- 0:26Speaker 1: That's a good thing, right, I'm here at the end
- 0:28Speaker 1: of the week. Good afternoon, everybody.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Welcome to the.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Program here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone
- 0:36Speaker 1: and the iHeart Radio app where it's always My name
- 0:40Speaker 1: is Craig Way.
- 0:41Speaker 2: I do thank you for joining us.
- 0:42Speaker 1: As I always say, every Friday, Friday is your traditional
- 0:45Speaker 1: end of the week of the work week for Indian
- 0:48Speaker 1: and you have the weekend ahead of you.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Good on you, good for you.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Hope you enjoy it, Hope you get through the rest
- 0:52Speaker 1: of today all right.
- 0:53Speaker 2: And then enjoy the two days on the weekend.
- 0:56Speaker 1: There are those of you for whom Friday is the
- 1:00Speaker 1: middle part of the week. Our producer Jay Herman has
- 1:02Speaker 1: a friend who falls into that category. So it's you know,
- 1:05Speaker 1: Friday is just kind of like your Wednesday, that sort
- 1:08Speaker 1: of thing. So hopefully we can get you over the
- 1:09Speaker 1: hump to that. And for those of you for whom
- 1:11Speaker 1: Friday merely begins the work week, well I love you
- 1:16Speaker 1: and I'll we'll do our best to try to help
- 1:20Speaker 1: you through that through the Monday of your work week.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:23Speaker 4: We ought to congratulate those people on Tuesdays a little
- 1:25Speaker 4: more often.
- 1:26Speaker 1: You're right, You're right. I'm gonna start implementing that as well,
- 1:30Speaker 1: So we'll do that. So we've reached the end of
- 1:34Speaker 1: the work week, and we've also today reached the end
- 1:38Speaker 1: of two things that we've been doing pretty intensely here
- 1:42Speaker 1: of the past three weeks. One is our SEC football previews,
- 1:49Speaker 1: and we have visited with the play by play voice
- 1:52Speaker 1: of every SEC program coming up to today. There's sixteen
- 1:59Speaker 1: schools obviously in the Southeastern Conference. If you've removed Texas
- 2:03Speaker 1: from the equation and you zero in on the other
- 2:08Speaker 1: fifteen schools, we've done five previews per week. It started
- 2:14Speaker 1: off week before last. We began it way back on
- 2:18Speaker 1: I believe it was the seventh of August, and we
- 2:20Speaker 1: began with the defending conference champions, the Georgia Bulldogs. Jeff Dansler,
- 2:25Speaker 1: who will be their play by play voice for football
- 2:27Speaker 1: this year moving into that role, joined us on Monday.
- 2:30Speaker 1: On Tuesday, it was the Arkansas Razorbacks and we visited
- 2:36Speaker 1: with Chuck Barrett, their play by play voice. On Wednesday
- 2:39Speaker 1: of that first week, the Florida Gators were on deck.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Sean Kelly, who calls the action for the.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Gators, was with us.
- 2:45Speaker 1: On Thursday, it was Kentucky and Tom Leachs, the voice
- 2:49Speaker 1: of the Wildcats, was with us Big Blues play by
- 2:52Speaker 1: play voice, and then on Friday that first week, it
- 2:55Speaker 1: was Mississippi State and we visited with Neil Price, the
- 2:58Speaker 1: play by play voice the mississ State Bulldogs to get
- 3:01Speaker 1: a preview.
- 3:01Speaker 2: That was week one.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Week two began a week ago Monday with the South
- 3:05Speaker 1: Carolina game Cocks and their play by play voice, Todd Ellis.
- 3:08Speaker 1: On Tuesdays of Missouri Tigers, Mike Kelly, their broadcast voice,
- 3:12Speaker 1: joined us the voice of Missoo. On Wednesday, it was
- 3:15Speaker 1: another group of Tigers, lsu Chris Blair breaking it down
- 3:19Speaker 1: and talking about Lane Kiffin's first season to come in
- 3:23Speaker 1: baton Rouge. Thursday, we moved into the volunteer state. We
- 3:27Speaker 1: looked at Vanderbilt and visited with Andrew Alli Greta, the
- 3:29Speaker 1: Vanderbrook Commodore's play by play voice, and then on Friday
- 3:33Speaker 1: it was the Tennessee Volunteers and Mike Keith, their play
- 3:37Speaker 1: by play voice, joined us. And then we began this
- 3:39Speaker 1: final week of the previews on Monday with the Ole
- 3:41Speaker 1: miss Rebels. David Kellum with us their play by play
- 3:45Speaker 1: voice on Tuesday. Then after that was the Alabama Crimson tie.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Chris Stewart, the voice of the Tide, was with us.
- 3:52Speaker 1: On Wednesday. The other school from the Yellah Hammer State,
- 3:54Speaker 1: the Auburn Tigers, were on deck and we visited and
- 3:58Speaker 1: got the preview of Auburn with the Birchram, their play
- 4:00Speaker 1: by play voice. And then closing out our previews with
- 4:04Speaker 1: the two biggest rivals for Texas. Yesterday was Oklahoma Toby Roland,
- 4:09Speaker 1: the Sooner's play by play voice, and today we conclude
- 4:12Speaker 1: it with Texas A and M play by play voice
- 4:15Speaker 1: Andrew Monico.
- 4:16Speaker 2: We take a look at the Aggie.
- 4:17Speaker 1: So we've done that now for three weeks, and we'll
- 4:20Speaker 1: visit with Andrew Monico that's coming up in the four
- 4:23Speaker 1: o'clock hour. The other thing that we've been doing now
- 4:28Speaker 1: for and concluding a three week run is giving away
- 4:32Speaker 1: copies of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Event.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Just pull my copy of the magazine. I have a
- 4:39Speaker 1: little bit of a visual aid there. Jake's got his
- 4:41Speaker 1: out there and it helps to have it nearby for me.
- 4:45Speaker 1: So We've been giving away copies of the magazine for
- 4:49Speaker 1: three weeks, and this is the final day. We've been
- 4:52Speaker 1: giving away copies one per hour, three per show every
- 4:58Speaker 1: day two weeks ago, last week, week, and this week.
- 5:00Speaker 2: You know, it's the exhaustive.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Four hundred page preview of everything about college football and
- 5:07Speaker 1: high school football in the state of Texas. More than
- 5:10Speaker 1: fifteen hundred high schools previewed in here, and and more
- 5:15Speaker 1: than well, it was dozens of college because it includes
- 5:20Speaker 1: you know, not only Division one FBS Power for schools
- 5:25Speaker 1: like Texas and Texas A and M and the SEC
- 5:28Speaker 1: and Houston and SMU and Houston and TCU and Baylor
- 5:36Speaker 1: in the Big twelve and SMU and the accuse those
- 5:40Speaker 1: schools they.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Are in the Power four leagues.
- 5:43Speaker 1: And then and then obviously in the other FBS G
- 5:47Speaker 1: six leagues like UTSA and Texas State and North Texas
- 5:55Speaker 1: those those schools and UTEP all of all of the
- 5:59Speaker 1: schools that are Division one FBS, the FCS programs like.
- 6:02Speaker 2: In the Southland Conference like steven F.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Austin and some of the other ones, Sam Houston State
- 6:07Speaker 1: in Division one FBS and Conference USA, so all of
- 6:10Speaker 1: those and then Division two, Division three and even the
- 6:13Speaker 1: junior colleges. So that magazine does that. We've been giving
- 6:16Speaker 1: away copies of that magazine now for going on the
- 6:20Speaker 1: end of our third and final week, So we're gonna
- 6:22Speaker 1: give away three more copies today and I'm just gonna
- 6:24Speaker 1: make it as easy on you as possible. It would
- 6:26Speaker 1: be lucky to draw. We're gonna do this all today
- 6:30Speaker 1: with the random of draw. But the way that you
- 6:33Speaker 1: have a chance to help yourself out on that is by,
- 6:38Speaker 1: you know, using the iHeartRadio app there. You just download
- 6:42Speaker 1: that iHeart Radio app there on your smartphone. It's real
- 6:46Speaker 1: easy to do and it's free. So you do that,
- 6:49Speaker 1: and then once you download it, you do a search
- 6:52Speaker 1: for AM thirteen hundred the zone. It pops up right
- 6:55Speaker 1: away and you'll see two buttons. One's a little white
- 6:57Speaker 1: button and shaped like a triangle. That's to listen to
- 6:59Speaker 1: what's going on the air. There is another button, a
- 7:01Speaker 1: red one with a little white microphone. That one is
- 7:04Speaker 1: our talkback feature. And all you have to do is
- 7:06Speaker 1: tap that button and say I want the magazine. And
- 7:09Speaker 1: if you do that, and it happens to wind up
- 7:14Speaker 1: with you in the queue at the number we designate
- 7:18Speaker 1: each hour, then you win a copy of the magazine.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Our number one is going to be number ten, number ten,
- 7:28Speaker 1: So the tenth person in line, the tenth person in
- 7:32Speaker 1: the queue using the talkback feature on your smartphone, use
- 7:37Speaker 1: that talkback microphone there on the iHeartRadio app and say
- 7:39Speaker 1: I want the magazine. If you're the tenth person, you
- 7:43Speaker 1: will win a copy of.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 7:47Speaker 1: So we're going to do that, put that out there
- 7:49Speaker 1: for you right now for our number one.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Be the tenth person in line of that and you'll win.
- 7:54Speaker 1: We'll give away another one in the three o'clock hour,
- 7:57Speaker 1: and then one final copy we'll give away in four o'clock.
- 8:00Speaker 1: We've had a steady stream of people coming by to
- 8:02Speaker 1: pick up their magazines. I just saw one a few
- 8:04Speaker 1: minutes ago. We got other people coming by to pick
- 8:06Speaker 1: up their magazines. You know, if you win, you just
- 8:09Speaker 1: all you tubes come by the station and we've got
- 8:11Speaker 1: your name down and all this, and when you do
- 8:13Speaker 1: leave us your name. When you do that on the
- 8:16Speaker 1: talk back, make sure you leave us your name and
- 8:20Speaker 1: number so that we know how to contact you afterwards.
- 8:24Speaker 1: And if you're the winner, then you just come down
- 8:26Speaker 1: here to the iHeart Compound here hard by the Pennybacker
- 8:32Speaker 1: Bridge here and.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Lake Austin and pick up your copy.
- 8:39Speaker 4: And you're smart for waiting until two o'clock on a Friday,
- 8:42Speaker 4: because three sixty won't be nearly as backed up with
- 8:44Speaker 4: all the improvements going on around here.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Yeah, you don't want to mess with it in the morning,
- 8:49Speaker 1: and you don't want to mess with it after five o'clock.
- 8:51Speaker 4: You don't want to leave your Yeah, you don't want
- 8:53Speaker 4: to leave your place at four point thirty, hoping to
- 8:55Speaker 4: get here by.
- 8:56Speaker 5: The end of the show.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Yeah, Jake's actually fortunate he doesn't live that far away.
- 9:00Speaker 2: So as the crow flies, what a couple of miles?
- 9:02Speaker 4: Maybe a little less, it takes a couple of miles
- 9:05Speaker 4: to drive back because I've got to turn around.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Okay, So let's say you're leaving the building here at
- 9:10Speaker 1: five thirty in the afternoon, thirty minutes after we're off
- 9:12Speaker 1: the year. How long does it take you at five
- 9:16Speaker 1: thirty in the afternoon to drive home.
- 9:17Speaker 4: To get home Tuesday through Thursday? Twenty minutes, not bad.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Twenty minutes to less than two miles. The point being is,
- 9:27Speaker 1: it's like an hour ten for me an hour fifteen
- 9:29Speaker 1: to get up there to get to Georgetown.
- 9:31Speaker 2: But that's okay.
- 9:32Speaker 1: I love where I live, and you know, I'll listen
- 9:35Speaker 1: to Bucking BK on the drive home, or if I've
- 9:37Speaker 1: got a call then they have to make using my
- 9:39Speaker 1: hands free, I'll do that, you know that sort of thing.
- 9:43Speaker 1: So I understand the assignment. I know how that goes
- 9:46Speaker 1: on that. You know what else we're gonna do. We're
- 9:48Speaker 1: go to talks some baseball in the three o'clock hour.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Gene Watson, our MLB insider, joins us and Gino will
- 10:00Speaker 1: join us from as I mentioned last week, the Pacific
- 10:03Speaker 1: Rimy's in Tokyo, Japan, and he'll talk to us about that,
- 10:07Speaker 1: and we'll also ask him other Major League Baseball questions.
- 10:10Speaker 1: That's coming up in the three o'clock hour, which will,
- 10:12Speaker 1: by the way, be the five o'clock in the morning
- 10:16Speaker 1: hour for Gina. He'll be rising at like five to
- 10:21Speaker 1: a m or just before five am Tokyo time, and
- 10:25Speaker 1: we'll join us at what will be five point fifteen
- 10:29Speaker 1: in the morning his time, three fifteen our time this afternoon.
- 10:34Speaker 1: So we're going to visit with Gene Watson on that. Also,
- 10:37Speaker 1: we're going to keep you updated on Little League World Series,
- 10:39Speaker 1: the team from Bernie with all of the issues and
- 10:42Speaker 1: all of the controversy in that Little League regional there
- 10:47Speaker 1: in Waco, which he merged as the winner with Tulsa
- 10:49Speaker 1: having the ineligible players. There were a couple through residency
- 10:53Speaker 1: and one through age, so Bernie ended up winning the
- 10:57Speaker 1: one game winner take all playoff at the end of it,
- 11:01Speaker 1: beating the Louisiana team. So the team just northwest of
- 11:03Speaker 1: San Antonio, Bernie is playing its first game in the
- 11:08Speaker 1: Little League World Series and they're playing a team.
