- 0:02A listener production.
- 0:04Welcome to the Motorsport Brief.
- 0:06It's Thursday, the 14th of September, 2023.
- 0:09Couple of big events in our part of the world this weekend with the first of the supercars Enduros, the Sandown 500 and the Singapore Grand Prix for Formula One.
- 0:20Round 15 of 22 for the F1 season.
- 0:25Hi, everybody.
- 0:25Greg Rust with you for this edition of the Rusty's Garage Shortcast, coming to you from Singapore.
- 0:31Shortly, a special guest who has been thrust into the limelight and has grabbed the opportunity with both hands, determined to show his potential and his talent.
- 0:41While we are talking F1, don't forget Louise Goodman is a recent addition to our feature or long-form library.
- 0:48The respected F1 pit reporter is actually here working for the weekend.
- 0:53Some great stories in that addition there.
- 0:56Being in an F1 two-seater when it crashed and working with Martin Brundle, Eddie Jordan, Eddie Irvine and much more.
- 1:03We have also just released an ep with our partner, Bendix Brakes, to support the four-wheel driver and super ute racer, Dave Casey.
- 1:12Now, he's a bit of a character.
- 1:14They call him Mudflap, something different for you to enjoy there.
- 1:18He is a proud North Queenslander with a bit of inner drive that may surprise you.
- 1:23And it sounds like he has unfinished business in the stadium's super trucks.
- 1:28For this edition of The Brief, I have headed to a hotel here in Singapore to catch up with Liam Lawson.
- 1:35Now, you may hear some lobby music in the background.
- 1:37We've got a couple of coffees to enjoy as well.
- 1:40He has done a superb job subbing for Daniel Ricciardo since Dan's unfortunate crash there in Zanvoort and the injury to his left hand.
- 1:49Liam will be back in the seat for this weekend's race with Alphatorre.
- 1:53He has been in that F1 reserve driver role now for about...
- 1:5818 months.
- 1:59So freakish, unfortunate set of circumstances that have opened the door for now.
- 2:05And he has so far made quite an impression.
- 2:09Letting those know in the paddock here and those of us that are watching and enjoying Formula One as well, just what sort of a driver he is and his incredible commitment that he should really be on the grid full time next year.
- 2:22Now, that opportunity for 2024 doesn't look like on paper, right?
- 2:27as though it will materialize at the moment but as you'll hear in the convo he is leaving no stone unturned.
- 2:37Liam welcome.
- 2:39Thank you thanks for having me.
- 2:41My wife has literally just messaged from New Zealand to say there was a story on the news there tonight that your mum and dad are on the way over.
- 2:49Is that true they're coming to experience the race and to be here with you for this?
- 2:53Yeah, they are.
- 2:55It's funny, this race is a little bit special actually because when I was a kid, for some reason Singapore was always my favourite race to do on the Formula 1 games.
- 3:06I always liked it a lot.
- 3:06I think because it was a night race, it just looked really, really cool.
- 3:10And my dad always promised me from when I was like seven years old, every year he was like, yep, one day I'll take you to the Singapore Grand Prix.
- 3:18And we never did, but obviously I had the opportunity to bring them to this race and to be actually racing in it.
- 3:29Yeah, it's pretty cool.
- 3:30In the whirlwind of what you've experienced over the last few weeks, is this their first race to come and see you as an F1 driver?
- 3:37It is.
- 3:37They hadn't come to any Super Formula races yet.
- 3:41So this is the first time they've seen me race this year and obviously the first time they've seen me drive in Formula 1.
- 3:47Oh, cool.
- 3:48Tell me about, there's a great thing people can find from, I think, AlphaTauri, they made a nice piece on YouTube and on social media of the kind of,
- 3:56craziness that unfolded in in zanvoort stuff like um you being in the red bull garage unfortunately when the crash happened for dan and then ultimately getting the the confirmation the rubber stamp while you're in the driver's briefing that you would be you would be racing what the heck went through your mind and you talk about it being this massive mountain to climb with very little time it's basically what it was yeah it's it's um it's um it's
- 4:24We talked a bit about it before.
- 4:25You know, normally you have, when you're going to drive in Formula 1, you have a bit of time to prepare for it.
- 4:29Normally a couple of months at least.
- 4:32Or a heads up at least.
- 4:33So for us, obviously in this reserve position, it's a great opportunity.
- 4:38And, you know, I try to be ready for every single race because obviously there's always this possibility.
- 4:43But it's so rare that it becomes almost...
- 4:48it doesn't really seem like it ever is going to happen.
