- 0:00Hour number two, Miller and Condon, it's the Iowa Sports
- 0:02Radio Network flag shipped at Des Moines sports station one O
- 0:066.3 KXO. Thanks for joining us.
- 0:08Trent and I will take you toward the top of the hour.
- 0:11His plays of the day circus sports sponsor those those are
- 0:14still to come about 10 minutes or so before 2 and then at 2 off
- 0:18the bench, Lucas Strange, Sean Roberts to win till 5.
- 0:21Let's talk some baseball. Our guys Matt Snyder,
- 0:24CBSSports.com CBSSports.com for Matt Snyder and he joins us
- 0:29every Tuesday at this time. Hello Matt, Trenton can
- 0:32appreciate this as always. I guess where I want to start
- 0:35with you is I did not realize as I had thrown dirt on the Arizona
- 0:39Diamondbacks that they were hopelessly out of it.
- 0:43I, I look this morning, they're the closest pursuer to the last
- 0:46wild card in the National League, which I don't think is
- 0:49going to happen because they went one step further to look at
- 0:52what they have left. So they finish with the Giants,
- 0:55then they host three against the Phillies, three against the
- 0:57Dodgers before going to San Diego.
- 1:00I defy anybody to find a different close, more difficult
- 1:03closing stretch than that one. But it's I guess they hold their
- 1:07fate in their hands in some respects.
- 1:10Yeah, yeah, I guess they do. I don't think they're going to
- 1:13make it. But look, the Mets are still
- 1:16going to make it, right? Like the Mets have left the door
- 1:18open for the Reds, and the Reds just absolutely refused to walk
- 1:21through it. The Giants were playing
- 1:24completely over their heads there for a couple weeks.
- 1:26That has now ended. So I don't see the Giants as a
- 1:29thread either. It's it really.
- 1:30It should have been the Red, but they just haven't played well
- 1:34enough. They even took two or three from
- 1:35the Mets at home there on that Friday through Sunday series
- 1:38about a week and a half ago. But they did not follow that up
- 1:41strong enough. And you know, it's it's kind of
- 1:44it's too bad because I think it would have been really cool and
- 1:47Terry Francona's first year back for the Reds.
- 1:50They haven't been to a real season playoff because we can
- 1:53throw 2020 out in a long, long time, well over a decade.
- 1:56So that would have been cool. But I think the Mets are going
- 1:59to get things right enough just to squeak into the one item of
- 2:05note here is, as I pointed out in my power ranking, is like,
- 2:09let me pull up exactly what what it is the Cardinals.
- 2:14The Cardinals went 14 and 14 in June, 8 and 16 in July, 13 and
- 2:2015 in August, and now they're five and eight in September.
- 2:23They're only four and a half games out of a playoff spot.
- 2:26I mean, if that's not the biggest illustration ever that
- 2:29we have too many playoff teams in this sport.
- 2:32I, I don't know what it is. It's one of the best features of
- 2:36baseball has always been our marathon of a regular season.
- 2:39And we're we're staring down the barrel of the Reds right now
- 2:43being 75 and 75 and only being two games out.
- 2:45The Giants exact same 7575 two games out.
- 2:49You should not only be two games out of a playoff spot with your
- 2:51500 after this long, you just shouldn't.
- 2:54And that's how you get stuff like those Diamondbacks in the
- 2:57World Series a couple of years ago.
- 2:58You get the 84 one Marlins in the playoffs a couple of years
- 3:01ago. I know it's cool for those teams
- 3:03to make the playoffs, but they should not get a chance in the
- 3:05postseason. You had 162 games during the
- 3:08regular season to be better than 84 and 78 whoever.
- 3:12Gets in in that, that final wild card spot, Mets, Diamondbacks,
- 3:16Reds, even the Giants. If somebody can track down the
- 3:19Mets, is there anybody that's dangerous out of that group?
- 3:22Anybody that could make a run, not to win the whole thing, but
- 3:25win a couple of series, maybe find themselves in the NLCS?
- 3:28Anybody that you'd spotlight out of that group?
- 3:32I still think the Mets have the highest upside if they can get
- 3:34their rotation sorted out, which I don't think they will, but if
- 3:37they could, I just not that much to like about the Diamondbacks.
- 3:42The Reds, you could say, OK, Hunter Green, Andrew Abbott,
- 3:47Nicolo. They get things firing there,
- 3:49sure, but man, they just don't hit.
- 3:50They just don't hit enough. They don't have any power and
- 3:53they play in Great American ballpark.
- 3:54They have so many more home runs.
- 3:57Not that much for me on the Giants, I suppose with the
- 4:01Giants, if you looked at Logan Webb and Robbie Ray and if
- 4:05Justin Verlander gets right for a quick second and the way that
- 4:08Matt Chapman, Raphael Devers and Willie Adamas swung the bats so
- 4:12well for that three-week stretch, that's enough heavy
- 4:14hitters there. But I'm still just not seeing
- 4:17it. And here's the big thing,
- 4:19Because the Phillies are so far ahead of the Dodgers for the two
- 4:23seed, whoever gets that last wild card spot is going to have
- 4:26to deal with Dodgers and the wild card round in Dodger
- 4:29Stadium. You have fun with I want to I
- 4:33want to ask you about this kind of a selfish 1 and I'm not.
- 4:36It was never a John Snyder fan. The manager of the Blue Jays.
- 4:40We heard. But boy, I am now.
