- 0:24Speaker 1: All right, cottra is so nice to meet you.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Great meeting me too.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Thank you for coming over here. I've been looking forward
- 0:30Speaker 1: to meeting you for a very long time. Consider myself
- 0:33Speaker 1: a big fan and a loyal, longtime follower. You're amazing
- 0:37Speaker 1: and your story is just insane things that you've been
- 0:42Speaker 1: able to do and what you've had to overcome to
- 0:44Speaker 1: be this incredible person that you are. So I'm excited
- 0:48Speaker 1: to explore it with you.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 0:50Speaker 1: So, the latest thing that you just did was you
- 0:53Speaker 1: conquered these three two hundreds right in a.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Row, two hundreds within ten.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Weeks, within ten weeks, yet six.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Hundred and fifty plus miles of racing. So three they're
- 1:07Speaker 2: not looped short loop courses. These are mountainous courses. So
- 1:10Speaker 2: the first one was big Foot two hundred in Washington,
- 1:13Speaker 2: which was very very technical around Mount Saint Helen's a
- 1:17Speaker 2: huge loop, crazy conditioned, very very rugged, like you were
- 1:21Speaker 2: out there and so you had to make sure that
- 1:23Speaker 2: you carried enough gear for twenty miles in between up
- 1:26Speaker 2: to ten hours by yourself. And then the second one
- 1:29Speaker 2: was Tahoe two hundred, which I had done before, and
- 1:32Speaker 2: that one in dusty, dirty Rubicon trail, lots of climbing,
- 1:36Speaker 2: hot you know, conditions. And this last one was in
- 1:39Speaker 2: Moab and it was two hundred and forty miles, and
- 1:41Speaker 2: it actually got extended because there was so much snow
- 1:45Speaker 2: up in the higher elevations where we were supposed to
- 1:47Speaker 2: go at ten to five that she couldn't send us
- 1:50Speaker 2: up there. It would been up to our crotches and
- 1:51Speaker 2: so nine thousand, but we still had like a good
- 1:55Speaker 2: seven to ten miles of snow to deal with. Wow,
- 1:57Speaker 2: so freezing cold too.
- 1:59Speaker 1: So yeah, it ended up like three or four miles
- 2:01Speaker 1: longer or something like that.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Yeah, it ended up being two hundred and forty three miles, right,
- 2:04Speaker 2: so it was actually five because it was two thirty eight.
- 2:07Speaker 1: How much how much time in between these two hundreds.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Uh, they were like less than a.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Month, Right, that's unbelieving.
- 2:14Speaker 2: So you're constantly like when you finish, you're recovering and
- 2:17Speaker 2: then you're tapering. So there's no right, there's no in between,
- 2:22Speaker 2: like really long running. I think I did once or
- 2:25Speaker 2: twice a couple of twenty mile long runs, but there
- 2:27Speaker 2: was no reason too. It was like ten miles at
- 2:30Speaker 2: tops when I'm going up in the mountains but.
- 2:32Speaker 1: I mean that's kind for people that are racing ultras
- 2:34Speaker 1: all the time. The races are the training right exactly
- 2:37Speaker 1: in between, you're maintaining, or you're tapering, or you're just
- 2:40Speaker 1: trying to absorb the fitness that you garnered as a
- 2:44Speaker 1: result of the race. Yep. I mean it's just amazing
- 2:48Speaker 1: that you And are you the first woman to do
- 2:51Speaker 1: what's it called the triple tripple crown?
- 2:53Speaker 2: No, but I think of the oldest woman, oldest female,
- 2:55Speaker 2: I mean fifty three. Yeah, but yeah, so there was, yeah,
- 2:59Speaker 2: there there was no other women in their fifties doing
- 3:02Speaker 2: the triple. I mean they started doing it, but not
- 3:04Speaker 2: everybody finished. So last year two women finished, and I
- 3:06Speaker 2: believe this year seven of us seven females finished finished
- 3:10Speaker 2: all three, all three of them. So it only started
- 3:12Speaker 2: last year.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Huh. Well, the Moab to forty has gotten a lot
- 3:16Speaker 1: of press in the last year or so because of
- 3:19Speaker 1: Courtney to Walter, like just crushing everybody.
- 3:22Speaker 2: She's insane at Tahoe. I don't know what you saw.
- 3:24Speaker 1: If she I haven't been following it that closely.
- 3:26Speaker 2: So this year she was in the lead pretty much
- 3:28Speaker 2: the whole time at Tahoe and then she started having
- 3:30Speaker 2: stomach problems and only lost the lead within the last
- 3:33Speaker 2: ten miles, So she was racing another guy the whole
- 3:35Speaker 2: entire time.
- 3:36Speaker 1: So does she end up second? Then yep, and she.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Got the blue, the woman's course record out of the water.
- 3:41Speaker 1: She was staster than the year before.
- 3:43Speaker 2: They both broke the course record, so so it didn't
- 3:46Speaker 2: he was, you know, he broke the overall course record
- 3:49Speaker 2: and her time was still an overall course record.
- 3:51Speaker 1: She said, what is it? What's going on with her?
- 3:53Speaker 2: She's a mad I mean, she ran, she is she's
- 3:56Speaker 2: so sweet.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Too, and I know you he interviews with her and
- 3:59Speaker 1: she's like, oh, I don't know. I just go and
- 4:01Speaker 1: I run.
- 4:01Speaker 2: She doesn't wear a watch, she doesn't have a coach,
- 4:04Speaker 2: she doesn't you know. She's just one of those amazing talented,
- 4:07Speaker 2: gifted athletes. And she won Western States this year too
- 4:10Speaker 2: as well. So and she's at this big yard, uh
- 4:14Speaker 2: big yard, I forget the name of the race this weekend,
- 4:17Speaker 2: and she's going to try to like do three hundred
- 4:19Speaker 2: miles there. So it's a four mile, four and a
- 4:21Speaker 2: half mile loop. Every hour on the hour, you start
- 4:23Speaker 2: the loop and you go as far as you.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Can, So you wait an hour and then you start again.
- 4:29Speaker 2: You wait to the top of the hour.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Right, so every hour you run for every top of
- 4:33Speaker 1: day aggregate time. What's that? So it's the aggregate time
- 4:36Speaker 1: that it's interesting. So that involves speed in the way
- 4:41Speaker 1: that most ultras and how.
- 4:42Speaker 2: You're going to sleep, right, and how are you going
- 4:45Speaker 2: to like you have to like wait in between, and
- 4:48Speaker 2: so it'll be interesting to see how well she does.
- 4:50Speaker 2: But she's I heard she was going for like three
- 4:52Speaker 2: hundred miles, so because the friend of mine, Maggie's doing it,
- 4:55Speaker 2: and she's going for two forty.
- 4:56Speaker 1: So but it'll ye believable. Well, yeah, with the explosion
- 5:00Speaker 1: of the sport, you're seeing you know, the higher caliber
- 5:03Speaker 1: athletes getting into it, and she's she's dominating like nobody's
- 5:06Speaker 1: business right now, which is really cool to see. And
- 5:09Speaker 1: I think she's she's still a school teacher, yep. Like
- 5:12Speaker 1: it's like she should be, Like somebody should just pay her,
- 5:16Speaker 1: you know, a lot of money.
- 5:17Speaker 2: You know, you know with our sport though there's I know,
- 5:20Speaker 2: you don't make it's like not very many people make money.
- 5:22Speaker 2: I mean you make money promoting product, and that's what
- 5:24Speaker 2: I'm doing. A lot of now since I've been around
- 5:26Speaker 2: for so long, and then I have my book out,
- 5:28Speaker 2: so you know, people pay you to use their products
- 5:30Speaker 2: and to promote it.
- 5:31Speaker 1: If you like it so well, your resume is insane.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Like I can't even keep You've done so many races,
- 5:37Speaker 1: it's impossible to It's not like we can go race
- 5:40Speaker 1: by race through this, Like I mean, all right, let's
- 5:43Speaker 1: see over one hundred hundred milers. Yep, the first US
- 5:48Speaker 1: woman to do that. Only four people have run over there.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Oh there is okay, so that's exact.
- 5:53Speaker 2: So there's probably like ten or twelve. Now, yeah, there's
- 5:56Speaker 2: at least four women now.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Two hundred and fifty plus ultras, is that correct? What
- 6:02Speaker 1: else I've been a lot of It's two hundred and
- 6:06Speaker 1: sixty marathons, one hundred and thirty seven one hundred milers
- 6:11Speaker 1: new verse records. The big thing that you did, though,
- 6:15Speaker 1: was was recorded. You recorded the fastest known time for
- 6:20Speaker 1: the ramble. You were ramble, right, three hundred and ten
- 6:23Speaker 1: miles and seven.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Days, and it was actually three hundred and twenty four months.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Right, and you went longer. Did you get lost or
- 6:28Speaker 1: what happened?
- 6:29Speaker 2: It's just a lot of rout finding the people that
- 6:31Speaker 2: wrote the guidebook, they haven't been out on that course
- 6:33Speaker 2: in ages. They did it in two thousand and six.
- 6:36Speaker 2: So after we finished it, I told them because nobody
- 6:38Speaker 2: had run it, and they were like, oh, you know,
- 6:41Speaker 2: there had been fires in the area and and so
- 6:44Speaker 2: a lot of the supersections. Yeah, So we gave her
- 6:47Speaker 2: like the bait it like, I'm like, you need to
- 6:49Speaker 2: change it on your website or you know, so if
- 6:51Speaker 2: anybody else goes out there. And I actually met another
- 6:53Speaker 2: woman doing it when I was out there. She saw
- 6:55Speaker 2: a vehicle that said Mere Ramble Root Dir Divo Caatra,
- 6:59Speaker 2: And so her and her partner were driving Bay because
- 7:01Speaker 2: we're going to go camp that night because she was
- 7:03Speaker 2: doing so many miles a day, and they pull up
- 7:05Speaker 2: and they said, who's doing the mirror ramble route? And
- 7:07Speaker 2: then I was like, oh, I am, And she was
- 7:09Speaker 2: like really, She goes, I am too, and I said, yeah,
- 7:11Speaker 2: I'm running and I'm going for the fastest time.
- 7:13Speaker 1: So did you run together?
- 7:14Speaker 2: No, she wasn't running it, she was walking it. She
- 7:16Speaker 2: was from San Francisco and she started where she lived
- 7:18Speaker 2: because it starts in San Francisco and you take the
- 7:20Speaker 2: Ferry to Oakland and that's when you start your journey
- 7:22Speaker 2: the way he went and she was just doing like
- 7:24Speaker 2: fifteen miles a day, uh huh. So and she was
- 7:26Speaker 2: a school teacher and just something to do and to
- 7:28Speaker 2: talk about in school and she went back. So yeah,
- 7:32Speaker 2: so I met her. And there's been people that have
- 7:33Speaker 2: bike did and a couple. There was only about three
- 7:36Speaker 2: people that have hiked it.
- 7:37Speaker 1: So I was like, because like I'd never heard of
- 7:40Speaker 1: the Ramble, Like, so what is it? Why is it
- 7:42Speaker 1: so obscure?
- 7:43Speaker 2: So it's the route is actually the route that John
- 7:46Speaker 2: me or when he arrived in the United States in California,
- 7:49Speaker 2: he decided I wanted to go to Yosemite, and the
- 7:52Speaker 2: way that everybody was going. They were going through like
- 7:56Speaker 2: Merced or Sacramento and taking wagons and this, that and
- 7:59Speaker 2: the other. But he goes, I want to go to
- 8:01Speaker 2: the Wild Way, the way that people aren't going to
- 8:03Speaker 2: see all things wild. So he asked somebody which direction
- 8:07Speaker 2: is the wild Way? And they said what he said,
- 8:09Speaker 2: I want to go. I don't want to go where
- 8:11Speaker 2: the people are. So he started walking when he arrived
- 8:15Speaker 2: in Oakland and started kind of along the bay, kind
- 8:18Speaker 2: of where I live, and I actually used my house
- 8:20Speaker 2: as like one night's sleep station. And so yeah, he
- 8:23Speaker 2: just went along this route and came in Yosemite through
- 8:26Speaker 2: like the backway, not the traditional way. And so there's
- 8:30Speaker 2: a lot of old roads that I was on that
- 8:32Speaker 2: are you still see pieces of pavement coming through, but
- 8:35Speaker 2: now they're like totally abandoned. Nobody uses these and I
- 8:37Speaker 2: was like really cool being on there because you know,
- 8:40Speaker 2: he was on these roads too. So they made the
- 8:43Speaker 2: course as close as possible to the original way he walked.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Of course, you can't go in the freeway. And there
- 8:48Speaker 2: was a couple of places where you were going out
- 8:49Speaker 2: fire roads with which were gnarly, like straight up and
- 8:52Speaker 2: straight down, straight up and straight out, but they didn't
- 8:54Speaker 2: want to put you on the freeway, of course.
- 8:56Speaker 1: And this is different from the John muwork exactly.
- 8:58Speaker 2: I've done that.
- 8:59Speaker 1: I have your The big thing is the Yo Yo
- 9:01Speaker 1: record that blows people's minds four hundred.
- 9:05Speaker 2: To break it after all these years, Yeah, I don't
- 9:07Speaker 2: know why.
- 9:08Speaker 1: So he basically did the whole John Muir trail.
- 9:11Speaker 2: He turned around on top and turned around and went.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Back, and you go from you, I know, you end
- 9:15Speaker 1: up at the at the do you end up at
- 9:17Speaker 1: like the base camp at Mount Whitney or do you
- 9:19Speaker 1: go all the way to the hut?
- 9:21Speaker 2: You go to the hut, so that and that's where
- 9:23Speaker 2: it starts. Even if you start from the Whitney side.
- 9:25Speaker 2: If you're starting your John Muir Trail, even though you
- 9:28Speaker 2: go up eleven miles, then you don't count that your
- 9:30Speaker 2: start is up the hut, right, So went you're eleven
- 9:33Speaker 2: miles at the highest point is where you start. But
- 9:34Speaker 2: I started from Yusemite, went to the top and then
- 9:37Speaker 2: turned around and went back.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Did you plan on doing the double the yo yo?
- 9:41Speaker 1: Or was it just you got there and you're like,
- 9:42Speaker 1: I feel good, I'm going to keep dying, I know.
- 9:44Speaker 2: And born On born de Brun he acts like I
- 9:48Speaker 2: just made up I was going to turn around. I'm like,
- 9:50Speaker 2: who does that?
- 9:51Speaker 1: Because that's I mean, that's how I first became familiar
- 9:54Speaker 1: with you, like through through Bornier, which I read before
- 9:56Speaker 1: I got into all this whole world, and that kind
- 9:59Speaker 1: of put you on the map.
- 10:00Speaker 2: And yeah, a lot of people and it was before
- 10:02Speaker 2: all of our social media too, so like nobody, you know,
- 10:06Speaker 2: you didn't have all the Facebook and anything like that.
- 10:08Speaker 2: So you knew who these people were. And then when
- 10:10Speaker 2: that when the book came out, and then there was
- 10:11Speaker 2: Facebook later on, people were able to google like who
- 10:14Speaker 2: these characters were in this view. So yeah, and I
- 10:16Speaker 2: definitely want to do a triple. I know my double's
- 10:18Speaker 2: going to be broken. And so now I live in
- 10:20Speaker 2: Bishop and it's close enough to where I could do it,
- 10:23Speaker 2: and I've I tried to do it a few years
- 10:25Speaker 2: back and my uncle had passed away, so I had
- 10:27Speaker 2: to bell out at one. So I'm going to definitely
- 10:29Speaker 2: do a triple.
- 10:30Speaker 1: So Bishop's like in the middle of nowhere.
- 10:32Speaker 2: No, it's no, It's like right next to Mammoth. It's
- 10:35Speaker 2: a peak three ninety five thousands of people drive through
- 10:38Speaker 2: their day. They get like a thousand truckers driving through right,
- 10:41Speaker 2: So it's very popularhere though everywhere it's like climbers are
- 10:47Speaker 2: there in the winter because of all the bouldering buttermilk
- 10:49Speaker 2: boulders and all of this. And I have trail heads
- 10:52Speaker 2: like nineteen minute drive from my house. I'm up at
- 10:55Speaker 2: nine thousand feet and from there I can go right
- 10:58Speaker 2: out on the job your trial. I can go ten
- 11:00Speaker 2: miles up, ten miles down, and I'm on the John Mayretral.
- 11:03Speaker 1: That's pretty cool. But you we just recently moved there.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Right.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Where were you?
- 11:06Speaker 2: So the Bay area of Fremont near San So. I
- 11:09Speaker 2: was born and raised there and lived there pretty much
- 11:11Speaker 2: all my life. I was working at twelve Whole Foods
- 11:13Speaker 2: for nineteen years and I'm still seasonal with them. But
- 11:16Speaker 2: my boyfriend has been working for almost a year now
- 11:19Speaker 2: with See Your Life Flight and so he's a pilot,
- 11:22Speaker 2: not helicopter, but airplane. And so when you live on
- 11:25Speaker 2: live on the East Side to see ours, the ambulances
- 11:27Speaker 2: can't get you to a hospital fast enough. So that's
- 11:29Speaker 2: why we have air ambulance.
- 11:31Speaker 1: I say, that's interesting, the pilot.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Yeah, so yeah, because we're four hours three to four
- 11:36Speaker 2: three and a half to four hours from Reno and
- 11:37Speaker 2: then four hours from La So those are your closest
- 11:40Speaker 2: major hospitals. I mean, we have a hospital in Mammoth
- 11:42Speaker 2: and we have a hospital and Bishop. But if you
- 11:44Speaker 2: need any significant anything, he's due. He's the dude.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Yeah gets you.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Yep?
- 11:50Speaker 1: And uh are you able to like make all this
- 11:52Speaker 1: work on sponsor relations? Like do you can you make
- 11:56Speaker 1: a living doing this? How does that work? That's a
- 11:59Speaker 1: shame you should be.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Yeah, well, you know with my book, I'm hoping to
- 12:02Speaker 2: make some money on that, and speaking and stuff like
- 12:05Speaker 2: that will definitely help. And I am I mean with
- 12:08Speaker 2: a lot of my sponsors. You know, it's like they
- 12:10Speaker 2: give you discount codes, and the more you sell, the
- 12:12Speaker 2: you know, if people are going through your avenues and
- 12:14Speaker 2: selling buying stuff, you get money. So I'm actually making money,
- 12:18Speaker 2: a bit of money.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I got it.
- 12:19Speaker 2: I guess I could live on it.
- 12:20Speaker 1: I mean, my boyfriend, it depends on how you want
- 12:22Speaker 1: to live. I live by myself.
- 12:23Speaker 2: I'd be living on the street. No.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Well, I want to drill into the details of the
- 12:28Speaker 1: racing and the training and how you live your life
- 12:30Speaker 1: and all of that. But I want to go back
- 12:32Speaker 1: to the beginning because what got you here is so bananas.
- 12:37Speaker 1: So so you you're born and raised in Fremont, Yes,
- 12:42Speaker 1: and walk me through, give me a little taste of
- 12:45Speaker 1: your childhood.
- 12:46Speaker 2: So I was such a girly girl, didn't even like
- 12:49Speaker 2: getting dirt on me, always in dresses and patent their
- 12:52Speaker 2: little shiny shoes, and so my parents. I love dance.
- 12:55Speaker 2: That was my thing when I was growing up. I
- 12:57Speaker 2: love taking dance lessons, tap dance, things like that, and
- 13:00Speaker 2: my parents always thought it was very quiet, and I
- 13:03Speaker 2: was always like with a book and kind of hiding
- 13:05Speaker 2: and to myself, and they're like, well, we need to
- 13:07Speaker 2: put her in sports because she's like in team sports,
- 13:10Speaker 2: so she's more interactive with other kids, which I had
- 13:13Speaker 2: no desire to do. And I hated sports all together.
- 13:16Speaker 2: But my father was a soccer coach and my brother
- 13:18Speaker 2: played soccer who was younger, so I was forced into
- 13:21Speaker 2: playing soccer and softball and I absolutely hated it. I
- 13:25Speaker 2: hated running. I didn't want to run, and I didn't
- 13:27Speaker 2: want to sweat. I didn't want to get dirty. I
- 13:28Speaker 2: hated at all. I just wanted to take dance lessons,
- 13:31Speaker 2: but my parents felt this need to put me in
- 13:33Speaker 2: these other sports.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Were you were you always like an extrovert? Like were
- 13:37Speaker 1: you what we were in high school? Like who'd you
- 13:39Speaker 1: hang out with?
- 13:40Speaker 2: Yeah? That's all another day.
- 13:42Speaker 1: You were like rocking the crazy looks from the get go.
- 13:46Speaker 2: No, not when I was a little kid, but no,
- 13:47Speaker 2: once I hit junior high school, that's when I started changing.
- 13:51Speaker 2: So we started using drugs and drinking and things like that.
- 13:54Speaker 2: I had two older sisters, so I always was kind
- 13:57Speaker 2: of with the older crowd, hanging out with their friends.
- 13:59Speaker 2: But yeah, we moved when I was going into junior
- 14:02Speaker 2: high school, so I just kind of got into it
- 14:04Speaker 2: with the wrong crowd, like right off the bat, the
- 14:06Speaker 2: kids that I met and so started smoking.
- 14:09Speaker 1: And what was going on at home that you think
- 14:11Speaker 1: led to you to that, Nothing of that.
- 14:12Speaker 2: My parents were great, Yeah, there was nothing going on there.
