- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's a new week.
- 0:15It's Monday, it's the 9th of June.
- 0:18And I'm glad to have your company.
- 0:19Thank you for inviting me in. Thank you for saying, come on
- 0:22Sean, let's crack open that Bible together and read some
- 0:26more of God's word. And today we begin.
- 0:30You've heard of a dialogue right?
- 0:31Where two people are talking. Does that.
- 0:34Mean that when it's three people, it's a trilogue.
- 0:37Well, that just sounds like you want to give a log a try, but.
- 0:40If we go all the way up to 10, that is what this next part of
- 0:45the book of Deuteronomy is called.
- 0:46It's called a Decalogue where Moses begins the speech which is
- 0:50going to cover the vast majority of the rest of Deuteronomy as he
- 0:55pulls apart the 10 commandments and what they look like living
- 0:59that way, following the spirit of that commandment to shape our
- 1:02lives. Not just saying this is a rule,
- 1:04but saying this is a way of life and this is something that we
- 1:07now believe, or this is a, a promise that you can make to God
- 1:11in the way that you choose to live.
- 1:13And so today Moses gives a sweeping overview of all ten of
- 1:17those commandments. And then the rest of the week,
- 1:19we're actually going to hone in on the 1st commandment, which is
- 1:23about having no other gods beside our God.
- 1:26How fantastic. You ready to dive in with me,
- 1:30you Ripper? Let's do it.
- 1:32Let's read together. Deuteronomy chapter 5.
- 1:44Moses called all the people of Israel together and said, listen
- 1:48carefully, Israel. Hear the decrees and regulations
- 1:52I'm giving you today so you may learn them and obey them.
- 1:57The Lord our God made a covenant with us at Mount Sinai.
- 2:01The Lord did not make this covenant with our ancestors, but
- 2:05with all of us who are alive today.
- 2:08At the mountain. The Lord spoke to you face to
- 2:11face from the heart of the fire. I stood as an intermediary
- 2:16between you and the Lord, for you were afraid of the fire and
- 2:19did not want to approach the mountain.
- 2:22He spoke to me, and I passed his words on to you.
- 2:25This is what he said. I am the Lord your God, who
- 2:30rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your
- 2:33slavery. You must not have any other God
- 2:37but me. You must not make for yourself
- 2:41an idol of any kind, or an image of anything in the heavens or on
- 2:45the earth or in the sea. You must not bow down to them or
- 2:50worship them. For I, the Lord your God, am a
- 2:54jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any
- 2:57other gods. I lay the sins of the parents
- 3:01upon their children. The entire family is affected,
- 3:05even children in the 3rd and 4th generations of those who reject
- 3:08Me. But I will lavish unfailing love
- 3:12for 1000 generations on those who love Me and obey My
- 3:17commands. You must not misuse the name of
- 3:21the Lord your God. The Lord will not let you go
- 3:24unpunished if you misuse His name.
- 3:28Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the Lord
- 3:32your God has commanded you. You have 6 days each week for
- 3:35your ordinary work, but the 7th day is a Sabbath day of rest
- 3:40dedicated to the Lord your God. On that day, no one in your
- 3:45household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and
- 3:49daughters, your male and female servants, your oxen and donkeys
- 3:54and other livestock, and any foreigners living among you.
- 3:58All your male and female servants must rest as you do.
- 4:03Remember that you were once slaves in Egypt, but the Lord
- 4:06your God brought you out with his strong hand and powerful
- 4:11arm. That is why the Lord your God
- 4:13has commanded you to rest on the Sabbath day.
- 4:18Honour your father and mother as the Lord your God commanded you.
- 4:22Then you will live a long, full life in the land the Lord your
- 4:26God is giving you. You must not murder.
- 4:30You must not commit adultery. You must not steal.
- 4:35You must not testify falsely against your neighbour.
- 4:39You must not covet your neighbour's wife.
- 4:42You must not covet your neighbour's house or land, male
- 4:45or female, servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that
- 4:49belongs to your neighbour. The Lord spoke these words to
- 4:53all of you assembled there at the foot of the mountain.
- 4:57He spoke with a loud voice from the heart of the fire,
- 5:00surrounded by clouds and deep darkness.
- 5:03This was all he said at that time, and he wrote his words on
- 5:072 stone tablets and gave them to me.
- 5:12But when you heard the voice from the heart of the darkness,
- 5:15while the mountain was blazing with fire, all your tribal
- 5:18leaders and elders came to me. They said, look, the Lord our
- 5:23God has shown us His glory and greatness, and we have heard His
- 5:27voice from the heart of the fire.
- 5:30Today. We have seen that God can speak
- 5:33to us humans and yet we live. But now why should we risk death
- 5:39again? If the Lord our God speaks to us
- 5:42again, we will certainly die and be consumed by this awesome
- 5:47fire. Can any living thing hear the
- 5:50voice of the living God from the heart of the fire as we did and
- 5:54yet survive? Go yourself and listen to what
- 5:57the Lord our God says. Then come and tell us everything
- 6:00He tells you and we will listen and obey.
- 6:05The Lord heard the request you made to me and He said, I've
- 6:10heard what the people said to you and they are right.
- 6:14Oh, that they would always have hearts like this, that they
- 6:17might fear me and obey all my commands.
- 6:21If they did, they and their descendants would prosper
- 6:25forever. Go and tell them.
- 6:28Return to your tents. But you stand here with me so I
- 6:32can give you all my commands, decrees, and regulations.
- 6:37You must teach them to the people so they can obey them in
- 6:40the land I'm giving them as their possession.
- 6:44So Moses told the people, you must be careful to obey all the
- 6:49commands of the Lord your God, following His instructions in
- 6:53every detail. Stay on the path that the Lord
- 6:56your God has commanded you to follow.
- 6:59Then you will live long and prosperous lives in the land you
- 7:03are about to enter and occupy. Our Lord, we hear in this
- 7:18reading that you are indeed the most powerful of all, and that
- 7:25it's even a remarkable thing for us just to hear your voice and
- 7:29survive it. Because then your voice is such
- 7:31raw power that it's enough to end the life of a human, A mere
- 7:36human who might be foolish enough to think they can listen
- 7:39to your words. Ah, but Lord, you find a way to
- 7:44communicate your truth with us. And Jesus, you are truth, and
- 7:49You brought that truth to us in a way that we can understand.
- 7:55Thank You that you, the awesome and creative God, have found a
- 8:00way to come to us and speak with us and even give us your Spirit
- 8:05to dwell in US so that your voice is just a natural part of
- 8:10our internal workings. Spirit, may your voice always be
- 8:17elevated, elevated to a place above all others, so that you
- 8:22can reign supreme not only in the broad cosmos, but also in
- 8:28our hearts and in our lives. So we commit ourselves to you,
- 8:32our awesome, mighty and incredible God who dwells here
- 8:38so close to us, and we pray all of this in the saving name of
- 8:43Jesus, Amen.
