45:31Speaker 1: the buck later. If he's gone, it's like gonna have
- 45:34Speaker 1: it be perfect um or he'll be fifty yards way.
- 45:38Speaker 1: And I don't worry about checklist because I could just
- 45:40Speaker 1: free handed. But the other privfect question is, like, this
- 45:44Speaker 1: is something that comes up all the time too. If
- 45:46Speaker 1: you're shoting at an angle, yeah, the only thing that
- 45:47Speaker 1: matter is the horizontal distance. If you somehow let's say
- 45:53Speaker 1: you're in a tree. Let's say you're in a tree
- 45:55Speaker 1: that's two yards. You're in the tree staying two hundred
- 45:58Speaker 1: yards off the ground, and there's a deer at the
- 46:02Speaker 1: foot of the tree. You're holding for a one ft shot.
- 46:10Speaker 1: You're not holding for two shot. Horizontal distance is the
- 46:13Speaker 1: only thing that matters. That's another part of this question
- 46:18Speaker 1: that anyone had to add to that. I was always
- 46:21Speaker 1: and I was misled maybe, but like if the animals
- 46:24Speaker 1: below you, you aim high, and the same with if
- 46:28Speaker 1: the that's just you do need a picture the animal's position,
- 46:31Speaker 1: and what the line of travel of the bullet is
- 46:33Speaker 1: gonna be through the animal's position. You got a factor
- 46:36Speaker 1: that in, but you'd aim as if you were shooting
- 46:39Speaker 1: perfectly flat. You use your set, your knowledge of anatomy
- 46:44Speaker 1: to figure out where on that thing you want to
- 46:46Speaker 1: hit in order to get through where you're trying to hit.
- 46:48Speaker 1: If you're directly above an animal and you want to
- 46:50Speaker 1: hit through the lungs, you're gonna be burned a hole
- 46:52Speaker 1: down through its backbone, between its shoulder blades. If you
- 46:55Speaker 1: were somehow in some situation I can't imagine, directly underneath it,
- 46:59Speaker 1: you're gonna be sending a bullet up, yeah, into its
- 47:02Speaker 1: stern um like whatever. You know from anatomy where you
- 47:04Speaker 1: wanted to travel through, and you know from anatomy at
- 47:07Speaker 1: what point on the outside of the animal you're trying
- 47:10Speaker 1: to place your arrow or bullet. But to get to
- 47:15Speaker 1: that point you hold only for horizontal distance. Vertical distance
- 47:19Speaker 1: doesn't matter because it's that's is how gravity affects the travel.
- 47:23Speaker 1: You want to add that, you know, I just want
- 47:26Speaker 1: to say that. You know, Steve goes through this checklist
- 47:30Speaker 1: and he's thinking about the shot and it's a four
- 47:32Speaker 1: hundred yard shot. Four hundred yard shot is a long shot.
- 47:37Speaker 1: I'm saying it shot of four hundred yards, but I
- 47:39Speaker 1: mean it is a long shot. And there's a lot
- 47:42Speaker 1: of people talking out there right now and have been
- 47:45Speaker 1: for a long time about how they don't start getting
- 47:49Speaker 1: serious until they're out seven eight a thousand yards UM.
- 47:54Speaker 1: And for some reason, I find it entertaining that they
- 47:57Speaker 1: always mentioned the caliber that they're shooting, like it's some
- 47:59Speaker 1: sort of validation of being able to shoot those distances.
