- 0:05[SPEAKER_00]: And welcome to the M&QD NFL podcast, how we've reached here onward.
- 0:10[SPEAKER_00]: That's me.
- 0:11[SPEAKER_00]: Peace here too.
- 0:12[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm sitting here on Monday morning, it's about 9 a.m.
- 0:19[SPEAKER_00]: and we're putting together the show and it's just reported that.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_00]: Adam Shepter reports that Joe Burrow is going to get the surgery on the turf toe.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to be out for three months and I've seen this discourse kind of popping up online and I have to say I wholeheartedly agree that
- 0:36[SPEAKER_00]: like we have to stop calling it turf toe.
- 0:38[SPEAKER_00]: Like there has to be a name for it that's like, this hurts more than you can possibly humanly imagine.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_00]: And imagine like your big toe getting half ripped off.
- 0:51[SPEAKER_00]: You know what it's like, the high ankle sprain.
- 0:54[SPEAKER_02]: It's just like, it goes sprain.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_02]: When people think that that's like a guy turning his ankle, like you might turn your ankle if you don't see a curb, you know what I mean?
- 1:02[SPEAKER_02]: It's essentially like a boom.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_00]: broken lower leg, yeah.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_02]: It's like significant ligament damage here to like everything below your knee, you know, so we're all just like, why isn't he going to be out there in three weeks?
- 1:15[SPEAKER_00]: Right, fantasy team needs help.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_02]: Then you have the different grades of them too, which makes it even worse, right?
- 1:21[SPEAKER_02]: Like, which is like, well, how come he had turf toe and he was only out for three weeks and this guy's out for three months, you know, so I'm with you on that,
- 1:33[SPEAKER_02]: I mean we go with a list of them.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sure there are other ones we're not thinking of.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, like Liz Frank, it just sounds like it sounds like you're your single aunt, you know, that's just like that comes to parties.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, that's my aunt.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_00]: That's a bad thing too.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_00]: And that is like incredibly.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_00]: I would argue, like, in Flenter Fashi, I just sounds bad, right?
- 1:53[SPEAKER_00]: Like, don't you think?
- 1:54[SPEAKER_00]: Flenter Fashi, I just sounds like medically.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_00]: Sounds bad.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_00]: Sounds like you look a bacteria.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_02]: There's got to be like, there's got to be like something with your arm too.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_02]: It sounds like you hit your funny bone, but it's actually like broken in three different places.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, he just, he left the game with a, with a stinger and it's like, yeah, my whole body wed, obviously, it's actually a state of temporary paralysis, but sure.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, let's just call it a silly stinger.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_00]: But so this obscures the fact that like,
- 2:24[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so Cincinnati beats the Jacksonville Jaguars 31 to 27 and we're going to start with that game in our weekend recap because it's of the most Consequence Jake Browning comes in and goes 21 to 32 for 241 two touchdowns, but also three picks which was kind of Unlike him when he the last time he came down for spot duty.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_00]: He was incredibly accurate.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_00]: He was a low turnover guy But you know
- 2:50[SPEAKER_00]: Can he hold serve now for three months in order to get Joe, Joe Burrell back on the field in December with the chance to get the Bengals back into the playoffs?
- 3:01[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_00]: That's a mighty, mighty big ask Albert.
- 3:04[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 3:04[SPEAKER_02]: So like let's just say you target December 14th.
- 3:07[SPEAKER_02]: That's week 15 against the Ravens.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_02]: It's it burns your turn.
- 3:11[SPEAKER_02]: You already have two wins in the bank.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so you're
- 3:16[SPEAKER_02]: And we 15, I think we're talking about that's 11 games, right?
- 3:20[SPEAKER_02]: Cut.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_02]: Um, or no, would it be, you know, be 11 games because you're the buying there.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_02]: So, can you go, let's say five and six, which would put you at seven and six and we 15?
- 3:33[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_02]: Can you go five and six at Vikings?
- 3:37[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_02]: You can win that game.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_02]: Sure.
- 3:39[SPEAKER_02]: At Broncos.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_02]: Sure.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I'm not saying that they can't, but yeah, I'm saying it's hard.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_02]: Well, if you're, yeah, so we won't count that one.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_02]: Apacres, week six, tough, right?
- 3:56[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I don't know.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_02]: Steelers in week seven.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, okay.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_02]: Jets in week eight.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, sure.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, four, right.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, four, right after week two, we're like, yep.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, fairs in week nine.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_02]: Now you're at five, so you're there now, right?
- 4:13[SPEAKER_02]: And only a week, no.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_02]: Dang.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_02]: I and weekend at Steelers and Week 11.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_02]: Let's just not give that to them, because we, let's just say they split with the Steelers, okay?
- 4:22[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, Patriots, week 12.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_02]: Sure.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_02]: Six.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_02]: At Ravens and Week 13, that's tough.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not gonna give that to them.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_02]: At Bills and Week 14.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_02]: So if we don't give them those two, now we're at six and five over that 11 game stretch.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_02]: And there are eight and five.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_02]: So I think if you're the Bengals, and that's a very optimistic.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, let's just say we're being very optimistic.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_02]: There's gonna be some games.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_02]: And I think one thing people discount sometimes, is just because you look good with a backup quarterback over a couple weeks, isn't the same thing as being able to pull it off over three months?
- 4:59[SPEAKER_02]: Cause they're gonna get tape on what you're doing.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_02]: It's gonna be a little bit harder to game it up.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, do it with smoke and mirrors over a longer period of time.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, man, like, I think they could kind of make it, you know, and I think three months is from everything I understand kind of optimistic, but, you know, September 15th right now, three months is December 14th, that Ravens game he's coming back.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_02]: If they're
- 5:34[SPEAKER_02]: I, you know what I mean?
- 5:35[SPEAKER_02]: Like I think they, like, and then you look at the end of their schedule, and they do with the Ravens on week 15, but then after that, Connor, at Dolphins, Cardinals, Browns.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_02]: Help is on the way.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think it's over for Sanders at the end of the season.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think it's over, do you?
- 5:55[SPEAKER_02]: No, and I said that I've been there before it does help.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_02]: Like you don't wish to disappoint anybody.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_02]: Joe Burrow is a great dude on top of being a great player.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_02]: And I, you know, I feel awful for him, cause I know how important this is to him.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_02]: You've been around him too, like this chair.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I've seen some people say Andrew Locke with him, and I think it's fair to bring up that name based on how much he's been banged up and how frustrating it's got to be for him, but I don't think Joe would be the one who would walk away ever.
- 6:25[SPEAKER_02]: I think Joe would ask for a trade if he became very frustrated before he would walk away.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_02]: But I mean, look just like looking at like the schedule,
- 6:36[SPEAKER_02]: Could he put himself in a position?
- 6:38[SPEAKER_02]: Could the Bengals manage this?
- 6:39[SPEAKER_02]: Because Zach Taylor and Dan pitcher managed this.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_02]: Could Al Goldnug and of joke, because the defense has shown some good signs.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_02]: Could all this kind of coalesce where you could be a 500 team for the next three months.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_02]: And then, you know, you got a chance based on a schedule to really kind of hit the ground running as Joe comes back and then be a dangerous team in the playoffs.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_02]: It's not possible.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_00]: This you know who really and I'm not going to say benefit it because that's not the right word, but you know what team kind of skates buy
- 7:13[SPEAKER_00]: due to the gravity of this news is a Jaguar's team that blew this game and had too very loud and kind of noteworthy things taking place in this one.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_00]: Now I'm not an alarmist.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_00]: The time I was saying, well, there's the Trevor thing for those of you guys who didn't see that Liam Cohen's on the sideline banging his chest with his hand saying you have to hit him here with the pass.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_00]: And then Trevor Lawrence just waves them off like, all right, whatever man and goes back to the game.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_00]: And then there was also Brian Thomas running around over the middle.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_00]: And he just stops dead in his tracks and because he's about to get hit and I don't blame him.
- 7:52[SPEAKER_00]: I would do the same thing, but I'm also not an NFL wide receiver.
- 7:56[SPEAKER_00]: And so just let's the ball skid by and after the game, Liam Cohen's like trying to bite his tongue.
- 8:01[SPEAKER_00]: a little bit and trying not to say that, you know, he should probably, you know, run into the fire here and catch the ball.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm not saying that these are bubbling things.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not, I'm just saying that you beat the Panthers in week one and then you lose to Jake Browning in week two and like the Travis Hunter thing, like he got a kind of a pretty costly DPI in this game
- 8:28[SPEAKER_00]: And I think we knew that it was going to be a lot, and now it's a lot for a guy who is again, first time head coach, first time offensive coordinator, first time defensive coordinator, all this first time GM, like it's getting dark a little early right now for Jackson.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_02]: Well, and that was because that was why I was at Wolf time my breakfast.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_02]: That was why that was why
- 8:53[SPEAKER_02]: I think like looking at it was easy to get over your skis and then wake one and like I think I love I love Travis Hunter as a player, but this is where I saw my questions with trading for him came in is like that felt like the move of a team that feels like they're close and a team that feels like okay like we're giving up a high first round picking this
- 9:19[SPEAKER_02]: The first round pick we're going to give up next year isn't going to be very high and you know, I think that's where some of the questions with the hunter move come is, you know, were they in a position to be that team that was that that that that that that that can put it over the top that quickly.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not sure that they are.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_00]: Do you think at all?
- 9:40[SPEAKER_00]: I mean,
- 9:48[SPEAKER_00]: Any, like, do you look at Kirk Cousins?
- 9:52[SPEAKER_00]: Is this even a question in your mind?
- 9:54[SPEAKER_00]: Through the angles?
- 9:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 10:00[SPEAKER_02]: I, I, I might, yeah, I might.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, look like, here's the way I look at it, right?
- 10:06[SPEAKER_02]: Joe's what, Joe's gonna be 30 next year.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_02]: Um, you see, really?
- 10:10[SPEAKER_02]: Thank God, I think I got to go with that up.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_02]: But, um,
- 10:15[SPEAKER_02]: maybe I'm off on 29.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_00]: He'll be 29 next Christmas.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 10:20[SPEAKER_02]: No, he'll be 30 next Christmas.
- 10:21[SPEAKER_02]: He's going to be 29 this Christmas.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, 29.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_02]: Get right.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_02]: You're right.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_02]: So I'll be 30 next Christmas.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_02]: So like I, I remember like I'm like being around New England during the Brady years.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_02]: One
- 10:37[SPEAKER_02]: Every year that you have to have when you have a quarterback like that is precious and you should treat it as such, right?
