- 0:05Welcome to The Hypnotist, the show that gives you inside
- 0:09access to cutting edge hypnosis with real clients facing.
- 0:12Genuine issues. Brought to you by The
- 0:14Hypnotherapist, Demanded by celebrities, CEOs and even
- 0:18royalty, Adam Cox. These recordings took place live
- 0:22from Adam Smith in London's world famous Harley Street.
- 0:29So get yourself comfortable and enjoy today's episode of The
- 0:33Hypnotist. Hi, it's Adam here.
- 0:41And this is quite a, an emotive session because it deals with
- 0:47something that I'm seeing more and more often.
- 0:49And it's the emotional abuse that can come from religion.
- 0:55And I think even though I'm an atheist, I think lots of
- 0:58religions are wonderful things that if they support empowering
- 1:03belief systems, kindness, respect and love, then they're
- 1:07wonderful. And that could be a very good
- 1:10thing. Unfortunately, lots of these
- 1:13things like religions can be corrupted based on the agenda of
- 1:18individuals and you see that with politics sometimes.
- 1:22Wars are justified. Based on religion, certainly.
- 1:26You know, the Crusades in the Middle Ages and lots of things,
- 1:31horrible things that were done in kind of Africa and Ireland
- 1:34and all different parts of the Americas in the name of
- 1:38Christianity and Catholicism, horrible.
- 1:42But some of the underlying belief systems can be very
- 1:45positive. But it can be corrupted.
- 1:46It can be utilized with an agenda.
- 1:50And this particular client had a Muslim upbringing and their
- 1:56mother was unfortunately quite ignorant, not that well
- 1:59educated, but they used the the good essence of the religion and
- 2:05they used it for malicious purposes and that is to control,
- 2:09coerce, to strike fear in their child.
- 2:14So a lot of this is about breaking free from the emotional
- 2:18trauma and the emotional abuse where God and religion was used
- 2:23not as something positive to inspire, but as a weapon to hurt
- 2:28and abuse. So if you can resonate with the
- 2:30idea of religious abuse and you might still have belief systems
- 2:35that 'cause you shame or guilt or fear and anxiety connected to
- 2:40some of the religious teachings, then you might benefit from
- 2:44hypnotherapy. This client certainly did.
- 2:48Now, their situation might not be your situation.
- 2:51So if you like the idea of something a bit more bespoke for
- 2:53you, I would encourage you to do one of two things.
- 2:56There is a. Suitability test, and there's
- 2:59also a webinar where I describe how I work and how hypnosis can
- 3:02help. They're both in the description,
- 3:04so check them out if they are of interest.
- 3:07For now though, you might get some value from this.
- 3:10Find a quiet, comfortable place where you won't be distracted or
- 3:13disturbed. Relax and enjoy.
- 3:16The session. Take a deep breath in and as you
- 3:36breathe in, breathe in that feeling of calm.
- 3:40And as you exhale, just allow your eyelids to feel heavy
- 3:47close. And as they close, just listen
- 3:51to the sound of my voice. Breathing in a feeling of calm,
- 3:55relaxation and exhaling tension. And if you need to position your
- 4:03body in a way that facilitates even more calm and comfort,
- 4:09allow yourself to do that now. That's it.
- 4:15Breathing and relaxation and exhaling tension.
- 4:26And I want you to think of the journey you've made to be here,
- 4:33and not just today, and not just physically, but across many
- 4:39years, countries, languages, losses and achievements that
- 4:46most people would never be able to navigate.
- 4:52And yet you are here. And just give a moment to
- 4:59connect to a feeling of pride at how remarkable it is that you've
- 5:07been able to do as much as you have breathing in, a feeling of
- 5:18calm relaxation as you allow the breath to calm and go without
- 5:23interference. Of course your body knows how to
- 5:28breathe. It's been breathing through
- 5:32everything, through the storms outside but also the storms
- 5:41inside, through the years of difficulty and the years of
- 5:49building something real and valuable from very little.
