- 0:04Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time, a wave original.
- 0:10Speaker 1: My name is Bomani Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:12Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:17Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:19Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:22Speaker 1: a hater. I realized I went on a vacation and
- 0:25Speaker 1: didn't tell y'all I was going to go on a vacation. Oops,
- 0:29Speaker 1: my bad. I also realized, Ryan, it dawned on me
- 0:34Speaker 1: that I'm surprised that people didn't call us out on
- 0:36Speaker 1: this a whole lot sooner. Shohei Otani from Japan, but
- 0:41Speaker 1: he made our top 25 list. And all I have
- 0:43Speaker 1: to say to the people on that one is... Oops. Whoops. Yeah.
- 0:48Speaker 2: That's what I would like to call a big oopsie daisy.
- 0:51Speaker 1: That was a giant big oops.
- 0:52Speaker 2: My end.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Oh, no. It was everybody's oops. You know what? In
- 0:56Speaker 1: the end, we were able to whittle off.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Baseball is America's pastime. Bingo.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Bingo. That's what I'm going with. And we were able
- 1:03Speaker 1: to whittle off enough of those basketball players to make
- 1:05Speaker 1: it possible that we could actually put together a list.
- 1:08Speaker 1: That was all it came down to.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Correct.
- 1:10Speaker 1: That was it.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:11Speaker 1: Shohei Otani. Konichiwa, homie. It's like you're one of us.
- 1:15Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? And Whitney involved in some
- 1:18Speaker 1: kind of housing discrimination.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Yeah. And a gambling scandal.
- 1:21Speaker 1: USA.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Doesn't get more American than that.
- 1:23Speaker 1: USA. You know what I'm saying? Anyway, I got back
- 1:27Speaker 1: from my trip. And while I was gone, I generally
- 1:33Speaker 1: now do my best to stay off the socials for
- 1:35Speaker 1: reasons that I've told you all, which is very simple,
- 1:37Speaker 1: aside from the fact that it's generally toxic. It's specifically
- 1:40Speaker 1: become mean to me in a way that I don't
- 1:42Speaker 1: find enjoyable anymore. Right. I got to be a little
- 1:45Speaker 1: bit too big to be out here just slamming people
- 1:47Speaker 1: down every week. Therefore, all it is is people being
- 1:50Speaker 1: mean and there's no sport in that for you, boy.
- 1:53Speaker 1: But every now and then I kind of drop in
- 1:55Speaker 1: just to get a handle on what y'all talking about
- 1:56Speaker 1: so I could do for work. And I come to
- 1:59Speaker 1: find out that everybody was real hot to try. about
- 2:03Speaker 1: this Netflix docuseries on the Dallas Cowboys. I saw people
- 2:09Speaker 1: who were making the comparison between that and The Last
- 2:13Speaker 1: Dance and saying that this was a better documentary than
- 2:16Speaker 1: The Last Dance. And I thought that that was an
- 2:19Speaker 1: interesting point of comparison because I don't have the greatest
- 2:22Speaker 1: handle on how good people thought The Last Dance was. Like,
- 2:28Speaker 1: I mean, look, when it came out five years ago,
- 2:32Speaker 1: last dance was the greatest thing to ever happen because
- 2:35Speaker 1: man we was just stuck in there without shit to
- 2:37Speaker 1: do remember that y'all was waking up in the morning
- 2:38Speaker 1: watching korean baseball like we was all struggling we was
- 2:42Speaker 1: on this show talking about the last dance like it
- 2:44Speaker 1: was the playoffs like it was it was what we
- 2:47Speaker 1: had to do it was it was it was what
- 2:49Speaker 1: was cracking it was what there was to talk about
- 2:51Speaker 1: but i did think the last dance was very good
- 2:55Speaker 1: for a number of reasons um And if you guys
- 2:59Speaker 1: said that it was comparable to that, then I was like, okay, cool.
- 3:03Speaker 1: I'm gonna come in and I'm gonna check it out.
- 3:06Speaker 1: And so I watched all of it between a couple
- 3:09Speaker 1: of days. I found it to be very entertaining, but
- 3:15Speaker 1: I think I found it to be as noteworthy for
- 3:20Speaker 1: what was in it as it was for what was
- 3:25Speaker 1: not in it. If you have not seen the docuseries,
- 3:31Speaker 1: obviously you're going to have plenty of time. I don't
- 3:34Speaker 1: know how much there is that I'm going to say
- 3:36Speaker 1: here that is a spoiler because the thing is about history. Man,
- 3:40Speaker 1: I had an eyelash go in my eye while I
- 3:42Speaker 1: was doing the show. Boy, that was tough. I'm glad I,
- 3:44Speaker 1: oh boy. Anyway, I can't really spoil stuff that's been
- 3:51Speaker 1: public for like 30 something years. I don't know how
- 3:55Speaker 1: much that was in that documentary that honestly has not
- 3:59Speaker 1: been known by people. I think that in some of
- 4:02Speaker 1: the responses that I saw to the film, I was
- 4:05Speaker 1: a little surprised at some of the things that people
- 4:08Speaker 1: did not know. But I mean, between the Miami Hurricanes
- 4:13Speaker 1: and the Dallas Cowboys, I've read enough books and stuff
- 4:17Speaker 1: that I got to forget that not everybody cares that
- 4:20Speaker 1: much and does that. Anyway. I want to start with
- 4:24Speaker 1: the most striking thing about this, which is this is
- 4:27Speaker 1: not a docuseries about the Dallas Cowboys. This was a
- 4:32Speaker 1: docu-series about Jerry Jones, which is in part why I'm
- 4:37Speaker 1: a little bit surprised by how much people really like
- 4:41Speaker 1: this as a docu-series because this is about Jerry Jones.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Like how much goddamn time did you need to give
- 4:48Speaker 1: me about Jerry Jones and his lawsuits against the NFL
- 4:53Speaker 1: so that Pepsi could be the official sponsor of the
- 4:56Speaker 1: Dallas Cowboys and Nike could be an official sponsor of
- 5:00Speaker 1: the Dallas Cowboys. I don't care. Like, do you care?
- 5:06Speaker 1: I'm not saying those things don't matter, right? I mean,
- 5:10Speaker 1: like in terms of a larger picture of like how
- 5:12Speaker 1: the league has changed and everything else, I'm not saying
- 5:15Speaker 1: those things don't matter. I'm saying those things only matter
- 5:18Speaker 1: in the context of Jerry Jones. And I don't care
- 5:21Speaker 1: that much about Jerry Jones. Like I don't care about
- 5:23Speaker 1: Jerry Jones as a main character. I care about Jerry
- 5:27Speaker 1: Jones as a person who is part of this larger,
- 5:30Speaker 1: historically significant story. But even the title of it, what
- 5:34Speaker 1: is it? Uh, American Gambler. Yeah, the American's team, the
- 5:40Speaker 1: Gambler and his Cowboys. The word Dallas ain't even in it. Right?
- 5:47Speaker 1: The Gambler and his Cowboys. And I, as somebody who
- 5:52Speaker 1: finds Jerry Jones interesting, right? I don't, I didn't show
- 5:57Speaker 1: up wanting to watch eight episodes about Jerry Jones. But anyway,
- 6:01Speaker 1: what I found to be interesting to off the rip
- 6:06Speaker 1: To me, a docu-series or a documentary like this needed
- 6:13Speaker 1: to start with the building of the legend of the
- 6:17Speaker 1: Dallas Cowboys, okay? Some black and white footage of when
- 6:23Speaker 1: they were awarded the team, some grainy footage of them
- 6:27Speaker 1: playing back when they used to play at the Cotton
- 6:29Speaker 1: Bowl and all of that stuff. Think about this for
- 6:33Speaker 1: a second. This is ostensibly a docu-series about the Dallas Cowboys,
- 6:39Speaker 1: and I don't recall anything in it about the Ice Bowl.
- 6:42Speaker 1: I don't recall anything specific about Roger Staubach. I don't
- 6:48Speaker 1: recall anything specific about Tony Dorsett. Any of these things.
- 6:55Speaker 1: That's crazy talk to me. Right. Like like like to me,
- 6:59Speaker 1: that is outright insanity, because what I didn't come away
- 7:03Speaker 1: from it with an understanding of. And these are like
- 7:05Speaker 1: notes that I would give if I work with Netflix is.
- 7:08Speaker 1: So why did Jerry care that much about buying the
- 7:10Speaker 1: Dallas Cowboys in the first place? Now, also, this is
- 7:13Speaker 1: a larger complaint that I have about Netflix documentaries, if
- 7:16Speaker 1: you want to be honest about it, that I don't
- 7:18Speaker 1: think they give typically enough background. It is it's done
- 7:22Speaker 1: with the sensibilities of a tech company, which is to
- 7:23Speaker 1: say the past doesn't matter. Right. Like this is this.
- 7:27Speaker 1: That is how I feel when I watch this. All
- 7:29Speaker 1: those Netflix untold joints, the majority of which are boo boo.
- 7:35Speaker 1: It's the same kind of thing.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Right.
- 7:37Speaker 1: But anyway, to me, you need to explain to me
- 7:40Speaker 1: how like what this was. This was America's team. OK,
- 7:44Speaker 1: the Cowboys have won three Super Bowls and been to
- 7:47Speaker 1: three Super Bowls with Jerry Jones. The Cowboys had been
- 7:49Speaker 1: to five Super Bowls before Jerry Jones showed up. They
- 7:53Speaker 1: had those three years or it may even been two,
- 7:56Speaker 1: but they had those years where they were not good
- 7:58Speaker 1: right before Jerry bought the team and fired Tom Landry,
- 8:01Speaker 1: which was the right move to make. What nobody ever
- 8:04Speaker 1: said explicitly that blew my mind is one of the
- 8:06Speaker 1: more amazing factoids. The Cowboys had a winning record for
- 8:11Speaker 1: 20 years in a row. 20 years in a row.
