- 1:05Speaker 2: What's up, Leggy?
- 1:06Speaker 7: How are we doing? Follows?
- 1:08Speaker 6: How are the the preparations for the draft going for you?
- 1:12Speaker 2: Are we done with the top one hundred list?
- 1:14Speaker 5: Is is it over?
- 1:16Speaker 7: Well?
- 1:17Speaker 8: It's almost getting turned in, so we're in the closing
- 1:20Speaker 8: we're in the final steps.
- 1:22Speaker 2: What's the date that gets released? When does it drop?
- 1:24Speaker 7: I mean they told me Sunday, so I don't know.
- 1:27Speaker 8: It could be Saturday or Sunday, but I think right
- 1:29Speaker 8: now it's going to be Sunday morning.
- 1:30Speaker 3: And again, these are your top one hundred, not by
- 1:33Speaker 3: where you think they'll be drafted, baximically, by pure talent.
- 1:36Speaker 7: Just grades, yeah, just grades. You know. It's funny.
- 1:40Speaker 8: Back in the day, one hundred was a big number
- 1:43Speaker 8: for this because very few people, if any, were doing it.
- 1:46Speaker 7: But now the pool is so big.
- 1:48Speaker 8: There's top three hundreds, there's top six hundreds.
- 1:51Speaker 7: But I've always just kept it.
- 1:54Speaker 8: This way because it just it's forty years ago it
- 1:57Speaker 8: started this way, So I'll just keep it a one hundred.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Can I keep it one hundred?
- 2:01Speaker 1: I'm gonna make it.
- 2:02Speaker 2: As the kids would say, I don't.
- 2:04Speaker 4: Care who you are, and I don't care how much
- 2:06Speaker 4: free time you have, and I don't care how big
- 2:08Speaker 4: of a geek you are.
- 2:10Speaker 7: The rate.
- 2:10Speaker 1: No way any human being.
- 2:12Speaker 4: On planet Earth is scouting six hundred dudes and ranking them.
- 2:17Speaker 1: And if you are, you're a fake. Who can you
- 2:20Speaker 1: tell me who's doing it.
- 2:23Speaker 8: Well, I mean, if you're gonna really do one hundred
- 2:25Speaker 8: or one fifty, you're gonna have to do You're gonna
- 2:28Speaker 8: have to at least get information on five hundred or
- 2:31Speaker 8: six hundred guys.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Well, you just.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Called LEGI a nerd. How's that sound mine?
- 2:36Speaker 1: But my five hundred and eighty third player is na
- 2:39Speaker 1: what evs?
- 2:41Speaker 4: No?
- 2:41Speaker 7: I mean, you know, it's it's a lot of It's
- 2:44Speaker 7: just the industry.
- 2:45Speaker 8: We love lists, you guys know, and we all love lists,
- 2:48Speaker 8: rank and top ten, top you know, mount Rushmore players,
- 2:53Speaker 8: all of those things.
- 2:54Speaker 7: We love them.
- 2:55Speaker 8: So it's you know, it's just it's funny to me
- 2:58Speaker 8: because when I first started doing that, uh, there was
- 3:01Speaker 8: almost nobody doing it in the newspaper business.
- 3:04Speaker 7: Yeah, and there.
- 3:05Speaker 8: Weren't many people doing it outside of the newspaper business.
- 3:09Speaker 8: And now it's it's just a whole thing.
- 3:12Speaker 4: I'll tell you what I do love about what you
- 3:14Speaker 4: do in this regard. I love it every single year
- 3:16Speaker 4: because yours is based on your predictions, I mean not predictions,
- 3:20Speaker 4: but your talent. Your talent list right not where they're
- 3:23Speaker 4: going to go. It's fun to go back and see teams,
- 3:25Speaker 4: in my opinion, and maybe your opinion that reach a
- 3:27Speaker 4: little bit. What's going on right now with Shador because
- 3:30Speaker 4: apparently he's got this private workout with the New York Giants.
- 3:33Speaker 4: I just we and we know about the Saints and
- 3:36Speaker 4: we're just reading articles Jeff that hey, the Raiders are
- 3:38Speaker 4: getting a little bit hot and bothered about him as
- 3:41Speaker 4: well at six what And I know he's not right
- 3:44Speaker 4: there in your list right, he's a little bit down further.
- 3:45Speaker 4: But but that's going to prove that, you know, the
- 3:49Speaker 4: teams will reach and teams will go for specific guys.
- 3:52Speaker 7: Quarterbacks especially most no.
- 3:54Speaker 8: No, through history, I've I've always said there are two
- 3:58Speaker 8: draft boards. There's a quarterback board and there's everybody else.
