Latest / Birdland Territory / O's looking to regroup after taking two straight from Miami
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: The regrouping has begun. After the Orioles got blitzed in
- 0:11Speaker 1: New York, they go to Miami and win the first
- 0:13Speaker 1: two of the series, and tonight can sweep the Marlins
- 0:16Speaker 1: at Lone Depot Park. And that's a little better Birdland Territory.
- 0:21Speaker 1: And this is our fifteenth show. We're rolling right along
- 0:24Speaker 1: here cranking them out. Steve Maluski, Brad Brock, Tin Barbelace
- 0:29Speaker 1: and Glad you've joined us. Please subscribe to the channel
- 0:31Speaker 1: and follow us on our podcast networks too, And we're
- 0:36Speaker 1: also on x at Birdland Territory, so check that out. So, guys,
- 0:41Speaker 1: that's much better for the Orioles. They weren't perfect wins,
- 0:45Speaker 1: but they were wins, and I think right now, Brad,
- 0:47Speaker 1: they need any kind of wins they can get as
- 0:50Speaker 1: many as they can roll off of at a time
- 0:53Speaker 1: when the America League has twelve I can't believe this
- 0:56Speaker 1: is true, twelve losing records. The Orioles are in the
- 0:59Speaker 1: playoff by being a couple of games under. They don't
- 1:02Speaker 1: want that to be their final vestination. But for now,
- 1:06Speaker 1: two wins feels a lot better.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure, especially after that weekend. You know, it
- 1:10Speaker 2: was a little dire the last show we did, losing
- 1:13Speaker 2: four in a row to the Yankees heading down to Miami.
- 1:15Speaker 2: You just didn't know what was going to happen in
- 1:17Speaker 2: this series based off what we saw those four games
- 1:19Speaker 2: this past weekend. So you're right, though, any wins are
- 1:22Speaker 2: good wins right now. It doesn't matter how they get
- 1:25Speaker 2: it done or what it looks like. It's just a
- 1:26Speaker 2: win and that's all you can really do at this point,
- 1:28Speaker 2: just kind of keep pace with the American League, where
- 1:31Speaker 2: you know, nobody's really kind of running away with it
- 1:33Speaker 2: right now. So it's wins are great, and the offense
- 1:36Speaker 2: is kind of looking how we kind of expected. It's
- 1:38Speaker 2: looking like it's running on all cylinders. They have the
- 1:41Speaker 2: big hitters starting to hit right now and they're kind
- 1:43Speaker 2: of carrying this team.
- 1:44Speaker 3: And that's what you need from this offense.
- 1:47Speaker 4: When you're at a rut like the Orioles were heading
- 1:50Speaker 4: to Miami, thirst style points out the window. You're just
- 1:54Speaker 4: trying to survive in advance, you're trying to win. And
- 1:57Speaker 4: you can get to that game too today where yeah,
- 2:00Speaker 4: it was great. Adleie Rutschman, Craig Albernass pushing the right button,
- 2:04Speaker 4: pinch hitting for a red hot fanwel Besio Adley ended
- 2:07Speaker 4: up coming through Leodi Taveres with the attack on run.
- 2:10Speaker 4: But the Orioles they blew two three run leads in
- 2:13Speaker 4: that game. But you know what, it doesn't matter. And
- 2:16Speaker 4: yesterday it was more steady. And in both of those games, guys,
- 2:20Speaker 4: they were able to get off to quick starts. They
- 2:23Speaker 4: scored three runs in the first inning of both of
- 2:26Speaker 4: those ball games, and that was huge.
- 2:28Speaker 3: That was huge.
- 2:29Speaker 4: And going from five straight games in which they didn't
- 2:33Speaker 4: lead at all to where these past two games they
- 2:37Speaker 4: haven't trailed at all.
- 2:40Speaker 2: You know what, Also, when you look at the offense,
- 2:42Speaker 2: we've been talking about how they scored early or late,
- 2:45Speaker 2: and now that the add on runs have been.
- 2:47Speaker 3: Huge these games.
- 2:47Speaker 2: And that's really where good offenses turned into great offenses.
- 2:51Speaker 2: When you're able to add those tack on runs extend
- 2:53Speaker 2: the leads, you lose the lead, you take the lead back,
- 2:56Speaker 2: and that's really what you want to see from an offense,
- 2:58Speaker 2: not so much score ton early and then do nothing
- 3:01Speaker 2: the rest of the game or have to come back
- 3:03Speaker 2: at the end and score runs like they have been doing.
- 3:05Speaker 2: They've been able to attack on runs there in the
- 3:07Speaker 2: middle innings, which have been huge, especially in these last
- 3:09Speaker 2: two games.
- 3:11Speaker 1: So the Oils went from a five game losing streak
- 3:14Speaker 1: during which they were outscored fifty to fifteen to a
- 3:17Speaker 1: two game winning streak during which they've outscored Miami sixteen
- 3:21Speaker 1: to eleven. So some runs are coming and finally some
- 3:24Speaker 1: run prevention was coming. Last night, the Ools had a
- 3:27Speaker 1: little stretch of I think six straight games they gave
- 3:29Speaker 1: up seven or more. Runs. That won't work, but four
- 3:32Speaker 1: is more like it. And Brad Brandon Young, he gave
- 3:37Speaker 1: it up in the first and no doubt every Oil
- 3:39Speaker 1: fan said, here we go again. Three nothing, lead is gone.
