Transcript
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Welcome to everyone the critics.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: The show where a guest picked a movie rated below forty percent on Rotten Tomatoes and tells us why critics got it wrong.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Yanis Cove, a formerly pretentious film school student.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Ten years later sees the error of his ways.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: My guest today is stand-up comedian, musician, and writer Marcia Belski.
- 0:23SPEAKER_03: Thank you for having me.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: How are you doing?
- 0:27SPEAKER_03: I'm doing okay, you know, I'm doing good, everything considered.
- 0:30SPEAKER_03: Like I'm I'm I'm good.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: What else have you been up to lately?
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: You've been up to anything?
- 0:38SPEAKER_03: I've just been well, like New York, it's mostly like outdoor only stuff.
- 0:44SPEAKER_03: And um so I've just been doing a lot of outdoor hangs, I've been doing a lot of writing, um, I've been doing a lot of personal growth, which is just disgusting, and I just so horrible, really, really not fun.
- 0:59SPEAKER_03: Um but yeah, so I've been I've been good.
- 1:02SPEAKER_03: It's been kind of intense, but it's been I think it's been good.
- 1:05SPEAKER_03: Because I think when we're in comedy, like, you know, I could just like be out doing shows for like instant validation like all the time.
- 1:12SPEAKER_03: So I think this is kind of forcing me like to think more in the long term.
- 1:17SPEAKER_03: And you know, it's horrible, but it's it's I think we'll be good in the long run.
- 1:24SPEAKER_03: What about you?
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: How's how's you so you're not in London, you're now in um I'm yeah, I mean Hertfordshire, which is like it's 20 minutes from London, so it's not far.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Oh it's like it's like j it's like the equivalent of Jersey to New York, like Jersey City to New York.
- 1:36SPEAKER_03: Wow, so they have different phases even though it's like only or tier whatever, even though it's only 20 minutes outside.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: It's it it makes no sense, and I'm sure we're gonna go into tier two very soon as well.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: I don't know why we haven't gone into it, to be honest, because we're already on like a I think we've gone to like a high level or a medium to like bordering on high level of it, so I don't know why we haven't gone into it.
- 2:01SPEAKER_03: That is it makes no sense.
- 2:03SPEAKER_03: In New York, actually, it's kind of actually by neighborhood the way that they're doing it, because there were these certain like cluster spots, and so then they were like, okay, like people in Williamsburg, like your businesses can't be open.
- 2:16SPEAKER_03: But it was kind of like weird because it's like, yeah, it's it seems really complicated.
- 2:21SPEAKER_03: But they have indoor dining again, but I don't think it's like London because it's like you it's only at twenty-five percent capacity.
- 2:29SPEAKER_03: But my friends who work in food service is just like, just don't.
- 2:32SPEAKER_03: Like, just don't, you don't need to eat indoors.
- 2:35SPEAKER_03: Like, if they would just provide some kind of a bailout, like then restaurants could give their employees unemployment.
- 2:40SPEAKER_03: It wouldn't be this like forced, you know.
- 2:43SPEAKER_03: I hate that.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Well, that's essentially what they did here.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: They tried to give like the 50% off if you go for a if you spend at least like£10 or something like that, and you sit but you have to sit down in the restaurant to eat.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: That was the way they did it.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: It was like it was like, well, why can't you just take the food away?
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Why do you need to sit down and eat inside the restaurant?
- 3:03SPEAKER_03: Wait, they provided direct incentive, like, for people to go out and eat.
- 3:07SPEAKER_03: That is psychotic.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: And it didn't work, obviously.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: That's why it's got so much worse again.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: That's why it picked up.
- 3:15SPEAKER_03: Jesus, like, that's really insane.
- 3:18SPEAKER_03: When I was in high school, so I went to um school for six months in London when I was in high school because my dad is a professor and he like taught abroad.
- 3:28SPEAKER_03: So I went with him and like we were we lived in like St.
- 3:30SPEAKER_03: John's Wood and stuff.
- 3:32SPEAKER_03: And um Oh nice.
- 3:33SPEAKER_03: It was yeah, it was really, really cool.
- 3:35SPEAKER_03: Like we lived like right around the corner from the Abbey Road studios and stuff, and like I felt like all these tourists would like um they didn't know like that a zebra crossing, like that you could just like go so and Abbey Road's a really busy road, so they would just wait for cars.
- 3:50SPEAKER_03: And then I was just like this stupid American girl, but I like I thought I was like so like integrated into the London life, and so I would just walk past them and be like, Yeah, I'm a real London girl, you stupid tourists, like yeah and feel like so dumb and cool about but it was crazy because we were there in winter and I didn't realize that England is like even more north than like the most northern point of America, like where like it's more north than Maine, the state Maine.
- 4:17SPEAKER_03: And um so in winter, like I swear to god, I would leave school at 3 30 p.m.
- 4:22SPEAKER_03: and it was dark.
- 4:23SPEAKER_03: And then in summer it would be like sun starting to set at like 10 30, and I was like, this is crazy, like but I kinda liked that in summer at least.
- 4:33SPEAKER_03: In winter it was bleak.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: In summer it's nice, and yeah, in winter it's very bleak.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: But yeah, yeah.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: So now we're going like now it's gonna be even more interesting.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: I think people are gonna quarantine less and less as well now because of it being dark so early, they're gonna like go out and enjoy it as much as they can.
- 4:50SPEAKER_03: It's just totally that's where I feel like the second like waves come from and stuff, because it's like it's starting to get cold.
- 4:59SPEAKER_03: So summer, it's like, yeah, let's hang out at the park all day and night.
- 5:02SPEAKER_03: Like, but now I feel like people are starting to turn to more indoor hangs.
- 5:06SPEAKER_03: But I it's just tough because I just get so anxious, like, unless we're literally both holding our rapids and like dating's like impossible.
- 5:13SPEAKER_03: Like it's just like I don't even like I'm just like you know what, I'm gonna just use this time to like get to know me.
- 5:21SPEAKER_03: Like, but again, personal growth is just like disgusting and I hate it, so just trying to find that balance, like you know, Tinder's a wasteland and everybody wants to talk about Oh yeah, I I deleted Tinder and just I deleted it like a hundred times and then it's like it's like I'll get back on and be like, nope, I'm depressed, I'm deleting it.
- 5:42SPEAKER_03: Like, you know, but it's kinda nice because it's like I feel like even when I would be like single, I would always just like get really like into like crushes and like stuff like that, and so right now I'm just kinda trying to just like actually just not be looking for anything, you know, just like yeah, but again it sucks.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:07SPEAKER_03: No.
- 6:09SPEAKER_03: But anyway, sorry, I feel like we talked about the movie, I guess.
- 6:12SPEAKER_03: I could just talk about COVID all day.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: So you you've come on you've come on to talk about uh the movie Greece 2.
- 6:19SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 6:19SPEAKER_03: Best movie ever written in the history of time, yes I have.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: So it came out in the the 80s, like I don't know how long after the original Greece.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: This is this is 82.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: What was the original Greece?
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: Do you rem do you know?
- 6:31SPEAKER_03: That's a good question.
- 6:32SPEAKER_03: I think I want to say original Greece was late 70s.
- 6:35SPEAKER_03: Let me try it.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's definitely 70s, so I don't know how like I'm trying to work out how long after they left it because it's I call it Greece 1.
- 6:43SPEAKER_03: Uh 1978.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: 78, okay, so it's four years later.
- 6:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they were real quick on that follow-up.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: And the it because the interesting thing is, it feels very rushed.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 6:57SPEAKER_03: See, I don't get that.
- 6:58SPEAKER_03: No, I don't I don't see it as rushed, and I see it as very, very thorough and calculated and just well put together.
- 7:05SPEAKER_03: Well put together.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: Well it has 36% on Rotten Tomatoes and uh for critics and 53% for for the audience score.
- 7:14SPEAKER_03: Um and I'm surprised the audience score isn't higher because it is kind of a cult classic.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: It's very much a cult classic.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: It's a huge cult classic.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: Um I'd never seen it before.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: Uh I watched it in segments because I got I don't know if you saw the other day I I wrote on Twitter that I'm watching one of the movies for this, and I don't want to spoil what it is, but it's maybe the worst movie I've ever seen in my life.
- 7:43SPEAKER_03: How dare you?
- 7:45SPEAKER_03: Uh first of all, although I don't know what I would feel about any of these movies if I had watched them for the first time as an adult, because like I we had a VHS of Greece 2 that I watched.
- 8:00SPEAKER_03: That and Newsies were like my favorite fucking movies.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: See, Newsies is great.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: Newsies are great though.
- 8:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, well, Christian Bale would like do anything in his power to destroy that movie from the archives, but he can't.
- 8:12SPEAKER_03: And now it's on Disney Plus.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: Oh, is it?
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: He can't avoid it.
- 8:18SPEAKER_03: He can't avoid it.
- 8:20SPEAKER_03: But I loved Grease 2 so so much, so much as a kid.
- 8:25SPEAKER_03: Like what were you watching it?
- 8:27SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: Oh no, go on, go on.
- 8:29SPEAKER_03: No, gas, please.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: I was gonna say, what what so do you do you remember the first time you saw it?
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: Uh like how old were you when you first saw it?
- 8:37SPEAKER_03: I mean probably like seven or eight, like young.
- 8:43SPEAKER_03: And I had definitely seen the first movie first, I think.
- 8:47SPEAKER_03: But I honestly That was gonna be the other question.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: Had you seen the other one first?
- 8:51SPEAKER_03: I honestly don't know at this point, but I definitely I liked Grease 2 more.
- 8:55SPEAKER_03: Like I watched Grease 2 like a million times, and I'd probably seen the original Grease like, you know, a few times.
- 9:01SPEAKER_03: Like, wasn't obsessed with it.
- 9:02SPEAKER_03: I was obsessed with Grease 2.
- 9:04SPEAKER_03: I knew every song.
- 9:05SPEAKER_03: Like looking back, I think I was horny for all of the characters of all genders.
- 9:10SPEAKER_03: Like I was like just like horny for Michelle Pfeiffer, horny for the British guy Michael.
- 9:16SPEAKER_03: Like I was just like, damn, like, you know.
- 9:20SPEAKER_03: But yeah, like, and the songs like were so like catchy, and it was just like the fun.
- 9:25SPEAKER_03: Like, it was just like ugh, it really it it's you know, objectively it's a bad film, but I think I'm realizing that I really like bad, especially musicals, like just like I love I mean they have a song called Let's Bowl Tonight, and it's just about them going bowling.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: Literally, literally just about them going bowling.
- 9:46SPEAKER_03: Literally, all they do is bowl.
- 9:47SPEAKER_03: There's no innuendo, it's just let's bowl tonight, and then all they do is bowl.
- 9:54SPEAKER_03: That is genius.
- 9:56SPEAKER_03: That is so that takes there's like it goes the full circle from bad to genius.
- 10:01SPEAKER_03: Like it just it goes, it's so bad that it's actually genius.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: Well, there's so many songs like that in this movie where they just they they all sound I to me, all of the songs sound kind of similar.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: I can't really like differentiate a lot of them.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: Whereas like the original Grease, I feel like has so many iconic songs in it.
- 10:21SPEAKER_03: Well, original Grease is based on a Broadway musical.
- 10:24SPEAKER_03: So it was like it is actually like whereas Grease 2, they probably paid some guy who makes commercial jingles to have like the worst month of his life, and to like they're like, Can you just write like eight songs for this like movie that's a sequel?
- 10:38SPEAKER_03: And I feel bad for the actors that they tricked to coming back because there's the principal, the only people they got back was the principal, Eugene, the nerd director.
- 10:48SPEAKER_03: Frenchie, which I feel like she was conned into it.
- 10:51SPEAKER_03: I don't understand how they were.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: Have you read about what happened with her in it?
- 10:54SPEAKER_03: What happened?
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: So she originally like they got her to come back into it, and she was ex she was happy to do it, and then in the middle of shooting, they were like, Oh, actually, we don't need you anymore.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: And so that's why she disappears halfway through the movie.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: Because they were like rewriting it as they were going, like they hadn't finished the script.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: They were just writing it as they were going.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: And so that's why she just straight up disappears.
- 11:18SPEAKER_03: They don't need her that because I assumed that she was like, listen, I'll come back and I'll shoot three scenes and that's it.
- 11:28SPEAKER_03: And they were like That's what you would think.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: That's what you would think.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: But no, like she was fine, she was happy to do it.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: She showed up and they and then they then it was like, oh no, we don't need you anymore.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: We have no purpose for you being in this.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: And it makes sense when you watch because like all she does is literally just like stand off to the side and watch Michael from afar.
- 11:48SPEAKER_03: She's like, Michael, you gotta talk to her.
- 11:52SPEAKER_03: That is so crazy.
- 11:54SPEAKER_03: So that means they were writing it as they were filming it.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: Which is why like other people turn this down as well.
- 12:01SPEAKER_03: Oh, I'm sure I couldn't even First of all, the guy who played um the main T-bird, I like forget the character name.
- 12:11SPEAKER_03: But Johnny, Johnny.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: Johnny, yeah.
- 12:14SPEAKER_03: Is fully 40 years old.
- 12:16unknown: Yeah.
- 12:17SPEAKER_03: Playing like a 17-year-old.
- 12:19SPEAKER_03: Like, they're all so old.
- 12:20SPEAKER_03: And then you have the guy who actually played Scooter McGavin in Happy Gilmore.
- 12:25SPEAKER_03: Who like that was.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: I knew I recognized him.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: I knew I recognized him from somewhere.
- 12:29SPEAKER_03: That's what was so funny to me when I was a kid because I saw Grease 2, and then when I saw Happy Gilmore, I was like, oh my god, it's the guy from Greece 2, and everybody's like, what?
- 12:38SPEAKER_03: Like, I'm like, yeah, Greece 2.
- 12:41SPEAKER_03: Like, I didn't realize until later that like nobody else had seen this movie but me.
- 12:45SPEAKER_03: Like, and then it would but it also that wasn't true.
- 12:47SPEAKER_03: It was just like no one I knew, and then I found out once the internet was invented that it's like a cult classic, and I was not the only one who loved it.
- 12:54SPEAKER_03: Thank you very much.
- 12:56SPEAKER_03: Oh reproduction.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: Do you have friends that like it?
- 13:00SPEAKER_03: You know, I think once I got to college, I did like meet some like musical theater people who were like, Of course I loved Grease 2.
- 13:06SPEAKER_03: Like it was kind of like, but I don't remember I never like watched it.
- 13:10SPEAKER_03: I think I watched it with friends when I was young, but then I just like secretly loved it.
- 13:15SPEAKER_03: And then like I think I was like new well enough to be embarrassed about it, and then finally was like, Did anyone else like this Greece 2 movie?
- 13:24SPEAKER_03: And like people are like, I mean it's bad.
- 13:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, no, it's bad, yeah.
- 13:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no one likes it, yeah.
- 13:30SPEAKER_03: No, it's bad.
- 13:31SPEAKER_03: But I fucking loved it.
- 13:33SPEAKER_03: And I remember I realized I've watched it so much that it's like even re-watching it for the first time since I was like, I don't even know the last time I watched it.
- 13:40SPEAKER_03: I must have been like 18 or something.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: Oh, it's been a while then.
- 13:43SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, like I mean, probably like I guess twelve years ago, but like, and then I still know every word to like every song.
- 13:50SPEAKER_03: Like, I still like or it's just like reproduction.
- 13:53SPEAKER_03: That song was the first song that ever made me horny.
- 13:55SPEAKER_03: Like, I was like a sex.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: How?
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: How did that song make you horny?
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: That is the Reproduction favorite song.
- 14:02SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 14:04SPEAKER_03: So good.
- 14:05SPEAKER_03: So good.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: It's somehow tame.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: It's somehow the most tame song about sex and the most disgusting song about sex at the same time.
- 14:14SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, the favorite.
- 14:15SPEAKER_03: I don't think you even know what a pistol is.
- 14:18SPEAKER_03: I got your pistol right here.
- 14:21SPEAKER_03: That's like, oh like I remembered, like it's not even that it made me horny, it was just like it made me be like, I don't get it a pistol.
- 14:28SPEAKER_03: Uh like it was like I was like, I would always be that kid who would be like trying to understand the adult humor, and then once I got it, just being like, they're talking about dicks, like uh, but this whole movie, like, wow, I mean like Michael's so cute, oh, so cute.
- 14:49SPEAKER_03: Michelle Pfeiffer is so hot, like it's like, come on.
- 14:53SPEAKER_03: But should we go through the plot for everyone with the colours?