- 14:16Speaker 2: My father was the president of Fremont City Soccer. I mean,
- 14:18Speaker 2: my brother played sports, and I just was being doing
- 14:23Speaker 2: my own thing, right.
- 14:24Speaker 1: Yeah, my s started gotten Wild Street Explore.
- 14:27Speaker 2: It was coming out. I was coming into my own
- 14:28Speaker 2: in staid. My two older sisters were gone now, so
- 14:31Speaker 2: I'm like my own person.
- 14:33Speaker 1: So junior high that started happening.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Ye started going out to discos, dance clubs, that whole thing.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Just at that time pretty much, you know.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Smoking cigarettes and smoking pot once in a while and
- 14:45Speaker 2: mostly drinking and just going like I said, to disco's
- 14:48Speaker 2: back then.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Yeah, well soccer dad, Soccer dad probably wasn't too happy
- 14:52Speaker 1: about that.
- 14:53Speaker 2: Well, you know, he was in his own thing with
- 14:55Speaker 2: my brother and the sports, you know, and I was
- 14:57Speaker 2: playing soccer at the time too, So it was and
- 15:00Speaker 2: until I got into junior high school that I was
- 15:01Speaker 2: just like, this is what I want to do. And
- 15:03Speaker 2: my father passed away at seven when I was seventeen,
- 15:06Speaker 2: and so that just put me like doing getting crazier, right,
- 15:10Speaker 2: you know, because my mom now had to deal with
- 15:12Speaker 2: me and my brother. My sisters were already older and
- 15:14Speaker 2: they were married and had their own families, and so
- 15:16Speaker 2: my brother. Then my brother was with my father when
- 15:19Speaker 2: my father died. So then my brother, who was it?
- 15:23Speaker 2: He didn't he didn't take it very well and it
- 15:25Speaker 2: took He ended up going into recovery when he was
- 15:28Speaker 2: like fifteen because he watched my father die. Tried to
- 15:32Speaker 2: save my father from having a massive heart attack at
- 15:34Speaker 2: forty nine years old. Yeah, and it was like he
- 15:37Speaker 2: was healthy. He ran, but he smoked, you know, and
- 15:39Speaker 2: he had quit smoking, but he ain't me and stuff
- 15:42Speaker 2: like that. But it's not genetic. His his parents lived
- 15:45Speaker 2: till their nineties. So but yeah, so.
- 15:47Speaker 1: That set your brother off.
- 15:49Speaker 2: On that's my brother off, kind of set me off.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Then my mom was trying to focus on my brother
- 15:53Speaker 2: and I was just going off on my own and
- 15:56Speaker 2: then decided not to go to school, and my mom's
- 15:59Speaker 2: like you need to do something, because you can't just
- 16:01Speaker 2: not do, you know, go to school. You need to
- 16:03Speaker 2: pick something you want to do. So I went to
- 16:05Speaker 2: cosmetology school, and so I was doing that and still
- 16:08Speaker 2: like partying, going to the clubs.
- 16:10Speaker 1: And living at home still though, yep, living at home still.
- 16:12Speaker 2: And then I moved out after I graduated from cosmstology
- 16:15Speaker 2: school and got a job and started. I was living
- 16:18Speaker 2: with a boyfriend of mine and his family, and we
- 16:21Speaker 2: were in and out of you know, it was a
- 16:23Speaker 2: horrible relationship, back and forth, breaking up, you know, just
- 16:26Speaker 2: he was in a band and I decided exactly was
- 16:31Speaker 2: no he was a lead singer. So then we kind of,
- 16:36Speaker 2: you know, he was cheating on me, and then I
- 16:38Speaker 2: met somebody else and I started cheating on him, and
- 16:40Speaker 2: so it was just easy enough to leave that relationship.
- 16:43Speaker 2: And so we had this huge blowout and I ended
- 16:45Speaker 2: up with this other guy. And this is not when
- 16:47Speaker 2: I was on drugs. I was still I was just
- 16:48Speaker 2: drinking a lot, and you know, drinking a lot, getting drunk,
- 16:52Speaker 2: you know, when i'd go out. And so this other
- 16:54Speaker 2: guy was a speed dealer, and at the time I
- 16:57Speaker 2: didn't know that because all my friends were like, don't
- 16:58Speaker 2: tell her that you do that. I would notice people
- 17:01Speaker 2: coming in and out of the house and leaving and
- 17:03Speaker 2: you know. And then finally one night we were going
- 17:04Speaker 2: to La to go to a golf club because I
- 17:06Speaker 2: was really big in the goth scene at this point,
- 17:09Speaker 2: and he you know, they were all doing speed and
- 17:11Speaker 2: I was like, I'll do some, you know. And so
- 17:14Speaker 2: I started from there and it was just like on
- 17:16Speaker 2: the weekends I would do it. And then at one
- 17:19Speaker 2: point I was I went to a lollapalooza with a
- 17:22Speaker 2: friend and she's I felt like shit, She's like, just
- 17:25Speaker 2: do some more and I'm like, no, no, no, I
- 17:26Speaker 2: only like to do it on the weekend, and she goes,
- 17:28Speaker 2: you'll feel better, and I was like, okay, so I'll
- 17:31Speaker 2: do it. So that moment was the turning point for
- 17:33Speaker 2: me to be like a major addict with it.
- 17:36Speaker 1: So are you talking about math?
- 17:38Speaker 2: Math?
- 17:38Speaker 1: So smoking math?
- 17:40Speaker 2: I was starting it, yeah, and my boyfriend at the
- 17:42Speaker 2: time was shooting it up, but I didn't even I
- 17:45Speaker 2: pretended like I didn't know was doing. In fact, I
- 17:51Speaker 2: was so into the drugs that I would pretend that
- 17:54Speaker 2: I was buying it for somebody else and use my
- 17:55Speaker 2: own money to buy more from him. He gave me
- 17:57Speaker 2: so much a day, but then I was doing my
- 18:00Speaker 2: amount that he was giving me and buying more from me.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Right wow. And and at the time were you partying
- 18:06Speaker 1: in Fremont or were you going.
- 18:08Speaker 2: To Francisco and all the goth clubs under their drug
- 18:12Speaker 2: six I mean, I just had all these fun.
- 18:14Speaker 1: So what what was it about the goth scene. I
- 18:16Speaker 1: just loved it connected.
- 18:17Speaker 2: With Yeah, I just loved.
- 18:18Speaker 1: The movie world, like I don't know anything about that.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Very you know, dark negative, Yeah, very depressing. And I
- 18:27Speaker 2: used to come to drive to l A a lot.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Because we n a lot of the cure.
- 18:31Speaker 2: But those guys never even did drugs. So it's like
- 18:33Speaker 2: you look at these bands. My boyfriend was in a
- 18:36Speaker 2: band at the time, so he was the lead singer
- 18:38Speaker 2: for a band and they called his band was called
- 18:42Speaker 2: Flesh to Go Go and they were opening for I'm
- 18:45Speaker 2: trying to remember they opened for My Life with the
- 18:47Speaker 2: Thrill Kill Cold a few times, and so you know,
- 18:49Speaker 2: it was that all that industrial kind of goth music.
- 18:52Speaker 1: So and and and what was the experience like of
- 18:56Speaker 1: of doing math for the first time?
- 18:58Speaker 2: It was like doing a bunch of coffee, like just
- 19:01Speaker 2: you know. It was like I felt like a conquer
- 19:03Speaker 2: the world. Like you when you do it, you're like, oh,
- 19:06Speaker 2: you know, just chatty, like how I am.
- 19:08Speaker 1: Confidence, yes, good energy, and then you just want to
- 19:12Speaker 1: keep doing it right, like you stay up for three
- 19:15Speaker 1: super creative.
- 19:16Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, I'm going to make stuff and get
- 19:18Speaker 2: crafty and make all.
- 19:19Speaker 1: I was always making that.
- 19:21Speaker 2: I was making outfits, like killer outfits. People were just
- 19:24Speaker 2: like so impressed with like what I was whipping up,
- 19:27Speaker 2: you know, And I didn't know anything about anything and
- 19:29Speaker 2: just started sewing and making really cool outfits. I always
- 19:32Speaker 2: wanted to have the coolest alf on in the club,
- 19:35Speaker 2: so that was my thing.
- 19:36Speaker 1: And what what what? What's the coming down part?
- 19:39Speaker 2: I like, you just get depressed and if you're already
- 19:42Speaker 2: suffering from mental illness, you know, which I didn't really
- 19:45Speaker 2: know at the time, but I had a lot of
- 19:46Speaker 2: that going on. It gets you know, you just got
- 19:49Speaker 2: to keep doing it to stay above that, you know,
- 19:51Speaker 2: so you don't have that come down. So I remember
- 19:54Speaker 2: at one point my boyfriend wanted to quit, and I
- 19:56Speaker 2: was like, oh, fuck, no, I can't quit. It means
- 20:00Speaker 2: I would have to quit and I'm not quitting, not quitting. Yeah.
- 20:03Speaker 2: I even came to a realization one day, just like
- 20:05Speaker 2: looking at myself, this is my life, this is have
- 20:08Speaker 2: to this is how it has to be.
- 20:10Speaker 1: And I delude yourself into thinking it's sustainable when it's not.
- 20:15Speaker 2: When it's not. Now, in the beginning, it's fun, but
- 20:17Speaker 2: once you really truly become an addict and there's no
- 20:20Speaker 2: fund anymore, you're just chasing your You're just chasing it. Yeah.
- 20:23Speaker 2: And when I watched shows about people like that, I
- 20:26Speaker 2: just think, God, I was right there. I understand that.
- 20:29Speaker 2: And it's sick. It's a sick world.
- 20:31Speaker 1: Did you get to that place where you're stealing it
- 20:34Speaker 1: and lying to people? And all that time, I had
- 20:36Speaker 1: a job.
- 20:36Speaker 2: I worked in hair salons.
- 20:38Speaker 1: You're always able to buy it on the up, but we.
- 20:40Speaker 2: Were selling it. Yeah, So we were small dealers getting
- 20:44Speaker 2: it and selling it to our friends. And then obviously
- 20:47Speaker 2: somebody told on us, and they didn't want to turn
- 20:50Speaker 2: in their their dealer because that was the big guy.
- 20:52Speaker 2: So they said that he had got it from us,
- 20:55Speaker 2: so that the cops in him made the phone call
- 20:57Speaker 2: and I answered the phone and did this all over
- 21:00Speaker 2: the phone. So two days later, knock knock, knock, busting
- 21:03Speaker 2: in the door comes.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Employee, and that becomes like your moment of reckoning, like
- 21:08Speaker 1: your your bottom with.
- 21:09Speaker 2: The wants to gel.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Sorry, I want to work my way up to that,
- 21:12Speaker 1: but I'm still I want to know more about this
- 21:15Speaker 1: phase of your life, like when when you kind of
- 21:18Speaker 1: when I was doing a little bit of research and
- 21:20Speaker 1: due diligence on you. I mean there's a lot of
- 21:22Speaker 1: you know, it paints this picture of a tremendous amount
- 21:26Speaker 1: of chaos. There's like there's incidents of sexual abuse, emotional abuse,
- 21:33Speaker 1: a string of like very unhealthy abusive relationships. There's there's
- 21:37Speaker 1: eating disorders thrown into there, there's O c D, there's
- 21:40Speaker 1: it's like it's a perfect mixture of like of like
- 21:44Speaker 1: all kinds of childhood and psychological trauma that contributes to it.
- 21:48Speaker 1: You know, that's all driving you towards this moment where
- 21:50Speaker 1: you end up in this jail. C.
- 21:51Speaker 2: Yeah, And so I was sexually abused as a child
- 21:54Speaker 2: by a family friend, and I kept that inside all
- 21:56Speaker 2: my life and my parents even asked did he touch
- 21:58Speaker 2: you in such a way? And when you're a little
- 22:00Speaker 2: kid and somebody tells you and you're you know, you're
- 22:02Speaker 2: you respect them and look up to them like you
- 22:04Speaker 2: better not say anything. Something bad's going to happen to you.
- 22:07Speaker 2: So then you're stuck. You lie to your parents, and
- 22:09Speaker 2: then you have nowhere to go, you know, And that
- 22:12Speaker 2: kind of I think set everything. How old I was nine,
- 22:17Speaker 2: so yeah, and.
- 22:18Speaker 1: A family friend or family friendly friend.
- 22:20Speaker 2: Was a relative, but he was always around our house.
- 22:22Speaker 2: It was my oldest sister's. He was like in her
- 22:24Speaker 2: wedding and like close friend. Like he was always at
- 22:27Speaker 2: our house. And it only happened the one time, but
- 22:29Speaker 2: that was that's enough to change your life.
- 22:31Speaker 1: And what's it like carrying that secret around for so long?
- 22:35Speaker 2: You know, shame, you're you're scared, and as you get older,
- 22:38Speaker 2: it's just like, oh, you know, it's comes up you
- 22:41Speaker 2: think about it. You know, trauma comes up in life
- 22:44Speaker 2: and the I just remember when I got clean us
- 22:47Speaker 2: over and when I finally was able to tell my
- 22:49Speaker 2: mom was the first time in my life I felt
- 22:51Speaker 2: so at ease, like knowing that I was able to
- 22:54Speaker 2: tell her finally after she had asked me when I
- 22:56Speaker 2: was younger and I lied lined She's like, why didn't
- 22:58Speaker 2: you you know? And it's like, yeah, she just didn't understand,
- 23:01Speaker 2: And I said, you don't understand, you know, And when
- 23:03Speaker 2: I told her when I was like twenty seven or whatever.
- 23:06Speaker 1: You've been like sober for like well like twenty five twenty.
- 23:08Speaker 2: Four years is going to be twenty five years in
- 23:10Speaker 2: or June twenty four, So I have to do something
- 23:12Speaker 2: really big.
- 23:13Speaker 1: So ninety six, ninety four, ninety four. Wow, yeah, long time.
- 23:19Speaker 1: But what is the like when you now with perspective
- 23:23Speaker 1: and not much time clean and sober, when you look
- 23:26Speaker 1: back on on that incident of sexual abuse, Like how
- 23:31Speaker 1: do you think about how that fuel like you're using,
- 23:36Speaker 1: Like what is the relationship between hiding drug use and
- 23:39Speaker 1: also like seeking out, you know, like the sort of
- 23:42Speaker 1: expression of like unhealthy you know, behaviors as a result
- 23:48Speaker 1: of like harboring that shame and feeling like you can't
- 23:50Speaker 1: tell anyone about it.
- 23:51Speaker 2: So yeah, I mean it was a constant like hiding it.
- 23:53Speaker 2: So if I drank and I was going to be
- 23:55Speaker 2: with somebody and had a boyfriend, I had to have sex.
- 23:57Speaker 2: It's like if you're drunk or you're not aware of
- 23:59Speaker 2: what's going on, it somehow feels better like you're not
- 24:02Speaker 2: you know, thinking about what happened to you because you, I.
- 24:05Speaker 1: Mean, you must have had intimacy issues, Like you're not
- 24:09Speaker 1: trusting people.
- 24:10Speaker 2: All the time. My life, Yeah not now now now
- 24:14Speaker 2: my boyfriend's so awesome. No, as an adult, I'm like,
- 24:18Speaker 2: you know, if people, if people, well, I was married
- 24:21Speaker 2: and cheated on me. So I'm like, if people are
- 24:23Speaker 2: gonna cheat, they're gonna cheat. They got an issue with themself,
- 24:25Speaker 2: you know. They if they can't just say hey, I
- 24:26Speaker 2: don't want to be with you anymore, that's perfectly fine.
- 24:29Speaker 2: I'm a big girl. I can accept it. But because
- 24:31Speaker 2: of his alcohol and drug abuse and whatever, that's well.
- 24:35Speaker 1: It's weird how childhood trauma manifests itself later in life
- 24:41Speaker 1: through the repetition of the pattern. Like you suffer this trauma,
- 24:44Speaker 1: and you would think psychologically you would do everything in
- 24:47Speaker 1: your power to move away from that type of social dynamic,
- 24:51Speaker 1: but you seek it out because for whatever bizarre reason,
- 24:55Speaker 1: there's a strange comfort in that or a familiarity.
- 24:58Speaker 2: I think so too. Just like a I said when
- 25:00Speaker 2: I was marrying my ex husband. He's nice. I mean,
- 25:03Speaker 2: I don't want to say anything bad about him, but
- 25:05Speaker 2: he wasn't for me. But he smoked pot and he
- 25:07Speaker 2: drank a lot. It's like, why would I get Why
- 25:10Speaker 2: would I go with somebody like that? Why would I
- 25:13Speaker 2: marry somebody like that? People were in shock. I mean
- 25:16Speaker 2: I met him in Knusementy was a climber, and he
- 25:19Speaker 2: just had this personality like charming fun and it was
- 25:23Speaker 2: right after my mom had passed away, and it just
- 25:25Speaker 2: like I connected with him. I just thought he was
- 25:28Speaker 2: like so fun and this, that and the other. And
- 25:30Speaker 2: twenty four days later I married so and I was
- 25:34Speaker 2: cleaning sober, there was nothing wrong with me.
- 25:37Speaker 1: And then how long have you been sober at that point?
- 25:41Speaker 2: Well that was in two thousand and two, so I've
- 25:43Speaker 2: got sober in nineteen eighty four. So I just wanted
- 25:45Speaker 2: to save him my gas. I mean, I don't know.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Yeah, it's something you'd give me an unconscious mind that
- 25:51Speaker 1: attracts you to that person. And often those negative behavior
- 25:57Speaker 1: patterns aren't necessarily manifest originally, like you're just like, oh,
- 26:00Speaker 1: they're awesome, Like they're nothing like that other person that
- 26:04Speaker 1: I'm trying to get away with you. But in you're
- 26:05Speaker 1: six months in and you're like, oh, they're exactly like
- 26:08Speaker 1: that person.
- 26:08Speaker 2: He was definitely a different person. And then he progressively.
- 26:12Speaker 2: I mean, if he was not living in Newsemone and climbing,
- 26:15Speaker 2: that was he was like just drinking and getting drunk
- 26:18Speaker 2: and just couldn't he couldn't stand being like controlled in
- 26:22Speaker 2: a controlled environment. He needed to be climbing. He was
- 26:25Speaker 2: a dirt bag. He need to be in the dirt, right.
- 26:28Speaker 1: And if you have an eating disorder, meth is awesome.
- 26:31Speaker 2: Oh yeah right, and I but my eating disorder really
- 26:34Speaker 2: came up big time after I got clean and sober.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Could just trying to find some control in something, and
- 26:40Speaker 2: it like I became vegan and it was just like
- 26:42Speaker 2: that was a good excuse to why I was getting
- 26:44Speaker 2: really thin, and so that went on for a few
- 26:47Speaker 2: more years, I mean all my life pretty much. You know,
- 26:49Speaker 2: it's like the pictures in the magazines, as all of
- 26:52Speaker 2: us women know, like growing up, it's like you have
- 26:54Speaker 2: this image of somebody, which is not true because I
- 26:56Speaker 2: have friends that are models and they don't look like
- 26:58Speaker 2: those pictures except for when there's a picture of them.
- 27:01Speaker 2: You know, it's like there's so much air brushing and
- 27:03Speaker 2: things going on, and and I like that nowadays they're
- 27:06Speaker 2: using more normal people average people, you know, so we
- 27:10Speaker 2: don't have to show our young girls like this is
- 27:13Speaker 2: how you should look when it's fake.
- 27:14Speaker 1: You know, it's changing, but but there's you know, a
- 27:17Speaker 1: lot of it is the same exactly.
- 27:19Speaker 2: You know.
- 27:20Speaker 1: And I think that that speaks to something that is
- 27:25Speaker 1: that is that that I see a lot of, which
- 27:28Speaker 1: is if you're an addict, an alcoholic, or you have
- 27:32Speaker 1: some kind of unhealthy predisposition, you can latch onto a
- 27:37Speaker 1: seemingly healthy thing like I'm going to be a raw
- 27:39Speaker 1: vegan or I'm going to be an ultra runner or
- 27:41Speaker 1: pick you know, behavior X, and you can shade your
- 27:45Speaker 1: unhealthy behavior under the umbrella of something that people will
- 27:49Speaker 1: socially approve of when you're when your relationship to that
- 27:53Speaker 1: thing is very unhealthy. Yeah, right, so you can. There's
- 27:57Speaker 1: tons of people in recovery and ultra running. There's a
- 27:59Speaker 1: reason for that exactly, you know what I mean, Like,
- 28:01Speaker 1: you can be very addictive in your training, and that's
- 28:04Speaker 1: been something that I've had to you know, evolve into, like,
- 28:08Speaker 1: am I what is my relationship with this? Am I hiding?
- 28:11Speaker 1: Is this making me a better person? Or am I
- 28:14Speaker 1: just using this as an outlet because I can't use
- 28:16Speaker 1: drugs and alcohol anymore.
- 28:18Speaker 2: Well, we kind of need something to take that we do.
- 28:20Speaker 1: It is healthier, but it can be yeah, yeah, and
- 28:25Speaker 1: you can be a raw vegan when when it's really
- 28:27Speaker 1: not about that. It's because you have an eating disorder
- 28:29Speaker 1: and this is a good way to like tell everybody
- 28:32Speaker 1: that you're doing something good for yourself when you're actually not. Yeah,
- 28:35Speaker 1: and so how do you like, like what is your
- 28:39Speaker 1: sort of history with all of that then?