- 4:02Speaker 8: Because I think even you know, every team in the
- 4:08Speaker 8: in their draft rooms this year is gonna have this
- 4:11Speaker 8: hoard of analytic guys they've they've hired now and every
- 4:16Speaker 8: team that needs a quarterback will sort of shun all
- 4:20Speaker 8: of the numbers about taking them where they're where they're
- 4:23Speaker 8: going to take them, especially in this class. So, uh,
- 4:26Speaker 8: quarterbacks are always overdrafted because the potential reward if you
- 4:32Speaker 8: get it right, is just franchise changing. And honestly, uh,
- 4:39Speaker 8: but the guy who's in Bolden everybody to do it
- 4:43Speaker 8: even a little more since is Mahomes. It worked out
- 4:47Speaker 8: for the Chiefs and and Mahomes was a player who
- 4:52Speaker 8: forced a lot of us who who do the draft.
- 4:55Speaker 7: Thing, including gms in the league.
- 4:58Speaker 8: And pro personnel guy and everybody, to reevaluate or kind
- 5:02Speaker 8: of look again how they were grating guys because I
- 5:07Speaker 8: think he was a poorly graded player by most of
- 5:11Speaker 8: the league, by me, by a lot of people. And
- 5:14Speaker 8: since then, look at how the quarterback drafts have gone
- 5:19Speaker 8: because the Chiefs got it right and it changed everything
- 5:22Speaker 8: in the entire league.
- 5:25Speaker 3: I need to ask you about the Pittsburgh Steelers' mindset
- 5:28Speaker 3: right now. And I get it they may have to
- 5:33Speaker 3: move up to go get a Shud or Sanders. They're
- 5:36Speaker 3: currently twenty one in the draft. I mean they're gonna
- 5:38Speaker 3: have to if they.
- 5:40Speaker 5: Really want that is the fact that they're.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Contemplating that possibly getting a quarterback.
- 5:46Speaker 5: Is that why Aaron Rodgers is not a Steeler today?
- 5:51Speaker 4: Vic?
- 5:51Speaker 8: I think again, this is from talking to a lot
- 5:54Speaker 8: of people in the league and including some people I
- 5:56Speaker 8: know in Pittsburgh. With the Steelers, I think it's more
- 6:00Speaker 8: of a combination. It's not one reason that that hasn't happened.
- 6:06Speaker 8: You know, the Steelers through the years, even when I
- 6:09Speaker 8: covered them in the in the early nineties, have always
- 6:14Speaker 8: done things their own way. They're very you know, Look,
- 6:19Speaker 8: they've hired three coaches in the time other teams have
- 6:22Speaker 8: hired you know, fifteen, So they do things a little differently.
- 6:28Speaker 8: They don't rush into things, they don't do things impulsively,
- 6:33Speaker 8: and it would take a lot for them to trade
- 6:36Speaker 8: up there. They've got sort of you know, the Ravens
- 6:39Speaker 8: and the Steelers have the mindset of sure, we'll trade up,
- 6:44Speaker 8: but it's going to have to be a very drastic,
- 6:47Speaker 8: you know move. And the problem this year is it's
- 6:51Speaker 8: a it's a very good draft board rounds two through five,
- 6:55Speaker 8: but the first round is really thin, and you know,
- 6:59Speaker 8: teams that are down where the Steelers are, where the
- 7:02Speaker 8: Broncos are, are all going to be on their tiptoes
- 7:05Speaker 8: because they might have to trade to get their guys.
- 7:09Speaker 8: So I think this year the odds of the Steelers
- 7:12Speaker 8: trying to make a move are a little higher than
- 7:15Speaker 8: previous years. And if Rogers are going to make teams wait,
- 7:20Speaker 8: including the Steelers, you better have a plan B or
- 7:25Speaker 8: a plan, you know, co A. You know if you
- 7:28Speaker 8: sign them, you still want a young guy because you know,
- 7:31Speaker 8: if they signed Rogers, it's a short term solution that's
- 7:35Speaker 8: not a down the road for the franchise. So they
- 7:38Speaker 8: they've got to think quarterback in the first round. The
- 7:41Speaker 8: Saints have to think quarterback in the first round. They
- 7:45Speaker 8: just have to, whether they like it or not.
- 7:47Speaker 6: Leg You just saw this that Travis Hunter I was
- 7:51Speaker 6: asked what would he say to an NFL team that
- 7:53Speaker 6: made him choose cornerback or wide receiver? And the quote is,
- 7:58Speaker 6: it's never playing foot again. I've been doing it my
- 8:01Speaker 6: whole life. I love being on the football field. I
- 8:03Speaker 6: feel like I could dominate, to dominate each side of
- 8:06Speaker 6: the ball. I really enjoyed doing it. He's saying that
- 8:08Speaker 6: he would tell them he's not playing football if they
- 8:10Speaker 6: don't let him do both.