- 48:03Speaker 1: That if you aren't calculating and thinking about these mental
- 48:10Speaker 1: checklists and what has to happen, what criteria have to
- 48:13Speaker 1: be met in order for you to touch that trigger,
- 48:17Speaker 1: you should not be taking those shots, regardless of what
- 48:21Speaker 1: sort of size cannon you're packing around the world, because
- 48:25Speaker 1: you don't know. There's a couple of things. One of
- 48:26Speaker 1: the best things about long range shooting UM. One of
- 48:30Speaker 1: the best arguments against long range shooting came from a guy,
- 48:34Speaker 1: one of the guys I know who is one of
- 48:35Speaker 1: the most capable long range shooters at a range. Well,
- 48:39Speaker 1: he was talking about it's something you don't hear many
- 48:41Speaker 1: people discuss, is the amount of time that lapses between
- 48:45Speaker 1: when that ball leaves the barrel and when it arrives
- 48:48Speaker 1: at its destination yards down the line, and that amount
- 48:52Speaker 1: of time is enough time for an animal to take
- 48:55Speaker 1: a couple of steps. You cannot pull that bullet back.
- 49:02Speaker 1: You don't know what the so you got like the wind,
- 49:04Speaker 1: You might know what the wind's doing where you're at,
- 49:06Speaker 1: but hunting in the mountains are hunting an open country
- 49:08Speaker 1: around topography and other things. You don't know what the
- 49:10Speaker 1: wind is doing on its way there, and what the
- 49:13Speaker 1: winds doing at the animal. And you don't know that
- 49:16Speaker 1: that thing is not gonna step now. The bullet is
- 49:19Speaker 1: gonna get there before the sound gets there. But a
- 49:21Speaker 1: lot can happen in a couple of seconds. And this
- 49:26Speaker 1: is one of my favorite subjects to talk about. And
- 49:29Speaker 1: it can go on and on and and it's it's
- 49:32Speaker 1: a lifetime of podcasts worth of talking about it. Because
- 49:36Speaker 1: there's the recovery. Recovery it's a lot easier a hundred
- 49:40Speaker 1: yards than it is it yards. Uh, it's a dense topic.
- 49:46Speaker 1: I don't like it. The I don't like the idea
- 49:49Speaker 1: of taking super long shots. Uh. You know a good
- 49:52Speaker 1: way to not worry about all this stuff is just
- 49:56Speaker 1: getting closer. But it is a thing, man, the thing
- 50:00Speaker 1: that it comes up all the time. And I think
- 50:02Speaker 1: you got every day you got more and more guys
- 50:05Speaker 1: who have bought a gun, and then also they think
- 50:08Speaker 1: they're Joe long Ranger, and you just there are so
- 50:13Speaker 1: many problems with thousand yards shooting about where was that thing?
- 50:18Speaker 1: How how able are you to walk over and show
- 50:22Speaker 1: me where that animal is standing and show me that
- 50:24Speaker 1: there is there is not any sign of a hit, hair, blood, whatever.
- 50:29Speaker 1: I need to know where it was standing. And I
- 50:31Speaker 1: can recall lots of times that I've seen shots on
- 50:35Speaker 1: animals at very close distance where that animal had almost
- 50:41Speaker 1: an imperceptible reaction to a fatal hit at two hundred yards,
- 50:49Speaker 1: two fifty yards, fifty yards almost imperceptible. You could almost
- 50:55Speaker 1: not tell that that thing got touched. And if you're
- 50:59Speaker 1: telling me that you can shoot a thousand yards, and
- 51:05Speaker 1: I mean, you gotta follow up on your shots. I mean,
- 51:08Speaker 1: just what's pushed a lot of the super long range shooting.
- 51:12Speaker 1: His TV shows a deal long range shooting is like
- 51:14Speaker 1: popularized it and what they don't show and I know
- 51:16Speaker 1: it's from I mean, like like I work in the industry,
- 51:19Speaker 1: so I know things and talk to people, and you know,
- 51:22Speaker 1: I just know things. A lot of people don't A
- 51:24Speaker 1: big part of that stuff that they that they just
- 51:26Speaker 1: don't include. They don't include wound loss, and they don't
- 51:29Speaker 1: include the part where they're shooting at rocks and ship
- 51:32Speaker 1: at the same distance to try to see. Like they'll
- 51:35Speaker 1: pick a rock a couple hundred yards away from whatever
- 51:38Speaker 1: they're shooting at and have a spotter, and the spot
- 51:41Speaker 1: would be like, oh, you're three ft high on that rock.