- 5:59And somewhere beneath all of that, beneath the history, in
- 6:05the accumulated weight of things carried for too long, there is a
- 6:11part. A part within you that has been
- 6:16watching quietly, steadily, that has observed everything that has
- 6:23happened and has remained intact, present, unmoved at its
- 6:32centre, even when everything around it was in motion.
- 6:47And this is the part of you I'm speaking to today.
- 6:53The observer, the witness, The part that is older and wiser
- 7:03than any story that has ever been told about you, either by
- 7:10others or by yourself. I'm going to countdown from
- 7:1712:50 and I want you to imagine being at the stop of the
- 7:22staircase and walking down. And as I countdown from 12:50,
- 7:28just imagine walking down the staircase.
- 7:33Each step represents a feeling of going deeper and deeper
- 7:40within. And maybe it's a wooden
- 7:43staircase, a marble staircase, or something else. 10 Taking
- 7:50that first step 9. Just allow the body to become
- 7:54heavier and more at rest with each number 8.
- 8:02One more step down, feel a release of emotion seven.
- 8:08Another step down, and as you go down the staircase, it almost
- 8:15feels like the surface concerns of the day start to recede 6.
- 8:22Another step down 5. Halfway down now, four arms and
- 8:28legs getting heavier, 4 more feeling your internal organs
- 8:34start to relax. Lungs, heart, stomach going
- 8:40deeper into that. Still watching centre 3 nearly
- 8:46the bottom of the staircase now and two and one.
- 8:50Feel a ripple of relaxation from your toes to the top of your
- 8:53head, back down to your fingertips.
- 9:01The staircase has taken you to a place we can call your centre, a
- 9:08centre of stillness. And here you are at this still
- 9:14centre where the real work can happen, with a part of you that
- 9:20has always known the truth is present and listening.
- 9:30You already know that you he was a soul, he was an entity, he was
- 9:36a human and not the story. And there is a distinction at a
- 9:45level deeper than words, a distinction between the story
- 9:52and the storyteller, between the content of a life and the one
- 9:59who has been watching that content unfold.
- 10:05And you've been given many stories about yourself, stories
- 10:10that began before you were old enough to evaluate them, stories
- 10:16that were delivered with authority and fear, and the
- 10:20particular power that a parent holds over a child who hasn't
- 10:27learned yet that parents can and often are, be wrong.
- 10:36Maybe you heard words, stories, when you were young.
- 10:41You were bad. You were causing this under
- 10:47storms, lightning, wind is God's warning and it's all because of
- 10:52you. And you will never be enough.
- 10:58Others are better than you. Your achievements mean nothing.
- 11:07But you know they weren't truths.
- 11:11They were tools, instruments of control, used by someone who was
- 11:19afraid of losing power over you. Someone who, in the grip of
- 11:27their own limitations and unhappiness, reach for the most
- 11:32powerful lever available, which was the child who loved her and
- 11:40wanted to please her, and believed, as many children
- 11:46believe, that what a mother says must be true.
- 11:53And maybe for years, deep down, you believed, or at least hoped,
- 12:02that your mother wanted the best for you.
- 12:06She wanted you to do well. And sometimes we only know later
- 12:15that those things we were hoping were never true, never real,
- 12:26Your own deepest experience confirms.
- 12:29That you are. Not, and never were those
- 12:33stories. You have never been those
- 12:37stories. You were the one who has been
- 12:41experiencing those stories, watching them, surviving them,
- 12:49and in time, questioning them. I want you to use the power of
- 12:57your imagination to think of it in an unusual way.
- 13:03You are the sky and those stories are clouds.
- 13:12They moved through you and some of them were very dark and very
- 13:17heavy and some of them stayed for a long time and seemed like
- 13:23they would never pass. But they were always just the
- 13:28weather passing through the sky and the sky itself.
- 13:36The awareness that watched them come and go was never the
- 13:41clouds. You are not the stories told
- 13:49about you. You are the one that's been
- 13:54watching those stories. And you are more capable, more
- 14:00powerful than any words, any stories.