- 4:50And obviously there's never the circumstances that I want to join Formula One.
- 4:53I don't want to join because somebody gets injured.
- 4:56Um, and obviously in an ideal world you get to prepare for the season, but, um, when that opportunity comes, you have to take it.
- 5:04And, um, for me it came in Zandvoort.
- 5:08Um, so it was obviously, honestly, I went through probably two hours of, you know, a lot of anxiety, a lot of, um,
- 5:17stress um and then it was just basically the settling in the the reality of you know basically i have to just i have to do this i have to make the most of it and do it in the best way i can um and then there was just so much work that um anything else sort of just got put aside and it was just focused on on working and trying to be prepared for it which to be honest wasn't wasn't such a bad thing the way it panned out ultimately um
- 5:42knowing the last-minute nature of it, knowing kind of the tough run that they've had with that car so far this year, I mean, it actually was a pretty impressive debut, mate.
- 5:50Do you feel like that on balance?
- 5:53I know you would have loved points or something, okay, but... Yeah, I think that's...
- 5:56I think we're targeting points, and I think it was a decent race, but...
- 6:04you can always look back at it and basically look at things you could have done better.
- 6:09In what way?
- 6:09In what area?
- 6:10I think for Zandvoort, we lost like 30 seconds at the start with pit stops.
- 6:15We had a penalty because of the pit stop.
- 6:17We got stacked as well.
- 6:20So we lost this massive chunk of time.
- 6:22And at the time, I didn't care.
- 6:23I just wanted to get out and just do some laps.
- 6:24I didn't care that we were basically put down the back of the field.
- 6:28But...
- 6:30I think just those things, you know, looking back in the inns, we had the red flag and it helped us recover to 13th.
- 6:35And it's like, oh, wow, if we hadn't had all that stuff happen, maybe we could have been to the points.
- 6:39And the same thing with Monza, to be that close to points and miss out.
- 6:44But like I said, you can always look back on stuff that you could have done better.
- 6:47Can you see potential in this car?
- 6:48Is it getting better?
- 6:50For sure.
- 6:51I think we are...
- 6:54Moving in the right direction, especially now.
- 6:56I think in the future, there's going to be more, hopefully, collaboration with Red Bull as much as we can.
- 7:03And I think...
- 7:07Even in Monza, from where we were on Friday to where we were on Saturday, was a big step.
- 7:15You know, we actually weren't very confident on Friday and then made a big step overnight.
- 7:20And it made a big difference.
- 7:22So if we can keep doing that, obviously Singapore is a very unique circuit, but...
- 7:27Yeah, I think there's definitely potential.
- 7:29I think Yuki as well has been so...
- 7:31I mean, he's got points this year, but he's also been so close to points so many times, the P11s all the time.
- 7:37So there's definitely potential, yeah.
- 7:40Jordy Peters, who works for Motorsport New Zealand, reminded me that you and Yuki go back...
- 7:45Quite a ways, mate, with what was the Toyota Racing Series in New Zealand and so on.
- 7:50Has it been nice to – I mean, you've probably kept in touch anyway, but to now be working as teammates?
- 7:55It actually has because I think once you're in F1, you just get immersed in this world.
- 8:01And it's very hard to, I mean, have time or have any – yeah, really time to do anything –
- 8:10Like you used to.
- 8:11So growing up, we raced each other in Formula 3.
- 8:13We did the Toyota Racing Series.
- 8:15And we spent a lot of time together.
- 8:18And obviously he went to Formula 1 quite early and then he moved away.
- 8:23And I think you just, yeah, you get immersed in this world and that's really your only focus.
- 8:28So, yeah, it's quite cool to obviously, now he's effectively, I guess, team leader.
- 8:34And it's been great.
- 8:35He's been helpful.
- 8:36It's been good to learn off of how he drives the car.
- 8:40Because at the moment, obviously, I just need all the help I can get.
- 8:43Are you going about it differently to him, or are you both kind of heading down a similar path?
- 8:46I think we're both heading for points, obviously, which is the main target.
- 8:51But I guess a slightly different approach.
- 8:55For him, he's been to all these tracks that we go to now.
- 8:58And for me, it's still...
- 9:01A lot to learn, really.
- 9:02So I think the way we go into, for example, the way we set our run plans for practice, his is probably going to be more optimized on focusing on car setup.
- 9:11Whereas for me, we've got to account for the fact that I have to learn everything at the same time.
- 9:17So slightly different, but by qualifying, I want to be in a position where I'm comfortable enough to be able to throw things on the car and try and improve.