- 51:44Speaker 1: Conditions are such that your three ft high on that rock,
- 51:47Speaker 1: and then they'll move over and shoot at the animal.
- 51:49Speaker 1: At those distances, the animal can't really put it together
- 51:52Speaker 1: what's going on. And so it's like a common thing
- 51:55Speaker 1: is that takes some practice shots at stuff to try
- 51:57Speaker 1: to get honed in with a spotter on how many
- 52:01Speaker 1: m o a you need to just for and then
- 52:03Speaker 1: move over and start directing fire towards their critter. My
- 52:06Speaker 1: buddies were just hunting moose and they were camping by
- 52:08Speaker 1: these guys who were bragging up their recent cariboo hunt,
- 52:10Speaker 1: and they were shooting at some cariboo there were six
- 52:12Speaker 1: hundred yards away, and then they were halfway through shooting
- 52:15Speaker 1: into her to Caribo when they realized that there was
- 52:16Speaker 1: a guy that was three yards away from those Cariboo
- 52:18Speaker 1: putting a stock on them while they're blasting the way
- 52:20Speaker 1: at the Cariboo. Didn't notice him, didn't notice him. There's
- 52:27Speaker 1: another guy down in Arizona, and I did not have
- 52:29Speaker 1: fun in the woods. I met the people involved this.
- 52:31Speaker 1: There was a guy sneaking up on a black bear
- 52:33Speaker 1: of the bow and arrow in Arizona, and the guy
- 52:35Speaker 1: started shooting at the black bear from across the canyon
- 52:37Speaker 1: and hit the bow hunt in the belt buckle with
- 52:38Speaker 1: a rifle, almost killed the guy. I have a few
- 52:41Speaker 1: years ago, Floyd, and have know that guy alright, can
- 52:45Speaker 1: of play that was out of because I already I'm
- 52:50Speaker 1: already talking about a couple of long range pokes I took. Um.
- 52:55Speaker 1: I wanna switch that over to shotguns a small game
- 52:58Speaker 1: because I think the reason that we like to take
- 53:00Speaker 1: short shots or keep it within our you know discipline,
- 53:04Speaker 1: you know level with big game and our rifles, is
- 53:06Speaker 1: because we want to be like our personal ethics towards
- 53:10Speaker 1: the animal right to make it a clean one shot killed. Right.
- 53:14Speaker 1: Yet it seems like when we switch over to small
- 53:16Speaker 1: game and shotguns and flying birds. All of a sudden,
- 53:20Speaker 1: it's like, well, it's okay that I shot twenty times
- 53:23Speaker 1: today and I killed two birds. It's like you're missing
- 53:27Speaker 1: your wounding. Yes, we get a couple. So it does
- 53:34Speaker 1: doesn't seem like we're is it. So you've talked about
- 53:37Speaker 1: it where you give a level of respect to respect
- 53:40Speaker 1: to big game animals that are six, seven, eight, ten,
- 53:43Speaker 1: twelve years old that have different kind of fecundity. Okay,
- 53:49Speaker 1: things that um weren't a much more limited harvest than
- 53:52Speaker 1: you do. To say, a cotton tail rabbit that's capable
- 53:55Speaker 1: of putting off twenty for babies in a year has
- 53:58Speaker 1: a life expectancy of about war months. Um yeah, yeah,
- 54:04Speaker 1: I could see that. If you were talking to an ethicist,
- 54:08Speaker 1: which is the role you're playing right now, he would say,
- 54:11Speaker 1: why does a elk warrant this great level of respect
- 54:16Speaker 1: about clean kills? You're virtually certain you're gonna make a
- 54:21Speaker 1: clean kill, whereas a quail you're like, what the hell
- 54:24Speaker 1: I am? Lam Lam Yeah, that's a good question, man.