- 3:43Speaker 1: And who knew he was going to turn it around
- 3:45Speaker 1: to the dramatic nature he did, and he said I
- 3:48Speaker 1: had no choice, and so I guess he didn't. But man,
- 3:53Speaker 1: the execution for second inning on pretty special.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Yeah, it was fun to watch. I mean that first thing,
- 3:59Speaker 2: I gotta take some guys. Last night it was like,
- 4:00Speaker 2: oh no, here's the astro game all over again. But
- 4:03Speaker 2: he was he was outstanding. I mean, he got the
- 4:06Speaker 2: first I think they said the first two batters out
- 4:08Speaker 2: in every inning that he pitched last night, and unfortunately
- 4:11Speaker 2: the first inning he had a couple walks there that
- 4:13Speaker 2: kind of led to the three runs, but after that
- 4:15Speaker 2: he really just attacked with his fastball. I think it's
- 4:18Speaker 2: it's you go into a game with the game plan,
- 4:20Speaker 2: and I think sometimes when you have a really good
- 4:23Speaker 2: fastball like he had last night, you really have to
- 4:25Speaker 2: lean in on that, regardless of what the scating report says.
- 4:27Speaker 2: And I think they made some adjustments after that first inning,
- 4:30Speaker 2: and he just attacked the guys. They couldn't square up
- 4:32Speaker 2: his fastball, even though he didn't have the best location
- 4:35Speaker 2: with it. He had such ride on his fastball last night.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Every single Marlins hitter was just popping the balls up.
- 4:40Speaker 2: I mean he was having one pitches kind of middle in,
- 4:44Speaker 2: middle up, and guys were just popping them up.
- 4:46Speaker 3: They weren't able to do anything with it.
- 4:47Speaker 2: And I think he really just leaned into that and
- 4:49Speaker 2: just kind of rode his fastball for the entire start.
- 4:51Speaker 2: It was it was fun to watch, and it's it's
- 4:53Speaker 2: great to see a guy who had a rough start
- 4:55Speaker 2: his last one come out, have a really bad first
- 4:57Speaker 2: inning but then put up six our five scoreless innings
- 5:01Speaker 2: after that and get through the sixth inning, which is
- 5:03Speaker 2: this staff really needed.
- 5:05Speaker 3: With the stretch they have coming.
- 5:06Speaker 4: Up, it really really needed that from Brandon Young. And
- 5:11Speaker 4: you're right, Brad, it has to be human nature for
- 5:14Speaker 4: him to think for the club to think, oh my gosh,
- 5:17Speaker 4: here we go again. With how disastrous the Astros game was,
- 5:21Speaker 4: where the Orioles were down five to nothing before they
- 5:24Speaker 4: even took an at bad and that game got away
- 5:26Speaker 4: from him. And I remember Brandon Young really upseted himself
- 5:31Speaker 4: talking to the media after that game, saying, man like,
- 5:34Speaker 4: I thought these blow up starts were behind me after
- 5:37Speaker 4: last year. So for him to bear down. And by
- 5:41Speaker 4: the way, that first inning he got those first two
- 5:43Speaker 4: outs on four pitches and then ran into trouble where
- 5:47Speaker 4: five consecutive guys ended up reaching for him to retire
- 5:52Speaker 4: sixteen of the final eighteen batters seven straight. Really really
- 5:57Speaker 4: impressive stuff. And you said it, Brad. The fastball with him.
- 6:01Speaker 4: He got seven swings and misses on that fastball, but
- 6:04Speaker 4: he also got strike one on that fastball. First pitch
- 6:08Speaker 4: strikes that were fastballs. Last night, he got first pitch
- 6:12Speaker 4: strikes in thirteen of those seventeen chances. That's really really good.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Yeah. For me. The biggest thing was he kind of
- 6:21Speaker 3: seemed a little tentative. Early in that first inning.
- 6:23Speaker 2: He was going to a lot of all speeding, almost
- 6:25Speaker 2: like trying to make things happen as opposed to just
- 6:28Speaker 2: attacking them and saying, here it is, here's my fastball,
- 6:31Speaker 2: see how far you can hit it. And he was
- 6:32Speaker 2: just really aggressive in his zone, which was really impressive
- 6:35Speaker 2: and fun to watch.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Pitch efficient. Ninety three pitches got him six innings, so
- 6:40Speaker 1: it was averaging about fifteen an inning, one hit aloud
- 6:44Speaker 1: from the second inning on, and tim all the talk
- 6:47Speaker 1: of two out runs while he gave some up in
- 6:49Speaker 1: the first inning and they didn't give up anything after
- 6:52Speaker 1: where it doesn't matter how many outs he was. He
- 6:54Speaker 1: was rolling. And you guys are right. You leaned on
- 6:56Speaker 1: the fastball fifty five percent four seams last night. We
- 6:59Speaker 1: don't we'll see a lot of games in the major
- 7:01Speaker 1: leagues anymore where the starter throws over fifty percent fastball.
