- 1:49Speaker 1: O A and T. I am joined. No, I got
- 1:53Speaker 1: nothing funny here, witty or or or anything. I'm joining
- 1:56Speaker 1: by Greg thomp Satt. We're both pretty miserable right now
- 1:58Speaker 1: because it's late on a Sun and that game sucked.
- 2:01Speaker 1: But we're going to talk about Bill's Bears preseason. We two, Greg,
- 2:04Speaker 1: How you feeling, how's it going, What's up.
- 2:07Speaker 4: At no point in the ten years I've been associated
- 2:10Speaker 4: with Cover One have I been more upset with myself than.
- 2:15Speaker 2: I offered to take part in the show than I was.
- 2:20Speaker 4: Two drives into this game. I joked about it and
- 2:24Speaker 4: they're like immediately I was like.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Oh, they don't care. Just immediately into the game, I
- 2:30Speaker 2: was like, oh, oh no.
- 2:35Speaker 4: It was you know, I guess there are some takeaways
- 2:41Speaker 4: that we'll get to, but this was just immediate regret.
- 2:50Speaker 2: I immediately regret this decision.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Yeah that was.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Oh that game sucked like the time Buffalo drafted Boogie
- 2:58Speaker 1: Bashing over Creed Humphrey. These are the comments I expect,
- 3:01Speaker 1: and I like, yeah, that it was. I told you offline.
- 3:04Speaker 1: I personally played myself for this because I I thought
- 3:07Speaker 1: this game.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Was on Saturday night and not a Sunday night.
- 3:11Speaker 1: So coming in like once I realized that like midweek,
- 3:13Speaker 1: I was like, oh, man, like that sucks because it
- 3:15Speaker 1: can be laid on it sun.
- 3:16Speaker 3: I was like, yeah, it'll be fine.
- 3:17Speaker 1: And then as I got like closer, I said it
- 3:19Speaker 1: like into myself in my head, I was like, the
- 3:20Speaker 1: only way it'll be worse is that the Bills just
- 3:22Speaker 1: got like blown out and just got completely shellacked.
- 3:24Speaker 3: And that is exactly what happened.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Yeah, it was thanks to Aaron Aaron at the Super
- 3:30Speaker 1: Jet Sympathy tip.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Man, it was just so we a little peek behind
- 3:36Speaker 1: the curtain. Greg and I were gonna, we're it's so
- 3:41Speaker 1: foolish to say a hindsight. We're gonna just go position
- 3:43Speaker 1: by position and talk through like risers follers, like this
- 3:47Speaker 1: guy look good, like, oh, do you think he made
- 3:48Speaker 1: a push for the roster? And not even just because
- 3:52Speaker 1: the game was bad. I genuinely oh, and I gotta watch.
- 3:57Speaker 3: The tape on it. I but forget if that for now.
- 4:00Speaker 1: It's table that I genuinely like, I felt like nothing
- 4:04Speaker 1: happened while also horrible things were happening. It was very
- 4:07Speaker 1: I just found myself just like watching it and almost
- 4:11Speaker 1: I don't know if.
- 4:11Speaker 3: I like, I.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Just my eyes glazed over, but I was just like
- 4:16Speaker 1: I felt like I was just there experiencing this game
- 4:19Speaker 1: or like having it happened to me and nothing was
- 4:22Speaker 1: registering because it was just so.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Bad or lacks. I don't know if it was the
- 4:28Speaker 3: lack of like you mentioned, like maybe they don't.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Care, or just because of how much the Bears are
- 4:31Speaker 1: really putting boots to ass in this game. But I
- 4:35Speaker 1: just found myself very much like very just from yeah,
- 4:40Speaker 1: about maybe five six minutes in and that I just
- 4:42Speaker 1: didn't anticipate that and it hit me hard.
- 4:45Speaker 4: Yeah, And I think obviously we know McDermott has shared
- 4:50Speaker 4: that for our teams specifically, we don't game plan, they
- 4:54Speaker 4: don't go in, they're not going to show anything, and
- 4:58Speaker 4: it's pre early individual valuation, like they're testing effort, they're
- 5:03Speaker 4: testing and checking for you know, individual performance, and that's.
- 5:10Speaker 2: What I look for as well.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Like, hey, I matter of fact, I am much better
- 5:17Speaker 4: about my watching habits in the preseason the way that
- 5:23Speaker 4: I rewatch the game where in real time, like I'm
- 5:28Speaker 4: one hundred percent like ninety nine percent of fans where
- 5:31Speaker 4: I just watch the ball and I'm watching the outcomes
- 5:34Speaker 4: of the play. And in preseason, I don't like I watch,
- 5:38Speaker 4: like I pick out a couple of players and guy
- 5:40Speaker 4: who's in on this snap that I care about, and
- 5:42Speaker 4: I watch some of those guys and I'll just watch
- 5:44Speaker 4: those players on the snap. And in preseason, I'll rewind
- 5:49Speaker 4: more often and then catch up during commercials because I
- 5:51Speaker 4: don't care. I'm not worried about getting some like urgent
- 5:54Speaker 4: alert text or something like that that's going to ruin
- 5:56Speaker 4: the game for me. So like that's always been my
- 5:59Speaker 4: habit in the preseason, like I just I'll watch along
- 6:02Speaker 4: and I don't care if I don't finish exactly in
- 6:04Speaker 4: time or.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Whatever it may be.
- 6:07Speaker 4: And like even in this game, that's what my plan
- 6:11Speaker 4: was again, same idea, and it you know, we'll talk
- 6:14Speaker 4: about a couple like there were some flashes. It wasn't
- 6:17Speaker 4: literally zero. There's not a lot, but it wasn't literally zero.
- 6:20Speaker 4: Even the guys that flash. And I think you'll see
- 6:23Speaker 4: the names whatever it maybe Shaver's Hancock, Ian Walker, Michael Hoy,
- 6:28Speaker 4: Like there'll be a handful of guys like, oh cool,
- 6:31Speaker 4: that was a nice legitimately nice play. Maybe besides hoy
- 6:35Speaker 4: I don't. I don't specifically remember anything negative that Hoyt did.
- 6:40Speaker 4: All the rest of those guys, there were also multiple
- 6:43Speaker 4: plays where I was like, well, that's not good, that's
- 6:46Speaker 4: not It was also not great, So you know, again,
- 6:53Speaker 4: I think the important part is I don't I don't
- 6:56Speaker 4: think we had any serious injuries. Jordan Hancock is the
- 6:59Speaker 4: only one that obviously we need to see with the shoulder.
- 7:02Speaker 4: Hopefully that was just precautionary and a normal stinger and
- 7:05Speaker 4: regular game he probably would have been available to go
- 7:07Speaker 4: back in uh pending that and assuming that wasn't something
- 7:11Speaker 4: freakishly unlucky or stupid.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Because I like Jordan Hancock.
- 7:16Speaker 4: I'm excited about his his potential and you know, very
- 7:20Speaker 4: obvious roster spot, but potential role beyond there. The biggest
- 7:25Speaker 4: takeaway was nobody got hurt, nothing dumb happened, and you
- 7:28Speaker 4: can just you know, uh flush this game and move
- 7:32Speaker 4: on and just use the men in black eraser PEP
- 7:35Speaker 4: and move on and never have to think about this
- 7:37Speaker 4: game ever ever again. And I planned to do that
- 7:41Speaker 4: the moment we stopped recording here.
- 7:43Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm gonna forget about it end. I would realize
- 7:45Speaker 3: at some point tomorrow when I have to go.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Back and watch, you can forget Wednesday.
- 7:51Speaker 3: Flush it.
- 7:52Speaker 1: You know, it's funny, you know you mentioning kind of
- 7:55Speaker 1: like how you consume the game preseason versus regular season.
- 7:58Speaker 1: It's it makes me more upset because it like, it
- 8:02Speaker 1: takes a lot for me to tap out of a game,
- 8:05Speaker 1: because I value like not even just the Bills, but
- 8:08Speaker 1: for football in general, the scheme of it, Like the
- 8:11Speaker 1: Ravens kicking the hell out of the Bills last year.
- 8:14Speaker 3: The Ravens were doing a lot of cool stuff in
- 8:15Speaker 3: that game.
- 8:16Speaker 1: So I was still in the fourth quarter, like they're
- 8:18Speaker 1: doing some good stuff and I could find something to enjoy.
- 8:20Speaker 1: And preseason, you know this, I go super heavy into
- 8:24Speaker 1: college football in the draft, So there could be some
- 8:26Speaker 1: seventh round guy who's a fifth stringer and I'm locked
- 8:28Speaker 1: into the fourth quarter for the Bills or for anybody.
- 8:31Speaker 3: Being like, well, I want to see this guy.
- 8:33Speaker 1: It takes a lot for me to tap out of
- 8:35Speaker 1: a game, especially a Bills game. And I was tapped
- 8:38Speaker 1: out like midway through the second quarter. I was just like,
- 8:42Speaker 1: I don't want to do this anymore, Like this is
- 8:43Speaker 1: like give the ball to Frank or seventy five times,
- 8:46Speaker 1: let's bleed the clock and go home, Like I don't
- 8:49Speaker 1: I think the.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Last moment I don't remember.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Maybe it was in the second quarter, Shavers got opened
- 8:55Speaker 1: when the bills were going left or right and he
- 8:57Speaker 1: beat the corner at the bottom of the screen and
- 8:59Speaker 1: Mike White missed him, and that was the last time
- 9:01Speaker 1: in the game. I was like, oh, and from then on,
- 9:03Speaker 1: I had no I had nothing emotional tied to that
- 9:06Speaker 1: game after that.
- 9:08Speaker 2: So I had a moment that I'm not proud of.
- 9:12Speaker 4: And it was in the fourth quarter and one of
- 9:17Speaker 4: the up Bear's guy got hurt and in the moment,
- 9:19Speaker 4: you didn't know how serious it was. And the immediate
- 9:23Speaker 4: flash in my mind was, oh my god, maybe they'll
- 9:25Speaker 4: do what the Lions and the Falcons did. And I
- 9:29Speaker 4: swear to God, like I swear like I'm not proud
- 9:31Speaker 4: of the fact that that was My immediate thought was,
- 9:35Speaker 4: Oh my god, maybe they'll just a lot of clock
- 9:36Speaker 4: run out and end this. That was just my immediate,
- 9:40Speaker 4: like intrusive thought. Dn't to the moment, was like, oh
- 9:45Speaker 4: my god, maybe they'll just let the clock run out
- 9:46Speaker 4: and this will be over.
- 9:48Speaker 3: That's fair.
- 9:49Speaker 1: That's how mad it was, that's how bad. Oh we
- 9:51Speaker 1: got another super chat. Let me pull this everything of
- 9:54Speaker 1: Reffer being here and we can enjoy.
- 9:57Speaker 2: Bless you with the chet.
- 9:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:00Speaker 1: My try at a positive spin is talk about the
- 10:03Speaker 1: perfect wake up call for McDermott to rile with the
- 10:05Speaker 1: team without having the consequences of a regular game.