- 10:45[SPEAKER_02]: So every year that you have a chance to take a quarterback like that into the playoffs has high, high value.
- 10:54[SPEAKER_02]: So it's on you to maximize every chance that you have to take a quarterback like that into the playoffs.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_02]: And in a case like this,
- 11:03[SPEAKER_02]: I would say that that applies in that there's great value in giving Joe Burrow a chance to get to the playoffs when he gets back.
- 11:12[SPEAKER_02]: And so if you feel like Kirk Cousins gives you a significantly better chance to do that, then Jake Browning does, but I think you owe it to yourself to do that.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_02]: Now, here's the thing.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_02]: It's going to take a significant financial investment to do it.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_00]: And are the falcons have been holding waiting for a moment like this right and waiting for a moment like right and I
- 11:36[SPEAKER_02]: I think on the surface, it makes all the sense of the world look.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_02]: Zack Taylor, a lot of his background, of course, was with Sean McPhay as an assistant.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_02]: Sean McPhay was one of Kirk Cousins's earliest coaches.
- 11:48[SPEAKER_02]: So at least on paper, there's some crossover there in what the Bengals do.
- 11:53[SPEAKER_02]: And it's a place that Kirk Cousins could come in and hit the ground running.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_02]: Kirk Cousins would have to... would have to...
- 12:01[SPEAKER_02]: Wave is no trade clause, which I've been told that once you got the camp, he wasn't gonna do that for just anybody.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_02]: But I can't imagine if your current cousin as you wouldn't look at the situation and wanna run to it, you know?
- 12:13[SPEAKER_02]: Hell yeah.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I think like,
- 12:17[SPEAKER_02]: despite some of the issues in the offensive line, I saw the Bengals getting killed for their investment on the offensive line.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think the investment on the offensive line has been that much of a problem.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, they have a big money left to tackle.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_02]: They have a first-round pick playing, you know, playing right to tackle.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_02]: They've got, you know, a center that they've paid, I think, two or three times now.
- 12:36[SPEAKER_02]: So like I don't think it's investment.
- 12:37[SPEAKER_02]: You can say that they messed up and invested in the wrong people But I don't think you can say they haven't made an investment in that area.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_02]: I think they have you know Yeah, that wouldn't weird the reaction to that it's not the cults like the cults like with Andrew like you could there's a serious case for like they have not invested anywhere near enough
- 12:54[SPEAKER_02]: and protecting Andrew Locker.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think that's the case with the bangles.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the bangles are trying.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I mean, they, they top the league and free agency spend, I think two or three times since Zack Taylor's been there.
- 13:06[SPEAKER_00]: You make everything work with tray Hendricks in and, and T-Hagans, and, you know, like, you're doing everything you can to keep this team together and you're just kind of cycling your investment over and over and over in that offensive line.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, some, at some point, like what
- 13:23[SPEAKER_02]: Do you want them to do for you to find out that by just to put you to put a bow on the cousins thing this would be a significant short term investment looking for a short term gain and are you willing to do that because you got the ten million dollars is guaranteed for next year could you work something out with him where maybe
- 13:44[SPEAKER_02]: like you do something with the guarantees for next year.
- 13:47[SPEAKER_02]: So like you won't be on the hook for those if he really wants the opportunity to come and play.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_02]: These would be an interesting situation for Kirk because there's also no guarantee that Joe's going to be back as quickly as we're saying he's going to be back, right?
- 14:01[SPEAKER_02]: Like if there's any sort of step back or anything else like maybe Kirk's
- 14:09[SPEAKER_02]: Um, I just think like, I think it's something, it's something you got to think about, although I think having Jake Browning gives you a, a real chance to, you know, like I think, I think, I think Jake Browning sort of in this category where,
- 14:32[SPEAKER_00]: Um, our pelgimi trainer has a good point as always and everyone should follow Jimmy and listen to his podcast week for the Bengals are on Monday night football week five America's game against the Lions week six the the Romo Nans game against the Packers week seven Thursday night football on Amazon so we're going to go on a jake browning get a lot of jake browning get to know him fellas.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, maybe that's uh,
- 14:59[SPEAKER_00]: part of the other reason you you go out and you at least take a look just call the falcons just see what they say yeah uh the worst the worst you can say is no uh that's that's I mean it becomes if they if they were to trade for cartoons it would be coming off like a compelling story you know
- 15:18[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, if you're the Falcons like you get, you can roll over the cap savings to next year, right, and then whatever you get in a pick you get in a pick, I don't even think that will be the idea, you know, but yeah, I mean, I, I think the Bengals should look at it.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_00]: Alright, let's go over to before we get to my favorite game of the week and I think everyone knows what that is.
- 15:42[SPEAKER_00]: Let's talk about Eagles and let's talk about Eagles and Chiefs.
- 15:46[SPEAKER_00]: This is a Super Bowl rematch in theory.
- 15:48[SPEAKER_00]: But
- 15:50[SPEAKER_00]: And it was 20 to 17, but it wasn't really.
- 15:54[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 15:54[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, this was a game that I think really highlighted how anemic the chiefs have become Patrick Mahomes led the team in rushing for a second straight week.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_00]: He has a QBR under 80.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_00]: This is just not what you want.
- 16:10[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you don't want Travis Kelsey leading your team in targets, and you don't want your second best option being Tyquan Thornton, and Like another none of it looks right and here's my kind of point central point in all this
- 16:26[SPEAKER_00]: There's a conversation that has to be had about Travis Kelsey, but I think it involves a lot of new ones.
- 16:32[SPEAKER_00]: What I don't think the conversation is is, look, he married a famous person and doesn't care anymore.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_00]: Untrue, right?
- 16:40[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that that's kind of... Can't play in the NFL at that age if you don't care anymore.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_00]: So here's what I think.
- 16:47[SPEAKER_00]: is going on and here's my take on it.
- 16:50[SPEAKER_00]: I think that the chiefs wanted to have Travis age as a player, who almost in the secondary is like, is like Kevin Love, like he's setting picks for other people.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_00]: He's opening up the lanes for other people.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_00]: And then on third down, sometimes he's there as Patrick Mahomes is security blanket.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_00]: That's kind of what you wanted, but in week one,
- 17:10[SPEAKER_00]: when he's running one of these complimentary routes, he knocks out one of his other wide receivers, right?
- 17:16[SPEAKER_00]: And that was a great jam by Durwin James that pushes him into Xavier worthy and makes life a mess for the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 17:24[SPEAKER_00]: And then we, too,
- 17:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's okay, now we need you to kind of be our lead wide receiver because everybody else is hurt right and he's exhausted you're exhausted from week one your beat up from week one.
- 17:37[SPEAKER_00]: You're not feeling good about yourself and we had to go back from free can Brazil right and then in week two okay you get your head around a little late on that ball from Patrick Mahomes you bought the ball up in the air and it happens to be picked by another fabulous Eagles defender.
- 17:56[SPEAKER_00]: that they drafted.
- 17:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_00]: And so I think that that's the long and short of the conversation.
- 18:03[SPEAKER_00]: Guys, he's 36 years old.
- 18:05[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_00]: He's not going to be
- 18:09[SPEAKER_00]: you're a great Titan who's going to handle it.
- 18:13[SPEAKER_00]: Like it's not going to be like Tyler Warren is right.
- 18:15[SPEAKER_02]: That's not.
- 18:16[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it's remarkable too.
- 18:17[SPEAKER_02]: Like that he's made it as long as he has.
- 18:19[SPEAKER_02]: Because if you look at history of that position, that is a tough position to stay healthy because the demands on it are crazy, right?
- 18:26[SPEAKER_02]: The demands like to be
- 18:28[SPEAKER_02]: to block as well as alignment and catch as well as a receiver, I mean, and by the way, like when you're running those routes, you're running them right in the teeth of the defense, where the biggest most physical people are, you know, the biggest fast, the biggest fastest, most physical people are, your linebackers, your
- 18:45[SPEAKER_02]: your corners, your d-line, and in some cases, you've got to fight through them.
- 18:50[SPEAKER_02]: It's why Rob Grundkowski retired at what?
- 18:53[SPEAKER_02]: 30, right?
- 18:55[SPEAKER_02]: It's why, like you have guys who are great players, objectively great players, that couldn't stay healthy later in their careers.
- 19:02[SPEAKER_02]: And it's why guys, like, again, like, guys like Kelsey and Toni Gonzalez are the real outliers.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_02]: You know, the ones that actually make it,
- 19:12[SPEAKER_02]: deep into their 30s.
- 19:13[SPEAKER_02]: It does not happen at that position.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_02]: So I think people look at this the wrong way.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_02]: It's remarkable that he's still going at the level that he's going at at his age, you know, and we should be celebrating that.
- 19:26[SPEAKER_02]: You know, it's on the, I mean, the chief has done such a great job building that team up and giving Patrick Mahalms a chance to compete for a championship every time, every year he's he's been the starter, but like, you know, like this is
- 19:41[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I think in some ways, this is the price for, you know, Xavier Worthy not being healthy.
- 19:46[SPEAKER_02]: It's the price for, you know, after you trade, Tyrie killed you, doing enough to come up with another focal point for the offense.
- 19:55[SPEAKER_02]: You know, like I, again, like they've done a really nice job making it work over the last couple of years.
- 20:02[SPEAKER_02]: But they can't ask him to be the focal point of the office, and unfortunately there's nobody else.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_02]: that they have out there that draws covers right now the way that he used to be able to.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 20:12[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that that's it at the end of the day.
- 20:14[SPEAKER_00]: And I think it's one of those like we have to we have to allow this stuff to happen naturally without injecting our own thoughts into this.
- 20:24[SPEAKER_00]: You know, like, and yes, he's getting married to a very famous person, which he seems to love and care about.
- 20:30[SPEAKER_00]: And that's great.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_02]: She's not going to do with any of that.
- 20:33[SPEAKER_00]: It has nothing to do with anything.
- 20:34[SPEAKER_02]: uh... he actually like everybody i think in week one was saying how much sprire how much quicker he looked uh... how much more fleet of foody looks here uh... i'm still interested to see what this looks like when they get rice back and when they get when they get worthy back because i think it looks significantly different
- 20:53[SPEAKER_00]: I think for sure a lot of people need to be on the lookout for getting cold takes exposed on this chief thing like yes they're only two for the first time since 2014 but I'm I'm not there yet.
- 21:06[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not there yet.
- 21:07[SPEAKER_02]: I was like I'm I'm I'm I see like I think you hit on like them to me the most.