- 7:05Speaker 1: He had it going and his other pitches were way
- 7:07Speaker 1: down percentage wise. He realized I could lean on that
- 7:11Speaker 1: and that ride. You talk about this induced vertible break
- 7:14Speaker 1: they talk about, which essentially means you can pitch up
- 7:18Speaker 1: better than other pitchers, and I guess he had that
- 7:20Speaker 1: going to last night, Brad, so I got I give
- 7:23Speaker 1: this guy a lot of credit. I mean, his career
- 7:25Speaker 1: ore is pretty high, and he didn't have great stats
- 7:27Speaker 1: last year, but outside of the one blip, and it
- 7:30Speaker 1: was it was a tough blip, he's doing some really
- 7:33Speaker 1: good things for this team when they got a couple
- 7:35Speaker 1: guys on the injured list from the starters.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Yeah, and also too, I think for him, I love
- 7:40Speaker 2: seeing a great start after kind of knowing Trevor Rodgers
- 7:43Speaker 2: is coming, that looming decision being made here, and he
- 7:46Speaker 2: really it just seemed like his demeanor change after that
- 7:49Speaker 2: first inning. It was he went into attack mode, and
- 7:51Speaker 2: it was he was a very much different and more
- 7:55Speaker 2: confident pitcher after that first inning, and it was it
- 7:57Speaker 2: was fun to see.
- 7:58Speaker 3: And that's when he's at his best.
- 7:59Speaker 2: I've seen a few of his really good starts and
- 8:01Speaker 2: he's just attacking guys. He's going right at him, he's
- 8:04Speaker 2: getting strike one and he's making that he's forcing them
- 8:06Speaker 2: put the ball in play.
- 8:07Speaker 3: He's not a huge strikeout guy.
- 8:08Speaker 2: They'll get his swings of missus here and there, but
- 8:10Speaker 2: when he's really attacking the zone, he's getting early contact.
- 8:13Speaker 3: That's when he's at his best and.
- 8:16Speaker 4: Go ahead, Ken No, I was gonna say, and Brad,
- 8:19Speaker 4: it's a good point in bringing up the Trevor Rodgers
- 8:22Speaker 4: of it all, where I'm sure that's in the back
- 8:25Speaker 4: of his head. But at the end of the day,
- 8:27Speaker 4: if you're Brandon Young, you just have to control what
- 8:29Speaker 4: you can control, and that's going out giving your team
- 8:32Speaker 4: a chance to win that game. Start to stack back
- 8:35Speaker 4: to back wins, and that's exactly what he did.
- 8:40Speaker 1: He sure did a great outing for Brandon Young after
- 8:43Speaker 1: a shaky start and the oil skint a victory. Taylor
- 8:47Speaker 1: Ward is drawing a ton of walks. Gunner Henderson unfortunately
- 8:51Speaker 1: right now, is piling up a ton of strikeouts. We're
- 8:54Speaker 1: gonna check in on both those players in a moment
- 8:57Speaker 1: on Birdland territoryfe Ft family. I know it's an important

- 10:00Speaker 1: Guys with Gunner Henderson. Right now, the stats are not there.
- 10:03Speaker 1: He's hitting two h one ops six ninety one, well
- 10:06Speaker 1: under what we would expect and he would expect, and
- 10:10Speaker 1: the cap percentage is way up thirty one point five,
- 10:14Speaker 1: career worse for him, well over. You know, in twenty
- 10:17Speaker 1: twenty four great year cap percentage was twenty two point one,
- 10:21Speaker 1: very reasonable, last year twenty one point zero, now thirty one.
- 10:26Speaker 1: What do you guys see that's creating the swing and
- 10:28Speaker 1: miss for Gunner right now.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I kind of went and just kind
- 10:32Speaker 2: of watched his bats the last couple of games and
- 10:34Speaker 2: just kind of seeing how maybe it was more of
- 10:37Speaker 2: how the pitches were attacking him or the swings he
- 10:39Speaker 2: was taking. But right now he's just he's not getting
- 10:42Speaker 2: to the inside fastball. Last night he was getting challenged
- 10:45Speaker 2: inside with the inside fastball, and I feel like for Gunner,
- 10:48Speaker 2: if he's not able to get to that pitch, it
- 10:50Speaker 2: gets really hard to cover the rest of the play.
- 10:53Speaker 2: It was a pretty apparent attack last night they had
- 10:56Speaker 2: on him. It was fastball's in and then it was
- 10:58Speaker 2: all speed away, and I think he's just kind of
- 11:00Speaker 2: caught in between bull swings. And I feel like for
- 11:02Speaker 2: a hitter, if you're not able to get to the
- 11:04Speaker 2: inside fastball, it makes everything else a lot more tough.
- 11:08Speaker 2: And I think that's kind of where he is right now.
- 11:09Speaker 2: He's kind of stuck trying to get to the inside fastball,
- 11:12Speaker 2: and then you're just not able to cover away when
- 11:14Speaker 2: you start seeing the off speed pitches. So last night
- 11:17Speaker 2: it was just I mean, that picture Perez is that's
- 11:20Speaker 2: some of the nastiest stuff you'll see a starter have
- 11:22Speaker 2: in the league, and he just kind of got he
- 11:24Speaker 2: was getting beat inside and it happens. But I think
- 11:27Speaker 2: it's kind of becoming a trend, and it'll be interesting
- 11:30Speaker 2: to see if pitchers continue to attack him the same
- 11:32Speaker 2: way they have the last couple nights.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Brad.
- 11:35Speaker 4: We had Ben McDonald on my show on one of
- 11:37Speaker 4: five Seventh Fan yesterday or two days ago, and we
- 11:40Speaker 4: were asking him about Gunner and he made an interesting
- 11:44Speaker 4: point in saying, maybe one of the worst things that
- 11:48Speaker 4: could have happened to him was him having that stretch
- 11:51Speaker 4: of a bunch of homers in a row. I think
- 11:53Speaker 4: he hit four home runs in five games, where Ben
- 11:57Speaker 4: thinks that maybe he's getting a little too homer hapy
- 12:00Speaker 4: be maybe a little too much swinging for the fences.
