- 0:00Speaker 1: This is how we do it. This is how we
- 0:03Speaker 1: do it. This is how we do it, Shanna. This
- 0:10Speaker 1: is how we do it, Shanna. Good morning, good afternoon.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Hi everybody, Hi hi, hi, hi Hi everybody. I love you,
- 0:21Speaker 1: I love you, I love you. Holy cow. Well Joel,
- 0:25Speaker 1: First of all, Joel, you look beautiful. I don't know
- 0:27Speaker 1: what's happening you. Oh, I see and Daniel and Daniel
- 0:33Speaker 1: you've changed your look and your background. I am I mean,
- 0:39Speaker 1: I guess I can tell the fans. I am currently
- 0:41Speaker 1: in New York City. Oh, we're all jumping around the world. Indeed,
- 0:46Speaker 1: I'm a meeting an you know, you know what's two
- 0:49Speaker 1: black people are jumping around the world. Black jumping around
- 0:54Speaker 1: the world at all. I had to meet my girlfriend's
- 0:57Speaker 1: family for the first time. I'm sorry, that's amazing. Go
- 1:02Speaker 1: Do they like you? What's not to like? You're a
- 1:04Speaker 1: charming motherfucker? Well you honor me. I really appreciate that.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Haven't met yet. We got COVID test this morning, So
- 1:09Speaker 1: when we come back with negative results and we quarantine
- 1:11Speaker 1: a little bit, then we'll be okay meeting people. But
- 1:13Speaker 1: for the time being, were shacked up, just kind of chilling.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Did you do the rapid test. Uh it is? I
- 1:19Speaker 1: think so. Yeah. We went to the went to the
- 1:21Speaker 1: hospital and got the nose swab. It's my first time
- 1:23Speaker 1: getting a no swab. This is the thing they go,
- 1:26Speaker 1: They go deep like Donald, this isn't wow. This is
- 1:30Speaker 1: the thing everybody's doing nowadays, Like everybody's just getting that
- 1:33Speaker 1: rapid test to make sure that they can hang out
- 1:35Speaker 1: with each other. We should have told me you could
- 1:37Speaker 1: have hung out in my apartment. I'm so sorry that's
- 1:39Speaker 1: sitting there empty. I didn't want to bother you. I'm
- 1:42Speaker 1: so sorry. Next time for it, Daniel. That's very interesting
- 1:47Speaker 1: because when I ask for that ship, he tells me
- 1:49Speaker 1: no every time. Yeah, you know why. You know why
- 1:51Speaker 1: because Daniel will fucking be respectful. I can picture you
- 1:56Speaker 1: having like a party and smoking fucking jazz cabbage one.
- 2:03Speaker 1: I don't have any friends other than you and Daniel
- 2:06Speaker 1: and Joel and Daniel and Joel and I don't hang out. Okay, wait,
- 2:12Speaker 1: wait till the tour bus. Wait till the tour bus.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Oh my god. That's so dangerous. But I can I
- 2:18Speaker 1: can trust. I can picture trusting Daniel in my apartment,
- 2:22Speaker 1: and I know that nothing would happen with you. I
- 2:25Speaker 1: can picture like you'd forget some candle next to the
- 2:28Speaker 1: drapes and then backdraft. I find that one offensive because
- 2:38Speaker 1: what makes you think that I like candles? What the
- 2:43Speaker 1: fun is that about? I don't like candles candles. I
- 2:49Speaker 1: am one of those people who does not like candles,
- 2:51Speaker 1: I think. I mean, my wife loves candles, so they
- 2:54Speaker 1: burn in our house. But I'm one of those people
- 2:56Speaker 1: who's like, you're gonna light a candle? Is this like
- 2:59Speaker 1: a fire hazard thing? I just don't. I mean, that
- 3:03Speaker 1: smells waxy and scented. The only candles I do like
- 3:06Speaker 1: is at the hotel whatever that hotel is that's in
- 3:09Speaker 1: New York City, and the lobby smells like it smells
- 3:13Speaker 1: like this certain candle, and apparently this candle costs a
- 3:17Speaker 1: ship ton of money. I want to say it's the
- 3:19Speaker 1: Bowery I could. Is that the one with the club
- 3:22Speaker 1: in the lobby. It's not a club, it's like a
- 3:24Speaker 1: really sexy lounge. There's there's one that has literally a
- 3:28Speaker 1: club right next door, Like on some nights you come
- 3:31Speaker 1: downstairs and there's a club popping right next door. It's
- 3:36Speaker 1: like and and you can easily you can easily. What
- 3:40Speaker 1: is the other one. There's a bunch of them anyway.
- 3:41Speaker 1: My point, Josh Rayden stayed at the Bowery so much
- 3:44Speaker 1: they gave him an embroidered bathrobe with his name on it.
- 3:47Speaker 1: And when he would stay the bathroom would be lying
- 3:50Speaker 1: on the bed. But he had to leave the bathrobe
- 3:53Speaker 1: there when he left. Literally at the Bowery, when you stay,
- 3:56Speaker 1: when you spend enough money there and stay there long enough,
- 3:59Speaker 1: you get your own embroidered robe, and they lie in
- 4:02Speaker 1: on your bed when you're there, and when you're not there,
- 4:04Speaker 1: they stored away in the embroidered road rooms. Good dollar, good?
- 4:11Speaker 1: Did you see what? What? First of all, I need
- 4:13Speaker 1: to know. First of all, I have a special surprise
- 4:15Speaker 1: for you in this episode I planned. Okay, Donald, Joel
- 4:18Speaker 1: and Dan will know what the surprise is. You got
- 4:21Speaker 1: me to fucking oh shoot, you got to yeah, Zick,
- 4:25Speaker 1: you got me to simulator. Now, calm that not that good.
- 4:32Speaker 1: It's not a six thousand dollar golf simulator. No. I
- 4:37Speaker 1: really appreciate that though. By the way, speaking of speaking
- 4:40Speaker 1: of surprises, I don't even know who two Chains is.
- 4:42Speaker 1: I imagine he's a very famous rapper. Right, did you
- 4:46Speaker 1: just say, Tea Chains, do you do you like to change?
- 4:49Speaker 1: You guys? Are you too chains fans? Because the three
- 4:51Speaker 1: of you I think like rap right, two Chains is
- 4:54Speaker 1: like conic. I was gonna say, you know, I'm just
- 4:56Speaker 1: certainly most certainly jump man, jump man jump No, that's
- 4:59Speaker 1: the future right up to something right now. I've never
- 5:04Speaker 1: heard of two Chain song. I imagine he's very successful.
- 5:06Speaker 1: And I can tell you that he's friends with Kanye
- 5:08Speaker 1: West because I went on the inner webs today and
- 5:12Speaker 1: Kanye West gave two Chains an amphibious a t V.
- 5:18Speaker 1: That is the coolest looking thing I've ever seen. Kanye
- 5:22Speaker 1: West is a billionaire dude, no I know, but he
- 5:25Speaker 1: still gave his friend an amphibious a t V and
- 5:28Speaker 1: he put a plaque on it. You got, I mean,
- 5:30Speaker 1: if you're listening to this, just google it. It's the
- 5:32Speaker 1: coolest thing ever. And I'm hoping that one day Donald
- 5:34Speaker 1: will get rich enough to buy me one If I
- 5:37Speaker 1: get a billion dollars in my bank account when I
- 5:40Speaker 1: should how much union? How much? A billion? Yeah? I
- 5:44Speaker 1: think you need a billion? Oh man, it's so it's
- 5:47Speaker 1: called a sherma or something. Hold on, I saw because
- 5:50Speaker 1: Kanye probably paid for the thing and still still had
- 5:53Speaker 1: a billion after he paid Joel, can you look up
- 5:55Speaker 1: what it's called. Just look up Amphibious a t V
- 5:58Speaker 1: the two chains got from Kanye sharp a t v
- 6:03Speaker 1: S shirp a t v S. Yes, it's branded well
- 6:09Speaker 1: he he tricked it out and I'm sure there's a
- 6:11Speaker 1: dope sound system and he did. Did you see the picture,
- 6:15Speaker 1: you guys, if you're listening, you have to google image
- 6:17Speaker 1: this thing. Everybody needs one, everybody needs. Do you know
- 6:20Speaker 1: what I want? I want the sharp a TV that
- 6:23Speaker 1: turned into a sub I want the subversion. I want
- 6:26Speaker 1: the one that when because look, it's great to be
- 6:29Speaker 1: able to go over hills and it's great to be
- 6:31Speaker 1: able to do like you know, uh, go in the water.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Wouldn't be in chaste, but you know it's even better
- 6:37Speaker 1: than that to be like that's it sucking. I'm out
- 6:39Speaker 1: and dive and then dive to the depths of the ocean,
- 6:43Speaker 1: depths that you know some people like dude, I want
- 6:46Speaker 1: the freaking spy car on ground and water, land and
- 6:54Speaker 1: sea and yo, j did you see the picture? Joel
- 6:59Speaker 1: just sent us to it. It's fucking amazing. Fighting for freedom,
- 7:03Speaker 1: ob wherever there's trouble over land and sea and there
- 7:09Speaker 1: Joe is there. Oh my god, that it is tight.
- 7:13Speaker 1: If if an erection was an a TV that sh
- 7:17Speaker 1: it looks like a g That shi it looks like
- 7:19Speaker 1: a Cobra vehicle. It looks like a Cobra vehicle from
- 7:23Speaker 1: the g I Joe cartoon. I only wishb Yeah, he
- 7:29Speaker 1: put up. He engraved a proverb on a plaque and
- 7:32Speaker 1: put it on on the thing. This is wild, you guys.
- 7:36Speaker 1: My only wish for Donald Phazon is that he gets
- 7:39Speaker 1: rich enough to buy me that thing. I love it.
- 7:43Speaker 1: I hope that one day that is possible. I hope
- 7:45Speaker 1: tell me, um, hey, Daniel, tell me when, tell me
- 7:48Speaker 1: when the surprise is in? Present is present? The surprise
- 7:52Speaker 1: is ready and waiting. Okay, so Donald, I got you
- 7:57Speaker 1: a present today. No, it's a uh you know Donald.
- 8:02Speaker 1: For listeners out there, we were hoping to invite Sarah
- 8:07Speaker 1: chalk on today because she's prominent and very funny in
- 8:11Speaker 1: this episode. But she is just I think she's like
- 8:15Speaker 1: camping in the middle of nowhere, Canada with her family,
- 8:19Speaker 1: and uh so she couldn't come. So I reached out
- 8:23Speaker 1: to everybody's favorite guest. Let's bring him in, Donald, Donald,
- 8:30Speaker 1: close your eyes, close your eyes, Bill. Yeah yeah, Look
- 8:44Speaker 1: how happy is Bill? Look how much happiness he ring? Donald?
- 8:52Speaker 1: How could I be a surprise? I think about every episode.
- 8:55Speaker 1: This is very exciting. But dude, this is it's always
- 8:58Speaker 1: a good episode when Bills are count on it being
- 9:01Speaker 1: a good episode. When Bill is on the fans love it.
- 9:04Speaker 1: I love it. I'm gonna tell you one thing. I
- 9:07Speaker 1: was hoping you were a golf simulator. Bill. I'm not
- 9:10Speaker 1: gonna lie. Bill, I go, I got you a surprise.
- 9:15Speaker 1: He goes a gulf simulator. Although I understand that even
- 9:19Speaker 1: by the way, even just like one of those nets
- 9:21Speaker 1: you put in your backyard and hit into that would
- 9:23Speaker 1: have been that would have been as good as me that. No, no, no, no,
- 9:27Speaker 1: this is way better than no. It's by the way, Donald,
- 9:30Speaker 1: it's not one of those tiny nets that catches golf
- 9:32Speaker 1: balls with the Matt. It's so they're perfect, Matt. That'll
- 9:35Speaker 1: be That'll be the next surprise. Bill. I'm I have
- 9:37Speaker 1: to tell you that. Um, I love you so much.
- 9:40Speaker 1: But one thing that really annoys me is in my
- 9:42Speaker 1: in my social media when I'm scrolling and I see
- 9:45Speaker 1: and I'm just posted a podcast that Donald and I did,
- 9:48Speaker 1: and I'm I think it's funny, and I want to
- 9:50Speaker 1: know what everyone thinks, and you weren't on the particular one.
- 9:53Speaker 1: And the first comment is more Bill, please, that's all.
- 9:59Speaker 1: This is a out for me now it means it's working.
- 10:01Speaker 1: That's my I really, I really hate it. I hate
- 10:04Speaker 1: it because Donald and I finally launched something successful without you,
- 10:08Speaker 1: and you're slowly infiltrating how could this be considered without Bill?
- 10:13Speaker 1: It's a fucking mean. It's totally of course with him,
- 10:18Speaker 1: but he wasn't. I just think it's funny that everywhere
- 10:21Speaker 1: like merch ideas, everyone's like, how about Bill on a
- 10:24Speaker 1: hat saying five. I'm not doing a ton of retweeting lately,
- 10:30Speaker 1: but I will say anybody that tweets me and says Bill,
- 10:34Speaker 1: I'm enjoying your podcast with Zack and Donald, I immediately
- 10:38Speaker 1: retweet that it makes me so happy happy. I know
- 10:45Speaker 1: that you love it, and and uh and and but
- 10:47Speaker 1: the truth is that you're very funny and the people
- 10:49Speaker 1: love Bill Lawrence. And also we have to say congratulations,
- 10:52Speaker 1: because I don't know if the three of you who
- 10:54Speaker 1: are not Bill no, but his show Ted Lasso is
- 10:57Speaker 1: a giant hit. People fucking love it. There's aplause, wonders, applause,
- 11:01Speaker 1: then oh jeez, thank you Zachie. It's is cool. By
- 11:05Speaker 1: the way, it was, you know, it was one of
- 11:06Speaker 1: those things I wish I could have done in America
- 11:08Speaker 1: because then, you know, I love bringing the people back
- 11:11Speaker 1: onto shows that I've worked with before, so i'd see you. Also,
- 11:14Speaker 1: it's such a gift that you were in London and
- 11:16Speaker 1: got to direct one z but that was super no,
- 11:18Speaker 1: I know, And if you were shooting right now, I
- 11:20Speaker 1: could be directing another one because I'm here. Um. But
- 11:23Speaker 1: but you have you have, you have some of your
- 11:26Speaker 1: favorites on the show already. I didn't know you had
- 11:29Speaker 1: Brett on the show Man. Oh yeah, yeah, by the way,
- 11:31Speaker 1: I forgot. They got with Donald. But the advantage Brett
- 11:34Speaker 1: lives there, you know, he that guy, that guy is
- 11:36Speaker 1: you know what I mean. Donald did a pilot with
- 11:38Speaker 1: me and Brett. I'm trying. By the way, Donald, this
- 11:41Speaker 1: is this is where what our life has become. It's
- 11:44Speaker 1: like what zach used to with girls is zax in London.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Brett lives in London with a love with Brett Goldstein
- 11:51Speaker 1: is a writer and producer, and he started the pilot
- 11:54Speaker 1: that Donald that Donald and I did together, and he's
- 11:57Speaker 1: one of the producers and stars of Ted Wat. So
- 12:00Speaker 1: he plays Roy and I'm trying to make exact be
- 12:02Speaker 1: friends with him, like Zac, you got a friend, you
- 12:06Speaker 1: would love it. You will love him. I don't know
- 12:08Speaker 1: if you're talking out with him yet. You will love him.