- 11:10Speaker 2: From Washington State. So that's that's coming up.
- 11:15Speaker 1: And and in fact Washington's gotten the early jump on
- 11:18Speaker 1: them due to an era in the outfield.
- 11:19Speaker 2: They've scored a couple of runs early.
- 11:21Speaker 4: There's already been some some drama today. Maybe we'll have
- 11:23Speaker 4: time to get to some of that. I know, curosow
- 11:26Speaker 4: no hit Japan. Yeah, that's right, that's right. Oh wait,
- 11:29Speaker 4: the Washington two runs was in their game last night.
- 11:32Speaker 4: They've already played a game. This is the Bernie team's
- 11:35Speaker 4: first game, so they're playing in the first inning right now.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Am I reading this right?
- 11:40Speaker 4: There were two no hitters today where they're really looks
- 11:43Speaker 4: like Iowa no hit California.
- 11:45Speaker 2: My friends when they were up one nothing and again.
- 11:48Speaker 5: My friends were following along.
- 11:49Speaker 4: They said the last pitch was way outside, but they
- 11:52Speaker 4: gave it to the hitter.
- 11:54Speaker 2: And rang it up, so there was for the no hitter. Okay.
- 11:56Speaker 1: So anyway, the Bernie team is playing the team from
- 11:59Speaker 1: Washington's date who has already played in won a game,
- 12:03Speaker 1: and the team from Bernie has not yet played a game,
- 12:06Speaker 1: but they've just gotten the lead off man.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Aboard in the first inning. So anyway, we'll keep you
- 12:11Speaker 2: updated on that, all right.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Coming up next, we're gonna shift to Texans and Cowboys
- 12:16Speaker 1: in NFL Conversation. We're gonna hear from Demiko Ryans in
- 12:21Speaker 1: the aftermath of the Texans loss to the Raiders last
- 12:24Speaker 1: night in the preseason contest, c J. Stroud got his
- 12:27Speaker 1: first work. There was a little bit of brief work
- 12:29Speaker 1: for the first team offense out on the field, So
- 12:31Speaker 1: we'll hear from Demiko Ryan's about that. Also, we'll hear
- 12:35Speaker 1: from Cowboys owner, president and general manager Jerry Jones. As
- 12:40Speaker 1: the Cowboys traveled to Phoenix today, they finished up their
- 12:44Speaker 1: California version of training camp in Oxnard, where Jerry likes
- 12:49Speaker 1: to say in Oxnard. So they're headed for Glendale, Arizona.
- 12:54Speaker 1: They'll play the Phoenix Cardinals tomorrow night. We'll hear from Jerry.
- 12:57Speaker 1: We'll also here from the quarterback. We'll hear from Dak
- 12:59Speaker 1: Prescott coming up in the next segment, and we'll hear
- 13:02Speaker 1: a little more from them in the three o'clock hour
- 13:03Speaker 1: and the four o'clock hour as well.
- 13:05Speaker 2: As Demigo Ryans.
- 13:08Speaker 1: And this is a Friday, we do have inconceivable, Jay Carman,
- 13:13Speaker 1: we know what Friday with inconceivable means.
- 13:15Speaker 5: Oh, we're not going anywhere near California.
- 13:17Speaker 4: No, No, complete opposite coast correct, the Sunshine State, the
- 13:22Speaker 4: most flaccid of the lower forty eight. We're gonna grab
- 13:25Speaker 4: some low hanging fruit Florida man.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Yeah, got some Florida man to tell you about. So
- 13:29Speaker 1: we'll do that and a couple other topics as well,
- 13:31Speaker 1: some stuff. If you've got an appetite, I'm not going
- 13:34Speaker 1: to ruin it for you. I think I'm gonna wet
- 13:36Speaker 1: your appetite. Because we have the winners in the state
- 13:40Speaker 1: fair food categories.
- 13:42Speaker 4: It's going to say not an appetite for Public's blueberries.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Oh no, no, no, no, stay away from those.
- 13:47Speaker 5: The frozen ones.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Yeah, it's not good, not good if you want to
- 13:50Speaker 1: stay healthy anyway, all right, it's all right. We always
- 13:54Speaker 1: also offer up our text line too if you'd like
- 13:57Speaker 1: to weigh in and the conversation on the text on.
- 13:59Speaker 1: All you have to do is tell the word Texas
- 14:01Speaker 1: follow by your question or comment to eight one five
- 14:04Speaker 1: three zero. So text the word Texas follow by your
- 14:07Speaker 1: questioner comment to eight one five three zero. Standard messaging
- 14:10Speaker 1: and data rates may apply, but be the tenth person
- 14:14Speaker 1: in the talkback queue to win a copy of Day
- 14:17Speaker 1: Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. We'll continue on sports Radio AM
- 14:20Speaker 1: thirteen under the Zone in the iHeartRadio appall Friday overall anyway,
- 14:30Speaker 1: Like I said, yes, if you're one of those people
- 14:32Speaker 1: from whom Friday meets with, what it means to.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Get a lot of folks what Friday does?
- 14:39Speaker 1: So yeah, it is a fire me up Friday.
- 14:43Speaker 2: So what's the artist that did that? Again?
- 14:46Speaker 5: This is the cure?
- 14:46Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right, that's right.
- 14:49Speaker 1: So yeah, Friday, I'm in love right or you're in
- 14:54Speaker 1: love with Fridays?
- 14:56Speaker 4: Tell you what last Friday without high school football and
- 14:59Speaker 4: other scrimmages whatnot.
- 15:00Speaker 2: That's true.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Have you been able to make it down for a
- 15:02Speaker 1: bass Drop scrimmage it since you're the bass Drop Bear?
- 15:05Speaker 5: I yeah, regretfully I have not.
- 15:07Speaker 4: So still have a lot to lord about the Bears
- 15:09Speaker 4: coming into what should be a fun season opener against
- 15:11Speaker 4: Montgomery Lake Creek.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Yeah, O Lions.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Somebody on the text line said, I want a magazine yesterday.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Whatlse he'll be able to pick it up on Monday. Yes, yes,
- 15:20Speaker 1: today's just the last day we're giving them away. But
- 15:24Speaker 1: for all of the people who've won them over these
- 15:28Speaker 1: you know, and they're going to win them, including today's
- 15:30Speaker 1: final day.
- 15:31Speaker 2: So that's like forty five people.
- 15:33Speaker 1: There stacks of them in the back for the winners,
- 15:36Speaker 1: and they're all labels that don't try to come in
- 15:38Speaker 1: and say, I'm so and so you're gonna to present
- 15:40Speaker 1: id huts.
- 15:42Speaker 5: Don't pull it. Don't pull a Starbucks from Inconceivable the
- 15:45Speaker 5: other day.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right.
- 15:48Speaker 1: But yes, if you won yesterday or one of the
- 15:52Speaker 1: if you haven't come by to pick up your copy,
- 15:54Speaker 1: it's still here with your name on it.
- 15:55Speaker 2: If you're a winner, and if you win today.
- 15:59Speaker 1: You can come by on Monday or sometime next week
- 16:02Speaker 1: if the day doesn't work for you, you can do that.
- 16:06Speaker 1: And you said there's still a little bit of space
- 16:09Speaker 1: left in the queue there for folks to reach.
- 16:12Speaker 5: Us as of a couple of minutes ago.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll see, all right, So still some hope for
- 16:17Speaker 1: you if you haven't already hopped in, or maybe you
- 16:19Speaker 1: did and thought I was too early, enter again. All
- 16:21Speaker 1: you have to do if you assuming you have the
- 16:25Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app downloaded, you just search AM thirteen under the zone.
- 16:30Speaker 1: It'll pop up red button, white microphone tap and say
- 16:33Speaker 1: I want the magazine. If you're the tenth person in line,
- 16:36Speaker 1: the tenth person in the queue, you will win a
- 16:39Speaker 1: copy of that magazine. So just wanted you to know
- 16:42Speaker 1: that we had a couple hadn't gotten to number ten
- 16:45Speaker 1: right when we pitched it to the break.
- 16:46Speaker 2: So anyway, that's where that is, all right.
- 16:51Speaker 1: And again, if you want to reach us on the
- 16:53Speaker 1: text line just to ask us a question about anything
- 16:55Speaker 1: or to visit, you can do that by texting the
- 16:58Speaker 1: word texas followed by your question comment to eight one
- 17:02Speaker 1: five three zero Standard Messaging and Data rates man A
- 17:05Speaker 1: black Okay, the Texans last night, last night's game, and
- 17:10Speaker 1: I watched a good chunk of it, Lynn and I
- 17:14Speaker 1: watched like the first quarter, went out and grabbed some dinner,
- 17:16Speaker 1: came back and watched some more of it afterwards. And
- 17:20Speaker 1: last night's Texans Raid Raiders game. And you tell me,
- 17:26Speaker 1: last night's Texans Raiders game was your classic NFL preseason game.
- 17:34Speaker 1: You get a couple of You get a couple of
- 17:38Speaker 1: series at most a little bit with some of your
- 17:41Speaker 1: regulars and.
- 17:42Speaker 2: Starters, and c J. Stroud got some brief work and
- 17:44Speaker 2: they some of that.
- 17:46Speaker 1: And your front line guys build a lead, and then
- 17:54Speaker 1: the bench players get out there and then the game
- 17:56Speaker 1: turns in the second half.
- 17:57Speaker 2: And that's what it turned with the Raiders, because Fernando.
- 17:59Speaker 1: Bandos actually looked pretty good other than the Wade would
- 18:04Speaker 1: ass picked six. And this morning on Sports Center, they
- 18:07Speaker 1: were talking about how Fernando Mendoza threw one pick six
- 18:13Speaker 1: his entire collegiate career.
- 18:16Speaker 2: It was last year at the Oregon in the Oregon
- 18:17Speaker 2: game in Indiana.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Came back and won the game anyway, but that's the
- 18:21Speaker 1: only pick six he threw it in his entire collegiate career. Fortunately,
- 18:25Speaker 1: because of the preseason. It doesn't count on your NFL
- 18:27Speaker 1: record just as a preseason pick. But anyway, the Texans
- 18:31Speaker 1: with the front line guys built the lead, Raiders came
- 18:33Speaker 1: back and won it late. So Demiko Ryans was asked
- 18:36Speaker 1: after the game, what were the things he liked about
- 18:38Speaker 1: the contest.
- 18:39Speaker 6: What I really liked tonight was we improved as a
- 18:42Speaker 6: team starting off with our offense the way they came
- 18:45Speaker 6: out opened the game, starting and drive, driving the ball
- 18:48Speaker 6: down to feel like we did. Thought the O line
- 18:49Speaker 6: blocked it really well. Wod He of course have some
- 18:52Speaker 6: nice runs, but credit to CJ too. He made some
- 18:55Speaker 6: really good decisions. Didn't throw it around a ton, but
- 18:58Speaker 6: when he did throw his good decisions with the football,
- 19:00Speaker 6: he moved us up and down the field. So I'm
- 19:03Speaker 6: proud of what those guys went out there and did. Defensively,
- 19:06Speaker 6: the first group did a really good job as well,
- 19:08Speaker 6: going out getting some stops. Wade came through with the
- 19:11Speaker 6: big play getting an interception for a touchdown. That's our mantra,
- 19:15Speaker 6: That's what we were built on, is attacking the football.
- 19:17Speaker 6: So when we do that puts us in a really
- 19:19Speaker 6: good position. So I saw a lot of improvements from
- 19:21Speaker 6: our team from week one to where we are now.
- 19:24Speaker 6: Definitely played our style of football, our brand of football.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Felt the more physical team.
- 19:28Speaker 6: I felt like guys played fast, felt like we played
- 19:31Speaker 6: with some confidence on offense. So I'm pleased with the
- 19:35Speaker 6: outing right what our guys did early on in the game.
- 19:38Speaker 6: Don't like the outcome of how it ended, most certainly
- 19:41Speaker 6: so our backup guys there got a lot to improve upon,
- 19:44Speaker 6: But that first half was really good half of football
- 19:48Speaker 6: for us as a team.
- 19:49Speaker 1: It is a lot easier as a head coach in
- 19:53Speaker 1: the NFL to have the preseason game like the Texans
- 19:58Speaker 1: had last night, where the first half front line guys
- 20:01Speaker 1: played well and then some of your backups perhaps not
- 20:04Speaker 1: so much and you wind up losing it. You'll take
- 20:06Speaker 1: that over the alternative virtually every time. So in that
- 20:11Speaker 1: first half, when they were building the lead, how would
- 20:15Speaker 1: you evaluate that first team offensive line performance and was
- 20:19Speaker 1: that more indicative of what he's seen in practice at.
- 20:21Speaker 6: The first offensive line group. As you guys know, I
- 20:23Speaker 6: talk about it constantly. We move guys around to make
- 20:26Speaker 6: sure we got our best five guys out there. So
- 20:28Speaker 6: to see that you got to see guys working together
- 20:30Speaker 6: to see guys getting those reps. So that's indicative of
- 20:33Speaker 6: the group you saw out there today. Those are the
- 20:35Speaker 6: five we went with today. Those guys have done a
- 20:37Speaker 6: really good job, so we'll see how they keep building
- 20:40Speaker 6: and moving forward.
- 20:41Speaker 1: All right, And he mentioned the rookie Wade would As
- 20:44Speaker 1: who picked off that pass. Mendoza was trying to go
- 20:48Speaker 1: to a receiver across the middle, kind of threw it
- 20:50Speaker 1: behind him a little bit, and the receiver also stopped
- 20:53Speaker 1: the route a little bit.
