- 0:11Hotline friends, it's shown here.
- 0:14It is the 9th of July and you have been kind enough to tap on
- 0:19play so that you and I can read another chapter of John
- 0:23together. How good is this gospel man?
- 0:26John does not muck around, he just goes in deep.
- 0:30You know, people talk about John being like the ocean where you
- 0:33can wade in the shallows or swim and dive in the depths.
- 0:36Boy, it feels like there's a lot of depth at the moment.
- 0:39And today we'll be equally deep. So you'll have to get out your
- 0:44sonar and set it to Jesus mode. And we will learn more about our
- 0:49Saviour as we read these words. You ready to do it?
- 0:53Yeah, I am too. Let us go back all those years
- 0:58sitting beside John, hearing this old disciple reminisce and
- 1:03share his recollections and his heart all about Jesus life and
- 1:09the moments that mattered most. Let's read together John Chapter
- 1:147. After this, Jesus travelled
- 1:27around Galilee. He wanted to stay out of Judea
- 1:31where the Jewish leaders were plotting his death.
- 1:33But soon it was time for the Jewish festival of shelters and
- 1:37Jesus brothers said to him, leave here and go to Judea where
- 1:41your followers can see your miracles.
- 1:44You can't become famous if you hide like this.
- 1:47If you can do such wonderful things, show yourself to the
- 1:50world. For even his brothers didn't
- 1:53believe in him. Jesus replied, Now is not the
- 1:57right time for me to go, but you can go anytime.
- 2:01The world can't hate you, but it does hate me because I accuse it
- 2:07of doing evil. You go on.
- 2:09I'm not going to the festival because my time has not yet
- 2:12come. After saying these things, Jesus
- 2:16remained in Galilee. But after his brothers left for
- 2:20the festival, Jesus also went though secretly staying out of
- 2:25public view. The Jewish leaders tried to find
- 2:28him at the festival and kept asking if anyone had seen him.
- 2:32There was a lot of grumbling about him among the crowds.
- 2:35Some argued he's a good man, but others said he's nothing but a
- 2:40fraud who deceives the people. But no one had the courage to
- 2:44speak favourably about him in public, for they were afraid of
- 2:47getting in trouble with the Jewish leaders.
- 2:50Then, midway through the festival, Jesus went up to the
- 2:54temple and began to teach. The people were surprised when
- 2:57they heard him. How does he know so much when he
- 3:01hasn't been trained? They asked.
- 3:04So Jesus told them my message is not my own, it comes from God
- 3:09who sent me. Anyone who wants to do the will
- 3:12of God will know whether my teaching is from God or is
- 3:17merely my own. Those who speak for themselves
- 3:20want glory only for themselves. But a person who seeks to honour
- 3:25the one who sent him speaks truth, not lies.
- 3:29Moses gave you the law, but none of you obeys it.
- 3:32In fact, you were trying to kill me, the crowd replied.
- 3:36You're demon possessed who's trying to kill you, Jesus
- 3:40replied. I did one miracle on the
- 3:43Sabbath, and you were amazed that you work on the Sabbath too
- 3:47when you obey Moses law of circumcision.
- 3:51Actually, this tradition of circumcision began with the
- 3:54patriarchs long before the Law of Moses.
- 3:57For if the correct time for circumcising your son falls on
- 4:01the Sabbath, you go ahead and do it so as not to break the Law of
- 4:05Moses. So why should you be angry with
- 4:08me for healing a man on the Sabbath?
- 4:10Look beneath the surface so you can judge correctly.
- 4:15Some of the people who lived in Jerusalem started to ask each
- 4:18other, isn't this the man they're trying to kill?
- 4:22But here he is speaking in public, and they say nothing to
- 4:26him. Could our leaders possibly
- 4:28believe that He is the Messiah? But how could he be?
- 4:32For we know where this man comes from.
- 4:35When the Messiah comes, he will simply appear.
- 4:39No one will know where he comes from.