- 4:43So how is this guy not a slam dunk manager of the year in the
- 4:47American League? I mean, who's done a better job
- 4:50than him? They got the best record in the
- 4:52league. I think he's got to be, he's got
- 4:54to be. I think he's going to win Dan
- 4:56Wilson with the Mariners if the Mariners hold on to the AL West
- 4:59here with the furious late rally.
- 5:02But the Jays win total before the season like 70.
- 5:04Six, yeah, I think. And a lot of people.
- 5:08I bet you we could find a decent number of people who picked them
- 5:10to finish last. Oh yeah.
- 5:13Yeah, probably, definitely the Yankees and probably the Orioles
- 5:16were picked to finish for the top, and then you could see
- 5:18people with the Red Sox and Rays over the Jays for sure.
- 5:22So yeah, I think AJ Hinch would have gotten a strong look when
- 5:26the Tigers had a 1415 game lead, but they've got 6 head to head
- 5:31left against the Guardians and only 6 1/2 game lead.
- 5:34They're not out of the woods here.
- 5:37So yeah, I think it should be Schneider.
- 5:39And I will say this, we've we've gone back and forth so many
- 5:43times on this roller coaster that the American League
- 5:45especially, but the entire league this year has been any.
- 5:50I think even last week at this time I might have said, you
- 5:54know, nobody's a good bet in the American League to come out of
- 5:57the American League. But last week at this time I
- 5:59might have said I think maybe the Yankee might be the best
- 6:02bet. Well, now I would be back on the
- 6:04Jays. I think the Blue Jays are right
- 6:06now your best bet to come out of the American.
- 6:08Did you watch Trey Savages debut last night by chance?
- 6:11I did not get a chance to do that unfortunately.
- 6:14Mean what? A stock 5 innings, 9 strikeouts,
- 6:17gave up one earned run. He's got a, he's got a splitter
- 6:21that it's absolute incredible. This was a guy that started in
- 6:25April and has worked his way to the major leagues and he's going
- 6:28to have a spot in October. That it it's it's a fun rotation
- 6:33because the way Gossman is going right now, it's almost like
- 6:37prime Gossman and Bieber looks overall really, really good to
- 6:41get knocked around a little bit and I believe it's.
- 6:44Cincinnati. Which is funny, I just talked
- 6:48about them not hitting, but they have it's an interesting
- 6:53rotation there if you throw him in the rotation because you have
- 6:58decent choices for the third spot, but nobody that jumps that
- 7:01like you're not going to be excited about barrios staying
- 7:04your third starter. So that'd be cool to have like
- 7:08the the Wiley veterans, Gossman and Bieber in there.
- 7:10And then you throw the kid in there.
- 7:12That'd be, I mean somewhat similar since I always think
- 7:16back to the Cubs with the how Kate Horton is right in the mix
- 7:19there with with Matthew Boyd show to Imanaga.
- 7:22It might come down to Scherzer might lose the.
- 7:24Spot. And if that's the case, I mean,
- 7:27do you put Scherzer in the bullpen, though?
- 7:29No. Do you?
- 7:30I don't know if he, I don't know if he, he's one of those guys at
- 7:35his age who needs those extended warm ups.
- 7:38You know, like starting pitchers are used to their routine.
- 7:41But if he only, if he knows I only have to get 3 out, he could
- 7:46drop some of his secondary pitches and just go fastball
- 7:49with whatever secondary pitch he wants, just these two pitches
- 7:52and throw Pete like he used to throw it.
- 7:55As a starter. You can put your stuff play up.
- 7:58If you don't have to worry about getting through 5 or 6 in it,
- 8:01it's always possible that could transform him.
- 8:03And suddenly he gets back up into that 9596 range that he was
- 8:07a few years back. And I'm sold.
- 8:09And you need to, and you've been saying the Blue Jays need some
- 8:11help in that bullpen, not for a back end guy, but you know, 6
- 8:14inning guy, something like. That if you only want the kid to
- 8:19go 5 innings then you piggyback and those shows are for one or
- 8:22two. You mentioned the Mariners half
- 8:26game lead over the Astros and it happened again last night for
- 8:28yard on Alvarez. Oh my God, did you see that?
- 8:31Stepping on home plate. Of all things.
- 8:33Hideous, hideous looking ankle sprain they had had there.
- 8:37This guy's feels like he's made out of glass.
- 8:39And here's another one. Stepping on home plate, turning
- 8:41his ankle. He been swinging the bat well
- 8:44since he come back to that. Feels like a pretty big blow to
- 8:47the Astros. Do you see it the same way?
- 8:50Yes, I I know they won and they actually came back to win.
- 8:53When the Rangers had that 3-2 lead, just for a brief second I
- 8:57was like, here we go again. I still feel like the Astros are
- 9:00pretty well cooked. Maybe they make the playoffs,
- 9:03but it might be kind of as a sacrificial lamb.
- 9:06The way I view the Mets. Framer Valdez has just been
- 9:10awful. And one of the selling points
- 9:13for the Astros when you looked at them down the stretch was,
- 9:15hey, they could have a pair of aces and Hunter Brown and Framer
- 9:17Valdez. But Valdez isn't bad.
- 9:20I mean, their number 2 is. It's a Seinfeld references.
- 9:23Their number two star at this point is Jason Alexander.
- 9:27So yeah, I, I kind of feel like they're done.
