- 0:10Some old friends facing our fears, laughing through the
- 0:13chaos and drinking some beers. So here's to the laughs, the
- 0:16crumbs and the cheers. All the awkward moments and
- 0:19we're still here 'cause in the end, we're just doing our thing.
- 0:22It's our crazy life. 01 more thing.
- 0:25One more thing. Welcome to Oh and one more
- 0:33thing, a podcast where 2 long time friends try to figure out
- 0:36what the heck is going on with this crazy thing called middle
- 0:39age. It's a mix of stories of how we
- 0:40navigate our lives and maybe some questionable advice.
- 0:43Some days we're wise, other days we're just trying to remember
- 0:46where the heck we left our phone.
- 0:47So join us as we laugh, groan, and maybe even learn a little
- 0:50something about surviving in the second-half of life.
- 0:53Oh, and one more thing. Hey, I'm Rob, welcome to one
- 1:07more. Thing.
- 1:07Hey everybody, I'm Brian. What is happening today,
- 1:10brother? It is a gorgeous fall day.
- 1:13Yeah, weather's getting a little crisp.
- 1:15Leaves are changing. Leaves are changing.
- 1:17I love it. Gorgeous out there gorgeous.
- 1:19How was how was your day today that.
- 1:20Was good. Yeah, a slow day at work, but it
- 1:22was OK. That's OK.
- 1:23That's OK once in a while. Did some laundry.
- 1:25Yeah, yeah. Made good.
- 1:26Made dinner tonight. Nice, what'd you make?
- 1:28We made a citrus chicken cutlet salad.
- 1:33It's amazing. That sounds wonderful.
- 1:35Is good. Not nearly as good as my dinner.
- 1:37No. What was your dinner?
- 1:38Well. My wife's out of town, yeah, so
- 1:40I had the classic Spaghettios. No, the peanut butter sandwich.
- 1:45That's so gross. Awesome.
- 1:46Not the peanut butter, the Spaghettios.
- 1:48Do you know which protein is in that?
- 1:50Yeah, I don't care because it's just gross.
- 1:52Not, not so good. I can't believe it's almost
- 1:54middish October. Crazy, right?
- 1:56Where has it gone? I know, yeah.
- 1:58Did you know that tomorrow is my wedding anniversary?
- 2:00I. Did know that?
- 2:02Yeah, do you know how many years?
- 2:03I don't know that. 30. 8 get out.
- 2:07Yeah, really. 3838 years. My God, that's forever.
- 2:10Don't you have a wedding anniversary coming up too?
- 2:12I. Do yes, it is.
- 2:13Well, I I do know this. It's 10 years.
- 2:15OK, good. So I'm very excited about that.
- 2:18Ask me what the day is. What's the day?
- 2:20I don't remember. Yeah, you do too.
- 2:21It's the week after mine it. Is week after years I'm I'm
- 2:24pretty sure it's October 17th. That would be correct.
- 2:27See Why Do you know that's on my calendar?
- 2:29OK, honey, if you're listening to this, just ignore this like
- 2:3110 seconds. Yes, Yeah, it is.
- 2:34The 17th is 10 years. We're super excited.
- 2:36I think we might try and do something special for our 10
- 2:39year anniversary. That's good.
- 2:40Might try and do some family pictures again, 'cause we got a
- 2:42whole bunch of family pictures at our wedding 10 years ago
- 2:45without me. We'd try and recreate that.
- 2:47Well, that'd be great the. Problem is all the kids are
- 2:49growing up now, so getting them all in one place is a challenge.
- 2:52So. They'll do it for you.
- 2:54Yeah, we'll figure it out. But yeah.
- 2:55Yeah. But 30-8 years, that's awesome.
- 2:57I mean, I think you guys are finally figured out the secret,
- 2:59right? Yeah, of course we did.
- 3:00Yeah, she's always right. And when she's wrong, she's
- 3:02still right. Rob, you're gonna get hit us in
- 3:06trouble. OK again honey that ignore the
- 3:08last 30 seconds of the. Podcast, go on with you like.
- 3:11So do you remember a couple of weeks ago we did a podcast.
- 3:14We were talking about the English language.
- 3:16Yeah, I remember. And towards the end, we talked
- 3:18about discussing the the current slang by today's youth.
- 3:21Yep. And it's funny.
- 3:22So on the radio this morning on my way to work, they're talking
- 3:24about the exact same thing. Really.
- 3:26I couldn't believe how timely we are.
- 3:27We are. Totally in in the know.
- 3:29We are totally on topic, right? Cool.
- 3:31Until I listen to what they're talking about.
- 3:33Oh, what? Are.
- 3:34They saying so you remember they're talking about, you know,
- 3:36Riz and no Cap and yeah. Then I heard.
- 3:38Standing on Business Today, I'm like, what's that one?
- 3:40Standing on business. That's apparently a term.
- 3:43I I don't know what that is. But here's the deal, they're all
- 3:45already outdated. So.
- 3:49So us last week thinking, Oh yeah, we're still on top of it.
- 3:51Yeah, last time we brought it up there already out of the
- 3:53lexicon. Ohh, wow.
- 3:54See, And then there's us. So.
- 3:55Bra is not a thing in bra. I'm sure I still hear Bra, but
- 4:00like, like, seriously, we use dude for like 10 years.
- 4:03Yeah, yeah, these last a week. Well, I think you just heard me
- 4:06say, cool, Yeah. So you know, I'm stuck in the
- 4:0980s. Absolutely.
- 4:10Absolutely. But today we're going to talk
- 4:12about life. Skills.
- 4:14Oh, life skills. I need some.
- 4:15Right, so specifically life skills that every man should
- 4:18have by the time they are middle-aged.
