- 0:00Speaker 1: The fourth Book of the Sacrament of the Altar, Chapters
- 0:06Speaker 1: one to ten, a devout exhortation to the Holy Communion.
- 0:13Speaker 1: The voice of Christ come unto me, all ye that
- 0:18Speaker 1: labor and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Matthew eleven, verse twenty eight. Saith the Lord. The bread
- 0:28Speaker 1: that I will give is my flesh, which I give
- 0:31Speaker 1: for the life of the world. John six, verse fifty one.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Take eat. This is my body which is given for you.
- 0:43Speaker 1: This do in remembrance of me. Matthew twenty one, verse
- 0:48Speaker 1: twenty six. Luke twenty two, verse nineteen. He that eateth
- 0:54Speaker 1: my flesh and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me and
- 0:58Speaker 1: I in him. The words that I speak unto you,
- 1:02Speaker 1: they are spirit and they are life. John six, verses
- 1:08Speaker 1: fifty one and sixty three, Chapter one, with how great
- 1:15Speaker 1: reverence Christ must be received the voice of the Disciple.
- 1:23Speaker 1: These are Thy words O Christ, eternal truth, though not
- 1:28Speaker 1: uttered at one time, nor written together in one place
- 1:31Speaker 1: of scripture. Because therefore they are Thy words and true,
- 1:38Speaker 1: I must gratefully and faithfully receive them. All they are thine,
- 1:43Speaker 1: and thou hast uttered them, and they are mine also
- 1:47Speaker 1: because Thou didst speak them for my salvation. Gladly I
- 1:52Speaker 1: receive them from thy mouth, that they may be more
- 1:56Speaker 1: deeply implanted in my heart. The words of such great
- 2:01Speaker 1: grace arouse me, for they are full of sweetness and love.
- 2:06Speaker 1: But my own sins terrify me, and my impure conscience
- 2:11Speaker 1: driveth me away from receiving so great mysteries. The sweetness
- 2:17Speaker 1: of thy words encourageth me, but the multitude of my
- 2:21Speaker 1: faults presseth me down. Thou commandest that I draw near
- 2:28Speaker 1: to THEE with firm confidence, if I would have part
- 2:32Speaker 1: with THEE, and that I receive the food of immortality.
- 2:36Speaker 1: If I desire to obtain eternal life and glory, come
- 2:41Speaker 1: unto me, sayest thou, all that labor and are heavy laden,
- 2:46Speaker 1: and I will refresh you, oh sweet and lovely word,
- 2:51Speaker 1: in the ear of the sinner, that thou, o Lord,
- 2:54Speaker 1: my God, dost invite the poor and needy to the
- 2:58Speaker 1: communion of thy most holy body and blood. But who
- 3:03Speaker 1: am i, O Lord, that I should presume to approach
- 3:06Speaker 1: unto THEE. Behold, the heaven of heavens cannot contain THEE.
- 3:12Speaker 1: And yet thou sayest, come ye all unto me. What
- 3:19Speaker 1: meaneth this most gracious condescension, this most lovely invitation? How
- 3:26Speaker 1: shall I dare to come, who know no good thing
- 3:29Speaker 1: of myself? Whence I might be able to presume? How
- 3:33Speaker 1: shall I bring THEE within my house? Seeing that I
- 3:37Speaker 1: so often have sinned? In thy most loving sight? Angels
- 3:43Speaker 1: and arch angels stand in awe of THEE. The saints
- 3:47Speaker 1: and just men fear THEE. And thou sayest come unto me,
- 3:53Speaker 1: Except thou Lord hast said it, who should believe it true?
- 3:58Speaker 1: And except thou thou hast commanded, who should attempt to
- 4:03Speaker 1: draw near? Behold Noah, that just man labored for a
- 4:10Speaker 1: hundred years in building the ark, that he might be
- 4:13Speaker 1: saved with the few. And I, how shall I be
- 4:17Speaker 1: able in one hour to prepare myself to receive the
- 4:21Speaker 1: builder of the world with reverence? Moses, thy servant, thy
- 4:27Speaker 1: great and especial friend, made an ark of incorruptible wood,
- 4:32Speaker 1: which also he covered with purest gold, that he might
- 4:36Speaker 1: lay up in it the tables of the Law. And
- 4:39Speaker 1: I a corruptible creature? Shall I dare thus easily to
- 4:44Speaker 1: receive THEE, the maker of the Law and the giver
- 4:47Speaker 1: of life. Solomon the wisest of the kings of Israel,
- 4:53Speaker 1: was seven years building his magnificent temple to the praise
- 4:57Speaker 1: of thy name, and for eight days celebrated the feast
- 5:01Speaker 1: of its dedication, offering a thousand peace offerings, and solemnly
- 5:06Speaker 1: brought up the ark of the Covenant to the place
- 5:09Speaker 1: prepared for it, with the sound of trumpets and great joy.