- 8:18Speaker 1: You get into the actual documentary and you start going
- 8:21Speaker 1: through all the things about the 1990s Cowboys. And of course,
- 8:24Speaker 1: you get to the White House and all the dope
- 8:26Speaker 1: and all that stuff and all the trouble they were
- 8:28Speaker 1: getting into. Hey, man. The Cowboys were doing that in
- 8:31Speaker 1: the 70s too. Like, I don't know how many young
- 8:34Speaker 1: people who would watch that have an understanding that with
- 8:37Speaker 1: Jerry Jones and what they had going in the 90s
- 8:39Speaker 1: was actually a continuation of the lineage of the franchise
- 8:43Speaker 1: in a lot of ways. Like, there were, to me,
- 8:46Speaker 1: could have been a whole episode, a very fascinating episode
- 8:49Speaker 1: of the dichotomy between the deification of Tom Landry and
- 8:54Speaker 1: the man Tom Landry was versus the team that he had, right?
- 8:59Speaker 1: And where the similarities are truly between he and Jimmy
- 9:01Speaker 1: Johnson were personality type and disposition and demeanor. They were
- 9:05Speaker 1: absolutely and totally different. But in the end, can you
- 9:08Speaker 1: play football circle? Yes or no. Being the only thing
- 9:11Speaker 1: that really mattered was where both of them came from. Right.
- 9:14Speaker 1: These are things that I personally find to be very
- 9:17Speaker 1: interesting with what we're, you know, for what we're talking about. Right.
- 9:21Speaker 1: I didn't really do that because that's not about Jerry.
- 9:28Speaker 2: It's not.
- 9:29Speaker 1: And hey, I want to also make the point. I
- 9:32Speaker 1: find it very interesting what the circumstances were under which
- 9:35Speaker 1: Jerry bought the team. I had forgotten what a bit
- 9:39Speaker 1: of a clown he was seen as off the rip
- 9:42Speaker 1: for buying that team and what he did with Tom
- 9:44Speaker 1: Landry and with Tech Schramm and all of those guys, right?
- 9:48Speaker 1: I think there was something to be said about building
- 9:50Speaker 1: us up a world before Jerry Jones in our public
- 9:54Speaker 1: consciousness existed. I also want to stop and take a
- 9:58Speaker 1: moment to point out that i as a texan in
- 10:02Speaker 1: general and a houstonian in specific think that you people
- 10:07Speaker 1: from dallas i don't even know what y'all are called
- 10:10Speaker 1: to be honest what is it dallasites i got no
- 10:13Speaker 1: idea what they call y'all y'all just people from dallas
- 10:16Speaker 1: as far as i'm concerned Y'all got a lot of
- 10:19Speaker 1: nerve to be out here calling people country. You know
- 10:22Speaker 1: what I'm saying? And look, I know Jerry from Arkansas,
- 10:25Speaker 1: and I'm not saying Dallas is Arkansas, but I am
- 10:28Speaker 1: saying Dallas is Dallas. And y'all got some nerve to
- 10:30Speaker 1: be out here. Oh, man, this country bulking has come
- 10:33Speaker 1: to Dallas, the big old... Bruh. Bruh. Bruh. Get out
- 10:43Speaker 1: of here. Get out of here. Y'all are still a
- 10:46Speaker 1: bunch of people from Dallas. Don't you ever forget it.
- 10:50Speaker 1: But anyway. Ryan, I remember this. These are moments where
- 10:54Speaker 1: I realized that you were a very young lad when
- 10:58Speaker 1: this Cowboys thing was going on. I don't even know
- 11:00Speaker 1: how much contemporaneous recollection you have of these teams.
- 11:03Speaker 2: I don't remember any of the Super Bowls.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Oh.
- 11:06Speaker 2: So, yeah, I'm just– the Cowboys– the 90s run of
- 11:10Speaker 2: the Cowboys is right before my fandom really starts.
- 11:13Speaker 1: Okay.
- 11:13Speaker 2: Before I started getting into sports.
- 11:15Speaker 1: So what I found– I don't know what the right
- 11:18Speaker 1: word is, but what I found to be interesting in
- 11:21Speaker 1: watching that was the recollection of what a big deal
- 11:24Speaker 1: a team used to be able to be.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Yes. Right.
- 11:27Speaker 1: I think the last one that we truly had in
- 11:29Speaker 1: sports that really landed like that were those Kevin Durant
- 11:33Speaker 1: warriors like that run of things. Right. Right. But we
- 11:37Speaker 1: had like the Shaq and Kobe Lakers be a great example. Obviously,
- 11:40Speaker 1: the LeBron James Miami Heat just totally dominated everything that
- 11:45Speaker 1: we saw for that time period. The Patriots in a way,
- 11:48Speaker 1: but they were just so wholly uninteresting.
- 11:51Speaker 2: And that was also very much too, it was all
- 11:54Speaker 2: Belichick and Brady. It wasn't a collection of pieces the
- 11:57Speaker 2: way the Cowboys were.
- 11:58Speaker 1: This Cowboys thing was different, man. Like it was different.
- 12:02Speaker 1: And also, I think the documentary pointed out something that
- 12:04Speaker 1: is interesting that is not the same about those Patriots.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Those Patriots came out of nowhere.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Right.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Right. We thought they were going to be terrible. They
- 12:12Speaker 1: won a Super Bowl. They stayed good for 20 years.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Those Cowboys were terrible in 89, surprisingly much better in 90,
- 12:22Speaker 1: won a playoff game in 91, then won the Super
- 12:25Speaker 1: Bowl in 92 and 93. But it was a build.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Like there were things that were going on that were
- 12:31Speaker 1: not in that documentary that I find to be a
- 12:33Speaker 1: bit surprising. For example.
- 12:35Speaker 2: The Steve Walsh stuff?
- 12:37Speaker 1: Bingo. That's the biggest one to me that I'm surprised
- 12:41Speaker 1: they did not do more of. So for people who
- 12:43Speaker 1: don't know, Steve Walsh was Jimmy's quarterback at Miami after
- 12:47Speaker 1: Jimmy Testaverde left. Walsh was the quarterback in 87 when
- 12:50Speaker 1: they won the national championship and in 88 where they
- 12:52Speaker 1: lost the one game to Notre Dame and finished number two.
- 12:56Speaker 1: The Cowboys drafted Troy Aikman number one. Now, I feel
- 12:59Speaker 1: like Jimmy is very revisionist in his view on Troy
- 13:04Speaker 1: or just leaves out important parts about Troy. Most notably,
- 13:08Speaker 1: they took Steve Walsh in the supplemental draft in 1989
- 13:13Speaker 1: with a pick that ultimately became the number one overall pick.
- 13:17Speaker 1: They used a first-round pick in the supplemental draft. They
- 13:20Speaker 1: went 1-15, so that was the number one pick, and
- 13:22Speaker 1: they took Steve Walsh. That first year, they were 0-11
- 13:26Speaker 1: when Troy Aikman started games. Steve Walsh started the one
- 13:30Speaker 1: game that they won in 1989 when they got themselves
- 13:33Speaker 1: a victory, okay? Jimmy's boys broke Troy Aikman's leg in
- 13:37Speaker 1: 1985 in Norman. That changed the course of everything, made
- 13:41Speaker 1: Troy transfer. My read has always been Jimmy, as former
- 13:46Speaker 1: coach at Oklahoma State and as the Miami coach, was
- 13:50Speaker 1: way too familiar with Troy. and could nitpick at him
- 13:53Speaker 1: because he had spent so much time.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Knew too much about him, so he knew his flaws
- 13:57Speaker 2: almost better than his strengths.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Knew all of it, right? And he's looking at his
- 14:01Speaker 1: team and saying how much tougher his Miami guys are
- 14:04Speaker 1: to the Oklahoma team. Remember, from 1985 to 1987, Troy
- 14:06Speaker 1: was the only quarterback in 85. But from 85 to 87,
- 14:10Speaker 1: Oklahoma went 33-3, which is to say Oklahoma went 33-0
- 14:14Speaker 1: against everybody except Miami and 0-3 against Miami. Home, road,
- 14:18Speaker 1: and bowl. They took them all in that point. But
- 14:21Speaker 1: Jimmy was never sold on Troy. And you can tell
- 14:23Speaker 1: he was never sold on Troy because they started Steve
- 14:26Speaker 1: Berline in the playoffs in 1991. By then, they had
- 14:30Speaker 1: traded Walsh. But Jimmy was ready to go to his guy.
- 14:34Speaker 1: He never thought that Troy Aikman really had it until
- 14:38Speaker 1: they won a Super Bowl. And then it was like, oh, okay.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Shocked that that's not there.
- 14:43Speaker 2: Almost doing the sports radio thing of, eh, is he
- 14:46Speaker 2: a winner?
- 14:46Speaker 1: Right, right. But you know what? That doesn't have nothing
- 14:49Speaker 1: to do with Jimmy. Now does it, right? All of this,
- 14:53Speaker 1: excuse me, with Jerry, all of this comes back to Jerry, Jerry, Jerry, Jerry,
- 14:57Speaker 1: Jerry at every turn. Of course, Jerry, the thing I
- 15:01Speaker 1: do appreciate about Jerry and find interesting about Jerry is
- 15:04Speaker 1: I think that Jerry is more willing to answer hard
- 15:06Speaker 1: questions than anybody that I can think of. And Jerry
- 15:09Speaker 1: is more willing to bring things up that I think
- 15:11Speaker 1: other people would skate away from than most folks I know.
- 15:15Speaker 1: I think the whole story of Jimmy and Jerry and
- 15:18Speaker 1: their relationship and how that went over these 30 years,
- 15:21Speaker 1: I did find that to be very interesting. I thought
- 15:25Speaker 1: the recollections of the power struggle and the fact that
- 15:28Speaker 1: they still can't agree on half the stuff, I found
- 15:31Speaker 1: that to be very interesting. However, to me, there is
- 15:37Speaker 1: no question Who the star of this is. And Ryan,
- 15:40Speaker 1: I haven't even asked if you've gotten around to watching it.
- 15:43Speaker 2: I've seen half. Okay. I've seen the first four.
- 15:46Speaker 1: So I do think that in the first four, you
- 15:48Speaker 1: may have seen by then who my vote for, no question,
- 15:50Speaker 1: who the biggest star on this is. It is Michael Irvin.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Of course.