- 10:07Speaker 3: I actually think it's a very fair thought.
- 10:09Speaker 4: Yes, I literally had the exact same thought. I so
- 10:14Speaker 4: this is I think it's a brilliant fun because obviously
- 10:17Speaker 4: I had it, So it's obviously brilliant.
- 10:20Speaker 2: I swear to God.
- 10:21Speaker 4: As a watching I was like, well, this is gonna
- 10:25Speaker 4: suck to watch this game with McDermott.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Uh.
- 10:28Speaker 4: He is going to just lambase the crap out of
- 10:32Speaker 4: these guys watching this.
- 10:34Speaker 2: And I don't think that there was.
- 10:38Speaker 4: I want to I want to differentiate between poor play
- 10:43Speaker 4: and levels that were inequal for healthy portions of this
- 10:48Speaker 4: with starters for one team in backups for another.
- 10:52Speaker 2: I don't want to say Ben Johnson game planned.
- 10:55Speaker 4: He didn't game plan for the Bills, Like, that's not
- 10:57Speaker 4: I don't think that's the case. I think he showed
- 11:00Speaker 4: a little bit more. I think this was more of
- 11:02Speaker 4: a tune up of his style and.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Play call in.
- 11:07Speaker 4: I don't think we called much of anything of what
- 11:11Speaker 4: we're going to be doing, So I think there are
- 11:12Speaker 4: some things there where you know, there are reasons. So
- 11:16Speaker 4: I'm not going to say that there was a lack
- 11:18Speaker 4: of effort. I don't think that's going to be What
- 11:20Speaker 4: comes up is the guys weren't trying on the field
- 11:23Speaker 4: because those guys are trying to make roster or a role.
- 11:28Speaker 4: But I think there's going to be a lot of
- 11:31Speaker 4: Jordan Hancock. Let's use him as the initial stock up
- 11:34Speaker 4: stock down like he had into some nice flashes, really
- 11:37Speaker 4: nice run run Blitz came in, made a nice tackle
- 11:40Speaker 4: for a loss, had a couple other flashes where you
- 11:42Speaker 4: see him moving quickly using the closing speed. Also you know,
- 11:47Speaker 4: obviously stuck out because Greg Wilson highlighted it like seven
- 11:50Speaker 4: times because of the receipt of the blocking receiver for there,
- 11:53Speaker 4: but had multiple plays where he just got plowed.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Yeah, the one where they bring him in motion and then
- 12:00Speaker 1: they run just crushes him and I was like, oh,
- 12:02Speaker 1: that it's gonna be that kind of night.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, I think Dean Walker was another one.
- 12:09Speaker 4: It was really funny because at the if anybody goes
- 12:12Speaker 4: back and looks at the time stamps, you'll see like
- 12:14Speaker 4: a group of people get excited about Dan Walker because
- 12:17Speaker 4: he had a really nice play. You know Eric had
- 12:20Speaker 4: talked about I think he was. He had a wide
- 12:22Speaker 4: lignement kind of looped inside. You get that momentum going
- 12:25Speaker 4: with that enormous body he and he ends up taking
- 12:29Speaker 4: like the guard and the chipping running back and kind
- 12:32Speaker 4: of like bowling through both of that guard balls down.
- 12:36Speaker 3: They just length puts that length of the huge paw.
- 12:38Speaker 4: Out there causes what initially live looked like the fumble
- 12:43Speaker 4: that doing Carter took Pat for a touchdown, Like that
- 12:45Speaker 4: was his play. If you go back and look at
- 12:47Speaker 4: the time stamps, Like thirty seconds before that, Anthony had
- 12:50Speaker 4: a tweet about, oh, is it not good if our
- 12:54Speaker 4: interior d line's getting blown off the ball and neither.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Of our edges are setting the edge.
- 13:00Speaker 4: And it's because you know, without that play, him and
- 13:05Speaker 4: Sanders didn't play gray Like again, I saw a couple
- 13:08Speaker 4: flashes from TG Sanders where he was disruptive and made
- 13:11Speaker 4: some plays and neither of them are expected to be
- 13:15Speaker 4: you know that those were like seventy five maybe eighty
- 13:18Speaker 4: percent snap guys. So they played a ton or like long,
- 13:21Speaker 4: long stretches of this game, and neither of them are
- 13:24Speaker 4: expected to be like stout run defenders for second down
- 13:29Speaker 4: guys that are doing that. They're going to be contributing
- 13:32Speaker 4: pass rush guys who play, and then we'll see what
- 13:34Speaker 4: they develop into later in their career. So like that's
- 13:38Speaker 4: not even a concern for me that they weren't great
- 13:40Speaker 4: in that role tonight. But they weren't. They were not
- 13:42Speaker 4: great in that role. So even like the flashes that did,
- 13:45Speaker 4: both Dean Walker and TJ. Sanders had some flashes, they
- 13:48Speaker 4: also had some pretty horrendous plays. I thank god for
- 13:51Speaker 4: Lanna Jackson that he finally had a couple decent plays
- 13:54Speaker 4: after like only negative plays in the first game, and
- 13:57Speaker 4: even him some stuff where and keep the edge. Some
- 14:01Speaker 4: weird diving plays were you know, giving up longer yardage,
- 14:05Speaker 4: not that whole guy's making a seut tackle. So just
- 14:09Speaker 4: in general, so many like that where even the guys
- 14:12Speaker 4: who had flashes, there was still they had plenty of negatives.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Yeah, Sanders is a good one I think to start
- 14:19Speaker 1: with because it dives into we're gonna get to safety
- 14:22Speaker 1: after I know that's a big one already in the
- 14:24Speaker 1: comments where I was I going to talk about safety,
- 14:26Speaker 1: and again, this is going to be more of a
- 14:27Speaker 1: setup going position by position. We have several major takeaways
- 14:30Speaker 1: we're going to talk about that. I think we'll kind
- 14:31Speaker 1: of just mesh this into the run defense piece. I
- 14:34Speaker 1: want to I want to make sure I preface this
- 14:38Speaker 1: by saying what I've been saying all off season, because
- 14:41Speaker 1: I haven't talked about it so much because my biggest
- 14:43Speaker 1: concern for the Bills going into this year was, you know,
- 14:47Speaker 1: their ability to not get blown off the ball on
- 14:49Speaker 1: the interior.
- 14:50Speaker 2: I thought it was a.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Concern last year that was kind of hidden because game
- 14:54Speaker 1: script was largely in the bills favor teams got away
- 14:57Speaker 1: from the run. If teams didn't get away from the run,
- 15:00Speaker 1: the way the Bills stopped the run is they would
- 15:02Speaker 1: just gap out what they did against the Lions, where hey,
- 15:04Speaker 1: we're gonna put eight or nine guys in the box,
- 15:06Speaker 1: you're not gonna run the ball. We're gonna try and
- 15:08Speaker 1: stop you enough with that, and then we're gonna try
- 15:10Speaker 1: and go up twenty one to three and you're not
- 15:11Speaker 1: gonna be able to run the ball.
- 15:12Speaker 3: Like that's that's their best run defense.
- 15:15Speaker 1: If it was purely like guy and a guy had
- 15:17Speaker 1: on a hat or lighter neutral boxes, they were not
- 15:19Speaker 1: in good shape. That's part of the reason why I
- 15:22Speaker 1: wanted Tyler Williams, while I was even willing to settle for,
- 15:25Speaker 1: you know, for Collins from Texas, even though he offers
- 15:27Speaker 1: nothing as a rusher. But I don't think we're gonna
- 15:31Speaker 1: get an answer on that run defense piece even early
- 15:35Speaker 1: in the regular season. We got to see this team
- 15:36Speaker 1: fill out. We have to see Larryogan, Joey come back,
- 15:38Speaker 1: Michael Hoy, all of that. So I knew we weren't
- 15:41Speaker 1: gonna get an answer until deep into the regular season.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Not deep, but good, a good chunk into the regular season.
- 15:46Speaker 1: You need proper sample size. No, Baltimore doesn't count because
- 15:49Speaker 1: it's Week one, but also they're a unicorn.
- 15:51Speaker 3: They run all over everyone. Cool, whatever, But tonight still
- 15:53Speaker 3: didn't make me feel good.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Like my concerns to your point, were, they're like, what
- 15:59Speaker 1: I'm afraid of with TJ. Sanders, for example, is kind
- 16:03Speaker 1: of what we saw tonight. He had off the top
- 16:05Speaker 1: of my head, two or three really good pressures where
- 16:09Speaker 1: he beat his man similar to what we saw last
- 16:11Speaker 1: week hand Uson's penetration. He's in there, good pass rush stuff,
- 16:16Speaker 1: but he got knocked around on the line of scrimmage, vertically, horizontally.
- 16:23Speaker 1: He was getting pushed around, and that that's my biggest concern.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Now again, if you're still sweet as a rusher, that
- 16:30Speaker 1: you're still offering something. And I still think that's an
- 16:32Speaker 1: improvement versus last year because Austin Johnson and Dwayne Carter
- 16:36Speaker 1: didn't give you either of those things. They gave you
- 16:38Speaker 1: pretty much a net negative for both. So Sanders can
- 16:41Speaker 1: just be a plus rusher. That's still a positive. But
- 16:44Speaker 1: him getting pushed around.
- 16:45Speaker 3: A bit in the run was concerning for me. Dion Walker,
- 16:48Speaker 3: I kind of expect.
- 16:50Speaker 1: It just because he's I know a lot of people
- 16:52Speaker 1: talked about the back issue.
- 16:53Speaker 3: The man is massive.
- 16:55Speaker 1: He's never gonna be the low man, and low man wins.
- 16:57Speaker 1: It's gonna be tough for him to anchor down and
- 17:00Speaker 1: be stout and drop the knigh verse double teams. And
- 17:03Speaker 1: his game is penetration based. It is more of a rusher.
- 17:07Speaker 1: He's at best, like you alluded to with Eric's sweet
- 17:11Speaker 1: and what we've talked about in the film room broken down.
- 17:12Speaker 1: He's arguably at his best the wider he gets on
- 17:16Speaker 1: the defensive line, like yeah, you put him by like
- 17:19Speaker 1: like a four eye on the inside shoulder of an
- 17:20Speaker 1: offensive tackle.
- 17:21Speaker 3: That's where he's best.
- 17:23Speaker 1: But he's into the defensive tackle role here and then,
- 17:25Speaker 1: like Ed Oliver is undersized. I don't want him battling
- 17:28Speaker 1: double teams. The only guy who really can do that
- 17:30Speaker 1: is Daikwon, and he's a little long in the tooth
- 17:33Speaker 1: of miles on the tires. So I say all that
- 17:36Speaker 1: to say, it's preseason. This isn't the starters. Pump the brakes.