- 5:14Speaker 1: And I unhappy and poorest of mankind, how shall I
- 5:20Speaker 1: bring THEE into my house, who scarcely know how to
- 5:23Speaker 1: spend half an hour in devotion? Oh that it were
- 5:28Speaker 1: even one half hour worthily spent? O my God, how
- 5:35Speaker 1: earnestly these holy men strove to please thee? And alas,
- 5:40Speaker 1: how little and trifling is that which I do? How
- 5:44Speaker 1: short a time do I spend when I am disposing
- 5:47Speaker 1: myself to communion, rarely altogether collected, most rarely cleansed from
- 5:55Speaker 1: all distraction, And surely, in the saving presence of Thy Godhead,
- 6:01Speaker 1: no unmeet thought ought to intrude, nor should any creature
- 6:06Speaker 1: take possession of me, because it is not an angel,
- 6:09Speaker 1: but the Lord of the Angels, that I am about
- 6:12Speaker 1: to receive as my guest. Yet there is a vast
- 6:17Speaker 1: difference between the Ark of the Covenant with its relics,
- 6:22Speaker 1: and thy most pure body, with its ineffable virtues. Between
- 6:27Speaker 1: those sacrifices of the Law, which were figures of things
- 6:31Speaker 1: to come, and the true sacrifice of thy body, the
- 6:36Speaker 1: completion of all the ancient sacrifices. Wherefore, then do I
- 6:42Speaker 1: not yearn more ardently after Thy adorable presence. Why do
- 6:48Speaker 1: I not prepare myself with greater solicitude to receive Thy
- 6:53Speaker 1: holy things? When those holy patriarchs and prophets of old
- 6:58Speaker 1: kings also and pre rinces with the whole people manifested
- 7:03Speaker 1: so great affection of devotion towards Thy divine service. The
- 7:11Speaker 1: most devout King David danced with all his might before
- 7:15Speaker 1: the Ark of God, calling to mind the benefits granted
- 7:19Speaker 1: to his forefathers in days past. He fashioned musical instruments
- 7:24Speaker 1: of various sorts, put forth psalms, and appointed them to
- 7:29Speaker 1: be song with joy, played also himself ofttimes on the harp.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Being inspired with the grace of the Holy Ghost. He
- 7:38Speaker 1: taught the people of Israel to praise God with the
- 7:41Speaker 1: whole heart and with unity of voice, to bless and
- 7:45Speaker 1: praise Him every day. If so great devotion was then exercised,
- 7:52Speaker 1: and celebration of divine praise was carried on before the
- 7:56Speaker 1: ark of the testimony. How great reverence had devotion ought
- 8:01Speaker 1: now to be shown by me and all Christian people
- 8:05Speaker 1: at the ministering of the sacrament, at receiving the most
- 8:09Speaker 1: precious body and blood of Christ. Many run to diverse
- 8:16Speaker 1: places to visit the memorials of departed saints and rejoice
- 8:21Speaker 1: to hear of their deeds, and to look upon the
- 8:24Speaker 1: beautiful buildings of their shrines. And behold, Thou art present
- 8:30Speaker 1: here with me O, my God, Saint of saints, Creator
- 8:34Speaker 1: of men, and Lord of the angels. Often in looking
- 8:39Speaker 1: at those memorials, men are moved by curiosity and novelty,
- 8:44Speaker 1: and very little fruit of amendment is borne away, especially
- 8:48Speaker 1: when there is so much careless trifling and so little
- 8:51Speaker 1: true contrition. But here in the sacrament of the Altar,
- 8:57Speaker 1: thou art present altogether, my God, the Man Christ Jesus,
- 9:03Speaker 1: where also abundant fruit of eternal life is given to
- 9:07Speaker 1: every one soever that receiveth thee worthily and devoutly. But
- 9:13Speaker 1: to this no levity draweth, no curiosity nor sensuality, only
- 9:19Speaker 1: steadfast faith, devout hope, and sincere charity, O, God, invisible
- 9:29Speaker 1: creator of the world. How wondrously dost thou work with us,
- 9:34Speaker 1: How sweetly and graciously thou dealest with thine elect to
- 9:38Speaker 1: whom thou offerest thyself to be received in this sacrament.
- 9:43Speaker 1: For this surpasseth all understanding. This specially draweth the hearts
- 9:49Speaker 1: of the devout, and enkindleth their affections. For even thy
- 9:55Speaker 1: true faithful ones themselves, who order their whole life to amend,
- 10:01Speaker 1: oftentimes gain from this most excellent sacrament great grace of
- 10:06Speaker 1: devotion and love of virtue, O admirable and hidden grace
- 10:13Speaker 1: of the sacrament, which only Christ's faithful ones know, but
- 10:18Speaker 1: the faithless and those who serve sin cannot experience. In
- 10:24Speaker 1: this sacrament is conferred spiritual grace, and lost virtue is
- 10:29Speaker 1: regained in the soul, and the beauty which was disfigured
- 10:33Speaker 1: by sin returneth again. So great sometimes is this grace,
- 10:40Speaker 1: that out of the fullness of devotion given not only
- 10:43Speaker 1: the mind but also the weak body, feeleth that more
- 10:47Speaker 1: strength is supplied unto it. But greatly must we mourn
- 10:53Speaker 1: and lament over our luke warmness and negligence, that we
- 10:58Speaker 1: are not drawn by greater affection to become partakers of Christ,
- 11:03Speaker 1: in whom all the hope and the merit of those
- 11:06Speaker 1: that are to be saved consist. For He himself is
- 11:11Speaker 1: our sanctification and redemption one Corinthians, one, verse thirty. He
- 11:19Speaker 1: is the consolation of pilgrims and the eternal fruition of
- 11:23Speaker 1: the saints. Therefore, it is grievously to be lamented that
- 11:28Speaker 1: many so little consider this health giving mystery, which maketh
- 11:33Speaker 1: Heaven glad and preserveth the whole world. Alas for the
- 11:39Speaker 1: blindness and hardness of man's heart, that he considereth not
- 11:44Speaker 1: more this unspeakable gift, and even slippeth down through the
- 11:48Speaker 1: daily use into carelessness. For if this most holy sacrament
- 11:55Speaker 1: were celebrated in one place only, and were consecrated only
- 12:00Speaker 1: by one priest in the whole world, with what great
- 12:04Speaker 1: desire thinkest thou, would men be affected towards that place,
- 12:09Speaker 1: and towards such a priest of God, that they might
- 12:13Speaker 1: behold the divine mysteries celebrated. But now are many men
- 12:18Speaker 1: made priests, and in many places the sacrament is celebrated,
- 12:23Speaker 1: that the grace and love of God towards men might.
- 12:26Speaker 1: The more appear, the more widely the Holy Communion is
- 12:30Speaker 1: spread abroad over all the world. Thanks be unto THEE,
- 12:35Speaker 1: O Good Jesus eternal Shepherd, who hast vouchsafed to refresh
- 12:41Speaker 1: us poor and exiled ones with thy precious body and blood,
- 12:46Speaker 1: and to invite us to partake these holy mysteries by
- 12:50Speaker 1: the invitation from thine own mouth, saying, come unto me,
- 12:56Speaker 1: ye who labor and are heavy laden, and I will
- 12:59Speaker 1: refresh you. Chapter two, that the greatness and charity of
- 13:07Speaker 1: God is shown to men in the sacrament the voice
- 13:12Speaker 1: of the disciple, trusting in Thy goodness and great mercy,
- 13:17Speaker 1: O Lord, I draw near the sick to the healer,
- 13:22Speaker 1: the hungering and thirsting to the fountain of life, the
- 13:26Speaker 1: poverty stricken to the King of Heaven, the servant to
- 13:30Speaker 1: the Lord, the creature to the Creator, the desolate to
- 13:36Speaker 1: my own gentle comforter. But whence is this unto me
- 13:42Speaker 1: that thou comest unto me? Who am I that thou
- 13:46Speaker 1: shouldst offer me thyself? How doth a sinner dare to
- 13:52Speaker 1: appear before THEE? And how dost thou vouchsafe to come
- 13:56Speaker 1: to the sinner. Thou knowest thy servant, and thou knowest
- 14:02Speaker 1: that he hath in him no good thing for which
- 14:04Speaker 1: thou shouldest grant him disgrace. I confess therefore mine own vileness.