- 15:54Speaker 1: And I think, you know who Michael Irvin is? What
- 16:02Speaker 1: if my buddy Jalen Rose was a Hall of Famer?
- 16:08Speaker 1: That is what Michael Irvin is. I can make an
- 16:11Speaker 1: argument that Michael Irvin is the most culturally influential football
- 16:18Speaker 1: player of the last 40 years. And when I say
- 16:22Speaker 1: culturally influential, I don't necessarily mean influential to the larger
- 16:27Speaker 1: culture outside of football. I mean influential to what a
- 16:31Speaker 1: football player was, could be, or the way that we
- 16:33Speaker 1: looked at football. And this is why I say this, okay?
- 16:37Speaker 1: Michael Irvin is the personality of the U. Like the
- 16:41Speaker 1: idea of what the U is, it lives and breathes
- 16:45Speaker 1: through Michael Irvin, who to me to this day is
- 16:47Speaker 1: probably the best player in the history of that program.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Certainly the most, to me, the most important player of
- 16:51Speaker 1: that program. The personality of the U does not exist
- 16:53Speaker 1: under Howard Schnellenberger. It exists really starting in 1985, Jimmy's
- 16:59Speaker 1: second year at coach and the year that Michael Irvin
- 17:03Speaker 1: showed up there. And where Irvin said his culture was, and,
- 17:06Speaker 1: you know, look at the other guys, Melvin Bratton, Alonzo Highsmith,
- 17:09Speaker 1: all those other guys, right? But it was the idea
- 17:12Speaker 1: that you could do all that shit that they was
- 17:13Speaker 1: doing and the dancing and the celebrating as long as
- 17:16Speaker 1: you worked really hard. Jimmy is fascinating because Jimmy liked it. Like,
- 17:21Speaker 1: they were not doing this in spite of Jimmy Johnson.
- 17:23Speaker 1: They were emboldened by the fact that Jimmy was like, whatever, man,
- 17:26Speaker 1: you boys having a good time. I wish I could dance.
- 17:28Speaker 1: I'd be out here doing the same shit as y'all,
- 17:30Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying? But... The personality of the
- 17:34Speaker 1: U is Michael Irvin, who then comes to the Cowboys
- 17:37Speaker 1: and as a rookie has the audacity to come to
- 17:39Speaker 1: Tom Landry with a list of players that says these guys,
- 17:43Speaker 1: they ain't going to work. Okay. The personality of the
- 17:47Speaker 1: Dallas Cowboys is the personality of Michael Irvin, for better
- 17:53Speaker 1: or worse, all the way to the White House stuff
- 17:56Speaker 1: and everything else, right? All of that is Michael Irvin.
- 17:59Speaker 1: And I do think that there are probably a lot
- 18:01Speaker 1: of younger people who see Michael Irvin on television. and
- 18:03Speaker 1: see Michael Irvin on the internet and do not understand
- 18:06Speaker 1: why like why is this a thing why is this
- 18:09Speaker 1: loud talking dude why why is he here like this
- 18:12Speaker 1: and the reason is he was as and look there
- 18:15Speaker 1: are a lot of people that have had arguments for
- 18:16Speaker 1: this Sterling Sharp has had an argument for this for
- 18:19Speaker 1: example but when you really go back and look at
- 18:20Speaker 1: it and keep in mind that Troy Aikman I think
- 18:22Speaker 1: had 20 touchdown passes one time in his career then
- 18:25Speaker 1: you go look at Michael Irvin's stats that was probably
- 18:28Speaker 1: the best wide receiver not named Jerry Rice in the 1990s.
- 18:32Speaker 1: He is the only wide receiver that I could ever
- 18:35Speaker 1: think of to truly be seen as the leader of
- 18:39Speaker 1: an offense, right? The leader of a team. And the
- 18:43Speaker 1: reason was he was a winner, a flat out 100% winner.
- 18:50Speaker 2: I mean, one in college, one in the pros. And
- 18:54Speaker 2: I think the Jalen Rose comparison is interesting. Became very,
- 18:58Speaker 2: very famous for a counter-cultural you know, sport, you know,
- 19:03Speaker 2: and also, you know, Jalen represents Michigan as well as,
- 19:07Speaker 2: you know, Michael Irvin represents Miami.
- 19:10Speaker 1: But Jalen was the face of a cultural phenomenon.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Yes.
- 19:15Speaker 1: And the U was a cultural phenomenon in a different
- 19:19Speaker 1: way in that they terrified people. People had their disagreements
- 19:22Speaker 1: with the Fab Five, but there had already been a Miami.
- 19:25Speaker 1: There had already been a UNLV. There had already been
- 19:28Speaker 1: some people that could kind of smooth you into it.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Even Florida State with Deion Sanders and all those things.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Those guys had already existed up until that point. irvin
- 19:38Speaker 1: showed up in the way they were doing in miami
- 19:39Speaker 1: nobody had seen anything like that right and then jimmy
- 19:43Speaker 1: brings it to the league and they're doing it again
- 19:46Speaker 1: so michael irvin and Emmitt Smith used to do this.
- 19:48Speaker 1: And this is a Michael Irvin idea, if I'm not mistaken.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Every time they score a touchdown, they take their helmets
- 19:53Speaker 1: off because they was like, somebody needs to see this face.
- 19:55Speaker 1: You're never going to know my face if I don't
- 19:57Speaker 1: show you my face, right? And you sit there and
- 20:00Speaker 1: you watch him and you watch Irvin play and you
- 20:03Speaker 1: look at that personality he's got and then him explaining
- 20:06Speaker 1: why he wore a mink that day in the middle
- 20:08Speaker 1: of the summer to court and all of that. Man,
- 20:11Speaker 1: it is your friendly reminder that they really only made
- 20:14Speaker 1: one of those.
- 20:14Speaker 2: It's so amazing. I think the comparisons to The Last
- 20:17Speaker 2: Dance are fair because you have so many people. Like
- 20:21Speaker 2: when they're doing their little ISO stuff, you're so riveted by.
- 20:26Speaker 2: And between Michael Irvin, Deion Sanders, Jimmy Johnson. I haven't
- 20:31Speaker 2: gotten to this part, but whenever Charles Haley shows up,
- 20:34Speaker 2: he's a crazy person. And again– This is the top four.
- 20:39Speaker 2: Have not mentioned Jerry Jones.
- 20:41Speaker 1: Right. By the way, what The Last Dance doesn't have
- 20:43Speaker 1: is Michael Irvin. Right. Part of what makes Michael Irvin
- 20:47Speaker 1: so interesting is Michael Irvin is far more willing to
- 20:50Speaker 1: make himself vulnerable about his shortcomings and his outright fuck-ups
- 20:53Speaker 1: than just about anybody that I can think of. He
- 20:57Speaker 1: will give that. Go check Michael Irvin's Hall of Fame speech.
- 21:01Speaker 1: He will give that to you. Also, Deion Sanders enters
- 21:04Speaker 1: the chat and In a cowboy hat. In a cowboy hat.
- 21:09Speaker 1: And I know how you guys think I feel about
- 21:12Speaker 1: Dion in total. I don't like all the things that
- 21:15Speaker 1: Dion does. But let me tell you what I do
- 21:16Speaker 1: love about Dion. I love about Dion that Dion can
- 21:20Speaker 1: sit in that chair and say that I was it.
- 21:24Speaker 1: You know what it means? I was it. And that
- 21:28Speaker 1: is a statement of fact. There is no way that
- 21:32Speaker 1: he can honestly discuss himself. without saying i was it
- 21:37Speaker 1: nobody else can do that right he sits in there
- 21:40Speaker 1: and he does that and what he and michael irvin
- 21:43Speaker 1: with each other anytime i see them talk to each
- 21:45Speaker 1: other something that i find very interesting about them is
- 21:48Speaker 1: and this is one thing about those miami guys in
- 21:50Speaker 1: particular but i also think it's something that dion does
- 21:53Speaker 1: not get enough credit for which is dion's confidence is
- 21:57Speaker 1: legitimate Deion's confidence is sincere. Now, he does not like
- 22:02Speaker 1: it when people push back on him in various ways.
- 22:06Speaker 1: But what Deion Sanders never was, was threatened by Michael Irvin.
- 22:10Speaker 1: What Michael Irvin never was, was threatened by Deion Sanders.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Like those two dudes are legit and they look at
- 22:18Speaker 1: each other and say game recognized game. Like there's a
- 22:21Speaker 1: clip where Dion talks about Dion and Michael Irvin talking.
- 22:25Speaker 1: And I can't remember which one of them had gotten
- 22:27Speaker 1: to the NFL network first. I think it was Michael Irvin.
- 22:30Speaker 1: It must have been because Dion retires and Michael Irvin.
- 22:33Speaker 1: And he's talking about how Michael Irvin sat down with
- 22:35Speaker 1: him and explained to him. what he needed to do
- 22:38Speaker 1: on be on television. Your camera's going to be here.
- 22:40Speaker 1: This is going to be here. This is going to
- 22:41Speaker 1: be here. All of this stuff and just walking him
- 22:43Speaker 1: through what he needed. Like there's a camaraderie between those
- 22:47Speaker 1: two cats that I find to be very interesting, which
- 22:49Speaker 1: gets back to part of what to me is so
- 22:51Speaker 1: interesting about those Cowboys teams. And it's, again, the spirit
- 22:54Speaker 1: of the U coming back, which is it's team, man.
- 22:57Speaker 1: It's an outright team. I ain't even got to talk
- 22:59Speaker 1: about Emmitt Smith yet, Ryan, as we talk about all
- 23:01Speaker 1: the things we didn't talk about. We ain't even get
- 23:03Speaker 1: to talk about Emmitt Smith. And none of these, as
- 23:05Speaker 1: you put it, are Jerry Jones. Like, why did this
- 23:10Speaker 1: have to be about you? You have this franchise that
- 23:14Speaker 1: was something before you got there. And look, there's an
- 23:18Speaker 1: episode at the end where it's why they haven't won
- 23:20Speaker 1: anything in 30 years. He kind of gets into that one, right?