- 12:03Speaker 3: Could that be an issue? Do you see something like that?
- 12:07Speaker 3: It could be. I definitely know what Ben's saying.
- 12:09Speaker 2: I think a lot of times when especially when it
- 12:10Speaker 2: happens early in the season, you kind of sit there
- 12:13Speaker 2: and you start doing what you're doing.
- 12:16Speaker 3: But that's not what gives you success.
- 12:17Speaker 2: And I think for gunn or what gives him success
- 12:20Speaker 2: is hitting to all fields. And I think when you
- 12:22Speaker 2: start getting pull happy, you start pulling off everything, So
- 12:25Speaker 2: when he starts missing the inside fastball, he's not able
- 12:28Speaker 2: to drive the off speed the other way, which I
- 12:30Speaker 2: think makes him one of the most elite hitters in
- 12:31Speaker 2: the game, is when he starts hitting that ball to
- 12:33Speaker 2: left center field. And we talked about Pete kind of
- 12:36Speaker 2: it's I think it's very similar what's happening to Gunner
- 12:38Speaker 2: right now. What was happening to Pete early in the season.
- 12:40Speaker 2: He was seeing so many off speed pitches that he
- 12:43Speaker 2: wasn't able to get to the fastball. So when they
- 12:45Speaker 2: were missing with fastballs, fastballs were getting by him. And
- 12:48Speaker 2: he was so used to seeing so many off speed
- 12:50Speaker 2: that when he was missing the off speed, he couldn't
- 12:52Speaker 2: catch up to the fastball. And I think it's a
- 12:54Speaker 2: similar situation what we're seeing with Gunner right now. I
- 12:56Speaker 2: think Ben's right. I think he was getting a little
- 12:58Speaker 2: bit too, a little bit two pool happy, and I
- 13:01Speaker 2: think that's it can kind of throw your game off,
- 13:03Speaker 2: and when you don't know, when you can't get to
- 13:06Speaker 2: the enti basketball like I think Gunner can on a
- 13:08Speaker 2: regular basis, it just throws everything off and you're trying
- 13:11Speaker 2: to play catch up. And when you're playing catch up
- 13:12Speaker 2: at the big leagues, especially with the stuff they've seen
- 13:14Speaker 2: the last two or three series, it makes it really
- 13:17Speaker 2: hard to be a hitter at that level.
- 13:19Speaker 4: And with those numbers, because Mason's been flashing those graphics recently,
- 13:24Speaker 4: the Orioles have seen the second fewest fastballs in the
- 13:27Speaker 4: majors this year. And I know a lot of people
- 13:30Speaker 4: like to poke fun at Colden Cowser just with the
- 13:33Speaker 4: lack of fastballs that he's seeing this year and the
- 13:36Speaker 4: off speed being way up. But this is a team
- 13:38Speaker 4: wide thing. This isn't just Colden Kowser and Gunner Henderson
- 13:42Speaker 4: is one part of that.
- 13:43Speaker 1: Brad.
- 13:43Speaker 4: When I was looking at his Baseball Savant page this morning,
- 13:47Speaker 4: Gunner's three for twenty nine with nine strikeouts on off
- 13:50Speaker 4: speed pitches. He's fourteen for seventy six. That's a one
- 13:54Speaker 4: eighty four average with twenty nine strikeouts on breaking an
- 13:59Speaker 4: off speed pitches. And if you look at the fastball
- 14:02Speaker 4: percentages that Gunner is seeing year over year, it's down
- 14:08Speaker 4: eight point two percent. That is a substantial difference year
- 14:13Speaker 4: over years. So clearly pitchers are seeing something and Gunner
- 14:17Speaker 4: now has to make that adjustment.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think with all the data and analytics
- 14:22Speaker 2: you have. Now, if you have a hole, it's gonna
- 14:24Speaker 2: be exposed until you fix it. And these teams are
- 14:27Speaker 2: just gonna constantly go back to the well on what
- 14:30Speaker 2: you're struggling with when they don't have to make any adjustment.
- 14:32Speaker 2: So it's with the I think with the analytics stuff,
- 14:36Speaker 2: it's it's the game planning has become so much better
- 14:39Speaker 2: because it's there's no there's no like hiding anything, there's
- 14:42Speaker 2: no being able to stay away from anything. It's if
- 14:45Speaker 2: you're struggling with something, you're gonna see tons of it
- 14:47Speaker 2: in today. With the Marlins pitcher Meyer I think it's Meyer.
- 14:51Speaker 2: He he throws a ton of off speed pitches I
- 14:54Speaker 2: saw my last year in Triple A. I mean I
- 14:57Speaker 2: think he was throwing seventy five percent sliders. It makes
- 14:59Speaker 2: Kyle Bradis on some of these starts look like he's
- 15:02Speaker 2: throwing off fastball. So it'll be interesting to see today because,
- 15:05Speaker 2: like you said, the data is shown they're struggling on
- 15:07Speaker 2: off speed and this guy really goes to the well
- 15:10Speaker 2: on all speed pitchers. So it's gonna be interesting to
- 15:12Speaker 2: see if he sticks to that game plan. And to me,
- 15:14Speaker 2: that's what I love watching. When I watch these games,
- 15:16Speaker 2: it's what is going to be done. Are they going
- 15:18Speaker 2: to stick to what has been working and what he
- 15:20Speaker 2: does best, or they change something up because they've lost
- 15:23Speaker 2: the last two games. I think he's gonna lean very
- 15:25Speaker 2: heavy on a slider today, but it'll be interesting to
- 15:27Speaker 2: see how he goes about his game.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Plantat Cast gives us so much data, but sometimes you
- 15:35Speaker 1: can look at a number and it feels, oh, this
- 15:38Speaker 1: is big and for me. In twenty twenty four, when
- 15:41Speaker 1: Gunner was an MVP candidate, he was in the top
- 15:44Speaker 1: sixteen percent in what they call chase percentage. He wasn't chasing.