- 54:29Speaker 1: Just bring up next thing you should send into question
- 54:31Speaker 1: to the needed your podcast. That's not that's you should
- 54:37Speaker 1: formally present your question because it's it's a valid question.
- 54:41Speaker 1: Here's one here I don't want to answer, but it's
- 54:43Speaker 1: a good question. We'll wrap it up with this question. Yeah,
- 54:47Speaker 1: that's where we're at. You got to do come more quickly.
- 54:50Speaker 1: We're at an hour. Okay, I want to do a
- 54:54Speaker 1: question I don't want to any is that including the
- 54:56Speaker 1: uh yeah, small break that we had. All right, here's
- 55:00Speaker 1: a question I'm not gonna answer, but it's a good question.
- 55:04Speaker 1: Have we come to a point where a safari there's
- 55:06Speaker 1: an outdated form of hunting. Here's a question I do
- 55:09Speaker 1: want to answer. The meat Okay, they always start with
- 55:13Speaker 1: a little they they fluff you. This one starts with
- 55:17Speaker 1: a little fluff. Then he goes on to say, um,
- 55:21Speaker 1: oh no, no, it's not a fluff. The Meat Eater
- 55:24Speaker 1: podcast have given out great information on how to hunt
- 55:26Speaker 1: Western states as a non resident, but I was wondering
- 55:30Speaker 1: if they could address Westerners going out east for a
- 55:35Speaker 1: white tail hunt. Great question. We never talked about this
- 55:39Speaker 1: because we're because me and Yanni Calian's from Callahan. You're
- 55:43Speaker 1: from your Garretts, Montana born Callahan's Montana Borne. You tell okay,
- 55:48Speaker 1: because me and Yanni are from Michigan. Our focus is
- 55:50Speaker 1: on getting out here, out, getting out west and getting
- 55:52Speaker 1: after it. But let's say the other boys here, Uh,
- 55:56Speaker 1: we're warnering like, well, how do you go east and
- 55:57Speaker 1: do the kind of hunt you guys used to grow
- 55:58Speaker 1: up hunting. Um? So, for my understanding, you in some
- 56:05Speaker 1: states get multiple tags. Um. It takes a long time
- 56:10Speaker 1: to draw deer tag out west. Yeah, so dude out
- 56:15Speaker 1: west wants to go white tail hunt. Everbody's always talking
- 56:17Speaker 1: about how to live out east and come out west hunt.
- 56:19Speaker 1: What about a guy that wants to go out west
- 56:22Speaker 1: and go east hunt? I would say this, I'm I'm
- 56:25Speaker 1: I'm assuming you're not gonna you want to do it?
- 56:27Speaker 1: Do it yourself hunt? If not, you know, we asked,
- 56:33Speaker 1: if you're going with a guy, you don't do anything
- 56:35Speaker 1: but make sure you got your underwearing socks packed though. Yeah,
- 56:38Speaker 1: oh yeah, you're right, I was. Yeah, even in you
- 56:40Speaker 1: probably send someone to get them for you. Yeah. I
- 56:42Speaker 1: don't know if it'll be so much to do it yourself.