- 12:10Speaker 1: He is our speed. We joked about Donald and I
- 12:13Speaker 1: joked about going on a mandate because we had Shay
- 12:16Speaker 1: on as you know Bill because you you uh, you
- 12:18Speaker 1: did interrupting Bill, And we joked about like wanting if
- 12:21Speaker 1: it weren't COVID, like wanting to to go out and
- 12:24Speaker 1: hang out with Shay. But it's we're talking about how
- 12:26Speaker 1: it's weird in your forties to be like what do
- 12:28Speaker 1: you how do you like start a new male friendship.
- 12:31Speaker 1: It's like, hey, would you like to go on a
- 12:32Speaker 1: on a mandate? And uh? And Bill is trying to
- 12:35Speaker 1: set me up on a mandate with Brett, while I'm
- 12:37Speaker 1: you should go, dude, you should hang out with him.
- 12:39Speaker 1: You guys would laugh a lot man And he doesn't
- 12:41Speaker 1: give a ship that You're Zach Brapp and we're on
- 12:43Speaker 1: Scrubs or anything like that. He's one I know. I
- 12:45Speaker 1: already worked with him, dude. I directed him on ted
- 12:47Speaker 1: Lasso and he was He was delightful and funny as ship.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Does he write episodes too, Yeah, he's because he's a Donald.
- 12:54Speaker 1: He's a writer. First, he got he's someone another one
- 12:56Speaker 1: of those people we have to all be friends with.
- 12:58Speaker 1: He created his own show on AMC that comes out
- 13:00Speaker 1: in two months. It just got picked up for a
- 13:02Speaker 1: second season. So he's got his own he's got his
- 13:04Speaker 1: own show. He's starting in another one. He's wrote a
- 13:07Speaker 1: big movie in the UK called Nan, and he's got
- 13:10Speaker 1: a very big podcast that he wants you both to
- 13:12Speaker 1: be on. He's his podcast, not to promo it on yours.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Is called Films to be Buried With and they sometimes
- 13:18Speaker 1: shoot it at the British Film Institute and he basically
- 13:21Speaker 1: just interviews you about what movies you'd like to be
- 13:24Speaker 1: known for as your favorite. Donald will be all about
- 13:27Speaker 1: Star Wars for you when you die, What are the
- 13:29Speaker 1: movies you want your kids to see, What movies influenced
- 13:31Speaker 1: you the most and all that stuff. He's awesome, that's cool,
- 13:35Speaker 1: that's awesome. I'm gonna be on it because he's already
- 13:38Speaker 1: hit me up and we're our mandate process has begun.
- 13:41Speaker 1: We are we are chatting, we are chatting. He is also,
- 13:45Speaker 1: by the way, Zach coupled up with a younger, charismatic,
- 13:49Speaker 1: stunningly beautiful and fun British woman like yourself. I mean,
- 13:52Speaker 1: it's as if you guys were yet by the way,
- 13:55Speaker 1: who her name is Beth. But because they use the
- 13:58Speaker 1: word fit over there if a girl is very attractive
- 14:00Speaker 1: or if a boy is very attractive, he started calling
- 14:03Speaker 1: her fit Beeth when they first started dating, and it
- 14:05Speaker 1: has somehow stuck as her nickname. So when you call
- 14:08Speaker 1: him up, you'd be like, hey, what are you up to.
- 14:10Speaker 1: He's like, oh, I'm just here having dinner with fit
- 14:12Speaker 1: Beeth and it's uh. I think it's one of the
- 14:16Speaker 1: all time solid British nicknames. Well, I'm excited to take
- 14:18Speaker 1: him on a double date with fit Florence. Um, hey,
- 14:22Speaker 1: we haven't. We haven't. We haven't started the show with
- 14:26Speaker 1: with singing yet. And I think since some it is
- 14:28Speaker 1: your catchphrase, you might want to do the honors. I
- 14:32Speaker 1: don't like to do it when people ask me to
- 14:34Speaker 1: do it. Nobody's asking you nobody's asking five, six, seven
- 14:41Speaker 1: about show we made about a bunch of times and nurses,
- 14:46Speaker 1: and so get around here, yeah, around here. I'm gonna
- 15:03Speaker 1: try something new with the breakdown. I get very excited
- 15:07Speaker 1: about the breakdowns. You're not. You're not gonna get excited
- 15:10Speaker 1: about this one bill because people who started freaking talking
- 15:13Speaker 1: trash on the internet about dude j D does the
- 15:17Speaker 1: summary of life and everything at the end of every episode,
- 15:20Speaker 1: Please just tell us what's going on because I have
- 15:23Speaker 1: no idea. And then part of me said, it's a
- 15:26Speaker 1: rewatch podcast. You've had over ten years to catch up
- 15:30Speaker 1: and watch these episodes, so what's the problem. And people
- 15:35Speaker 1: are still beefing? So I just want to double check
- 15:37Speaker 1: somebody double I just want to double check that you're
- 15:40Speaker 1: a forty six year old man who's been in the
- 15:41Speaker 1: public eye for most of your life and some comment
- 15:45Speaker 1: a guy mean on the internet upset you just double
- 15:46Speaker 1: checking absolutely yes, and it wasn't just a guy, it's
- 15:52Speaker 1: girls and guys. Okay, So literally literally, probably three people,
- 15:58Speaker 1: I would say about six six people have unraveled. That's awesome.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Six out of the out of the half a million
- 16:06Speaker 1: over half a million people that follow me playing now.
- 16:11Speaker 1: So wait, you're saying Donald, It's just so I'm clear,
- 16:14Speaker 1: you're saying that someone trolled the thing you do and
- 16:18Speaker 1: now you're gonna change it, and you're gonna change it
- 16:21Speaker 1: to what I'm just gonna give a summary of what
- 16:23Speaker 1: happens in the episode. By the way, you know, what
- 16:27Speaker 1: you should do is protests once in a while, is
- 16:29Speaker 1: you should just read Zack's end voice over words. But Bill,
- 16:41Speaker 1: but Bill, as you as you told us, they don't
- 16:45Speaker 1: really make much sense out of context. They're like, at
- 16:48Speaker 1: the end of the day, the friends that you have
- 16:50Speaker 1: are the best friends you're ever gonna have. That's what
- 16:53Speaker 1: you need to have. Friends. You're using half a little
- 16:56Speaker 1: too much, and that's bad writing, buddy, you're losing. You
- 16:59Speaker 1: use half three times. The friends you have are gonna
- 17:02Speaker 1: be the friends at the end of the day. The
- 17:03Speaker 1: friends you have will always be the friends you get.
- 17:06Speaker 1: So being happy with what you have obtained, all you need,
- 17:13Speaker 1: all you need is a slow motion crane shot and
- 17:16Speaker 1: a stad Indie song And I got tears of my hons. Well,
- 17:23Speaker 1: you're the one that taught me that. Actually, you're the
- 17:25Speaker 1: one that taught me that, Because it's no bullshit. Bill,
- 17:28Speaker 1: You're the one that told me that. And it's it's
- 17:30Speaker 1: it's so bad that I go to other jobs now
- 17:34Speaker 1: and writers will have, you know, it'll say something like that.
- 17:37Speaker 1: It'll be like, uh, we have to get out of
- 17:40Speaker 1: here because we have to find a way to you know,
- 17:44Speaker 1: do something. And I'm like, we're saying we have to
- 17:46Speaker 1: like twice, is there another way that we can do this? Right?
- 17:53Speaker 1: I see writers look at me like how do fun?
- 17:55Speaker 1: Who do who do? And it's always like I always
- 17:58Speaker 1: want to be like, well, you know, legendary comedy writer
- 18:01Speaker 1: Bill Lawrence talking you guys can you guys can do
- 18:05Speaker 1: it however you'd like. But just so you know, Bill Lawrence,
- 18:12Speaker 1: all right, so if I've got if I understand this rightly,
- 18:15Speaker 1: you're just gonna summarize the facts of the episode now
- 18:17Speaker 1: because you've been successfully trolled. Yes, just this one. And
- 18:22Speaker 1: I didn't know it was gonna be on the show.
- 18:23Speaker 1: I would have known Bill was gonna be on the show.
- 18:25Speaker 1: I said, And yeah, by the way, this is so,
- 18:28Speaker 1: this is the this is what you get when you
- 18:29Speaker 1: complain petulant recap. I like that, right, this is what
- 18:33Speaker 1: you get. This is what you get when you complain
- 18:36Speaker 1: ready one two? Alright. This episode shows every level of
- 18:42Speaker 1: the relationship. Elliott and Nurse Flowers are at the end
- 18:45Speaker 1: of Bears, Jordan and Cox are the brand new baby phase.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Turke and Carlor are now engaged and they're feeling the
- 18:51Speaker 1: pressure of having to follow through, and j D is
- 18:54Speaker 1: single and ready to mingle with tasty. Come a wife,
- 18:58Speaker 1: there you go. That's I don't. I don't, I don't,
- 19:02Speaker 1: I don't. I don't like it. I know you don't
- 19:04Speaker 1: like it. Yeah. For me, I have to be honest
- 19:09Speaker 1: with you, Donald, Um, there was something nice about you
- 19:13Speaker 1: as this many years later looking back and seeing the
- 19:16Speaker 1: episode as a whole and giving your emotional sort of
- 19:20Speaker 1: summary of it from someone who wasn't really to what
- 19:25Speaker 1: you've said before, wasn't really looking at it very closely
- 19:28Speaker 1: at the time, And now this many years later, you're
- 19:31Speaker 1: looking back at it and seeing something. I I think
- 19:34Speaker 1: that's very valuable and I think listen, if you're one
- 19:38Speaker 1: of the six people that successfully troll Donald, you can
- 19:41Speaker 1: type in episodes of Scrubs to sixteen summary and you'll
- 19:45Speaker 1: beat home run. There We'll go to Trevor Wicky and
- 19:48Speaker 1: he'll freaking summarize it for you. This is what you
- 19:51Speaker 1: get from being petty. Donald and Zack can't ask for this,
- 19:56Speaker 1: but I would ask people that are listening to that,
- 19:59Speaker 1: when love Donald's old summations, to please let him know
- 20:04Speaker 1: after this episode that you love the way he used
- 20:07Speaker 1: to do it, because I found it much more passionate
- 20:09Speaker 1: and I loved hearing him talk about it. I like
- 20:11Speaker 1: it the other way too. I'm not gonna lie to
- 20:13Speaker 1: you guys. So that was the only time, by the way,
- 20:15Speaker 1: and if if, no matter how long we do this podcast,
- 20:17Speaker 1: that is the only time you will ever hear Donald
- 20:20Speaker 1: do a true boring summary of the episode. I like that.
- 20:23Speaker 1: I like that you discover something, Donald, because let's be honest,
- 20:26Speaker 1: you were either on jazz Cabbage or playing a video
- 20:29Speaker 1: game and not really paying attention to what we were doing.
- 20:31Speaker 1: So now twenty years later you're looking back. I'll tell you,
- 20:37Speaker 1: you know, this episode it really makes you think about
- 20:41Speaker 1: the relationship that you're going that I'm going through right now,
- 20:43Speaker 1: and made me look at that, you know what I mean.
- 20:45Speaker 1: My wife and I have surpassed every level of relationship.
- 20:50Speaker 1: In this episode, We've had the kid and we you know,
- 20:55Speaker 1: they're growing. Now, we've already did the beginning dates, we
- 20:58Speaker 1: did the we did the breakup and then get back
- 21:01Speaker 1: together stuff, Like everything that's happened in this episode, my
- 21:04Speaker 1: wife and I have done. And that's the one thing,
- 21:07Speaker 1: because these characters are so new, that's the one thing
- 21:10Speaker 1: in this episode that is missing, if you ask me, uh,
- 21:14Speaker 1: is the successful We've done it all, but these guys
- 21:17Speaker 1: are finding each other and getting to know each other.
- 21:20Speaker 1: In my tasty come of wife this episode. This is
- 21:25Speaker 1: a really good episode. Laughed so many times, dude, I thought, Phil,
- 21:29Speaker 1: I'm so glad. First of all, I know that you
- 21:31Speaker 1: you technically write them all because you're overseeing the writer's room,
- 21:34Speaker 1: but your name is actually on this one, along with
- 21:37Speaker 1: Adam Bernstein, who's directed the pilot, And so I was
- 21:41Speaker 1: just so happy that I happened to ask you to
- 21:43Speaker 1: come on, because not only is it a great seminal
- 21:46Speaker 1: episode with a lot of great stuff in and very moving,
- 21:49Speaker 1: I thought at the end, but you happen to be
- 21:52Speaker 1: one with your with your name on the script, so
- 21:53Speaker 1: I was I was doubly glad you were here. And
- 21:55Speaker 1: Laverne has the best Laverne has the best line in
- 21:58Speaker 1: the show. Oh good episod this is good episode, which
- 22:04Speaker 1: one way I think I wrote down that line a
- 22:06Speaker 1: good Show Today, Good Show Today, Good Show Today. That's
- 22:12Speaker 1: sixth wrote that down. So the show opens up guys
- 22:16Speaker 1: with I'm trying to go in for a slow kiss
- 22:20Speaker 1: with Rowdy and the audience is the visual makes the
- 22:23Speaker 1: audience go, what the fuck is going on? And then
- 22:26Speaker 1: you reveal that Donald is coaching me because I haven't
- 22:29Speaker 1: been with a woman in a while and I'm rusty,
- 22:31Speaker 1: and he's giving me some some drills, kissing drills. I
- 22:36Speaker 1: think you always go left or right, right one of
- 22:37Speaker 1: the two. I always go right. I always go right,
- 22:41Speaker 1: and I'm I'm I'm. Basically, I just wanted to say
- 22:43Speaker 1: out loud that that Bill Lawrence got on television network television,
- 22:47Speaker 1: Um a show that opens with a man French kissing
- 22:50Speaker 1: at taxidermy dog. That makes me so happy. You know
- 22:58Speaker 1: what made me happy about that section? I know Donald's
- 23:00Speaker 1: heard it before. I wanted Donald to tell me if
- 23:01Speaker 1: it was real or not. When you're working your wrap
- 23:04Speaker 1: with that dog, I think you use your young Zach
- 23:07Speaker 1: Braff's sexy voice and uh, you know when he's like, hey,
- 23:10Speaker 1: you want some kibble and put and I put, I
- 23:14Speaker 1: put my finger on his lips, and I wanted to
- 23:18Speaker 1: ask Donald if he ever heard that sexy voice for real,
- 23:21Speaker 1: Zach trying to lay that sexy girl, that sexy voice
- 23:24Speaker 1: on people back in the day. No, you know, No,
- 23:27Speaker 1: I've never been I've never been next to Zach when
- 23:30Speaker 1: he has his game down. That's me. You've heared me,
- 23:36Speaker 1: never heard You've I've heard I've seen you be like
- 23:39Speaker 1: I'm going in and then you go in and then
- 23:42Speaker 1: come back like, oh yeah, it worked. But I've never
- 23:44Speaker 1: seen I've never been privy to Hey girl, I've never
- 23:49Speaker 1: I've never been pretty the music and you know the
- 23:52Speaker 1: in the song where the base finally gets to talk,
- 23:56Speaker 1: Hey girl, you come to the row, I have a
- 24:00Speaker 1: better I've never heard that moment. Well, my my game
- 24:05Speaker 1: isn't that good, but my game is certainly Uh. I
- 24:09Speaker 1: don't have a low base hey baby voice, but I did.