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: Well, let's let's let's talk about the I'll give the synopsis first, which is basically that.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: So I originally thought before watching this, and when when the T birds come out and everything, I thought they were playing the same people.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: I thought he I thought he was supposed to be Danny.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: Uh Danny Kanicki.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I thought they were all supposed to be them and just like a bad version of them until he said until they said his name was Johnny, and I thought she was supposed to be.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: It's like rot role reversal almost.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: Uh they kind of flip the men and the women, I feel like.
- 15:37SPEAKER_03: That is, I think looking back, I think that's what I liked is that Michelle Pfeiffer's character is kind of the Danny Zuko character, and then Michael is Sandy.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 15:49SPEAKER_03: I like that.
- 15:50SPEAKER_03: And then he becomes oh, well, I won't spoil it.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: So basically the plot the the the basic plot is that she um this like British guy moves to uh joins the school for the first time, and there's obviously obviously like the T-Birds and the uh pink ladies, he wants to join the T-Birds and he kind of like has a cr he has a crush on Michelle Fiverr's character, uh Stephanie.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: And uh he's kind of like a little bit nerdy, he's although he's not really, he's just kind of like British, and they think he's nerdy.
- 16:25SPEAKER_03: It's fucking crazy because he's like the hottest, like well-dressed, like smart guy.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: He's so well dressed.
- 16:32SPEAKER_03: Loser.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: And all of them are just wearing like their leather jackets or like suspenders.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's this like Greaser culture where it's just like he's a prep, like and then like yeah, so that that that's the basic synopsis, it's like he's trying to win her over.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: Um it's kinda yeah, it's all it's not quite the same as Greece, the original Greece, where uh they knew each other or anything in the past, or yeah, yeah.
- 17:04SPEAKER_03: No, they cut out all the interesting backstory.
- 17:06SPEAKER_03: And it's like both Greases like teach the lesson of like if you just change yourself completely for what the other person wants you to be, you will find love.
- 17:17SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 17:17SPEAKER_03: And that's really true.
- 17:18SPEAKER_03: And that's really, really true.
- 17:21SPEAKER_03: You know, if that's what I could teach people, it's that like if you're having trouble, just completely change yourself to be what the other person wants to see, and then they will love you.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: So when you get back on Tinder, remember that.
- 17:35SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 17:36SPEAKER_03: I just have to change every match.
- 17:38SPEAKER_03: I'm just like, oh god.
- 17:40SPEAKER_03: I do think to do that.
- 17:41SPEAKER_03: I'll like people please, so that's the problem.
- 17:43SPEAKER_03: Is like as like the comedian and stuff, you know what I mean?
- 17:45SPEAKER_03: Where it's like, I'll like be like, okay, I think I can sense like what they want, and then it's just like, but that's also the personal growth I'm going through right now, which is again very annoying.
- 17:56SPEAKER_03: To just have to like be like, okay, I guess I'm gonna like uh figure out who I am or whatever.
- 18:01SPEAKER_03: Like sorrible, don't recommend it.
- 18:05SPEAKER_03: Myself, I'm just gonna be myself, I guess, like and put my own needs first.
- 18:10SPEAKER_03: Which, like, what is that?
- 18:11SPEAKER_03: I've never done that.
- 18:12SPEAKER_03: That's an interesting change, but yeah, so but anyways, back to Greece too.
- 18:17SPEAKER_03: Um instead of my psychological tangents, but yeah, like yeah, he changes himself completely to also they do a montage where he like learns how to not just ride a motorcycle, but like do full like tricks, like jump into like evil can evil.
- 18:33SPEAKER_03: Literally, like within like a month is like the timeline.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: I'm just gonna is that what the timeline is?
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: It looks like a day.
- 18:40SPEAKER_03: It's like a day and a half, yeah, or he's just riding on this broken motorcycle.
- 18:45SPEAKER_03: And they do the same thing that they do in the original Grease, where but instead of Grease Lightning, he they just like miraculously transform this like shitty bike into like this amazing motorcycle, but they don't really know how he did it or how he he reads a book on like mechanics.
- 19:01SPEAKER_03: He's just so smart.
- 19:03SPEAKER_03: Because that's it's like they're not even sticking to one type of intelligence.
- 19:07SPEAKER_03: They're like, he's good at Shakespeare, which means that if he tried hard enough, he could learn how to fix a bike.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: But if you can read Shakespeare, he can read a bike manual.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 19:18SPEAKER_03: It would have been funny if they showed him like driving down the left side of the street and then being like, oh fuck, like oh shit.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: See, that's why they need you on the rewrites.
- 19:30SPEAKER_03: Ugh, if you get me in there for Grease 3, I will make it the best thing anyone's ever seen.
- 19:36SPEAKER_03: But no, I love that it was like instead of yeah, the characters, they were just like, it's basically fanfiction.
- 19:41SPEAKER_03: Like they're just like, okay.
- 19:43SPEAKER_00: It really is a great thing.
- 19:45SPEAKER_03: I love I love whole movies that get whole movie budgets that are just literally a fanfiction.
- 19:52unknown: Yeah.
- 19:53SPEAKER_03: Where it's like, I mean, the biggest example of that is um what's it called?
- 19:58SPEAKER_03: Uh Fifty Shades of Grey was just Twilight fanfiction.
- 20:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 20:03SPEAKER_03: And they like changed the character names and stuff.
- 20:06SPEAKER_03: So if you're out there writing fanfic, it can happen for you.
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: What did you know that um so apparently high school musical uh was the script for uh Grease 3 and they changed it.
- 20:22SPEAKER_03: I love all these facts that you're giving me.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: Like this is just I I read IMDB.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: I read like I pulled up IMDb before.
- 20:30SPEAKER_03: Love it.
- 20:30SPEAKER_03: And see, I'm a purist, so I don't read IMDB for movies I love.
- 20:34SPEAKER_03: You know, I just I just like to guess, like, did they write it while they were filming it?
- 20:38SPEAKER_03: Like, was there gonna be a Grease series?
- 20:41SPEAKER_03: No, that's interesting.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: That was what they they'd planned to do.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: They'd planned to make like a series of movies of Greece, and because this one did so badly, they like scrapped it, but Grease 3 was what eventually became high school musical.
- 20:53SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 20:54SPEAKER_03: That like it really tracks kind of like it's so formulaic, like where you can just be like, boy or girl doesn't belong, like other boy or girl is cool but needs to learn that that's not what matters, like, you know, but it also is always what matters, where it's just like okay, because he learned how to ride a motorcycle, now he's like allowed to date her.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:16SPEAKER_03: Whereas when he was just an English nerd, she's like, we're just a little different, you and I.
- 21:22SPEAKER_03: We're not the same.
- 21:25SPEAKER_00: The thing one of the things about their like relationship though is like he immediately falls for her, knowing nothing about her.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: He just sees her at a distance.
- 21:34SPEAKER_03: Like And that is true love for straight men, it's a beautiful thing.
- 21:39SPEAKER_03: They're just like they're like, she's the exact woman that I've always wanted to have physically.
- 21:45SPEAKER_03: I can make anything about her personality work.
- 21:47SPEAKER_03: And then she's like so mean to him, and he's just like so mean.
- 21:52SPEAKER_03: But that is true.
- 21:53SPEAKER_03: Guys like when you're mean to them.
- 21:54SPEAKER_03: That is true, actually.
- 21:57SPEAKER_03: Not at all, obviously.
- 21:59SPEAKER_03: But I feel like There'll be like people who think I'm gonna be like way meaner than I am, and I'm like, sorry that I'm not like spitting in your face, like you know.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: Why do people think that with you?
- 22:09SPEAKER_03: Well, not so much like, but I think when I first because I like three or four years ago, like most of my comedy was just like really like aggressive, like um masandress, like feminist like stuff.
- 22:21SPEAKER_03: And I still like, you know, but it was like um yeah, but that's not how I am in my like personal relationship.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: So then it was like I just call it a character as well.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: Like you know you're playing a character on stage, you're not you're not the same person you are on stage as you are off stage.
- 22:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like I would like do stuff like with my friend, we'd do like a band and our music was like really aggressive, and so then I think that like but it's really like in my personal relationships, I'd rather be like the more like submissive one because it's just kind of like you know, I'm angry enough in my day-to-day life.
- 22:57SPEAKER_03: Like when I like get home, I wanna just be like chill, but then not always no.
- 23:03SPEAKER_03: I think people knew I was like nice and stuff, but there was just one guy I dated where I think he thought I was gonna be this very like domineering, like mean, like, and then I think he was kind of disappointed when I was like, I wanna let me cook for you.
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: Why are you so nice?
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: It doesn't I don't like this.
- 23:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they want you to like insult them and like tell them off, and I was just like, You're so cute.
- 23:26SPEAKER_03: Like but but yeah, and but in this it was like that I feel like that's why he really liked um what's her character name?
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: Stephanie.
- 23:36SPEAKER_03: Stephanie.
- 23:37SPEAKER_03: Like she's like so mean to him and then like only accepts him when he like changes to be what although I guess they try and do the thing where she's like kind of falling in love with Michael before she realizes that he's the motorcycle guy, and he's I mean very basically they do.
- 23:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like or he like he's like tutoring her and she's like chewing her gum line actually you're kinda cute, like and his song Charade, oh god, that's the worst song in this movie.
- 24:08SPEAKER_03: Listen, all the music's really that's the worst song as I've been.
- 24:12SPEAKER_03: It really is and how they must have just cast him because he was like a decent actor and he was cute and he was willing to do the part because he's not a singer.
- 24:21SPEAKER_00: Not at all.
- 24:24SPEAKER_03: Really, really bad song.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: Well apparently this like this ruined he said this ruined his career, like this movie.
- 24:31SPEAKER_03: Oh, I wondered why he wasn't in anything after this.
- 24:34SPEAKER_03: I was like so obsessed with him.
- 24:36SPEAKER_03: I was like, I can't wait to see his other movies, and then it was like there are none, like No.
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: They they said like apparently he was like being he was he was supposed to be like the next heartthrob, and then like this came out and it ruined him.
- 24:49SPEAKER_03: I don't feel like that would happen now.
- 24:50SPEAKER_03: I don't feel like one movie.
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: No, it wouldn't happen now.
- 24:55SPEAKER_03: That's poor guy.
- 24:56SPEAKER_03: He probably made like a thousand dollars to do the whole thing anyway.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's so sad, that's true as well.
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: But he was also in Empire Records, wasn't he?
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: He was that um uh right.
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: The uh like the guy that they're you know they're all obsessed with, like the the I can't remember the name.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:17SPEAKER_03: He's got kind of like a not like James Dean, I don't know, but he is like that's the thing he's not a believable nerd because he's like so cool the whole time in this movie.
- 25:29SPEAKER_03: Like we are just like, um, how would anybody not be into that guy?
- 25:33SPEAKER_03: Like he's just like suave, charming, sweet.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: He's probably like in his mid-sixties right now.
- 25:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 25:43SPEAKER_03: I just said I'm not trying to have crushes anymore.
- 25:45SPEAKER_03: I'm like, you know what?
- 25:46SPEAKER_03: Let me find the first crush I ever had and make sure that he marries me.
- 25:50SPEAKER_03: Like, I'm like, oh my god, you know that movie that ruins your life?
- 25:53SPEAKER_03: Well, I love you.
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna bring it up at every possibility.
- 25:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: Um so yeah, let's go through the movie then.
- 26:01SPEAKER_00: Like, so it opens with like a um a supposed new era at Rydale High, and it's supposed it's set in 1961 this time, so it's it's moved on from the 50s, it's like now the sixties.
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: Um, it's different.
- 26:14SPEAKER_00: You get the back to school song.
- 26:16SPEAKER_00: Um sung by the four tops, which I didn't realise until the end of the movie.
- 26:21SPEAKER_03: Really?
- 26:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:23SPEAKER_03: Interesting.
- 26:24SPEAKER_03: Because I saw it in the credits at the end.
- 26:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:27SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 26:28SPEAKER_03: You know, what I love about this movie, and what really makes a good musical, is when every song is just very literal, doesn't advance the plot in any way, and because you have back to school, you have let's bowl.
- 26:42SPEAKER_03: You know, these are these are the makings of a really just well thought out movie musical.
- 26:48SPEAKER_03: Because you go, what are they doing?
- 26:50SPEAKER_03: Why are they all there?
- 26:51SPEAKER_03: What is this?
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: They're back to school.
- 26:53SPEAKER_03: They're back to school, and now I see, and now I see why they're there, and that's what you want the music to do.
- 27:00SPEAKER_03: You want it to guide with no metaphor, just very literal.
- 27:05SPEAKER_03: Just we're back to school.
- 27:07SPEAKER_03: Boom.
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: They're back to school, and they're like it's catchy, but the dancing that goes along with it is not good.
- 27:14SPEAKER_03: I love that move, the like knee up like snap move.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: It's terrible dancing, and like their faces are ridiculous, and it goes on for way too long.
- 27:26SPEAKER_03: This is where I think the decision for me to not be a musical theater actor pays off every day because it's like in comedy, I can normally choose.
- 27:35SPEAKER_03: Of course, I've done tons of humiliating shows, but like it feels like I'm that's my choice.
- 27:40SPEAKER_03: Like, yeah, like actors have to take so many humiliating parts, and then it's like your onset, and they're like, Okay, can you like do this dance where you walk around like a chicken and you start like sure, yeah, of course.
- 27:56SPEAKER_03: And like Christian Bale's big break was newsie, and he's like so upset about it.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: Like he hasn't done one since.
- 28:05SPEAKER_03: Well, they asked him, no, he hates musicals, and they asked him, um, like when newsies went on Broadway, like he they were like, Are you gonna go to the premiere?
- 28:14SPEAKER_03: And he was just like, Do not bring it up.
- 28:16SPEAKER_03: Oh guys, no, he didn't even he didn't he didn't even go watch it.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: I thought I thought you were gonna say, Do you want to like be a character in it or something?
- 28:25SPEAKER_03: No, no, no.
- 28:26SPEAKER_03: They just wanted him, they just they didn't even want him to go to the premiere, they just asked if he would, and it's like he I mean, even Reese Witherspoon went to this like off-Broadway Cruel Intentions, the musical.
- 28:37SPEAKER_03: It's like you can have a sense of humor about it, but I don't think C V has a big sense of hume.
- 28:42SPEAKER_03: You know what I mean?
- 28:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: I was at a like um School of Visual Arts, and they had a um they had Josh Brolin coming in to like give a c like do a Q ⁇ A.
- 28:59SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: And they put up posters everywhere.
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: So this is like 2009, and they put up posters ever so this is like pre all of his like new like pre-his like superhero career stuff.
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: Um and they had him come in and they put up all these posters and everything, and they were like star of like these all the and they put all these prestigious films up, and then like someone went round and wrote on all the posters and the Goonies and the Goonies on every one of them.
- 29:25SPEAKER_00: And it's like so clear he did not so clear he did not want the Goonies brought up.
- 29:31SPEAKER_03: That's wild though.
- 29:32SPEAKER_03: Is he ashamed of the Goonies?
- 29:34SPEAKER_03: That's a great movie.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: It must be, I know.
- 29:37SPEAKER_03: I it's when you have to like because I get it.
- 29:39SPEAKER_03: It's like I can't watch myself on film.
- 29:41SPEAKER_03: I really like I can't watch like my own videos, like because I just get like so it's like I think I get like I can't imagine like being like Robert Pattinson like sitting in the movie premiere of Twilight and having to just sit there and watch it while all these people are like so it's like I can see why there's probably something where you're just like we're so humiliated that you're just like nobody bring it up ever again.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: But then you get like the others that embrace it, like um Halle Berry when she won for um for Catwoman and she won the Razzie and then she wanted to collect it.
- 30:16SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 30:16SPEAKER_03: And that's how you gotta be.
- 30:18SPEAKER_03: Listen, it's like just embrace it.
- 30:20SPEAKER_03: It's only embarrassing if you're like so uptight and self-serious that like if you're just like whatever, like and you know what, not to like victim blame, but maybe that's what the actor who played Michael's deal was.
- 30:31SPEAKER_03: Maybe he was just so fucking uptight about how bad Grease 2 was that if he had just embraced it and gone on a press tour and just you know because Michelle Pfeiffer doesn't seem to care and she's had her career.
- 30:44SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 30:45SPEAKER_03: I know this must have been early in her career too.
- 30:48SPEAKER_03: Like, how did they get her?
- 30:49SPEAKER_03: This was her first movie, and that's the only way you can get them.
- 30:53SPEAKER_03: Is she it didn't ruin her career.
- 30:56SPEAKER_03: Like that's weird.
- 30:57SPEAKER_03: Like she was good in this, I thought.
- 30:59SPEAKER_03: Like, she's very like cool.
- 31:01SPEAKER_00: I think she's the best one in it.