- 56:44Speaker 1: We can do it themselves. It will be more of
- 56:46Speaker 1: a public versus private is because there's a lot less
- 56:48Speaker 1: public land back there. Yeah. So I would say this
- 56:52Speaker 1: as far as tags go, generally, I'm generalizing generally a
- 56:58Speaker 1: nonresident I mean, and I mean way generally, because there's
- 57:02Speaker 1: only a couple of stays. But this isn't true. Generally,
- 57:04Speaker 1: a non resident in the Eastern US can go into
- 57:08Speaker 1: a licensed dealer and get a general season buck tag
- 57:15Speaker 1: or get a general season tag that would be good
- 57:18Speaker 1: for any deer with a bow and good for a
- 57:20Speaker 1: buck with a rifle. You could probably kill several dolls
- 57:25Speaker 1: if you wanted to. In some states you can kill
- 57:27Speaker 1: several bucks if you wanted to. It's generally over the
- 57:30Speaker 1: counter hunting in the East for white til deer with
- 57:33Speaker 1: long seasons and both seasons to start in late September
- 57:36Speaker 1: early October, and rifle seasons that are generally run around
- 57:39Speaker 1: for a couple of weeks in November. And one got
- 57:41Speaker 1: a problem with that. Okay, Michigan where I grew up
- 57:45Speaker 1: at the time I was growing up, both season started
- 57:47Speaker 1: October one. You could hunt with your bow up till
- 57:50Speaker 1: December thirty one. They even had some late seasons that
- 57:53Speaker 1: were good for after that, and then you had a
- 57:55Speaker 1: ten day rifle season, same deer tag with bow. Was
- 58:00Speaker 1: it any deer tag with gun. It was a buck tag.
- 58:04Speaker 1: You could also go buy one or two or more
- 58:07Speaker 1: dough tags every year to use with your rifle or
- 58:10Speaker 1: your bowl, so you don't need to do a whole
- 58:12Speaker 1: lot of plane in the head, the old preference point
- 58:14Speaker 1: and all that stuff, except for like Kansas, the only
- 58:16Speaker 1: Eastern states that I know of, which isn't even the East.
- 58:18Speaker 1: Rely Yeah, well Kansas, I put in it for white
- 58:21Speaker 1: tail points there, Like I paid twenty five dollars a
- 58:23Speaker 1: year for a point, and then I know that I
- 58:26Speaker 1: will also does I think to draw like the good
- 58:29Speaker 1: you know rifle December tag and I believe it takes
- 58:32Speaker 1: non resident about four years. Okay, but what if Garrett
- 58:36Speaker 1: and I to use the kind of east first as
- 58:41Speaker 1: wells to Montana Hicks wanting to go out? Yeah, I say, Garrett,
- 58:45Speaker 1: let's do this. What do you say? They grab us
- 58:48Speaker 1: some beer, hop on a plane and head for Wisconsin
- 58:51Speaker 1: and try to get a couple of white tails. So, okay,
- 58:55Speaker 1: we land in some someplace in Wisconsin, walk Milwaukee, Madison,
- 59:05Speaker 1: We get properly stocked up on provisions, new Glaris, beer. Okay,
- 59:18Speaker 1: we got are We're legal, We're got our tags, got
- 59:23Speaker 1: um licenses, and how do we then go about finding
- 59:30Speaker 1: a place to go? That's what I'm gonna talk about next.
- 59:33Speaker 1: What do we have to do to be prepared? Like
- 59:35Speaker 1: do we have to pack tree stands? So I'm gonna
- 59:37Speaker 1: talk about next. If I was in this situation, I
- 59:45Speaker 1: would And this is not the same advice I'd give
- 59:48Speaker 1: to someone from the East going west, because you have
- 59:51Speaker 1: in the East, you have a lot a lot less
- 59:55Speaker 1: public land, and you have a lot more people vying
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: for that land. You got Western states that are fifty
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: sixty seventy federally owned, state owned, plenty of public land.
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: They got populations that are less than more most Eastern
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: US cities. Okay, there's a lot of ground to go
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: around in the East. That's not the case it takes.
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: I'm generalizing. And there's guys like Chris Eberhardt has written
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: books about do it yourself Eastern white tail Hunt and
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: how to find public land Eastern white Tills. But he's
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: an expert at and he devoted his life to it.
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: Um For an Easterner to come out Western hunt, you
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: just gotta have some gur, right, you gotta have a
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: little bit of gir half a brain and know how
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: to read a map, and you're gonna find public land
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: hunting opportunities in the East. I'm sorry, And there's gonna
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: be a million guys, not million, but a lot of guys.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: Canna be like, oh, that's not true. It takes a
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: little bit of It takes some to have a successful hunt.