- 20:54Speaker 5: Classic that throw works in college.
- 20:57Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it did not work last night, and would
- 21:00Speaker 1: has picked it off and brought it back, and he goes,
- 21:03Speaker 1: that's what he thought.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Of that play.
- 21:04Speaker 6: For a way, he just has to be disciplined of
- 21:06Speaker 6: what we're asking him to do. Like that pick came
- 21:08Speaker 6: from him just being where he's supposed to be and
- 21:11Speaker 6: finding a way to catch the football and go score.
- 21:13Speaker 6: So he just has to continue to improve. Rookie, we're
- 21:16Speaker 6: trying to get him a ton of reps, and he's
- 21:18Speaker 6: done a good job what we've given him.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Okay, all right, So two games down for the Texans,
- 21:24Speaker 1: won and the win column one in the lost column.
- 21:25Speaker 1: But more about just continuing to try to get better
- 21:29Speaker 1: for this football team now. The Cowboys, unlike the Texans
- 21:33Speaker 1: who were playing two home preseason games before concluding the
- 21:37Speaker 1: preseason on the road next week, the Cowboys it's too
- 21:41Speaker 1: road preseason games. The win at Seattle last Saturday night,
- 21:46Speaker 1: and then coming up tomorrow night they were in Arizona.
- 21:49Speaker 2: They wins Arizona. Today.
- 21:51Speaker 1: They wrapped up the California portion of training camp yesterday
- 21:57Speaker 1: in Oxtarn, California. Jerry Jones, they requested some con the
- 22:02Speaker 1: media requested an opportunity to visit with Jerry. Of course,
- 22:06Speaker 1: Jerry rarely turns down the opportunity to visit with the media,
- 22:08Speaker 1: but they requested that because they've wanted to get his thoughts. Also,
- 22:12Speaker 1: in the word that came down from the NFL yesterday
- 22:14Speaker 1: that five hundred thousand dollars fine of the Cowboys and
- 22:18Speaker 1: Saints both accrued for the dust up they had and
- 22:22Speaker 1: the fights and the guy slinging a helmet and fisticuffs
- 22:25Speaker 1: and all that kind of stuff. So Jerry was asked
- 22:27Speaker 1: what did he think about those finds handed out to
- 22:30Speaker 1: the Cowboys and Saints.
- 22:31Speaker 7: Strong opinion in the league to when we have these
- 22:38Speaker 7: joint practices, everybody's aware of the competition, both individually as
- 22:44Speaker 7: well as through the team. We understand that you don't
- 22:47Speaker 7: have the discipline of penalties that are real difference makers
- 22:51Speaker 7: out here, and frankly you probably don't have the officiating.
- 22:57Speaker 2: Consequences.
- 23:00Speaker 7: So uh uh, this game is physical and it's easy
- 23:04Speaker 7: to get involved with aggressive temperaments. All of that makes
- 23:11Speaker 7: it a real focal point of the league to stay
- 23:16Speaker 7: within good sport and the taking of helmets off and
- 23:23Speaker 7: swinging and hitting and that type of thing is not
- 23:27Speaker 7: good for anybody, and it's certainly not what we want
- 23:29Speaker 7: represent to our fans and as a league or as
- 23:33Speaker 7: a team. And so it's understandable how they're coming down
- 23:38Speaker 7: with a real severe fines.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Uh.
- 23:40Speaker 1: The key words there that Jerry used were aggressive temperaments
- 23:46Speaker 1: and the Cowboys had those, so yeah, aggressive finds. Does
- 23:49Speaker 1: he plan to appeal.
- 23:50Speaker 2: It, Yes, we will appeal.
- 23:52Speaker 7: And that's pretty harsh, I mean pretty stiff, not harsh,
- 23:55Speaker 7: but stiff. But it does make the point that it's
- 23:59Speaker 7: are matter and uh, it starts with everybody at all
- 24:06Speaker 7: levels of a club too, and the clubs in this
- 24:09Speaker 7: case we're doing practice together. It really emphasizes the league's
- 24:13Speaker 7: intent to control it from the very top, which when
- 24:18Speaker 7: they start dealing out those kinds of fines, they get
- 24:20Speaker 7: your attention.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Okay, all right, uh and then let's hear from the quarterback.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Dak Prescott was asked, you know, since they were wrapping
- 24:28Speaker 1: up the California portion of training camp, what was overall
- 24:32Speaker 1: impressions of ala team worked throughout the Oxnard portion of
- 24:36Speaker 1: training camp?
- 24:37Speaker 2: Good?
- 24:37Speaker 8: I mean I almost want to say great. Uh, I mean,
- 24:39Speaker 8: it's been a successful camp.
- 24:41Speaker 2: You know, you can't hang your.
- 24:42Speaker 8: Hat on everything we did is exactly what we're gonna do.
- 24:44Speaker 8: We're gonna move forward and this is you know, the
- 24:46Speaker 8: team and we don't need to get any better because that's.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Absolutely not true.
- 24:49Speaker 8: And hell have we still got two more weeks of
- 24:51Speaker 8: training camp, So I would say it's successful start to
- 24:55Speaker 8: training camp right where we need to be in the
- 24:57Speaker 8: sense of growing. Had a great practice out there today,
- 25:01Speaker 8: you know, no fans, just creating the energy ourselves and
- 25:05Speaker 8: still was I mean, you were out there, still is
- 25:07Speaker 8: getting chippy guys or fire. You guys are ready to
- 25:09Speaker 8: play somebody else. But more important than that, they're enjoying
- 25:12Speaker 8: football and they're enjoying the passion and everything that comes
- 25:14Speaker 8: with it and taking pride in their jobs. And when
- 25:16Speaker 8: you do that, you're going to see practice like that.
- 25:18Speaker 8: And so it's been fun. I'm proud of obviously all
- 25:22Speaker 8: the guys away they approached camp, the mentality of it
- 25:25Speaker 8: just and then the fact that the simple fact of
- 25:27Speaker 8: each unit is just trying to make the other unit better.
- 25:30Speaker 2: Was taking a huge amount of pride in.
- 25:32Speaker 8: Their job and and thinking that they're going to be
- 25:35Speaker 8: the best unit.
- 25:36Speaker 2: You know.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Dak said, there wasn't everything to hang your hat on.
- 25:39Speaker 1: Looking at the picture that Jake has posted up here,
- 25:41Speaker 1: there's a lot of things you can hang on.
- 25:43Speaker 5: Dax's it's got a bucket hat on there.
- 25:45Speaker 2: Man, that is big time there. Uh.
- 25:48Speaker 1: He was asked about that the joint practice with the
- 25:51Speaker 1: Saints and you know how it got really chippy, feisty.
- 25:55Speaker 2: What was his impressions of it overall?
- 25:58Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean they're just ready to play football, and
- 25:59Speaker 8: you know, we got a lot of guys that have
- 26:01Speaker 8: a lot to prove, you know, on a team that
- 26:04Speaker 8: feels like we've got a lot to prove. And so
- 26:05Speaker 8: I think when you've got that, emotions are going to
- 26:08Speaker 8: be high. The passion is gonna you know, gonna show.
- 26:12Speaker 8: But at the end of the day, you got to
- 26:13Speaker 8: you gotta live on the edge, and I go over
- 26:14Speaker 8: the edge. And so we can be physical, we can
- 26:17Speaker 8: be passionate, we can be aggressive, but it all has
- 26:20Speaker 8: to be led from a discipline standpoint. So I know
- 26:22Speaker 8: that's what Shots spoke a lot about after the Saints practice,
- 26:26Speaker 8: and you know, we're able to go into the film
- 26:27Speaker 8: and see exactly why that practice ended like it did
- 26:30Speaker 8: and went the way that it did. And then even
- 26:32Speaker 8: out there today, there's just moments right that you've got
- 26:35Speaker 8: to make sure you're making the more disciplined decision while
- 26:37Speaker 8: still being aggressive or playing on the edge without crossing it.
- 26:40Speaker 1: With all of that in mind, now and now leaving
- 26:43Speaker 1: California with regard to the training camp, with that being
- 26:46Speaker 1: the case, does he feel a little more emboldened about
- 26:50Speaker 1: his Super Bowl prognostication and expectation for this football team.
- 26:55Speaker 8: I mean, I feel great about the steps that we made,
- 26:58Speaker 8: what we came in a training camp here in ox
- 27:00Speaker 8: and Art to accomplish. Like I said, we still got
- 27:03Speaker 8: two weeks left to go. So nothing is said, nothing
- 27:06Speaker 8: is yeah, you can't win. You can't win. In August Unfortunately,
- 27:11Speaker 8: you can't win in September, but we're taking the steps
- 27:14Speaker 8: necessary to put ourselves in the best position come week
- 27:17Speaker 8: one and gives ourselves the best position to win that game.
- 27:19Speaker 8: And it starts there, and then once you do that,
- 27:21Speaker 8: you can move forward. But at the end of the day,
- 27:23Speaker 8: it's about getting better each and every day in some aspect,
- 27:26Speaker 8: and I think this team has had that mentality, and
- 27:28Speaker 8: I think we've accomplished that the days that we've come
- 27:30Speaker 8: out here.
- 27:30Speaker 1: All right, Cowboys and Cardinals tomorrow night from Arizona.
- 27:35Speaker 2: And then.
- 27:37Speaker 1: Excuse me while I just sneezed. Yeah, yeah, I cut
- 27:41Speaker 1: off my microphone. Otherwise it would have just probably would
- 27:44Speaker 1: have blown your ear drums to hear that. By the way,
- 27:46Speaker 1: I heard a guy last night. He was in one
- 27:48Speaker 1: of the yards that neighbors backs up to my yard
- 27:52Speaker 1: because like in a lot of neighborhoods, you have a
- 27:54Speaker 1: neighbor on each side of you. In many cases you
- 27:57Speaker 1: might have a neighbor or across your back fence. I
- 28:00Speaker 1: have that in the neighborhood. I live with nice people
- 28:03Speaker 1: in the neighborhood.
- 28:04Speaker 2: I live it.
- 28:05Speaker 1: One guy last I was outside in the backyard with
- 28:07Speaker 1: the dog because like I said, every now and then
- 28:09Speaker 1: we have a little ball session and we'll throw the
- 28:11Speaker 1: tennis ball and she'll run and chasing. And while I
- 28:13Speaker 1: was doing that, one of the neighbors in one of
- 28:17Speaker 1: those three yards let fly with a sneeze that would
- 28:23Speaker 1: wake the dead. I mean, this is like, like I said,
- 28:26Speaker 1: it's beyond a fence on and I wasn't sure which
- 28:29Speaker 1: direction came from, but it was beyond a fence and
- 28:31Speaker 1: it was like rud and I was like, oh my gosh,
- 28:35Speaker 1: somebody die. You know, it was something like that. Anyway
- 28:38Speaker 1: it was.
- 28:38Speaker 2: It was.
- 28:39Speaker 1: It was quite an aggressive expiratory emotion that happened. And
- 28:46Speaker 1: the emote, the perspiring arts and the expiratory arts, that's
- 28:50Speaker 1: exactly what that is.
- 28:51Speaker 5: You allowed sneezer. Uh, that last song was pretty quiet.
- 28:54Speaker 4: I mean it would have been loud because it was
- 28:55Speaker 4: right next to the mic, but allowed for the listeners.
- 28:57Speaker 5: But it wasn't allowed sneeze.
- 28:58Speaker 2: Usually I can catch it in time to word and
- 29:00Speaker 2: blow the doors off.
- 29:01Speaker 1: But I yeah, I can. I can be a window rattler.
- 29:05Speaker 1: On occasion. It happened.
- 29:06Speaker 2: Cough.
- 29:06Speaker 5: Button's there for a reason.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt about it all. Right.
- 29:09Speaker 1: Up next is Inconceivable, including the adventures of Florida Man.
- 29:15Speaker 1: We'll get to that when we continue on sports Radio
- 29:17Speaker 1: AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app. Second
- 29:32Speaker 1: hour of the program here on sports Radio AM thirteen
- 29:35Speaker 1: under the zone Glad to have you with us on
- 29:37Speaker 1: a Friday afternoon. Craig Way joined by the producer Jake Hermon,
- 29:42Speaker 1: We're with you up until five o'clock.
- 29:46Speaker 2: Had another sneeze just now.
- 29:47Speaker 5: What's going on?
- 29:48Speaker 1: I don't know because normally I have allergies, but they
- 29:51Speaker 1: normally don't even come near me in the summertime, especially
- 29:54Speaker 1: as hot as it is. I'm allergic to cedar pollen,
- 29:58Speaker 1: but that's really only a factor there in the winter time,
- 30:05Speaker 1: in the dead of winter, and then also some uh
- 30:09Speaker 1: in uh in early spring as well, so that's usually
- 30:15Speaker 1: about the only time that I really have a problem
- 30:18Speaker 1: with that. But but clearly uh, whatever it is, it's
- 30:22Speaker 1: gotten up my nostrils a little bit, so it's it
- 30:27Speaker 1: can be a be a little bit of a problem there.
- 30:30Speaker 1: So I, as Jake said last hour, fortunately having the
- 30:36Speaker 1: talk the uh cough button, which I just hip right there,
- 30:44Speaker 1: helps because it kills off the microphone while I can
- 30:47Speaker 1: go ahead and call for sneeze or you know, it's
- 30:51Speaker 1: radio people. Sometimes we can be you know, a little
- 30:56Speaker 1: bit coarse, some in their language on the air or
- 30:59Speaker 1: their approach on the air. Others of us just you know,
- 31:03Speaker 1: when you reach a certain age, maybe you might have
- 31:07Speaker 1: emissions from your body that would make noise. You might
- 31:13Speaker 1: have some of that. So because of that, you know
- 31:19Speaker 1: it's a belt or a burp. Heaven forbid, it should
- 31:23Speaker 1: be something else. But you know, at least you have
- 31:27Speaker 1: the the call button, which really helps Little League World Series.