- 14:08Think back all the way back when you first arrived, but the
- 14:15language you were still learning, how quickly you
- 14:20adapted, met real people, connected your desire to study,
- 14:33improve yourself, even though you were carrying the weight of
- 14:39a family's disapproval. The very people that should have
- 14:44been encouraging and congratulating you, we're
- 14:47criticizing, diminishing all of that hard work and effort.
- 14:59You were always good, always loyal, tried, tried to make a
- 15:07mother proud. And perhaps it's only recently
- 15:14realized that Void could never have been filled.
- 15:25You were someone growing consistently, making
- 15:31connections, friends, becoming wiser in spite of all of those
- 15:40attempts to crush you, diminish you, stop you and the observer
- 15:49self. The sky that held all of that
- 15:54has been there the entire time, watching, patient intact.
- 16:01And it is from that observer position that we're speaking
- 16:07now. It's from that position that the
- 16:12work of real liberation begins, because some people are trapped
- 16:21in chains, some people are trapped in buildings, but some
- 16:27people are trapped because of emotions, fears, and sometimes
- 16:36those fears are more powerful than chains and brick walls.
- 16:49And that old story, The boy in the village who cried wolf and
- 16:54there was no wolf, not once but many times, got away with it
- 17:04until the village learned that the boy could not be trusted.
- 17:15If it was anyone else other than your mother, two or three times
- 17:22would have been enough for you not to believe the stories.
- 17:32A child who was told not once or twice, but repeatedly, before
- 17:39storms, during storms, after the storms.
- 17:44Storms were God's punishment. Lightning was anger.
- 17:53You were to blame. A boy who cried wolf.
- 17:59Stories that were never true. You now know it was never true,
- 18:10but because it came with authority, the emotional
- 18:14intensity of a parent who had their own reasons for needing
- 18:18the child afraid, and that child's nervous system which is
- 18:25hard wired to trust attachment figures like parents above all
- 18:33other sources of information, believed it.
- 18:40But look now at that belief with the eyes of the observer self,
- 18:47the one who has been watching all of this time.
- 18:53Because you know what Thunder, wind, and lightning really are?
- 18:59Just nature. Thunder is the sound of
- 19:04electrical discharge in the atmosphere, a rapid expansion of
- 19:10air super heated by lightning, producing a pressure wave that
- 19:17travels as sound. And it's been doing it on Earth
- 19:25for four and a half billion years.
- 19:30Thunder and lightning existed before any human could even
- 19:38assign it a meaning. It has no opinion about you.
- 19:47The Vikings thought it was an angry God.
- 19:51Ignorant people that didn't know better often thought storms with
- 19:59the wrath of God. The end of day is an apocalypse,
- 20:07but not once. Was it ever true?
- 20:15Just nature, just physics? So the meaning that was placed
- 20:20on it was not the storm's meaning, it was just the meaning
- 20:26of a frightened, controlling woman hijacking a religion to
- 20:33control. There are many people across the
- 20:37planet that aren't religious, don't believe in God, but they
- 20:42use religion for power, for manipulation, for coercion, as
- 20:51justification for horrible things.
- 20:57These are not true believers. They're opportunists looking to
- 21:04take a belief and exploit it for their own benefit.
- 21:11This woman cried a wolf not once, but across decades.
- 21:17Not just storms, lots of other things too.
- 21:23And each time the wolf was never there.
- 21:28The punishment was not sent. The divine anger was her own
- 21:35anger and frustration at the life she was living, her own
- 21:41insecurities, her own shame projected onto others.
- 21:50All of these stories about your inadequacies just a way of
- 21:56deflecting from her own. So now your unconscious can
- 22:01begin to hear Thunder differently under is weather.
- 22:09It's always been weather. Wind is just air pressure moving
- 22:17to different lower pressure. In the same way that if you have
- 22:24a warm room and a cold room and you open the door, the warm room
- 22:30moves to the cold room. That's all Wind is the movement
- 22:37of different temperatures following different pressure in
- 22:45different environments. So let's separate wind from the
- 22:56meaning, Thunder from the meaning.