- 21:13[SPEAKER_02]: the the most glaring thing is how much my home is running the ball because I don't think he wants to keep you can't do it.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_00]: Like he does it.
- 21:21[SPEAKER_02]: And to me like my home is only doing that and what only do that when he needs to.
- 21:27[SPEAKER_02]: When he absolutely needs to and his team needs it and so now you're seeing it but that's never the plan for that.
- 21:34[SPEAKER_02]: That's not the plan for any read.
- 21:35[SPEAKER_02]: It's not the plan for Patrick Mahomes.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_02]: It's not the plan for any of that.
- 21:39[SPEAKER_02]: So to me that's the real sign that like the
- 21:42[SPEAKER_02]: that they just don't have enough answers right now.
- 21:45[SPEAKER_02]: And again, those answers could come.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_02]: Xavier wore these short of ton of promise.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_02]: You might be a little worried based on his size and now some of the history.
- 21:54[SPEAKER_02]: His first couple years in the league is he a little, like, are you gonna be a little count on him on a week to week basis from a health standpoint, right?
- 22:03[SPEAKER_02]: But, I mean, if you can get him in Hollywood Brown,
- 22:07[SPEAKER_02]: healthy together, and then you have Rashi Rice as part of that mix.
- 22:11[SPEAKER_02]: I think it looks significantly different.
- 22:12[SPEAKER_02]: It does right now.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_00]: I do too.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_00]: I think everything's going to be fine.
- 22:17[SPEAKER_00]: And I think people who are saying that Patrick Mahomes is lost through that he's overthrown Tyquan Thornton maybe it's because he doesn't have to throw the ball to Tyquan Thornton.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_00]: Hold on guys.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_00]: That's just stupid.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, do you see that ball?
- 22:28[SPEAKER_02]: That ball that would have been touched down the Tyquan Thornton.
- 22:30[SPEAKER_02]: Which would have changed the dynamic of the game.
- 22:33[SPEAKER_02]: I thought Thornton slowed down on that route and that was why, and now I mean, my home should never say it, but I think watching, watching that, he could maybe he could have put a little more air under it, but it looked like Thornton like slowed down and misjudged it a little bit, you know what I mean?
- 22:47[SPEAKER_02]: Which is what happens when you've got a, when, you know, you're lying on a guy who is sort of discarded by another team that's been in the second round pick on him, you know?
- 22:59[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, like, that's where they are, but that's where they're at where they are.
- 23:03[SPEAKER_02]: So I'd have about the Eagles.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, see, this is the other part that drives me nuts.
- 23:10[SPEAKER_02]: I haven't taken on this and I wrote it.
- 23:12[SPEAKER_02]: I wrote it.
- 23:15[SPEAKER_02]: I think this is about the Eagles offensive line on a day.
- 23:18[SPEAKER_02]: They threw for 101 yards and average 3.6 yards per carry.
- 23:23[SPEAKER_02]: And here's why, okay?
- 23:25[SPEAKER_02]: That offensive line influenced the last eight minutes of that game in an incredible way.
- 23:31[SPEAKER_02]: because they were able to churn out the first down, right?
- 23:34[SPEAKER_02]: And what's the sign of toughness in the NFL corner?
- 23:37[SPEAKER_02]: Well, coaches will always tell you, is the number one sign of a tough team in the NFL is running the ball when they know you're going to run it, right?
- 23:43[SPEAKER_02]: Yep.
- 23:44[SPEAKER_02]: And so they churn out that first down, the two, the two Barclay runs, and then the touch push, and then they punt with... So that takes like three minutes off the clock.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_02]: The chiefs, I firmly believe, did not kick the ball away that are because of the Eagles offensive line.
- 24:08[SPEAKER_02]: I firmly believe that.
- 24:09[SPEAKER_02]: That is why they didn't kick it away.
- 24:12[SPEAKER_02]: Because they knew that the probability that the Eagles were going to be able to rot line up and churn out another first down was too high.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_02]: So we probably aren't going to get the ball back.
- 24:21[SPEAKER_02]: And then that fear was justified when the Eagles weren't in did it.
- 24:24[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 24:24[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 24:24[SPEAKER_02]: So they tried the on-site kick, the Eagles recover, then the Eagles turn at first down, achieves never get the ball back.
- 24:30[SPEAKER_02]: And I just think like that's like one of those subtle things where the strength of a team influenced the way the end of that game was played.
- 24:38[SPEAKER_02]: You know, it shortened the end of that game essentially.
- 24:43[SPEAKER_02]: And I was just thinking about this last night.
- 24:45[SPEAKER_02]: That's so incredible that they essentially over the last
- 24:52[SPEAKER_02]: And it's still this way.
- 24:55[SPEAKER_02]: You know what I mean?
- 24:56[SPEAKER_00]: It's still this way.
- 24:57[SPEAKER_00]: And I love, this is the same thing that we kind of go through.
- 25:01[SPEAKER_02]: And that's by the way, that's a defensive line.
- 25:04[SPEAKER_02]: That's a team doing it.
- 25:06[SPEAKER_02]: The team is like kind of like a little fearful and the team that is making a decision to go with the onsite kick there because of that the other teams offensive line has Chris Jones and George Harloftis on a defensive front.
- 25:23[SPEAKER_00]: I love the the outrage over camp to low their first year offence of coordinator to where if you go back and you watch that can already Yeah, and it's like do you realize that
- 25:41[SPEAKER_00]: This offense is putting chess pieces on a chessboard right now because they know that they're going to be in this for the long haul, they know that they're going to be in this in the playoffs deep into the playoffs and potentially into the Super Bowl.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_00]: They're working through things in a way that sets them up so much better and week one against the Cowboys It was let's get Jahan dots in the ball because Jahan dots It was just a complimentary route runner last year He was there to get Devontas Smith and all these other guys open But what if you had a legitimate vertical threat in that offense right and Tom Brady was kind of oddly critical You say why I've only seen AJ Brown run one route all day
- 26:24[SPEAKER_00]: But there's a purpose behind this.
- 26:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's not like this.
- 26:28[SPEAKER_00]: This staff is like, oh, yeah, we're just, you know, flying blind and hand in the ball to say, one, Barkley, all I would say is give it time.
- 26:35[SPEAKER_00]: Watch what happens.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's going to get better as the season goes along.
- 26:39[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's going to look better, but also like you winning games and who gives a shit like the bills beat the jet yesterday without a single Josh Allen touchdown.
- 26:48[SPEAKER_00]: It's only a second time that's happened since Josh Allen became the starting quarterback where they want a game without him scoring a single touchdown.
- 26:57[SPEAKER_00]: And my question to you is, what, what, who cares, right?
- 27:00[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like you won the game.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_00]: We don't need to invest in style points.
- 27:07[SPEAKER_00]: All right, we want an arrowhead by the way.
- 27:09[SPEAKER_00]: But an arrowhead.
- 27:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 27:12[SPEAKER_00]: I got.
- 27:14[SPEAKER_00]: Let's get to the real reason we all wake up in the morning Albert and that's to watch Russell Wilson throw for 450 yards and three touchdowns the giants Cowboys game was awesome and
- 27:25[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, a lot of people were sending me my column from three or four years ago, where I said that the game should be banned from, uh, from prime time, uh, and I appreciate people digging that up and, and sending it back to me, but I would argue that I was totally correct in saying that.
- 27:43[SPEAKER_00]: And now that the Cowboys and Giants are both out of prime time, we get this really nice, like, uh, want to call like,
- 27:50[SPEAKER_00]: you tap Akron energy from the game where it's just no one gives a flying f, there's moonballs everywhere, Maddie perfluce reprising his role from a year ago where we know that they're only play as a deep shot into the end zone and he decides not to cover it anyway, who do he would try that again?
- 28:11[SPEAKER_00]: The whole this game is just awesome.
- 28:13[SPEAKER_00]: I loved every second of it.
- 28:14[SPEAKER_00]: You have Brandon Aubrey with three field goals You the shotty is so confident in his kicker That he doesn't try to get him any closer than 64 to try to make a critical I talked him last night That was unbelievable.
- 28:30[SPEAKER_02]: He said to me that I'm Brandon Aubrey told me I can kill like which is far as a line of scrimmage Is like anywhere inside the 50 I'm good
- 28:40[SPEAKER_02]: So, and I'm not talking about 50R field, well, I'm saying like the line of scrimmages the 50, which is what is 67 or 68R.
- 28:47[SPEAKER_02]: And he worked for the 50N, I'm good.
- 28:50[SPEAKER_02]: So that means their field will range on half the field.
- 28:54[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I think there's a larger conversation to be had here about like, do we have to do something about the goal pose or something, you know?
- 29:03[SPEAKER_02]: Cause kickers are getting too good.
- 29:06[SPEAKER_02]: But, I mean, that's, I was with everybody else who is screaming, what are you doing?
- 29:13[SPEAKER_02]: When the hand of the ball to Giovonte Williams there and what was there at least?
- 29:19[SPEAKER_02]: There's like nine seconds left, right?
- 29:21[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 29:22[SPEAKER_02]: And sir, shot he told me, um,
- 29:25[SPEAKER_02]: He says it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it
- 29:52[SPEAKER_02]: And everybody and everybody myself includes like, what are they doing?
- 29:56[SPEAKER_02]: Like, it doesn't make any sense.
- 29:58[SPEAKER_02]: And little did we know Brandon Arbery has said, no, no, no, no, no, I'm good from there.
- 30:02[SPEAKER_02]: And that kick would have been good from 70.
- 30:04[SPEAKER_02]: I firmly believe that.
- 30:07[SPEAKER_00]: I thought that Brian Dable and this is not going to, uh, it's not going to matter, right?
- 30:15[SPEAKER_00]: But the fact that he had that team in competition after
- 30:22[SPEAKER_00]: On your first drive alone, your left tackle commits four penalties, including just not dropping into a pass set and just punching the cowboys player in the head and has to be benched.
- 30:33[SPEAKER_00]: This is already like arguably the worst left tackle in the NFL.
- 30:38[SPEAKER_00]: And so you're in this absolutely horrendous situation.
- 30:44[SPEAKER_00]: and somehow you're just throwing your way out of it and inserting Jackson Dart to do just a little like inverse of a run play a GT counter that they ran with Russell Wilson the drive before just doing anything you can to manufacture yardage against a Cowboys team that
- 31:04[SPEAKER_00]: held its own against the Eagles in week one.
- 31:06[SPEAKER_00]: So let's not call them slouches here.
- 31:08[SPEAKER_00]: It's a pretty good run defense.