- 4:20Oh no, that's us. This sounds like something I'm
- 4:22not going to be able to measure up to.
- 4:24Oh, you'll be fine. OK, I'll give it a try.
- 4:27All right, Ready. Don't worry too much.
- 4:28I'm not going to judge you. Like, oh, I know you're going to
- 4:30be judging me. Not all the.
- 4:31Time, but yes, I, I will not. But seriously, it's it's things
- 4:34you should already know, or at least kind of know by now.
- 4:36Well, we'll soon find out, won't we?
- 4:38All right, here we go. OK wait, I just read this on
- 4:41Facebook today and I want to read it to you.
- 4:43OK, so perks of reaching old age.
- 4:45Oh, so I thought this was pretty funny.
- 4:48Right back up. I thought this was middle age.
- 4:50I'm sorry, perks of reaching middle age.
- 4:52There you go. #1 Yep, kidnappers are not very interested in you.
- 4:57It's. So true.
- 5:00They get careless about us. #2 In a hostage hostage situation,
- 5:05you're likely to be the first one to be released.
- 5:10Right. He can't run very fast anymore.
- 5:12Get rid of him. Right, he's old #3 no one
- 5:17expects you to run anywhere. Ever.
- 5:20True. True.
- 5:22Number four, people call it eight, 8:00 PM and ask did I
- 5:26wake you? That is true. #5 people no
- 5:31longer view you as hypochondriac.
- 5:34Everything is wrong. Everything is wrong.
- 5:36You know the first thing you talk about a coffee is.
- 5:38So what's wrong with you today, right?
- 5:40Exactly. Yeah, there were six.
- 5:42There's nothing left to learn the hard way.
- 5:44We've learned it all. We've learned it all.
- 5:46Well, we hope. We hope we have.
- 5:48Yeah #7 things you buy now won't wear out.
- 5:53True. OK. #8 You can eat supper at
- 5:564:30. Yes you can.
- 5:58I love eating at 4:30. And get a discount.
- 6:00I put mostly right. It's happy hour somewhere. #9
- 6:05you can live without sex, but not your glasses.
- 6:09That's yeah, that's that's not true.
- 6:12And #10 your your supply of brain cells is finally down to a
- 6:16manageable size. I do agree with.
- 6:19So that's kind of like reaching middle age.
- 6:22Well, that's funny. So middle age is not just about
- 6:24creaky knees and reading. Creaky knees and reading.
- 6:27Classes. That's right.
- 6:29It's about finally knowing a few things every guy should have
- 6:31figured out by now. So here is a list of a few
- 6:34essential skills. Cool, let's go.
- 6:36All right #1 negotiation. Or more like the art of
- 6:39negotiation. OK, right.
- 6:40So the art of negotiation isn't about winning every battle.
- 6:44It's about finding common ground, reading the room, and
- 6:46walking away with respect still intact.
- 6:49OK. So that's like an appropriate
- 6:51definition, right? But do you really leave the room
- 6:56intact? Oh God no.
- 6:57No, God no. We're in the middle of at work,
- 6:59We're expanding our, our, our space and we're in the middle of
- 7:02a lease and negotiation. And it's, it's just that whole
- 7:05process is awkward. Like when you buy a house or buy
- 7:07a car. Yeah, that whole process, I
- 7:09just, I hate it. It drives me.
- 7:12I'm so nervous all the time. Yeah, crazy.
- 7:14I I don't know. I don't negotiate.
- 7:16Well, right. My wife though, yeah, she's
- 7:19amazing at negotiation. Right.
- 7:21I think women in general are better at that than we are, are
- 7:23they? I, I think, I truly believe
- 7:24that. I think.
- 7:25Well, I know in my case it is. Yeah, yeah, in my case, my wife
- 7:27used to be a realtor and she's really good at negotiating.
- 7:30Right, And it's really just about, Hey, say your, your Peace
- 7:33of Mind and say what you need, right, and then see where you go
- 7:36from there, right, right. And that's my problem with being
- 7:38in Minnesotan, Minnesota. Nice.
- 7:40I was like, I never want to say what I want.
- 7:42No, you're just very quiet and and fine.
- 7:45I'm fine. So the wrong answer, you know,
- 7:50honestly, I'll even say I'm fine when I truly I'm fine.
- 7:52Like I have no opinion. I'll say, yeah, that's good, I'm
- 7:54fine. Yeah, but it's not taken that.
- 7:56Way no, it's still the wrong answer.
- 7:58And truly, you're fine. Truly am, truly am.
- 8:00I have no issues but. It's OK #2 basic home repair.
- 8:04Oh yes, absolutely. Every man should know the basic
- 8:07home. Home repairs, how to stop a
- 8:09leak, patch a wall, fix a squeaky door.
- 8:12Because calling a handyman for every little thing isn't always
- 8:15an option. That is so true.
- 8:16That is so true. And for me, I just learned trial
- 8:19by fire. I mean, I started early and then
- 8:22had had a couple different houses early through my career.
- 8:24I had to move a bunch of time. So I was always in new houses
- 8:27and had to figure things out because I'm in a new city.
- 8:30Don't know. A lot of people just got to
- 8:31figure it out. So I just I kind of had to,
- 8:33right and kind of same thing with my business.
- 8:35When I started my business, it was just me working out of my
- 8:37house in a truck. And, well, then you were fixing
- 8:39trucks and you were doing everything.
- 8:40Fixing everything, fixing the equipment, fixing the machines.
- 8:42I didn't have anybody to turn to.