- 28:40Speaker 2: So you know, the eating disorder was early on when
- 28:44Speaker 2: when I was running, so it just made sense like, oh,
- 28:46Speaker 2: she's getting skinnier because I was already thin. And then
- 28:48Speaker 2: you stop doing drugs and you start gaining. I was
- 28:51Speaker 2: normal way, it was like it was overweight. And then
- 28:54Speaker 2: I started running and I became vegan at the same time,
- 28:57Speaker 2: so then I realized I can control this. I was
- 28:59Speaker 2: eating like two apples a day. It was like ridiculous,
- 29:02Speaker 2: that's how controlling I was with what I was eating.
- 29:04Speaker 2: And it wouldn't eat in front of people. And my Mom's.
- 29:07Speaker 1: Like two apples a day, And how much are you running.
- 29:10Speaker 2: At that time? It was early on, but I was
- 29:11Speaker 2: still running like eighty miles a week. Yeah, I lived
- 29:18Speaker 2: on health.
- 29:19Speaker 1: That's the Christian Bale diet from that movie The Machinist,
- 29:22Speaker 1: where he got down to like one hundred pounds.
- 29:24Speaker 2: Yeah, well, if you want to get really thin. And
- 29:27Speaker 2: then I got to a point where I was exercising
- 29:29Speaker 2: so much. I was rollerblading to the gym one day
- 29:31Speaker 2: and rollerblading back and it was like one hundred degrees
- 29:34Speaker 2: out and I like passed out when I got home
- 29:37Speaker 2: and my mom's like, what the hell is running? And
- 29:39Speaker 2: I was like rollerblading working out in the gym and
- 29:42Speaker 2: I was like I don't know, and she's like, yeah,
- 29:44Speaker 2: that's not good. So I went to the doctor's and
- 29:47Speaker 2: she was like, do you have an eating disorder? And
- 29:49Speaker 2: I'm like no, I'm vegan.
- 29:52Speaker 1: Yeah, that's exactly what I'm talking about.
- 29:54Speaker 2: And it wasn't until I started training for Ultras that
- 29:58Speaker 2: I actually met a guy on the trail and he's
- 30:00Speaker 2: like you know. I was saying, how it's going to
- 30:02Speaker 2: do a hundred miler and he goes, you can't do
- 30:04Speaker 2: a hundred miler. He goes, you're too thin, and I
- 30:06Speaker 2: was like what. And it's dawned on me at that
- 30:10Speaker 2: point that like maybe there is something going on, and
- 30:13Speaker 2: I had went to the doctors and they saw like
- 30:15Speaker 2: I had a heart murmur, and I felt like I
- 30:17Speaker 2: was going to have a heart attack at some point.
- 30:18Speaker 2: And then I'm like thinking about my dad. I'm like, shit,
- 30:20Speaker 2: I'm gonna die, you know, And so it kind of
- 30:23Speaker 2: I kind of changed it and started reading more nutritional stuff,
- 30:26Speaker 2: like about nutrition and supplements and you know, having a
- 30:29Speaker 2: different relationship with food, like eating and taking supplements that
- 30:33Speaker 2: were going to nourish my body without eating the junk,
- 30:36Speaker 2: but still eating a ton more calories that I was
- 30:38Speaker 2: eating instead of apples and a few things, and eating
- 30:41Speaker 2: more stuff like you know, qin wan, adding other things.
- 30:43Speaker 2: And I changed it. You know, I helped myself. I mean,
- 30:47Speaker 2: and I did do a lot of reading up on it,
- 30:49Speaker 2: like anarexia and stuff, and back then I was really
- 30:52Speaker 2: self help, you know, early on in recovery, reading every
- 30:54Speaker 2: book I could, and I thought, yeah, this is this
- 30:57Speaker 2: is going to take me out like the drugs took
- 30:59Speaker 2: me out, and just reading people's stories and books that
- 31:02Speaker 2: I had gotten a couple of books and I was
- 31:03Speaker 2: just like, yeah, I don't want I don't even remember
- 31:06Speaker 2: the name of it. But it was a woman two
- 31:08Speaker 2: of them were by women that wrote about their their
- 31:11Speaker 2: times of anorexia and stuff. It was in Barnes and Nobles.
- 31:13Speaker 2: I just happened to be looking and got books on
- 31:16Speaker 2: eating disorders.
- 31:17Speaker 1: All right, so you make this mess sale over the
- 31:21Speaker 1: phone and you get busted and you end up in jail.
- 31:24Speaker 2: That was scary.
- 31:25Speaker 1: Yeah, it was just how long were you in jail?
- 31:27Speaker 2: For like less than two days? But I was in overnight,
- 31:31Speaker 2: which I didn't think. The cop told me, oh, it
- 31:33Speaker 2: won't be in overnight. And so when I'm going in
- 31:36Speaker 2: and I'm going through the process and you're sitting like
- 31:38Speaker 2: in a lobby, I mean, I have never been to jail,
- 31:40Speaker 2: so I was just thinking all bars in this. But
- 31:42Speaker 2: it was like the waiting room at the airport or something.
- 31:45Speaker 2: And this is just from what I can remember. It
- 31:49Speaker 2: was in uh it was a woman's correctional feel facility
- 31:52Speaker 2: and mil pedis so it's called Elmwood and so in
- 31:56Speaker 2: San Jose is where they took the men to that
- 31:58Speaker 2: gel and Elmwood was for the females. And so there's
- 32:01Speaker 2: a lot of interesting people in there. Just remember, you know,
- 32:04Speaker 2: here's me all gothed out and and just going in
- 32:07Speaker 2: through the whole process and where they strip you down
- 32:09Speaker 2: and just they treat you like shit, I mean cause
- 32:11Speaker 2: you're a criminal, I guess in their eyes. And I'm
- 32:13Speaker 2: just like, I'm not supposed to be here really, and
- 32:17Speaker 2: they're like, just get over here, you know. And the
- 32:18Speaker 2: whole time I'm like, well, they're they're I'm not supposed
- 32:21Speaker 2: to be here. They're gonna let me out. They should
- 32:22Speaker 2: be letting me out now.
- 32:23Speaker 1: Yeah, don't you know who I think I am?
- 32:25Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. And so even the guy that took my photo,
- 32:28Speaker 2: so I worked in a hair salon in Downtown Center,
- 32:30Speaker 2: was he who was one of my clients.
- 32:32Speaker 1: So that was just the guy who worked in the
- 32:34Speaker 1: jail that.
- 32:34Speaker 2: Took you alreadyknew.
- 32:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:36Speaker 2: It was just like, oh god, you know, just so embarrassing,
- 32:40Speaker 2: you know, to have been going through this and out
- 32:42Speaker 2: here's a person that knows who I am and knows
- 32:44Speaker 2: what I'm going through. And it was a dark time
- 32:48Speaker 2: and so going in, like they hand me the clothing
- 32:51Speaker 2: to put on, like after you know, I'm in there
- 32:53Speaker 2: for several hours before they even do that, and I'm like, no,
- 32:55Speaker 2: I'm not supposed to stay here, and They're like, yeah,
- 32:57Speaker 2: you're going into whatever with the rest of the people.
- 33:00Speaker 2: So you get your outfit on your flip flops and
- 33:03Speaker 2: you know, nothing fit. It was like all falling off
- 33:05Speaker 2: of me. I was so skinny and march us all
- 33:07Speaker 2: in and you know. And I remember the cops telling me,
- 33:10Speaker 2: he goes, if you do get in there, I'll make
- 33:12Speaker 2: sure that they put you in a cell by yourself.
- 33:15Speaker 2: So I did end up in a cell by myself.
- 33:17Speaker 2: And so when I went into the you know, and
- 33:18Speaker 2: I'm crying. I'm just like, I don't belong here. I
- 33:20Speaker 2: don't belong here. And there was like it's like a mirror.
- 33:23Speaker 2: It's not really a mirror, it's a piece of sheet metal,
- 33:25Speaker 2: you know, because you don't want you to cut yourself
- 33:26Speaker 2: cut somebody with them breaking a mirror. And so I'm
- 33:29Speaker 2: just looking at myself in this thing and thinking what
- 33:31Speaker 2: am I? What am I doing here? How did I
- 33:34Speaker 2: get here? This is, you know, my whole life. I'm
- 33:36Speaker 2: just thinking, oh my god, this is not who I am.
- 33:39Speaker 2: And so it dawned at me I need to do something,
- 33:42Speaker 2: I need to change. So I remember sitting on the
- 33:45Speaker 2: bed and laying down and it's like these fully blankets.
- 33:47Speaker 2: In fact, they use them at two hundreds, and I
- 33:49Speaker 2: won't put.
- 33:49Speaker 1: Those blankets on me.
- 33:50Speaker 2: I'm like at the sleep station, I'm.
- 33:51Speaker 1: Like, me, I don't want to go to jail. That's
- 33:55Speaker 1: an interesting thing. But this is the same blanket, but
- 33:59Speaker 1: my life them.
- 34:01Speaker 2: So, I mean, I had a crew this time, so
- 34:03Speaker 2: I'm in my car with my you know, at the
- 34:04Speaker 2: sleep stations with my sleeping bag out. No, those things
- 34:08Speaker 2: freak me out, and there's times like literally I'm freaked out.
- 34:11Speaker 2: I'm like, get that thing away from me.
- 34:13Speaker 1: But those are kind of cool got shots too, because
- 34:15Speaker 1: you're like, oh, this is it's such a vivid, tactile
- 34:19Speaker 1: like memory that takes you back, that makes you remember.
- 34:23Speaker 2: Where everyone to be there again, so I know what
- 34:26Speaker 2: I need to do not to ever ever be there.
- 34:27Speaker 1: It's like it's like a relapse stream.
- 34:29Speaker 2: Yes, and you're awake and everything's a relapse stream, and
- 34:33Speaker 2: then you're awake for a hundred. Yeah.
- 34:35Speaker 1: So uh so you have this moment, you make this decision,
- 34:41Speaker 1: and so that was it.
- 34:43Speaker 2: Well yeah, you know, I mean it. They assigned me
- 34:46Speaker 2: a public defender, so I had to go to court
- 34:48Speaker 2: right away, and so I got out the next So
- 34:50Speaker 2: they were going to charge me with everything. My boyfriend
- 34:53Speaker 2: got charged for selling possession, like everything, and he kept
- 34:57Speaker 2: trying to take the blame, saying, no, she had nothing
- 34:59Speaker 2: to do with it, although I was the one that
- 35:01Speaker 2: sold in on the phone. But he was taking all
- 35:04Speaker 2: the blame when they came in and raided the house
- 35:05Speaker 2: and all that, and he showed him where we cooperated.
- 35:08Speaker 2: But he's like, just you know, she's never been in trouble.
- 35:10Speaker 2: You know, he had been in trouble before. And they
- 35:13Speaker 2: saw that, and the judge saw that, and I was
- 35:14Speaker 2: talking with my attorney and he goes. He goes, usually
- 35:17Speaker 2: that you're going to charge the female with the same
- 35:19Speaker 2: amount of crime as their boyfriend or whatever, and he goes,
- 35:22Speaker 2: but he goes, he might be nice to you and
- 35:26Speaker 2: we'll see where you have a job? You have you know,
- 35:29Speaker 2: you've never been in trouble. So with that, he went
- 35:31Speaker 2: in front of them and said, you know, she has
- 35:34Speaker 2: a job, she'll go into drug diversion, she'll go to meetings.
- 35:37Speaker 2: And so then he said, okay, let's see, let's put
- 35:40Speaker 2: her into an outpatient program. Go to NA and AA
- 35:44Speaker 2: every day, either one of them, and get the paper signed.
- 35:47Speaker 2: And I was checking back every two weeks and so
- 35:49Speaker 2: I was going and this went on for three months
- 35:53Speaker 2: to six months, and then they finally was off a
- 35:55Speaker 2: drug diversion after six months with no record. They let
- 35:59Speaker 2: all of that go.
- 36:00Speaker 1: So no felony charge. Yeah, and they didn't try to
- 36:03Speaker 1: roll you into you know, trying to get somebody above you,
- 36:08Speaker 1: try to cut a deal like no.
- 36:10Speaker 2: See, that's why the guy that turned us in that
- 36:13Speaker 2: he pretended like we were the big wigs. We didn't know. Yeah,
- 36:16Speaker 2: they couldn't do anything because Jason was going to tell
- 36:19Speaker 2: him where he got it. So he was fine with
- 36:21Speaker 2: going to jail, and he did.
- 36:22Speaker 1: He had.
- 36:24Speaker 2: He spent three months in jail and then three months
- 36:26Speaker 2: house house arrest. So and he got his thing wherever
- 36:30Speaker 2: they wipe your slate clean years later. I mean he's
- 36:33Speaker 2: been in clean and sober for all these years too.
- 36:36Speaker 1: So yeah, so court ordered to an a an AA.
- 36:40Speaker 2: Yep, how that interesting? You know. I was in downtown
- 36:43Speaker 2: San Jose, so there was a lot of gang ex
- 36:45Speaker 2: gang members and my.
- 36:46Speaker 1: Means and I was just get that court card signed.
- 36:48Speaker 2: Yeah, but I just was like feeling like I did nothing.
- 36:51Speaker 2: You know, My what I got arrested for was nothing
- 36:54Speaker 2: compared to what these people see on a daily basis
- 36:56Speaker 2: and how they were raised, and you know, but they're
- 36:59Speaker 2: in recovery too and trying to better their self. But
- 37:01Speaker 2: I was just like, my god, I can't even talk
- 37:03Speaker 2: because I don't have I'm just like this white chick
- 37:05Speaker 2: that so up. She got you know, she's hanging out
- 37:08Speaker 2: in the clubs and she got it rested like my
- 37:09Speaker 2: story didn't matter, and so did you.
- 37:13Speaker 1: But did you embrace or accept the fact that you
- 37:16Speaker 1: were an addict or an al alcoholic or just somebody
- 37:18Speaker 1: who got in trouble?
- 37:19Speaker 2: No, no, I knew.
- 37:20Speaker 1: I was what's the what's the relationship between the myth
- 37:24Speaker 1: and the booze?
- 37:25Speaker 2: Like? Wells actually really drinking after I stopped drinking pretty
- 37:29Speaker 2: much when I started doing math, because you don't really
- 37:32Speaker 2: get drunk anyways, and I'd rather.
- 37:33Speaker 1: Do the math unless you want to go to sleep.
- 37:36Speaker 2: But then after I did get arrested, I was drinking
- 37:39Speaker 2: for a little bit a couple of months after that,
- 37:41Speaker 2: until they were like, no, you're not supposed to drink
- 37:42Speaker 2: at all either. So that's why from the time I
- 37:46Speaker 2: got arrested until June twenty fourth is my actually sobriety day.
- 37:48Speaker 2: Because I was still drinking here and there when it
- 37:51Speaker 2: went out on occasion, but I wasn't doing drugs.
- 37:54Speaker 1: And clean and sober ever since.
- 37:55Speaker 2: Yeah, June twenty fourth is my day.
- 37:57Speaker 1: But like as not really your thing, right, oh.
- 38:00Speaker 2: You know I and I appreciate that. People that helps said,
- 38:03Speaker 2: my brother goes Days has been off and on for years,
- 38:05Speaker 2: back and forth into recovery. Now he's been in it
- 38:08Speaker 2: for a long time, and he it's a great tool.
- 38:10Speaker 2: I would say, I think that's you know, the main
- 38:13Speaker 2: thing of starting my recovery was that, But then going
- 38:16Speaker 2: to therapy really helped me more because I felt like
- 38:18Speaker 2: I just had deeper issues and you know, I, you know,
- 38:23Speaker 2: I just it's hard for me to sit around and
- 38:25Speaker 2: just listen to the same stories over and over when
- 38:27Speaker 2: I would just want to move forward in life. And
- 38:30Speaker 2: I like talking about my past because it helps people.
- 38:32Speaker 2: But it's like I have so much more in front
- 38:34Speaker 2: of me that it's like, here's what this is what
- 38:36Speaker 2: I did. Let's keep going, you know, let's talk about
- 38:38Speaker 2: the future. Let's talk about good things we can keep doing.
- 38:41Speaker 2: You know, it's like when people say I want to
- 38:43Speaker 2: do this, that and the other, but I can't do it,
- 38:46Speaker 2: and I you know, I'll wait a couple of months
- 38:47Speaker 2: and I'm like, no, do it now. You might not
- 38:49Speaker 2: be here tomorrow, you know. So but it definitely helped me.
- 38:53Speaker 2: But I just you know, I prefer going to the
- 38:55Speaker 2: mountains as my church and praying and just thinking, and
- 38:57Speaker 2: that's where I do all my thinking. I like running
- 38:59Speaker 2: alone and seeing so much. And you know, I take
- 39:02Speaker 2: something away every time I'm out in the mountains and
- 39:04Speaker 2: just running on the streets like a bird of this that,
- 39:07Speaker 2: And I just am grateful.
- 39:08Speaker 1: That's your church, that's your AA meeting. Yep. It is yeah,
- 39:12Speaker 1: interesting because for me, I mean that's a huge part
- 39:16Speaker 1: of my sobriety and my recovery. But for me, like
- 39:22Speaker 1: that's not enough. Like I still like I go to
- 39:24Speaker 1: a you know, like I'm part of the recovery community.
- 39:26Speaker 1: And I think now people sometimes get confused. They know
- 39:31Speaker 1: my story and they think like, oh, well, I put
- 39:34Speaker 1: the drugs in the alcohol behind me, and now I'm
- 39:36Speaker 1: just going to train and like that's sobriety. And it's like, no,
- 39:39Speaker 1: that's not like at least for me, Like I'm only
- 39:42Speaker 1: speaking for myself, that's not enough. That's I know from
- 39:46Speaker 1: firsthand experience that I need something that I need a
- 39:49Speaker 1: more structured program. Beyond that, that's a contributing factor that
- 39:53Speaker 1: keeps me in line. But for me, I need to
- 39:57Speaker 1: have a connection with a higher power. I need a
- 39:59Speaker 1: spiritual program. You'd be of service to other alcoholic and
- 40:01Speaker 1: we're still sick and all of that, you know, or
- 40:04Speaker 1: I'll go sideways pretty quickly.
- 40:05Speaker 2: Yeah, and thank god, I've never wanted to go, So yeah,
- 40:10Speaker 2: I guess. And I look at me now and I think, well,
- 40:13Speaker 2: that makes perfect sense because look at how much I
- 40:15Speaker 2: get into something. It's like my mind goes and it's
- 40:18Speaker 2: like I ain't doing that anymore.
- 40:19Speaker 1: That's it. But that's very alcoholic, you know that, right,
- 40:22Speaker 1: That ability to focus, it's like harnessing the best of
- 40:25Speaker 1: what it means to be like that kind of human
- 40:28Speaker 1: being and channeling it in the right direction. Right, I
- 40:31Speaker 1: think I think alcoholics and addicts are. Look, they're incredibly
- 40:34Speaker 1: crafty and focused people. Like when you're, as you said,
- 40:37Speaker 1: like when you're using, like you're there is no way
- 40:40Speaker 1: you're not going to find that meth that day, no
- 40:42Speaker 1: matter what it takes, it's going to happen to right,
- 40:45Speaker 1: And then if you can take that level of intensity
- 40:49Speaker 1: and place it in a healthy direction, then the world
- 40:51Speaker 1: explodes in a good way. Yeah. So all right, so
- 40:55Speaker 1: you get out, you're sober, you're doing the whole deal.
- 40:59Speaker 1: When does the running?
- 41:00Speaker 2: So the running doesn't stop starting until two years later.
- 41:03Speaker 2: So I'm, you know, working out in a gym. I'm
- 41:05Speaker 2: getting healthy. So I'm doing things and like I said,
- 41:08Speaker 2: eating healthy, and.
- 41:10Speaker 1: It was interesting, the vegan thing.
- 41:13Speaker 2: So actually I became a vegetarian when I was nine.
- 41:16Speaker 2: We raised animals, so we we didn't want on a farm. So,
- 41:20Speaker 2: like I said, my dad always had stuff going on,
- 41:22Speaker 2: so he bought like nine head of cattle. And my
- 41:24Speaker 2: sisters were in f FA, which is Future Farmers of America,
- 41:27Speaker 2: and I was younger, so I was in four H.
- 41:29Speaker 2: They put me in the four H program, and I
- 41:31Speaker 2: had a lamb and we had the stairs. And so
- 41:35Speaker 2: before I ended up getting the lamb, we had the
- 41:38Speaker 2: nine had a cattle. And then they grew up and
- 41:40Speaker 2: they went away, they got sold, and there was one
- 41:43Speaker 2: still on the ranch, and I named him Charlie. My
- 41:45Speaker 2: parents used to always say, don't name those those are
- 41:47Speaker 2: not pets. Don't name those animals. Looking at wars and stuff,
- 41:51Speaker 2: and I was like, well, his name's Charlie. He's white
- 41:53Speaker 2: and he's named Charlie, and that's what I'm calling him.
- 41:55Speaker 2: And I go up to him and hug him and whatever.
- 41:59Speaker 2: So then all the other ones were gone and Charlie
- 42:01Speaker 2: was still there. And then he went away. And the day,
- 42:05Speaker 2: like within a few days, I come home from school
- 42:07Speaker 2: and my brother opens up the freezer. We had a
- 42:09Speaker 2: meat freezer in the garage and he's all, look, Charlie's
- 42:11Speaker 2: in the freezer. And that was it. And and it
- 42:18Speaker 2: was devastating to me when I see it's so funny.