- 24:13Speaker 1: I did think it was just I loved what I
- 24:15Speaker 1: loved about the show Bill is what I'm saying is
- 24:17Speaker 1: that I'm saying in a joking way, but I just
- 24:20Speaker 1: love that how bizarre this show is that it opens
- 24:23Speaker 1: like this and then and then just when you think, like, Okay,
- 24:27Speaker 1: that was random and weird. Way later on, when I
- 24:30Speaker 1: go to kiss Amy Smart, you call it back because
- 24:33Speaker 1: here Donald's like, no, man, you go right too much.
- 24:35Speaker 1: You gotta go left when I'm leaning into kiss. And
- 24:37Speaker 1: then later I go to kiss Amy Smart and she's like, oh,
- 24:39Speaker 1: you went left, as if as if, by the way,
- 24:44Speaker 1: anyone has ever used that as a judgment factor for
- 24:48Speaker 1: kissing where you went after right? No one has ever
- 24:51Speaker 1: said that to anybody, right. It makes me think, and
- 24:53Speaker 1: I'm if you're listening right now, do you think about it?
- 24:55Speaker 1: Do you do you have a normal way that you
- 24:57Speaker 1: lean in to make hat with someone. I'm doing it
- 25:00Speaker 1: alone by myself right now. I think I probably do
- 25:02Speaker 1: normally favor left. Do you go right? Right? Dud I
- 25:07Speaker 1: go right? I would walk in well, because we both
- 25:12Speaker 1: go right, Joel, you go right. I don't know, right, Okay,
- 25:19Speaker 1: I don't know. I think I might be a lefty
- 25:20Speaker 1: when it comes to the leaning. Well, you're the question
- 25:23Speaker 1: that did she go left because that's the only way
- 25:25Speaker 1: it works, but is if she goes left also, I
- 25:28Speaker 1: don't know. I gotta tell you it's really I'm gonna
- 25:30Speaker 1: try later on and see what happens. But I think
- 25:32Speaker 1: I'm a lefty when it comes to that. Bill, I
- 25:34Speaker 1: couldn't help but wonder when Krista's being so incredibly horrible
- 25:38Speaker 1: to Johnny cum during during as they deal with their newborn,
- 25:43Speaker 1: if any of this could possibly have been based on
- 25:46Speaker 1: real life. Yeah, you guys are well aware that I
- 25:54Speaker 1: was just at this stage of having kids with Krista,
- 25:57Speaker 1: and that, uh, I, without a doubt lived in a
- 25:59Speaker 1: world that I was supposed to remove my shoes and
- 26:02Speaker 1: wash my hands, even though I still wasn't allowed to
- 26:04Speaker 1: hold my daughter. So uh, and it was a lot
- 26:10Speaker 1: of get out of the room, don't make noise, turn
- 26:12Speaker 1: that light off, Go get me this, go do that.
- 26:15Speaker 1: So yes, by the way, the only thing that was
- 26:17Speaker 1: different was I was not nearly shirtless, is often as
- 26:22Speaker 1: Johnny C chose to be around his wife in newborn.
- 26:25Speaker 1: Otherwise we're supposed to. Yeah, so Johnny C is is naked.
- 26:28Speaker 1: Now why do you do when you're in the writer's room,
- 26:31Speaker 1: are you guys at this point you know, end of
- 26:33Speaker 1: season two, sort of laughing like, oh, Johnny C loves
- 26:35Speaker 1: to be naked. Let's make him be naked and show
- 26:37Speaker 1: off his muscles. Uh do you do you really think
- 26:41Speaker 1: that we right? Johnny C shirtless or uh, you know
- 26:47Speaker 1: that one, that one we did it. Yeah, he normally
- 26:50Speaker 1: decides on his own, but this one we did script
- 26:52Speaker 1: because for full disclosure, we had seen so many scenes
- 26:56Speaker 1: that we hadn't written it um that we decided to
- 26:59Speaker 1: write it once and have her say we all get it,
- 27:02Speaker 1: you love your body. Then he puts on a Shocky jersey.
- 27:11Speaker 1: Is that a real sports player shocky or yeah? Jeremy
- 27:13Speaker 1: Shocky was a tight end for the New York Giants.
- 27:17Speaker 1: He was He played really well for us. His you know,
- 27:20Speaker 1: his football career was short. He had a pretty short
- 27:24Speaker 1: football career. Actually, he was really good. But then got
- 27:27Speaker 1: hurt a bunch of yeah, yeah, like a lot of heads,
- 27:29Speaker 1: Like he broke a lot of bones, I think, and
- 27:32Speaker 1: got his head hit. But he was a tight end.
- 27:34Speaker 1: He was like you know, before Tony Gonzalez, tight ends
- 27:39Speaker 1: were pretty much just blocking and everything like that, and
- 27:41Speaker 1: then Tony and yeah, yeah, there's a bunch of him
- 27:48Speaker 1: now And the best one ever is by far Bronkowski.
- 27:53Speaker 1: Like Gronkowski's taking everything and all of these other Titans
- 27:56Speaker 1: have done and turned it into a you know a
- 27:59Speaker 1: k eiver role that is very like it's it's it's
- 28:03Speaker 1: unheard of to have a bunch of receivers and your
- 28:06Speaker 1: best receiver be your tight end. You know what I mean?
- 28:08Speaker 1: And yeah, watch watch you don't watch Zack's eyes roll
- 28:11Speaker 1: back into his head when I say, but don't you
- 28:13Speaker 1: think Travis Kelsey is also kind of coming up behind shock,
- 28:16Speaker 1: coming up behind ground right now, and if he blows
- 28:19Speaker 1: his brains out? I have a question. I have a question, zactly.
- 28:25Speaker 1: I'm sorry, but we're talking about tight ends right now.
- 28:27Speaker 1: I have I literally, like j D, I swear to god,
- 28:32Speaker 1: you said tight end, and like j D, I went
- 28:34Speaker 1: off and started thinking about what I picture is a
- 28:37Speaker 1: tight end, a nice firm bottom. And then you guys
- 28:41Speaker 1: pulled me back when you said Grunkowski because I think
- 28:43Speaker 1: I know what that guy looks like. Can you explain
- 28:45Speaker 1: to the listeners who don't follow football what does a
- 28:48Speaker 1: tight end do? A tight end? Basically, A tight end
- 28:52Speaker 1: is basically a blocker. Really, It's like somebody who can
- 28:55Speaker 1: who you know, is on the line and blocks for
- 28:59Speaker 1: the quarterback, but is eligible to catch the ball also
- 29:03Speaker 1: if needed. You know what I mean, So you only
- 29:06Speaker 1: have a certain uh bunch of players that can actually
- 29:09Speaker 1: catch the ball. It's illegal for other players to do it. Oh,
- 29:12Speaker 1: I didn't know that the right. So you're saying, not
- 29:15Speaker 1: every player is allowed to catch the ball. No, they
- 29:18Speaker 1: have to be an eligible they have to be an
- 29:19Speaker 1: eligible receiver. Sometimes someone will have to tell the refs
- 29:22Speaker 1: that on a certain formation he is eligible, like alignment
- 29:26Speaker 1: can suddenly be eligible. But not everybody can catch the ball.
- 29:29Speaker 1: I had I did not know that. And then uh,
- 29:32Speaker 1: and then what Donald it? To make it more interesting,
- 29:34Speaker 1: what Donald and I are talking about is the position
- 29:37Speaker 1: is evolved because these guys are so big there to
- 29:40Speaker 1: these the new modern tight end is too big to
- 29:43Speaker 1: be covered by a little defensive back. Were the ones
- 29:45Speaker 1: that cover receivers and uh, too fast to be covered
- 29:49Speaker 1: by a big linebacker. And because these guys are now
- 29:51Speaker 1: become the kind of ultimate athletes on football teams, these
- 29:54Speaker 1: Travis kelsey Kelsey's and grons and Tony Gonzalez. Right, if
- 29:58Speaker 1: you have a good tight if you have a good
- 30:00Speaker 1: tight end, you all you got a good tight end. Donald, there,
- 30:04Speaker 1: now we're back on thank you very much, thank you.
- 30:10Speaker 1: Bronkowski has come out of retirement because Yeah, dude, he's
- 30:14Speaker 1: He's probably the most popular Titan ever in the history
- 30:17Speaker 1: of Titans. He's a character. He's like, I once worked
- 30:20Speaker 1: out with this dude, and when I tell you, holy
- 30:23Speaker 1: sh it, Like the workout I was doing was a
- 30:26Speaker 1: warm up for him, you know what I mean? And
- 30:28Speaker 1: I was I was sweating and jumping and lifting weights
- 30:31Speaker 1: and everything like that, and it was literally a warm
- 30:34Speaker 1: up for him. And then he went into something else after.
- 30:36Speaker 1: So you know, um, let's talk about how he's decided
- 30:42Speaker 1: to call me dogs names. But let's talk about these
- 30:45Speaker 1: pratfalls first though, man, because there are a couple of
- 30:47Speaker 1: platfalls in the opening that are pretty dope. One Ricky Schroeder.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Schroder has a great pratfall over the thing with the
- 30:55Speaker 1: blindfold on. Yeah, and then you have a great pratfall
- 30:59Speaker 1: epic one. Yeah. And I even winced it myself. I
- 31:04Speaker 1: was like, how did that not hurt? Because it's definitely
- 31:06Speaker 1: me doing it, and it looked like it fucking hurt.
- 31:08Speaker 1: It looked it looked like it really really hurt. And
- 31:11Speaker 1: you add the noise on those two, it seemed violent.
- 31:13Speaker 1: I liked it. I feel like if I was if
- 31:16Speaker 1: there was a sport that was stunt pratfalls. I could
- 31:19Speaker 1: I could be good at it. Well, your best pratfall
- 31:22Speaker 1: of all times with tasty Karma wife, either later this
- 31:25Speaker 1: year or next year when you fall down the stairs
- 31:27Speaker 1: at her husband's funeral. That's the next episode. I think.
- 31:31Speaker 1: I think that's coming up. Um. Also, I want to
- 31:34Speaker 1: give a shout out to Paige Peterson. She's been on
- 31:37Speaker 1: the show four times now and we want to and
- 31:40Speaker 1: we've yet to talk about her. She was the nurse
- 31:44Speaker 1: that said I'm having surgery right now or I'm having
- 31:47Speaker 1: whatever it is right now and loving it. This is
- 31:49Speaker 1: her fourth time on the episode, and she's the one
- 31:51Speaker 1: that says, you aren't you the one that likes to
- 31:54Speaker 1: make out with dogs right before you go into Wait
- 31:57Speaker 1: did you know her? How did you know her name?
- 31:58Speaker 1: Or you looked it up? I looked it up. Oh yeah,
- 32:01Speaker 1: that's nice. Yeah, it's good of you to give her
- 32:02Speaker 1: a shout out because she she actually she She's got
- 32:06Speaker 1: a lot of funny one liners and she did a
- 32:08Speaker 1: good job. It's also so hard back then to have
- 32:12Speaker 1: continuity and do a network show that like you're hoping
- 32:15Speaker 1: that people would see the same nurses and doctors that
- 32:18Speaker 1: don't necessarily speak every week, but still have those people
- 32:22Speaker 1: be in the background every week, you know. So it's
- 32:24Speaker 1: cool when we were able to do that with somebody. Yeah,
- 32:26Speaker 1: this was her last I think this is her last
- 32:28Speaker 1: episode unfortunately, but well I'm hoping that's because she went
- 32:31Speaker 1: and got lots more work somewhere else. Well she I
- 32:34Speaker 1: believe she did. I believe she did. I believe she
- 32:36Speaker 1: did get another job. She when she's she's she's talented
- 32:40Speaker 1: and funny and pretty. So those are good qualities to
- 32:42Speaker 1: have in Hollywood. Speaking of which, it leads to a
- 32:45Speaker 1: conversation about Amy Smart, which we're gonna have after this break,
- 32:48Speaker 1: because she certainly is pretty, and she certainly is funny,
- 32:51Speaker 1: and she does a great job in this episode. So
- 32:53Speaker 1: we will be right back for you, and we're bad
- 33:07Speaker 1: and back. Come on, Bill, you gotta do it the same.
- 33:13Speaker 1: I gotta tell you, I'm still by the way. So
- 33:15Speaker 1: what's the early verdict on interrupting Bill on that? I
- 33:18Speaker 1: love you guys, how you guys feeling it and people
- 33:20Speaker 1: really like it and the fans love it, and I
- 33:23Speaker 1: felt bad because, um, your your your tone in the
- 33:26Speaker 1: second one was sort of build and I said, I
- 33:30Speaker 1: don't know if you heard the last episode, but I
- 33:31Speaker 1: was like, I think we may have heard Bill's feelings.
- 33:33Speaker 1: And I was like, Bill, You're allowed to go on
- 33:37Speaker 1: as long as you want, even if you want to
- 33:39Speaker 1: do a seven minute money log. It is fine by
- 33:41Speaker 1: us the fans. By the way, we didn't hurt Bill's feeling.
- 33:44Speaker 1: It was Donald said he was cool with it, and
- 33:50Speaker 1: Donald said, I'm fine Donalds. I think the quote is
- 33:53Speaker 1: I'm fine with it. It's Bill, I'm fine with it.
- 33:56Speaker 1: And then if I'm just I can't remember the specific
- 34:00Speaker 1: but I think it was exactly Zack who said the
- 34:07Speaker 1: funny thing was wait, the funny thing was on your
- 34:09Speaker 1: last bit of trivia? The answer was Elizabeth Banks. And
- 34:11Speaker 1: I didn't get it at all, but Donald knew it,
- 34:13Speaker 1: and you and the only thing you'd recorded is thanks Zak,
- 34:16Speaker 1: I'm sure you're the one who got it. It was
- 34:20Speaker 1: so by the way, I know, but I don't expect,
- 34:22Speaker 1: because of Donald's rep on the show for him to
- 34:24Speaker 1: remember this stuff. So when he does get what, I'm
- 34:26Speaker 1: happily surprised. Are you kidding me? When Elizabeth Banks came
- 34:29Speaker 1: on the show, I thought it was the biggest deal
- 34:32Speaker 1: after watching Uh the four year Old Virgin and he goes,
- 34:35Speaker 1: I'm gonna put my bicycle in your trunk and she goes, oh.
- 34:38Speaker 1: And then when she came onto show, I was like,
- 34:43Speaker 1: I'm paying attention to this. I want to talk about
- 34:48Speaker 1: something before we go forward with the Amy smart thing.
- 34:50Speaker 1: Ralph he's back on this episode and and somebody said
- 34:55Speaker 1: to me on the into Web and I'm not sure
- 34:57Speaker 1: if this is true because now I don't I don't.
- 34:59Speaker 1: I didn't remember the young man's name. But apparently Ralphie
- 35:02Speaker 1: is in Shazam. Oh ship is he really? That's cool?