- 9:30I, I would almost rather see the Rangers get in because if the
- 9:33Rangers get healthier, if they get, you know, get back to Corey
- 9:38Seeger, Adolis Garcia, Marcus Simeon to go with Wyatt
- 9:43Langford, who still has a lot more upside than he's flashed so
- 9:45far. Evan Carter, who still has a lot
- 9:46more upside than he's flashed so far.
- 9:49You asked me about the National League.
- 9:50If any of those teams could make noise, the the Rangers could
- 9:53make noise on the American League side.
- 9:56A lot of it will come down to how Jacob degrom holds up, but I
- 10:01feel like the Rangers could make noise.
- 10:03Yeah, I'm with you. It'd be great because I think
- 10:04this is probably, well, I'll ask you, is this it for Bochy?
- 10:10Gosh, I don't, I'm I'm not really familiar with manager
- 10:13contracts. Is it?
- 10:14I don't know if this. Is the last.
- 10:15He's just, he's just, he's old, right?
- 10:16And he's how long has he been doing it?
- 10:19It always seems like, and it's one of those things that I, I
- 10:22know he says he's not in pain, but when he walks out to get
- 10:24this. I feel like it's.
- 10:26Painful. The way his walk is like messed
- 10:28up, all those gears, all those surgeries and everything.
- 10:32I, I'd have to check on his contract, but my hunch is this
- 10:35is probably his last contract as as a manager in that he, he came
- 10:40back, he won a World Series with another team 4 World Series.
- 10:44You know, he, he's over 70 now. It might be time to ride under
- 10:48the sunset pretty soon. We were talking about that Blue
- 10:52Jays rotation, what it could look like.
- 10:54I want to go back to the Dodgers and what the rotation is going
- 10:57to look like. Otani has not been great by any
- 11:01means. He's been OK, but that's not
- 11:03what you think about Otani yet. He's Otani.
- 11:06So you go that direction. How do you cobble this thing
- 11:09together? And who gets the ball in game
- 11:11one at Dodger Stadium in that wild card round?
- 11:14I think you probably got to stay with Yamamoto.
- 11:17He's been the rock throughout this year.
- 11:19He's been the one who's avoided injury.
- 11:21He's been 8 like for most of the year.
- 11:23I think it has to be Yamamoto. And then after that, you're,
- 11:27you're looking at, you know, Glass now.
- 11:29Blake Snell I'm sure that they feel a tug toward Kershaw.
- 11:34I just am not prepared to and. He's not good in the playoffs.
- 11:38No, he's not in the playoffs. No, I, I, I, I don't feel like
- 11:43Ohtani as a reliever works with the logistics of having him be
- 11:47your DH and having him have to run down to the bullpen.
- 11:51So just from a logistics standpoint, it probably makes
- 11:54the most sense for them to have Ohtani be their 4th starter.
- 11:58And if they only wanted to go 3 or 4 innings and then they want
- 12:01Kershaw to piggyback him, it's a righty and then a lefty.
- 12:05So if they face A-Team that's heavy on platoons, you could get
- 12:08Otani through the order one time and then you could go Kershaw
- 12:10through the order one time before you go to your Bowl 10,
- 12:13maybe something like that. And and you can get Shane
- 12:15involved as well. But I think it has to be
- 12:18Yamamoto one and then probably Glass now 2 and Cell 3.
- 12:22When Palenci comes back and we think he's going to, what's
- 12:27council going to do with that closer spot because Kitcher just
- 12:30been lights out. I think he's going to leave
- 12:32Kittridge. They.
- 12:33Don't they almost have to? I I thought they would kick
- 12:36Keller back to the 9th but I think he realized he really
- 12:39likes Keller in the eighth very very much and Kittridge has
- 12:44handled the 9th OK. Field Bar has been so so so good
- 12:48since a few bad starts early in the season as well.
- 12:51My hunch is that Palencia has lost that closer job.
- 12:54So he's the 7th inning guy? I mean what about Seal Bar
- 12:58though? And I know Seal Bar and Pomerans
- 13:01are lefties. So then you have a lefty and
- 13:03righty. I think it's going to be Keller
- 13:05in the 8th and Kittridge in the 9th.
- 13:06And Palencia will be in the mix with Seal Bar and Pomerans
- 13:09depending on matchups in the thickness.
- 13:12That makes sense. Yep, that makes sense.
- 13:14And trying to massage Porter Hodge.
- 13:16And yeah, who's been good since he's that?
- 13:18That group as well, yes. As we say a lot, I'm a big
- 13:22Porter Foot Hodge fan. I still think there's something
- 13:24there out of him. Yeah, he's young.
- 13:26He's still only 24 years old. Ian Happ, he's been outstanding
- 13:29here recently for the team. Still searching for some other
- 13:33answers out there. Is there enough punch in this
- 13:36lineup to to make a run? Is there enough offensively to
- 13:39get him there? You're still holding out hope
- 13:42that you've got a week and a half left.
- 13:44Look, Pete Kerr, Armstrong hit a gargantuan home run last night,
- 13:48hit another ball to the wall. Maybe Pete's going to get
- 13:52lightning in a bottle again the way he did the first half.
- 13:55There's still hope for Tucker coming back, and he was hot
- 13:58right before injury. I just don't know on Saya
- 14:01Suzuki. It almost seems like the rest of
- 14:04the year is lost on Saya, but by by a seros has been hitting the
- 14:10ball pretty well since he came up.