- 14:12Speaker 1: I acknowledge thy goodness. I praise thy tenderness, and I
- 14:18Speaker 1: give THEE thanks for thine exceeding great love. For Thou
- 14:23Speaker 1: doest this for thine own sake, not for my merits,
- 14:27Speaker 1: that thy goodness may be more manifest unto me, thy
- 14:31Speaker 1: charity more abundantly poured out upon me, and thy humility
- 14:37Speaker 1: more perfectly commended unto me. Therefore, because this pleaseth THEE,
- 14:44Speaker 1: and thou hast commanded that thus it shall be, Thy
- 14:48Speaker 1: condescension pleaseth me also, And O that mine iniquity hinder it, not, O,
- 14:56Speaker 1: most sweet and tender Jesus, What reverence, what giving of
- 15:02Speaker 1: thanks is due to THEE with perpetual praise for the
- 15:06Speaker 1: receiving of Thy sacred body and blood, the dignity whereof
- 15:11Speaker 1: no man is found able to express. But what shall
- 15:15Speaker 1: I think upon in this communion, in approaching my Lord,
- 15:20Speaker 1: whom I am not able worthily to honor, and nevertheless,
- 15:24Speaker 1: whom I long devoutly to receive. What shall be better
- 15:29Speaker 1: and more healthful meditation for me than utter humiliation of
- 15:35Speaker 1: myself before THEE and exaltation of Thine infinite goodness towards me.
- 15:42Speaker 1: I praise THEE, O, my God, and exalt THEE. For
- 15:46Speaker 1: evermore I despise myself and cast myself down before THEE
- 15:52Speaker 1: into the deep of my vileness. Behold, Thou art the
- 15:59Speaker 1: saint saints, and I the refuse of sinners. Behold thou
- 16:06Speaker 1: stoopest unto me, who am not worthy to look upon THEE.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Behold thou comest unto me. Thou willest to be with me,
- 16:17Speaker 1: Thou invitest me to thy feast. Thou willest to give
- 16:22Speaker 1: me the heavenly food and bread of angels, to eat
- 16:26Speaker 1: none other in truth than thyself, the living bread, which
- 16:32Speaker 1: didst descend from Heaven and givest life to the world.
- 16:37Speaker 1: John six, verse fifty one. Behold, whence this love proceedeth,
- 16:45Speaker 1: what manner of condescension shineth forth herein What great giving
- 16:51Speaker 1: of thanks and praise is due unto THEE for these benefits? O,
- 16:56Speaker 1: how salutary and profitable thy purpose. When thou didst ordain this,
- 17:03Speaker 1: how sweet and pleasant the feast, when thou didst give
- 17:06Speaker 1: thyself for food. O, how admirable is thy working, O Lord,
- 17:12Speaker 1: how mighty thy power, how unspeakable thy truth. For thou
- 17:19Speaker 1: didst speak the word, and all things were made. And
- 17:23Speaker 1: this is done which thou hast commanded, a thing wonderful
- 17:30Speaker 1: and worthy of faith, and surpassing all understanding of man.
- 17:35Speaker 1: That Thou, o, Lord, my God, very God and very man,
- 17:40Speaker 1: givest thyself altogether to us in a little bread and
- 17:44Speaker 1: wine and art, so our inexhaustible food. Thou, o, Lord
- 17:50Speaker 1: of all, who hast need of nothing, hast willed to
- 17:54Speaker 1: dwell in us through thy sacrament. Preserve my heart and
- 17:59Speaker 1: my body undefiled, that with a joyful and pure conscience
- 18:04Speaker 1: I may be able very often to receive to my
- 18:08Speaker 1: perpetual health thy mysteries which thou hast consecrated and instituted,
- 18:15Speaker 1: both for thine honor and for a perpetual memorial. Rejoice, O,
- 18:23Speaker 1: my soul, and give thanks unto God for so great
- 18:27Speaker 1: a gift and precious consolation left unto thee in this
- 18:32Speaker 1: veil of tears. For so oft as thou callest this
- 18:37Speaker 1: mystery to mind and receivest the body of Christ. So
- 18:42Speaker 1: often dost thou celebrate the work of Thy redemption and
- 18:46Speaker 1: art made partaker of all the merits of Christ. For
- 18:51Speaker 1: the charity of Christ never groweth less, and the greatness
- 18:55Speaker 1: of His propitiation is never exhausted. Therefore, by continual renewal
- 19:02Speaker 1: of thy spirit, thou oughtest to dispose thyself hereunto and
- 19:07Speaker 1: to weigh the great mystery of salvation with attentive consideration.
- 19:13Speaker 1: So great, new and joyful ought it to appear to
- 19:18Speaker 1: THEE when thou comest to communion, as if on this
- 19:22Speaker 1: self same day Christ, for the first time were descended
- 19:26Speaker 1: into the Virgin's womb and becoming man, or hanging on
- 19:30Speaker 1: the cross, suffering and dying for the salvation of mankind.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Chapter three, that it is profitable to communicate often the
- 19:44Speaker 1: voice of the disciple. Behold, I come unto THEE, O Lord,
- 19:51Speaker 1: that I may be blessed through Thy gift, and be
- 19:54Speaker 1: made joyful in thy holy feast, which thou, o God
- 19:59Speaker 1: a thy goodness, hast prepared for the poor Psalm sixty eight,
- 20:05Speaker 1: verse ten. Behold in THEE is all that I can
- 20:10Speaker 1: and ought to desire. Thou art my salvation and redemption,
- 20:15Speaker 1: my hope and strength, my honor and glory. Therefore, rejoice
- 20:22Speaker 1: the soul of thy servant this day, for unto THEE, O,
- 20:26Speaker 1: Lord Jesus, do I lift up my soul Psalm eighty six,
- 20:31Speaker 1: verse four. I long now to receive THEE devoutly and reverently.