- 31:32Speaker 1: As I mentioned, the team from Bernie is playing the
- 31:36Speaker 1: team from Washington State, which had already played a game
- 31:42Speaker 1: in one yesterday. I think they beat a team from
- 31:46Speaker 1: Nevada yesterday. Today Iowa be California today with a no
- 31:51Speaker 1: hit or involved. So Washington was playing Washington State playing
- 31:56Speaker 1: a team from Bernie, just northwest of San Antonio.
- 31:58Speaker 2: That was the team that had.
- 31:59Speaker 1: All the controversy and everything surrounding. They're winning that Southwest
- 32:04Speaker 1: region and moving up to Williamsport, Pennsylvania. They were certified
- 32:08Speaker 1: as the winner by the Little League. And then of
- 32:11Speaker 1: course the team from Tulsa, the Tulsa National Team got
- 32:14Speaker 1: a temporary restraining order where they were gonna have to
- 32:16Speaker 1: play one more time, and then another judge overruled that
- 32:21Speaker 1: and so nullified that tro and so Bernie was allowed
- 32:26Speaker 1: to go ahead in advance up to Williamsport to play.
- 32:29Speaker 1: So they're playing this washingt team which had already played
- 32:31Speaker 1: the game, and the Washington State team jumped out to
- 32:33Speaker 1: a two to nothing lead two runs in the top
- 32:36Speaker 1: of the first. The Bernie team scored one run in
- 32:38Speaker 1: the first and one in the second to tiet but
- 32:41Speaker 1: Washington already with a threat on the top of the third.
- 32:43Speaker 1: They have two on with nobody out on that and
- 32:45Speaker 1: they've had a pitching change coming up in that one,
- 32:48Speaker 1: so we'll see how all that goes now. Jake was
- 32:52Speaker 1: just out stepped out for a moment. We had a
- 32:53Speaker 1: couple more people come in from magazines.
- 32:55Speaker 5: Two winners, two more magazines claimed.
- 32:58Speaker 1: Okay, So, like we said, a lot of folks are coming
- 33:01Speaker 1: by to pick up those copies of Dave Campbell's Texas
- 33:04Speaker 1: Football Max. And we have two copies remaining to give away,
- 33:09Speaker 1: two copies left and uh and we'll do them both
- 33:15Speaker 1: like we did the first hour, doing them all random
- 33:17Speaker 1: today on this final.
- 33:19Speaker 2: Day to give you a shot to do it.
- 33:21Speaker 1: And the winner that we had last hour, what was
- 33:26Speaker 1: his name the winter that we had Trent.
- 33:27Speaker 2: Yeah, Trent.
- 33:30Speaker 1: Managed to get into the queue after we had said
- 33:34Speaker 1: we didn't have all the way up to ten entries
- 33:37Speaker 1: yet because I mentioned it, we came out of the
- 33:39Speaker 1: break we were close, but we hadn't got there yet,
- 33:41Speaker 1: and said, hey, you need a couple more boom he
- 33:44Speaker 1: hopped right in and Trent got his. So it's important
- 33:49Speaker 1: to keep that in mind now this next hour, I
- 33:51Speaker 1: can tell you in advance, you're gonna want to be trick.
- 33:54Speaker 1: You're gonna want to be quick on the trigger to
- 33:57Speaker 1: do it to get into the queue. And I'll just
- 33:59Speaker 1: say that much. In a few minutes, I'll tell you
- 34:01Speaker 1: how you can get a copy of that. Coming up
- 34:03Speaker 1: in a few minutes. Also will visit with Jeene Watson
- 34:06Speaker 1: live from Tokyo as he'll join us to talk Major
- 34:12Speaker 1: League Baseball. We'll talk to Pennant Races, the wild card races.
- 34:15Speaker 1: There's some huge series this week and with the Braves
- 34:17Speaker 1: and Brewers are playing a great pitching matchup tonight, right.
- 34:21Speaker 4: Jacob Miselawski facing a guy that he's called his childhood
- 34:25Speaker 4: pitching idol in Chris Sale. That is must CTV if
- 34:28Speaker 4: you're a baseball fan, but especially a fan of great pitching.
- 34:32Speaker 4: And yeah, I mean it feels like every American League
- 34:34Speaker 4: West series is great. You got Kate Anderson making his
- 34:36Speaker 4: debut this weekend for Seattle.
- 34:38Speaker 5: Yep, so looking forward to all that.
- 34:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Yeah, So anyway, those that will visit with Gino and
- 34:45Speaker 1: talk about that on the other things. Okay, the Long
- 34:49Speaker 1: Worn football team has a scrimmage coming up tomorrow and
- 34:56Speaker 1: it's really kind of the most involved camp scrimmage they
- 35:03Speaker 1: had won. And they had to hold some players out,
- 35:05Speaker 1: some by precaution, some due to health because they had
- 35:08Speaker 1: a little flu bug kind of sweep through the team.
- 35:10Speaker 1: I think they've all cleared it, or mainly just about
- 35:14Speaker 1: all have cleared that, so they should be able to have.
- 35:17Speaker 2: All hands on deck for that scrimmage.
- 35:21Speaker 1: Now, the scrimmage they had last Saturday, some of the
- 35:24Speaker 1: mainline guys saw very little action in that, Arch Manning
- 35:29Speaker 1: being one of those guys. Also, Cam Coleman, the transfer
- 35:34Speaker 1: wide receiver, the much ballyhooed pre season All American wide receiver,
- 35:41Speaker 1: the transfer from Auburn, didn't get an awful lot of action.
- 35:45Speaker 1: A lot of the front line guys did not in
- 35:48Speaker 1: that they got some but not a lot, and so
- 35:51Speaker 1: Coleman was able to get some more. There will almost
- 35:54Speaker 1: certainly be more work for those guys tomorrow. It's you
- 36:02Speaker 1: got one last full on scrimmage because next week the
- 36:06Speaker 1: final full week of practice before they get to game week.
- 36:11Speaker 1: The week will conclude with what they call the mock game.
- 36:14Speaker 1: It's kind of a dress rehearsal, but it's more for
- 36:16Speaker 1: timing and walking out and the introduction on the field
- 36:20Speaker 1: and the PA stuff, all that stuff for their clocks
- 36:24Speaker 1: to be in order to get ready for a start
- 36:28Speaker 1: of the season, which of course would be the following
- 36:30Speaker 1: Saturday on the fifth, and that contest will be against
- 36:36Speaker 1: Texas State. It's fifteen days to kick off. Today, I
- 36:39Speaker 1: noticed our man cb on X likes to, you know,
- 36:45Speaker 1: mark each day with a different longhorn or long horns, and.
- 36:50Speaker 2: He picked two for today one.
- 36:54Speaker 1: I thought it was really really good to hit the
- 36:55Speaker 1: pick because people might not have that big recollection and
- 37:02Speaker 1: memory of Bill Norton when he played at Texas. He
- 37:04Speaker 1: was an Arizona transfer coming in, but Norton was a
- 37:07Speaker 1: big dude on that defensive front, and he made the
- 37:13Speaker 1: goal line stop against Clemson when Clemson was trying to
- 37:16Speaker 1: drive in that playoff game here in Austin back in
- 37:22Speaker 1: twenty twenty four, and on fourth down, Bill Norton.
- 37:26Speaker 2: Made a great tackle and that was that. On that.
- 37:29Speaker 1: The other one that I think would probably be more
- 37:31Speaker 1: celebrated and more remembered by long art fans is Hunter
- 37:35Speaker 1: Lawrence and Texas of course was playing Nebraska in the
- 37:39Speaker 1: Big twelve championship game. And remember the long runs had
- 37:41Speaker 1: a really difficult time in that game, and it was
- 37:46Speaker 1: it was in Dominican Sue just had a night and
- 37:50Speaker 1: was just kind of slinging Colt McCoy around like a
- 37:52Speaker 1: rag doll for a lot of it. Texas Howard fought
- 37:55Speaker 1: back and had that one final drive down the field
- 37:59Speaker 1: and had the pass that McCoy threw and overthrew. He
- 38:03Speaker 1: had to scramble out and time was running out and
- 38:05Speaker 1: it skipped out of bounds.
- 38:08Speaker 2: The clock showed zero.
- 38:09Speaker 1: Nebraska players came running on the field thinking they'd won
- 38:11Speaker 1: the ball game twelve ten. I could tell, however, when
- 38:15Speaker 1: it skipped, even when I looked that the clock was
- 38:17Speaker 1: moving from one second to zero, but it had not
- 38:20Speaker 1: reached zero, and sure enough they reviewed it.
- 38:24Speaker 2: And I found out from.
- 38:26Speaker 1: Visiting with one of the guys who was in the
- 38:29Speaker 1: booth with the clock operator, a guy that a former
- 38:35Speaker 1: official that I'd known, And I said, boy, that was
- 38:38Speaker 1: something you said. You want to take a guess at
- 38:40Speaker 1: how much time was left on the clock when that
- 38:43Speaker 1: ball skipped out of bounds.
- 38:45Speaker 2: I said half a second.
- 38:46Speaker 1: He said, well, in that control room it gets down
- 38:50Speaker 1: to thousands of seconds, and the time remaining was zero
- 38:56Speaker 1: point three nine seconds three almost four tenths of a
- 39:02Speaker 1: second left.
- 39:03Speaker 5: Could they they don't round down?
- 39:05Speaker 1: Yeah, and and you know I said, hey, in college basketball,
- 39:08Speaker 1: that's that's enough to get a shot away off an
- 39:10Speaker 1: inbounds pass. So it went out of bounds and with
- 39:14Speaker 1: zero point thirty nine left, so they put one second
- 39:17Speaker 1: back on the clock. And Hunter Lawrence we were just
- 39:19Speaker 1: talking about Bernie, you know, playing in this little world series.
- 39:23Speaker 1: Hunter Lawrence was from Bernie, out of Bernie High. And
- 39:25Speaker 1: he would have the big kick, the hold forty six
- 39:28Speaker 1: yard field.
- 39:29Speaker 2: On time's gone. But Texas a little ones have one the.
- 39:36Speaker 3: Big ten tenpion shift hunters sent as.
- 39:41Speaker 1: He took Pasadena forty six yard field goal. Texas wonted
- 39:45Speaker 1: thirteen to twelve, and then went on, of course, to Pasadena,
- 39:48Speaker 1: and that's when Cole McCoy got hurt against Alabama, and
- 39:51Speaker 1: there was all of that kind of stuff.
- 39:52Speaker 2: So anyway, all right.
- 39:54Speaker 1: We need a break, uh and when we come back,
- 39:58Speaker 1: we'll talk some baseball, which Ian Watson and he'll join
- 40:01Speaker 1: us live from Tokyo. We do want to give away
- 40:03Speaker 1: another copy of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine. Be quick
- 40:06Speaker 1: on the draw on the iHeartRadio app, number two, number
- 40:11Speaker 1: two in the queue. Be the second person to reach
- 40:13Speaker 1: us on the talkback microphone on the iHeartRadio app, and
- 40:17Speaker 1: you'll win a copy of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine
- 40:20Speaker 1: from AM thirteen hundred the Zono. Okay, it is three
- 40:26Speaker 1: eighteen pm Central time.
- 40:32Speaker 2: Here in Austin, Texas.
- 40:35Speaker 1: It is five eighteen am local time. I do believe
- 40:41Speaker 1: in Tokyo, Japan, and that is where we find our
- 40:43Speaker 1: good friend, our colleague, our MLB insider from the Chicago
- 40:48Speaker 1: White Sox front office, Gene Watson. I guess I should
- 40:50Speaker 1: say good morning, kanishiwa all of those kinds of things
- 40:53Speaker 1: as you join us I do appreciate you getting up
- 40:58Speaker 1: before what's it with My wife's mom used to say,
- 41:04Speaker 1: you're getting up before God gets up or something like
- 41:06Speaker 1: that is what she used to say off of that.
- 41:08Speaker 2: So anyway, I appreciate that. How are you today?
- 41:12Speaker 3: Everything's good, man, This sleep stuff is real over here.
- 41:15Speaker 3: It has been six days and you're literally I was
- 41:19Speaker 3: telling Chris Gets, our general manager, about ten minutes ago,
- 41:24Speaker 3: this is the closest thing to high school to days
- 41:26Speaker 3: for those that remember high school. Two days that I
- 41:28Speaker 3: can ever remember. If you wake up, you go to practice,
- 41:31Speaker 3: you go back and you sleep, and then you go
- 41:33Speaker 3: back to the field and then you sleep, and that's
- 41:35Speaker 3: that's all it's really been for six days. But what
- 41:38Speaker 3: a what an incredible place. Yeah, I want you to
- 41:42Speaker 3: the thrill of my lifetime. I want you to describe this.