- 14:13You know, and you just can't say enough about Nico harder and the
- 14:17type of a blue guy that he is for for this team overall, both
- 14:21offensively and defensively. And I I think that the shock has
- 14:25been good enough in the second-half.
- 14:26Like the Cubs line up is right now a polar opposite to somebody
- 14:31like the Yankees where they they need to get something out of the
- 14:35top half and they need Judge be on fire.
- 14:37Like, at this point, the Cubs lineup is so well-rounded
- 14:40they're just as likely to have a rally from the seven through 9
- 14:43spots as they are from the top of the order.
- 14:45So with when Suzuki does get back and I think he's day-to-day
- 14:49right now, I'm with you. I don't know how council pencils
- 14:54them into the line. So who DH is by Esteros?
- 14:57It can't be Castro. Well, he might straight platoon
- 15:01them because Pyoceros is left-handed.
- 15:03Suzuki is a righty. He might just straight platoon
- 15:06those two guys in the DH spot and see if you can get something
- 15:09from Suzuki against the lefties. IA big, big thing for me is as
- 15:16much as I said the lineup is well-rounded, I still think you
- 15:18got to get Tucker back and get him looking the way he did that
- 15:21last week and a half before he got hurt, because that's when
- 15:25he's a game changer. Let's talk about the teams that
- 15:29they're looking up at, and that's the Brewers, who I don't
- 15:32well, the right now, they don't have the best record in the
- 15:35National League, I don't think. I think they gave that up.
- 15:37I think it's the Phillies. But nonetheless, they're clearly
- 15:40a playoff team. Murphy's an unbelievable
- 15:42manager. Breweries are obviously a major,
- 15:45major threat, but behind the Phillies, would you say?
- 15:50I would take the Phillies over the Brewers right now.
- 15:53Yeah, and and I could see arguments for the Dodgers too if
- 15:56they get things together, even though it's like a 7 game gap in
- 16:00the standing. Look, the Brewers had a magical
- 16:03middle season run. They're 14 and 14 since that
- 16:07winning tree got snapped that, you know, teams can still flip
- 16:11the switch when they get to the postseason.
- 16:13I've been over, I've studied it so many times.
- 16:15When people say you get too hot in the regular season, that's
- 16:18bad. That's not true.
- 16:20If you're hot for the last month of the season, you run out of
- 16:23gas. That hasn't been proven to be
- 16:24true either there. It's all over the board.
- 16:26There's just no method to it. So the Brewers really well could
- 16:31click things back into gear of the playoffs and and maybe even
- 16:33run the table. But I think there's concern
- 16:38behind Freddy Peralta in the rotation now with Mesorowski and
- 16:42Woodruff. It looked like a month ago they
- 16:45might have 3 aces going into the postseason.
- 16:47But I just think there's so many question marks with those guys
- 16:50and the offense hasn't been nearly as consistent.
- 16:53And now there's those concerns of do they have enough slug?
- 16:57Because in the playoffs you're facing much better pitching,
- 16:59much better defense than in the regular season.
- 17:02And you've got to be able to hit the ball, the ballpark and, and,
- 17:05and I don't know if they have a line that can consistently do
- 17:07that. So I even with the the Wheeler
- 17:12injury for the Phillies, which is a big deal, I think the
- 17:14Phillies are the favorite of the National League side and maybe
- 17:18in the in the in the majors. I saw another Otani story
- 17:21yesterday about some real estate deal in Hawaii they were using
- 17:25as likeness and can he just get better people around him?
- 17:28I mean, we don't know much about him off the field, but boy, it
- 17:32just feels like there's always stories surrounding this guy.
- 17:35Yeah, and I don't know enough about it, which to your point,
- 17:38he doesn't let anybody see anything.
- 17:40So I have no idea, like if he just has the worst luck in the
- 17:43world or if he actually is involved in anything.
- 17:45My hunt is. He's not.
- 17:47Yeah, my hunt is. He's not.
- 17:50He seems, he seems like he just, he came to America, didn't know
- 17:54anybody, just wanted to be a great baseball player and then
- 17:57tried to figure it out from there.
- 17:59And that can be a recipe for disaster when you're so good at
- 18:02baseball but you don't know anybody.
- 18:04You're coming to a foreign country.
- 18:06And it seems like he's had some bad things happen to him along
- 18:11the way. Yeah, I don't buy the gambling
- 18:13stuff. I never will.
- 18:14I think he's guilty as hell, but that's just me.
- 18:17Anyway, I want to finish on this because it's just, it seemed
- 18:20like we were in the there was not too long ago that Mike Trout
- 18:25was on everybody's shortlist. So this guy's the face of
- 18:27baseball, you know, one of the best players, if not the best
- 18:29player in the league. dot dot, dot.
- 18:31This team's got to make the play.
- 18:32He's got to see the post season. He's going to be 35 next season,
- 18:36for crying out loud. He's going to hit 400 home runs.
- 18:39His next. I think he's won.
- 18:40I saw the weekend. He's won home run.
- 18:42Yeah, he's won away. So he'll get over 400.
- 18:46I mean, I'm, I'm not, I'm not denying the fact and you're a
- 18:49Hall of Fame voter, but I'm not so sure he's up first ballot at
- 18:52this point, is he? Yeah, he still is for me, no
- 18:56question. He he's he's becoming more of a
- 19:00peak candidate, which is to say for a 6-7 year stretch, he was
- 19:06the best player in baseball and he won three MVPS in there.