- 17:40Speaker 1: We're still not gonna know until the regular season. But
- 17:42Speaker 1: still I did not like what I saw because even
- 17:45Speaker 1: though it was the backups, like you said, TJ Sanders
- 17:48Speaker 1: to start the year with Ogin Jobe suspended, TJ Sanders
- 17:52Speaker 1: is defensive tackle three. When Ogu Jobe comes back, he's
- 17:55Speaker 1: probably defensive tackle four. Gonna see a heavy chunk of snaps.
- 17:59Speaker 1: Walker probably gets rotated in at some point unless Dwayne
- 18:01Speaker 1: Carter holds them off, but I don't see that happening.
- 18:04Speaker 1: It was concerning on the interior, and then you mix
- 18:07Speaker 1: it with a couple of points that you mentioned as well,
- 18:09Speaker 1: like yeah, guys on the edge getting sucked in, giving
- 18:11Speaker 1: up you know, contained or not that's in the edge,
- 18:14Speaker 1: and being forced players and running backs getting outside.
- 18:16Speaker 2: It was.
- 18:17Speaker 3: It was ugly up front and in the spine from
- 18:19Speaker 3: a run defense standpoint.
- 18:21Speaker 4: Yeah, and we know we've built kind of that old
- 18:25Speaker 4: school Colts defense. They used to be like that with
- 18:28Speaker 4: the Peyton Manning defense when you had Fremy and Robert
- 18:30Speaker 4: Mathis and Bob Sanders.
- 18:32Speaker 2: Get up on you.
- 18:33Speaker 3: So that pass.
- 18:35Speaker 2: It was just saying like yeah in everyone.
- 18:37Speaker 4: Every once in a while in those seasons, they'd get
- 18:39Speaker 4: one of those you know, negative game script games, and
- 18:43Speaker 4: they would just get pounded and they would give up
- 18:45Speaker 4: twohundred fifty yards rushing. Everybody ask all the questions like yeah,
- 18:48Speaker 4: but they're gonna have the positive game script in like
- 18:52Speaker 4: thirteen of their games, So like, h you know, it's.
- 18:54Speaker 3: Not bad more than balances out.
- 18:57Speaker 4: Yeah, and you know we're two like we're gonna we
- 19:02Speaker 4: are gonna boat race way more teams then are gonna
- 19:05Speaker 4: shove the ball down our throats.
- 19:07Speaker 2: But I got bad news for people. It's gonna happen
- 19:09Speaker 2: a time or two.
- 19:10Speaker 4: This year, the A team or two is gonna get
- 19:12Speaker 4: the wrong balance, We're gonna get the wrong drop, we're
- 19:15Speaker 4: gonna get the bad fumble luck, we're gonna get the
- 19:17Speaker 4: couple things that don't go our way. And what's going
- 19:21Speaker 4: to happen is instead of it last year it was
- 19:24Speaker 4: the Cardinals, it was the Titans. It was a couple
- 19:26Speaker 4: of those games where we had some weird moments of like,
- 19:29Speaker 4: how are we down double digits to these like ify teams.
- 19:32Speaker 4: It's going to be like the Ravens game where it's
- 19:36Speaker 4: gonna be like, oh crap.
- 19:37Speaker 2: This is not the right team to give that game
- 19:39Speaker 2: script too. And if you know, if it had happened.
- 19:42Speaker 4: To us against the healthy Niners or the you know,
- 19:48Speaker 4: the Lions, if it went the other way around, that
- 19:50Speaker 4: was a team that absolutely would have spammed us and
- 19:53Speaker 4: just run and run and run with no concern of
- 19:56Speaker 4: just continuing to run at us. So you know, again,
- 20:00Speaker 4: it's fine, we're gonna be fined like that. All that's
- 20:02Speaker 4: gonna work. And we don't have the like, you know,
- 20:07Speaker 4: the difference maker that Josh is on offense. It's not
- 20:10Speaker 4: like that, but there are something like Gregor Russo legitimately
- 20:14Speaker 4: is the best run defending defensive end in the league.
- 20:18Speaker 4: One of whatever you want to you know, talk about.
- 20:21Speaker 4: You know, Treel Bernard is very good at diagnosing what's
- 20:24Speaker 4: going on. Daejon Jones, like you said, he can't play
- 20:28Speaker 4: to the level he did before, but it's a good player.
- 20:31Speaker 4: Ed Oliver is actually for his size, does a decent job.
- 20:34Speaker 4: He's just you know, he's never gonna hold up to
- 20:37Speaker 4: a double team in that way because he is undersized.
- 20:40Speaker 4: So some of those different Joey Bosa is actually a sneaky,
- 20:43Speaker 4: very good run defender. So there are things like that
- 20:46Speaker 4: where when the real guys are in there, it's just individually,
- 20:51Speaker 4: some of those players like Gregor Russo, I don't want
- 20:53Speaker 4: to say never almost never loses the edge like he
- 20:57Speaker 4: he maintains contained as well as any you know, defensive
- 21:00Speaker 4: end in the entire league. Those make a huge, huge difference.
- 21:04Speaker 4: He Bosa and Greg Russo are going to be able
- 21:06Speaker 4: to funnel things back in Milano and Bernard can make
- 21:09Speaker 4: the tackles like hey, that that's going to function better
- 21:13Speaker 4: than it does now. But it is never going to
- 21:16Speaker 4: be our strength. It is not our foot like we
- 21:18Speaker 4: have not built that team, and you don't know why.
- 21:20Speaker 2: I know that we haven't built that team.
- 21:22Speaker 4: Brenda bean Is refused to add a legitimate one tech
- 21:26Speaker 4: regardless of my constant begging and pleading, and that I
- 21:31Speaker 4: had to settle for, like, you know, legitimately a massive human,
- 21:35Speaker 4: but not even the kind that I was asking for.
- 21:37Speaker 4: When I say large human over and over and over again,
- 21:39Speaker 4: it's not even the kind that I was really wanting.
- 21:43Speaker 4: I won't go on the rant of the just furious anger.
- 21:47Speaker 4: I had watching Derek Harmon look awesome for the Steelers, and.
- 21:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I was watching.
- 21:52Speaker 1: I was watching Tyler Williams then for Detroit last week,
- 21:55Speaker 1: and I was and then apparent with that rumor of
- 21:57Speaker 1: like the Bills told Tylee he was going to be
- 21:59Speaker 1: their guy if he was there round one, and I
- 22:01Speaker 1: was like, oh, they were so close to maybe getting that.
- 22:04Speaker 2: That would have been so nice, you know. So all
- 22:07Speaker 2: that said, I think.
- 22:10Speaker 4: The guys that had their poor moments today before we
- 22:13Speaker 4: get into the safeties, I had one more in that area.
- 22:16Speaker 2: I think tonight was a.
- 22:17Speaker 4: Nice, healthy wake up call for Bill's mafia on what
- 22:21Speaker 4: Joe Andrieson is and what he is not. I am
- 22:26Speaker 4: excited about him being a absolute roster Locke. I'm excited
- 22:30Speaker 4: for him being a special teams Maven. I am excited
- 22:34Speaker 4: about him honestly, maybe pushing Dorian Williams for like the
- 22:39Speaker 4: short yardage goal line third linebacker spot of just downhill
- 22:45Speaker 4: coming forward, Like I'm okay, if that's even a possibility.
- 22:48Speaker 4: I don't think he is. I think Dorian still the
- 22:50Speaker 4: third guy. But fans need to understand, regardless of about
- 22:54Speaker 4: awesome the story is and how fun Buffalo Joe and
- 22:58Speaker 4: the moments on on Hard Knocks are, if Joe Andriesen
- 23:04Speaker 4: played real snaps for those right now, I'm not saying never.
- 23:07Speaker 4: Maybe he can develop in this area right now, every
- 23:11Speaker 4: veteran savvy quarterback.
- 23:13Speaker 2: It would be an immediate.
- 23:15Speaker 4: Focus and red flag on him and they would go
- 23:19Speaker 4: after him over and over and over and over until
- 23:24Speaker 4: the Bills were forced to remove him from the game.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Like what teams did to Dorian Williams when he went
- 23:28Speaker 1: in and his rookie year to replace that they just
- 23:30Speaker 1: got the Giants and the Patriots just attacked him over
- 23:33Speaker 1: and it was like, all right, crap.
- 23:35Speaker 4: Yeah that you know. And again, that is not a
- 23:39Speaker 4: that is just an objective evaluation of where he is
- 23:45Speaker 4: in his very early, already amazingly overachieving career, Like the
- 23:50Speaker 4: man has made an NFL roster now two years in
- 23:53Speaker 4: a row as not only an undrafted free agent, like
- 23:57Speaker 4: a non combine invite, non non first wave. He wasn't
- 24:03Speaker 4: even a priority UDFA, he was a rookie, mini camp
- 24:07Speaker 4: walk on tryout to surpass all of that, he's already
- 24:10Speaker 4: exceeded every expectation.
- 24:12Speaker 2: Awesome story, super great.
- 24:14Speaker 1: Uh.
- 24:14Speaker 4: He and I won the same wrestling award in high school.
- 24:17Speaker 4: Like I have a great affinity for the men. We're
- 24:20Speaker 4: both Elio da Paolo wrestling scholarship winners.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Trophies right here, I can yeah, like I have a.
- 24:30Speaker 4: Great affinity for it, anyone who is getting ahead of
- 24:34Speaker 4: themselves of like, oh man, we got to find a
- 24:36Speaker 4: way to get him on the field. No we don't, No,
- 24:39Speaker 4: we do not take a breath. It can be an
- 24:41Speaker 4: awesome story and no need for that.
- 24:46Speaker 1: It lined up so unfortunately well with so in the
- 24:50Speaker 1: film room this week, Eric and I showed several of
- 24:54Speaker 1: his pieces in coverage from the first game against the Giants.
- 24:57Speaker 1: But how that lined up with a bunch of the
- 24:59Speaker 1: coach he got in that episode of Hard Knocks where
- 25:02Speaker 1: they were talking about him in coverage and getting to
- 25:04Speaker 1: his landmark and guys getting behind him, and we showed
- 25:07Speaker 1: that on tape, and that was a concern with him
- 25:09Speaker 1: last year. For as much as he bawled out in
- 25:11Speaker 1: that game against the Steelers, think of it. If you're
- 25:13Speaker 1: going back and thinking, yeah, he looked great against the Steelers.
- 25:15Speaker 1: What was he doing in that Steelers game? Everything was
- 25:17Speaker 1: in and around the line of scrimmage and it was
- 25:19Speaker 1: run defense base. He was making tackles left and right,
- 25:21Speaker 1: he was shooting gaps, he was triggering. He's good in
- 25:24Speaker 1: that regard, like his processing and his trigger and his
- 25:27Speaker 1: finishing in and around the line of scrimmage and going
- 25:29Speaker 1: forward is good. He takes on blocks, well, he's fine.
- 25:33Speaker 1: You start to get him in coverage and like tonight showed,
- 25:36Speaker 1: he struggles a bit and there was some I started
- 25:38Speaker 1: to feel bad for him at one point because as
- 25:42Speaker 1: the game went on, he kept getting like closer and
- 25:45Speaker 1: closer to making plays on the ball.