- 8:44I had to learn how to do it. Now, I'm not going to fix my
- 8:46truck. Yeah, and I don't know anything
- 8:48about vehicles, and I really don't have a desire to learn it
- 8:52right. And I got a great mechanic and I
- 8:53trust them, so it gets my work. I think cars nowadays are a
- 8:56little different though. It's basically a computer on
- 8:59wheels, right? So it's harder to do things than
- 9:02my dad's, you know, 68 olds. It just, yeah, I can change oil,
- 9:05I can change spark plugs. It's easy, right?
- 9:07But now, now it's like you've got to do 35 different things to
- 9:10do that. Well, it comes to the home
- 9:12repair though. I mean, yeah, if you knock a
- 9:14hole in the wall you can patch that no problem.
- 9:16Looks like it's never happened. I've taught myself how to be an
- 9:19electrician, how to be a plumber.
- 9:21So understanding the basics of electricity, understanding the
- 9:24basics of plumbing, that's the stuff you just need to know
- 9:26because you can do a lot of those things yourself.
- 9:28And a lot of this was before YouTube was a thing.
- 9:30Now you can YouTube everything. Oh yeah, for sure.
- 9:33And I went all this before YouTube, just had to kind of
- 9:35figure it out as you go. Yeah, and putting like IKEA
- 9:38furniture together. You can't read the actual
- 9:40directions, so you got to go find YouTube to show you how to
- 9:43do it. OK, I'm kidding.
- 9:47I. Think those are a little bit
- 9:48easier directions. There's little pictures.
- 9:49Little pictures, but they're so specific.
- 9:51Are they are all right #3 finance management?
- 9:55Yes. So everyone should know the
- 9:57basic financial management, how to budget, save and invest,
- 10:01because a strong foundation with money makes life challenges a
- 10:04lot easier to handle. OK, so do you know where your
- 10:07money is going beside Amazon? And I do, but I think a lot of
- 10:12people don't. That's that.
- 10:13Especially with my kids, you know, I watch how they spend
- 10:16their money and where they buy things and everything just goes
- 10:19on a card. Yeah, Yeah.
- 10:21And I think you brought this up in a couple of podcasts ago,
- 10:23Girl Math. Girl math.
- 10:25If you got cash in your pocket, it's basically free.
- 10:27Right, right. And I think that's true.
- 10:30Like it's very common nowadays, right?
- 10:32That's just kind of how it is. And that's probably why we're
- 10:34more in debt now than we ever have been as a country.
- 10:37What's weird though, and because my finance management has really
- 10:41come a long ways, until I got on a really true budget, I was
- 10:46terrible at finances and now stick to my budget and things
- 10:50are moving along really well. Right, right.
- 10:52How are you like when you just I honestly just shopping like
- 10:57grocery shopping, but like, like we just recently bought a new
- 10:59washer and dryer. Yeah.
- 11:00Are you just OK, I need one, go buy one.
- 11:02Or are you like, research the heck out of it?
- 11:04You know me, Rob. OK, but our audience doesn't.
- 11:06I would research the heck out of it, My wife and I both would
- 11:09research the heck out of it and then make the decision and go
- 11:13purchase after that. Right.
- 11:14Yeah, I I do a fair amount of research.
- 11:17I don't think I'm quite as detailed as you, but here's 1
- 11:20trick I did find. What's that?
- 11:21So we just had to buy a new washer and dryer because I was
- 11:23crapped out. I found the same pair at all the
- 11:25places. They're all it's all the same
- 11:27price. But here's what my digging found
- 11:30me is everybody has a different thing in there.
- 11:32They're going to throw in free delivery or free installation
- 11:35and blah, blah, blah. I want to buy my first appliance
- 11:37ever at Costco. Yeah, we go there if we shop
- 11:39there all the time, we see their appliances.
- 11:40I've never even thought about it, but I'm like, mom's going to
- 11:42check there. Here's what's funny with them.
- 11:44They cover everything. They cover the install, the
- 11:46tall, the way, the, the delivery.
- 11:48They they cover everything. Where every other place you go
- 11:50to there, they nickel and dime, you know.
- 11:52Oh. I didn't know that Costco did
- 11:53all that. Yeah, and it's all covered.
- 11:55It's all. Free or I guess I would never
- 11:56thought. Of it, I never did either.
- 11:58So to go to Costco, yeah. So here's our tip for our future
- 12:01listeners. Check out Costco before you buy
- 12:02an appliance. And second tip, get get a budget
- 12:06early on in life and work towards things because you know,
- 12:11I learned late in life to have a budget and really handle your
- 12:14money wisely. And I'm trying to teach that to
- 12:16my kids now, is to build your budget.
- 12:18You know what you're working with and then know what you can
- 12:21spend. Absolutely, Yeah, savings early,
- 12:23saving early is key. If I so I started my business
- 12:27using part of my Target 401 Ki got a 401K right away when I
- 12:30started working with Target, right And I left Target, that's
- 12:32what I used to help fund my business to start it up.
- 12:34If I hadn't done that since when I started at 18, I never could
- 12:38have financed my business to start it out of the gate, right.
- 12:41The earlier you can start with things, it just it, it's such a
- 12:44huge win. Yeah.
- 12:45And I guess, you know, if you think about it, if you're in
- 12:47your early 20s and you just do a $100 a month into an account, by
- 12:53the time you retire, you're a millionaire.
- 12:54Yeah, even like a high yield savings or just something basic,
- 12:56right? It's huge.
- 12:57Yeah. So sock away the money, people.
- 12:59Do it all right, all right #4 emotional intelligence.
- 13:03What I don't know that I have that right.
- 13:05Emotional intelligence for men means knowing when to talk, when
- 13:10to shut up sometimes, and when to just hand over the remote.
- 13:16That's, that's very true. It'll save the arguments.