- 9:28And obviously, fortunately, with Formula 1, you have quite a lot of practice time, which is good.
- 9:32That's what I need.
- 9:33Has Daniel, there's been some chat that Daniel's been kind of helpful with little bits of advice or whatever.
- 9:38Has there been a bit of contact while he's on the road to recovery?
- 9:41Not so much on the road to recovery.
- 9:43I think for him, he's just been focused on recovering and being very isolated to that, which...
- 9:47which obviously I completely understand.
- 9:49But before he had a surgery when he was still in Zandvoort, he was very open to helping out, to advice.
- 9:56Obviously, he's a great dude.
- 9:59So never something you want to see, but he was definitely very supportive in the situation, which I appreciated.
- 10:05When you look back on it now, I mean, in this part of the world, there were two...
- 10:10kinds of emotions in in the one sense Aussies were thrilled that he got an opportunity to come back and then I when I watched the news in New Zealand everyone was gutted that you that you missed out um when he was given the the call up to replace Nick like that how close to did you come to that and how did you kind of feel when you when you learned the news at that stage
- 10:33To be honest, it was at the time a little bit frustrating because obviously… You were in the air at the time too.
- 10:41I think you found out when you landed too, didn't you?
- 10:43It was the nature of the way I found out, to be honest.
- 10:45I was flying to Japan for a super formula race.
- 10:48And the flight I happened to be on had absolutely no Wi-Fi.
- 10:50So for 15 hours, I took off.
- 10:53And I think like two hours after I took off, the announcement was made.
- 10:57So I landed 11 hours later than that.
- 11:01And obviously, when I turned my phone on, I had 11 hours of notifications come through.
- 11:07And so it was a bit of a shock, but only for a little bit, to be honest.
- 11:11Obviously, when I saw it,
- 11:14you feel like maybe you're losing a shot at Formula One, but when you actually think about the way the decision was made, it was the right call for someone.
- 11:24The way Alfa Tauri is at the moment, or especially at the time, they, you know, I guess need somebody with a bit of experience.
- 11:32I would have been coming in learning a huge amount.
- 11:35And...
- 11:36I didn't really, at the time, have a leg to stand on to say that I could come in and deliver straight away.
- 11:41You know, there's no evidence that I could have done that.
- 11:43So at the time, the way the decision was made, I completely understood.
- 11:48But obviously now I have this opportunity and I'm trying to use it.
- 11:51You are grabbing it with both hands, which I reckon is awesome.
- 11:55So you grew up loving the Singapore track in a game sense.
- 11:59Now you're about to do it for real.
- 12:00Typically it runs the full two hours.
- 12:03It's hot, it's humid, it's grueling.
- 12:05What have you done prep-wise for this?
- 12:08Yeah, it's going to be a tough one.
- 12:11The biggest thing is whenever you step into a new car, especially a Formula 1 car, when you're not completely comfortable with,
- 12:20the way you naturally drive is a little bit more tense and you just end up using more, more energy than, than what you should.
- 12:25I guess if you can imagine how max drives, you know, somebody who's been in that car for a long time, he's super, super comfortable.
- 12:31Um, he's completely free when he, when he drives.
- 12:33Whereas for me, um,
- 12:36I'm probably having to think about quite a lot more than I'd ideally like to be, and you end up driving a bit more tense.
- 12:42So the race is Monza was pretty physical, and I'm obviously expecting this place to be.
- 12:46So mainly the heat, we did a lot of heat training last week, especially.
- 12:50What does that entail?
- 12:52So my trainer has a gym, and then he's got like a little clinic room next to the gym, which he can heat up.
- 12:57So basically heat chamber stuff, basically high intensity work and really hot, humid conditions.
- 13:04Basically getting used to being extremely uncomfortable.
- 13:07So wearing lots of clothing, sweating out.
- 13:10Obviously, all you want to do is take off clothes when you're like that.
- 13:14But just basically, yeah, trying to be as uncomfortable as possible.
- 13:21So that side of it's been cool to do, but obviously just pretty hard.
- 13:28But it's going to be needed.
- 13:28This place is going to be extremely physical.
- 13:30We'll take a quick break.
- 13:31You are listening to the Motorsport Brief here with Liam Lawson on Rusty's Garage.
- 13:39We're back, coming to you from Singapore for this special edition of the Rusty's Garage shortcast with AlphaTauri's Liam Lawson.
- 13:49Working with the engineering team there at Alphatory, what are you expecting of the car here, relative to some of the other venues that we've been to, be it Zandvoort, Monza, whatever, this very different street track, obviously.