- 25:47Speaker 2: But wouldn't.
- 25:48Speaker 1: And I think it was one in the third quarter
- 25:50Speaker 1: where they ran like a dig Bill's defenses on the
- 25:52Speaker 1: left side of the screen and he reads it and
- 25:56Speaker 1: he he's trying to come in the middle of the
- 25:58Speaker 1: field and he jumps to make the play.
- 25:59Speaker 3: The ball is just because he doesn't have the longest arms.
- 26:01Speaker 3: The ball goes over his outstretched arm, and I was like, oh.
- 26:03Speaker 1: This like he was he read it, he started to
- 26:06Speaker 1: get there, but he still was unable to make the play.
- 26:08Speaker 1: And to your point, though, I think that is something
- 26:11Speaker 1: to be expected. I'm the only thing I feel bad
- 26:13Speaker 1: for him with it actually kind of frustrates me a bit.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Like I saw a lot of people just kind of
- 26:18Speaker 1: I put out a tweet of you know, he's essentially
- 26:21Speaker 1: what I just said, like he's a good run defender,
- 26:22Speaker 1: but he still needs working pass pro or not pass
- 26:24Speaker 1: pro pass coverage.
- 26:25Speaker 3: And people were just coming in like, no, he sucks.
- 26:27Speaker 3: She should be cut. He's terrible. He hasn't done any
- 26:29Speaker 3: of those things. And it's so annoying because.
- 26:30Speaker 1: Like a year ago, he was the greatest linebacker ever
- 26:33Speaker 1: and he should start ahead of Dorian and this it's
- 26:36Speaker 1: just like I think the expectations, positively and negatively gets
- 26:40Speaker 1: so out of whack. And yeah, for a dude who
- 26:43Speaker 1: went to Lancaster and went to UB and was a
- 26:46Speaker 1: very large afterthought and who made a roster. It would
- 26:50Speaker 1: be awesome if he went the route from like nobody
- 26:52Speaker 1: to a starter and was awesome in any But like
- 26:56Speaker 1: I always thinking back to when the Bears picked up
- 26:58Speaker 1: Robbie Gould, the kicker who was their kicker for was
- 27:00Speaker 1: a prolot. He was like roofing and putting up shingle
- 27:02Speaker 1: on like houses, and then all of a sudden it
- 27:04Speaker 1: was kicking for them and being awesome. That doesn't happen
- 27:07Speaker 1: all the time. Guys don't come out of nowhere like
- 27:10Speaker 1: and just all of a sudden to send.
- 27:11Speaker 3: He is a work in progress. He got picked on tonight.
- 27:14Speaker 1: I also think what was also lost in that a
- 27:16Speaker 1: bit Dorian also had some moments where he was lost
- 27:20Speaker 1: in coverage. He's still a work in progress and he's
- 27:23Speaker 1: had much more NFL time on task than Joe Andreeson
- 27:26Speaker 1: and another year, so like perspective for everything. But yeah,
- 27:30Speaker 1: it was I wasn't expecting everyone to turn on Joe
- 27:34Speaker 1: Andreesen so quickly and call for his head like I
- 27:37Speaker 1: felt like I was in the beginning of Shrek and
- 27:39Speaker 1: everybody was there with the torches and pitchforks, ready to
- 27:42Speaker 1: march into the swamp to like take Joe Andreesen's head.
- 27:44Speaker 1: I was surprised at how much they turned on him
- 27:48Speaker 1: so quickly. But yeah, he's a guy who continues to
- 27:51Speaker 1: need to learn and get time on task.
- 27:53Speaker 4: Yeah, and again I think he is going to thrive
- 27:57Speaker 4: in that special team's rule where it's a lot more
- 27:59Speaker 4: than that, knowss. He does have like a preternatural ability
- 28:03Speaker 4: to diagnose run you know, run game, and to really
- 28:07Speaker 4: find the ball and to be able to you know,
- 28:10Speaker 4: like you said, to just decipher what he's seeing and
- 28:13Speaker 4: make the play. That gives me reason to think that
- 28:17Speaker 4: he can learn to do some of that in coverage
- 28:19Speaker 4: like that is much different in the NFL than where
- 28:22Speaker 4: he'd been before. But just we also have to accept
- 28:25Speaker 4: the fact that not everyone's ceiling is a starter like
- 28:30Speaker 4: that doesn't have That's not the only roles on the team.
- 28:32Speaker 4: Every single backup is not a starter in waiting.
- 28:37Speaker 3: It's not like you just oh, yeah, our backups could
- 28:39Speaker 3: easily start. That's not.
- 28:41Speaker 4: Yeah, like a good depth can be a role like
- 28:44Speaker 4: I love obviously one of there's lots of annoying things
- 28:47Speaker 4: about Belichick. One of his great uh sayings, you know,
- 28:50Speaker 4: don't tell me what a guy can't do, tell me
- 28:52Speaker 4: what he can do, and that is what he can do.
- 28:55Speaker 4: Like so that's a perfectly reasonable way to do this.
- 28:58Speaker 4: But we that in mind real quick.
- 29:02Speaker 1: I might to grab this, you know, let's talk about safety.
- 29:04Speaker 1: So I want to grab a super chat from Adam.
- 29:05Speaker 1: I missed it, Adam, thank you for being here. Thank
- 29:07Speaker 1: you for the super chat. I think this is a
- 29:08Speaker 1: very succinct way to put it. Obviously, defensive depth is
- 29:10Speaker 1: an ongoing problem, but we can't read too much into
- 29:13Speaker 1: a preseason game against the team with everything to prove.
- 29:16Speaker 1: I think that's also a good point too, And Gregor
- 29:18Speaker 1: mentions it not mentioned it ties into something you mentioned earlier. Yeah,
- 29:22Speaker 1: the Bears I think treating this more of you have
- 29:24Speaker 1: a new coaching staff. I think the preseason games are
- 29:26Speaker 1: much more tune up finding our rhythm for the regular
- 29:29Speaker 1: season that.
- 29:30Speaker 3: It is for the Bears. Who are for the Bills
- 29:32Speaker 3: I should say who.
- 29:33Speaker 1: I don't want to say the Bills are punting on
- 29:34Speaker 1: the preseason, but I definitely think there is more intention
- 29:38Speaker 1: to what the Bears are doing as they're trying to
- 29:40Speaker 1: get everybody closer to being game ready. Within Dennis Allen's
- 29:45Speaker 1: scheme with in Ben Johnson's offense, whereas the Bills, it
- 29:49Speaker 1: is more we've rode this bike before. Yeah, we want
- 29:53Speaker 1: to make sure the wheels have enough air and the
- 29:54Speaker 1: pedals are good and nothing's too creaky.
- 29:57Speaker 3: But we know how to ride this bike.
- 29:58Speaker 1: I think it is a different bit of a you know,
- 29:59Speaker 1: operation process for each side.
- 30:01Speaker 2: And we also have to realize you have a big
- 30:03Speaker 2: thing you'd add them. I appreciate you. I agree completely.
- 30:08Speaker 4: Also, there might have been different decisions made if we
- 30:10Speaker 4: didn't have I think if I remember Kyle Trimble's message, right,
- 30:15Speaker 4: I think we've had forty seven players need athletic trainer
- 30:19Speaker 4: attention so far as.
- 30:21Speaker 2: Like so.
- 30:24Speaker 4: That's not an exaggeration or a joke. I think he
- 30:26Speaker 4: said the number is forty seven. Forty seven different or
- 30:29Speaker 4: maybe there's some repeats in there. I don't even know,
- 30:33Speaker 4: so maybe things would be a little bit different. Like
- 30:35Speaker 4: I do think there's a point. I think Steve Matthis
- 30:37Speaker 4: has brought it up before, like, hey, I'd actually like
- 30:40Speaker 4: to see us play a little bit more in the preseason, Poach.
- 30:43Speaker 4: We've had some weird you know that the Steelers loss
- 30:45Speaker 4: and the Jets. Zach Wilson loss after Rogers went out
- 30:49Speaker 4: and the hole we dug against Arizona. Like, we have
- 30:51Speaker 4: a pretty consistent track record of like not starting all
- 30:55Speaker 4: that hot to begin the year.
- 30:57Speaker 2: Maybe we should play a little bit.
- 30:58Speaker 4: More in the preseason and be able to work our
- 31:01Speaker 4: way up. So I think in a perfect world, I
- 31:04Speaker 4: don't think that's lost on mcdermtt and the coaching staff
- 31:07Speaker 4: in the front office either. So I do think there's
- 31:10Speaker 4: a chance that if all things were equal and we
- 31:12Speaker 4: had a really healthy training camp.
- 31:15Speaker 2: Maybe we would have seen more things tonight.
- 31:17Speaker 4: But yeah, this is the first one with you know,
- 31:20Speaker 4: they didn't play any starters in the first preseason game
- 31:22Speaker 4: for Chicago. This is a home game on a night game.
- 31:26Speaker 4: Nice little introduction for Ben Johnson to the city and
- 31:29Speaker 4: to the team. I think again, our guys were trying
- 31:33Speaker 4: to they got embarrassed. There's nothing to there. But I
- 31:37Speaker 4: do think there was a little bit more intention from.
- 31:39Speaker 1: Their set that siegwaighs really well into what you were
- 31:43Speaker 1: about to speak on when we talk about you know,
- 31:45Speaker 1: maybe some questionable play, but also some injuries. The safety
- 31:49Speaker 1: position falls into that camp. Taylor Rapp has been banged up.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Cole Bishop has been banged up. We've seen that play
- 31:57Speaker 1: out in the first preseason game, within training camp, within
- 32:00Speaker 1: the scrimmage, all of that No Taylor wrapped. Tonight we
- 32:03Speaker 1: saw a starting safety duo of Cold Bishop and Damar Hamlin. Greg,
- 32:10Speaker 1: what are your thoughts on whether you want to frame
- 32:15Speaker 1: it within the scope of this game or the larger
- 32:18Speaker 1: picture within the safety room. I have large I had
- 32:22Speaker 1: and have large reservations about the safety unit coming into
- 32:27Speaker 1: the season.
- 32:28Speaker 3: I don't feel good.
- 32:29Speaker 1: About it or feel better about it after tonight or
- 32:31Speaker 1: good about it either. I do think some of the
- 32:33Speaker 1: plays early on, especially two of the first three chunk
- 32:36Speaker 1: plays where people were all Damar and Bishop, that was
- 32:40Speaker 1: more on Andreasen in the second level than it was
- 32:42Speaker 1: the safeties, but not a great look tonight for the safeties.
- 32:45Speaker 3: Are you locked into.
- 32:46Speaker 1: More of how they look tonight or are you kind
- 32:49Speaker 1: of projecting it a little more towards the season of
- 32:51Speaker 1: I'm kind of getting a little worried.
- 32:53Speaker 3: On Cold Bishop. I don't feel comfortable with Damar Hamlin.
- 32:56Speaker 3: Rap is banged up.