- 35:06Speaker 1: Apparently Ralphie's in Shazamn, either as one of the kids
- 35:09Speaker 1: or as uh, the one of the super kids. This
- 35:16Speaker 1: is nineteen years ago. He's not a kid or then
- 35:19Speaker 1: as one of the superheroes. This could because there's a
- 35:21Speaker 1: whole bunch of there's a whole bunch of Shazam's at
- 35:23Speaker 1: the end of sam at the end of spoiler were
- 35:26Speaker 1: you trying to figure out and maybe Joel if you
- 35:29Speaker 1: could send us in the chat a picture of what
- 35:30Speaker 1: he looks like today, because I'm dying to know. But
- 35:33Speaker 1: I actually saw that and I saw that movie in
- 35:36Speaker 1: the theaters because Zach is the star of Zach play
- 35:38Speaker 1: Sasam in that no, no bill, that's a different that's
- 35:41Speaker 1: a different sact. What if I was in Chasam, you
- 35:47Speaker 1: guys would all have amphibious a t vs like like
- 35:51Speaker 1: Kanye West just gave three chains. Although I don't think
- 35:55Speaker 1: you're correct about Joey being in Shazam, Okay, but it
- 35:58Speaker 1: wasn't me that somebody. Somebody said it to me. Uh
- 36:02Speaker 1: And now that person was wrong there, that's that's the
- 36:05Speaker 1: same person that was wrong about how brilliant your summaries
- 36:07Speaker 1: of the episodes are. Thank you, Thank you person who
- 36:10Speaker 1: said that Joey was in Shazam. You were wrong. So
- 36:14Speaker 1: you were correct about something. Though last week Joey was
- 36:17Speaker 1: in the gag reel um absolutely thrown into the glass
- 36:21Speaker 1: door exit by accident. Yeah, I remember that, tossed into it.
- 36:28Speaker 1: I also remembered on the gag reel for those of
- 36:30Speaker 1: you whould like to go back and look at them.
- 36:32Speaker 1: And by the way, if you don't know, we sometimes
- 36:34Speaker 1: use the words interchangeably for those of you who don't know,
- 36:37Speaker 1: a gag and blooper reel or something we cut together
- 36:41Speaker 1: at the end of every season they're just kind of
- 36:43Speaker 1: the mistakes, funny, funny mistakes from when we're filming, and
- 36:46Speaker 1: I think they're all on YouTube. You can look up
- 36:48Speaker 1: for example, Season two scrubs. They'll either say blooper or gag.
- 36:52Speaker 1: They're kind of used interchangeably, and they're very funny. And
- 36:56Speaker 1: one of the things not only is Ralphie hitting the
- 36:58Speaker 1: door on there, but in this episode when Donald falls
- 37:01Speaker 1: over Rowdy. Do you remember this. I don't know if
- 37:04Speaker 1: I remember. A crew member was like holding up Rowdy
- 37:08Speaker 1: to make sure he didn't fall over something. We had Rowdy.
- 37:11Speaker 1: It wasn't held up but Zach. We had Rowdy, uh,
- 37:14Speaker 1: because he had trouble standing at that point because some
- 37:17Speaker 1: of his legs strength has deteriorated. Rowdy had to be
- 37:24Speaker 1: kind of fastened. I was rowdy, Riggs, I forgot he
- 37:30Speaker 1: was Rowdy was fastened. He was kind of fastened to
- 37:33Speaker 1: the little carpeting thing there to stand upright, you know
- 37:36Speaker 1: what I mean. And the assumption was when Donald would
- 37:39Speaker 1: hit Rowdy that he would go down, but I still couldn't.
- 37:42Speaker 1: I still couldn't. The joke is I've tripped over Rowdy
- 37:46Speaker 1: and but Rowdy couldn't fall or didn't look right, and
- 37:49Speaker 1: so I had to pretend that I tripped over rowdy
- 37:53Speaker 1: with knocking rowdy over, which makes which makes up to
- 37:57Speaker 1: stay up as if rowdy was solid it and Donald
- 38:00Speaker 1: just fell down, not like fell on top of Rowdy.
- 38:03Speaker 1: So on the gag reel, which you'll see, is that
- 38:05Speaker 1: Donald trips over rowdy, Rowdy falls down and then magically
- 38:10Speaker 1: pops back up again. I remember, Donald, you started I
- 38:16Speaker 1: read the whole crew started cackling. It was so fucking funny.
- 38:19Speaker 1: I when I saw the when I saw the gag
- 38:21Speaker 1: on this, when I saw the the stunt fall on this,
- 38:25Speaker 1: I went, oh my god, I remember that moment, and
- 38:27Speaker 1: this is like nineteen years ago. That's how funny it was.
- 38:30Speaker 1: It was very disturbing too, because it made the dog seem,
- 38:32Speaker 1: you know, like it was. Um, well, Bill, I what
- 38:39Speaker 1: was the story about Amy? I mean, I'm sure that
- 38:42Speaker 1: I had if you had asked me, and you would say, hey,
- 38:45Speaker 1: we need a very funny, attractive new love interest for you.
- 38:49Speaker 1: If if the year was two thousand two, I probably
- 38:51Speaker 1: like any heart, because um, I think that you know,
- 38:55Speaker 1: she's obviously a beauty, but I really think she's got
- 38:58Speaker 1: comedic chops and I thought she was really really good
- 39:01Speaker 1: in this episode. Well you know, it's uh, we had
- 39:04Speaker 1: it randomly, you'd be surprised. But a lot of times casting,
- 39:09Speaker 1: especially if it's not huge stock, casting starts much like
- 39:13Speaker 1: Donald said about Elizabeth Banks, who obviously is a huge
- 39:16Speaker 1: star now and back there was doing uh whatever horse
- 39:20Speaker 1: movie was and Virgin you know, and all that stuff
- 39:23Speaker 1: and just kind of getting her career going. What was
- 39:24Speaker 1: the horse movie she was? She played Jeff Bridge's young
- 39:27Speaker 1: wife was No one even knows that's her? Um, what
- 39:32Speaker 1: the horse whisperer? No? Did you guys? You guys get this.
- 39:35Speaker 1: It's the Sea Biscuit. She played Jeff Bridge's young wife
- 39:38Speaker 1: in that with brown hair. And she was also in
- 39:41Speaker 1: Catch Me if you can. I think with Leo. I
- 39:42Speaker 1: think she had a Leo. She was also in all
- 39:45Speaker 1: of the Spider Man movies as the secretary for J.
- 39:49Speaker 1: James J. Jamison. That's his name, right, J. J. Jonah Jamison.
- 39:53Speaker 1: And then uh so, But the point is like that
- 39:57Speaker 1: sometimes casting will come us who when people are starting
- 40:00Speaker 1: to dig the show, and we'll do it from us
- 40:03Speaker 1: having watched a movie. And I think a bunch of
- 40:07Speaker 1: the writers in the room saw a road Trip because
- 40:10Speaker 1: they cast both Amy Smart and remember DJ Qualls or
- 40:14Speaker 1: whatever his name, the tall kind of dork yet they
- 40:16Speaker 1: were both from Road Trips. Would be like, hey, this
- 40:18Speaker 1: is a funny movie with people doing comedy and the
- 40:20Speaker 1: cool thing was Scrubs. At this point had reached the
- 40:23Speaker 1: stage that when you reached out to people like that
- 40:26Speaker 1: if they had seen the show, like Amy was really
- 40:28Speaker 1: cool about going, yeah, I'll come to a bunch, you know,
- 40:30Speaker 1: so I think and I knew her. I knew her,
- 40:33Speaker 1: I knew we're a little bit as a through mutual
- 40:35Speaker 1: friends and um, through me, dude, No, not through you,
- 40:40Speaker 1: through Johnson Man. Actually, well, I've known Amy since road
- 40:43Speaker 1: Trip when I was doing Remember the Titan, she was
- 40:45Speaker 1: doing road Trip, and then I did Felicity and she
- 40:49Speaker 1: was on Felicity at the same time as I was,
- 40:51Speaker 1: and then she came and did Scrubs. So I'm pretty
- 40:55Speaker 1: sure at some point I there was and it might
- 40:58Speaker 1: have been Josh Rading but ye, but John was dating
- 41:00Speaker 1: Josh was dating Um at the time. Um her Amy's
- 41:05Speaker 1: best friend a woman named Debra, and uh, so I anyway,
- 41:09Speaker 1: I knew her a little bit, and uh, whatever happened happened,
- 41:12Speaker 1: and Uh, she's just great on the show. And I
- 41:14Speaker 1: thought it was very funny Bill, the setup you wrote
- 41:17Speaker 1: where you're setting up the saddest story ever, Like her
- 41:20Speaker 1: husband's in a coma, she's a she's been left all alone,
- 41:23Speaker 1: she's a young bride. It's so tragic, and that you're
- 41:26Speaker 1: like totally eating the audience down this down this hole.
- 41:29Speaker 1: And then it cuts to the classic Scrubs sexy turnaround
- 41:33Speaker 1: with the wind and everything was so funny. Yeah, I
- 41:36Speaker 1: think your voice are like Also, she happens to be
- 41:38Speaker 1: incredibly hot. Everybody calls her tasty Comma wife or something
- 41:40Speaker 1: like that. I remember getting a note on, uh, tasty
- 41:44Speaker 1: Comma wife of the I don't think it was a
- 41:48Speaker 1: huge one. But whoever covered the show from NBC thinking
- 41:51Speaker 1: that was too insensitive for not only thinking that was
- 41:54Speaker 1: too insensitive for everybody, you know, all my characters what
- 41:58Speaker 1: you like to call her that? But but us of
- 42:00Speaker 1: that note, Um, we wrote into the script that you
- 42:03Speaker 1: were the one, your character was the one that gave
- 42:05Speaker 1: her that nickname. Remember at the end, she's like, it's like,
- 42:08Speaker 1: do people call me tasty calm a wife? And you're like,
- 42:10Speaker 1: I don't know, she's like, I love it, and you're like,
- 42:12Speaker 1: I thought it up. So I met few people who
- 42:15Speaker 1: are listening. Bill would be interested to note that that,
- 42:18Speaker 1: you know, you gotta hit show because, as it says
- 42:21Speaker 1: on Scrubs Wiki, season two was our biggest season in
- 42:24Speaker 1: terms of viewership ever. And you're still getting minutia notes
- 42:28Speaker 1: like that from from a from a network. Yeah, but
- 42:33Speaker 1: you realized that. Yeah, But it's a good thing because
- 42:36Speaker 1: all it really means is when the show is doing well.
- 42:39Speaker 1: The people that work on the networks, they're there because
- 42:42Speaker 1: they love TV. That's why they're not in business, you know,
- 42:45Speaker 1: That's why they didn't go to, you know, into the
- 42:48Speaker 1: financial world. And so once the show has some heat
- 42:51Speaker 1: and buzz behind it, it's even more exciting to try
- 42:54Speaker 1: and contribute and give your two cents. And it's never malicious,
- 42:57Speaker 1: you know, wouldn't it be more interesting if they did this?
- 42:59Speaker 1: It wouldn't be cool if they did that. And then
- 43:01Speaker 1: as producers, you make the choice do we let everybody
- 43:04Speaker 1: feel the pride of ownership, which we like to do
- 43:07Speaker 1: on this show, or um, do you get jerky and
- 43:11Speaker 1: go hey, now that we have leverage, we don't those
- 43:13Speaker 1: in't anything you say, which I think is kind of
- 43:15Speaker 1: productive because then people aren't looking too And you know,
- 43:18Speaker 1: with us, especially with the Disney folks who gave us notes,
- 43:22Speaker 1: you know, we loved them feeling like they were part
- 43:25Speaker 1: of the creative part of the shop. Remember when we
- 43:27Speaker 1: did the musical and the president of Disney Studios, Mark Petalitz,
- 43:30Speaker 1: like rented a whole theater for us and had us
- 43:32Speaker 1: all go watch the musical on a big movie theater
- 43:35Speaker 1: and stuff. And that's because they felt like they were
- 43:37Speaker 1: all part of it, you know what I mean. And
- 43:38Speaker 1: you also you also become friends with people in time,
- 43:41Speaker 1: you know what I mean. I'm not gonna lie. I
- 43:44Speaker 1: have a bunch of friends, well a few, I shan't
- 43:46Speaker 1: say a bunch. I have a few friends that are
- 43:48Speaker 1: actual network executives, now you know what I mean. And work,
- 43:51Speaker 1: you guys would run into Julia friends who helped run
- 43:54Speaker 1: that run Disney Studios all the time, and she was
- 43:56Speaker 1: such a huge, you know, cheerleader for the show. I
- 44:00Speaker 1: remember all you guys having great relationships with it. It
- 44:01Speaker 1: makes such a difference when you have an executive who
- 44:04Speaker 1: really gets it and and campaigns for the show. Because
- 44:08Speaker 1: I feel like these are these decisions on your life
- 44:11Speaker 1: or death or just made in in conference rooms. I mean,
- 44:14Speaker 1: the numbers are looked at and judged, and I'm sure,
- 44:17Speaker 1: but but there's also like the when it's on the bubble,
- 44:20Speaker 1: the the how many people in the room were going, no,
- 44:22Speaker 1: trust me, just give it a chance, and and and
- 44:26Speaker 1: as opposed to people going ah and and if you're
- 44:28Speaker 1: it sounds like what you're saying is also that if
- 44:30Speaker 1: you're the show running, you're a dick and you're on
- 44:33Speaker 1: the bubble, people are like, you know, what funk that guy? No,
- 44:35Speaker 1: cancel it? You know it's it's it's interesting. I do
- 44:38Speaker 1: agree with that, you know, I think you have to
- 44:41Speaker 1: find that fine line of you know, standing up for
- 44:44Speaker 1: what you care about creatively and not capitulating. But also,
- 44:48Speaker 1: if people are invested in the show, why not, you know,
- 44:52Speaker 1: let them feel the private ownership of their working their
- 44:54Speaker 1: butts off on it. I will say, like for us,
- 44:56Speaker 1: there's an absolute direct correlation to the seventh year. I
- 45:01Speaker 1: didn't care when this show ended after we got through
- 45:05Speaker 1: six years as long as we knew, because I knew
- 45:07Speaker 1: how I wanted the show to end. In the seventh year,
- 45:10Speaker 1: the show almost ended without us being able to control
- 45:13Speaker 1: it because of the writer's strike. And I think it
- 45:16Speaker 1: was only because how the writers and how all you
- 45:19Speaker 1: guys reacted towards Disney our studio that when NBC said
- 45:23Speaker 1: writers strike and we're done, the ABC called up and said,
- 45:26Speaker 1: how do you guys like to switch to another network
- 45:28Speaker 1: and do your last season? And I that was one
- 45:31Speaker 1: of my favorite seasons of the show, season eight. So um,
- 45:34Speaker 1: I think that happened in part because we considered them
- 45:37Speaker 1: part of our team. You know what season was it
- 45:39Speaker 1: that we took so we are hiatus was so long
- 45:42Speaker 1: one time? No, it wasn't it was. It was almost
- 45:46Speaker 1: a year. Yeah, it was because season seven ended right
- 45:50Speaker 1: in the early part of the season and season eight
- 45:53Speaker 1: we decided to move it over to ABC, and uh,
- 45:56Speaker 1: there was a long gap before we started shooting. I
- 46:00Speaker 1: think it might have it might have been a full
- 46:01Speaker 1: calendar year. It was crazy. Yeah, I feel you reminded
- 46:05Speaker 1: me that I felt sad. I has a sad about
- 46:09Speaker 1: the sort of medieval Times episode we we did because
- 46:13Speaker 1: I put so much love and work in directing it,
- 46:17Speaker 1: and you put so much love and work into writing it,
- 46:21Speaker 1: and because of what was happening in the writer strike
- 46:23Speaker 1: that that would have been the series finale of Scrubs.