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: If you gotta eek to hunt ten days to hunt,
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: some local knowledge goes a long long way in even
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: trying to crack the door on public land white tail
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: hunting east of the Mississippi. It can be done, but
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: it's tough. And believe me, I grew up doing it,
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: you know, but my dad had done it before. You know.
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: It's like we'd like new guys. It's like, it's hard.
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: It's hard to just roll in and start doing it
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: unless you're a very good You're very good with maps,
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: You're very resourceful. You understand the system, how to like
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: identify chunks of land that other guys aren't hunting, how
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: to identify chunks land that other guys might not even know.
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: Our public I'll point out, we have a ton of
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: information on this very thing. And the complete guy to hunting,
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: butcher and cooking wild game, like how to find public
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: land that people don't realize as public high the holes.
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: We talked about this for a long time over dinner
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: last night. Stuff like that access and walking up a
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: navigable stream in order to get to a state section
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: that you can't get to via road, but you can
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: get to it if you stay below a high water
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: mark in a river and weight up with waiters. That
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: kind of sneaky stuff is good. If I was out
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: west I wanted to go east deer hunt, I would
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: start really just asking a lot of questions and talking
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: to a lot of people and trying friends and friends
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: and colleagues and family and and just kind of feeling
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: out for a crew of guys that likes to hunt,
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: and they are gonna throw you a little bit of information.
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: What about two that some states in the eastern Midwest
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: slug only like Maryland right now, And I guess you'd
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: figure that out on southern half of Michigan or southern
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: third of Michigan. It's like that. So yeah, that's just
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: like that's like a legal thing you have to figure out, Like, yeah,
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: you have all kinds of legal requirements you gotta figure out. Um.
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: But I think on the land thing I think that
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: you could if you just love to hunt white tails. Well,
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: you know, I'm kind of contradicting myself, man, because one
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: time me, I was living in Montana and me and
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: to my both my brothers and another body of ours
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: went down to Alabama to hunt deer in January and
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: we hunted Tuskegee National Forest for about a week. We
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: all killed a buck. But my other brother was going
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: to grad school at Auburn and had dabbled around in
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: the area a little bit, so he had kind of
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: done little groundward. We had seven days a hunt, but
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: he already had a like a working knowledge of an area.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: What you might do and this is like this gets
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: in out of the realm of possibility. You might fly
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: out if there's some way to do it, fly out
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: a month before season and spend a few days figuring
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: stuff out, or just agree that you're gonna do like
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: an annual thing and get to know an area. But
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: I would think the best bet would be too just
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: to really pursue any leads you can through friends, family, friends, colleagues,
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: your old ladies, family, and just try to find someone
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: on the ground there who can give you some up
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: to date information on private land connections. Guys who are
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: and there's always guys are going to get rid of here.
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: But they don't want to just open up the gates
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: and let a bunch of you who's in there with guns.
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: They're trying to be a little bit you know, smart
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: about who's on their property. Work. Those are working from
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: a guy who would be like, yeah, man, you know,
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: I'll help you out and maybe someday you'll help me
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: out and I come out to hunt your place. I
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: think to remember about Eastern White Tales is that you
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: don't need huge chunks of land to have a successful hunt.
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: Um My dad's got somebody that has I think ten
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: or twelve acres in southern Indiana and he kills the
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: deer on it every year. You know. Yeah, but no,
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: but he didn't just fly in from out of town
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: and find it. No, no, no no. But my point is
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: is that like, yeah, so he's he has the knowledge
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: you know that those ten acres, you know, produce a deer.
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: My point is that there's a lot of um private
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: land back east that can uh for. I feel like
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: leases in trespass fees sound like this huge amount of
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: money always where sometimes maybe just access forty or eighty acres.