- 32:57Speaker 1: Like, what are your feelings on this safety group? Did
- 32:59Speaker 1: to influence at all or are you kind of looking
- 33:01Speaker 1: at things just in a vacuum of this performance and
- 33:04Speaker 1: going you know Wolf.
- 33:11Speaker 4: Yeah, I spent a decent amount of time to night,
- 33:16Speaker 4: like researching what does Marcus Williams have left Justin Simmons.
- 33:22Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yeah, so I agree. I do think some
- 33:29Speaker 4: of the things that got laid.
- 33:31Speaker 2: At their feet.
- 33:33Speaker 4: We're on the linebackers are on the defensive line night
- 33:36Speaker 4: getting pressure or whatever other pieces. But I will say,
- 33:41Speaker 4: you know, the Hamlin got caught flat footed on the
- 33:43Speaker 4: Zakiast touchdown.
- 33:44Speaker 3: And that was a really horrible.
- 33:46Speaker 2: Look you got it.
- 33:47Speaker 4: You gotta like, I don't you need to come light
- 33:49Speaker 4: him up, but like you can't.
- 33:51Speaker 2: He didn't touch him, Yeah, he didn't. He didn't touch him.
- 33:56Speaker 4: And he was like there with like a seven yard
- 33:59Speaker 4: cushion with like fifteen yards behind to the end zone.
- 34:03Speaker 3: Like your voice flucts away to a question. But he
- 34:05Speaker 3: didn't touch him.
- 34:07Speaker 2: Like this, like that's a.
- 34:10Speaker 4: That's a concern in the same thing actually, like almost
- 34:13Speaker 4: identical run blitz that Hancock had his TfL on. Hamlins
- 34:21Speaker 4: missed the tackle and end of being like an eight
- 34:23Speaker 4: year game, So like there was some stuff that was
- 34:27Speaker 4: on him, you know, Bishop, I don't the obviously the
- 34:32Speaker 4: one that stands out is him being like locked in
- 34:36Speaker 4: coverage manned man against a Lamede Kias Like that's that
- 34:39Speaker 4: is not an indication of what kind of season coal
- 34:42Speaker 4: Bishop is or is not going to have, because at
- 34:44Speaker 4: no point is that going to be how we successfully
- 34:47Speaker 4: use him, And anytime it is, it's going to need
- 34:52Speaker 4: safety help behind him to do that because a jitterbug,
- 34:56Speaker 4: really fast slot receiver is not going to be a
- 34:59Speaker 4: great matchup for him like that. So you know, it
- 35:02Speaker 4: didn't look good. There's reason to because but the defense
- 35:06Speaker 4: the coaches are well aware of the fact that's not
- 35:08Speaker 4: his skill set to do that.
- 35:11Speaker 2: So we.
- 35:16Speaker 4: Need Tailor Rap to be healthy for seven for twenty
- 35:19Speaker 4: plus games, and that is just you know, more consistently
- 35:27Speaker 4: not a high likelihood of happening. He is the closest
- 35:34Speaker 4: thing do we have to consistent and he at his
- 35:37Speaker 4: best is a high variance player that's not consistent. Like
- 35:41Speaker 4: even when he's at his best, he does make so
- 35:44Speaker 4: many toxic plays and so many disruptive havoc plays that
- 35:49Speaker 4: it makes up for the fact that he's not a
- 35:51Speaker 4: like play and play out like lunch pale guy. Like
- 35:54Speaker 4: he whiffs, he misses, he shoots through spaces trying to
- 35:59Speaker 4: make the big hit and you know, like he do,
- 36:01Speaker 4: but he does enough of them where it lands that
- 36:04Speaker 4: it's worth it.
- 36:04Speaker 2: And like his variance is a net positive overall. And
- 36:08Speaker 2: if you.
- 36:09Speaker 4: Had him, you know, I always think back, if we
- 36:12Speaker 4: could take him, you know, and he had like a
- 36:16Speaker 4: prime like a Hyde as his partner in the secondary,
- 36:19Speaker 4: it would be great because you would have those seasons
- 36:21Speaker 4: where Jordan Poyer was an all pro because he would
- 36:25Speaker 4: be doing all the havoc wreaking. So maddex here asking
- 36:30Speaker 4: about Jordan Hancock. I think the next one.
- 36:32Speaker 2: Was on Derek Forrest safety comments.
- 36:36Speaker 4: Janda Owens, you know, was a guy that was supposed
- 36:39Speaker 4: to be like the UDFA. We would be hopeful about
- 36:41Speaker 4: Jordan Hancock's basically gone from nickel to full time safety,
- 36:48Speaker 4: you know. I know, DeMar Hamlin gets a lot of
- 36:50Speaker 4: hate and Aaron tries to pump the brakes. They're like,
- 36:53Speaker 4: you know, he's actually like a reasonably adequate player. But obviously,
- 36:57Speaker 4: regardless of where you fall on that, at at best
- 37:01Speaker 4: there is a very limited ceiling of of where it is,
- 37:04Speaker 4: and then the impact of the limitations is debatable. Yeah,
- 37:09Speaker 4: I am right, now sort of, and I if I'm
- 37:14Speaker 4: if I'm Marcus Williams Justin Simmons, who there's.
- 37:17Speaker 2: A handful of others out there, but those are the two.
- 37:19Speaker 4: Like guys who actually could probably come in and be
- 37:22Speaker 4: a Trey White type starter, Like, Hey, this isn't gonna
- 37:25Speaker 4: be perfect, but they're going to be good more than
- 37:28Speaker 4: they're bad, and they're going to make the right smart
- 37:30Speaker 4: play enough that we can make this work. If I'm
- 37:33Speaker 4: their agents, I literally am collimborting to means like that's
- 37:37Speaker 4: not that's not me making a joke, like that's like.
- 37:41Speaker 2: What's up? What's up? Like you guys, you want to talk?
- 37:50Speaker 4: I just am All of our eggs are in the
- 37:53Speaker 4: basket of Like, no.
- 37:54Speaker 2: Cole Biship's going to be a good football player. Like
- 37:57Speaker 2: that's it.
- 37:57Speaker 4: That's the entire planet, that's the whole thing. The entire
- 38:00Speaker 4: plan is Coby Ship is going to be good. And
- 38:05Speaker 4: I don't have a ton of evidence that that's correct,
- 38:09Speaker 4: that that's true. I think it's possible. I think there's
- 38:13Speaker 4: a reason he was supposed to be a Day two pick.
- 38:17Speaker 4: He's probably early in the second round, but he was
- 38:20Speaker 4: I think pretty universally a Day two guy. Probably more
- 38:23Speaker 4: a third than second, but like, that's still again that
- 38:29Speaker 4: even if that had been the case, that's the guy
- 38:31Speaker 4: we would have been expecting to compete for a starting
- 38:33Speaker 4: spot this year, a third round pick in his second year, Like,
- 38:36Speaker 4: that's what we should be expecting. I'm gonna hope that
- 38:41Speaker 4: that's the case. We have produced defensive back play from
- 38:46Speaker 4: much lesser players than him. We have a scheme that
- 38:50Speaker 4: allows for guys to play to the best of their ability.
- 38:55Speaker 4: But that's our whole plan is Taylor rep stays healthy
- 38:58Speaker 4: and cold by ship's good and I don't feel awesome
- 39:01Speaker 4: about either of those things, and anyone beyond there is
- 39:05Speaker 4: more concerning than that.
- 39:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it's a very fair I think everything
- 39:10Speaker 1: you said is very very for fair, very fair and
- 39:12Speaker 1: succinctum falling apart, it's just yeah, it's I don't want
- 39:18Speaker 1: to go too much on it because I've spoken about
- 39:20Speaker 1: it so much this offseason. I don't want to bang
- 39:22Speaker 1: the same drummer or repeat myself too much. But it's
- 39:25Speaker 1: all just gotten to the point of I think Jamar
- 39:27Speaker 1: Hamlins is and has always been a very fine safety three.
- 39:31Speaker 3: I think he's a great guy.
- 39:32Speaker 1: Oh, your starter's banged up and he needs to play
- 39:33Speaker 1: for a game or play for you know, two to five.
- 39:35Speaker 3: Okay, cool, he can get the job done.
- 39:37Speaker 1: Or I think he could potentially be a starting safety
- 39:40Speaker 1: on like a loaded defense because he's reliable, he's responsible,
- 39:44Speaker 1: and you can get away if you have a bunch
- 39:46Speaker 1: of playmaker playmakers around him and guys who can do
- 39:48Speaker 1: other things and compensate a bit. But it's funny, yeah,
- 39:53Speaker 1: the notion of him regularly starting on this defense. Again,
- 40:02Speaker 1: his experience at Pitt I thought gave him such a
- 40:05Speaker 1: high floor here that combined with McDermott and co. Especially
- 40:09Speaker 1: being defensive back whisperers and getting so much blood out
- 40:11Speaker 1: of the defensive backstone.
- 40:13Speaker 3: You take Hyde, who.
- 40:15Speaker 1: Was a punt returner and a jack of all trades dB,
- 40:17Speaker 1: and you turn him into an all pro safety. You
- 40:19Speaker 1: take Jordan Poyer, who most Bills fans hadn't heard of
- 40:22Speaker 1: when he left Cleveland, turned him into an all pro.
- 40:24Speaker 1: You take Levi Wallace and make him actually like a
- 40:28Speaker 1: low end CB two after being a straight up UDFA
- 40:31Speaker 1: that no one cared about, undersize, skinny, all that kind
- 40:34Speaker 1: of stuff. So I trust them with safety and at
- 40:38Speaker 1: the same time I find myself like not having confidence
- 40:41Speaker 1: just in this group because I don't want to see
- 40:43Speaker 1: Hamlin starting and Bishop. I just I don't love his
- 40:48Speaker 1: fit within the defense. I didn't like it from the
- 40:50Speaker 1: moment they drafted him. The line I always say is
- 40:52Speaker 1: I thought he was better served being in defense like
- 40:55Speaker 1: Baltimore or Arizona or New England, where it was like
- 40:58Speaker 1: three safeties and he could play more apex monster man
- 41:01Speaker 1: cover tight ends, running backs, in and around the box,
- 41:04Speaker 1: in and around the line of scrimmage.
- 41:05Speaker 3: I always thought the.
- 41:06Speaker 1: Further he got back, the further he got away from
- 41:09Speaker 1: the line of scrimmage, the worse he got, not meaning
- 41:12Speaker 1: that he was bad or subpar, but the further away
- 41:14Speaker 1: the worse he got, the closer.
- 41:16Speaker 3: He was the better.
- 41:17Speaker 1: Obviously, the verse of that he is despite being a
- 41:20Speaker 1: good athlete. I hate that he got matched up with
- 41:23Speaker 1: thea Kiyis because that is not he can man up
- 41:26Speaker 1: on some tight ends and running backs. He's not winning
- 41:28Speaker 1: that battle against a Kis. I don't think a lot
- 41:30Speaker 1: of safeties are so key is like you said, is a.