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: Definitely, but it's also like a CY you see, like, oh yeah, that's why you're you are now a star.
- 31:08SPEAKER_00: That's why that's why you went on to do so many things.
- 31:11SPEAKER_03: Dude, that that's another reason why I don't think I'm like a naturally born actor, because it's like a really good actor can do better than the source material.
- 31:22SPEAKER_03: Like, because it's like they can there was some, like I'm pretty sure it was the lady who was in the Moulin Rouge musical, not Nicole Kidman, but like maybe it was the understudy.
- 31:31SPEAKER_03: I can't remember if it was, but there's a scene in like the Broadway musical where like she has to like cry, and the actress is giving an interview, and they're like, What do you like do during that moment to make yourself cry?
- 31:42SPEAKER_03: And she's like, you know, sometimes the emotional inspiration is not gonna be in the source material, so you have to kind of get there in your own way.
- 31:50SPEAKER_03: It's like, and I was like, that is a good actor.
- 31:53SPEAKER_03: A good actor, it doesn't matter like what's on the page, they can like make something happen, and I cannot do that.
- 31:58SPEAKER_03: Like, I'm like, I am not good at that.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: No, I no, well, I'm not an actor, but yeah, I can't do that.
- 32:06SPEAKER_03: And Michelle Pfeiffer is just like, okay, it's a bad movie, but I'm gonna be good.
- 32:09SPEAKER_03: Although there's one part during the bowling song that I just noticed that's so funny because she's they zoom in on her face while she's singing to somebody, and she is not singing the words.
- 32:20SPEAKER_03: She is looking like watermelon bubblegum.
- 32:23SPEAKER_03: Like, she's like, I don't buy that.
- 32:25SPEAKER_03: But it's like, I'm like, you're not singing.
- 32:27SPEAKER_03: Like you forgot the words, and they were just like, we don't have time to do two takes, let's keep moving.
- 32:31SPEAKER_00: Keep moving, keep moving.
- 32:33SPEAKER_03: Keep moving.
- 32:33SPEAKER_03: We have to film this whole movie in two weeks.
- 32:35SPEAKER_03: Like, let's go, let's go, keep it going.
- 32:38SPEAKER_00: I really bet they did have like no time to film this.
- 32:41SPEAKER_03: Oh, there's like three settings.
- 32:42SPEAKER_03: They have like a bomb shelter in the high school and a bowling alley.
- 32:46SPEAKER_00: And again, why is there a bomb shelter in this movie?
- 32:49SPEAKER_00: But what is the reason for that?
- 32:51SPEAKER_03: They're like, we need to establish that it's the Cold War, like, and it's so like rapey.
- 32:57SPEAKER_03: Like, they're like, oh my god.
- 32:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I wrote that down.
- 32:59SPEAKER_03: This girl, it's so rapey.
- 33:01SPEAKER_00: Like, I wrote down the song is really rapey.
- 33:03SPEAKER_03: Well, and I'm glad they didn't go through with it because unlike Revenge of the Nerds, where they like do go through with it, and then you're just supposed to be like, okay, I guess that's like a ha ha joke.
- 33:12SPEAKER_03: But even the tone in this one is just like the boys being like, Guess you didn't get laid, D'ucchi, like, or whatever, and it's just like, and then that girl's back together with him, and it's just like, ugh.
- 33:22SPEAKER_03: What a horrible world.
- 33:24SPEAKER_03: But yeah, I I remember I didn't understand and honestly, this movie as a child provided me a lot of history lessons because I remember being like, Mommy, daddy, why are they in a bomb shelter?
- 33:36SPEAKER_03: My mom like explained the Cold War to me, and I was like, Oh.
- 33:40SPEAKER_03: So it was really educational for me.
- 33:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you learned a lot from this movie.
- 33:44SPEAKER_03: The point I'm trying to get across is that Grease 2 has done a lot of good in the world.
- 33:48SPEAKER_03: More good than evil.
- 33:51SPEAKER_03: Well, I mean it gave us Michelle Pfeiffer, so inspired me to be a musical songwriter, obviously.
- 33:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, really just I'm gonna I'm gonna give all of my credit when people are just like, what's your inspiration?
- 34:03SPEAKER_03: Like Grease Tool.
- 34:04SPEAKER_00: Just Grease Tool.
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 34:06SPEAKER_03: Because I looked at Grease Tool and I'm like, if someone has the confidence to do that, I can have the confidence to do my things.
- 34:13SPEAKER_03: Like that's very true.
- 34:17SPEAKER_00: But if this can get made, then I can make anything.
- 34:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, anything can get made.
- 34:21SPEAKER_03: And it definitely was straight to VHS, right?
- 34:24SPEAKER_00: I don't think it was.
- 34:25SPEAKER_00: No, I don't think it was.
- 34:27SPEAKER_00: I think it was in theaters.
- 34:28SPEAKER_03: Poor guys.
- 34:30SPEAKER_00: But I I read that it did cost 13 million.
- 34:34SPEAKER_03: I would have guessed that this movie cost$2,000.
- 34:38SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 34:38SPEAKER_00: There is there's no like what where where did the budget jackets?
- 34:43SPEAKER_00: What did the budget go on?
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: Because like is it like that?
- 34:47SPEAKER_03: Is it did they buy the whole like lot of motorbikes when he when he could just them having to tailor the leather jackets from the first movie to fit the new actors?
- 34:58SPEAKER_03: That's actually how they passed, was that they couldn't afford the tailoring.
- 35:01SPEAKER_03: So they were like, you have to be the size of John Girolta, the size of Kanicki, you have to like be all the right.
- 35:07SPEAKER_03: I remember I wanted a pink ladies jacket so badly.
- 35:11SPEAKER_00: Like, but I'm sure every girl did at one point.
- 35:14SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, I wanted one so badly.
- 35:16SPEAKER_03: And we would have this thing at my school called a sock hop, where we would like wear like poodle skirts, and like the boys would wear like jackets, and we'd like basically recreate these like 50s dances, and now that I'm looking back, it was probably just like racist nostalgia of them just being like, remember these like good times, and it's like good for who, like you know.
- 35:37SPEAKER_03: So I was like, but we would do that every year in elementary school, like elementary school as well.
- 35:43SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 35:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was elementary school, and I I'm like, but I loved Greece too, so I loved it.
- 35:50SPEAKER_00: You're like so on board with it.
- 35:51SPEAKER_03: Oh so on board, yes, exactly.
- 35:54SPEAKER_00: Like, come on guys, let's sing the bowling song.
- 35:57SPEAKER_03: My poor parents too, like that schools do this, right?
- 36:00SPEAKER_03: I'd be like, Mom, I have to buy a poodle skirt.
- 36:02SPEAKER_03: Where are we gonna buy a poodle skirt?
- 36:03SPEAKER_03: And she'd be like, Ugh, I don't, I oh my god.
- 36:07SPEAKER_03: Like, and then my friends, like moms who were all crappy, would be like, they'd be like, My mom like sewed me a poodle skirt.
- 36:12SPEAKER_03: I'm like, mom, will you sell me a poodle skirt?
- 36:14SPEAKER_03: She's like, No, we're gonna go to a thrift store.
- 36:17SPEAKER_03: Or like she went there was some store that we went to where they like found me a poodle skirt.
- 36:20SPEAKER_03: I'm like, maybe that was the whole scam was like the school was in scam with that business where they're like we gotta sell these poodle skirts, how are we gonna sell them?
- 36:30SPEAKER_00: Give you a cut.
- 36:32SPEAKER_03: Give you a cut, exactly.
- 36:34SPEAKER_03: But sorry, I will like Tangent a lot.
- 36:37SPEAKER_03: I forgot we were talking about.
- 36:39SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, we're just meeting the characters for the first time.
- 36:43SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay, yes, yes, yes.
- 36:44SPEAKER_03: Let's go through the characters.
- 36:46SPEAKER_03: Johnny is played by a 50-year-old man.
- 36:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Johnny's played by a 50-year-old man.
- 36:50SPEAKER_00: Um and one of the things I found interesting, read another bit of trivia.
- 36:55SPEAKER_00: Tom Cruise auditioned for the character of Johnny, and was told he was too small.
- 37:02SPEAKER_00: Which I found interesting because the guy is tiny.
- 37:05SPEAKER_03: He's really small too.
- 37:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:07SPEAKER_03: That's so weird.
- 37:08SPEAKER_03: And it's like he has literal visible wrinkles on his face, and he's supposed to be like a 17-year-old.
- 37:14unknown: Yeah.
- 37:15SPEAKER_03: This is one of those movies, this and like Saved by the Bell, when I was a kid, I thought that like when you were in high school you're an adult because high school was replayed by adults.
- 37:24SPEAKER_03: And when you got to high school and all these shrimpy kids still looked like kids, and I was still a kid, and I was like, Where now I'm at the age where the men that I saw in movies are actually the men that I'm dating.
- 37:35SPEAKER_03: Like, and I'm just like, oh, like, I thought it was that was gonna happen in high school.
- 37:39SPEAKER_03: Like, it's fucking crazy.
- 37:42SPEAKER_03: Like, they shouldn't, but it's also I guess weird to have actual kids play like sexual roles, so there's kind of like a line there, I guess.
- 37:50SPEAKER_03: But it's they gotta be at least 20, like, have a 25-year-old play it.
- 37:55SPEAKER_03: This guy was fully like had to have been like so old.
- 37:57SPEAKER_00: Like, but then I don't know if that's just because they were trying to like recreate the original Grease of where like everyone is old as well.
- 38:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, John Travolta definitely looks old.
- 38:07SPEAKER_03: Like, I thought that was a good one.
- 38:08SPEAKER_00: Kanicki is full is so old in that movie.
- 38:12SPEAKER_03: And it like it seems especially weird because the like crater face, like bad guy they have that's who's also in both movies.
- 38:20SPEAKER_03: Like, I'm like, well, he's like just like a 40-year-old like gangster.
- 38:25SPEAKER_03: Like, so then like, why is he picking on these high school kids?
- 38:28SPEAKER_03: And then you realize he's only supposed to be like college age or something, like it's like I don't know what the fuck is going on.
- 38:34SPEAKER_03: Like Zaza Gabor is supposed to be a 17-year-old woman, like please.
- 38:39SPEAKER_03: And not Zaza Gabor, but there's a character in the first movie.
- 38:42SPEAKER_00: That would that'd be amazing if it was her.
- 38:44SPEAKER_03: If they got Zaza to play Za, that would be huge.
- 38:48SPEAKER_03: Or Cha Cha, her name's Cha Cha.
- 38:50SPEAKER_03: Something like that.
- 38:52SPEAKER_00: I'm just imagining her playing a 16-year-old.
- 38:56SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, like, yeah, so that's so there's so there's Johnny played by a 35-year-old who's like the main T bird.
- 39:03SPEAKER_00: He's the main T-bird, yeah.
- 39:04SPEAKER_03: He's going through him and um Stephanie just broke up.
- 39:08SPEAKER_00: They've just broken up.
- 39:09SPEAKER_00: Uh Frenchie is back, and she she's the one meeting Michael.
- 39:15SPEAKER_00: Uh Michael is Sandy's cousin.
- 39:19SPEAKER_03: I completely forgot that that that they were.
- 39:22SPEAKER_00: Sandy's British cousin.
- 39:24SPEAKER_03: Because that's in honestly, and I had this mentality for the longest time where I'd be like, I probably didn't even know how far away England and Australia were.
- 39:31SPEAKER_03: I was just like, yeah, they're all it's all the same accent.
- 39:34SPEAKER_03: Like, it's fine.
- 39:35SPEAKER_03: Like, wow, Sandy's British cousin.
- 39:39SPEAKER_03: They didn't even try for that.
- 39:41SPEAKER_00: No, they were just like, whatever.
- 39:42SPEAKER_00: It's the same.
- 39:43SPEAKER_03: So you couldn't even find an Australian to do it.
- 39:44SPEAKER_03: Or they were like one Australian, like they were like, we made an exception for Olivia Newton John, we can't do it again.
- 39:50SPEAKER_00: It doesn't matter, nobody's gonna care.
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: Uh but we have to like connect him somehow to this movie.
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: We have to connect these people somehow.
- 39:58SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, that's what it is.
- 39:59SPEAKER_03: Like just the thinness.
- 40:00SPEAKER_03: They're like, we have to have some reason that this is the sequel, like yeah.
- 40:06SPEAKER_00: And then uh the T-birds are like teasing Michael about like uh him like uh being a nerd and like all this sort of stuff.
- 40:15SPEAKER_00: Um then it's like the flirty teacher.
- 40:18SPEAKER_00: Um there's one flirty teacher and a teacher that hasn't bleavage out, yeah.
- 40:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and she's flirting with all the kids, which is so creepy when if you consider what it what is going on.
- 40:28SPEAKER_00: And then there's the teacher who's having like a full mental breakdown, and what what's going on there?
- 40:35SPEAKER_00: Like what is happening?
- 40:36SPEAKER_03: Listen, mental health in the 60s was not taken seriously, and neither was uh sex with minors.
- 40:44SPEAKER_03: It's like that whole thing, like where it's just like, yeah, this man is just like the substitute teacher or whatever, like he's like having a full mental breakdown, like oh my god, wow.
- 40:57SPEAKER_03: He's taking like meds because he's twitching so much, and like yeah, and they're like, well, maybe if he fucks the hot teacher, he'll be fine.
- 41:06SPEAKER_03: Like maybe he'll like get over it.
- 41:09SPEAKER_03: I can't believe too that Michael is Sandy's cousin, and like what a weak-willed, pathetic family where they just like just get so obsessed with these like unavailable like people and then change themselves completely to like land them.
- 41:26SPEAKER_00: Well, here's the other thing.
- 41:27SPEAKER_00: Where is Rydell High?
- 41:29SPEAKER_00: Wait, where is it?
- 41:30SPEAKER_00: Is it just like somewhere America?
- 41:32SPEAKER_00: Is it just like anywhere America?
- 41:34SPEAKER_00: Is that what it is?
- 41:35SPEAKER_00: I don't think.
- 41:36SPEAKER_03: That's a really good question.
- 41:37SPEAKER_03: Where is it supposed to be?
- 41:39SPEAKER_03: Hold on, I'm googling it.
- 41:40SPEAKER_03: This is why we have the internet.
- 41:42SPEAKER_03: Where is Rydell High?
- 41:45SPEAKER_03: I think it's just supposed to be any town America.
- 41:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 41:48SPEAKER_03: They definitely filmed it in California.
- 41:49SPEAKER_03: It feels like a very Yeah, it's clearly California.
- 41:52SPEAKER_03: But Rydel High is actually three different real Los Angeles schools.
- 41:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but I don't think it's supposed to be set in any specific city.
- 42:02SPEAKER_03: I think it's like just very generic, like um suburban America or something.
- 42:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 42:08SPEAKER_03: Maybe not even suburban, like maybe just American generic 50s and 60s.
- 42:15SPEAKER_00: The reason I'm asking is because like why are the all these why is this whole like giant family moving to this area?
- 42:22SPEAKER_03: It has to be West Coast, I think.
- 42:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 42:24SPEAKER_03: It's gotta be West Coast, but they don't ever want it to be, yeah, there's some sort of mass migration between the Sandy Michael family where they're just like, they're they're running from something.
- 42:35SPEAKER_03: They're running from something.
- 42:36SPEAKER_03: Like, because all of them move there, and where is Sandy?
- 42:39SPEAKER_03: Is Sandy still there and she doesn't say hi to her cousin once?
- 42:42SPEAKER_03: Like, wow.
- 42:44SPEAKER_03: Rude family.
- 42:46SPEAKER_00: That's a good point.
- 42:47SPEAKER_00: Why is Sandy never in it?
- 42:49SPEAKER_00: Why did they do it?
- 42:53SPEAKER_03: Oh, please.
- 42:54SPEAKER_03: Like, yeah.
- 42:54SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 42:55SPEAKER_03: That's why now they do these sneaky contracts where the big actors have to sign on to the sequels when they do the first one.
- 43:02SPEAKER_00: Smart.
- 43:03SPEAKER_03: That's what Zach Alfinakis he got um he didn't want to do the second and third hangover, but he was contractually obligated.
- 43:10SPEAKER_03: And same, I just found out that um Jack Black is like contractually obligated to like six Kung Fu pandas or like something with a crazy amount they wrote into his contract.
- 43:20SPEAKER_03: But whatever, it's animation.
- 43:21SPEAKER_03: He's probably like, I'll take the checks, like you know.
- 43:25SPEAKER_00: I know I know that uh they got uh Sebastian Stan for like ten movies or something for the Marvel universe when they signed him on.
