Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to Radioized Children's Story Hour. It's a

REMINDERI is a reading service intended for people who are
• 0:09
blinder of other disabilities that make it difficult to read
• 0:12
PRIMM material. Today we will be reading from various books
• 0:16
on airports and airplanes. Your reader today is Diane. We
• 0:21
will continue with the book The Airport The Inside Story.
• 0:27
It was published by Saint Martin's Press. It has a
• 0:30
copyright ear of twenty twenty three and the author is
• 0:34
John Walton. Preparing for takeoff, lots of different people have
• 0:40
important jobs to do before an airplane is ready to
• 0:43
take to the sky. For safety, passengers normally get on
• 0:47
and off the plane on its left hand site. All
• 0:50
the jobs, such as catering, refueling, and baggage loading usually
• 0:54
happen on the right hand site. Food delivery Tim drives
• 1:00
a truck called a scissor lift that carries all the
• 1:02
metal carts prepared by the catering team. Jada rows every
• 1:08
cart straight into the airplane. Refueling airplanes use special fuel
• 1:14
called kerosene. Sometimes this is made from plants. To refuel
• 1:19
the plane, Nor connects her fuel pumper truck to the
• 1:23
underground system and to the wing of the plane. Loading luggage.
• 1:28
On some planes, luggage is loaded bag by bag into
• 1:31
the hold. Sarah sends the luggage up a conveyor belt
• 1:35
to Bob, who's waiting inside the plane ramp. Supervisor Kay
• 1:40
make sure the airplane is ready to go and that
• 1:42
everyone has performed their jobs. Baggage handlers Sarah and Richard
• 1:47
drive luggage from the terminal to the plane and make
• 1:50
sure it gets on board. Catering staff Tim and Jada
• 1:54
work for the catering company, which makes all the food
• 1:58
that passengers and crews eat on boards in the belly
• 2:05
of the plane. Everything that an airplane carries is in
• 2:09
its package hold is called the cargo. This includes suitcases,
• 2:13
life saving medicine, and even fresh fish. On big planes,
• 2:17
luggage is loaded into specially shaped metal containers that fit
• 2:21
inside the curved body of the air craft. Some other
• 2:24
cargo goes in these containers too, while some is loaded
• 2:28
into flat paletts. Does someone order sushi? Roger and his
• 2:33
team are handling a big shipment of fresh fish. Roger
• 2:37
is a loadmaster, and he is responsible for making sure
• 2:40
everything is loaded in the right order and safely secured
• 2:44
in the hold. One of the team. My mood checks
• 2:49
his table to see which pallette to load next before
• 2:52
arriving here. At the loading dock, the fish was put
• 2:55
into containers and large in a large warehouse at the airport.
• 2:59
A refree frigated room kept the fish. Cod weird and
• 3:04
wonderful cargo. Airplanes can transport all kinds of special cargo
• 3:09
in the hold. Have you ever wondered what might be
• 3:12
underneath your seat while you doze off to sleep up
• 3:15
in the cabin flying animals. If you think it's only
• 3:19
people that fly around the world, think again. Some animals
• 3:22
have busy schedules too. Race horses need to travel to
• 3:26
international races, while animals such as pandas are phone to
• 3:30
zoos in different countries. Medicines, foxing, and other medicines can
• 3:35
be flown from where they are made to where they
• 3:37
are needed. They often have to be kept in refrigerated
• 3:40
containers open wide. Some planes are specially made to carry cargo.
• 3:46
A few of these special planes even have noses to
• 3:49
lift up to allow the cargo on board. It almost
• 3:52
looks like the plane is smiling fresh food. Have you
• 3:57
ever wondered how bananas, mangoes, and other truck fruit can
• 4:00
be bought in shops across the globe All year round.
• 4:04
Fresh fruit and vegetables are flown to international destinations daily.
• 4:09
Flashy cars, sports cars, or luxury luxury vehicles can be
• 4:14
delivered from the factory to their new owners by plane.
• 4:17
They're carefully loaded on board using special equipment. Wildlife at
• 4:22
the airport. Felix the falcon swoops around the airport chasing
• 4:28
away geese. He has a very important job making sure
• 4:31
that birds don't fly too close to airplanes. His trainer, Mina,
• 4:36
wears a special leather gloff for him to land on,
• 4:38
and she gives them a treat. Good job, Felix. All
• 4:42
that training paid off. While Mina deals with the birds,
• 4:45
Ken is busy taking care of bigger wildlife today too.