- 8:12Speaker 7: Well, I don't think he's saying full time.
- 8:14Speaker 8: You know, if that means full time one position and
- 8:18Speaker 8: two plays a game the other side of the ball,
- 8:21Speaker 8: that's playing two way technically. So I think that's one
- 8:25Speaker 8: of those things. You know, it's great to say, but
- 8:28Speaker 8: you know he isn't going to be given the choice.
- 8:31Speaker 8: I hate to break it to him, But a team
- 8:34Speaker 8: who picks him, you know, better have a plan because
- 8:39Speaker 8: you know, in Boulder he played two ways and it
- 8:42Speaker 8: was spectacular and it's it's one of the great things
- 8:46Speaker 8: I've seen in college football in a very long time.
- 8:49Speaker 8: But he didn't do anything on the field until Wednesdays
- 8:54Speaker 8: most week, and that's not going to fly in the NFL.
- 8:57Speaker 8: It's just not So he's gonna have to handle his
- 9:02Speaker 8: game day business in whatever works in the practice and
- 9:07Speaker 8: meeting schedule of Monday through Saturday.
- 9:11Speaker 6: Like you've been here for a while, Just curious what
- 9:13Speaker 6: you think about this, because the two guys that we've
- 9:15Speaker 6: asked you about, Shador and Travis Hunter, are gonna have
- 9:18Speaker 6: their jerseys retired during the spring game this weekend. Just
- 9:22Speaker 6: what do you feel about that? Just immediately after they're done,
- 9:24Speaker 6: they're going to hang the numbers up. There's only four
- 9:26Speaker 6: previous Buffs that have had their jerseys retired.
- 9:29Speaker 8: What do you think, Well, you know, I think maybe
- 9:33Speaker 8: they're trying to do more of those. Maybe maybe a
- 9:37Speaker 8: school like so you should have more than four retired.
- 9:41Speaker 8: I don't know about a waiting period. It's college football.
- 9:44Speaker 8: It's not like they're you know, gonna come back around
- 9:48Speaker 8: or something. It's you know, Travis Hunter especially, I'm not
- 9:52Speaker 8: sure we'll ever see a player do the things he
- 9:56Speaker 8: did while he was in Boulder, So you know, I guess,
- 10:01Speaker 8: I guess I'm not like crazed. I mean, both my
- 10:04Speaker 8: kids went there, so you know, I've been around campus,
- 10:09Speaker 8: you know, here and there. I don't have a beef
- 10:13Speaker 8: with it. I certainly think, you know, list any players
- 10:17Speaker 8: and see you history. It's hard to find, especially in
- 10:20Speaker 8: Travis Hunter's case, It's hard to find a player with
- 10:23Speaker 8: that kind of resume.
- 10:24Speaker 4: I certainly is hey, real quick, Jeff reading through. We
- 10:28Speaker 4: know what the Broncos need, But are the running backs?
- 10:32Speaker 4: Is this a resurgent year for running backs or is
- 10:35Speaker 4: there going to be a run? Because now that I'm
- 10:37Speaker 4: starting to see some of these mocks, my goodness, gracious,
- 10:40Speaker 4: they've got these guys kicking up and kicking up and
- 10:42Speaker 4: kicking up.
- 10:44Speaker 8: Yeah, I think there's so many. I don't think teams
- 10:47Speaker 8: will push them up the board. But that's that's just
- 10:50Speaker 8: my personal opinion. I think GENTI is the only true
- 10:55Speaker 8: first round grade.
- 10:57Speaker 7: But that said, it's it's the best class I've seen
- 11:01Speaker 7: in decades.
- 11:02Speaker 8: Of running backs, So the Broncos could get one who
- 11:06Speaker 8: fit their offense, who fits their offense in round two,
- 11:11Speaker 8: round three, round four, round five, easy.
- 11:15Speaker 7: At any time they pick.
- 11:18Speaker 8: It will be hard for me to believe that a
- 11:20Speaker 8: running back is not one of the best players they
- 11:23Speaker 8: have remaining on the board.
- 11:24Speaker 3: What is the most important attribute for one of these
- 11:28Speaker 3: running backs to fit into a Sean Payton offense?