- 23:24Speaker 1: He kind of goes in that direction. But in the end,
- 23:27Speaker 1: you just get left with the thought, man, that I
- 23:29Speaker 1: get that you want it to be about you. Or
- 23:31Speaker 1: how about this? I get that Jerry wants to do
- 23:34Speaker 1: all the things, but it doesn't have to be about you.
- 23:38Speaker 1: in the course of doing all the things. You want
- 23:40Speaker 1: to be the GM? That's fine, right? He didn't buy
- 23:43Speaker 1: that car to ride in it. He bought that car
- 23:45Speaker 1: to drive it. I get that. It's yours. If you
- 23:47Speaker 1: want to do that, that's fine. And the way that
- 23:50Speaker 1: you handle attention and all of that stuff, okay, cool.
- 23:53Speaker 1: I get all of those things 100%. But this, it
- 23:59Speaker 1: can't be about you. It can't be about you. And
- 24:03Speaker 1: in the end, you will realize, and I remember once
- 24:07Speaker 1: having this conversation with somebody else about something very similar.
- 24:12Speaker 1: If you got something good, everybody will get the credit
- 24:15Speaker 1: for it. And Jerry very much cares about the credit.
- 24:20Speaker 1: If you got something good, everybody involved will get credit
- 24:23Speaker 1: for it. Just make sure it's good. Right? All you
- 24:28Speaker 1: got to do is make sure that it's good. And I,
- 24:31Speaker 1: as someone who is generally a defender... of Jerry Jones
- 24:37Speaker 1: I just came away from looking at the way that
- 24:40Speaker 1: film was produced and it's like see that's why y'all
- 24:44Speaker 1: be out here looking like losers all right college football
- 24:52Speaker 1: season is about to begin we got our good buddy
- 24:54Speaker 1: Spencer Hall he is going to join us on Friday
- 24:57Speaker 1: although I guess college football season already began began they
- 25:02Speaker 1: played Farmageddon That's Iowa State and Kansas State, but they
- 25:07Speaker 1: played it in Ireland. And could they have called it
- 25:10Speaker 1: famine getting? It's tough. We can laugh about the famine now.
- 25:20Speaker 1: It's been a long time.
- 25:22Speaker 2: I think any potato based humor is fair game.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Hey, let me tell you something. I don't think there's
- 25:28Speaker 1: any plague, natural disaster, whatever it is, that sounds quite
- 25:32Speaker 1: as dire as a famine.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Not even a famine. A specific vegetable famine.
- 25:39Speaker 1: Yes. Yes. They're like, yo, man, what are we supposed
- 25:41Speaker 1: to do? That's what we got here.
- 25:42Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying?
- 25:43Speaker 1: That's all we got.
- 25:43Speaker 2: That's all that can grow here and we can't eat.
- 25:45Speaker 2: We can't grow it.
- 25:46Speaker 1: We can't grow anything.
- 25:47Speaker 2: We've got to get out of here.
- 25:49Speaker 1: And so for those of you who– did you see
- 25:50Speaker 1: what happened though? And I feel so– okay. So Kansas
- 25:53Speaker 1: state got a quarterback named Avery Johnson, not Avery Johnson,
- 25:57Speaker 1: but Avery Johnson. Right.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Yeah. And like a lot of the Kansas state quarterbacks
- 26:01Speaker 2: that have been there.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Yeah. But yo, this is what I didn't realize. Um,
- 26:06Speaker 1: apparently his brother and his dad got into a fist
- 26:09Speaker 1: fight in the streets of Dublin. Yep. You saw this.
- 26:12Speaker 2: Yep.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Okay. So I see now granted, I am aware of
- 26:19Speaker 1: new Orleans, Avery Johnson. Okay.
- 26:21Speaker 2: Okay.
- 26:21Speaker 1: But even still, I see the guy's name is Avery Johnson.
- 26:25Speaker 1: He's a quarterback for Kansas State, and his family is
- 26:30Speaker 1: scrapping it out in the streets of Dublin. It was
- 26:34Speaker 1: very similar to me. They had to put out a statement.
- 26:36Speaker 1: They did. They did. But I would say it was
- 26:39Speaker 1: in the moment, as I had heard about it and
- 26:41Speaker 1: had not watched it, it felt very similar to me to,
- 26:46Speaker 1: for example, the D.C. Sniper. where I read about it
- 26:52Speaker 1: and I was like, whew, glad that ain't us. But.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Didn't know where you were going. But.
- 27:04Speaker 1: But... First of all, go look up a picture of
- 27:07Speaker 1: this Avery Johnson.
- 27:09Speaker 2: I know.
- 27:09Speaker 1: He looks like an Avery. Yes. But his daddy, that's
- 27:14Speaker 1: a Johnson right there.
- 27:16Speaker 2: Yes.
- 27:16Speaker 1: That's a Johnson. And then his brother get up off
- 27:19Speaker 1: the ground with these big-ass cornrows. And I was like, oh,
- 27:22Speaker 1: come on, man. I... I thought it wasn't us. There
- 27:28Speaker 1: was no way. Let me make sure I get this
- 27:31Speaker 1: right on this Avery Johnson. Let me just make sure.
- 27:36Speaker 1: This kid. Oh, okay, okay. Now that I look at
- 27:40Speaker 1: this picture, I see it. I see it. But still,
- 27:46Speaker 1: I thought it wasn't us, man.
- 27:52Speaker 2: Dublin does that to people.
- 27:54Speaker 1: Yeah. All of that came together and they were fighting
- 27:57Speaker 1: in the streets. And by the way, it looked like
- 28:01Speaker 1: I wasn't able to clearly glean a winner.
- 28:04Speaker 2: No, it was a draw.
- 28:06Speaker 1: It was a draw, which... You know my take on this.
- 28:10Speaker 1: If the son beats the dad in the fight, daddy
- 28:12Speaker 1: ain't shit. On one level or another.
- 28:15Speaker 2: Yeah, he gets the big piece of chicken forever.
- 28:18Speaker 1: That's right. That's right. What do y'all got to move?
- 28:24Speaker 1: Somebody here has to move. But anyway, I just needed
- 28:27Speaker 1: to note that before we get going on this. But
- 28:32Speaker 1: the story clearly of this upcoming college football season is
- 28:36Speaker 1: Arch Madden. And why? I just need somebody to explain
- 28:46Speaker 1: to me why. What's the big deal here? Okay, now look,
- 28:50Speaker 1: and I say this as somebody who used to root
- 28:52Speaker 1: for Texas until it became a complete and total affront
- 28:55Speaker 1: to my own dignity for me to continue to do that.
- 28:59Speaker 1: I asked the why about Arch, not why people are
- 29:02Speaker 1: interested in Look, I think it's not that difficult to
- 29:06Speaker 1: understand why somebody would be interested at the very least
- 29:08Speaker 1: on the surface, right? He is a five-star recruit. He
- 29:11Speaker 1: does seem to be very talented. And as I've said
- 29:14Speaker 1: many times, I find it interesting that finally Archie Manning's
- 29:17Speaker 1: genes passed down with someone who could also throw and run.
- 29:21Speaker 1: Because for those of you who don't understand, Archie Manning
- 29:24Speaker 1: could go. And I feel like Archie Manning had to
- 29:28Speaker 1: be embarrassed at looking at how slow his sons are Um,
- 29:32Speaker 1: you know, kind of like when some black people look
- 29:34Speaker 1: up and find out that the kids can't dance, like, damn,
- 29:36Speaker 1: how do I create a solution to this problem? But anyway, um,
- 29:40Speaker 1: um i just want to read something off to you
- 29:42Speaker 1: right fast so far arch manning in his texas career
- 29:47Speaker 1: has started two games has completed 61 of 90 passes
- 29:51Speaker 1: for 939 yards nine touchdowns and two interceptions and i
- 29:55Speaker 1: want to be very clear that those are really good
- 29:57Speaker 1: numbers I also want to be very clear that Arch
- 30:00Speaker 1: Manning has started two games and could not take the
- 30:03Speaker 1: job from Quinn Ewers. Now, I don't know why exactly
- 30:07Speaker 1: he couldn't take the job from Quinn Ewers. I don't
- 30:09Speaker 1: know if you saw it is Ryan, but they did
- 30:10Speaker 1: an interview, you know, about press availability. And I forget
- 30:13Speaker 1: one of the receivers they asked who threw a more
- 30:15Speaker 1: catchable ball, Arch or Quinn. And the response was no comment.
- 30:21Speaker 2: That's not great.
- 30:22Speaker 1: Yeah, but I don't know which no comment it is.
- 30:25Speaker 2: That's bad for one of them.
- 30:27Speaker 1: I don't know if you saw Quinn Ewers play any
- 30:29Speaker 1: preseason football, brother, but I can't. There are people using
- 30:33Speaker 1: hyperbolic terms to talk about Arch Manning thus far, and
- 30:36Speaker 1: I just don't know where you're getting it from. He
- 30:40Speaker 1: may turn out to be that guy. I'm not saying
- 30:42Speaker 1: he's not that good. I'm saying I don't know how
- 30:44Speaker 1: we know. Right. Like I don't I don't have a
- 30:47Speaker 1: great understanding why we're so confident in this other than
- 30:50Speaker 1: we so believe in the sell now on this kind of.
- 30:57Speaker 1: The late great Neil Postman made a point in one
- 30:59Speaker 1: of his books that he thought that we would reach
- 31:01Speaker 1: a point where a prerequisite for running for political office
- 31:03Speaker 1: would be some measure of celebrity that happened prior. He
- 31:06Speaker 1: thought that was going to be an effect of television.
- 31:08Speaker 1: And we have seen that bear itself out of the
- 31:10Speaker 1: political world. I bring that up because these recognizable last
- 31:14Speaker 1: names seem to be what creates stars in sports right
- 31:16Speaker 1: now as much as anything else is like, oh, you're
- 31:19Speaker 1: related to somebody. What gets me about Arch is his
- 31:22Speaker 1: daddy wasn't even a quarterback. His daddy is the other one.
- 31:28Speaker 1: The soup with coop dude.
- 31:31Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. I mean, obviously you have the famous family,
- 31:34Speaker 2: but it's not coming from that direct gene pool.