- 41:45Speaker 1: Tell folks what it is that that why you're in Tokyo,
- 41:52Speaker 1: and and and then I've got some follow up questions
- 41:55Speaker 1: with regard to that, But first of all, let's start
- 41:57Speaker 1: with the why. And you in the group from the
- 42:01Speaker 1: White Sox front officer out there in Japan, Yeah, we're
- 42:05Speaker 1: really feeding off a lot of momentum from signing unim
- 42:08Speaker 1: or A Taki last winter, and obviously what he's been
- 42:11Speaker 1: to our organization and our team, and and and very
- 42:14Speaker 1: quickly the Chicago I Talks have become a presence here
- 42:18Speaker 1: in Japan, and really for the first few days we
- 42:22Speaker 1: had what would be considered Japan's ESPN and and probably
- 42:28Speaker 1: even bigger following us, you know, to lunches to the ballpark,
- 42:32Speaker 1: to our interactions with with members of organizations from Japan,
- 42:39Speaker 1: and so that that's been a really cool part of
- 42:41Speaker 1: the trip, is to be able to dive into the
- 42:43Speaker 1: culture and the rituals and and truly how respectful everybody
- 42:48Speaker 1: is here not only for each other, but but for
- 42:51Speaker 1: the game of baseball.
- 42:52Speaker 2: And so we've been doing kind of a fellowship.
- 42:55Speaker 3: Trip and also scouting league and obviously with Muni, you know,
- 43:01Speaker 3: impacting our organization the way he has this year, you know,
- 43:04Speaker 3: we're looking to double down on that. And the MPB
- 43:07Speaker 3: is a tremendous league. There are some stars here. Soto,
- 43:12Speaker 3: the third baseman is going to be coming over and
- 43:15Speaker 3: he is just going to be a superstar at the
- 43:18Speaker 3: major league level. Sato, and so, you know, it's been
- 43:22Speaker 3: it's been a lot of different things that have brought
- 43:24Speaker 3: us here, but it's been an unbelievable trip. I got
- 43:26Speaker 3: my first ride on a bullet train last night, one
- 43:29Speaker 3: hundred and ninety nine miles an hour, which was crazy.
- 43:32Speaker 3: He's like riding a ride at six Flags. But it's
- 43:35Speaker 3: been an incredible trip so far.
- 43:37Speaker 1: I'm almost getting this this vibe. And you tell me
- 43:40Speaker 1: if there's any truth to this. Since you said you've
- 43:43Speaker 1: got a big Japanese sports slash news agency that had
- 43:47Speaker 1: been following you guys around, did you have to deal with.
- 43:54Speaker 2: Use an interpreter?
- 43:56Speaker 1: I'm almost gathering the reverse of when I've as much
- 43:59Speaker 1: Dodgers as I've seeing shoe a Otani with his interpreter,
- 44:03Speaker 1: will Ireton having a trends like did you have an
- 44:06Speaker 1: interpreter with you?
- 44:07Speaker 3: We did, and literally, you know, we're at this lunch,
- 44:12Speaker 3: you know, down the stairs into this kind of really dark,
- 44:14Speaker 3: cavernous room.
- 44:15Speaker 2: It was an Italian restaurant.
- 44:16Speaker 3: It was it was amazing, But yeah, we had an
- 44:19Speaker 3: interpreter that would ask questions. And really one of the
- 44:22Speaker 3: questions asked of me was which which I found to
- 44:26Speaker 3: be a trip down you know, memory lane, was you know,
- 44:30Speaker 3: what what involvement have you had with Japanese baseball in
- 44:32Speaker 3: the past, and my first assignment ever in scouting was
- 44:37Speaker 3: the Hideki Rabu deal with the San Diego Padres and
- 44:40Speaker 3: the New York Yankees. I was covering the New York
- 44:41Speaker 3: Yankee spring training and that was in nineteen ninety seven.
- 44:44Speaker 2: I remember it like it was yesterday. And then you moved.
- 44:49Speaker 3: The part twenty fourteen American League Championship team in Kansas City,
- 44:53Speaker 3: and then they were super excited to hear about my
- 44:55Speaker 3: relation retionship with Shoeotani from the twenty twenty one season
- 44:59Speaker 3: and obviously Muni in this year and what he's done
- 45:02Speaker 3: in Chicago. So to be able to chronologically walk them
- 45:05Speaker 3: through that timeline of great Japanese players was a really
- 45:08Speaker 3: fun thing to do.
- 45:09Speaker 1: You know, It's funny when you mentioned Adeki Rabu. All
- 45:12Speaker 1: I can remember conjuring up in my mind is the
- 45:15Speaker 1: late great Harry Carey. You know, on script, here's Deki
- 45:19Speaker 1: Iraba Ira boo rob. I just remember him trying to
- 45:23Speaker 1: pronounce Adaki Rabu's name. And then there's another thing I
- 45:27Speaker 1: want everybody to hear. This is something that Gene sent
- 45:31Speaker 1: to me, uh last night and before I play it,
- 45:34Speaker 1: uh when I remarked that it sounded like a college
- 45:37Speaker 1: football game. This is this is like a normal thing, Geno.
- 45:40Speaker 1: At a baseball game. The fan interaction with the music
- 45:43Speaker 1: and the singing is that what this is.
- 45:46Speaker 2: Very much so.
- 45:47Speaker 3: And every player here, you know, in the United States,
- 45:51Speaker 3: you have your walk up and that's the same here.
- 45:54Speaker 3: But every player here during the app bat has a song.
- 45:57Speaker 3: And so these fans with with drum and horns literally
- 46:02Speaker 3: create a song for each player as they walk up,
- 46:05Speaker 3: and they sing the song the entire time of the
- 46:07Speaker 3: at bat, almost like a cheer to get behind the hitter.
- 46:11Speaker 3: And so in the top of the first you'll have
- 46:13Speaker 3: the visiting teams fans singing their songs for their players,
- 46:17Speaker 3: and in the bottom of the first you'll have the
- 46:19Speaker 3: home team song singing the song for their players. And
- 46:24Speaker 3: we went to Sabu last night in the it was
- 46:27Speaker 3: a night game. The fans were it was incredible to
- 46:30Speaker 3: the scene.
- 46:31Speaker 2: Wow, what they have here.
- 46:33Speaker 1: I want folks to listen to this and tell me
- 46:35Speaker 1: if this sounds like going out to like a college
- 46:37Speaker 1: football or a college basketball game. Now, now, who were
- 46:59Speaker 1: the two teams was playing in this game?
- 47:01Speaker 3: Genau, that would have been Sabu and Tokyo Okay, all
- 47:06Speaker 3: right with Tokyo Giants.
- 47:08Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right. The Tokyo Dome is really cool too.
- 47:12Speaker 3: It's kind of got a King Dome feel to it
- 47:14Speaker 3: from Seattle, a little bit of Tampa feel to it.
- 47:17Speaker 3: So it's it's so funny you get over here and
- 47:19Speaker 3: you get excited about the dim sum and all the
- 47:23Speaker 3: crazy food you're gonna eat and first meal we had
- 47:26Speaker 3: with CGI Fridays.
- 47:27Speaker 2: So but we have since done well on the restaurant. Okay,
- 47:33Speaker 2: all right, that's good. Gino.
- 47:35Speaker 1: The other thing in Geene Watson joining us live from
- 47:37Speaker 1: Tokyo uh this morning where it's five twenty six am Japan.
- 47:42Speaker 2: Time right now.
- 47:45Speaker 1: I've often heard that Japanese baseball, their major League, their
- 47:50Speaker 1: big League is from the totality of it, pitching, hitting, defense,
- 47:56Speaker 1: roster construction, everything may close resemble Triple A or between
- 48:03Speaker 1: double A and Triple A. What's your assessment of the
- 48:06Speaker 1: overall time Obviously in seeing Amurakami, obviously in seeing Otani
- 48:14Speaker 1: or or you know, any of the other great Japanese
- 48:17Speaker 1: are seeing a rookie Soasaki or any of these other
- 48:20Speaker 1: players down through the years, we've seen the best of
- 48:23Speaker 1: the best each row. Of course, at the top of
- 48:26Speaker 1: the list come over to the US. But the totality
- 48:31Speaker 1: of the baseball, the skill, the roster, the depth, how
- 48:34Speaker 1: would you describe it?
- 48:37Speaker 3: Well, I mean when you talk about the you know,
- 48:39Speaker 3: the Olympics, in the World Baseball Classic, and the things
- 48:41Speaker 3: that this country competes in globally against every country. You know,
- 48:45Speaker 3: from a top to bottom standpoint, the top of their
- 48:48Speaker 3: talent is is potentially the best in the world. When
- 48:51Speaker 3: you're talking about building out your twenty six man rosters
- 48:54Speaker 3: relative to how they present in the United States, I
- 48:56Speaker 3: would say that that probably a third to a quarter
- 49:00Speaker 3: of the team or Triple A and or fringe type
- 49:03Speaker 3: major league players that you would have in Triple A
- 49:05Speaker 3: that would bounce back and forth.
- 49:06Speaker 2: In the major leagues.
- 49:07Speaker 3: But but when you put the very best of this
- 49:10Speaker 3: league on the field, We've seen it in the World
- 49:12Speaker 3: Baseball Classic, in the Olympics, the very best that represents
- 49:17Speaker 3: this country or as good as anybody in the world.
- 49:19Speaker 3: And they take a lot of pride, it's a lot
- 49:21Speaker 3: of discipline. They played the game extremely fluid and fundamentally,
- 49:25Speaker 3: and there's there's no high walk games over here. These
- 49:29Speaker 3: games move very quick. Everybody throws strikes and so it's
- 49:32Speaker 3: a it's a very discipline game.
- 49:35Speaker 2: You know, Trey Wilman, Liberty.
- 49:38Speaker 3: Hill Residents, managed over here the Nipon team that won
- 49:42Speaker 3: the championship when he was here, and so you know,
- 49:44Speaker 3: I was calling him before the trip and like just
- 49:46Speaker 3: quizzing him on the things to expect in this country.
- 49:49Speaker 3: But the style of play and the discipline and the
- 49:52Speaker 3: respect that that they have for the game is is
- 49:54Speaker 3: second to none in the world.
- 49:56Speaker 1: I want to ask you a couple of things about
- 49:58Speaker 1: series going on this week. We talked about, you know,
- 50:01Speaker 1: last weekend Dodgers Brewers series was going to be big,
- 50:04Speaker 1: and the Brewers won three out of four, huge series
- 50:07Speaker 1: between Milwaukee and Atlanta. And this was right after you know,
- 50:11Speaker 1: the White Sox had stumbled a little bit, then came
- 50:13Speaker 1: through swept the series from the Tigers, then ran into
- 50:17Speaker 1: that Hot Braves team dropped two out of three, and
- 50:19Speaker 1: now Atlanta's playing Milwaukee. That would appear to be I
- 50:22Speaker 1: would think these series of the week in MLB, don't
- 50:26Speaker 1: you think it really is?
- 50:28Speaker 2: In Atlanta?
- 50:29Speaker 3: You know, we had that makeup game yesterday that Grant
- 50:31Speaker 3: Holmes pitching a tremendous game too, and there they are
- 50:35Speaker 3: very scary right now because they're healthy, and health has
- 50:39Speaker 3: been an issue for them for some time. But they've
- 50:41Speaker 3: got their lineup back. Their rotation is as good as
- 50:44Speaker 3: anybody in the game. And this is again as a
- 50:46Speaker 3: statement series for both teams. I think the Brewers have
- 50:49Speaker 3: continued to prove that they are one of, if not
- 50:52Speaker 3: the best team in the National League. But again, you know,
- 50:55Speaker 3: this is going to be a series that you know,
- 50:58Speaker 3: you want to kind of battle.
- 50:59Speaker 2: You look at our series again the Cubs.
- 51:00Speaker 3: You know, we won one of the three games, but
- 51:02Speaker 3: all three games were championship caliber play and that's really
- 51:05Speaker 3: what you're looking for in series like this leading into
- 51:07Speaker 3: September and the grind into the finish line.
- 51:10Speaker 2: That's right.
- 51:11Speaker 1: That was the other series I was going to mention
- 51:12Speaker 1: that the Cubs it was. Well, I want to ask
- 51:14Speaker 1: you a couple other things. One and I'd like for
- 51:18Speaker 1: you to give the educated perspective that you do from
- 51:21Speaker 1: the front office perspective on the challenge that a front
- 51:26Speaker 1: office has to deal with when it comes to a
- 51:29Speaker 1: situation like what the Diamondbacks are dealing with with kateel
- 51:32Speaker 1: Marteu he's Today they announced are transferring him from the
- 51:37Speaker 1: restricted list to the ten day injured list after he
- 51:41Speaker 1: failed to show up for that game in Boston. Mike
- 51:44Speaker 1: Hayes and their GM that you know, he confirmed yesterday
- 51:47Speaker 1: that Marte's going to go to the injured list and
- 51:49Speaker 1: will return once he's healthy. And this absence and apparent
- 51:54Speaker 1: injury come as a tough time for the Diamondbacks that
- 51:57Speaker 1: right then there in the thick of the fight of
- 51:58Speaker 1: this deal he had on his lefting on Tuesday. But
- 52:02Speaker 1: Tory Lavella, who I think is a really good manager
- 52:04Speaker 1: City has struggled to get information from Marte throughout the
- 52:08Speaker 1: course of the process. Last year, he went on that
- 52:11Speaker 1: restricted list when his home in Arizona was broken into
- 52:14Speaker 1: during the All Star break.
- 52:15Speaker 2: So it's kind of tough.
- 52:16Speaker 1: I wanted you to give some perspective on, you know,
- 52:19Speaker 1: the communication and the challenge for a front office when
- 52:22Speaker 1: a guy kind of goes the route that can tell
- 52:25Speaker 1: Marte has gone.
- 52:26Speaker 2: Both this year and last year.
- 52:28Speaker 3: Craig, it's a real struggle, and you know, I mean,
- 52:32Speaker 3: this is this is something that's really dear to me,
- 52:34Speaker 3: you know, the love for players, and I don't think
- 52:39Speaker 3: that the common fans really understands how hard it is
- 52:42Speaker 3: on major league players. It is a one hundred and
- 52:45Speaker 3: sixty two game season in one hundred and eighty two days.