- 46:27Speaker 1: I feel like I was super underappreciated because man, that
- 46:30Speaker 1: was a expensive, slash artistic, slash fun episode to do,
- 46:35Speaker 1: and I didn't think it ever got any love. No,
- 46:38Speaker 1: it was. And remember NBC, because there was a strike
- 46:41Speaker 1: and they didn't care about anything other than bottom line
- 46:45Speaker 1: at that point, jig juggled the order of episodes to
- 46:49Speaker 1: air that last as if it was the season finality,
- 46:51Speaker 1: and it made no sense. Yeah, and a lot of
- 46:54Speaker 1: people are like, that's it, that's how you're ending the show,
- 46:57Speaker 1: and we're like, no, we didn't mean to please like it. Phil.
- 47:00Speaker 1: It was very upsetting as an homage to the Princess Bride. Man,
- 47:03Speaker 1: it's a great episode, just so cool. Oh man, I
- 47:06Speaker 1: love that episode. And no one ever talks about. Whenever
- 47:08Speaker 1: we like bring up conversations about what's your favorite episode,
- 47:11Speaker 1: they say the musical, they say the Brandon Frasier episode.
- 47:14Speaker 1: You know, all the standards, but no one ever ever
- 47:16Speaker 1: mentioned that episode. And I thought it was really good.
- 47:23Speaker 1: Um Um, could I say something? I want to We
- 47:26Speaker 1: almost skipped pasting this one is twenty one. I'm doing
- 47:29Speaker 1: a thing because it's a compliment to Donald. I loved
- 47:33Speaker 1: because we did a bunch of different versions over the years,
- 47:35Speaker 1: and Donald might not remember. Uh. When Laverne went Aloma
- 47:41Speaker 1: would kind of break into Donald's questions and he would say,
- 47:44Speaker 1: like you would say, like, we're only deal when people
- 47:46Speaker 1: are invited. In this one, he says, I checked the
- 47:48Speaker 1: guest list for this conversation, and you're not on it
- 47:51Speaker 1: in this one. That's it. I remember that. So this
- 47:54Speaker 1: is one. This is one. At the end, you made
- 47:55Speaker 1: a noise and I remember seeing that that and they
- 47:58Speaker 1: made me so because there's you're not an I don't
- 48:01Speaker 1: know what, but it was fantastic accepted and received. I
- 48:07Speaker 1: don't know where that came from. I watched it today
- 48:08Speaker 1: and I laughed my ass off at this. I noticed now,
- 48:15Speaker 1: But I noticed now at this point in the show,
- 48:18Speaker 1: I started getting really comfortable. You know what I mean.
- 48:21Speaker 1: If you're watching the show from the beginning when we started.
- 48:25Speaker 1: Like as much as as much as I like to
- 48:27Speaker 1: think that I knew about comedy when we started, I
- 48:32Speaker 1: feel like I was, out of everyone, the one who
- 48:36Speaker 1: had the hardest time picking up jokes. And the crazy
- 48:40Speaker 1: thing was you kept writing jokes for me, and sometimes
- 48:43Speaker 1: I would nail them and sometimes I wouldn't. But I'm
- 48:46Speaker 1: starting to notice as it's going on now I'm starting
- 48:49Speaker 1: to get comfortable with the character. And it's it doesn't
- 48:52Speaker 1: feel like like it sounded like it felt like before
- 48:54Speaker 1: that I was reading it or I was forcing it,
- 48:57Speaker 1: and now I'm just starting to relax. Yeah, but you're
- 49:00Speaker 1: you're you're just doing Yes, you can tell how naturalistic
- 49:02Speaker 1: you are now, but you're just harsh on yourself away
- 49:04Speaker 1: all performers do. You were always funny, dude. I love
- 49:07Speaker 1: that you put yourself under that critical eye, but it's
- 49:09Speaker 1: it's not true. But no. But also one thing I'll
- 49:11Speaker 1: say Bill is to use a sports term, is that
- 49:14Speaker 1: he is in the zone in this episode. There's there's
- 49:17Speaker 1: lots of little riffing. You're doing Donald, You're feeling confident.
- 49:20Speaker 1: I thought you were really good in this episode, the
- 49:23Speaker 1: both doing uh and the end when he's mad at
- 49:26Speaker 1: Ralphie when he says, you shut your mouth right now,
- 49:32Speaker 1: by the way, which is a surer. Right now, I
- 49:41Speaker 1: gotta interrupting. It's an interrupting Bill moment. While I'm here,
- 49:46Speaker 1: I don't know what the song is interrupted. Bill interrupted,
- 49:51Speaker 1: So for real. We would occasionally have recurred jokes over
- 49:54Speaker 1: the years that you were listening on the board. You
- 49:56Speaker 1: guys wouldn't recognize them because they're just tiny jokes that
- 49:59Speaker 1: we thought keep going. And one of Donald's was there
- 50:03Speaker 1: was four different times across the years that Donald told
- 50:05Speaker 1: Laverne that he, uh, unless she got an invitation, she
- 50:09Speaker 1: should sit down. He's seen the guest list, She's not
- 50:12Speaker 1: on it. He didn't. He did that to her so
- 50:14Speaker 1: many times, do you know? And it happened at the
- 50:17Speaker 1: the nine minute mark. What a weird reoccurring joke was
- 50:20Speaker 1: for you, Zack in reference to um calling yourself the boat,
- 50:27Speaker 1: do you know what the reoccurring joke is? The reoccurring
- 50:29Speaker 1: joke is that I, in my voiceover, I say that
- 50:34Speaker 1: I clearly wanted a cool nickname for myself and I'm
- 50:37Speaker 1: always auditioning them. The boat would be a cool nickname.
- 50:41Speaker 1: And then something and then something happens, and I'm like,
- 50:43Speaker 1: way to go boat. You have you go back and
- 50:47Speaker 1: watched this series. There's eight different times that you're trying
- 50:50Speaker 1: to have a nickname, whether it be a lion or
- 50:53Speaker 1: tiger or whatever, just catch hold, and it never does.
- 50:57Speaker 1: And one of the things they said at the beginning
- 50:58Speaker 1: of this series was j D should always wish he
- 51:00Speaker 1: had a nickname and never get one. That's funny. That's
- 51:05Speaker 1: very funny. That's funny. I didn't know. I didn't. I
- 51:08Speaker 1: didn't clock it as recurring. But I did laugh at
- 51:10Speaker 1: at at me calling my trying to get my own name.
- 51:13Speaker 1: It's funny because you can't get your own nickname, going
- 51:16Speaker 1: like no, yeah, if you try so many times. I
- 51:18Speaker 1: think sometimes Donald says to your someone says she, no
- 51:21Speaker 1: matter how bad you want it, no one's ever going
- 51:22Speaker 1: to call you big cat or call you Lyne or
- 51:24Speaker 1: something that's in a different episode. Um, I laughed. I
- 51:28Speaker 1: think I improved this bill when when Amy Smart says
- 51:31Speaker 1: you have something on your cheek and I go working
- 51:34Speaker 1: in a hospital, did you make it? Who made was that?
- 51:40Speaker 1: Adam or you? That made her lick you? I'm about
- 51:43Speaker 1: to say, where did that come from? No? That was script.
- 51:47Speaker 1: She wasn't the script. She's not randomly licking me. Well, No,
- 51:50Speaker 1: I think I think that it's like I'll get it
- 51:53Speaker 1: and she does something aggressive was there? But I think
- 51:55Speaker 1: that it was probably an actress or direct or choice
- 51:57Speaker 1: to go just lick it off. Yeah, I mean I
- 51:59Speaker 1: think is probably lick your thigh and to kiss it
- 52:02Speaker 1: or something. I I certainly wasn't being like to Amy
- 52:05Speaker 1: smart like what if you were to look I was,
- 52:09Speaker 1: I wasn't implying. I was not implying that you're doing.
- 52:12Speaker 1: Maybe instead of licking your finger and touch, you should
- 52:15Speaker 1: lick my face in this moment, Amy, Amy, Amy, Amy,
- 52:18Speaker 1: do you see on the sides, So it says she
- 52:20Speaker 1: licks her thumb. What if you just lick my face?
- 52:28Speaker 1: When Donald goes, when um Donald? When Judy says that
- 52:33Speaker 1: was there's something about sleep toots? And then you do
- 52:36Speaker 1: the sound of them? What's the sound you make? You do?
- 52:41Speaker 1: You do air first you go? I always had that.
- 52:47Speaker 1: I always wondered why do farts see it? Sound like
- 52:50Speaker 1: they're asking a question? It always well, I love it,
- 53:02Speaker 1: I love it. And then Nurse Roberts says, like I
- 53:04Speaker 1: make Mr Roberts where air tight boxers burnt? By the way,
- 53:15Speaker 1: and she is always contributing in your ship more than anybody's.
- 53:19Speaker 1: If she hears you talking to someone, she gets into it,
- 53:21Speaker 1: which really makes people. Let's talk about Elliott sabotaging her relationship.
- 53:25Speaker 1: She's finally got some joy. She's finally we in the
- 53:28Speaker 1: last episode, she finally said that she's happy, um, for
- 53:32Speaker 1: the first time in her life. Donald and I were
- 53:33Speaker 1: talking about the last episode how Elliott's sort of bopping
- 53:36Speaker 1: around in the rare like non neurotic mood, and now
- 53:39Speaker 1: she's already wanting to sabotage it because she she she's
- 53:43Speaker 1: I don't know that's what she does. Right, Well, look
- 53:46Speaker 1: this with this you'll find interesting because we this script
- 53:49Speaker 1: was easy to write because we come up with premises
- 53:53Speaker 1: ahead of time, right, and we thought, um, you know
- 53:56Speaker 1: it'd be cool is Donald and Judy carl in Turk
- 54:00Speaker 1: we set up because remember that kid had eaten a
- 54:04Speaker 1: ring and gotten paid. We knew we had to bring
- 54:06Speaker 1: it back. Donald paid him not to say anything, so
- 54:08Speaker 1: we knew that was gonna be a problem. Johnny c
- 54:10Speaker 1: you know Dr Cox and Jordan's you know, had to
- 54:13Speaker 1: have We didn't have a problem for Rick and h Elliott. Yeah,
- 54:16Speaker 1: but Dr Cox and Jordan were dealing with the kid.
- 54:19Speaker 1: And usually our episodes, everybody has to figure out how
- 54:22Speaker 1: to have a solution, you know, in you know, how
- 54:25Speaker 1: to get to the solution of their story. And this
- 54:27Speaker 1: one we said, you know'd be cool is we don't
- 54:30Speaker 1: ever have to do the solution if they're just all
- 54:33Speaker 1: having petty ship go on, And because j D is
- 54:36Speaker 1: so alone, he yells at them for not realizing that
- 54:39Speaker 1: they got it better than him, and that makes all
- 54:42Speaker 1: their problems go away. So you didn't even have to
- 54:44Speaker 1: do the story work at the end, you know what
- 54:46Speaker 1: I mean. So that's how we came up with the
- 54:48Speaker 1: way we came up with the Elliott and Nurse Flowers
- 54:50Speaker 1: things to go. What could she cause ship over just
- 54:53Speaker 1: because she's scared that she's starting to like the guy?
- 54:55Speaker 1: You know? Yeah? Yeah, it's clever the way you structured
- 54:59Speaker 1: this because it's j D, who's lonesome and single, who
- 55:05Speaker 1: wants more than anything to find love I mean jokingly.
- 55:08Speaker 1: The episode opens with him running drills on kissing because
- 55:11Speaker 1: it's been so long since he kissed anybody, and and
- 55:14Speaker 1: then seeing him seeing all these relationships in various stages,
- 55:19Speaker 1: in various you know, forms of of disarray, and then
- 55:24Speaker 1: it sort of bubbles up with the monologue at the
- 55:27Speaker 1: end where I just explode, like how the how the
- 55:29Speaker 1: fund did you? Guys don't realize how lucky you are
- 55:32Speaker 1: to be with someone well, because it's it's you almost
- 55:35Speaker 1: j D almost crosses a line though, you know what
- 55:38Speaker 1: I mean, He almost goes against the moral code. This
- 55:43Speaker 1: woman has a husband who's not in the ground yet
- 55:47Speaker 1: and still even though he's probably not gonna make it
- 55:51Speaker 1: through this, she uh, she needs to handle that first
- 55:56Speaker 1: and deal with all of that first before she goes
- 55:58Speaker 1: into a relationship. And she shows weakness and j D
- 56:03Speaker 1: almost pounces on it, you know what I mean. And
- 56:07Speaker 1: so I also think the blow up at the end
- 56:10Speaker 1: was you know, him realizing, holy sh it, I almost
- 56:14Speaker 1: went there, and these are right his it's his own
- 56:18Speaker 1: thing too. You're right, you're right, you're right. I never
- 56:20Speaker 1: even saw that. It's it's that's a good point down.
- 56:22Speaker 1: It's sort of his own, you know sometimes when like
- 56:24Speaker 1: you have your own conscience bubbling up and you don't
- 56:26Speaker 1: even know it. And he sort of explodes on everyone else.
- 56:29Speaker 1: Part of that monologue at the end, when he's just
- 56:31Speaker 1: berating everyone is his own frustration that he's got no
- 56:36Speaker 1: one and he's so alone and now all of a sudden,
- 56:39Speaker 1: here's this amazing woman who's so pretty and so into
- 56:42Speaker 1: him and so in on the joke and silly and funny,
- 56:44Speaker 1: and she's like his perfect dream girl, and and his
- 56:47Speaker 1: his conscience and his morals make him stop it. And
- 56:51Speaker 1: then they're all fighting, and he's like, you fuckers, don't
- 56:54Speaker 1: you realize how lucky you are to have someone I
- 56:57Speaker 1: don't think it was really good. Yeah, I wrote that down.
- 57:00Speaker 1: That's the It's an amazing blow up. Not only you're
- 57:04Speaker 1: acting at that moment, but also Okay, you do a
- 57:09Speaker 1: great job at it, and uh and and it's very
- 57:14Speaker 1: easy for the audience and our characters to have sympathy
- 57:18Speaker 1: for you after you have that moment, you know what
- 57:20Speaker 1: I mean. Um, but it's amazing how it was, how
- 57:25Speaker 1: it's presented. Also, it gets to a point where, you know,
- 57:29Speaker 1: the hero of our of our show almost becomes a villain,
- 57:34Speaker 1: and it's and stops himself from becoming that person, and
- 57:37Speaker 1: he's gonna you know, he's gonna trade. It comes up
- 57:39Speaker 1: again later on in the in the next You think
- 57:41Speaker 1: the audience would really think him as villainous? I mean,
- 57:43Speaker 1: wouldn't Yeah really, but don't you think there'd be a
- 57:47Speaker 1: certain percentage of the audience would be like, I get it,
- 57:51Speaker 1: I do it, I do it right. Well, that's the
- 57:53Speaker 1: dilemma I would you, would you or would you if somebody,
- 57:56Speaker 1: if somebody had somebody who was on the verge of
- 57:59Speaker 1: passing way but has not yet passed away, would you
- 58:02Speaker 1: let that person have the moment to grieve and and
- 58:05Speaker 1: move on or would you slide in at their weakest moment?