- 11:31Speaker 8: If you want to play on second anything you know
- 11:36Speaker 8: beyond second and short, you better be able to catch
- 11:39Speaker 8: the ball, run precise routes, and you better be make
- 11:44Speaker 8: good choices in pass protection. It's why Javonte Williams. You
- 11:49Speaker 8: know everybody kept basking why is DeVante Williams getting all
- 11:51Speaker 8: those snaps on third down? Is because he was the
- 11:54Speaker 8: best pass protector of any of the running backs the
- 11:59Speaker 8: Broncos had. And in this draft, the two best past
- 12:03Speaker 8: protecting running backs in my opinion are Treveon Henderson and
- 12:08Speaker 8: Trevor Atn Those are the two guys I would keep
- 12:11Speaker 8: an eye on, and Dylan Samson. Those are the three
- 12:14Speaker 8: running backs I would keep an eye on if I
- 12:16Speaker 8: was a Bronco fan.
- 12:17Speaker 3: So when you're watching film of these guys and you're
- 12:21Speaker 3: assessing past protection. Is it their physicality, is it their smarts?
- 12:26Speaker 3: What do they do that's better than others in the past.
- 12:28Speaker 8: Pro Well, part of it's hard, vic because a lot
- 12:31Speaker 8: of guys aren't ever asked to do it, you know.
- 12:33Speaker 7: And in the college game.
- 12:37Speaker 8: Outside of the SEC, you don't see a lot of
- 12:40Speaker 8: rush coverage combos that force running backs to have to
- 12:44Speaker 8: stay in. In the SEC, it's a different deal, and
- 12:48Speaker 8: that's why it's frankly, it's easier to evaluate players there
- 12:52Speaker 8: because it's good on good all the time. But you
- 12:57Speaker 8: have to make good choices. You got to pick the
- 12:59Speaker 8: right rusher.
- 13:00Speaker 7: Uh.
- 13:00Speaker 8: You can't cross the face of the quarterback and mess
- 13:04Speaker 8: up the play if if you've if you've made the
- 13:06Speaker 8: wrong choice, and you've got to be willing to get
- 13:09Speaker 8: in there and do it. You know you're you're gonna
- 13:12Speaker 8: be smashing a player a lot bigger than you most
- 13:15Speaker 8: of the time. So, but it's all of it, and
- 13:18Speaker 8: it's a hard skill. It's an undervalued skill among us
- 13:22Speaker 8: outside but coaches. You talk to a running back coach
- 13:27Speaker 8: uh about running backs before the draft, and you ask
- 13:30Speaker 8: a running back coach about anybody, uh, the two things
- 13:33Speaker 8: you always get are you know, does he does he
- 13:36Speaker 8: make the guy missing the hole? You know, the one
- 13:40Speaker 8: on one? And can he play on third down? And
- 13:43Speaker 8: that's those are the two things that are pro evaluator
- 13:47Speaker 8: wants in a running back. And it's not what we
- 13:50Speaker 8: talk about, you know, sort of on the fantasy football level,
- 13:54Speaker 8: but you don't get third down snaps as a young
- 13:56Speaker 8: running back if you can't block in pass protection.
- 13:59Speaker 6: Lakey, really quick, We're gonna talk to you again on Thursday.
- 14:02Speaker 6: If if I promise not to do this on Thursday,
- 14:06Speaker 6: can I ask for somebody beyond seventieth on your top
- 14:09Speaker 6: one hundred?
- 14:10Speaker 7: Now you're getting Thursday. If your time to dive in
- 14:13Speaker 7: my friend?
- 14:13Speaker 1: Oh, he just wait.
- 14:14Speaker 5: You're gonna make me wait till Thursday. Yeah, he just didn't.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Fine, he makes you wait every year. This should be different.
- 14:23Speaker 7: I got professional guidelines. I gotta live in Well.
- 14:26Speaker 1: I was just it's gonna drop on.
- 14:27Speaker 5: I need to get one little sneak somewhere something.
- 14:29Speaker 1: I gotta wait till Thursday.
- 14:30Speaker 5: It's fine to your shot got rejected.
- 14:32Speaker 3: You were making the rounds at Thursday's and three girls said, Nope,
- 14:36Speaker 3: I'm not there.
- 14:37Speaker 1: I think our deal was you had to do a
- 14:39Speaker 1: TikTok dance.
- 14:40Speaker 6: If you weren't giving me a top one hundred, I
- 14:42Speaker 6: think that was our deal.
- 14:43Speaker 7: I would never make such a deal with you. You
- 14:46Speaker 7: know that.
- 14:46Speaker 1: You know what that just so you know what that
- 14:48Speaker 1: just sounded like to me.
- 14:49Speaker 4: Jeff, Hey, Margot, Robbie, it's Brett Kane, go to hell.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Just a straight stiff arm. Take that on the wall.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Lake you. I will ask again in two days, so
- 14:58Speaker 2: be prepared for that.
- 15:00Speaker 7: I am prepared, Doug gat and prepared.
- 15:02Speaker 2: All right, buddy. I always appreciate talking to you.
- 15:04Speaker 7: Thanks, Dave Ballance.