- 52:49Speaker 3: You have the demands of your family, you know, day
- 52:53Speaker 3: in and day out, the demands of staying healthy day
- 52:56Speaker 3: in day out, the demands of expectations from your organization,
- 53:01Speaker 3: from the fans, and sometimes when things can go wrong,
- 53:05Speaker 3: they can go wrong very quickly. And I'm not talking
- 53:07Speaker 3: about just can tell Marte. So as an organization, the
- 53:10Speaker 3: one thing you want to do first and foremost is
- 53:13Speaker 3: let the player know that you truly care about them
- 53:15Speaker 3: as a person, not just a baseball player, but you
- 53:19Speaker 3: care about them as a person. You want to make
- 53:21Speaker 3: sure that first and foremost they're okay. Then you begin
- 53:24Speaker 3: to cut the conversations with the agents to see, you know,
- 53:27Speaker 3: what words the common ground that we can meet to
- 53:30Speaker 3: find out how we can move forward with this. And
- 53:33Speaker 3: you just never know what a player is going through.
- 53:37Speaker 3: You never know what a player what set that player
- 53:40Speaker 3: off from a mental health standpoint, from a health standpoint,
- 53:43Speaker 3: from a pressure standpoint, from performance, And so it's really
- 53:46Speaker 3: just taking it very slow and making the player and
- 53:50Speaker 3: his represented to understand that first and foremost, we care
- 53:52Speaker 3: about you as a person and we want to make
- 53:54Speaker 3: sure that everything's right with you. And then you just
- 53:58Speaker 3: try to move forward as quickly as you can and
- 54:00Speaker 3: to get the player back on the field.
- 54:02Speaker 1: Gene Watson, joining us live from Tokyo here on thirteen,
- 54:05Speaker 1: unders on two more things I want to ask about
- 54:07Speaker 1: GENA first of all, being the scouting savant that you've
- 54:12Speaker 1: been through the years, how about your thoughts on the
- 54:15Speaker 1: Mariners calling up Kate Anderson, the prize pitching prospect that
- 54:18Speaker 1: pitch for LSU's national championship team. He's supposed to pitch
- 54:22Speaker 1: tomorrow against the Cubs, speaking a big series obviously Seattle
- 54:26Speaker 1: in Chicago being one of how about your thoughts on
- 54:27Speaker 1: Kate Anderson being called up?
- 54:29Speaker 3: Well, you know, I'm very close with Jerry Depoto, the
- 54:31Speaker 3: president of the Mariners, and we've had a lot of
- 54:33Speaker 3: conversation at a lot of conversations with a lot of
- 54:36Speaker 3: people within the organization, and the common theme has been,
- 54:40Speaker 3: you know, we just still know why this hasn't moved
- 54:43Speaker 3: the way it was supposed to. I mean, this team
- 54:45Speaker 3: was arguably not only the best team in the division,
- 54:47Speaker 3: but one that should compete for a world championship this year,
- 54:50Speaker 3: and it just hasn't happened. But when you inject this
- 54:54Speaker 3: type of talent, like a Kate Anders an end of
- 54:58Speaker 3: the team, it can be you know, momentum baseball is
- 55:01Speaker 3: the next day starting pitcher, and when you inject this
- 55:03Speaker 3: type of talent he goes out and pitches well, it
- 55:06Speaker 3: can maybe inject an energy into the team. It's like, Okay,
- 55:09Speaker 3: we're gonna be just fine. This guy is every fifth
- 55:12Speaker 3: day and he is truly one of the most talented
- 55:15Speaker 3: pitchers in all of baseball, certainly one of the best
- 55:18Speaker 3: young talent pitchers in all of baseball. But this is
- 55:21Speaker 3: the lift that the Maritors may have needed. And oftentimes
- 55:24Speaker 3: after the trade deadline, if you don't get exactly what
- 55:26Speaker 3: you wanted from the trade deadline, from building your roster
- 55:29Speaker 3: from the top down, the injection from the minor league
- 55:32Speaker 3: system is one that can really play dividends. You saw
- 55:35Speaker 3: that in two thousand and three with us with Dontrell
- 55:38Speaker 3: Willison and Miguil Cabrerat with the Marlins.
- 55:42Speaker 2: You know, you saw it with your Dono Ventura with
- 55:44Speaker 2: US in Kansas City.
- 55:45Speaker 3: So this is this is actually a well timed, moved
- 55:48Speaker 3: by the Seattle Maritors to inject some life, some talent,
- 55:52Speaker 3: some energy into the twenty six men roster.
- 55:55Speaker 2: All right, here's the one other thing I wanted to
- 55:57Speaker 2: ask you about.
- 55:58Speaker 1: This is about the club you were like with and
- 56:00Speaker 1: you were a part of building that Kansas City Royals
- 56:03Speaker 1: World championship team. And we'd heard about this for some
- 56:06Speaker 1: time that the Royals were trying to get a real
- 56:09Speaker 1: initiative to go forward to build a new downtown stadium
- 56:12Speaker 1: near the Power and Light District, and which is a
- 56:15Speaker 1: wonderful place. It says, it's one of the one of
- 56:18Speaker 1: the things if you're going to miss something about being
- 56:20Speaker 1: in the Big twell, that would be one of them.
- 56:21Speaker 2: The Big twelve basketball Tournament. They're in the Power and
- 56:24Speaker 2: Light District.
- 56:25Speaker 1: And while wonderful things have been done in renovating Kaufman Stadium,
- 56:28Speaker 1: it's a great place to watch a ball game.
- 56:30Speaker 2: Still, the initiative has been to.
- 56:31Speaker 1: Move forward to try to get everybody on board to
- 56:34Speaker 1: build a new downtown ballpark. Well, they were able to
- 56:36Speaker 1: clear a big hurdle on Wednesday, the Kansas City City
- 56:39Speaker 1: Council proved a six hundred million dollar commitment to make
- 56:42Speaker 1: it happen. Of course, the club announced in April they
- 56:45Speaker 1: planned to partner with Hallmark Cards on a three billion
- 56:48Speaker 1: dollar project to create a mixed use development with the
- 56:51Speaker 1: new stadium as the centerpiece. And it says the city
- 56:55Speaker 1: Council's decision will set the general structure for how the
- 56:59Speaker 1: city financial share of the investment.
- 57:01Speaker 2: There's still more.
- 57:02Speaker 1: Steps to navigate, But how about your thoughts today, It
- 57:04Speaker 1: looks like it's a major step forward for the Royals
- 57:07Speaker 1: to be able to move to a downtown ballpark.
- 57:09Speaker 3: Well, I was talking to our good friend Bob Fesco
- 57:12Speaker 3: about this yesterday, and I'm just so excited. I Mean,
- 57:15Speaker 3: you don't spend seventeen years in a city and not
- 57:18Speaker 3: fall in love with the city and feel like it's
- 57:21Speaker 3: part of your fiver for the rest of your life.
- 57:23Speaker 3: And I just have so much love and affection for
- 57:26Speaker 3: the city of Kansas City, a tremendous baseball city, a
- 57:29Speaker 3: tremendous fan base, and I'm just so excited. You know,
- 57:34Speaker 3: for all the opposition that they've had, for the struggles
- 57:39Speaker 3: that they've had building in the stadium, and the debate
- 57:40Speaker 3: on where the stadium should be, the thing that is
- 57:43Speaker 3: so exciting is that there's going to be a new
- 57:45Speaker 3: ballpark in Kansas City. And once the first opening day
- 57:49Speaker 3: takes place and people really start to dive into the
- 57:53Speaker 3: ballpark and dive into the area around the ballpark, you
- 57:56Speaker 3: begin to create a new generation of fans. Those are
- 58:00Speaker 3: the people you know long after we're going from this
- 58:02Speaker 3: Earthla Like, I'm super excited for the next generation of
- 58:05Speaker 3: fans in Kansas City to.
- 58:07Speaker 2: Have a venue like that in arguably one of.
- 58:09Speaker 3: The greatest sports cities in the world, and so super
- 58:12Speaker 3: excited for the rules organization, for their players, and certainly
- 58:16Speaker 3: for the fan base in the city of Kansas City.
- 58:18Speaker 3: It's it's going to be a wonderful, wonderful thing when
- 58:21Speaker 3: it's finished.
- 58:22Speaker 2: So you know, the only question I have about this.
- 58:23Speaker 1: If they're partnering with Hallmark Cards on a three million,
- 58:26Speaker 1: three billion dollar project, I guess maybe they'll they could
- 58:29Speaker 1: call it Hallmark Stateum my question is this, couldn't the
- 58:33Speaker 1: Royals then land the Hallmark Network as their channel, much
- 58:37Speaker 1: like the Dodgers have with Spectrum Sports Net or the
- 58:40Speaker 1: Yankees have with the Yes Network, and have their own
- 58:43Speaker 1: television network through the Hallmark Channel.
- 58:46Speaker 2: Makes sense, right?
- 58:47Speaker 3: Maybe you may be onto something there, Craig, and you
- 58:49Speaker 3: might be onto something there.
- 58:51Speaker 1: And they could show romantic comedies like in between ballgames,
- 58:55Speaker 1: or imagery scenes from romantic from rom comms.
- 58:58Speaker 2: In between innings. You know, maybe who knows.
- 59:01Speaker 3: Film a lot of it, and they can film a
- 59:02Speaker 3: lot of those scenes at my favorite restaurant, Garrosos in.
- 59:05Speaker 2: Kansas City, Okay, in Little Italy, that's my favorite. That's
- 59:08Speaker 2: my favorite area in Kansas City. Love that. When do
- 59:11Speaker 2: you come home?
- 59:14Speaker 3: Coming home Friday the twenty eighth, we'll actually be the
- 59:19Speaker 3: twenty ninth here, arrive the twenty eighth, and then we're
- 59:22Speaker 3: in Houston thirty one, one, two and three, looking forward
- 59:25Speaker 3: to that, and then it's off to lambeau Field for
- 59:26Speaker 3: Notre Dame.
- 59:28Speaker 2: Oh that's great.
- 59:29Speaker 1: Hey, if we get a chance to love to do
- 59:30Speaker 1: it again with you in Japan next week, try to
- 59:32Speaker 1: hook up again.
- 59:33Speaker 2: If that's okay, you bet it sounds great, Thank you, Gino.
- 59:36Speaker 2: And now go back to bed and get some sleep,
- 59:38Speaker 2: you know. Thank you.
- 59:40Speaker 1: That's Steve Watson at five thirty seven a m.
- 59:46Speaker 5: Sun.
- 59:47Speaker 2: Yeah it is, and that he can come up yet
- 59:49Speaker 2: there in Japan.
- 59:50Speaker 1: All right, we have more coming up when we continue
- 59:52Speaker 1: on thirteen hundred the zone and the IR radio app
- 59:57Speaker 1: here on a fire me up Friday here on a
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: one thirteen hundred zone Dave Matthews fan will fire you
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: up as well. A little late World Series Washington up
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: on Texas four to two. That's now in the fifth inning,
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: so it's starting to get serious. But it would only
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: be the first loss for the Burning team as they
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: do fall. I mentioned the log runs are gonna have
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: this scrimmage coming up tomorrow and the veterans will get
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: more more snaps, and that includes Cam Coleman, who transferred
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: him from Auburn. And Coleman was asked, what is his
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: biggest challenge here? You can think about it coming through
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: the portal, adapting to everything through the transfer from Auburn,
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: and uh this Texas program and coach Sark and you know,
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: working with the other receivers. So you would think, you know,
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: what are the biggest challenges that now he had something
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: else in mind.
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: Biggest jellings heard say and want some say again, Traffic.
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: I tell you traffic every day and I.
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: Fl like has got just get by the day, all right,
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: So there it is. Traffic. Can't say is a blaming.
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: You know what, I agree, it's he's learned that pretty quickly.
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: Demiko Ryans, the Texans coach, after their loss to the
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: Raiders last night. But their first line guys really did
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: a pretty good jobindent, so he was asked if the
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: game was one where he was able to see a
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: good continuation of their joint practices, regardless of the final score.
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: Had really great practice this week.
- 1:01:36Speaker 6: Really proud of the practice that we had both sides
- 1:01:39Speaker 6: of the ball, offensive and defensively. Thought our guys practiced
- 1:01:42Speaker 6: really well. They had a lot of good reps, a
- 1:01:45Speaker 6: lot of good positive plays that happened for us throughout
- 1:01:48Speaker 6: the practice and also in the game this week, guys
- 1:01:51Speaker 6: picked up right where they left off in the first half.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, And did he see what he wanted
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: to see in the limited time that he had CJ.
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: Stroud out on the field.
- 1:01:59Speaker 6: I wanted to see him them out get some live
- 1:02:01Speaker 6: reps with the first offensive line, just see him get
- 1:02:03Speaker 6: in rhythm, have some many fishing plays. And he did
- 1:02:06Speaker 6: exactly you know what we expecting him to do. And
- 1:02:09Speaker 6: that's the reason you just go get those live reps
- 1:02:12Speaker 6: for him. So it's not the first time that they're
- 1:02:14Speaker 6: rolling out versus Buffalo.
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: Okay, all right, and uh Jerry Jones in uh and
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: talking about his team headed over to Phoenix or Glendale
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: to play the Arizona Cardinals tomorrow night.
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: Had a had a pretty good exchange with our good
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: friend Clarence Hill, who's covered the Cowboys forever for the
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: Forest Or Telegram and then his own site as well.