- 42:20Speaker 2: I was just at the fair and I saw these
- 42:22Speaker 2: girls like with little lambs and stuff, and I was like,
- 42:24Speaker 2: oh my god, they don't understand what's going to happen
- 42:26Speaker 2: to their animal. You raise these. So yeah, Charlie was
- 42:29Speaker 2: in the freezer. And I told my mom, I'm not
- 42:31Speaker 2: eating anything out of there. I'm not eating a hamburger
- 42:33Speaker 2: ever again. And she didn't force me to. I mean,
- 42:36Speaker 2: she was Italian, so she would take the sausage out
- 42:38Speaker 2: or the you know whatever, the meat ball. And so
- 42:41Speaker 2: even though there was meat sauce in there or whatever,
- 42:43Speaker 2: it was a connection that I had, but as long
- 42:45Speaker 2: as there was no meat a hamburger, Like I didn't
- 42:46Speaker 2: eat a hamburger when I went to McDonald's. I would
- 42:49Speaker 2: eat fish and chicken growing up, But so then my lamb.
- 42:52Speaker 2: You know, I was eating lamb still, I think until
- 42:54Speaker 2: that point to the following year, when I went to
- 42:56Speaker 2: the fair once again, had my little lamb auctioned it
- 42:59Speaker 2: off all excited, and this boy said to me, you know,
- 43:02Speaker 2: they're gonna somebody's gonna eat him, and I was like, no,
- 43:05Speaker 2: they're not. And then I thought, oh my god, Charlie,
- 43:08Speaker 2: my lamb, Like I thought somebody was just going to
- 43:10Speaker 2: keep him for a pet. Like I did, you know,
- 43:12Speaker 2: it wasn't a connection because I just walked down ten
- 43:15Speaker 2: and so I just went off. I just started bawling,
- 43:19Speaker 2: and I ran to the pen where he was and
- 43:21Speaker 2: I just laid in there, and my dad came and
- 43:22Speaker 2: found me, and he's like, no, no, no, they're going
- 43:25Speaker 2: to keep him for a stud. And I think, you know,
- 43:27Speaker 2: I don't know this is the real story, but I'm
- 43:28Speaker 2: sure my dad told the guy, like, go tell her,
- 43:30Speaker 2: we're not going to need him, you know, I don't know.
- 43:33Speaker 2: So he came over he goes, no, no, no, We're
- 43:35Speaker 2: going to keep him for a stud And I was like,
- 43:37Speaker 2: I don't know what that is, but right, so there
- 43:41Speaker 2: went lambs. So so a young age, I was very
- 43:44Speaker 2: aware of stuff and I'm very sensitive towards animals growing up.
- 43:48Speaker 2: And you know, I had a duck and my brother
- 43:49Speaker 2: killed my duck. And just like you know, he's.
- 43:52Speaker 1: A relationship with Truman right now, he's like on a
- 43:56Speaker 1: whole other level. I love those dog owners. Yeah, sup
- 44:00Speaker 1: that you didn't bring.
- 44:01Speaker 2: I know, No, I'm feeling really bad.
- 44:02Speaker 1: I should have For people that are listening or watching.
- 44:05Speaker 2: Well, they're probably mad that I didn't bring.
- 44:06Speaker 1: Yeah, they're like, we're I mean, your dog's like famous, Yeah,
- 44:10Speaker 1: more human's like twelve or thirteen.
- 44:13Speaker 2: Now he's going he's twelve years seven months. So he's
- 44:15Speaker 2: getting up there. And I've only had him for six
- 44:17Speaker 2: and a half year as I rescued him.
- 44:18Speaker 1: Right, and uh, what kind of dog is he?
- 44:21Speaker 2: A miniature Dockson.
- 44:22Speaker 1: Docson and uh and he's run ultra five fifty k's
- 44:27Speaker 1: five fifty ks on those.
- 44:29Speaker 2: Tiny legs legs nine pounds can run fifty k starting
- 44:33Speaker 2: at six and a half ran his first fifty k at.
- 44:35Speaker 1: Seven, and you trained him like you would train a human. Right,
- 44:38Speaker 1: just started very slow and he just was fun. I
- 44:41Speaker 1: can't believe a little dog like that can run.
- 44:43Speaker 2: A fifty k. And there's people emailing me that have
- 44:46Speaker 2: wiener dogs.
- 44:47Speaker 1: Do they do? You get people angry at you, like
- 44:50Speaker 1: this is abuse or what they have.
- 44:51Speaker 2: But I have. I mean my doctor, my vet is
- 44:55Speaker 2: he's like VET approved. And I have friends that are
- 44:57Speaker 2: altrunners that are vets, and they said, we are in
- 45:00Speaker 2: veterinarian school that these guys have all these back issues
- 45:03Speaker 2: and they're like, we never think they could run because
- 45:06Speaker 2: they have back issues. Well, the back issue can't happen
- 45:08Speaker 2: from running, it happens from jumping, and it makes perfect
- 45:11Speaker 2: sense to have them run low to the ground, keeping
- 45:14Speaker 2: them thinner and just getting them checked. And it's like
- 45:17Speaker 2: he just happens to be an amazing little guy and
- 45:20Speaker 2: he has always been fed approved. I've had full body
- 45:23Speaker 2: X rays. I mean, it's not like I'm just some
- 45:25Speaker 2: crazy lady lay my dog run. And I knew that
- 45:27Speaker 2: people would come out of the woodwork and try to
- 45:29Speaker 2: say stuff, and it's like I got proof. I have
- 45:32Speaker 2: vets that approve of him doing this, and now he
- 45:35Speaker 2: has gotten older and he has a heart murmur, so
- 45:36Speaker 2: we've tapered him back to ten miles at the.
- 45:38Speaker 1: Most, ten miles at the most. Yeah, and with those
- 45:41Speaker 1: tiny little legs. I mean, if you broke it down
- 45:43Speaker 1: by strides, I mean, the fifty k is probably like
- 45:46Speaker 1: a two hundred miles, you know what I mean. And
- 45:50Speaker 1: what's the deal with the you put like ski goggles on?
- 45:53Speaker 2: Yes, Well, he's had eye injuries and thousands of dollars,
- 45:56Speaker 2: like his surgery on his eyes because he's low to
- 45:58Speaker 2: the ground running trails poky things, or right on the
- 46:01Speaker 2: trail eye level, so he had one of his corner
- 46:05Speaker 2: has got really scratched and he had to have surgery
- 46:07Speaker 2: on it. And that's the eye that usually has problems.
- 46:10Speaker 2: And he has eye drops for the rest of his
- 46:12Speaker 2: life because he doesn't make tears. And so my vet's
- 46:14Speaker 2: like the best thing you can do, because I swear
- 46:17Speaker 2: like every six months. It was like a major eye issue.
- 46:20Speaker 2: And the last one was last year at Tahoe two hundred.
- 46:23Speaker 2: We were sweeping the course, me and him were pulling
- 46:24Speaker 2: the ribbons and he was with me and I had
- 46:26Speaker 2: these trekking poles and it had a sharp point and
- 46:29Speaker 2: he ran into the point and scratched his eye again,
- 46:31Speaker 2: and it took three months for it to hill. So
- 46:33Speaker 2: finally we're like, okay, we gotta gotta do. You know.
- 46:36Speaker 2: He started with the regular little doggle ones that were
- 46:39Speaker 2: individual like glasses, and he would wear them, but the
- 46:42Speaker 2: minute you stopped, they were off and they were ruined.
- 46:44Speaker 2: And so a friend of mine, actually, she's like, there's
- 46:47Speaker 2: this company called Respecs that makes these really cool goggles.
- 46:50Speaker 2: But at the time they didn't make extra small. They
- 46:52Speaker 2: were only making small, so they were way too big.
- 46:54Speaker 1: Four dogs, though, four are for They are specifically sphysically
- 46:58Speaker 1: for dogs.
- 46:59Speaker 2: Oh yeah, like lot.
- 47:00Speaker 1: Of because a thing for dogs wear them.
- 47:03Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a thing.
- 47:04Speaker 1: Truman's the only dog I've ever.
- 47:06Speaker 2: Seen looks them up and there I know, I'm you know,
- 47:09Speaker 2: because dogs get damaged just from the sun, just like
- 47:12Speaker 2: we do. That's why you hear so many dogs of
- 47:13Speaker 2: having like like coma and these certain things from our
- 47:17Speaker 2: cataracts from the sun and stuff. And it makes sense.
- 47:20Speaker 2: But like I said, he's always gotten scratched and so
- 47:22Speaker 2: these these are so much better. He doesn't have the
- 47:25Speaker 2: gunk like it was constantly cleaning gunk and he doesn't
- 47:28Speaker 2: mind if I stop. Then he wants him off when
- 47:30Speaker 2: he's done, So he knows when they come on, Like
- 47:33Speaker 2: I won't put him on a road run, you know,
- 47:34Speaker 2: because it's like let him not have to wear them.
- 47:36Speaker 2: But definitely on the trail there's so much to breathe
- 47:38Speaker 2: that gets in his eyes.
- 47:39Speaker 1: And do you have a leash when you're running with him?
- 47:41Speaker 1: Or does he so when we're.
- 47:42Speaker 2: Off trail, we don't need to like on places where
- 47:45Speaker 2: you don't need to have a leash. No, he's not
- 47:46Speaker 2: a nice yeah on the trail.
- 47:47Speaker 1: What happens when you have the occasional like rattlesnake encounter or.
- 47:51Speaker 2: He's always behind me, so he doesn't He's not ever
- 47:54Speaker 2: been one to run like way in front of me,
- 47:56Speaker 2: so which is good because most people are like, what
- 47:58Speaker 2: do you do? And I'm like, we've never had that.
- 48:00Speaker 2: Probably he's like bee lined straight towards it at rattlesnake
- 48:03Speaker 2: when I jumped out of the way and I drive
- 48:06Speaker 2: and finally like he looked at me and I was
- 48:08Speaker 2: like able to grab him, like he was almost on
- 48:10Speaker 2: one on top of one that was coreled that would
- 48:14Speaker 2: have not been good because he's so little and if
- 48:16Speaker 2: he gets bit. I mean there's anti venom. But in
- 48:19Speaker 2: the Bay Area where it was at, it was like
- 48:21Speaker 2: forty minutes away for the anti for the dogs around here.
- 48:24Speaker 2: I'm sure you guys have it.
- 48:26Speaker 1: Yeah, it's still I mean, we lost a dog to
- 48:28Speaker 1: rattlesnake bites. Yeah, I know, it's it's it's a I mean,
- 48:32Speaker 1: it's serious how that happens. But I think that's totally cool.
- 48:36Speaker 1: Like I remember, it reminds me one time I did
- 48:38Speaker 1: the Alcatraz swam. This was like a long long time ago. Uh,
- 48:44Speaker 1: and the guy, the organizer of it, I think it
- 48:47Speaker 1: was on New Year's Day, like you do, like the
- 48:49Speaker 1: you know, on the coldest day or whatever. Of course,
- 48:51Speaker 1: but the organizer at the time, if memory serves me,
- 48:55Speaker 1: had a black lab and apparently this black like this
- 48:58Speaker 1: this lab, his favorite thing was to do this swim.
- 49:01Speaker 1: And he would do the swim from Alcatraz with everybody,
- 49:04Speaker 1: and he would beat half the field and he was
- 49:06Speaker 1: so excited, like running around the circles and then he'd
- 49:09Speaker 1: he'd you know, swim up out of the beach and
- 49:11Speaker 1: run around and like you know, lick everybody like it
- 49:14Speaker 1: was like he was like on fire. Yeah, and who
- 49:17Speaker 1: would have thought, like it's supposed to be. Oh, you know,
- 49:19Speaker 1: these prisoners could never make it out of Alcatraz and
- 49:22Speaker 1: like the dogs like out there, just like beating half
- 49:24Speaker 1: of these swimmers out there.
- 49:26Speaker 2: That's amazing. Yeah. I mean, animals are pretty amazing if
- 49:29Speaker 2: they find a passion and love like we do, if
- 49:32Speaker 2: they can do it, yeah, you know, And like I said,
- 49:34Speaker 2: I've never I've never got to a point where Truman
- 49:36Speaker 2: has laid down.
- 49:36Speaker 1: And been exhausted and said I can't go. Yeah.
- 49:39Speaker 2: No, I mean granted, like if Courtney owned him, he
- 49:41Speaker 2: would probably been dead. So I'm not like pushing him
- 49:45Speaker 2: like that.
- 49:46Speaker 1: Have you ever been in a race though, where he's
- 49:47Speaker 1: like I can't go anymore and you have to drop
- 49:50Speaker 1: out or whatever?
- 49:51Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, no, no. He's running in a
- 49:53Speaker 2: race when he gets a bib on and I take
- 49:55Speaker 2: him off leash. He's running with the other runners like
- 49:57Speaker 2: in front of me, and they're like, oh, oh no,
- 50:00Speaker 2: beating us. You know, that's when he runs in front
- 50:02Speaker 2: of me because he keeps thinking I'm up there, and
- 50:04Speaker 2: then he's like, oh, that's not her where did she go?
- 50:06Speaker 2: You know, isn't she coming? So yeah, when he when
- 50:08Speaker 2: he gets a bib on, he knows that's a different
- 50:11Speaker 2: thing that we're in a race.
- 50:12Speaker 1: It's so interesting.
- 50:13Speaker 2: Yeah, it's funny, all right.
- 50:15Speaker 1: So so where does the vegan thing come in? So
- 50:18Speaker 1: where do you make that switch?
- 50:19Speaker 2: So I was vegetarian already before I got clean and
- 50:22Speaker 2: sober and decided the day that I quit doing drugs
- 50:26Speaker 2: that me and my friend Katrina we're talking about, oh,
- 50:28Speaker 2: we're going to go vegan, and when we were on drugs,
- 50:31Speaker 2: we have these conversations about being vegan. So yeah, exactly,
- 50:36Speaker 2: So that was the perfect time I said, you know,
- 50:38Speaker 2: I'm not doing drugs anymore. I'm going vegan. So that's
- 50:41Speaker 2: when it all started. The same day that pretty much
- 50:44Speaker 2: I quit, you know, doing drugs, I quit eating meat.
- 50:48Speaker 1: What was that decision about for you though?
- 50:51Speaker 2: Just to get myself help again, to get like a
- 50:53Speaker 2: purification exactly. Yeah, like, I'm not doing that toxic stuff.
- 50:58Speaker 2: I'm going to get clean and sober and I'm gonna
- 51:01Speaker 2: be good. And I'm glad I did that helped. But
- 51:03Speaker 2: you know, there's unhealthy vegan there's eating a lot of sugar,
- 51:07Speaker 2: and crap that is not so healthy. And back then
- 51:10Speaker 2: it was mostly like you didn't have really almond milk
- 51:12Speaker 2: or stuff like that was mostly soy. And I have
- 51:14Speaker 2: a major intolerance with soy, Like I get major stomach
- 51:18Speaker 2: issues from a lot of soy. I can't do it,
- 51:20Speaker 2: so I try to avoid that. And back then it
- 51:22Speaker 2: was like mostly soy. Everything was soy tofu soy. And
- 51:25Speaker 2: it's like now we're it's so wonderful. We have all
- 51:27Speaker 2: this plant based you know, beyond me and like just great,
- 51:31Speaker 2: like without soy in it and or gluten and stuff,
- 51:35Speaker 2: for sure.
- 51:36Speaker 1: But it's also easier to be on an unhealthy vegan
- 51:39Speaker 1: with all the crazy you know, you can get all
- 51:41Speaker 1: the cupcakes and the whatever.
- 51:43Speaker 2: You know. I got a bunch of pastries over the.
- 51:45Speaker 1: Juicy ladies, right, yeah, ladies, the super healthy food they do.
- 51:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I love that good.
- 51:54Speaker 1: So you do that. And then but it's still a
- 51:56Speaker 1: spell before the running creation.
- 51:58Speaker 2: So two years so I'm we're out doing my thing
- 52:01Speaker 2: at the gym, and I went back to school. So
- 52:02Speaker 2: I had never graduated high school, so I went.
- 52:04Speaker 1: Through the adult school and I could have taken your cosmetologists.
- 52:08Speaker 1: At the time, I was just working part time.
- 52:10Speaker 2: So I moved back home to the Bayer, to Fremont
- 52:13Speaker 2: from San Jose and working part time. And I decided
- 52:15Speaker 2: I wanted to go back to school and get my
- 52:18Speaker 2: high school diploma, just like a normal person, like sit
- 52:20Speaker 2: back in the classroom. So I went through the adult program.
- 52:23Speaker 2: I could have taken my ged and got over it
- 52:25Speaker 2: and been out, but I thought, no, I'm going to
- 52:27Speaker 2: go back like where I should have been. And so
- 52:29Speaker 2: I was going to Cosmotopy. I mean, I was going
- 52:32Speaker 2: to adult school. And I was actually working at a
- 52:35Speaker 2: bagel store just part time, and then working in the
- 52:37Speaker 2: salon part time. And I was in the Barnes and
- 52:40Speaker 2: Nobles and there was a flyer. Well, actually, let me backtrack.
- 52:43Speaker 2: So I had this other little Wiener dog I used
- 52:45Speaker 2: to take for a walk, because I'll always hap Leen
- 52:47Speaker 2: our dogs, no troom, a pre you two room. And
- 52:50Speaker 2: this was Oscar Mayer Wiener, of course, so I was
- 52:56Speaker 2: I would take him on these three mile walks. And
- 52:58Speaker 2: one day I just out of nowhere. I don't know
- 53:00Speaker 2: what possessed me, but I'm like, I'm gonna run. I'm
- 53:03Speaker 2: gonna rent today, I'm gonna go out for rent and
- 53:05Speaker 2: not take him. So I went and I ran my
- 53:07Speaker 2: little route three miles and I was like, oh, I ran,
- 53:10Speaker 2: you know, and that was really cool. So I was
- 53:11Speaker 2: in Barnes and Nobles and there was a flyer in
- 53:13Speaker 2: the back of the store and there was a fire
- 53:15Speaker 2: for like five k ten k, and I was like, oh,
- 53:18Speaker 2: I'm gonna that's a ten k. I'm gonna run that
- 53:20Speaker 2: ten k. I only ran once, three miles and it
- 53:23Speaker 2: was in two weeks. And I asked my mom, I said,
- 53:25Speaker 2: do you want to walk the five k because she
- 53:27Speaker 2: walked every day, and She's like, yeah, I'll go. So
- 53:30Speaker 2: a couple of weeks after I started running, I entered
- 53:32Speaker 2: this ten k ran like no, didn't know a pace.
- 53:36Speaker 2: Thought I was going to pass out. I was still
- 53:37Speaker 2: in like wearing all black in that face still god face.
- 53:40Speaker 2: It was like hot out, did.
- 53:42Speaker 1: You have like the all black player and like white yeah,
- 53:45Speaker 1: white face.
- 53:46Speaker 2: And I was wearing all black and black shorts and
- 53:49Speaker 2: black sweatshirt and whatever. So I finished and I was like, wow,
- 53:53Speaker 2: you know, that was a big thing. And so I
- 53:55Speaker 2: got back to the vehicle and on our car there
- 53:57Speaker 2: was a flyer for the San Francisco Marathon and I
- 54:01Speaker 2: was like, when is this and I was like three months.
- 54:04Speaker 2: I'm like, how far is a marathon? I know it's far,
- 54:06Speaker 2: it's like twenty miles. And I had to call my
- 54:08Speaker 2: friend Kevin. I'm like, Kevin, do you know have our marathon?
- 54:10Speaker 2: I was, and he's like, yeah, twenty six miles point
- 54:12Speaker 2: two miles. And I said, I'm going to sign up
- 54:14Speaker 2: for it. So I sent my check in because that's
- 54:16Speaker 2: like pre anything computer stuff. So I sent it in
- 54:20Speaker 2: and I had three months to change, so I or train.
- 54:23Speaker 2: So I went into the Barnes and Nobles got a
- 54:25Speaker 2: book that said how to train for a marathon, had
- 54:28Speaker 2: to skip ahead to three months training program. And I
- 54:31Speaker 2: read that I was, you know, okay, Sunday nine mile
- 54:34Speaker 2: run and so there was no CHPs, garmans, none of this.
- 54:37Speaker 2: So I got in my little car odometer, drove four
- 54:41Speaker 2: and a half miles out and it was the gas
- 54:42Speaker 2: station and I was like, perfect, that's my turnaround tomorrow
- 54:45Speaker 2: and then I'll run back. So that's how I started
- 54:47Speaker 2: my training, that book for miles exactly, and just I
- 54:52Speaker 2: felt like I was it was, you know, I never
- 54:55Speaker 2: knew anybody other than my dad and my brother that
- 54:56Speaker 2: had run, and you know, so none of my friends ran,
- 54:59Speaker 2: and this was me just doing it for me, you know,
- 55:02Speaker 2: like finding my own way and so doing that, I
- 55:07Speaker 2: was just like wow. And like I said, I didn't
- 55:09Speaker 2: know anybody that brand marathons, and my family and friends
- 55:12Speaker 2: were like, whoa, you're crazy.
- 55:13Speaker 1: You know. But looking back on it now, like what
- 55:16Speaker 1: do you think that switch was that got flicked? Like
- 55:19Speaker 1: what is it about running that spoke to you?
- 55:22Speaker 2: I think it was it gave me confidence, and it
- 55:26Speaker 2: gave me a passion, something to strive for, so and
- 55:31Speaker 2: just I needed something like the struggle. I had no
- 55:35Speaker 2: going out to night clubs anymore.