- 31:10[SPEAKER_00]: And they were, I mean, they were in it step by step.
- 31:13[SPEAKER_00]: You could argue that really the only thing that disappointed was the late fourth quarter
- 31:20[SPEAKER_00]: Giants defense and the past rush when it mattered.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, but the past rush was good on third downs earlier in the game, and so I don't know I mean, it's one of these games just sucks to have a loser, but and I feel like the giants won't get that regenerative energy from it But how do you know?
- 31:36[SPEAKER_02]: Well, how do you feel about putting dart in there?
- 31:38[SPEAKER_02]: Because I thought that was weird because they were like alternating for a couple plays too and I just like I don't know.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, like kind of struck me as like
- 31:49[SPEAKER_02]: Is it is the juice worth the squeeze here, you know what I mean?
- 31:53[SPEAKER_02]: Why liked it because This because you're sort of creating like, and I'm not saying from a football standpoint, it didn't make sense, like I get that like, but are you creating something you didn't need to create there, you know what I mean?
- 32:06[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's past that.
- 32:08[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's show us that you have a plan, show show us that you have an idea or don't.
- 32:14[SPEAKER_00]: And in the fear table, right, do you really want to get to week six in your own five?
- 32:20[SPEAKER_00]: And you don't really get a chance to use him the way that you wanted anyway.
- 32:24[SPEAKER_00]: I think that there is darts entertaining as a runner.
- 32:28[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, I think that there is that aspect to his game.
- 32:32[SPEAKER_00]: And let's be real, Russ is not doing that anymore.
- 32:35[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you can just see the way that he slides when he has openings, and I'm not being critical of him, I mean, Russ and I are the same age.
- 32:43[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not running out there at this point in my life with a family and getting myself knocked around when I don't have to, but Dart is gonna get you different kinds of yards, and he's gonna unlock different parts of that run game.
- 32:56[SPEAKER_00]: And when you're offensive line is that bad Albert, I think,
- 33:00[SPEAKER_00]: you have to start sprinkling them in.
- 33:03[SPEAKER_00]: I just don't think that you have any other option.
- 33:07[SPEAKER_00]: So that's kind of my thought process there.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that, and especially sense rust through for 450 yards, you can very easily tamp down any quarterback questions by saying he legitimately had arguably the greatest game in Giants history.
- 33:22[SPEAKER_00]: to court in fact, so no, I'm not benching him this week, but we will continue to sprinkle in Jackson, though.
- 33:29[SPEAKER_00]: And it makes sense.
- 33:30[SPEAKER_02]: And that that's road to neighbors at the end was unbelievable.
- 33:35[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I, I actually, I want to see what the giants look like with Andrew Thomas in there and it's disappointing that he's not back yet, you know what I mean?
- 33:43[SPEAKER_02]: Like, because I do think some of their issues in the offensive line are going to settle down.
- 33:48[SPEAKER_02]: And I think they thought they were getting him back before this, so like, it's just going to be interesting to see how that plays out over the next couple of weeks.
- 33:55[SPEAKER_02]: And what it looks like when he is finally back in there.
- 34:03[SPEAKER_00]: that they were incredibly resilient.
- 34:05[SPEAKER_00]: Javante Williams looks young.
- 34:07[SPEAKER_00]: Again, he was breaking some tackles.
- 34:10[SPEAKER_00]: Again, this is a team that is banged up the giants in their front seven and especially guys who were, you know, outside of Dexter Lawrence built to stop the run.
- 34:19[SPEAKER_00]: That said, the fact that they were in this game against Philly, they were probably two drop balls away from winning that game.
- 34:26[SPEAKER_00]: and then had the resilience to come back and beat this Giants team in a game where Russell Wilson goes totally berserker.
- 34:33[SPEAKER_00]: You have to give Brian shot and I'm all the credit in the world.
- 34:35[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sure this is an engine.
- 34:37[SPEAKER_00]: This is a gelopy that I thought would have fallen apart a long time ago.
- 34:41[SPEAKER_00]: It sure hasn't.
- 34:41[SPEAKER_02]: Like I think.
- 34:44[SPEAKER_02]: all the things that that shot he had said were important to him, you know, the commitment to the wrong game and helping to act that way.
- 34:52[SPEAKER_02]: And the culture of the team, I think has shown up already, you know, like, and being able to gut out a win like this when you really needed after losing the opener and even the way they played that opener against the Eagles, like, I think the Cowboys at the very least shown us are going to be a really tough out week to week, you know,
- 35:13[SPEAKER_02]: The bar is usually higher in Dallas than just being a tough out, but, you know, based on what that locker room has been through over the last couple of months, and maybe some self-inflicted stuff for the organization, so to speak, you know, like, I think, you know, I think that Brian Shotnammer's quoted himself really well in his first two games
- 35:40[SPEAKER_02]: Um, you know, they'll go to Chicago next week and it'll be really interesting to see what this goes from there because this is a very manageable schedule.
- 35:51[SPEAKER_02]: Have you looked at it?
- 35:53[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 35:54[SPEAKER_02]: So actually, I have a green bay which is obviously going to have a ton of extra on it for obvious reasons than at the jets at the Panthers.
- 36:02[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, they before and two going into a game in week seven against the commanders, not a bad place to be.
- 36:11[SPEAKER_00]: Let's move on to, let's move on to the bears and lions.
- 36:15[SPEAKER_00]: And I just want to pull up this quote because it's something that I guess I never really thought about.
- 36:22[SPEAKER_00]: And I never really expected there to be that much animus for Ben Johnson returning to Detroit.
- 36:27[SPEAKER_00]: I thought this was gonna be one of those.
- 36:29[SPEAKER_00]: slap you on the back like hey we were appreciate everything you did for us kind of things but what Brian Branch said kind of stuck out to me and he said when you coming into this game that it was personal really all these games are personal but this one was just we felt like we've been you know betrayed from the staff to the players we love Ben we still love Ben he's very coach he's a mastermind
- 36:52[SPEAKER_00]: but it was time to get after them and the context of that quote that I guess I never really thought about and but clearly the lines players are thinking about is that Ben was the hottest head coach in the NFL for two straight years and he could have gone anywhere and he wanted to go to Chicago.
- 37:09[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 37:09[SPEAKER_00]: So this is like that.
- 37:11[SPEAKER_00]: This is there if you can be any going to the
- 37:15[SPEAKER_00]: which didn't work out well for Eric mentioned.
- 37:19[SPEAKER_00]: Hopefully we get like a spygate out of this, then maybe I don't know.
- 37:21[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 37:22[SPEAKER_00]: That'd be great.
- 37:24[SPEAKER_00]: But this was a beat down.
- 37:26[SPEAKER_00]: And it was a beat down because Caleb Williams made some gutting mistakes, but it was so much more than that.
- 37:33[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Deondre Swift fumbles.
- 37:35[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sorry.
- 37:36[SPEAKER_00]: I got absolutely anemic.
- 37:38[SPEAKER_00]: I got it.
- 37:38[SPEAKER_02]: I got it interrupted you.
- 37:39[SPEAKER_02]: I'm now looking on one of my TVs up here at Rex Ryan and lab goggles on on TV.
- 37:45[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm not sure what's happening over here.
- 37:48[SPEAKER_00]: Best to stay, best to stay in the podcast.
- 37:51[SPEAKER_00]: Best to stay on Josh.
- 37:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 37:55[SPEAKER_00]: When Rex Ryan's got goggles on, I think that's absolutely concerning.
- 38:00[SPEAKER_00]: the penalties horrendous run defense yeah horrendous run game after the first quarter where the Undersmith is gaining like seven yards of carry and then all of a sudden the fumble and then the wheels come off like this team in like after one good quarter and I guess that you could almost stretch it like after Benja's done scripting plays it just completely falls off of
- 38:26[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, but I think this game is also like a perfect example of how like week one over reactions happen and we lack context, right?
- 38:35[SPEAKER_02]: Like so you could look at this and like after what we saw on Thursday night, maybe the Packers defense is that good.
- 38:43[SPEAKER_02]: and then you look at who the bear's played and a really competitive game and it's like he's been a soda who we thought they were.
- 38:49[SPEAKER_02]: And so like, and I'm not saying you can draw conclusion now for a week too, but this is sort of how things evolve and come together.
- 38:56[SPEAKER_02]: And I thought it was just interesting, you know, I talked to Jimiard Gibbs after the game and he mentioned how the communication was an issue in the Packer game, right?
- 39:08[SPEAKER_02]: And if you really think about it, over the last few years they've had such continuity there as far as their chief communicators on offense, right?
- 39:16[SPEAKER_02]: It's Jared Goff, it's Frank Ragnow on the field and then it's Ben Johnson on the headset, right?
- 39:22[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 39:22[SPEAKER_02]: And so you're essentially pulling the plug on two of those and plugging somebody else in.
- 39:29[SPEAKER_02]: And you're going into Lambo in week one.
- 39:33[SPEAKER_02]: And so I just thought it was really fascinating to hear that specifically.
- 39:38[SPEAKER_02]: The communication was an issue in week one, and that they were able to kind of get their arms around it during the week.
- 39:47[SPEAKER_02]: And obviously it's going to be easier at home.
- 39:49[SPEAKER_02]: You know what I mean?
- 39:49[SPEAKER_02]: Naturally it's going to be easier at home.
- 39:51[SPEAKER_02]: But I think like what we also need to realize here, maybe this is the part of it that's personal for the players, right?
- 39:58[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, Ben Johnson is a really good offensive coach.
- 40:01[SPEAKER_02]: They have some freaking studs on that side of the ball there.
- 40:06[SPEAKER_02]: And that's even minus rag now.
- 40:09[SPEAKER_02]: And like there's a reason they pay Jamison Williams because you unique talent.
- 40:13[SPEAKER_02]: I'm on Raw St.
- 40:14[SPEAKER_02]: Brown's a warrior.
- 40:15[SPEAKER_02]: Leporda is such a, such a, like an underrated player at the Titan position.
- 40:21[SPEAKER_02]: Gibbs, we know what he is.
- 40:23[SPEAKER_02]: Montgomery, we know what he is.
- 40:24[SPEAKER_02]: Goff has been to the conference title games of two different franchises that weren't very good when he got there.
- 40:31[SPEAKER_02]: Like I just, I think like a big piece of this is
- 40:35[SPEAKER_02]: they were going through quite a bit of transition this off season and some of it, you know, like some of that led to some growing pains and maybe growing pains is the way it rate term for it.