- 15:49Speaker 1: He was one of the best. Now he's in the
- 15:51Speaker 1: bottom twenty eight percent, top sixteen two years later, bottom
- 15:56Speaker 1: twenty eight. It's hard enough to hit the strikes. Gunners
- 16:00Speaker 1: now missing some of them. As you said, Brad pound
- 16:03Speaker 1: him in. He's not getting to that ball. But now
- 16:05Speaker 1: he's expanding too. When you lose confidence as a hitter,
- 16:09Speaker 1: you start to expand. And when hitter, when pitchers see
- 16:12Speaker 1: that Brad, you know on a scouting report, it's like
- 16:15Speaker 1: a shark seeing get you. It's go time to get
- 16:19Speaker 1: ahead and expand and get outs.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's that's it right there, that's in a nutshell,
- 16:24Speaker 2: it's it's throws strike one. And right now, I mean
- 16:27Speaker 2: they're being super aggressive in the zone and Gunner and
- 16:30Speaker 2: he he had a single the other night through the
- 16:32Speaker 2: through the right side. But I think they're just confident.
- 16:34Speaker 2: If they can get strike one, then from there it's
- 16:36Speaker 2: you don't even have to throw a strike.
- 16:37Speaker 3: You can be out of the zone.
- 16:39Speaker 2: You can make him expand and when you're when you
- 16:41Speaker 2: see hitter scuffling, you know, And that's just basically where
- 16:45Speaker 2: Gunners are right now. He's trying to make things happen
- 16:48Speaker 2: as opposed to when he's at his best, he kind
- 16:50Speaker 2: of lets the game come to him.
- 16:51Speaker 3: And I think just right now he's just he's a
- 16:53Speaker 3: little bit.
- 16:53Speaker 2: Outside his own, probably losing his zone just a little
- 16:56Speaker 2: bit because he's trying to go out and get these
- 16:57Speaker 2: pitches that he knows he should be hitting. And when
- 16:59Speaker 2: you missed the one you know you should hit, it
- 17:01Speaker 2: makes you frustrated and then you start to expand even more.
- 17:03Speaker 2: And I think that's kind of where it's at right now.
- 17:05Speaker 2: And it happens to the best hitters in the game,
- 17:08Speaker 2: and it's when hitter and when pitcher see that, that's
- 17:10Speaker 2: what they do, exactly what you said. You just you
- 17:12Speaker 2: get strike one, then you can expand and go anywhere
- 17:14Speaker 2: you want from there.
- 17:16Speaker 1: Exactly. So Gunner's too good for this to not pass.
- 17:21Speaker 1: It will at some point, but right now really struggling
- 17:24Speaker 1: on this road trip and trying to get it galling.
- 17:27Speaker 1: Thanks for watching today, Berdland Territory. Hope you'll subscribe to
- 17:30Speaker 1: our channel time for daily Dingers presented by FanDuel and
- 17:41Speaker 1: tonight you talk about an orio who might hit one out.
- 17:44Speaker 1: He's hit out a lot in Lone Depot Park. I'm
- 17:47Speaker 1: talking about Pete Alonzo. Freddy Freeman is the all time
- 17:51Speaker 1: leader in that park with eighteen homers. Next is Pete
- 17:54Speaker 1: Alonzo at sixteen and he got one last night. What
- 17:57Speaker 1: a swing. That was ninety eight on the corner. It
- 18:01Speaker 1: was zero to two and he hit it four hundred
- 18:04Speaker 1: to center. This is how locked in he is right now.
- 18:07Speaker 1: And remember when we were talking about, oh, is he
- 18:09Speaker 1: having trouble with his bat speed, He's not having any
- 18:12Speaker 1: trouble with his bat speed. His exit velocity, by the way,
- 18:15Speaker 1: is better than some guys who have ridiculous exit velocities
- 18:19Speaker 1: over the years. So a lot's going right for this
- 18:21Speaker 1: guy right now.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Yeah, he looks great, he looks locked in, and he
- 18:25Speaker 2: kind of talked about it after the game last night,
- 18:28Speaker 2: just how he's comfortable there. When you play in division
- 18:30Speaker 2: at a ballpark for so long, there's just certain parks
- 18:33Speaker 2: there you see the ball better. Unfortunately, Kenny Yards is
- 18:36Speaker 2: usually one of those places for opposing hitters. And when everybody,
- 18:40Speaker 2: anybody came in town, I was like, I don't even
- 18:41Speaker 2: want to talk if I knew them, I was like,
- 18:43Speaker 2: I don't even want to talk to you. I know
- 18:44Speaker 2: you see the ball well here, don't want to hear it.
- 18:46Speaker 2: And I think that's how it is for Pete right now.
- 18:48Speaker 2: I don't think anybody's trying to come say hi to
- 18:50Speaker 2: him because they know that he's just seen it. Well.