- 23:02Even if you see storm clouds on the horizon, it's just nature.
- 23:11You're not anticipating judgement, punishment, an
- 23:16apocalypse. It's just a sign that weather is
- 23:27on its way. When the clouds gather, when the
- 23:34sky darkens, when you notice the change in the air or the wind
- 23:40rising, allow your nervous system to interpret this as a
- 23:47different message. It's not danger, not punishment,
- 23:52not your fault. Observe it with interest,
- 24:01curiosity, fascination. Any old emotions come up, say to
- 24:08yourself, oh, this is interesting.
- 24:12An echo, an echo of a false story I was told, is still
- 24:19temporarily having an effect in your body, and the more you
- 24:26greet those sensations with curiosity, intrigue, then the
- 24:35more it dilutes and diminishes. You separate the sound of
- 24:42Thunder and the sensation of wind from the meaning that you
- 24:48were forced to attach to it. There is a woman who gave you
- 24:57life and who then, across the years that followed, abused and
- 25:07used the power that gift gave her in ways that caused you
- 25:13genuine harm. And it may have been not her
- 25:20explicit intention. It could be a person, the grip
- 25:26of their own fear, their own need for control, acting out,
- 25:36sometimes deliberately, sometimes maliciously.
- 25:42It doesn't matter their intention, it matters their
- 25:47impact. You now know that she was not
- 25:51happy. Happiness does not need to reach
- 25:56for control the way she did. Contentment does not require
- 26:01another person's fear to sustain itself and everything she was
- 26:08doing, the comparisons, the religious threats, the refusal
- 26:17to acknowledge her achievements, interference and opinions in
- 26:23your relationships was the behaviour of someone who
- 26:29themselves was insecure, hurt, ignorant or a combination of all
- 26:44this does not excuse it. Understanding A cause does not
- 26:50mean accepting an effect. And I want you to feel proud.
- 26:58Of that earlier. Version of you that made that
- 27:01decision with moral courage and religious clarity.
- 27:07That you needed a boundary to protect you and your life.
- 27:19Accepting that someone will not change means empowering yourself
- 27:28to change you in your proximity to that person.
- 27:34It was an act of self preservation.
- 27:40You don't need to forgive or cannot yet be forgiven.
- 27:47Maybe you can notice what you are doing when you carry the
- 27:52attachment to this past those thoughts about what she said,
- 27:59what she did, what she prevented, what she cost you.
- 28:07If that continues to occupy space in your present, there's
- 28:15still an attachment, and you can choose to break and let go of
- 28:24that attachment. Imagine you are carrying a very
- 28:30heavy bag, and the bag contains every painful thing she said and
- 28:37did, every comparison that diminished you, every storm she
- 28:43weaponized, every opportunity that was narrowed by her
- 28:48control, and every year that passed under the weight of her
- 28:53narrative about who you were, Any humiliation, embarrassment,
- 29:01mocking and laughter. And you've been carrying this
- 29:06bag for a very long time. And for a while that was out of
- 29:12loyalty. And now it might be from
- 29:20resentment, anger, frustration, or just pain.
- 29:30But putting the bag down does not mean any of it was
- 29:37justified. It just means that you're
- 29:41finally ready to move on. Putting the bag down says this
- 29:49was real. It was heavy, It did cost you
- 29:55relationships, opportunities, experiences.
- 30:00It caused real, genuine damage. But if you keep holding onto the
- 30:06bag, it hinders your future, because your future does not
- 30:14belong to her, it belongs to you.
- 30:18And if your unconscious is ready, ready to place that bag
- 30:28down so you can free up the time, the energy, the space to
- 30:34move forward to that future that's been waiting for you all
- 30:38this time, let me know about nodding your head.
- 30:43That's it. So your unconscious can allow
- 30:47that bag to be placed gently on the ground, not thrown down in
- 30:53anger, not abandoned in denial, placed with full acknowledgement
- 31:00of what it contains, and then stepped away from The bag
- 31:09represents so much more than a bag.