- 43:32SPEAKER_00: It's something truly ridiculous.
- 43:35SPEAKER_00: Like he was he came in as like a very small role, and they're like, no, you gotta sign for ten movies.
- 43:39SPEAKER_03: Just damn.
- 43:42SPEAKER_03: Well, they should have done that with Greece.
- 43:46SPEAKER_03: They all get held back.
- 43:48SPEAKER_03: That's the thing too.
- 43:48SPEAKER_03: It's like Frenchie's like back.
- 43:49SPEAKER_03: It's like, okay, was she a grade younger than them?
- 43:51SPEAKER_03: Do they ever explain that?
- 43:53SPEAKER_00: She's just like hanging out outside the school, just like peering in.
- 43:57SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 43:58unknown: Wow.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: Frenchie's all Frenchie already feels older in the in the original grease.
- 44:04SPEAKER_03: So much.
- 44:05SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, you're so right.
- 44:06SPEAKER_03: And then she flirts with the um what's the you know the sky angel singer beauty school dropout.
- 44:15SPEAKER_03: And that freaked me out because she's supposed to be 17 and this man's like 50.
- 44:21SPEAKER_03: Like just like booping her on the nose and shit, and I'm just like, eh.
- 44:26SPEAKER_03: Okay, it's a good thing.
- 44:26SPEAKER_00: It's like a very normal thing back then.
- 44:28SPEAKER_03: It's so normal back then, like, and still kind of is, but I guess at least now you're supposed to be ashamed of it.
- 44:33SPEAKER_03: Actually, ooh.
- 44:34SPEAKER_03: And I just thought of the movie Everyone Loves That I Hate, but I'll say it later.
- 44:37SPEAKER_03: Oh, perfect.
- 44:38SPEAKER_03: Okay, ready.
- 44:39SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 44:39SPEAKER_00: So let's let's go through this a little bit more.
- 44:41SPEAKER_00: So they um Michael, they turn they get Michael to like agree to play piano for the talent show, because he can play piano apparently.
- 44:49SPEAKER_00: Not a huge plot point.
- 44:51SPEAKER_00: Um but they like they kid it's the only way to like get him involved with all of them.
- 44:57SPEAKER_00: Again.
- 44:58SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 45:00SPEAKER_03: That's so funny.
- 45:01SPEAKER_00: Um and and then this is when he sees the uh he sees the teabirds and Frenchie tells him, like, uh, look, but don't touch um Michelle Pfeiffer unless you're a T-bird, basically.
- 45:14SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, it's such a psycho, like the the whole like where they're like the pink ladies belong to the T-bird.
- 45:21SPEAKER_00: It's so gross.
- 45:22SPEAKER_03: These rules were not established in the first movie.
- 45:25SPEAKER_00: Like where No, that wasn't a thing.
- 45:27SPEAKER_03: No, like where it's like, you gotta do it.
- 45:30SPEAKER_03: And also you're looking at it, it's like the numbers are off.
- 45:33SPEAKER_03: Like there's like only so many T-birds, only so many pink ladies, and they're all paired up.
- 45:38SPEAKER_03: And then that new the blonde chick is dating Johnny while he's still obsessed with Stephanie, and I want to be like, you're so much hotter than this, like, old man.
- 45:47SPEAKER_03: Leave him.
- 45:49SPEAKER_00: Just just yeah.
- 45:50SPEAKER_00: And she's all she's also not a pink lady, is she?
- 45:53SPEAKER_03: She is.
- 45:53SPEAKER_03: Oh she's not the yeah, she is Paulette or whatever you mean.
- 45:57SPEAKER_00: Paulette.
- 45:58SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 46:00SPEAKER_00: But they go so they go to the bowl, they go to a bowling match, and it's the pink ladies versus the T-Birds and the and the rival gang show up at that point.
- 46:07SPEAKER_02: But they still this is the s Oh my god.
- 46:12SPEAKER_00: This is the shoot the ball song that you're talking about.
- 46:16SPEAKER_03: Let's ball.
- 46:17SPEAKER_03: Okay, it's not shoot the ball, excuse me.
- 46:20SPEAKER_03: Please honor the artist's old.
- 46:22SPEAKER_00: Sorry, I wrote down shoot the ball, score tonight.
- 46:25SPEAKER_02: No, it's let's bow tonight.
- 46:29SPEAKER_02: We're gonna bow tonight.
- 46:31SPEAKER_02: And then we're gonna rock, we're gonna roll, we're gonna something, something, something, we're gonna ball.
- 46:37SPEAKER_03: Listen, that is just great songwriting.
- 46:40SPEAKER_03: Because what are they gonna do?
- 46:41SPEAKER_03: They just went back to school, and now what are they gonna do?
- 46:43SPEAKER_03: They're gonna bowl.
- 46:44SPEAKER_00: They're gonna bowl.
- 46:45SPEAKER_00: What else is there to do in this town?
- 46:47SPEAKER_00: There's nothing else.
- 46:48SPEAKER_03: And apparently it's enough to anger the other gang.
- 46:51SPEAKER_03: It's just sort of like, because that's the thing.
- 46:52SPEAKER_03: The T-Birds are like, they're not, they don't seem like violent or like actual greasers.
- 46:59SPEAKER_03: They seem like kids wearing leather jackets.
- 47:00SPEAKER_00: But just wearing their leather jackets riding around on their motorcycles.
- 47:03SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 47:04SPEAKER_03: I don't know what they're doing.
- 47:05SPEAKER_03: Like, and what 16-year-old rides a motorcycle?
- 47:08SPEAKER_03: You know, have you ever heard that 50s song Leader of the Pack?
- 47:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 47:13SPEAKER_03: I realized when I was re-watching that they literally just took the plot from that two-minute song and made it into an entire movie where it's just like, that's how I fell for the leader of the pack, because it has a similar thing where he like drives off of a I'm sure that's where they got the idea.
- 47:31SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's true.
- 47:32SPEAKER_03: I'm positive, like, but anyways, yeah.
- 47:36SPEAKER_03: So then they bolt.
- 47:37SPEAKER_00: So they bolt, and I wrote down at this point, Michelle Pfeiffer is so happy to be in this because she looks so excited, and she's the only one actually trying, it feels like.
- 47:44SPEAKER_03: Although you said that she's like not she doesn't know the words, so definitely didn't know the words, but that's because she was concentrating on the acting.
- 47:53SPEAKER_00: She looks so happy, and then that they do some kind of like weird ice skating dance moves at one point.
- 48:00SPEAKER_03: They do crazy shit in the bowling scene where they're like spinning around crazy pussy, and like the choreography is insane.
- 48:08SPEAKER_03: Choreography is crazy.
- 48:10SPEAKER_03: I loved it so it that's what's so weird, is I'm watching it being like, I'm sure this is objectively bad, but I have so much joy re-watching this movie.
- 48:17SPEAKER_03: It just it still makes me so happy and laugh so much.
- 48:21SPEAKER_03: Like, where it's just like they do the thing where like the couples just the way it's filmed, like they like pop into the screen.
- 48:28SPEAKER_03: Like, I'm just imagining like the core the very self-serious choreographer who's just like behind the cameras like okay, like go to point B, like you know, just like freaking out.
- 48:39SPEAKER_03: Like uh, and I love how long because this is the type of movie where they're like we have to fill time, like where they're like, you know, how how can we make this last as long as possible?
- 48:50SPEAKER_03: Okay, the opening song's six minutes.
- 48:52SPEAKER_03: Alright, bowl tonight, that's gotta be at least four.
- 48:55SPEAKER_00: Like it's so every song is so long.
- 49:00SPEAKER_00: And then like Michael comes in, Michael like shows up and he's got a guidebook on how to talk to all of them, and he's like trying to read through it all.
- 49:08SPEAKER_03: They're really trying to establish that he's like a nerd, and it's like I'm not buying it, he's too hot.
- 49:12SPEAKER_03: I'm not buying it.
- 49:14SPEAKER_03: They didn't even put him in glasses.
- 49:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they should have given they should have given at least given him glasses back then.
- 49:19SPEAKER_03: I mean, he's too hot.
- 49:24SPEAKER_00: And uh, this is the point where like Johnny decides to kiss Paulette in front of everyone, and then Stephanie like just shut decides to show him up and says, I'm gonna kiss whoever, like the first guy that walks in.
- 49:34SPEAKER_00: And there's an old man that walks in, but then like after that it's uh Michael and she kisses him on the mouth, like on the mouth, she kisses him on the mouth.
- 49:42SPEAKER_00: Where else is she gonna kiss him?
- 49:43SPEAKER_03: Kisses him square on the mouth.
- 49:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she kisses him and um and then they just leave and he's gonna go along with them.
- 49:53SPEAKER_03: Uh and swear the gender reversed, like it would just be really aggressive.
- 50:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 50:02SPEAKER_00: Uh and she he's he speaks to Dolores about Dolores is like this little 12-year-old girl that's like part like wants to be part of them.
- 50:11SPEAKER_03: Also played by just a short 30-year-old woman, like where she's just like she looks younger, but it's Pamela Adlon.
- 50:20SPEAKER_03: Are you fucking kidding me?
- 50:22SPEAKER_00: No, I'm serious.
- 50:27SPEAKER_03: I am like dead in shock right now.
- 50:29SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 50:30SPEAKER_00: I was so surprised.
- 50:33SPEAKER_03: Oh, my brain is like cannot compute this.
- 50:36SPEAKER_03: Wait, that is I am such a fan of Pamela Adlon.
- 50:40SPEAKER_03: How did I not know this?
- 50:41SPEAKER_03: I know I never would have put that together.
- 50:43SPEAKER_03: I I'm I have to like see the side by side.
- 50:46SPEAKER_03: I'm freaking out.
- 50:47SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 50:49SPEAKER_03: I feel like I vaguely like because it's like as soon as you said that, I was like, I feel like I did weirdly like see her IMDB one time, but it was like my brain like couldn't handle the information and immediately blocked it out.
- 51:03SPEAKER_03: Like that is her.
- 51:08SPEAKER_00: She's so young though.
- 51:10SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 51:12SPEAKER_03: That is fucking crazy.
- 51:15SPEAKER_03: Do you see that?
- 51:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 51:20SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 51:22SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 51:23SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 51:24SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 51:25SPEAKER_03: That's amazing.
- 51:26SPEAKER_03: Okay, okay.
- 51:27SPEAKER_00: See, you're still learning so much.
- 51:28SPEAKER_00: There's so much this movie that you're still learning so much about.
- 51:31SPEAKER_03: It's an educational movie.
- 51:32SPEAKER_03: It's never gonna stop learning.
- 51:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 51:36SPEAKER_00: But she's like the little tomboy-esque kind of character where she's like, uh, she's got a skateboard, she's like paying for everyone for some reason.
- 51:46SPEAKER_03: This group is just the most awful group.
- 51:48SPEAKER_00: They're so mean to everyone.
- 51:50SPEAKER_03: Michael should run as far away from them as he can.
- 51:53SPEAKER_03: They're horrible people, and they tried to kill him.
- 51:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 51:56SPEAKER_00: They they really do try and kill him, yeah.
- 51:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 52:01SPEAKER_00: Uh and then there's like a talent show.
- 52:03SPEAKER_00: Uh they find out there's gonna be a talent show, and um he Michael asks uh Stephanie out and he says, Are you free?
- 52:11SPEAKER_00: Uh are you free?
- 52:12SPEAKER_00: And he's sort of like, I'm free every day, it's in the constitution.
- 52:15SPEAKER_03: I remember that part.
- 52:16SPEAKER_03: It's like, I'm free every day.
- 52:17SPEAKER_03: It's in the constitution.
- 52:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 52:20SPEAKER_03: It's like cool.
- 52:21SPEAKER_03: That was such like a 80s and 90s thing in America, where it's just like, yeah, the Constitution says I'm free.
- 52:28SPEAKER_03: Like just like little lines about just like the founding fathers said that I can do whatever I want.
- 52:33SPEAKER_03: And it's just like, I feel like it was weirdly propaganda where it's just like Yeah, and she goes, and also it's like that's the that's the type of thing where it's like I'm unlearning, where it's like they teach like they teach you that like a man will a man will be like so persistent, like in a bad way, because it's like he's too much.
- 52:54SPEAKER_03: Like he's like, are you free tomorrow?
- 52:56SPEAKER_03: She's like, no.
- 52:57SPEAKER_03: Are you free the next day?
- 52:58SPEAKER_03: No.
- 52:58SPEAKER_03: Are you free the day after that?
- 52:59SPEAKER_03: No.
- 53:00SPEAKER_03: Okay, well, I'm gonna wait till you're failing your English class, you dumb bitch, and then I'm gonna force you to fall in love with me anyways, and then and that's true love.
- 53:08SPEAKER_03: And that is true love.
- 53:10SPEAKER_03: That's horrible.
- 53:11SPEAKER_00: So if you don't like if you don't I'm gonna keep asking you out, if you don't like me for me, I'm gonna change my entire personality until you do.
- 53:16SPEAKER_00: And then you're gonna fall in love with me.
- 53:19SPEAKER_02: And then once they actually start dating and that's not who he is, I'm sure it will completely work out.
- 53:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's definitely gonna work out.
- 53:28SPEAKER_00: So he he's he's in his uncle's fallout shelter, and he's like asking, he gets uh he takes money for the like to do homework for each of the like the T-birds.
- 53:39SPEAKER_03: And didn't it make you exhausted seeing him write all the papers out by hand?
- 53:43SPEAKER_03: I was like, man, yes, I am so grateful that we had computers.
- 53:47SPEAKER_03: Like I don't know what the fuck I would have done.
- 53:48SPEAKER_03: Like that's why everyone older's handwriting is so much better because they had to like I get writers' cramp if I like write for like more than a certain amount of time like by hand.
- 53:57SPEAKER_03: Like I really can't write more than like 10 minutes.
- 53:59SPEAKER_03: I don't know how they did that.
- 54:00SPEAKER_00: Well I wrote all my notes by hand.
- 54:02SPEAKER_03: That's impressive.
- 54:04SPEAKER_03: Is your handwriting as good as Michael's?
- 54:06SPEAKER_00: No, but I have terrible handwriting.
- 54:08SPEAKER_00: Because I'm script- I'm not even like looking at what I'm writing, I'm just like writing as I'm looking at the screen.
- 54:14SPEAKER_03: I just can't, I think I like broke my arm when I was a little kid, and so I just my arm gets really, really sore if I write for more than like 10 minutes.
- 54:22SPEAKER_03: So I need to just like like in school and they didn't let us have computers or anything, like I would just be like, I can't I can't imagine writing like a 10-page essay by hand.
- 54:32SPEAKER_00: No, no, I could not do that.
- 54:34SPEAKER_03: That's what really stuck with me about this movie, is just that one detail.
- 54:39SPEAKER_00: I mean you don't really see him writing like the the title of something.
- 54:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's just like Shakespeare.
- 54:47SPEAKER_00: And he get he does get complicated on his handwriting though.
- 54:50SPEAKER_03: Um, we should have screenshotted the when he's actually writing the essay because I love pausing those things and reading whatever the prop person like wrote.
- 55:00SPEAKER_03: Like, you know what I mean?
- 55:02SPEAKER_03: It's just like, hey Jim, how's it going today?
- 55:04SPEAKER_03: Or like whatever.
- 55:06SPEAKER_03: That's so funny.
- 55:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Shakespeare was a writer from England.
- 55:10SPEAKER_03: Shakespeare lived in England.
- 55:12SPEAKER_03: That's just all it says over and over again.
- 55:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 55:14SPEAKER_03: But he like, like a fake there was this one there was a thing on the internet a while ago where they use the same fake newspaper in like hundreds of movies with the same fake headline, and then somebody put it all together and was like, clearly they just have one prop that they reuse in Hollywood.
- 55:31SPEAKER_03: And I'm sure it is, like, if everything's shot at the same studio, they just have like a studio props list.
- 55:36SPEAKER_03: Like that's like the um there is like one high school that like so many things were shot at, like Big Little Lies, Orange County, probably fucking Rydell, um Book Smart.
- 55:48SPEAKER_03: It's like all the same high school.
- 55:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 55:50SPEAKER_00: But I like the anyways.
- 55:52SPEAKER_00: I like the let's let's potato chips that you see it like on it in every like TV comedy.
- 55:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's just like you know what?
- 56:01SPEAKER_03: The prop was here, we're not buying new props, and we're not paying for Doritos.
- 56:05SPEAKER_03: No.
- 56:06SPEAKER_00: Um But yeah.
- 56:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so then they go into the s they cut to the sex ed class, and I I wrote down, why is this a song?
- 56:12SPEAKER_00: It's it's really rapey.