• 4:49
Deer are getting too close to the fence that surrounds
• 4:52
the airport. For everyone's safety, they shouldn't be here. Ken
• 4:56
drives his truck up to them and turns on the speakers.
• 5:01
He plays the recording of a dear danger call, and
• 5:03
the deer run back to the forest. They might visit
• 5:06
the airport again, but Ken will be ready. Is that
• 5:10
  a bird isn't a plane, No, it's a drone. Sometimes
• 5:13
the falcons like Felix aren't available. Airports use drones to
• 5:18
buzz around and scare off birds. Airplanes are the only
• 5:21
things with wings allowed at the airport. If birds fly
• 5:24
into an airplane or its engines, they could cause an accident,
• 5:28
so it's always better to be on the safe side.
• 5:32
Firefighters at the ready. Did you know that every airport
• 5:36
has a fire station. Although accidents and fires are very rare,
• 5:40
firefighters need to be ready for every emergency. Limb is
• 5:44
the fire Cheap and he is supervising firefighters Judith and
• 5:48
Cawlu as they check that all the hoses, fire engines,
• 5:53
and other equipment are ready for whatever may come their way.
• 5:56
Firefighters at the airport use special fire engines that can
• 6:00
go off road if needed. That's so that they can
• 6:03
drive over the grassy areas around runways in case an
• 6:07
airplanes gets off while taking off or landing. The fire
• 6:10
engines that Judith and Klou drive have big nozzles on
• 6:14
the front that can spray foam or water, depending on
• 6:17
what's needed to fight the fire. Occasionally, when they have
• 6:21
some downtime, firefighters spray water in a big arch to
• 6:24
welcome new planes to the airport. Firefighters train regularly to
• 6:29
put out fires as quickly and as safely as possible. Today,
• 6:33
Judith and Kallalou are performing a routine fire drill. They
• 6:37
are using training equipment that includes something that looks like
• 6:40
an airplane but isn't. This fake airplane is called a
• 6:44
fire training rig is used by firefighters to learn how
• 6:47
to put out an aircraft fire. Limb shows Kalalou and
• 6:51
Judith where to aim lower Kalallou by the engine, pilots
• 6:58
and flight attendants. Every airplane has at least two pilots
• 7:02
and a team of flight attendants who make up its crew.
• 7:06
They work together to fly the plane and look after
• 7:09
the passengers. Make sure to greet them when you board
• 7:12
the plane. Pre flight prep before every flight, the crew
• 7:16
have a meaning to get to know one another and
• 7:18
share information about the flight time, passengers, and safety protocols.
• 7:24
The team, pilots and flight attendants walk through the airport
• 7:27
and go through security and passport control just like you.
• 7:31
Captain Beverly is in charge of this crew today. Flight
• 7:35
deck checklist on board, Captain Beverly and First Officer Jean
• 7:40
Luke take their seats in the flight deck the cabin
• 7:44
where all the controls are Before every flight, they use
• 7:47
that checklist to make sure that the plane is ready
• 7:50
to fly, parking brakes, set, shocks removed. Safety first flight
• 7:57
attendants keep all the passengers on the plane set before
• 8:01
taking off. In ten Shawna and Liza check that all
• 8:05
of the safety equipment is on board and rage to
• 8:07
be used if needed getting on the plane. Once inside
• 8:11
the plane, Sophia and Rowan look at their tickets with
• 8:14
a confused look on their faces. Twenty C and twenty E.
• 8:18
What does that mean? Their mom shows flight attendant Shawna.
• 8:21
The family's tickets just walked down the aisle until you
• 8:25
see the number twenty above the seats, Shawna says, cheerfully.
• 8:29
On an airplane, every seat has a row number and
• 8:32
a letter on it. Row one is at the front,
• 8:35
followed by Row two, and all the way back until
• 8:37
you run out of the plane. The letters start with
• 8:40
A on the left side of the plane and then
• 8:42
follow the alphabet across the seats to the right. There
• 8:46
are three seats in every row on their plane. Rowan
• 8:48
sits in the middle seat next to his mom in
• 8:51
one row, while Sophia sits next to the aisle on
• 8:55
the other side of the aisle. Rowan looks at the
• 8:58
other passenger still boarding and wonders where they come from.