- 31:12Moving on is you claiming your independence, your ability to
- 31:21choose the life you want, the partner you want, the
- 31:27opportunities you want? She had her opportunity.
- 31:35She wasted it. She exploited it.
- 31:42She does not need to have a seat in the next chapter of your
- 31:47life. What does have a seat is the
- 31:52part of you that survived her. The boy that learned a new
- 31:59language, The man who studied hard, made connections, got
- 32:10wise, developed skills. You've put the down the bag of
- 32:20what she did and what she said. You've acknowledged its weight
- 32:26and you step forward without it. And you step towards that
- 32:34future. And maybe there's a thought that
- 32:45caused your pain, a sense that a train left without you.
- 32:53An idea, perhaps it was the last train, the symbolic
- 33:03representation, the one that got away, the life you could have
- 33:11had partnership, family, a different kind of life.
- 33:18That ship has sailed, and your unconscious can examine this
- 33:24thought, the clear eyes of that part within you, with all of
- 33:30your wisdom. The thought that your last train
- 33:36has gone, that the ship has sailed, that you've been left
- 33:40behind on the shelf, is a thought that was produced by a
- 33:47mine still operating under that old story.
- 33:53The story that says you were behind where you should be.
- 34:01It keeps you in the mode of a victim.
- 34:07It keeps you still attached to the bag.
- 34:13But you're different now. You've accomplished so much.
- 34:21And rather than feel continued to be punished, continued to
- 34:33feel the consequences of the words or choices or actions.
- 34:39What if, now? What if now you're at the train
- 34:48station and you can catch any train that you choose.
- 34:56You're at the dock and there is boat after boat, and you get to
- 35:05be discerning as to which train you catch.
- 35:09Boat you catch because you know with irrefutable evidence you
- 35:18can attract, you can connect. That was never the last train.
- 35:27Nothing was missed. You're now liberated, and
- 35:34whether a train or a boat represents an opportunity, a
- 35:39business, a relationship, a family, the very thing holding
- 35:47you back in the past is no longer impeding your present and
- 35:55your future. Rather than feeling weighed down
- 36:01by your past, you can feel liberated by your present and
- 36:07your future. You already know.
- 36:14You already know how to find something.
- 36:16You value the qualities you admire.
- 36:25And what if before that heavy bag weighed you down and made
- 36:30you miss that last train and you realize you're not carrying that
- 36:37bag anymore? And I want you to imagine the
- 36:45future. You with a partner, perhaps
- 36:52young children outside. And I want you to imagine
- 37:00feeling the wind pick up, see Gray clouds on the horizon.
- 37:08And I want you to imagine telling those young children
- 37:13thunderstorms are fascinating. Let's wait for the storm.
- 37:22The storm is a gift. The storm is nature.
- 37:27Let's watch it together. Maybe you can imagine being in a
- 37:34car or under some shelter and rather than the anticipation of
- 37:43dread, you can feel the excitement of sharing that
- 37:50thunderstorm with the future you desire.
- 37:59But you are different from your mother.
- 38:01You are telling those children under storms is a gift from God.
- 38:09It's nature. It's a wonder knowing that your
- 38:15children will see your fascination with storms and feel
- 38:24that way for themselves. Hurt people.
- 38:31Hurt people. Healed people heal people.
- 38:40You are not a victim, you are a survivor.
- 38:44You are not broken. You are resilient, you are not
- 38:49damaged, you are healed. And what if the very best thing
- 38:56you can do is to live a life on your terms?
- 39:03To show someone that always doubted you that they were
- 39:07always wrong? As you breathe in and breathe
- 39:14out, it's time to return to the present.
- 39:19But you return knowing that that big heavy bag has been placed
- 39:24down and left in your past, and you are now free to pursue a
- 39:29future without it. Starting to count 123.
- 39:37Starting to wake 456. More alert 7-8.
- 39:42Open your eyes. Open your eyes, 910.
- 39:45Wide awake, wide awake, wide awake.