- 58:09Speaker 1: I think, But she asked him out and they're drinking.
- 58:15Speaker 1: I love this argument. This is the argument that writers
- 58:17Speaker 1: want you guys to have. You guys know that like
- 58:20Speaker 1: so much. So is transporting me back one of the
- 58:23Speaker 1: things we did in this show when we wrote it,
- 58:25Speaker 1: because Donald is correct in that, you know, we wanted
- 58:28Speaker 1: people to go and to not want Zach to do
- 58:31Speaker 1: this and did not want j D to do this.
- 58:34Speaker 1: And the way that we got there was we're so
- 58:37Speaker 1: lucky we have a show of fantasies and that the
- 58:39Speaker 1: actor was good and it wasn't my pitch. But someone's
- 58:42Speaker 1: like for us to really be down on j D
- 58:44Speaker 1: doing this, the coma husband has to speak and has
- 58:48Speaker 1: to be alive in the fantasies, and the fact that
- 58:51Speaker 1: he actually was Jiman and the guy was good, and
- 58:54Speaker 1: that you seemed and you've felt his you know, anguish
- 58:58Speaker 1: and anger made it because I think if that guy
- 59:01Speaker 1: had never spoken and was just a lifeless extra in
- 59:04Speaker 1: a bed, you would have been like, j D should
- 59:06Speaker 1: go for it. Man, That dude has been like that
- 59:08Speaker 1: for a year. But the second he's that was especially
- 59:11Speaker 1: when he hands you a chart, you know, when you
- 59:13Speaker 1: walk in the next day and you're like, you know,
- 59:15Speaker 1: so that you know your conscience is killing you. You know.
- 59:18Speaker 1: To me, that's what made that show work, and it
- 59:20Speaker 1: wasn't wasn't my idea, but we we argued over exactly
- 59:23Speaker 1: what Donald's talking about. Well, it is a real testament
- 59:25Speaker 1: I gonna say, it's a real testament to what you
- 59:28Speaker 1: what you as a writer are saying about j D's character,
- 59:30Speaker 1: because he's got this woman who's being the aggressor on him,
- 59:35Speaker 1: and they've had drinks and and she's like where are
- 59:37Speaker 1: we going? And he's like, I gotta stop this, and
- 59:41Speaker 1: but then he actually goes like, if you really want this,
- 59:45Speaker 1: I'll pick you up and run twelve miles with you
- 59:47Speaker 1: right now. But but I think it'd be best if
- 59:50Speaker 1: you waited, And she's like, I'll call you, and you know,
- 59:53Speaker 1: in his head he's like, fuck absolutely, you know, And
- 59:58Speaker 1: what makes what makes It's such a scrubs moment though,
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: at the end of the blow up, when everybody's feeling
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: down and out about themselves in walks Nurse Roberts and
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: there's something Remember how she used to lean forward when
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: you would do that too. We're gonna go to break.
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: We're gonna go to break. And then we have a
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: caller who's gonna be very excited that Uncle Bill is here.
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: We will be right back after someone talks to you,
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: and we're back, and we're back and we're back. Come.
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: Oh my god, I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry to
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: the nor do you get that all the time? Do
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: you get that all the time? Nor? Hi? How are you? Hi? Okay?
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: Do you get that all the time? Nor? No, no
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: one does that? And the one we're jogging, I have
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: no earbugs left. I don't think I've ever been introduced
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: like this ever in my entire life's ever seen? Have
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: you ever seen? Have you ever seen? Star trek to
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: the Wrath of Cohn. I'm not a starje yes, thank you,
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: thank you, I've got a start. I don't know a
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: star will I'm sorry. I'm sorry, ladies and gentlemen. That
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: was morn North town. Oh god, oh my god, I
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: can't believe this. Nor it's so nice to meet you.
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: Welcome to the program. Oh, we have a very special
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: episode because we have a surprise guest, Bill Lawrence, the
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: creator of the whole darn things here, So you can't
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: ask anything. I have so much to ask you. But
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: before I get into that, I just want to I
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: have been watching you guys for so long. I have
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: I think watched the series start to finish over thirty
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: times U since where two thousand four. That's that's almost
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: that's almost thirty times more than Donald seen him. So um,
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: it's it's my happy place. It's my husband's cheap cord
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: to my mood. So like, if I'm in a bad mood,
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: like you know, I'm on my period, and you know,
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: usually you need to give women chocolate and wine. No,
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: you just need to put on an episode of Straps.
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: And I'm like, I hate it that he has, like
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: he knows this Achilles heel of mine. I hate it
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: so much. But he also uses it that he very
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: much ridiculous. I wish Donald wishes he could put on
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: Scrubs to calm down his wife when she's listen, she
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: don't even have to be on a paier. My wife
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: just don't like me. Man, I'm I'm now, I'm just convinced.
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: She'm guessing today, I'm guessing today hasn't been the best
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: quarantine day the past ever, since school went back, it's
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: been tough. Well, I'm sure there's a lot of I'm
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: sure there's a lot of parents out there that can relate. Donald,
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: who are who can empathize with you? You should know,
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: nor Donald pointed out while you were waiting that my
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: wife is essentially playing herself on the show, so so
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: so for me, I don't think. I don't I don't think.
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: I don't think popping on maybe exacted. Yeah, I don't
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: think popping on an episode, um, well character, and that's
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: how she's in your life. You just hit the jackpot,
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: my friend. You know you would think that. And it's
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: also very very scary. Uh, I mean, you know what,
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: you know what I always think, Bill, I think that,
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: and you've said a version of this, but I think
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: it's kind of I mean, this is maybe stupid to say,
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: but the universe kind of gives you who you need,
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: and you and Donald both have very tough Cristal I'll
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: give it capital t um wives. But they because you
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: guys have big personalities, they keep you in check and
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: sometimes that's very hard. But some wallflower who's gonna let
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: you do whatever you want is not gonna work for
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: for six months with you guys. I thought you were
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: saying that Donald I should be able to trade wives
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: and have it be cool with them. I thought that's
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: where you're going, Well, that's something you guys can work out,
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: because I don't think it would be cool with Christal.
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: I think it'd be cool with Krista, but not for me,
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: just for her. She's so in love with Donald. It's
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: so upsetting. Case it will be all right when a
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: case would be like, well we get a pool, Crystal, Yeah,
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: case you'd be like, case you'd be like, I'll make
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: out a bill for a pool. Listen, I gotta tell
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: you that Kristen. Kristen does this thing that's so awkward
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: where we're we're in front of Bill and we're hugging,
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: and you know, I give a standard hey, good to
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: see you hug and she's like, and Bill standing right
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: there and she's like, m don't, don't, don't, don't let
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: it go. So it's so awkward and she's doing it
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: just to funk with Bill and I'm sitting there with
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: like a red face. Don't okay, Crystal, let go. I
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: don't like it. I don't like it. Nor where are
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: you going from? I'm calling from India, girl friend, all
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: the way from India, baby. This podcast is truly global.
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: Donald did able to get a mug. No, I actually
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: haven't gone around to ordering it yet. Also, stuff is
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: not coming in from the US right now. They're okay
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: whatever to reach us, So I'm just waiting for ship
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: to get up. I have to say. I have to
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: say on the merge front, this is a slight diggression.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: When MacDonald and I started this podcast, Um, the people
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: I heard said to us, and we were Donald and
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: I don't know podcast that much. I've listened to a few.
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: He's listening to none. And we said, um, they said,
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: just you know, podcast listeners really like you know, some
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: basic merch a T shirt or a mug, because you're
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: you're building a community and it's sort of a club
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: and people like that stuff. And so Donald and I said, okay,
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: well we'll make merch. That's cool. You know. We we
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: were never in a rock band. Well, that'll be fun
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: for us. So it's taking a long time to get
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: it up. It's and and uh and on the podcast,
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: we've joked about all these funny merch ideas. We put
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: up a mug and a mask and they were gone
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: within like three hours. And Donald I have now been
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: texting like, we need to take this shilling more seriously
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: because people are not fucking around with fucking merch. They
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: want their merch. Donald, there is a lot you guys
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: can do much twise. And I would just like, if
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: I knew this was going to happen, I'd get like,
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: you know, sha bother faces on it or something printed
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: before like I got on this call, but like you
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: look great. You look right just when I got when
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: I got the meal, and I was like, oh shoot,
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: I need to sound looking like a human being again.
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: Just texted me that, just texted me. It's almost one
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: o'clock at night. Nor just texted me that the only
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: merch she wants is a five six seven eight Bill
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: Lawrence thing, which I think is very nice to have said. Hey,
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: by the way, I promise we promised Nor a coffee
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: mug that she doesn't have to order a coffee mug
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: zact that we're gonna send me stop anybody, if anybody
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: would like a coffee mug. All you gotta do. You
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: don't have to pay for him. All you gotta do
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: what I'm not supposed to know. He's right, listen, if
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: you're from here on out, from here on out, Bill Lawrence.
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: Bill Lawrence brought up a great incentive for making it
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: onto the show. Yeah mug, I think you get a
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: mug da And I'm loving that it's starting with me,
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: So I'm going to be expecting that Joel. I see
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: Joel's signed not forgiving rare mug, but trying, trying, trying
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: to get a mug to India. I see Juell holding
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: your head like, how the funk am I going to
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: India right now? And by the way, by the way,
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: I think it should be a rule, no matter where
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: you're calling from, if you don't get that mug within
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: a week, then you get a second mug. And what wait,
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: I love your name. You know it doesn't work. It's
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: not gonna work with Daniel and freaking Joel and I
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: hold on no, no, no, and then and then used
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: to finish my finished, then finished the mug Zach and
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: then gave you like a five or a six or
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: seven eight mug No no, no, no, no, no, no
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: no no, turn it off. Dan. Right, he thinks he
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: can take control over the show. Dan, I'm going to
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: need the ability. I'm gonna need the ability to be
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: able to mute Bill. Are we sharing your name correct? Nor? Yes,
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: you're saying it all right? Nor? What do you do
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: what she does there? What do you do there in
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: Indian North? She collects mugs from fake doctors. Well that's
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: a bit of a loaded question, but like the short
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: version of that is, I have been a wedding plan
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: of eight years. Uh, and I just recently, as like
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: four weeks ago, stepped out of my company, gave the
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: whole thing to my partner because I am going to
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: be a sustainable farmer. Oh that's oh my god. It's
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: like the documentary did you watch The Biggest Little Farm? Yes?
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: We h So my husband and I have always wanted
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: to retire on a farm and do that whole thing. Uh.
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: And then this, this whole COVID situation has just kind
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: of been like why are we waiting? You know? Good
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: for you? What are you going for you? What are
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: you gonna gonna what are you gonna what? What crop
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: are you going to farm? We're actually going to do
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: uparma culture, which is kind of an ecosystem of like
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: different kinds of things together. Uh. And we're also going
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: to live on on the farm away from the city
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: so that I don't have to deal Um. So yeah, no,
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: nor I missed. I missed. If you said that you've
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: seen this documentary, The Biggest Little Farm, yes we have.
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: I love that documentary so much and if you if
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: you're listening and you haven't seen it, please check it out.
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: It's it's about a couple that that does a version
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: of what Nora is saying, where they create a sustainable farm,
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: and it's so moving and amazing and I really loved it. Yeah,
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: And it was just I think, and my husband and
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: I were in came together with like his family and everything,
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: and we were just and Bombay is a very loud
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: city and during like the whole thing was so quiet
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: and was like we were just like, oh my god,
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: this is amazing. Why don't we have this for our
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: whole lives? And and that's when the conversation started, like
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: you know, you really want to wait ten years and
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: then start and you wanted to do it now, and
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: I was like, why not? Oh well, I wish you
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: the best of luck. That would be so awesome. Bill.
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: Do you think you and Kristen might also start a
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: sustainable farm? Yeah, necessarily think that's in the cards for us.
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: But man, man, man, do I think that's super with
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: the with the sustainable farm, still like a luxury four
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: seasons resort? Is that part of it? Yeah? Bill, you can.
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: You can build a four seasons resort on the farm.
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: That's really cool. That is so cool. Nor, go ahead
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: if you have a question. We were ready to answer,
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: so I have a few, so you can stop me
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: whenever you guys are done answering. Well, the way we
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: get ahead it so I'm gonna start with Bill, just
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: because he's the brains behind the operation. Well, no, thank you,
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: thank you so much for enjoying my podcast. It's really cool.
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: I enjoy your podcast. But think I was talking. I
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: totally I totally imagine that. I totally imagine that in
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: season three of this podcast, Donald, I our guests. You guys, Hey,
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: as long as you guys tell me you can come
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: on whatever you want. Just let me know what's going
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: on what's here? So, so if we were to pick
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: up the show today, um X number of years after
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: it has gone off yet, and we had to pick
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: up from where the boys are today and the whole
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: class is today, But where do you see the show going.
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: Do you think that they'll still be at Sacred Art
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: or do you think that Jade and Turf would go
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: into private practice together? Where do you see like the
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: whole show going? Like, just because there was so much
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: towards the end of season eight, I don't consider season
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: nine in actual season instead whatever whatever that was, there
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: was only one nor. There was only one main difference
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: was recalling a major differences hold up you or both
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: you and Bill were gone, so the magic was gone,
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: the Magic dream Team. I'm answering NER's question because I
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: want to hear Donald Zack's answer to this. So, No,
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: we were talking a lot because everybody always asked Donald
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: Zack and me if we're ever going to reboot the show.
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: And what's really interesting is we've always had opportunities. But
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: everybody on this show a works constantly because they're also
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: super talented and be we see each other on our
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: own because we love each other. So you know, we
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: haven't always been driven to do. Even for me getting
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: to come on this show on Zack and Donald's podcast, Yes,
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: it's theirs. For me, it's such a co opportunity to
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: see two guys I love so Uh. Only recently we've
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: been starting talking about that and thinking about what it
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: would be and with the writers, here's the question for
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: you guys. I think that we think Zach and j
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: D and Turk would always be close, and we think
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: that they would always be of service and that those
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: two were doctors for life. But the one thing that
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: we always got caught up on is when you watch
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: the finale of season eight and Zack's voice j D's
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: voice over says, uh, and who's to say that all
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: these things wouldn't come true just this once? You know?
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: And then as writers we fight. Does that mean that
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: they all came true? Or does that mean that j
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: D is hoping they came true? So that's where we
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: always start. What do you guys think because we always
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: started to go, like we rebooted this, does that mean
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: that j D and Donald's kids ultimately are going to
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: end up together and married like they do in the show.
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: Does that mean that those things actually happened, you know,
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: you know, so uh so I would because to me,
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: that's the trap. Do you think, Zach, do you think
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: that those things that we were showing in the finale
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: were real? Or do you think they were your dreams? Um,
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: that's a question I never been asked, and I'm semi
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: embarrassed to admit that it gave me goose bumps on
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: my arm. But I don't hold anything back from your listeners. Um,
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: I've never been asked that question, Bill, and it's a
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: great question. And I as as as as you were
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: talking about it, I kind of answered it automatically and said, no,
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: that was j D's fantasy of how great life could be.