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: And chill, as people knew Clarence Hill, chill, he kind
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: of had. He's known Clarence a long time, Jerry has
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: and they get along really well. But he had an
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: interesting exchange talking about Brian Schotteimer saying his.
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: Team's not going to take anything from anybody.
- 1:02:52Speaker 7: I'm offended Sportsmanshire, especially from you. Is your mother watching? No, seriously,
- 1:03:11Speaker 7: without any humor at all. This is serious matter and
- 1:03:17Speaker 7: it needs to be taken that way by everybody associated
- 1:03:21Speaker 7: at the club level right up through the top.
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, you know it's one thing about not taking
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: any bleep from anybody, but yeah, he did say it's
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: a pretty serious matter.
- 1:03:34Speaker 5: After laughing about it for fifteen seconds. Absolutely in the
- 1:03:38Speaker 5: way only Jerry can.
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt about it.
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: We'll be back to wrap up our number two here,
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: I'm thirteen under the Zone.
- 1:03:49Speaker 9: Welcome back to the Craig Way Show and the Voice
- 1:03:52Speaker 9: of the Longhorns Craig.
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: Follow Craig on social media at or Force.
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: I'm glad Jake brought us back here on this Repped Up,
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: Fired Up Friday with E.
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: L O H the Great Jeff Lynn.
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: I made a comment about this yesterday because we were
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: talking about, uh, this recent scheme of concerts that Lynda
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: and I have been seeing throughout the court so the summer,
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: and we concluded our so called summer concerts series on
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: Wednesday with Chicago and Sticks. However, it was a couple
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: of years ago that we saw Elo and I mentioned
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: Jeff Lynn and how I thought they were one of
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: the great underrated bands. The point of all of this
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: is that when I asked our next guest if he
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: would join us this week, he said yes, if we
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: can also discuss your summer concerts series. So with that
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: in mind, we conclude our SEC football previews today with
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: Texas A and M and the voice of the Fight
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: in Texas Haggis.
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: That would be Andrew Monico, who joins us. I appreciate
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: the time. How are you.
- 1:05:36Speaker 9: I'm always wonderful to talk to you.
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: I'm serious.
- 1:05:38Speaker 9: I mean you had a stellar lineup bands this summer.
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: It was good and they came through.
- 1:05:45Speaker 9: You saw them, correct.
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: I tried to.
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: And we also went up north and saw a little
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: riverband in Arlington and over the summer and we've seen
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: We've seen.
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: A whole bunch lately.
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: I think our next one on the schedule is not
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: till October with Skags. But we saw Boz a few
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: years ago. We saw and this this has nothing new
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: with rock and roll so much as it did popular music.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: But seeing the great Herb Alpert and the Tijuana brass
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: at age ninety two still blowing the horn. Seeing him
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: back in February, it's amazing. And I know you're a
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: big fan of the rock era and also the hot
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: rock era.
- 1:06:22Speaker 10: Yeah you when you said you were saying Boskags, The
- 1:06:25Speaker 10: Dukes of September came through San Antonio with Donald Fagan
- 1:06:29Speaker 10: and Michael McDonald and it was phenomenal.
- 1:06:33Speaker 9: And Boz still has it. I'm telling you, I didn't
- 1:06:36Speaker 9: want it to end. You know, you know you've been
- 1:06:37Speaker 9: to those, so you just don't want the cover. There's
- 1:06:40Speaker 9: certain there are certain songs you don't want to end.
- 1:06:42Speaker 9: There are certain concerts that, yeah, you guys can keep
- 1:06:45Speaker 9: on playing anything you please, whenever you choose. That was
- 1:06:48Speaker 9: definitely one of them. I know, I know you will
- 1:06:51Speaker 9: definitely enjoy.
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: And another Yeah, and we saw him at the Paramount
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: Theater in Austin. It's been about four years ago, but
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: we would definitely go back. And then to your point
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: about concerts you wish would not end. Two weeks ago,
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: seeing the guests who in Fort Worth was and Don
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: Felder can still bring it the former Eagle open for them,
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: it was great. But but but the guests who was
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: just seeing Burton Cummings at age seventy eight belt out
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: American Woman is a sight to behold.
- 1:07:19Speaker 9: So it's amazing again, isn't it the classic example if
- 1:07:23Speaker 9: you're doing what you love, don't stop playing, keep just
- 1:07:28Speaker 9: keep keep keep on playing. And look, they're joy bringers,
- 1:07:31Speaker 9: aren't they, Craig. They bring joy to their audiences and
- 1:07:34Speaker 9: it's to me, it's a it's a special connection that
- 1:07:37Speaker 9: we have is musicians, their music and our enjoyment.
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: Well, you bring up a great point because I mentioned
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: yesterday there's some people in a post of the pictures
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: and ah, they're nothing more now in the cover band,
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: Chicago only has Lee Locknane left and and uh and
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: Dennis de Young isn't with sticks anymore. And I'm like, look,
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: it's just like I said, the long worn fans enjoyed
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: the two thousand and five season with Vince Young. He's
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: not playing anymore, but Texas is still playing who. You
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: enjoyed this rendition of it and still seeing Tommy Shaw
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: with sticks and still seeing Lee Lockning with Chicago, still
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: seeing Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman with you know, playing
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: Guess Who songs and Bachman Turner Overdrive hits. I mean,
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: we get to see the band's evolution and the artist
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: evolution of our time.
- 1:08:22Speaker 9: Yeah. And to me, what's wrong with the echoes of right,
- 1:08:26Speaker 9: it's it's the memories And obviously those members of those
- 1:08:31Speaker 9: bands now have that same passion. But that's why that
- 1:08:35Speaker 9: connection was made to the past. I'm with you, doesn't
- 1:08:38Speaker 9: take away from the present. In fact, sometimes it allows
- 1:08:41Speaker 9: us to enjoy. Also, obviously that team you talked about
- 1:08:46Speaker 9: set the bar. That's a great thing, right, that's the expectations. Yeah,
- 1:08:51Speaker 9: I'm with you again. You can't describe someone else's joy.
- 1:08:55Speaker 9: If you get joy from it, honestly, that's all that matters.
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: Absolutely. And and Andrew Monica, the Voice of the Aggies
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: with us here on thirteen under the Zone. Toward that end,
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: we're talking about traditions and things and the traditions that
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: they have at Texas A and M. And the traditions
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: they have at Texas means so much to the fan base,
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: is almost as much as the winning does. The winning
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: obviously means the most to the fans, but the perfect
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: combination is with you have the traditions wrapped into the
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: winning as well. And I know that's the hope for
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: a lot of Aggie fans about what this Texas A
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: and M team is capable of producing this fall on
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: the football field.
- 1:09:34Speaker 9: Yeah, expectations change, and you know what, you have to
- 1:09:36Speaker 9: live up to the expectations. And the beauty of head
- 1:09:38Speaker 9: coach Mike Elko Craig is he has said that this
- 1:09:42Speaker 9: program has not handled success. Well, he was a part
- 1:09:46Speaker 9: of it that didn't handle success. Well, well, that's brand new.
- 1:09:49Speaker 9: And if you want to be in the upper echelon
- 1:09:51Speaker 9: of the SEC, you have to handle those expectations and
- 1:09:54Speaker 9: you have to be better than you were in the
- 1:09:56Speaker 9: past and you have to keep building. And that's the
- 1:09:59Speaker 9: beauty of wh We've talked about this. He's honest without
- 1:10:02Speaker 9: being personal. This is the honesty. What they did last
- 1:10:06Speaker 9: year was special. They got into the College Football Playoff.
- 1:10:09Speaker 9: They had never done that before. But there's a couple
- 1:10:12Speaker 9: things that were missing. They lost in Austin to Texas
- 1:10:15Speaker 9: for the second consecutive year, a chance to go to Atlanta.
- 1:10:19Speaker 9: They've never been there, and they put themselves in position
- 1:10:22Speaker 9: twice the first year, eight wins. They didn't play well
- 1:10:26Speaker 9: in November. What was the mantra finish? They didn't finish, Craig,
- 1:10:30Speaker 9: I can't be any more honest than that. They got
- 1:10:33Speaker 9: out physical in the last thirty minutes against Texas, they
- 1:10:36Speaker 9: got out physicaled against Miami. That has to be the
- 1:10:39Speaker 9: chip on the shoulder. So you go from finish to
- 1:10:42Speaker 9: unfinished business. And you hope that the players coming back understand.
- 1:10:46Speaker 9: Is that an extra rep in the weight room, Is
- 1:10:47Speaker 9: that an extra route that you run? Things like that,
- 1:10:50Speaker 9: But you can't forget that that was an eleven win team.
- 1:10:53Speaker 9: You can't forget that they went to the playoff. Now
- 1:10:56Speaker 9: build on it. You just got respected Number eight in
- 1:11:00Speaker 9: a preseason poll. That's great. What are you going to
- 1:11:03Speaker 9: do now when the ball snaps? Because as you know,
- 1:11:05Speaker 9: and this is what the Longhorns have faced, your everybody's
- 1:11:09Speaker 9: marquee game on the schedule, you better get used to
- 1:11:12Speaker 9: that target being on your back. Way easier being the
- 1:11:15Speaker 9: underdog than the favorite. That's where Texas A and m
- 1:11:18Speaker 9: I don't think they've worn that mantle well in the past.
- 1:11:20Speaker 9: I think under Mike Elko, I think they're gonna wear
- 1:11:22Speaker 9: it better. But that's going to be one of the
- 1:11:24Speaker 9: tests this season, is that.
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: A bit of the vibe that you may have gotten
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: from this group is understanding that even though it was
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: a better season in year two, the finishing thing, the
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: finishing piece wasn't where they wanted it to be, either
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: of the game in Austin or Obviously, it's even more
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: heartbreaking to lose a home college football playoff game when
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: you're right there with a shot. I'm sure that if
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: folks had offered you, or offered Mike Elko said, Look,
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: Mimi's only going to score ten points in the football game,
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: probably feel pretty good about chance to win. So have
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: you gotten that kind of vibe from the players that
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: you've watched on the practice field and visited with that.
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: There is kind of this unfinished business mentality going on
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: because they were unable to finish those two ball games
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: at the end of the season.
- 1:12:14Speaker 9: Yeah, it had it has been like that, and that's
- 1:12:16Speaker 9: the disappointment. And Craig, isn't that the way fans are
- 1:12:19Speaker 9: You tell them, oh, it's going to be an eleven
- 1:12:20Speaker 9: win season and you're going to be all excited, right,
- 1:12:23Speaker 9: So who.
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: Are the two losses?
- 1:12:25Speaker 9: The two most important games that you played, right, So
- 1:12:28Speaker 9: that's where you balance it. And look, I think there's
- 1:12:31Speaker 9: an awful lot to the players who moved on into
- 1:12:33Speaker 9: the NFL Draft are leaving their legacy of how do
- 1:12:37Speaker 9: you prepare? This is what we did to get to
- 1:12:40Speaker 9: a season like that. Now we hand it off to you,
- 1:12:43Speaker 9: and to me, it's special that the young linebackers they
- 1:12:47Speaker 9: got to play with Tory and York or a lineman
- 1:12:48Speaker 9: watch Trey Zoon or wide receivers they saw how Casey
- 1:12:52Speaker 9: Concepcione was. That's where the legacy comes. And again it
- 1:12:56Speaker 9: was almost like you guys, now take it the next step.
- 1:12:59Speaker 9: Year one was the foundation. Okay, we got the first
- 1:13:02Speaker 9: floor done, second floor is a little unfinished. Now it's
- 1:13:05Speaker 9: up to you. And again we're not going to know
- 1:13:08Speaker 9: until November. But the September and October games sets you up.
- 1:13:13Speaker 9: That set them up for the Aggies to be on
- 1:13:14Speaker 9: the cusp of going to an SEC championship game. And
- 1:13:18Speaker 9: again we can argue in this college Football playoff, is
- 1:13:22Speaker 9: it better to go again? A and M's never been there.
- 1:13:25Speaker 9: That would be a great, great thing for the Aggies
- 1:13:27Speaker 9: to go play a championship game in Atlanta because they
- 1:13:29Speaker 9: haven't been there. They've gotten all the paperwork, they've done,
- 1:13:32Speaker 9: all the preparations, they've never gotten on that plane to
- 1:13:35Speaker 9: play in that game. I think that would be another
- 1:13:37Speaker 9: step into Hey, these are the expectations for this program.
- 1:13:43Speaker 9: This is what we want to do every year. So
- 1:13:44Speaker 9: when you come into this program as a transfer or
- 1:13:47Speaker 9: as a freshman, as a recruit, here's your expectation.
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: On all of these SEC previews with a prior fifteen
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: fourteen play by play voices of the other fifteen in
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: this conference, uh you know, uh. Separating from Texas, I've
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: started off use the offense with a quarterback and in
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: many cases I got the we'll wait and see. You
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: know that says, it's kind of up in the air.
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: It's you know, with several of the schools, that's not
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: the case here, and and and there's, there's and and
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: I ticked them off yesterday. There's a few schools that
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: fall into this category. Texas would be one, with arch
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: spanning obviously, Trinidad Chambler's at ole Miss certainly comes to mind.
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: There there are Gunner Stockton at Georgia. There there are
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: schools for whom that's a given about what you're going
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: to get. I would say the same thing would be
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: for Marcel Reed, even though by Marcel's own comments and
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: what he said, he feels he has another step to
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: take as a quarterback.
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: Yeah, but you're.
- 1:14:47Speaker 9: Right, he's the guy, right And I understood this when
- 1:14:51Speaker 9: Mike said this last year. Mikelko said this last year.