- 19:10Very few guys in the history of baseball were that good for that
- 19:14kind of a stretch and that means yes, good enough for me.
- 19:18But that's why it's a peak candidate because in terms of
- 19:22the counting stats, as you said, 399 home runs barely over 1000
- 19:27RBI right now 1000 twelve 1745 hits, so not even close to 2000
- 19:33hits yet 324 double S. So the counting stats for many
- 19:37people are not going to get there.
- 19:39He man, he, I think he's going to get in on his first ballot,
- 19:43but it's not going to be one of those overwhelming like 95%
- 19:48plus. Like a decent comparison is
- 19:50probably Ken Griffey junior. But in terms of being the peak
- 19:55candidate and everything but Junior still compiled 600 home
- 19:58runs. That's not going to get anywhere
- 20:00even close to that. Trout's probably not even going
- 20:03to get to 500, so. Maybe Junior was not a great
- 20:07comparison. I just thought like he had the
- 20:09great peak when everybody said he's going to be the best player
- 20:11ever and then he was so injury plagued.
- 20:13Well, he had the best swing ever.
- 20:15No beautiful. Yeah, yeah, because he's
- 20:18left-handed man, he's true. Have the.
- 20:20Best player you can go. Matt Snyder talks baseball with
- 20:23Trenton I every single week and does so right through the World
- 20:25Series. He's on the road at the at the
- 20:28World Series games and he'll join us then.
- 20:30Matt, thanks, brother. Appreciate it as always.
- 20:32Have a great week. CBSSports.com for Matt Snyder.
- 20:35Matt, thank you. All right, take care.
- 20:38Good to talk to you, buddy. Matt Snyder on baseball.
- 20:40So this from a friend of mine. Suzuki was on the bench last
- 20:43night. Apparently, Taylor McGregor was
- 20:45asked at some point during the broadcast about Kyle Tucker and
- 20:48her response is, according to the Cubs, Tucker is not
- 20:51progressing like they had hoped. Oh, no.
- 20:54Oh no. So don't know what that means.
- 20:58Maybe they'd hoped he was going to be back tomorrow.
- 20:59Maybe that means he'd be back Saturday.
- 21:01I don't read it that way. I think that's probably more so
- 21:04on the Oh no scale that you were went to immediately.
- 21:06That's and he finally felt, now I understand two of those games
- 21:11were against Colorado, but he was heating up.
- 21:13It felt like, OK, maybe. And then to the IL and then he'd
- 21:18hear that. I I didn't see Armstrong's home
- 21:21run last night. Apparently, as as Matt said,
- 21:23went went a long. Way I just saw the highlight.
- 21:25Yeah, I didn't see it. I like Cap.
- 21:27I like PCA. Obviously.
- 21:29He's next home run. He'll put him at the 3030 club.
- 21:3230 stolen bases, 30 home runs. Nico Horner's the MVP.
- 21:36Michael Bush is. Not a whole lot of pop there.
- 21:40No, but there can be. He's got his moments, but Carlos
- 21:43Santana is a wastes of roster spot.
- 21:46So is Justin Turner, although he does organize the team meals.
- 21:49We found out and that's why he's.
- 21:51Anyways, it's 125, Trent and I talking sports with you.
- 21:54Appreciate you being with us. We'll come back after these.
- 21:57It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 21:59I'm Miller Kahn. They just passed 1:30 on a
- 22:01Tuesday. Trent's Plays of the Day, Circus
- 22:04Sports sponsor those. By the way, if you're a Circa
- 22:07customer and you've downloaded their app, you will need to do
- 22:12so again at the I think it's September 30th is the day that
- 22:17the new app in the state of Iowa goes live.
- 22:19We've been asking for it for months, years.
- 22:23It's ready and it will be rolled out on September the 30th, so
- 22:28everybody will need to re download the app, go back and
- 22:31visit the App Store and check out the new app that Circa will
- 22:35unveil on the 30th of September. Trent will unveil his plays of
- 22:39the day coming up in about 20 minutes.
- 22:41Baseball tonight. The WNBA playoffs are going on,
- 22:44are they not they? Are you're asking their own?
- 22:46I think they are pretty sure they are.
- 22:48No, there, I did see a game, one that happened on Sunday, Yeah.
- 22:53It's just it's not the same. I guess.
- 22:56I found out I'm not a fan of the WNBA.
- 22:58I'm a fan of Caitlin Clark as I think I speak for a lot of
- 23:01people. The FIFA lost their first game
- 23:03by 12. Right.
- 23:05And then the officiating was the story apparently, as it's been
- 23:08every game, regardless of who's playing.
- 23:10It's just it's embarrassing for that league.
- 23:12All right, enough about that. I want to go back to the NFL
- 23:15because that moves the needle. Yes.
- 23:17And one of our better direction to go right And one of our NFL
- 23:20teams is the Minnesota Vikings, who I think are perhaps in a
- 23:26difficult spot. And when I say that I it's all
- 23:28pursuant on Carson Wentz looking like the player that in the past
- 23:33he has at times. I mean, this will be the sixth
- 23:36team in six years he's about to start for.
- 23:39Think about that. Took got the Eagles as far as he
- 23:44could before he got hurt and obviously was out for the year
- 23:46and they won a Super Bowl with Nick Foles, took the God
- 23:49forsaken Colts and got them to the play offs, right.
- 23:53And that I think was, you know, a feather in his cap.