- 18:52Speaker 2: It's a very friendly ballpark. There's not a big crowd.
- 18:56Speaker 2: Usually they have a huge blue hitters high in center field.
- 18:59Speaker 2: I was like, pitch on the mound there. But apparently
- 19:02Speaker 2: hitters like hitting in the box, and Pete said that
- 19:03Speaker 2: last night. He likes a batter box, he likes a
- 19:06Speaker 2: hitter's eye, and he's seen it really well right now,
- 19:08Speaker 2: and he's swinging the bat really well. Like you said
- 19:10Speaker 2: that pitch last night. When Pete's on, there's not a
- 19:12Speaker 2: pitch he can't hit over the fence. I saw it
- 19:14Speaker 2: as a rookie at Cincinnati. He took a pitch like
- 19:17Speaker 2: ninety six, I mean on the black away and he
- 19:20Speaker 2: hit it out through the smokestacks and right center field
- 19:22Speaker 2: there for the steam Boat Place, and it was one
- 19:25Speaker 2: of the most impressive swings I've seen. And when he's
- 19:27Speaker 2: locked in, he can do that to any pitcher, any count,
- 19:30Speaker 2: any pitch you throw.
- 19:33Speaker 4: He is looking like Pete Alonzo right now. And now
- 19:37Speaker 4: you can look at the season long numbers and they're
- 19:39Speaker 4: really climbing. Seven eighty one ohps. Still not to Pete tight,
- 19:44Speaker 4: but when you look back, we brought it up so
- 19:48Speaker 4: many times on this podcast him after that Giants game
- 19:53Speaker 4: and how emotional he was and how upset he was. Well,
- 19:57Speaker 4: you can go to the final game of that Giant series,
- 20:00Speaker 4: and that now spans twenty three games, so a decent
- 20:03Speaker 4: sample size. Pete's got a ninety nine five ops in
- 20:08Speaker 4: that stretch, seventeen RBIs, six homers, eight doubles, twenty strikeouts
- 20:14Speaker 4: to fourteen walks. That's Pete Alonzo in this stretch.
- 20:20Speaker 1: He had a ball in the ninth inning last night,
- 20:21Speaker 1: one ten point eight that was caught. That was now
- 20:25Speaker 1: the homer was one oh nine point five. I mean,
- 20:28Speaker 1: these are just ridiculous exit velocity. So Pete Alonzo's our
- 20:31Speaker 1: Daily Dinger's pick for the game Thursday night in Miami.

- 21:05Speaker 1: And now on to Taylor Ward. This is crazy. He's
- 21:07Speaker 1: on one hundred and forty four walk pace. The Oriel
- 21:11Speaker 1: team record is one eighteen by Ken Singleton in the
- 21:15Speaker 1: nineteen seventies. That would shatter that. His walk percentage is
- 21:19Speaker 1: way up, his strikeout percentage is way down. That's a
- 21:23Speaker 1: great result for any hitter. Talk about locked in and
- 21:27Speaker 1: talk about chase percentages, which we just were, he's in
- 21:30Speaker 1: the one hundred percentile. He chases less than anybody in
- 21:34Speaker 1: baseball right now, stat Cast is telling us, and we're
- 21:37Speaker 1: seeing that play out every night in the batter's box.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, he knows the strike zone inside out,
- 21:43Speaker 2: upside down. However you want to say he knows the
- 21:45Speaker 2: strike zone right now, and it's I think he's just
- 21:48Speaker 2: making pitchers throw strikes. And I think he's starting to
- 21:51Speaker 2: realize that most major league pitchers you throw over fifty
- 21:54Speaker 2: percent out of his zone, and it's he's waiting for
- 21:56Speaker 2: his pitch when it's in the zone, and if it's not,
- 21:58Speaker 2: he's just taking his free pass and kind of passing
- 22:01Speaker 2: the baton down the line. And I think he's really
- 22:03Speaker 2: setting up this offense to have success and allow the
- 22:06Speaker 2: hitters behind him to knock him in. And it's been
- 22:09Speaker 2: impressive to see and to me, I think it just
- 22:11Speaker 2: leads to him. His power numbers might not be where
- 22:14Speaker 2: what oil fans had expected, but I think they're gonna
- 22:16Speaker 2: go up because pitchers are gonna start realizing you have
- 22:18Speaker 2: to throw the ball on his zone and I think
- 22:20Speaker 2: he's just kind of waiting them out, kind of playing
- 22:22Speaker 2: the cat and mouse game right now. And when he
- 22:23Speaker 2: starts to get those pitches, I think when he gets hot,
- 22:25Speaker 2: he's gonna get really, really hot and start him balls
- 22:27Speaker 2: over the fence.
- 22:30Speaker 4: I almost feel like we're not talking enough about this guy,
- 22:33Speaker 4: and in part we were kind of We've made some jokes,
- 22:37Speaker 4: you know, throughout the off season where Ward was the
- 22:39Speaker 4: first acquisition and then of course Pete gets the massive
- 22:42Speaker 4: contract and he's overshadowed by Pete, which you get. And
- 22:46Speaker 4: he's thinking the star power that this team has with
- 22:49Speaker 4: Gunner Henderson and Atlee Rutchman's having a resurgent ear, and
- 22:53Speaker 4: Samuel Bissio is swinging a red hot bat. Taylor Ward
- 22:58Speaker 4: is flying under the radar for me Gus, and he's
- 23:01Speaker 4: having a fantastic start to the season. And Brad, you're right,
- 23:04Speaker 4: the power numbers aren't there. He's only got the one
- 23:06Speaker 4: home run, But if he keeps getting on base with
- 23:09Speaker 4: the clip that he's getting on I'm fine with that.