- 20:39Speaker 1: I desire to bring THEE into my house, so that
- 20:42Speaker 1: Zachaeus and I may be counted worthy to be blessed
- 20:46Speaker 1: by THEE and numbered among the children of Abraham. My
- 20:51Speaker 1: soul hath an earnest desire for thy body. My heart
- 20:55Speaker 1: longeth to be united with THEE. Give me thyself, and
- 21:02Speaker 1: it sufficeth, for besides THEE no consolation availeth. Without THEE,
- 21:10Speaker 1: I cannot be, And without Thy visitation I have no
- 21:14Speaker 1: power to live. And therefore I must needs draw nigh
- 21:19Speaker 1: unto THEE often and receive THEE for the healing of
- 21:23Speaker 1: my soul. Lest haply I faint by the way if
- 21:27Speaker 1: I be deprived of heavenly food. For so thou most
- 21:32Speaker 1: Merciful Jesus, preaching to the people and healing many sick,
- 21:37Speaker 1: didst one say, I will not send them away fasting
- 21:41Speaker 1: to their own homes, lest they faint by the way
- 21:45Speaker 1: Matthew fifteen, verse thirty two. Deal therefore now to me
- 21:50Speaker 1: in like manner, For thou left thyself for the consolation
- 21:54Speaker 1: of the faithful in the sacrament, for thou art the
- 21:59Speaker 1: sweet refreshment of the soul, And he who shall eat
- 22:03Speaker 1: thee worthily shall be partaker and inheritor of the eternal
- 22:07Speaker 1: glory necessary. Indeed, it is for me, who so often
- 22:13Speaker 1: slide backwards and sin so quickly, wax cold and faint,
- 22:19Speaker 1: to renew, cleanse, and kindle myself by frequent prayers and penitences,
- 22:26Speaker 1: and receiving of thy sacred body and blood. Lest haply
- 22:31Speaker 1: by too long abstinence, I fall short of my holy resolutions.
- 22:38Speaker 1: For the imaginations of man's heart are evil from his
- 22:42Speaker 1: youth Genesis eight, verse twenty one. And except divine medicine
- 22:50Speaker 1: succor him, man slideth away continually unto the worse. The
- 22:56Speaker 1: Holy communion therefore draweth us back from evil and strengtheneth
- 23:01Speaker 1: us for good. For if I now be so negligent
- 23:05Speaker 1: and lukewarm when I communicate, how should it be with
- 23:09Speaker 1: me if I receive not this medicine and sought not
- 23:14Speaker 1: so great a help? For this is the one principal
- 23:19Speaker 1: consolation of a faithful soul, so long as it is
- 23:23Speaker 1: absent from THEE in mortal body, that, being continually mindful
- 23:28Speaker 1: of its God, it receiveth its beloved with devout spirit,
- 23:34Speaker 1: O wonderful condescension of thy pity surrounding us. That Thou, O, Lord, God,
- 23:41Speaker 1: Creator and quickener of all spirits, danest to come unto
- 23:46Speaker 1: a soul so poor and weak, and to appease its
- 23:50Speaker 1: hunger with thy whole deity and humanity, O, happy mind
- 23:55Speaker 1: and blessed soul, to which is granted devoutly to receive
- 23:59Speaker 1: THEE its Lord God, and in so receiving THEE, to
- 24:04Speaker 1: be filled with all spiritual joy. Oh, how great a
- 24:09Speaker 1: lord doth it entertain? How beloved a guest doth it
- 24:13Speaker 1: bring in? How delightful a companion? Doth it receive, How
- 24:18Speaker 1: faithful a friend? Doth it welcome? How beautiful and exalted
- 24:24Speaker 1: a spouse? Above every other? Beloved? Doth it embrace one
- 24:29Speaker 1: to be loved above all things that can be desired, O,
- 24:34Speaker 1: my most sweet beloved, Let heaven and Earth and all
- 24:38Speaker 1: the glory of them be silent in thy presence, seeing
- 24:43Speaker 1: whatsoever praise and beauty they have. It is of thy
- 24:47Speaker 1: gracious bounty, and they shall never reach unto the loveliness
- 24:52Speaker 1: of thy name, whose wisdom is infinite. Psalm one hundred
- 24:57Speaker 1: and forty seven, Verse five, Chapter four. That many good
- 25:04Speaker 1: gifts are bestowed upon those who communicate devoutly the voice
- 25:10Speaker 1: of the disciple, O, Lord, my God, prevent thou, thy servant,
- 25:17Speaker 1: with the blessings of thy sweetness, that I may be
- 25:21Speaker 1: enabled to draw near worthily and devoutly to thy glorious sacrament.
- 25:28Speaker 1: Awaken my heart towards thee, and deliver me from heavy slumber.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Visit me with thy salvation, that I may in spirit
- 25:38Speaker 1: taste thy sweetness, which plentifully lieth hid in this sacrament
- 25:44Speaker 1: as in a fountain. Lighten also mine eyes to behold
- 25:50Speaker 1: this so great mystery, and strengthen me that I may
- 25:54Speaker 1: believe it with undoubting faith. For it is Thy word,
- 25:59Speaker 1: not human power. It is Thy holy institution, not the
- 26:04Speaker 1: invention of man. For no man is found fit in
- 26:08Speaker 1: himself to receive and to understand these things which transcend
- 26:14Speaker 1: even the wisdom of the angels. What portion, then, shall I,
- 26:20Speaker 1: unworthy sinner, who am but dust and ashes, be able
- 26:24Speaker 1: to search into and comprehend of so deep a sacrament,
- 26:31Speaker 1: O Lord, in the simplicity of my heart, in good
- 26:35Speaker 1: and firm faith, and according to Thy will I draw
- 26:40Speaker 1: nigh unto THEE with hope and reverence, and truly believe
- 26:45Speaker 1: that Thou art here present in the sacrament, God and Man.
- 26:51Speaker 1: Thou willest therefore that I receive THEE and unite myself
- 26:55Speaker 1: to THEE in charity. Wherefore I beseech Thy mercy and
- 27:00Speaker 1: implore THEE to give me thy special grace to this end,
- 27:05Speaker 1: that I may be wholly dissolved and overflow with love
- 27:09Speaker 1: towards THEE, and no more suffer any other consolation to
- 27:14Speaker 1: enter into me. For this most high and glorious sacrament
- 27:20Speaker 1: is the health of the soul and the body, the
- 27:23Speaker 1: medicine of all spiritual sickness. Whereby I am healed of
- 27:28Speaker 1: my sins, My passions are bridled, temptations are conquered or weakened,
- 27:35Speaker 1: more grace is poured into me, virtue begun is increased,
- 27:41Speaker 1: faith is made firm, hope is strengthened, and charity is
- 27:47Speaker 1: enkindled and enlarged. For in this sacrament Thou hast bestowed
- 27:54Speaker 1: many good things and still bestowest them continually on Thine elect,
- 27:59Speaker 1: who commune municate devoutly, O, my God, lifter up of
- 28:04Speaker 1: my soul, repairer of human infirmity, and giver of all
- 28:09Speaker 1: inward consolation. For thou poorest into them much consolation, against
- 28:16Speaker 1: all sorts of tribulation, and out of the deep of
- 28:20Speaker 1: their own misery, Thou liftest them up to the hope
- 28:24Speaker 1: of Thy protection, and with ever new grace, dost inwardly
- 28:29Speaker 1: refresh and enlighten them, so that they, who felt themselves
- 28:34Speaker 1: to be anxious and without affection before communion, afterwards, being
- 28:39Speaker 1: refreshed with heavenly food and drink, find themselves changed for
- 28:45Speaker 1: the better. And even in such wise, thou dealist severally
- 28:50Speaker 1: with thine elect, that they may truly acknowledge and clearly
- 28:54Speaker 1: make proof that they have nothing whatsoever of their own,
- 28:59Speaker 1: and what goodness and grace come to them from THEE.