- 40:50[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know what you call that, but like, like, just some adjustment pains, I guess, and we won that they were going to have to work out and I mean, man, they looked on stop a while yesterday.
- 41:01[SPEAKER_00]: This is a bit of whatever they wanted.
- 41:04[SPEAKER_00]: So going back to our discussion about Tanner England and did Dan Campbell make the right choice and I'm sure that Johnny Morton heard a lot of this noise, he comes back with 8.8 yards per play, which was the best single game for a coordinator in Lion's history and was also the worst game for a bear's defense since 1977.
- 41:27[SPEAKER_02]: Do you know what I'm confused by?
- 41:30[SPEAKER_02]: What's that?
- 41:31[SPEAKER_02]: Jared go off 23 of 28 334 five touchdowns nointerceptions.
- 41:35[SPEAKER_02]: How is that not a perfect quarterback rating quarterback rating is so dumb It's so dumb.
- 41:41[SPEAKER_02]: It's like the close.
- 41:42[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's 158.3 is the perfect right so he's at 156 is close But how is that not a perfect quarterback rating?
- 41:49[SPEAKER_00]: It's like the Slovakian judge in figure skating, and you're just like, how the hell did they come up with that?
- 41:55[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody else, US Brazil, everyone gives this wonderful woman in eight, and then Slovakia is like 6.5, it doesn't make any sense to me, because God and Goffs had so many of these games.
- 42:07[SPEAKER_00]: It's good to know that the lions are back.
- 42:10[SPEAKER_00]: I was, I was, I was concerned, but I have to stop overreacting and I was in Tesla with another circus.
- 42:16[SPEAKER_00]: My boy!
- 42:16[SPEAKER_02]: I was in Tesla.
- 42:19[SPEAKER_02]: I think, you know what I love to, the stat lines all makes sense.
- 42:22[SPEAKER_02]: Like you said, golf, like we've seen that stat line from him before, right?
- 42:26[SPEAKER_02]: Gibbs, 12 carries, 94 yards in the touchdown, perfect.
- 42:30[SPEAKER_02]: Aman Ross ain't brown, the volume guy, 11 targets, 9 catches, 115 yards, 3 touchdowns.
- 42:37[SPEAKER_02]: But maybe the best one is, James and Williams, two catches for 108 yards.
- 42:41[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, that's so good.
- 42:48[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, I mean, I think if I had to put the Lions players in a couch, wouldn't that be part of it, though, is that you've had to hear about what a mastermind Ben is for all these years?
- 42:58[SPEAKER_02]: And it's like, wait a minute.
- 43:00[SPEAKER_02]: Um, we have some real guys over here, you know, the part just good because of the guy coaching them.
- 43:09[SPEAKER_00]: Good for Johnny Moore.
- 43:10[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody needs to shut Connor the hell up.
- 43:12[SPEAKER_00]: And I think it might be John Morton now, by the way.
- 43:15[SPEAKER_02]: I'm a little, oh, that's something that's something we got to figure out because I, I wish I had done some fact finding on that.
- 43:23[SPEAKER_02]: Because when he was the jet's offensive coordinator,
- 43:26[SPEAKER_02]: he was Johnny.
- 43:27[SPEAKER_02]: When he was like one of four people calling plays for Jim Harba and San Francisco, he was Johnny, but I believe if you will come up now he's John.
- 43:36[SPEAKER_02]: So, oh, I don't know what happened, but something happened.
- 43:41[SPEAKER_00]: with some respect on that name, uh, going from Johnny to John is dangerous.
- 43:47[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, so we'll see what happens.
- 43:49[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, very, uh, I have very formal.
- 43:53[SPEAKER_02]: I have some friends that like, you know, you have friends from childhood where you referred to them a certain way and other names, other names different.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_02]: So,
- 44:02[SPEAKER_02]: Like, one for me is my, one of my oldest friends is, is Billy, but like, and he's, he lives in my hometown.
- 44:09[SPEAKER_02]: Everybody in my hometown is like, oh, you know Bill, it's like Bill.
- 44:16[SPEAKER_00]: I had two, but I had two, so my college roommate was Bill, and now he is, I mean, he's an ordained monk, so he's brother William, and I was like, I'm sorry, dude, I'm not, you know, you're Billy Mac, that's what I call you for the rest of your life, and, you know, I'll go to his, he's teacher, and I'll go into his class sometimes, and I'll be like, I'll Billy, Billy said this, and like a student's like, what, you know, I can't really talk, I've got the effort for things, so like, I've got that too, so,
- 44:41[SPEAKER_02]: But it's it's just interesting the way those things evolve.
- 44:44[SPEAKER_02]: I just you wouldn't expect it that late in life because Johnny Morton I believe is like 56 or 57 so it's switched to John and it was a little jarring and I don't think it's got little I don't think it's gotten quite the attention It deserves a little bit of a red flag for me for me and honest, but you know, we'll see what happens Uh, I you know
- 45:04[SPEAKER_00]: there's a couple more games that I want to get to that we're at least vaguely interesting to me and the rest of this what like we're already in week two in like we we don't have to talk about the Panthers we just don't uh they're just it's kind of what we thought they were but the Broncos and Colts Albert through two weeks are you a believer
- 45:24[SPEAKER_00]: Well, yeah, I mean, I have been the whole time.
- 45:26[SPEAKER_00]: And so I'm taking my celebratory.
- 45:28[SPEAKER_00]: That's right.
- 45:29[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you didn't know when the, are you, did I poison, did I poison your plan to pick them to win the division?
- 45:37[SPEAKER_02]: Cause I feel like wasn't that what it was?
- 45:39[SPEAKER_00]: Like you were, yeah.
- 45:40[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you were like, oh, CJ Stroud went to this school in Ohio and he's so smart and like you don't understand and now deciding whether or not to,
- 45:51[SPEAKER_00]: I think I had them both finishing 9 and 8 in my whole 272 predictions, so I feel good about feel good about where I landed and I did that last year too, but man, they are the only team in the NFL that has not punted yet.
- 46:08[SPEAKER_02]: Is that insane?
- 46:09[SPEAKER_02]: It's insane.
- 46:10[SPEAKER_00]: It's freaking punted.
- 46:11[SPEAKER_02]: And I, uh, I will say this like I'm
- 46:16[SPEAKER_02]: I've become a big quarterback recommendation project guy.
- 46:19[SPEAKER_02]: I think like these guys are oftentimes put in horrible circumstances that even great quarterbacks couldn't fight their way out of their saddle with coaches that run offences that don't fit for them or they're in dumpster fire organizations that don't put anything around them or switch out coaches every two or three years
- 46:46[SPEAKER_02]: how much proof do we need that this can work?
- 46:48[SPEAKER_02]: You know, Baker may feel Sam Darnal, Gino Smith.
- 46:51[SPEAKER_02]: If you want to go further back, you can look at the example of Alex Smith.
- 46:54[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm not saying that it's worth taking a risk on every one of these guys, but generally there's a reason why a guy is drafted in the first round at that position.
- 47:04[SPEAKER_02]: And so, you know, it's just, it's to me, you know, like, here's the most impressive thing
- 47:16[SPEAKER_02]: is all the guys around him look different.
- 47:19[SPEAKER_02]: All the guys around him look different now.
- 47:21[SPEAKER_02]: Alec Pierce looks like a different player.
- 47:23[SPEAKER_02]: Josh Downs looks like a different player.
- 47:25[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, Tyler Warren is a rookie, but I think Tyler Warren has, like adjusted the NFL quickly.
- 47:33[SPEAKER_02]: Jonathan Taylor looks alive to me as a tailback, you know?
- 47:36[SPEAKER_00]: 165 yards on Sunday.
- 47:37[SPEAKER_00]: Hell yeah.
- 47:37[SPEAKER_00]: I just think,
- 47:43[SPEAKER_02]: I think maybe we didn't fully grasp how bad it was with Anthony Richardson the last couple of years and now we're seeing what it looked like because I can remember having this discussion with Shane Steak in a couple of times this off season.
- 48:02[SPEAKER_02]: or he's like, and it was nothing against Richard Sennett, which is like, I had asked, okay, well, what does the guy who wins this job, what's he gonna need?
- 48:10[SPEAKER_02]: And it was simple, he's gonna need to be able to operate the offense.
- 48:13[SPEAKER_02]: Right, and I think that that was, now looking back at that, that was confidence that we have enough around the quarterback.
- 48:23[SPEAKER_00]: We don't need.
- 48:24[SPEAKER_00]: And we can call it, we can dial it up, like that's what we've been saying all along, like, with Anthony Richardson,
- 48:32[SPEAKER_00]: don't have time.
- 48:33[SPEAKER_00]: And we're all sitting there like, wow, he hit this guy.
- 48:36[SPEAKER_00]: Alec Pierce on a rope from 70 yards away.
- 48:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but he missed Moelle Cox four feet in front of his face.
- 48:42[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 48:43[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 48:43[SPEAKER_00]: He times before that.
- 48:44[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 48:44[SPEAKER_00]: They could have gotten you a first down.
- 48:46[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's how we got to this place.
- 48:48[SPEAKER_00]: You know?
- 48:49[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 48:49[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 48:50[SPEAKER_02]: So anyway, I think it's...
- 48:55[SPEAKER_02]: The way I look at it, the way I look at this is we have, I think, a pretty talented group on offense now that looks like it's playing at a different level.
- 49:07[SPEAKER_02]: I think we have one of the best defensive coordinators coming in on the other side of the ball.
- 49:12[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and I still have it my head that stat, which I wish I had put more stock in this.
- 49:17[SPEAKER_02]: I mentioned the T. I think over the summer, I wish I had put more stock in it, which is they were 29th of the team in the league in total offense.
- 49:25[SPEAKER_02]: or total defense last year, they were 30th and giveaways, and they still won eight games.
- 49:32[SPEAKER_02]: Like so, they were given away the ball I crazy on offense, they were playing really bad defense, and somehow I still won eight games last year.
- 49:41[SPEAKER_00]: I'm very, very happy for me.
- 49:44[SPEAKER_00]: I'm excited to watch on this team.
- 49:47[SPEAKER_00]: I'll wait to eat basis now, which is why I think I'd be here in the middle of September.
- 49:52[SPEAKER_00]: Who knew my fantasy co-manager and I were panicking about getting Kyler Murray and the sixth round would be could have literally waited until the last pick of the draft to take Daniel Jones and we would have been far better off.
- 50:04[SPEAKER_00]: Broncos at one of one, I'm, I just, I just don't know about them right now, right?