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: And then I started thinking, and then I started thinking, like,
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: if you brought it back, it might be interesting to
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: show that things had not gone that way at all.
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: And in fact, he's um, they they've all been separated,
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: and they were you know, you know, on this podcast
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: a lot we talked about how we're all living life
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: and and COVID aside happy people and doing the best
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: that we can, but we always talked about how we
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: missed the community of this wonderful thing that happened to us.
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: For nearly a decade, and it made me think that
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: it might be interesting that the characters aren't together. They
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: don't have that special bond and there is some reason
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: that has to bring them together, and and and joy
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: and and community come out of bringing them back together.
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: It's always what's messed us up? Broke? You go, Donald,
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: I I agree with you, Zach. I think I think
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: you're right. I think I think that's a better story.
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: Jony Loves Chachi didn't go that long, you know what
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: I mean? That happy ending of of the kids being
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: the next generation of Turk and j D. But it's
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: a love it's the love story that you know, Turke
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: and j D's love story is a great love story,
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: but this is the actual love story where you know
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: their children are together. I think that's too happy. And
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: where do they fucking hate each other? That would be fine,
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: I think, I know. See. No, that's the problem is
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: that I feel like, you know, people wanted when j
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: D says, who's to say my fantasies couldn't come true? Justice?
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: Once that, you want to believe that next Christmas they
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: were all together, you know, and that they stayed friends.
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: And I think people would be really not happy in
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: a in a bad way. If we came up on
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: a world that they were no longer in each other's lives.
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: So I think that's the immediately, let me clarify what
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: I meant. Then I'm saying j D and Turk are
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: still tight, their kids just don't get along. You know
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: what I mean? Well, I was, I was saying that
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: we can be tight but separated, you know. Um, And
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: I think, Bill, you know this, Bill, you know this
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: better than anything. The audience will often say something two
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: things at once. I remember when I when we screen
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: tested Garden State. They were at the very end. We
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: had a focus group about twenty people. No you weren't
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: at this one, and they said, uh um, they said,
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: how many of you this is random strangers? And they said,
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: how many of you feel like the ending was a
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: little to pat? You know, the two lovers get together
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: in the airport. And I would say like seventy five
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: percent of the hands went up and they said, okay, um, honn,
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: how many of you want them to be together? Every
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: single hand went up. So as the writer, you're trying
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: and writer director, you're trying to balance, like you obviously
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: you want to you want to make the audience happy,
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: but you you also want to subvert what they think
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: they want a little bit, you know what I mean? Bill,
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: you can speak to that because this, well, look, I'm
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: as proud of the writing and directing I did on
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: Garden State as I am of my podcast. Do you
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: want to know? I want to know. I want to know.
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: There another funny story, just just while I'm on the subject.
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: So this is the this is the story that's a
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: total tangent. But in that same test screening, Now, when
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: when you when you test screen a movie in your director,
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: you have to go because you have to see where
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: the audience is laughing, where they're board all everything like that. Now,
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: you would never invite an actor who's in the movie
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: to the test screen because there's gonna be a focus
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: group aft and you never know what they're gonna say.
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: They might say they don't like that actor. You would
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: never subject an actor to that. But as a reading director,
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: you have to be there. So there's a focus group
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: in the front row of the movie theater, twenty people
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: lined up. I'm six rows back with my baseball hat down.
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: I don't want to spoil the sampling and have them
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: know that I'm there, and a girl raises her hand
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: and the moderator calls on on her and she goes, look,
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: kudos to Zach Braff for pulling this off. I just
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: don't find him attractive. And I'm sitting there. I'm sitting
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: there like fighting my fist, like this is the most
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: all the producers were in the in the road with me.
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: They all look over at me like, oh, ship, how
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: did that feel? And I'm like, not great. I'm gonna
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: that that right there is a hater, that's all that is. Look. Look,
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: she started the ship off with kudos to Zach Braff
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: pulling this off, meaning this ship is fired, dude, this
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: ship is fire. But he's an ugly dude. Bullshit, dude.
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: You know what's funny though, this is I'm just thinking
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: this out loud in real time. But this is before
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: like social media went crazy, and this was sort of
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: a live anonymous troll because she doesn't know I'm in
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: the room and she's anonymously trooling me to the moderator.
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: But I have to be there because I'm the director
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: of the fucking movie. Whatever, how do you guys fix
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: that in the movie? How do you fix it? There's
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: got more questions. First of all, I want to say,
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: you're such a fucking dick egg and be and be.
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: We spent a hundred graund and lessened my nose. We
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: brought my We brought my nose. I thought it was
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: the green screen mat. Yeah, we we we we We
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: shot some angle is where my nose looks too big
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: and we wanted to please that one fucking woman. All right, sorry, no, no,
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: I'm sorry, no problem, okay, Zach. My next question is
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: for you, um finally, So you've done a lot of
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: like platfalls and and a lot of like funny falls
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: throughout the lnge time of the show. Which is your
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: favorite to shoot and which is the one that you
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: thought came out best on screen? That's a good qument,
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: that's a good question. I'm gonna cheat a little nore
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: um okay. And and I mean, can I can the
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: scooter one on the Wizard of Oz? Count Bill, I'll
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: let you judge. Yes, yes, just just don't say the
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: string line one where you end up in the garbage stuff.
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: You've said it like two many times on this podcast.
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: You know why nor because that I don't know if
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: you know this, but Zack directed that one do you
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: know this you don't even want to podcast religiously? And Nor,
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: Oh my god, Nor, you're very funny, first of all,
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: and I love the fact that you're you're such an
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: avid listener that you're like, please don't say the one
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: where you zip line because I've heard it not But
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: I mean, we're gonna be so funny when we get
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: deeper into this this series, because we're only on season
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: two and she's one point five and people are already like,
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: please don't tell that story. I can't wait for that
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: episode anyway. Anyway, Nor, I do love that episode. But
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: I have to say the funniest it's technically not a pratfall,
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: I guess, but probably the funniest in Scrubs history. It's
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: what Bill always called our most expensive joke in the
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: history of Scrubs is when the scooter goes into the
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: endless puddle in the Wizard of Oz episode, where where
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: I clearly run into Julian the underground manateee who doesn't
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: exchange pleasantries um because um it involved digging two very
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: deep holes. They were very expensive to build because the
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: city demanded they'd be built to code for safety. Because
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: you can't just throw people in a hole that could collapse.
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: And uh. And as a director of the episode, Uh,
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: we came up with the idea that it would be
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: a wonner, which means we did this elaborate thing where
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: the stunt man is riding the scooter with his with
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: his helmet on into the first puddle. Um, the camera
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: keeps panning. They weren't really connected underground obviously, but it
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: compands to the second pile where I was hiding out underwater.
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: Um and and and and then one of the one
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: of the crew members, with a hammer as hard as
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: he could, banged on the asphalt so I could hear
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: it underground, which meant to pop up um because the
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: camera was on me. And Uh. It was very elaborate,
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: and I still think one of the funniest gags we
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: did on Scrubs. Bill, you might want to talk about it.
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: That is so funny though, because Manatee seemed like the
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: happiest creatures in the the fact that the fact that
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: he wouldn't return pleasant tries, is it what a bit funnier?
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: He was rude? Wait, but Bill, talk about that from
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: the writer's room, because there's no way when you guys
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: thought of that, you could have possibly thought it was
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: going to come out as funny as it did, because
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: I think when we thought of it, the most fun
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: was Randall Winston, who's been on the show and is
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: you know, it's the closest thing I have to a
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: life partner besides my wife. He is the line producer
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: in charge of the budget. And he came to us
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: with the first estimates of how much cost Yes, yes,
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: look at you and uh he uh came to us
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: the first estimates of how much that joke cost, and
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: he said he said it to me in a way
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: that he obviously felt so unfortunately we won't do it.
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: And in my head I was like, yeah, it feels
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: like we should still go for it. And that was
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: only that was only a product of youth, because now
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: I think I would look at it and go, oh man,
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: we could have I guess, I don't know, purchased a
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: small home to give to somebody to live in for
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: the price of a joke, you know, But that's that's
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: movie and TV production, is Zack. I want to give
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: you props because Nora asked one of my favorite falls
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: of all time. I randomly saw it when I was
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: searching for this episode. Do you remember what you did
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: when you were singing a song you made up, going
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: I'm feeling so good today. You know at that they'll
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: feel good, but nobody it's all so My favorite is
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: that Zack decided to click his heels and because that's
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: very hard to do, and then fall flat on his
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: face and get back up. And I've never seen that
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: was in a wonder as well, and it looks so
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: incredibly painful and it's so well done. I would vote
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: for that as well. I want you listeners to know
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: that I will do I would do anything to make
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: you guys laugh. I still go to the chiropractor as
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: often as I can, just because of all those years.
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: Thank you, so I I do it all for my fans.
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: Nor you gotta bring you gotta bring a question Donald's way.
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: Now I'm gonna be honest with you. My favorite pratfall
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: is the one from the episode that Zack directed. I
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: hate to take because of what the dude does. It's
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: a stunt man that does it, but after he hits
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: the wall and how he shakes like a fish in
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: the air is one of the funniest things I've ever
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: I remember when he did it and laughed. I was
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: there the night that happened, and I remember laughing when
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: it happened, and then seeing it on camera and laughing
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: it again at it again. So that's that directed that,
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: by the way, I do have to simultaneously give a
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: shout out to to the many stuff man that that
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: the several stuff man that did it over the years,
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: because there were certain things I I definitely couldn't do
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: or wasn't allowed to do, and um, and these guys
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: were hilarious and Donald Donald was right. I was not
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: allowed to zip line into the wall and line but
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: you didn't zip line into zip line. I wasn't allowed
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: to nail the wall. What you also weren't allowed to
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: drive an actual scooter that had to be weighted down
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: with lead so that you would stay underwater in the
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: first puddle while we went over to the next puddle
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: and you came up. Think about that that stuntman had
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: to hold his breath for the whole shot, for that
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: whole shot, Yeah, because he had to go under with
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: the scooter and stay under No, well, technically, Bill, we
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: panned off of him and then he could, yeah, but
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: not right away. Zach, not right away. But I have
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: to say not to toot my own director horn, but
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: how many directors are directing from underwater in a puddle
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: where you can only here with a hammer on asphalts?
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: All right, all right, nor um um, sure we have another?
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: Should we give her one more? I have what I
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: have one more question? This one is predominant because I've
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: always wondered this at what, like I said of wort
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: Up so many times, and I wanted to get perspective
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: on this. Do you wish that your character had a
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: longer run as a single on the show instead of
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: getting into a committed relationship right off the Yes, yes, yes, yes,
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: for you so much. Yes, um, you know I love
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: I love that Donald has tiptoed around it. And Nora
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: is just like, come on, buddy, be on, come on.
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: Is a beautiful woman. And the connection that she and
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: I have, the chemistry that she and I have is
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: by far the best chemistry I've ever had with any
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: female on on screen, by far. I can, I can
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: go down the list, and nobody has ever been on
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: the level that Judy and I were on Uh, Comma, comma, comma.
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: I do, however, wish that Turk was a single for
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: a little bit by the one and to at least
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: season one and two, it was a proct No, I
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: believe it was a product of youth. And I'll say
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: all the same caveats because Judy is so good on
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: the show and so funny and talented. But I remember,
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: and I might be making this up in my head,
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: but I remember as writers telling Judy early on that
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: Turk and Carla we're gonna be together for the run
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: of the show, and her being like, Oh, that's gonna
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: be cool to have a steady relationship, to be the
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: ones that ground it, to explore what that means, to meet,
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: get married, stay together, have children, to follow that whole arc.
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: And Donald, who was a young man at the time,
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: I do remember kind of telling you that and you're
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: being like, h really, as Amy Smart walks by, like morning,
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: Donald was funny? Um? All right? Now, Now, now you
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: know we have this new segment, since you're an avid
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: fan of the podcast, where uh and Bill is going
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: to join us for the first time for a new
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: segment called fix your Life. Nor It's time to fix
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: your life? All right? Nor? How can we fix your life? Bigger? Small?
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: We're gonna do it right now. You don't need to
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: pay for a therapist. You don't need to pay for
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: a handy man. We got it. Okay. My cat utterly
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: scratches me a lot for no reason, especially at night,
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: especial if I haven't fall asleep by his bedtime. How
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: they get him stop doing that? Okay, I can tell
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: you this one real quick. All right, this is this
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: is this is been a great episode to fix your life.
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: You're welcome. Nor as someone is not a cat person
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: and it's allergic to cats, just get rid of the
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: cat u Nor. I don't know too much about cats.
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: I gotta be honest. I'm more of a dog person,
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: and i've I've I've raised a couple of puppies now,
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: so I have some experience with puppies. I do know.
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: Have you tried now with with puppies. There's a canned
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: air thing that they hate. If you do that canned
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: air noise, They're like, I will never do what you
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: what I just did again if you just promise not
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: to make that can so I would try canned air.
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: Another thing is a water gun. Um you can sometimes
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: I don't. Most most pets do not like getting blasted
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: with the water gun to the face. Also, there's uh,
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: I mean, we've we've made jokes about everything on Scrubs,
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: but there's also this one episode that we did in
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: which Zach goes down a zip line and I think
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: he directed that one. That because now I'm going to
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: be really in my head about about mentioning that episode.
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: I mean, I love it, I love it. My only
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: thing is that I just didn't want you to say
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: that that was your best. Okay, yeah, exactly. I truly
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: believe that if you want to make it so the
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: cat stop scratching you, you gotta get rid of that cat.
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: Donald is joking on behalf of pet lovers everywhere. You're
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: gonna keep that cat, and you're going to tame him.
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: You're going to tame him and yeah, he's awesome. So
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: trying try the pet corrector and or a water gun
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: and uh, And I guarantee you that we have just
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: fixed your life. You're welcome. You're welcome, alright. Nor, it's
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: been an extraordinarily long segment because you've been so darn charming.
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: We thank you so much for coming on the show.
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: Nor come back and report on your life. I think
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: what you're doing is so cool and interesting and um,
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: I bet you these guys would love to hear it.
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: And if you do, it is free mugs for your
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: whole family. And oh my god, I have fifty nine
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: people in my family. Just I understand. I understand Nor Nor.
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: In a year and a half, when the mug that
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: Joel is gonna put in the mail tomorrow, I hope
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: you enjoying your mug. Zac. That mug is gonna arrive
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: with like seventeen thousand absentee ballots in one year from now.
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: Because it's a little true, all right. I just want
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: to say, do you want to thank you so much?
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: If there was no COVID, I would can see you
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: on the mouth because I love you so much making
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: this happened. I got you well getting propositioned. Thank you,
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: Thank you. I ain't gonna I love you guys so much,
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: and give it up for North. What a great movie.
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: By the way, that's the that's the best. Uh. That
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: is the best guest, at least in the ones I've
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: been on here for that I gotten to be a
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: part of. They're all so awesome that she was amazing
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: by the way she she not only was she just fun.
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: But she knew the show so well that she was
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: like she was like saying, please don't reference that episode
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: yet again, which which episode, you guys. It was a
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: very special episode for me because I don't know if
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: you know this, but it was the first time I
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: got to direct. Um. All right, um, hey, Bill, I
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: know that you don't control the movement of the background.