- 56:14SPEAKER_03: It wasn't even sex ed, he was teaching about plant reproduction.
- 56:20SPEAKER_03: Didn't you didn't pick up on that?
- 56:22SPEAKER_00: No, I did not.
- 56:23SPEAKER_03: It was like a science, like, but you know when you're doing like the Mendel Square, like when you're in like high school and stuff, where it's like the um So then he's talking about.
- 56:32SPEAKER_00: I did really bad in science, sorry.
- 56:34SPEAKER_03: I did too.
- 56:35SPEAKER_03: That was my one subject where I was just like, I could try my hardest and I could not get a good grade, but it's like um he's te and this is where it was also very educational for me.
- 56:46SPEAKER_03: Because he teaches how there are like male and female plants, and then when people started talking about how weed grows, I'm like, I already know.
- 56:55SPEAKER_02: I watched Greece 2.
- 56:57SPEAKER_03: I know that the female plants something about a pistol, and then they all my favorite part of this song.
- 57:04SPEAKER_03: So this is like probably the most famous song in the show, Reproduction.
- 57:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and you know what?
- 57:09SPEAKER_03: It is horny because they're like humping, they're like just like thrusting.
- 57:14SPEAKER_00: It's not horny.
- 57:15SPEAKER_03: No, it is no it is though.
- 57:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it is.
- 57:22SPEAKER_03: I guess musical theater kids have a different idea of what horny is, but I was like, the actor boys are thrusting?
- 57:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 57:30SPEAKER_03: But um, yeah, so then they like it's all innuendo because I think this movie has to be like PG or something.
- 57:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think it is a PG.
- 57:39SPEAKER_00: As opposed to like the origin- wasn't the original like an A like uh an R-rating or an X-racing?
- 57:45SPEAKER_03: I think the original had to have at least been PG 13 because that they don't do the innuendo in the summer nights.
- 57:53SPEAKER_00: You know, it's like we got they do No, they do some innuendo i in uh some of the songs.
- 57:59SPEAKER_00: It's quite oh yeah, sorry, I've said so yeah, yeah, they do more they're saying it's a little bit more.
- 58:04SPEAKER_03: Well it's more overt in the Oh also because Rizzo gets pregnant and stuff, like it's all very overt, yeah.
- 58:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 58:10SPEAKER_03: But um in this one I think it had to be more PG.
- 58:16SPEAKER_03: And so yeah, the whole song is about they're in a plant like botany class or something, and like he's just teaching how plants, but then they're so horny, and it's supposed to like establish that like all the guys are trying to get the girls to put out, and all the girls are prude, and they have the two twins that are like supposed to be like the prude Christian girls, and they're like, ew, ew, ew.
- 58:37SPEAKER_03: Like that's like their whole part in the song.
- 58:40SPEAKER_03: And the horny teacher, like where they're just like, Oh, but this song is catchy.
- 58:44SPEAKER_03: This song is catchy.
- 58:46SPEAKER_03: Reproduction, reproduction.
- 58:49SPEAKER_03: And um, when they reverse, when they do the gender reverse, and the girls pretend to be the guys and make fun of them, and the guys pretend to be the girls.
- 58:58SPEAKER_03: It felt really progressive to me.
- 58:59SPEAKER_03: Felt really progressive to me.
- 59:01SPEAKER_03: You know?
- 59:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, okay.
- 59:03SPEAKER_03: Really, really progressive.
- 59:05SPEAKER_00: This movie is so progressive.
- 59:07SPEAKER_03: It's sort of actually it's like the opposite.
- 59:09SPEAKER_03: It's like 80s comedy of like like you know, women be like this, and men are different.
- 59:18SPEAKER_00: All men want is sex, all women want is love.
- 59:21SPEAKER_03: All women want is love.
- 59:25SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 59:26SPEAKER_03: That's so funny.
- 59:27SPEAKER_03: I'm just gonna make my comedy that again.
- 59:29SPEAKER_03: All men want sex.
- 59:31SPEAKER_02: All women want is a boyfriend.
- 59:37SPEAKER_00: So Michael buys a motorbike and he like uh he like does it up himself, he buys like a secondhand one and has sort of like learns how to do it up.
- 59:48SPEAKER_00: Um they come back to the bowling early and the rival gang show up and this rival gang.
- 59:55SPEAKER_00: Are they the ones that you said are in the first movie?
- 59:57SPEAKER_00: This rival gang.
- 59:57SPEAKER_03: So just the like crater face guy.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_03: Danny Zuko is a good thing.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_00: Love the description.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_03: I guess that's kind of fucked up, but that's how I think of him.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_03: Because like they also did a fucked up thing where they would like cast like acne and fat is synonymous with evil, like and like shit like that.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_03: So it's like if a guy has acne, that's how you can tell he's the bad one, and like if he's like fat, that's if a woman's fat, that's how you can tell she's like the bitch or whatever, like and because even also in the original movie, like in the musical, Jan is supposed to be chubby.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_03: Um, and they kind of that's like kind of the butt of the joke in like kind of a fucked up way where they have her like eating Twinkies the whole time and she like does this whole like song.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_03: And then um in the movie though, they cast her as a thin girl, so it doesn't really none of the jokes like make sense because she's supposed to be chubby and then like the t-board guy like still like loves her anyways, even though she's like chubby and stuff.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_03: And then in the in the movie it's supposed to be like it just doesn't it doesn't make sense.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_03: Like it's like none of the jokes like but so um yeah, so the crater face guy is the bad one.
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they shove it.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_00: He's the one who drag races with Danny Zuko in the first oh down the uh like that famous LA uh uh place.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_00: Uh you know what I mean like that.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah, the strip or whatever.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_03: But um and then he in the first movie dates Cha Cha.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_03: Like Chacha is like his girlfriend, and then Danny takes Cha Cha to the dance, which is what causes like conflict within the Yeah.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_00: I haven't seen that in a long time.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_03: I don't think that that character is in the musical, um, the rival gang member.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_03: Cha Cha is, but I don't think that character is.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_03: Um I think they just added that so that they could have like a cool like racing scene or something.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_00: I mean I like that I like that scene in the original.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_03: And in Greece too, I mean, we have bike choreography.
- 1:01:58unknown: Yeah.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_03: That's huge.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_03: That's where all the budget went, probably, is these fucking motorcycles.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_00: It must have gone on the choreography on that, like, and like and the stuntman and everything.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_03: Um I didn't get because there's one part where like the gang is like sitting there like in a triangle formation, and then Michael revs his like motorcycle up and drives through them, and they're all like, ah, and like jump out of the way.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_03: But it's like they just hadn't moved, he would have like crashed.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_03: I guess I don't know.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_03: I guess it was really he had figured all that out in like two days.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_03: He was like, I'm gonna become an excellent like warrior with my bike, like good for him.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_00: But yeah, like he shows up and he scares them away, I think, at this point, doesn't he?
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_00: He's he tried to find his bike and they all get all the rival gang gets scared away.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_00: Um and this is where they tell Steph that she needs to date a a T-bird to stay in the group.
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_03: Right, they finally established that rule.
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_03: Because then that is that must have been right at the time.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_03: They're like, okay, so we're gonna cut Frenchie and we're gonna make it so that like you have to date a T-bird or else you aren't allowed to be a part of this.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_00: Don't understand why.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_03: I don't get it.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_03: I don't get where that rule came from or why it wasn't established.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_03: Like because they they had to find some reason why she like couldn't date.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_03: And I think they like thought of it later where they're like, oh, maybe that will be it.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I imagine it came in the rewrites while they were like in the middle of shooting.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_03: Very creative, very, very creative.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_03: I would have given anything to be one of the writers on the sidelines who's just sitting there like Oh, that's so stressful.
- 1:03:37SPEAKER_03: Maybe there's like a rule where like the T birds, like you have to date if you're a pink lady.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_03: Because they don't say that the opposite is true though.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_03: They don't say that the T-birds have to date pink ladies, they just say that pink ladies have to date T-birds because they're not gonna be able to do it.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because the women the women have to have rules and the the men don't need rules.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_03: And the men don't need rules.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_03: And that's what I miss about the 60s.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_03: That's what I wish we could go back to.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_03: So he fights them just by riding his bike around them.
- 1:04:05SPEAKER_00: He uh he lights a cigarette and then jumps over a cop car.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, and all the girls are just like, ooh.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's the guy.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_03: And it's so it's so funny because he's wearing goggles, but it's like so clearly him.
- 1:04:21unknown: Yeah.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_00: I always find that funny and stuff.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_03: I love that.
- 1:04:25SPEAKER_00: They do it in a Cinderella story as well.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_00: Which she's like wearing the mask, and it's so clearly her and they never know it's her.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_03: That is like the most oh my god.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_03: I love shit like that.
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_03: I love corny movies like that.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_03: That is my favorite trope.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_03: Like, I love that so much.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_03: And it's so clearly him, like very distinguishable lower face.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he's doing this like weird, deep American voice where he can only say like one sentence, because otherwise he'll probably start talking in an English accent, like on like respect.
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_03: And but I guess he only sees her when it's dark.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_00: Maybe that's how until like one point in the movie.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_03: He's getting gas and they go on this like ride.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_03: That was another thing too, I learned about inflation because they were like, she was like, How much do you owe me?
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_03: And then it was like fifty cents, and I turned to my mom, like, how is he paying 50 cents for gas?
- 1:05:20SPEAKER_03: And she was like, Because things used to be cheaper and money is different value, and I and that's why I learned about the Cold War, I learned about both plant and human reproduction, and I learned about inflation.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_03: It's an important movie for my development, for no not the world, but for me.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_00: Well, uh this is the point where Lewis takes a girl to the bunker now, and they sit off they like the g all the guys sit outside and they like play that bunker no that uh emergency noise.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_00: And he's he starts telling her the siren, and he starts telling her about um the Cold War and like how we need to f like I don't exactly get what he's telling her to do here.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_03: I didn't understand you there.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_03: He mansplains the Cold Horde.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and then he says, let's do it for our country.
- 1:06:06SPEAKER_00: And it's the most propaganda like it's such that's a catchy one too.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_03: That's also he looks so weird when he's singing as a kid.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_03: It like really bothered me because he's opening his mouth like so wide, and it's like just do a little less.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_03: Like but I think I had a crush on the girl as a kid and didn't realize it.
- 1:06:25SPEAKER_03: Like, where I was just like, I was like, something about this I'm into, but I don't like the guy.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_00: Well, she puts on the nurse's hat and he and she covers him in bandages.
- 1:06:34SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 1:06:35SPEAKER_03: And that really worked for me.
- 1:06:36SPEAKER_03: I don't know what it was.
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_03: Like I was like, that's a weird new fantasy.
- 1:06:40unknown: Yeah.
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_00: I just wrote, but I did write down at this point, like, this is fucking insane.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_00: This sort this song and this mo this whole entire moment is just like it doesn't what is happening here.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_03: See, I can't imagine you being an adult watching this movie for the first time.
- 1:06:53SPEAKER_03: Like being like, it's like my brain can't compute what that would even be like because I know every beat of this movie before I ever saw it as anything weird.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_00: But this movie isn't for adults, that's the thing as well.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_00: It's not aimed at us.
- 1:07:06SPEAKER_03: It's not, it's really not.
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_03: But that's what's weird too, is like, what is she even doing with the bandage where she's like wrapping it around his whole head?
- 1:07:13SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, Yeah, she wraps it around his head and then one around his arm as well.
- 1:07:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and it the the song, even at the time I remember being like, this doesn't make sense.
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_03: Like, what's his argument here?
- 1:07:24SPEAKER_03: Is that we're in and like how is it like horny to like potentially have a nuclear bomb dropping outside?
- 1:07:32SPEAKER_03: Like, a nuclear bomb and we're gonna We're gonna fuck for like the purpose of the country.
- 1:07:38SPEAKER_00: I don't it doesn't make sense what is it?
- 1:07:41SPEAKER_03: It really doesn't make sense, and like um it's it's they all have these really weird like East Coast accents that I think they're just trying to sound like greasers, but yeah, just went because they're all like don't go out there, the Russians are dropping bombs, like they kind of talk like newsies, like it's very yeah, they really do.
- 1:08:03SPEAKER_03: It's really a choice, it's really a lot of acting choices, and I but then also they didn't all commit like the like scooter McGavin doesn't have any kind of accent.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_03: No, she just but the Danny's it's just him like just like well I got cast in a movie, good for me.
- 1:08:19SPEAKER_03: But yeah, so then she runs out and sees that they had somehow stolen the siren from the school, and we're like, because that's always like how do they just like have these sirens?
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_02: Like, and then she's like, Oh Anthony something, how could you?
- 1:08:36SPEAKER_03: And it's like, yeah, your boyfriend's a fucking great, like shouldn't happen.
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_00: It's is she his girlfriend?
- 1:08:45SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:08:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she's gonna be like I think I missed that.
- 1:08:48SPEAKER_03: Well I thought the they're going steady or whatever.
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 1:08:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:08:55SPEAKER_00: Things you miss on the first watch, you need to rewatch it, I guess.
- 1:08:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you gotta rewatch it a few times, I think.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_00: But uh yeah, so they have that that whole scene which is truly insane, and then like uh the she goes out, she goes to look outside for some reason, and he's like screams, and like all the boys fall in because they wouldn't be listening in.
- 1:09:16SPEAKER_03: Again, why would you The can what happened is he is trying to use this to get her to sleep with him, and she thinks that he's trying to convince them to enlist her as a nurse and him as a soldier.
- 1:09:29SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:09:32SPEAKER_00: That makes sense now.
- 1:09:33SPEAKER_03: It's fucking crazy.
- 1:09:34SPEAKER_03: So then she rushes out to be like, let's go.
- 1:09:38SPEAKER_03: Even though she thinks they're actively dropping bombs outside.
- 1:09:43SPEAKER_03: And he's like, no, babe.
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_03: And then she sees it was all fake, but then forgives him by the next scene.
- 1:09:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:09:52SPEAKER_00: She immediately doesn't care.
- 1:09:54SPEAKER_03: Immediately, it's just like that was annoying, but whatever.
- 1:09:57SPEAKER_00: Boys will be boys.
- 1:09:58SPEAKER_03: Like Boys will be boys, boys be being boys.
- 1:10:02SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 1:10:04SPEAKER_00: Uh and then like then you find out Steph Stephanie works at a gas station.
- 1:10:08SPEAKER_03: Hasn't been brought up the entire movie, doesn't get brought up again afterwards, but um Yeah, the writers were like, we have to find some natural way where the motorcyclist.
- 1:10:18SPEAKER_03: And also Michael's such a stalker.
- 1:10:20SPEAKER_00: It's like, you know where she works, like Yeah, all he does is all he does is follow her around and write uh other people's homework.
- 1:10:29SPEAKER_03: And I think they're trying to establish that she's like not rich or something.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_03: Like they're trying to like establish that she like has to work or something.
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_00: I mean I it doesn't mat it doesn't make a difference to the anything that happens in this movie.
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_03: Um and that's another good sign of a good movie, is that no plot point makes a difference to the ultimate storytelling.
- 1:10:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:10:53SPEAKER_03: So she goes on a daytime ride.
- 1:10:55SPEAKER_00: She goes on a daytime ride with him, uh, and they they spend the whole day together.
- 1:11:00SPEAKER_00: Uh doesn't know who he is still, still doesn't realise.
- 1:11:04SPEAKER_00: They drive, they ride back, he drops her off, and the T-birds chase him away.
- 1:11:09SPEAKER_00: They show up at the at the state uh at the gas station and chase him away.
- 1:11:13SPEAKER_00: Um then they see.
- 1:11:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, meet me at the talent show, and she's like, Why would I meet you at the talent show?
- 1:11:20SPEAKER_00: How does he know how does he know about the talent show?
- 1:11:22SPEAKER_03: How does he know?
- 1:11:23SPEAKER_03: His mouth looks just like Michael's, like so weird, but he's not British, so how it can't be the same guy.
- 1:11:32SPEAKER_03: Not that nerd.
- 1:11:34SPEAKER_03: Oh, and they sing what's their song?
- 1:11:35SPEAKER_00: It's um Going prowling tonight.
- 1:11:38SPEAKER_02: Oh go and prowling, walk, talk like a T-bird.
- 1:11:43SPEAKER_00: I want to say this is my favorite song in the in the whole of the movie.
- 1:11:48SPEAKER_03: Yes, and transition seamlessly into the talent show, right?
- 1:11:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:53SPEAKER_00: Cause they um and I but I wrote down it's f it's the first time it's felt like a Frankie Valley song out of the whole of the movie.
- 1:12:01SPEAKER_03: That's true, that's true.
- 1:12:07SPEAKER_03: I gotta cover that.