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: It could be plenty in you know ground to hunt
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: some white tails. You might really get into that for
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: a couple hundred bucks. You know, if you're already gonna
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: spend a couple of hundred on your tag, it's like
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: kicked down a couple of hundred bucks. And a lot
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: of times that comes with some lodging. You might be
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: able to staying a little cabin and have eighty acres
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: of private land hunt for a couple hundred dollars. So
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: I would say, though a couple of dudes from Montana
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: cover art pro mun Foods think it'd be more This
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: is the bold statement. I think it'd be more daunting
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: for a guy born raised let's say, in Montana. Lit't
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: say because we're an idhole guy born raised in Idaho.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: If he said, I got seven days, I'm gonna go
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: out on a d I Y do it yourself whitetail
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: hunt in Illinois public land, never been there before, and
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: get a buck. Meanwhile, a guy in Illinois said I'm
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: gonna go out to Idaho d I Y public land
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: and get a buck. I bet my money on the
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: guy standing in Illinois who's going to Idaho rather than
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: the guy in Idaho going to Illinois. I would put
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: my money on him, all other things being equal, all
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: other things being equal, and I said, like, who's gonna
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: get the buck? I'd be like, the guy going to
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: Idaho is gonna get the bucks. He's got a lot
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: of land that you can just go in access right now. Yeah,
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: seven days of walking, you're but but you're gonna go
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: to Illinois and you go there to day before and like, man,
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: there's dear all over this little state game management area
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: along this creek that's a hundred acres. And then he
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: comes back on open Danner's fourteen trucks in the parking lot. Yeah,
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: you know, every where he goes, there's some guys shine
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: in a flashlight that and be like, hey, I'm over here, man,
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: I'm over here. I've heard that story so many times. Well,
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: just like I mean, I see somebody parked at a
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: trailhead here, Well, better go to the next trailhead. Yeah,
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: even though I'm not I'm not gonna hunt around some
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: dickhead in the woods. I'll go to the next trailhead.
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: All right, One last question, have you ever hunted Roosevelt Elp? Nope,
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: all right, we need to find Oh I forgot one thing.
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: Uh y give us an update on on Hunt Eat
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: T shirts. Oh man. Now you can go to hunt
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: eat dot com and buy a Wisconsin Hunt Eat T shirt.
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: You can buy an Alaska Hunt Eat T shirt Idaho? Now, yeah, no, cal,
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: it's a weird looking state. It's hard to make a
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: shirt with state down there. Um hunty? Oh can did
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: I let the cat out of the bag. I've always
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: maintained that I have no connection to hunt eating. I
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: don't except that I'm friends with Yanni. Um, he doesn't
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: give me anything once time asked the time a couple
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: of flies for yellow Perch never even tied him. So
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: it's like it's like the opposite of meat own Yanni
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: a favor. So I don't want to think I'm plugging
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: Yanni's T shirts for personal game because he won't even
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: time me. Like the stupidest look of fly on the planet.
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: He won't even tie it for me. Um, just a
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: little bucktail on the red little head on it. Uh So, yeah,
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: I have nothing to gain. But Yanni is working on
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: a meat Eater or hunt Eat T shirt and more
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: than likely by the time you listen to this podcast.
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: Those will be at the Meat Eater Emerged store. Yes, right,
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: Like a little cartoon bubble coming out of Moose's mouth
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: says hunt Eat that he's gonna call. He's gonna hang
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: up and call the designer, be like, hold stop, get
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: a little speed bumpers. Got it? Um? What all states
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: you got, Hunty? Colorado, Montana, Wisconsin, Alaska, Texas. Then we
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: have a couple of generic hunt Eat. Yeah, so it
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: doesn't matter what we're staying. But I want to point
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: out that it seems to be slightly randomized what states
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: you decided to do and not. Is there right? We
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: put a lot of thought into what states we're deciding
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: to do. Well, you haven't done the states with the
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: most licensed hunters. No, we haven't, but we've thought about that.