- 55:37Speaker 1: I mean, you're sober for a couple of years. Yeah,
- 55:39Speaker 1: and I just felt to change your friends.
- 55:42Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what I'm saying. I was kind of alone
- 55:45Speaker 2: and so running made me not feel alone, like it
- 55:47Speaker 2: gave me something. It gave me a purpose, and it
- 55:50Speaker 2: made me feel good.
- 55:51Speaker 1: And you finished off first marathon I did.
- 55:53Speaker 2: And it was like I was sore, And now I
- 55:57Speaker 2: think about it when we're in the two hundermall races
- 55:59Speaker 2: were like remember when we ran our first marathons, Holy crap,
- 56:02Speaker 2: Like you couldn't walk, Like after two hundred miles. I'm
- 56:06Speaker 2: like a little stiff that day. Everybody's like like right
- 56:08Speaker 2: after they finished, but it go take an Ebsence salt bath.
- 56:11Speaker 2: Then it come back to watch the finishers finish several
- 56:13Speaker 2: hours later, and I'm like, they're like, you don't even
- 56:15Speaker 2: look like anything, right, right, right, It's weird that our
- 56:19Speaker 2: bodies just like.
- 56:20Speaker 1: Ah and running that marathon, I think I read like
- 56:24Speaker 1: you had to run past all these clubs.
- 56:27Speaker 2: So I was running exactly past all the clubs, and
- 56:29Speaker 2: I was just like wow. So each time I passed
- 56:31Speaker 2: a place, I'm like, look where you are now? You know.
- 56:34Speaker 2: It just gave me like this strength as I propelled
- 56:37Speaker 2: myself forward, like look at you now. You know. It's like,
- 56:40Speaker 2: who would have ever thought when you were in there
- 56:43Speaker 2: looking out on the road that you'd be running past
- 56:45Speaker 2: all of this?
- 56:46Speaker 1: And was there an idea like this is what I
- 56:48Speaker 1: want my life to be about now? Or has it
- 56:50Speaker 1: just been a natural progression of becoming more and more?
- 56:53Speaker 2: And I just knew it was going to be part
- 56:55Speaker 2: of my life. I wanted to be part of my life.
- 56:57Speaker 1: Yeah, and yeah, how did you know that? Like what
- 56:59Speaker 1: was what do you think it was?
- 57:01Speaker 2: And even in the middle of that first marathon, I
- 57:03Speaker 2: was planning my next one. I hadn't even got to
- 57:05Speaker 2: the finish line, not even halfway. I'm like, I think
- 57:08Speaker 2: I'll go to Honolulu. I want to do the hont
- 57:10Speaker 2: Alumu Marathon.
- 57:12Speaker 1: Yeah that's special because most people, I mean, that's unusual.
- 57:15Speaker 2: Yeah, that's my mind though, like even like, oh, I
- 57:18Speaker 2: hope somebody puts on a five hundred mile race, Candice,
- 57:20Speaker 2: you need to come up.
- 57:21Speaker 1: With five hundred mile she's going to not then though, no, no, no,
- 57:25Speaker 1: but now, but had you ever heard of ultras? Like
- 57:28Speaker 1: when did you first discover that?
- 57:30Speaker 2: War So the first year I ran two marathons, and
- 57:32Speaker 2: the second year I decided I was going to run
- 57:34Speaker 2: every marathon in California. And this is mind you not
- 57:36Speaker 2: knowing anybody, and I actually started running. Some of them
- 57:40Speaker 2: were trail marathons because at the time in California there
- 57:43Speaker 2: was too many to run. I couldn't have run them all,
- 57:45Speaker 2: but a lot of them were on twelve and I thought, oh,
- 57:49Speaker 2: this is kind of interesting. There's you know, these trails
- 57:51Speaker 2: that were running on and it was a whole lot
- 57:52Speaker 2: harder than running on a road marathon. The very first
- 57:55Speaker 2: one I did, I was like, this is way harder.
- 57:57Speaker 2: There was no water stop every mile. It was like
- 58:00Speaker 2: the guy that put on the trail marathon that I
- 58:02Speaker 2: did for my first one was in the Marine Headlands
- 58:04Speaker 2: and it was like water every six miles, like out
- 58:08Speaker 2: of a jug. And I box a thing of cookies,
- 58:10Speaker 2: which I couldn't need. I mean, they weren't vegan, so
- 58:13Speaker 2: I was like, oh my god, you know, and they
- 58:15Speaker 2: told us in advance you need to carry water bottles,
- 58:17Speaker 2: so how to buy a waste thing? So getting through
- 58:19Speaker 2: my first marathon, I met actually a guy that I
- 58:22Speaker 2: was running with and he was doing all the marathons
- 58:24Speaker 2: in California and he kind of became my mentor, this
- 58:26Speaker 2: older gentleman and he so we were running a lot
- 58:29Speaker 2: of the same ones together. He was much faster than me,
- 58:32Speaker 2: but on the trails I could kind of keep up
- 58:33Speaker 2: with him, but road he was faster.
- 58:35Speaker 1: Yeah, and this is like nine.
- 58:38Speaker 2: This is in ninety seven, ninety okay. Yeah. So then
- 58:42Speaker 2: I started hearing people I was at it was and
- 58:44Speaker 2: I remember this vividly. I was at a it was
- 58:48Speaker 2: a marathon in Morgan Hill, and I heard this lady Linda,
- 58:51Speaker 2: who's actually a friend of mine now, but she was
- 58:53Speaker 2: rambling on that she had run because this is on
- 58:55Speaker 2: a Sunday, she ran like a fifty mile or the
- 58:57Speaker 2: day before, and I was like, fuck, fifty miles. She
- 58:59Speaker 2: ran fifty miles and she's running a marathon today, like
- 59:02Speaker 2: and she talks like she's funny, like I've known her
- 59:05Speaker 2: all these years, but she was going on and on
- 59:07Speaker 2: and I'm like, how could she even be talking like
- 59:09Speaker 2: she's running this marathon today? So I heard her talking
- 59:12Speaker 2: about that, and then I thought, I'm going to run
- 59:15Speaker 2: a fifty k. It's only six miles more. I mean,
- 59:18Speaker 2: come on, I rude Trels and.
- 59:19Speaker 1: It sounds so much more impressive though.
- 59:21Speaker 2: Yeah, So I signed up. I found like a fifty
- 59:25Speaker 2: k and actually the very first fifty k let me
- 59:27Speaker 2: back that up. So I called the race director because
- 59:29Speaker 2: at the time there you had to It was in
- 59:31Speaker 2: the back of like Runner's World or whatever. There's no
- 59:35Speaker 2: email and all of that. So there was one in
- 59:37Speaker 2: Fremont called a Lonely fifty k, and this is has
- 59:40Speaker 2: nine thousand feet of climbing in it, right, And I
- 59:42Speaker 2: was like, yeah, it's in Fremont. I'm going to run
- 59:44Speaker 2: it because I live in Fremont, you know, and I
- 59:46Speaker 2: had never been up I think I've been at Mission
- 59:48Speaker 2: Peak a couple of times at that point a few times,
- 59:51Speaker 2: and I knew it was hard, but I didn't know
- 59:53Speaker 2: what was beyond that, like it was a point to point.
- 59:55Speaker 2: So it went out to del Vell and so I
- 59:57Speaker 2: called up the race director and I said, oh, I
- 59:59Speaker 2: want to sign up for fifty k and he goes,
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: have you run out there before? And I said, well,
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: I've been at Mission Peak and I'm doing marathons. He goes, hmmm.
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: He goes, you know it's really hard, it's really remote,
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: and I said oh yeah, and he goes, well, he goes,
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: how long have you been running for it? And I
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: said a couple of years. And he goes, and you
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: want this to be your first fifty k? And I
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: was like, yeah, I want to. I've been at Mission
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: Peak twice. And he goes, it's a lot harder than
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: you think. And he kind of scared me and he goes,
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: I suggest for you to run Skyline fifty k and
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: that was an easier one at Lake Chabbeu. And I
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: was like okay because he kind of scared me and
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: he was like pretty much telling me not to do it.
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: So I was like, okay, I'll go run that one.
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: So that was at the time there was only like
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: I think there was maybe four fifty k's in the
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: Bay Area. H No, I can't even tell you hundreds, right,
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: And this is just in the Bay Area where I lived.
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: I mean that whole scene had been around for probably
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: a couple decades. But yeah, it was still very much
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: this micro subculture. It was people sleeping intense the night
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: before and just small groups of people. It was hardly
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: what think, oh.
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: Yeah, everything's lottery and sells out now, I mean the
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: lonely sells out. So I decided, then, okay, I'll do
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: this fifty k. So I did the one at Lake Chabou,
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: and at that point I had already run. I did
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: this two fifteen mile looped course. It wasn't part of
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: the course, I mean some of the miles was, but
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: I wanted to feel confident that I could run thirty miles,
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: so I did thirty miles before even the race came.
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: And that was at a slower pace. I mean, race date,
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: you're always pushing harder, you know, because you're wanting to
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: get ahead of people, and you know, you have nobody
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: to push you when you're about yourself training and you're
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: just kind of dilly dellly. So I showed up. It
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: was one hundred and five degrees that day, super hot.
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: I was not used to like walking like hills, and
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: I'm seeing all these people like right off the bat
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: once we got off the road park, it was a
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: steep hill and they're all walking, and I'm thinking, the
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: heck are they walking? And people are like, you should
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: probably walk right now, you know, and it's there's lots
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: of hills, and is this your first ultrun. I'm like, yeah,
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: but I don't need to walk right. So all those
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: people later on of course passed me and they're like, see,
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: you should have been walking my legs. I mean, it
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: was so hot. I didn't know about hydration, didn't you know,
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: it wasn't drinking right, it wasn't eating correctly. Knew nothing,
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: And I was just like, by the time I got
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: to like, I think twenty seven miles, I was like,
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: oh my god, like in a bad way. I'm like,
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: am I gonna even make it? Like I was scared
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: I wasn't gonna make it to the finish because my
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: legs were so tight and just like you know, dehydrated
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: and so but I made it and I finished, and
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: I was like, oh my god, that was so hard.
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: And then I was like, well, I'm going to do
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: a fifty miler. So it just at that time, Ultra
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: Running Magazine was the magazine, so you got I got
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: a copy at the finish of the fifty k, So
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: I know anything about this magazine until I finished, and
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: that's where it opened up. It was like, all these races,
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: here's where the races are. This is my bible to
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: see where I'm gonna go next. So I signed up
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: for a fifty miler and then I did another fifty k.
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: And this is all within a four month period. And
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: I got through this fifty mile race that was in
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: Napa and it was pouring rain, like horrible horror. I
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: never ran, and conditions like that, and they actually allowed
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: you to drop to the fifty k if you wanted to.
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: And you were in the fifty miler and I stuck
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: it out. I said, Nope, I'm gonna do this and
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: I'm going to finish this and then I'm going to
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: run a hundred mile er. So in the middle of it,
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: I was just like, oh my god, what am I
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: doing it? If I can get through this, that means
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: I'm tough enough and I can do this hundred miles.
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: So I got through the finish and then decided to
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: run a hundred mile race.
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: And what are you learning about yourself along the way?
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: Like?
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: What is running doing for you?
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: So I'm learning that I am. I never looked at
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: myself as being super strong or you know, confident. I
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: was always, you know a little bit I'm not so
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: confident in what if I can do it or if
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: I can't. But my confidence was building and I was
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: feeling like I could do whatever I set my mind to.
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: And it took me a long time to learn that
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: in life, like I always would put up blocks and
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: put up doors and walls in front of me and
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: not you know, just think I couldn't do it, you know,
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: and then being able.
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: To do and then not taking that risk. It's like, well,
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: you're never really putting yourself on the line exactly.
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: And so and I remember, I'm going to backtrack to
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: me and my dad were watching when you know, way
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: back in the day, they used to have Western States
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: on why World of sports and I didn't know. And
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: so my dad, he was a runner, and he was like,
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: come watch this, you know. He there's these people running
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: from Squad Valley. I knew we're Squaw Valley and Auburn
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: were because we used to go play soccer and Auburn
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: and we'd go to the Squad Valley to ski once
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: in a while and go to the snow. And he
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: goes they're running from Squad Valley to Auburn and I
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: was like, yeah, you know. I was like twelve or
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: fourteen at the time, and I was like, okay. I
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: sat down and I was like, okay, you know, I
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: was interested, but I remember that I remember him talking
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: about this Western States and he was a runner, Like
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: I said, he had did a marathon and I was like, hmm, whatever,
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: you know, and that was my thing. Okay, I'm going
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: to go give me some money and go to the
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: store now, right.
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: But it was lodged in the back of it.
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: Yeah. So when I started running. After I did that
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: marathon and then I did my fifty k I was like,
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: I got to do this hundred miler. My dad, if
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: he was alive, he'd be right here helping me get
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: do this thing. And you know, I had heard what
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: one hundred miler was vaguely, just through that one chance,
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: you know, on the TV, and so I was like,
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: I'm gonna do this. So I didn't know anything or
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: anybody that ran and a hairy had already did my
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: few fifty two fifty k's or one fifty k and
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: two fifty miles and show up at the hunder mile race,
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: knew nothing. Didn't even have a light. So me and
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: at the time my boyfriend Kevin, I'm like, shit, I
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: got to go to Walmart or wherever get a light.
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: I need these lights for nighttime. I wasn't even thinking
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: that's how like clueless clueless. I was a no nighttime
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: running and I was like okay. And at the time
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: I got bike lights and they had like the bigger batteries.
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: It was the batteries. So I'm showing up and you know,
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: getting all this new stuff to use. And at the time,
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: I was eating a lot of baby food because it's
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: easy to digest when I was doing ultras, and I
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: thought I read up somebody baby food. I'm gonna put
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: baby food in my drop bags and draw there's almond
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: better or whatever. At the time, they didn't have a
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: squeeze packet of baby foods.
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: It was right glass, just the cans of it right there,
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: and they were.
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: Broken and my drop bangs, yeah, because they're not very
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: gentle with throt pigs. So that's what I used as fuel.
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: There was I had think a had gel at the time.
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: There was a couple of gel companies, but I in
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: cliff Bar and that was it. And I the whole time, Yeah,
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: I didn't know the right nutrition. I hadn't met anybody
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: doing these hundreds and fifty milers really to be able
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: to figure this out.
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: Well, it's the trajectory is pretty traditional, like okay, ten
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: k marathon, fifty k, fifty miler, and then it's like, okay,
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: one hundred miler, like the jump from fifty miler to
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: ae hundred miles, Like people think of those as being
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: kind of in the same world, but those are I mean,
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: you're doubling the distance you are. You know, it's like
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: it's a crazy leap, and it's a very different thing
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: doing one hundred fifty that's what I mean.
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: Back then there wasn't a lot one hundred k's, So
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: there there are one hundred k's around. But back then
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: there was like maybe four to five in the United States,
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: so you had to go that leap. That was your leap.
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: There was no like in between like they do now.
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: And what is tell me the difference.
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: It's a big difference. I mean past fifty miles. Then
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: you're like dealing with going into the night. If you
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: haven't trained at night, you're going into like, you know, hallucinations,
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: I mean not sleeping, trying to keep yourself awake. It's
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: a whole nother You're stumbling around.
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: And knowing when to walk, yeah, to take it breaks.
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: I was like, so I was so out of it
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: back then. I wouldn't even I wasn't even doing coffee
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: back then. I thought that was a drug. So so
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: in the middle of night, I'm stumbling around and this
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: lady comes up on me. She goes, are you okay,
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: And I said, no, I'm tired. And I said, I said,
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: I hope there's coffee at the next aid station. I
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: was going willing to have coffee. And she goes, okay,
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: she goes, I don't think they have it here, and
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: she goes, you need to take like a caffeine pill.
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: And I'm like, what's that. She goes, it's just like coffee,
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: and I'm like, no, that's like a drug and that's
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: like speed, and she goes, no, it's just like it's
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: two hundred milligrams of caffeine. So this me and her
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: were going on and on, and we were walking together.
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: Her name was cam and we got to the aid
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: station and they actually had no coffee. And I was like,
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: oh my god, how a man to do this? And
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: I was like bad, falling asleep like I I didn't
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: know how I was going to get even around this.
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: This was like miles. I was going into mile eighty,
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: loop eighty two, one hundred. No, I was at mile sixty,
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: so I was already going into getting to eighty and
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: I could not stay awake. So she convinced me to
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: take this caffeine pill and she goes, break it in half.
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: If you're that freaked out about this, she goes, you
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: really need to take it. You're not going to make it.
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: And she was right. I took this caffeine pill one
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: hundred milligrams, and all of a sudden, I was like wow,
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: I'm like away, and I didn't do coffee back then,
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: so so you're taking Yeah. So it definitely helped me.
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: That saved me. I probably would have never been able
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: to finish. I mean I was so out of it,
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: and just taking that little bit of caffeine got me
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: through that through that night, you know, and I was like, Okay,
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: it's not that bad. But it was years before then,
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: and then I even did coffee. I didn't start drinking
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: coffee into like two thousand and four.
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: Yeah, you don't seem like you need it.
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: No, I had some today, Okay, I did, like my espresso.
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: Do you have have you dnf'd a bunch of races?
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: You do that with it? You know, that's how you learn.
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: I mean you race all the time, you have a
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: like you're just constantly like it's just been a constant
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: stream of you racing ever since, right like a lot.
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: Yeah, like after this doing these three two hundreds, I'm
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: just like, I don't want to do anything, but I
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: have a hundred miler coming up like next weekend.
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: And do you treat every race the same or do
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: you try to peak for certain races or prioritize certain events.
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: Well, obviously with the two hundreds, you were just I
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: was just like there was no training. I was like,
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: you know you're racing and then going for it, and
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: that's a different kind of race. You're you know, you're
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: taking it a lot slower to be able to survive,
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: and then push yourself later.
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: On when you I would think in between, the most
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: important thing is making sure you're healthy and.
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: Try to gain weight back up, because I like with
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: I started, I think I was like one thirteen, one
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: six fourteen at the beginning of the race season. I
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: mean I always get down to about one hundred and
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: nine one hundred and ten if I'm doing lots of races.
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: But I got down to like one hundred and three
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: and one hundred and four and was constantly trying to add
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: you know, calories, like I mean, like jars of almond
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: butter and everything else. I'm like eating vegan ice cream,
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: which I never hardly eat, but I know I'm needing calories,
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: and so I'm like buying one from me and one
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: from my boyfriend, and my Boyfriend's like, somehow this is
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: not going rice. You're not gaining weight and I'm gaining weight.
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: So but just eating a ton of healthy and lots
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: more calories, like I said, adding more nuts and high
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: calorie stuff every day, just to gain that weight, so
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: you know you're gonna lose it when you're back into
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: the game.
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: And a typical training week is what like eighty to
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: one hundred and twenty miles.
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: Yeah, in the summers, I'm definitely up there.
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: I mean this year, I twice a day or long day.
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: And some of my runs, I mean I had some
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: three hundred some mile weeks this year.
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: And do you work with a coach or do you
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: design your own? Just do what you feel.
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I like training, and my whole thing is I
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: love just being outdoors and being in the wilderness. And
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: you know, I was fast at one time. I'm not
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: ever going to be as fast as I can, you know,
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: I guess if I had a coach. But I run
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: because I love it.
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: I don't want That's the thing. Like you just like
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: being at these races and you like being part of it.
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: That's to push.
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: Myself when I'm in a race, I'm like, training for
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: me is just enjoying the earth and seeing what I
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: can see. Because you know, I've been given a gift.
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: I feel like it's a gift to be able to
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: do this because I'm no different than anybody else. And
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: It's like I just happen to have this love for
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: being outdoors now, and that's you know, seeing things every day.
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: I don't want to miss anything, you know, because one
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: day I'm not going to be here or I can't
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: do it. And I know that time can come. I
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: could hurt myself, I could something could happen where I
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: can't run again, and so I'm enjoying it now.
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: Injury free. You've never had any.
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: Just like minor stuff like PF here and there. I've
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: always had a hamstring thing, and I heard that in
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: CrossFit years ago, and it just comes and goes. And
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: I you know, I have recovery pump boots and I
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: go to you know, get massages and so Ebsence salt baths.
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: So I'm constantly doing stuff that helps me.
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: Massages, docky puncture. You have every back issues or anything.
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: Uh No, I'm starting to get more like a shoulder
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: thing just from with your head down and you're in
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: the two hundreds and your phone. You know. It's I
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: notice that the older I get and the longer I go,
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: it bothers me. So now I don't even try to
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: carry the water bottles in my hands. And the two
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: hundreds because I'm using tracking poles. Anyways, I put the
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: water up here with my hydration and I find that
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: that actually helps me. When I'm using the trekking poles
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: and the two hundred miles rice, I usually don't grab
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: onto them until about fifty miles in, but they give
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: you something to do and then you're working your other
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: muscles so you're not like hunch.
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: It over and outside the running. What kind of cross
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: training do you do?
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: I do I left weight, so I do kettlebells, box jumps,
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: kind of like modified CrossFit stuff. Yeah, but on my
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: own And so in Bishop, I haven't been working out,
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: I mean in a gym for two months, and I
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: used to go to twenty four hour Fitness or whatever,
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: and I'm like, I don't have a lot of options
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: at Bishop. But I found that they have a CrossFit
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: that actually is open twenty four to seven, and they
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: have other stuff in there you can use the They
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: have great treadmills and rowing machines and weights that you
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: can use, so you don't have to just do CrossFit.