• 9:02
Sophia and Rowan went to read their books during the flight,
• 9:05
so they put their bipicks underneath the seats in front
• 9:08
of them. Their parents plan on taking a long nap
• 9:10
as soon as the plane takes off, so they lift
• 9:13
their bags into the overhead bends so they're out of
• 9:16
the way. Once everyone has taken their seats, it's time
• 9:20
for the safety demonstration. Flight attendant Xeon shows all the
• 9:24
passengers how the crew keep them safe on board. After
• 9:29
pointing out the nearest emergency exits, Xeon demonstrates how to
• 9:34
use the seat belts. The airplane seatbelt is different from
• 9:38
car seat belts, so Rowan has to practice a couple
• 9:41
of times. There you go, Rowan, You've got it, says
• 9:45
his mom up in the clouds, just like Sophia in Rowan,
• 9:50
Melinda and or Dad's have just boarded their plane. Once
• 9:53
the doors are closed, the airplane is ready to go.
• 9:57
When an aeroplane moves on the ground, it's called taxiing. Melinda,
• 10:00
who was at first nervous for a trip, is now
• 10:03
excited to see the world from the sky. She watches
• 10:06
out the window as the airplane taxis passed the air
• 10:09
traffic control tower and the fire station. Captain Crewe Ready
• 10:15
for takeoff, says Captain Sally over the loud speaker. The
• 10:19
engines start to spin really fast and make a loud noise,
• 10:23
and the plane accelerates forward. They whizz down the runway
• 10:27
and then up, up they go. Melinda's pushed back into
• 10:31
her seat, just like being on a ride. The airplane
• 10:34
makes a big turn after it takes off, and Melinda
• 10:37
spots the airport. Look, daddy, there it is. After the
• 10:41
airplane finishes climbing, it levels off at what is called
• 10:44
the cruising altitude, usually around thirty five thousand feet up
• 10:49
in the sky. Everyone settles down for the flight, but
• 10:52
first it's time for dinner. Flight Attendant Natalie rows the
• 10:55
cart down the aisle chicken her pasta, which would you prefer?
• 11:00
Natalie then hands the passengers their meals on one of
• 11:04
the trays that was carefully prepared earlier by the catering team.
• 11:08
Prepare for landing. On a different flight, Captain Monica and
• 11:12
her care about to land at our airport after a
• 11:15
long journey. Flight Attendant Rocksande walks through the plane, reminding
• 11:19
anyone who has reclined their seats to put them back
• 11:22
and upright, and to put away all the trade tables.
• 11:25
She also makes sure everyone's seatbelts are fastened and that
• 11:29
all bags have been put away, either into the overhead
• 11:31
bins or underneath the seats in front of each passenger.
• 11:35
In the flight deck, Captain Monica and First Officer Ach
• 11:39
can concentrate on landing the plane. They're using all their
• 11:43
skills and experience to fly the airplane smoothly, lower and
• 11:46
lower toward the airport. Air Traffic controllers tell them which
• 11:50
direction to fly in and when to make turns seal
• 11:53
the plane lines up with correct runway. In the distance,
• 11:56
they spot the runway lights, which helped them judge how
• 11:59
far away the airport is and how high they're flying.
• 12:02
Just before landing, an automatic system called a radio automat
• 12:06
or meter calls out how high they are in feet
• 12:10
fifty forty thirty twenty. As they crossed the near end
• 12:14
of the runway, they reduce power on the engines and
• 12:17
they're playing floats to the ground with a little bump
• 12:20
time for the brakes. And here we are. Good job team.
• 12:24
Passport Control. When you fly a different country, you have
• 12:28
to pass through a checkpoint which is called passport control.
• 12:32
This is where immigration officers make sure everyone is who
• 12:35
they say they are. The airport is very busy today.
• 12:38
There's a line of recently land a passengers. The zigzags
• 12:42
all the way down the immigration hall, just like a
• 12:45
huge worm. At the checkpoint, you either show your passport
• 12:48
to immigration officer or you use an electronic gate that
• 12:52
scans your passport. May just derived from legos in Nigeria.