- 14:02Do you think the car might be pretty reasonable?
- 14:05Well, I mean, we do obviously simulator work for each race, and the simulator work we did was pretty positive, but it's super hard to sell.
- 14:12In Formula One,
- 14:14Whenever you're moving forward, everybody else is moving forward as well.
- 14:16Everyone's developing.
- 14:17And even if you come to a race with an upgrade or with potential, other teams are also making that step forward.
- 14:27That's what's really tough about the situation.
- 14:31But I think the first thing for me is to get my head around the track.
- 14:37And then if I'm comfortable enough, then we'll see what sort of speed we have.
- 14:41But I'm hoping so.
- 14:43I'm hoping to be close to the points.
- 14:46The general media might sort of say, what's he been doing this year?
- 14:48What's this Japanese super formula thing?
- 14:50But ironically...
- 14:52that they're a faster, kind of more powerful machine.
- 14:54There are benefits to you actually going off and doing this, even though some might have expected you to perhaps stay in the tiered structure of F2 beneath Formula 1.
- 15:04It's been so good.
- 15:06Has it?
- 15:06Yeah, to do Super Formula this year has been, it's honestly been exactly, for the situation I've just been thrown in,
- 15:14it's been exactly what I needed to do.
- 15:15Um, and had I done another season of formula two, there's no way I would have been this, this feeling that obviously you can only feel so ready for a situation like this, but I wouldn't be this ready.
- 15:24Um, for sure.
- 15:26I think right now there's, there's a big step from F2 to F1 and, um, super formula for me has really bridged that gap.
- 15:33Um,
- 15:34As you say, the car's a lot faster.
- 15:35So it's closer to Formula 1 than it is to Formula 2, especially when it comes to the setup of the car and how important it is.
- 15:44The regulations are more open, so the teams are actually developing the cars within regulations, obviously, but they're developing and definitely for us as drivers to be a part of that and to learn exactly what they're doing, especially with the aero side.
- 15:57I mean, Formula 1 is...
- 15:58so much about aerodynamics um to to really learn about that has been really really good um a lot more you can change with setup on the go as well so um yeah mechanically it's just been really good for me to learn that uh and and it's helped give me a lot more of an understanding of of formula one as well the only thing you don't get the only thing that's really hard to prepare for
- 16:22On that side is the battery system, having the MTUK, having the hybrid system in the car.
- 16:27That's something that you don't experience in anything else unless you go endurance racing.
- 16:33So that's the only thing that's, yeah, really you have to learn when you go to Formula One.
- 16:38Sport goes from here to Japan, to Suzuka.
- 16:41It'd be nice to think you would get the opportunity potentially to go there.
- 16:45I don't know if that's been okayed yet or where that is all at.
- 16:48Daniel was talking at one point about perhaps targeting a return at Doha, which means that you could...
- 16:53potentially drive the AlphaTauri at Suzuka.
- 16:56Given the miles you've had there this year, that would hopefully be a nice thing if it came to pass.
- 17:00It would be great, obviously, but it completely depends on the situation.
- 17:04Right now I'm preparing for all the future events coming up so that whatever happens, basically I'm ready for it.
- 17:11But obviously the call will be made close to the time because they're going to try and give Daniel as long as possible.
- 17:17So...
- 17:18Yeah, at this stage, I have absolutely no idea, but it would be nice to do.
- 17:23Obviously, knowing the track, we raced there in Super Formula in a couple of months' time as well, or in a month's time, so a little bit of extra preparation.
- 17:33Yeah, it would be cool to do.
- 17:35Have you had a pause moment where you've actually been able to sit and take this in?
- 17:39I mean, it was a crazy rush to Zandvoort, you know, in the car, you had to do the job, practice qualifying and then the race.
- 17:46Have you had a little moment to go...
- 17:48Hang on a minute.
- 17:49Here's this kid from New Zealand who not all that long ago was racing in the Toyota Racing Series and then headed off to take on the world.
- 17:56Have you paused to realize that you're racing in Formula 1?
- 18:00Super briefly.
- 18:01I have a little bit, but it's been super, super brief.
- 18:04Just because I know with the nature of the situation that...
- 18:11As we said before, you normally go into a season of Formula 1, you have a season to prove yourself, or at least half a season, let's say.
- 18:18And in this situation, I know now that this is really the only thing that matters.
- 18:21This is what I'll be judged on.
- 18:24And I don't have long, so I need to make the most of it.
- 18:26So I think when it's done, whenever I have to step aside, then I'll look back on it probably and appreciate how...
- 18:33how incredible it is.
