- 0:05Speaker 1: It's the Happy Families Podcast.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Be really intentional about the way you engage with one another.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Connection is the heart of relationships, it's the heart of happiness.
- 0:15Speaker 3: And now here's the stars of our show, my mum
- 0:18Speaker 3: and dad.
- 0:19Speaker 2: I'm feeling a little bit emotional. I'm very, very excited,
- 0:21Speaker 2: but I'm a little bit sad. This is our last
- 0:23Speaker 2: podcast episode of twenty twenty one.
- 0:26Speaker 1: It's over.
- 0:27Speaker 4: It's been a big year, it really has. We've had floods,
- 0:29Speaker 4: we've lost of dog.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Yeah, well that's the living room, Mother's Day, Mother's Wow.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Yeah, now we've shared it with you all.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Yeah, it's been wonderful to be able to enjoy twenty
- 0:40Speaker 2: twenty one on the podcast and do what we can
- 0:42Speaker 2: to help make your family happy. Out by the way,
- 0:44Speaker 2: We're Justin and Kylie Coulson. I'm the parenting expert on
- 0:46Speaker 2: Parental Guidance Channel Lines, reality TV show about families and parenting,
- 0:51Speaker 2: and the founder of Happy Families dot com dot and
- 0:53Speaker 2: Coylie and.
- 0:53Speaker 1: I are the mum and dad of six kids.
- 0:56Speaker 2: And as we wrap up the year with our podcast,
- 1:00Speaker 2: we're going to keep this one really simple and really short.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Three things to help you have a very merry Christmas.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Number one, We've got to check in with our own
- 1:12Speaker 3: value systems. I think so often we get caught up
- 1:15Speaker 3: in what Christmas should or is supposed to look like by.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Some I don't know everybody's expectations.
- 1:22Speaker 4: Of what it should look like.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Yeah, and we lose ourselves in the process. So I
- 1:26Speaker 3: think checking in and just realigning with our own value
- 1:29Speaker 3: systems will make such a difference to how Christmas feels
- 1:33Speaker 3: this year.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Can I ask you, honestly if you were to tell
- 1:35Speaker 2: me your top three things in terms of values for
- 1:39Speaker 2: you this Christmas?
- 1:40Speaker 1: Because we haven't had this conversation. I mean, this is
- 1:42Speaker 1: really important.
- 1:43Speaker 2: What would you say will help Christmas to go well
- 1:45Speaker 2: based on your top three values around this time of year.
- 1:49Speaker 4: Connecting with our family with our children.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, so not extended family, just connecting with you,
- 1:54Speaker 2: me and our kids.
- 1:56Speaker 1: That's Number one.
- 1:57Speaker 3: A simple day where we just we're actually not worried
- 2:00Speaker 3: about all of the details. We're actually just able to
- 2:02Speaker 3: spend time together.
- 2:03Speaker 2: So subtract and reduce. Except for the food. I want
- 2:05Speaker 2: an abundance of food.
- 2:07Speaker 4: Are you cooking?
- 2:08Speaker 1: I'll be involved. What's your third one?
- 2:11Speaker 4: It's not about the gifts.
- 2:14Speaker 3: The three things will kind of lead to to the
- 2:16Speaker 3: one thing we don't need stuff.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Okay, well, I'm going to add faith. I really want
- 2:20Speaker 2: to have a faith full Christmas as well. But this
- 2:23Speaker 2: is the purpose of the conversation, and you can see,
- 2:25Speaker 2: I mean I've done that right now with you, to
- 2:27Speaker 2: help anyone who's listening to recognize how easy it is
- 2:30Speaker 2: to just zero in on what are our top three
- 2:31Speaker 2: things for Christmas. If we can just get those three
- 2:33Speaker 2: things right, everything else will be fine. So to help
- 2:36Speaker 2: you to have a very merry Christmas, number one, check
- 2:38Speaker 2: in with your values. Number two I'm going to recommend,
- 2:41Speaker 2: as an extension of that, be really intentional about the
- 2:44Speaker 2: way you.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Engage with one another.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Connection is the heart of relationships, It's the heart of happiness.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Minimize screens.
- 2:51Speaker 4: I can even go on a screen sabbatical.
- 2:54Speaker 1: I don't think that we're going to have the capacity
- 2:56Speaker 1: to do that.
- 2:56Speaker 4: Oh I plan on making that happens.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Well, I guess there's a fourth value that needed to
- 3:02Speaker 2: come into number one there. But we know that screens
- 3:05Speaker 2: can be in some circumstances brilliant for bringing the family together,
- 3:09Speaker 2: and other times it can be just devastating for what
- 3:13Speaker 2: a family looks like. And Christmas is a time for connection.
- 3:15Speaker 2: So get the balance right when it comes to screens
- 3:18Speaker 2: and books and any other distractions.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Be together.
- 3:21Speaker 2: It's just so important, and I know that not everyone
- 3:23Speaker 2: gets to have that, and there's a level of privilege
- 3:26Speaker 2: associated with saying, let's be together with the people we love.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Some people can't well.
- 3:30Speaker 3: And sometimes screens play a huge part in being able
- 3:33Speaker 3: to be together.