- 23:56So what if he can play? Because look what we've seen
- 23:59with Kevin O'Connell. And maybe for the first time
- 24:03ever, he hasn't been the quarterback whisper.
- 24:06He hasn't been able to just take anybody and make them an NFL
- 24:08quarterback because McCarthy does not look good.
- 24:11And I look like I'm going to be wrong on this one.
- 24:13Seven quarters been awful, one quarters been good.
- 24:16But what if Wentz plays well? What do they do?
- 24:19That's an interesting one and the way this plays out because
- 24:22we've seen it before with Dobbs, with Mullins, with Jaron Hall.
- 24:26Jaron. Hall of, of course, Darnald last
- 24:29year and what we saw out of him. I think you bring up a good
- 24:32point on Wentz. I don't know why it went so
- 24:36South in Philadelphia. It was just maybe it's that fan
- 24:40base. Whatever it was, it was odd the
- 24:43way that that and it turned quickly, didn't it?
- 24:46He went from finishing second in the MVP voting to I forgot.
- 24:49About that part of it, yeah. Taking a step back, injury
- 24:53started to hit him a little bit. He was comeback player of the
- 24:56year. Then after he got over those
- 24:57injuries, still they were only nine and seven and here he is
- 25:01today, still can play you would think at a decent.
- 25:04Level. He's 32 years old or 33?
- 25:06How old is he? Early 30s.
- 25:09Let's play that out. He plays well.
- 25:11He plays well, but maybe more importantly, they're also
- 25:14winning games, starting this week against Cincinnati and
- 25:18it's. With Jake Browning, who's decent
- 25:20backup. Or decent backup and he wasn't
- 25:22great on Sunday, but he's shown that he can be OK.
- 25:25And a former Viking. So there'll be that little thing
- 25:27going for Browning. Then they go across the pond for
- 25:30two. The first one in Dublin, not
- 25:34sure. OK.
- 25:35Which one's which? But yes, Pittsburgh is the first
- 25:38game and then it's the Browns after that.
- 25:40Then they have the bye week. Just in this instance they go
- 25:43three and oh, OK, it's pretty simple, isn't it?
- 25:46I. Think you say you never lose
- 25:48your spot to injure? Well, that's BS, yeah.
- 25:49Wally Pip two and one if you go 2 and one.
- 25:55Is JJ McCarthy better to play or better to watch?
- 25:58They watched all last year. Yeah.
- 26:03I mean, you get another red shirt year that become.
- 26:07I think it just comes down to how Wentz plays.
- 26:10If he goes in there and shows that he can play at a high
- 26:13level, you have to go with him. Or do you give him a chance?
- 26:16Because we'll take it a step further.
- 26:19Darrisaw's back, Kelly is back the offensive line, and it was
- 26:23awful on Sunday night. It was terrible.
- 26:25But all of a sudden they've got a competent offensive line.
- 26:29Do you give McCarthy one more chance behind that line because
- 26:32he was running for his life? Oh boy, that's tough.
- 26:35I think it comes down to once. I think that's what I don't
- 26:38think this is AJJ McCarthy decision.
- 26:40I believe that this is a Carson Wentz decision.
- 26:43And if he goes in there and looks good, plays OK, you just
- 26:45roll with him and he keep going with the veteran because KOC has
- 26:48shown he's good with veteran quarterbacks.
- 26:50So guys that have a little experience hasn't worked to this
- 26:53point with the young guy, right? That's how I would go.
- 26:56Because when when you watch the Vikings, do you see a playoff
- 27:00team still? I mean, have you the first
- 27:04because you saw him against the Bears and we saw every play in
- 27:06that game. You, I'm guessing you watch most
- 27:08of Sunday Night Football. We've seen eight quarters of the
- 27:11of the Vikings uninterrupted because they were both prime
- 27:15time games. Do you feel like you're looking
- 27:17at a like a playoff team two weeks in?
- 27:20No, because I think there's also depth in the NFC.
- 27:24More so. The Rams, I was ready all right.
- 27:28The back injury to staff for this is going to be another two
- 27:29of them and the Cardinals. It's been 3 teams in that
- 27:32division, two and. All the 49ers are doing it.
- 27:35And Matt Jones, he could be a revelation, maybe at that spot.
- 27:38Although Ferdie's not losing his gig.
- 27:39And Speaking of quarterback whispers, Shanahan's done a
- 27:42pretty good job you. Know I don't.
- 27:44Where do the Vikings get darted last year from?
- 27:46You know, after some tutelage with Shanahan, Tampa's not going
- 27:50anywhere. Nope.
- 27:51Atlanta looks improved at minimum on the defensive line
- 27:54and Tenex I think is OK. Yep, the Lions.
- 27:57Their demise was greatly exaggerated.
- 27:58Yes, it was. That team's still pretty good.
- 28:01Packers are elite I think. Eagles commanders both in good
- 28:05shape. Even if Daniels doesn't go this
- 28:08week, Mariota has been excellent.
- 28:10He's been OK. Yeah, Yeah.
- 28:12Completed 75% of his. Passes.
- 28:13I know, I know. He was.
- 28:15That system fits him. Cowboys are going to score with
- 28:17everybody. They're going to win 789 games
- 28:20because they're going to score 30 plus seemingly every time
- 28:24out. So there is some depth there
- 28:26though, like there's tiers like you just start.
- 28:28They're not all in the same bucket.
- 28:29There's the Eagles and the Packers on tier one and then I
- 28:33would put the Buccaneers you. Put the Rams there.