- 18:34But right now, I don't have time.
- 18:36I just got to try and focus on basically getting through it.
- 18:39I want to basically be able to look back on it and know that there's nothing more I could have done.
- 18:44I'd hate to get to the end of it and basically go, I wish I'd spent more time doing this or something like that.
- 18:50You won't use these words, so I'm going to use them for you.
- 18:52I reckon you've impressed in a lot of ways, hopefully enough that it makes the consideration for 24 or an opening easier for you.
- 19:05You talk in the video about sitting down with Dr Marco before all this even happened, before Daniel even crashed and kind of pleading your case with him about why you want to be and should be in Formula One.
- 19:17I don't know what you can tell us, but has that helped ongoing conversations or is that something you'll talk about later once they've sat back and looked at this period?
- 19:26I think it's something we talk about later.
- 19:27Obviously, we speak about the current situation, but...
- 19:31because of the way that there's so much to go through now and to focus on, I think all that future stuff will be talked about after the stint that I have is over.
- 19:43So, yeah, I don't know how important that conversation was to the decision that was made, but it was obviously pretty ironic that it happened on the morning
- 19:52of that day.
- 19:55So, yeah, I guess we'll just wait and see what happens.
- 19:58Invariably, a game like this is about acceptance as well from your peers.
- 20:01Have you had kind of little moments where Fernando Alonso or someone has come up and respected what you've done so far?
- 20:09Yes, for sure.
- 20:11I think that everyone's been pretty good about, I guess, supporting and, I guess, welcoming me into Formula 1 for now, which has been really, really cool.
- 20:22So, but obviously...
- 20:26At the same time, these guys who maybe when I was younger used to be heroes or who I used to look up to, now I want to be racing these guys and beating them.
- 20:38So...
- 20:40Yeah, I'm not too bothered about how they feel about me coming in.
- 20:42Cool, cool.
- 20:44It really doesn't, I guess in some respects, maybe you don't set a clear target for this, but what's the one thing, knowing how unsure we are, how long this will be, that you would like to ensure that you tick in the whole bid to show that you should be there on the grid?
- 21:03Is it points?
- 21:04I think it's probably points.
- 21:06Scoring points is definitely the target.
- 21:11But if it's not that, it's just basically, yeah, like I said, doing everything I could have done, maximizing this opportunity and looking back and knowing that I couldn't have done anything else.
- 21:20I think that's really the target.
- 21:22So if that's points, that's great.
- 21:24But if it's not, it's whatever that will be.
- 21:27Have you had, what's the reaction been like to all of this between media at home and all that?
- 21:32So suddenly the thing went from 2,000 RPM to 7.5 or something, did it?
- 21:36Yeah, it was crazy.
- 21:37It was absolutely crazy.
- 21:40And it's been amazing.
- 21:41The sport's been so, so cool.
- 21:44I literally haven't been able to get back to everybody, which is really, really cool.
- 21:48And yeah.
- 21:50It's obviously, you know, I haven't made it yet, but obviously it's a big step.
- 21:54And it's something a lot of people have followed this journey for a long time.
- 21:57So it's pretty cool to have this opportunity.
- 22:02And, yeah, I just apologize to people I haven't got back to yet.
- 22:06I will...
- 22:07Yeah, be doing what I can over the next couple of weeks to try and catch up.
- 22:10I'm sure they understand.
- 22:12Soak this moment up.
- 22:13Enjoy it with your folks while they're here this weekend.
- 22:16And something that dawned on me today, you're heading into this at the Singapore Grand Prix.
- 22:20At the very same time, Matt Payne is heading into the Sandown 500 with a very good team in supercars.
- 22:26Not bad for two young blokes that used to make car noises playing in sand dunes on the beach as little tackers, hey?
- 22:32It's funny you say that because I called him a week ago maybe, or two weeks ago, probably a week ago after Zambort, or just after Monza.
- 22:41And it's something we talked about.
- 22:43Obviously, he's really the reason I got into go-karting
- 22:49We were together in preschool and we used to, there was only two trikes that were like, looked like little race car things.
- 22:56So we would take these every single day and race each other.
- 22:59And then we went to primary school together.
- 23:01He started go karts.
- 23:02I went and watched him and then we grew up racing karts together and going to school together and basically both having this, this dream.
- 23:10So obviously he's, he's doing extremely well and, and yeah,
- 23:15As I said, I think when this is all done, something I'll look back more on, but it definitely is cool for both of us to be in this situation.
- 23:25Yeah, it's very cool.
- 23:26Awesome.
- 23:26Look where that has led.