- 50:09[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know about them.
- 50:10[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I want to give them a break on this one because I think the D, I still think that D fence is really good.
- 50:16[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that this is, I don't know why that went the way that it did yesterday.
- 50:21[SPEAKER_02]: It didn't look the way that the best defense and football should look, but
- 50:27[SPEAKER_02]: I need to see more failure like that to make any sort of judgment on the Broncos defense not being the same.
- 50:34[SPEAKER_00]: I think they're going to come back and be fine.
- 50:38[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's a team that I'm just like, okay, give me one more week before I start to.
- 50:44[SPEAKER_02]: because last week the offense didn't play great but the defense was really good this week it was the other way around the offense was fine the defense wasn't so and look like they win the game if it isn't for that ridiculous leverage penalty which I couldn't I mean I that what a horrible way
- 51:04[SPEAKER_00]: You know what, so, so through two weeks.
- 51:09[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 51:10[SPEAKER_00]: Here's what I can.
- 51:11[SPEAKER_02]: We were talking about shoties decision.
- 51:12[SPEAKER_02]: How about stake in, like, lining up for a 60 yard or in the game?
- 51:17[SPEAKER_02]: Hell yeah.
- 51:18[SPEAKER_02]: Without Brandon Aubrey.
- 51:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, if you want my honest thoughts on the Broncos right now, it's that linebacker is still a major issue for them through two weeks.
- 51:30[SPEAKER_00]: We've seen them really struggle to get, you know, running back side of the back of the tight ends guys like that.
- 51:37[SPEAKER_00]: And so even and even though Vance Joseph look good in week one,
- 51:41[SPEAKER_00]: We, it was against the Titans and we can get to the Titans in a second.
- 51:45[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not quite sure what kind of a stamp that is on your season and good defense is always due to tend to regress a little bit.
- 51:53[SPEAKER_00]: So let's, let's give the Broncos another week here and then I'm going to, uh, I'm going to start to really.
- 52:01[SPEAKER_00]: Let's start to really ponder this one.
- 52:03[SPEAKER_00]: But I'm glad we raised that as a bit of concern in the off season, right?
- 52:07[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, is this team being a little bit overhyped?
- 52:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that is certainly possible.
- 52:11[SPEAKER_00]: Another one I have my eye in this weekend.
- 52:13[SPEAKER_00]: Albert was Steelers C Hawks.
- 52:15[SPEAKER_00]: C Hawks went 31 to 17.
- 52:19[SPEAKER_00]: So, right, this is the broadening of your perspective.
- 52:25[SPEAKER_00]: The Steelers looked awesome in week one, the jets who they beat looked terrible in week two to the point where they gave up 30 points to the bills in Josh Allen didn't score.
- 52:36[SPEAKER_00]: And so we're in this weird after place where I think Rogers kind of went full gunslinger
- 52:46[SPEAKER_00]: I think is that line could have been much worse than it actually was.
- 52:49[SPEAKER_00]: I think that their edge guys, especially struggled to get home and Seattle had a plan for that and really Seattle's mistakes were.
- 53:03[SPEAKER_00]: self-inflicted.
- 53:03[SPEAKER_00]: I mean a lot of them.
- 53:04[SPEAKER_00]: They're bad playcalls, right?
- 53:06[SPEAKER_00]: They were things that they, you know, things that they did to themselves.
- 53:11[SPEAKER_00]: And then to come out for Pittsburgh and just give up a cutting touchdown run to Kenneth Walker at the end of the game when when Walker was certain go back to the 19 third and goal from the 19 when Walker was so ineffective for most of that game and was kind of sideline for Charbon A like Charbon A was getting
- 53:30[SPEAKER_00]: The hot hand, even though 15 carries for 10 yards, is not necessarily the hot hand, but you know what I'm talking about.
- 53:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 53:38[SPEAKER_00]: I think that maybe they did that to the light of fire under is behind who knows, but whatever the reason I think we're now seeing the Steelers come into focus a little bit to right where this is a team that is better offensively than they were a year ago.
- 53:53[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that there's any question about what the defense is killing is slightly higher, but you're going to almost need that because that defense just isn't quite there.
- 54:04[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and I think it's the defense.
- 54:08[SPEAKER_02]: To me, I don't really, I look like they lose high smith now, so that's a problem.
- 54:14[SPEAKER_02]: They did have the rookie jacks warrior coming and get a sack.
- 54:20[SPEAKER_02]: But, you know, you look at the lot like the players are there, you know what I mean?
- 54:24[SPEAKER_02]: Like, so is this a matter of maybe certain guys just getting old or, you know?
- 54:29[SPEAKER_02]: And they are relying on a lot of guys who are up there in age, whether, you know, you're talking about obviously in Hayward and Watt, a front, but then also like, guys like Ramsay and Slay on the back end.
- 54:49[SPEAKER_02]: the Jets looked like week one versus week two.
- 54:52[SPEAKER_02]: And now the C-Hawks who didn't do a ton offensively against the Niners coming in and score 31, I mean, it's again, like it's week two, so you don't want to draw these sweeping conclusions.
- 55:05[SPEAKER_02]: But is there going to be more on Aaron Rogers to win games?
- 55:09[SPEAKER_02]: Because I think what appealed to him about the Steelers was he was going to be able to come in a jump on a moving train and there was a formula and they could win without him.
- 55:20[SPEAKER_02]: Is that defense going to be able to get itself up up off the mat or is Rogers going to have to win shoot outs on a week to week basis now because yeah it was the case and week one and if he was going to win this game and week two was going to have to be in that fashion to obviously didn't happen.
- 55:38[SPEAKER_00]: I just think like this, we are creating toward nine and eight, right, and it's crazy because talking like we did about the burl thing, there's an opportunity to steal two games from the Bengals, and I just don't think that the Steelers at this point in time are presently constructed to be good enough to beat Jake Browning twice.
- 55:57[SPEAKER_00]: I just don't think that they are.
- 55:59[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and I don't know quite what it was for me, but if you get a game like you did against the seahawks where there's that fourth and one and instead of handing the ball off, they run bootaction, Cam Hayward gets up there, bats the ball in the air, you pick it off.
- 56:14[SPEAKER_00]: like those are things that classically in Pittsburgh, that stamps the game shut, you know what I mean?
- 56:20[SPEAKER_00]: Like that's something that just puts it completely out of reach for you.
- 56:24[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you're winning at half time.
- 56:27[SPEAKER_00]: And then you get out scored 24 to three in the second half of a game.
- 56:32[SPEAKER_00]: Like it's just, and I know that Rogers was a little bit spicy after the game saying, ah, you know, it's week two, but it's not really week two.
- 56:40[SPEAKER_00]: It's week one, you beat the jets and week two.
- 56:44[SPEAKER_00]: Now you're playing one of the better teams in the NFL and you got out scored 24 to 3 in the second half.
- 56:50[SPEAKER_02]: What was that age?
- 56:54[SPEAKER_00]: He could be, right?
- 56:55[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I mean, all of your best players are in their mid to late 30s or early 40s.
- 57:01[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, I mean, I don't know.
- 57:02[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, like, like, and again, I hate to draw those conclusions.
- 57:06[SPEAKER_02]: But like, is it like a team and a Seattle team that I think's pretty physical, coming in on, I think, well, I don't know what the temperature was.
- 57:15[SPEAKER_02]: But seem like it was pretty hot everywhere yesterday.
- 57:17[SPEAKER_02]: Um, I know Kansas City was 90, right?
- 57:24[SPEAKER_02]: That's not horrible 79 degrees.
- 57:26[SPEAKER_02]: I mean I I like I do I do I do think that's something that we have to watch as the season goes on You know when you've gotten older team you're more susceptible Tangery you're more susceptible to getting worn down and you know, obviously the the C-hawks came in as a more physical team and And I think it at the very end like again like this can kind of be correlated back to that 19 yard run where I don't know
- 57:51[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if they got a hand on him on that run.
- 57:53[SPEAKER_02]: Did they?
- 57:56[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 57:57[SPEAKER_02]: Unwalker, because there was a toss play, it was like a toss to the left and hold on.
- 58:03[SPEAKER_02]: We're gonna analyze this in real time.
- 58:05[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know that they got a hand on him on that play.
- 58:09[SPEAKER_02]: We've got, all right.
- 58:11[SPEAKER_02]: So here we go.
- 58:12[SPEAKER_02]: This is how it's sausage is made folks.
- 58:15[SPEAKER_02]: We are on Twitter looking at videos.
- 58:20[SPEAKER_02]: Um, there are too many Twitter videos here.
- 58:23[SPEAKER_02]: What the heck.
- 58:24[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 58:24[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, there's too much of everything.
- 58:26[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 58:26[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, that's much available at our fingertips.
- 58:29[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 58:30[SPEAKER_00]: It's very true.
- 58:31[SPEAKER_02]: Um, I've got lots of pictures with see hox players wearing these sunglasses that I have W's on them after the game.
- 58:41[SPEAKER_02]: It's got a huge shout out of the social media people for bringing those with them.
- 58:44[SPEAKER_02]: Um, here it is.
- 58:46[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 58:46[SPEAKER_02]: So I found it.
- 58:53[SPEAKER_02]: i mean if anybody got a hand on him it was finger tips right so i'm looking at this now and yeah you got the Charles cross pulling out i mean yeah so anyway i mean like like is that a team that got worn down is that an older defense that you know you get to the back end of a game uh it doesn't look the same and how does that translate later in the year you know
- 59:20[SPEAKER_02]: I think those are questions that probably should have been asked from the beginning with an older team, you know, and the Steelers aren't older team.
- 59:28[SPEAKER_02]: A lot of important guys in that roster are up there in age, so it'll be interesting to see the way that plays out over the course of year, but if I wouldn't be stunned if that might be something worth paying attention to when we get a little later into the year.
- 59:45[SPEAKER_00]: Falcon 22 Viking 6 this was a game that probably elicited the biggest sigh of relief from a general manager in modern in battle general manager history when you have your two first round picks log sacks and then what you're third in your fourth round picks log interceptions.
- 1:00:04[SPEAKER_00]: in this game, and all of a sudden, the defense that you've rebuilt on the fly overnight, holds a team that came back and had a really good win in week one to six points in prime time.
- 1:00:15[SPEAKER_00]: This is the Jeff Olbrick effect.
- 1:00:17[SPEAKER_00]: I think in full swing, he wanted to get in there and teach.
- 1:00:21[SPEAKER_00]: This is why Kyle Shanahan wanted him as his defensive coordinator.