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: That's up to the assistant directors. But I just wanted
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: you to know that in serving as the pharmacists, he's
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: the he's behind the pharmacists counter being the pharmacist. And
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: I don't recall hearing the Beard was the pharmacist. No, no, no,
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: we did. We did. I mean we cut it, but
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: we did some things that he had to cover for
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: the pharmacist. We didn't that Just the one that made
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: me the saddest was I think I went back and
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: watched some guy mopping the air because of you guys,
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: really upset man. And also Bill beard Fusse was also
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: a patient. Reason like Beard Fusse was like the go
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: to for the E d s to be like, uh,
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: it's funny that the guy was a patient Beard Fas say,
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: And now I I was drawn to the background going, Hey,
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: Jeff Stevenson is not the pharmacists guys. Okay, he's Dr
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: beard Face. And as you know, by the way, didn't
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: ever did anybody did give you pause that his name
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: was beard to say, which he's a smart guy, he
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: would read it his beard face, and yet he still
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: chose to have such a big beard. I just think, well,
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: you're gonna shave it after you gave him a character. Dude,
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: you're if in real life your name was beard Face,
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: I would think that you would be very careful about
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: not having a beard. That's what always confused me about
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: that character. Um, I have to say one of the
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: hardest I've left in a couple episodes. I don't know
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: if I'm just giddy tonight or what, but when Ralphie
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: pukes in the elevator on Kelso and all you hear
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: is Kelso coo, good god, the oh you want to know?
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: You want to know a joke piece of trivia, This
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: will so And it's the last little show reference I
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: had other than I thought you. By the way, we
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: always give props to Sarah was great in this, Judy,
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: Johnny C. Christop, but I really did think Donald Zack
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: was fun to come on here for this one, because
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: you Tube both slayed it comedically in this episode. I
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: really thought so. Um and since I still since I
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: need your approval no matter how old I get. UM,
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: that means a lot to me. I mean, it's sincerely.
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: You guys were both funny as as all get out. Uh,
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: the last bit of trivias. So comedy writers always get
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: stuck when they think they're stealing jokes from from themselves
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: or jokes that they've written before. And there was one
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: um in this show that because or a rowdy exists
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: because I saw somebody had a dead stuffed dog when
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: I was younger. I had also written about a dead
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: animal joke on Spin City, which was Richard Kind's character says,
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: because they're going to a morgue to try and get
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: a dead cat because for some weird episode and he
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: he he says, Uh, turns out, um, you know it's weird.
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: I went there and we got it. We put in
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: the car and sneeze. It all turns out I'm not
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: allergic to dead cats. And then Mike Fox says, well,
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: the Mike Fox says, well, then you should definitely get one,
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: and uh, and then on this show we then decided
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: we thought about it for a long time. That Amy Smart,
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: do you know the joke I'm talking about Zack that?
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: She says, Perhaps you remember I came finished the story.
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: The joke doesn't get paid off because Casey's there, forget it.
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: Casey carbs in the building the joke, and this one
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: is Amy Smart says, perhaps he smells my dead dog.
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: So we're also living in a word. You're back, bring
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: it back. I care more about cut that out, cut
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: that out. Thunder supplause, Dan thundersupplause, Ladies and gentlemen. I
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: want you to finally meet the Casey com right. Hi guys, Hi, Hi,
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: case is so good to see you. My wife's gonna
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: be so jealous. I gets say hi do you and
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: she didn't? Oh my god, please give her a big hug.
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: Will I will? This is what a mom slash housekeeper
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: slash teacher slash everything looks like? We are you? You
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: look stunning? Are you? Are you? Are you happy that
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: school started? Or is it more and more and more
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: and more and more work. I'm happy it started because
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: the kids are excited to see their friends and their
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: new teachers. But I mean, I just came up here
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: to pee, and this is the first time I've pissed since.
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: And I have my pajamas on, and Bell was saying
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: we should wife swap. Oh my god, what if Krista
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: could come into this house and and set this one straight? Does?
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: Donald said he was the first we've had. Donald said,
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: you're gonna make the decision based on having a pool
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: over here. He's like, she's gonna be like, there's a
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: pool over there. I've hit over for a few days.
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: They'll never get rid of me. I will do anything. WHOA, Alright, well,
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: this is what a joke to you by my Lanta.
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: All Right, I just wanted to say, hi, I'm being summoned.
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: I'm sure, Okay, we love you. We love you. So
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: nice to finally see you, guys. I know I'm excited.
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: I think she probably gets listen to the podcast. Ever
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: I listened. I listened because you know what, Donald likes
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: to listen to it and make his edits on the
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: loudest volume possible in room of the house where we're
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: all sitting. Week casey. I don't listen to it all
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: the time either, but I'm gonna listen to the this
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: section of this one over and over and over. I
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: think it's good that you. I think it's good that
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: you specified that's Joel and that's Daniel, because um, we're
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: almost She had no idea what their names were. That's
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: why I said that because she does not watch, she
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: does not listen to the podcast, and she has not
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: ever seen an episode of Scrubs. I played an episode
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: of Scrubs once for her and she got teary eyed
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: at the end. She was like, Scrubs is like this.
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: If I would have known this, I would have been
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: watching all these years. Oh my god. Um. I wanted
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: to say that I really related to the idea of
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: the end monologue in this, about the idea of feeling
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: alone even at times when there's a ton of people around.
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: I thought that was a moving bill, and I think
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: that there's a lot of people who can who are listening,
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: who can probably relate to that. Sometimes you're surrounded by
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: people and you still feel super alone and and and lonesome,
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: and you're like, what's wrong with me? And and I
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: think you articulated well, especially with the the visual effect,
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: just sort of a call back to the pilot um
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: that Adam Bernstein directed as well, with people moving all
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: around j D and he's just they're feeling so lonesome,
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: and um, I just thought, I don't know it, just
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: thought it struck me this time is as an emotion
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: and a feeling that a lot of people can probably
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: relate to and think that they were the only one
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: feeling it. Well, look, man, you you hit on two things.
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: One is always I'm glad you gave a shout out
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: to Adam Bernstein because he helped create the look of
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: the show, and he intentionally wanted to do a throwback
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: to the pilot where where the pilot you were overwhelmed
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: and off on your own and the world was zipping
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: around around you, and this one you're lonely even though
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: you're comfortable in that world and all those people are
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: around you, and he intentionally pitched that to do it,
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: you know, kind of the same thing twice in a
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: way that I thought was really cool. But more I
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: was struck by the emotion of this episode, not in
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: terms of being a couple, but in terms of we
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: often talk about in the world right now, but you know,
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: empathy is a big thing, okay, And one of the
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: things that comedy writers will often talk about is joking around.
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: We call it don't know how good you got it disease,
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: you know, which is Hey, if you have a job,
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: every job, even being a comedy writer, which is ultimately
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: the greatest gig in the world and I would do
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: it for free. Um, you still sometimes have crazy hours
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: and tough situations, and you'll find yourself with your co
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: workers complaining and saying like, oh, this part of this
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: job sucks, this part's annoying, this part sucks. But then
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: you don't ever take a moment to go holy crap,
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: especially right now. There's a lot of comedy writers that
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: we get to keep working, you know what I mean,
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: because we're writing shows and trying to get ready in
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: case the world ever opens up again, and you don't
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: always take the time to be empathetic towards the people
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: that don't have it as good as you, you know,
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: And that's not only true when it comes to having
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: found the person you're meant to be with, but right
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: now in the world, man, I don't know why this
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: episode touched me so much. I feel like if people
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: could be a little more empathetic as to what other
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: folks are going through out there, that things would be
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: just a lot clearer and a lot more simple, you know,
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: And uh, that's why I don't. I rarely get choked
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: up at these episodes, but I got choked up at
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: this one because you know, what I was hearing j
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: D say was you fuckers are so caught up in
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: your own pettiness right now. You're not really thinking about
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: how hard it is for other people. And you guys
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: do that all the time on this show and empathize
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: and think about what's going on with them. So it
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: really touched me. Yeah, and I just want to see.
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: The last thing is that, you know, I think this
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: is one of the only times I explained spiking the
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: lens to UM to the audience about how you know,
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: it's usually unless it's done on purpose, like Ferris Bueller's
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: Day Off where the characters talking to you, it's usually
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: something that's edited around because you know, we say there's
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: this invisible fourth wall that's the camera, and we don't
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: we we don't look into the lens because that's the
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: invisible fourth wall. Um. This, I believe is one of
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: the only times where you put me looking directly at
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: the audience. And I remember shooting this. I was I
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: watched it, and I remember, like, you know, we did
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: a bunch of takes where I didn't look I just
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: kind of looked off sad, and then I think I
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: said to Adam, like, let me just do one just
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: for the funk of it, where I just looked directly
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: in the lens, And I was so happy you chose it, Bill,
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: because I it almost felt to me like at this
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: point in the run of the show, at to eighteen
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: of the show, it almost I don't know, I'm maybe
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: I'm reading too much into it, but my interpretation was like,
- 1:44:56Speaker 1: I'm checking in with you, the audience. I've been telling
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: you this story for a season and eight plus eighteen episodes,
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: and I'm really fucking lonesome right now, and I'm doing
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: the best that I can. I can't do this all
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: on my own, quote unquote, but I'm I'm I'm looking
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: at you. I don't know, and you never did it.
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: I don't think we ever again. But I thought it
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: was very I thought it was very moving, and it's
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: me so it's bizarre, but I but I was a
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: bit caught off guard by because it's not a technique
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: you ever did again. We ever did again. No, it
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: was supposed to be you're all like me, because I
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: think the world is filled of I think it's very
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: hard to be a single person, uh, and around married
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: couples and happy couples that are bitching and moaning about
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: whatever trivial thing is making their great couple nous hard,
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: you know what I mean. And so it was definitely
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: an effort to say you're all. The other time we
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: did it, you guys might not remember, is the dumbest
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: joke ever, because we talked about spiking the lens. Was
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: we did an episode in which you said, it doesn't
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: really matter ter what you think. I'm really interested in
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: what America and you look directly at the cat camera,
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: and then we revealed a tailor on the other side
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: at the time guy that says it's not America, that's America. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: but yes, you are correct. By the way, it's funny
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: that um Donald and I always referenced Beverly Hills Cop
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: and uh, there's a there's a handful of times when
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: any Murphy looks directly in the lens, like are you
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: seeing this ship? And I think that in Beverly Hills
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: cop trading places. Yeah, I'd about to say it's not
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: Beverly Hills Cop is creating places. When the Mortimers say
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: to him, uh, it's pork bellies, which is used to
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: make bacon, which you might find in a bacon, lettuce
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: and tomato sandwich. Looked camel like. He looks like, what
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: doesn't he do it in Beverly Hills Cop or no, no, no, no.
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: Beverly Hills Cop is very much straight. He never breaks
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: the the fourth wall. In My favorite thing in the
- 1:47:04Speaker 1: world is in whenever you see a show or a
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: movie that has a kid that is six or under,
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: you just should go back and watch the scene to
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: see how many times they stare directly at the cameras
- 1:47:15Speaker 1: they can't. Oh man. Ralphie at one point says the
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: line that Cox is saying. He's saying it at the
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: exact same day he's mouthing the lines when you see
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: when you reveal him, it's it's yeah, it's you, Yeah,
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: it's kids. In fact, someone told me, someone wrote on
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: my social media. They wrote, Zack, ever since you've you
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: you describe spiking the lens to me, you've ruined the
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: Grassy High for me, Because they said the teen extras
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: are the team background performers are doing it nonstyle. You know,
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: you want to see something really funny. One of the
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: biggest stars in the world right now is Will Smith.
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: Right watch the first season of The Fresh Prince of
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: bel Air. He's mouthing everyone's lines. See him doing it.
- 1:47:59Speaker 1: You see him saying everyone's lines while they're making the show.
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: So you know, and if you go back and watch that,
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: see if you can find Christa Miller playing a girl
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: that Will Smith hits on and dances with. I can't wait.
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: I'm going to look for that right now, as soon
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: as as soon as this episode is done, I'm going
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: to look and see when Will Smith a lot of things.
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: I think it is done. Donald, we we've done it.
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: We've we've we've celebrated this really good episode. And I'm
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: so glad you were here, Bill, because um, it wasn't
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: just your average episode. It was a particularly good one.
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: I think, Well, it means a lot to me to
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: see YouTube, but to see Daniel and Joel, who I
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: come to enjoy spending time with, and I make all
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: my stupid jokes because I wish that this was my podcast,
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: because I enjoy it and I listened to it. My
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: giant earphones at night every Tuesday and Thursday when it
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: comes out. That's my going to bed thing. I miss
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: you both. I love seeing Casey, I love seeing you
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: for um. I really appreciate getting to be involved in
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: this occasional I guess well. We love you, we love you,
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: and we love all of you. Thank you so much
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: for for continuing to tune in, for those of you
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: who were so interested in the merch and are are
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: pitching the funniest fucking ideas for merch I've ever seen.
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: We will, we will get to it. Donald and I
- 1:49:18Speaker 1: are going to dedicate more bandwidth two putting up merch
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: now that we know. I'm gonna be honest with you.
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: I don't think that I can get I don't think
- 1:49:26Speaker 1: we can get I doc leo on a shirt that's no.
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: But but wait wait, but if you if you love
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: the five six seven eight Bill Lawrence thing, I want
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: you to tweet Zach Zael, not Daniel, Donald, not me.
- 1:49:42Speaker 1: Just tweet Zach that you want to and he's gonna
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: need to hear it a lot for him. You know
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: what I'm gonna you know what I'm gonna make. I'm
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: gonna make a T shirt with Bill's face giant on it,
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: and it's just gonna say five eight across the topic.
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: Already got some of those. If anybody wants one, make them,
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: make them in my Bill's bills, made some at home. Wait,
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: there was something I wanted to say. You just reminded
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: me of Oh this girl on my Twitter she wrote
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: the show, but she sent me the funniest picture Donald.
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: It's it's Leo standing on a dock. Um, and it's um.
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: I think it's from Great Gatsby And he's at the
- 1:50:20Speaker 1: end of his dock, and there's a little rowboat and
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: and the and this woman or young woman wrote, Um,
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: I wish I was good at photoshop because I would
- 1:50:28Speaker 1: put Donald in the rowboat because then you can be
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: talking Leo things that will never make it to a shirt. Well,
- 1:50:43Speaker 1: if if you're if you're at home, you can make
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: your own Donald Docking Leo shirt. Thank you for tuning in.
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: We really appreciate you. And hey, Bill, why don't we
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: go out with another Charlotte Lawrence song? What's what's your
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: favorite song? That's not the one we uh we played
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: since we're limited, but we can celebrate your beautiful honor. Well, okay,
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: one of the cool things that UH were Atlantic is
- 1:51:03Speaker 1: doing is that they released a children's album. My daughter
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: did a song called Lavender's Blue on their UM. It's
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: a bunch of huge recording artists that you will know
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: doing kids songs. It's UH at home with the kids,
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: UH and all the proceeds, one of the proceeds go
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: to Save the Children, which is doing amazing work in
- 1:51:23Speaker 1: a hundred different countries. So this will be a little
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: kid's well bye. But it's called Lavender's Blue by Charlotte Lawrence.