- 1:12:08SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna have to look at those chords all of these.
- 1:12:11SPEAKER_00: If they're even out there.
- 1:12:13SPEAKER_03: You know, you'd be surprised, but I would let I'm gonna get the sheet music for all of Greece too, and sort of comprise some sort of medley.
- 1:12:20SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 1:12:20SPEAKER_03: That'll be a good quarantine project.
- 1:12:22SPEAKER_03: I need to do something to keep myself entertained.
- 1:12:24SPEAKER_00: That would be funny.
- 1:12:25SPEAKER_00: I don't yeah, please let me know when you do that.
- 1:12:27SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna see it.
- 1:12:28SPEAKER_03: I will.
- 1:12:29SPEAKER_03: I'll submit it for the pod.
- 1:12:30SPEAKER_03: I'll give it to the pod.
- 1:12:32SPEAKER_03: For the pod.
- 1:12:33SPEAKER_03: That's so funny.
- 1:12:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so now we just go straight.
- 1:12:36SPEAKER_03: I mean, there really is no act one, two, and three.
- 1:12:38SPEAKER_03: They're just like Yeah.
- 1:12:40SPEAKER_00: Well, first of all, Ste Stephanie has to rewrite her paper because she's like apparently she's like failing.
- 1:12:45SPEAKER_00: And she gets Michael offers to help.
- 1:12:49SPEAKER_00: And he like Oh, that's right.
- 1:12:51SPEAKER_03: They just do the prowling song later in the like they do a reprise in the Yes, yes, they do a reprise, yeah.
- 1:12:58SPEAKER_03: Something like that.
- 1:12:58SPEAKER_03: Okay, yeah, so then this is where they have to establish very quickly that Stephanie does love the real Michael.
- 1:13:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but Johnny this is where Johnny says he tells uh Stephanie that it's over, even though like she's broken up with him.
- 1:13:11SPEAKER_00: He's like tells her it's over.
- 1:13:13SPEAKER_03: Um poor Paulette.
- 1:13:14SPEAKER_03: Like she does not need to settle for that.
- 1:13:18SPEAKER_00: What is she doing?
- 1:13:19SPEAKER_00: And then she's uh it's so sad.
- 1:13:22SPEAKER_00: She's the saddest character in this.
- 1:13:25SPEAKER_03: She really is, like, oh god.
- 1:13:30SPEAKER_00: Um and then this is the but this is the point where Michael just like wanders around really upset about everything.
- 1:13:36SPEAKER_00: He just wanders around the cafeteria and he sings his terrible song.
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_02: The Han Mashuri.
- 1:13:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:13:45SPEAKER_03: Where he's like, How come she doesn't know that I'm the cool rider?
- 1:13:50SPEAKER_03: Oh, we didn't even talk about her song Cool Rider that she does.
- 1:13:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_03: Stephanie.
- 1:13:55SPEAKER_03: That's a good song too.
- 1:13:56SPEAKER_03: Where I'm like, okay, so your only thing you're looking for in a man is that he rides a motorcycle.
- 1:14:01SPEAKER_03: You don't care about any other aspect that I need a cool radar.
- 1:14:07SPEAKER_03: But that's a good one.
- 1:14:08SPEAKER_03: She really she does look cool singing that song.
- 1:14:11SPEAKER_00: The funniest thing is every time you sing one of these songs, it just sounds the same.
- 1:14:14SPEAKER_00: But it's like songs all sound the same melody.
- 1:14:16SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 1:14:17SPEAKER_03: I'm so hearing that.
- 1:14:18SPEAKER_03: You know, I bet once I like if I do actually look at the chords, it will all be the same.
- 1:14:22SPEAKER_03: Like it will all be the same song.
- 1:14:23SPEAKER_03: Like, oh my god.
- 1:14:25SPEAKER_03: But she does that thing where she like climbs the ladder and just like rides on top of the ladder and then like climbs the ladder, and that's the whole choreography of that song.
- 1:14:34SPEAKER_03: Anyways, we had to talk about cool rider.
- 1:14:36SPEAKER_03: Okay, but now we're in charade.
- 1:14:38SPEAKER_03: Michael, because he's not even seen daydreaming.
- 1:14:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's daydreaming, he's wandering around the whole school, basically.
- 1:14:46SPEAKER_00: And yeah, not much to it, it's just very sad, and it's funny.
- 1:14:51SPEAKER_00: It's just it doesn't it makes me laugh.
- 1:14:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because it's just like a he has like a really just mediocre voice, like, and it's like long and boring, and you're just like, yeah, we get it, you're pretending to be two people, like but also like what made me laugh is just like he's so upset at like such a minor thing that does not matter in this grand scheme of things.
- 1:15:13SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 1:15:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_03: And he did it.
- 1:15:16SPEAKER_03: Like it's like you actively chose like what did you think was gonna fucking happen.
- 1:15:21SPEAKER_00: And again, just tell her you're what the guy and it's gonna be fine.
- 1:15:27SPEAKER_03: You know?
- 1:15:29SPEAKER_03: Um will it be though?
- 1:15:31SPEAKER_03: Like, that's what is kind of annoying.
- 1:15:32SPEAKER_03: It's like he could have just been like, by the way, you know that guy you made out with last night?
- 1:15:37SPEAKER_03: That's me.
- 1:15:41SPEAKER_03: I guess he's scared behind his charade.
- 1:15:44SPEAKER_00: Oh, so many layers to this.
- 1:15:47SPEAKER_00: Um this is when it goes to the talent show though.
- 1:15:52SPEAKER_00: And uh That's right.
- 1:15:55SPEAKER_00: And Michael shows up on his bike as the as the as he said he would, and he's chased away by the T-birds, and then they um and then the uh pink ladies all get in their car and like drive up because everybody's scared about the like what's gonna happen.
- 1:16:09SPEAKER_00: And everyone's screaming and and uh they he drives the dead man's curve and like drives over a cliff and just disappears, and they're all like, oh Will he must be dead, okay.
- 1:16:22SPEAKER_03: They don't ever do they ever address how he survived that, or are they just like he somehow survived it?
- 1:16:28SPEAKER_00: They don't address it until he shows they don't address it, and then he just shows up later on.
- 1:16:32SPEAKER_03: So it's like he did die.
- 1:16:34SPEAKER_00: But also, like yeah, but also where does he go and who is playing the music during the talent show in that case?
- 1:16:43SPEAKER_00: Because the whole purpose was that he pleased he's the musician.
- 1:16:46SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, there's so many plot holes like that.
- 1:16:49SPEAKER_03: It's like that's so fucking funny.
- 1:16:52SPEAKER_03: Literally, they're like, okay, you're the accompanist.
- 1:16:54SPEAKER_03: And then not only so it's like then they go and do the talent show, and Stephanie, they're just like, Well, Stephanie, I know your boyfriend just died, but like you're a winter, so you need to be in the show.
- 1:17:07SPEAKER_03: And then no nobody's even like Yeah.
- 1:17:10SPEAKER_03: Michael's not here to play piano.
- 1:17:13SPEAKER_03: Or maybe he did show up to play No, because he wasn't, they would have shown him.
- 1:17:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they definitely would have showed him.
- 1:17:21SPEAKER_00: It's just him recovering in hospital.
- 1:17:23SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 1:17:24SPEAKER_03: I do weirdly like the Girl for All season song though.
- 1:17:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh well I mean, uh it's wait, the the original song or the part that she sings?
- 1:17:34SPEAKER_03: The original song.
- 1:17:36SPEAKER_03: The part that she sings is like uh uh they're like they love their mental breakdowns in this movie, but I'll be yoga for us.
- 1:17:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's catchy.
- 1:17:46SPEAKER_03: They really are all the same song, like they had the shoe, I'll be yoga.
- 1:17:51SPEAKER_03: No, that's the closest to a real song though, it feels like yeah, that's a very classic, like it sounds like uh yeah, Frankie Valley Yeah, it's a like a doo-wop style song, isn't it?
- 1:18:00SPEAKER_00: Um and it fits it fits with the time.
- 1:18:04SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, then then there's the whole song that she sings, so like she like goes off onto some like on tan some tangent of singing her own song.
- 1:18:13SPEAKER_00: I don't know if she's supposed to be like imagining that she's singing that and she's reading singing the original song, but it doesn't really sort of I don't address that at all because it's something about her performance was so spectacular that it like wins it for them or something, right?
- 1:18:27SPEAKER_00: Not only does she win it, but nobody as soon as she finishes, they walk out and they go, and the winner is like they're like who voted on this?
- 1:18:39SPEAKER_03: They just They're all whispering, like, her boyfriend just died.
- 1:18:42SPEAKER_03: And they're like, Okay, let's just give it to us.
- 1:18:46SPEAKER_03: It's like why didn't she go home and process it for a little bit?
- 1:18:49SPEAKER_03: Like, oh my god.
- 1:18:52SPEAKER_03: Wow and yeah, they do the prowling.
- 1:18:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and he went and Johnny wins it because of that.
- 1:18:58SPEAKER_00: Um Johnny and Stephanie win the so only one person from each like act apparently can win.
- 1:19:06SPEAKER_03: Right, because the whole thing is that they're trying to find like the homecoming king and queen through his talent show or something, and then they go to this luau.
- 1:19:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so yeah, the next they that they say you ha everyone's gotta come to the luau the next day and you'll be crowned there.
- 1:19:22SPEAKER_03: And she still is like, I'm really upset that this guy's still gonna go.
- 1:19:27SPEAKER_00: And the whole thing of the luau is supposed it's clearly supposed to be like a parallel to the carnival at the end of the the original Grease.
- 1:19:33SPEAKER_00: It's supposed to be like the reminiscent of that.
- 1:19:35SPEAKER_00: But it's so song.
- 1:19:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's such a worse version of it though.
- 1:19:40SPEAKER_03: It really is.
- 1:19:41SPEAKER_03: It kind of reminds me of like when they did all the Saved by the Bell movie sequels, like where it's just like, you know, you're just following the same formulas, but it's just a lot, a lot worse.
- 1:19:51SPEAKER_03: Like the Mary Poppin sequel.
- 1:19:54SPEAKER_03: It's like they did like a weird like where it's like you're using all the same things, but it's just a worse version of all the songs that people love.
- 1:20:02SPEAKER_00: Like I haven't seen that yet, so I'm not I don't even know.
- 1:20:05SPEAKER_00: I just didn't run watching it.
- 1:20:07SPEAKER_03: If Lynn Manwell is listening, I really love and respect you, but it is bad, and also it's like it's bad.
- 1:20:14SPEAKER_03: Like, it's just like and he does this crazy like Cockney accent that is just like what are you doing?
- 1:20:21SPEAKER_03: Like, but the actual the movie itself, like all the actors are like fine in it, but it's just like so boring because it's like all I want to hear is like super felt.
- 1:20:29SPEAKER_03: I would rather have them just remade Mary Hoppins, like but and that's what I thought it was, and then when I found out it was a sequel with different songs, but it was like exactly the same.
- 1:20:39SPEAKER_03: I was like, this is so boring.
- 1:20:42SPEAKER_00: Pointless.
- 1:20:42SPEAKER_03: It was really boring.
- 1:20:43SPEAKER_03: I watched that at like beginning of quarantine, and I was like, I liked the Aeronauts better than this, and that was a horrible movie.
- 1:20:50SPEAKER_03: Like um, I watched a lot of bad movies at the beginning of quarantine, but it was really fun.
- 1:20:55SPEAKER_00: I've watched a lot of bad movies this entire quarantine.
- 1:20:57SPEAKER_00: I just liked I to be fair of liked quite a lot of them.
- 1:21:06SPEAKER_03: Like Greece 2, oh, this is your favorite.
- 1:21:10SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 1:21:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:21:11SPEAKER_03: Um I can see it.
- 1:21:12SPEAKER_03: I'll I'll let you think that.
- 1:21:14SPEAKER_03: You're having the love, it's coming through.
- 1:21:16SPEAKER_03: And then yeah, they sing Oh yeah, so then so they're at this point.
- 1:21:19SPEAKER_00: It's the lu out and uh the rival gang Crash It.
- 1:21:24SPEAKER_00: Oh no, so they sing the song first.
- 1:21:26SPEAKER_00: And they sing like I don't know what that but it's like a remake of um one of the songs, isn't it?
- 1:21:31SPEAKER_03: No, I think it it ends.
- 1:21:33SPEAKER_03: That's after Michael comes back.
- 1:21:34SPEAKER_03: Oh we belong together.
- 1:21:36SPEAKER_03: Yes, yes.
- 1:21:37SPEAKER_03: Instead of the wap bop baloo bop, it's like it's like a slogan.
- 1:21:41SPEAKER_03: It's just that, but worse and different.
- 1:21:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:21:43SPEAKER_00: So much worse.
- 1:21:44SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 1:21:45SPEAKER_03: And but also it's like, yeah, the rival gang comes to this like high school sponsored luau.
- 1:21:50SPEAKER_03: Like, where are the adults in this system?
- 1:21:52SPEAKER_03: Like, where are the adults?
- 1:21:52SPEAKER_00: And why is ever what are they doing?
- 1:21:54SPEAKER_00: Because all they do is just like come in and then just sit sit on their bikes.
- 1:21:59SPEAKER_00: Everyone's terrified of them and they haven't done anything.
- 1:22:02SPEAKER_03: They don't even have this or anything.
- 1:22:04SPEAKER_03: In the first one, it's like I think there's a little more of a threat or something.
- 1:22:09unknown: I don't know how to do that.
- 1:22:09SPEAKER_00: But they're a threat now, but I don't know what their purpose is in this whole movie.
- 1:22:13SPEAKER_00: Like they don't really do anything.
- 1:22:15SPEAKER_03: This is also where a large part of the$13 million budget went, was this luau, because they have like all these like costumes and flames in the pool.
- 1:22:24SPEAKER_03: I remember being like, how they have flames in the pool, like what kind of high school party has this kind of budget?
- 1:22:30SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah.
- 1:22:31SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:22:31SPEAKER_00: But um when the when the rival gang appears, that's um then crash everything.
- 1:22:37SPEAKER_00: That's when Michael shows up on the roof and jumps down.
- 1:22:42SPEAKER_03: How did he learn to do that in two months or whatever?
- 1:22:45SPEAKER_00: No, yeah.
- 1:22:47SPEAKER_03: He survived Dead Man's Cliff, he can jump off of roofs.
- 1:22:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:22:51SPEAKER_00: And he um he and then he hops the pool on his bike right over their faces.
- 1:22:59SPEAKER_03: Very happy days, wow.
- 1:23:01SPEAKER_00: And then all the rival gang members like try and um right and try and chase him, and they immediately land in the pool on their bikes.
- 1:23:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and that's when they're like stopped.
- 1:23:10SPEAKER_03: It's like a video game.
- 1:23:11SPEAKER_00: They're like, can't do anything now.
- 1:23:15SPEAKER_00: And all the ones is like, ah, yeah, everyone is screaming.
- 1:23:19SPEAKER_00: Uh it's it's very weird.
- 1:23:21SPEAKER_00: And it's just like it's very loud.
- 1:23:24SPEAKER_03: I want to know what the script looks like.
- 1:23:26SPEAKER_03: I would die for just the working script that they used for the.
- 1:23:30SPEAKER_00: Oh, I'm sure we can find it.
- 1:23:31SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna look it up.
- 1:23:32SPEAKER_03: I would love, I want to see how all of that was described on paper, like where it's just like, and now they bowl.
- 1:23:40SPEAKER_03: Like, I just it really is.
- 1:23:43SPEAKER_00: Still in song later.
- 1:23:45SPEAKER_03: It's crazy how much I love this movie and how bad it is at the same time.
- 1:23:50SPEAKER_03: Like, God, children really don't have taste.
- 1:23:53SPEAKER_03: They really don't.
- 1:23:55SPEAKER_03: Trust children's tastes.
- 1:23:57SPEAKER_00: But again, I was I was saying this to someone else the other day, but my my my favorite movie as a kid, I think, was Space Jam, and like that's not a good movie.
- 1:24:05SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, it's like you'll rewatch stuff like that, and you're just like, and that's when I realized like my parents would like hate taking us to the movies, and I'm like, because all these movies we loved were so awful, like they just have to watch like Ace Ventura and just be like, my god, when is this over?
- 1:24:23SPEAKER_00: I remember once yeah.
- 1:24:24SPEAKER_00: I just remember once as a child, my my dad taking me to see something, and he was uh he was like, Oh, we should go see Jurassic Park 2, and I was like, No, I want to see Batman and Robin.
- 1:24:35SPEAKER_00: So we had to sit through Batman and Robin, I'm sure.
- 1:24:39SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, that's so funny.