- 1:00:24[SPEAKER_00]: This is why Woody Johnson fired Robert Solid.
- 1:00:26[SPEAKER_00]: I get to look at him and you're seeing and real time him rescuing a defense.
- 1:00:32[SPEAKER_00]: from a defensive head coach who needed that, needed that help, and Reemors, again, has to consider himself incredibly lucky.
- 1:00:41[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, this is, um, Do you worry about changing McCarthy now?
- 1:00:50[SPEAKER_02]: Based on the bears and seeing the bears now against another team, and
- 1:00:57[SPEAKER_02]: Like, just the bears and the bears play the lines.
- 1:01:01[SPEAKER_02]: So the lines are, you know, I think we know what they are offensively.
- 1:01:04[SPEAKER_02]: But like, if you're starting to put those puzzle pieces together, you'll a little worried about where JJ is.
- 1:01:09[SPEAKER_00]: So here's what you...
- 1:01:11[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not quite where Chris Collins worth was last night, which was just destroying the escape.
- 1:01:17[SPEAKER_00]: He was just all over JJ McCarthy.
- 1:01:20[SPEAKER_00]: I think that you've got to work it out.
- 1:01:23[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Kevin O'Connell, and again, I think we assume when things go well that someone isn't in foulable genius and when things go horribly that they're a complete and total moron and everybody ends up towards the middle somewhere.
- 1:01:36[SPEAKER_00]: And so, did Kevin O'Connell see
- 1:01:39[SPEAKER_00]: What he wanted to see in the spring, which is why they didn't bring in Aaron Rodgers, which is why they haven't brought back her cousins, you know, what is he not seeing in these games now that he saw in the spring.
- 1:01:51[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you have to give him a couple weeks to retool just.
- 1:01:56[SPEAKER_00]: what six days ago, J.J.
- 1:01:57[SPEAKER_00]: McCarthy was the, and was the conference player of the week.
- 1:02:02[SPEAKER_00]: And so I don't know.
- 1:02:04[SPEAKER_00]: I would say, like, let's, let's give it a second.
- 1:02:06[SPEAKER_00]: Now.
- 1:02:07[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:02:07[SPEAKER_00]: If it continues, sure.
- 1:02:09[SPEAKER_00]: And there are some concerning things, but I wouldn't, I would add this.
- 1:02:13[SPEAKER_00]: I would say that a lot of what people are saying are McCarthy's fatal flaws.
- 1:02:18[SPEAKER_00]: I remember coaches in scouts saying we're fatal flaws in Samdarnal that they are no longer saying or fatal flaws.
- 1:02:24[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I think JJ will be fine.
- 1:02:26[SPEAKER_02]: I think the one thing that I think, you know, again, like people don't look at these things because they're just boring to talk about offensive linemen, but I do think
- 1:02:37[SPEAKER_02]: not having Christian dare saw a major major factor because they invested so much in fixing their offensive line with you're going and getting Kelly in fries from the colds and then drafting down in Jackson in the first round and like there's another example of like and we talked about with the giants where it's like like I hear people say left tackle has become an
- 1:03:06[SPEAKER_02]: like more often than not when I look at it, I see more offensive lines that are kind of average that become good because they've got a great left tackle and more offensive lines that are good otherwise that become dumpster fires because they don't have a left tackle.
- 1:03:20[SPEAKER_02]: Then I can never remember happening in the past.
- 1:03:23[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I think about like those ramp, those great ramps and Niners teams of the last decade and the ramps had Andrew Whitworth and how many more of the alignment could you name?
- 1:03:33[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 1:03:33[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, haven't signed, but that might be it, right?
- 1:03:36[SPEAKER_02]: Sanded with the Niners, like how many great offensive linemen have the Niners had over the last decade other than Trent Williams.
- 1:03:44[SPEAKER_02]: Yep.
- 1:03:44[SPEAKER_02]: And Joe Staley before him.
- 1:03:46[SPEAKER_02]: You know, and so, and then you look at these team and it's just, I feel like if you don't have your, if you don't have a left tackle, you are lost.
- 1:03:54[SPEAKER_02]: And I think we're seeing it now with the way Minnesota has looked on balance through two weeks and, um,
- 1:04:03[SPEAKER_02]: it's why like they
- 1:04:05[SPEAKER_02]: Like I thought it was like a little panicky for them to trade for camera Robinson last year when they didn't, but now you see why they did it.
- 1:04:12[SPEAKER_02]: You know, even though the camera Robinson isn't a great player, he at least could get you like keep you on level ground at that position.
- 1:04:20[SPEAKER_02]: Whereas like if you're throwing out guys like school was out there and he's like he looked, I mean,
- 1:04:35[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, I think this is going to look like a different team when Derosog is back in there.
- 1:04:40[SPEAKER_02]: That's the other part of it.
- 1:04:42[SPEAKER_00]: my concern is if you're the Vikings is what in Zach Robinson's research led him to believe that I'm going to this game and I'm running the ball 40 times.
- 1:04:52[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 1:04:53[SPEAKER_00]: That was interesting too.
- 1:04:54[SPEAKER_00]: I mean how easy it looked early in the game.
- 1:04:55[SPEAKER_00]: And how easy it looked?
- 1:04:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah six point five yards of carry for Pijon Robinson four point eight for Tyler Algier and the Vikings are jumping off sides in critical moments during that game, especially at the end when they're trying to get the ball back and can book out the another shot.
- 1:05:10[SPEAKER_00]: And this again, I mean, I think I'm in a sound repetitive when I say this, but when you have essentially a player called defense like Minnesota, and then you don't have Harrison Smith, and then you don't have Blake Cashman, and then you don't have all these guys, like it's snowballs to the point where you're flipping the own is all the way back on the coordinator who was
- 1:05:28[SPEAKER_00]: popular there and did a good job by taking all these little kind of pieces and making a cohesive defense out of it.
- 1:05:35[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 1:05:35[SPEAKER_00]: You're losing a lot of guys there.
- 1:05:36[SPEAKER_00]: You losing a lot of band power and the fact that, you know, be shown Robinson's gonna run on anybody, but the fact that they went into that game and your secondary kind of was your weak point perception wise at the beginning of the season.
- 1:05:50[SPEAKER_00]: And they're like, no, no, we're gonna, we're gonna absolutely just poke this thing to death.
- 1:05:54[SPEAKER_00]: That's what scares me more than anything else for the time of
- 1:05:57[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:05:58[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:05:59[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:05:59[SPEAKER_02]: So I think it's, I think, you know, some of the stuff we'll take care of itself naturally.
- 1:06:05[SPEAKER_02]: And I think Kevin O'Connell is too good at coach to what this thing circle would drain.
- 1:06:09[SPEAKER_02]: But, you know, it's, I think it's fair to look at the first three quarters of the bear's game.
- 1:06:15[SPEAKER_02]: And then the four quarters against Atlanta, I'd be at least a little bit concerned.
- 1:06:21[SPEAKER_00]: All right, let's just motor down the rest of them.
- 1:06:23[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going to quite call it the lightning round, but tell me if you have any thoughts on these Albert, but I'm just going to list.
- 1:06:30[SPEAKER_00]: So the Rams beat the Titans 33 to 19.
- 1:06:32[SPEAKER_00]: The Patriots beat the Dolphins 33 to 27.
- 1:06:34[SPEAKER_00]: The 49ers beat the Saints 26 to 21.
- 1:06:35[SPEAKER_00]: The Bills beat the Jets 30 to 10.
- 1:06:36[SPEAKER_00]: The Rams beat the Prounds 41 to 17.
- 1:06:45[SPEAKER_00]: and the Cardinals beat the Panthers 22 to 22 in a game that wasn't really as close as it looked.
- 1:06:52[SPEAKER_00]: I think that there are, I think that some of the things that we can draw out here, I think there are some legitimate hot cease considerations here.
- 1:07:00[SPEAKER_00]: I mean Mike McDaniels got to be on the lookout.
- 1:07:02[SPEAKER_02]: I'd be, yeah, and I think the player is not only meeting like that's not great, you know?
- 1:07:04[SPEAKER_02]: And I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I,
- 1:07:09[SPEAKER_02]: I think the problem my medial has right now is that you went to the year with all of this noise about what the environment there was like and is this is the program to permissive with young with with with star players and is there a double standard there and
- 1:07:28[SPEAKER_02]: If they are actually rebuilding, can he be a strong enough leader to guide them through that?
- 1:07:36[SPEAKER_02]: And then you have the players only meeting, which I can tell you what was said in that meeting was like, like the captain's talked about accountability and how the NFL is going to judge you, regardless of your circumstances or your coaching.
- 1:07:50[SPEAKER_02]: And so like I I think it was sort of like this closing ranks like this is about us not them type of thing for the players themselves And if that doesn't go well, I don't know what the next card this played there is, you know, and they lose your pages team and I think it's getting better, but it's still bottom half clearly bottom half the league, right?
- 1:08:15[SPEAKER_02]: You know, they like they now go to Buffalo on Thursday night and we know the way these stand-in-one games can kind of turn up the volume on these things.
- 1:08:26[SPEAKER_00]: I
- 1:08:28[SPEAKER_00]: I think that Mike McDaniel has to look out.
- 1:08:30[SPEAKER_00]: I think that Brian Callahan is not quite there yet, but needs to look out.
- 1:08:37[SPEAKER_00]: We're seeing Kim or do some stuff on his own and then we're seeing the offense really kind of fall off a cliff after the first half in both of those games and failed to make some critical adjustments.
- 1:08:48[SPEAKER_00]: If I'm Dave Canales, I'm starting to look a little bit concerned, you kind of shot yourself in the foot at the end of last year by building that momentum.
- 1:08:56[SPEAKER_00]: And then having it completely just fall through the floorboards over the first two weeks the season again this defense is not good.
- 1:09:05[SPEAKER_00]: It's not a it's not a responsibly staffed NFL defense.
- 1:09:09[SPEAKER_00]: It's just not and it's not something that you can do where in rounds two through seven just fix it overnight.
- 1:09:16[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 1:09:17[SPEAKER_00]: And I guess you can say that the falcons are kind of doing that, but the falcons took two edge rushers in the first round.
- 1:09:22[SPEAKER_00]: the Panthers.
- 1:09:23[SPEAKER_00]: That's me.
- 1:09:24[SPEAKER_02]: That's me.
- 1:09:24[SPEAKER_02]: It was the big question.
- 1:09:25[SPEAKER_02]: It was like, okay, like so, you know, you keep investing in the offense and you keep putting, putting resources into the offense.