- 31:37Speaker 1: Yo, that's what I'm saying. Like, we're doing all this
- 31:39Speaker 1: for a nephew? For a nephew? Who, by the way,
- 31:44Speaker 1: is about to walk into one of the more pressure-packed
- 31:46Speaker 1: situations that I can think of, right? Like maybe he
- 31:48Speaker 1: has the Eli Manning gene and all of this just
- 31:50Speaker 1: rolls off his back. Maybe he's got the Peyton Manning
- 31:53Speaker 1: gene and he thinks too much. I don't really have
- 31:56Speaker 1: the answer yet. Just like that. Tight as a drum.
- 31:59Speaker 1: Tight as a drum. Couldn't stick a pin in with
- 32:01Speaker 1: a jackhammer. You are absolutely correct. I don't know if
- 32:04Speaker 1: it's that one, but Texas is the preseason number one.
- 32:06Speaker 1: They are starting the season at Ohio State. They are
- 32:08Speaker 1: actually underdogs. Preseason number one is underdog in the first game,
- 32:12Speaker 1: going against the defending national champions. And I just want
- 32:16Speaker 1: to throw something out here for people who may not
- 32:19Speaker 1: be that familiar with Texas football. I'm going to rattle
- 32:22Speaker 1: off in my lifetime. And if I'm forgetting somebody, somebody
- 32:26Speaker 1: feel free to let me know. But The super duper
- 32:31Speaker 1: top notch quarterback recruits, like the ones that walked on
- 32:34Speaker 1: campus of people like, oh, something's going to be different now.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Shea Marins. Chris Sims. Vince Young. Garrett Gilbert. And Quinn Ewers.
- 32:51Speaker 1: None of them went exactly as expected.
- 32:54Speaker 2: This is a little before me, but Colt wasn't a
- 32:56Speaker 2: big-time recruit?
- 32:57Speaker 1: No. Colt is actually one of the more amazing, I
- 33:00Speaker 1: can't believe this happened out of nowhere, success stories of
- 33:03Speaker 1: all time.
- 33:04Speaker 2: Also one of the most underrated college careers.
- 33:07Speaker 1: All-time great. All-time great. He and Tim Tebow are the
- 33:10Speaker 1: same caliber of college player. But do you know where
- 33:13Speaker 1: Colt McCoy originally committed to play college football?
- 33:16Speaker 2: I do not.
- 33:17Speaker 1: LSU. LSU.
- 33:19Speaker 2: That's incredible.
- 33:20Speaker 1: He committed to go to LSU, and then once it
- 33:22Speaker 1: became clear that Ryan Paraloo, even if he hadn't told nobody,
- 33:26Speaker 1: was going to go to LSU, Colt then went to
- 33:29Speaker 1: Texas where Paraloo had been committed. There's like three degrees
- 33:33Speaker 1: of separation for Ryan Paraloo.
- 33:36Speaker 2: That's a podcast for 10 people that me and you
- 33:39Speaker 2: would be very interested in.
- 33:40Speaker 1: Yes, exactly. But all 10 of us would have a ball.
- 33:44Speaker 1: A ball, I tell you. But every single one of those.
- 33:47Speaker 1: Vince Young, it took a season and a half before
- 33:50Speaker 1: that got going. The Chris Sims saga was a four-year
- 33:53Speaker 1: drama the whole way. Miranda never turned out to be
- 33:56Speaker 1: that guy. Gary Gilbert eventually made the NFL but had
- 33:59Speaker 1: to leave because it was so bad while he was
- 34:01Speaker 1: at Texas. And yours, it never quite added up, right?
- 34:04Speaker 1: So now, Ohio State, playing a game at Ohio State
- 34:09Speaker 1: as a Texas quarterback, to me, there are three Vince
- 34:13Speaker 1: Young games from college, three specific Vince Young games. Two
- 34:16Speaker 1: of them are Rose Bowls. In between those two Rose
- 34:19Speaker 1: Bowls was the game at Ohio State where A.J. Hawk had,
- 34:23Speaker 1: I want to say, 10 tackles, one sack, one interception,
- 34:27Speaker 1: and it was an incredible game for a defensive player.
- 34:32Speaker 1: Except the problem was, that dude was on the other
- 34:35Speaker 1: side and he walked him down and one day game
- 34:37Speaker 1: at the horseshoe. Like that was, that was for real the, Oh,
- 34:41Speaker 1: something is really happening here with this guy, right? This
- 34:45Speaker 1: is the site 20 years later of one of the
- 34:47Speaker 1: biggest wins in the history of the program. And this
- 34:50Speaker 1: is the stadium that Arch Manning is walking into with
- 34:53Speaker 1: the number one team in America that seems to be
- 34:56Speaker 1: finally on the verge of fulfilling the promise of what
- 34:59Speaker 1: this program can be in the right people's hands and
- 35:03Speaker 1: And before this game has even been won, we have
- 35:06Speaker 1: people talking about him like he is probably going to
- 35:08Speaker 1: be the greatest quarterback ever. Not everybody is saying that,
- 35:12Speaker 1: but this is what we're saying all the way across
- 35:14Speaker 1: the board. And that all feels like wishing. Right. It
- 35:19Speaker 1: all to me just feels like selling a story that
- 35:22Speaker 1: would be good for business forever. for all parties involved
- 35:26Speaker 1: um but it is a amazing to me level of
- 35:30Speaker 1: stardom and fame for somebody that hasn't like really done
- 35:34Speaker 1: anything i mean you have guys that get super famous
- 35:37Speaker 1: in college right reggie bush is a great example of
- 35:40Speaker 1: a guy like reggie bush matt liner um tim tebow
- 35:44Speaker 1: but that level of fame normally comes after they're good
- 35:47Speaker 1: yeah to some kind of receipt Right. Like in one
- 35:50Speaker 1: form or another, something of, oh, you did this. Like
- 35:52Speaker 1: Herschel Walker. Right. That's another example. Like there's some form of, oh,
- 35:56Speaker 1: that guy did this. That's why that's not that's not
- 36:00Speaker 1: what's happening here.
- 36:01Speaker 2: And Archie Manning was a big time recruit, but he
- 36:03Speaker 2: didn't play big time high school football. And, you know,
- 36:05Speaker 2: we have a long history of college football, like anticipated debuts.
- 36:11Speaker 2: But not after a guy has been on campus for
- 36:13Speaker 2: two years. That doesn't happen anymore.
- 36:15Speaker 1: Right. And he's got a lot– he had coming out
- 36:17Speaker 1: of school a lot more truthers than somebody– like the
- 36:22Speaker 1: range of is it just because his last name is Manning.
- 36:24Speaker 1: Questions about if you're that good playing at the level
- 36:27Speaker 1: of high school football that you played at, why weren't
- 36:29Speaker 1: your teams a little bit better? And look, it's not
- 36:32Speaker 1: like that school never had great players, both Mannings, Odell Beckham.
- 36:36Speaker 1: But even still, the question was like, hey, so– you know,
- 36:43Speaker 1: they could have been better, right?
- 36:44Speaker 2: Right.
- 36:44Speaker 1: Like there's a lot of that. There's a lot of,
- 36:48Speaker 1: I think that this will be a more interesting situation
- 36:50Speaker 1: if we approached it with questions rather than approaching it
- 36:54Speaker 1: with hype. But we have decided already that he's the guy.
- 37:00Speaker 1: This is the story. And I guess we're going to
- 37:04Speaker 1: see on Saturday. Now, won't we?
- 37:06Speaker 2: Speaking of hype, did you see the excerpt from Seth
- 37:08Speaker 2: Wickersham's book?
- 37:10Speaker 1: The one part that I saw. Okay.
- 37:14Speaker 2: I want to read it for the people who have
- 37:15Speaker 2: not seen it because I think we're going to say
- 37:17Speaker 2: the same thing.
- 37:18Speaker 1: Yes, go ahead.
- 37:19Speaker 2: No one knew where Arch Manning wanted to go to school.
- 37:21Speaker 2: Some in the family preferred Georgia where head coach Kirby
- 37:23Speaker 2: Smart would coach him hard. Others, Alabama. The problem for
- 37:27Speaker 2: Alabama was that Nick Saban, whom the Crimson Tide assistants
- 37:30Speaker 2: affectionately called Daddy, was getting up there in years and
- 37:33Speaker 2: no one knew how long he'd be there. Daddy. Daddy.
- 37:39Speaker 1: Well, hold on. That leads to the next part.
- 37:41Speaker 2: OK. All right.
- 37:43Speaker 1: So that part was a little dicey.
- 37:46Speaker 2: I didn't know if you wanted to bring that.
- 37:47Speaker 1: Oh, no, no, no. I do. So for those of
- 37:51Speaker 1: you who don't remember, Steve Sarkeesian had to leave USC
- 37:56Speaker 1: because he suffered one of the more embarrassing moments that
- 37:59Speaker 1: anybody has ever had. And he was a raging alcoholic
- 38:03Speaker 1: and acted bad in public in a way that it
- 38:06Speaker 1: could not recover from.
- 38:08Speaker 2: It was publicly embarrassing.
- 38:10Speaker 1: Yes, it was dreadful. He left there and he made
- 38:14Speaker 1: the slow walk back, right? He was offensive coordinator in
- 38:16Speaker 1: the NFL. He then wound up being offensive coordinator at
- 38:20Speaker 1: Alabama because I think his buddy Lane got him back
- 38:23Speaker 1: on at Alabama and then he became an offensive coordinator there.
- 38:28Speaker 1: And he got the Texas job. And Pete Golding, who
- 38:31Speaker 1: was the defensive coordinator at Alabama, was the one tasked
- 38:35Speaker 1: with recruiting Arch Madden. And he basically said, you know,
- 38:40Speaker 1: he hopes everything goes OK with Sark. Just hope he
- 38:44Speaker 1: doesn't fall off the wagon.
- 38:45Speaker 2: Yeah, it was it was it was the most southern
- 38:50Speaker 2: passive aggressive thing I've ever seen in my life.
- 38:52Speaker 1: It was it was it was.
- 38:54Speaker 2: You know, bless his heart, but I hope he doesn't
- 38:56Speaker 2: make those mistakes he used to make.