- 3:35Speaker 4: This last two years we've seen.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Well with COVID, Yeah, boost in zoom and face time,
- 3:40Speaker 3: face time, all of these other ways that we can
- 3:42Speaker 3: connect with families and it makes such a difference. But
- 3:45Speaker 3: utilizing it for those things and not for other things
- 3:47Speaker 3: that would distract us and take us away from people.
- 3:50Speaker 2: And the third thing to help you have a very
- 3:52Speaker 2: merry Christmas. Don't get sunburn or frost bite. Oh yeah,
- 3:56Speaker 2: for anyone who's in the northern hemisphere. Avoid the cold
- 3:59Speaker 2: or avoid the heat so that you can be healthy
- 4:02Speaker 2: and happy. You don't drink too much if you're a drinker,
- 4:04Speaker 2: look after the people around.
- 4:05Speaker 1: You, and have a wonderful Christmas.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Hey, right after the break, one more quick thing that
- 4:10Speaker 2: we need to mention, and then that's it for the year.
- 4:12Speaker 1: It's the Happy Families podcast. Are Screens Creating Tension at home? Tweens?
- 4:18Speaker 3: Teens and Screens is a webinar to guide families to healthy,
- 4:22Speaker 3: safe super screen solutions.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Bye today at happy families dot com dot au slash shop.
- 4:29Speaker 3: It's the Happy Families podcast, the podcast with a time
- 4:31Speaker 3: poor parent who just wants answers. Now, I just almost
- 4:33Speaker 3: forgot what I was going to say.
- 4:34Speaker 1: You're so relaxed.
- 4:35Speaker 4: Well I am.
- 4:36Speaker 1: It's almost over happy Christmas.
- 4:39Speaker 2: I love it when it's been a long time since
- 4:40Speaker 2: I've worked in an office, But I used to love
- 4:42Speaker 2: the last couple of days in the lead up to
- 4:43Speaker 2: Christmas in the office because everyone was just so relaxed.
- 4:47Speaker 1: And that's kind of where you are.
- 4:48Speaker 2: I mean, you're reclining in the chair right now where
- 4:50Speaker 2: we're recording the podcast.
- 4:51Speaker 4: It's behind my bag.
- 4:52Speaker 2: I just need to drink rancho relax. So I'll go
- 4:55Speaker 2: and get you a soda what do you call it?
- 4:57Speaker 2: Or so you really forgot what it's called. I'll go
- 4:58Speaker 2: and get you a soda stream in just a second.
- 5:00Speaker 4: As long as there's a wedge of line with a.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Wedge of line off our lime tree, it's coming right
- 5:05Speaker 2: up as soon as we finish the podcast. Hey, I
- 5:07Speaker 2: just want to mention a couple of things in relation
- 5:09Speaker 2: to the podcast.
- 5:10Speaker 1: This year, we've closed.
- 5:12Speaker 2: In on two million downloads of the podcast two million,
- 5:17Speaker 2: So can I just say a tremendously big thank you
- 5:21Speaker 2: to everyone who has been a Happy Family's listener during
- 5:23Speaker 2: twenty twenty one. We hope that you've enjoyed the podcast,
- 5:26Speaker 2: and we're so grateful that you do listen and give
- 5:29Speaker 2: us an opportunity to have a little bit of a
- 5:31Speaker 2: little bit of reach, a little bit of influence in
- 5:33Speaker 2: your homes, to make your family happier. It's why we
- 5:36Speaker 2: do what we do, and we're so, so very grateful.
- 5:39Speaker 2: We also really appreciate the work of JR. Our brilliant
- 5:42Speaker 2: producer who makes the podcast come alive and sound as
- 5:45Speaker 2: good as it does, because if I was in charge
- 5:47Speaker 2: of doing all that work, it would not sound.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Nearly as good. And Craig Bruce, our executive producer. Craig
- 5:54Speaker 1: is just wonderful.
- 5:56Speaker 2: It keeps us on track, but he's a great listener
- 5:59Speaker 2: and a really thoughtful creative guy who helps the podcast
- 6:03Speaker 2: to come alive with the ideas that we have. I
- 6:06Speaker 2: don't think that the podcast could sound anything like it
- 6:09Speaker 2: sounds now if it wasn't for Jr.
- 6:11Speaker 1: And Craig.
- 6:11Speaker 2: So, gentlemen, we really appreciate both of you for the
- 6:14Speaker 2: great work that you do, and to a Happy Family's
- 6:16Speaker 2: team who help people to actually get access to the
- 6:19Speaker 2: podcast by loading it up and by promoting it and
- 6:21Speaker 2: by sharing links and all the social media stuff.
- 6:24Speaker 1: And everything around it. We have a great team who
- 6:27Speaker 1: make this podcast work.
- 6:28Speaker 3: You know. One of the things that I just am
- 6:31Speaker 3: so grateful for when I think about all of the
- 6:32Speaker 3: people that we have surrounded us in the Happy Families team,
- 6:37Speaker 3: is just this amazing group of people who not only
- 6:42Speaker 3: are doing the very best in their own sphere, but
- 6:44Speaker 3: they have such a belief in what we are trying
- 6:47Speaker 3: to achieve here at Happy Families.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Yeah. They really biny into the mission of Happy Families.
- 6:50Speaker 4: Yeah, and we couldn't do it without them.
- 6:53Speaker 1: So JR.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Craig, Happy Family's Team, and to all of our Happy
- 6:57Speaker 2: Families podcast listeners, thank you, Thank you so very much.