- 41:32Speaker 4: Shit Jordan Poyer make a Hyde would not have looked
- 41:35Speaker 4: good in that situation.
- 41:37Speaker 1: No, exactly right, you are not putting many safeties against
- 41:42Speaker 1: a And I know Za Keys is bounced around a
- 41:45Speaker 1: bunch of teams, but he is like a functional wide
- 41:48Speaker 1: receiver three in slot and has been for a variety
- 41:51Speaker 1: of teams. And you get him on a man in
- 41:52Speaker 1: a man coverage situation where they run a switch release
- 41:56Speaker 1: and create some outside leverage, beats him inside, and even
- 41:59Speaker 1: that there's no help inside from Andresen.
- 42:02Speaker 3: Because his eyes are elsewhere.
- 42:04Speaker 1: And then as Bishop of trying to get him still again,
- 42:08Speaker 1: the key has beat him. Kudos to him. Tip your cap.
- 42:11Speaker 1: Hamlin's got to make that tackle. Like it's just like it.
- 42:16Speaker 4: Would have been a play we might have talked about
- 42:18Speaker 4: anyways as like a fifteen twenty yard gain and like
- 42:22Speaker 4: a play like oh man cold, like so if DeMar
- 42:24Speaker 4: comes up and makes a tackle there and it's a
- 42:26Speaker 4: seventeen yard gain, it's a play we still talk about.
- 42:29Speaker 4: It's like, man, you like, that's not what col Bishop's
- 42:32Speaker 4: like strength is going to be. But that's it now.
- 42:35Speaker 4: It's like, oh yeah, that that exposed Cole Bishop is
- 42:39Speaker 4: a good athlete, not like a special athlete that no
- 42:42Speaker 4: one's keeping up. And by the way, flip it around
- 42:44Speaker 4: the other way, Elijah Moore would be the same kind
- 42:47Speaker 4: of thing, like if you had you know, a normal
- 42:50Speaker 4: starting safe, like anyone outside of like an absolute freak
- 42:54Speaker 4: like starting safety in that situation in space with no
- 42:57Speaker 4: inside help and pour over the top help every you know,
- 43:01Speaker 4: thirty out of thirty two starting safeties are looking bad
- 43:04Speaker 4: in this.
- 43:05Speaker 1: I am taking if it's Elijah Morgan's cool Bishop, I'm
- 43:07Speaker 1: taking Elijah Moore one hundred out of one hundred times,
- 43:09Speaker 1: Like in the slot of two way go jifty slot
- 43:12Speaker 1: receiver against the starting NFL safety. Yeah, they're they're gonna win.
- 43:15Speaker 1: Let alone, the switch release and what Ben Johnson did,
- 43:17Speaker 1: good little design, cool kudos, dip your cap. But it
- 43:19Speaker 1: was so funny that it just Bishop gets beat and
- 43:24Speaker 1: then Hamlin misses the tackle, and I was just like, Oh,
- 43:27Speaker 1: what a horrible way for them to score and to
- 43:31Speaker 1: start the game like that, given where this position group is.
- 43:34Speaker 4: For a lot of fans, Yeah it's Kate Morris says here,
- 43:36Speaker 4: I don't understand why it's so hard. Why can't we
- 43:38Speaker 4: just get to Kyle Hamilton's like, just do that and
- 43:42Speaker 4: we'd be able to you know, have be crazy.
- 43:45Speaker 1: No, it's terrible and It'd be crazy if a team
- 43:47Speaker 1: like Baltimore could have a Kyle Hamilton and then pair
- 43:50Speaker 1: them with a safety like a Malachi Starts.
- 43:54Speaker 3: It would be so crazy if they could do that.
- 43:56Speaker 2: Terrible.
- 43:57Speaker 1: Yeah, And it's just I don't I think Bishop can
- 44:02Speaker 1: still be fine. I don't love his fit in this defense,
- 44:04Speaker 1: and I don't like the pairings of any of them,
- 44:07Speaker 1: Like wrapping Hamdling together. You're limited athletically Bishop and Rap.
- 44:13Speaker 1: Bishop is athletic, but doesn't yet have the processing to
- 44:16Speaker 1: put that athleticism to use.
- 44:18Speaker 3: The farther he gets away.
- 44:19Speaker 1: From the line of scrimmage, and it all just I
- 44:23Speaker 1: think I tweeted it like last week and I met
- 44:25Speaker 1: as a joke, but I really do seriously believe it.
- 44:26Speaker 1: I think this is karma from the football gods from me,
- 44:28Speaker 1: and like you guys had awesome safeties for years, you
- 44:31Speaker 1: have to pay the tax now and just have questionable
- 44:33Speaker 1: and inconsistent play going forward. And that's what gives me
- 44:37Speaker 1: that I think the most pause. And also even with tonight,
- 44:40Speaker 1: I would have liked to see I always coming back
- 44:42Speaker 1: from injury.
- 44:42Speaker 3: I would have liked to see more coal Bishop.
- 44:44Speaker 1: I think he needs more time on task I don't
- 44:46Speaker 1: know if them pulling him was always going to be
- 44:48Speaker 1: part of the plan, or hey, we're just kind of
- 44:50Speaker 1: working him in. Let's get his legs under him because
- 44:52Speaker 1: he is working back from injury. I would have liked
- 44:54Speaker 1: to see him get more work.
- 44:57Speaker 3: Is like a little bit more something? Yeah, something?
- 45:01Speaker 2: But so you know, and I don't. I don't know
- 45:04Speaker 2: that I.
- 45:04Speaker 4: Expect overreaction or panic from this team. I don't think
- 45:10Speaker 4: they do that a lot. But I will say, if
- 45:12Speaker 4: somebody asked me, what is the one position that if
- 45:16Speaker 4: we did make a move, even though it's fun to
- 45:18Speaker 4: say Terry McLaurin or Trey Hendrickson or Mikerol Parsons or
- 45:21Speaker 4: all those things. And of course, anytime somebody comes available,
- 45:24Speaker 4: Brenda Bean checks and if they're actually going to be moved,
- 45:28Speaker 4: I'm sure he has conversations. All those things are very
- 45:30Speaker 4: very real us actually pursuing a player to check in on, like.
- 45:36Speaker 2: Hey, you had a high draft.
- 45:40Speaker 4: Pick at safety and okay, good. So Douglass confirmed. I
- 45:46Speaker 4: know I saw cal Trimble like speculated that when he
- 45:50Speaker 4: immediately came out was his guest was it was a
- 45:52Speaker 4: rep count. So I'm glad mcdermo confirmed that he wasn't benched.
- 45:56Speaker 1: Oh yeah right, and say somebody was like mcdermoty probably
- 45:59Speaker 1: pulled up because he sucked so much.
- 46:00Speaker 3: I was like, I don't think that's what happened.
- 46:02Speaker 4: I don't think that's the case. That that is the
- 46:06Speaker 4: spot like that, I'm half joking about the Marcus Williams
- 46:10Speaker 4: and Justin Simmons saying Justin Simmons did not look good
- 46:13Speaker 4: in Atlanta last year, so people need to remove the
- 46:16Speaker 4: name from the play. And what's still there? I like,
- 46:21Speaker 4: if I feel bad saying this, because he was such
- 46:23Speaker 4: an warrior first, so amazing, Like I I even had
- 46:27Speaker 4: the moment of like do we call Poyer?
- 46:29Speaker 2: Like oh wow?
- 46:31Speaker 4: Like and he he was done in his last year
- 46:34Speaker 4: with us let alone in Miami last year. I've just
- 46:37Speaker 4: grasped in a strass like I'm just at the point
- 46:39Speaker 4: of like, man, I.
- 46:41Speaker 3: Just said a lot that you're grasping.
- 46:43Speaker 2: I need process.
- 46:44Speaker 4: I need processing, like I don't I I we have
- 46:47Speaker 4: shown we can scheme around athletic limitations. We can't like
- 46:52Speaker 4: we can scheme around athletic limitations. And I will say
- 46:56Speaker 4: the couple flashes. The only positive we talked about here
- 46:59Speaker 4: was the past rush impact. That's without Larry Over Jobe
- 47:03Speaker 4: and Michael White and Joey Bosa and all those different Like,
- 47:06Speaker 4: I actually think there's a chance we have the most
- 47:09Speaker 4: impactful pass rush of the Josh Allen era. I'm not
- 47:11Speaker 4: saying cold front four guys in double digits acts. I
- 47:15Speaker 4: think we're gonna have the most impactful pass rush that
- 47:17Speaker 4: Josh Allen has had.
- 47:18Speaker 1: The run defense piece I am concerned about, but they
- 47:21Speaker 1: should have a significant upgrade from a pass rush standpoint.
- 47:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 47:24Speaker 4: So if that's the case, even more so that you
- 47:27Speaker 4: can scheme around limitations. Now that means we're not kind
- 47:30Speaker 4: of as many disguised coverages. But if you have a
- 47:34Speaker 4: pass rush that can get home, you don't need as
- 47:36Speaker 4: many disguised coverages, like you all those things can go
- 47:40Speaker 4: like those are all things where like, hey, maybe if
- 47:43Speaker 4: we just have a guy like Simmons who obviously doesn't
- 47:46Speaker 4: have a ton left in the tank athletically, but is
- 47:48Speaker 4: an incredibly smart player and knows where to be, is
- 47:52Speaker 4: that the lesser of evils? And that if Taylor Rap's
- 47:55Speaker 4: throwing his body around like crazy, and now all of
- 47:58Speaker 4: a sudden, you put a piece like that in as
- 48:00Speaker 4: just a placeholder and against Trey White, I think is
- 48:03Speaker 4: the corollar, Like, hey, there's limitations there, but like he
- 48:06Speaker 4: is going to do the right things play and play
- 48:08Speaker 4: out and we'll deal with the rest. Yes, he's going
- 48:10Speaker 4: to get roasted on a cross or at some point
- 48:12Speaker 4: in the game, people are going to lose their minds,
- 48:14Speaker 4: but he's gonna have like fifty five other really good
- 48:16Speaker 4: snaps in that game and we'll live. Maybe if you
- 48:20Speaker 4: plug A Simmons or Marcus Williams or whoever into that
- 48:24Speaker 4: spot as a placeholder with limitations and not great, but
- 48:27Speaker 4: they're going to make the right plays, they're going to
- 48:28Speaker 4: make the right reads, they're going to know where to be.
- 48:30Speaker 4: All of a sudden, now you remove the point of
- 48:33Speaker 4: like when Taylor rap gets hurt, when that's cold Bishop
- 48:35Speaker 4: coming into that spot where he spends most of the
- 48:37Speaker 4: time down to the line of scrimmage, and now like
- 48:40Speaker 4: its just the domino effect of like functionality.
- 48:43Speaker 2: And I think I saw a question in the chat
- 48:45Speaker 2: about Derek Forrest. I won't lie.