- 28:39Not I like the Rams this week. If it's the Eagles, do you?
- 28:43I do. How many points are you getting?
- 28:45Where's the game in Philly? It's in Philly in the early when
- 28:50you're getting north of a field goal, 3 1/2 like that, hook in
- 28:54there like that, like. That better?
- 28:56Like that hook and after what happened a year ago and having
- 28:58them in the ropes in the NFC Championship.
- 29:00They absolutely had them. The other backup quarterbacks
- 29:04Browning we talked about he's for a backup bet in the system a
- 29:08long time. You're feeling OK with all those
- 29:10weapons that he's going to be all right met you Mariota.
- 29:14I I think it makes sense to give Daniels if it if it's just going
- 29:17to be a week and it's going to help him have that week off.
- 29:20You're feeling good about that one, Matt.
- 29:24Matt Jones was OK. He was all right.
- 29:27Now I didn't see it you did you watch some of the Saints game?
- 29:30Yeah, Red zone. Red zone, OK.
- 29:33Yeah. And yeah, he looked OK as he go
- 29:36through it, he kind of looked at these injuries.
- 29:39Tyrod Taylor that. How old is he now?
- 29:42Great question. Tyrod Taylor, how many times?
- 29:46Has he played for? 36 Oh I.
- 29:49Bet he's older than that. Let's see what old tie rod's up
- 29:53to these days. He's 36.
- 29:54Well done. Oh, look at that.
- 29:55Nailed that one. How many teams?
- 30:01Baltimore, Buffalo, Cleveland Chargers, Houston Giants, Jets.
- 30:06Seems like they're missing a couple.
- 30:08Yeah, what if there was some practice squads in there and
- 30:10things like that adding up to that tally?
- 30:13But he's perfectly fine. I mean him in comparison to
- 30:16Justin Fields, is there a big gap there?
- 30:18It's kind of a weird injury week because, yes, losing Joe, bro,
- 30:22it's nothing that you want, but because you have somebody that's
- 30:24shown that can be OK in that backup role.
- 30:27These injuries are all important.
- 30:28Yet it's not as crazy as it is. Are backup quarterbacks getting
- 30:33better? Maybe, Yeah, teams just
- 30:36understanding. I like your backup quarterback.
- 30:39I like Pageant. I think he's OK.
- 30:43I'm not saying he's going to Canton or he's going to lead the
- 30:45team to a Super Bowl, but I think he's OK.
- 30:48You're ready to pull the plug on Caleb.
- 30:50Well, I should be asking you this question.
- 30:52I'm I'm not, but I was never I was never a believer in the get
- 30:56go well. Let's let's go back and look at
- 30:58the five that were taken in that draft.
- 31:00Yes, six that were taken in that draft in the 1st 12 picks,
- 31:02right? Six.
- 31:03It went Williams, Daniels, May, Pennix, McCarthy and Bo Nicks.
- 31:14Where's Williams on that? Of the six at this point is
- 31:17Daniel's #1 Daniel's clearly number one.
- 31:20Who's number two? Number two, it's Bo Nicks at
- 31:23this point. He's proven the most.
- 31:26I think I'd still take Pennex. I'd probably still take Caleb.
- 31:31You would. Just because of the upside
- 31:33that's still there. After that, then he'd get into
- 31:36Nick's. Drake may knock right on Sunday,
- 31:39no. Had a good rookie year.
- 31:41Good rookie year? Yeah, absolutely.
- 31:44And JJ is at the bottom of the list.
- 31:46I think so at this point, yeah. I mean the every, every great
- 31:49quarterback class has a Ken O'Brien.
- 31:52Who was it? He just didn't measure up to the
- 31:55rest of that class right? Kelly, Marino and El we were
- 31:58pretty good. That's difficult to swallow when
- 32:01you're in that group. And Todd Blackledge was in that.
- 32:04Group. He's at Penn State, right?
- 32:06Yeah. He's a he's a hell of an
- 32:07analyst. Spencer Bradler went in that
- 32:09draft. Would you put him over JJ
- 32:11McCarthy? What was what was he?
- 32:14It wasn't the first round. 5th rounder.
- 32:17No, yeah, no, I mean, we've seen seven quarters, Trent.
- 32:24They've been not good, really bad, not good, mediocre at best,
- 32:30being kind, One good quarter. He looked, he looked.
- 32:34Lost. Yes, he did on Sunday night.
- 32:36Now, like we both said, we both like Atlanta.
- 32:38I think they're a decent team. All right, Trents got some plays
- 32:41of the day. Back to baseball we go.
- 32:43I might jump into the WM. Ohk didn't even know what's
- 32:47going on a second ago. Well, you got time during.
- 32:50The break, there's still, there's something winking at me
- 32:52when I when you mentioned that, there was a line that jumped out
- 32:55to me so well, I got a little time for some reason.
- 32:57Pitching matchups that should jump.
- 32:59On oh how good is. Kate Horton versus Paul skins.
- 33:02What time is that? 5. 40 Oh yeah, the Pittsburgh
- 33:06the early 540 first pitch. You know, I've, I've never been
- 33:10to Pittsburgh and really had no desire.
- 33:12Oh, you're missing out. Cool city.
- 33:14I am too, right? And I think that ballpark, the
- 33:16ballpark is great. I got it.
- 33:18I mean, look the the the backdrop.
- 33:21The downtown area looks spectacular.