- 1:24:41SPEAKER_03: That would be a good one to do.
- 1:24:43SPEAKER_03: Did someone already do that?
- 1:24:44SPEAKER_00: No, nobody's picked that.
- 1:24:45SPEAKER_03: That's a good one.
- 1:24:46SPEAKER_03: That one actor is so bad, I don't know how he got cast in anything.
- 1:24:49SPEAKER_03: The guy who paid Robin.
- 1:24:51SPEAKER_00: Oh, Chris O'Donnell, yeah.
- 1:24:53SPEAKER_03: He is so bad, he's so stiff, and his voice is just like his line delivery is in everything he's in.
- 1:25:00SPEAKER_03: I'm just like, is this guy Hollywood?
- 1:25:01SPEAKER_00: He's had like a long TV career in like NCIS or something, isn't he?
- 1:25:04SPEAKER_00: Or like one of those shows.
- 1:25:06SPEAKER_03: Perfect for something like that, like where it's just like you know.
- 1:25:08SPEAKER_00: The one with LL Coljay, whatever that one is.
- 1:25:12SPEAKER_03: Hell yes.
- 1:25:13SPEAKER_00: Um it finished it basically it finishes off with like uh he reveals his face and they're all surprised, and then um and then Johnny's like, give me my jacket.
- 1:25:27SPEAKER_00: Jacket!
- 1:25:28SPEAKER_03: And that's that's when he finally so this was a moment too where it's supposed to show that he actually does love Paulette because someone throws it at her and then softer, he's like Jacket.
- 1:25:38SPEAKER_00: Jacket and then she smirks, she's like, I know what he's gonna do now.
- 1:25:43SPEAKER_03: He loves me, yeah.
- 1:25:45SPEAKER_00: And then he gives he gives Michael the jacket.
- 1:25:48SPEAKER_03: And now he's officially a T-bird, so Stephanie can be him.
- 1:25:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and so rather than changing the system, they work within it.
- 1:25:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:25:58SPEAKER_00: This is when they kiss and it goes silent, and it's like really creepy.
- 1:26:04unknown: Oh no.
- 1:26:06SPEAKER_00: Do you not remember this?
- 1:26:08SPEAKER_03: Chris is so no, yeah.
- 1:26:09SPEAKER_03: Like this is so bad.
- 1:26:10SPEAKER_00: Like And all you can hear is the kiss happening, like, and it's really like Yeah.
- 1:26:16SPEAKER_03: Ugh.
- 1:26:17SPEAKER_00: It's and it goes on for a while.
- 1:26:19SPEAKER_03: People kissing on film, you can tell there's no chemistry there either.
- 1:26:21SPEAKER_03: Like, you can tell.
- 1:26:22SPEAKER_00: No, they have apparently they hated each other.
- 1:26:25SPEAKER_03: And then look, he made enemies, that's what ruined his career, not this movie.
- 1:26:29SPEAKER_03: He made enemies with Michelle Piper.
- 1:26:31SPEAKER_03: He's a fucking brat.
- 1:26:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I bet he was, and that I bet my instinct was right.
- 1:26:36SPEAKER_03: He self-sabotage because he was like, Yeah, oh, I'm a serious actor who was in a terrible movie.
- 1:26:41SPEAKER_03: I'll never recover.
- 1:26:42SPEAKER_03: Like, and it's just like get over yourself.
- 1:26:45SPEAKER_03: Everybody has to take bad roles.
- 1:26:47SPEAKER_03: Like, yeah, you'll be fine.
- 1:26:50SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 1:26:50SPEAKER_03: Now I want to know his whole story.
- 1:26:52SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna really, I'm gonna dig into this guy.
- 1:26:54SPEAKER_03: I wonder if he has a Twitter.
- 1:26:56SPEAKER_00: Please message him if he does.
- 1:26:57SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 1:26:58SPEAKER_03: Interesting.
- 1:26:59SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 1:27:00SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna tag him in the synthesis.
- 1:27:02SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna tag him in this when we spray it.
- 1:27:04SPEAKER_03: He's like, like, you have an admire.
- 1:27:07SPEAKER_03: I'm like it's like Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise.
- 1:27:10SPEAKER_03: I'm like, I heard a crush on you when I was nine and you were a full adult.
- 1:27:14SPEAKER_03: He's probably like 60 now.
- 1:27:16SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 1:27:17SPEAKER_00: He has to be.
- 1:27:18SPEAKER_00: He has to be in like his 60s, because what was he what was he in this?
- 1:27:22SPEAKER_03: Like had to be 30.
- 1:27:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and this is early 80s.
- 1:27:27SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 1:27:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so they get to live happily ever after.
- 1:27:30SPEAKER_03: They never address the issue that you have to belong to a T-bird.
- 1:27:33SPEAKER_03: She's just like, well, the man I love is now a T-bird, but neither of them knows anything about each other still.
- 1:27:39SPEAKER_03: And she's like, she's not even like, it's you.
- 1:27:43SPEAKER_03: She's just like You're dead.
- 1:27:46SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:27:47SPEAKER_03: I thought you were dead.
- 1:27:48SPEAKER_03: Like, and he's like, Well, I'm not, I'm not gonna explain how I lived either.
- 1:27:53SPEAKER_03: Sorry, babe.
- 1:27:56SPEAKER_03: Damn.
- 1:27:57SPEAKER_03: I wanna do a sequel about their breakup.
- 1:28:01SPEAKER_00: I mean you can make a sketch out of it.
- 1:28:03SPEAKER_03: And it's like for like five people, like everyone else is like, we've never seen Greece 2, Marsha.
- 1:28:09SPEAKER_03: I'm like, uh oh.
- 1:28:11SPEAKER_03: You have it?
- 1:28:13SPEAKER_03: It's so funny.
- 1:28:14SPEAKER_00: Gamela Adlon to start it.
- 1:28:17unknown: Oh my god.
- 1:28:18SPEAKER_03: I still it's like my mind moved on from that.
- 1:28:21SPEAKER_03: It's like I can't hold those two truths in my head at all.
- 1:28:23SPEAKER_00: I forgot that, and then I'm looking at I just like see her name right below where I'm looking at the moment.
- 1:28:28SPEAKER_03: And she was so young compared to the cast.
- 1:28:30SPEAKER_03: Like she must have been really young.
- 1:28:32SPEAKER_03: Like she's only 40 something.
- 1:28:34SPEAKER_00: So I I looked it up.
- 1:28:36SPEAKER_00: He would he isn't about to be 61, he's 60 at the moment.
- 1:28:40SPEAKER_03: So he was like 30.
- 1:28:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:28:42SPEAKER_00: Or no?
- 1:28:43SPEAKER_00: Emma Adlon was born in 66, so she would have been like 15, 16.
- 1:28:50SPEAKER_00: 66 to 82.
- 1:28:52SPEAKER_03: I don't know, math.
- 1:28:54SPEAKER_03: 14?
- 1:28:56SPEAKER_00: Uh 16?
- 1:28:57SPEAKER_03: 16.
- 1:28:58SPEAKER_03: God, I need to be better at math and embarrass myself if that's wrong.
- 1:29:03SPEAKER_03: No, I'm like, wait, what is it?
- 1:29:05SPEAKER_03: This was made in 1981.
- 1:29:07SPEAKER_00: 82?
- 1:29:08SPEAKER_03: 82.
- 1:29:09SPEAKER_03: And you said she was born in 1967?
- 1:29:11SPEAKER_00: 66.
- 1:29:12SPEAKER_03: 66.
- 1:29:14SPEAKER_03: My brain's going to give up.
- 1:29:15SPEAKER_03: I think it's 16, yeah.
- 1:29:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:29:17SPEAKER_03: You know what?
- 1:29:18SPEAKER_03: The education system in both America and the UK has clearly failed us, but that's alright.
- 1:29:25SPEAKER_03: That's alright.
- 1:29:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:29:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so it ends with like a reprise of it's not even a reprise, is it?
- 1:29:32SPEAKER_00: It's like a remake.
- 1:29:34SPEAKER_03: We'll be together.
- 1:29:36SPEAKER_00: Don't know, yeah.
- 1:29:38SPEAKER_00: It's like a fake version of it.
- 1:29:40SPEAKER_03: Instead of like examining how toxic their friend group is, they're just like, we're gonna be together forever.
- 1:29:47SPEAKER_03: Pink ladies and T-birds.
- 1:29:50SPEAKER_03: It's like, yeah, because the T-birds don't even defend their own turf.
- 1:29:53SPEAKER_03: This fucking new guy had to step in.
- 1:29:55SPEAKER_03: Like, and as if in real life Johnny would let another alpha in the group.
- 1:30:00SPEAKER_03: Absolutely not.
- 1:30:01SPEAKER_03: There's no way.
- 1:30:03SPEAKER_03: No fucking way.
- 1:30:04SPEAKER_00: He's got his Napoleonic complex from being like half behind everyone else.
- 1:30:09SPEAKER_03: What's your overall review?
- 1:30:10SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, he definitely has a Napoleon complex.
- 1:30:12SPEAKER_03: There's no way he's letting a tall, like gorgeous, like British motorcycle man That's half his age.
- 1:30:20SPEAKER_03: That's that's 25 when he's like 40 already, still in high school, repeating it for the ninth billionth time.
- 1:30:26SPEAKER_03: Like oh, and poor Frenchie obviously was held back, but then graduated halfway through the movie.
- 1:30:33SPEAKER_00: Well she went to beauty school, but then dropped out and then had to go back.
- 1:30:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:30:39SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 1:30:40SPEAKER_03: Um so what's your overall feelings?
- 1:30:43SPEAKER_03: You loved it.
- 1:30:44SPEAKER_03: I'm hearing that you loved it.
- 1:30:47SPEAKER_00: I I I don't want to talk badly, but I absolutely hated it.
- 1:30:53SPEAKER_00: I think I don't like anything about the music.
- 1:30:55SPEAKER_00: I don't like I I don't I don't think it has a full.
- 1:30:58SPEAKER_03: Bolt tonight.
- 1:31:00SPEAKER_03: Well, you didn't like Bull tonight.
- 1:31:02SPEAKER_00: I did not like Boltonite.
- 1:31:04SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 1:31:05SPEAKER_03: You know what?
- 1:31:06SPEAKER_00: But this is not about me, this is about you and what you like about it.
- 1:31:09SPEAKER_00: It's not about me.
- 1:31:11SPEAKER_03: Bull tonight, reproduction.
- 1:31:12SPEAKER_03: As I've explained, it taught me a lot of history lessons that I would not have learned at that age otherwise.
- 1:31:18SPEAKER_03: I learned about the Cold War.
- 1:31:19SPEAKER_03: I learned about manipulating women for sex.
- 1:31:22SPEAKER_03: I learned about plant reproduction.
- 1:31:26SPEAKER_03: Um, I learned about inflation.
- 1:31:29SPEAKER_03: You know, overall this was a pinnacle of a lot of growth for me.
- 1:31:33SPEAKER_03: And I did love the songs.
- 1:31:34SPEAKER_03: Like, uh reproduction, reproduction, like the deep bass voice, and then like the nasally, like none of the actors can sing.
- 1:31:44SPEAKER_03: I think that's really important when you when you cast a musical, is that nobody should be that good of a singer.
- 1:31:50SPEAKER_03: That's really, really clutch.
- 1:31:52SPEAKER_00: I mean, they're trying to be real realistic to what a high school singing experience is like.
- 1:31:58SPEAKER_03: That's so true.
- 1:31:59SPEAKER_03: It's like you have these whole musicals, you're like, oh god, like oh my god.
- 1:32:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, looking back, like it's not a good movie, but I still was thoroughly entertained watching it.
- 1:32:13SPEAKER_03: Like, and it was like, because I I think it just like is memories of me, just like I was so entertained by it as a kid.
- 1:32:19SPEAKER_03: I loved it way more than the original.
- 1:32:21SPEAKER_03: The original was too complex.
- 1:32:23SPEAKER_03: We don't need complex plot points.
- 1:32:25SPEAKER_03: We need Fanny's cousin from England, even though she's Australian.
- 1:32:30SPEAKER_03: We need so they must have been like distant cousins, like unless she moved recently.
- 1:32:36SPEAKER_03: Like, I don't know, maybe that moves around a lot.
- 1:32:41SPEAKER_03: But and you have, yeah, quick.
- 1:32:43SPEAKER_03: I I thought that I would be able to learn to ride a motorcycle in like a week if I really, really wanted to.
- 1:32:48SPEAKER_03: And I guess that's not a good one.
- 1:32:49SPEAKER_03: Have you ever tried never tried, not a big motorcycle girl, but you know, I'm just looking for a cool rider at the end of the day.
- 1:32:58SPEAKER_03: Like just want a cool, cool rider.
- 1:33:02SPEAKER_00: You just got you gotta work at the gas station.
- 1:33:05SPEAKER_03: I know, and she has like a cool red leather jacket, and all the girls are wearing pink, and that's how she's a rebel.
- 1:33:12SPEAKER_03: Like, she was like, I think she was kind of like tomboyish, which I liked too, because she was like cool.
- 1:33:17SPEAKER_00: Very much so.
- 1:33:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I was like, that's cool.
- 1:33:20SPEAKER_03: But tomboys are always like thin and blonde, and it's like, yeah, well, you can get away with it.
- 1:33:25SPEAKER_03: But um, yeah, I mean, if I'm going out of a rating of 10, I'm gonna give it a solid 9.5.
- 1:33:33SPEAKER_00: Just absolute the only person ever.
- 1:33:38SPEAKER_03: Just a classic, just like not even the writers give it that.
- 1:33:43SPEAKER_03: No, the writers that don't even put it on their resume.
- 1:33:46SPEAKER_03: Like, they're just like, I don't know what you're talking about.
- 1:33:48SPEAKER_03: They're like, I saw you in the credits.
- 1:33:50SPEAKER_03: It's like not me, it wasn't me.
- 1:33:52SPEAKER_03: Different writer.
- 1:33:53SPEAKER_03: They're like, the guild only allows you to have one person of the same name.
- 1:33:56SPEAKER_02: It's like, it wasn't me.
- 1:33:58SPEAKER_03: I didn't write it.
- 1:34:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:34:01SPEAKER_03: No, but in like reality, it's like it's a weird thing for me because I cannot say, even though I know objectively it was a bad movie, it's just it's just so nostalgic.
- 1:34:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's so nostalgic for me that it's just like, to me, still a perfect film, perfectly cast, introduced a lot of great actors to the world.
- 1:34:21SPEAKER_03: Michelle Pfeiffer, Pam Adlin.
- 1:34:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you know, where would we be without them?
- 1:34:27SPEAKER_03: Like, you know.
- 1:34:28SPEAKER_03: Michelle Pfeiffer's in the new hairspray movie, too, and I kind of liked that because I was like, I feel like she just likes musicals.
- 1:34:34SPEAKER_03: Like, I like when actors don't take themselves so seriously that they can't do like silly, campy stuff later in their career.
- 1:34:40SPEAKER_00: And I I like that new hairspray as well.
- 1:34:42SPEAKER_00: That's a fun movie.
- 1:34:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like oh my god, Zach Efron though, in that movie.
- 1:34:46SPEAKER_03: Uh just too his face is too animated.
- 1:34:50SPEAKER_03: It's like I just need it to become like a notch, like one notch.
- 1:34:54SPEAKER_00: But everyone It's the Disney Disney style of acting, isn't it though?
- 1:34:56SPEAKER_00: It does come off a high school musical.
- 1:34:59SPEAKER_00: Very good.
- 1:34:59SPEAKER_00: AKA Greens 3.
- 1:35:01SPEAKER_03: I tried to watch high school musical, and as you can tell by this, I really enjoy like bad musicals as much as I love but that's what's weird too.
- 1:35:10SPEAKER_03: I was too old for high school musical, so maybe if I were a kid I would have the same nostalgia.
- 1:35:15SPEAKER_03: But I watched it for the first time when I was like, I don't know, like older, like in my twenties, probably, just to be like, okay, everyone's watched this.
- 1:35:24SPEAKER_03: Let me just see.
- 1:35:25SPEAKER_03: I it wasn't even fun bad for me.
- 1:35:28SPEAKER_03: Like I was just like, this is terrible.
- 1:35:31SPEAKER_00: I was just too past the age for it.
- 1:35:33SPEAKER_00: Update it didn't it meant it just did nothing for me.
- 1:35:36SPEAKER_03: I was too past the age, but it probably would have been fun if I were 10.
- 1:35:39SPEAKER_03: I probably would have been really into it.
- 1:35:40SPEAKER_03: I'm sure I would have to do it.
- 1:35:41SPEAKER_00: I mean my my sisters still love it, and they're like so they were like the perfect age for it.