- 13:19It will. It'll save friendships and maybe
- 13:21even your marriage, right? But seriously, knowing how to
- 13:25listen, managing your temper. Temper and understanding what
- 13:29others are really feeling. Because strength isn't just
- 13:32physical, it's how you handle yourself and the people around
- 13:35you. Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 13:36I totally agree with that. I like that statement.
- 13:38That's really good, yeah. I do too, and that's only as
- 13:40I've gotten older. I think I my people may disagree
- 13:43with me. I think I've gotten better at it
- 13:45though, just being more compassionate and listening a
- 13:48lot more. I know that when I wasn't
- 13:50younger in my 20s and 30s, like I, it was my way or the highway
- 13:53and I was very stubborn and this is just the way it is and that's
- 13:55how I feel. No, you weren't stubborn.
- 13:58I'm still stubborn but I think I'm a lot more open than I have
- 14:03been and I'm I'm learning as I is it get older.
- 14:06You learn all the time. Absolutely, constantly have to
- 14:08keep learning. OK #5 critical thinking is
- 14:12knowing how to separate facts from nonsense, because by this
- 14:14age you've heard enough nonsense to fill the garbage.
- 14:19I, I think maybe I do some critical thinking, but I do, you
- 14:23know, a lot of nonsense comes out of me.
- 14:25And it's critical thinking is hard doing your like it says
- 14:28about doing your research, separating the facts from
- 14:30nonsense that's so hard to find now.
- 14:32Well, right. Because everything you, you
- 14:33don't know what is true when that you know.
- 14:36And so I choose to believe everything.
- 14:38Right. It's all.
- 14:40It's all the Internet, Brian, It's true.
- 14:42It's all true if it's on the Internet.
- 14:44Right, Yeah, it's very hard to discern now and it's it's, it's
- 14:48hard to do your research. So you really have to take
- 14:51everything in and then make it informed, educated decision
- 14:54that. Works well, I think that's why
- 14:56we do so much research because there's so much information.
- 14:59Yeah, you know, and you don't know what to believe.
- 15:01You can if you read reviews of a product, but there's so many
- 15:04good and bad, so you have to just let's make a judgement
- 15:07call. Yeah.
- 15:07So I don't know. It's hard to do it.
- 15:09Yeah. There's no bots on Amazon
- 15:11reviews whatsoever of. Course not Stop.
- 15:13Ruining my pitching. Time management by middle-aged
- 15:21Mastering time management means knowing how to prioritize what
- 15:24really matters. Saying no without guilt.
- 15:27That's my an issue. And realizing that not
- 15:31everything needs to be done today.
- 15:33Right, let's start with the same no without guilt part.
- 15:36Well, come on, I'm a Minnesotan. I know, right?
- 15:40That's not possible. You say no when it comes with
- 15:42guilt. That's what we do.
- 15:43It absolutely it does, right? Yeah.
- 15:46Not everything needs to be done today.
- 15:47It's good to prioritize what has to happen and what doesn't, and
- 15:49things you can put off and things you can't.
- 15:50That's why we work on the list. Yeah.
- 15:52Yeah. I always have a list going on
- 15:53things that have to be done right.
- 15:54And then there's still that the issue of I really don't want to
- 15:57do that. Yeah.
- 15:58So it's on the list, but I'm just sort of ignoring it.
- 16:00Right. Sorry, honey.
- 16:01Yeah, but I'm sort of ignoring those things on the list.
- 16:03I just don't really want to do them right.
- 16:05That's loud. I know.
- 16:06Yeah, exactly. OK, so it's that time again.
- 16:09What time is it? Time for our spring green
- 16:11minute. Yes, it is.
- 16:14And it's fall time. So this time we're going to talk
- 16:16a little bit about lawn rust. What do you know what that?
- 16:20Is no. I don't know what lawn rust is.
- 16:21Have you noticed your lawn turning a little bit orange?
- 16:24Well, yeah. Brown and crispy orangish, Yeah.
- 16:27And when rust after you mow and on your do you see it on your on
- 16:30your shoes and on your mower? On on the tires on your mower.
- 16:33I'm sorry, but I don't. OK, so you might.
- 16:35You don't always, but you might. But if you do, it might be lawn
- 16:38rust. So what it is, is it's a common
- 16:41fungal disease that can make your lawn look tired, thin and
- 16:44patchy. It often shows up during the
- 16:46late summer, early fall when grass growth slows due to stress
- 16:49from drought, heat, humidity, or excessive rain.
- 16:52So it can be either drought or too much rain.
- 16:54Oh, interesting. Yeah, 'cause it's a fungal
- 16:56disease. So here's how you can help your
- 16:58lawn recover and prevent lawn rest.
- 17:00You want to water a lot, you want to water deeply, and you
- 17:03want to water early. OK, so give your lawn a good
- 17:05soak in the early morning to promote healthy root growth and
- 17:09reduce overnight humidity. So early is the key on this one.
- 17:12So if you always get home from work and turn your sprinkler on,
- 17:15what happens is that water stays on your turf all night and the
- 17:18lawn stays wet all night. Never dries out, and that's when
- 17:22you get that. Term disease.
- 17:23That's not good. That's.
- 17:24Not good. So you want to do it in the
- 17:25morning? It's always, always water in the
- 17:26morning. Yes.
- 17:27I mean, in a pinch, once in a while it's fine, but yeah, I
- 17:29definitely want to do it in the morning.
- 17:31You're 1 inch of water that you told me I have one. 11 inch a
- 17:33week. Includes on my lawn including
- 17:35rainfall. OK all.
- 17:36Right. You want to mow on a regular
- 17:38basis, so keep your mower blades sharp to avoid cutting your
- 17:41grass too short. And we recommend 3 to 4 inches
- 17:43in height during the summer. So do you know how to measure
- 17:46that without getting out a ruler?
- 17:47Super easy. No.