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: But we've been doing the like most requests, and we
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: look at where where are you know traffic comes from? Oh,
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: so you're being scientific about it a little bit. You're
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: being a number to give me a second to do
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: my Hunt to Eat pitch on this. Well, you always
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: asked me to and I never really have it. Your
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: concluding thought, you're a lot of concluding thought. Your concluding
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: thought could be your pitch already use mine. My concluding
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: thought was your T shirts. So you're concluding thought, can
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: continue mine and do your pitch. I get to go now, Yeah, yeah,
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: thank you. Um, if you haven't gone on the website yet,
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: hunt to Eat spawned from us just wanting to make
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: some cool hunting T shirts because we just like I
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: was sick of going to Cabela's and Sportsman's Warehouse and
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: just being like, man, I'm a hunter and I want
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: to wear some hunting T shirts, but there's just nothing
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: in this store that I want to wear, you know,
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: And I had a lot of friends or like the
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: happiness is a gut pile T shirt? Yeah exactly, It's
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: not my thing. So as kind of an answer to that,
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: we felt like there's this white space, were like, let's
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: make some hunting T shirt that's just a little bit hipper.
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: And what I want to get to is, I say
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: we and that's be because it's my brother and I
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: that do this Matting who a lot of times with
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: us here on meta or shoots, but he puts a
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: lot of effort into this. So um, maybe going forward,
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: you can say go ahead and give you a pitch
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: for your you and your brother's T shirt company. Let
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: me get this straight. You're more worried about giving credit
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: out where credit is due than just selling the T shirts.
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: That's noble. That's a good man right there, that's a
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: good man. I have kind of thought was going that
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: was getting ready to each other. That rounds about till
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: the one of the first conversations. I've been sitting here
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: smelling mule here very strongly, and you know I don't.
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: I always kind of get a little dirty on my
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: on my pants, in particular when uh um Field dressing
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: a mule deer. But it just dawned on me that
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: possibly why that mule your smell is so strong is
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: that I dressed basically dressed the mule deer up in
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: the T shirt that I'm wearing. Now, do you have
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: the T shirt back on? Yeah? Black where his black
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: beart repellent right now? So the black bear took the
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: shirt off, the deer got it back on. I didn't
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: bring that many shirts, so yes, I'm wearing one of
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: your shirts. Yeah, and I gave Garrett the shirt. We
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: share T shirts. You got any concluding thoughts? We're backpacked
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: and we're all Chuly one what's going on in first light, Kelly?
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: So many things. We've got all sorts of people in
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: there these days, and it's fun. Products are getting better
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: and new stuff even cooler than before. And I was
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: in there. Can I say something about something a new
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: project I saw is it's probably hush hush. I just
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: saw some really cool looking stuff in there. I won't
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: say no, go for it. That new battle Clauva. Oh yeah,
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: the new min it's new mats are cool. But you
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: guys are using like a what do they call that,
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: like a high pile fleece that's actually wool. That's woolen there. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: it's just it's super soft. Same stuff that's inside, same
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: stuff at the inside. The mints there we took two BC.
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: Oh that's wool in there. Yeah really yeah, that's why
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: it kind of balls up a little bit. I like
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: telling you, if you're called by the Hunter, you can
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: be stoked. Adam. Concluding thoughts, um, I don't know. This
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: has been quite an interesting trip with you all. So
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: it's been fun. You can come back if you guys
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: have me for sure, let's talk about it. Yeah you
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: didn't complain, no, no, And I I ran around with Calahands,
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: so I had plenty to complain about. I've never heard
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: that so succinctly put before Garrett, some of the best
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: country to be sweaty and hurt knees and hiking in.
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: You can see a lot. It's been a cool, cool trip.
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: But I mean concluding thoughts about right then, right now,
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: like any concluding thoughts based on the the podcast. Keep

- 1:14:48Speaker 1: Question of the Day deal and answer questions every day,
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: So answer three and sixty five questions a year. Yanni
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: thinks we gotta send everyone who gets a question picked
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: a T shirt. But that's a hell of a lot
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: of T shirts to be mailing around. Um, we'll see
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: you might do that, all right, take care