- 23:13Speaker 4: Like Taylor Ward, you look at his numbers and this
- 23:15Speaker 4: is just kind of a nutshell. Yesterday, guys, five at bats,
- 23:20Speaker 4: he saw twenty nine pitches, so almost six pitches per
- 23:23Speaker 4: played appearance. Uh, you look at where he ranks in
- 23:27Speaker 4: the majors. He's fourth in the majors in pitches scene
- 23:31Speaker 4: per played appearance at four point four to five pitches
- 23:35Speaker 4: per played appearance. Then you look at the battery numbers,
- 23:40Speaker 4: second in doubles with ty Per, second in doubles at thirteen.
- 23:43Speaker 4: He's third in walks with thirty four, he's third, and
- 23:46Speaker 4: on base percentage four to thirty four on base that's unbelievable,
- 23:52Speaker 4: unbelievable for Taylor Ward the start to the season. And
- 23:56Speaker 4: you know that that was seen when the trade was
- 23:58Speaker 4: made Steve and covered Grayson his old minor league career.
- 24:06Speaker 4: You know the potential that he had and unfortunately injuries
- 24:08Speaker 4: just piled up for Greyson. Then he understand why Michael
- 24:11Speaker 4: Ayas made that trade, but you know it was a trade,
- 24:15Speaker 4: it was when it happened. Grayson has four years of control,
- 24:18Speaker 4: Taylor Ward only has one for right now, Grayson, you
- 24:22Speaker 4: know he started the year on the il and Taylor Ward.
- 24:25Speaker 4: It's been a home run of a trade for Michael Oyas.
- 24:27Speaker 1: Do you well so far he is, He's been a
- 24:31Speaker 1: joy to cover and he told me he really got
- 24:33Speaker 1: locked in on play discipline at college at Fresno State.
- 24:37Speaker 1: His coach told him how important it was and really
- 24:39Speaker 1: emphasized it. And where he played with Aaron Judge by
- 24:42Speaker 1: the way, in college, and then he played with Mike
- 24:45Speaker 1: Trout in the pros. Pretty good one two bunch, But
- 24:48Speaker 1: Taylor Ward is seeing it right now, guys. Twenty point
- 24:51Speaker 1: five walk percentage, that is exceptional. We're going to talk
- 24:55Speaker 1: about Addlee Rutchman. He's got a rolling now too.
- 24:57Speaker 7: That's coming up, Big bad Morning Show Finny and Haney,

- 25:14Speaker 7: One oh five seven the Fan.
- 25:18Speaker 1: If he had enough at bets to qualify for league leaders,
- 25:20Speaker 1: he doesn't quite yet, he would be in the top
- 25:22Speaker 1: twenty and ops. We're talking about Adleie Ritchman. Three point
- 25:26Speaker 1: thirteen average, three sixty eight on base, five sixty three
- 25:30Speaker 1: slug and nine thirty one ops. And oh, by the way,
- 25:34Speaker 1: it's one of the best framers in baseball catching. What
- 25:37Speaker 1: a year man, What a turnaround for this guy?
- 25:40Speaker 2: Yeah, he's looked great, and it's it's not even from
- 25:43Speaker 2: just like one side of the plate, it's both sides
- 25:44Speaker 2: of the play. Right now, he's just seen it really well.
- 25:46Speaker 2: I just I love the way he lets the ball travel.
- 25:49Speaker 2: As a hitter, he's willing to take his hits the
- 25:50Speaker 2: other way. And even last night he caught up to
- 25:52Speaker 2: ninety eight up and in and pulled it down the
- 25:54Speaker 2: line for double and scored a run there. It's just
- 25:57Speaker 2: he's really impressive to watch when he's when he's at
- 26:00Speaker 2: his best. And I think last year those injuries really
- 26:03Speaker 2: play factored into his season. I think it really affected
- 26:06Speaker 2: way more than he wanted to admit. And this is
- 26:08Speaker 2: the kind of hitter and player Oriols fans expected. When
- 26:11Speaker 2: you're drafting number one overall, you have a lofty expectations,
- 26:14Speaker 2: and I think right now he's living up to those
- 26:16Speaker 2: and more.
- 26:17Speaker 3: He's looked great at the plate.
- 26:19Speaker 2: Behind the plate, the way he's helping these young pitchers
- 26:22Speaker 2: kind of settle into it's been really impressive and fun
- 26:24Speaker 2: to watch.
- 26:27Speaker 4: He's played in twenty two games so far, and you
- 26:29Speaker 4: can go back to each year of his career. This season,
- 26:33Speaker 4: the first twenty two games. Compared to that sample size,
- 26:36Speaker 4: he's got the most doubles, RBIs, total bases and fewish strikeouts.
- 26:41Speaker 4: And we know how good Adley was when he first
- 26:44Speaker 4: came up, and he was a two time All Star
- 26:46Speaker 4: in twenty three, in twenty four, and Adley has better
- 26:49Speaker 4: numbers through the first twenty two games than those seasons.