- 38:58Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. I hope he doesn't fall off the wagon.
- 38:59Speaker 1: And there was somebody says something to go to goodbye.
- 39:01Speaker 1: And he was like. Daddy's on me about this one.
- 39:08Speaker 1: Because I think the thing was, sometimes with a recruit,
- 39:12Speaker 1: part of it is about how good he is. Part
- 39:14Speaker 1: of it is about winning. Like, not letting that guy
- 39:17Speaker 1: go somewhere else. You don't want Texas to build the
- 39:20Speaker 1: momentum that comes from having landed a recruit like Arch Manning,
- 39:24Speaker 1: the signal that it winds up giving. Maybe that's not
- 39:27Speaker 1: the thing that he wants, but yeah, he said, that
- 39:29Speaker 1: is all me about that one. Here's the thing about it.
- 39:34Speaker 1: As bad as everybody found that, every single job that
- 39:42Speaker 1: Steve Sarkeesian has gotten after that, somebody has had that
- 39:47Speaker 1: exact question.
- 39:50Speaker 2: Of course.
- 39:51Speaker 1: Exact question. I will say this because I actually don't
- 39:52Speaker 1: think coaching at Texas comes with a lot of annoying things,
- 39:56Speaker 1: but I don't think it's a high-pressure job. Being the
- 39:59Speaker 1: offensive coordinator at Alabama, that's a high-pressure job.
- 40:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:04Speaker 1: And he survived that. Once he got to the other
- 40:07Speaker 1: side of that, it's kind of like, oh, okay, you know.
- 40:10Speaker 1: You straight. Yeah. I think you're going to wind up
- 40:14Speaker 1: being okay. But that is still wild that he was
- 40:16Speaker 1: just like, yeah, I hope he doesn't fall off the wagon.
- 40:18Speaker 1: And I'm looking at Pete like, brother, that's, I'm just
- 40:21Speaker 1: here to tell you right now, that one's not going
- 40:24Speaker 1: to work. They've already thought about this.
- 40:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:27Speaker 1: Like, I assure you that Archie Manning has already considered
- 40:31Speaker 1: this part and has asked this man about it when
- 40:33Speaker 1: went nobody else around. Promise you, the recruit got all
- 40:37Speaker 1: the letters. Daddy's Daddy is all me. I'm sorry, y'all.
- 40:43Speaker 1: I've worked with and for some very impressive people. Some
- 40:47Speaker 1: were domineering than others. You know? However, I ain't calling
- 40:55Speaker 1: no five foot six man daddy. You got me messed up.
- 41:03Speaker 2: All right, Bo. We wanted to go through some quick
- 41:04Speaker 2: stories for the back half of the show. Stuff you
- 41:06Speaker 2: missed when you were on vacation. We're just calling this
- 41:09Speaker 2: what I miss. Nothing too crazy. So we're going to
- 41:12Speaker 2: start with another famous guy with a famous last name,
- 41:16Speaker 2: Shador Sanders. That mania has continued. Obviously, he had the
- 41:20Speaker 2: strong preseason debut. Struggled a little bit in his last
- 41:23Speaker 2: time out against the Rams. Three for six for, you know,
- 41:28Speaker 2: 14 yards. Took five sacks. But, however, was pulled before
- 41:33Speaker 2: the two-minute drill in that game for Tyler Hunley. Many
- 41:37Speaker 2: of his, you know, strong online contingent is are claiming
- 41:41Speaker 2: Stefanski is sabotaging him. Bo, your thoughts.
- 41:45Speaker 1: OK. Not having him run that two minute drill is
- 41:50Speaker 1: a strange decision. Right. I think we would all agree
- 41:55Speaker 1: that having Tyler Hundley, who none of us think is
- 41:59Speaker 1: going to make the team.
- 42:00Speaker 2: Who was cut, who's cut like 24 hours later.
- 42:03Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, look, they're going to keep all four
- 42:04Speaker 1: of these quarterbacks, I think. Right. The idea of Hundley
- 42:09Speaker 1: running the two-minute drill under that, what's the point? What
- 42:13Speaker 1: were you doing that for? Do I believe that Sanders
- 42:18Speaker 1: is being sabotaged? No. I think that is excessive. Do
- 42:22Speaker 1: I think that he is being put in the best
- 42:26Speaker 1: positions to be successful? No. But you know why I
- 42:30Speaker 1: say that. Because he plays for the Browns. Nobody in
- 42:36Speaker 1: that motherfucker is in a position to be successful. What
- 42:38Speaker 1: the fuck are you talking about?
- 42:39Speaker 2: He's a fifth round pick for the Browns.
- 42:41Speaker 1: They're going to start Joe fucking Flacco. I know I've
- 42:44Speaker 1: cussed a lot more in this show than I typically
- 42:46Speaker 1: would prefer. They're going to start Joe Flacco. Nobody's in
- 42:50Speaker 1: a position to be successful. They're going to go from him.
- 42:53Speaker 1: They're going to go to Kenny Pickett. I'm told that
- 42:55Speaker 1: Dylan Gabriel looked okay. I've asked you Shador folks to
- 42:59Speaker 1: pace yourselves. Did I not say to pace yourselves? Remember
- 43:02Speaker 1: when I said y'all need to pace y'all selves? Just
- 43:04Speaker 1: pace y'all selves. Because look, I promise you, he's going
- 43:07Speaker 1: to get to play because they're all going to get
- 43:08Speaker 1: to play because they all stink. Okay? Like I saw
- 43:13Speaker 1: clips of Shador from the last game. The biggest problem
- 43:17Speaker 1: he had before remains the biggest problem that he has
- 43:19Speaker 1: right now. He holds the ball too long. Right? That is.
- 43:24Speaker 2: And some quarterbacks get over that and most don't. Right.
- 43:27Speaker 1: And... He is not an unathletic quarterback, but he's not
- 43:31Speaker 1: athletic enough to be the guy that holds the ball
- 43:33Speaker 1: too long. Right. He holds the ball too long. And
- 43:36Speaker 1: I think it was Deontay Lee of the Ringer who
- 43:38Speaker 1: put some clips up running through some of these concepts.
- 43:40Speaker 1: And you can see it. You can say that he
- 43:41Speaker 1: was playing behind a bad offensive line. And I'm not
- 43:44Speaker 1: saying those things are wrong, but there were throws there
- 43:46Speaker 1: to be made that he did not make. Right. He's
- 43:49Speaker 1: not there yet. I can't get this caught up in
- 43:54Speaker 1: somebody who is bad. like at barely make the team
- 43:58Speaker 1: level you know i think i think that's i don't
- 44:01Speaker 1: think that's an unfair characterization to make of him at
- 44:04Speaker 1: this point he's like a a kind of sort of
- 44:07Speaker 1: make the team kind of player but the conspiracy hold
- 44:13Speaker 1: on let me be clear he was not the choice
- 44:17Speaker 1: of the head coach i would understand that the head
- 44:21Speaker 1: coach doesn't want to waste a roster spot on a
- 44:28Speaker 1: If I were Stefanski, I'd have faith that I was right.
- 44:31Speaker 1: And I'd throw Chateau out there in that second on
- 44:33Speaker 1: that two-minute drill. And then show the world. Show him, right?
- 44:38Speaker 1: He couldn't have possibly played that worse. So I don't
- 44:41Speaker 1: want to pretend like I don't understand some of the
- 44:43Speaker 1: grumbling behind him not playing that two-minute drill. However... Let's
- 44:48Speaker 1: not pretend like before that two-minute drill, he was showing
- 44:51Speaker 1: himself as somebody who was earning his right into playing
- 44:55Speaker 1: that two-minute drill, right? I just, I've just, I've never
- 44:59Speaker 1: seen a team with five quarterbacks, because don't forget Deshaun Watson,
- 45:03Speaker 1: nasty ass, still over there. And none of us think
- 45:06Speaker 1: that they are good. Like, to the big Choudhury fans,
- 45:08Speaker 1: do you think he's good? I think that's my question. Like,
- 45:11Speaker 1: do you think right now he's good? Maybe you think
- 45:13Speaker 1: he can be good, but do you truly think right
- 45:15Speaker 1: now that he's a good player? And if you don't
- 45:18Speaker 1: think that right now he's a good player, pace yourself.
- 45:22Speaker 2: Pace yourself.
- 45:23Speaker 1: All right, Ryan, what else did I miss?
- 45:25Speaker 2: Speaking of quarterbacks who might not be very good, Daniel
- 45:28Speaker 2: Jones was named the starter for the Colts over Anthony Richardson.
- 45:32Speaker 2: The fourth overall pick a few years ago is now
- 45:35Speaker 2: going to be the backup for the Colts, and we're
- 45:38Speaker 2: going to see Daniel Jones out there week one.
- 45:41Speaker 1: Okay, I just want to throw out that I can't
- 45:42Speaker 1: find anybody who thinks that Daniel Jones has performed better
- 45:45Speaker 1: this preseason than Anthony Richardson. I can't. Right. Now, if
- 45:54Speaker 1: you want to start getting into your conspiracy theories about
- 45:57Speaker 1: the head coach simply not wanting to play a quarterback,
- 46:01Speaker 1: it seems very clear that that is what is going
- 46:04Speaker 1: on here. For whatever reason, it seems like and I
- 46:08Speaker 1: look if I'm wrong, I'm wrong. Seems like Steichen and
- 46:11Speaker 1: Ballard are playing for their jobs. In some capacity. Steichen
- 46:15Speaker 1: probably more particularly than Ballard, but I think they feel
- 46:18Speaker 1: like they're working for their jobs this season. And they
- 46:21Speaker 1: don't feel comfortable putting their futures in the hands of
- 46:24Speaker 1: Anthony Richardson. Again, somewhat understandable. Not understandable. Putting your future
- 46:33Speaker 1: in the hands of Daniel Jones. Go look at what
- 46:37Speaker 1: the Giants have. What's left of Russell Wilson... Jameis and
- 46:45Speaker 1: that Jackson Dart thing.
- 46:47Speaker 2: I'll believe it when I see it.