- 1:35:46SPEAKER_00: They yeah.
- 1:35:46SPEAKER_00: They're like 23 now.
- 1:35:48SPEAKER_02: So I still love Greece too.
- 1:35:50SPEAKER_00: There you go.
- 1:35:53SPEAKER_00: Well let's let's let's move on to the final segment then, which is uh what you mentioned, which you mentioned it earlier, which is the movie that people love and is well reviewed that you hate and think is bad.
- 1:36:04SPEAKER_03: Yes, it hit me because we were talking about how it's like creepy that the teacher in this is hitting on the students and stuff.
- 1:36:15SPEAKER_03: And even though I know this is supposed to be part of the commentary, I really did not like American Beauty.
- 1:36:22unknown: Oh.
- 1:36:22SPEAKER_03: I feel like everybody like loves that movie and finds it to be really genius.
- 1:36:28SPEAKER_03: It made me uncomfortable when I watched it.
- 1:36:30SPEAKER_00: I don't When did you first see it?
- 1:36:35SPEAKER_03: And it like just was like I just hated it.
- 1:36:38SPEAKER_03: And I think I tried to rewatch it, but it's just like I don't even know.
- 1:36:43SPEAKER_03: Did a man direct that movie?
- 1:36:45SPEAKER_03: I assume I'm gonna.
- 1:36:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's San Mendes.
- 1:36:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like it's I'm just like sick of like perversion as high art.
- 1:36:53SPEAKER_03: You know what I mean?
- 1:36:53SPEAKER_03: Like sometimes I think there's a commentary there, but it's like you made an artistic film about how old men want to fuck young women.
- 1:37:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:37:00SPEAKER_03: Good for you.
- 1:37:01SPEAKER_03: Like, you know, like and the poster is like I did this project called Headless Women of Hollywood, where it talks about how like you like fragment women's bodies for the male gaze, like, and um the poster is like just her like belly button with the rose over it, and it's just like the it's kind of like Lolita, where it's like you weren't supposed to sexualize the kid.
- 1:37:24SPEAKER_03: Like that was the whole point of the like the guy said, like, don't make covers where you're sexualizing the kid.
- 1:37:29SPEAKER_03: The whole point is like don't sexualize the kid.
- 1:37:32SPEAKER_03: And American Beauty, it's like Hollywood does that a lot, where it's like it's not a commentary on sexualizing kids if you're actually just sexualizing the fucking teenagers, like and making it this kind of like not acceptable, but taboo in a hot way, sort of like you know, and then men just get to be like, This is how we all feel, and it's like, and like everyone else in the world, you need to control it, you need to figure out where the line law like the line lies with like harm, like, because there was this really creepy interview with Megan Fox where like Jimmy Kimmel's like she's talking about how Michael Bay, you know what I'm talking about, like she's talking about what Michael Bay sexualized her as a 15-year-old and made her like pour water over her head or something like that, and then Jimmy Kimmel makes some joke about like, well, that's what I go all guys want, he's just the one brave enough to go for it.
- 1:38:22SPEAKER_03: And it's like that's the whole Hollywood thing where it's just like even like 18 is like because I think in England even the age of consent is 16, right?
- 1:38:29SPEAKER_00: 16, yeah.
- 1:38:30SPEAKER_03: And like, because it's such an arbitrary number just created by men being like, at this point you can't be punished.
- 1:38:36SPEAKER_03: And it's like that's why I always like whenever like I'm like, nobody is stopping Leonardo DiCaprio from like dating like women way younger than him.
- 1:38:46SPEAKER_03: So it's like I mean, it's like it's fine, it's like sure, of course, there's this whole idea of like they're two consenting adults.
- 1:38:52SPEAKER_03: It's like, but the only like refuge we have is just to be like those men are pathetic creeps.
- 1:38:58SPEAKER_00: Like that's the like yeah, you know, why does he stop dating every one of them at 25?
- 1:39:03SPEAKER_00: Like, what is going on there?
- 1:39:05SPEAKER_03: Because that's where he emotionally developed up into and then he stopped, and so then it's like same with um uh Ryan Adams dated.
- 1:39:13SPEAKER_03: I that's why I love um Phoebe Burgess or whatever, because um her song Emotion Sickness is about Ryan Adams, and they dated when she was super young, and like I think she's still dating an older guy.
- 1:39:28SPEAKER_03: Like the thing is is like you're not gonna be punished, but it's just like they don't even want to put up with the small social consequence of people just being like, Well, you seem pathetic to me.
- 1:39:39SPEAKER_03: Like, they are so enraged, like they're all these people just being like, Well, maybe he dates them because they're hot, and it's like, of course, like nobody's saying it's just like he can deal the richest, like, fucking successful actor in the world can deal with fucking young women on Twitter who are tired of old men just aging women out of their like dating cycle to just be like he's pathetic.
- 1:40:03SPEAKER_03: It's like I'm sorry, that's your only consequence, and I do not feel bad for you.
- 1:40:06SPEAKER_03: You can fucking deal with it, like and men have to defend other men from even having to deal with any slight social consequences, like where it's just like, you know what, you'll actually be fine.
- 1:40:16SPEAKER_03: He'll be fine.
- 1:40:17SPEAKER_03: So I'm gonna keep talking shit.
- 1:40:19SPEAKER_03: Like it's like he'll be fine.
- 1:40:20SPEAKER_03: At the end of the day, he's fucking fine.
- 1:40:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:40:24SPEAKER_03: But so I didn't like American Beauty because I felt like it was too much of like a freepy.
- 1:40:31SPEAKER_03: It's like you're not you're you are criticized.
- 1:40:33SPEAKER_00: I mean and that's it doesn't hold up as well.
- 1:40:36SPEAKER_00: It does not hold up.
- 1:40:37SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:40:39SPEAKER_00: Even taking out the Kevin Kevin Spacey aspect of it, it doesn't hold up as a movie itself.
- 1:40:44SPEAKER_00: Um it's bad.
- 1:40:47SPEAKER_00: It's not a it's not a good movie, even.
- 1:40:49SPEAKER_00: Like it it I think I read that it's like considered, other than I think Crash, it's considered like the worst best picture winner of like the last couple of decades or something like that.
- 1:41:00SPEAKER_03: It did win best picture.
- 1:41:01SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 1:41:01SPEAKER_00: It won Best Pic it won everything.
- 1:41:03SPEAKER_03: I mean, so did Titanic, and I was re-watching that and I'm like, this is an objectively bad film.
- 1:41:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:41:09SPEAKER_03: Like it's so long, and that's like so much of it is just like insanely bad.
- 1:41:15SPEAKER_03: Like I remember I saw it with my dad, and he was just like, I can't believe I just sat through that whole movie.
- 1:41:20SPEAKER_03: Like it's like three hours long.
- 1:41:22SPEAKER_03: Like, my god.
- 1:41:24SPEAKER_03: But yeah, that's I should that's the thing is I don't want to rewatch American Beauty to figure out why I don't like it, but I just know I don't like it.
- 1:41:32SPEAKER_00: It's yeah, I think people have like grown to hate it over the years now.
- 1:41:36SPEAKER_00: I don't think it's like as well loved as it was when it came out by any stretch.
- 1:41:40SPEAKER_03: Except for by like weirdos, because like when I tweeted the um like just the fact that it was a headless woman on the cover, there were all these people like that's the like that's a huge iconic moment of the film.
- 1:41:54SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, I encourage it.
- 1:41:57SPEAKER_03: And it's every cover is either just her belly button or the full her full body with that.
- 1:42:03SPEAKER_03: And it's just like so it's like you know that you're gonna be able to do it.
- 1:42:05SPEAKER_03: When did you tweet that?
- 1:42:06SPEAKER_00: Was that recently or was it a while ago?
- 1:42:08SPEAKER_03: No, it was like a few years ago, because I stopped doing that project like a couple years.
- 1:42:12SPEAKER_03: I mean, not like actively, I just kind of didn't keep up with it.
- 1:42:14SPEAKER_03: But it was like, so I just would and I wouldn't even tweet like with commentary, it would just be the whole thing was like I just wanted to show how common the trope was of like headless women on posters, and then uh everybody because like one of them is the graduate, because even though the woman was actually a more famous actor than Dustin Hoffman at the time, it was just her leg on the cover, and then all these people acted like I didn't understand film, like because they would just be like, that's an iconic moment.
- 1:42:45SPEAKER_03: I'm like, I'm not saying it's not an iconic moment.
- 1:42:48SPEAKER_03: I'm saying that there are a lot of movie posters that showcase headless women.
- 1:42:52SPEAKER_03: Like, it's just like it's not I'm not saying I hate the graduate.
- 1:42:56SPEAKER_03: Although I didn't love it as much as a lot of people did.
- 1:43:00SPEAKER_03: That's another one where I find it I find it a little weird and and overrated, but I used to love it and now I'm like I haven't seen it in a long time, and now I'm thinking back on it.
- 1:43:11SPEAKER_00: I'm like, maybe I won't like it as much anymore.
- 1:43:14SPEAKER_03: There's things too where yeah, they might not hold up, but you can still like appreciate the art behind it, but I think I just reached my limit with art.
- 1:43:21SPEAKER_03: I'm just like, you know, I'm done.
- 1:43:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:43:25SPEAKER_03: No more art in the world, period.
- 1:43:28SPEAKER_00: Except for your Grease 2.
- 1:43:30SPEAKER_00: Except for Grease Till.
- 1:43:32SPEAKER_00: Except for your Grease 2 like uh remake thing that you're gonna do.
- 1:43:35SPEAKER_03: And that will be zippin' gor of high art.
- 1:43:40SPEAKER_03: Highbrow.
- 1:43:41SPEAKER_03: I'll do I will I would love to make a sketch so niche that's literally just like for like the ten other kids that watched Grease Teal.
- 1:43:49SPEAKER_00: I mean, I think you should do it.
- 1:43:50SPEAKER_00: Like while you're while we're like doing whatever this is.
- 1:43:55SPEAKER_03: They're like divorced, like I'm just picturing it where it's like he has like a beer belly and they're like miserable because they never actually liked each other as people, and they have like five kids, got married straight out of high school, and now he's like cheating on her with like uh 18-year-old.
- 1:44:11SPEAKER_03: That's like that doesn't sound like a funny sketch as much as the depressing reality.
- 1:44:15SPEAKER_03: Like, yeah, I gotta punch it up a bit.
- 1:44:18SPEAKER_00: That's just the first draft of it.
- 1:44:20SPEAKER_03: That's just I'm just spitballing here.
- 1:44:22SPEAKER_03: I'm just throwing some things out, you know, we can cross them off, but we're just getting ideas.
- 1:44:27SPEAKER_00: You get the draft of it down, then you add things into it.
- 1:44:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I punch it up.
- 1:44:31SPEAKER_03: I'm just getting the writer's room together, just trying to get the boys.
- 1:44:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:44:36SPEAKER_03: That's so funny though.
- 1:44:37SPEAKER_03: I love that where it's just like as soon as they actually start dating, it's gonna be like, wait, so you changed yourself like completely to be with me?
- 1:44:44SPEAKER_03: Because he's really at the disadvantage just immediately in that relationship.
- 1:44:48SPEAKER_00: I mean, you're Yeah, because he's gonna go back to him like being himself again.
- 1:44:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but he's like, but now I'm a cool writer.
- 1:44:55SPEAKER_03: And it's like, was she supposed to learn the lesson that she actually wanted somebody who's like smart?
- 1:45:00SPEAKER_03: Because I don't think that was the lesson either.
- 1:45:04SPEAKER_03: I don't think she had a lesson.
- 1:45:06SPEAKER_03: There's no yeah, that's another good sign of a good movie.
- 1:45:09SPEAKER_03: No morals, no values, no lessons.
- 1:45:13SPEAKER_03: That's how every movie should be.
- 1:45:15SPEAKER_03: Every movie.
- 1:45:16SPEAKER_00: Every movie.
- 1:45:18SPEAKER_00: Well, this has been great.
- 1:45:20SPEAKER_00: Um we're gonna end it there.
- 1:45:23SPEAKER_00: Um before I don't end it though, uh, have you got anything you want to plug at the moment uh and how can we find you online and everything?
- 1:45:30SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 1:45:31SPEAKER_03: Um I so I just had this like Comedy Central clip come out in April, um, and I did my song 100 tampons on there.
- 1:45:40SPEAKER_03: So then I also have an EP album of the same name called 100 tampons, which everyone can stream on Spotify and Title and Apple and everything like that.
- 1:45:52SPEAKER_03: I just got an alert, an email alert that it's on Napster.
- 1:45:55SPEAKER_03: So if anyone is still using Napster, you can get my I didn't even know it still existed.
- 1:45:58SPEAKER_00: Like I guess it's someone illegally uploaded it to Napster.
- 1:46:02SPEAKER_03: I'm like, thank you.
- 1:46:04SPEAKER_03: Um so yeah, so download my album and online.
- 1:46:09SPEAKER_03: Um I'm just Marsha Belsky on Twitter, just my first and last name.
- 1:46:14SPEAKER_03: So and sometimes I'm funny and sometimes I'm just very political and angry.
- 1:46:17SPEAKER_03: So kind of a mixture of just like everyone at the moment.
- 1:46:20SPEAKER_03: That's just how it is now.
- 1:46:21SPEAKER_00: You know, just every comedian is turned that way.
- 1:46:24SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 1:46:25SPEAKER_03: Like, because some shit is just like, you know, it's not joke time, like, but then it'll be funny because I I got a bunch of followers after the Communist Central thing, and I was like, I am not tweeting funny shit right now.
- 1:46:35SPEAKER_03: So hopefully you all hang on there, like, you know.
- 1:46:39SPEAKER_00: Didn't that go viral on TikTok as well?
- 1:46:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it went crazy viral on TikTok.
- 1:46:43SPEAKER_03: That's how and I didn't even put a video up.
- 1:46:45SPEAKER_03: Like it was people doing um like act outs and then a couple people drew like on live video over it.
- 1:46:52SPEAKER_03: That was the coolest fucking thing ever.
- 1:46:55SPEAKER_03: And then that's what got my Spotify streams like way up because I uploaded on Spotify and had like a hundred listens, and then people started doing it on TikTok, and it got it like really shot it up.
- 1:47:06SPEAKER_03: So that was that was awesome.
- 1:47:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:47:08SPEAKER_03: So watch those videos too.
- 1:47:10SPEAKER_03: If you search the I think it's if you search the hashtag either Marshabelsky or 100 tampons, you'll see all those videos.
- 1:47:15SPEAKER_03: And this guy also did it, he told a story while my song was playing about how NASA also um like had these spacesuits where you had to have like a condom like um thing fit over like your dick, and it had to fit exactly or else it's like dangerous because you're in space.
- 1:47:35SPEAKER_03: And so um they gave it to the side of the side.
- 1:47:37SPEAKER_03: Oh, I wonder where this is going.
- 1:47:39SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 1:47:39SPEAKER_03: So they gave the sizing options of small, medium, and large, and so all of the men chose large, and that was gonna be like a big problem, and so then they like changed it, and they kind of did it tongue in cheek, but they changed the three sizes to like large, humongous, and giant, or like something like that.
- 1:47:58SPEAKER_03: So then they all just actually chose the proper size or whatever, yeah.
- 1:48:02SPEAKER_03: So that was really funny too.
- 1:48:03SPEAKER_03: That was that that was good.
- 1:48:05SPEAKER_00: I'll I'll just look that up as well.
- 1:48:06SPEAKER_03: I want to see that everyone looked that up, but yeah, and and download my album, and thank you for having me, allowing me to talk to you.
- 1:48:12SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for coming on.
- 1:48:13SPEAKER_03: One of the best movies that's ever been created.
- 1:48:15SPEAKER_03: I think everyone knows in tier three.
- 1:48:17SPEAKER_00: Everyone needs to watch, go and watch it and go and listen to go and listen to Marcha's stuff on whatever app you're using right now to listen to this.
- 1:48:24SPEAKER_00: You can probably find out the same thing.
- 1:48:26SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 1:48:27SPEAKER_03: Uh and I hope you guys don't go into tier two soon.
- 1:48:31SPEAKER_03: So stay safe.
- 1:48:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:48:33SPEAKER_00: Um people are already in tier two, some people are in tier three, but who knows what's gonna happen.
- 1:48:37SPEAKER_03: Who knows, yeah.
- 1:48:39SPEAKER_03: But stay safe, yeah.
- 1:48:40SPEAKER_03: It was nice to talk to you.
- 1:48:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, nice to talk to you too.
- 1:48:42SPEAKER_00: I'll speak to you soon.
- 1:48:43SPEAKER_03: Bye.