- 26:54Speaker 4: He has been really, really impressive. And Brad wanted to
- 26:58Speaker 4: get your thoughts on the other day. Steve and I
- 27:00Speaker 4: talked about it yesterday on pregame. Just Craig Alberna is
- 27:04Speaker 4: pushing the right button pinch hitting Samuel Bisio and Tuesday
- 27:08Speaker 4: night's game, and look, that would have been a decision
- 27:10Speaker 4: that was second guest if Adley didn't come through, but
- 27:13Speaker 4: he did. Samuel Basil, he was only one homeer away
- 27:16Speaker 4: from the cycle that night, but Adley came through in
- 27:19Speaker 4: a big time spot.
- 27:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it goes to show the confidence he
- 27:22Speaker 2: has in both guys. I think it's you know, they're
- 27:25Speaker 2: interchangeable at any point, whether it's a pinch hit, whether
- 27:28Speaker 2: it's putting them both in the lineup together. One is
- 27:30Speaker 2: the DH, one is the catcher, And I think it
- 27:32Speaker 2: just shows, like you're saying, I mean that that is
- 27:34Speaker 2: like an unheard of both the guy has a triple
- 27:36Speaker 2: double single to that point, and you pinch hit somebody
- 27:39Speaker 2: who hasn't been in the game all all game, and
- 27:42Speaker 2: it just it allows the versatility because of the switch
- 27:45Speaker 2: hitting of Ali Rushman, and it's it's just been it's
- 27:48Speaker 2: been really cool to watch, and it's been great to
- 27:50Speaker 2: see how they're handling all of it, whether you know,
- 27:53Speaker 2: I think when we talked we kind of the other day,
- 27:55Speaker 2: I mentioned how you just got to get both these
- 27:57Speaker 2: guys in the lineup.
- 27:58Speaker 3: But we'll see how plays out as A and goes along.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Maybe OUTA would be more fresh, and maybe the fact
- 28:02Speaker 2: that they're both not in the line of every single
- 28:04Speaker 2: day will make them better come August in September. So
- 28:07Speaker 2: it's it's been fun to watch and what a luxury
- 28:10Speaker 2: to have both these guys. And I think with Visaio's
- 28:13Speaker 2: coming around behind the plate and the way he's he's
- 28:17Speaker 2: done a great job catching really just freeze up Alberne
- 28:20Speaker 2: is when it comes to being able to play both
- 28:22Speaker 2: these guys or one of them and give them the
- 28:24Speaker 2: rest that they need. But it's been it's been fun
- 28:26Speaker 2: to watch and it's it's cool to see how he's
- 28:28Speaker 2: been using them. It's an interesting dynamic. And I don't
- 28:30Speaker 2: think any team in the league has what the Orioles
- 28:33Speaker 2: have in both these catchers.
- 28:35Speaker 1: All Star candidates, two catchers. And we're a long way
- 28:39Speaker 1: away from really getting deeper into that conversation, but right now,
- 28:42Speaker 1: and guys, the offense right now, you've got Adlie going,
- 28:45Speaker 1: You've got Ward going, You've got Alonso going, you got
- 28:48Speaker 1: Besaio going. You don't have Gunner going. It's hard to
- 28:51Speaker 1: maybe get all five at one time. But they're only
- 28:53Speaker 1: one short right now to really seeing what this thing
- 28:56Speaker 1: can look like. And I think the offense that a
- 28:58Speaker 1: lot of people expected is starting to come yeah.
- 29:03Speaker 2: And I think if the offense gets going like we
- 29:06Speaker 2: think it can, it can kind of iron over some
- 29:09Speaker 2: of these pitching, you know, problems that may be seen
- 29:12Speaker 2: right now, and I think it just frees them up
- 29:15Speaker 2: to not feel they have to be perfect the whole
- 29:17Speaker 2: time and just go out there and do what they do.
- 29:19Speaker 2: And I think last night with Brandon Young getting those
- 29:21Speaker 2: three runs early, Yes, he gave up the three right away,
- 29:23Speaker 2: but he was able to go back out there and
- 29:25Speaker 2: they kept tacking on runs, and I think if Pitchers
- 29:27Speaker 2: starts seeing that, it's kind of like, Okay, it's time
- 29:30Speaker 2: for us to kind of get things in gear here
- 29:32Speaker 2: and not have to stress so much about putting up
- 29:35Speaker 2: zeros every single inning when you have an offense that
- 29:37Speaker 2: can score at the rate that I think we expect
- 29:39Speaker 2: them to put up runs.
- 29:41Speaker 4: The reality is if the Orioles get back to playing
- 29:44Speaker 4: games in October, it's got to be on the back
- 29:47Speaker 4: of the offense. That's just how the team was built.
- 29:50Speaker 1: Pete was the huge acquisition.
- 29:52Speaker 4: Taylor War was a big time trade, and we know
- 29:55Speaker 4: all of these guys in this young corps they're going
- 29:58Speaker 4: to have to hit in order to make the playoffs.
- 30:03Speaker 1: So it's gotten a little better in Birdland, slowly but surely,
- 30:06Speaker 1: and the Oriols are digging out of a hole here
- 30:08Speaker 1: a couple wins in Miami. There now seventeen and twenty
- 30:12Speaker 1: and at one two in a row after the five
- 30:14Speaker 1: game losing streak homestand begins Friday against the Athletics in Boltimore.
- 30:18Speaker 1: They'll try for the sweep tonight at Lone Depot Park
- 30:23Speaker 1: for Brad Rock and Tim Barblay. So I'm Steve Maleski,
- 30:25Speaker 1: thanks for joining us. We'll see in a couple of
- 30:27Speaker 1: days with another edition of A Birdland Territory