- 48:47Speaker 4: I let myself get a little bit excited when we
- 48:50Speaker 4: signed him, just because you go back two years and
- 48:52Speaker 4: you look at that previous play that he had in
- 48:55Speaker 4: his second season and then got kind of lost the
- 48:59Speaker 4: job and they made a defense, and I convinced himself.
- 49:01Speaker 2: Well, maybe it just wasn't the right fit.
- 49:03Speaker 4: Maybe we could recapture that because you went through Levi
- 49:06Speaker 4: Wallace and day Jackson and all the poyer and hide
- 49:09Speaker 4: what they were. I was like, Hey, if somebody's going
- 49:11Speaker 4: to recapture who was a pretty high level athlete and recapture.
- 49:15Speaker 2: That, maybe we can do that.
- 49:17Speaker 4: But that does not seem to be taking place with
- 49:20Speaker 4: therefore us, he's maybe clinging to a fifty second, fifty
- 49:25Speaker 4: third roster spot. Special teams kind of thing he was on.
- 49:29Speaker 4: He was in there with the starting whatever you want
- 49:33Speaker 4: to call that special teams unit for punt coverage and
- 49:36Speaker 4: kick coverage. I didn't notice that. So he's at least
- 49:39Speaker 4: fighting for that spot. But I don't think we want
- 49:44Speaker 4: him playing snaps either.
- 49:46Speaker 3: And I do think too he didn't play tonight.
- 49:48Speaker 1: I think cam Lewis might be safety three on this
- 49:51Speaker 1: team if we're really kind of maybe push comes to shove,
- 49:54Speaker 1: like if Bishop or anything happens to wrap, cam Lewis
- 49:56Speaker 1: goes in ahead of Hamlin. I don't know if that
- 49:58Speaker 1: makes anybody feel any better. But cam Lewis functions into
- 50:01Speaker 1: that conversation as well.
- 50:03Speaker 2: I can't even process if that makes me feel better
- 50:07Speaker 2: or worse.
- 50:08Speaker 4: That's that would say, I actually think I'm sad that
- 50:12Speaker 4: that makes me feel better.
- 50:13Speaker 2: I think that's the emotion of feeling.
- 50:15Speaker 1: Right now, You're like, you're like, oh, that's nice, and
- 50:19Speaker 1: then you're like, oh no.
- 50:21Speaker 4: Yeah, correct, Like I'm pretty sure the emotion and feeling
- 50:24Speaker 4: is sadness at the realization that that made me feel better.
- 50:27Speaker 3: That's where we're at.
- 50:29Speaker 1: Yeah, it's just and even when they they need Rap
- 50:32Speaker 1: back there, and Bobby Babbage just said it like that
- 50:35Speaker 1: position is so cerebral they need Rap back there for
- 50:39Speaker 1: the adjustment standpoint. But again, I just don't think like
- 50:43Speaker 1: the fifth Wrap and Bishop are both better in and
- 50:46Speaker 1: around the box and around the line of scrimmage. And
- 50:48Speaker 1: if you put Taylor rap as a single high safety,
- 50:50Speaker 1: he doesn't have the range, but he has the processing.
- 50:52Speaker 1: If you put Bishop back there, he's the theory got
- 50:55Speaker 1: the range in the athleticism, but he doesn't have the processing.
- 50:58Speaker 1: They both can do the two high stuff, but they're
- 50:59Speaker 1: both are coming forward. Yeah, it's just it very makes
- 51:03Speaker 1: it very much makes me feel just kind of like
- 51:04Speaker 1: looking at the safety room. I keep just being like,
- 51:07Speaker 1: how did we get here? Like that's what I keep asking,
- 51:11Speaker 1: And as bad things happen, I'm just like, how did
- 51:13Speaker 1: we get here?
- 51:14Speaker 4: The really frustrated I think it was Doug said in
- 51:17Speaker 4: the chat earlier about how he remembers back during the
- 51:21Speaker 4: draft when people are like, well, we don't need Malchi
- 51:23Speaker 4: starks like we have like we already have a plan
- 51:26Speaker 4: at safety or whatever it was. And yeah, no, I
- 51:30Speaker 4: had safety on the list the whole time. I would
- 51:33Speaker 4: have been found with it. I wanted Xavier Wats when
- 51:34Speaker 4: he was falling. I figure I wanted conversation. In the chat, yeah,
- 51:38Speaker 4: David Watts.
- 51:39Speaker 3: Everybody told me Cam Kitchen sucks because you didn't run
- 51:42Speaker 3: a great forty pretty sweet for the Rams last year.
- 51:45Speaker 3: But we took Bishop.
- 51:46Speaker 1: But again, rookies will see and man, you know it's
- 51:47Speaker 1: going to be really bad. If Bishop doesn't pan out.
- 51:51Speaker 1: Then that draft, the two the round two pick and
- 51:53Speaker 1: the third pick, it was cold Bishop and Dwayne Carter.
- 51:55Speaker 1: Carter already looks like he could be gone, and nobody
- 51:59Speaker 1: would think twice. And if Bishop wasn't pan out, oh boy,
- 52:01Speaker 1: I'm waiting for people to jump on.
- 52:03Speaker 4: I'm now fully expecting like Cody ford Ish trade for
- 52:09Speaker 4: a drinker. I don't think he gets released, but I
- 52:11Speaker 4: expect a like, hey, we traded doing Carter and like wait,
- 52:14Speaker 4: wait for the details, and they go, oh, hey, we
- 52:17Speaker 4: twraded traded Duane Carter in a six for a five.
- 52:21Speaker 6: Yeah, okay, cool, that's a way awesome Yet a thing
- 52:28Speaker 6: for him for that third round pick, Yeah awesome, unfortunate.
- 52:33Speaker 1: Let's try to spin it to some positives as we
- 52:37Speaker 1: move on in this episode.
- 52:39Speaker 3: Tyrrel Shavers look good again tonight. He got open. He's interesting.
- 52:44Speaker 3: I would like to see him get some more work
- 52:46Speaker 3: with Josh Allen. That's a fun thing. Looked good last week,
- 52:49Speaker 3: looked good this week. I'm excited to see him on tape.
- 52:52Speaker 2: I think that's a positive. Yes, it's a great way
- 52:56Speaker 2: to end this here is to have something to cling to.
- 52:59Speaker 2: I been.
- 53:00Speaker 4: I don't know if he's joking or not. Brad Robbins
- 53:02Speaker 4: is a good punter. That's Brad Robbins is a good
- 53:04Speaker 4: punter like he is. That is a real thing. I
- 53:08Speaker 4: hope that he's a good holder. I hope that that's
- 53:11Speaker 4: the case. We don't know because Kaden David is not
- 53:16Speaker 4: a good kicker, said that, I don't. I won't count
- 53:18Speaker 4: that against him. But Brad Robbins is a good punter.
- 53:22Speaker 4: That's cool, Like, I'm good with that. He's young, he's good.
- 53:25Speaker 4: We can be here for a while.
- 53:26Speaker 2: Totally good.
- 53:28Speaker 4: Terrelle Shapers, I now think I've gone through this from
- 53:35Speaker 4: a roster machination standpoint, and I now think that there
- 53:39Speaker 4: is actually no value in releasing Curtis Samuel. He has
- 53:45Speaker 4: a guaranteed salary. There's no value.
- 53:47Speaker 3: Yeah, the dead Cats sucks.
- 53:50Speaker 4: It doesn't it kicks into next year. It doesn't actually
- 53:53Speaker 4: hurt us this year. It's basically so for this season.
- 53:56Speaker 4: It does suck overall for this season. It's no difference.
- 53:59Speaker 2: It's technically four hundred and forty thousand dollars in savings technically.
- 54:05Speaker 3: Purely from how much it costs, even though you get
- 54:07Speaker 3: to your points correct.
- 54:08Speaker 4: So it would now add like a six millions whatever
- 54:11Speaker 4: into next year, maybe even more seven point three something
- 54:13Speaker 4: like that.
- 54:16Speaker 2: But Turel Shavers.
- 54:19Speaker 4: May have now put the Bills in a position where
- 54:26Speaker 4: the IR.
- 54:27Speaker 2: Curtis Samuel, because you can do the eligible.
- 54:30Speaker 4: For return IR designation in camp and that like, hey,
- 54:34Speaker 4: you can't practice. We don't trust that you're going to
- 54:37Speaker 4: be ready to play. We have to pay for you. Anyways,
- 54:40Speaker 4: We're not paying for you and giving you one of
- 54:42Speaker 4: our fifty three investor spots. We're just gonna stash you
- 54:46Speaker 4: over here, and then you could get to a point
- 54:49Speaker 4: where break glass in case of emergency, secure reaggravate something.
- 54:55Speaker 4: Elijah Mortgan stinged up, Hey, we need you, We're going
- 54:58Speaker 4: to activate you. But I almost think like charl Shavers
- 55:02Speaker 4: has played so well that like, hey, we can't keep
- 55:05Speaker 4: a third slot receiver gadget guy.
- 55:08Speaker 2: We have two of those already can catch screen passes
- 55:10Speaker 2: and play the slot. We don't need a third one.
- 55:12Speaker 4: We need more, you know, field stretching, big body guys
- 55:16Speaker 4: who will play special teams and covered units, and like,
- 55:19Speaker 4: you know, you see him and you see the length
- 55:21Speaker 4: of the ability. But like when they showed when they
- 55:23Speaker 4: popped up his little thing on the chiron and it
- 55:26Speaker 4: was like.
- 55:27Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, he's six four two fifteen huh he is
- 55:31Speaker 2: pretty big.
- 55:32Speaker 3: Yeah, and he can move pretty well for that.
- 55:34Speaker 2: Oh god, dude, he.
- 55:36Speaker 4: His release on that one where they it's it's not
- 55:40Speaker 4: enough where I don't like we had this moment with
- 55:45Speaker 4: Joe and recent last year where I went through the
- 55:47Speaker 4: stages of like, oh that's kind of neat too, like oh,
- 55:49Speaker 4: this is pretty good. Oh, we can't expose him to Waibers,
- 55:54Speaker 4: like he he has to make the roster, like you can't.
- 55:57Speaker 2: This is that you can't expose him to Weibers. I
- 56:01Speaker 2: almost think troll Shavers has graduated to I don't think.
- 56:07Speaker 4: I do not think we can assume he's gonna make
- 56:09Speaker 4: it to our practice squad.
- 56:11Speaker 3: Mmmm, you know.
- 56:12Speaker 1: I mean you can't teach size, and you can't teach
- 56:16Speaker 1: speed and athleticism and he's got I mean it's the
- 56:19Speaker 1: positives that we talked about what could make him, you know,
- 56:21Speaker 1: something to crack the roster, and like, well, you just
- 56:23Speaker 1: mentioned he's got size, he's got some frame, he's got
- 56:25Speaker 1: some long speed, he's got some athleticism, be showing good hands.
- 56:28Speaker 1: I think there's you to steal one of your phrases.
- 56:30Speaker 1: There's a non zero chance that he gets picked up somewhere.