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: And that's kind of what I'm going to join that.
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: So you show up on the pages of Born to Run,
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: I would imagine that kind of changed your life a
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: little bit. I mean, that book was such a big deal.
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: It was a big deal, and they've still they've been
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: trying to make a movie out of that forever. I
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: don't know if that's ever going to happen, but there
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: were a couple of moments where it looked like it
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: might have might it looked like it was going to
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: go Peter sars Guard was I don't know, but I
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: don't know what happened. But so many people read that book,
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: and that was really an entry point for most people's
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: unless you read Dean Karnaz's book. I mean, this was
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: an entry point for people to discover what this whole
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: ultra running world was all about. And you were this crazy,
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: colorful figure in this book. I mean, so what was
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: that like for you and how did that change? You know,
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: what would happen to you when you would show up
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: at these races or just how you were living your life.
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: I would meet a lot of people because people were
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: not runners and then they became runners because of this book.
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: It was like so many people that there may have
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: been ten k runners or not runners at all, and
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: then they read this and they had this whole thing
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: where they wanted to get into this barefoot running and
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: this right kind of went away. Yeah, but that kind
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: of is not the thing. But they were all minimalists
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: getting into it, and I'm like, yeah, I don't you know.
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: People were coming up to me and they were like,
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: you're that girl in the book, and I'm like, yep,
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: that's me.
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: And I'm trying to remember because you went down for
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: the race with the Taravamara in the Copper Cunta.
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: No, no, this was all I was at bad Water
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: when he was right right, Yeah, that's fine. So long
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: since I do you mind if I write about your
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: yo yo? And I'm like, no, go ahead.
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: So you did the yo yo? Did you? Did you
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: ever get tempted to do the double bad Water? No?
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: I did bad Water, So everybody assumed I did bad
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: Water a bunch of times. I only did it last year. Yeah,
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: so my boyfriend has done it three times and I've
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: crued there a bunch And I always told Chris, the
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: race director, I'm not going to run it. I don't
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: run on the road. I'm not a road runner. I'm
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: not a roadrunner. And you always see me doing like
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: flatter stuff and he'd be like, uh wait, you just
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: did this or you just did that, and he was
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: always trying to encourage me to do it, and then
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: I was like no, no, no, and then finally I
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: was like, guess what I'm going to do it? So
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: I did his whole series. So he has the Cape
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: Fair which is the fifty mile, and the desert or
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: not a desert on the beach in North Carolina. And
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: then I did the Sultan Sea, which is a team race,
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: and then did bad Water so it's called the Ultra Cup.
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: So I did that last year.
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: And bad Water is back to its original course.
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: Yeah, they only one year did they not have it?
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: But they had lost The start times different. They don't
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: start and like they used to do. They start at night,
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: which is great.
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: It's much better.
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: I think it's much easier because I've crued when it
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: used to be the old time, and it's much harder.
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I crew I crewed for Dean there a
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: couple of years ago, and at like two in the afternoon,
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: you're like, what is happening?
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: But we're all trained for it, like when you're training,
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: you know, even when I've crewed there, I've always trained,
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: you know, ready for it. But when I got in,
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: I definitely trained, like you know, full on clothing out
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: in the heat of the day, and I had new problems.
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: It was fine problems.
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I want to go back because I think I
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: could push harder.
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: So did you get to your soul's melt and not
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: hold none of that? Do you know Shannon for our grief?
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: Of course, she lives here, I know.
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: And she's going to be really don't have time.
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: She's amazing, she's been able to do and of course
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: you know she's she's bound challenge.
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: I mean we've known each other amount of time.
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: Yeah, she had a twenty.
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: Four hour race and it was the same year she
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: did her first hundred miler. We know each other. Yeah,
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: I've spent a lot of time with her. She's supposed
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: to be to have Elena this weekend, but she's with
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: her knee.
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: Keeps showing up. You guys are the ogs, yeah, you know,
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: way back, So now when you show up, you're like
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: a celebrity at these races.
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: Yeah, it's interesting, but it's great. I mean with the book,
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: it's like so many people are coming up to me
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: just saying how it touched them or inspired them. And
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: emails all the time, and you know, and that's why
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: I keep going. It's like, you know, women are like, oh,
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: I'm too old to do It's like, no, you're my age.
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: Why are you too old to do this? You're not
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: too old to do anything. It's like you could do
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: anything you want at any age. And a lot of
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: women are just starting to run in their fifties, so
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: it's like it gives them somebody to look at.
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: And you've been doing this for a long time and
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: some of your biggest accomplishments are recent.
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I've always done crazy stuff.
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: Now and the book came out in March May like
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: this spring, right, yeah, may Reborn on the Run. Yeah,
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: so I haven't read the book yet, but tell me.
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: I mean we're talking about all the stuff that I
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: know is in the book. I mean, it's the autobiography.
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: But what inspired you to write a book about all
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: of this?
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: I have so many stories, So like I'd be out
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: on runs with people and they're like, why don't you
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: write a book? Why don't you write a book? You know,
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: it was a constant thing, and so a literary agent
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: from New York carol Man Agency contacted me and they said,
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: have you thought of writing a book? And I said, yeah,
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: but I don't have time to write a book. I
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: could record a book and then somebody could put it
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: on paper for me. I'm busy running all the time.
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: So they said, well, we can help you do this,
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: and so I said all right, and say, this guy
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: Dan had written an article about me, and I really
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: liked the style. He came and followed me. He did
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: all this research on me, and so he knew me
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: really well. And I said, well, do I have to
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: use one of your writers or can we use somebody else?
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: And she said, well you certainly can I hear somebody else.
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: You can hire somebody. She goes, but tell me you want,
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: and I'll contact them and have a chat with them.
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: And so I said, here's the person and here's his contact,
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: and they contacted him and then he got back to
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: me and he goes, yeah, he goes, I've never written
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: a book. He goes, I write. He writes for a
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: newspaper and he's great at interviewing. So we decided that
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: we would collaborate and we would work together and he'd
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: be my writer. So we figured out the way we
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: were going to do it. I was going to record
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: my stories. We came up with like the format of
- 1:19:03Speaker 2: the book, and then we would record like stories, like
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: the chapters. And so in the beginning we kind of
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: started and we sent it, sent some of it out,
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: and they're like, no, this like an interview because they're
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: like interviewing each other back and forth. So he was like,
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: you got to really flesh detail out. So I would
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: go out on these runs and record, you know, run
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: walk and record my whole story that I was talking about,
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: and I would have to go back and I would
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: even stop on the trail and just sit down and
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: close my eyes when it was you know, recording my chapter,
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: just remembering in full detail things. And so that's how
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: we did it. I recorded it basically, and we you know,
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: by chapter by chapter, and it was a lot of work.
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: It wasn't easy, and so that's how we did it.
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: That's cool.
- 1:19:45Speaker 2: It's really cool. Yeah.
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: So you congratulations, thank you. Yeah, that's no small thing.
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: So you've been kind of touring around, yeah.
- 1:19:53Speaker 2: Doing book signings and you know a lot of my
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: racism just doing book signings and you know in different
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: like I'm going to be in San Diego in December
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: running skirts to do a thing with them, and I
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: did a bunch of the riis in the Bay Area.
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: So I'm waiting until after the new year to start
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: doing more stuff because it's like I'm after all the running,
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: just doing all those races, Like I just want to
- 1:20:15Speaker 2: have me time and be on the trail by myself.
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: It's a weird thing, like your your story is so
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: different than mine. But like in the ultras, I'm in recovery.
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: I I'm vegan, you know, Like what is it about?
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: I mean, I need to get some tattoos. I guess
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: you have a lot of tattoos. That's my next venture,
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: I suppose, But what do you think it is about?
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: Like those three things that I mean, there's so many,
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: Like there's a lot of vegans in the ultra world,
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: like I feel like a lot. That's the sport that
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: really launched the idea that you could be an athlete
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: and be vegan. Now you're seeing athletes and all different disciplines.
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: But it kind of started in this ultra world. Maybe
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: that's because of Scott Jurich.
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: I don't know, but and I was around before him, right, so,
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: but nobody, you know, I wasn't fast or you know,
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: and that he got us on the map, you know,
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: for the vegans. And you know, like I said, I'd
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: been vegan for a long time and it shows you. Look,
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: I didn't waste away. I'm still going. I'm getting enough
- 1:21:13Speaker 2: protein I've been.
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: I mean, you're fifty three and you just ran three
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: two hundred mile plus races in a period of ten weeks.
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: Yeah, and so what we can't do anything?
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: Yeah, and you look amazing, So it's all working fine.
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: Yeah, And I'm so happy with the you know, with
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: the social media showing these other athletes that you see
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: these even raw vegan bodybuilders, and it's like, no, why
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: do you have to eat meat? Look at this guy.
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: You look at him and obviously they know what they're doing.
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: You're you're getting the right amount of calories and food
- 1:21:44Speaker 2: and building your body from there. So it's not Yeah,
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: it's sad. I wish everybody could kind of get on board.
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: Well, it's changing, you know, you know, awareness, and I
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: think social media's played a big party, which.
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: Are really good you know, documentaries and stuff, and that's
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: changing and.
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: People get angry. But then there there's a conversation that's
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: happening exactly. So there's a there's a debate that's often healthy,
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: sometimes not healthy.
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: And I think a lot of times when people are
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: like overweight, they're like, oh, I don't want it, that's
- 1:22:09Speaker 2: not good for you. It's because they're afraid, you know,
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: they have to face theirselfs. And it was funny because
- 1:22:15Speaker 2: I was running with a guy at the race and
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: he was like most men that become vegan, they were
- 1:22:20Speaker 2: overweight or something, and then they watch a documentary and
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: then they get back in, you know, they get into this.
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: It's like more women tend to be going into the veganism,
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: but guys are like meat and you know, you're supposed
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: to be the hunter kind of thing, and they.
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: Well, there's different entry points for different people, you know.
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: I think a lot of guys, Yeah, they reach middle
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: age and they feel lousy and they're overweight. I mean,
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: that's my story, and then I'm like I need to
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: do something different. And now twelve years later, it's like
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: about the environment and it's about you know, factory farming,
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: and it's about doing it I care about exactly, and
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: actually we're a turnoff at that time, Like a lot
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: of it is timing people have to be in the
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: right place in their life, right time in order to
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: receive a certain message. You know, I certainly would not
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: have been able to hear it, you know, a year
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: prior to where I was, and so, you know, I
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: think everybody has a role in how they advocate, you know,
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: these lifestyle choices, and I think they're all appropriate because
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: people are tuning into different frequencies.
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: Yep, I agree with you. A lot of people start
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: as a diet and then their their mindset, they're like wait,
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: and it goes a little further and then you're more
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: conscious of what's going on in the environment, and they
- 1:23:30Speaker 2: start just using it as a diet, not really as
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: a lifestyle because it is a lifestyle chain.
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: But then it expands. You got you you you know,
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: it's like you ran a ten k and now you're
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: the ultra Queen of the dirt Diva. What does the
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: dirt Diva mean? What is that? Where did that come from?
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: So I had the Pacific Crest, right.
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: Because explain how an ultras you you get these nicknames.
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: Well, that's not from alters, that's from this is from
- 1:23:52Speaker 2: fast packing and hiking. So so when you're doing like
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: the Appalation Trail, Pacific Crest Trail continent will divide all
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: long distance hikers. They don't use their real name. You
- 1:24:01Speaker 2: become somebody else was living.
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: It's just the thing, the tradition.
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: So I wasn't even doing a long trial. I was
- 1:24:06Speaker 2: doing the Yoyo and the JMT. And I met a
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: guy that was hiking the Pacific Crest Trawl and I
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: came running up the trail and he was like, oh,
- 1:24:15Speaker 2: you know, it's filthy. It was like on my turnaround
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: and he goes, you look like a diva. You know,
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: it was like colorful and but filthy. I hadn't showered
- 1:24:22Speaker 2: in days, you know, I'm going on like ten days.
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: And he goes, you look like a dirty diva. And
- 1:24:27Speaker 2: I was like what. And he goes, do you have
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: a trail name? And I said no. He goes dirty
- 1:24:31Speaker 2: Diva and I said I don't like that, and he
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: goes dirt Diva and I go, oh, I like that.
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: And so then we start talking and he gave me
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: his trail name and he told me I get the
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: Pacific Crest Trawl and I was like, yeah, I want
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: to do that one day. And so that kind of
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: stuck so I used that as my trail name because
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: he gave it to me. So that's kind of how
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: it stuck.
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: And You've always had the flair for the color and
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: all that, and it was like for people that are
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: just listening to this on audio, it's like, you've got
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: I don't know how many colors in your hair right now,
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: you're wearing like thick, super cool, and you're known for
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: showing up these races and you always have these these
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: like amazing outfits, usually running a skirt, like there's like
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: eight hundred colors to you and rainbows and all kinds
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: of Right, you should have your own full line of
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: your gear.
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: I would love to know I'm sponsored by people, then
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: I would love to make my own.
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: They should, Well, whoever sponsoring you should let you design
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: a line.
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: I agree, yeah, if they're listening, yeah, yeah, I just
- 1:25:26Speaker 2: love color. Color brings joy and happiness, I think. And
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: I was in such a dark place for so long,
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: and even people and races, they said, if you can
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: just stay there and run right in front of me
- 1:25:35Speaker 2: this whole race, I'm going to finish because I'm going
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: to be feeling good and happy because you know, just
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: seeing you in a race, people will say that you
- 1:25:42Speaker 2: came up at the right time. I was like feeling
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: sad and you are just you look happy. You're just happiness.
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: The color. Yeah, you're always jumping up and down and
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: smiling and like does it. But you must have your
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: dark moments of course, right during the races in life
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: in general.
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: I was telling somebody in the two hundred, I'm like, fuck,
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: like maybe a mountain lion will bite my leg and
- 1:26:04Speaker 2: I'll have to stop. So I don't have to quit,
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: like make an excuse to time, Like just maybe something
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: will happen and I have to save somebody's life and
- 1:26:10Speaker 2: I'll be able to stop the rais. I mean, you go,
- 1:26:13Speaker 2: your mind is like wacko out there, you know, and
- 1:26:16Speaker 2: that's what I think. But then I go, no, I'm
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: knock it off, you know, just keep going. Don't think that.
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: So I always try to change up. But there's those
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: points when you're like, I got to be out here
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: three more days, three days with no more sleep, you know,
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: sleeping here or there. It's freezing out. I was wearing
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: two pairs of pants at the last race, a polar
- 1:26:33Speaker 2: tech shirt, two puffy jackets, two with hoods over my
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: head with a hat with two pairs of gloves and handmarks.
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: This is that.
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: That's how cold And I'm being up over my face.
- 1:26:45Speaker 2: That is how cold I was at I and I
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: was just okay if I kept moving, Like if I
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: had to stop, it would have been way it would
- 1:26:52Speaker 2: have been a bad thing cold, like it was that
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: bad snow.
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: But I feel like your thing is you're having fun
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: all the time, like you're doing this for on You're
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: not here like I'm going to beat these people and
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: I'm going to be on a podium like You're there
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: for the ride.
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: I'm there to inspire other people. That's what I always say.
- 1:27:07Speaker 2: You know, it's like we need more people to inspire
- 1:27:11Speaker 2: other people. And I mean people are inspired by really
- 1:27:12Speaker 2: fast people, but just me, I'm average and just been
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: doing it and just do crazy things because I say
- 1:27:18Speaker 2: I want to do something and I make it.
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: You're you know you're not average, right, Well, I guess
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: you've done things no one's done, and you have plenty
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: of victories and all of that too. But it's funny
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: because you like you've won races and you've done things
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: that no one has ever done before. But you're also
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: like you can be in the middle of the packer
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: person as well and be there with you know, all
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: kinds of people who yeah.
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: I don't mind as long as I standishize if I
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: finished and last, I don't care as long as they finish.
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: And to me, I always look at that person they were,
- 1:27:45Speaker 2: you know, the last place, people were like twelve hours
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: behind me and Moab. But it's like those are the people.
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: They're out there a long time and so they get
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: through it too. So it's all up here. That's because it's.
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: Harder because imagine being out there for like a full day.
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: It's like you see that you see that at bad Water,
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: you know, like you finish and then you go back
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: down the mountain. Then you're in the hotel and then
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: you go to dinner, and then you go to sleep,
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: and you wake up the next morning and people are
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: still coming in. It's like unbelievable, It's true. Yeah, And
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: that takes an extra level of like tenacity and focus
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: and you know, I don't know, it's it's it's inspiring.
- 1:28:20Speaker 2: It is. Well, you look at Shannon, I mean when
- 1:28:22Speaker 2: she like I was like, is she We're gonna make it?
- 1:28:25Speaker 2: Like two years ago, it was like questionable, and it
- 1:28:28Speaker 2: was like dang, you know, it was like two or
- 1:28:30Speaker 2: three years ago when she finished last and she made it.
- 1:28:33Speaker 2: It's like wow, yeah, amazing.
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: So you've been in this game for a long time
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: and the whole subculture and world of ultras has changed
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: so dramatically. I would imagine there's a hardcore group of
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: people who lament these changes and want it to be
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: the way that it was. Yeah, like go back to
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: the tent and all of that, and yet now it's
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: become I don't know if it's fair to say mass
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: participate tory, but the number of people know of it
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: all yeah, and more and more people are doing it.
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: So how do you think about that growth?
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: I like it. You know, a lot of the old
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: school guys or I was talking to somebody last week
- 1:29:14Speaker 2: at the race and he was like, well, to how
- 1:29:16Speaker 2: many people that's where I'm running the two hundreds. Well, yeah,
- 1:29:18Speaker 2: if you want to be in a race where there's
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: less people, you do the two hundreds. That's more on
- 1:29:22Speaker 2: the edge. Now that's a French people to how many.
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: People are showing up at the two hundreds.
- 1:29:27Speaker 2: So let's see that race had one hundred and I
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: want to say like one hundred and eighty hundred it
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: did sell Ta sold out. Tabo was like two hundred
- 1:29:38Speaker 2: and something.
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: It sold out, and how many people DNF it's a.
- 1:29:41Speaker 2: High finishing rate. All the two hundreds eighty percent finishing rate.
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: How are they vetting people for that or what do
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: you Why do you think that.
- 1:29:48Speaker 2: Is because you get more time. The cutoffs are not
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: tight because she's allowing for sleep in the race. So
- 1:29:56Speaker 2: it's not a stage race, but it's like a stage
- 1:29:58Speaker 2: race because it's a continue clock running and there is
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: plenty of time. So like the earlier cutoffs, well this
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: race it just seemed like because it's longer that the
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: you know, you get more extended. But I think the
- 1:30:09Speaker 2: first cut off at mile thirty or no, it was
- 1:30:13Speaker 2: like twenty you because it's so remote, she can't doesn't
- 1:30:16Speaker 2: have a lot of cutoffs in between because you can't
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: get the people out of there, so you just keep going.
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: But the first cutoff you had to get to twenty miles,
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: you had thirteen hours, which is totally doable. She makes
- 1:30:28Speaker 2: it so it's like two and a half miles an
- 1:30:29Speaker 2: hour to three and that allows for sleep, so you
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: could sleep every day for five hours if you wanted
- 1:30:34Speaker 2: right and still finish, that would be like at the
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: back of the packers doing it.
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: So what does the sleep look like at the front
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: of the packing.
- 1:30:43Speaker 2: She takes like two hour nap breaks on two minute
- 1:30:46Speaker 2: nap breaks on the track that she was telling me
- 1:30:49Speaker 2: that I tahow, I go, how much did you sleep?
- 1:30:51Speaker 2: Because I go, I only got two hours of sleep
- 1:30:53Speaker 2: and I still took ninety hours to finish, you know,
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: because I was wobbling and just sitting down a lot
- 1:30:59Speaker 2: at the aid stations and eating and just like trying
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: to get myself to go because I wanted to sleep
- 1:31:02Speaker 2: but I couldn't. And she goes, oh, I probably slept
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: about I think she said twelve minutes total.
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: Twelve so like six two minute naps or something like that.
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: It's unbelievable.
- 1:31:14Speaker 2: I go, I had two hours, which was not enough.
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: I try to have five hours total in two hundred
- 1:31:19Speaker 2: in the first two of the Triple Crown, I only
- 1:31:22Speaker 2: got two hours in and it was the hallucinations were, yeah, out.
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: What are you seeing when you're hallucinating?
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: Everything's just something A tree is people, you know, It's
- 1:31:32Speaker 2: just like a stick is a snake and it's.
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: Like it does it happen during the day too, or
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: only at night?
- 1:31:38Speaker 2: You see it in the day, but mostly at night.
- 1:31:40Speaker 2: And then you hear I was getting audio staff and
- 1:31:43Speaker 2: it was like nobody's around. There's people around me, No,
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: they're not here. And at the end it was just
- 1:31:48Speaker 2: like everything was. At the end of Bigfoot. That was
- 1:31:51Speaker 2: the first time where I didn't get at least three
- 1:31:54Speaker 2: four or five hours sleep in a race and the
- 1:31:57Speaker 2: walls were like every rock was a painting, like somebody
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: came out and like I was like, wow, these people
- 1:32:03Speaker 2: came out in this little town and they painted each
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: rock with like a picture, a mural. I was like,
- 1:32:08Speaker 2: this is really cool. And I would just be stumbling
- 1:32:11Speaker 2: and falling asleep on my feet. And so at the
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: end I told my boyfriend he pasted me in and
- 1:32:17Speaker 2: I said, did you see that like killer rock wall?