• 12:57
She's incredibly tired, but rive. She hands her passport to Kevin,
• 13:02
an immigration officer. Kevin checks every passenger's passport, looks it
• 13:07
up in the computer system, and sometimes as a question
• 13:10
about their trip. Once he's happy, he stamps their passport
• 13:14
and waves them through. Now Key just arrived from Tokyo
• 13:18
in Japan. He uses the electronic gate, where the line
• 13:21
is a lot shorter. He holds the photo page of
• 13:24
his passport on the scanner and looks into the automatic camera.
• 13:28
A picture appears on the screen and numbers count three
• 13:31
two one flash. The gate uses facial recognition technology to
• 13:37
scan this picture and confirm is no Key success. The
• 13:42
screen shows Key a green arrol. The gate opens and
• 13:46
he walks through to go to find his luggage. Where's
• 13:50
my bag? Did you check a large bag before your flight?
• 13:54
If you did, it will reappear in the baggish claimed
• 13:57
cares sal belt, usually about thirty minutes or so after
• 14:00
your plane pulls up to the gate. You can't see them,
• 14:03
but baggage loaders are working as quickly as they can
• 14:07
to unload your bags from the plane, drive them to
• 14:09
the terminal and put them on the right carou soel
• 14:12
belt where everyone is waiting for their bags. The carou
• 14:15
soel belt slowly wind around and around so everyone can
• 14:19
get their luggage. Matilda just derive from a beach vacation.
• 14:23
She's not prepared for the cold weather here and quickly
• 14:26
looks for a sweater. She still needs to pick up
• 14:30
her surfboard. People check all sorts of luggage. Can you
• 14:34
help Matilda find her surfboard? Oh? No, Murphy's suitcase didn't arrive.
• 14:40
Sometimes the luggage gets left behind at the departure airport.
• 14:44
Murphy goes to the lost luggage desk, where Peter asks
• 14:47
him some question questions, what color is it? How big,
• 14:52
is it? Does it have wheels? And if so, how many?
• 14:55
Peter puts all this information to the computer, and luckily
• 14:59
he finds Murphy's Peter apologizes and requests for it to
• 15:03
be put on the next flight. Murphy's bag will then
• 15:06
be delivered straight to his hotel reuniting with friends and family.
• 15:11
Once you pass through the final doors to the arrivals area,
• 15:16
your journey through the airport is complete. Here family and
• 15:19
friends might be waiting to welcome you. Is that someone's
• 15:22
dad waiting with flowers? Can you spot the driver ready
• 15:25
to take the business woman to an important meeting? Oh? Look,
• 15:29
that family has just reunited after a long time. In
• 15:32
the arrivals area, you'll also find all sorts of ways
• 15:35
to continue on your journey, even if someone hasn't come
• 15:38
to collect you. Perhaps there's a train you need to
• 15:41
rush to, or maybe you'll take the bus to reach
• 15:43
some friends in the city. Wait, is that you know
• 15:47
that famous actor from that blockbuster movie? All kinds of
• 15:51
people fly through the airport, and sometimes that includes big stars.
• 15:55
Did you see anybody famous on your trip? No pictures,
• 16:01
says the actor's bodyguard as they make their way past
• 16:04
the paper Rozzi nighttime at the airport. At most airports
• 16:11
there aren't many flights taking off or landing late at night,
• 16:14
but the airport never goes to sleep. With fewer flights,
• 16:17
there are fewer people needed to send them where they
• 16:20
need to go. Air Traffic controller Trixie waves good night
• 16:23
to her colleagues who have arrived for their night ships.
• 16:27
Other parts of the airport are still buzzing with activity
• 16:30
and the maintenance hangar planes are being checked and repaired.
• 16:33
At the gates. Mechanics and technicians check that every seatbelt
• 16:38
and in flight movie screen is working properly on every airplane.
• 16:43
Cleaners replace things such as pillows and blankets ready for
• 16:47
the first flights in the morning. In the terminal, how
• 16:51
they are closes up cafe for the night. In just
• 16:54
a few hours, eager passengers will be lining up for
• 16:58
their morning coffees. Cleans up a mess on the floor
• 17:01
so nobody slips on it. While security guard Janus patrols
• 17:07
the halls and waving goodnight to their colleagues. Pilots Monica
• 17:11
and Aiken head home for the night. Outside, it gets
• 17:14
quieter and quieter. The airport is waiting for tomorrow, when
• 17:17
new passengers will arrive to start a brand new day.