- 29:03Speaker 1: Because being in themselves cold, hard of heart, in devout
- 29:10Speaker 1: through THEE, they become fervent, zealous, and devout. For who
- 29:15Speaker 1: is there, coming humbly to the fountain of sweetness carrieth
- 29:20Speaker 1: not away, thence at the least some little of that
- 29:23Speaker 1: sweetness or who standing by a large fire, feeleth not
- 29:29Speaker 1: from thence a little of its heat, And thou art
- 29:32Speaker 1: ever a full and overflowing fountain, a fire continually burning
- 29:38Speaker 1: and never going out. Wherefore, if it is not suffered
- 29:45Speaker 1: to me to draw from the fullness of the fountain,
- 29:49Speaker 1: nor to drink unto satisfying, yet will I set my
- 29:53Speaker 1: lips to the mouth of the heavenly conduit, that at
- 29:57Speaker 1: least I may receive a small drop to quench my thirst,
- 30:01Speaker 1: that I dry not up within my heart. And if
- 30:05Speaker 1: I am not yet able to be altogether heavenly and
- 30:09Speaker 1: so enkindled as the Cherubim and Seraphim, yet will I
- 30:14Speaker 1: endeavor to give myself unto devotion and to prepare my heart,
- 30:19Speaker 1: that I may gain if it be but a little
- 30:22Speaker 1: flame of the divine fire, through the humble receiving of
- 30:26Speaker 1: the life giving sacrament. But whatsoever is wanting unto me? O,
- 30:32Speaker 1: Merciful Jesus, most Holy Savior, do thou of thy kindness
- 30:38Speaker 1: and grace supply, who hast vouchsafed to call all unto
- 30:43Speaker 1: thee saying, come unto me, all ye that are weary
- 30:48Speaker 1: and heavy laden, and I will refresh you. I indeed
- 30:54Speaker 1: labor in the sweat of my face. I am tormented
- 30:58Speaker 1: with sorrow of heart, I am burdened with sins, I
- 31:03Speaker 1: am disquieted with temptations. I am entangled and oppressed with
- 31:08Speaker 1: many passions. And there is none to help me. There
- 31:12Speaker 1: is none to deliver and ease me, but Thou, O,
- 31:15Speaker 1: Lord God, my Savior, to whom I commit myself and
- 31:20Speaker 1: all things that are mine, that Thou mayst preserve me
- 31:24Speaker 1: and lead me unto life eternal. Receive me unto the
- 31:30Speaker 1: praise and glory of thy name, who hast prepared thy
- 31:34Speaker 1: body and blood to be my meat and drink. Grant, O,
- 31:39Speaker 1: Lord God, my Savior, that with coming often to Thy mysteries,
- 31:44Speaker 1: the zeal of my devotion may increase. Chapter five of
- 31:53Speaker 1: the dignity of this sacrament and of the office of
- 31:57Speaker 1: the Priest Voice of the Beloved. If thou hadst angelic
- 32:05Speaker 1: purity and the holiness of Holy John the Baptist, thou
- 32:10Speaker 1: wouldst not be worthy to receive or to minister this sacrament.
- 32:16Speaker 1: For this is not deserved by merit of man, that
- 32:19Speaker 1: a man should consecrate and minister the Sacrament of Christ
- 32:24Speaker 1: and take for food the bread of angels. Vast is
- 32:29Speaker 1: the mystery, and great is the dignity of the priests,
- 32:33Speaker 1: to whom is given what is not granted to angels.
- 32:38Speaker 1: For priests only rightly ordained in the Church have the
- 32:42Speaker 1: power of consecrating and celebrating the body of Christ. A priest, indeed,
- 32:48Speaker 1: is the minister of God, using the word of God
- 32:51Speaker 1: by God's command and institution. Nevertheless, God is there the
- 32:57Speaker 1: principal author, and invisible words occur that to whom all
- 33:02Speaker 1: that He willeth is subject, and all He commandeth is obedient.
- 33:09Speaker 1: Therefore thou must believe God Almighty in this most excellent sacrament,
- 33:15Speaker 1: more than thine own sense or any visible sign at all.
- 33:20Speaker 1: And therefore with fear and reverence is this work to
- 33:23Speaker 1: be approached. Take heed therefore, and see what it is
- 33:28Speaker 1: of which the ministry is committed to thee by the
- 33:31Speaker 1: laying on of the Bishop's hand. Behold, thou art made
- 33:35Speaker 1: a priest and art consecrated to celebrate. See now that
- 33:41Speaker 1: thou do it before God faithfully and devoutly at due time,
- 33:45Speaker 1: and show thyself without blame. Thou hast not lightened thy burden,
- 33:52Speaker 1: but art now bound with a straitor bond of discipline
- 33:56Speaker 1: and art, pledged to a higher degree of holiness. A
- 34:00Speaker 1: priest ought to be adorned with all virtues and to
- 34:04Speaker 1: afford to others an example of good life. His conversation
- 34:09Speaker 1: must not be with the popular and common ways of men,
- 34:12Speaker 1: but with angels in heaven or with perfect men on earth.
- 34:18Speaker 1: A priest clad in holy garments taketh Christ's place, that
- 34:23Speaker 1: he may pray unto God with all supplication and humility,
- 34:28Speaker 1: for himself and for the whole people. He must always
- 34:34Speaker 1: remember the passion of Christ. He must diligently look upon
- 34:39Speaker 1: Christ's footsteps and fervently endeavor himself to follow them. He
- 34:44Speaker 1: must bear meekly for God, whatsoever ills are brought upon
- 34:49Speaker 1: him by others. He must mourn for his own sins
- 34:53Speaker 1: and for the sins committed by others, and may not
- 34:57Speaker 1: grow careless of prayer and holy oblame until he prevailed
- 35:02Speaker 1: to obtain grace and mercy. When the priest celebrateth, he
- 35:08Speaker 1: honoreth God, giveth joy to the angels, buildeth up the church,
- 35:15Speaker 1: helpeth the living, hath communion with the departed, and maketh
- 35:20Speaker 1: himself a partaker of all good things. Chapter six, an
- 35:29Speaker 1: inquiry concerning preparation for communion the Voice of the Disciple.