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: And you saw? Like what? Because there was no rock?
- 1:32:21Speaker 2: He goes, there was a rock wall? Do I go, no,
- 1:32:23Speaker 2: there was like all the paintings on it. And he goes,
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: there's no paintings. I said, tomorrow, you need to drive
- 1:32:27Speaker 2: me back over there. I would get there the next
- 1:32:29Speaker 2: day and I'm like, nothing on there. I saw all
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: these really cool paintings. Yes, And at Tahoe I kept
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: so Truman was crewing. He was on the crew at
- 1:32:39Speaker 2: Tahoe with my pacers, and at the end I was
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: so out of it. I kept stopping and I would
- 1:32:43Speaker 2: stop at a bush and start petting it, and I
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: was like, it's Truman. And then I'm like, fuck, what
- 1:32:48Speaker 2: am I doing? And I'd snap out of it, like
- 1:32:50Speaker 2: knowing that what are you doing? You're wandering to these bushes,
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: petting bushes. And my pacer was in front of me
- 1:32:55Speaker 2: and she calls me sister. She's from Mexico. My friend
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: Gabby a paster at bad Water this year, and she goes, sister,
- 1:33:01Speaker 2: what are you doing? And I'm like nothing. She's like, okay,
- 1:33:05Speaker 2: I keep coming. And then at bad Water she had
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: hallucinations and we had to push her heart because she
- 1:33:10Speaker 2: barely she was nearly cut off, and she kept saying,
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: I see a Chinaman in a Chinese pointy hat. And
- 1:33:15Speaker 2: so I kept going to the bushes and at one
- 1:33:17Speaker 2: point she goes, what are you doing, sister, And I said,
- 1:33:20Speaker 2: I don't see a chinaman with a Chinese hat. She laughed,
- 1:33:23Speaker 2: because you're.
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: Losing of all the hallucinations after especially after Bigfoot, look
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: into somebody's collective on I mean.
- 1:33:32Speaker 2: After Lowab, everybody has like a story, crazy stories like
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: I saw sculptures of mountain lions out there out of
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: the snow. I mean, it was just crazy. The people
- 1:33:44Speaker 2: that can't be good for you. But no. And one
- 1:33:47Speaker 2: of the women that was like, I think she was
- 1:33:48Speaker 2: in like second or third vantage. She was doing the
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: Triple Crown too fun, and she had like major hallucinations
- 1:33:55Speaker 2: where she laid down and stopped and everything was moving.
- 1:33:58Speaker 2: She was trapped in this other world. She said. The
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: race director had to come find her because we're all
- 1:34:03Speaker 2: wearing spot devices in order to send a search and
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: rescue out. They couldn't get to us in time. And
- 1:34:08Speaker 2: so the race director, Candace, she always heads up a
- 1:34:11Speaker 2: team like Okay, we know that's fun, and she hasn't
- 1:34:13Speaker 2: moved for seven hours. We got I gotta go to her.
- 1:34:15Speaker 2: I got to find out what's going on. And so
- 1:34:17Speaker 2: she went out to her and she was said she
- 1:34:19Speaker 2: was trapped. She couldn't get going, she was in like
- 1:34:22Speaker 2: this another world. She was so out of it and
- 1:34:24Speaker 2: she hadn't slept. Wow. So yeah, that's why I try
- 1:34:27Speaker 2: to sleep a little bit because I don't want to
- 1:34:28Speaker 2: be there.
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: I got there so good. I would imagine it pays
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: divid it if you can force yourself to sleep.
- 1:34:34Speaker 2: Yeah, it does, you try to. But she sleeps on
- 1:34:36Speaker 2: trail is what she does. And what happened is she
- 1:34:38Speaker 2: went to lay down on the trail and she sat
- 1:34:41Speaker 2: her light down and she couldn't find it in her
- 1:34:43Speaker 2: gloves and it was freezing out there, so she couldn't move.
- 1:34:45Speaker 2: She just she would see headlights go by, and she
- 1:34:48Speaker 2: was trying to say stuff and couldn't get it out
- 1:34:51Speaker 2: to people, like they were not that far away from her,
- 1:34:53Speaker 2: but nobody saw it because it was dark. Right, So wow,
- 1:34:56Speaker 2: that's craziness.
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: So what's driving all of this? Like what is it?
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: What keeps you in it? Like you've done hundreds of
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: these things, Like why how are you still enthusiastic about it?
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: What are you trying to learn about yourself or prove
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: to yourself?
- 1:35:11Speaker 2: Or is it just I just want to keep challenging
- 1:35:13Speaker 2: myself as long as I can because I know I'm
- 1:35:15Speaker 2: only here for this one time in my life, and
- 1:35:18Speaker 2: it's like I just enjoy being out there. I just
- 1:35:21Speaker 2: enjoy the whole thing and the people you meet along
- 1:35:23Speaker 2: the way, it's like you're a family. Especially in the
- 1:35:26Speaker 2: two hundreds, you got to help each other. You connect.
- 1:35:29Speaker 2: If you don't have pacers or crew at night, you're
- 1:35:31Speaker 2: like hooking up with another runner for safety purposes, just
- 1:35:34Speaker 2: keeping each other motivated. And you learn everybody's story out there.
- 1:35:37Speaker 2: It's like, we all have a story and it's really
- 1:35:39Speaker 2: cool to share these things.
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: What do you think people don't understand about hundreds and
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: two hundreds and these crazy ultra races.
- 1:35:47Speaker 2: They just think it's way too far in that people
- 1:35:48Speaker 2: can't do that. That's just like, you know, it's unheard of.
- 1:35:52Speaker 2: They don't believe that we can do this, and they
- 1:35:54Speaker 2: just think, I think you're lying or yeah, they just
- 1:35:56Speaker 2: think we're not you know, And it's getting more common,
- 1:36:01Speaker 2: especially now with the hundreds. Two hundreds are still a
- 1:36:05Speaker 2: little bit out there. Yeah, but I'm trying to bring
- 1:36:07Speaker 2: everybody in. Anybody can do a two hundred.
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: It's easier than anybody can do it two hundred.
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: I swear to god, it's easier than one hundred. And
- 1:36:13Speaker 2: this is why, because it's a track, get so much time, Yeah,
- 1:36:16Speaker 2: so you get so much more time to finish, and
- 1:36:18Speaker 2: it's doable, and that's why the finishing rate is high.
- 1:36:21Speaker 2: You could push yourself, you know, first one, go out
- 1:36:23Speaker 2: and see how you do. But it's a matter of
- 1:36:25Speaker 2: managing your sleep and managing your fuel because you're alone
- 1:36:28Speaker 2: out there and you've got to be taking care of yourself,
- 1:36:31Speaker 2: so you can't have a problem. You got twenty miles
- 1:36:33Speaker 2: and could take ten hours to get into the next
- 1:36:35Speaker 2: aid station, you better be damn well ready to take
- 1:36:38Speaker 2: care of yourself.
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: I think people would be surprised at the sort of
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: type of person that shows up at these races, because
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: I think if you don't know better, you imagine or
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: you project this image of this super athlete. And there
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: are certainly those kinds of people. But in my experience,
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: a lot of the people you're like, WHOA like you?
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: They just look like every average every day They don't
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: even necessarily look athletic. Like I just did a podcast
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: with this guy, Sane Rwall, who made this documentary about
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: the thirty one hundred self transcendence. Right about this where
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: they go around the half mile block of Queens. There's
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: like thirty I don't have twenty five of them or whatever.
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: Every year and they literally run from six am to
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: midnight every day for like fifty two days in a
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: row until they whoever gets to thirty one hundred miles
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: first wins literally around a city block like the most boy,
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: and then they switch directions each day or something like that.
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: And you look at these people and you're like, you
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: would never think.
- 1:37:40Speaker 2: Like they could do so yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: And they do and it makes you. It really reframes
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: how you think about sport and performance and extraordinary.
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: Company because it's a mind thing, Like you have to
- 1:37:55Speaker 2: have a strong mind to.
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: Do a lot of this, and how have you trained
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: your mind? Like what is what is your relationship with
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: your mind? Because it is so mental, Like how have
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: you gotten to this place where you can push through
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: and do.
- 1:38:06Speaker 2: These positive thinking and thinking of others that are not here?
- 1:38:10Speaker 2: Are people that are injured or wanting to change places.
- 1:38:13Speaker 2: You know, there's people out there that are sick that
- 1:38:16Speaker 2: have cancer. People I know would they would trade in
- 1:38:20Speaker 2: an instant to go out and do the Triple Crown
- 1:38:22Speaker 2: and have me have their cancer, you know what I mean.
- 1:38:24Speaker 2: It's like you got to do it for other people,
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: and you know, just do it for everybody that can't.
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: And that's my big sass. So do you take like
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: a do you have like a mental image of an individual,
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: like when you hit that breaking point you don't want
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: to keep going, like what gets you.
- 1:38:39Speaker 2: Through a lot of times, I run for people. And
- 1:38:41Speaker 2: a friend, Dennis O'Connor just passed away and I saw
- 1:38:43Speaker 2: him recently at Tahoe and he was out on a
- 1:38:45Speaker 2: training run. I believe he was in France or the
- 1:38:48Speaker 2: Alp somewhere, just out on business and he was out
- 1:38:52Speaker 2: on a run and there was I guess a storm.
- 1:38:54Speaker 2: I don't know the full thing, you know, I just
- 1:38:56Speaker 2: from what I read online. And he fell and he
- 1:38:59Speaker 2: broke his arm, and he didn't have a spot device,
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: but he had his phone and he was able to
- 1:39:03Speaker 2: send like a message, and the search and rescue couldn't
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: come out to him. The storm was too bad. So
- 1:39:09Speaker 2: they found him a few days later dead. So stuff
- 1:39:12Speaker 2: like that, I'm like, he was doing what he loved.
- 1:39:14Speaker 2: Everybody loved him in the Bay Area running community, anybody
- 1:39:17Speaker 2: they met. Super nice guy. And so during you know,
- 1:39:21Speaker 2: the last two hundred I just said I'm doing this
- 1:39:23Speaker 2: for Dennis. Dennis is with me and we're you know,
- 1:39:25Speaker 2: he's not here anymore to do it, and there's no
- 1:39:28Speaker 2: complaining for me. I'm doing what I love and he
- 1:39:30Speaker 2: did what he love did up until the end. But
- 1:39:33Speaker 2: it's just still sad way to go to be by
- 1:39:34Speaker 2: yourself and right, you know, so from hypothermia or whatever,
- 1:39:38Speaker 2: he passed away because nobody could.
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: Get to Yeah. So when you think of like the
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: Triple Crown two hundred things that you just did, or
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: the double John muor whatever that's called, like, how do
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: you like, what does it mean to you?
- 1:39:52Speaker 2: Just you know, just showing other women. It's a lot
- 1:39:55Speaker 2: about me inspiring other women to do things that they
- 1:39:58Speaker 2: think they couldn't do. And I was always afraid to
- 1:40:01Speaker 2: even be out in the wilderness. When I first started running,
- 1:40:03Speaker 2: I was like, there's no way I would be out
- 1:40:05Speaker 2: running on a training run going past a certain point
- 1:40:07Speaker 2: into the mountain. And now it's like, I'll just go
- 1:40:10Speaker 2: wherever I want a carry as spot device safety. You know,
- 1:40:14Speaker 2: out where I lived.
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: There's a spot devices like a GPS.
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: Beacon, and I can hit the button if something something happens,
- 1:40:19Speaker 2: it alerts, yeah, and it goes right to my boyfriend
- 1:40:23Speaker 2: to directly to his phone. When I hit that button
- 1:40:26Speaker 2: and then it goes to the search and rescue as well,
- 1:40:28Speaker 2: so it means I ain't coming out anywhere, but we're
- 1:40:30Speaker 2: going to get a satellite phone. So that way if
- 1:40:33Speaker 2: I'm ever out on a run, to let him know, like, Okay,
- 1:40:36Speaker 2: I'm going to be three hours behind. I got stuck
- 1:40:38Speaker 2: in a storm over here and I can't get over
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: the past yet. But I'm not needing a rescue, so
- 1:40:42Speaker 2: I don't need to push that other button. But we're
- 1:40:44Speaker 2: because he had an accident in the wilderness and he
- 1:40:46Speaker 2: didn't have a spot device. He broke his pulpits in
- 1:40:48Speaker 2: five places. Seven months ago. Wow out on a training
- 1:40:52Speaker 2: run and he was taking pictures standing on a ledge.
- 1:40:55Speaker 2: The rock came down. He was going head first. He
- 1:40:58Speaker 2: was able to twist his body around, landed on his pelvis,
- 1:41:02Speaker 2: and his phone was still up above him. He had
- 1:41:03Speaker 2: a crawl to get his phone. He had no reception.
- 1:41:06Speaker 2: He had to crawl. He didn't know how far he
- 1:41:08Speaker 2: was gonna have to go. That's time. He didn't know
- 1:41:10Speaker 2: how far. Bunch. She broke fine service to get service. Yeah,
- 1:41:14Speaker 2: so he had a crawl one mile. Took him four hours.
- 1:41:17Speaker 2: It was getting dark. It was in February. He had
- 1:41:19Speaker 2: no gear to get through the night, and had he
- 1:41:23Speaker 2: not been calm and relaxed, like that's the kind of
- 1:41:25Speaker 2: person he is, he could have died out there. But
- 1:41:28Speaker 2: he was able to get reception. Luckily, you know, there
- 1:41:32Speaker 2: was for whatever reason he got a little bit of
- 1:41:34Speaker 2: reception able to call. He called his work first, because
- 1:41:37Speaker 2: he's supposed to be flying that plane that flies people
- 1:41:39Speaker 2: to get injured.
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: He's supposed to be the guy rescuing himself.
- 1:41:43Speaker 2: So he called and he was like got it. He goes,
- 1:41:46Speaker 2: I'm sending sorrow where you you know. He was able
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: to tell Hi where he was at, and so the
- 1:41:50Speaker 2: search and rescue came out to him, and then it
- 1:41:52Speaker 2: still took him a while. It was another six miles
- 1:41:55Speaker 2: to get him to the ambulance. So he was that
- 1:41:58Speaker 2: far away from the vehicle that he would have not
- 1:42:00Speaker 2: made it, there's no he said, he couldn't have made
- 1:42:02Speaker 2: it pretty much any farther than he did. He was
- 1:42:04Speaker 2: just trying to remain calm. He knew he was in
- 1:42:06Speaker 2: a bad situation, but he just had it, you know,
- 1:42:09Speaker 2: And he was basically scooting like for one mile four hours,
- 1:42:13Speaker 2: scooting in your butt like trying to not do anything
- 1:42:17Speaker 2: to one side of you. So and so they were
- 1:42:19Speaker 2: able to take him to the hospital and X ray him,
- 1:42:21Speaker 2: and then they were like, yeah, we're going to put
- 1:42:22Speaker 2: you in our put you in your plane that he'd
- 1:42:24Speaker 2: spot be flying, and fly you to Reno and no surgery.
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: So now he's got a spot device. Yes, it's like ironic,
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: but he's the guy who should know more than anybody
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: how important that is. But it's like it's like a
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: lawyer being his own outage. Yeah.
- 1:42:36Speaker 2: Well, and you know, it's like he didn't really know
- 1:42:39Speaker 2: and we didn't think, you know, he had just moved
- 1:42:40Speaker 2: to Bishop and it's like, oh, yeah, we don't. And
- 1:42:43Speaker 2: I wasn't even around. I was in I was in Texas,
- 1:42:48Speaker 2: pacing at one hundred mile race and then I get
- 1:42:49Speaker 2: this rambling message, Oh, I tried to base jump off
- 1:42:52Speaker 2: of a of a mountain and I fell and I
- 1:42:56Speaker 2: broke my pelvis. That's what I got. And that's the
- 1:42:58Speaker 2: message he left me. He goes, I'm at the hospit
- 1:43:00Speaker 2: but all click love you. I was like, what the
- 1:43:02Speaker 2: fuck is this? And I called him in what are
- 1:43:05Speaker 2: you talking about? Oh?
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: He fell?
- 1:43:07Speaker 2: He had hardly any reception back on this phone because
- 1:43:09Speaker 2: I'm having surgery and I'm like, wait, wait, what's happening.
- 1:43:11Speaker 2: What's happening? Wow. But he's just that kind of guy like,
- 1:43:14Speaker 2: don't worry about I'm cool.
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: Wow. So he still making it dangerous, super dangerous. Do
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: are you familiar with what's been going on in Malibu
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: Creek here? There's like, uh, there was a murder and
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: there's been a bunch of break ins around here, and
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: they've just apprehended a guy who they're calling the Malibu
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: State Park Survivalist or something like that. Whoa I haven't,
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: but there's like a guy who's been living out like
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: the big don't You've probably right? Yeah, I was just
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: running there this morning. That's the local. That's where I go.
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: There was like a dad and his child who were
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: camping in there, like I don't know, eight or nine
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: months ago, who got shot point blank. And there's been
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: a couple of other weird things that have happened around here,
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: like like a dead body discovered by the Hindu town
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: and they don't know if these things are related. Yeah,
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: and then a bunch of breakings around here where nothing's stolen,
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: but they can tell of somebody. You know, for forced entry,
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: but the food, like they've eaten all the food and
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: they're taking food out of there. Yeah, so it's like, oh,
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: somebody's living in the woods, right, Yeah. So they just
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: there's been like this manhunt, like just like two weeks ago,
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: there were like twelve cop cars and like those armored
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: tank like military LAPD vehicles and the helicopters, and they
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: found this guy. I don't know that they've been able
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: to legitimate, like be able to prove that he's the
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: guy behind all of this, but some guy's been living
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: back out and I mean there's so much land, there's
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: got to be people like that all over the place. Yeah,
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: there's like these people off the grid are.
- 1:44:46Speaker 2: That they can do it?
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:44:48Speaker 2: I mean they can't go way up in the mountains
- 1:44:49Speaker 2: in the winter because it's snowing, but they can come
- 1:44:51Speaker 2: in around town and there's so many off road vehicle
- 1:44:55Speaker 2: trails and Bishop like I can run for days. I
- 1:44:57Speaker 2: mean we're working on picking maybe a two model you
- 1:45:00Speaker 2: down there too.
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: Oh, really like making your own trail.
- 1:45:03Speaker 2: No, I'm talking the race director race out there.
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: What would you call it? Truman? Truman?
- 1:45:12Speaker 2: No, Bishop two hundred.
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: Well, I love the fact that that you are this
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: like strong uh, you know, presence and uh and source
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: of strength for so many women. You know. I think
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: it's super important. And your story is like crazy cinematic.
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: It's like, oh, you're working in a beauty parlor and
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: you're not an athlete, and you got all these tattoos
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: and crazy hair and your goth never had done anything,
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: and now you're like you just crush it, you know,
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: and you continue to crush it and you show up
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: and you show up and you show up, and it's
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: just I think it's the I think what speaks to
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: me more than anything is like the spirit in which
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: you do it, Like you're just you're full of like
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: good energy and happiness.
- 1:45:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: That's inspiring. Yeah.
- 1:45:54Speaker 2: And I look back though, and people like, would you
- 1:45:57Speaker 2: change anything? And I said nope, because I wouldn't be
- 1:45:59Speaker 2: who I am today. Yeah, I had I not had
- 1:46:01Speaker 2: to go through any of those experience darknesses, get a
- 1:46:04Speaker 2: dr yeah, it's like I wouldn't be sitting right here
- 1:46:07Speaker 2: in front of you had I not been all of
- 1:46:09Speaker 2: those things. Yeah.
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: So when people, I'm sure people email you or get
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: in touch with you and say I can't get off
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: drugs or I'm trying to get sober, You're inspiring me,
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: Like what do you usually try to share with those people?
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: You know?
- 1:46:22Speaker 2: Of course try to tell them go to AAAR and
- 1:46:24Speaker 2: A right off the bat that I'm not a therapist,
- 1:46:26Speaker 2: but I just, you know, I just say, if you
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: just you know, believe in yourself and start exercising, start
- 1:46:32Speaker 2: eating right, you can do it, you know. And it's like,
- 1:46:36Speaker 2: sure enough, months later, people will message me back and
- 1:46:39Speaker 2: say thank you for just even saying anything to me,
- 1:46:41Speaker 2: because I didn't think you were going to message me back.
- 1:46:43Speaker 2: And I get that all the time. I'm like, why
- 1:46:45Speaker 2: wouldn't I message you back? I mean, you get a
- 1:46:47Speaker 2: lot of every emails. I get a lot of emails,
- 1:46:49Speaker 2: but I always try to at least give them a
- 1:46:51Speaker 2: sentence on a post because that one person you could
- 1:46:55Speaker 2: be changing their life. And I learned that long time
- 1:46:57Speaker 2: ago that I'm like, I need to and especially those
- 1:47:00Speaker 2: ones where you're like, oh, there's there's you know, reaching
- 1:47:03Speaker 2: out to me, and I need to say something because
- 1:47:05Speaker 2: who knows who they're not reaching to.
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: And I find often that it's it's not necessarily about
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: the information. It's like yeah, duh, like you need to
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: go to an a meeting, or you need to raise
- 1:47:15Speaker 1: your hand and ask for help, or you need to
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: see a shrink, or you need to like I think
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: most people already know that, but it's they want they're like,
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: they're they are raising their hand to you, sure, and
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: it's the connection. It's the sense that they're being heard
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: and they're being recognized. I think that is the most
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: important thing.
- 1:47:33Speaker 2: I agree with you, for.