• 17:24
Our next story is called Construction Site Taking Flight and
• 17:29
it was published by Chronicle Books has a copyright year
• 17:33
of twenty twenty three and it was written by Sherry
• 17:37
Dusky Wrinker. Six truck friends are on their way to
• 17:42
start a brand new job today. They're off to work
• 17:45
and feeling strong. But traffic's slow. The lines are long.
• 17:50
They can barely row at all. This is whole airport
• 17:53
is way too small. Everyone must sit and wait on streets,
• 17:57
on runways at the gate, and everyone is running late.
• 18:01
There should be a bigger road to handle all this
• 18:03
traffic load. The airport should be bigger, too, so everyone
• 18:07
can zip right through. This will be one massive mission.
• 18:12
Build a big airport. Addition, so many trucks they've never
• 18:17
seen in awesome airplanes in between. They wave hello, and
• 18:21
then they're gone. No one slows or stops for long.
• 18:25
The airport's an exciting place. The ground crew keeps a
• 18:28
speedy's pace. There's a lot for them to do. Construction
• 18:33
trucks get busy too. First excavator starts to row. He
• 18:39
digs and scoops to make a hoe. A huge foundation,
• 18:42
wide and deep, and a giant soul soil heap load
• 18:47
or joins the team today and dump trunk calls the
• 18:51
dirt away. A jetplane flies in from the sky, touches
• 18:55
down and lands nearby. She slowly taxes to her pulls
• 19:00
right in, then stops and parks That loader, pulls up
• 19:04
to the side and loads the luggage get a ride.
• 19:07
She takes suitcases off the plane, then all aboard the
• 19:11
baggage train. Now here comes tractor off to tow the
• 19:15
luggage where it needs to go. Bulldoze or ribs and
• 19:19
pushes strong and clears a path two miles long. Cement
• 19:23
mixer pours some fresh concrete. Then it spreads out all
• 19:27
nice and neat, with more runways for planes to land.
• 19:30
Their airport's starting to expand. Hydrant dispenser fulls fuel tanks.
• 19:37
The grateful airplanes all say thanks. Tug pulls a plane
• 19:41
away to tech. It's time for this one's maintenance check.
• 19:45
In the sky and on the ground, there are airplanes
• 19:48
all around. While airplanes wait their turns to fly, the
• 19:52
trucks keep working hard nearby. When this job is finally done,
• 19:57
no more delays for everyone. Cargo plane is taking flight,
• 20:01
hauling tons with strength and might. Now. Rubble removal machine
• 20:07
is getting runways nice and clean, rolling spinning with his
• 20:10
scrubber erase an airplane tire rubber. He polishes the landing
• 20:15
strip to help make sure that planes won't slip. Jumbo
• 20:21
jets trip is beginning. She takes off with fan blade spinning.
• 20:25
Crane truck sees her flying past. He's nearly finished here
• 20:29
at last. While crane truck's lifting loads today, Lift truck
• 20:34
works too. Not far away. She drives right in and
• 20:37
stops before she lifts up to the airplane door. Crane
• 20:41
truck sees what she can do. I see you like
• 20:45
to lift things too. Skid steer carries heavy stacks. She
• 20:50
rows on wheels or on tracks with attachments for each
• 20:54
shore she can lift and push in more. Her grapple
• 20:58
helps her haul a being. She works so hard to
• 21:01
help the team. Everyone is on the go when suddenly
• 21:04
it starts to snow, an unexpected springtime storm. Quickly, snow
• 21:09
drifts start to form, and soon the snow is really high.
• 21:13
The runways covered. Planes can't fly. Snow removal team let's row.
• 21:20
They all line up to take control. Snowplows gather, then
• 21:24
attack with sweepers whirling round and back, and here come
• 21:27
the mighty blowers. Awesome roaring snow drift throwers. Now tankers
• 21:33
all row in and spray some stuff that melts the
• 21:36
ice away, and at last runways clear. This job is done.