- 35:38Speaker 1: When I consider Thy dignity, O, Lord, and mine own vileness,
- 35:43Speaker 1: I tremble very exceedingly and am confounded within myself. For
- 35:50Speaker 1: if I approach not, I fly from life, And if
- 35:54Speaker 1: I intrude myself unworthily, I run into Thy displeasure. What
- 36:00Speaker 1: then shall I do o My God, Thou helper and
- 36:04Speaker 1: counselor in necessities, teach thou me the right way, propound
- 36:11Speaker 1: unto me some short exercise befitting holy communion. For it
- 36:16Speaker 1: is profitable to know how I ought to prepare my
- 36:19Speaker 1: heart devoutly and reverently for THEE, to the intent that
- 36:25Speaker 1: I may receive Thy sacrament to my soul's health. Chapter
- 36:32Speaker 1: seven of the Examination of Conscience and Purpose of Amendment.
- 36:39Speaker 1: The Voice of the Beloved. Above all things, the priest
- 36:45Speaker 1: of God must draw nigh with all humility of heart
- 36:49Speaker 1: and supplicating reverence, with full faith and pious desire for
- 36:54Speaker 1: the honor of God, to celebrate, minister and receive this sacrament.
- 37:03Speaker 1: Diligently examine thy conscience and with all thy might, with
- 37:07Speaker 1: true contrition and humble confession, cleanse and purify it so
- 37:13Speaker 1: that thou mayst feel no burden, nor know anything which
- 37:17Speaker 1: bringeth thee remorse and impedeth thy free approach. Have displeasure
- 37:24Speaker 1: against all thy sins in general, and specially sorrow and
- 37:29Speaker 1: mourn because of thy daily transgressions. And if thou have time,
- 37:34Speaker 1: confess unto God in the secret of thine heart, all
- 37:38Speaker 1: miseries of thine own passion, lament grievously, and be sorry,
- 37:46Speaker 1: because thou art still so carnal and worldly, so unmortified
- 37:51Speaker 1: from thy passions, so full of the motion of concupiscence,
- 37:57Speaker 1: so unguarded in thine outward senses, so often entangled in
- 38:03Speaker 1: many vain fancies, so much inclined to outward things, so
- 38:09Speaker 1: negligent of internal so ready to laughter and dissoluteness, so
- 38:16Speaker 1: unready to weeping and contrition, so prone to ease and
- 38:21Speaker 1: indulgence of the flesh, so dull to zeal and furvor,
- 38:27Speaker 1: so curious to hear novelties and behold beauties, so loathe
- 38:33Speaker 1: to embrace things humble and despised, so desirous to have
- 38:39Speaker 1: many things, so grudging in giving, so close in keeping,
- 38:46Speaker 1: so inconsiderate in speaking, so reluctant to keep silence, so
- 38:53Speaker 1: disorderly in manners, so inconsiderate in actions, so eager after food,
- 39:01Speaker 1: so deaf towards the word of God, so eager after rest,
- 39:07Speaker 1: so slow to labor, so watchful after tales, so sleepy
- 39:13Speaker 1: towards holy watchings, so eager for the end of them,
- 39:19Speaker 1: so wandering in attention to them, so negligent in observing
- 39:24Speaker 1: the hours of prayer, so lukewarm in celebrating, so unfruitful
- 39:30Speaker 1: in communicating, so quickly distracted, so seldom quite collected with thyself,
- 39:39Speaker 1: so quickly move to anger, so ready for displeasure at others,
- 39:45Speaker 1: so prone to judging, so severe at reproving, so joyful
- 39:51Speaker 1: in prosperity, so weak in adversity, so often making many
- 39:57Speaker 1: good resolutions, and bring them to so little effect. When
- 40:04Speaker 1: thou hast confessed and bewailed these and thy other shortcomings
- 40:10Speaker 1: with sorrow and sore displeasure at thine own infirmity, make
- 40:15Speaker 1: then a firm resolution of continual amendment of life and
- 40:20Speaker 1: of progress in all that is good. Then, moreover, with
- 40:25Speaker 1: full resignation and entire will offer thyself to the honor
- 40:31Speaker 1: of my name on the altar of thine heart as
- 40:34Speaker 1: a perpetual whole burnt offering, even by faithfully presenting thy
- 40:40Speaker 1: body and soul unto me, to the end, that thou
- 40:43Speaker 1: mayst so be accounted worthy to draw near to offer
- 40:47Speaker 1: this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to God, and to
- 40:52Speaker 1: receive the sacrament of my body and blood to thy
- 40:56Speaker 1: soul's health. For there is no obors glati worthier, no
- 41:02Speaker 1: satisfaction greater for the destroying of sin, than that a
- 41:06Speaker 1: man offer himself to God purely and entirely, with the
- 41:11Speaker 1: oblation of the body and blood of Christ in the
- 41:14Speaker 1: Holy communion. If a man shall have done what in
- 41:19Speaker 1: him lieth, and shall repent him truly, then how often
- 41:24Speaker 1: soever he shall draw nigh unto Me for pardon and grace.
- 41:29Speaker 1: As I live, saith the Lord, I have no pleasure
- 41:33Speaker 1: in the death of a sinner, but rather that he
- 41:35Speaker 1: should be converted and live all his transgressions that he
- 41:41Speaker 1: hath committed. They shall not be mentioned unto him. Ezekiel eighteen,
- 41:48Speaker 1: Verses twenty two and twenty three, Chapter eight of the
- 41:55Speaker 1: Oblation of Christ upon the Cross and of resignation of self,
- 42:02Speaker 1: the voice of the Beloved, as I of my own
- 42:08Speaker 1: will offer'd myself unto God the Father on the cross
- 42:11Speaker 1: for thy sins, with outstretched hands and naked body, so
- 42:17Speaker 1: that nothing remained in me that did not become altogether
- 42:20Speaker 1: a sacrifice for the divine propitiation. So also aughtist thou
- 42:27Speaker 1: every day to offer thyself willingly unto me for a
- 42:31Speaker 1: pure and holy oblation, with all thy strength and affections,
- 42:37Speaker 1: even to the utmost powers of thine heart. What more
- 42:42Speaker 1: do I require of THEE than thou study to resign
- 42:45Speaker 1: thyself altogether unto me. Whatsoever thou givest besides thyself, I
- 42:53Speaker 1: nothing care for, for I ask not thy gift but THEE,
- 43:00Speaker 1: as it would not be sufficient for THEE if thou
- 43:02Speaker 1: hadst all things except me. Even so, whatsoever thou shalt
- 43:08Speaker 1: give me. If thou give me not thyself, it cannot
- 43:12Speaker 1: please me. Offer thyself to me and give thyself all
- 43:18Speaker 1: together for God. So shall thy offering be accepted. Behold,
- 43:24Speaker 1: I offered myself altogether to the Father for THEE. I
- 43:29Speaker 1: gave also my whole body and blood for food, that
- 43:32Speaker 1: thou mightest remain altogether mine and I thine. But if
- 43:39Speaker 1: thou stand in thyself and offer not thyself freely to
- 43:43Speaker 1: my will, thy offering is not perfect, neither shall the
- 43:48Speaker 1: union betwixt us be complete. Therefore, aught the free will
- 43:54Speaker 1: offering of thyself into the hands of God, to go
- 43:57Speaker 1: before all thy works, if thou wilt attain liberty and grace.