- 4:42While Jesus was teaching in the temple, he called out, yes, you
- 4:47know me and you know where I come from, but I'm not here on
- 4:51my own. The one who sent me is true, and
- 4:55you don't know Him, but I know him because I come from him and
- 5:00he sent me to you. Then the leaders tried to arrest
- 5:04him, but no one laid a hand on him because his time had not yet
- 5:09come. Many among the crowds at the
- 5:12temple believed in him. After all, they said, would you
- 5:16expect the Messiah to do more miraculous signs than this man
- 5:19has done? When the Pharisees heard that
- 5:22the crowds were whispering such things, they and the leading
- 5:25priests sent temple guards to arrest Jesus.
- 5:28But Jesus told them, I will be with you only a little longer,
- 5:33then I will return to the one who sent me.
- 5:36You will search for me, but not find me.
- 5:39And you cannot go where I'm going.
- 5:42The Jewish leaders were puzzled by the statement.
- 5:45Where is he planning to go? They asked is he thinking of
- 5:49leaving the country and going to the Jews in other lands?
- 5:52Maybe he will even teach the Greeks.
- 5:55What does he mean when he says he will search for me but not
- 5:58find me? And you cannot go where I'm
- 6:00going? On the last day, the climax of
- 6:05the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds.
- 6:09Anyone who is thirsty may come to me.
- 6:13Anyone who believes in me may come and drink.
- 6:17For the Scriptures declare rivers of living water will flow
- 6:21from his heart. When he said living water, he
- 6:25was Speaking of the Spirit who would be given to everyone
- 6:28believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been
- 6:31given, because Jesus had not yet entered into His glory.
- 6:36When the crowds heard him say this, some of them declared
- 6:40Surely this man is the prophet we've been expecting, others
- 6:45said. He is the Messiah, still others
- 6:48said. But he can't be.
- 6:51Well, the Messiah come from Galilee, for the Scriptures
- 6:55clearly state that the Messiah will be born of the royal line
- 6:58of David in Bethlehem, the village where King David was
- 7:02born said the crowd was divided about him.
- 7:06Some even wanted him arrested, but no one laid a hand on him.
- 7:10When the temple guards returned without having arrested Jesus,
- 7:14the leading priests and Pharisees demanded, Why didn't
- 7:17you bring him in? We have never heard anyone speak
- 7:22like this. The guards responded.
- 7:25Have you been LED astray to the Pharisees?
- 7:28Mocked. Is there a single one of us
- 7:30rulers or Pharisees who believes in Him?
- 7:33This foolish crowd follows him, but they are ignorant of the
- 7:37law. God's curses on them.
- 7:41Then Nicodemus, the leader who had met with Jesus earlier,
- 7:44spoke up. Is it legal to convict a man
- 7:48before he is given a hearing? He asked.
- 7:51They replied, Are you from Galilee too?
- 7:55Search the scriptures and see for yourself.
- 7:57No prophet ever comes from Galilee.
- 8:10Jesus, thank you for cutting right through to the truth.
- 8:16Thank you that when we get bogged down with details and
- 8:19rules, you talk from the heart as here you point out the folly
- 8:26of these rules about the Sabbath, but instead you point
- 8:30to love and inclusion. And God's will was for us to be
- 8:36well and to find rest and to enjoy our lives knowing that He
- 8:42is the provider. That you are the provider, Lord,
- 8:46and we get so confused by all the complications that we add to
- 8:50your words. But here we have your words.
- 8:54So simple and so fresh that you are the living water, and that
- 9:00you will give us your Spirit, and that from your Spirit will
- 9:06pour life giving water for us. Thank you Jesus for the gift of
- 9:11your Spirit. Come Holy Spirit, may that life
- 9:15giving water flow from us to shape and change the world
- 9:20around us with your radical presence and love.
- 9:26You are truly glorious and we adore you.
- 9:30And it's in your name that we pray, Jesus, Amen.