• 21:41
The airplanes cheer. Construction trucks then lend a hand so
• 21:46
ground crew trucks can work as planned. The icing truck
• 21:50
now clears the snow and ice from planes so they
• 21:53
can go. She lifts her boom into the sky. She
• 21:56
aims and set the pressure high with spray layer, lasting
• 22:01
at full power. Planes get a de icing shower from
• 22:05
those to tale she sprays each one. The sky's clear
• 22:08
as the last plane's done. This project was a soaring
• 22:13
feat and now this giant job's complete. The airport crew
• 22:18

another workday ins. These teams were strangers, now they're friends.
• 22:28
While plane lights twinkle overhead, her working trucks roll into bed,
• 22:33
drive off to sleep and dream of flight. Good work,
• 22:37
big trucks, now sh good night. Our next story is
• 22:42
about going to the beach, and it's titled a Beach Tale.
• 22:48
It was published by Boyd Mills Press Incorporated. It's a

copyright yeer of twenty ten and it was written by

Karen Lynn Williams. Swish Swosh. Gregory drew a lion in
• 23:04
the sand, a sea lion dead, asked a sandy lion.
• 23:09
Gregory said, Sandy needs a tail, said dad. Gregory picked
• 23:14
up his sturdy drawing stick. Don't go in the water,
• 23:17
and don't leave Sandy. Dad said, I won't, said Gregory.
• 23:21
Dad sat down on the dolphintail under the blue umbrella.
• 23:26
Swish swoosh. Gregory drew a tail. He did not go
• 23:29
in the water, and he did not leave Sandy. Sandy's
• 23:32
tail got longer until Gregory came to a purple jellyfish.
• 23:37
He made a loop around the gooey blop. So did
• 23:40
Sandy's tail. Swish swish. Gregory came to the mound, an
• 23:46
old castle washed smooth by the waves. He went up
• 23:50
and over and down. So did Sandy's tail. But Gregory
• 23:53
did not go in the water, and he did not
• 23:55
leave Sandy. Sandy's tail got longer until Gregory came to
• 24:01
horseshoe crab. He made a big zig and then a
• 24:04
zag around that old crab's pointer. Sandy's tail went zig
• 24:09
zag too, swish swoosh. Gregory came to a giant hoe.
• 24:14
Gregory went down and up, so did Sandy's tail. Sandy's
• 24:18
tail got longer until Gregory saw a tiny ghost crab
• 24:22
scurring sideways into his dark round hoe. Gregory went round
• 24:26
and round the hoe. Sandy's tail went round and round two.
• 24:30
But Gregory did not go in the water and he
• 24:33
did not leave Sandy. Swish swoosh. Gregory wrote his name
• 24:38
  g R E G. Sandy's tail got longer. Suddenly, a
• 24:43
wave snuck up onto the sand. It tickled Gregory's toes.
• 24:47
Gregory jumped back and traced the lacy wavy line. Sandy's
• 24:52
tail made a wavy line two, but Gregory did not
• 24:55
go in the water and he did not leave Sandy.
• 24:58
Swish swoosh. Sandy's tail got longer until Gregory came to Jetty.
• 25:03
He heard a loud roar. Gregory looked up. A giant
• 25:07
wave crashed on the rocks. The spray flashed Gregory. He
• 25:11
turned around to look for Dad. Ooh, oh what now,
• 25:15
swish swoosh. Gregory followed Sandy's tail. He followed the wavy
• 25:20
line swish swoosh. He traced his name, his nickname backward
• 25:26
g e rg. He went around and around the deep
• 25:30
dark ghost crab hoe. Swish swoosh. He went down into
• 25:35
the giant hoe and up again, zagging and zig. He
• 25:38
went around the horseshoe crabs pointer. Oooh. Gregory looked down
• 25:43
the beach. No Sandy, no Dad on the dolphin tail
• 25:47
under the blue umbrella. But Gregory saw the mound of
• 25:52
the old castle waft smoothed by the waves. Swish swoosh.
• 25:57
He went up and over and down with Sandy's tail
• 26:01
and a loop around the gooey purple jellyfish. Swish swosh.
• 26:06
Greggory followed the loop, and then he came to Sandy.
• 26:11
Ooh oh. Gregory looked up. There was the blue umbrella.
• 26:16
There was the dolphin tail. Dad waved, Sandy has a
• 26:20
long tail, he said. I didn't go in the water,
• 26:24
Gregory said, But Sandy got wet, he added. Dad held
• 26:27
Gregory's hand. Let's get wet too. This concludes the children's