- 44:04Speaker 1: For this is the cause that so few are inwardly
- 44:08Speaker 1: enlightened and made free, that they know not how to
- 44:12Speaker 1: deny themselves entirely. My word standeth sure. Except a man
- 44:19Speaker 1: forsake all, he cannot be my disciple. Luke fourteen, verse
- 44:24Speaker 1: thirty three. Thou, therefore, if thou wilt be my disciple,
- 44:29Speaker 1: offer thyself to me with all thy affections. Chapter nine.
- 44:37Speaker 1: That we ought to offer ourselves and all that is
- 44:40Speaker 1: ours to God and to pray for all the voice
- 44:46Speaker 1: of the disciple. Lord, all that is in the heaven
- 44:51Speaker 1: and in the earth is thine one Chronicles twenty nine,
- 44:57Speaker 1: verse eleven. I desire I are to offer myself up
- 45:01Speaker 1: unto THEE as a free will offering, and to continue
- 45:06Speaker 1: thine forever, Lord, in the uprightness of myne heart, I
- 45:12Speaker 1: willingly offer one Chronicles twenty nine, verse seventeen myself to
- 45:19Speaker 1: THEE to day, to be Thy servant forever in humble
- 45:23Speaker 1: submission and for a sacrifice of perpetual praise. Receive me
- 45:30Speaker 1: with this holy communion of thy precious body, which I
- 45:34Speaker 1: celebrate before THEE this day, in the presence of the
- 45:38Speaker 1: angels invisibly surrounding, that it may be for the salvation
- 45:43Speaker 1: of me and of all thy people. Lord, I lay
- 45:49Speaker 1: before THEE at this celebration all my sins and offenses
- 45:54Speaker 1: which I have committed before THEE and Thy holy angels,
- 45:58Speaker 1: from the day whereon I was first able to sin,
- 46:02Speaker 1: even unto this hour, that Thou mayest consume and burn
- 46:06Speaker 1: them every one with the fire of thy charity, and
- 46:10Speaker 1: mayest do away all the stains of my sins, and
- 46:15Speaker 1: cleanse my conscience from all offense, and restore me to
- 46:19Speaker 1: Thy favor, which by sinning I have lost, fully forgiving
- 46:24Speaker 1: me all and mercifully admitting me to the kiss of peace.
- 46:31Speaker 1: What can I do concerning my sins, save humbly to
- 46:36Speaker 1: confess and lament them, and unceasingly to beseech Thy propitiation.
- 46:43Speaker 1: I beseech THEE be propitious unto me and hear me
- 46:46Speaker 1: when I stand before THEE, O, my God, all my
- 46:51Speaker 1: sins displease me. Grievously. I will never more commit them,
- 46:56Speaker 1: but I grieve for them, and will grieve so long
- 46:59Speaker 1: as I live, steadfastly, purposing to repent me truly and
- 47:05Speaker 1: to make restitution as far as I can. Forgive me. O, God,
- 47:10Speaker 1: forgive me my sins for thy holy Name's sake, save
- 47:15Speaker 1: my soul, which thou hast redeemed with thy precious blood. Behold,
- 47:21Speaker 1: I commit myself to thy mercy. I resign myself to
- 47:25Speaker 1: Thy hands. Deal with me according to thy loving kindness,
- 47:31Speaker 1: not according to my wickedness and iniquity. I offer also
- 47:39Speaker 1: unto THEE all my goodness, though it is exceedingly little
- 47:43Speaker 1: and imperfect, that thou mayest mend and sanctify it, that
- 47:48Speaker 1: thou mayest make it well pleasing and acceptable in thy sight,
- 47:53Speaker 1: and ever draw it on towards perfection, and furthermore, bring
- 47:58Speaker 1: me safely, loathful and useless poor creature that I am
- 48:03Speaker 1: to a happy and blessed end. Moreover, I offer unto
- 48:09Speaker 1: THEE all pious desires, of the devout necessities of parents, friends, brothers, sisters,
- 48:17Speaker 1: and all who are dear to me, and of those
- 48:20Speaker 1: who have done good to me or to others. For
- 48:23Speaker 1: thy love, and those who have desired and besought my
- 48:27Speaker 1: prayers for themselves and all belonging to them, that all
- 48:33Speaker 1: may feel themselves assisted by Thy grace, enriched by consolation,
- 48:39Speaker 1: protected from dangers, freed from pains, and that, being delivered
- 48:45Speaker 1: from all evils, they may joyfully give THEE exceeding thanks.
- 48:52Speaker 1: I offer also to THEE prayers and sacramental intercessions for
- 48:58Speaker 1: those especially who have injured me, in aught, made me sad,
- 49:03Speaker 1: or spoken evil concerning me, or have caused me any
- 49:07Speaker 1: loss or displeasure. For all those also whom I have
- 49:12Speaker 1: at any time made sad, disturbed, burdened, and scandalized by
- 49:18Speaker 1: words or deeds, knowingly or ignorantly, that to all of
- 49:23Speaker 1: us alike, Thou mayst equally pardon our sins and mutual offenses.
- 49:30Speaker 1: Take away, O Lord, from our hearts, all suspicion, indignation,
- 49:36Speaker 1: anger and contention, and whatsoever is able to injure charity
- 49:42Speaker 1: and diminish brotherly love. Have mercy, Have mercy, Lord on
- 49:47Speaker 1: those who entreat thy mercy. Give grace to the needy,
- 49:53Speaker 1: and make us such that we may be worthy to
- 49:55Speaker 1: enjoy Thy grace and go forward to the life eternal.