- 46:48Speaker 1: A quarterback drafted in the 20s. Just go look at
- 46:51Speaker 1: how that works out. Typically, Kenny Pickett, I believe, is
- 46:55Speaker 1: one of those. Speaking of what we were just talking about. Right. Right.
- 46:58Speaker 1: And the Giants were like, no, no, we're good. We
- 47:00Speaker 1: can't do this. OK, we absolutely cannot do this.
- 47:04Speaker 2: Released him midseason.
- 47:06Speaker 1: Yes. Yes. Oh, yes. That's right. Because he went to
- 47:08Speaker 1: the Vikings. The Colts paid him $ 14 million. Look, we
- 47:13Speaker 1: knew that he was going to be the starter right
- 47:15Speaker 1: then and there. You don't pay somebody $ 14 million in
- 47:17Speaker 1: the NFL not to start. That's not what this is, right?
- 47:22Speaker 1: Those people wanted him to take Anthony Richardson's job. And
- 47:25Speaker 1: when he did not take Anthony Richardson's job, they gave
- 47:28Speaker 1: it to him, right? Now, look. I believe you try
- 47:32Speaker 1: this Anthony Richardson thing until it just don't work no more, okay?
- 47:35Speaker 1: He's just too talented. He needs more reps. To me,
- 47:37Speaker 1: the real lesson or the moral of the story with
- 47:39Speaker 1: Anthony Richardson is if you need more reps, stay in
- 47:42Speaker 1: college until you get the reps because there's no room
- 47:44Speaker 1: in the pros for you to get the reps. That
- 47:46Speaker 1: is another one, by the way, the amazing levels of
- 47:49Speaker 1: Cam Newton is that Cam Newton was a guy that
- 47:51Speaker 1: needed the reps and got him in the NFL, right?
- 47:53Speaker 1: And managed to make it work. Richardson needs the reps,
- 47:56Speaker 1: but people's jobs are on the line. They can't just
- 47:58Speaker 1: be out here letting you get this practice. He does
- 48:01Speaker 1: the hard things really well. He seems to struggle with
- 48:03Speaker 1: the easy things, and it seems abundantly clear that behind
- 48:06Speaker 1: the scenes, they don't believe. that he is a professional.
- 48:10Speaker 1: He does not comport himself maturely enough to get everything done.
- 48:14Speaker 1: I don't know what has changed, if it's changed this offseason,
- 48:17Speaker 1: if he has been better, though everything they indicate says
- 48:20Speaker 1: that they think that he has gotten better. Now, I
- 48:23Speaker 1: said something in the episode with Michael Smith that we
- 48:26Speaker 1: did about black quarterbacks that I felt like Lamar Jackson
- 48:28Speaker 1: was the last black quarterback that truly had to overcome
- 48:30Speaker 1: his blackness to get a chance. And I think that's
- 48:34Speaker 1: still largely true. However, And maybe this is not as
- 48:38Speaker 1: much about being a black quarterback as being a white quarterback.
- 48:42Speaker 1: But the way that they are handling Richardson feels familiar
- 48:48Speaker 1: in some ways. But at the same time, we saw
- 48:51Speaker 1: the thing that Richardson did where he tapped out of
- 48:53Speaker 1: that game. By the way, back to the back to
- 48:55Speaker 1: the Browns. They tried to give this job to Joe Flacco.
- 49:01Speaker 1: And he lost it. They had to give it back
- 49:02Speaker 1: to Anthony Richardson after they tried to get it. But
- 49:05Speaker 1: the Browns were like, yeah, he can start for us.
- 49:06Speaker 1: He couldn't beat Anthony Richardson out is what I'm saying.
- 49:09Speaker 1: All right. But anyway. Giving up on Anthony Richardson at
- 49:14Speaker 1: the beginning of year three.
- 49:17Speaker 2: Hmm.
- 49:18Speaker 1: That feels a little dicey. right? But the GTBW, good
- 49:23Speaker 1: to be white of it all, is Daniel Jones is
- 49:28Speaker 1: now in, if I am not mistaken, year.
- 49:33Speaker 2: Seven?
- 49:35Speaker 1: He was drafted in 2019, right? And we haven't given
- 49:39Speaker 1: up yet. We're still approaching him with a level of optimism.
- 49:44Speaker 1: You still got hope in year seven, Daniel Jones, but
- 49:48Speaker 1: you have given up on year three of quite possibly
- 49:52Speaker 1: the most physically talented quarterback that any of us have
- 49:55Speaker 1: ever seen. I don't get it. But again, to me,
- 50:00Speaker 1: Anthony Richardson is going to get to play. I don't
- 50:03Speaker 1: know when, but he's going to get to play. Because
- 50:05Speaker 1: the other guy is Daniel Jones. That's not. Y'all might
- 50:08Speaker 1: as well have gone back and got Jacoby Brissett again.
- 50:11Speaker 2: Yeah, Andy Richardson is starting to feel like the Steelers
- 50:13Speaker 2: quarterback of 2026. That is right.
- 50:16Speaker 1: That is right. That is right. But I tell you this.
- 50:17Speaker 1: Say it again. Say it again. You knew. You knew
- 50:21Speaker 1: they was giving that job to Daniel Jones when they
- 50:23Speaker 1: gave him $ 14 million. But you knew they didn't believe
- 50:26Speaker 1: in Anthony Richardson when they weren't the ones to go
- 50:28Speaker 1: get Tyler Huntley or to go get Jameis Winston or
- 50:31Speaker 1: to go get one of the many quarterblacks that would
- 50:34Speaker 1: have bought you time.
- 50:34Speaker 2: Josh Johnson.
- 50:35Speaker 1: Yeah. He's playing for somebody, by the way. I want
- 50:38Speaker 1: to say Washington.
- 50:39Speaker 2: I think he's on a roster.
- 50:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I saw him at Washington. But there were blackups
- 50:43Speaker 1: galore that they could have brought in. Blackups galore. And instead,
- 50:47Speaker 1: cross your fingers about Daniel Jones.
- 50:50Speaker 2: All right. Speaking of a gamble, Malik Beasley is no
- 50:53Speaker 2: longer a target of a federal investigation. His lawyers told
- 50:56Speaker 2: ESPN they had extensive conversations with the Eastern District of
- 50:59Speaker 2: New York. Quote, months after this investigation commenced, Malik remains
- 51:04Speaker 2: uncharged and is not a target of this investigation. An
- 51:07Speaker 2: allegation with no charge, indictment, or conviction should have never
- 51:11Speaker 2: had the catastrophic consequence that has caused Malik. This has
- 51:15Speaker 2: been literally the opposite of perception of innocence.
- 51:21Speaker 1: Sort of. The presumption of innocence part has happened in
- 51:27Speaker 1: that he has not been charged. Correct. Or sent to
- 51:30Speaker 1: jail or any of those things. The problem was you
- 51:33Speaker 1: had to tell the world, hey, this guy's under investigation
- 51:37Speaker 1: for shaving points. You might not want to give him
- 51:39Speaker 1: millions of dollars right now.
- 51:42Speaker 2: Right?
- 51:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 51:42Speaker 2: What else are you going to do?
- 51:43Speaker 1: I don't know what anybody... And he's right. It's really
- 51:46Speaker 1: messed up what happened to him. You know what it is?
- 51:49Speaker 1: You remember when Lyle Collins came out of LSU?
- 51:51Speaker 2: Yep.
- 51:51Speaker 1: And his ex-girlfriend had gotten killed and they just asked
- 51:55Speaker 1: him questions about it, but it was post Aaron.
- 51:57Speaker 2: From the first round and undrafted.
- 51:58Speaker 1: Right, but it was post Aaron Hernandez.
- 52:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 52:01Speaker 1: And so everybody, and the cops were like, yo, we
- 52:03Speaker 1: don't think he did it. And they were like, hey,
- 52:06Speaker 1: you never know.
- 52:07Speaker 2: Right.
- 52:07Speaker 1: So they all left him alone. That's where Beasley wound up. Well,
- 52:11Speaker 1: now all the money's gone. I guess maybe he's going
- 52:14Speaker 1: to need to go to China. Right. I guess the
- 52:16Speaker 1: people that might want to break his legs, they can't
- 52:18Speaker 1: do that in China. I don't know if I need
- 52:19Speaker 1: to break his legs, but we know that boy ain't
- 52:20Speaker 1: got no money. This is a real, real. What is
- 52:24Speaker 1: he going to do? I do think is a very, very, very.
- 52:27Speaker 1: Fair question. I am proud of the right tile, because
- 52:30Speaker 1: remember we had Tom Haberstroh all right after that, and
- 52:32Speaker 1: Haberstroh made it clear, like, no, he doesn't seem to
- 52:34Speaker 1: be doing the point-shaving behaviors.
- 52:37Speaker 2: Yeah, Haberstroh was on that very early.
- 52:41Speaker 1: But I want to know, though, how exactly he then
- 52:42Speaker 1: wound up getting caught up.
- 52:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel like we have more questions than answers.
- 52:48Speaker 1: Like, just because you owe a bunch of people a
- 52:51Speaker 1: bunch of money doesn't mean you've reached the point of
- 52:53Speaker 1: shaving points. Correct. all right so i get where his
- 52:56Speaker 1: people are coming from they i mean they did him
- 52:58Speaker 1: dirty that was a terrible situation um that he wound
- 53:03Speaker 1: up in but he still owes those people a lot
- 53:06Speaker 1: of money.
- 53:06Speaker 2: Yeah he's gonna have to pay that find some way
- 53:09Speaker 2: to pay that bar i.
- 53:10Speaker 1: Was about to say and now he's had to pay
- 53:11Speaker 1: these people back you know what option for him is
- 53:14Speaker 1: now off the table for getting that money Point shaving.
- 53:18Speaker 2: He can't do it.
- 53:20Speaker 1: Now he can't even do that. I don't know what
- 53:22Speaker 1: he ought to do. He ought to start moving bricks.
- 53:24Speaker 1: I got no idea. He need to get this money fast.
- 53:27Speaker 1: Y'all just took right there, go right fast. His way
- 53:29Speaker 1: of doing it, right? All because y'all was being nosy.