- 33:24We went there, flew in the 2009 Iowa Penn State game, flew into
- 33:28Pittsburgh, rented a car. Is Franco Harrison the statue in
- 33:32the airport? It is.
- 33:32Right when you walk in, yeah, it's one of the first things
- 33:34that you see. Yeah, Immaculate reception.
- 33:36Yeah. And the ballpark is incredible.
- 33:39You mentioned the backdrop, which is stunning.
- 33:41As beautiful as you're going to find in all of baseball.
- 33:45Plus the city. It's your kind of city, really.
- 33:47You would enjoy it. Yeah.
- 33:48A little more rugged. Yeah.
- 33:50Well, yeah, a lot more blue collar.
- 33:53Yeah. I like it.
- 33:54We hopped up and down the bars after the ball game, hung out in
- 33:58the head of the downtown area. Yingling.
- 34:00Right? No.
- 34:00Absolutely. Sucked down a lot of those.
- 34:02Then got on the car. In the car at 4:00 AM.
- 34:04Well done. And they made our way to State
- 34:06College. And then it was a full day of
- 34:08tailgating after that. How old were you?
- 34:10Oh, 2029, you were. You were able to do that back in
- 34:15the. Day put it in the fun meter.
- 34:16Right. Yeah, you did.
- 34:17All right. The plays of the day are next,
- 34:19but Horton versus Skeens, Sale versus McKenzie, Gore's not bad.
- 34:24Gilbert Waka. Zebby Matthews against
- 34:27Schlitter. OK.
- 34:31By the way, your dude with three names, Sean.
- 34:33Oh, Simeon Woods Richardson. Do you know how?
- 34:35He got to the Jays. I mean, he got to the Twins from
- 34:38the Jays. He's Jose Barrios.
- 34:40Yes, I do remember. That I did not.
- 34:41Because he had a good season last year for the beginning of
- 34:44the year, kind of helped them together and kept them in
- 34:46contention for a long while, then kind of hit the skids for a
- 34:49bit. But he wasn't the main piece of
- 34:51that trade. The shortstop was right.
- 34:53The Vanderbilt kid Austin Martin, is that his name?
- 34:56Who is terribly average? Is he?
- 34:58Yeah, and he was a top ten pick out of Vanderbilt.
- 35:02All right, Millory Condon back to wrap up a Tuesday.
- 35:04By the way, tomorrow, David Kaplan will be here.
- 35:06That should be spirited. Boy, he was pissed at the Bears.
- 35:09Should be. Absolutely.
- 35:10It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 35:13Hi, Millory Condon, welcome back.
- 35:14Iowa Sports Radio Network flagship at Des Moines Sports
- 35:18Station One O 6.3 KX&O trends, plays of the day, circus sports
- 35:25sponsor those if you missed it, Circa's new app will be unveiled
- 35:29coming up on September the 30th. If you are a Circa customer, you
- 35:33will need to go to the App Store and download the app once again
- 35:37on that date. It'll be brand new and some of
- 35:39the bells and whistles that while it's been lacking since
- 35:42we've had it, they will be in play.
- 35:45It's open up a whole lot more avenues similar to some of the
- 35:47other sports betting operators that are already in that space.
- 35:51So that's coming up on the 30th of September.
- 35:55Your money will transfer etcetera, but you do need to re
- 35:58sign up at Circa sports. All right, Trent baseball
- 36:01tonight full slate. There's actually already a game
- 36:04going on a split doubleheader Atlanta, Washington to non
- 36:08playoff teams, but there is some games going on right now.
- 36:11Other than that, a full slate tonight.
- 36:13What are you doing? We got 4 baseball plays and one
- 36:16in the WNBAI mentioned it. That one winking at me.
- 36:18Seattle got blown out and they kind of were taking on oil at
- 36:21the end of the season. I think we're going to see be a
- 36:23little bit late out of Lloyd and company.
- 36:25I'm going to grab the five points you're getting at home
- 36:27tonight against Las Vegas. That is the nightcap this
- 36:31evening. 4 plays in baseball. We start in New York with the
- 36:35Mets playing host to the Padres. It's King coming back off.
- 36:39He's had a couple of starts since he's come back.
- 36:42I just wonder if maybe the win from the Mets gets him back in
- 36:46the right state, you just said. Clay Holmes has been so bad.
- 36:49He has been don't like either side of this one.
- 36:52I think just the momentum for the Mets here.
- 36:54Just finally, any that leads losing.
- 36:56They lose nine in a row I think. Yeah, eight or nine, yeah -118
- 37:01on them going against your Jays, you know, I'm not a big burritos
- 37:03guy. And it's the other side.
- 37:05It's people who I do like. I'll lay the -107 in the minor
- 37:09league ballpark. Give me Tampa with pick #2 to #3
- 37:12free square. Wasn't last night.
- 37:14Thank God I didn't bet on it. Zebby Matthews against Schlitter
- 37:17and the Yankees. I'll leave the -155 in that one.
- 37:21And then night late tonight, Ohtani, I'm not seeing it.
- 37:24How about this match up though? CNA's, Dodgers and a likely
- 37:29preview of the NLCS. I don't buy your Dodgers.
- 37:33I just don't think they have that switch.
- 37:35I like the Phillies. So you're going to take the
- 37:37Brewers in them in a series? No, I'll take the Dodgers.
- 37:40Yeah, probably. And that will set up likely
- 37:44Phillies against the Dodgers. Oh, that'd be a great series.