- 17:49So go in your garage and bring your mower in there and then
- 17:52take a pop can or in my case a beer can.
- 17:54Turn it on, turn it on its side, and you should be able to barely
- 17:57slide that can under the mower that's at 3 inch height.
- 18:01That is really. Yeah, that's a fun little way.
- 18:03I didn't know that. So when you're getting ready to
- 18:05mow, pound that beer because you need to turn it on its side to
- 18:07measure the height of your mower.
- 18:09Got it? Every time you mow.
- 18:11Every. Time.
- 18:12No, I just look at the inches that are marked on my.
- 18:16Well, those aren't inches. OK.
- 18:17The the numbers marked on my wheel levers, yes.
- 18:20And I just adjust them up and down.
- 18:22Yes, those are just random numbers.
- 18:23So yeah, those aren't inches. OK, so I don't, I would never
- 18:27say they're inches. They're just random numbers that
- 18:30I mark right? So I just choose one randomly
- 18:34and here's what I'm going to mow at.
- 18:35So when you mow this week, just pound a beer and then sideways
- 18:38got it all right, fertilizing properly.
- 18:41Lawn rust thrives in nutrient poor soil.
- 18:43Supplying the right for the fertilizer helps your grass grow
- 18:46stronger and resist disease. So fertilizer, the nitrogen in
- 18:48that fertilizer actually really, really helps with the turf
- 18:51disease, so. OK, maybe that's why I don't
- 18:53have it in my my lawn right now, because you fertilize my lawn.
- 18:56We have a. Fantastic lawn service at.
- 18:57Fertilizer. I do have a fantastic lawn
- 18:59service named Who Spring Green. You want to reduce your thatch
- 19:04as well so thatch build up, holds moisture and creates the
- 19:06perfect environment for fungus. So this one is a little
- 19:08misleading because some thatch is good and people think thatch
- 19:11in the yard and I got to get rid of it.
- 19:12I got to rake it up, I got to power rake it.
- 19:14It's got to go away. Not the case.
- 19:16Some thatch is good, you just don't want it so thick where it
- 19:20starts to smother the grass. That's the problem.
- 19:22OK, so that's why you want to cut on.
- 19:24Cut it on a regular basis. You want to mulch it when you
- 19:26can, but if it's too long, beg it.
- 19:28OK, OK and got it and I will follow every direction.
- 19:32And we've got one more for you. Oh, shoot.
- 19:33And the last one is liquid aeration, a great follow up
- 19:36treatment after fungal diseases like rust.
- 19:38It loosens compacted soil, improves root development, and
- 19:41boosts. Recovery.
- 19:42You're all about that liquid area.
- 19:43I am because it is phenomenal. I got to get that done the.
- 19:47Results are amazing. So cool.
- 19:48There you go, That's our spring green minute.
- 19:51Now back to life skills, middle age style.
- 19:53Here we go #7 networking. Networking of this age isn't
- 19:58swapping business cards at a bar really.
- 20:00It's not. I have a business card, lots of
- 20:04them. They.
- 20:04Don't go anywhere. It's it's knowing who to call.
- 20:07Would you need a job lead, a good mechanic, or a discount on
- 20:10a lawnmower? Building real connections, not
- 20:12just contacts, is key to building a great network.
- 20:15I just call you Rob. I know.
- 20:18And you're my guy. Well you know call just me but
- 20:20you have other people you call like if you need your give
- 20:22mechanic for your car. I've got a mechanic, right?
- 20:25Yep, I have a small engine repair guy.
- 20:27I've got everybody. We have a Jeff Hoxie who knows
- 20:30about home building we. Have home builders?
- 20:32Yep, we have dumpsters. Got them all, yeah.
- 20:36Got them all. Actually, I had to.
- 20:37I had to send a text to Jeff this weekend because we had the
- 20:40city came out and did some stuff to our house and I had to patch
- 20:43in some holes in our new siding. So I had Jeff.
- 20:45What kind of caulking do I need? And he immediately.
- 20:48Told me and he told me. What a guy.
- 20:50Not about what you know, it's about who you know.
- 20:51OK. Is that that's the networking
- 20:53we're talking about? Absolutely.
- 20:54It's who you know. Who you know?
- 20:56Yep. And and keep up those
- 20:57relationships because you never know when you you could have
- 21:01some help. Absolutely.
- 21:02So coffee on a regular basis helps.
- 21:04Coffee. Hey you guys, everybody come and
- 21:05join us for coffee. Right, just show up just.
- 21:09Show up #8 self-defense as As we enter our middle age years,
- 21:15there's a unique perspective that emerges regarding
- 21:18self-defense. It's not about becoming a
- 21:20martial arts master. Isn't it?
- 21:22Really no, but more about having the awareness and skills to
- 21:26navigate potentially dangerous situations.
- 21:31That's why knowing some basic self-defense moves is important.
- 21:34Yeah, yeah, for sure, for sure. I luckily, I'm hope I'm not
- 21:38going to curse myself by saying this.
- 21:39I haven't had to use any self-defense in quite a long
- 21:42time. Yeah, not to.
- 21:43I don't really enjoy that situation.
- 21:46No try to run from it, right? I don't want to get a black.
- 21:49Guy, no, not so much. Pain hurts.
- 21:52I've had a lot of pain in my life.
- 21:54Speaking of pain, once you do get pounded, first aid in CPR,
- 21:58Yeah, Yeah. So understanding basic first aid
- 22:00in CPR becomes increasingly important at our age.
- 22:03It's not about being a medical professional, but having the
- 22:06skills to act quickly and potentially save a life in a
- 22:08critical situation. Everyone should consider getting
- 22:11some training. Yeah, that would be really good.