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: Sure, and that I think can be transformative for people,
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: for sure. I think this is a really boring question,
- 1:47:40Speaker 1: but I'm going to get killed if I don't ask,
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: which is like, take me through a day in food,
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: Like how do you how do you do all this
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: stuff and do it on a vegan diet? What are
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: you eating? What are you eating typical day? What are
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: you eating when you're you know, what are you eating?
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: What do you bring with you when you're training? And
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: like how do you fuel on these races?
- 1:48:00Speaker 2: So usually like morning it's either like I usually do
- 1:48:06Speaker 2: like a smoothie or do some yogurt with pinoli on it,
- 1:48:10Speaker 2: and just like yeah, exactly, so Ela, So it's uh,
- 1:48:18Speaker 2: what is it? It's what they eat, the tarmar I eat
- 1:48:22Speaker 2: in uh, the Copper Canyon in Mexico, and so it's
- 1:48:26Speaker 2: just a grain that they use that has all this
- 1:48:27Speaker 2: protein and supposed to have all these vitamins in it,
- 1:48:29Speaker 2: and it tastes actually good, and I like adding it
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: to my yogurt just to add some more flavor and
- 1:48:34Speaker 2: maybe a little protein. And usually that's all I have
- 1:48:36Speaker 2: in the morning. And a lot of times I don't
- 1:48:38Speaker 2: even eat before I run in the morning if I'm
- 1:48:39Speaker 2: just going out for a short run until I come
- 1:48:41Speaker 2: back like at eleven. I'm not a big breakfast person,
- 1:48:44Speaker 2: and then I'll have like for lunch, I'll just take
- 1:48:47Speaker 2: like a Beyond Meat Burger patty and a bowl of
- 1:48:50Speaker 2: fruit and just eat the patty by itself and then
- 1:48:52Speaker 2: some fruit. And then for dinner's my main meal. So
- 1:48:55Speaker 2: I just do like a big salad with a hodgepodge
- 1:48:57Speaker 2: of everything in it, you know, some you know, beyond
- 1:49:01Speaker 2: meat burger, you know, I use like saracha, vegan mayo,
- 1:49:07Speaker 2: like spicy stuff, you know, and just every vegetable. And
- 1:49:10Speaker 2: I do a lot of cauliflower rice. I like that.
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: Yeah, that's one.
- 1:49:13Speaker 2: Of my favorite things.
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: So somebody is not that exciting, all right, I know,
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: it's basic That's why it's like, this is kind of
- 1:49:18Speaker 1: a boring quest. I suspected that your answer would be
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: something like that, but I think a lot of people
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: would be surprised. They're like, well, how is that? That
- 1:49:26Speaker 1: doesn't seem like very much? Like how is that powering
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: this person through one hundred and twenty miles of running
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: every week?
- 1:49:32Speaker 2: It does if you're eating it, well, I mean, you
- 1:49:33Speaker 2: know other stuff like when I'm really hungry, you know,
- 1:49:35Speaker 2: I'll add more almond butter into like a smoothie and
- 1:49:38Speaker 2: just more calories. But I'm getting clearly enough because I'm
- 1:49:41Speaker 2: not you know, if I start feeling like I'm losing weight,
- 1:49:43Speaker 2: then I start adding more calories. But I'm just not
- 1:49:46Speaker 2: a huge like eating tons of food all the time.
- 1:49:49Speaker 2: And from when I'm out running, I always bring stuff.
- 1:49:51Speaker 2: So what do you bring you when you're almond butter? Packets?
- 1:49:54Speaker 2: Like packets of almond butter. And this one company I
- 1:49:57Speaker 2: just found makes like a bigger one, so it's like
- 1:49:59Speaker 2: five so I can use that it's a trail better
- 1:50:03Speaker 2: And they only have one vegan formula, so I'm going
- 1:50:05Speaker 2: to try to email them and say, can we make
- 1:50:07Speaker 2: the coffee one with vegan for the two hundreds. So
- 1:50:11Speaker 2: I use that actually during the two hundred mile race,
- 1:50:13Speaker 2: and it was great because in between those aid stations,
- 1:50:16Speaker 2: when I had like five hours ago, that thing powered
- 1:50:19Speaker 2: me and your Energy, which is a great company. They're
- 1:50:23Speaker 2: local here, and they have like four to five ingredients
- 1:50:26Speaker 2: and so it's thicker than a regular gel, and it's
- 1:50:29Speaker 2: almost like a consistency of an almond butter. And they're
- 1:50:32Speaker 2: like about one hundred and eighty calories per little packet
- 1:50:34Speaker 2: of gel. So I use that in baby food packets
- 1:50:37Speaker 2: and that's pretty much what I eat, and then even
- 1:50:39Speaker 2: in these two hundred mile races in between, that's all
- 1:50:41Speaker 2: I'm eating. But at the race aid stations, I sit
- 1:50:44Speaker 2: down and they make that's one thing unique about between
- 1:50:48Speaker 2: one hundred and a two hundred and one hundred mile race.
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: I'm not eight ful meal.
- 1:50:51Speaker 2: You have to sit down because you got to go
- 1:50:52Speaker 2: twenty miles again. So they have a full vegan, gluten
- 1:50:56Speaker 2: free selection there for you. Yeah, they have the bin,
- 1:50:58Speaker 2: the free vegan bin, and there's a lot of people.
- 1:51:02Speaker 2: Even one of my pacers is not even a vegan,
- 1:51:05Speaker 2: but he was trying to eat more vegan when he
- 1:51:07Speaker 2: was out there with us, and he was eating the
- 1:51:08Speaker 2: gluten free and he goes, this stuff is good. So
- 1:51:10Speaker 2: they whip up you a patty right there. You have
- 1:51:12Speaker 2: to wait for you, you know, because they're making it
- 1:51:14Speaker 2: to order, because you know, not coming in like a
- 1:51:16Speaker 2: hundred mile race a bunch of people, you got to
- 1:51:18Speaker 2: leave food out, so they cook it up. You sit there,
- 1:51:20Speaker 2: and they even had gluten free vegan bread. I was like,
- 1:51:22Speaker 2: what you know. So I would sit down and eat
- 1:51:26Speaker 2: tons of and people are like, wow, can you eat
- 1:51:28Speaker 2: that much? So I'd have lentil soup, then I would
- 1:51:30Speaker 2: the patty, then I would have the bread, and then
- 1:51:33Speaker 2: I would have hash browns and then I would go again.
- 1:51:36Speaker 2: So that was a lot of fuel. And then in
- 1:51:38Speaker 2: between I would do the almond butter and the mere
- 1:51:41Speaker 2: energy in the baby food.
- 1:51:42Speaker 1: Do you do real foods too, like dates and dates?
- 1:51:46Speaker 2: I don't do a lot of Yeah, if they have
- 1:51:48Speaker 2: sweet potatoes out there, but dates I carry those all
- 1:51:50Speaker 2: the time. Like dates are like one of my favorite
- 1:51:52Speaker 2: things for training because bars, you know, it's like they
- 1:51:56Speaker 2: have so many different things. I mean they even have
- 1:51:58Speaker 2: raw foods bars, but I they just have dates for
- 1:52:00Speaker 2: the sweetness and the carbohydrates.
- 1:52:02Speaker 1: Like their nature is gel they are.
- 1:52:04Speaker 2: When I did the marathon Disab in Morocco many years ago,
- 1:52:08Speaker 2: the stage race, I noticed, like the guys that were
- 1:52:10Speaker 2: winning these races, I'm like, how do they their packs
- 1:52:13Speaker 2: look so small. It's because they look at your calorie
- 1:52:15Speaker 2: content and you have to have a certain amount of day.
- 1:52:17Speaker 2: They just had bags of dates and that was the
- 1:52:20Speaker 2: amount of calories, you know, for the entire race, because
- 1:52:23Speaker 2: it's three dates is like one hundred and twenty calories.
- 1:52:26Speaker 2: So I'm like, shit, that's how they got away with it.
- 1:52:29Speaker 2: I'm like taking wrappers off my bars to make it
- 1:52:31Speaker 2: lighter in the bag, and you know whatever else.
- 1:52:34Speaker 1: You You just did that race once, Yeah you do.
- 1:52:37Speaker 2: I'd like to do it again, but it's just so crazy.
- 1:52:39Speaker 2: Now that's a crazy race with a thousand people. Yeah, exploded.
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: I just had Oaks on.
- 1:52:47Speaker 2: Yeah, she's really documentary about She's amazing. She's so funny.
- 1:52:51Speaker 1: I know, she's very funny.
- 1:52:53Speaker 2: I'm like, wow, she's really.
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: Serious, but like really funny and self deprecating.
- 1:52:57Speaker 2: Right, You're like, you're amazing. But she's like, I don't like.
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: Running, and she's like I don't like it. I'm not
- 1:53:03Speaker 1: very good at it. I'm a ship runner.
- 1:53:05Speaker 2: It's like, how how could you? Yeah, she's I want
- 1:53:09Speaker 2: to see her documentary.
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: Yeah, you should watch it. It's good.
- 1:53:11Speaker 2: She's really she's a cool lady.
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: I think it's worth noting also, like just on the
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: calorie thing and like how you eat every day that
- 1:53:20Speaker 1: you've been doing this so long. When when you go
- 1:53:23Speaker 1: out on your daily twenty mile run or whatever it
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: is that you're doing, that's just not that. It can't
- 1:53:29Speaker 1: be that taxing, Like people think, oh my god, twenty miles,
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: Like I'd be in bed for a week after that,
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: you know, like eight. Yeah.
- 1:53:35Speaker 2: It's like I'm like taking pictures and selfies and making videos.
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: Who is do you do? Who's taking all those pictures? Me?
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: So how are you doing that when you're like facing
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: Oh you do? Okay, I have a little tribe selfie,
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: Oh you do?
- 1:53:50Speaker 2: And my video wines. I have a little button so
- 1:53:52Speaker 2: I set it up and got to do the dance
- 1:53:55Speaker 2: video of the trade. Yeah good. I know. People are like,
- 1:53:59Speaker 2: who follows you?
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: Truman? Can't be I know because I was like somebody's
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: taking photos because their photos are always really great.
- 1:54:04Speaker 2: You don't run about yourself and like of course I do.
- 1:54:06Speaker 1: It's iPhone or like cell phone iPhone. All right, there noses.
- 1:54:11Speaker 2: And that makes people smile too, because they're like, oh,
- 1:54:14Speaker 2: we look forward to seeing these funny videos that you do,
- 1:54:16Speaker 2: your music videos, and it just gets people out the
- 1:54:18Speaker 2: door because they're like, oh ship like she's having Okay,
- 1:54:21Speaker 2: we're going.
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: To go run today, right. It makes it less intimidating. Yeah,
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: you know, you're like, I'm going to run this and
- 1:54:26Speaker 1: it's super scary. I'm out with Truman and he's wearing
- 1:54:30Speaker 1: ski ski goggles and what is happening here? It looks
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: like I mean sometimes it looks like no, it looks
- 1:54:39Speaker 1: like like you're You're like, are you on the set
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: of Mad Max? Like it's there's something post apocalyptic about
- 1:54:46Speaker 1: the whole thing.
- 1:54:47Speaker 2: Truman.
- 1:54:48Speaker 1: Yeah, so what are you now? You've done these to
- 1:54:51Speaker 1: these three two hundreds, Like what's next? You just go
- 1:54:54Speaker 1: right into the next race?
- 1:54:56Speaker 2: Or yeah, I had in between eleven day break for
- 1:54:58Speaker 2: my next hundred miles, and I yeah, I'm like, how
- 1:55:02Speaker 2: curious doing it? You know? But I'm going for my
- 1:55:04Speaker 2: tenth that have Alena one hundred and last year I
- 1:55:06Speaker 2: had did Moab two forty because I was the first
- 1:55:08Speaker 2: year they had it and eleven days later did the
- 1:55:11Speaker 2: one hundred miles or Not'm like never again, never again,
- 1:55:14Speaker 2: And then I'm like, oh, crap, I have to because
- 1:55:16Speaker 2: I'm going for number ten now.
- 1:55:17Speaker 1: So yeah, yeah, so that's coming up when.
- 1:55:21Speaker 2: It's next Friday, our Saturday. But I love that race
- 1:55:25Speaker 2: because I wear costume every year. It's always right before Halloween.
- 1:55:28Speaker 2: It's like a big party. If I was ever to
- 1:55:30Speaker 2: suggest somebody to do the first hundred that wanted to
- 1:55:33Speaker 2: be kind of low key about it, it's loop. It's
- 1:55:35Speaker 2: twenty mile loops. Do have Alena, It's like a party.
- 1:55:38Speaker 1: Yeah, and that what you do Arizona does.
- 1:55:40Speaker 2: It's hot, it's going to be warm probably, but I've
- 1:55:42Speaker 2: been looking at the temperature doesn't look much over eighty.
- 1:55:45Speaker 2: So keeping my fingers crossed.
- 1:55:47Speaker 1: What's the costume you're gonna wear.
- 1:55:49Speaker 2: I'm gonna be uh what is what is the name?
- 1:55:53Speaker 2: Oh my god? They from Alice in Wonderland? The it
- 1:56:00Speaker 2: what is his name?
- 1:56:02Speaker 1: I'm blanking right now?
- 1:56:03Speaker 2: Oh know me too, and I have it's not good
- 1:56:05Speaker 2: right at home. I was going to be her, and
- 1:56:07Speaker 2: then I was like, no, I got to be the
- 1:56:09Speaker 2: the white rat mad Hatter, thank.
- 1:56:11Speaker 1: You mad Yes, of course my daughter was just the
- 1:56:15Speaker 1: mad Hatter.
- 1:56:15Speaker 2: And I can't well, I have had so many costumes
- 1:56:18Speaker 2: every year and something, so yeah, I got this like
- 1:56:20Speaker 2: dialed in costume faking.
- 1:56:22Speaker 1: It's like, it's okay, we can have a brand.
- 1:56:24Speaker 2: I know I can't have a I ran two in
- 1:56:26Speaker 2: a forty miles on my brains down. So yeah, and
- 1:56:30Speaker 2: I just have to finish making my little hat and
- 1:56:32Speaker 2: I'm all set.
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: I was ready to like the full black top hat
- 1:56:35Speaker 1: with the plane.
- 1:56:36Speaker 2: Yeah, so I'm going to do that. And I have
- 1:56:38Speaker 2: to make like a little watch on there, and I
- 1:56:40Speaker 2: have the little rabbit ears on there, and I'm carrying
- 1:56:42Speaker 2: a little rabbit. I was carried like a prop. So
- 1:56:44Speaker 2: I'll pin it to the back of my pack, the
- 1:56:46Speaker 2: white rabbit.
- 1:56:47Speaker 1: It's just getting more surreal.
- 1:56:48Speaker 2: Yeah, you'll see the costume. I love it.
- 1:56:51Speaker 1: All right, we got to wind this down, but uh,
- 1:56:53Speaker 1: I want to end this with some some inspiration for
- 1:56:57Speaker 1: people that are feeling stuck in their life, like maybe
- 1:57:03Speaker 1: that ship has sailed, you know. I think it's so
- 1:57:05Speaker 1: inspiring what you do and the way that you do it.
- 1:57:09Speaker 1: It just makes like I said, it makes people feel
- 1:57:12Speaker 1: comfortable taking a leap of faith or getting outside their
- 1:57:14Speaker 1: comfort zone because you make it fun and you make
- 1:57:18Speaker 1: it accessible. So if somebody's sitting on the couch or
- 1:57:21Speaker 1: they're rubber banding in and out of whatever lifestyle have
- 1:57:25Speaker 1: it they're trying to adopt, Like, how can we get
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: people to understand that the things that you do are
- 1:57:32Speaker 1: not necessarily unique to you but available to everybody.
- 1:57:37Speaker 2: They got to get out and just find their passion
- 1:57:39Speaker 2: and just have fun. Don't go into it trying to
- 1:57:42Speaker 2: be so serious. Maybe if you want to start running
- 1:57:45Speaker 2: or you want to get outdoors to make yourself feel better,
- 1:57:47Speaker 2: just start by hiking. Just get out and breathe the air,
- 1:57:50Speaker 2: go out for a walk and look at the flowers,
- 1:57:53Speaker 2: look at the plants, look at the trees. I mean
- 1:57:55Speaker 2: that to me, just getting out is the first step.
- 1:57:59Speaker 2: You don't have to be runner or do one hundred
- 1:58:01Speaker 2: miles or do whatever, but get out and then see
- 1:58:04Speaker 2: what the world has to offer and change, of course,
- 1:58:07Speaker 2: change the way you eat. Eating healthy definitely will help
- 1:58:10Speaker 2: your mindset too. And I think that's a big part
- 1:58:13Speaker 2: of when I got into recovery that it did help
- 1:58:15Speaker 2: me was eating healthy. You know, not eating the junk
- 1:58:19Speaker 2: and the toxic stuff, and just getting rid of toxicity
- 1:58:21Speaker 2: in my life. So just get out and enjoy it
- 1:58:25Speaker 2: and just find your passion.
- 1:58:26Speaker 1: These things are cumulative, you know, they're not unrelated to
- 1:58:30Speaker 1: each other. You start taking care of yourself in one way,
- 1:58:33Speaker 1: and then you're more more encouraged to take care of
- 1:58:36Speaker 1: yourself in other ways. And when I look at your
- 1:58:39Speaker 1: story and your life and your trajectory, I mean, it's
- 1:58:42Speaker 1: so dramatic and crazy that you went from this place
- 1:58:45Speaker 1: of where you were to what you're doing now and
- 1:58:47Speaker 1: you're just continuing to crush it.
- 1:58:50Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:58:50Speaker 1: It's just it's so awesome.
- 1:58:51Speaker 2: I was meant to be on this planet for a
- 1:58:54Speaker 2: reason and to inspire other. A's always say, you know,
- 1:58:57Speaker 2: it's like I tried to commit suicide and like it
- 1:59:00Speaker 2: didn't happen because I'm supposed to be here.
- 1:59:02Speaker 1: So well, I'm glad you are.
- 1:59:05Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:59:05Speaker 1: Cool. So the book is called Reborn on the Run?
- 1:59:10Speaker 1: Are you out like doing talk? So like, is there
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: a way for people to if they want to come?
- 1:59:14Speaker 2: And yeah, so they can actually if they want to
- 1:59:18Speaker 2: even get a copy, they can get it on Amazon
- 1:59:20Speaker 2: or they can actually email me my websites almost finished.
- 1:59:24Speaker 2: But they can email me at Dirt Diva three three
- 1:59:27Speaker 2: three at gmail dot com if they want an autograph copy,
- 1:59:29Speaker 2: and I can send that out to them and they
- 1:59:31Speaker 2: can get it through that way. But my website will
- 1:59:33Speaker 2: be up and they'll be able to order.
- 1:59:34Speaker 1: You get your website done when your book comes out,
- 1:59:37Speaker 1: it's you're too busy running too Yeah, well.
- 1:59:41Speaker 2: Dude, I'm like trying to find somebody to do it
- 1:59:43Speaker 2: for me, and he came up with this great way.
- 1:59:45Speaker 1: He had the base jump off of rock.
- 1:59:46Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, so he just did it. Why I was
- 1:59:49Speaker 2: out running the two hundred and forty, he's like finally
- 1:59:51Speaker 2: had time to sit down because he's working two jobs
- 1:59:53Speaker 2: and he's a busy body guy and running and so.
- 1:59:56Speaker 2: But yeah, so it's finally getting done. But i'll be
- 1:59:59Speaker 2: My next book signing is in December first at Running
- 2:00:03Speaker 2: Skirts in San Diego, and I'll be out have Alina
- 2:00:06Speaker 2: doing a book signing. You'll be selling my book there
- 2:00:07Speaker 2: at one hundred mile Er next.
- 2:00:09Speaker 1: Week, so awesome, And if people want to connect with
- 2:00:11Speaker 1: you online, you're at dirt Diva three three three three,
- 2:00:15Speaker 1: So how many threes? Three threes three what's the deal.
- 2:00:18Speaker 2: With the hut. I'm just obsessed with the number three.
- 2:00:20Speaker 2: Three threes is like way more luckier, Like it's a
- 2:00:22Speaker 2: better number, and it's like a positive number. If you
- 2:00:25Speaker 2: look up three three three, it's a very like the
- 2:00:27Speaker 2: angels and positive things are always around you when you
- 2:00:29Speaker 2: have that number. And I see that when I look
- 2:00:31Speaker 2: at my watch or my phone a few times a week,
- 2:00:34Speaker 2: I see three three three, or I'll see a car
- 2:00:36Speaker 2: go by, or I'll see those numbers. I'm looking at
- 2:00:39Speaker 2: the watch.
- 2:00:41Speaker 1: What time is it right now? Wouldn't it be, oh
- 2:00:43Speaker 1: my god, you know what, it's like five of three
- 2:00:45Speaker 1: right now? If it was three thirty three right now,
- 2:00:48Speaker 1: I might.
- 2:00:49Speaker 2: I see that a lot. But yeah, I'm just obsessed
- 2:00:52Speaker 2: with that number three.
- 2:00:53Speaker 1: And then Instagram.
- 2:00:54Speaker 2: Now Instagram is dirt Diva three three three, and Twitter
- 2:00:58Speaker 2: is dirt Diva thirty three that for some reason. And
- 2:01:02Speaker 2: then Facebook. I have an athlete page because my regular
- 2:01:05Speaker 2: page is full, which is like whatever, So I have
- 2:01:08Speaker 2: an athlete page. And Truman has a page too.