- 56:33Speaker 1: I do think it's a fair ass the same man
- 56:36Speaker 1: the Samuel conversation, even just from a not even from
- 56:39Speaker 1: a quality of play standpoint, Like I just don't think
- 56:42Speaker 1: you're gonna say, Samuel dresses for week one and whatever
- 56:46Speaker 1: is ailing him now is all healed up. He's probably
- 56:50Speaker 1: gonna get banged up at some point. Again, Like I
- 56:52Speaker 1: just you can't count O Curt to Samuel to play
- 56:54Speaker 1: a full season health healthy, or just in general at
- 56:57Speaker 1: some point, So like you're going to need another You're
- 57:01Speaker 1: gonna need your wide receiver six to become wide receiver
- 57:03Speaker 1: five or wide receiver four however one And that's not
- 57:06Speaker 1: taking into account what happens if Palmer gets banged up
- 57:08Speaker 1: or Keon gets banged up. And Yeah, it's become this
- 57:11Speaker 1: really interesting spot where at first I was like, oh,
- 57:13Speaker 1: let's see if anybody can make some noise on the
- 57:15Speaker 1: depth charts, And now I'm like, they do. They need
- 57:19Speaker 1: to use him, Like is Samuel done? Like it's it's
- 57:22Speaker 1: a conversation that I don't like having.
- 57:24Speaker 2: Yeah, but I think it's kind of a necessary one, especially.
- 57:27Speaker 4: With the contract they they contributed that he had basically
- 57:31Speaker 4: two guaranteed years last year and this year, and we're
- 57:36Speaker 4: going to get like less than one combined season out
- 57:39Speaker 4: of the It's really unfortunate.
- 57:41Speaker 1: That's a dark side. Yeah, Unfortunately, the Shaver's look good.
- 57:43Speaker 1: Anybody else that you thought, uh flashed? Then I thought
- 57:46Speaker 1: Frank Gore looked good again. I know he had the
- 57:48Speaker 1: fumble at the end, but he just I don't know,
- 57:50Speaker 1: Frank Gore just continues to be like super efficient and
- 57:52Speaker 1: make guys miss with that dead leg and just keeps
- 57:54Speaker 1: finding a way to get forward.
- 57:55Speaker 3: Good for him. Jordan Hancock had some nice flashes, yes, at.
- 58:00Speaker 4: Least that we did mention the pass rush snaps for
- 58:02Speaker 4: Sanders and Dean Walker and Landa Jackson same but like
- 58:05Speaker 4: all three of them, they at least had positive flashes.
- 58:07Speaker 4: They all had some negative plays they're going to want
- 58:09Speaker 4: back and some you know, uncomfortable film breakdowns that that
- 58:13Speaker 4: they'll go through.
- 58:15Speaker 2: I thought that was positive. Ed if one.
- 58:17Speaker 4: Ufotio I saw again, at least I noticed him, and
- 58:24Speaker 4: I remember bringing that up like last preseason, like I
- 58:27Speaker 4: didn't even notice that he existed, and like at least
- 58:31Speaker 4: he made.
- 58:31Speaker 2: Me notice he was there, and the same thing.
- 58:34Speaker 4: Wanday Owens for the first time noticed that he existed,
- 58:37Speaker 4: Like and then that was a guy that I know
- 58:39Speaker 4: a handful of the again, guys like you and Sikos
- 58:42Speaker 4: that go deep into the drafts, was like, Hey, keep
- 58:44Speaker 4: an eye on this guy. There's a chance he could
- 58:46Speaker 4: be a sneaky one, especially with what the safety room is,
- 58:48Speaker 4: and the obviously hasn't been the case, but I at
- 58:52Speaker 4: least noticed him for the for the first time there.
- 58:53Speaker 4: So maybe he's the kind of guy that, like, maybe
- 58:56Speaker 4: he could push for a practice squad kind of kind
- 58:59Speaker 4: of thing.
- 58:59Speaker 2: I don't.
- 58:59Speaker 4: I don't think he will, but that I think they're
- 59:02Speaker 4: going to be throwing some darts there for where that is.
- 59:05Speaker 1: I'm hoping some I always say with from a back
- 59:08Speaker 1: end coverage perspective and for a lot of the trenches,
- 59:10Speaker 1: I always like to wait to see the tape.
- 59:13Speaker 3: I'm hoping.
- 59:13Speaker 1: I'm really hopeful that I come out of the tape. Yeah,
- 59:16Speaker 1: kJ hammler uh popped a little bit. Yeah, he's got
- 59:20Speaker 1: some just value, especially with the juice that he brings.
- 59:23Speaker 1: He could, you know, potentially make a case for that
- 59:25Speaker 1: last wide receiver spot too, potentially if there was one.
- 59:28Speaker 3: I'm hoping.
- 59:29Speaker 1: I'm hoping watching the tape somebody pops more in the
- 59:33Speaker 1: trenches or from a coverage standpoint, I'm like, oh, this
- 59:36Speaker 1: was a nice piece to see. I don't want to
- 59:38Speaker 1: watch the offensive line, because they look bad. The backups
- 59:40Speaker 1: on offensive line scare me. They're getting knocked around. I
- 59:43Speaker 1: don't think it'll come from there. I'm hoping defensively, I
- 59:45Speaker 1: can hang my head on something. I am really it's again,
- 59:49Speaker 1: very rarely do I tune out in a game or
- 59:52Speaker 1: like not want to watch the tape. And I tuned
- 59:54Speaker 1: out in this one, and I don't want to watch
- 59:56Speaker 1: the All twenty two like and so I'm hoping somebody
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: and give me something like you know what, that game sucked,
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: but Timmy looked really good.
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: So let's look at Timmy.
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: Like just the offensive line went.
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: It's the biggest one where we didn't have the equity
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: of who was going against who because our backups are
- 1:00:13Speaker 4: pretty good, but like the pair of starting defensive line
- 1:00:16Speaker 4: is good, like they have like their front has some players.
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: So like all of a sudden, now you're like, well,
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: like our backups aren't going to be like moving people
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: that are starters. And then when that switch, now then
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: you had like our third string guys against their backups,
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: and like our third string guys aren't anything special because
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: we didn't invest in anyone because we brought back our
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: top nine or ten guys, so it was all udfas
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: and you know, just street free agent guys.
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: So like it took a while.
- 1:00:46Speaker 4: Then like towards the end, you at least had some
- 1:00:48Speaker 4: equity there where we could sudden, now you saw Frank
- 1:00:50Speaker 4: Gore running and moving. When you got our third string
- 1:00:53Speaker 4: guys against their third string guys, you had some equity
- 1:00:56Speaker 4: where now all of a sudden, it was like okay,
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: and then we started to move a little bit. So
- 1:01:00Speaker 4: like that was one of the biggest examples of today's game,
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: where like just the guys they were playing and who
- 1:01:05Speaker 4: we were playing, well, yeah, like we have. There's a
- 1:01:08Speaker 4: reason Brandon Thorne branks US as the third best offensive
- 1:01:11Speaker 4: line in the NFL when none of those guys played
- 1:01:14Speaker 4: is zero, literally zero, even our primary backup, our six guy,
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: Alec Anderson. Like literally none of the guys who played
- 1:01:21Speaker 4: for us played. So of course when you went for
- 1:01:24Speaker 4: lineman seven through eleven as the starters and then lineman
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: twelve through sixteen, uh next, yeah, of course, it wasn't
- 1:01:32Speaker 4: look awesome to be able to do those things.
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: So once I saw Ryan, I hope you long armed
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: by Austin Booker and driven into the backfield. I was like, well,
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: that's probably they're gonna get going to.
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: Get worked by this unit because he's offensive lineman seven
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: essentially maybe ah yeah.
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: And when he got worked by Booker, I was like,
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: oh no, this gives not a lot of hope for
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: the rest of the group.
- 1:01:52Speaker 4: So I too look forward to you finding something positive
- 1:01:56Speaker 4: out of out.
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: Of what I just experienced. But we're at an hour mark,
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: and I'm embarrassed for us that we I.
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: Really didn't think we would go well.
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: In all fairness though, we really just spoke a lot
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: on the negatives, and I think it was that very cathartic.
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: We needed to do this.
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: I think I think the sleep because if we didn't
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: do this, I'd still be awake, but I would just
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: be like hands folded on my chest, just staring up
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: at the ceiling, like not being able to sleep.
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: So I think this was cathartic.
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: We can we talked it out, We had some positive conversations,
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: even though it was about negative things, and then we
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: can say goodbye and unplug and just go into our beds.
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: And go to sleep.
- 1:02:30Speaker 4: That's right, that's right, that's right, and tomorrow all research
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: available free agents.
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: Yeah, and so I wakes up early and take a
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: peek and see who will cost what and what money
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: is in the bananasan or you know what, who needs
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: safeties if you just trade for Trey Hendrickson.
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: Right, waves and waves of pass rushers.
- 1:02:52Speaker 4: So if anybody wants to know my process, obviously I'm
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: gonna look at the free agents. I'm gonna figure out
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: like Kay did Jordan Whitehead of in anything left, Marcus William,
- 1:03:00Speaker 4: Justin Simmons of whoever?
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: All those guys there.
- 1:03:02Speaker 4: Then I'll go through like the first five or six,
- 1:03:07Speaker 4: maybe eight safeties drafted in the draft and go look
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: at those teams to see, hey, did they retain a
- 1:03:14Speaker 4: guy who played last year and is getting bumped into
- 1:03:17Speaker 4: a backup role, and then figure out which of those
- 1:03:20Speaker 4: guys can we trade Dwayne Carter for.
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: It all comes back to the trade for Dway Carr.
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: Gotta find some use for that four third round.
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: Yeah. I don't even want to make the joke, but everything.
- 1:03:36Speaker 4: Well, Steve brought it up like we saw like the
- 1:03:39Speaker 4: Kaitlin saying, oh yeah, Luke Fortin te I just want
- 1:03:42Speaker 4: that trade, Like I want to trade Dwayne Carter for
- 1:03:45Speaker 4: somebody's third safety, who's good enough to be our band, aid.
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: I would have been alright with that. I'm not gonna
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: speak ill. I talked about him so negatively throughout the
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: entire offseason.
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: I'm not gonna do it again.
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: Yeah, that's rough Greg. Any parting thoughts or words for
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: any of the people.
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: I'm glad this game didn't count.
- 1:04:07Speaker 3: That's fair. That's fair. You know it does count.
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: The deliciousness of One Pie Pizza the best pizza in Buffalo.
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: New York.
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: If you want to try and pick yourselves up off
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: the ground from this terrible evening of football, can wake
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: up on Monday, you get yourself a breakfast pizza from
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: One Pie Pizza, which is absolutely tremendous, or just get
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: a regular pie in the afternoon. Maybe some lunchtime action,
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: maybe some dinner action. I don't say that the best
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: pizza in Buffalo, New York because they sponsor the show.
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: They sponsor the show because I sincerely think they are
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: the best pizza in Buffalo, New York. And they have
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: fantastic homemade blue cheese. They also do a bunch of