- 22:13I can just do CPR. Yeah, So I, I don't think I know
- 22:16anybody who doesn't know basic CPR.
- 22:18Like they almost teach that at every job I've ever been at.
- 22:21Yeah, well, not every job. I said not.
- 22:23I said almost every job. Yeah, clarify.
- 22:26I take that back. I think every job I bet at I've
- 22:28had to take ACPR course. I'm thinking yes, yes and yes.
- 22:32Every job I've been at, I've had to take a good.
- 22:33Course I've not had to take an every job, but I was at a job
- 22:39part of the emergency emergency response team.
- 22:42OK. So we had to go through lots of
- 22:44classes, lots of courses. And then you were basically on
- 22:47call to be the EMT or person that would come to their aid for
- 22:52the company. OK.
- 22:54And it was a two year deal. Wow.
- 22:56So for two years I was nervous. I would, I mean, do you do you
- 23:01feel that you were trained well enough to do basic first aid?
- 23:04I. Think I was because you learn
- 23:06about, you know, stroke victims, you learned CPR, you learned all
- 23:09these things, how to, you know, bandage and all that sort of
- 23:12thing. Sure.
- 23:13So next time we take a, a, you know, plane ride somewhere and
- 23:17they say, is there a doctor on the plane you can set up and
- 23:19say, I'm not a doctor, but I have been trained an emergency
- 23:22response. But I played a doctor on TV.
- 23:24Right. No, but I did learn how to to do
- 23:28CPR and how you, you know, you don't push the back of the neck
- 23:31up anymore. You actually lift this, the
- 23:33bottom of the the chin, you know, the jawline, you lift it
- 23:37up. Yeah.
- 23:37So it's all interesting to me. And and I always think it could
- 23:40I save somebody? I hope I could, but I've never
- 23:43been in this situation. Yeah, and you don't do the
- 23:45breathing anymore, did you know that?
- 23:46Right, because it's supposed to damage your lungs.
- 23:49And COVID had pretty put a kibosh on it too.
- 23:51Right. Well my brother-in-law used to
- 23:53be a cop and he gave me a mask. You used to put over someone's
- 23:57face so you don't actually write them.
- 23:58Yeah. Well, an upcoming episode.
- 24:00We're going to talk with Nurse Nikki.
- 24:02We are. We are.
- 24:02We're going to have a full episode about her and she's
- 24:04going to tell us all of our fun ER stories because she's an ER
- 24:06nurse. Oh, that'll be crazy.
- 24:08And she'll fill us in with some basic first aid and stuff and
- 24:10whatever we want for one from her, I think.
- 24:11But yeah, she'll go. She has some great, ER stories.
- 24:13So OK, yeah, that's another podcast.
- 24:15All right, next one, Basic Coding and Technology.
- 24:18Did you actually write this? Basic coding.
- 24:20Basic coding. Oh good Lord this comes all
- 24:23comes from a website I didn't write it and of.
- 24:26Course it's true, it's on, it's on the Internet of.
- 24:28Course. Basic coding I'm here's the only
- 24:30coding I have is. My read the definition, working
- 24:32on it. The only coding I have is like
- 24:35from Apple 2C and playing Oregon Trail.
- 24:37That's all I know. There's more to it.
- 24:39Alright, so everybody should have a basic understanding of
- 24:41coding and technology, enough to navigate this digital world,
- 24:45troubleshoot simple problems and stay relevant in this
- 24:48increasingly tech driven world. OK.
- 24:50So that's the key, OK. That's technology, yeah.
- 24:53Simple problems. OK, that's not coding.
- 24:55Come on, if you're trying to fix something on your phone that's
- 24:57basic coding, It's it's, I'm not asking you to create a website,
- 25:03which by the way, I can do. Yeah.
- 25:04And I know some basic coding. So when I wrote that I'm like,
- 25:07oh, I know basic coding OK. We're happy for you.
- 25:10Yeah, I do not. I mean, basic coding for me is
- 25:15like, just turn the damn thing off and start it over.
- 25:17It's a computer. Your first number one thing,
- 25:20turn off the computer and. Turn it on exactly itself fixes
- 25:22both problems, right? How about basic car maintenance?
- 25:25Yes. Yeah, not for me.
- 25:27Basic car maintenance isn't about turning into a mechanic.
- 25:30OK, that's good. Cause not it's about knowing
- 25:33enough to keep the ride running, your wallet happy, and your ego
- 25:37intact when the check engine light comes on.
- 25:40That the truth. Don't freak out like I used to
- 25:42do. Things like changing the oil,
- 25:44checking the fluids, or swapping a flat tire so you're not
- 25:47stranded waiting for help every time something goes wrong,
- 25:50right? That's why I have AAA.
- 25:52Exactly, that's why I tell everybody get AAA 'cause you
- 25:55don't have to, you know, change your flat tire.
- 25:58You don't have to do any of that stuff.
- 26:00You can call it tow. Yeah.
- 26:02The problem comes when you're in the middle of a snowstorm and
- 26:05like you go into a ditch or something.
- 26:06Then you're literally waiting for like hours.
- 26:08You're waiting a long time because they're busy.
- 26:10And that's a little different though, But I think like a flat
- 26:12tire, everybody should know how to change a flat tire.
- 26:15Yes, and I could if I needed to, but I'm not going.
- 26:18I'll check my oil. I'm not changing my.
- 26:21Oil, No, I'm not changing it. Yeah, and I do check the fluids.
- 26:24I do top off the washer fluid. I can do that.
- 26:27I do change the wiper blades. I can change the wiper blades.
- 26:30I have a diesel truck that requires a fuel filter to be
- 26:34changed on a regular basis. I've only had to do it once and
- 26:36I didn't do it. I had the dealership do it the
- 26:38first time. But I've looked in the manual
- 26:40and it looks fairly easy because they charged me like 80 bucks
- 26:44for the part and then 80 bucks to do it.