- 53:32Speaker 2: All right. Another news. Big fight coming up this November.
- 53:37Speaker 2: Jake Paul is going to fight Gervonta Davis in Atlanta.
- 53:41Speaker 2: They're going to fight on Netflix. And the Jake Paul
- 53:45Speaker 2: circus continues, Boe.
- 53:47Speaker 1: Yo, this is my only issue with this. The numbers
- 53:51Speaker 1: apparently are very high. Like, money-wise. What's going to be
- 53:55Speaker 1: thrown around here? Okay. None of us think that Jake
- 54:00Speaker 1: Paul has any chance in an actual, factual boxing match
- 54:03Speaker 1: with Javante Davis. None of us do.
- 54:05Speaker 2: Even with the very large-sized bench that Jake Paul has.
- 54:09Speaker 1: None of us think. None of us think, right? Like,
- 54:12Speaker 1: we have seen... Okay, I'll put it like this. You
- 54:17Speaker 1: have a huge size advantage over Floyd Mayweather. Right? Right.
- 54:24Speaker 1: Today's Floyd Mayweather, you still think he's still got something
- 54:29Speaker 1: for you. The issue is this. I don't think that Davis– wow,
- 54:33Speaker 1: I have to be honest with you. I didn't realize
- 54:35Speaker 1: he was this little.
- 54:37Speaker 2: No, he's little.
- 54:38Speaker 1: Wow, I misunderstood. Don't they call that boy Tank? That's ironic.
- 54:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I think Tank is for sturdy, not for size.
- 54:47Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. But even then, damn. He only got
- 54:53Speaker 1: to land a couple. This is all he's got to
- 54:58Speaker 1: do is land a couple. None of us think that
- 55:00Speaker 1: Jake Paul can fight a real fighter. We've seen him
- 55:04Speaker 1: fight facsimiles of fighters, the shells of fighters. But this
- 55:09Speaker 1: is an actual, factual fighter. You think Jake Paul can
- 55:13Speaker 1: land any punches against Davis? Now, my question is this.
- 55:22Speaker 1: How hard is Davis allowed to hit this man? Are
- 55:30Speaker 1: we really doing this? And how much money are you...
- 55:34Speaker 1: Does he owe gamblers money? Because I would think that
- 55:37Speaker 1: an actual boxer would have too much dignity to engage
- 55:40Speaker 1: in this.
- 55:42Speaker 2: You would think so.
- 55:43Speaker 1: That's what I would think. But no, Jake. Are people
- 55:47Speaker 1: actually going to watch this one? I understood why people
- 55:50Speaker 1: would watch the Mike Tyson one.
- 55:51Speaker 2: Because it's Tyson.
- 55:53Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think that that went beyond boxing and
- 55:55Speaker 1: got interesting to the general public. Is the general public
- 55:59Speaker 1: going to find this interesting?
- 56:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think casual, even casual sports fans know
- 56:05Speaker 2: who Devontae Davis is.
- 56:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I tell you this. You know my general feelings
- 56:10Speaker 1: about being careful messing with them short people. He is
- 56:12Speaker 1: a short person who is also from Baltimore. That's right.
- 56:17Speaker 1: You know who else you don't want to fight? Muggsy Bogues.
- 56:21Speaker 1: A short person from Baltimore. Ask my homie Rod about
- 56:23Speaker 1: what happened the time somebody tried to press up on
- 56:26Speaker 1: Muggsy Bogues. All right. Did I miss anything else?
- 56:30Speaker 2: This is our last one. You missed the Internet's stupidest
- 56:34Speaker 2: culture war. There was a rebrand at Cracker Barrel. They
- 56:39Speaker 2: changed the logo. They changed the inside decor. And people
- 56:43Speaker 2: were mad. It's as quick as I can summarize. Yeah.
- 56:49Speaker 1: Okay. So the long of the story, long of the
- 56:52Speaker 1: short is the Cracker Barrel logo has a barrel logo.
- 56:59Speaker 1: And a white man in it. They took the barrel
- 57:05Speaker 1: and the white man out of the logo and now
- 57:10Speaker 1: it's just yellow and it says Cracker Barrel. I saw
- 57:15Speaker 1: a lot of the right wing has attempted to use
- 57:18Speaker 1: this to get to party cracking and blame this on
- 57:21Speaker 1: wokeness somehow. The wokeness of Cracker Barrel. Yeah, yeah. So
- 57:25Speaker 1: basically what they're saying is that they took that white
- 57:28Speaker 1: man out the logo and that's where their problem happened.
- 57:32Speaker 1: Not the barrel, just the white man. Not the barrel,
- 57:34Speaker 1: just the white man. You can't have no white man
- 57:36Speaker 1: in there. What I had a bigger problem with, and
- 57:39Speaker 1: I don't care about Cracker Barrel. I don't know the
- 57:41Speaker 1: last time I went to a Cracker Barrel. What I
- 57:44Speaker 1: found interesting about it is the larger continuation of every
- 57:48Speaker 1: logo getting more and more boring. Right. Like the new
- 57:52Speaker 1: logo is just boring. It has no character to it.
- 57:56Speaker 1: Any of those things I want to know. And I
- 57:59Speaker 1: would love to see somebody throw this question to the
- 58:01Speaker 1: people complaining the loudest. Ask them all when the last
- 58:04Speaker 1: time you went to Cracker Barrel. Just throw it out there.
- 58:10Speaker 1: When's the last time you went to Cracker Barrel? Because
- 58:12Speaker 1: I promise you, if you really like Cracker Barrel that much,
- 58:15Speaker 1: all you care about is if them pancakes don't hit.
- 58:17Speaker 1: You're going to keep on going to Cracker Barrel. Y'all
- 58:20Speaker 1: ain't been to no Cracker Barrel in no time.
- 58:23Speaker 2: Sometimes you're between two stops, and that's your only option.
- 58:28Speaker 2: Either you're going to go hungry or you're going to go.
- 58:31Speaker 1: Yeah, but I would just make this point. At some point,
- 58:34Speaker 1: We got to start ignoring these fools.
- 58:36Speaker 2: Right.
- 58:37Speaker 1: So people want to make this foolish argument. We don't
- 58:39Speaker 1: have to do the, this is nasty. Taste this. Right.
- 58:43Speaker 1: Like you don't have to do that. Like I saw
- 58:46Speaker 1: there was some video, some dude that was on his
- 58:48Speaker 1: Instagram live and somebody walked up and shot him and
- 58:50Speaker 1: killed him. And people were like retweeting it and then
- 58:53Speaker 1: saying this should not be posted. But here you go.
- 58:57Speaker 2: Yes.
- 58:58Speaker 1: Right? Like creating the spread of it. No, man. At
- 59:00Speaker 1: some point, we got to let these people just be
- 59:02Speaker 1: stupid and ignore the stupid things that they do. They
- 59:06Speaker 1: are mad that Cracker Barrel changed. Also, had Cracker Barrel
- 59:09Speaker 1: been losing... like a whole lot of everything I.
- 59:12Speaker 2: Can't imagine the market share of Cracker Barrel has been
- 59:14Speaker 2: going up in the last 10 years no.
- 59:16Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying like apparently it's been going down
- 59:17Speaker 1: so they felt like they had to shake something up
- 59:20Speaker 1: and make a change I don't know like maybe if
- 59:23Speaker 1: y'all had been going there and showing more respect to
- 59:25Speaker 1: that white man in that barrel at the time we
- 59:27Speaker 1: wouldn't be here now would we Will we? Yeah, that's
- 59:32Speaker 1: what I thought. But ladies and gentlemen. I was about
- 59:37Speaker 1: to go into the whole spiel, but I want to
- 59:39Speaker 1: let you guys know something. OK, our voicemail number is 323-596-7767.
- 59:45Speaker 1: I'm going to be perfectly honest with you. For the
- 59:47Speaker 1: last seven years, I have been trying to come up
- 59:50Speaker 1: with prompts for you guys to make submissions to the voicemail.
- 59:54Speaker 1: And I am just about all out. I have run
- 59:57Speaker 1: through everything I possibly can have. I thank you all
- 59:59Speaker 1: for your contributions, but we want to always have a
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: part of the podcast that is available for you guys
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: to hear yourselves and to make your contributions and let
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: us all be in this together because us being in
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: this together is very.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: Important to me.
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: So phone number remains 323-596-7767. But the line is now
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: a bit more of an all purpose thing. You got
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: something you want to talk to me about? Throw it
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: on there. You got a question you might want me
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: to answer? Go ahead and hit us up in the voicemail.
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: If you've got something that you just happen to see
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: that was crazy, whatever it is, it doesn't matter. this
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: is truly your chance to talk to me to talk
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: to ryan to talk to us and then every week
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: we will take the best of what we got on
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: the voicemail line and we will package it figure out
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: a way to do something with it however you want
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: to spend it that's what we're going to wind up
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: doing but we are changing it up a little bit
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: we're trying to uh for the last couple years or
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: so i've wanted to find some ways to kind of
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: slap a new coat of paint on things and then
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: i you know i started working at a new place
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: and a lot of things got lost or whatever so
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: we're going to try to Update some things, freshen some
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: things up. I appreciate your patience because part of it
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: is part of I think what has made our show
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: successful for as long as it has been successful is
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: that it has been consistent. But we also need to
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: do things. Honestly, honestly, what is very difficult for me
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: in this new age of the ways that we communicate
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: with each other is communication. There are no longer what
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: I consider to be healthy ways for me to engage
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: with you, the audience. Social media is toxic in a
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: way where I don't hear anything from you guys. It's
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: hard for me to tell what is worthwhile to hear
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: because so much is bodied out and everything else. But
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: what I enjoy most about doing this show is the
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: and everything that I've done in this career, really, for
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: the last 25 years is. is the connection with the
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: audience that I have. And so we want to make
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: this a better way for us all to be connected
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: with one another. So please give us a call at 323-596-7767.
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: Say what you got to say, ask what you got,
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: and we'll go from there. And as always, I greatly,
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: greatly appreciate you guys. And ladies and gentlemen, thanks so
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: much for joining us here on The Right Time. We
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: do this thing here three times a week. Brian Brumley