- 50:01Speaker 1: Amen Chapter ten, that Holy Communion is not likely to
- 50:09Speaker 1: be omitted the voice of the Beloved. Thou must frequently
- 50:17Speaker 1: betake thee to the fountain of grace and divine mercy,
- 50:21Speaker 1: to the fountain of goodness and all purity, to the
- 50:26Speaker 1: end that thou mayest obtain the healing of thy passions
- 50:29Speaker 1: and vices, and mayst be made stronger and more watchful
- 50:34Speaker 1: against all temptations and wiles of the devil. The enemy,
- 50:40Speaker 1: knowing what profit and exceeding strong remedy lieth in the
- 50:44Speaker 1: Holy Communion, striveth by all means and occasions to draw
- 50:49Speaker 1: back and hinder the faithful and devout so far as
- 50:53Speaker 1: he can. For when some set about to prepare themselves
- 50:59Speaker 1: for Holy Communion, they suffer from the more evil suggestions
- 51:04Speaker 1: of Satan. The very evil spirit himself, as is written
- 51:10Speaker 1: in Job, cometh among the sons of God, that he
- 51:14Speaker 1: may trouble them by his accustomed evil dealing, or make
- 51:18Speaker 1: them over timid and perplexed, to the intent that he
- 51:22Speaker 1: may diminish their affections or take away their faith by
- 51:26Speaker 1: his attacks. If haply, he may prevail upon them to
- 51:31Speaker 1: give up Holy Communion altogether, or to come thereto with
- 51:35Speaker 1: lukewarm hearts. But his wiles and delusions must not be heeded,
- 51:42Speaker 1: howsoever wicked and terrible they be. But all his delusion
- 51:47Speaker 1: must be cast back upon his own head. The wretch
- 51:51Speaker 1: must be despised and laughed to scorn. Neither must Holy
- 51:56Speaker 1: Communion be omitted because of his insults and the inward
- 52:00Speaker 1: troubles which he stirreth up. Often also, too much carefulness,
- 52:07Speaker 1: or some anxiety or other touching confession hindereth from obtaining devotion.
- 52:15Speaker 1: Do thou, according to the counsel of wise men, and
- 52:18Speaker 1: lay aside anxiety and scruple, because it hindereth the grace
- 52:23Speaker 1: of God, and destroyeth devotion of mind because of some
- 52:29Speaker 1: little vexation or trouble. Do not thou neglect Holy Communion,
- 52:34Speaker 1: but rather hasten to confess it and forgive freely all
- 52:39Speaker 1: offenses committed against Thee. And if thou hast offended any man,
- 52:45Speaker 1: humbly beg for pardon, and God shall freely forgive THEE.
- 52:52Speaker 1: What profiteth it to put off for a long time
- 52:56Speaker 1: the confession of thy sins, or to defer communion. Cleanse
- 53:02Speaker 1: thyself forthwith spit out the poison with all speed, hasten
- 53:08Speaker 1: to take the remedy, and thou shalt feel thyself better
- 53:13Speaker 1: than if thou didst long defer it. If today thou
- 53:18Speaker 1: defer it on one account, Tomorrow perchance some greater obstacle
- 53:23Speaker 1: will come, And so thou mayest be long time hindered
- 53:27Speaker 1: from communion and become more unfit, as soon as thou
- 53:32Speaker 1: canst shake thyself from thy present heaviness and sloth, for
- 53:37Speaker 1: it profiteth nothing to be long anxious to go long
- 53:42Speaker 1: on thy way with heaviness of heart, and because of
- 53:46Speaker 1: daily little obstacles, to sever thyself from divine things. Nay,
- 53:52Speaker 1: it is exceeding hurtful to defer thy communion long, for
- 53:57Speaker 1: this commonly bringeth on great torpor. Alas there are some
- 54:03Speaker 1: lukewarm and undisciplined who willingly find excuses for delaying repentance,
- 54:10Speaker 1: and desire to defer Holy Communion, lest they should be
- 54:14Speaker 1: bound to keep strict to watch upon themselves. Alas, how
- 54:21Speaker 1: little charity, what flagging devotion have they who so lightly
- 54:26Speaker 1: put off Holy communion? How happy is he? How acceptable
- 54:32Speaker 1: to God who so liveth and in such purity of
- 54:36Speaker 1: conscience keepeth himself that any day he could be ready
- 54:41Speaker 1: and well inclined to communicate if it were in his power,
- 54:46Speaker 1: and might be done without the notice of others. If
- 54:50Speaker 1: a man sometimes abstaineth for the sake of humility or
- 54:54Speaker 1: some sound cause, he is to be commended for his reverence.
- 55:00Speaker 1: But if drowsiness hath taken hold of him, he ought
- 55:04Speaker 1: to rouse himself and to do what in him lieth,
- 55:08Speaker 1: and the Lord will help his desire for the good
- 55:11Speaker 1: will which he hath, which God specially approveth. But when
- 55:17Speaker 1: he is hindered by sufficient cause, yet will he ever
- 55:22Speaker 1: have a good will and pious intention to communicate, and
- 55:26Speaker 1: so he shall not be lacking in the fruit of
- 55:29Speaker 1: the sacrament. For any devout man is able every day
- 55:34Speaker 1: and every hour to draw near to spiritual communion with Christ,
- 55:39Speaker 1: to his soul's health, and without hindrance. Nevertheless, on certain
- 55:45Speaker 1: days and at the appointed time, he ought to receive
- 55:49Speaker 1: the body and blood of his Redeemer with affectionate reverence,
- 55:54Speaker 1: and rather to seek after the praise and honor of
- 55:57Speaker 1: God than his own comfort. For so doth he communicate mystically,
- 56:04Speaker 1: and is invisibly refreshed, as he devoutly calleth to mind
- 56:09Speaker 1: the mystery of Christ's incarnation and his passion, and is
- 56:14Speaker 1: inflamed with the love of Him. He who only prepareth
- 56:19Speaker 1: himself when a festival is at hand or custom compelleth,
- 56:24Speaker 1: will too often be unprepared. Blessed is he who offereth
- 56:30Speaker 1: himself to God for a whole burnt offering, so often
- 56:34Speaker 1: as he celebrateth or communicateth. Be not too slow nor
- 56:40Speaker 1: too hurried in thy communicating, but preserve the good received
- 56:46Speaker 1: custom of those with whom thou livest. Thou oughtest not
- 56:51Speaker 1: to produce weariness and annoyance in others, but to observe
- 56:55Speaker 1: the received custom according to the Institution of the US Elders,
- 57:01Speaker 1: and to minister to the profit of others, rather than
- 57:05Speaker 1: to thine own devotion or feeling. End of Chapter ten.