- 26:46Yeah, I bought the filter on Amazon for like $10.
- 26:49And you did it yourself. Well no, I'm going to the next
- 26:51time because at pay 160 for them to do it or I can do it for
- 26:53myself for 10 bucks cha. Ching.
- 26:55Yeah, and it looks fairly simple, so we're gonna and see
- 26:57how that. Works.
- 26:57Where's the sound effect of the dollar sign?
- 26:59It's on a different screen that I don't have access to right
- 27:02now, so here you go. There you go.
- 27:08That's us actually as mechanics. All right, right, next one, how
- 27:11to cook. Okay, now why am I reading this
- 27:12one? Because you need to learn to
- 27:15cook. For those that don't know, Brian
- 27:18is an excellent chef and I had spaghettios for dinner so.
- 27:21I did not. That's my role.
- 27:23All right, learning basic cooking skills empowers you to
- 27:25lead a healthier, more financially secure and more
- 27:28confident life. Empowers you.
- 27:30I will agree with that. It's about taking initiative and
- 27:33experiencing the profound satisfaction of nourishing
- 27:35yourself and those you care about with your own hands.
- 27:38You don't need to be a gourmet chef.
- 27:40Just start with simple recipes to build your confidence in the
- 27:42kitchen, all right? OK, we got to get you a simple
- 27:44recipe. Here's the deal.
- 27:45OK, you're. A great griller, OK.
- 27:48Yes, thank you. But here thing I I can cook all
- 27:51right. I I've cooked asked my wife.
- 27:53I've made some wonderful dinners.
- 27:55If you give me a recipe and you I have all the ingredients
- 27:58handy. I can follow directions.
- 28:01I can make dinner good for you. I have 0 desire to do it.
- 28:06I just that's. The difference?
- 28:07I have a lot of desire to cook. Yeah, I just.
- 28:09It's just not my thing, man. Just not my.
- 28:12Thing I like cooking. And you're very good at it, I.
- 28:14Think I should have been a chef. I think so too.
- 28:17OK, we're at #13 leadership skills.
- 28:20I don't know about that. Developing leadership skills in
- 28:23mid midlife extends beyond career progression.
- 28:28That's hard for me to say. It's about strategically
- 28:31navigating complex environments, leaving a positive legacy
- 28:35through mentorship, and fostering continuous personal
- 28:37growth and well-being. That sounds.
- 28:41Good. Sounds great, right?
- 28:42By embracing these aspects, middle-aged men can become
- 28:44impactful leaders who inspire and empower those around them,
- 28:48shaping a brighter future for themselves, their families, and
- 28:52their organizations. OK, you didn't edit this for.
- 28:54You put this in here because. This sounds great, I'm going to
- 28:56use it in my next write up. I, I, I, I'm, I'm more focusing
- 28:59on the middle-aged men part, so. Middle-aged.
- 29:01People, there you go. So I overlooked.
- 29:06That that's OK. That's OK.
- 29:08I, I agree. I agree.
- 29:09I think that leadership is a learned skill.
- 29:13It is. I think there's, there's some
- 29:15people that are put in leadership positions that really
- 29:17have no idea what they're doing. They may be really good worker
- 29:19bees and think, oh, they'll be a great leader.
- 29:21And once you pop them in, like no.
- 29:23Well, they didn't get the. Training.
- 29:24They get the training, or they don't have the desire, or they
- 29:26just honestly don't know or don't care.
- 29:28They just want to do a really good job, right?
- 29:30And they like the extra paycheck.
- 29:31I I really like mentoring. I do too in my career, my chosen
- 29:34career path being graphic design.
- 29:36Mentoring a junior designer. Here is one of my top things I
- 29:39love I love to do. Yeah, that's cool.
- 29:41That's cool. All right, next one,
- 29:42organizational skills. So every person should master
- 29:47basic organizational skills, keeping their space, schedule
- 29:50and priorities in order, because a little structure saves time,
- 29:53stress and headaches. Yeah, I should be more
- 29:56organized. Yeah, I I think that's actually
- 29:58one of the things I excel at. I'm I'm a little OCD if you are
- 30:02very if you haven't noticed, yeah, I have.
- 30:04Yeah, I talk about it all the time.
- 30:07I know. So some some call the strength,
- 30:09some call the fault, but I'm I'm going to go strength.
- 30:11It's a strength. Yeah, yeah, I I'm kind of a
- 30:13messy person, but I know where all my stuff is.
- 30:16Yeah, I don't get that. The same thing in our in our
- 30:18shop, our mechanic is extremely messy, but he could go.
- 30:21If I ask her something, he'll go right to it, right where I'll
- 30:23sit there and look for 30 minutes.
- 30:24I'm like, I have no idea what this is and he'll walk right to
- 30:25it. So my problem is with being
- 30:27organized is if I put something away, I can no longer see it.
- 30:31If I can't see it, I don't know I have it, I don't remember I
- 30:34have it. So tell this to my wife all the
- 30:36time. I've got to be able to see what
- 30:38I need, Sure. And it's right there.
- 30:40Or in my case, I just know where I put it because it's all it's
- 30:42it's organized home so I can go right to.
- 30:45It OK where on this list was memory?
- 30:47I don't think I can remember where I put it.
- 30:50We're. Not done yet.
- 30:52OK #15 Master the art of being confident.
- 30:56Confidence at this age isn't about impressing anyone, it's
- 30:59about walking into a room knowing you've got your stuff
- 31:02together and handling lifes ups and downs without second
- 31:06guessing yourself. Okay, I can do some of that,
- 31:08yeah, but no, I pretty much usually am not confident and
- 31:12that's based on my upbringing, self esteem issues, right,
- 31:15Right. But I think just doing this
- 31:17podcast, we're working on that. We are working on it.