- 1:09:34[SPEAKER_02]: The defense was historically bad last year.
- 1:09:36[SPEAKER_02]: And I think most people would tell you that the way the draft class broke down, you know,
- 1:09:43[SPEAKER_02]: There were more options on defense where the Panthers were picking and then they were on offense, you know.
- 1:09:48[SPEAKER_02]: So are you forcing it because that's the best offense of player there in your mind?
- 1:09:52[SPEAKER_02]: And there was some disagreement on Tepic Millen, you know?
- 1:09:55[SPEAKER_02]: And Jalen Walker was seen as a guy who was a really good fit for for for for for for ishra of roast defense and now he's in your division.
- 1:10:07[SPEAKER_02]: He's right.
- 1:10:08[SPEAKER_02]: And now he's already and now he's already
- 1:10:13[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I mean, I think like the way they came out of the gate and the first two games not great.
- 1:10:22[SPEAKER_02]: And I like the clock and the fight and all of that, but I also watch Bryce young and I like Bryce.
- 1:10:30[SPEAKER_02]: Do you ever think he's going to be like do you watch him and like he can be functional out there like do you ever think he's going to be a great NFL quarterback?
- 1:10:38[SPEAKER_02]: Is there anything that knows you that?
- 1:10:40[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's weird, right?
- 1:10:41[SPEAKER_00]: Because when you throw for 328 yards, three types of things in an interception, but you're really smart.
- 1:10:47[SPEAKER_00]: You're really smart.
- 1:10:48[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 1:10:49[SPEAKER_00]: You're really smart.
- 1:10:49[SPEAKER_00]: You're really smart.
- 1:10:50[SPEAKER_02]: Is there something?
- 1:10:51[SPEAKER_02]: Is there anything that jumps out at you?
- 1:10:52[SPEAKER_02]: It was like.
- 1:10:53[SPEAKER_02]: He's going to be like, like, I see this next step being taken.
- 1:10:57[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I even saw that with JJ McCarthy at the end of the Monday night game.
- 1:11:01[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, okay, like you can see it.
- 1:11:03[SPEAKER_02]: He's playing fast, he's decisive, he's got presence in the pocket, the ball, the way a ball comes off his hand, it looks good.
- 1:11:12[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I just don't know that you really see that as much of a price.
- 1:11:14[SPEAKER_02]: But we'll see.
- 1:11:16[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, I think if he's on the 49ers, he's like leading the NFL and completion percentage.
- 1:11:21[SPEAKER_00]: Like Matt Jones, like our boy, Matt McCorkill, good for him.
- 1:11:27[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you know, he looked great and like he looked great.
- 1:11:31[SPEAKER_00]: It's so funny to round it out by, by saying that this was the quarterback that everyone thought that Kyle Shanahan was going to take all along.
- 1:11:38[SPEAKER_00]: I, and people can say this about like, oh, well, yeah, it just proves that you guys don't know anything.
- 1:11:43[SPEAKER_00]: There were people on his own staff that thought that they were taking back Jones until like, I don't know, like a month before the draft.
- 1:11:50[SPEAKER_02]: Well, the reason they didn't take him, it's actually kind of interesting.
- 1:11:52[SPEAKER_02]: The reason they didn't take him is because like Kyle looked at it and said,
- 1:11:58[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, like half the NFL runs my offense, right?
- 1:12:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 1:12:01[SPEAKER_02]: So all of these defenses are practicing against my offense.
- 1:12:05[SPEAKER_02]: So if I can keep running my offense, Mac Jones is a guy I can bring in and can run that offense at a really high level.
- 1:12:15[SPEAKER_02]: And so if I want to just kind of keep running the offense as I've always run it with tweaks and adjustments and changes,
- 1:12:23[SPEAKER_02]: then Mac Jones is the guy, but if I want to grow the offense and add to it and make it something that hasn't been before, then I need a plus athlete.
- 1:12:33[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I need somebody who can do more outside of the structure of the offense, and that was trail ants.
- 1:12:39[SPEAKER_02]: And then he winds up with Brian with Brock Perti, who's not Mac Jones, I think he's more town of the Mac Jones,
- 1:12:51[SPEAKER_02]: wound up circling back to the original answer, you know, just with a different guy.
- 1:12:57[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 1:12:58[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, good quarterbacks and quarterbacks who can process function well in that offense.
- 1:13:04[SPEAKER_00]: And it's a perfectly, it's a perfectly good situation for Mac Jones.
- 1:13:08[SPEAKER_00]: That's why like, you know, not that I don't mean this is an offense to Brock Perti, but I wasn't freaking out at all when all of a sudden, you know, you're just like, oh, they gotta go to Mac Jones.
- 1:13:17[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, okay, they're gonna beat the Saints.
- 1:13:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, right.
- 1:13:19[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, is there anything that we're freaking out about?
- 1:13:22[SPEAKER_02]: I just, I'm fascinated by the Niners because I think don't you think they're like building this call us now where like they've been through so much already that if they get healthy in November, December, now all of a sudden they've got all of these other guys that have played, you know what I mean?
- 1:13:38[SPEAKER_02]: Like it's one of those where it's like and I'm not talking about Max specifically here because obviously you can only play one quarter back.
- 1:13:45[SPEAKER_02]: Unless Kyle wants to get really creative, but, but I think that they're playing like a lot of guys are now getting experience where it feels like they're going to be a deeper team if they can get healthy with their star players in November and December.
- 1:14:03[SPEAKER_02]: And maybe it's one of those questions like where are they ever really going to be healthy based the age of the guys, which is the same question we were asking what Pittsburgh, but I think if that all comes together for them, they could really have something waiting the year.
- 1:14:16[SPEAKER_00]: to more notes.
- 1:14:16[SPEAKER_00]: We got just in, I mean, probably looking at Tyrod Taylor at this point for at least a week in the jets.
- 1:14:22[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, this was a blowout of epic proportions.
- 1:14:24[SPEAKER_00]: It was a James Cook game.
- 1:14:26[SPEAKER_00]: He just runs all over the jets, Aaron Glenn saying that's not who we are.
- 1:14:31[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see.
- 1:14:32[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 1:14:32[SPEAKER_02]: We can say this too.
- 1:14:33[SPEAKER_02]: I think we can tie two of these games into one here.
- 1:14:36[SPEAKER_02]: A plus effort from Baltimore and Buffalo coming off of what like a mentally exhausting physically exhausting Sunday night game and this would be it would have been the perfect spot for one of those teams to slip up against an inferior opponent you didn't see it.
- 1:14:52[SPEAKER_02]: And so I think both of those teams deserve credit for, again, showing who they are, you know, I think that's a harder thing than people give a credit for, like Buffalo and Baltimore showed exactly who they are by coming out of those, though that that just street fight, you know, on Sunday night and playing the way that they did.
- 1:15:14[SPEAKER_00]: For sure.
- 1:15:14[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I think that there's always a chance that you can get clipped in games like that, especially I thought the jets would be one of those teams that would look a little bit more competitive against the bills on Sunday.
- 1:15:27[SPEAKER_00]: That to me was was disappointing, but
- 1:15:30[SPEAKER_00]: No, such as life.
- 1:15:31[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe Buffalo is that good.
- 1:15:33[SPEAKER_00]: I think Buffalo is that good.
- 1:15:34[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm feeling good about keeping them.
- 1:15:37[SPEAKER_00]: See, I had this argument with someone else like so I was high on the colds this off season.
- 1:15:43[SPEAKER_00]: I picked the bills to win the Super Bowl, which is not, you know, crazy.
- 1:15:46[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, in terms of the official pick of the podcast.
- 1:15:49[SPEAKER_00]: That's the official pick of the podcast, but you know, weird things happen over the course of the season, but I want credit for being right now, because And the reason why is because like, okay, and like three weeks, the chiefs are going to trade for Tyre killing transform and look freaking awesome again, but that's not something that we would have gleaned
- 1:16:11[SPEAKER_00]: from all of the research and the reporting and the film watching and the preseason game watching.
- 1:16:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we did.
- 1:16:18[SPEAKER_00]: Well, the offseason, right?
- 1:16:19[SPEAKER_00]: But no.
- 1:16:20[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I mean, let me just give you guys.
- 1:16:22[SPEAKER_02]: Let me just give everybody out there some advice on how to handle achieves.
- 1:16:26[SPEAKER_02]: However, all the lessons you learned and however you thought about the Patriots for all of those years.
- 1:16:31[SPEAKER_02]: Now, I know.
- 1:16:32[SPEAKER_02]: It's a copy.
- 1:16:34[SPEAKER_02]: Wait, you do not like just every lesson that you learned.
- 1:16:37[SPEAKER_02]: Every doubt that you had about Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, every issue you had with their roster building, every and and and.
- 1:16:47[SPEAKER_02]: Like I live up here so I remember what that was like every like you get to October 15th and it'd be like they're not the same and what are they going to do and then three months later they're in the FCC championship game which like take all of those lessons you learn from following New England and a lot of you hating New England for all those years and apply them directly
- 1:17:17[SPEAKER_00]: Um, take that first take copy paste, um, because you know what?
- 1:17:24[SPEAKER_00]: Even Bill Bellachek is just given it to Richmond right now and still good.
- 1:17:29[SPEAKER_00]: No, just kidding.
- 1:17:30[SPEAKER_00]: That game was awful made my eyes hurt.
- 1:17:32[SPEAKER_00]: I think you see this week.
- 1:17:33[SPEAKER_02]: I think you see this week.
- 1:17:34[SPEAKER_02]: I think you see this week.
- 1:17:35[SPEAKER_02]: It's getting a little tougher.
- 1:17:36[SPEAKER_02]: I think they might get their doors blown off.
- 1:17:38[SPEAKER_00]: Um, all right.
- 1:17:39[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that does it for us this week.
- 1:17:42[SPEAKER_00]: A very, uh, very newsy, uh, very rep revelatory week to, I guess.
- 1:17:48[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 1:17:48[SPEAKER_00]: I learned a lot.
- 1:17:50[SPEAKER_00]: Learned a lot.
- 1:17:51[SPEAKER_00]: Learned a lot.
- 1:17:56[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think it even's ever said that to you, but we are getting ready for a Monday night double header.
- 1:18:04[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see if I can stay awake for that one.
- 1:18:06[SPEAKER_00]: And we will be back later on this week to bring you.
- 1:18:10[SPEAKER_00]: And to week three, oh my god.
- 1:18:11[SPEAKER_00]: Happening week three.
- 1:18:31[UNKNOWN]: You