- 1:14:54Speaker 9: He understands what it takes to be the number one
- 1:14:56Speaker 9: quarterback in the SEC. Now, even that's he's got to
- 1:15:00Speaker 9: be even more consistent than he was. There was some inconsistency.
- 1:15:04Speaker 9: You can't have an entire first half be bad against
- 1:15:08Speaker 9: South Carolina. And now the leadership came to in that
- 1:15:11Speaker 9: locker room, Mike Goko didn't have to say a lot.
- 1:15:14Speaker 9: It was Marcel and Torrian Yorke who did all the talking.
- 1:15:18Speaker 9: But how do you make it maybe a driver too,
- 1:15:21Speaker 9: and get back on tracks. That's what I think is
- 1:15:23Speaker 9: the next step. The leadership is there. He's learned to
- 1:15:26Speaker 9: throw the deep ball better. And let's be honest, you're
- 1:15:30Speaker 9: a better quarterback when you have Casey conceptsi On catching
- 1:15:32Speaker 9: right like that. That's the thing. Like the wide receiving
- 1:15:35Speaker 9: Corps has done hurt, No, it doesn't. It makes you.
- 1:15:39Speaker 9: But Mario krag is back, and you bring in Isaiah
- 1:15:41Speaker 9: Horton from Alabama. That's going to help. And you see Ashton,
- 1:15:44Speaker 9: Bethel Roman and Terry Bussey being healthy. It's a little
- 1:15:47Speaker 9: bit deeper as well. But that's what's next for Marcell.
- 1:15:50Speaker 9: And he never stops getting better. He doesn't say, Okay,
- 1:15:54Speaker 9: I'm number one and I'm going to relax. That's not
- 1:15:57Speaker 9: the case. What's really good for them is now it's
- 1:15:59Speaker 9: the same second year for Brady Harts. It's not new.
- 1:16:02Speaker 9: He wasn't the number two. That's Miles O'Neil who's now
- 1:16:05Speaker 9: at North Carolina. Now Brady Hart's it's a new role
- 1:16:08Speaker 9: for him. But Marcel is one. He is that leader
- 1:16:11Speaker 9: and he reaches across that line of scrimmage. He leads
- 1:16:15Speaker 9: that defense. He's one of those leaders in the team.
- 1:16:17Speaker 9: To me, it's the consistency and making those throws. Something
- 1:16:20Speaker 9: mikel Riley has tight end said, it's our job to
- 1:16:24Speaker 9: catch the ball and be in position for Marcell. That's
- 1:16:27Speaker 9: now what we need to do. And I think you'll
- 1:16:29Speaker 9: see Marcell use the legs a little bit because he
- 1:16:32Speaker 9: can be a game breaker. And I just think that
- 1:16:35Speaker 9: what is next for him and watching him while he's
- 1:16:38Speaker 9: been here, continue to learn, continue to grow. Be in
- 1:16:41Speaker 9: that film room talking with now Holman Wiggins, it was
- 1:16:45Speaker 9: Colin Klein. You see the maturation as well and understand
- 1:16:49Speaker 9: the importance of being in that role. He is the guy,
- 1:16:53Speaker 9: and I think he's got the makeup to be that guy.
- 1:16:57Speaker 9: Whether it's slings and arrows or whether it's praise. I
- 1:16:59Speaker 9: think he's able to handle both.
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: Uh. Yeah, I would imagine you feel pretty good about
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: your offensive line with all the veterans you have coming
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: back there on the old line.
- 1:17:07Speaker 9: Yeah, it's an SEC line. They need to play together
- 1:17:11Speaker 9: and that's the whole thing. And what I've liked talking
- 1:17:14Speaker 9: with them, and they've kind of adopted this. It's it's
- 1:17:18Speaker 9: not that we don't want Marcel to get sacked. We
- 1:17:20Speaker 9: don't want Marcel to get hit and I love that.
- 1:17:23Speaker 9: And no matter what you do, you greg, doesn't matter
- 1:17:26Speaker 9: you win up front, it doesn't matter what league, pro college,
- 1:17:31Speaker 9: you win up front. How quickly will that group come together,
- 1:17:35Speaker 9: because it will be guys from around the SEC who
- 1:17:38Speaker 9: have played against SEC D lines and pick an SEC
- 1:17:46Speaker 9: schedule yours hours anybody's you're going to face a front
- 1:17:50Speaker 9: four that's outstanding to that point, I'm not sure you're
- 1:17:54Speaker 9: going to. I don't know. I'm not sure the A
- 1:17:56Speaker 9: and M offensive line is going to see a better
- 1:17:58Speaker 9: defensive line than what they're going to to see Monday
- 1:18:00Speaker 9: through Thursday. And I think that sharpens that skill for them.
- 1:18:05Speaker 9: How quickly they come together, that's going to be one
- 1:18:08Speaker 9: of the question marks with some teams early in the schedule.
- 1:18:12Speaker 9: And I'm thinking Kentucky new head coach, Arkansas new head coach,
- 1:18:16Speaker 9: even LSU new head coach. They're going to be talented.
- 1:18:20Speaker 9: I don't know if that's an advantage or not. Where
- 1:18:22Speaker 9: it's Mike Elko going into year three and a number
- 1:18:25Speaker 9: of players coming back, but Yeah, I think it really
- 1:18:28Speaker 9: will be decided the success by how quickly that offensive
- 1:18:31Speaker 9: line comes together and plays as a group. I just
- 1:18:34Speaker 9: saw Kellen Mond today at practice and he talked about
- 1:18:38Speaker 9: even that line in twenty twenty, the team that went
- 1:18:41Speaker 9: to the Orange Bowl, it was the fourth and two
- 1:18:43Speaker 9: against Florida. It was that game where that line came together.
- 1:18:48Speaker 9: Isaiah Spiller scores and that's when it really came together
- 1:18:52Speaker 9: and took off. Can that happen early in the season
- 1:18:55Speaker 9: for this offensive line to gel and play as a
- 1:18:58Speaker 9: what do they say, not five fingers, but as.
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: A fist, no doubt about it.
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: Andrew Monico played by play voice of the Texas A
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: and m Aggie's joining us here on thirteen under the
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: Zoner Sec Previews. It's safe to say, as good as
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: this Aggie defense is capable of being again this year,
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: that the strengths will be the down lineman in the
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: back four there, even though you've got a veteran or
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: two at the linebacking spot as well. It's hard to
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: pick what I would call the question mark really with
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: this defensive unit.
- 1:19:26Speaker 9: Yeah, I'm hoping it's salty. I like using that. I
- 1:19:28Speaker 9: like what defensive coordinators say we're salty, and as you
- 1:19:32Speaker 9: know in camp, this is the time right now when
- 1:19:35Speaker 9: you start getting the skirmishes.
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: Right right because it gets little shippy.
- 1:19:39Speaker 9: They're getting salty. No the D line, and Mike Elko
- 1:19:42Speaker 9: said this that more D line. Since he was the
- 1:19:44Speaker 9: DC in twenty eighteen, they've sent more D linemen to
- 1:19:46Speaker 9: the NFL. And it's almost been a point of pride here,
- 1:19:49Speaker 9: has it not. And Mike's been a part of that.
- 1:19:51Speaker 9: Now he's also an old safeties coach, so you know
- 1:19:53Speaker 9: the back end is going to be good. You start
- 1:19:56Speaker 9: on that D line and I think it's going to
- 1:19:57Speaker 9: be on the interior. DJ Hicks here's a kid that
- 1:20:01Speaker 9: I know that they really loved when they brought in
- 1:20:03Speaker 9: and that development, but even he knows he has to
- 1:20:05Speaker 9: go to another level. Marco Jones was a freshman last
- 1:20:09Speaker 9: year and really they limited his reps early, but they
- 1:20:12Speaker 9: didn't towards the end. He was in the crux of
- 1:20:14Speaker 9: the game. That's important. Antosaka, who they get from Northwestern,
- 1:20:18Speaker 9: will be a very big edge guy. Now he's got
- 1:20:20Speaker 9: to replace cash as Hall and there will be those
- 1:20:23Speaker 9: comparisons to him that will be big on the back end,
- 1:20:27Speaker 9: both safeties come back in Marcus Ratcliffe could have gone
- 1:20:30Speaker 9: to the draft decide to come back. He and Dalton
- 1:20:33Speaker 9: Brooks will be at safeties, and I think getting Ricky
- 1:20:35Speaker 9: Gibson the third replacing Will Lee at corner that experience
- 1:20:40Speaker 9: at Tennessee with des Rick's on the other side. The
- 1:20:43Speaker 9: other thing that I think you have to have, Craig,
- 1:20:45Speaker 9: especially going to a nine game SEC schedule, do you
- 1:20:49Speaker 9: have depth or do you just have guys? And I
- 1:20:52Speaker 9: think you have to have depth to succeed because, as
- 1:20:55Speaker 9: you know, teams are too good and if you have
- 1:20:58Speaker 9: a player who's not nearly as good SEC, teams will
- 1:21:02Speaker 9: target that player. They will pick at that flaw. And
- 1:21:05Speaker 9: that's where I think, because of the nine games battered,
- 1:21:09Speaker 9: you're going to have to have rotational players. You better
- 1:21:12Speaker 9: not have any drop off. And I think what's really
- 1:21:15Speaker 9: key to what Mike has built is I think he's
- 1:21:17Speaker 9: got the depth at these positions as well, and you're
- 1:21:20Speaker 9: going to see that kind of rotation through games. On
- 1:21:23Speaker 9: ten play drives, you may see a different line and
- 1:21:26Speaker 9: then you also have your ones who are fresh towards.
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: The end of the game.
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: You kind of went the direction I was getting ready
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: to go. Because the way I've also done this with
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: all of our SEC play by play brethren is to
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: ask their opinion of the nine game conference schedule, because
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: it does provide a bit of a challenge, especially if
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: you only have two games before jumping in the conference plays.
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: The Aggies do with Kentucky opening a conference play at
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: home with a test from Arizona State obviously at hand,
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: and you open with Missouri State, and most of the
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: guys almost too, man, I think have said and I
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: kind of feel this as well. The nine game conference schedule,
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: I think is great for the fans, It's good for
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: us of our broadcasters and for media. Obviously, coaches would
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: rather it not be that way. As I said, you know,
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: I keep quoting our women's basketball coach Vick Schaefer who
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: says you'd rather play a quality opponent than three named
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: directional state university, you know, as a non conference opponent. There.
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: How about your thoughts on the nine game schedule?
- 1:22:29Speaker 9: Yeah, to me, and pick a sport, any sport in
- 1:22:32Speaker 9: the SEC. Once you get in the conference, nobody's beating
- 1:22:35Speaker 9: that strength of schedule, nobody. Will it work to the
- 1:22:39Speaker 9: advantage or not? Is there SEC fatigue for voters. I
- 1:22:43Speaker 9: personally don't think so, Craig. I look at the outsiders
- 1:22:47Speaker 9: who say, you know that, they don't. They don't have
- 1:22:49Speaker 9: to play the schedule, so they don't. I think it's
- 1:22:51Speaker 9: easy to say, now this will be the first time
- 1:22:54Speaker 9: the Aggies have an SEC game in Week three. That's
- 1:22:57Speaker 9: that's going to be an adjustment to jump into the conference.
- 1:22:59Speaker 9: I think it has to work to your advantage when
- 1:23:01Speaker 9: it comes to the playoff that you're there's no nine
- 1:23:05Speaker 9: game schedule. That's easy. Sorry, you can say it you
- 1:23:08Speaker 9: have until you go through it, until you until you
- 1:23:11Speaker 9: have to wake up on the Sunday morning and realize,
- 1:23:14Speaker 9: I don't care it might be the worst team in
- 1:23:16Speaker 9: the SEC. You're still getting You're still getting a test.
- 1:23:19Speaker 9: I think it has to be in the favor that
- 1:23:22Speaker 9: it has to be favorable when it looked at the
- 1:23:24Speaker 9: playoff that you played nine SEC games plus that tenth
- 1:23:30Speaker 9: game is against a power for it's got to work
- 1:23:33Speaker 9: to your advantage or what are we doing? Because if
- 1:23:35Speaker 9: it doesn't work to our advantage, go back to eight?
- 1:23:38Speaker 9: You know what I mean? That that's what gets me
- 1:23:40Speaker 9: or eight and a power to me with nine and
- 1:23:43Speaker 9: everybody's playing nine. And as you know, before the Aggies
- 1:23:46Speaker 9: played Texas, we have Oklahoma. There's no longer having that
- 1:23:51Speaker 9: directional team. Now. If A and M and Texas both
- 1:23:55Speaker 9: had that directional team, that's fine.
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: In the schedule.
- 1:23:57Speaker 9: That's not the way it is. That's now, that's now
- 1:23:59Speaker 9: a conference game, making November even more difficult. Everybody has
- 1:24:05Speaker 9: to do it. Okay, but if we pick each other
- 1:24:07Speaker 9: off every once in a while, is nine and three
- 1:24:10Speaker 9: in the SEC as impressive as eleven and something in
- 1:24:14Speaker 9: a conference that's not as strong. Personally, Yes, they deserve
- 1:24:18Speaker 9: to be there. I've always said this, no matter what,
- 1:24:22Speaker 9: I don't think other schools like to see an SEC
- 1:24:25Speaker 9: name pop up. NCAA tournament March madness they hate it.
- 1:24:29Speaker 9: Baseball regional, they hate in an SEC. Don't they think
- 1:24:32Speaker 9: it's like, because you're tested, you're tested for thirty games
- 1:24:35Speaker 9: in baseball, you're tested for twenty games in basketball, you're