- 31:19I do tend to talk a lot. You should hear how many times I
- 31:22mess up. You never mess up.
- 31:23I edit them out all the time. There's there's no proof.
- 31:29No, I think, I think you're more, I think you are more
- 31:31confident than you realize. And I think it's, it's your
- 31:35introspect isn't the same as my, I guess outrospect of you.
- 31:38Yeah. I think you.
- 31:40Got more confident than anything.
- 31:41You don't give yourself enough credit, I believe.
- 31:43I think Rob likes me. So those of you that don't know
- 31:46Brian is an exceptional artist, you should go check out his
- 31:49website at briandotancreative.com.
- 31:51Oh, thanks for the plug. And his paintings are amazing.
- 31:54We have three of them in our house.
- 31:55Yeah, you're probably my best customer.
- 31:57Yeah. And it's.
- 31:58Not not just because we know you and you're my very good buddy
- 32:00and and we love you. They are phenomenal.
- 32:03So yeah, check it out, people. They're great.
- 32:05Well, thank you. Right, All right.
- 32:06I got a couple more, just want to hit on really quick.
- 32:08We're not going to go into too much detail, but a couple more
- 32:10that I liked Have a firm handshake.
- 32:13I totally agree. Yeah, I think that's necessary
- 32:15in life for making a great first impression of everyone you meet.
- 32:18And I don't know if everybody knows this, but if you do a
- 32:20solid grip, if you both do a solid grip, like it doesn't
- 32:24hurt. Like people are afraid.
- 32:25They're very light and loosey goosey handed, right.
- 32:28If you both have a very solid handshake, it doesn't hurt at
- 32:30all. And that's confidence.
- 32:32And what I what I dislike about when you go in for a handshake,
- 32:35if you either get too early or too late and you miss the the
- 32:38grasp, yeah, then you're like, oh, limp fish, I missed it, man.
- 32:43I feel bad about. That I didn't go quick to the
- 32:45fifth form. I want to do it over.
- 32:46Let's do it overhead. Yeah, but that leads on to
- 32:49another one that always accepts an outstretched hand.
- 32:52Sure. Yeah, absolutely.
- 32:53Yeah, if anybody offers your hand, just just shake it.
- 32:56You can always go time. You can always go put Purell on
- 32:58it later. I do.
- 32:59That I know, right? I am not afraid of germs.
- 33:01No, not at. All.
- 33:02OK, here's another one. OK, look, people in the eye.
- 33:05Oh yes, looking people in the eye establishes a great
- 33:07connection with the person on the other end and it shows you
- 33:10you're serious, you're enthusiastic, etcetera,
- 33:13etcetera, etcetera. And you can look into their
- 33:15soul. So I always had a problem with
- 33:18looking in the eye because I that kind of goes along with the
- 33:21whole self esteem thing that I had growing up.
- 33:24And so it's hard you, you are burying your soul when you look
- 33:27in the eye and and you're talking to them.
- 33:28But it does make that connection.
- 33:30And I've learned that over time, do.
- 33:31You feel like a sense of awkwardness if you're like,
- 33:33stare too long. Is that kind of why?
- 33:35Yeah. That's why you always see me.
- 33:36What? We're sitting across from each
- 33:38other right now and you see me constantly pushing my eyes down.
- 33:42Oh, I see. I thought you're looking at your
- 33:43notes. Oh, I was.
- 33:46Well, that's what I was doing, right?
- 33:48All right, last one I got own a great stereo system.
- 33:52Yes, music is one of our biggest influences on our emotions that
- 33:54lists your spirits, motivates you and contributes to your
- 33:57overall mood. Yeah, I just streamed my music
- 34:00now, so. So here's my my little story.
- 34:03So back in the day, my buddy Tom, back in the 20s, he would,
- 34:07he always did the car stereos. Whatever car any of any of us
- 34:10got, he would install the new upgraded car stereo.
- 34:14That's cool. So I learned a lot from watching
- 34:16him. I learned how to do it and I
- 34:19also learned how to go get Taco Bell for him while he does it.
- 34:23But that was the thing. But what's funny is I I've never
- 34:26did one myself until a couple years ago.
- 34:27My daughter got a we got her a car at at 2012 Ford Focus.
- 34:31And then the stock stereo, which sucked, had no Bluetooth.
- 34:34It was horrible. I went online to Crutchfield and
- 34:36bought myself a new head unit and followed the instructions
- 34:39and plopped her in and I I learned all that from watching
- 34:41Tom. That's amazing you are a
- 34:43mechanic. Yeah, So that was fine.
- 34:45So all right. So I think that's kind of it for
- 34:47now to round it out. I mean, middle age, isn't it
- 34:49about slowing down? It's about knowing what actually
- 34:51matters and handling it without losing your mind.
- 34:54So by picking up the basics, fixing a leaky faucet, changing
- 34:57your own oil, Brian. Not going to happen.
- 35:00Not going to happen. Cooking a decent meal, Rob?
- 35:02Yep, keep your finances in check and even understanding what the
- 35:05heck your teenager is talking about.
- 35:07No idea. You've got the tools to survive
- 35:09and maybe even enjoy the chaos. And a little emotional
- 35:13intelligence, networking, and tech smarts and you'll not only
- 35:17handle life's curveballs, but do it with a bit of style, a sense
- 35:21of humor, and And enough know how to keep your friends and
- 35:25family wondering how do you got so good at the whole?
- 35:28Adulting. That's right, you are an expert.
- 35:30I try to be yes, I think that's it.
